"Radio and the ESPN app. Here's Jeremy chef there was the sad news Monday Memorial Day, that Bill Buckner the sixty nine year old former major leaguer who spent so many productive seasons with the dodgers and the cubs and the Red Sox winning batting title amassing more than twenty seven hundred career hits, and of course his role in game six of the nineteen eighty six World Series, perhaps the most famous infamous error in baseball history. No one knows, Bill Buckner story. No one can put it into better context. No one has a greater appreciation of his complete and full legacy than the manage on sust now the great baseball writer, Peter gammons. Peter. Thank you for joining us. Thank you charming. Now he was a really special player. I mean it's so sad to see most of the stories about his staff leading with. Well, he's famous for the air when hit remarkable career and made the two thousand seven hundred and fifteen hits but what gets overlooked little bit forgotten. Is he was a great young player with dodgers, 'cause she and Bobby Valentine were to one in the traff? The nineteen sixty eight there were supposed to be the best recruits on US's football team. But he, he tore up his ankle in April of nineteen seventy five and he never walked right again. I'm and back when he was with the Red Sox, and in eighty five eight four eighty five he I those days, I used to go out and go to ballpark and about one o'clock in the afternoon to dress and shag will be pee all the rest, and always astounded me was it was, it would take buck. The two hours to have this. To all the stuff ahead to do ankle, so they could play. And he plays in such pain for so much of this career. There's no question. He were shot. Well, past three thousand hits heady been healthy. And so at that time, though, we didn't have all the analytics, three thousand but you went to the hall of fame, and that injury costed the whole fame, but he's still had a great career and I mean that play with bookie Wilson. It's so it summed up his personality, which is. And I'm not the only one to say this. I know Bobby valentines always said he buys the most competitive person anyone who ever knew ever ever met and that ball so booking. Ray night at for bookie's as looking hits top Brown ball on first he has no chance to be able to get him out. But he sees the quarter of his is Bob Stanley is delayed on the mound. He's not going to get the first so tried to charge scoop it. And then die for the bag and of course, the ball would by a little bounce of hop whereby and Ray night scored. But it was his never I'm like the ball whole right night at third. I'm gonna make that play and got out of the city and it's just that's was what he's time where USC is they still win. And we're roommates at SE and 'cause they were they were in the I believe there in the football, dorm, or something like that. And they, they would go out and work out every day, but they would race every day Bobby Valentine 'cause fly he got hurt. I think he was playing fraternity football game where he messed up before what happened to him in the major leagues loss. Lot of speed I think so, but they would go out every time Valentine beat him every race they ever ran. But every. Time. Buck with a. All right. Well, we'll be back here tomorrow and this won't happen again. I'll be mile any believe it. And that's just the way he was. I mean, there was a time in the minor leagues when Buckner Valentine and David Lopes collided. I'll fly ball in short right-field. And so he hurt his jaw, and they took x rays of them. Two days later found have broken draw and already played two games of the broken jaw. So the dodgers told probably sorta as manager, don't play the sky for the month. He missed one dam was back in the lineup mortgage. Aw. And that's just who he was. I know if, if you sat Valentine down on the couch, you could probably tell hours of stories about all the crazy things he did as a as a competitor. But and he was it was. Yeah. Somebody said to me the other day. Is that your main members? No, you know what he came back to Boston nineteen ninety the Red Sox wanted to go you went to the angels, and then the royals and he came back here. Red Sox in nineteen ninety and I was sitting behind home plate with scout front of mine, and he was here bowl against the angels to write feel you know, that corner in right field, a fly ball over Florida washes head and the that's low fence and short hop that fence but clo- couldn't stop and over the over the fence and got stuck underneath the seat. And the ball rolled back and I sent to Gord liking my friend, sitting next to mess inside the park home runs. Oh, I said, I work up Dante Bichette, centerfield, just standing, there was arms cost watching those anybody to go and get the boat. What else still see for the list around the basis of dove across home plate for I believe it was his last hit in the major league in my, so that's my fun. This memory of -pecially is a matter of how torn up his ankle was, how old he was he sills voices way around the basis to score the run. We're speaking with the great Peter gammons about the great Bill Buckner who died this week at the age of sixty nine of Lewy body dementia, and, and Peter, I gotta say, I mean, I got to know Bill Buckner a little bit later life. We did stories on the twentieth anniversary of eighty six and the twenty fifth anniversary. He was so gracious. He was a man of so much honor and so much dignity. And he had if such a big reputation the game but I was surprised by just how big the reaction was dissuade to his death. And it's because it's such a rich story. It's such a poignant story, and, and there's something, of course, sad or unfortunate about such a great. Player associated with that moment in particular. How do you try to frame, the legacy of Bill Buckner? I thought that the fans in Boston very well when the Red Sox brought him back in two thousand eight there was over day. There were celebrating the championship of two thousand seven but out from the opening luck there, wall came Bill Buckner they introduced him and he came, he walked forward to for pro the first pitch and the ballpark's good. It was. Just a deafening applause for him. And he broke down and cried. He was coming in. And it was a tremendous way moment. I mean they were Bill Russell was there, probably, or was there, you know, Red Sox heroes from different periods. I think he asked us there. And, and but there was this moment of, you know, hey, you still he was so great for them for the two years. And, you know, the one thing that they would all say John McNamara was criticized for not from Dave Stapleton in first base. But, but there was so much a part of that eighty sixteen that came back and beat the angels. There were down three to one at one point, and that series and came back on the and, and then he was such a part of the World Series team that. Say wonderful, but there was something really special about Bill Buckner. And when you were around him in the clubhouse, at two thirty in the afternoon and listened to stories realize what he was like he was so much apart. Not gonna forever in my mind. Remember, it's doing the right thing because that was how much respect but there, have no matter what it was right Evans, or, or Jim rice, or whoever they he was regarded as just he, he has he has the presence of the great player, and they knew it was almost impossible for him to go out every day. I mean, people used to say how the world is guy go out and play in the field at first, but he played pretty well. And you know, it was just remember Dwight Evans one day saying somebody, it's, you know, some people have greater wills and other than he was one Peter gammons the hall of fame baseball writer on the gray. Bill Buckner died this week at the age of sixty nine Peter means a lot to us that you come on, and share your memories of Bill Buckner. Thank you for joining us. Thank you very much. I just wish he had those two hundred eighty five s and so we also we can Lincoln Clack Cooperstown? That's right. That's right. Peter gammons. Thanks, you're covering. I'm Jeremy shop, and you can listen to new editions of the sporting life, every Saturday and Sunday morning on ESPN radio and ESPN app, beginning at six AM eastern time..

"Jeffress manages to get it done and the Ruhr survive here they win and take a two one lead in the NFL CS. This is great to have one of the best at what he does. Peter gammons now working with the MLB network and also writing for the the athletes Peter just as we get going here. We're going to pick your brain center on what the giants are going to do you? Go back with Mr McGowan who kept baseball here in in the bay area. You guys went to college together is that where your friendship was formed grammar school grammar school. Okay. But and of course, he moved from New York to San Francisco the giants will sell that was appropriate. But I still amazing to me. Just building that ballpark. And remember why are used to low along the along the water there all the warehouses? The giants are today. And what they were when they were cameras sick park. It's tremendous. Is it is one of the chosen franchises in in in baseball. So I'm very happy and proud of what what Peter did. And you know, the legacy he'll have for the giants especially when the building around the ballpark. They might be the highest revenue team in baseball. Wow. What since since you brought up the ballpark. It's funny because the giants for the last two and a half years have been having a tough go of it. And it comes up all the time that well, you wanna bring in free agents hair, you're going to have to change the dimensions of the ballpark. So it's a little more hitter friendly and our comeback on our show. He normally as Mr McGowan thought he had a had a jewel there. And I just can't see Larry Baer doing that. What are your feelings on that ballpark? As far as would that scare indeed enough free agents to make you consider changing the dimensions. You might make it a little bit easier right field. I could see that otherwise on. It really helps to have a pitcher's ballpark. And I in the end that's gonna be what they'll stick say. They might you know, move your fence up in right field a little bit because we pounds in so much. I remember watching times guys are taking dining winds blowing. They'll they'll hit bombs in the balls will just just cut across the foul down the right field line. Maybe make some adjustment for that. But I don't think you want to change the nature of the ballpark, and it's such a beautiful place. And it didn't stop him for winning World Series and five years. So. I wouldn't I wouldn't mess. Too much for what a great thing and the girl advisor incredible. Peter gammons the hall of Famer with us on the guest line MLB network the athletic. Peter won the j g Taylor Spink award back in two thousand four and went into Cooperstown. Obviously, Peter a lot of people here were the giants flagship very excited and very eager to see what direction they're going to go with this executive search. What do you know about it as Larry Baer, and Brian Sapien conducting the interviews togethers? It just Larry in the name that came up today from Bob Nightingale, Peter was was air Zona senior VP a meal Assad. I and I may be offering that name. I'm L saw day Saturday fifteen years with Boston probably know him through. I do know very well two of the people that are in. On the L. Jason cloud the cubs. And there there were I think they were both tremendous Jason regionally was in San Diego and very close relationship with Bruce bocce, then one from Red Sox of scarring director and moved on conspires. You went to the agenda. And then that now is where the cubs yells lifetime Red Sox. And then moved to the cubs one Dave Dombrowski took over and he I'm meals terrific cases that both very heavily scouting oriented. They will scouting directors. I'm here. You replace Jason when you went to San Diego, and they really understand organizations. They've worked for really good organizations. Set up for the red socks over the cubs is still styles v his his understanding of what executives actually do and how you put together an organization, and my case is Arizona is an excellent is absolutely brilliant and commercial what he does. And they're all kind of the same school. You'll see a great deal of authority handed out truly organization, it'll be very scouting analytically oriented. So I I don't know who else will be in it. I think those two guys I in my mind, and as I say, I do know the poll very, well, you can't Mitchell. Either one Brian Savin will still have a pretty strong say with who's hired. And after after the gentleman are the woman has hired that saving. Will still be a focal point of this franchise. Absolutely. Because his ability to evaluate towel make tough decisions. Yeah. I don't think that. Either one is going to come in and just blow things up. I mean, plenty saving deserves respect. For for what he's done in the game. And what is up with the giants and go all the way back to being the scouting director, the anti. So I mean, he's always been a guy that the people are intensely loyal to. Yeah. I think he worked very what would you know, even ballpark? They all work very well together. They I also know how much. That just because of the nature boy feel built the Red Sox organization. They will rely heavily on his opinion. I mean, that's so that won't scare anybody away that they come in here. And jeez, I've got my own ideas. But I'm gonna have Brian looking over my shoulder. No, you know. I mean, it's one of the things that, you know, you don't get in politics because that's so well, there's very little business, understanding and and. Allotment of duty. But I mean, it's knowing both AVI L and. And chasing the clouds. They're the type of people who want people to disagree with them. You know, it's the elections always believed that Ian, Kurdish people to disagree with them. Because as ABRAHAM LINCOLN said if I if I'm proves that I'm wrong. I know I'm smarter than. Okay. I think. Always said, I mean, all I could just be shaving in the morning. And know what I think it's great to get other opinions. They all come out with that same school and McLeod is considered to be a star young evaluator a lot of people feel like you wouldn't leave the city of Chicago income west. Do you think he this would be a viable option? You think I know all these guys would love to be the guy. Right. The GM or the head of baseball operations. But he's been with THEO so many turns do you think you've leave THEO to come out here? He left him to go to the same Yego, Jack Royer and essentially Cisco I mean, no San Francisco Giants for like green job to make sure you get some help paying your pay for your house. But it's it's it is a green place. I mean, I there's somebody, you know. Larry baer. I mean, I would say say David forced what would it take move across town because I think David is absolutely duly personally. Great to. So I know he's not leaving San Francisco, Peter how about some of these other names Qiming? His name has been thrown out kind bloom. Matt Arnold from. I believe Milwaukee was number two. I've heard I've heard a lot of metal or no he was with. Tampa Bay worked under Andrew Friedman. Maybe it's a pro scouting director there and very good. And he went to Milwaukee, I think David Stearns is really bright really tremendous young general manager, and that's been really important for him. And I you know, it's a. I've been interested in the names that have been thrown out. I figured if they'd be heard and some of the ones that I know of interview like Matt and Jason and on the L to me the process is is highly intelligent highly educated processing, Larry clearly knows what he's doing. And and what he's looking for. And so confidence in this again. Sure. Giants. I mean, that's that's we were the east coast bias sometimes sold. Appreciate how incredible it is to be to be there in San Francisco. Have you up from there? Yeah. I understand Peter gammons hall of Famer a handsome Yulon's I saw his interviewing with for the twins manager job. And I just read this morning. David bells gonna gonna head out to Texas to interview for the Rangers managerial opening either six that I know of Texas Minnesota Cincinnati the Mets the angels Toronto maybe seven Baltimore as well. What what's the most attractive of the managerial openings to you? I think it will be Toronto. Because I think that there's they once the Rogers people own TV network in the stadium and everything understand that. It's really great when you win and you spend a little money to win. I I think that ended up a great job because it's a it's a national team. We'll get some great deal of attention. And you don't get the day to day criticism. And you know. Picking this situ get in if you're in an east coast, or you know, if you're in New York Philadelphia Boston someplace like that. I think it's gonna be a really really good job. I just don't see Baltimore ever really functioning. I think the Mets. That's a really rough it. I don't think they can figure out who the general manager. The Orioles can either. I mean, I that's there. So discombobulated in the leadership up top ownership on down and both so dysfunctional. I I don't think either one works. I think Texas can be very good because John Daniels passes has really run company. Well, I think the money is there the way it was. But they got the new ballpark coming up in a couple of years. I think that that will end up being a really good job as well. Yeah. Real quick couple more for Peter gammons. If you're the giants general manager, and they've got a lot of holes to fill would you be able to pull the trigger on a Bumgarner trade and probably more to the point where there be big interest in him. If indeed he wanted twenty five thirty million if he wanted Kershaw money. I think they would be there. Just because those pictures are so rare. I mean, you've got. Very interesting because Kershaw can opt out this winter sale can opt out next year. Great out. If you have one or two of those guys on your staff can really work. I mean Houston wins the World Series. I mean, it was worth going out and getting Garrett Cole because you've got Burland cold together. You. But if you're the giants could you pull the trigger on him? I think I might if if you can't if I went in there and. Cited you know, what we were aging Yulon boss if you can get two young pitchers and to every day young everyday players position players. I think that's the place. You have to start over again. You could make that kind of deal and we've seen the Bumgarner dot com pitcher so and in the American League when he doesn't pitching D H, Peter will we'll let you go Peter, but we got two great games today. Red Sox Astros Milwaukee and the dodgers game three for Boston Houston game four. And then in the National League, give me your thoughts quickly on this on the C on these two series evolved. He goes today against Kyko. And he evolved the knows it using the four seamer a lot lot more in the last month. And Kyko has some bad numbers against Boston. What give it give us a thought or two on Boston in Houston in Milwaukee in the dodgers? I think I think. All the. Rush lack of a better chance in this series. I ever thought at the beginning and. Dave comes over to collusion. We're just not gonna pitch to break. They did once in the came within like a. A millimeter hitting the ball out and stayed pretty good successful Keiko. Houston's bullpens a little bit better. But the Red Sox with Barnes. And of course, Priscilla came in to every every curb true for strike and Barnes through what fifteen pitches fourteen curve walls. They've got a bullpen Nicotrol live breaking balls and have done pretty good job holding them down. This is really interesting. I think this game is absolutely typical game. I think it I'm not sure what you expect in game. I expect persona the pitch six really good innings, which I really don't know. What Charlie Morton is gonna do. I think this is a critical game for Houston. And I think obviously this is extremely critical game to the dodgers because unless they could stop trying to hit I know that they've creatures in the minor leagues. The launch angle. They're trying to hit home runs on every pitch quality, bats. And they have not been that mysterious and they're gonna pay for the way they're they're developed if if they ended up losing the series. All right, Peter. Thank you very much. Okay. Thank you. That's Peter game. Hey, Jim Barnett is coming up. We'll get ready to warriors open their seasons tonight does not appear as if Russell Westbrook will play for Oklahoma City. That's straight ahead on these sports on KNB are six eighty the sports leader. Arron.

"What you do you get paid for qb one for your high school is that what you were did you play quarterback for ya but it was single wing so it was are you serious and innovated yeah how many temps did you have any pass attempts the halfback at all those you know those guys got i ran the quarterback i was called the quarterback but i ran the quarterback sneak and that's where you know a lot kind of jinchi guy to jake and but i got hurt i got hurt badly and both knees on the same play and michael irvin wants by the way both of them yeah and one was more severe than the other so luckily my father who is a pre med student at stanford but had to quit because pression and go take care of his parents farm knew a little bit more than i did and so the operations back then were severe i imagine and we're not talking to twenties or thirties the fifties right he's looking at me like maybe not at all i almost have brockman this is for you and so they ready he had me take up golf to strengthen the meniscus and the potala and so i did that and how how good your game so you just roy i would love to by the way if you're actually inviting me okay it gretzky mr gretzky ninety nine comply with it is that right plus one over here how no hold on now now let's so you you you play with gretzky i mean that's what you're played a little with chris yeah okay yeah he's good great guy great guy i mean he's he's an old world guy yeah you're playing with a legend okay so what's who would you get for the foursome who do you wanna play with you tell me let's go through the cray tina johnson rolodex i don't want to give you too many big names.
