"The world has a more positive view of the U. S. The Pew Research Center study says the U. They did think Trump was dangerous. They don't say that about Biden pews, Richard Weich says respondents still think the U. "Keep. That team in mind will be speaking about them in the very near future here on your list. We get to them at number nine. The colts and i kind of compare this to the rams with the whole quarterback switch of those. Qb's when one and two with golf and wentz a few years ago but with the rams we just talked about it six peter it feels like you clearly think that stafford will make them a better team and with indianapolis. They were eleven and five last year at nine this year. that's good but going for philip rivers to carson wentz kinda keeps them at the same level i mean i can't i don't really have a great feel right now for how carson wentz is gonna play. I think he will be at least as good as philip rivers now remember. Philip rivers had some stumbles in the first six weeks of last season. He played very well down the stretch but he wasn't great the whole year. I don't really know about whence I know that the head coach loves them support. Some it is very happy to have him. Frank reich in some ways is steak indianapolis coaching tenure. On carson wentz. And he knows it. He's happy to do it and i would have done the exact same thing if i were him. Because you're alternative jacoby said and you know who trying to trade up in the first round to get one of these quarterbacks so that to me it's pretty clear right now that the colts are going to go as far as carson wentz will take. I did that lie. Peter when i said the chargers. We're going to show up here. Real soon. A team with justin herbert leading the way. I think i would say it's an exciting team with a lot of potential. You take it a step further. Been final team here in your top ten. See the reason that in my opinion the chargers are really close. A is not only because they have just in her. I think they have radically improved. A fairly weak offensive line with russia on slater corey. Lynn's league going to be center. Now in matt feiler underrated guy coming over from the steelers to me. I think that's three valuable pieces to their offensive front and now we're going to see. Can the chargers basically become saints west. Joe lombardi's the new offensive coordinator comes over from the saints He has full total control of that offensive scheme You know brandon staley. The new head coach is given him the reins and to me. I really like the fact that they are going to try to play saints football because once you master this offense. There are so many solutions for quarterback. I think just in herbert's gonna love it. And and he's also got chased the daniel who was a backup to drew brees for four years. You know has the voice in his ear so a really like jerkers when we found out that the chargers fired anthony. Landon your mind. Went to destin. Herbert thought of boy. What would be best case scenario for his future to bring in somebody like joe lombardi with all those years learning under sean payton playcaller learning with from drew brees and being in the backup. Like you mentioned chase daniel. This is about best case scenario for just an urban forward. I really like it. And i think he's gonna be great again. And it's so funny the you know ten is chargers. Eleven is miami. Miami's the team passed on the quarterback. That number ten has and now miami at eleven is depending on to toggle belowa. The guy who they picked it five just ahead of just in herber and look. No excuses for two with is here and again. It's a different time. A different era in football. This is only tonga below a second year in the nfl. But it's almost like paul. You know for a quarterback a guy who entered the year playing a lot in year one. The second year for a quarterback today in the nfl has almost become like what three used to be. And it you know so to me. I'm not sure that the that miami is going to get rid of two if he has c. minus season..

"Have a couple more than fifty to go outside of that first name so washington nineteen not not as sexy pick but one that certainly fills a need our christian derozan tackle virginia tech look the next two picks nineteen washington chicago at twenty. Both of these picks. There's just something way in the back of my mind. I don't think it'll happen. I think it is a less than ten percent chance. But i do. I want to see what happens in the first round thursday night to see if either one of these teams desperate for a long term quarterback. Either one would. They mortgage their long-term future to move up to get a quarterback. I don't see it happening. Martin mayhew the new. Gm in washington loves draft picks. He i'm not saying. He hoards them but he's a big draft pick guy and i just don't see with the tenuous hold that ryan pace and matt nagy have on their jobs in chicago. It's hard for me to imagine. Them basically pillaging their next two drafts. After this one with the guys who make the pick at a as you know with a quarterback might not be around to to run the team and coach the team anymore. So darah saw is is interesting. Because he's a fighter he's a he's a real fiery tough kid who's basically come from. Nothing is a football player. He had one division one offer otherwise he might might have ended up at a central connecticut or something. And so i think you know he's a guy who the desire of the feisty nist competitiveness is there i think he's a ron rivera type of player. You mentioned the bears at twenty process also with not trading up to get a quarterback it took care of that stop released temporarily in the offseason whenever they got out when they signed andy dalton in if andy dalton is going to be more successful peter in that passing offense mitchell trubisky was of course they need to be better but the word that comes to my mind they need to be more explosive at the wide receiver position. So why did you think rishaad. Bateman at minnesota was the best guy there yet. I mean rashad is not the fastest guy in this draft at all but they seem to soured on anthony miller. I think the chicago tribune reported that. He's on the trading block. And and so. I look at i look at this receiver group and and again. I don't watch all the games. But when i watched rashad bateman man. He looks like he's been a receiver since he came out of the womb. He is so smooth so comfortable. Any just seemed so smart. And i view him especially. With andy dalton. I view him becoming like the master of the back shoulder fade. I just think he's. I think he is wise beyond his years at the receiver position. And i think. I think chicago wants to give this offense of real chance to be the kind of explosive offense that matt nagy has been trying to build at twenty one or i traded report. You have cleveland trading at twenty six with indianapolis with the browns moving up to get the versatile hybrid linebacker jeremiah. Carmel notre debt. You know loose car. How is an interesting case. Study because more and more. You're seeing the sideline to sideline linebackers in the nfl being valued. I don't think the browns have a really good long-term one there. The great thing about the cleveland browns. Right now is they don't have to do anything right now. They've got a really good base of talent and they're going to be competitive now for the next few years. Now you have to add two spots the that you look at the way. Football is being played now and you try to match that look suker mall is the is the first guy. I think i'm right in saying this. And you know notre game better than i do. But he's the first guy brian. Kelly recruited strictly as a rover linebacker. Whatever you'd call that a strong safety linebacker very versatile guy and and so. I think that is the kind of versatility that i think. Cleveland would crave. And i think the reason i had them trading up is that just. I doubt that he would be there at number. Twenty six might be. But i think he really fits cleveland. Well think what stood out to me watching him play every game. The last couple of years there notre dame not only does he end the ant lettuces to go silent the sideline adelaide debit whites as they cover it side and ordinance on receiver if he had to love contacts so not just the potential and the physical gifts but this guy loves to come up and hit and whoever gets him will really like that twenty two. The ravens are quitting. Pay edge rusher outta michigan too. Many peter he's the best edge rusher of class. I i love the.

"A june to date on that so that they can split his cap responsibility between this year and next year but whether they trade julio jones or not and i think they probably will but whether they trade. Julio jones or not i think the key question here at number four is a simple one. You've got to great options as receivers tight end generational tight end and then probably the best receiver you know that. Most people think is the best receiver is jomar chase. And i think if your the atlanta falcons the one thing that you have to think about also is. We don't think we're ever going to be in position to draft a really really good quarterback. I just i just don't think that they believe right now and i could be wrong but the sense i get is that they're going to hang around. Hang onto matt ryan for awhile. And and so if matt ryan with arthur smith plays great this year and i think he's gonna play really well if he plays great. Then you're looking at so. We drafted justin fields. Or or or trey lance and i mean. Is this going to be a garoppolo situation. What if matt ryan plays great next year to. What are we going to do with our quarterback you know. Take out a guy who's borderline. Mvp caliber for a young kid. Who's unproven so that is what is really difficult about the situation. They're in and quite honestly. That's why i gave him kyle pets. I support that logic to peter because even if you can imagine a a one on one meeting between the new head coach and general manager. Arthur smith sarah. Now if it came up what are the assets we have. Let's name three assets we have. They can keep us here for two years because really let's face it. You're not really guaranteed more than a couple of years right now with patients or lack thereof were head coach. Gm matt ryan asked to be one of the top two asset. You have on that team so giving him a pick that helps him be better. That helps this. Gm head coach combo be around longer than two years. I think that's the best way to go. I mean and again who knows. It's like with so many of these picks all you're doing is you're trying to read the tea leaves. Let's go to number five and i'll tell you might tea leave reading on the bengals. Paul is that. I think they vary very well. Might take peninsule right here to project. Joe burrow they got visions in their head. Now of of joe burrow going down with that knee injury and how horrible that was. But and this is a big bud. I think the one thing that that scouts. Gm's feel strongly about is. You can get a good tackle in the second round and you can get a very good guard hot early in the third round. That's what i think. The bengals should do give that. Give joe burrow one more weapon in his old fringe mar chase and then go heavy on the offensive line right after that look. There's really no other way for me to say it. You're missing out if you're not playing.

Who Will Pick Kyle Pitts in Thursday's NFL Draft?

"All right. Let's have fun here with. Kyle pits blank will select kyle pits right. I think it's the falcons. I mean friscos. Been talking about this for some time. He doesn't think that the falcons are gonna take a quarterback he thinks arthur blank is all in on on matt ryan for another year to have a new coach and the new general manager. And here's the thing like if you trade down four. And i suspect it'll be teams interested in trading up to four to get whether it's trae lance macaroni justin fields. If you're the falcons if you move down if you move down you're not getting cockpits. That's just the end the conversation because either the bengals. The dolphins entertainment five or six and presumably. You're not trading with those teams already have quarterbacks. So that's the math you're doing and if you're not getting likely to march as we saw a report on monday for peter king that maybe julio jones could be moved with which seems crazy what they need a cap space Could you turn down for. Cornerback if the falcons you could but again what gives you more value in terms of making that football team better. I think it's how pet. So if i'm the falcons and i'm not taking justin feels matteo's trae lands i'm sampling. Taking cup pits. Janssen the blank blank. We'll take pets. I think it's it's atlanta. But i also be surprised if the team traded up with the falcons maybe even take pits like ryan saying you know the train up to the quarterback but you know teams fall in love your dallas. You know thousand the four but you know if a team really loves him that much and it's hard not to love that much than you could see. Maybe a team being overly aggressive. I think it was on On the nfl network this morning on good morning football there was a segment that they do with the giants traded up. You know. I don't know who is doing the job. Esau just a screen grab of it on twitter but the giants gave their first or second ebony ingram and something else to move up to four to get pits and it was you know something that on paper make some sense but you know. Obviously something is not likely to happen but still i would say it's four is where he goes. But the falcons do make some sense especially they decided we want from me jonesing. Another playmaker

Just wondering your reaction to that does that. We win deserve to win tonight. So yeah pretty much. So and i started look at cam. Newton's numbers. He is had almost five hundred throws over those seventeen games. Peter king points out in his column today. Aaron rodgers has had four hundred seventy seven pass attempts through the same time period. He's thrown forty touchdowns cams thrown five. And i know coming back from arthroscopic surgery on his rotator cuff and for those of us who've had rotator cuff surgery just coming back for a normal life. NFL Playoff Futures: Who will make the 2020 post-season?

"Wanted to talk about playoff odds and not not. Just who's gonna make the playoffs but also the nfc the nfc's a really weird place. The saints are plus three fifty to win this to in the nfc. None of us like the saints even are as good as they looked last week against tampa. There's still this unease with because breezes arm strength. It just makes me nervous. I'm starting to talk myself into the saints. Okay yeah okay so a couple of things number one. Smart people in july and august said wait until brady gets half a season under his belt and they're going to get better you know. No one cares. More about the details. And tom brady doesn't have a training. Camp does not as doesn't put pads on till till august fifteenth. He's gonna get better and better and better and so week one when when the bucks and the saints played. I threw that out. I said this this doesn't matter bracing to get better and better better. This was the closing the gap game for me. And then i didn't see that and obviously they were there whipped everywhere you know. Ali maher pet being out was a big thing with with with with people who started the game. But i think that this was bigger than than alley marquette quite frankly okay The the saints were able to get a four man rush the entire game. Are they able to pressure brady on half of his dropbacks when they had a four man rush. That's really good Since marcus davenport's come back in week five had the most pressures in football pressuring and football There's just something there. The problem at the beginning of the year was that lattimore and marcus williams were bad and those are two pretty good players and i think that you know a good pass rush. Ken console that those guys can get better and so with with brees. Listen there are. There are problems with the fact. You can't throw down the field. The offensive line is not as good as it has been in years hospice and matter with brees because he gets rid of the ball and a second. It's like peyton manning he doesn't need you know the the the best offensive line in the world and then lattimore who we were kind of dunking on because at one point he was giving almost a perfect passer rating. He owns mike evans. He own them. He is not given up a reception. Mike evans the last three games. They've played and so when if those guys play in the playoffs again. There's that match up. So i i don't. I'm feeling better about the saints. Now that i was two three weeks ago. Good coaching staff. I gary coaching staff. Yeah so the fear in this isn't just the saints but the fear is all right. What happens at their downtown in a playoff game. It's basically the lamar jackson corollary. How am i feeling down. Thirteen to three in the second quarter and they've just done a three and out. What were my emotions in that moment. That's my the saints because a breeze. I think that because they don't you don't think they're capable of a big play. Is that your fear if teams though like all right. They've got to air this out. They've got to quicken the pace and also it's amazing to me a cameras probably been the. Mvp think it's either him cook mahomes berry some order Okay i'm amazed at teams aren't just like all right. We're taking him out like bell. Check in his prime your. He got added as kids to the coaching staff and decided to throw a fight street. Drafts fail check All he would do me like chimeras not beating me. You can have everyone else on the saints. I'm not getting beat by that guy. I'm falling everywhere he goes. We're hitting him constantly. He's not beating me. Why don't teams do that with them. I don't get it okay. So first of all they have a of weapons. Thanks so she when michael. Thomas is healthy There's a lot they can do their you know. I think peter king early breakdown. His column this week about there was a play where the bucks dropped eight men into coverage and it was a weird play. They had their fullbacks put out wide and brees hit a random tight end. Adam traveling for a touchdown even throwing into eight men like that. There's just something their breezes still really really good so. I think it's a bit simplistic to say. Just take away kamara because they can do other stuff And they can. They can change their game plan so

"So back on the Peter King podcast. Now, we take into the second half of the Super Bowl. And obviously at halftime New England leads three to nothing. There's a collective shock in the press box. I can tell you talking to some of my friends in the business, and and we're all sort of saying men what what's going to happen in the second half. I mean, it's totally unrealistic think that this is going to keep going the way it is. But I think what was very interesting that happened at in the middle parts of this game. Is that it simply reinforced a lot of people say, well, they'll make some changes at halftime. And and obviously, you know, the coach of the Los Angeles Rams, Sean McVay as young wonder kind and. And I think a lot of people at halftime thought. Well, we'll see what what happens in the third quarter. But the fact is. The Rams and patriots. Didn't do a lot different. In fact, as I write in my football morning in America column today at NBC sports dot com. One of the big things that happened in this game was that in the fourth quarter, midway through the fourth quarter after the patriots had ten drives in this game and scored three points total. It was a three to three game. And. I just sort of was looking at this game. Have you ever seen a game? A baseball game that you think boy, I better watch every pitch of this game. Because there could be a solo home run in the fourth inning that decides this these teams are so close. So that's sort of what I was thinking that, you know, it's a classic pitcher's duel in baseball, and that's what we were watching here. But I'll tell you what I really think turn the tide and. You know, you'll you'll get a kick out of this early this morning. So as I record this Monday morning, it's about three forty AM. I'm sitting in my hotel room in Atlanta. And as I'm recording this, I I've just come back in the last hour or so from the patriots team hotel, and one of the things that I did while at the patriots team tells try to find out a why they were so frustrated against the Rams defense and be and I think this is this is a really important part of it think about this. Why in the world the New England Patriots were able to sort of flip a switch and score ten points onto drives in the fourth quarter. After being basically shut out for the first three plus quarters of this game. And. At the patriots team.

"And I my little snippet of a conversation with a rookie all pro safety of Los Angeles chargers after their great win in Baltimore on Sunday Derwin, James. Back in the Peter King podcasts Derwin James the all pro safety with the Los Angeles chargers before we talk about this game. You just played always your reaction when you heard that. You're all pro as a rookie in the NFL. I was excited on just coming in. I said all the way back to the combine that I wanted to come in and Ernest position and be all pro and make the probe. Also that was one of my goals coming in and like I say just for us to continue to win. And just do what we need to do. Why was this game this year for you? Not that big a transition. It seemed from the very start you played big in big games preparation everyday. My daily habits that I do every day, and my coaches doing a great job prepare me. I mean, I got great teammates. And like I said we challenge each other everyday in this spec. My best out of me every day, and I've been bringing that every day, and it just transitioned to on Sunday or standing in the bowels of Mt. Bank stadium in Baltimore. You guys just gone on the road for the eighth time this year and one football game. You've been to London you've been to Baltimore you've been to Kansas City. You've been all over the map and you've won games. You've won eight football games on the road. Why have you guys been such a good routine this year with raw moments like this coming into other people housing like I say plan char football for four quarters. I mean, we we feel like we always Dylan as a team more and more on those playing rather than just getting over here. Just own a road in the hotels on the road. We love it. We love it. We love we love it love it. I mean is absolutely fun. Why why is that? Asleep in God that we have in a locker room, honestly. 'cause it's fun to be around guys. Like this twenty four seven. I love football coaches that love football twenty four seven. So I feel like it's going on the room. Okay. So the first time you play these guys two weeks ago, they ran for one hundred and fifty nine yards. They pass for two hundred two yards. I don't know the stats in this game because they were inflated because what happened late but through three quarters. You've just totally snuffed them out. What was the Gus Bradley game plan this week? And what was the idea coming in? I do we will put on we got seventy Bs. Unfortunately, we had put seventy Bs on 'cause battling injuries. But I feel like we did a great job of just you know, again speed on the field and just get into the ball. And containing and line did a great job all day of you know, again to the quarterback and not carrying too many rushland foster not not for too many states to get the ball. So overall team the first snap of the game. You. Were there waiting for Lamar Jackson. And it was almost like you. You you were spying just to make sure we're not gonna let Lamar Jackson outside. We're not gonna let him beat us. Yeah. I snap of the game. How did that feel the you? And what did you see that it took off from there like the momentum of defense when they seen that we make that? I when I make the first play I feel like from narrow it was would just win to click an clicking come another place. So like I say everybody star making big plays. And we start getting big sacks interceptions. And like I say offense the ball. So I feel I. We've got a great thing going around here. What do you think Gus Bradley's mantra was this week when he would talk to you guys about the important things in this football, just being able to read your keys, he knew that was gonna be small, you know, coming in with with a DB's, but we we thrive on on being physical..

"Yeah. Welcome to the Peter King podcast. Right. Try to tell you something about football. Maybe just a tiny bit about life. This week all football. We're gonna start with Derwin James, the all pro rookie safety of the Los Angeles. Chargers. We had a short conversation after the chargers beat the Baltimore Ravens in the wildcard game to advance to their big game. The divisional playoff game at New England on Sunday in Foxborough. Then we're going to be joined by Didi king Kabbalah of NFL network. She's done some very good reporting on the dysfunction inside the Pittsburgh Steelers. You're really gonna wanna hear this. She is all over what's going on inside the Steelers. And then finally one of my favorite new media people in the NFL, Dan Orlovsky, a an eleven year NFL backup quarterback, and I was more. Most interested to talk to him about foles magic. And so we had a very good conversation about what is making Nick foles tick and win with the Philadelphia Eagles. But first, let's take a ride on the coaching carousel. We've obviously gotten we had we had eight jobs coming into the off-season. And now we're one week into it. And there was a flurry of activity early this week. I'm recording this on Tuesday night about nine PM eastern in New York City. And so what we have so far is we've got the Green Bay Packers taking Tennessee ofensive coordinator, Matt leflore to be the new mentor for Aaron.

"Back on the Peter King podcast really happy to be joined by Chris Spielman. Why think is one of the most interesting people I have ever covered in thirty four years of the NFL. He was so intense that one time I wanted to do a story of his life in football and see what he really went through to prepare for a game when I worked at Sports Illustrated, and Chris who was at the time. A hugely intense linebacker for the Detroit Lions when I proposed this idea to him to sort of hang around with him as he prepared for a game. He looked up at me. And he goes, I don't remember if it was through gritted teeth, but I think he was a little bit. I don't know a put off by the question. He said my life is not the frigging NFL today. I got a great kick out of that. And I always respect the passion of guys, and I've always really really respected the passion of Chris Spielman. So Chris thank you so much for joining me. I'm gonna jump right into this. And just ask you your now, a talk show host in Ohio. You you grew up in northeast, Ohio. You grew up basically in the shadow of the pro football hall of fame. Now, you do NFL games for FOX. So you're round the game. And I wanna know this. Why did Hugh Jackson fail? I think they're couple reasons you can't one is not that he didn't have the opportunity in years to fix it. But if I sit back and look at it, there's a lack of stability within the organization. Alexa stability in front office. There was constant changes. And you take a look at Hugh Jackson and. What they were trying to do when you're not working hand in hand with the front office in there's constant stress and pressure. It's never going to work. I think the other thing is the obvious answer. Is there was never stability at the quarterback position. I do believe now that they have that stability with Baker Mayfield. But didn't Hugh Jackson know what he was getting into. Yeah. But my point is they weren't getting along. Whether they went whether it was everybody was Coon by yacht. I an all in. But as as the process went on they started infighting and pointing fingers at each other. So what organization when you have everybody pointing fingers at each other on the inside is ever going to be successful. It's not they're not on the same page in..

"Welcome to the Peter King podcast right breakdown, almost everything about football and other things in life as well. We've got a very different podcast today. This is after week, one of the NFL season entering a very, very interesting, New England, Jacksonville, Cleveland, New Orleans, Philly. The explosive bucks. There's a lot of interesting games, but I'm sorry, we're not gonna talk about any of that today. We are going to talk about the future of gambling in the NFL with my good friend, Chad millman who is the chief content officer of the action network where honestly, I don't really know what it is, but I am actually look it up when I leave here today. But Chad is going to explain everything that you need to know about the NFL's future with gambling. And also he's going to ridicule me, I think because I have no clue what all of these weird terms in gambling mean. And also we're going to be joined by Bart star junior of Birmingham, Alabama son, obviously, Bart Starr the first real Super Bowl hero in NFL history. The first two MVP's of Super Bowls in NFL history Bart Starr the Green Bay Packers. A couple of weeks ago I went down and spend a day with their family and met bar for story that I did for NBC's football night in America. Show this past Sunday, really hope you got to see it. It's about the relationship between Aaron Rodgers and Bart star, even though they're separated by fifty years stars eighty four star seniors. Eighty four, Aaron Rodgers, thirty four. They really have a lot in common and they have a very, very good relationship. So anyway, I'm gonna talk to Bart junior about that relationship. And what I'm going to do. The reason I did this and and and you have to pardon me because my recording equipment that I use, I basically use my iphone and so my recording equipment is not good because I didn't anticipate that I was going to record him for my podcast. So I I apologize in advance for a recording, sound quality. That isn't very good, but I really, really enjoyed the conversation with Bart Starr junior talking about growing up in Green Bay talking about having Bart star for a dad talking about his dad today, Bart Starr senior suffered a debilitating stroke of four years ago. He's got a disease called the Faiza which makes speaking and understanding and actually doing anything with the English language, a real chore. It's the disease that afflicts Paul Zimmerman my former comrade at sl. And Paul has a lot worse than bar does. But, but anyway, I just really loved the conversation that I had with Bart junior. And so I wanted you to hear that. And I hope I'm not boring you by giving you a gambling expert and the son of the greatest player in football fifty years ago. But I just wanted to do something a little bit different this week because I'm fascinated not only by the future of gambling in the NFL, but also I'm fascinated by Bart Starr's life and Bart Starr junior's life. So before we get too far into our podcast, let's go to our first conversation. Chad millman chief content officer of the action network, and he's going to talk about how cool it is that he has a job where he can talk about things like the Vig and the spread and the over under. Every day of his life. Back on the Peter King podcast. I'm happy to be joined today this week to tell me about things that I have absolutely no idea about. It's about gambling. I truly don't know because I think it's foolish to bet on the NFL. Because I just think it's impossible. But anyway, we have the chief content officer for the action network says, name's Chad millman. Chad is the former. Editor of ESPN the magazine. He did that for five years and he was the editorial director VP and digital for a couple years. And then he got hired to basically run the action network, which is a sort of a content place to learn everything you need to know about gambling and sports and sports betting. So anyway, Chad, thank you for coming in. You left out the most important part of my resume..

"Basically? Well, it was a lucky break after the game with me, and I said that was not look. You've practiced that probably a hundred times a day since you were a kid. I've read about him. He's an Australian rules football kid, and he just loves kicking the football. So he's going to be very interesting to watch. I don't know whether that qualifies as offense of her defensive rookie of the year, but he's going to be one of those Seahawks by the way I think are going to be really good. Everybody says, well, they got all these questions about them. I think they're going to be really good. Lastly, this has nothing to do with the NFL nothing, but I met Mark Maguire on this trip. He's the bench coach for the San Diego Padres. I went down one day Bill Johnston, the former PR guy, the San Diego Chargers did not go with them when the chargers moved from San Diego to Los Angeles. So now the Los Angeles chargers have new PR staff, mostly new and Bill Johnston is. Is the San Diego Padres. I think he's director of corporate communications, but he's got a PR job with the Padres. And so he invited me down. I went down with Don a pseudo and his son Dom is the editor of my column football morning in America. And we went down and we got a tour of the clubhouse and everything spent some time with the general manager AJ prelature and had a good time also got to meet. We were there. They were playing the Diamondbacks Tori level low, the Diamondbacks manager, and I had a good conversation. I got to meet Nick Ahmed of the shortstop for the Diamondbacks who I don't even. I don't know if he knew this or whatever. But when I was in high school in Connecticut, Nicomedes mom was a good friend of mine Janus Arado. So I got to meet Nick, watch him play, and. God, he's sixteen Jackson's year pretty good anyway. So mitt, Mark Maguire. He was just sitting alone watching some tape. In some side room in near where the Padres club houses and normally in a situation like that, what you wanna do is basically, hey, good to meet you. You know, pleasantries all that stuff, but we actually talk for a few minutes and at the end of it, I just said to him, you know, I really admire how you handled what must have been hellish situation for you and how you've come out on the other side and you seem to have rebuilt your life and you're just a regular guy in baseball. I said, I just think that's very cool. I don't know if people notice that or whatever, but I Meyer the way you came out of it and he goes, thank you. He said, I love the game. I love baseball. It's just a cute moment of that. Sometimes you, you're on a training camp trip tour and unexpected things happen, and it's just kind of fun. But anyway, those are a few thoughts I have about training camp. I'm not sure whether this works, whether you'd rather hear me talk to somebody, but I just thought it would be fun to you. You know to basically do something a little bit different on the podcast this week, and I appreciate you bearing with me and listening while I ramble a little bit about NFL training camps. "Back on the Peter King podcast in this, of course, is Peter King, and I'm going to finish up now with a few thoughts, non quarterback thoughts on my training camp trip to or thirty six days across the United States. And as I said, leading off the podcast really thought that I wanted to sort of empty my mental note book about what I saw out there and really some of the opinions I have after seeing a bunch of these teams. So I went to me Jon Gruden the new coach of the Oakland Raiders the old in new coach of the Oakland Raiders seventeen years between coaching jobs with Gruden in Oakland. I think I'm writing saying he left when he was thirty eight and now he's fifty five and I went there to see if there is any dimension of verve spirit, whatever. And although I found him when I watch. Him practice to be not the yeller screamer owner of every minute of practice that I remember of Jon Gruden. I still found that he really really loves what he's doing and he's inventing these new drills that I've never seen before. I wrote about this in my football morning in America column at NBC sports dot com. I wrote about how he practice. He has a one session that might be about fifteen to eighteen minutes long where the quarterbacks practice without laces on the football and you say, what in the world is that? But he found when he watched football during his absence during his nine years away from the game, he found that when he watched the game, he would see quarterbacks taking shotgun snaps and getting heavily rushed and not having the time to find the laces to throw the ball properly said like Ben Rothlisberger does this all the time Derek card did it too when you get a shotgun. Snap, and you can't put your fingers on the laces. You basically have to hurry up and throw it in whatever shape you get the ball in. I don't mean shape, but I mean, if you don't have the ability to use the laces, you gotta throw the ball anyway. So it was really, really interesting talking to him about a lot of things. But one thing I found myself thinking we talked about this. I want you to think about this for second that Jon Gruden when he was a coach in Tampa Bay gave Kyle Shanahan his first coaching job in the NFL. Kyle Shanahan was twenty four years old came in as an offensive, quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, Kyle Shanahan obviously is the coach of the San Francisco forty Niners a very good young quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, and they will meet this year in midseason the Oakland Raiders at the San Francisco forty Niners. He gave another guy his first job in the NFL. EV young kid in two thousand seven. His first job in the NFL also is an offensive. Quality control coach, a wide receiver from Miami of Ohio named Sean McVay and Sean McVay came down to Tampa and basically did a lot of the stuff that Kyle Shanahan had done. I think three years earlier and and Now Sean McVeigh is the new wonder kind coach in the NFL brought. The Rams in his rookie year is coach from thirty second in the NFL and offense in two thousand sixteen to I in the NFL in offense in two thousand seventeen and now first game of the season, it's going to be Sean McVeigh at Jon Gruden Monday night football, the captured a week, one of the season, and I just find it. So ironic that Jon Gruden who was the master, who was the teacher who brought in these. Wet behind the ears kids. These guys just getting their starting coaching, Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVeigh, and now Kyle Shanahan Sean McVay probably two of the five hot coaches in football right now, maybe to the three or four, but very popular around the NFL very well respected early on in their careers. And now it's Jon Gruden is going to have to try to catch up to the kids that he helped train to get in this position. Just a fascinating story in my opinion for other quick points. Number one, the Browns really have a good defense. I love Djibril peppers. He's not getting a lot of attention yet, but I think Djibril Djibril peppers in the secondary and sort of being a monster Rover back at linebacker in the secondary is really going to be dangerous for people to account for and Myles Garrett..

"Welcome to the Peter King podcast where I talked to a lot of people around the sports, particularly in football, but not exclusively, but it's the football time of year. So football were going to talk this week. I'm gonna give you my memories. My ten best things that I saw. Traveling around the United States going to see twenty two teams over thirty six days in training camps around the United States. So we're going to do the podcast a little bit differently this week. I'm gonna do two segments myself because I thought of what I would want to do this week. And I just thought I've done so much on this training camp trip been home for a couple of days now, but I've done so much on this training camp trip. I've seen so much. I've learned so much and an awful lot of that. I haven't written in my football morning in America column at NBC sports dot com. I've just got it in the old cranium. So I just thought, here's the way we're going to do this podcast can be different than anyone I've ever done before. I'm going to do to Saguenay maybe twelve minutes a piece and in the middle of that, sandwiched by my two Saguenay is going to be a segment. I'm gonna do with Joe Horrigan the pro football hall of fame executive director and archivist, and in my opinion, after the death of Steve sable the real keeper of the flame in professional football, you just simply don't know him. So we had a meeting last week, the pro football hall of fame that I'll tell you about, and then I'm going to have a conversation with Joe Horrigan, but sandwiching that will be some thoughts. I, I'll have a section about quarterback thoughts as I went around training camps. And then I will have a section later in the podcast, all about all other thoughts, five other specific thoughts I had going around from camp to camp. Around the United States. So we're going to start off first with a few of my thoughts about quarterbacks. And you know, I'm gonna start in Baltimore. That was the first stop on the training camp trip, Owings mills, Maryland, where obviously, Joe flacco who won the Super Bowl five years ago for the for the Baltimore Colts and got handsomely rewarded twenty million dollars a year contract, and he just has not played well the last two or three years last two years because of injury. But obviously the Baltimore, Ravens drafted a quarterback in Lamar Jackson and in the first round. And they aim at some point to give the reins of this team to Lamar Jackson. And I found Joe flacco what I went to ravens camp. He's the same old joke kind of laconic and not really seemingly upset by much, but somebody who's. Been around the ravens for a long time, says Joe wants to stick it up their rear end, you know, Joe wants to show the ravens that there was no need for you to draft a quarterback, and I'm going to show you why the day I saw him. He threw six balls over forty yards, four completions, and I said to myself my gosh, this looks like the flacco who went in beat Denver in the wildcard game. I think two thousand twelve throw in the ball all over the place and outdueling Peyton Manning. So look, I don't know what's going to happen in Baltimore. I can't swear that flock is going to have a great year. But all I know is I think he is soup rim Lee motivated by the ravens, drafting a quarterback. He's healthy for the first time after two training camps being hurt. And I think Joe flacco has got a very good chance to have a redeeming year quarterbacking the Baltimore Ravens. Now. Let's go to Carson Wentz and Philadelphia. The third stop on my trip was in Philadelphia to see the first day that Carson Wentz had pads on since the day in December two thousand seventeen. When he hurt his knee, suffered a season, ending knee injury against the Rams and and that was on December nine. I think two thousand seventeen. So here we were ill basically eight and a half months later. And this was the first time he was going to put pads on and play at full speed with pads on since the day..
