"Tell me. The NPR news quiz. I build Curtis, and here is your host, who doesn't understand why people don't like it when he uses a rotisserie oven for even tanning. Peter sagal. Thanks, Bill. You know what's really great when really interesting, famous people come on by to chat. I know Peter, for example, here I am. And I'm grateful, but it's also fun to talk to people like, say, actor and singer Alan cumming, who came by our theater in Chicago in December 2016. I asked him out of his many roles what he was best known for. Oh, it's so hard to tell. I used to sort of gauge people when they'd come up to me by that age, or some sort of demographic. But now I can't even tell. It's really amazing. There'll be some little kid will come out and go, I love you, I'm masterpiece mystery. And then some old granny will come up and say, I loved you know, X-Men. It's just so difficult. Yeah. You've done all these extraordinarily different movies for everything from eyes wise shut to viva rock Vegas. That's right. Do you have a rule by how you pick rolls? Obviously, not if you look at my. The Flintstones in viva rock Vegas, that was just for the aesthetic challenge, I'm sure. I always wanted to, you know, I'm Fred flintstone, fanatic. So I wanted to get dressed up in a green outfit, and he suspended and wires for weeks, and then the check cleared, I'm sure. Yes, definitely. But it weighed 200 pounds, and it was made out of stone. We were looking through your resume. We found some things I had never heard of. You hosted a talk show with your dogs, so it wasn't really a talk show. It was called midnight snack. What I did was I would introduce a film. And my dogs would be there on the set with me. And my dogs would kind of grade the film. Where the how would they indicate their opinion of the film? Well, honey, she was the bigger dog. She would do two buzz up or

"The NPR news quiz. I'm Bill Curtis, and here is your host, who loves to cruise on summer nights with his top down, and the stereo blasting fresh air. Peter sagal. Thank you, Bill. Now that we get to see people again, we're taking some time this week to revel in how great it is to see people. For example, in the suburb of 2017, we went to San Francisco, and got to talk to Lars Ulrich, drummer of the greatest metal band of all time, Metallica. Peter asked him about his first career ambition. So is that true that you grew up playing tennis? That was your first passion, right? Yes, my dad was a professional tennis player, so I grew up on the tennis tour and there aren't many tennis players in Denmark and I was ranked in the top ten in most of the age groups. Right. So when we moved to Los Angeles after I finished school in Denmark, I wasn't ranked in the top ten on the street that I lived on. I love the fact that your birth is a rock and roll legend came out of bitter disappointment. How did you come up with the name Metallica for your band? Well, I came up here actually in the spring of 1981 and ended up at a kegger over on strawberry hill and I met a bunch of really cool San Francisco kids running them most named Ron, and he told me he wanted to start his own fancy, like a hard rock fancy and where he wrote about all his favorite bands. And he asked me whether he should call the fancy Metallica or metal mania. So I suggested that he called it metal mania

"Before the break a man and a woman allowed poor traveling soldier to spend the night in their home but the selfish couple made him sleep on the floor with nothing but his shabby patched up. Count to keep him warm. The winters nike darker and colder and before long the soldiers entire body felt frozen but his brain was on fire as he cooked up a plan to teach the greedy pair on lesson right around midnight. He leaps to his feet and raced to the kitchen. He plunged his hand into a big jar of and smeared the thick greasy stuff all over his face and he put on his coat and knocked the man and woman's bedroom door. What is it soldier. How dare you wake us up in the middle of the night. I am so sorry to disturb you but is so hot and stuffy in the living room. Would you mind opening a window. The man and woman gaped at the soldiers drippy sticky face the living room with the draft easiest part of the house especially when the fireplace wasn't lit and yet this soldier with his tattered. Ragged coat was sweating so much he needed to open a window. The couple was confused but they agreed to their guests. Request gonna burst of wind swept through the living room. They scurried back to their snug cozy bedroom and slammed the door but then an hour later. The soldier came knocking again. What is it now soldier. We're trying to get some sleep. I know and i apologize but even with the window open. I'm so hot. I could pass out. Would you mind opening the front door. The man and woman's jaws dropped with the window open. The living room felt frosty as an icebox. Get the soldier wanted to open the door. Are you out of your mind soldier with the door open. The house will freeze. The soldier shrugged. Well i guess altus take off my coat then. Perhaps i'll be more comfortable without the man and woman watched as the soldier removed his scruffy worn up and laid it on the floor there. That is so much better so sorry to bother you folks. I'll see you in the morning for the rest of the night. The man and woman couldn't sleep a wink. The soldier had them positively flummoxed. How could the fellow possibly stay so warm. Was it really that shabby patched up coincidence. Could it be magic. When morning came. The man and woman found the soldier in the living room. Lacing up his boots sent getting ready to go. Good morning you two. I trust you slept well as for me. I slept like a baby once. I took off my coat. That is the man woman flashed the soldier a smile jazz about that coat. We were wondering how could we trade you for it. This was the moment the soldier had been waiting for. He stifled a giggle and feigned. Surprise mike coat you say you want to trade for my coat. Indeed we do. We want to trade it for this. Love league goose down jacket. Here it's too bulky to wear while chopping word or feeding the horses or driving market but your code would be perfect. It's so nice light yet. So nice and warm. The soldier gazed at goose. Down jacket truly was beautiful but t pretended to hesitate. I don't know folks. this coat has been with me a long time i. I'm not sure. I'm ready to part with it. To the soldiers delight. The man and woman took the bait. Oh we understand. Come pool lately. That's why we'll sweeten the deal. We'll give you one of our finest horses plus an entire bag of silver coins. What do you say. The soldier acted like he was thinking it over. The man and woman waited and waited until at last. The soldiers face broke into a grin. I say you've got yourself a deal. Folks thank you so the solar traded his ragged tattered coats for the man and woman's goose. Down jacket then. He mounted his fine. New horse slung his bag of silver coins over his shoulder and road down the hill. Warm snuggly hand laughing all the way once he was gone. The woman pulled on the patched up and went out to the staple to tend to the horses. It was a nippy snowy morning and by the time she was done brushing and feeding. The animals cheeks were bright red. Her lips were pale blue and she was shaking like jelly husband soldiers. Magic doesn't seem to be working for me. Perhaps you should give it a try. All right i'll wear to market so the man put on. The soldiers coat harnessed horse to the cart and set off down the hill. The snow was falling in great clumps now and each biting cutting gust of wind felt like the sting of a be. The man's teeth shattered. He could barely move his mouth and when he lost all feeling whose fingers and toes he turned right back around and headed home but he didn't go alone. He was so freezing cold that he picked up some travelers along the way just so we could huddle up next to a warm body or two. It was the first free ride the selfish man had ever given. And do you know what it wouldn't be his last. When the shivering man returns to his home on the hill he told the woman how the soldier had tricked him and from that day forward a couple vowed to change their ways and.

"Open House Peter Sagal on this week's Wait, Wait. We look back on those days long ago when we thought 2021 was going to be an improvement Join us for the news quiz from NPR this afternoon at three on 93.9 FM W. N. Y C It's politics with Amy Walter. We're back with more of my conversation with Adam Serwer of the Atlantic and Jelani Cobb from The New Yorker. Had just asked Johnny if President elect Biden would be able to move Washington beyond this moment, and if Republicans in Congress would be open to working with him on the task at hand, just on the basis of it. You know, there was this conversation around the time that Biden was being certified as the winner. Or at least we electoral votes were coming in to give him the victory that you know, having spent, you know, decades in the Senate. And knowing how to glad hand and maneuver bills through the Legislature. He would have a different relationship with congressional Republicans than Barack Obama did. And I thought that was tremendously naive idea. For one. We've seen no reticence, seemingly no remorse from the congressional Republicans who voted effectively to side with the mob that stormed Congress this week. On About the election being stolen had led to violence, including has we now know the death of a Capitol police officer? There's nothing to indicate that think that there's something We're moving in a different direction as it pertains to this and then the other bigger problem is that I think Americans have thought of his optimistic. And that optimism can easily bleed over into a kind of denial on and When we look at, you know all of the moments that have preceded this We've just bright sided them when Donald Trump emerged and began Calling plays from the fascist playbook. People began saying, Oh, he's unusual. He's uh, an outsider. He's a maverick. He's always other things as opposed to saying what he was in, You know, Adam can probably speak to this, too. There was a whole slate of black journalists, opinion analysts policy people who were saying that this is being driven by the idea of racial retrenchment. And we kept getting pushed back on and heard that the famous cliche now about economic anxiety, and so the real willingness to make a committed Approach to saying we have to address you know what has happened and fundamentally recognized the danger that it presents to the republic. I'm still not certain that were there. Adam, you want to respond? Yeah, I mean, well, look, my mother was born into a state where my grandfather could not vote because he was black, on boast of the country was perfectly fine with that at that time, And I think you know what I'm saying is not particularly unusual for millions of black people in the United States on because you have fundamentally different perspective on you know. The concept of freedom in the US and how fragile it actually is that I think you know, because of the way the history's taught in this country. Most people who do not have that history within their family can sometimes struggle to understand. The Trump era is ending in dramatic fashion, with the governors of Maryland and Virginia, offering to send their their state national guards into the capital to defend it from an insurrection incited by the president, United States that is dramatic. I would not have necessarily predicted that it would end in that way but is, Jilani said it was clear from the beginning. Trump was the kind of person who would make those kinds of decisions and who who's 10 years president could lead to that type of thing. Because it seems so much of this is driven by the idea that there are the really are consequences. Toc these actions that we saw at the Capitol. Yes, Some people are going to be arrested. We now are watching members of the Cabinet resign and Conservative commentators denouncing the president. But At some point There have to be Significant consequences to that, including for the president. So Jilani. I'll start with you. I mean, Does the president need to be removed from office in some way to something more significant Need to happen? I don't think anybody who takes democracy seriously thinks that one Branch of government should be able to weaponize a mob and send it to do its bidding. To immobilize another branch of government. Have been say that your democracy is in good shape. Yeah, I think that you fundamentally Open the door to all kinds of abuses if there aren't immediate Swift consequences. So that kind of action, especially now that we know that people have lost their lives. A zoo result of these, these actions needlessly lost their lives. And just think about this contrast for a moment. One of the most somber things that any president it does is send people into harm's way. That you know, as a person who was too who takes the oath of office, But you may have to request that Americans do things that may likely get them killed. In defense of American democracy and national interests. What we have is the neatest inversion of that idea that we can imagine. Where we have people being killed needlessly. Where the people who were trying to uphold the interest of national security. Actually being attacked on behalf of the president of the United States. If we're looking for a more profound betrayal of the office, I don't think that we can find one and short of removal from office. I don't think that we have done enough anything less than that. Be insufficient to say that this can't happen. Adam, What do you think needs to happen? And what about for Members of Congress as well. So I think Donald Trump should be immediately removed from office. And he should be barred from ever holding office again. And then to the extent that he bears legal liability for any of the things that happened during his administration, he should face the consequences again. You know, to go back to the reconstruction. They're the men who Overthrew the reconstruction governments by force. They became governors that became senators. They ended their lives as prominent government officials. That's one possible future. When you look at this, If there are no consequences for it, there will be more mobs. There will be more violence, There will be more attempts to overthrow the results of free and fair elections by force. Adam. Sure. Jelani Cobb. Thank you both so much for joining me today. I really appreciate it..
