It was on the path to being blocked by the U.S. Senate, even so it's likely a Senate vote will still take place. More on this from WTO's Mitchell Miller, on Capitol Hill. Council chair Phil mendelson has written a letter to the Senate letting lawmakers know he wants to pull the criminal reform measure, his action comes just days ahead of a scheduled vote, and the likelihood the D.C. bill would be rescinded. This is not about the substance of the billing itself. This is about using the district for national political purposes. Republicans have been sharply critical of the measure, which would lighten mandatory penalties for several violent crimes. "What's apparently an unprecedented decision announced today by D.C. council chair Phil mendelson. He's trying to withdraw the sweeping D.C. crime bill in an effort to keep it from being nullified by Congress. Joining us live from Capitol Hill is Mitchell Miller and Mitch, the Senate is set to vote on a disapproval resolution this week on the D.C. measure. Is that boat still going to take place? Counsel chairman clearly hopes that it won't, but all indications right now are that it will take place on Wednesday. It's likely to be embarrassing for the district. Tennessee Republican Bill haggerty who's led the Republican effort for a vote to overturn the changes in the criminal code sharply criticized mendelssohn today on Twitter he called it a desperate made up maneuver that has no basis in the D.C. home rule act, Senate aides also point out that the D.C. Bill has already undergone a House vote and the disapproval resolution passed easily, so it doesn't appear there's any way that D.C. can now unilaterally pull its bill, which automatically undergoes review by Congress once it's approved, and it looks like the Senate vote is going to be pretty lopsided. Some are predicting it may pass with close to 70 votes since no one wants to be seen as approving a bill that lightens many criminal penalties. Yeah, Mitch politically, this issue definitely has become a major headache for congressional Democrats and even President Biden. It really has. It began as a well intentioned effort to revise a criminal code that most people agreed needed to be updated since many of its provisions go back more than a hundred years. But council members clearly underestimated the reaction it would get when people learned that mandatory minimum sentences were being reduced for crimes like robbery and carjacking. This comes at a time when the number of yearly carjacking says nearly tripled in the past four years and concerns, as you know about crime have grown, that's why mayor Bowser vetoed the bill, which is over ridden by the council, and ultimately President Biden felt he needed to weigh in on the Republican backed resolution saying he would not veto it if it were passed. Image, what do you think is ultimately going to happen with this effort to reform D.C. sentencing guidelines? I think it's clear they're not going to change in the immediate future. Keep in mind that even if all this controversy had not come about, the changes weren't scheduled to go into effect until 2025. And now the council and the mayor are trying to work out a compromise. I'm changing various penalties with Congress looking very closely over their shoulders. So I think it's going to take a while for this to be worked out locally and then let's not forget that the next year as a presidential election year and there's going to be a lot of talk about whether candidates are soft on crime. So I think the current sentencing guidelines are going to stay in place in D.C. at least for a while. All right, Mitch, lots to talk about thanks much. You bet. And that's WTO Capitol Hill correspondent Mitchell Miller. 5 18. Traffic

Now we turn this morning to the bumpy road that lies ahead for D.C.'s revised criminal code. D.C. council chairman Phil mendelson, who champions the revised code admits the council's fighting at uphill battle with this one part of the problem that we're dealing with is that significant number of Democrats in the Senate are up for election next year.
