"ESPN 1000. It's one timers way. Take a trip around the National Hockey League and give you a quick thought or two. Brian, lead us off. What's your first one timer? Well, Patrick, I can't believe it's 2021. We're still trying to figure out what's a dangerous hit. What's an illegal hit? Shortly after we got off the air. Last Saturday, the NHL announced a seven game suspension for Tom Wilson. No no stranger to discipline in this league. After he delivered an elbow to the head of Brandon Carlo. And his coach Peter Laviolette says, Well, that's a hit. If that's an illegal hit, we gotta get rid of hitting and I mean, come on it Not only was a hit it the fact that there was no penalty called on the play makes me wonder what the referees Di Morton appear. Lambert We're looking at, and I think they should have got some time off, too. But they're working Thursday night, So that wasn't the case. And kind of Murphy gets a match penalty. And rejection rightfully so and doesn't get suspended. So You know, At some point, this league has toe figure out what is what when it comes to protecting the players, and the players have to figure it out. And Tom Wilson's You know he come Wilson. He's a good, very good forward didn't have to do this stuff, but he's been doing it for years. So when you're a repeat offender like he is that that's why you see that the type of suspension that he got and the reason why Connor Murphy didn't get any. He's Wilson's got his 10th and penalty minutes active players right now, and the other nine guys in front of them have played five or more years than he asked. I mean, that's all you need to know. But you know, the officials have to start figure out what's what they can look at replay what they huddled up and came out with no penalty on Ben. He gets suspended and that kind of Murphy gets the match penalty and there's no suspension. All you need. You need some congruity here you need some. The NHL has to fear doubt so everyone knows what they're looking at. My one timer is the NHL and ESPN announced a seven year multi platform deal..

Washington Capitals' Tom Wilson suspended seven games by NHL for hit on Boston Bruins' Brandon Carlo

"Elliot seven game suspension for tom wilson. I don't wanna go over. They can prejudice a jury here. I don't want to go over the usual arguments here about did he. Didn't he intention all that kind of stuff. That always gets itself played out hysterically on twitter and we saw that fire tonight and over the weekend and no these conversations going to happen. But what are some of the questions that you had going into the tom wilson hearing and are you surprised that he had one in the first place and does any part of a seven game suspension. Surprise you you know. I think the most interesting thing i've found is that you know there are a lot of people who believed that. He only got suspended. Because he's tom wilson And that if it was just about any other player in the nhl who delivered that hit. We wouldn't be talking about anything here. And i think the capitals believe that. I mean you heard peter laviolette save. I saw the the hit. I mean his feet round the ice. He stayed down with everything. Looks like a hard hit in the corner of not not exactly sure what happened but to me. It looked like just a hit. You heard ovechkin call it a joke And one of the things we talked about on. Fridays podcast was. How frederick drove the capitals crazy on the wednesday night game the night to game two nights earlier when he was all over ovechkin than ovechkin spirit him and you were the one who asked okay. How was he allowed to do this. And then two days later they play again and on the shift with carlo. Wilson tries to engage frederick a couple of times. And frederick's noah got a constant winning a game here and he runs over carlo you know. Maybe he was frustrated. I don't know i i. I don't know how wilson would explain it but you know. Saturday is a day. I make a of my phone calls and i asked around legalized and people are just generic conversation. It came up. What do you think about wilson how bad you think he's gonna get it and i did have a lot of people say to me if this was anyone other than number forty three on the capital's nobody would even be talking about this. Nobody would be if it was a hit that anyone else delivered. It wouldn't be a penalty or suspension. A lot of people felt them. But that's what happens when you have the history right. All of a sudden people look at you differently. You don't get the benefit of the doubt name Four hundred other players in the league if they throw that hit they get nothing but because of his history. That's what happened in this case. Like i really believe probably looked at elliot. Moore's while that was a tough hit with a bad outcome. But because his tom. But but i think generally predisposed to assume the worst when it comes to tom wilson but that's a reputation that earned so on friday night. He throws the hit because there was head contact. The first thing everybody looks at is rule forty eight yep illegal check to the head and is the head the main point of contact and the answer there is no this is my guess. My guess is that the people in the nhl department of players safety said this is not a rule forty eight and then when they started thinking about it they looked at it and they're like we don't like this. Is there anything else it is and if you read rule forty one which is boarding. You know it's there you can make that argument. And i think that's exactly what happened. Is they made that argument. And they said that's boarding. Now it's new president's you know that's not the way boarding tends to get called boarding tends to get called when a guy has hit from behind and carl wasn't hit from behind i think that's one of the things that the capitals and possibly the players association discussed wise. You guys don't call boarding like this and at the end of the day that's why it wasn't also like thirty or forty games because boarding doesn't carry those kinds of suspensions historically the highest boarding penalty i could find. I suspension was zac. Rinaldo in two thousand fifteen. It was eight games. Right and wilson gets seven. So i think that's why he got less. You know the other thing. Is you know the capitals argued. It was a clean hit like some other people had said to me and the league just felt the totality of it all was illegal.

Washington DC’s Tom Wilson Not Penalized For Hit On Boston Bruins’ Brandon Carlo

"Almost literally took a 51 beating in Boston and in their four game win streak and pretty miserable fashion. It was a physical game, one that included a controversial Tom Wilson hits on Brandon Carlo that was not penalized. That sent Carlo to the hospital. The Bruins then had a three goal second period after that place, so coach Peter Laviolette, it's fair to ask. Did you guys get sidetracked by all the physical play? We knew it was gonna be physical. You know, you hear what's coming out of their locker room. You knew it was gonna be a more competitive game. The first game was physical. And so I don't know if we got sidetracked. I don't know if we were surprised that it was a physical game. I think where we got it all done tonight is that we're from a defensive standpoint, There's too many quality chances. There was too many backdoor tap ins. Backdoor plays where we could have done something better defensively, and our goaltenders really had no chance. While she turns lone bright spot came on its lone goal. Nicolas Backstrom registered career assist number 700 on his setup for Jacob Brana that makes back in the 54th player in NHL history to reach that milestone, but comes in a pretty bad loss there in Boston

"Then we go back. And we see what we have to do to make it all work. That's the way I look at it in Vegas. All right. We'll pause there when we were turned, you will hear from the new bench boss Washington capitals of Peter Laviola. We are pleased to be joined now by the new head coach of the Washington Capitals Peter Laviola who has won the Stanley Cup lead teams to the Stanley Cup final and hopes to do saying with the Washington capitals first of all Peter Congratulations and before we get into the specifics of the caps in the future I'm curious about the flag when did you buy the flag? Or do you have a stash of about thirty one or soon to be thirty two of these things in your house? Yeah. We should just get them all and then just start my collection. I can see when I retire at age ninety right I'm just GonNa get I'm GonNa get thirty one flagpoles across the back of my Lake Property and just let them all rep so It was you know we knew things were going down a road where it looked like it was going to get done and you know just going through the last couple of days my wife went online and found the flag and we're up here in New Hampshire. I drove my kids back to school with my wife we drove up from Florida word kind of stationed in Florida, but we have a family lake. House with my sisters and in Meredith. New. Hampshire is just beautiful up here and we ended up taking the kids back to school and staying here and so everything kind of happen while I was up here in New Hampshire and out, they have a flagpole that has seen a few teams flags on it in the past and It was kind of naked with just the US flag and we were hoping. To put up a new one. So she went and ordered it online and it got here probably four days five days before I really became official and so for the three days Pyro, like do we just put it out to just put it out and we ended up not doing it the day that we put it out was the day before I actually got announced. It was in the evening the win was. Just ripping across the lake and you know like right now they're the flags are just hanging. There is not much wind going on but on this day I just thought the picture was awesome the American flag with the capitalist flag underneath it and the red white and blue and the way it was ripping across there. So we sent the picture into the caps and they posted it, but it was pretty cool. I have to say in this day and age Peter for you to put out capitals flag the day before the deal was done. I know. That's risky because you know someone's going to risk. See It, put it out on twitter. All the sudden got five billion likes in the story breaks like that's bold move that's a bold move. Yeah. No I know the in. So I. OH apologies to like ten people and the day before they were calling. I'll give you a quick story I was on a zoom chat with the owner. Ted Leonsis and Dick Patrick a Brian and myself and everything was quiet the day before in the morning, which is odd you know a lot of times things get out and things get leaked out and so I'm on the meeting and I I can't remember who said it but they said well, is there any sign of it being leaked in somebody looked and said, no, it's all quiet right now we're the only four that no so if we Get some. If it gets out, we know it came from this four and at that point at that point, I wasn't saying a word like I was done talking and I had guys who are texting me and everything and I had to apologize you know half a dozen people after I got analysis. I'm like I'm so sorry but wasn't gonna I wasn't going to break that bond at trust with the three people that I was on the zoom call with. Give us a sense of from your perspective. You've coached a lot of different teams and a lot of different players what was attractive about the capitals to you at this point in your career. I've moved to the West coaching now. So that was the first time other than that I've been in the east and a of some of those players have been there for a while and you get to know him I think more when you're in your conference and I think just from my time in Philadelphia and even going back to some of them in Carolina coach against them for so long guy like Lovie you really get to appreciate his talent. and. How big and powerful and strong isn't what an elite player he is, and so you don't know watching their team and going into play them and I said in an interview earlier, there's times when we were in. Nashville and you know we play the Blackhawks and we knew that we would have to play a fast game. We would have to really be able to move the PUCK and move our bodies escape with that team, and then we'd go in and. We play you know Saint Louis or we played Anaheim and we knew it had to be a heavy game like you had to change your mindset on the way you're going to play for me. Washington was one of those teams it was always big. They just had big bodies out there. They were physical Nam they had tons of talent and they've been atop team in a successful team for the last you know half dozen years or so and so the fact. That they're constantly finding themselves at the top of the the league. In the regular season they're pushing in the playoffs all the time they found success back a couple years ago in the playoffs for me, it was just a real attractive spot to be and work with the opportunity to work with a great organization. Fortunate to work in thankful that Brian gave me the opportunity to be here and and work with these players which are some top notch players. You know I was looking through and I take a look at your history with players like yet Eric Stall. At closure ru you've had Roman Yosi. Unleash a defensive player but I don't think you've ever had anyone like Ovechkin i. just wonder if I know he's older, but he's still a rocket Rashard guy is this the best offensive player you've ever coached? I mean I think from a consistency standpoint with what he's done in his career. He certainly has to be talked about like that and even this year in a shortened season I push close to fifty goals is incredible and the fact that he's done it consistently year over year just speaks to the true talented he really is, and so you know he's he was one of the first phone calls that I had this morning just to talk to him. We had a great talk for about thirty minutes and we've known each other for a long time you know I coached. The islanders but when I got to Carolina I think it was right around the time that Alex was coming in as a rookie and he's played against my teams have been coached by me and I've certainly had to coach against him and try to figure out a way to stop him and keep him in check from an opposition coaches standpoint. It's really nice to spend that thirty minutes with them today and just talk about the future and and what that might hold. So it was great conversation. Then I agree one of the greatest goal scorers to ever play the game..

"Think they got four kids you need that stability you need to know for self worth contributing to your family is so important and I think this will help I'm really happy for that. A couple more things here before we get to Peter Live Hewlett, who's our guest this week on thirty one thoughts the podcast. What happens next in Vegas? Now Fridge I mean, all eyes are on the goaltending situation but there's you know decisions past Leonard versus flurry with with about four or five million dollars worth of available cap space some restricted free agents to sign and this goalie issue looming large over all of it. It's what happens now at the nights. You should describe to our audience because you know him from junior hockey and everything you should explain Kelly macroom into people, Kelly mccrimon, Brandon wheat kings, builder of Champions developer of elite level players. The Brandon wheat kings are for a number of years have been one of the Cadillac Organizations of the Western Hockey League. You can. You know our listeners from Ontario? If you WANNA context this is kind of like what the London Knights? To the Ontario Hockey League the Brandon Wheat Kings are to the Western league in a lot ways It's run like a mini NHL. They consistently crank out high high and players, and it is always a competitive team and a lot of that is because of the the hard work of Kelly criminal this team has just been sold to a local business interests but Kelly crimmins I think an auto as his chase for excellence and his ability to identify and develop hyon players is what many think in the long run you know landed him in Vegas in the first place he's a really smart hockey guy. And he's not afraid. No No. No. Not at all he's bold and he'll make. Any as a mandate from that owner to make big moves because as we've Seen Bill Foley wants a Stanley Cup yesterday. Thank you very much. Well, first of all I. Think the first thing they have to do is they're going to have to sit down with flurry. You know I'm a believer in this. Robin Leonard Five by five thing I think there's a good chance it's going to happen. So now, all the sudden you got twelve million on your goalies. And this is not the year that you want to have to try to move a goalie. There's just too many of them, right? And he's going to have two years at seven each basically to move it's going to be hard. Even though flurry is hugely respected and I still think he's got a lot to offer i. just think at this time that's not going to be easy. Now, I thought that he would get bought out because I think flurry will want to move on and to be perfectly honest Pittsburgh News Matt Murray I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he ends up back there working with Tristan Jari. Bite. I thought they were going to buy out. If they couldn't trade him. Someone said to me today they're not sure there'd Vegas wants to do that. So I think number one you've got to figure out is. What are you doing in goal like there's been a lot of rumblings about portraying Gelo and Vegas and. Someone told me today they were wondering if Vegas might take run if it's not portraying slow at Torrey cruch. Hang on hang up where's all this cap space coming from? Well, that's the thing like. To me that Vegas wants to make changes. I really do believe that Vegas is like we can win we can be better and we WANNA make changes. Their aggressive and owners aggressive and mccrum is aggressive. While, they found themselves a a norris trophy candidate in Shea. Theodore. That's come internal I looked at this team and I, said, you know next year cody class will probably be on the team. Maybe peyton crabs as well. She has some guys that can contribute on some manageable deals but if you WANNA think about bringing back I mean Chandler Stevenson's restricted Nick cousins is a restricted. You make the move with. Robin. Lehner like how are you moving out some of this money to bring all these guys in. Well, the other thing too about is that the shape Theodore's a lefty on your first power play and I don't know are you doing that but if you WanNa make yourself better, you get better players like the one thing is about Vegas if they WANNA move guys depending on what they WANNA do they'll have good players that they can move they. have good players on pig tickets though you've got one more year of Paul Staff knee at six point five. Yup Three more of Max Patrick Ready at seven. But then you start moving these guys and all of a sudden, you can say what you want a book last crabs and I just did but then you kind of have to replace these guys. I wonder on their Blue Line though. I do. Well, YOU'RE GONNA move in exact white clouds. got that spot Yup will you probably GONNA move in? So he's going to bump somebody right Yup and he's under a more manageable contract but that's still doesn't free up enough money to make the types of moves again, if you're going to bring back cousins if you're gonNA bring. Back, Stevenson that doesn't free up enough money to make the move. So we're talking about here doesn't all first of all flurry like number one is going to do with flurry. Number two, you need a new contract for Chandler Stevenson who played really well there. So you gotta deal with that and he's got our bright's the only thing I can think of there is. Let's just say for argument's sake that they're interested in a potential or. Anything else. First of all, you got to know you can get them secondly, you can go ten percent over the cap and the off season, and then you make your move like it's kind of like what we're talking about with Vancouver Right Vancouver I. Think they're going to see if they can re-sign any of these guys Marxism. Tan Of. To Foley and to fully might be the easiest and then decide once we got it dine..

"So Bill Armstrong is going to be named is the GM and the official announcement may come Thursday I heard on the weekend that it was trending in his direction although you're always careful I just heard on Saturday. That things were really moving towards him and the offer was made on Tuesday night and I guess accepted Wednesday. He's started to move up the list and the last couple of years like first of all when your team wins the COP. You move. That's kind of the way it works like a rising tide floats all boats right up. By around a couple of years ago, people started to tell me that this was a guy who I had to start watching and one of the reasons is Kinda done everything right? He's been a player. He won a memorial copy scored Memorial Cup winning goal and one of the most famous Memorial Cup Games ever. You want to tell everybody the story that was the Oshawa generals and the kitchen rangers, and that is overtime the Schwab. General's the kitchen rangers that one is a copps coliseum. Interestingly enough it was supposed to be the Hamilton Dukes or rather the dukes of Hamilton a hosting that thing but the had such a miserable season that they didn't end up being involved at all Lavalle and Kamloops with the other two. But that was that was a clash of like to powerhouse teams. The kitchen rangers squad was good and Oshawa is of course led by. The Legend in Oshawa Eric Lindros and he scores the goal show Windsor Fourth Moral Cup and he goes down in history as one of the most clutch goal scorers in the history of that tournament he was drafted by the flyers but never played in Nhl game he played in the NHL for a long time he played in the IHL for about a decade and he's kind of gone up every role he was. Coach in Providence and basically became an assistant coach. Just as he retired you know then he was a head coach in providence he was a head coach in the h. l. and then started moving up the scouting ranks. He's been in charge of amateur scouting and a couple years ago. I think the Saint Louis had to promote him to kind of keep them because other teams were trying to give them promotions elsewhere in their organizations. You know someone told me it was just a matter of time. He's a bright bright guy and I think that's one of the things that attracted people to him. As he's done different roles he's been a player he's been assistant coach. He's been a head coach. He's been a scout. He's had managerial responsibilities or organizational responsibilities including running age L. teams and things like that. He's dipped his hand in a lot of different places. I will tell you this like. There were a lot of people who felt a lot of different things about Arizona and the bonuses. The fact that they were late with their premiums you know all of this kind of stuff. In. There's only thirty two of these jobs and they are coveted and I think there were some people who said to him. Are you sure I heard he just said look I want the opportunity and I wanna go for it and I hope it works out for him. You know one of the things that's going on now it's a story I'm working on and it might get out before the podcast gets out. Is that you know they're having a bit of a battle with the lease over there arena. And I think that they've been served notice that some money is owed on the lease. And I don't know of the organizations in financial trouble I doubted it could be a situation where they're kind of saying we'd rather pay closer to win were playing again in sometimes these things all need to get worked out. So if this story gets out before the podcast drops, you'll understand it but if not, basically there's a lease battle right now with the company that owns the arena they play it. And I just think that there's a lot of things going on around this franchise right now that were red flags for people bite. People want these jobs. So I was speaking to someone earlier on this week about. China, and this is someone in the Blues Organization who said, What Are you hearing about Arizona and I said I hear it's your guy and he said Yeah I know I've I've seen a lot of things online. He said that would be a huge loss for us. He's well thought of. In that Blues Organization he's big. WHO's your source in Saint Louis Armstrong was. Not. Given that one up. But it was a quick conversation was ooh, that's loss for us. If that's true the like Saint Louis is a really smart front. Office? So they've got Doug Armstrong has got a lot of experience. They've got Larry Pablo who's been around forever. Yeah. They've got AL macinnis who's been around forever and as a hall of Famer they've got Keith Tkachuk and guys tell me that Keith could shocks opinions on hockey are excellent like he really adds a lot to the conversation there they've got robbed Demayo who played for twenty years and this was an opinion that was respected amongst that entire group and I think that's everything you need to know like I've heard that Those blues meetings, they really think it's one of the reasons they want because they're really honest and blunt meetings were all sorts of different perspectives get introduced and people listen to perspectives though these different perspectives so I think if you're widely thought of in that or highly thought of in that, it's probably a very good endorsement, Elliott. Also Saint Louis I'm a big believer as I'm sure you are as well in Second Chances Jim. Montgomery. Now, the assistant coach of the Saint Louis Blues over the spot held last season by Marc Savard. Yeah and first of all, I sent a note to mark just to make sure he was good and haven't heard from him. So I hope he's doing well, I heard that Babcock had gone the Washington there was a chance Montgomerie was going with them. So I'm not surprised. He was in the mix I mean I'm really happy to hear it. This is a person who's coming back from a lot and you want them to do well and part of. Doing well is getting back and doing something you're comfortable with a spot that you're comfortable with and Jim. Montgomery is comfortable with coaching. I. Hope this'll help like I. Really do I hope the fact that he's going to be back in a hockey environment in a good situation coaching is going to be good for him. So you know I think we all wish him. The Best Team were all happy to see him back. This is a challenging year as we all know from his family but as far as Jim Montgomery, the coach goes I mean his reputation as a coach focusing strictly on the hockey was that this guy was a rising star no there are a number of teams I believe we talked about the Rangers last season before they made the move with. Quinn investigated Montgomery because he was so highly sought after as one of these nextwave new breed NHL coaches. So I'm glad that he's got his personal situation sorted out I'm assuming that he does and that him and his family are solid and you know at the end of it, there's a released smart coach that's back in the coaching mix in the NHL. Elliott. Yeah and you know you wish him the best to his family. You know we had a chance to talk to him. You know a few months after he'd been let go and was trying to find his way back and I mean, the toughest thing was interviewing his wife because you know Jeff you know you and I were both married, we live public lives though not as public as a guy like Jim Montgomery but are good moments. Our bad moments they're seen publicly and our wives suffer with that right and. You know why I remember just when I was talking to her on the phone the no. She talked about how they were gonNA stay together and how they were going to work through this together and You know like all. I can really say is. I. Wish them the best, I. I can't help. But think that this is a great thing. I think Craig Baru Bay is smart. They've got Mike Van. Ryan to on that stuff It's a Great Front Office Organization we talked about it and you just hope for Jim and emily that This is a big step for them in their family. They've got a big family..

"Once player said it happened. Apparently kitchen denied it and another player back the first player. And you know you can't do that anymore. So I don't know if this is going to go anywhere else but that's kind of where we are. was there any indication from Bill Zito in your conversation about the influence that Joel Quenneville will have? With this organization I'm not saying that Joel Quenneville is going to be able to override trades or you know make trades on his own re anything like that. But this is a guy that carries a big stick. This is a guy that wields a lot of power based on who he is his track record, and if the panthers going to do anything, it's going to be in large part because of Joel Quenneville behind the bench. Any indication he's GonNa have some stroke in the management setup. I don't know if you'll get stroke but his opinion obviously matters. For example, one player who I've heard might end up in Florida is Mark Board yet Sqi. Now what do we know above board yet ski Great Team Guy Tough yes and we know he's not going back to Ottawa. To me when you're saying, you're not going back to eighteen. One of two things happens either that team and you realize it's not working or you think that there's a market out there for you. I've heard that that is the kind of player. That Florida's interested in will they be one of the busier? Teams? I don't know if they'll be busy like I ask though like I like I said, I heard a rumor that they were GonNa cut and like I said, zero said to me they're not gonna do that necessarily. But what he did tell me he's getting a lot of calls. and. He's just GonNa kind of evaluate it. The he wouldn't discuss specific players other than Brodsky but you look at his blue line he's got flat at seven and a half for five more years. He's got Yandell at six, three, five for three more years. He's got stroman at five five, two more years and he's got matheson at four, eight, seven, five, four, six more years. I, think they're going to try and move someone there. Well, I always come back to and I believe the phrase that Brian Burke uses when describing this here's shovel out the barn. Before. You can show the horses. How much of this right now, if you're bill zito is just I can't make my team until I get rid of some players, I? Think he's got to determine what the value is of his players. You gotTA figure out. How do people feel about your guys around the League? I mean, he's worked with your Mayo Kick Elaine in Columbus for a while. Yes. They're not kind of be a consensus. Okay. This is Yan. Does value. This is matheson with the big ticket, but you know what you think of Yandell or Matheson Erect Blad. In. Your market. But you don't know what the other necessarily. Twenty nine teams think of Act Bladder Handler Matheson. You'll know that. You think you know that but you don't know that. All right. More deals will head from Florida to Minnesota where Bill Garin is anything but silent bill garin is anything but inactive, we will get to the bucs Tad deal here in a second elliot but the latest deal involves the Minnesota wild and the Buffalo Sabres Eric. STALL GOES TO BUFFALO IN EXCHANGE FOR MARKUS Johannesson. So buffalo gets their long coveted second line center Markus. Johannesson. Who We believe is intended to be a center with the Minnesota. Wild. finds a new home Minnesota picks up more salary on this one Johannesen is four point five on the Cap Eric Stall Three, point two, both have one year left on their deals work with us on this one elliot what happened What's interesting about this is that yesterday which is, Tuesday, players had to resubmit their new list of. Teams that could block trades to if they had that option. And both Johansen and stall had those clauses. It was ten teams apiece and neither team was in a situation where they could block a trade to where they went to. And so they made the deal. And I was really surprised Minnesota would trade stall as Bill Garin said on the zoom call I was on I said I was going to make change and if I don't. Do the same things are going to happen and I think everybody's kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, which has DOUMBA and we'll get to that in a second. I think Buffalo when they heard that stall could not block to them. I, think they want him really badly they've been looking for a number to center behind Eichel they really wanted to upgrade their. He actually makes last next year than Johannesen does. And that fits with what they're trying to do and plus there's a lot of connections there. There's Jeff Skinner who they have to get going played with stall. There's Kevin Adams who's running the team. Now he played with stall I think they jumped at it I think stall was surprised. I think initially he was disappointed you know one of the things I kind of think because buffalo does get put on a lot of these lists I think one of the reasons that they weren't there is because. I don't think Eric's stall considered. The Buffalo would be a team that would be interested in him because rely heard. Yeah. The reason I would pause on that is isn't there a sort of feeling out there in the community that buffalo is looking for a second line center behind Jack Eichel. This may be a reflection on casey middle stat, that's the position they. Intended for him and his development is not there. That's probably for another conversation but I mean we were hearing No. Well, if Sean Hans going to be available this, he end up there like any player who could be a potential second line center that name was married to Buffalo Yeah Jeff I'm not going to argue with any of that but I think if you take a look at the kinds of teams that have chased after Eric Stall in the last few years, buffalo does not fit the profile. Like someone told me that there were about five teams in the last two years that tried to trade for Eric Staal. Nine Oh Boston was one and he was like, no no I. He's building a home in Minnesota I. think that's where he plans on retiring. Buffalo looking for a number to center, but would you have thought that Eric? Stall fit the profile of what buffalo was going to do I would have thought younger more term. I would look at pretty much anyone who can fill that spot until Casey Middle Stat as Buffalo Crosses, their fingers is ready. Well. That is why you're smarter than me. Another I go that far because I wouldn't have guessed and I think that that's exactly what happened here. So I think stall. Buffalo they're not GonNa want me and he doesn't put them on the list and suddenly he gets traded there. So back to Minnesota the so they get the player was twenty nine years old Markus Johannesson plays left-wing plays centre as well and. He said on the conference call that of course Dean Henderson coached him in Washington Yup and it looks like he's going to play some center there. Now the Cabral's fans on twitter in some capitals people I spoke to. They don't want to Impugn Johannesen. That's interested in ripping this guy. But they think it'll be a challenge and if you look at Minnesota down the middle right now it's Johannesen it's Ericsson ac it's bucs Tad. It's D'Amato it's Victor Rask Nikos term if they Nikos term yes. Thank you for mentioning Nikos term because I ask 'cause I was on the zoom call with the other Minnesota reporters and I said you need to get another center right? Now and you know he gave the good answer, which is you're always looking for sanders but he also said if he had to go in it with this group, he would go into it with this group and he mentioned Rask that they have to give them a chance to play and he also mentioned sturm. He liked what stern did in his brief appearance in Edmonton. So. I mean I gotta think you still looking for senators. There's no question about it, but it sounds like at the very least if he's got to do it this way, he's going to do it this way. Also on the call and I know we're putting off the dumb conversation here. But also on that call, I believe Garin talked about Alex Couch. Yes Sarah McClellan asked that question and he said that he met with ours talked to Galkina ex agent and he's not coming back. It doesn't sound like but the other thing that's interesting is that he has repeatedly declined to address Mikko Koivu I think he feels that's EMECO Koivu. Right to answer? By the way I heard stall to was disappointed because he found out of the trade from on.

buffalo Minnesota Eric Stall Bill Garin Bill Zito Florida Joel Quenneville MARKUS Johannesson matheson Yandell panthers Victor Rask Mikko Koivu Johannesen Buffalo Matheson Erect Blad Jeff Skinner Columbus

"And anyone who knows the story is sort of Giddy with the wild I can't believe the Capitals Might Get Charlton tapes here, and let's see tapes and Kohl's shake hands on the podium. After after in junior hockey, he was selected first overall and then and then didn't report it never happened. Of course, Chicago took. Nick backstrom became a Washington capital, but that was just sort of eat delicious sidebars story to that draft Okay. From Olaf Kohl's egg. To junior hockey cornerstones for a franchise try city they ended up with while they had carry price and you Jonathan tapes as well who could have beaten some NHL teams. No kidding. All right, Joe Sakic. Tell you I'm a little bit confused about this one. There's a lot of heavyweight that Kohl's one is kind of throwing me off a little bit. Okay. So Joe Sack I, mean, you know what you kind of think first of all is that For A guy who's been in the public as long as he's been, there's not a lot of great stories about him. coatless Joel Right That's what they used to call on coatless. Joe, and he loved it. Like there was one year I guess where I remember this story someone told me the story that at the beginning of the season I think it was in the move to Colorado already and they said, you're GONNA be quotas Joe Again, this year and he said depends on what you ask me. But look you know he line a huge star is a player. And now you know a chance to win a Stanley Cup, an executive and who's been really smart like really patient with jared bed. Nar. Right move really patient on trading Matt Shane even though he was like the pressure on him was intense turned out to be a great move. I think of two, thousand, two Olympics Yup Theo fleury I remember after they won the gold medal they went and they had a team party. And flurry came outside for a while because you know there's you know there was alcohol and he didn't want to be around it too much. And he talked to us about. I remember he said if you ever if you guys are writing or saying anything about this series, it has to be about how unbelievably good sack was like he's like he carried us to the gold medal. He didn't even have to say anything he just did the work and sack was a big believer in that like, I, I remember I would ask them about things like how do you approach this and how do you approach that and he's like, Hey, if you do the work and you have the right attitude, it's going to happen for you the that's all he. Would say, says, I do the work I try to have the right attitude just an unbelievably great player I know I I grew up in Toronto I know friends who are fans who still get pissed off that they didn't draft Joe sack in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seven, sack went fifteenth lease had the seventh overall pick and Gorge Celik has told the story before. That Floyd Smith Floyd Smith used to be the least GM was a longtime scout he fought for Joe. SAKIC and John Brophy wanted Luke Richardson. And brophy went crazy and brophy and Harold Ballard. The owner was really tight. And Gerry. McNamara and to be fair Gerry McNamara was the GM. The top player on their draft list was Luke Richardson. Now I'm a big believer that you don't vary your draft list and even though Floyd Smith. Put up the fight. Gerry McNamara went with the list and he took Richardson who had a pretty good career. He just wasn't Joe Sakic like who was. One of the reasons I believe you don't ever screw around with your draft list was the Joe Montana story the year he was eligible to be drafted in the NFL. He was next on the Dallas cowboys draft list when they came to pick his name was up and they changed their minds and they went with the linebacker named Larry Bethesda and that was obviously a huge mistake that was sport altering decision the cowboys making that choice instead of Joe Montana. And I think Gil Brandt was the personnel director for the cowboys at the time. But whoever was he said that that was the only time we went against our list. and. That's why you don't do it. So even though the leaves didn't go against their list and I generally think that you shouldn't go against your list they should of because Floyd Smith was. Listen happen one famous time not that long ago with the oilers right with no Yakov and Ryan, Murray? Yes. The video games the night before whatever always you know what as much as Canadian hockey fans may gross about nineteen, ninety eight and again no, and the shootout and Dominik. Hasek, and Hachem Wayne Gretzky didn't shoot. At the biggest problem with that shootout was. What's that Joe Sakic was injured? Like Joe, Sacchi is your money guy like Joe Sakic's at the dot with the Puck I love Hashtag. I think he's the best goaltender of all time as a matter of fact Joe Sakic's scores in that shootout. Going, away Joe, Sakic scores. I Love Shack but that Night Harshek one oh I know I mean they could have gone a hundred times and they might scored against them. Eric Brewer I, think we've had him before but do it again Eric. Brewer. Now, I'm really thrown. Okay. Two thousand two Olympic gold medalist. Teen. So later in his career..

"In Detroit which I think was his last one. Hartford weather representing. For five decades number nine. I remember him going into the corner at no age fifty with the elbows op and guys thirty years younger than him. Clearly being uncertain. You know what should I do here? Why do I go after a fifty year old guy or do I just deal with it and I think the answer a lot of times was be but like that night instance schedule on or he's from and Kelly Chase hosted. He hadn't played in thirty five years and the reverence for him was still incredible. You could tell you were around. A Regal Person. He is drew falls. The greatest ambidextrous hockey player. The game has ever seen well, who's better there's only one that I can I think Chris Chelios but he's not Gordie Howe Chelios says another one that could fire it from both sides but we always talk about switch hitters in baseball. The Gordie Howe come down either wing with a straight blade. Flip is thick and fire it Like that's Gordie Howe. As much as we think of the toughness and the longevity and that one game he played with the vipers that he was in his seventies. Was One game right and they played the one shift but he got it in I think of ambidextrous know one of the unique skill sets that any hockey player can have being in the having the ability shoot both left and rights hard and accurate, and that was Gordie Howe. All right. All off. It's probably not the way that. He would like to be known, but it's the temper. He had a nicknamed Godzilla for a reason. This, they make the Stanley Cup final in nineteen, Ninety, eight, they play. Detroit. and. I like asking the capital's telling me something about egg and they all laugh and they're like the Tampere. And he had a terrible temper, he would smash sticks even practice if anyone's scored on them and I know the capital's really felt that that hurt him like the goaltender you have to have a certain mentality. Yeah. You can get mad when people score on you but you have to recollect. and. Recollect and Sean Feld was the previous coach I believe before Ron Wilson. Got There and Wilson was the guy coach that Stanley Cup final. But the one thing that Sean Feld apparently, Sean fell was really blunt with them and told them like you're hurting yourself and your team by being like this. But Sean fells not the most touchy feely guys. So He Was Kinda blunt about it and Wilson wasn't always the most touchy feely guy either and but he tried to make it into a joke like apparently there was a time where Coles exited and practice and Wilson scared up to him and said, and kind of like with a laugh like you know you look like kind of like a jerk when you do that. And apparently, the players started laughing about it because they saw the coach kind of laughing about it a bit and it became more of like a running joke that anything else like when Kohl's it would start to lose it. Wilson would skate by him in practice and say mega crack about it like the jerk coming out again or something like that, and that helped get colds more comfortable with it. Like I don't think he ever lost his edge but he got better at dealing with it and then he became a hell of a goal like he was a great goalie but I always think of the temper because I have a really bad temper I think I've told the story before about how I once made a mistake in a piece at the score I got somebody's name wrong and I smashed. Drywall my apartment I used to be really like that too. So let myself Kohl's has a tie in with the autism spectrum and it's done a ton of great work. Raising awareness for it. So I'm a big fan but I when I think of them on the ice, I think of the temper. You know the story with him and Jonathan Tapes they drafted teams right so he used to own along with Damon Land Cowan it tries right Scott Gomez yet tri city Americans and so they selected first overall in the Bantam draft I thin- two, thousand and three. Think and they would try the idea was they're building that organization around two players the a draft Carey price the year before, and they're taking Jonathan toews first overall, and generally you're not taking someone first overall without some type of assurance that they are coming to your program and I don't know I've heard so many different versions of the story I don't know whether it was something a family decision pressure from Shattuck Saint Mary's crew to get them to go to North Dakota whatever it was, but Dr Dave's ends up going to North Dakota and not the tri-city. Of the Western Hockey League and we're this gets interesting because you know that's the I. Think it was the first player ever to get drafted I in the Bantam draft in the Western League in not report. where it gets interesting is the Vancouver Nhl draft and I remember you know as a junior hockey geek watching the two six traffic in Van and Washington is selecting fourth overall and Ovechkin is going to be up on stage George mcphee to make the pick and so as Olaf Kohl's Eq and so Eric Johnson Goes I. Jordan Stall go second and then there was some speculation that go Mike Take Phil Kessel or Nick backstrom third overall which would mean the Charleston tapes would fall forth to Washington..

"They blew the series against New Jersey they thought they were good enough to beat Pittsburgh in the eastern conference final and they really thought they could have a chance against Colorado I don't know if I agree. But the leaves felt that way I mean I don't have as much many men's the personal stories about a queen like Brian Burke would have George. mcphee would have by the years he was in Toronto just to be around him like. There were times that we laughed there were times that he was furious at me. There was times I was furious at him actually here's the one I remember and I won't name the player. So after Quinn left the leaves, we did a charity responser event together, I can't remember which one was. There was a player at a team party who had a little bit too much and it ended up that he got sick and he had to go to the hospital and when the player woke up Quinn was sitting there making sure that the player was okay and he was blown away at this because player thought the twin hated him. And so I ask when it is advantage, I heard this story like, why were you there like why was that important to you and he got very emotional and he said because that was one of my guys and it really resonated with the audience and. So those are the kinds of stories I remember for Quinn. I remember talking to him once in him talk about regretting nodding not taking the Boston job after his down with the maple leafs there was an offer from the Boston. bruins eight turned it down because I don't think he felt that the money was right. But later on, he said, I regret not taking that job that was told me that one we are on our way from Vancouver to white horse for hockey Dane candidate back in two thousand eleven because he was taking his Vancouver giants play the Kamloops Blazers in white horse and he was fiercely as you remember proud of that junior hockey team chosen loved being part of the always maintained. Yeah, you know what? I let the nickels and dimes kind of get in the way of something that I wanted to do. I can't remember think. Dave. Lewis they ended up going with Dave Lewis Maybe that was when they hired Claude Julien Kerley recall specifically. But. I'm with you just a delightful guy and someone that will go out there and Elliot I mean you covered the maple leafs on on a consistent basis he would go out there and hold court and take bullets just guys could shower change collect themselves. He would go out there and protect his team that way standing outside the room that to me was Pat Quinn that guy facing microphones while his players got it together in the room. That's how I always think of Pat Quinn I would agree with that one hundred percent Gordie Howe. Oh. My goodness. Heavyweights this week yes. seriously. He died there was a big event in Saskatchewan for him. Kelly Chase hosted it Kelly chased it an unbelievable job. He really did EMC it was a big event Gordie Howe came out on a private plane and we happen to take a small ride with him from the private plane. To the hotel where he was staying and it was just. So at that time, you know obviously, you know he was really battling his health and you know we couldn't have a conversation or anything like that but you can still feel the presence I. Remember it very well just you could still tell you were in the presence of somebody who had an aura he? Had IT. Whatever it is before the maple leafs played the red wings at the outdoor game at Joe Louis. We're still working at CBC at the time we went and we did video of the how family Christmas dinner that they invited us to and let us film a little bit of it and he shook my hand and he's still had that grip right? You know it was one of those things like when I was younger, I was told I had a dry rag handshake. And it was something that I had really tried to improve having a firm handshake. When I was in grade three, we had a graduation ceremony and you have to do a run through of it and the headmaster of our school was so angry after are run through he called one student back up and said, can you come back up here and shake my hand? And he did and yelled at US she goes. This is the only student who gave me a real handshake. The rest of you gave me dryer a those are not acceptable and I remember when Gordy Howe shook my hand at that dinner that was not a dry rag like that's the way a handshake should be he grabbed on and he looked you in the eye and there was I'm too young to really remember him playing I. Remember the ovation for him at the All Star game.

"In the second quarter the wizards lead the Celtics by ten ruins off tonight they'll be taking on the predators tomorrow night and we're just in the Nashville has fired coach Peter Laviolette after he coached the predators into the playoffs in each of the previous five seasons there Maria night side coming up I'm don Huff WBZ Boston's news radio well we took action last night to stop a war we did not take action to start a war I've never seen us closer to your home on my lifetime I think what the president is doing is reckless but with the president says when you talk about a US drone strike that assassinates military general of a sovereign nation if you put that around and talk to another the nation through a military strike took out one of our top I think that this is going to wind up clogging American military personnel more with two American civilians this is not a moment when a president escalating tensions and asking for the job of president keep a safe and that means moved back from Laura good.

"They go head coach Peter Laviolette downstairs after the six one victory over Anaheim and it it was you know we talked about this a little bit with grandma and it's nice to get out that lead you know this as a player get out though to the lead in and kind of dictate the pace the rest away you know they're going to push back but they were in control tonight yeah that they did not a lot of things well and so when you're doing a lot of things while some of the mistakes get covered up you know and they had it at the break down there was a perfect date they did some things you know they they made they made their errors but when you're when your power play scores your penalty kill scores you kill power plays you block shots the you know they just did the year you get timely saves you have that compete you win battles you know a eventually you know the heart yardstick area for doing enough things right no one's ever played a perfect game but you you know you put enough good things together and and all those facets of the game and you get a win in sometimes the view sometimes it'll get rewarded for all those things at the tonight they did two point they did roblox seventeen shots tonight very active in that category is D. don't forget hash tag ask how well yeah hashtag ask cal we will do that on the other side will also head down to the predators locker room as they beat the ducks.

"To come out and be a much different team in this game nashville predators frail in a playoff series for the first time during li's family cup playoff their coach peter laviolette said we hate the result but we don't want hate the way we played in one and they've been such a resilient team during the stanley cup playoffs following a loss but predators are four all they will not exactly one goal at each of those four games following losses and they have not dropped backtoback gauge and again the lack of experience flying in stanley cup final only mike fischer had played in the stanley cup final in his career and was ten ten seasons ago i i think you have to be really impressed with the way nashville came out it wasn't really surprising when they fell behind three nothing that rate that they were able to come back and tie the game and it seemed at that point that they had the momentum this is a very resilient team that has an awful lot of faith in each other they have a lot of belief in their ability to win they talked yesterday about the fact they still need to do some things better and i think they even though they only gave up twelve shots i think they have to make sure that they take away the higher quality chances that pittsburgh gets because as we saw engage number one they don't need many chances to score it came true fairly cup final here and french perk right now we welcome in steve colts speed with four of our pregame festivities steve kenny thanks very much the sea of yellow here in pittsburgh next on the pregame show we go one on one out chat with the penguins nick benito and ringside reporter referral talks the nashville austin watch it in conjunction with nbc sports you're listening to the stanley cup final on westwood one his eyes started between the blue wire and then the red wire back to the blue back to the red beat of swift drop from his brow to his hand which grassed a pair of pliers he took a deep breath steadied himself and cut both with one swift squeeze of his tool the boy screamed as the doctor pride.
