"That's that's his own dinner that he'll be having this evening there's also talk about another meeting that's happening that's even more exclusive than the corporate executive dinner and really I think for Xi Jinping this is an incredibly important moment not just sitting down president Biden it's his third trip out of China for the year but I really go back to what Secretary Gina Raimondo said over the summer was that she heard from businesses and she warned Chinese leaders that what she's hearing is that they might stop investing in their country and that US companies complained to her that China has become uninvestable. so Xi Jinping was dealing with a lot of domestic economic problems this is an important concern for him he and one needs to try to assuage these CEOs concerns. yeah that's that's a challenge for sure so Ann -Marie coming from the White House you know I'm sure they're with you and with others they're trying to set expectations what are reasonable expectations for this meeting in San Francisco? the fact that meeting is the deliverable okay but it's like when I get together with Ann -Marie yeah that really is the deliverable but I think if you go back to what the president said yesterday before leaving Washington he said he wants to get these two countries on a normal course corresponding being able to pick up the phone talk to one another there's a crisis making sure our military still have contact with one another that's not happening right now so that is a very low bar and they're clearing it by having this meeting a priority is going to be the military to military correspondence and then other items on the fringes to look out for is a fentanyl agreement we've scooped that that title will go after chemical companies try to stem the flow of fentanyl the State Department announced yesterday an agreement to pursue efforts to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 China may announce another story we scooped about this agreement Boeing they're considering unveiling on the sidelines of this meeting but really the premise of this is to be able to have communications normal communications and normal cadence communications between Beijing and Washington. Time is of the essence when it comes to cardiac arrest. The heart stops pumping blood the person stops breathing so the body is deprived of oxygen. The person quickly becomes unconscious and death will ensue within minutes unless there's emergency actions. Tom Ray is a professor at UW Medicine and the medical director at King County Emergency Medical Services. He says those emergency actions include those chest compressions. The recommendation is to do the chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120. We know within that range actually there's a bit of variability in how blood flows how blood circulates and so what we'd like to do is compare 100 to to 110 120 and see which of those provides the most life -saving benefit. three -year A study begins this fall that will also and for more information you can go to kingcounty .gov slash ems slash study. "And so I think that's part of what made them comfortable with it because if you're signing Matt Carpenter and asking him to do what he did last season over 500 at bats, you're probably going to be disappointed. But if you're signing him and asking him to DH against right handed pitching and serve as a bench bag against lefties and I think you can reasonably expect closer to what he did last year he's not going to be Babe Ruth again, but I still think he's these signings just kind of fit what the Padres are trying to do. If you look at where last season they had so many kind of stars in the photo and Machado and they had guys who did different things at the top of their lineup and cronenworth and jerks and pro far, but they didn't have the depth that they had and as much as signing zander bogarts and filling out the rotation and as important as all that was, I think one of AJ pro's biggest priorities this off season was finding those kinds of guys who can make this a more complete offense and suddenly that's what they have. And I think the Nelson Cruz contract was it's so low risk. It was so low money. I think off the top of my head, it was just a year and a $1 million. He wants to be in San Diego. He has a good relationship with a lot of these guys. I mean, Manny Machado is many Machado has said that Nelson Cruz is one of his favorite players and he wants to play until he's as old as Nelson Cruz is now. And so Nelson Cruz is I think a nice fit for the Clubhouse and the fact that he's bought into that role is valuable to and if he bounces back if the operation he had to kind of correct his vision works, there are more at bats for him to win. I mean, he can serve as DH and Matt Carpenter can play first and you can move J cron worth around the field. So I think these guys just kind of fit what the Padres are trying to do maybe more than they would fit a different team that could have spent more given them more at bats. Yeah, crew said the I issue had been bothering him for about a year and a half, which lines up with when his stuff and started to decline. So it's intriguing, at least at his age, I don't know how much you can bet on a bounce back, but at least the timeline is interesting. I think when they got both Carpenter and crews and somehow squeeze them onto this restore. We've been joking all winter about the Padres having more roster spots than every other team. And somehow when I look at them, they only have 40 players on their 40 man roster, so it's not actually the case, but somehow it seems like they just have, no, they just cram all those players in there and somehow it's not more players. I don't know how they do it. But I wanted to ask about two players they acquired at the trade deadline last year. They, of course, made a splash at the deadline, when don't they. And I think pretty much every player they acquired probably didn't perform quite up to expectations, Soto hater, drury, bell, et cetera but by the postseason, at least September, October, hader looked like his old self. So what changes did he make? And are they confident that those changes will persist? And then is he another guy that they have thought about trying to extend? Because free agency is coming up soon. Yes, they've got about it. I don't know whether that's how real any of those talks are happening behind the scenes. I think they kind of, before they traded for Josh hader at last year's trade deadline, they saw what they figured would be mechanical fix that would take some time to happen. So I don't think they thought that right away, Josh hader would be Josh hayter again, because if you'll remember in the month and a half before the trade deadline was when he kind of was starting to struggle, it was tough when he got here because the Padres were expecting him to be the guys locking down the 9th inning, but they were also in the middle of this really kind of tight nationally wild card race. They needed him to be the guy and he wasn't he blew a few saves and lost a couple of games in the 9th inning and all of a sudden he had to they removed him from the closer role, which was not what they were preferring to do, but which may have ultimately helped in the long run because I'm no pitching guru, but I don't think he was necessarily on the right plane and on the right path in his delivery toward home plate. I think they made some changes and pitching codes we've been able to essentially said at one point in late August last year what, I think it's time to get Josh hater back in the closing role and he saved a game in San Francisco and from there from that point in late August he was essentially Josh hayter again. So if that's what you're going off of, I think the Padres are expecting more of the same from Josh hayter in 2023 because from that point onward he was I think maybe even better than he was. Now in the postseason he was hitting a hundred miles an hour just kind of out of nowhere. He says that was kind of adrenaline based. I think more than anything else. I don't know that they're going to get that guy on March 30th, but the fact that Josh haters able to kind of hit a hundred when he needs to and bring that velocity and obviously the slider and he incorporated a change up into some tough at bats against right handed hitters last year. I would expect I would expect this year to be the old Josh hater, the guy that we know can lock down the end of games. I flirt my lesson. I'm not betting against Peter seidler in HA pro signing any player extending any player spending any amount of money. But Juan Soto, that seems like the ultimate challenge and the ultimate expenditure can they sign these Scott Boris represented one Soto to an extension and how hard have they been trying or might they try? I'm not going to say no because I've learned my lesson. I didn't think they were going to make a big I didn't think they were going to make a big splash with Xander bogarts. I didn't necessarily think they'd extend Machado when they did and I've been proven wrong too many times to say they will not extend Juan Soto before he reaches free agency. So I'm not saying no. That said, it will be very difficult to do so Juan Soto is Juan Soto. He will be hitting the free agent market earlier than in the peak of his in the peak of his career. And I think he could probably command as much money as anyone else we've ever seen in free agency. He's a Scott Boris client and Boris clients have a tendency to get to free agency. So I know the Padres have been interested in it. They're keeping those talks private if they're happening at all right now. There's a lot of time. And Juan Soto has said this every time we've asked him about that. When we ask him about his long-term future in San Diego, he has the same kind of answer, which is, hey, two years is a long time. And then from there, we'll see. And that is it does feel very, very off into the future. I think the Padres are definitely interested in doing so because why would you why would you not be interested in having Juan Soto around for the foreseeable future? He's obviously just such a good player and the kind of like they already have quite a few cornerstones, but I mean, just in terms of what he can do at the plate, he might be the best hitter of the bunch. If I had to guess one way or another, I would think that he reaches free agency just because of the value he can command and kind of the tendencies that we've seen with guys that where he is in his career. I just don't want to be proven wrong again, so I don't want to say anything definitively on that front. So I think you said earlier when we were talking about the Padres off season, the Padres had money to spend clearly they have. So the question is how I guess or does this mean that every other team also has money to spend and is not spending it, the Padres are kind of the ultimate well, if they can do it, why can't team X do it even more than, say, the mets who are in New York and owned by Steve Cohen, et cetera, the Patriots are a better kind of counter to a lot of smaller market owners that say they can't afford to spend. So how are the Padres making this work? What's the financial calculus for them? Do they care if they are profitable from year to year?

"Teams are playing games. We've got these new rules intact and it seems like all is going well so far. Very good. We're enjoying it. I was just out in Arizona for a week back on the east coast of Florida and it's good to get out and see as many teams as I can. It's been a fun start. Arizona is definitely the place to squeeze in as many teams as possible with the close proximity of all of them. We'll get to your trip in Arizona a little bit later on in the show, but let's start with let's play some catch up because there has been some big news since the last time we talked Manny Machado re ups for 11 years here in San Diego. Pretty big deal. It doesn't seem like just looking at the numbers how it broke down that he got the significant raise that everybody might have been expecting, but nonetheless, the Padres will keep them in a uniform likely until he retires. Oh, absolutely. Very long deal. I think that was a fine deal for him. I mean, those opt outs have been great for the players, started with Alex Rodriguez with his record $252 million deal and I mean, this winter alone took advantage of the opt out, obviously we know that he had a ended up signing three different deals, but certainly took advantage of the opt out rodon took advantage of the opt out. You know, a lot of guys did and Machado, you know, ends up staying in San Diego. I think the Padres were confident on this all along. I'd been at the owner's meeting a few weeks ago and some of the owners were talking about it and they felt that the San Diego was going to get it done. We saw many set of deadline of the February 16th and then say he was opting out. I think the Padres felt even after he said that they still felt confident. I think that delayed for one day after he said that he was opting out, got back to work and absolutely got it done. Yeah, I mean, he virtually said in the price conference that he really had no intentions of going anywhere else he wanted to be a padre. Certainly 11 years, three 50 will make you settle down pretty nicely in a city and, you know, there's still apparently according to you, John, there's still some room to possibly get some other things done here. Well, we'll see. I wouldn't put anything past the Padres at this point. I mean, you know, they could, they're liable to do anything. I'm not sure where they're getting the money, but I just give them credit, they're doing a great job. Peter seidler, the owner now, amazing. I mean, we've come from a point where they couldn't afford chase headley. I was shipping them off to the Yankees, and now they've got 5 superstars on that team and counting Darvish and then tatis when he comes back. We believe April 20th and, you know, I think Machado not a surprise. They are going to try to lock up hater and Soto haters of free agent after the year. Soto in two years, you know, just guessing here, I would say they probably have a better chance on hater, but I'm not putting anything past them. I talked to both guys and both guys are obviously loving it there. They love their opportunity to win. It's incredible Clubhouse, amazing talent, and you know, that maybe that gives them a little bit better chance to lock guys up and like I said, I think with hater, you know, maybe it can get it done. Not putting anything past the Padres. But, you know, he is one of the best two or three players in the game, probably the best hitter in the game. You know, and he talked about how important free agency is and you know, he's got two years to go. If they can get that one done, I'll believe anything. So we'll see. Yeah, this might be the tall, the tallest climb that the Padres have to make in terms of retaining a player or going out and getting one. But I did find it interesting. My antennas went up hearing solo. I think it was yesterday, say that he's open to having extension talks. That's not something that's not the kind of talk you normally hear from a Scott Boris client. But you got, you've got Scott speaking very positively of the organization. You got Soto saying he's interested. You're right. We can't put anything past the Padres at this point, 'cause I think they've really changed the way we look at the organization now when it comes to acquiring or signing players. Amazing. Yes, so told me that they are open and they're waiting and I'm sure it's not going to be a long wait, you know, season starts now in less than a month. So, you know, they're going to reach out and Scott was very positive about the Padres. I'm sure he loves what they're doing overall. I think he said they moved a mountain and it's called the crush more, yeah. Much more. I tell you what. It's time to come up with this stuff, but he did. That said, those are nice words. It is still Scott Boris, it still is one Soto. You know, we'll see. I mean, it's going to be a huge number. We know we already turned down $440 million. So that's the starting point at this point. You can't offer less than that, although, you know, you obviously, the little transition getting there, but he looks good now. So I think they love him. They give up 5 players, young players for him, and they'll make every effort, but, you know, sometimes trying isn't quite enough. We'll see. Yeah, it's also important to remember free agency is two years away for once. So this is his platform here and for those who may not be familiar with the term. This is really like the most important year before you get into free agency. So I'm sure the chips will fall where they are and I think Juan Soto and Scotty B will kind of let that happen. We'll see how that kind of situation changes. Obviously this year, a little bit different. Spring training has been a little bit different for the last three years, right? You had the COVID year, the first year, no problem. You had the first year out of the COVID year. And then last year, because of the lockout, spring training was a little bit shorter this year. You got the WBC which starts next week. Guys are tuning up for it. It seems like it's going to be a pretty

"My big concern buster is all these guys are going to be leaving for the WBC. And we're not playing the same rules in the WBC. Dusty banker is worried. We're not going to get our guys back until like two weeks before the season starts. So to really iron out these rules, we're only going to have two weeks instead of a month to do it. All right, since we last set a podcast, Manny Machado worked out at 11 million, excuse me, 11 year, $350 million deal. Tim, I said at the time when Machado told reporters, you know, I gave him a February 16th deadline. I was like, yeah, that doesn't apply. When know how much man he loves playing for the Padres and how much the Padres love Manny and if you're his agent, Dan lozano, you did the right thing and taking advantage. You got a player on a team that's spending like crazy. You absolutely make a deal. I thought it was a no brainer this would get done. Yeah, I was not taken by old man. He's out the out. He's going to go play for somebody else. I told you that day. Let's just see how the season goes. Maybe he's Soto, Bogart's and tatis junior formed this unbelievable force of the top of the order and man. He goes, I don't want to go anywhere. Well, it already happened because Peter seidler kept his promise and said, Manny Machado is my number one priority. And then he took care of it. And they're not done buster. We know other gigantic free agents are out there. And he's got to get so signed long-term. So the money spent by the Padres a lot more is coming. All right, so during the game on Monday, I got a chance to interview Jordan walker, the super prospect for the Cardinals, who is enormous. And of course, I could have asked him about the baseball stuff first, but no, I was going to ask him how big he is because when I saw his listed height at 6 5, I was like, there's no chance he's 6 5. I knew he was taller than that. And so I asked him and then he got the biggest grin. He's got a great smile. He's like a 35 year old 20 year old with his personality with his comfort level and acknowledged, yeah, you know, yeah, I have grown another inch. I mean, he's Giancarlo Stanton big, and I do think he's going to have a huge impact Tim in the big leagues. Right. And you guys were telling us yesterday during the workout that he had a home run on a backfield that ended up landing on like the tarp above the media area and weren't all suggested well that went at least 450 feet. So classic you guys are sitting there and a guy hits one on the roof right above you and it could only be that guy 6 6 two 50. I love it. This is why baseball's spring training is so great. You get to see some of these guys really for the first time and you're just blown away by how big they are. And I got to say, you know, in past years, you'd have a 20 year old who hasn't appeared in the big leagues new to sim. They're going to send them to the minor leagues. That's not how baseball is these days. Like they assume that the teaching will continue with the big league level. They want to get high end talent to the big leagues. They're trying Tyler O'Neill and center field in spring. If they can make that work, then they would play Jordan walker and left field so far so good. He looks great, and I do, you know, I love the quote from skip Schumacher after Saturday's exhibition after he hit this monster home run. He said, look, I was in the Padres organization, tatis, junior, was that guy said, you know, he's like tatis junior in terms of his impact. I'm going to be fascinated to watch him develop. Well, I love that. I mean, Andrew painter aged 19 might make the Phillies Anthony volpe maybe that opening day shortstop for the a. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but these are really young kids. And I'm a big believer. If you think they're ready, let's go right now. If you need that wild card that one guy to get you past the Astros or when your division. Sometimes you got to take a chance on a young guy and see if it works. In honor of you, I also asked him the first time that he dunked. He can remember the first time that he dunked and he told me. And I said, this is a question that I know my colleague, Tim kirchen would want to know. The answer to, and he said 14. But he couldn't remember. See, if you and I had ever dunked in our lifetime, we would not only know how old we were. We would know the exact date, right? We really exact date. We might even take the rim home and put it up in our trophy room. Buster me standing on your shoulders. We still couldn't dunk it. That's a fact. And by the way, I am so fascinated by the whole dunking process. My first real dog as an adult was a black lab and his name was dunk. That was his name because I just have always loved anyone who can dunk it. So Jordan walker, I'm sure he was jamming at 14. Love it. And I didn't ask him this. I actually in the drive, I was like, I should have asked him. I'm assuming he may have been named for Michael Jordan, right? I mean, all those kids of that age. We get all these jeters, you get all these Jordans. So, you know, who knows. Next time I see him, I'm going to ask him that. Bleacher tweet for a Corey Rupert asks, when the rule changes, will we see a player with more stolen bases than total wins for my reds this year? Tim, what say you? I'm going to say the reds who are not good are going to win more games than the stolen base leader. Look, I'm a believer buster that with your bases. We might get some more action. We're sure hoping, but I've talked to dozens of players about this. And Max Scherzer for one said, I don't see the stolen base rate going up significantly more. He told me, with the base being that much bigger, he said, I just have to be one, two, 9, to the plate instead of one three O. That is a microscopic difference, but he's smarter than everyone. He's already done the math on this. And he's not saying there won't be any stolen base. He's just saying it's not as big a deal as you think on the stolen base. So I don't think anyone's going to steal 60 bases this year. That's my guess. And before you go, I want you to weigh in on the great handshake saga of the weekend. I just before I got on with you, I push send on a note that Major League Baseball's investigation is not the right word. But looking into this, it's over. They consider the matter settled.

I saw some games this weekend and I saw a left handed hitter hit a liner into right field and it hit the ground and I'm like, shouldn't there be a shouldn't there be a third baseman standing there to just catch it on? Am I seeing the shift actually lead to hits? Did I see that over the weekend? Jeff? Did I see it? You know, I've never been a huge opponent of the shift, like I've always thought that it was just going to bring singles back and people aren't coming to the ballpark for singles. But at the same time, when a ball gets hit on the screws and because of defensive positioning a guy just happens to be there, like I looked at that as much as, hey, good for the defense. Good for the scouting. The numbers. Yeah, but I want you to put yourself, put your guys in a position where they can execute a play. But the other side of the coin, I completely understand why a left handed pull hitter singling to right field is music to many people's ears. But Jeff, let's put everything that we've just discussed together. Yes, you're not coming for singles, but you're seeing a runner on in a pitch clock going down, and now that guy's going to be taking a lead. And now with the bases being larger, maybe that guy steals a base and then maybe somebody actually hits one in the gap and we see action and it's not strikeout walk home run. And a game that moves along because the shift will open it all up. How about that? Yeah, there is no good counter to that rich. You're a 100% right. Like it aligns with everything that they're trying to do. I, you know, as somebody who has a deep appreciation for incredible defensive plays, maybe I'm just being a little sensitive to the defenders and their ability to put out up on the board. But yeah, what you say right there, listen, more guys on base is more action more action is good for the game. So it's why when it comes to the shift, I wasn't against fanning it. I wasn't for banning it, but I can see the benefits certainly on both sides. Okay, and lastly, where did the Jeff passion here on the rich eisen show? Lastly for you, where did all the money from San Diego come from? What is happening with the Padres, who now have extended Manny Machado, and does everyone on asking multiple questions? Does everyone on San Diego have a ten plus year 300 plus $1 million contract? I mean, what's happening? Yes. It's incredible how they were able to do that. I think what's happening is twofold here. Number one, it's really amazing rich what happens when an owner prioritizes winning? Really incredible to see Peter seidler coming out. And saying, you know what? I'm in a small media market. My television revenue is a fraction of what the Dodgers 90 miles off the coast are. And I don't give a damn because I want to win the first World Series in franchise history. And I'm going to bring in and keep her out the best players who give me the best chance of doing so. Such a novel concept. To win. And not trying to make a profit. And the Padres certainly on a year over year basis started going to lose money. There's just not enough revenue coming in even with the sellouts, even with a season ticket list that had to be cut off. Because there was too much demand, even with only one major professional sport in the city. There's still going to lose money because the payroll is seemingly high. But what the Padres have done rich is very simple. They've taken some of the equity from their growth and from the growth of professional sports teams across the landscape where you see a portion of the Milwaukee Bucks selling for three and a half $1 billion valuation today when less than a decade ago they were bought for $550 million. Well, that appreciation happened with the Padres too far for 800 million in 2012 would easily sell for over $2 billion today and the padre said, you know what? We're going to take a chunk of that and we're going to bring in a strategic partner who's going to give us cash. And we're going to reinvent that cash in the actual product, which is on field players. And that reinvestment we hope is going to help build our brand, continue to build our awareness and more than anything, build a championship caliber of all club. And if we do happen to win the World Series and the returns on that investment are going to be absolutely incredible long-term and short term. And then, of course, Otani will top that list by a large margin before I let you go. I'm sure you're going to be in on him too, rich. Oh my gosh. And then Soto, they're going to have to pay Soto too. So walk me through the timeline in your mind is the trade deadline, a trigger is opening day at trigger. What's the ohtani timeline for you for a new contract or trade this year in 2023? Well, my personal economy timeline is that every day is a show hey, it's potty day. But in terms of extension, I don't see the angels getting anything done, frankly, I think he's too close to free agency and there's too much out there. And in order for him to stick around with the team, that he doesn't know if it's going to be very good. And here's the truth, if the angels sank or even if they're just sort of mid this year, I could see him moving at the trade deadline because if he's going to leave there and I think the odds are probably more in favor of Shohei Ohtani ending up somewhere else next year than being back for the Los Angeles angels, you'd better get as much for him as you possibly can because I'm sorry, but one drastic for show hit one compensatory traffic for showing us how to be leaving, adding a good deal. So to the mets give up axe capital for him. Is that what it is? Is that what they have to do? Jeff. I mean, what a bonanza that would be. Rich if ohtani stays healthy and performs anywhere close to the way he's done over the last two years, the number is going to start. Start at 500. I can't wait. Jeff have a great rest of February because I'm calling you in March, which is just the other day. I look forward to that. Look for more of my phone calls. I can't wait. Thanks for the time here, sir. Appreciate it. All right, glad you got it. We did. We did. We got it in. It's safe. And we can now complete the rest of the interview, which is right now. Thanks for the call, Jeff. And he has just stepped out of the batter's box. At Jeff pass and follow him. Okay. The man from whose brain, who do you think you are, I am? The 11 year anniversary of it was yesterday. Pete Weber, baby, he's coming up next right here on the rich eyes and show.

"He said, you know, basically made it clear he's really not going to be revealing much. I think already. And you know, I just went up to the Met's GM Billy eppler and certainly apple has a history with him as he was the DM of the angels when they did get ohtani and he said to me, oh Tony is a member of the angels and that's all I'm going to say. Good answer. Very sensitive. You're not supposed to talk about players on other teams. I get it. I was kind of going up on an off the record basis, but since he said nothing, I can reveal that he said nothing off the record and, you know, it's going to be quite a situation here where we're talking about a guy getting probably a half a $1 billion, you know, I mean, he's one of a kind. There's no question about that. And he also brings in sponsorship and signage and all sorts of revenue. So, you know, it's a difference. I mean, every judge was a big free agent, those short stuff, big free agents, but this is another category entirely. Yeah, this runs completely. This runs deeper than just what he does on the field. This goes to butts in the seat, this goes to merchandise so there's so many layers to a guy like Shohei Ohtani. And he won't be alone in this free agency. News comes down to day via Dennis Lin of the athletic. He says that he tweeted out, it wasn't a secret, but Manny Machado publicly confirmed he's told the Padres he intends to opt out of his contract. He declined to get into negotiations or on a potential extension with the club, but did say he'd like to play as long as new teammate, Nelson Cruz has. So, I mean, that's a pretty firm, you know, I'm going to free agency. We're not going to have any more contract talks. And so that until that happens. And so now you have Shohei Ohtani and Manny Machado who will be available to the masses. Yeah, I'm a little surprised. I was at the owner's meeting last week and there was some hope there to get something done. They have clearly been talking about it. And suing the Padres are willing to spend, give them credit, Peter seidler, our groomer, they did a fantastic job, got borts and, you know, they keep going, extension for Darvish, so I understood their hope and even suggested they had opened now that hope to supersede the opt out is gone and we've got another big free agent. I thought he was the MVP last year, certainly Goldschmidt was a great candidate who won the award, but Machado, one of the best defenders I think of all time, even though somehow he was a nominated for a gold glove at his position last and just a terrific all around player and you know he's established in San Diego. So I'm not going to say this is not going to happen. I still think they have a chance. They're a team that has really shocked us. I mean, you were there years ago. I mean, from San Diego and they never could spend with the big boys. I mean, it's not a small market. It's a mid market, 12 market, but in terms of media market because they're kind of hemmed in there by Mexico and certainly Angeles to the north. The TV market, it does not provide what other TV markets do provide. And give them credit, they clearly must be losing money. They're not talking about it. I talked to one of them yesterday, but I give them credit for trying to do everything they can to win and they did make an effort here with Machado. We don't know exactly what that effort was, but you know, he's still very viable, excellent free agent with surprising lest she went on auto did not opt out, you know, similar type situation, similar age, similar pedigree, and that was a shock. And you know, it's probably shouldn't be a shock. It's only surprising that the Padres were not able to get it done because they've been able to get almost everything done that they've tried. They did try for trade Turner and they tried for Aaron judge but, you know, they did get one of the big fish in Bo gurts and they've done so much more than anyone. Any of us would have thought they could have done. Yeah, a few things because, you know, as you mentioned, I'm pretty close to this. The first salvo really was put down by AJ preller. He had mentioned, I can't remember. I've been at you Darvish just press conferences that the ball was at the ball was in Manny's court. Manny then responded by saying, no, actually the ball is in your court. You can go to the Padres looked at it as Manny was still under contract beyond his opt out. He man he looked at it as I have, I am a free agent after this. And so now by putting himself as a free agent. Now, maybe negotiations could start, but it sounds like Manny Machado is content on going to free agency and seeing where it goes. I will say this the difference in Arenado and Manny. I think was Arnold opted in. What was that last season he opted in, John? During the season. That was before this kind of money started to get funny here this off season. I mean, I think it would be, it wouldn't be smart business by Manny, not opting out after seeing the price tags that were handed out during this off season. So I think this was, this was coming no matter what the scenario was. Right, but I don't know. I had to know he was giving up some money. Oh, for sure. I mean, he's one of the best players in baseball and he had to know he was going to be able to top what he had left, even before seeing what judge and Correa and bogarts and Turner got, you know, so there are guys who are comfortable where they are. I mean, me, I'd be comfortable in San Diego. I think here you go. Indeed. Some guys, you know, Drake Turner was offered $42 million more to go to San Diego and he preferred Philadelphia to San Diego. Me, you know, I would go to San Diego for 42 million less. All right. But, you know, everybody's got their own taste. And we'd heard Machado, it's kind of set up things there, but you know, everybody's competitive in this game. That's how you get to be a great player and he's obviously competitive and wants to do better than he's got right now. Yeah, you know, the interesting, the other interesting element is you wonder how much are not all was jaded by taking the most money he could in Colorado. And then that completely not being worked out. Now getting the St. Louis, which from a market standpoint, I mean, they aren't one of the bigger spenders in baseball. I wonder if that played in his mind and taking the opt out as opposed to trying to get a little bit more so that he could have the pieces around him, certainly something you would think that he thought about. I want to move to another category. And that I don't know if you happen to see this Corbin burns, went to his arbitration hearing. And as a former player, I know, most agents will suggest that you don't go to these meetings, for the very reason that Corbett burns found out. And he says that this relationship between him and the brewers has changed in a way that I don't think can be can be mended.

In the nephew of the great Peter O'Malley, a guy who could have mailed it in, but Peter seidler didn't and in 2012, he bought a team flat on its back except for Tony Gwynn. Yeah. And he bought the Padres. And to me, it's almost NFL like what he's done. I mean, this is a Bloomberg business sports story. It's just going to keep on giving. What Peter's side has done with the Padres is historic. Am I right on that? You got to go back, let's be blunt to like back in 84 when the Padres were playing the tigers for battling for the World Series. They haven't been this relevant and a long, long. But this is like what crafted with a patriots or exactly. Right in my head right now, I don't have the high key analog, but it's extraordinary. I over a decade what this guy has done. We talk about it all the time in the mornings is that these kind of trades that take place now with the Padres, with now you've got, you know, I mean, it's amazing to me. Phillies want Manny Machado, Bryce Harper

"To be feeding clear Phillies fans display all they've done. What they've done has been extraordinary despite all they've done. This off season would be considered an utter failure as affiliates. Don't walk away with Manny Machado. I can I can guarantee you for certain the front office is here. That. And I think no matter what it takes whether it's three thirty or three fifty or even north of that. I didn't the Phillies will do whatever is required to get done. Yeah. I said to Scott Miller, my sense was that John Middleton who made the comment about the Phillies, you know, perhaps spending stupid money. He would basically have to grab the steering wheel away from the front office analysts. What do you think? I I agree. I mean, those if they find a way not to to pull in Harper tho those are going to be word that he eats for very long time. I can assure you of that. All right. Let's talk about Manny Machado earlier in the week. I wrote a column in which I suggested that. I mean, I flat out don't think that the timing of the Machado signing is right because I don't think they're pitching develop enough. We we know that they have is tremendous wave of prospects coming you, send me a note after that though that maybe disagree a little bit both to an extent, I agree into an extent. I don't offer you both sides of the aisle. Here's the Padres. Lost ninety six games last season. And now have agreed to three hundred million dollar deal with Machado in that dynamic is practically without precedent. Before yesterday. There had been thirty nine nine figure contracts handed out to free agents in major league history. But only two of them were signed by team that won fewer than seventy games the previous season the oath. Dick's cubs. Went sixty six ninety six signed Alfonso Soriano to one hundred and thirty six million dollar deal. The twenty ten nationals went sixty nine ninety three. They signed Jason worth to a one hundred and twenty six million dollar deal. But the Padres of the top ranked form system, according to baseball America among other outlets, including our own law since two thousand five thirteen of the fourteen teams with that number one distinction made the playoffs BUSTER within two years. And the only exception was the twenty eleven royals and they wound up making it to back to back World Series in two thousand fourteen and twenty fifty. So let me ask you if you were Peter Seidler who is the owner of the Padres. And he's the one who's making like that not a general manager like AJ prowler. Would you have made the same decision that would have made the exact same decision? This is this is a city. In a franchise now that has the opportunity to explode because of the because the chargers have left they play in as we all know the best climate in America. Now have the opportunity to be the biggest show in town. I think Manny Machado though, he isn't Bryce Harper. In terms of celebrity is probably that present a better baseball player. Just in terms of his tools, Dan, Bryce Harper is I will go on record as saying that he will be well worth three hundred million dollars over the next ten years. And I will also point out that the five year player option is not something that shouldn't should should go without being mentioned because as you know, the collective bargaining agreement expires after three years, you never know what the market might look like in five a really shrewd move by Manny Machado when his representation to give them that player option after five
