"The biopic. And on and on how much time we really want to spend talking about these movies. But I think the great innovation of them was basically, what does face writing so many of them? Who's the guy who wrote the queen? Peter Morgan. I think that Peter Morgan organization of this idea is really interesting to me because he's focusing on moments as opposed to an entire life. I think that he, the liberties he takes and I know that there's a lot of controversy with The Crown and the way he's handled the royal family. But he has a point of view and it is expressed in these films and I kind of like that way of thinking about how to approach these movies. But again, I don't need more of them. And unless you really have something to say in which I will see them in which case I will see the movie and determine for myself. But to stick with Elvis for a second, the Elvis problem I had aside from the fact that it is completely delusional about you have B.B. King literally saying to Elvis, go on and steal my music, I don't care. The people are gonna love it. And I just feel like what Austin butler is doing in that film is confusing to me because I don't know who Austin butler is. Like, I know who he is as a tabloid person. Yeah. But I don't know who this person is going to be going for. Is he going to make more movies? What's he going to do? How's it going to go? I don't know. But, you know, I feel like he's sort of, I don't know what he does after this. I'm curious because the movies are different now. He won't, this won't be obviously, isn't a thing that he didn't make two other movies last year, and this was the one that this was Academy Awards movie. So did you kind of not like it? Did you sort of like it or did you like it? I think Elvis had one great idea, which is the sex, right? The idea that any time this guy got on stage and moved his body, the way baz luhrmann arranged the response to Austin butler's Elvis moving his body is the single best idea anybody had in a movie for a movie last year. I didn't like the whole movie. I thought a lot of it was, you know, it's classic lerman bloat. But that one idea as cinematically expressed by baz luhrmann was so good that I felt like they should have just done that for two and a half hours because it was exciting, but anytime he wasn't moving or he wasn't in front of a microphone, the movie was dead. I really respected that specific part of it. I'm glad you pointed it out. I don't

"Show of the week is The Crown. It's new season begins streaming on Netflix on Wednesday. Joining us to talk about what this season will bring is TV guides Matt rauch. Good morning, Matt, this show just keeps getting more and more popular. Well, it does. And it certainly has got a lot more scrutiny in the wake of the actual queens passing away earlier this year. And there have been some pushback in the UK among people who thinks maybe it's disrespectful to keep telling this story or tell it now And it's moving into the final stretch really in this season and one more season to go. It would be because we're now into the point where this is stuff a lot of people still remember. We're in the 1990s. We're in the downward spiral of Charles and Diana's marriage. The sex tape, the phone sex with a Camila comes out in the newspapers. She gives that explosive BBC interview and all things kind of blow up all over the place and at the same time there are polls saying Queen Elizabeth has Queen Victoria syndrome. She's been in the job too long as she relevant. Is she out of touch? And there's a lot of metaphors to sort of make that kind of clear. So there has been some controversy around this season, but I think it is still done with the same sensitivity and empathy for these characters humanizing these very, very public figures. Yes, some of it is imagined, but that is what docudrama does. And I think that the Peter Morgan has done a really good job here. Again, we've got a new cast, so we have a meld of Staunton, the terrific character actress, now playing the queen and her twilight. Jonathan price is her Prince Philip. And Dominic West, who you'll know from the wire, is Charles. And a woman who I'm not that familiar with, Elizabeth de Becky, is uncanny in her impersonation of Diana. Just you can't believe it's almost not her in some regards. But she is a very pained person here. There's a lot of conflict. But if you like The Crown before, I think you're going to like it again. And this is such a unique thing about this series, the cast changes as it ages, there haven't been any misses yet really in these recasts. No, they're really haven't. And these are all really terrific actors and they were in the first two seasons and then again when Olivia Colman and Emma corrin and Josh O'Connor were playing all those parts and what we've also got Leslie manville, who's all over the place. She's got a current masterpiece mystery thing, and she's and she's playing Princess Margaret. And again, you just have one great British actor after another. I think sometimes the sour grapes are the ones who didn't get cast. Because it really is, it's amazing how they have kept the sort of credibility of these characters, even though they're played by completely different people every two years. But here we go. We're in the final stretch now. Okay, thank you, Matt. You bet. TV guides Matt rauch. Moments like watching my grandson's deal

"Here for our top two start us off. At number two, I have Cleopatra played by Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before how I went to see Cleopatra at the music box's 70 millimeter festival a few years ago. I'll admit for me mostly out of morbid, curiosity, but Debbie and my daughters were interested. We usually try to make that a family event. So this was one we all agreed on. Mostly new of its reputation as a colossal disaster starring Elizabeth Taylor. So imagine my surprise. What I loved it. And yes, all four hours of Cleopatra. The pageantry on display here, the director is Joseph L mankiewicz. It makes the other queens on my list look like poppers. They don't know how to live at them. They don't know how to do it compared to what you see here. This is especially true for the 9 minute sequence of Cleopatra's arrival into Rome. We have a parade of dancers, soldiers, musicians. It all culminates in Cleopatra's entrance on a towering replica of a Sphinx, pulled by gotta be a hundred bare chested men, she's encased in this gown and cape of gold feathers, gets carried down two Caesar on the backs of more men, and here's where we get to their performance, Taylor, calmly approaches him, playfully bows, and then gives him a wink. So like dunst in Marie Antoinette, Taylor is giving an anachronistic performance here in this historical drama that somehow works. Her Cleopatra is brash. She's colonel. She's very smart. She's a woman conqueror, especially in her scenes with Richard Burton as Mark Antony. You could not hold the territories under your command. True. Possibly. Then lord Anthony, you come before me as a salient. If you choose the regard, you said? I do. You will therefore assume the position of a suppliant before this throne. You will kneel. So if Cleopatra ever rolls through your town, preferably in 70 millimeter, grab those tickets. I really don't think this one would work as well on the couch. I probably would have drifted off at some point. I needed 70 millimeter for me to fully appreciate this. I promise you that if I ever do finally catch up with Cleopatra, it will be in 70 millimeter and it will almost certainly be at the music box. There you go. My number two movie Queen is following Bette Davis another all time great actress. And that's Catherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine from the Lion in winter. This was a movie we talked about as part of a bonus conversation for our patrons when we were doing our Anthony Hopkins top 5 and filling in some blind spots. Oh, that's what it was. Yeah, I was trying to remember. Disappointed that they didn't go with magic, but then I'm really glad I finally did see the line in winter. And that I can praise this performance and it can rate. So highly on my list, ebert back in 68 when it came out, loved this movie, gave it four stars and he nailed the biggest reason why the lion and winter is so good. He said, one of the joys which movies provide too rarely is the opportunity to see a literate script handled intelligently. Of course, if you don't have a skilled performer or a skilled set of performers, intelligently handling that script, it doesn't really matter how literate it is. This James Goldman screenplay adapted from his play has Hopkins and as King Henry the second, Peter O'Toole and not giving up an inch to him is Catherine Hepburn. It all takes place mostly in one day around Christmas, Henry is trying to decide which one of his sons will inherit The Crown, you know, that old yarn, Eleanor's determined that it be Hopkins Richard. So you get a conniving Hepburn, you get a caring, maternal Hepburn, you get a dutiful servant of England, Hepburn, and mostly you get a hilarious Hepburn who bickers and banters with O'Toole and delivers Goldman's barbs with delightful fervor. How hard do you find living in your castle? It was difficult in the beginning. But that's past. Fine. I've seen the world enough. No, never let you lose. You let too many civil wars against me. And a damn near won the last one. Still, as long as I get trotted out for Christmas goats and state occasions now and then. Or I do like to see you. So now, I'm famished. Let's go into dinner. On and on. And hand in hand. I chose that scene, Josh, but it was really hard to choose which bit to play from this film because I enjoy the dialog and I enjoy Hepburn delivering that dialog so much. And you mentioned the anachronistic quality to Elizabeth Taylor's performance in Cleopatra, here it's laced into the screenplay itself. There's a knowingness, a little bit of winking that I find really refreshing here. Another line I love is when she says, as her sons actually do pull knives on each other, she says, of course he has a knife. He always has a knife. We all have knives. It's eliminated three and we're Barbarians. Which I love because I think I'm accurate in saying you can read two different ways. You can read it anachronistically as if she's actually somehow saying from a vantage point of the future saying, you know, this is the dark age is essentially where Barbarians or it's as if she's saying the contradiction. Ironically, it's 1183 and yet we're still a Barbarians, right? It reads both ways. She has another line where she says, I know, you know I know. I know you know I know. We know Henry knows and Henry knows we know it. We're a knowledgeable family. I mean, that's great. And of course, Hepburn has so much more dexterity with that language than I just offered. She also has the great line in a world where carpenters get resurrected. Everything is possible. She won her third Oscar for the performance and although I haven't seen enough of the other nominees from that year to say she deserved it. I'm definitely not going to say she was undeserving based on her take on Eleanor of Aquitaine. She's wonderful. You like this movie way more than I did, but she was definitely the highlight for me. In addition to all the great comedic stuff you talked about, I love the knives line. It's so good. I also think of that soliloquy. She gives to a mirror where she's talking about her, her persistent beauty, really, which is also another meta layer, right? Because at this point, Hepburn was in the fourth decade of her career. So a veteran actor and layering it with a lot of meaning. So I'm behind this pick. You've got it number two. That brings us to our number one choices. Well, we're partly doing this list. Yes, because of the woman king, but also the passing of Queen Elizabeth II atom. And so it seems only fitting to include a portrayal of her on screen. I'm going with Helen Mirren's turn in 2006s the queen, written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen friars. So this speculates on the behind the scenes turmoil that engulfed the royal family in the days following Princess Diana's death. And just as the discourse in the wake of Elizabeth's death has varied, it seems from emotional distress for this beloved figure to absolute detest for someone who is seen to represent oppressive colonialism, mirin in the performance, manages to evoke to me at least both sympathy and discuss where you land on that trajectory you may interpret it a little differently, but it does seem to me that mirin is trying to capture and does capture a lot of these qualities. I think she does it by getting a hold of what I think, at least seemed to be a true quality of the real woman, stoicism. I mean, that was even part of her public persona, this stoicism that here in the queen, it could be cold, it could be cruel. There are scenes of cruelty for sure, but it also involved the sort of honorable steadfastness that this position demands. No, it is, people want glamour and tears, the grand performance. I'm not very good at that. I never have been. I prefer to keep my feelings to myself. And foolishly, I believe that was what the people wanted from their queen not to make a fast nor where one's heart on one sleeve, duty first, self second. That's how I was brought up. For all my complaining about biopics, Adam, I've got to say, this is a very, very good one. I appreciate the focused time frame that we have. The complicated portrayal of its central figure, this is not a lionization of her at all, and the standout performance and the Oscars agreed miran did win an Oscar for the queen. I don't know if it's out of fashion or if it was ever in fashion to like or dislike this movie, but I remember being a fan of it back in 2006 and of this performance I'm looking at my notes now from my top 5 performances of 2006 and I had Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II there. I thought that she did a really great job of playing the role without sort of

"Like I think in the book points out, like, you know, John ham could say, Jesus, and he gets a Christ, but I can't say Jesus Christ. HBO, anything goes, as you saw. So was that was that a sort of a turning point when mad men and breaking bend didn't Breaking Bad. We're not HBO shows, which everyone thought they would be based on what they are. I mean, look, first of all, you can't bout a thousand. The circumstances for each of those shows not beyond HBO were different. I would go to another example, which is particularly formidable in terms of House of Cards. So House of Cards, HBO was interested in, they're ready to do a pilot. And then all of a sudden, David Fincher gets a two year season commitment from Netflix. And that, I think, is the moment where you realize, okay, wait a second. The world is shaking under our feet. This is a whole new dynamic. We're not in Kansas anymore. And I think that that I think that was important. And I would add a fourth to the list, which is that the producers and the great Peter Morgan came to HBO first with The Crown. They thought that HBO was the natural place for it. They wanted to be there. It wound up being a disastrous meeting for a variety of reasons. That went to Netflix as well. So you start to see, I mean, look, Netflix is always had some advantages. They're going to spend a lot more money. They don't have to show profits like HBO does. But I think that when you start to look, can you imagine how House of Cards and The Crown not on Netflix but on HBO?.

"And so the queen has a wonderful performance by Helen Mirren, who fully turns into the queen in a way that's pretty astonishing. And the queen is another person who is on money and who you've seen him layered portraits of, but who doesn't know who is not supposed to really exist as a person? You know? And so this kind of starts Peter Morgan's project of interrogating Queen Elizabeth as a person, which then becomes the crowd, which I think is a show that rules. But it is just step way two thumbs up. But it is also about public and private lives. It's about the media role. It is about the political ramifications of all of this because Tony Blair is much quicker to understand what this event is going to mean to the people of the UK, but also to his government. And. It's about the weird interpersonal relationships when you combine family and politics and all of the above. So and another interesting thing about it is there's no one playing Diana. So it's done in archival footage and done in I think a lot of things that really did happen. But again, this sort of mysterious figure at the center. Of the movie. I think it's a masterpiece personally. Great movie. No Cuba with this one, 15 year anniversary. Right now, I feel like it's 15 years since it was released. It's really good. If you haven't seen that one, check it out. Also, just check out the films of Steven first. He's the man. One of the earliest guests on the big picture, in fact. Oh, that's like 78 years old came to the office, came to the chapel studio here at the ringer, just hung out with me for an hour. So nice. Had a nice time with them. Very very good filmmaker. Remember when we could do that? Yeah, that was fun. Okay. The queen is a lock, no brainer. I won't quibble with that. Okay. I think are you gonna make a bid now for the number two on this list here?.

They're accessible. Don't worry about it. Do you want to see one appreciate weddings that could do that too? But there's a test. Yeah. I was gonna say would you officiate a wedding, but you I mean, a celebrity wedding that might be a little bit. I feel like I've brought people together. I've seen, you know, ushered them down the eye, but I've never actually been the person. It's saying dearly beloved. I'd love to. It's a good. It's a good feeling. It's a little like godly in some way. I definitely stressful. All right. Now for some royal drama behind the scenes of The Crown. You guys watch The Crown? Yes. Okay. You have to I have to watch it. You have to watch it. I hate it. Though. I'm never a big royal family fan. I'm like, whatever. Who cares? They're just people, but after the crime. It's so much she is something. Fierce. Princess Diana's friend, jemima Khan has quit the show, though, over what she tells the times is a disrespectful portrayal of princess die. She was hired by The Crown creator, Peter Morgan to write scripts for season 5. So she didn't like the direction of the show in regards to Diana's character and how they were portraying her and obviously she knew this woman in real life. I mean, the question is, would you quit if you were her? I say, absolutely. Yeah? I created sword, though, because it's like, if you feel like you're close enough and you want to make sure that you protect the legacy, you want to have a seat at the table. You want to be there so you can voice your opinion. Hopefully shift things, steer things. If you're not in the room at all. You have no more. Then you have no voice. Well, this is where we get a little plot twist, okay? So according to the times, jemima and Peter were dating before he got back together with Jillian Anderson, who post market Thatcher. You're like, that's what it is. Okay. So I mean, and these two have Margaret at a smart Margaret. Juliana Anderson and Peter Morgan have been on and off for a while as well. He's getting around to this guy. He's taking a lot of women. Interests. So why did she really? I question why is she like it's more of a lover's quarrel than a creative difference? Yeah. Probably. But that's sad because if she was there to kind of protect the legacy and now she's like, my man. Sorry Diana hope it all turns out okay. That's messed up. God, the whole thing. I mean, he really, I don't know how he's meeting those women. Okay. On sex, clearly. Clearly, but the timeline just seems a little bit anyway, whatever. Would it be hard for you guys? Have you ever had to work with an ex? I am still friends with all of my exes. How is that? Not that they were that many. Because it's that communication that, you know, saying friends after the fact. So I probably could work with an axe. I've never had an acrimonious separation, where it's like, I never want to see it. But the most part for the most part, yeah, everybody I've dated, I'm still friends with. Exactly. I don't know if I want to work with them. Yes. If I can work with them while the breakup is happening. That's the problem. It's so fresh. It's the wounds. Exactly. I also think it depends what you do, how much you respect that person in that field. To just work together for the sake of both being hired for, I don't know. I think it's very touch and go. And also, it's really nice to stay friends with your ex but I'm kind of the mindset of like, do we need to? If you work together, but he's bringing the new girlfriend on set, flaunting her in my face. Okay, that's a problem. You girlfriend, but she's also the old girlfriend. Right? And then and Julie was also the old. I actually need to dig into this a little bit more. We need a relationship chart. Yeah. But we really do. All right, you guys coming up. What you would do, what you do if you found out you were raising someone else's baby. The shocking mix up that has everybody talking plus Missy Elliott's big celebration with lizzo and Sierra. Mona was there, and she's telling us everything next. Hip hop icon Missy Elliott got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. She was joined by lizzo Sierra and her manager, of course, miss Mona Scott young. Yes. But not tell us everything. I'm sure this was a huge day for you. Amazing. I'm just, you know, it's a combination. I told the story when I was introducing her about 26 years ago, I met her at Lil affair. She was just super little. Yes, but he was on. And so I flew out to Palm Springs, but anyway, she was this super shy. Woman in the back of a limo who was just like, I don't want to manage her. You know, and so here we are at 25 plus years later. And, you know, lizzo said the most amazing things just about being inspired by Missy and seeing herself and Missy. And of course Sierra, who was always amazing and Missy was one of the first mentors that she had. And then I had a little celebration afterwards at the addition and shout out the folks that were so great. But who showed up there, oh, Janelle monae, and yo yo and MC light and Ella cool J oh, CC peniston surprised us. She showed up as well. Oh God, did I forget anybody? It was just phenomenal salt of salt and pepper who always gives accolades to. So I saw a little cool J jogging this morning. You did, did you? This was after last night. So they all had such wonderful things to say and Missy super emotional. Anybody who knows who knows that she cries at the drop of a dime. So we're all like bawling, but it was amazing and we had so much fun. It was so great. I'm a big believer in giving the flowers. Absolutely. They gently take him out. And that's not. Factually true not factually correct but Because what happens. He broke into our bedroom and she screamed with. The guards dragged away. Both of those stories get across her care and concern for the working class. I'm kidding i mean it's bullshit it's like it's the reality and the fiction bear no resemblance to each other like there is an instant where the queen in real life was going. I what his life like you know. It was like showed a fucking shoot him get him out of here and she said he he ran. She ran past him or something like that. But in the series. You're right it's meant to. It's it's meant to give her that juxtaposition like oh thatcher's the bad one and that's actually what i was gonna say earlier that the crown seems to do what a lot of police and military shows do here where even when you're given some some some Examples of corruption or or evil. Doing or whatever you wanna call it. It it's within the context of the bad apples and the institution is more or less good and they're still justified so yeah. The crown does a couple of days. We've got a couple of problems here or there. But we're never going to really as far as thatcher right nazis. But we got rid of him but we got rid of him. Scott frank was gonna talk mark which we can circle back to but the only other thing i wanted to say that i thought it's not an innovation because they're always doing stuff like this but i thought generally the decision to have the unseen voice of god announcer do the nominees and then have the celebrity. Come on to say the winner. I thought that was perfectly reasonable efficient. Change the leave dinged the oscars multiple times for like we're going to have everyone come on stage. Or all these different things they do just to try to innovate or disrupt but like that seemed good to me. That made sense. That kept it moving credit for that. Its guy on a night where i kind of feel like. It's it's sort of becoming pretty self evident that netflix is pivoting away from these kinds of shows. You know obviously. the crown. many years both in production development and has been a real workhorse for netflix internationally. Over over the last couple of years the crown wins best drama. Odd gillian anderson. Olivia colman and josh. O'connor alwin for acting and one for writing and for directing drama and emigrant one. The red carpet from mclaren was wearing a bathing cap. Which is just outrageously cool. Like and then queen's gambit obviously winning for what directing and for a best limited series So the the essentially the big one at the end of the night net flicks finally brings home all these boards after spending hundreds of millions of dollars. I'm sure were unlike promo and fica events and everything that goes into pushing a show show for these awards and yes. There is a final season of ozark and a new series season of stranger things. And i'm sure other things. I'm not thinking of you know. We didn't necessarily have queen's gambit earmarked as an awards juggernaut when it first came on our radar but there have been some interviews with netflix executives. Recently that i thought were not cagey but we're very sort of political about their positioning of yes. Of course we still want awards fair. We still want prestige. We still wanna be edgy. But we also understand we have a much bigger constituency than that just you know. We need to make things for lots of different people. So netflix winning a bunch of awards at a moment where i'm not so sure. What the next net flicks award show is is is an interesting development for me. I agree it is seismic in town. That netflix won those awards and won more trophies in total than hbo this year. That's ever happened before. But i think that you're right. This is really attest moment for what is driving the company and are they truly in. There's no reason to think that they are not at this point. But are they truly in their dna a tech company or a hollywood company because even the most buttoned up slightly jaded. You know. I see the big picture i see. The one zero binary code of. Who's watching what in what actually making us. A profit for our shareholders. Person could be swayed by that much red carpet. Love you know. I think that there is a sense when When amazon got into the tv business there were like oh. Jeff bezos bought a house in hollywood. We're gonna wine and dine him in the agencies are gonna take him out like he's gonna fall so in love with celebrity whatever he's just gonna want fund our big dream here you know and that hasn't necessarily been the case with amazon. They're spending a ton of money. It hasn't really been the case for a guy. Don't see tim cook at these events. The jason's today because called him out with the nickname. It's right i. I think that there's probably some aging columnist variety or hollywood reporter was just like netflix. You can't let the glitter fade you now. But i do believe that they don't i don't know if they care about the glitter. Both of those projects. Right it's worth noting and and we don't know we're not privy to the innermost thoughts of these craters whatsoever but didn't the crown get ozark. Also like didn't the crown. It's run curtail. It was peter morgan. Had it it was five seasons and then he was like no. It needs to be six and they were like great. Whatever you want okay. But yeah there. There's an end date on that and ball games. Yeah history but yes right. But i'm saying the if this was. Hbo they would be announcing a massive overhaul deal. Peter morgan he's going to turn his attentions to this or this unknown period or the sherman will become an anthology series of at different queens. And maybe the band queen and who knows like we gotta keep this. Going or queen's gambit is a spin off in the larger queen universe. all of this is to say is lease as far as we know. Peter morgan scott frank or not making their next projects for netflix. They're not like in the net flicks family as a creative entity. Nestlings was like cool. That's neat yeah. Like the stuff and netflix. Did how a regime notices flora's also lava that seems to be their corporate mo and it's working. Yeah and the only other inside baseball thing. i thought i would. Mention is just that. I think when various mergers and acquisitions happened everybody was sort bringing their hands about the state of hbo. And what would happen. Hbo and his hbo still going to be a home for the cream of the crop of television and i think they are. I think that. I may destroy you and hacks and merb'ys town all winning all those people being very a few sive about their experiences with. Hbo from the stage. Talking about The creative teams over over. Hbo seemed like things. Were still in known. Thank you to the creative team at. Hbo max they were just like thanks. Casey and hbo. And francesca in the whole team. Like even you take something from that. They're that they're actually jean. Smart was like thank you to everyone at. Hbo we all think of axes hbo show. It's not it is a universal television co-production for hbo. Max now was there a shake of. Hbo put the hbo team in charge of the programming of hbo. Max yes have. We talked about how like. Hbo programming remarriage have billboards all over town. Saying watch it on hbo. Max yes is this tenable. I don't know but so maybe genes tomorrow was just shortening. It and whatever but i thought that was noticeable. Yeah for sure. So did you have any other. Cut trades style like observations about what happened last night. Not really just to say it does well. I'm saying well. I want to celebrate how i thought. Remarkably finger on a pulse. The show was.

Elizabeth the second to buy menzies plays prince philip joshua corner who plays prince charles jillian on descent who plays prime minister margaret thatcher an mccord. Who plays chris as diana. well call. It's lovely to see you all now. I've so many questions and we've got some lovely kind of moments that we have a few clips. We're gonna play as well but pizza. I'm going to start with you if that's okay. And so this season season for the crown show. Casey's a new eater for the monarchy and the universe expands with the introduction of two iconic historical figures female historical figures princess diana on prime minister margaret thatcher picks up in early eighties. And how did you know what story's within naida that you won't need to include particularly with that's always the part of the process the takes longest is when you know. I knew coming into this. The season full was going to span. The period of time of margaret thatcher's rains prime minister. I knew going to go from seventy nine. To ninety some things obviously lee pounds it of time. Charles dina get married in that period of time mountbatten gets assassinated in period of time that we go to war in the full clones. And then he's talking about characters perhaps to them privately and then he thought just through the fantastic research team. Mark got you thought. Uncovering sutton magical of episodes which i didn't know deference you must be another model because you know this subject Coating over it for a while. So you get occasional beside the one about the cousins. The cousins regimental one where wages After store right. And i and i need the store up michael fagan breaking into the think pretty much always wanted to write attitudes so bit by bit by you. Come up. Have about twenty ideas. You just whittled down until you enough montana and your mentioned your research team headed of course by the fabulous on the braga who i love to. And it's such an important relationship between the research team. Isn't it in terms of you through and things out them then they come back to you with with with suggestions or all truths or you know with all the work process like i said precipitates smells actual writing. The episodes You write them in rewrite and rewrite the figuring out of the season and making sure that of course you know once once identified which stories you're interested in some of which have been uncovered by research some of which job i've made up in my mind. What should be like. The resuscitate generally tells me on raw. But did you know that when when you finally go you have to figure out you know. Have i given enough spicy to the characters you know. Each of the characters really sir. The riveting called blacks individuals. And so you wanna you wanna make sure they. Each have a an appropriate moment in the spotlight to inside so day. You have to start. What way not happen to the seasonable point. He's got for. The eighty percent of work is is my season identify wage. It's going to do. The rights is straightforward by parx token by riveting characters diana and charles. We're gonna talk about from their courtship to the broadcast around the world to millions deceive luke but in the show to the romance and the relationship between prince charles and lady before we discuss this. I mean it's grip in its heart wrenching performance from you booth looking to show a clip from episode ten war. We're charles and diana engage in a pretty intense argument over a trip. That diana's recently taken to new york. Let's take who are you referring to camilla. Why would i care about her tariff. How warning nights. I care about her. If you heard me camilla's who i want. That is where my loyalties lie. The fact is we my priorities. Well the mother of your children don't bring the boys into these. all right. fused government grotesque alliance every time. I think i've i've seen that seen so many times. In every time i watch it i. It brings me to kind of just tears. I can just feel the emotion for you guys. It was lovely to watch you reactions slight fear and kind of. I don't know if i want to watch this or no inure. Ohio and josh and emma. Congratulations on these performances. In this season. Because i mean i could spend hours talking to you about it but that particular scene what you remember about foam in that seen i remember it was one of the most difficult scenes we show because we took these characters to pay so we haven't really taken them before in terms of really expressing with such ferocity their emotions which they had to kind of like sculpted around before. I remember just like being a bit like so taken by. When i like josh went in the i only god it was waived because by that we just we show that quite a on him. We were such good friends and sifang each other and it was a way to suddenly have to really dig deep like like scraping each other. It was it was strange. We emma says like such. I'm very very kinds. Each each morphing that read on the day we doing this thing. I'm saying reading. I wanna talk how you find that balance between me not going example of being in the moment and a not leading into the future tragedy of of the relationship of diana we already know. Did you almost have to kind of try. And keep the eye of of your mind and sticking with where the relationship was and where they were at that time. It's something we always bear mind but it was helped us to try and see the issues that they were dealing with an ingratiating as Just like quite normal ones like people walking out of marriage all known trying not to see it as like get bogged down so much. This chops diana antiques. Like the writing series. Upstanding way because it's you realize you're playing like all right as much. the will. Yeah i wanted to ask you peter but right in that that particular scene how you how you find words the energy and the pace as well to convey fractured in the marriage relationship to the wolves time at the time we got to this point like emma was saying.

Who also and yeah. Yeah yeah and and also just in terms of what it could have done to our relationship at the time you know. I think we were both scared about that. And whether it was going to just just was even doable. It's always challenge for people working together. I said yes though. It's an it's an. It's great that it came together. And i thought it was really interesting that you have said that of all the direction you might have received one of the things that peter said that was maybe most helpful was quote. It's really important that you maintain an element of yourself. We cash you for a reason. Close quote what. What did you interpret that to me. Like what what should not lose of yourself underneath the hair and makeup and padding and all of that. I guess i guess how helped was to not try and force myself so much into perfection with her that i kick 'cause i think i i sometimes have the tendency to kind of lose the bigger picture and to just get really really specific in terms of Other elements of and and and i think that for whatever reason that opens something up to me it. It kind of le. Let the steam out of the pressure cooker a bit in one part of the i guess is you know. She had a twinkle in her is she had. You know there was You know in that was part of what particularly the men around her aside from phenomenal brain and her sense of humor with but you know she she. She highlighted a twinkle. She knew how to to grab people. And not that. I have that but it allowed me to allow a tiny bit of siphoned like mischievousness. But there's a there's a it would be really really easy to get to closed too serious right and somehow it allowed me to play a bit more inside of her. I guess maybe we'll and i know that. Of course you do the due diligence of reading and watching and whatever to to go into a character like this. That's based on a real person. But i thought i was curious what your takeaway was or as you went into. Play this woman. Who in some you know in some ways. It's a bit confounding to have a female trailblazer who gets to that level of success and yet as noted brings along only one female inter-cabinet cabinet eleven years. Who has such a different perspective on the world in some ways than the the queen even though they're six months apart in age in both have reached Kind of status. That very few other women ever would. I guess just was there some rosebud moment for you. That made you say all right. I guess i. I get where she was coming from that. I in a way that i didn't before only in that i understood how based on her childhood house. She became the woman that she was. I mean i mean some of it. I think she just came out of the womb with honestly and a lot of it. I think Was was influenced by her parents in the circumstance in there Methodism and Her father being alderman and the fact that they you know they had found the sharpon and they were incredibly frugal and you know and she also really you know. She was not only a monica's but she loved gray. Brady no sheet shed. She felt like she could save the country. You know she really felt it she. She felt like she knew that she would be the honest. She really believed that she knew what it would take. And i mean. I certainly don't identify with that in any way shape or form.

But it's not hasn't got bad tomes much more celebrate tree and and and much more kind of a rounded hopefully portrayal of of club but they they very much kept us on right and which i was reading said about because i mean i understand it but i was hoping that even after the film come out maybe there would be some some kind of connection because you know you concentrate on planes someone like i i loved it did genuinely kind of love full of contradictions and it can be very cruel at times and could be nasty to people and stuff but he was. He was an extraordinary. A great man i would say and and so afterwards i really. I really wanted to some kind of sense of not approval. But some kind of validation. Bits we we We were filming a. I think it was the oldest football grammont in britain. Time in chest chesterfield. I think and we were about to go up to leeds until matt allen road and with all re-creations of the leads team at the time and ola and we got a message from united. The film is footage of all those players being the dirtiest players and there was a screening in leeds. I didn't make that. I think it was a near riot. You know is such a dramatic such a brilliant thing to notice. The drama remains there. Lots of people organs genius. So i date so he took did all the things that i played tony blair in three of them. He wrote stumped united. he wrote frost nixon. He's done the crown recently as well and His his he's brilliant in all kinds of ways but his genius is if for seeing drama. Whether you'd never think was like the thought it'd be interesting to the queen. And i will you know even frost nixon. He just gets all not only. Is that interesting dramatically but it also gives your audience the thrill of lifting the veil. And see it's like seeing the wizard behind the curtain and as you get to see what it's really like. I mean has a brilliant kind of sense for that and he definitely go in with cloth i remember him saying to me because i got a bit pissed off because all the things we do the other one is always the interesting character blair and brown in the browns. Review: The Crown Season 4
"Let's move on onto the crown. It's been about ten days most people who loved the crowd. I think we're done with the season. Sadly one of the season five do you know now for two years. Yeah because they filmed the two seasons together together usually with the cast. Because i think it's easier on production and then also with the cova of it all. I don't know when they will be able to start production so that there was a two year break between seasons two and three and i think there'll be more to your break. Who will you miss the most which actor being extremely honest. It's going to be joshua crowder for. I really am what a monster charles becomes in the second half of season four. And what an effect josh o'connor still has me. It's really quite something. I said this via text by the scene episode austrailia when they do the kind of the ballroom dance for the show which is a real event. I've seen a lot of side. By sides of the they got the close. Perfectly matched was so charming. I don't understand why all men don't learn how to dance ballroom dance because it was like ninety seconds and i'm sold completely infatuated. He can do whatever just absolutely despicable entitled selfish things. He wants to do for the rest of the season. And i'm like oh but this guy really charming. It's it's pretty sad. What happened with him and his family. Don't you think how about the australia episode again. Catch the chris ryan on the watch. Yes i thought it was effective. My i don't wanna say my struggle. Let me just say season for masterpiece. Love the show love all four seasons. Great great television will watch again. Can't wait it. This is a show about the crown. And honor show about princess diana and i know that intellectually but i hid obviously been waiting for the diana's season my whole life that sometimes i wanted a little bit more diana or just like there is a lot more to be told obviously it would be told from her perspective and it would just be a different show so i i hate criticism when they're like the show. Were another show. The australia episode was. I thought a very well done like condensation of the entire diana phenomenon into one also and in reality that like happened over a span of years and the up stage effect and everything that they kinda that they illustrate was was very real but develops over time. And it's like the media plays more of a role. And i think there is like a lot more stuff between charles and diana and you know there's all this stuff with What's going on with diana and her believe me and her family is shown and handled pretty sensitively but not always developed from her side. If that makes any sense yeah. I think if you also you read about her her mental health struggles were like it. Very extensive and it was went beyond believe me and i thought that like it was handled well but also like i think it's worth noting that there is also many other episodes throughout her life or at least heard adult life. Yeah exactly and i understand why because they are as loop says in the very last scene of the season. This is a show about one woman. And it's not diana it's about elizabeth and it's about that institution so and you could do one hundred episodes of the eighties in the uk. Like there's so much going on. So i understand the choices that they had to make narrative in order to fit it all in and i thought it did paint a like a pretty thorough picture. But i'm always gonna want more. I just really didn't care for her monologue on the plane about the baby. Not that i thought it was like. I'm not like she's wrong but i just thought that was like emigrants were seen. I was just like this is working for me. But i thought that the stuff with charles's was pretty good. Yeah i think. I continue to think. I'm a porn is like astonishing and i've been thinking a lot about what you said about how you're not a the huge a fan but that the performance kind of stuck out to you and i get and i think that that is really perceptive and for me kinda part of what makes it work. I don't want to say it's like intention early. But diana did not fit in to this family. It was like different energy. A different vibe. And there's a great line in the queen. Which is the peter morgan. movie about. Princess princess diana's death and the week after it. Which i recommend starring helen mirren great stuff as sort of like great crown prerequisite or if he also available on netflix. Right now justify But the character in the queen says you have to remember that there. Diana are diana or two completely different people. And i think the performance captures a lot of that and like the scene. Went diana's trying to hug the queen and they're they're talking at each other and it's not just that they have philosophical emotional differences but they just come from different worlds. they have different emotions different energies. It's like total total mismatch. And that's definitely part of the problem. So when she is making her stands are expressing her. Diana s. sometimes it's really heartbreaking and sometimes are like what are you doing. This is completely wrong as encapsulated that julia did not worry me about which i appreciate from spoiler episode perspective but from a personal perspective. The phantom of the opera video cassette was hilarious and excruciating and. I do think the first time. I like fully pulled the blanket up over my head when watching it. I didn't actually watch it. The first time i had to just kind of sit like that and know that it would end soon and then i read wound to watch the facial expressions that is bisciste. Yeah and i you know i don't. I don't think that happened in relaxed. Maybe it did. I've never read it. And i think i would remember it but really the billion joel performance israel israel. Yeah and it in caps elites. Maybe i think that poor diana who had a lot going on and as you said like a lot of mental health issues and believe me and didn't have any support like her family was not very helpful or totally absent in the case of the crown. But there were also some things that just really ideologies didn't align how about that and and that scene shows you why who it really is just like so much. I can't believe we're only gonna get one season about mc oran. I feel like i m not like her biggest fan but also feel like switching the diana character after one season. I don't. I'm not really in favor of but Must be a fairly significant time job. i'm curious to see how season five goes

‘The Crown’ Will Get a Sixth Season After All, Taking the Show Into Early 2000s
"We'll move on to the world of television. Talking about the crown extended for a six season. I want them to get to like season eight where it's present day. You're gonna be pretty close. Yeah, we're only going to get six. Now. We should be grateful that we're getting six seasons of the crown because creator Peter Morgan last year early this year. Said that now you know, we're not actually going to do six seasons. We're only going to do five because we don't have any more story to tell. Funny how that works. There's always story to tell. Yeah, there's always story with the royal fan Royal's air involved. I mean, this is I'm excited, but really Excited and so far as this was already promised, so I'm just relieved. I guess there's probably a better word. We were always supposed to have six and thinking was that he would do these in chunks of two. Three times through and I which I just love the A mechanism to tell this story, the the taking it Two seasons at a time with the same actors and then transitioning. It's just a lovely device. So here's I hope we get to see more of here's what Peter Morgan says. He says As we started to discuss the storylines for serious five, it became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons now. Unfortunately, Colleen, he does say to be clear. Season six will not bring us any closer to the present day. Sorry it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail. Now it's already been announced for season five and season six that Imelda Staunton is going to take over the role of Queen Elizabeth from Olivia Coleman, who is currently playing the Queen in season three. And then then, the

Fresh Air
Peter Morgan Presents "Successor" To "The Crown" As Series Enters 1960s, '70s
"Let's get back to fresh air contributor Dave Davies and his twenty eighteen interview with Peter Morgan creator and writer of the crown and writer of the queen the last king of Scotland and frost Nixon the third season of the crown starring Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth the second begin Sunday on Netflix you know therefore is just terrific in this role and I've been I assume you were involved in the casting what were you looking for and what did you see in her arms thirty one year old on the cost of care for which is now sort of with almost impossible to imagine we'll see you know she was overlooked so this doesn't reflect well on me but I will tell the story and live in shame so what time is we'd be so I would be sent the list of people coming to the costing some are looked on the list and Wednesdays as it were costing session would involve the following five young actresses I looked on the list like a one is that when that when that one of the other ones are interesting I'll come in at eleven to see that one I'll come in at twelve because I'm busy and important to lime faltered and who whoever the sky for business I'm I'm not into that I overlooked and snapped on no fewer than five occasions until there was one time where like simply couldn't avoid it because interest in the one before the one off the hook and so I then states to see her none of what what what no one should what's the matter with and if you want to talk to this when they said pizza she's been on for five occasions and each time you have studiously avoided and I suppose she's fantastic he what did you see what what did you see captivate what but it's not an easy part I mean you have to be both forgive me well I said but we have to be both playing in stunning you know the she has to have both and and then a number of the actors that came in was simply too beautiful you know to conventional beautiful too the faces did not have the full range because Elizabeth winter is a beautiful walls it is arguably still a beautiful woman but not all the time not from every angle and her face lights up you know with a smile and can look quite grumpy quite like a wet weekend when not smiling and be overlooking pulling quite plain and you need to believe she has intelligence and understand her intelligence because the queen country to what people think I think she has an intelligence and a very sharp memory and intolerance of fools but at the same time she's not that intellectually curious and so she three both quick and alert and yet at the same time capable of repose and being quite does fall so it's not easy and she has to be emotionally stable and I don't think and act to connect I'm across the chasm but it's so helps if they all thought and clamp brought a lot of thought into the pond and then active a lot of the stuff they shouldn't have to perfection eyesore in a in an instant but she could do it want to talk about we've talked a bit about the queen which is this the feature film that you did before you did the series the crowns was directed by Stephen Frears and we'll we'll hear seen here this is about the moment in nineteen ninety seven when princess Diana has been killed in a car accident and because she is divorced from the royal family the queen sees her death as a private matter with no need for a public appearance reason statement from her the queen in fact she takes her family and Diana's two boys who are her grandchildren to the royal St in Scotland come to to just get away while London is morning and be in this scene we're gonna hear she gets a call for the prime minister Tony Blair played by Michael sheen who is concerned because the public and the press are seeing the royal family as heartless because it's expressed no grief at Diana's passing so we hear the queen pick up the phone to speak to the prime minister prime minister good morning match day sorry to disturb but I was just wondering whether you'd seen any of today's papers we managed to look at one or two in which case five question would be whether you felt some kind of response might be necessary I believe a few over either editors are doing their best to sell newspapers that would be a mistake to dance to their tune under normal circumstances I would agree box well my advice is I've been taking the temperature among the people on the streets and all the information I'm getting is that the mood what would you suggest prime minister some kind of a statement ma'am I believe the moment the statements has passed I would suggest flying the flag at half mast about pounds and coming down to London the earliest opportunity it would be a great comfort to all people and would help them with that grief grief if it's come down to London before I attend to my grandchildren who just lost her mother
