"I mean, he would be excited. Well, 5 minutes would be an exaggeration. It would be in 5 seconds. Absolutely. And so I think this hanging over him is clearly a problem that I don't think is going to be going away anytime soon. And I understand from the perspective of Tennessee, you're talking about a coach who had a terrible final season and I think he was probably not very popular inside the building. And somebody they probably wanted to part ways with and they had a way to do it. So, is anybody talk to? I don't remember the guy's name, but he made a lot of noise, some lawyer and Knoxville who was threatening scorched earth on the university of Tennessee. He even heard from no, and it's a good question. I'm pretty sure that's the same attorney who represented the coach of Kansas. Who had a scenario in which he ended they were able to bring a case and say that his firing had a lot to do with finding a way around a buyout and that they were trying to draw some parallels. Now I don't know if that would necessarily hold up as well in this instance. Say what you want about how wise Tennessee was to kind of tell on themselves from the start here the way they did, it may not have been the most effective strategy in avoiding expansion. But it wasn't effective strategy, I think. And probably making sure they don't have to pay that buyout. And finally, Philip fulmer, who has streets named after him, is the last Tennessee coach to international championship. Who looked like this was going to be a long-term job where everyone was going to love on him and toast him for all of his accomplishments. He was clearly pushed out. I mean, it was awkward and painful to watch for those of us who have always respected him. I'm not saying he's going to be marched through town with a scarlet letter, but what do you think the legacy of Phil fulmer is going to be and how is this ugly incident changed him? Because he did for whatever reason inexplicably, as it may have been, give Jeremy Pruitt a contract extension in the midst of a rather terrible tenure. He did it right before that 2020 season and it's funny you bring that up because, yeah, he certainly deserves the blame for that, but a lot of the administration that's still in the ox will sign off on that too. And I think in terms of his legacy, honestly, Paul from what I detect, I don't think it's impacted it as much as you might think. Given how ugly that whole situation was, you go to basketball games, at Tennessee now, Philip former still there. He's still very much a presence around the university around the athletic department, now he's not obviously not making decisions. I think things have changed significantly with an AD and Danny white who's come in and been a strong presence on his own. And I think it's has worked to try to change quite a few things over there. But at the same time, I think solar farmer will always be someone who is greatly respected and welcomed around Tennessee. I've seen nothing since then that would suggest otherwise despite how poorly the end was. Yes, it's amazing what winning will do in the platform of college athletics. It tends to make us forget pretty much everything. We both have seen that way too many times. Well, gentry, thank you. I think you're right, by the way. I don't think this is going to be a big deal. And we'll probably find out the final disposition of the NCAA case probably in about 20, 35. Exactly. No, you don't hold your breath, you know? Great to have you on. Gentry had to ask this. From the Tennessee and always a great guest. And we are just mowing through the program right now. We're not done yet. We hope you'll stick around. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We welcome all of you back, great to have you with us here and what an interesting program has been. Let's check in with Scott. Next in New Orleans. Hey Scott. Hey, Scott, from North Carolina. Well, great. Thank you, Scott. Good afternoon. How are you doing, bob? Scott. We're doing great. I hope everybody's staying safe. And it does help me. Well, thank you. That's nice of you to say. Question for you today and I'll watch your show every day religiously. My wife comes from home and going, why are you watching this? It's what I watch. My question for you is. With Davos sui and Clinton. Now, I'm not a Clinton fan. I am a gamecock. But I'm a sports fan. What? As gabo done for what seems to be, you just to bash him and Clinton. Scott, dabble hasn't done anything. I knew him pretty well. And I know this may surprise you a little bit, but I've always liked dabo and known him since he was a walk on at Alabama. We talk occasionally, in fact, he called me about a year ago about something that he didn't like, but we had a good conversation and it ended amicably. So I would argue that I don't dislike him or hate him. Clemson, I have a little fun with. That's been a standing joke on the show. You should know that. That's right. Yes. But I will tell you this, Scott, of the many coaches that I know, and that would obviously include quite a few, some better than others. Dabble would be pretty high on my list of people that I like. So it may not always seem that way because we've gotten to do a couple of public skirmishes, but that's more for entertainment than for terrible personal feelings. Do you believe that when the time comes

"Today we are back, yes, normalcy has arrived after we were last week in Atlanta. We appreciate all of you being here. On a Monday, we began to move out of July. When we were here the other day, the big story came from Tennessee and not much has changed. A lot of people still wondering about how Jeremy Pruitt could go so wrong as the UT head football could rule breaking while serious is a relic in the NIL future. That's the opinion of one of our guests today. In other words, no big deal. And pat 40 from Sports Illustrated, Tennessee, fans got their way. Now the chickens have come home to roost. So it is definitely a different era. Things are different, but remember, the Tennessee allegations all happened before NIL. Does that mitigate it? Does it matter that the school took proactive measures? We're going to find out pat 40 joining us with some very strong comments the other day in his column. About the legacy of Philip foley, there's no reason to use the word legacy in Jeremy Pruitt in the same sentence because that is not going to happen. Pat, great to have you with us. Appreciate it very much. I wish I could have watched you writing that column. If you had as much joy riding and as I did reading it, we would both be very happy. Good afternoon. It wasn't a difficult one to write. That's for sure. You know, I thought when you're reading 18 level one violations and you go back and look at all of the activities at Tennessee that led up to the hiring of both Phil fulmer as a D and Jeremy Pruitt as football coach. Well, this is what they earned. And let's talk about that, pat, because I think we're so we're all guilty. Well, maybe not you, but I am saying, so no big deal, different era. Those are that's yesterday, but let's talk about how we ended up Tennessee ended up with Jeremy Pruitt. I mean, I basically remember the end of it when Philip fulmer chose Pruitt over Mel Tucker a name that has been very prominent lately, but that's leaving out the subject of that conversation with the Greg schiano fiasco in so many other aspects. Yeah. I mean, this was originally, I mean, this was a populist coup at Tennessee a fan revolt, but removed John curry, the athletic director. And before that blocked his hiring of Greg schiano, I'm not going to sit here and say that Greg schiano would have been a great hire, but everybody that says he would be a terrible hire doesn't know either. Nobody knows how Greg shiana would have done, but his track record of going 11 and two at Rutgers is pretty similar. I think the James Franklin going 9 four at Vanderbilt. It's pretty darn good. But then beyond that for curry to be pushed out when he was negotiating or talking to Mike leach and then bring in an absolute administrative know nothing in Phil fulmer and for them him to hire a simpleton in my opinion in Jeremy Pruitt. Well, I mean, this was just one bad decision that compounded another. And while it may have felt good to say, we're taking back our program, we're putting a Tennessee man in charge, the Tennessee man in charge didn't know what he was doing. And that, of course, Phil fulmer, who's a legacy, he had a brilliant career until he got fired as a football coach. And this pat was a make good. Listen, we love coach fulmer. We're sorry it ended badly. The fact that lane kiffin replaced him, mitigates the firing a little bit because that was an equal disaster and so I was and so was Butch Jones. So let's bring him back and forget what happened at the end when he looked the other way on recruiting. And let him be the man and I fell for it. Now I could be my blood, but I thought he was going to resurrect the program. And did he ever pat? Yeah. He did, sure. I mean, you know, that's the thing. Look, a lot of people have good feelings for Phil fulmer. And for good reason, could you use a very successful coach there? He won the last national championship Tennessee one. But that doesn't mean he's going to be a good administrator. That doesn't mean he's going to run a good coaching search. That doesn't mean he's going to make good decisions there, including giving Jeremy Pruitt an arrays and an extension after going 8 and 5 in a year when they lost to Georgia state. That's what helped push his buyout up to the 12.6 million dollar Mark. I mean, I didn't see Phil former do anything well and during his time as an athletic director. Pat in terms of Pruitt, I don't want to lose sight of him, you've done some stellar investigative reporting in your time. Just compare and contrast what you learned in reading this report to what we normally see programs investigated for and I'm not trying to turn anything into garden variety because in the L world, just because players are legally receiving money, doesn't mean coaches can illegally break the rules, which clearly the NCAA is accusing Pruitt of doing. Yeah, I mean, one of the misnomers here is that, well, this is all legal now. No, actually, every single thing that they're charged with in that notice of allegations is not legal. You can not have recruits in and pay their expenses on an unofficial visit. You can't have men on during a dead period. And coaches can not hand wads of cash to recruits or their families. Even now, even in the NIL era, those things can not happen according to the NCAA rules. Pruitt was usually, you know, these things go. The head coach is like three layers removed and said, I didn't know anything was happening. Well, it's kind of hard to say that when you and your wife are accused of literally being part of The Batman batwoman group. So it is incredibly sloppy. It's unbelievably brazen. Yeah, the dollar figures don't jump out when we're talking now about possible NIL deals of millions of dollars, but this is pure out paying recruits to come to school there. And it is one of the more lengthy and I would say embarrassing notices of allegations. I've seen yeah, and pat, I don't know, misses Pruitt. But I do know my wife and no matter what I was doing, she would not cheat to help further my career. I really want to know what the motivation was here. And especially considering she was once a compliance officer at Florida state. I don't know what that says about Florida state, but I do know what it says about Tennessee, and it was a disaster. Yeah, no, that's the other added wrinkle. It's like, she worked in rules compliance. IE her job was to make sure Florida state and Troy university were following the rules. Now she gets Tennessee. She's one of the ones breaking the rules. I mean, this one falls into the category of you really can't make this up. Nor can you make up the stupidity and the abject failure in real time and in retrospect of Jeremy Pruitt's tenure. For those of you who did not see your piece, you described it in historical terms. Would you mind sharing that with us here today? Yeah, I said he's the worst. Worst SEC football hire the 21st century. I know, I immediately heard significant blowback from Arkansas fans who said, no, we want to take a stake the claim to having the worst hire, which is an interesting sort

"Take a week off and one of those other anonymous people at your website. We have a lot of great people at Saturday down south. A lot of people that would gladly step into my shoes. Anyway, let's get some serious Conrad. Hot takes here before you go. What are you thinking about for the fall? I save this just for you. Just for you. Haven't even said it on my own airwaves yet. I think Tennessee is going to be George this year. Sound the alarm. I know. And look, I'm going to do the thing. Hold on, I'm just getting notifications from Saturday down south. I'm going to do the thing where I'm going to give the reason why I'm an idiot before anybody can tweet at me. Okay. Tennessee and the post Phil fulmer era against Alabama, Florida and Georgia is four and 35. Not great, not great. I think it's what, like, 15 or 16 in a row that they've lost against those three teams. Not good. I floated out this poll on Twitter of how many of those teams will they beat this year. And I think there was a total of 90% of them said zero or one of those games that they will win this year. I think Tennessee's going to win two of those games this year. I think they're going to be Florida. I think they're going to be George. They're not going to be Bama. We're not going there. But do we really think that George is going to get through a repeat season 12 going into the SEC championship? Or could they be caught by a team that stretches the field the way that Tennessee does, who has an outside threat in Cedric Tillman, obviously a stud quarterback in hand and hooker, one of the best in the country and Jalen Hyde, a guy that they're really high on. Can that be the thing that takes advantage of a Georgian team that doesn't have that defensive line that's all world all generation. This year, the same way that they did last year, put more pressure on that secondary. That's the formula. That's what we need to see Tennessee do, obviously, easier said than done. We've talked ourselves in a Tennessee before. I'm not saying Tennessee is going to win the east or anything like that. I'm not saying that. But I think Tennessee sneaks up on Georgia wins that game in Athens this year. Breaking news. Says Tennessee will beat Florida and Georgia this year. Is that a Saturday on south notification? According to sanity down south. They're an incredible fine, but I'm sure, by the way, they just went ahead and that's fine. That's fine. That's fine. Listen, it's always fun to talk to you. I always wanted to talk to you. It's really great. You're more than exceeded the expectations that we had for you following Tim Tebow. That's always like a death trap. I had Scott rabbi on yesterday. Great writer. He came up to us once at the SEC championship game. He was sandwiched between. Jeff Foxworthy and Ric Flair. And he was the he was the middle guest. That's how we did it with you. We didn't think this was going to be any good. So it turned out really well. Tebow Ric Flair and this instance? No, it's Tebow and Chrissy. Kissy Freud. Okay. All right. I'm not looking down because I didn't know that. Actually, I am looking down because I didn't know that. It's to the point in the day where I should have I shouldn't have had that second martini at lunch. You know what? It's only Tuesday, you gotta pace yourself. Are you gonna be all right by Thursday? I don't think so. I'm already, I'm already on Thursday after that. What time does the last media member start? Is that next segment? It's coming up. We're getting there. 48 hours from now. All right, great to see you. You always make me bat it. I don't know what it is. I don't know what it is either. You're going to have to kind of end your what did you call it? Your shun of Saturday Don south airwaves and come on. Eventually I will. Eventually. You are listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. FX is

"Okay, next one, Matthew Akers. Which fan base do you think has the most regret for firing a winning coach over the last 20 years? A lot is made about good and bad coaching hires without giving much thought to the firings that preceded them. My top three are as follows, Nebraska firing Frank solich, Michigan firing Lloyd Carr and Texas firing Mac brag. Those are good choices. I would lean towards the Nebraska one because it has been so dry since then. I mean, to me, the other ones not quite as much. I mean, I don't think even as much as Texas has struggled and as great as Mac Brown was for a long time there. I don't think you would hear from a lot of Texas fans who are like, oh, we never should have fired back Brown. Because things have gone stale. To me, the thing with this stew is those other guys had been there for a decade plus as head coaches. So I feel like what happens is you get fans who are kind of tired of somebody they're like, yeah, the message is worn out or whatever. And it's just kind of not resonating. In soul edge's case, he'd been there 6 years, which is like, I think what kind of doomed him there was after because he was having to succeed Tom Osborne. Well, yeah, but after three top ten seasons in a row, they had a 7 and 7 year where they went three and 5 in the big 12. And at that point, okay, you're on the hot seat, and then even though they were 9 and three and finished in the top 20, they pulled the plug. Steve Peterson. A name that will live in it for me as the AD. I would put Tennessee Phil fulmer on this list. And again, that was one where at the time, I don't know if it was unanimous. I think the fan base was split to some degree, but you know, they were not where they were when he led them to the national title and had them in the national title contention all the time. So I don't think at the time there was a lot of, oh, I don't know if we should have done this. But the wilderness Tennessee has fallen into ever since then. The fact that he briefly came back as AD tells you that there's a lot of regret over how that ended. Yeah, that's an interesting one. I think sometimes what you get into, like, I don't think any I almost any Miami fan would say any regret with this. But like Larry coker's record when they fired him, was pretty remarkable, especially considering what the next ten years was or 15 years. But I think people felt like you know what this program is backsliding in a big way. He got the blame for it. And I just felt like, you know, for a guy who won a national title, Larry coker's record in 6 years of Miami was 60 and 15. But it went from the team was ranked number one, number two, number 5, number 11, number 17, unripe. He'd never got any credit for, I think that a lot of at the time it felt the people seemed to feel like, well, there was just so much talent, anybody could have done this. All Larry coker did was not screw it up. And that's probably not fair. Knowing everything that goes into running a program. For them to go 12 and O 12 and one 11 and two, I'm sure, you know, I'm sorry, but the head coach had something to do with that. Then it did fall off and I will never, I still remember his last game was freezing on the sideline in the MPC computers bold Boise. Did you cover that game? No, I didn't cover that game. I just remember watching it being like, I just felt bad for him. He'd been fired and, you know, these were the days when they would just let the guy coach the bowl game. And but they did win the MPC computers bowl over Nevada, 21 20. Chris salt Nevada coach at the time. Bruce, I'm going to give you three guesses. Who is Miami's MVP quarterback in the MPC computers bowl? So this game is 2006. Don't look it up. Don't look it up. No, but I'm like, jacori was not there yet. Kyle Wright was already gone. Not sure. But he wasn't him. I wasn't Kyle Wright, huh? Man. Ryan Collins was long gone. I'm trying to think who would have been give me a first initial. Okay. Oh wait, the first name or the last name. First name. Last name F..

"And we welcome all of you to another day and yes, we've made it to Thursday. Some doubt about that earlier in the week, but surprise surprise. We are here for another day or two before they sent us out to pasture. Anyway, great to have you here on this Thursday afternoon. A lot to do today. Speaking about gnawing on the pasture, how about this name for a headline? Derek Dewey, once among the best and the brightest in the industry, now part of the Sabin rehab club in Tuscaloosa. He's otherwise not the first Tennessee coach. Michael Costa Grande with this interesting note here with the hiring of Dewey, Alabama's now employed three of the last four former Tennessee head coaches to his analysts, including Butch Jones and lane kiffin, the fourth was Jeremy Pruitt, Alabama's D.C., before going to UT. That's every former vol coach since Phil fulmer. Phil former's not doing anything these days. Maybe just suggesting and it's also interesting to note, of course, John majors passed away two years ago, but if you go back to before John majors, Bill battle was the head football coach at Tennessee in the early 70s, he retired a couple of years ago as the athletic director at Alabama. Quite a relationship between Tennessee and Alabama. Of course, I've never had anything to do with that triangle. Let's continue with more headlines here. How about this? Big Ted ADs. What do they want to do? They want to keep the 9 game schedule. I don't blame them. 8 games made no sense. Finally, I like something, the Big Ten is doing. The alliance may not like it, but the alliance has no cloud. This is our guest list today. Heather Dennis, she will join us in a few minutes, Spencer hall. Haven't seen Spencer since football season. The one and only Bruce Feldman and Andy landers, I was beginning to wonder whatever happened to Andy landers. And we're about to find out. Let's get to some phone calls here at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 Steve is up next or up first. I should say from Georgia hey Steve. Hey, Paul, how are you doing today? We are doing great. Thank you for asking me. Good. I usually record your show and watch it after I get in from work, but I just, I just had to call early today and I've been watching it for years and without a doubt, the show yesterday was an all time greatest I've ever seen. And I wanted to get your I wanted to give you my opinion on something and see it gets your analysis for what you think. The following feud between K and GM was, I mean, that was a TKO GM t-k-o'd in the first round. I mean, she went down in the first round and it was a genius. It was genius strategy that he used. He exposed her for a girl that grew up on the farm. Milk and cows and slumping hogs, he called her a society Gale and she just couldn't take it. And at the end of the call, she was screaming, you're not a man. You're not a man. I mean, she was down on the canvas. She was gone. And I just thought it was a brilliant strategy on Jim's part and it was no contest at all. No contest. And he seemed to employ Muhammad Ali's old rope a dope strategy from the 70s, and you know, I would agree with you. I mean, Jim, who had been counted out by more than a few people. Made one of the great comebacks of all time yesterday. You know, Polly reminded me of Holyfield when he took on ties on that second time. I mean, that was all she had left. And she was one of my favorite colors and I was on the floor absolutely crying. I was laughing so hard. With his Valentine's but it completely came undone, which surprised me for her. And yeah, I let other people comment on that, but a lot of people here agree with you. Yeah. And Joe ritt from red bait, one of my favorite colors of our time, Joe got taken out too. And Joe started screaming. I'm handsome. I'm handsome. I'll answer it. And you knew it was over. He was done with when he started doing that. You had a big day. I mean, Jim's like the guy that just walks in the bar and starts throwing people out the front the front window. And finally, there's nobody left in the bar except the bartender. He goes, anybody next. And the bartender goes up. Thank you for the call. Phil is up next in Florida. I hate Phil, you're on the air. Oh, how you doing? I feel like I'm so early in the show. I'm like, from big, deep gap. Is that correct or not? Phil is a Philadelphia the first caller from deep gap because we wanted to make sure his voice comes out of the holler before anybody else's. Paul, I'm sure you're aware of the story that Billy Reid died about ten days ago to a couple of weeks ago. No, I was not aware of that and when I saw your name pop up, I saw the listing and I am terribly shocked by that because when I was a college student, Billy Reid, we used to refer to him as William Frey, that's how his byline read and Sports Illustrated. Yes. He was, he was that sports writer. All wanted to be. And when I first got to know him, it was truly one of the honors of my life getting to know him in my early days and I.

"Hey everyone, welcome, very pleasure, welcome to the day. It is Wednesday. It's this hard to believe. It's only Wednesday after what has been going on since late Saturday in the early Sunday, but welcome. Let's get going and there is quite a bit to talk about. Yeah, the college football playoff reveal getting us ready for the weekend. Michigan is up to number two after its huge win at home over Ohio State and that's where we are with, of course, Georgia, Michigan, Alabama and Cincinnati, how much will it all change this weekend? That's what we're here to talk about. That was just one of the many stories making the rounds as some of you may have seen earlier today. Brian Kelly formerly introduced as the LSU head football coach quite a press conference down on the Bayou. This is so much about alignment. And for me, alignment relative to this university, the goals, what is in store for LSU, athletics, as a university, that is what the draw is for me. And certainly the opportunity to be here amongst the finest players, staff, coaches, being part of the SEC, an incredible challenge and opportunity in my life that I was excited to take on once I was able to meet Scott spent time with Scott. Hear his vision for the university and see how it connected so much with mine. Let me caution some of you people who may be snoozing on the couch. If you had one eye open and you saw Brian Kelly, say it's so great to be a part of the SEC. Let me remind you, Notre-Dame is not part of the SEC. Brian Kelly is now at LSU. I didn't want to give anybody a heart attack who was nodding off after a good lunch. Anyway, let's continue with some more. Anyway, Georgia. They must figure out a way to stop will Anderson. Well, good luck. Nobody has topped them all year. Maybe the dogs will be the first. And the tide is confident and Trey Sanders is Brian Robinson and others are dealing with injuries as they get ready to face the dogs on Saturday. Bam is an underdog. And you have to go back really other than the Georgia game in 2015 and the one this weekend that the O 9 game was the last time Alabama had been an underdog and we know what happened there. Ended the reign of Tim Tebow, Georgia was an underdog against LSU, won that game. I was against less miles. Nick Saban, his first SEC appearance, championship appearance, he was an underdog. Against Phil fulmer in Tennessee, Tennessee team had to win to go to the national championship. They did not. And do you remember who the coaches were in the 1999 SEC championship game? Steve spurrier on the Florida side. Mike dubose and the final jeopardy question is which Alabama coach beat Steve spurger twice in the same season? The answer is, who was Mike dubos? Yeah, it won't be easy though. Fewest points allowed in conference play last 25 years. The Miami team of O one, many consider that to be one of the greats of all time, LSU and Alabama. That was the same year. You wonder why they had a 9 to 6 game when they were both only giving up 8.4 a game. So of course, just a reminder, we will be there Friday. Our cast of thousands literally. Sharing with you all the excitement that that game usually brings. And this is certainly one of the biggest SEC championship games ever going with almost have to go back to those games. We mentioned a minute ago in O 8 O 9. Heather joining us from Texas is today going to be the day the CFP expands. Brian Kelly, yes, that is correct. He will join us at the 4 o'clock hour. Ryan shazier will join his former Pittsburgh player, Ohio State linebacker. Alyssa dreya and John talti on all the coaching craziness and what could be next. In your phone calls here at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5. Let's get going in a hurry here and David starts us all off. A hello David. Hey, Paul. Watch that press conference and I'm sure you did. What'd you think? Oh, I hadn't seen that much sell. And that long a press conference with that much emphasis on athletics since Joe ab Thomas introduced Bill curry. I remember that one. And they passed on Bobby Bobby. Yeah, you know, I can't remember who it was. I think it was Joe ab Thomas, who said the days were in Alabama will be known only as a football factory are over. Exactly. Until Webb was cleaning bumps and burners at the biology department there. After hiring, Bill curry, didn't look at that. Press go. I think all press conferences are too long. It doesn't matter how long they last. Well, they introduced Nick Saban now more did with about 6 words. He said, I'd like to introduce the next sure did. Next head football coach of the crimson tide next statement and that was it. And it worked out pretty well. Well, I'll never forget that day. Saban laid out his blueprint. And.

"Asked her or ask the pros. Question of the day brought to you by a rally out of parts. Today's question is Is asked to send it to me. I'll make this noise while I get hit it. Here we go. Chris from Jacksonville, last between Florida, Florida State and Miami with school has the brightest future. All you won't do. Want to say Florida, but they're in the SEC. I'm worried about Dan Mullins defense. Miami Damn Chris. That's a tough question, because I was kind of want to say you, CF. Um I'm going to say, you know, Golly, I just don't want to get caught like ah, I It's recent. It's recency bias. I want to say I'm going to end up saying I'm gonna end up still saying Florida state Miami. I'm still a little lukewarm on the coaching situation. I think that Think that the pressure that the alumni has put on the on the program has actually been bad for Miami. I think it's turned into kind of a toxic thing every year. Miami kind of needs and I and I wanted to actually save this, but it brings it right up now. Miami is a situation where I yell could be beautiful for it. I mean, you've had the Nevin Shapiro's and things like that have been the It's been kind of ugly for Miami. I get that. Manny Diaz is in his third year. You had a good season last season. I think we want so desperately to have Miami back. Miami needs a few years to be under the radar again. Don't know if they can because of the turnover chain. I don't know if they can because Michael Irvin's on TV all the time. I don't know if they can. I think that what I think they need and what they actually get are two different things. But the pressure that's on Miami is 10 fold in comparison to what they have. I still even taking Florida even though they're in SEC school at a former two time national champion during my well, three time technically national champion during my life And Florida State That's in a State of flux that I think Mike Norville is starting to Starting to legitimize. Think they're doing some healing right now, after the whole Jimbo Fisher, leaving them without a net. And not all that Jimbo Fisher took a better job. That's the way it works. But I think that that's bothered Florida State. I think that's hurt Florida State over the last few years, the whole situation that played out with Taggart has has really hurt Florida State. Norville really has to roll up his sleeves and get to work down there. The brand. I think it's still fresh, and we could see that last night on television. It's still a good brand. It's still brand that The father's resonate with its not dead, and I'm not talking about the program. I'm talking about the brand. It's not a dead pro. It's not a dead brand like what you have in Nebraska and what you have at Tennessee. Those are dead brands. Guys my age. Get excited about Nebraska. Their kids don't care. If if my sons were good at football, and we went to Nebraska and my sons had offers from Oregon. My sons had offers from Texas My sons had offers from Oklahoma. Nebraska doesn't hold a candle. They don't care. I may get excited about Tommie Frazier and Tom Osborne. My sons don't give a damn. I might get excited about Peyton Manning and I'll Wilson in Tennessee and Phil Fulmer. My sons don't give a damn They're dead brands. Florida state. If if near you had sons that and they were good at college football and had visits to Florida State. Your son can still get excited about Florida State. Bobby Bowden still resonates with me. Florida State still resonates with me. I think Jamis Winston could be an ugly thing I know, but I can still resonate. They've had recent success. 2013 wasn't that long ago. The brand is still there. The brand is still fresh. So Mike Norville can build off that can have success. That's a program that's willing to to put the funds in. They might not have exactly what some of the other ones do. But they store willing to put the funds in to make that a brilliant program again. It's just that it's been a little bit and I thought about this right after Tommy Bowden joins us. If Bobby Bond wasn't at Florida State, and Tommy Brown was at Clemson. Does Tommy Bowden do better. And they were a successful program while Tommy Bowden was there. They're just nowhere near what they have been with Davos, Sweeney. Abu sweetie took it to a different level, and I know he coached a little bit against him. I get that. But it's just nowhere near the category of what they are now. And with the A C. C. There's been room for one big dog on the block. There really hasn't been room for two. So if Florida State if Dubow either slips, which I don't know if he will, But if Davos slips or go somewhere else if he goes to Alabama of Saban retires or whatever. Think Mike Norville is in a plum spot again. Matt Brown is an older man is not going to be there forever. U N C. He might leave it in a better spot than where he found it. Certainly if I leave them with a better coach than where he found him, certainly will see Virginia Tech. I don't have a lot of long term. Faith in Justin Fuente. It was a good win. They played very well defensively. I'm just not going to sit there and say that just went is totally safe and everything's fine and everything's fixed again. And it's Beamer ball all over again. In Virginia Tech, it takes more than that. But for Florida State, I think if certain things go their way. Time isn't.

"We all know that What's it feel like. And how much different is it even with. Covert concerns rising around the country. Yeah think everybody's excited to be back on campus now. Football back tennessee I would say everyone is still kind of skipped skeptic about tennessee. We got the new coach. But i don't think everyone jumping on the bandwagon yet. I think you know with the history. That's innoc- has. They're all kind of reserved as far as that. But everybody's excited to be back. They're excited to hasselbald meena neilan capacity again. It's it's hundredth year of the stadium. So everyone's excited about that. But i think they're still hold off from declaring tendency the national championship point the joshua final. Tell you mentioned pruitt earlier. And i know that's the topic nobody really wants to go to but It ended in an absolute disaster. Then we had the school chancellor and and the president coming out and throwing him under the bus. We're still trying to figure it. Phil fulmer leaves in in a matter of days. We're still trying to figure out really what's going to happen on that front. I realized nobody is saying anything. But what are you. What are you pick up around campus. What's a how big of a concern is that Impending investigation or the current impact the investigation. That's currently going on. Yeah it's a bit of an odd situation because as you mentioned no one really talks about it. It's something i think this kind of on the back of everybody's mind like well you know. Maybe if we're actually good night somehow you know. Make the playoffs or ballgame or something like that you know they might revoke it because you never know what the punishment is going to be. There's always the thought. That tennessee could impose a punishment on itself So but you know they don't really announce much as far as that goes you know. They don't let the media in and all that so. There's still some questions. Some some drawbacks there because nobody really knows But that's just that's just kinda how it is with these investigations. You know you ask the coach although give you as you know we're cooperating. We're doing our part and you don't get much more to go off the net. So i think that's just kind of something that's on the back of everybody's mind where you know we're not to worry about it now but maybe towards the end of the year could ask consequences on tennessee josh. Let's talk about you for a second before we go. You're in a coveted position. A lot of folks would like to be the sports editor of the school paper in a place like knoxville. What you're back to ask you what your back story. You're a college student. So there's but where you from. And what are your. What are your thoughts. Moving forward as You you tackle this job. Yeah i'm from From lewisville tennessee is just right outside knoxville. In here in this area my whole life. And so i'm pretty excited to be here at the daily beacon. Get this opportunity to be pretty cool things Cover tennessee sports. You know hopefully I'll be have a career that continues in sports journalism. That's what i wanna do this. What i love But yeah the beacons been great. I've had nothing but great experiences so far last year. It's kind of weird with kobe. Didn't everything's online but happy to be back in person. Even though you know. I'm like four days into it at this point but it's it's been nothing but great so far all the best. Thanks for making time. We hope to see if we Come that direction And maybe you could give us old some old timers a tour of the school newspaper and see if it's still there. Thank you very much. What applies pleasure to To have josh lewin And that is something that we are going to try to do as much as possible. We've done it three times. And i will continue to do it As we work our way through this week. And as i mentioned a couple of hours ago when we go on campuses We really do like Talking to the cat. I'll never forget. It was two maybe three years ago when the most memorable moments. I think we've ever had on a friday as we had The editor of the sports editor and in another editor of the daily beacon. We were up there at Areas hall and it was just amazing Amazing time just reflecting back on the year is and and talking about these young people in the prime of their life As they get ready to tackle the the end of their college career. And what's ahead for them. We'll take a break more of your phone calls right.

"In glad that you are with us and let's grab some more phone here and oak is in vegas good afternoon. Thank you some pleasure to speak with you and respect you very very much. Thank you so much. I have two points and if you bear with me one of them's about the underrating of the university of florida football team this year. And the second one is about the dominance of the university of florida in the sec. And as as far as the football team. I think this team is more of a dan. Mullen team and i mean that. Because dan mullen has always enjoyed the pleasure of having a a quarterback that is a runner and i think everything is going to be perfect for the offense. I think it. Also everybody's talking about all the Productivity they lost with pits and tony. And that's that's true but if you remember before last year they talked about how florida had lost four receivers to the nfl and they didn't do too bad last year with the receivers and if you look at if you look at the ford of football team in general in each position. The offensive line is more but dan mullen offensive line. It's a run blocking line. It's the at florida's had in years. Utah being changes on the outside. You name for the other than emory jones. They have five running backs. And you can't with five running backs you're not going to be able to give them all time in the in the backfield so he's gonna move some of those guys out to flanker. Does he has a couple of that. Are tremendous receivers and i personally think that this is more of a dan. Mullen offense than any he said is three years as head coach at florida. Even more than last year last year was was a tremendous year but it wasn't his type of office. He's got a great running attack this year. He's got a big offensive line and he's got a runner at quarterback a playmate Second of all the defense need what they needed from. Last year was run stoppers in the middle and they picked up the kid from auburn and the kids sometimes state who. I've been hearing rave reviews about both of them if they can stop. Stop the run and stuff. The run in the middle. They're gonna we know that florida's athletes. We know they have great defensive backs. I think the defense is going to have a chip on their shoulder and they're going to be a lot better than they were last year. Well thank you for the call. They lost a key player yesterday. Which i think could be a factor but I hear where you're coming from. And i i think the part about mullen is correct now whether it translates. I'm not sure. I've said this in the past where florida may have a better record and a better t not a better record but a better team but still not be able to get where they want to go. Because of the schedule in alabama. On the schedule i think could be the difference between a making the sec championship game in watching from home. Thanks for the call. Barry is up next year on the air. Hello barry hey how you doing buddy. We're doing great thank you. I just wanted to talk to them. Two minutes ago about Some of the greatest coaches in the sec. Or around and i was wondering why coq johnny bolts. Nine wasn't wasn't brought up in that. I mean i always thought i've been ole miss fan ever since fifty seven and fifty eight. I'm seventy years old and and Johnny one part of the sec anna national championship but I was just wondering why. Johnny berry Because i agree with you completely. I grew up In the shadow of john dot. And i think he he sh- he should be on anyone's list reason why he is not on. This list is simple. This is a didn't catch it the first time. This is a list of the coaches over the past. Fifty years coach volt retired In in the in the late sixties now he did come back and coach a couple of games. i think in seventy-three without would not have been enough to qualify for this list. But but if you're doing a list of all time coaches and john votes not on there in the top ten. It's a fraudulent list. I agree with you completely on that you you but he did not make it from an from a time standpoint. Thank you for the call. Appreciate it very very much. Chris and south carolina chris young. I'm doing well thank you. Hey i'm work above calling office so there you know i i. I'm this close to the. You know georgia game coming up. But then he got a little bit of question. Hey i mean you got don't show. I did not want to start the season at war with my friends from clemson But i i was. I was on a show yesterday. Two or three days ago. I gave up. I gave a flip comment and flippant not a flipping and all the clemson websites are melting. Down as if i have just declared their program did. That's not what i did. I simply said. I thought george would win the game and i mentioned a few concerns about what i saw last year. I know i know some. I know the defensive line is supposed to be great. And i know that they have a lot of really talented players but i still think georgia is the better team. So we'll see in three weeks. No big deal. Yeah i mean. I mean you got to say what you want to say this to you though. I don't know if i've seen them more. If i've run into a more thin skinned fan base than clemson in a long time. I mean you you if you if you don't bow down to dabo and say that clinton is the best team every year then. It's almost like you've got to fight your way out of a bar. What is with you people know. It did not usually based that you the best thing. Because i think is a really good team. They're an elite program. But i think their time at the tops over. Okay stop and he just have to know when your day in the sun has come to an end. And i think georgia is going. Dave is going to make that very clear on september fourth. Eight job is he back back in eighteen nineteen eighty three. Oh gee when. I am now. You're now you're trying to go of clubs and if you're going to criticize georgia you need to get your facts right. It was nine thousand. Nine hundred eighty not eighteen. Eighty the georgia one last national championship. Even though it seems like one hundred and forty one years. let's. Let's talk to charles in morristown tennessee charles. Good to talk to you again. Thank you this is a list is all messed up. They don't have phil fulmer or st. Spare your own. Yeah we fifty person list Former is on the list barrier is in the whereas spurrier. He's like in the top up to look it up. He's like fifteen or something but We'll talk to the author his list..

"App download. Now we are back here on wednesday afternoon thomas up next in pittsburgh. Hello tom oh how are you doing. We're doing well. Thank you big johnny majors. Stand up here by way. We i remember seeing him one time. A power game and He was in the bathroom actually not had the presence of mind not to approach until he was done with his business. But i i gotta say something to joining majors. And i said donnie. He should have won. The heisman obviously looked at me and said he said paul morning pretty good athlete too but he was such a gentleman and what a fitting way to go sitting on the backboard. The drinking and we're looking at tennessee. Where but he was just a great man. We loved them up here in pittsburgh tom he was he was the first coach. Really got to know a new coach battle a little bit. When i was in school but i was there. When majors came marching home from pittsburgh after winning national championship and it. It was people. Just don't understand what a hero's welcome he got back back in knoxville. It was it was truly remarkable all iran. I mean he he was always a dapper guy. He loved having a good time lot of stories. I i remember seeing him. Their pit penn state game and in state college and he was a few rows behind me but he was just so getting gracious with everybody and talking to everybody and he just he was just a great man and we loved him in pittsburgh his his second tour duty came was successful. Will tell you that's one of the sadder things i've seen as he was. He was so bitter after tennessee fired him he wanted to recreate and it. Just it never worked but you know coach majors. Never i mean you know. He never quite got well. I probably couldn't bring this up. Phil fulmer add something to do with i. I will tell you this story. I don't know a couple of years ago. I knew he was not in good health and through some mutual friends and knock so. I attempted to do something that i don't know why i attempted to do it but i thought it would be a great. I was even though. I was not particularly closed at the time. With former i later became closer. I tried to get the two of them together if they would sit down for an interview and it wasn't a rehash the past but it was more just a reminisce and i believe majors agreed to do it and former wouldn't and it's really too bad why it would have been terrible. Well all he did with both. It had an impact on tennessee sports. But we'll all major in the gentleman who was that's fan. I mean they're they're they're they're i remember talking to coach majors years many many years later on the air and he still couldn't let the former thing go and and it's a lesson a lesson for all of that yeah. I don't blame a meal. You're right you're right there into why it the nfl. I remember many people brought this nick. It kind of occurred to me yesterday. When i turned some something about some fresno state twin or something getting a jump start on it and one where the girl was the guy. And i'm thinking. I think the ones who are gonna make is not a quarterback or the running back a wide receiver at the big schools. I think it will be the pretty girls like the track and field girls soccer girl the volleyball girl. I mean you know a lot of these girls. Are you know instinct graham stars and you know if you're a pretty young girl you're gonna get a lot of hits on instagram or whatever you're on and more hits mean more revenue curious. What your opinion is on that. I don't i think. I think you're right. There will be Nontraditional success in in some of it will thank you for the call. Somebody would tommy. Will some of it will depend on where you are in certain markets. Lacrosse is big. Volleyball is big. But yeah i do think the stars are going to get the biggest numbers. I really don't know how it's going to go. Although today i was i had lunch with a an executive in that field and he told me that there were there. Were some rumors out there of some mega-deals that will be announced overnight. So tomorrow is going to be a very big day in this conversation. Thank you for the call. Mike is an austin. And you're on the air am i. Oh well i think you just kind of answered my question. I was gonna get you to save you would pontificate a little bit on this in i l. and how will be implemented. Because i don't feel like there's going to be very many people that are going to be doing this windfall bags of money all the sudden over this stuff. I think it's just a gripe or some of us that's in some big donors. Well i think there are some companies who are going to look for the initial publicity and by by announcing tomorrow they'll get it but ultimately this is going to be a local situation and quite frankly i don't think we can predict. I think everyone will try it. Al but for for every small business person out there are big business. Person doesn't matter. You wanna return on.

We've talked about the possibility that pruitt would be gone. He is now gone. Fulmer out as well. Your reaction another stunning day on rocky. Top back on again paul. You know. I think that the part that i guess is maybe the most surprising to me is the phil fulmer component <hes>. Because as you know we talked about the past you know there's obviously been you know. Rumors swirling about tennessee. Possibly moving on from jeremy pruitt for a while. I think a lot of people in the industry thought when that first report came out that tennessee was looking into <hes>. Potential recruiting violations under pruitt that was signaling that they would like to fire pruitt with 'cause a four forecast which you know they've made very clear that is what they are doing. The former component is a little different because he is such legendary person with that blake department <hes>. From his time as a football coach and you saw today in that press conference just the these university leaders really going out of their way to praise him and talk about how he's at tennessee. Ledge all those different things. So i think you know fomer kind of getting pushed aside <hes>. Calling it a retirement. But i think there's a little more to that is probably the most interesting component of this to me because now it means you not only have to fire new. But also just the way that he was talking about how pro had rebuilt relationships and all these different things it felt like to me at least that former was not out on pruitt as a higher to that point. So you know part of it could have been simply that you feel wasn't ready to move on from pruitt and it s part became what we're gonna make just wholesale changes here and i think if you remember paul you know one of the reasons why earlier in the year before we knew about all these recruiting violations. I was always a little skeptical. Pruitt getting fired in part because it would reflect poorly on former. And i didn't think four would want to move on from his higher <hes>.
