"You had to pay. While i've got lots and bright memories from australia's driving my land over around and so forth and all sorts of things of taking place lots of adventures and great times. But if i had to s- name a favorite place it would have to obviously be about sea birds with sea birds and so would move to the west coast. I always find the west coast. I don't know anybody over in queensland but the west coast to the overseas fractured. There's more of a more of a breeze feels a bit more like the atlantic. Which is what i'm used to and for me. My favorite place defy hats as just spend the my last three on the planet and they would have to be australia would be at the abroad. Silence i've only. I've only been there once. And that was back in nineteen seventy seven and we took a small boat out from a small settlement. They're the engine. Kept coming out. We were in danger of drifting forever out into the middle of the ocean but apparently the guy did know about engines and managed to fix it. We spent about ten days out on the umbrellas. And i have these wonderful memories of unending sunsets with thousands and thousands of frigate birds. These prehistoric looking creatures bubis overhead turns mast on the ground and to me. The brawlers sums up. What australia is all about. A land of open space amanda birds. That's and the last question that i've got if you had twenty four hours to go birding in the world let's say it was your last twenty four hours. You could go birding in your loss anywhere in the world. Where would you us. That's a very easy question for me. Very easy question. I mentioned earlier. That antarctica was just about my favorite place on earth. I have one place which is close to antarctica not quite antarctica but the nathan antarctic conversion. So some people might cute that biologically. It is part of antarctica but politically. It isn't bigger sits above the sixty six degrees parallel. And that would be a place called south. Georgia says georgia is the most amazing place on earth. Anybody this listening. Let me tell you whatever you do in life the one place. Everybody must've should visit. Is south georgia. It's an island about one hundred miles long and yet on e. some three or four miles wide it has peaks rise up to nine and a half thousand feet. It has over one hundred glasses years and it is now completely rat free. governor rats. They're about five or six years ago. The birds coming back in their droves over sixty four million pairs that may repeat that over sixty four million pairs of seabirds nest. Assess georgia. But i can tell you. I nathan go. I would go to the bay of isles. I go to albatross items and i would climb up through the green tussock since it connects to one hour process go. They are without the most beautiful of over sunday. Of course the largest of birds and also the some of the longest lived of all birds some reaching ages of seventy eight years of age. There is no more wonderful pristine part of the world than says georgia and particularly the bay of isles. This was the place that robin cushman murphy did. Most of his research and for a burger. You should know this is where the phrase came from. I have now joined a higher cult of mortals for. I have seen the albatross. So road robert cushman murphy. "And you know there are many birds that we have lost look at the zealand storm. Petrol disappeared for over well over one hundred years and then suddenly came back and so there are birds. The petrol another that came back from the brink of extinction and normally the abyss of extinction is just that it's the black abyss from which there is no return and yet birds have been known to do it. And they've made unexpected appearances after one hundred or two hundred years and in some ways. That's what makes me burning so incredibly interesting because they live in areas that we often cannot get to easily anyway. Which is the deep ocean. And it's in that part of their lives that we know so there's about but with the latest Approach that we go by trading responders onto two birds etc and then tracking them with satellites and so forth. We are now beginning to understand a lot more their their journeys. i mean. take a wandering albatross. Can you believe that wandering patrols leaves the nest as a youngster does not have any parental guidance goes to see for the first time and in its first year will fly around one hundred eighty thousand kilometers. It's clinton live for something. Like sixty to seventy years and in his lifetime will fly eight and a half million miles. These are things that lambert. Just don't don't do for me. Is what makes sea birds so incredibly exciting an interesting. I live on the ocean. So last question about your book. Are you working on else. Oh not necessarily but you working on anything else. We are working on something which we call the conservation issue. And what we're doing is that we're taking this book. Seabirds the new identification guide were making it into a bigger four-match and we're doing that so that the full beauty in detail of your place can be seen and we're hoping to get it out by the end of the year and so the plates will be the same. The texts will be the same but they'll be laid out differently. There'll be much more space in between everything. Everything would be much bigger. And we're doing a limited edition. Just one thousand copies for the serious collectors. And so that's what we're working on right now. I'm working twelve hours on it Trying to get ready for the christmas period whether we make it or not. I don't know but stay tuned. i'll let you know can is Can preorder that or is it a you. "Smell of diesel rotting fish and tobacco and so began my love of the ocean and at sea birds and also by the way for the people who worked at the fishermen sailors and mariners on my already teens obvious regular but novice watcher. During autumn gaels has knives and west komal under the tutelage of such legendary corner. Seabird as roy phillips and laurie williams one classics storm stands out in my memory. It was late. Low tober the winds rage and screamed all around us but low the atlantic ward inward dashing itself against the corners coast. The whole bay was a mall strom of foaming whitecaps and black. Watery hollows and above the troughs with contemptuous ease. The gannett's rode out the storm. Rising and falling in long white lines thousands upon thousands escaping the storm like retreating troops. Hardly a minute passed without the shout of bouncy skewer petrol or say binds until then most of my burning had been terrestrial but that gail converted my attention to seabirds. I have been a seabird ever. Since these for my formative years it was the perfect start for a life that would be filled with epic adventures and endless travel on research opportunities in pursuit of my greatest love. Seabirds birds that live where others cannot over home and in the open ocean you know. I don't imagine that an english guile coming in off the ocean would be a particularly pleasant place to be burning. How old were you when you got into that. Did you say. I can't remember obviously in my teens. So yeah having lived in brixham for most of my sort of childhood life and sort of branched out a little bit and managed to meet up with people you know in those days burning was not as popular as it is now and you could count in your county on one hand or maybe two hands. The number of birds that were present these days. Of course you go for a twitch and there's hundreds of people but in those days it was just a select few and in some ways. Those older days those days from long ago were very enjoyable. Not quite crowded. Yeah will your family. Sort of like a nature and niger. Family or we of on your own in terms of Being interested in beds. And now i was very much on my own being interested in birds but my father who was an officer in the royal navy Heated notice that. Whenever i spoke about birds whenever i drew birds whenever i had anything to do with watching birds i had a passion and he would spend quite long periods out at sea and then one year. He's to me. I know that you love birds and my next trip overseas. I bring you ca- present. And i knew what the president was going to be. "The silence of the audience is definite. And i begin my opening lines to my favorite story. The open ocean is two birds. What space is to mankind. It is the last and final frontier. The most birds poses the harshest the most unyielding environment on the face of the planet. It's an environment covers. Nearly two thirds of this are mostly blue world and yet as the ocean travelers amongst you will shortly appreciate it. Possible sometimes to hundreds even thousands of miles from the nearest point of land go to the rails of ship. Look see words and see a bird but these are not simply birds. These are not sparrows. They are not crows. they are not robbins. These are seabirds and of the world's four hundred thirty or so seabird species there is one group that stands out a simply something very different birds. That are immense in size birds that are capable of flying over one thousand kilometers in a single day. Birds that can live to fifty sixty seventy a maybe even two eighty or so years of age. These birds that refill each of you with a sense of all the sense of disbelief and a sense of childlike wonderment. And these of course are the alba atrocities. So come with me now to that world the world of the albatross and dear listener hopefully you will. There is no future for our oceans or for our birds. I would like to point out the work. This should be a mandatory life experienced croats never to repeat to the game to put it in perspective. I have devoted my life to see birds and birding and i've only been in this region just a handful of times over fifty years so this is a rare opportunity. Don't miss it. There are only a few places left is gone to the trip of an absolute lifetime. We're going to have fun. We're gonna see birds over half of the world's all atrocities can be seen on this trip along not to mention for five or so different penguins theses. If you're a seabird burder this is not to nest. Just the packaging blows your mind radian. I just wanted to people around the world. I mean you ordering from a top boss company who take customer service very seriously yes. I have spent my life my most of my adult life at sea either at sea or as an extradition mater with literally hundreds of visits to the southern ocean which includes by the way landings at both prince edit and marian islands. I want to go on record. As urging any burder not to miss. Burtless half africa's flocked to marry him voyage. This as if you haven't already realized this folks. This is a rare opportunity to visted one of the most remote. Oceanic area is on the planet quite simply. It's a chance of allies time. This doesn't happen very often so please do not miss it. Also to allay any concerns the changes to the ship. Choice and tenor direction are old huge pluses. For the event. The change for instance to the msa musica is a huge advantage over the previous vessel. This is because she is larger. she is better equipped. She's better laid out being larger. She is eminently more stable on will provide safe and protected opportunities throughout the voyage. You are not getting illness more ship. That's under roll. Unroll thirty forty degrees here. These are huge passenger ships which are very very stable on the reverse itinery starting in cape town and ending in durban is a stroke of absolute genius. "You know your birds with our all field guides. Many artists effort went into the field. They sketch birds from skin. They lacked the feel the authenticity of his shape. If you're out in the field you can see a bird. You can sketch on can sketch in the field. sketching gonzalves. the general impression in shape of a bird. Has it got a careening flight liquor shearwater. Is it a flat. Her and glider. Is it slow in. The boreas like paddock is it dainty and dashing hopping from wade topped away. Talk like a butterfly in an august guard. All these things you try to capture as an artist and this is what makes drawn and painted figures so much better than just a single photographic image my opinion. But that's the way i feel and also you can do so many more images if you're painting rather than trying to save for one big photograph of a single bird so for me painted images alive more bird to shown to a person that is trying to identify the bird that is just rounding hedlund miles away so something about seabirds as they can be really tricky turn into i've been on a couple of pledges and hostile struggled him so high. The hardens soul of this book Are the art played on the facing played captions and in these plates. We illustrate the subspecies more two inches ages. And sexes sexes and lots of detailed captions to enable idea to grants and this is by both novice and expert burgers. And so what you put into making a pledge it it. It's a huge commitment. First off you need to choose what you're going to be painting the signs an easy thing but it's can be quite complicated and you have to judge how complicated that process is going to be. That is the species on an average plate in the new vote. You will want to play to pick two species birds that are similar in color or pattern or even sewage and maybe even close relatives for example king penguin an emperor penguin. They looked some similar. They're both large penguins. Or you might choose the flying bird. Maybe illustrate a kate petrol against an antarctic petrol. They are both former on petrels. They're both similar in size and they both have absolutely diagnostic huge patterns. And that's what you want to show. If it's a complicated bird like a gull or an albatross you might only show one species on the Because there are so many different. Plumage is and some of these flinches aren't necessarily age related. They might just be in stages with no really true molds. Maybe it's wear and abrasion and it may come as a surprise but in some all atrocities. It takes over twenty years to attain. Full adult. plumage and during those twenty years are constantly albeit slowly. Changing and gulls. Two goals are aquatic. Mar these birds co sometimes take four years to reach..

From the beginning as i said they are conservation concerns already about Invasive mice on the island and we don't want to make that any wis with judaizing any potential ratzel insects or anything from from the ship so we cannot actually get onto marion island. Also logistics of getting two thousand people over the krisha onto marrying which has very limited landing space would be an absolute nightmare not to get onto marion on it. And that island is very well protected and reserved for people like researches so we will not get onto maitland. We all working on getting a permit to into the marine protected area and the idea would be to try and get to within a few hundred meters of shoal. We can anchor.
