A highlight from Soul Winning 101 - The 5 W's of Evangelism

"All right, hey folks, good evening. This is Daniel Karzewski coming to you live from Washington, D .C. again. Here on tonight's episode, we're gonna talk about soul winning 101, or also known as evangelism 101. And so, first of all, there's five basic questions that you have to answer, and that's the five Ws, the who, what, where, when, why. And what are we doing this for? So, number one, what is evangelism or what is soul winning? It is going out and snatching the souls out of the gates of hell, or out of the pits of hell. But furthermore, what is evangelism specifically? And it comes from the root of the Greek word angel, which also means messenger, or also known as the act of sharing the message of God's word. And that's where we get our commission and our commandment from in Matthew 28. And we're supposed to go forth and share the gospel, which means the good news with everybody, because sinners need to have their sins forgiven, and lost people need to know that they're lost, and they need to know that they can get a savior, and they know that they can get out of their wicked, wretched lives that they're living that's not taking them anywhere, especially not in eternity's sake. And then number two, why do we evangelize? Well, number one, we're commanded by God there in Matthew 28, like I just mentioned, and then also for the glory of God and the good of man, and 2 Peter 2, 9 tells us. Then where are we to go, and where are we to share it? Well, everywhere, near and far, indeed, the whole entire world, just like Acts says in chapter one, verse eight. And then, when are we supposed to do it? Anytime, anytime the Lord leads us and tells us. I think it's almost always that we've got tracks on us, and we're handing them out to everybody that we meet. We don't even know these people, but God knows them, God sees their heart, and God wants to save them. In 2 Timothy 4, verses two, that's where it tells us, anytime. And then who are we supposed to do it with, and who are we supposed to share it with? To everyone, to all, to all people in the whole entire world Mark 16, verse 15 commands us. And then, of course, there we've got some different tools in the toolbox, we've got spiritual warfare, we've got different equipment, different weaponry, and Ephesians 6 that we see putting on the whole armor of God, using prayer as a weapon, as a sword. Then we've got apologetics in 1 Peter 3 .15, be ready to answer every single man. And then we've got different techniques, we've got Jesus's example, we've got different ways to relate and create and convict and reveal to people. Then we've got one -on -one situations, we've got tracks, we've got door -to -door, we have different events and signs, public proclamation that goes out, we've got people that go out and play music and dramas and do skits on the street, in churches, whatever the case may be, there's all different types of ways to do it. And then, what's the biblical method of the gospel presentation? Well, I mean, it's just like, what would Jesus do? Ray Comfort has a great ministry called the Way of the Master, and he goes out every single Saturday, matter of fact, I've been out there with him on occasion and seen him and got to pray with him and got to watch him, and it's really just such a blessing to be able to see that man's ministry the way that he does it, and that's the same way that we're trying to do it. And if you're looking for a good example of a way to evangelize, follow Ray Comfort's way, the Way of the Master, and it's the biblical way, and it's the law in the evangelism, because you've got to get the sinner lost, oftentimes, before they can realize their need for a savior. And that's just like John 4, verses three through 30 tells us, it tells us we need to use the law in the evangelism, as opposed to some type of life enhancement where it's Christianity and getting saved and Jesus Christ on the cross, it's some good luck charm that we wear on our necklace, and that gets us saved, that couldn't be farther from the truth, and so we need to get people out of that thinking, and we need to use the law to convict people that they are sinners and that they are in need of a savior from hell and eternal damnation and hell fire and brimstone and get them to realize that heaven is so much better. I mean, we shouldn't have to scare people into heaven, but it says, just like in Jude, verses 21 through 23, that there are some that are saved by fire and some that are saved by compassion. And God tells us unto the proud man, he's gonna receive judgment and rebuke and reproof and condemnation and judgment. He's gonna receive the word of God because he's not understanding the spiritual things. He can only understand the natural things of man. But then under the humble, he receives grace and mercy, love and kindness, forgiveness, and he's willing and ready to receive, you know? And I've seen people like that on the street before. And then who is to evangelize? Who is qualified? What are the qualifications? Ephesians chapter four, verse 11 through 12, and then we've got the examples in all of scripture, Moses, Gideon, Jeremiah, Peter, James, John, Paul, and the list could go on. We could go on all night listing every single person in the Bible who was somebody that was out there evangelizing and witnessing and using God's word as a message to reach the loss for their generation. And that's what we're called to do. We're called to reach our generation for the loss. However many years that may be, I don't wanna go another day without telling somebody about Jesus. I mean, life is a vapor, and what are you gonna do? You gonna get to 80 and, oh, well now I'm gonna start working. And matter of fact, I've seen that. I've seen a 72 -year -old woman get saved, and she said, wow, I wasted 72 years of my life, and nobody wants to be like that. I sure don't wanna be like that, you know? In the 30s, thinking about, man, okay, well, what should I do for the next 40 years? Should I just waste them and see as much gain as I can get? Well, I mean, Solomon told us that all is vanity. He was chasing after the wind his whole entire life. He strived after every pleasure he could possibly get his hands on. And he said all was vanity. And the end of the preacher is to do God's word, obey his law, be righteous, and worship God and serve man. That's the end of the law. That's the end of God's word for man, is to obey him and worship him and serve others. And that's the 10 commandments. That's the whole entire word of God summed up. It'd be Jesus said it too. He said, love God with all your heart, mind, soul, body, spirit, and love your neighbor as yourself. And if we do those things, we've done all the law and the prophets, praise the Lord. And then finally, evangelism and you. There's different styles of evangelism. Everybody can evangelize in some way, shape, or form. You don't have to talk, but I remind you that Moses and Jeremiah and many other preachers and prophets said, Lord, I can't speak, I'm a small person. I mean, David started out small too and we all start out somewhere, but there's different types of serving. You can just give somebody a bottle of water and a track, whatever the case may be. Anytime we give food to the homeless, we always give them a track with it because you never know. We don't give money unless we're given to specific charity or we're given our time or we're given to a local New Testament church that's gonna gain, gather food and we're gonna go out and serve the food ourselves. And I really don't give to a lot of big charities out there because unless I know that they're extremely reputable and they're serving the Lord Jesus Christ. I mean, I know my friend Matt, he's down in Malawi, South Africa. He's doing the Lord's work there. He takes 12 disciples every three years and disciples them and sends them out as pastors. It's a perfect biblical ministry and I love it and I love supporting him because every time I send them 50 or $100, I know that's gonna feed one of their students for a month or two on end. It's gonna be wonderful. And so there's a great need for evangelists and the urgency of evangelism in today's day and age. And so that is Soul Winning 101 wrapped up. I love y 'all, God bless. Like, comment, subscribe, send us a note. We love you all, take care and God bless. We'll see you next time.

"Versus 32 through 42. They went to a place called gethsemane, and she's a said to his disciples, sit here while I pray. He took Peter James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, he said to them, stay here and keep watch. Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him, a father, he said, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping, Simon, he said to Peter, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. Once more he went away and pray the same thing, when he came back, he again found them sleeping because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. Returning the third time he said to them, are you still sleeping and resting enough the hour has come? Look, the son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners, rise, let us go. Here comes my betrayer. This is God's word. For many years, I've thought that this is this text about the garden Yosemite is particularly helpful to New Yorkers. And what I want to do tonight is take a look at 5 things that this 5 ways this passage helps New Yorkers. And some of you are saying 5, what about three? Is it always three? And the answer is these are New Yorkers. See, and look, New Yorkers are just like everybody else. Only much, much, much, much more so. This passage helps us see it all really happened. Understand we have a culture. Come to grips with a wrath of God. Discover a way to deal with trouble and suffering and get the power to use that method. Number one, this passage actually tells us shows us that the stuff we're looking at in the gospel of Mark about the life of Jesus really happened. I know an awful lot of people, especially in New York, like to say, well, the Bible, it was written by the winners, history is written by the winners, who's to say that this every really happened. There's a lot of legendary material in the Bible. How do you know this even ever happened? Well, this passage, Jesus facing his death, is unique in ancient literature. Greeks and Romans have lots of stories of their prominent leaders and prominent individuals and figures and heroes facing death and dying. And they always were cool and dispassionate. Like Socrates, you know, he had a drink the hemlock. He was executed. And the story of his and the surrounded by his followers, but he's cool and dispassionate. He's cracking jokes almost. Speaking ironically, then you can go to the Jewish culture and Jewish literature. Go to first and second maccabees, which is roughly at this time. And you'll see that when Jews wrote accounts of their major figures and heroes and leaders facing death, they weren't cool and compassionate, like the Greeks. They were hot blooded in fearless and they praised God as they were being sliced to bits by their persecutors and nothing is like this. Nothing in ancient literature like this. Here you have Jesus. Just before he's about to die, opening his heart to his disciples, opening his heart to God, opening his heart to the readers, of course. And talk about his struggles and his agony and his fears about facing death. And then he turns to God and says, is there any way I can be left off the hook? Is there any way I could get out and get out from this mission? Now, commentators and historians have said this for years, I just want to drive at home here. If you were a leader in the early church and you were making up stories about Jesus life in order to promote your religion, you never, never. Would have made this story up. Never, it could only hurt because no matter who what your culture was, was Jewish or Greek or Roman, no matter what. No culture understood greatness and understood major leaders who are worthy of loyalty and faithfulness acting like this. The only possible reason this account is written down. The only possible explanation for this account being in the gospel of Mark is if it happened. There is no other motivation possible for including it. Unless it happened. And therefore it happened. And when we read these accounts of the end of Jesus life, don't try to slither out from under saying, well, who knows if it ever really happened? It happened. Deal with it. .1. Second thing the text tells us is not only does it help us see that it really happened. But it helps us understand we have a culture. What? Up to now Jesus has been completely in control. All of a sudden, in verse 33, he starts to fall apart. I mean, nothing seems to have surprised Jesus up to now. If you read the history, his life, he always knows what's going on. He's always nothing seems to jar him. Nothing ever seems to move him off course, but look at verse 33 and 34. Look at the words that are used. They're over the top, first of all, says he began to be deeply distressed. Now that's a word that actually means astonished. And that's astonishing. If you read the rest of the life of Jesus Christ, nothing ever seems to surprise him. He's totally unflappable. It says here. Suddenly he began to be astonished. Something he saw is something he realized something he experienced stunned the eternal son of God and sent him reeling. Shocked him, and then what could that have been? We'll get to that. Secondly, it says he was distressed. And deeply stressed and troubled. And it's where troubled means to be overcome with horror. And let's not think about this too long, this illustration, but just to give you an understanding of what he was experiencing. Horror, imagine you're walking down a street, you turn a corner, and there, in front of you, is someone you love, killed, dead, mutilated, cut to pieces.

"Direction. But again, God can use each and every one of us. We're not all going to be Peter James and John, okay? There are going to be some myself included. Are the Andrews, okay? But God still wants to use us, and he can in a great way. We can be like that Kimball, you know? Reaching out to that shoe salesman. We never know where it's going to go, you know? And it's amazing what God can and will do if we're willing to be a participant in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Let's pray. Heavenly father, I think most of us know that's our responsibility that sometimes we can come up with a long list of excuses or why we can't. We shouldn't or, you know, we're just kind of afraid or I don't have I haven't been trained or whatever. Lord we pray that you'd help us to be willing to come out of our comfort zone and reach out to other people. We're thankful for those in our own hearts and lives that reached out to us. Maybe as a young person, maybe we came to church, but it was, we didn't have too much of it going on at home, but that Sunday school teacher shared with us about the lord Jesus Christ. Maybe it was several sunny school teachers. Different people that the lord brings into our life that helped to steer us towards the lord Jesus and finally came to that moment where we recognized, yes, I'm a sinner, and I need a savior. And we trust in Christ alone for our Salvation. Great day, in our hearts and lives, as our destiny was turned from hell to heaven. Larvae pray that others might be able to rejoice in that same event in their lives because we were faithful in inviting them to come to Jesus. We pray that you give us courage, help us to stand up and speak up. We can talk to them about a lot of other things, help us to not forget the most important decision that people will ever make. We ask us now in Jesus name, amen. Like for us to sing a closing him, if you would, please, 299, two

"Other accounts, his name is Levi, and some have suggested that is that a tribal designation, right? Is this Matthew of the tribe of Levi as a Matthew the levite? Because there were more levites than were needed to work in the temple, did some of them have to go and have other jobs. And in this case, Matthew becomes a publican. Speaking of public and oftentimes, we say, you know, a publican is a tax collector. Doctors Richard holds off and Tom weyman added a really interesting insight into this. They wrote Levi was a publican, a toll and tax collector, a member of Herod antipas royal bureaucracy. There had always been ill feelings between peasants, common laborers, including fishermen, keep that in mind, and members of the bureaucracy, especially those individuals sent to bully and in some cases illegally sees goods and coins as part of their efforts to collect revenue to maintain antipas lifestyle to keep his government and business and to pay tribute to Rome. So sometimes we're like, yeah, they didn't like publicans because, I mean, they were like the IRS. And you know who wants the IRS giving them a call. And that may be part of it, but it was even more in some cases, his role is working for the government and charging these tolls for people bringing goods into these areas. Considering and I highlighted fishermen consider Peter James and John and now Matthew gets called the news. Yeah, are we sure about this one? Think of Matthew's anxiety. Think of how he's been treated, how he feels when he's in conversation with some of these other groups. And what I find particularly compelling is remember this verse, Matthew is painting this portrait and Matthew is lining these miracles up one after the other in Matthew 8 9 there ten miracles that we've talked about. And in the middle of all of this is this call for Matthew. What I thought is, what does that tell us? Why would Matthew choose to include this passage right in the middle of all of these miracles? Is it possible that he sees this as another miracle? This calling for him, Jesus saw me, Jesus saw past the social stigma. He saw past what I was being asked to do for the bureaucracy. He saw me, and he saw potential, and he called me. It almost feels like Matthew views this as his own personal miracle. What I think is important is look at the last phrase in verse 9, and he arose and followed him. And then jump up to verse 7, speaking of the man of palsy, and he arose, and departed.

"So that the next morning, he would choose the 12 men God wanted him to choose. And they are, as is so often been said, incredibly ordinary men. Not one scribe in the bunch, not one pharisee in the bunch, not one there from royalty, not one there from the hoi polloi. These are the main God chose and these men walking with them and teaching them and training them and correcting them and rebuking them, the development of these 12 men. 11 useful ones in one traitor, which was known from the beginning. The development of these 12 men was the strategy that God employed. Listen, so that the gospel might spread to the ends of the earth. Who would do that? God would do that. Who should do that? We should. A concentrated strategy for ministry success. A few men, very few men, sure, there were thousands around him a lot, but these men were his focus. These 12 and really the Bible makes clear you can break the 12 into four groups of three and he spent most of his time with just three of them. Peter James and John. The focused target of Jesus's ministry. Just a very few men, not the movers and shakers, as Paul would say later, right? Still that way in the church, not many wise, not many noble, not many of royal descent. Ordinary men watch with an extraordinary commitment. A complete commitment to follow Jesus. He told them, leave what you have and follow me. And they did it, they just walked away from what they had their jobs, their houses, they didn't abandon their family. That becomes clear in the gospels and later even in Paul's ministry. But the things that tie us down, the pursuits they left behind.

"Jesus with Peter James and John came down from the mountain and rejoined the disciples, they saw a large crowd round them, and subscribes arguing with them. The moment they saw him, the whole crowd were struck with amazement and ran to greet him. What are you arguing about with them? He asked. A man answered him from the crowd. Master, I have brought my son to you. There is a spirit of dumbness in him, and when it takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and goes rigid. And I asked her disciples to cast it out, and they were unable to. You faithless generation, he said to them in reply. How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me. They brought the boy to him, and as soon as the spirit saw Jesus set through the boy into convulsions, and he fell to the ground and lay writhing there, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked a father, how long has this been happening to him? From childhood, he replied, and it has often thrown him into the fire and into the water, in order to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us. If you can, retort a Jesus, everything is possible for anyone who has faith. Immediately, the father of the boy cried out. I do have faith. Help the little faith I have. And when Jesus saw how many people were pressing round him, he rebuked the unclean spirit. Deaf and dumb spirit, he said, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again. Then throwing the boy into violent convulsions, it came out, shouting. And the boy lay there so like a corpse that most of them said, he is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him up. And he was able to stand. When he had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately. Why were we unable to cast it out? This is the kind he answered. That can only be driven out by prayer.

"It's not unusual that people today are interested in these same things. They're interested in a kind of gospel that offers all the upside and none of the downside. But such a gospel is neither true to what Jesus is proclaiming as we're about to see. Nor is it true to human experience. No, Jesus says, let me tell you what it means. For me to go. And let me tell you what it means for you to follow. And then look at these fellows. It's quite incredible, isn't it? And then James and John, the sons of zebedee, from the fishing business, they came to him and teacher, they said, we want you to do for us whatever we ask. However, he was going to accomplish it. They recognized that somehow or another. He was going to introduce the messianic age. By the time the resurrection has taken place and before Pentecost, you will remember in 8 chapter one, it is these same disciples who come to Jesus and ask him the question, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? When does the good stuff start? Jesus, when do we get all the good business? You're going to rain on David's throne forever and forever. We understand that part. And that's why Jesus we want you to do for us whatever we ask. Well, what do you want me to do for you, he asked? Well, they said we'd like to get our reservation in for our seats. It's never too soon to reserve good seats. Jesus is talking about suffering. They're talking about status. They had enjoyed privileges to this point, hadn't they? The particular privilege of the transfiguration. Peter James and John taken by Jesus into a unique and wonderful opportunity. Perhaps that it made them think that they were deserving of such experiences. When God draws us close and introduces us to the wonders of his love, it's not because we're deserving of it. It's an indication of his amazing grace. But maybe somehow or another, they said, you know, there's a reason why he took us up on the mountain of transfiguration. We are the key guys. So why don't we just go ahead and ask him and see if we can't make sure our seats are reserved. One on the right one on the left. That would be nice Jesus. If you could do that for us.

Many people will believe them, then he says you'll hear of wars and rumors of wars. Don't panic, he says, this is just the beginning. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won't follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation and kingdom against kingdom. "Was her now we said as we closed our last Jesus stories episode, that Jesus and his disciples had been in the temple. He had taught there, and he appointed out a widow who contributed all of her wealth two cents to the temple, eliciting the praise that she had given more than any one else. Now Jesus and his disciples are leaving the temple, and his disciples remark on the magnificence of this structure and indeed it is magnificent it was magnificent. Herod, the builder of this temple, was known for his projects as building projects. This temple had been in progress for 84 years, it covered 35 acres. Some of the stones used in this construction weigh in at 400 tons each, people still don't understand how these stones were moved and put into place. This temple was indeed a marvel of engineering and architectural beauty. So the disciples remark about the temple, teacher, look at these magnificent buildings, look at the impressive stones in the walls. Jesus responds with a statement that sounds impossible. Yes, he says, look at these great buildings, but they will be completely demolished, not one stone will be left on top of another. I imagine this left the disciples stunned, after all, here was this magnificent structure. How is it going to be completely demolished? Later that evening, some of the disciples come to Jesus to ask him this very question there across the valley from Jerusalem on the mount of olives, perhaps they can see the temple across the valley. Peter James John and Andrew come to Jesus with their questions. Tell us, they say, when will all of this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled. Jesus launches into a prophecy, its complex enough that the scholars today still debate over its full meaning, out not attempt to delve into the meaning of this podcast, but eventually I may share with you some ideas on Jesus stories extra podcast episode. But, like the scholars, it will be my opinion and only that. Jesus begins by telling his disciples what signs to look for. "You know, if they have Internet bundles to do that, that's a challenge, but for the most part, our experience has been the most people underestimate somebody that can't read and write. So why try to help them understand the Bible because they're not qualified? I mean, that really is the belief of the judicial church in Ghana as well as I think most people would think. You'd have to have somebody at least can read and write. Well, tell me that's a Jesus. You know, I mean, I mean, Peter James and John is inner circle where I don't understand. I mean, and he lived in an oral culture as well. And it was a real privilege. If you had education, like Matthew, Luke, Paul, but majority of the people were just like people living in Africa. They had no access to education. So, so I spent a lot of time emphasized and played to their strengths. Their oral learners. So if they can hear the Bible, they won't listen to 25 chapters a week, if you don't. And if they're Muslim background, believers, what am I supposed to do? And you tell them, they do it. You know, where it doesn't always work that way. We worked with church at people in in Ghana, because we have a lot of traditional churches to meet right there where we live. But there's no unreached people going to them. They're all from tribes that have a high percentage of Christians and are open to Christianity. But if you're from like a tribe like the Ganga, which is the tribe we've been focusing on, they resist. I mean, they will reject you from the family if you go to a church building. So it's just a, I don't know. It's been interesting. Seeing how things work. But the focus, there's so much of the unreached people that are in.

"To go and look, barnabas had met tall just after his conversion, maybe a couple of years after his conversion. And he helped Paul get to meet Peter and then send him on his way to toss us, and when he saw Antioch, he remember the story that this young man Paul had said that Paul had heard from Jesus that he was to go with the message of Salvation to all the gentiles and he at barnabas could see it happening before his very eyes and so he went to find Paul brought him back and they enjoyed a wonderful time of spiritual harvest. Profits from Jerusalem came up to encourage the believers. One of them called agabus as part of that mission of prophetic teaching. Told the church that a famine was coming upon the world and sure enough it did in the time of Claudius this famine was going to be very severe, especially for the people in Judea. And so the church in Antioch led by Paul and barnabas gathered a gift and they sent Paul and barnabas town to Jerusalem to support the poor that were there. Paul talks about this in galatians chapter two versus one to 7. He doesn't mention the gift because of course he doesn't want to promote himself as some kind of special person, but he tells the gentiles believers in galatia that when he went to Jerusalem, he talked to the pillars of the church. Peter James and John, about what it was that he believed the good news of Jesus was. And they added nothing to his message, but gave him the right hand of fellowship. And so he returned to Antioch with great joy. Back in Jerusalem in chapter 12 of the actually the apostles, we hear of Peter getting imprisoned and miraculously escaping and leaving the city of Jerusalem. Perhaps really very rarely to return again because of becoming this marked man. And then in axe chapter 13, we see Paul and barnabas back in Antioch, praying and fasting with the other leaders of that church and the Holy Spirit says you need to go and do the thing that I've asked you to do. And so off they go on their first missionary journey, and they're returning in acts chapter 14 and it's such a joyful time as they talk about the door that's been open to the gentiles that God has done such a great work..

Trees Could Be a Mental, Physical and Climate Change Antidote

"Is well known. The trees help counter climate change by soaking up carbon dioxide. Now there is a growing body of research to point to many ways of dose of trees can improve our mental and physical health. Here's martha bebinger member station. W. b. you are on how and why the tiny sapling robin williams planted thirty years ago towers above her boston home. I raise this tree when i raised my children and look at this look at that. She says there's something about being near this tree. It makes everybody a little bit happy around here when you're looking for strength you can't do better than looking at a tree and there's evidence williams may will be gleaning any number of direct or associated health benefits a longer life. Bitter birth outcomes lower stress levels lower risk of heart disease. Dr howard lumpkin. Is it the university of washington school of public health. Lower risk of diabetes reduced symptoms of adhd proximity to trees is associated with a ridiculously broad range of health benefits. I wish we had pills. That were this good for health. A few countries notably japan and south korea have invested in a practice known as forest bathing which is spending time among trees as a preventive health measure but prescribing time in nature is still pretty far outside mainstream medicine in the. Us from can says that. Maybe because there's a lot we don't know what doses needed. Do you need to walk. Among trees is sufficient just to look at the trees from outside your window. Do you need big trees or do small trees do the trick we you know. We're not able to tease the forest from the trees. Peter james at harvard medical school aims to answer a lot of those questions. He's merging health data captured by phones. Real time surveys about wellbeing and mood and street. View mapping data to dig into. What's exactly within view. Is it trees. Is it flowers and how those things are related to help behaviors and health outcomes.

"Depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, as well as you know, longevity and mortality, So I think there's a very strong body of evidence that this continues to grow so Stunning a right that my cognitive functioning might be affected by the birch tree that I loved in the front yard where I grew up, I do. I wonder if there is this causality or is it correlation? Is it that we know there is a specific effect from the tree? Or is it that we know that there are more trees in areas where people also have Access to the other resources necessary to be healthier. So certainly this is something we are. We're delving into, and I can't assert that it's causal right now. But you know lots of different types of studies randomized trials, for instance, where you have people walk in green settings versus kind of urban settings. Um, you know that's kind of the gold standard of evidence, and we do see effects on cognitive function, blood pressure in those types of trials. And I think also when we look at large scale observational studies, you know, we do account for, for instance, socioeconomic factors that might be Different in greener communities versus less screen communities. And we, you know, we still see these these associations so I would say we're moving in that direction of sayings or potentially causal. Another thing with noting is that we do see that actually lower socioeconomic status communities make it a bigger benefit. From trees and green space than in higher socioeconomic status communities so that we kind of speak to the idea that it's not just, um, you know, some sort of correlation that we're observing, but actually, it is something about these green spaces that seems to be driving health Professor Peter James. I want to grab one other call here. Forest in Somerville Forest. Briefly. Your tree? Yes. My tree is this huge tree on some of the lab in the middle of the cemetery next to market basket, and it's really beautiful. And I've lived here for 25 years and Enjoyed looking at it. And ever since, and it seems to be dying right now. So I'm kind of concerned about it. Oh, dear. Well, thank you for the shout out for us to your favorite tree. So, Peter, I want to come back to you and ask So you know, force can go stand under that tree. Hopefully the tree is going to be okay. What are the What's the guidance for people who want to take advantage of the health benefits of trees? Do you go stand under him for a long time? Do you go for walks and forests? How does one bring this positive effect? Into one's life. Yeah. So I'd say a little bit of all of the above. It seems that you know it would. It would be beneficial to spend time in nature girl and and spend time amongst trees. Um, but, you know, I will also speak to the the the the larger picture here and that that is that we need to encourage our policymakers to maintain and plant more trees to develop more parks. And and to fund this work. I think that's really the important thing here. A lot of the work that I do shows that people are not necessarily gaining the big benefit by going and spending time. But you know, in Yosemite, it's really about having trees as part of our everyday lives. Um And really this this nature is is an essential part of our proper and optimal health. And so it's really something we need to have every day. Um, so that's that's truly I think, um, something that we can change by having our policymakers plant more trees and great trees into our lives. Peter, what's your tree? So I'd have to say if the red maple that was planted right outside my house right when my daughter was born, and, um, you know, it was a sapling two years ago, and now my daughter's walking and talking, and the tree is about to burst through our window. So it's been really incredible watching that then then grow up together. Wonderful. Allison's on the phone in Boston. Alison Lightning round. What's your tree? Actually, I have many trees, but I'm more concerned about the great green space, Um in Crane Ledge and Hyde Park, which is And there's a proposal to demolish it for a housing complex, and I think maintaining those older words and green spaces. Um, so much more important, Alison, I'm going to take. I'm sorry. Going to take it back from you there. Thanks for that. Heads up. Peter James, I also want to thank you, assistant professor in the Department.

"peter james" Discussed on Jesus Stories

"Was a standard Jewish tradition, by the way. So Jesus goes in and asks, what is all of this? The child is a dead. She's only asleep. Well, they laugh at Jesus. But Jesus makes them all leave. He takes gyrus, his wife and Peter James and John to the room of this 12 year old girl. He takes her by the hand. By the way, touching someone who is dead would have made Jesus unclean, something which did not concern him, he takes the little girl's hand and speaks. Little girl, he says, get up. And she does. She gets up and walks around. Everyone was overwhelmed and totally amazed. Jesus tells them to give her something to eat, and not to tell what has happened. Jesus goes on from that house and two men who are blind follow him. Now the Bible doesn't tell us how these men found Jesus or could follow him since they are blind. We are not told why they were blind. The Bible just tells us that two blind men are following Jesus. They're not only following they're calling out to Jesus. Son of David have mercy on us. This particular address, son of David, indicates that they know and believe that Jesus is the messiah. They believe deeply enough to follow Jesus right into a house in which he goes. He asks the do you believe that I can make you see? Yes, lord they tell it. We do. Jesus touches their eyes and says, because of your faith, it will happen. Then the men could see. Just like the raising of the little girl, Jesus tells these men not to tell anyone about this, but the men can't be quiet. They went out and spread his fame all over the region. Now, why would Jesus tell these people not to talk about this amazing thing that has happened to them? The next story gives us a little idea, perhaps, but basically it's because of the opposition to Jesus teaching preaching and miracle working is beginning to grow. Jesus is working on a heavenly time table. It is not time for this opposition to reach its peak. As Jesus leaves the house a demon possessed man is brought to him. The demon didn't allow this man to speak. So Jesus throws the demon out of him and the man is able to speak. Now, there are two reactions to this exorcism. The crowds are amazed, saying nothing like this has ever happened in Israel, and the pharisees, though. They have a different take. He's casting out demons, they say, because he is empowered by the prince of demons, meaning Satan, the devil. Now with this type of opposition starting to appear, Jesus leaves this area and he decides to go home to his original home Nazareth, and on the next Sabbath day Jesus is in the synagogue, teaching to the amazement of the attendees. Now remember, this is Jesus hometown. So these people knew Jesus. He had grown up there. He was probably a Carpenter as was Joseph, his earthly parrot, and probably at one time maybe even a business person in this town. So the town is asking, where did he get all this wisdom and power to perform such miracles? After all, he's just a Carpenter. He's the son of Mary. Actually, this is an insult to say that he's the son of his mother. What they're saying is that Jesus is illegitimate..

"The peter james and john's right that act of telling our trauma our sin our regrets. It actually rewires. Our brains rewires our view of relationships. And it's one of the ways that our deepest wounds are healed. And so that's what we need to tell our stories well with people. That's so good. You know i. I was thinking about telling our stories. I was thinking about how it could impact others. I wasn't really thinking about how telling our story can impact ourselves. You know as we as we listen and to our story once more because what it does is it makes you integrate. It makes you integrate. The truth of god into your story life story. You're you're faced with having to bring god into those experiences and it sort of takes your god concept in then puts it back onto your image kind of re re writes it integrates. The two i was. I was thinking i had one thought about you. Know when when other people get a here are got in our stories they also get to reframe their god image as well because one. I have so one of my pillars of belief that i have is from you getting healed aaron Yeah so you're super naturally healed and this was. When i wasn't a christian told his story and i was left in this place of going while. I don't think errands aligarh. And i don't think he's stupid and he's saying he got supernatural healed and so interestingly enough you your healing is like one of my pillars of faith because unlike the spirit healed aaron so when i hear your story about that it refrains my image. I now you got as a healer. That's because that's what's so beautiful about telling stories is testimonies and stories. They they have this power to rewrite our god image in like this proposition. Who's are it's going to get some kind of kind of very psychological. We have defense's for that like that's not true. That's that's not true. I don't believe that you're you're you're wrong but stories kind of get in our heart in a in a sneaky way you know so i tell a story about testimony of being healed in your like kind of guarded. If i'm like god can heal anybody. You can heal you. There's miracles you'll be like no. It's not true but then you hear a story and it kinda gets in you in a sneaky way and that sort Wire your got image as well. And i and i had to reconcile that story. I couldn't. I couldn't pretend like i didn't hear i mean we do that. We pretend like we don't hear stories but in this case i can do it as close to you. I think that's pretty cool. Yeah that's pretty cool. I didn't know that that's awesome. I've never told do that. No oh no you know. That's really cool deep things going on this i you know i was. I was having a this kind of connects with everything. But you know. I have a personal story about i. One of the first things. I remember from my childhood was my best friends in like fifth grade. Were these three girls right and all your eyes pretty blonde and but this is the thing so i was. I went on the. This is like a distinct memory in my mind. I go.

"Because you're just buying into stuff here that this wasn't meant to be some sort of demeaning statement this was stained of the glaciers. Look any use your heads here a little bit. You need to think through what's going on here so let's begin to process what's going on because you just blindly accepting some things. I'm really concerned for you. Because of that. And that's the heart in which polish writing this but yet the word foolish is a pretty strong term. You know but it didn't mean just you idiots. Yes it was. You're not thinking you know better than this. Let's get back to it. So in in reference to that then we do not for example Illustration that would were told that a fool has said in his heart through his. No god now. Obviously paul is not saying that they have Gone back to the point of denying in going back to idols and things of that nature but they acting as if god no longer real to them or acting as if. Wait a minute God's changed his mind. No that is not true. So don't you know don't take on this mentality like you're saying wait a minute folks you're going to thank you. Know jesus christ did not die in vain. He died on the cross. He died for you. He carried your sins. And therefore you saved by grace and not by the works of the law. Give back to the basics people that's because and base him confronting them on the fact that they've got fallen into the trap that somehow another grace's not enough. There's gotta be something more to it. that's the way the enemy starts. He starts subtle. You know you look at even with adam and eve rent when they were first tempted in the garden the things he said. We're not false. They were actually had had a lot of truth in them but as he got even as he started to turn her then he was able to tell the deeper lies and then she bought them and so what they are at this point is they may not be at that point. Where as you said were there worshiping other gods. But if paul doesn't address this now they could easily fall back into that if if they're not careful and once again paul wants to remind them and therefore we have to go back to chapter two just to let it but he c. Wait a minute. This is paul is going and saying look folks remember what i have just taught you. You know. it's not as if you hadn't heard it is not as if i hadn't given you the truth i have. You need to go back. And remember what i have taught you and and go back even further where paul goes and says. Wait a minute folks. I did when i got saved. I did not go and converse with peter james and john and all those you know when i got saved i'm went and converse with the master for three years.

"For your word. We thank you that it is living. It is powerful and it is sharper than any two edged sword in fact that you need to do spiritual surgery in all of us just as you needed to do spiritual surgery in paul and then peter james and john those Those that are affected by this so far. The god. I ask you and lord not to be presumptuous. But i give you permission to do spiritual surgery on my heart and lord. I ask that you would do that for all of us. so far. the blessed time in your precious name. Amen amen tim. If you want to be fifteen twenty hips and i'll be reading out of the new international this morning it starts off. We who are jews by birth and not quote gentile centers know that a man is not justified by observing the law but by faith in jesus christ so we too have put our faith in jesus christ that we may be justified by faith in christ and not by observing the law because by observing the law. No one will be justified. If while we seek to be justified in christ it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners. Does that mean that. Christ promotes sin. Absolutely not if i rebuild what i destroyed. I prove that. I am a law breaker for through the law. I died to the law so that i might live for god. I have been crucified with. Christ i no longer live but christ lives in me. The life i live in the body. I live by faith in the son of god who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside. The grace of god for if righteousness could be gained through the law. Christ died for nothing. What a wonderful wonderful powerful portion of computers as paul now is is finishing up. This thought remember now scripture. You know like chapter to the subdivisions and everything. That's put in there by man. This is a continuous thought. In which paul is presenting to us so it you know it goes right back to what we learned last week and even the week before here in chapter two where paul is still going to address how we approach sin now most of us when we look at sin. We look at somebody else's sin and if we look at our certainly i was is not as bad as the next guy. Wait a minute. That is not what god sees. That is not how god approaches sin. My understanding in the scriptures ten is that sin to god is sin right. That's it who is the one who put all these categories or sins in categories. Men does that right. You know man says is this sin is worse than this in and this is not as bad as sin and god looks at it and said. Wait a minute if you had broken one of the law James tells us is if you have broken one of the law then you have broken the law. I don't care what went. take your pick up. guess what. They're all equals So if you break one you break them up. I see that to say whether it's a what we would consider a minor offence or a major offense nonetheless. It is an offence. Yeah well it's like..

"That's probably the best place You can reach out to me personally through any of my social media links which is planning so you can find easily But the yeah. This is what we're giving our energy and time to And our hope is to see minimally fifteen gospel. Saturation hubs in north america. By twenty thirty similar to what we've been doing saturate the sound all right. Kansas city needs to be on the radar. We're gonna start taking a few questions before we wrap things up. Got one here from erin so again anyone who's online. We'd love to drive your question in aaron's asking. What kind of frameworks are structures as. We look at the church or being the church. Do you find create the best opportunity to cultivate this sort of michelle lifestyle on all believers. So it's really it's a structured question. It sounds like yeah. Whenever i teach on this i talked about this. A few key disciple making environment you've got to think about for your church One of course as you and god like spiritual formation cannot be neglected people. They don't know how to commune with the holy spirit. Walk with jesus or alive Through the spiritual formation practices. They won't have anything to give you perfect. You can do nothing. Abide in me and you'll bear much fruit. So that's the first environment is helping. Your people truly have communion with god in their own personal life the second i think is a triad Jesus had peter james and john so it's a few that we always say Who knows your story. Who knows your struggle. Who knows where you need to regularly repent and you have anybody like that in your life and so we call them. Da group some calm triads. But jesus had three peter james and john and so who knows your story who knows your struggle who knows where you're gonna continue to struggle need repentance is walking with your life in that way so that's the second one And some call that intimate space you know. I know alex absolutely others are written on these spaces using sociology as a springboard third space for us is going to be its mission community or community group. But it's it's now it's kind of more like my Relational space where we know each other. We're not all going to go super deep but we are going to do life together. It's what we can practice using our gifts practice gospel fluency in community practice being on mission so for us. It's know got my life with god. I got my life on life with a few three others two or three others. I got life in community on mission. Were we're doing life together and we're doing meals together and we're doing the practices of one another together and we're learning how to use our gifts together so that's a third space. I think you have to figure out. Then i think there's a force base and that's that social public space where you're engaging in what's going on in the world and others are helping. You're doing it with you. So you're not alone in your mission. So life with god. Life on life life in community life on mission out in the world..

"And the bible sleep is spoken of as sort of a negative thing it says to christians now is time to wake up for our salvation is nearer than when we first believed and we all know what it's like to fall asleep at an inappropriate time. Maybe fallen asleep in church by the way pastors. No when you fall asleep. I think it comes as a revelation that people know that not only. Can you see me when. I'm speaking but i can see you. And when someone nods out they make like put their hands up to their face like they're preying. I know you're sleeping. Okay especially when you start snoring but we always deny it warmer sleepy for some reason. Some of them say they don't know you did and these guys fell asleep. But you see. Jesus was getting them ready. Same boys you need to pray because he knew a storm was brewing. He knew that hard times ahead and they needed to be praying literally. The devil son is on his way with some armed guards to arrest jesus and a reminder to us that fearlessness can be as much of a sin as breaking a commandment. See there's not just sins of commission that's when you do what you should not do but there are sins up omission. When you don't do what you should do. The bible says to him that knows to do good and does not do it to him descent. So if the lord impresses upon your heart the need to pray and you don't pray that could be a sin. Jesus assane to peter james and john guys you need to pray yeah. Whatever we're going to catch some z's right now. That was a mistake. His third step down was peter trusted human effort. Instead of god's power he trusted human efforts. instead of god's power six of mark fourteen. They laid their hands on him and took him in one of them. Who stood by jew his stored at struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. His gospel gives us a few more details about this. Jesus said to. Peter put your sort in its place for all who take the sword and live by the sword will die by the sword and then jesus says to peter. Don't you realize it column my father and he would send twelve legions of angels now in fairness we can understand peter's outrage judas iscariot he's hung out with this guy for three years plus thought him is thought of them as a friend. Indeed here is judas. Who's betrayed jesus and judas betrayed. Jesus the bible says the kiss i mean couldn't judicious they look at the guy in pointing to jesus arrest them or the guy. I'm shaking his hand areas. He betrays them with the kiss. And in the original language it wasn't just a peck on the cheek. It was repeated. Kisses a form of intimacy and he's appearing to be someone who loves jesus when he's trained him. And jesus says to judas. He approaches friend. Why have you come friend. He should have said fiend. Why have you come. Jesus why he came but i think judas missed it. But christ was giving to judas..

He had a serious lapse of faith when he lied about sarah bean as wife seen she was his sister because he was afraid of what would happen. How about samson known for his superhuman strength. He was overthrown in his moral weakness. This is why you must never lawyer guard in any area of your life see. It was self confidence. I heard a story about two in a frog. They'd like to hang out together. In upon farmer brown's field and one summer the pun dried up because it was a drought so the frog went to the ducks. This is a true story and said is you gotta help me out care. I'm stuck care but but if each of you would take a stick in each of your beaks i could hold onto this stick with my mouth and you could fly me out of here. So the duck said okay. We'll do it. And so they. Each grabbed hold of that stick with their beats and the little frog jumped up and grabbed it with his mouth. And as they're flying on a former brownfield farmer brown's down there and he looks up and he sees it's amazing sight of holding the stick in their beaks was a frog holding non as mouth and he said dad is an amazing thing who thought of that and the frog said. I see let go. He had to take credit right. The bible says pride goes before a fall. Peter second step down was prayer looseness. I'm not even sure if that's a word but it's a real thing prayer list nece. How many of us would be honest to admit that. We need to pray more. I know that. I do and peter was sleeping when he should have been frayne going back to mark fourteen verse thirty seven there in the gardening semi now jesus says to the disciples peter james and john watch with me watching pray and we read these words and this is from the new king james version. He came in from them sleeping and said to peter simon being. Could you not watch one hour. Watch and pray lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak again. He went away and prayed and spoke the same words and when he returned them asleep again for their eyes were heavy and they did not know what to say to him. "This morning you mentioned something about three characteristics that you look for in you know impossible people that you want a disciple i think. Could you share that with us. Yes we're looking for a fat people that was that was. It is what it is. I can do. I'm available and i'm pat. We're faithful available and teachable. Joffrey jumping in on the comedy. That's really good. That is such a simple way to remember what we're looking for and say full available and that's really good. You know the importance of discipleship is is. If you really do want to grow in your faith if you really do desire to take that next step it's so important to find somebody that can actually help you. Learn the bible learn Some of the things that are in it that are harder to understand into really walk through life with you because there's so many bad habits that many of us that have that have learned over the years and we don't even realize that what we're doing is not what the very best what god is asking of us and so by being connected with a more mature follower of christ that allows them allows you to to be able to see one how you're live it out loud how you deliver your life properly but to for that person to be able to speak life into you and to be able to point out some of the things and some of the habits that you're doing that will not get you closer or will not allow you to have the fullness of god inside of you thoughts on that well it's important as a disciple maker to be good at asking questions in. Yeah because it's it's not so much Our presentation as it is listening and caring and responding to people where they are and doing it naturally. Yeah yeah we were talking about earlier to berry. I think we brought this up as far as the church. You know the there's many churches that are focused in on on really bringing in the masses and because they want to build the church and they want to bring in as many people as they can to be able to allies to them to speak to them and and that is absolutely needed in today's church but at the same time just as important is the church to focus in on raising up disciples and then multiplying them as you were saying. Faithful available and teachable disciples. Jesus gave us the model. Yes he disciple twelve man and scripture says they turn the world upside dance amazing and he had an inner circle even of peter james and john so our approach is to help pastors build a team of leaders that through whom they can reach the members of the church and beyond. Yeah you know. And if there's somebody out there that wants to be disciples and you don't have a church man by all means contact us because we would love to connect you with somebody that can help you And if you do have a church and you're part of a church and you wanna bring a discipleship program to your church. Joffrey is a perfect person to connect with. Because he can help. Give you the material and help walk you through the step by step plan that he does with the pastors.
