"And i gotta say that you know they had taken that out you you could have had to move without that because the movies an hour and thirty seven minutes you could take the cute. Don't get me wrong. I like them against him adorable but get the fuck outta here with his money man like i say it should have been the short before for the movie star. It should have been the movie star because the movie is an hour and thirty seven minutes which is too long if they take out if they were take out this subplot right here you take it out probably a good five minutes at least at least probably the whole seven minutes. You could have had a clean even hour and a half. We weren't watching these guys down. Look chickens running around chasing eggs all day. Yeah it's cute. Don't get me wrong. It's cute but the movie's already feels like it's just you spread your your you already thin premise dinner plus i mean the the the little chicks acute and all but then also <hes> the other characters are pissing on each other uh-huh. You see what i'm saying how yeah okay yeah no the kids right this really cute also they're going to have this war and he later and then they even chicks do. It's something that's really dark while i was like goddamn fucked up we wrap this up. It's not quite that dog but i have a choice between seeing little cute chickens chase eggs and two birds pissing on each other to with that. I want to go with the weirdest right okay. The one out loud laugh. I got was in that bathroom yeah yeah. There were some scenes that were done very clever. This scene laughed really hard right and i can't really say what it is. I want anybody but there's the <hes> the the the eagle character in the movie who who is if you remember the last movie voiced by voiced by peter gingrich who ends up being a coward and he's even more cowardly here and you can see him right there. There is is at the far right. There's one part where he's running from something and they do something with that. I thought was pretty creative and i. It just caught me off guard. I laughed so hard at that man which is why for this movie but it was funny irineo. It really is man. I mean like i said my embrace frustrated with the stuff that they do continuously family films but i really did honestly get some some. Some good laughs in here. It wasn't like i was sitting there exactly wait for the movie to to to be done. I was waiting for the next gag that i thought they could potentially reach that made me we left but like like i did before you even like the voices in the movie man you know what i like about. Is that if you if you don't know who the actors are they do a good job not sound like themselves some of them. I'm when you say some like bill hader as he was when he was one of the ones i couldn't i had trouble i guess his and the leader pigs bill hader and peter english. I was like that that was wow. "It was almost too perfect of, of an ending. And I guess that's where the criticism is. But overall I was satisfied. And once again, this season has provided the wrap up to certain relationships that have been very emotional to watch, including Tyrian, uncovering, Jamie, and sir c last night, which we'll get into more detail. But those are my high level macro thoughts. I love the show in this last season of six episodes, and the series finale, didn't it wasn't awful enough to ever change the way? I'll feel about this show. I don't need a redo. I definitely don't. I you know, I think we've been somewhat on the same page. I think I've been a little lower on the season than you have been throughout the season, but I definitely am not of the opinion that this is a disaster. This is the worst season in TV history. This is all. All those things I will say what you said about the shocking thing. I actually philosophically don't agree with, when it comes to a series finale, a series finale should be tying up everything it should be you shouldn't. If you have a shocking moment in the finale. The it probably means you messed up along the way that you would need a shocking moment in the finale, because, you know, this should be kind of tying up everything together, it should have been the ultimate sacrifice for John, it couldn't. The right thing. I'm not saying that you couldn't have had him die there. And I think it would've made a lot of sense for him to die there, you know, in a number of ways. I just don't think you necessarily need these shocking moment. The huge moment to go out on you. Look at how this series has been formatted. The season finales have all pretty much been with the exception of sir c blowing up the sept-. It's usually been the second to last episode has been the riots all out in the finale. And that's kind of the HBO model. It's really the TV model when you think about it, usually get that. Unless you have a, a big thing to move over to the next season. It's the finales are wrapping up if you had that huge moment, it's usually slightly before the finale, so that didn't bother me as much as seem to bother you. I'll tell you what the biggest complaint, I have about the final season, we'll go back to the battle of winter fill just was, I thought of very difficult episode to watch and I'm still confused as to why they, they made you struggle or made. A lot of a struggle with that. But there were incredible moments last night. First of all, you know, Tyrian finding Jamie and sir. See under the rubble was powerful because first of all the emotion of sing both sir seeing Jamie together, you know, buried underneath the rubble dead. But, you know, we know Tyrian loved his brother very much. But, you know, I think he always also had feelings for, sir. See, you know how many times did we hear Tyrian over the years? Talk about her love for her children like like this is a positive light that he wants to cast on his evil sister that she loves her children, and she'd do anything for her children. And I think during this last season what I sort of came to the conclusion about last night, maybe even building up in may maybe last week as well is if you think about all the advice that he was wrong on with, Danny. It was always in the protection of king's landing, and sir see to a certain degree like you know, he's always had king's landing and his Lancaster blood on his mind. Which is probably why he ended up giving a lot of bad advice along the way although the advice on how to save all the. Innocent people in king's landing was good advice, that was just ignored by the mad king's daughter who went Matt. But I thought that that was that was really Tyrian last night was really so much about tyranny. And that was the best thing about last night's episode was that they decided to center at around Tyrian that was the best decision. They could've made because I feel like if you if you make that more about John, if you make that more about one of the other characters, they can't carry it as well as Peter Gingrich could have that may be true because you know what kit..

"Now, I know, and I think there's show was also such as seminal moment in all of our lives. It was such a life changer. Even in addition to being such a long period of time. So it's it it was poignant, you know, that for it to end and also wonderful. You know, it also feel like really feels like we told the stories we wanted to tell and everybody's kind of getting left in a beautiful place. Did you feel like pie? Character really just wrapped it up nicely. Yeah. I mean, it's I think that it's a it's like people are fundament. I love. Okay. So gingy, Jen. Gee, who who writes this show talks a lot about people? Not changing. Yeah. You know? And I think that that's a very interesting point of view. It's a very interesting thing to contemplate just chewed on that people don't change. And I think that it's interesting to watch the seven year journey of the character piper in particular because there are parts of her that haven't changed, and there's something very. Human about it. Right. What do you think that definitely think people can change? I definitely think people change. And I think that that's one of the more exciting things about being alive right is change. And this show has been such a groundbreaking show for so many reasons, but especially with Netflix. It was the first show on the first big Netflix shows, I feel like got all the hype people binged. Yes, got everybody directed to Netflix streaming. Are you a big fan of of binging shows? Oh, yeah. I mean it start now to think of another way to do it. Right. Right. Like, it's I don't even I don't even know how to watch things. It's just going next. Right. Right. Like, you're you finish. You're gotta wait a whole week to watch. Like, I don't have that on my TV. I never use my only using smart TV. Do you? Do you watch game of thrones? You know, I did a little I'm very good friends with Peter Gingrich. I've really a big fan of Pete. She's really pretty spectacular. I have. I've watched a bit of it. I'm not a I feel like it's something that I'm going to retroactively enjoy. Yes saver. Yeah. On my own. That's one of those things. I now we're all waiting week to week. And it's like why you watch them at one have you are you major fans if you watched the entire we've watched it all, but we we didn't start from the beginning like where you know, the the phantom waiting to. We we've waited till the last couple of months binged really to seven. And now we're watching it because my goal was like I was like I wanna watch live with everybody for the last season. So what you like, I'm part of everything. Yeah. And then so bending was amazing. And then now our winter like, but so we got the good part of it. And now we're waiting. Yes. So how did you binge it? How did you watch seven seasons of his show? I watched it. Did you watch excited months? Like my mind. I'd space it out. And it took me. She just like watching episode at night like Yeah. yeah. Yeah. Here there. Did like but watch it for like weekends in a row. I did nothing but watch game of thrones on my couch. Right. And it was fantastic. I loved every satellite phone food watch game with thrones. Yeah. Repeat why those surveys are exactly what shows do you ought on on those services? I've recently been watching killing eve I finished it that was something that I hadn't I hadn't really binged anything for while fully just watch that all the way through and then the act we love the act. "Winter is here at least on HBO game of. Hit series. Aired the first of its six remaining episodes last night at his NPR. Tv critic Eric Diggins reports the highly anticipated season premiere was packed with uncomfortable reunions with massive implications for the story to come. And just a spoiler alert. This review is going to discuss many revelations from yesterday's episode game of thrones. Producers rewarded fan Sunday by reuniting characters. They've waited many seasons to see together again and a story that mimic. The show's very first episode in lots of telling ways in one scene when Peter Gingrich's Tyrian Lancaster approaches his ex wife so fi Turner sans start. We saw two characters meet who hadn't been together since the show's fourth season in twenty fourteen back, then Santa was naive. Young girl. Tyrian was trying to raise her spirits now long after she ran away from him Santa feels wiser sharper and smarter than both Tyrian and his sister slash enemy Sirsi who's promised to send troops to aid them in a coming war. Apologies leaving. Yes. It was a bit hard to explain why my wife lead moments for the kids meta survives. Underestimated you most of them dead. "Don't you looking at the field thinking where can we where we most likely to pick up awards? Let's move onto the Baptist end. The bath is the favourite had twelve nominations and then had a whole bunch of films like Roman stars born, which almost went home empty-handed from the Golden Globes. What do we make of that's to think this is a sort of harbinger of where the officers may go the Baptist tend to be a little bit closer to the IRS? Then the Golden Globes are with the caveat that British films and British talent do better in Britain. So they do tend to give away. Eating to sort of homegrown things. And since we appears to be categorizing, the favourite that way, the directors and British much of the production is then that would definitely be my favorite. If you will for the BAFTA. I don't think that's too controversial to say. I certainly think Olympic Coleman's the front runner and best actress at the Baptist. I don't know about the Oscars because there's some there's some wild cards in there. Somebody like going close. He's been overlooked six times Glenn Close has a big advantage when it comes to all time. But the bath is I think Coleman is is probably comfortably ahead, right? You can have a lead performance with less than an enormous screen time. Something like Anthony Hopkins and sons limes I actually don't disagree with because he dominates the film to such an extent arguably she has to do the same. She has to make more impact with her limited screen time for everyone else's actions to make sense. But, hey, listen, if it means a Sophie from show wins an Oscar, I'm all for it. Just couple of things in the and the Golden Globes, and this is a bit of a bugbear of ours of tickly on this podcast, and particularly thing for Helen. I given our our leanings, but it does shave my nipples every year when do board season, basically turns into well done movies. It came out in this very specific period. And you know, they thumbed their nose. Don't they at blockbuster's to not nominate Black Panther for costume and hair makeup? Just seems willfully. Ignorance in a way, doesn't it? It seems completely bonkers. Sanya is only up for special visual effects, which is one area. Where we didn't think excel. Genuinely think it's pretty polling isn't up for more. I'm really happy with the documentary nominees like say that at least that's good foreign film greats animated film. They gave Spiderman in spite of verse annoyed which is as it should be. So yeah, it's not so bad but over looking of Black Panther. I think is up pushes in general. I mean, we oversee an empire food Infinity war film of the year, and we talked on a review of the year podcast. I think it's you put them quiet place number one in because it's the best. You know, we we love him into the war. And but yet when it comes to this time of year, those movies are pooh-poohed Toni Collette hereditary nominal performance, even if you're snowbound horror films. I don't see how you overlook that. It just makes no sense to me do because they just don't watch the film. Business kind of sneering. Oh, we can't possibly Fords. What food from mission impossible fallout in this category or category? No, it's not a proper movie these are proper movies green book is proper movie blockbuster nonsense. That just really is a snootiness. Can we take any of these organizations seriously known that the overlooked Josh Gad for best supporting actor for pixels? Just a couple of years ago. You need to let picks please still trying to pixels happen, or oh, I don't know. Top my head Peter Gingrich for pixels for best supporting actor have appeared this year for vengeance. Infinity war. "Anyway, you couldn't really key out the legs it it had to be done, you know, frame by frame. Wow. I mean, there was another shot. Then I think it's partially in the trail or to where they're, you know, he writes, a trike to which I never, you know, who knows why it's like Peter Gingrich is dating Patricia Arquette, and he writes, a motorcycle, and then Gary Wright's strike, and there was a scene where they show up. It was a hotel out near your LAX where we were doing like this little people's of America convention, and they show up and Gary has to get off the trike and walk around and walk into frame, and they all they had a really good double for him. The the hair was perfect. It's face was very similar. You know, a little person double, and and there were debating how to do it my? So we'll let you why don't you just have him hide behind the trike Gary will step down, and then this guy walk around, and then we'll cut too. I mean, it was just again we were sort of making it up as we went along. And there wasn't a great deal of direction going on. It was like I said pretty. Pretty crazy set. Wow. I mean, one of the things I've been curious about because I still like I haven't actually seen it. We just been obsessed with this trailer. And and I've actually played this for like I played it for Sean Anders who directed instant family. That's out right now directed daddy's home when he was like, that's not a real thing. Right. And I was like what do you mean? He's like that trailer you were playing. That's not real I go. Yeah. It's real it's a real movie. And he was like no way. I even when I showed it to him. He was like this is not a gag. And I was like, no, no, no, this is real. So we were reading trivia. And like the first trivia point. That comes up says director Matthew bright was fired after he turned in his cut. The whole film was then re edited Peter Dinka JR. Has said the original director's cut which screened in Austin was gorgeous. But the people who fired bright ruin the movie. Do you know anything about that? I do I do. I. Quite a bit. Actually. I mean, I'm sure Peter includes has his opinion. I don't remember the whole original director's cut. I certainly saw you know, the re-cut. So they brought in this well-known editor Wendy, brick Mont who worked a lot with Ivan Reitman it's done a lot of bigger budget stuff. I had worked with her on another project before. And so they brought her in to try and find the movie, but you know, and that's always the case in the. But in this case, it was really sort of, you know, there was a lot of footage that I don't think had any bearing on. You know, the pro how how the movie needed to to go? And so I remember her talking about it like, yeah. This was it was a real challenge for her. But certainly the sensibility of Matthew bright was part of why everybody got involved. I'm sure, you know, I I don't know if you're where his his most famous movie is a movie called three way, it was Reese Witherspoon first movie. Yeah. She plays. She plays. A girl hitchhiking to her grandmother's house. That's right Kiefer Sutherland plays a character. Bob wounding ten you know, it's like this red riding hood saw this movie. I saw the crazy movie. And so that was sort of where he's established his reputation as being you know, sort of a little bit out there and doing interesting sort of cult kind of movies, but but they certainly I think they got off the rails pretty badly..

"Right. John would come in and meet with us for three hours right on a Monday, then three hours on Wednesday, then three hours on a Friday. And in that nine hours, we would get the entire season of the west wing done. Well, and by that point when you had met him he had ER under his belt. He I mean, look, he, you know, he had been long running Yar and put pro, but, but if again, like, it's this thing like, I don't quite know. How did that? Because in that three hours. We would not only talk about what's going on in the next nine episodes, generally. Right talk about what's going on in the next three app is so it's more specifically. But also every every meaning we'd have an outline coming in or a script coming in. And everyone in the win would have read it, and we all would sit around and give notes on that outline or script, which was it was like being in any sort of writer session. You know? I mean, my wife went to grad school in writing. And that's what they do. They sit around and they. They have a workshop, and it was like workshop, and these and and and John I mean, he never would kill himself to get a script like to if you came in with a D script, you know. It was not going to be an script. He'd make it. Sure. It would go up to letter grades to be. But he was not going to kill himself to get into a nice script was he realized you've got twenty two of these like, they're not all going to be a scripts and so every script went up to letter grades. So was progress versus perfection. Yeah. And but nonetheless like again, but when you look at that as a whole like I throw are seven season of the west wing up against the other seasons. You know? I mean, you know, no Aaron makes things dance specifically in the first and second seasons in ways that I don't think have really been replicated. I'm there why got into the business in some ways. Like, I was going to be in children's television than I saw the west wing. I was like, oh, he's having a conversation with the American public, and look how we'll conversation and that I mean, so Ahrends in some ways in many ways, the reason I write for film and television. And and and, but you know, but I do think like what we did in the seventh season. You know, John just you know, and it really is true testament to John storytelling ability in his ability to make, you know, make seven writers write the best. They can you know, obviously, we've talked about John we've talked about Spielberg Thomas McCarthy is a hero of mine. You who really mind? Yes. Co wrote spotlight together, which was an Oscar winner. I'm sure you guys. And I'm just curious what you gleaned from working with him. He just just as as. A little piece of trivia, the first screening I ever did in my series was the station agent. It's great every Thomas McCarthy and Bobby volume, Peter Gingrich. And it was it was a blast. And he's been in it for everything I've ever done. So what was the most important thing you gleaned from working with McCarthy even being a creative habit or writing habit or something you observed as director. Tommy. I've been very fortunate..

"Yes. Yes. We can we can add to that chorus. And thank you. Thank you for the very nice review. Michael. Thank you, Michael Nathan rights really enjoyed reading this book. It was actually surprised to learn how much about the things in the real world, many references. Were made to other cultures historical, events and religions led me to looking up other things and learning about history of the real world the insides and conjecture about Martin's world, we're also quite fun and inciteful. Thank you Nathan. If you want to be surprised by the quality of the book as much as it was you can purchase it now in in kindle or hard copy version on Amazon dot com today. And again that link is an show notes. Let's get onto the actual meets the actual content that people are here for Anthony. And you know, one of the features we debuted last last week in this kind of this special coverage of God's of thrones is deep dives in two specific characters last week. I chose Tyrian. If you missed that. You can listen to us talk about here in for over an hour today. We'll be talking about one Catlin stark an interesting choice. An interesting choice you made. I would say that if you listed a list of popular characters and game of thrones at Catlin would probably not be at tops of many people's list. That was that was a bold choice of yours. Well, I I mean, I like many people really enjoy aria and the hound and tearing, and you know, you can you can make a long list of cat is necessarily on my favorite list. Although I really do enjoy. Her in the books, but I think she's one of the more interesting characters. By by contrast. So she has one of the most interesting divergences in the two parallel galaxies of the books and the shows. So I thought that might might make an interesting conversation. Okay. Well, I want to get stark as I buy my right of not selecting the character this week. I get to challenge you to a trial by questioning, and I have selected five questions, and I'm going to get started right now. I I'm going to steal your move from last week and ask when you're reading a song of ice and fire. Do you see Michelle fairly the actress who played Catlin stark on TV show in your mind's eye? You know, it's funny because I was just we were saying last week that you know, it's impossible not to see Peter Gingrich when we're reading song now. But I think that I might I think it may be different for me when I'm reading cat. I think sometimes fairly slips in there in the my thought scape. But maybe because these characters seemed to have sort of different personalities or different motivations. I Mabel to keep them separate. But for whatever reason the answer is no, I don't think that I my default mental image of Catlin stark looks like the HBO actor. You know, I it's it's funny because I asked exact the exact same reason I was cleaning out your notes from last week. And I I was struck by Peter dinky thing, and I'm like you. And I you know, we both talked about how the cast of game of thrones is largely kind of overwritten. Our our minds is of what we saw the characters having before. And I got to say that I think cat stark is one of the few exceptions because I like Michelle Fairley, and I think she did a very good job as embodying the characters interior qualities..

All right. We have two more. I only remember what one of them are. But let's I'm going to go. Oh, cool. All right. We have game of thrones. Liz has never seen. I for some reason. And she probably did care for him because I don't see her ever marrying somebody. She really didn't like that much is clearly too strong willed for that. But yeah, her character was just fascinating. I really wish the show had been mostly about her. Yeah, because it was a thing where they marketed very much heavily on the female side of the characters in the female side of the story. But if you've watched the f- the the show, the first episode in half essentially is setting up what all the men do for even get to the women. So is like it's a little bit of Bain switch, but the performances in the vast majority of what they do is fantastic. And they still a lot of really sexist men in that show which felt. Really the opposite of what the promos were doing. You know like. So that's just something to know going into totally worth your time to watch. And that's how I framed it. Every time I talked to when I was like, there's a lot to know before you watch it so that you so you know what you're watching going, you don't feel cheated correct. And they also do with like the slavery angled posts, the slavery angle of the town outside of the town where all the slaves live and all that. So that was a very interesting thing as well. So Jeff Daniels also one for that, and he's as always fantastic. Is the bad guy in this Franklin of inured to so many amazing act like I feel like we're going to look back on this time twenty thirty years and be like God. Your remember when all these amazing people were just making all of these shows right up your alley because no matter what your alley is, probably twenty shows for it right now. So what else? Assassination of Johnny, which I did not watch what I've heard, fantastic things. I know basically nothing about it a so it's part of Ryan, Ryan Murphy's American crime story series, which is essentially every year that they do the series. It's based on a different notorious crime. The first one they did was on the o. j. Simpson murder, which was also really highly regarded this one also very highly regarded as well. One several wards Darren criss who is the main guy who plays the person who doesn't up murdering, Johnny, pretty fantastic. He won for lead actor, limited series of heard nothing but good things about that from the people that I know of watched it Regina king her from her her award was I think, kind of shocked people is in this series limited series on Netflix. It's called seven seconds. Peter Gingrich one for supporting actor. So let's talk about this. So supporting actor. We had just fines nominated and he did not win. Obviously, Peter drink. This is a. Another one where I just couldn't argue with anything that happened. Right? Because right because these people are all raising, they all do a fantastic job. And some of them were intro is I really, really love. And if the Handmaid's tale did not exist and I didn't know about some of the actors there, I would absolutely be reading for the people that one impeded English is always awesome, and he's always show and it's much crap is I give my wife about game of thrones and there's not necessarily fundamental things. I have an issue with one storyline last year, which I will not talk about anymore. It's a great show and it's well done well done. It's so well done from basically every this is a show. I literally did not want to like like, I tried to read the first book and I just could not get into it and everybody was talking about the show and I was like, okay, well, I'm just gonna watch like the pilot episode just so like I know what's going on enough that I can follow these conversations because all of my friends that were really into things that I like we're talking about the show and it hopefully sucked me in. It's just good. Is so good just is. The performances really lake. They are Scherzer so so well and Peterson glitch is just agree actor, all around does a lot of great work, and there's a lot of like really strong female characters in that shows..

And all my God. I was pulling I was praying praying they would come back and once again the second week in a row snatched the heart out of the fans for the Jacobin. I know I'm not I'm not a nice person. I'd really hoping they'd come back like Green Bay did last week. And just just shatter Chicago's hopes. But they didn't Chicago, prevail. Seattle's offense last night was as bad as the Emmys well for three quarters like the Emmy's. It was terrible and ten til Peter Dingley one. And then game of thrones one. You know, the big prize is horrible. I mean if that. If that's supposed to celebrate excellence in television. Good lord. Maybe the only one I know. But I just to enjoy television at a different level. No, I'm not going to start getting higher drinking again, I might start getting high drinking again for the reasons, but but not for that. I'm kidding. Nothing. Nothing will ever forced me to go back to that. Hell. It was terrible. Absolutely true. A sexist remarks. You know, he's a little pig. But. Or use a crossbow like he did with his dad was sitting on the can if don't watch it dad was sitting on a candidate was king. Dad was a. Dad was not a a good human being. And anyway, sitting on the cannon and tearing basically pinned him to the back of the toilet with a crossbow. Very very fitting in to the king. And in that case. Big enough. The king also a different king. Probably also spends a lot of time sitting on the can in tweeting. Donald trump. This could be the downfall of St. peers. I'm sure it's higher than thirty eight percent that it is statewide thirty eight percent approval rating statewide. Fifty four percent of new Mexicans thumbs down on the Trumpster. Get born to that. There are no polling today. Dumb. Now. I'm wondering if Sandra did not poll for the land commissioners, right? You all the polls we had yesterday. Today. Where's Emily? What happened? Emily? It's called hold on. It's called, it's called, it's called director. It's called a simple favor. He plays like like a friend who does makeovers I don't really. He wasn't that I wasn't that impressed with. The gay character. Right? He's just like they don't really give them anything. He's like, I'm like, they don't like me like all you can tell because I'm gay. And so I just do everything else that they asked me to, which is like get them dresses because like there's a whole makeover scene where she has to like presentable for the wedding. And of course, like he spearheads it with Aquafina. He's in. That's his big thing right now. Right? Yeah, he's really not in. That's kind of the main thing. Jimmy. I'm also small role, but kind of a big impact which is he plays the Bernard who is kind of the ostentatious like ringleader, like he's like the bro friend that like throws the bachelor party. And that's why it's so like grand and he's kind of. He is best known for being Jinyang and till the combat, which is a show a hate and still watch. Even though I really, I mean, I hate. I mean, I hate every single thing about valley launching it. They've let Jimmy do more ever since TJ Miller was fired or let go whatever the hell. He's fine. His character is like, I don't know. His character is really frustrating. They you feel bad for things. They make his character do, but they're giving his character more to ever since TJ Miller left. So he's like he's incredibly consequential. He's a very important character to the plot at the show. It just so happens at the plot of the show is really stupid and annoying and repetitive, but it's good that he's getting other roles because if you watch Silicon Valley, you'll understand. So he's getting more work, which is good. Okay, cool. So he's in and he's like, fine..
