"pete rose" Discussed on GSMC Baseball Podcast
"With you all and in our first segment I got things rolling discussing the game recaps from Friday September eighteenth things are starting to get very in the MLB a lot of really good games that evening and with some playoff racist starting to heat up as we get closer to October this season's going to have a very interesting finish to it be stick around for the final. Few minutes of the show today as I will discuss one of the more popular topics in baseball whether or not pete rose should be in the hall of fame a really good discussion. So stick around for that one. Later on in the show, I want to get into some of the most improved players this year and which players have really turned their season around an in a matter of weeks at that and a couple. Of names you're going to be shocked at because you know they're usually starts the studied players and players that we hear quite a bit about, and so it's going to be a little alarming at first when I mentioned some of these guys what some of these players, they really had a tough first couple of weeks top first couple of games at that. So the first guy I want to mention from the Chicago. White. SOx. Tim Anderson he's the reigning batting champion in the AL had a rough first few games of the season. His average dipped well below two hundred to start the year, which is very uncharacteristic of a player of his caliber with his ability as a hitter to see the average you know go that low however, he did have a very quick turnaround as average quickly climbed above the three hundred mark within the next few games now, Anderson. Had A huge year last year and to the life of me I don't understand how he didn't make the All star team. He led the League with a three thirty five batting average and also had career highs in hits with one, hundred, sixty, seven, and in doubles with thirty two. So the guy can clearly hit without question his performance in September has been the best baseball he's played all season long in the first fourteen. Games of the month of September, he was only Hitless in two of them and with his team just recently clinching their first playoff spots since two thousand and eight I. Think we will hear a lot more about Tim Anderson and honestly for a guy that is you know one of the best is on one of the best teams in baseball this year it's shocking. We don't hear a ton about him. We definitely do hear about. Him Nothing. We never hear about him but I think that Jose gets a lot of attention and rightfully. So but I think that Anderson will start to gain more and more attention with them being in the playoffs in everyone being able to watch their games. They'll see how good Anderson really is. He definitely had a rocky start to the season, but he finally got a rhythm and he hasn't looked back since and I think. That this white sox team is going to really benefit from having him on their team and in their lineup because he's got a great bat and going into these playoffs that's going to be crucial for their team. Next guy that I wanNA mention from the Elliot Angels Anthony Down. Now don't season has been a little bit more of a struggle. The Anderson's Manley because random didn't catch fire until the later the latter part of August. When don't start to the season hitting three thirty three after the first game. So the first game in an angels uniform off to a great start but that quickly dropped to below his average dropped below two hundred as he was two hundred or below all the way up until the middle part of August when he finally broke through that barrier and was able to hit higher than two hundred, he also only had four home. Runs through the first fifteen games or so which again is an awful considering that the season was going to be shorten anyways. But for a guy who hit thirty four homers last year and hit three nineteen on the year I mean you had a career season in Washington he definitely did not start his career with the angels on the right foot at all but he did turn things around thanks in part to a fourteen. Game hitting streak right in the middle of August, and all of a sudden has averaged from well below two hundred, two now batting three, twenty, six at that point in over one hundred point increase that is very impressive and that's really hard to do. In the MLB. He's now starting to flatten out a little bit as he went into September hitting a little below three hundred. He's now hitting two, seventy seven but he was. Able to bring the PS up above one thousand after having his opium drop to as low as five sixty nine. So the fact that that is back up to above his opiates as back up above nine hundred that's a great signed for him in the angels moving forward because he will be in L. A. for quite some time signing a huge contract with one of the biggest season acquisitions by any team and although this team. Will, not. Make the playoffs they're to really love having down in the city of angels because he can hit and although he showed he can really slump. He has also shown can turn things around and he is capable of turning up the notch a little bit and is able to improve his play. That's a great sign that he can bring himself out of a slump and make a quick turnaround. No question about it he's. been a really nice bright spot for the angels and who knows you know in the next two or three years if they add certain players in certain pieces that they need to, you know he could be the the main focal point him and trout on this team. We could see them possibly in the postseason I. Really do think that next guy another guy from the Chicago White Sox Jose Abreu Abrego has had an up and. Down Year starting off pretty rough, and then turn it around some, and then he was somewhat mediocre for part of August. But then as of recently I mean he has been going off from the plate through the first four games. He was hitting no higher than two thirty five and for a back to back all star the last two seasons to enter the season hitting near them in does align there's never a good way. To get the season started, he was able to bring it up a little bit to as high as to ninety five in early. August. Before dip back down to under two fifty. So a lot of up and down, very hot and cold year for Jose Abreu. But then the latter part of August happened and he's been on an absolute tear ever since his average has been well above three hundred since about August eighteenth and the. Has Been through the roof as well, which has explained why he leaves the MLB in Rbi's this year with fifty one and he leads the the MLB sixty eight hits and with at as well as he has two hundred and five at bats. So a guy that is clearly doing a lot of damage from the plate and again. If you think about it I, mean you've got Tim Anderson who I just mentioned and got Jose Abreu you. They've got Eloi Jimenez and Louis Robert I mean he's I mean he's been struggling a little bit lately but you know everybody's saying that he's and he is a very good baseball player but I mean this white sox team is dangerous. He's I. mean. Brave a very vital part to this white sox lineup, his batting average actually a career high for him right now, as he's sitting right at three, thirty two and the opium is above one thousand for the first time in his career as well and with playoffs nearing and and like I mentioned the White Sox clinching a playoff spot, we're going to see. Much more of a break in the fall time and to.
Dodgers complete deal for Betts, Price
"Hairston junior of course former major league player world champion with the Yankees And of course the dodgers address analysts for Spectral Sports Net L. A. Jerry. Welcome to the PODCAST. How you doing very well very well? Yes on in Wednesday afternoon four o'clock eastern time. The big press conference at Dodger Stadium. Yes mookie Betts and David price coming to Los Angeles. I know you got to like train and your thoughts. I'm extremely excited. You know the dodgers the last few years. I've put themselves in position to possibly win a world series. It hasn't happened but I really believe adding guy like Mookie Betts in my opinion five baseball ballplayer all in all the major leagues. Excellent top of the order hitter. You know I think this is. He's kind of like the generations. Ricky Henderson excellent speed is they're gonNA NOT GONNA steal a hundred thirty basis because nobody does that anymore really. Nobody did that with ricky played But he gives you speed at the top power A great outfielder in right field. And you put him in the lineup with next month cody bellinger Justin Turner And so on and so forth this is arguably the best lineup and all of baseball and then add to This dodge rotation healthy David Price. Who Brings in championship type pedigree and I really believe? He's GonNa be pitching with a chip on his shoulder. I'm having something to prove the season so I'm excited for the dodgers and the city of La. Jerry dodgers needed a good right handed bat. That lineup is loaded with lefties. This bets bets is going to help that isn't he. Absolutely you know anytime you get a chance to Have the best players in all of baseball. And you're on your lineup. She'd He'd be in your lineup. It's GONNA help but you're always looking for balance and you know like you mentioned. The dodgers were heavy left handed The last two years with Jock Petersen Jason Cory seager cody bellinger Max money. There's nothing wrong with having left handed power but you WANNA kinda offset that a little bit especially with the emergence of Gavin Luxa the new Start second base going to the dodgers have. He's a left handed batter. So you WanNa make sure you balanced when you're facing writings and left these Throughout the season the playoffs so why not not get arguably the best right handed hitting outfielder outside of my trout in base going. That's looking back and Jerry. You don't look at this as as has some sort of rental you don't make a trade for guy player like Mookie Betts and not be willing to sign this guy who can be a free agent. After next year you fully the expect. The dodgers to ante up and paid has got to be a dodger for a long time. Don't you absolutely I liken this to like an Anthony Davis you you know you. Trade for Anthony Davis get him in the fold let them see. La Let him be Laker and see how great it is to be living in La very similar with mookie Betts. You get him over here here. Let them play in this ballpark. Be a dodger Every day Get accustomed to you know the lifestyle. LA which. Really second to none. Being in the bright lights of Hollywood. I I think he's going to love it here and WanNa sign back and certainly. The dodgers have the resources to sign a guy like me or about so. Hopefully he's comfortable here which I think he will be. And we'll love to play here because everybody played here including myself has a loved. But I'm not putting on that dodger. Blue Guess on inside the park a podcast is of course Jerry Hairston junior former major league player and analyst for the dodgers in their TV broadcasts The other part is MOOKIE BETTS AND PRICE COM from Boston and they're under a cloud of suspicion. They're under investigation for what went down with their ex manager. Now Alex Cora and the dodgers chargers got a bronco event they lost in the world series in two thousand eighteen to the red sox. Where do you make of that? Where Mookie Betts and David Price could possibly be implemented uh implicated and talk about that they took part in what could wind up being yet? Another cheating scandal baseball. Well you know what I've heard it. You know before the the commissioner ruled on the Astros. We'd heard rumblings for a couple of weeks. What was coming down the road and we knew it was pretty pretty bad We know that the commission she's GonNa ruin the red SOx pretty pretty quickly. That's what we're hearing And we've also heard it's not nearly as bad as the Astros so I'm kind of banking on that anytime you play a team in the world series and the Super Bowl or the or the NBA finals. You WanNa make sure both sides are on the up and up. And I'm hoping that was the case with the with the Red Sox I'm hoping Alex Cora bidding implement everything that he has with Houston in Boston but that's yet to be seen But you know now that is the guys like Bats and David Price on the fold You gotta wait and see. I'm hoping they weren't a part of it. Obviously David price being a pitcher. Sure certainly wasn't that part of it because it was on the offensive side of the ball. And I'm hoping mookie wasn't in wasn't a part of that as well so that's got to be seen Bob Open for the good in
Mark Gastineau wants his single-season sack record back
"Sack success for more casting mark Gastineau it's something that he certainly had of the NFL well the single season sack record from nineteen eighty four until two thousand one and now after keeping quiet for eighteen years he's speaking out the former jet says the single season mark should belong to him and not hall of Famer Michael Strahan destino had twenty two sacks of the nineteen eighty four season stray hand broke that mark in two thousand one against the Packers when quarterback Brett farb seem to take a dive which gave straight and twenty two and a half sacks destino was on hand he graduated strain on the field and hasn't really said anything negative about it until now Gastineau saying nothing against farmer straight and he just wants to be recognized for the record and he's surprised the NFL didn't step in what happened ESPN's ridge so many mark why now it's been eighteen years it happened and he said that you know he's sixty three years old you know you realize he's he is battling H. you know like a lot of us when we get the you know you start putting life perspective it is also had a lot of health issues I don't know if the listeners know what the market's been battling colon cancer is tested for about a year he's battled colon yeah his prognosis looks pretty good right now but he still going for additional follow up tests so I think that coupled with his age may of change things for him a little bit looking at things a little bit differently and he just wants to come out and and he feels like that should be his record any once the recognition he wants people to know that that should be his record I don't disagree with them but rich you you spoke with do you think that he understands that it's not going to be overturned at it that's not going to happen yeah I think you know that you know and I think it actually by the way we should mention that also Jared Allen former Minnesota Viking ingested Houston former Kansas City Chiefs also had twenty two stacked up to a tie with gas to know who did it in nineteen eighty four I think so and security and of course with twenty two and a half and yeah I mean they're never going to change the one little side note a friend of mine the NFL statistician he works games for an NFL team reached out to me and showed me the actual rules that statisticians go by with you know assigning sacks and technically that should not have been recorded as a staff it was no attempt to make a pass on that place so it really should have been ruled like a minus yardage for a rush and not a sack the thing is neither team the Packers or the giants filed a protest at the time so when in the book as a stack but really at the statistician pointed out by the letter of the law it should not have been a sack what is Michael Strahan has here and said anything about this yeah you know that's a really good question of the five years ago six years ago he did NFL life like it was on him you know the NFL network those those documentaries and that came up in the and I were and I re watched it and he was really candid about it and he talked about all the anguish that record has cost him because he's been teased about it and people say well as an asterisk next to it because that check last sack with a cheap one it really giving so he really opened up as to really how much you know like I said English it cost him and I know from talking to Gastineau eight which is somebody would break it I mean someone with disco pass them both and break it cleanly that way this whole issue dies and I know from watching that video with straight hair he two wishes someone would break it just to remove the shadow we circumstances that it happened first Reagan national saying he was also inspired after hearing a recent interview with Pete rose in gas and says that like rose he's trying to get what is rightfully

Did cheating help Astros win World Series? Hinch says we may never know
"Aj hinch and the interview. He did finally breaking his silence of the disgraced astros manager who was fired in the wake of the breaking story in major league. Next glad you said that the ask the disgraced astros manager he was not. There's nothing else to call him. He's a disgrace Astros manager He was caught up up in the science. Dealing Scandal of the Astros didn't do enough to stop it and the first thing rob Manfred did was announced his suspension for Major League Baseball and then a couple allows later. The Astros fired him. You mentioned the interview he did. It's going to air tonight. And he was asked. Does this championship that you wanted. Twenty Lee seventeen. Is it tainted by this new scandal. Unfortunately we open that door as a group in that question I may never be answered. We may never know we're going to have to live and move forward and be be better better in the sport but unfortunately no one can really answer. Threw that question. I I can't pinpoint what advantages or what what happened. Or what. Exactly what happened otherwise but we did it to ourselves. Okay wait I can answer. It had had a lot to do. Look at the home road. Splits of all your headers like Jose Altuve. Have you see our relay race. Home and road splits dislike. It's like four twenty at home one twenty on the road and you remember if correctly that was when they remember lost the Games in New York to the Yankees remember the laws and then at home the they won all games. I mean it was an if I'm a dodger fan. I'm salty as well 2017. MLB CHAMPION DOC. There are two parades coming twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen and then back to back. Alex Cora takes that same show on the road and same thing. I I asked we. We know of this movie Bets trae goes through. You know as as Alex Cora cheated to be named later. Is that a part of the look at you know. I think that was the penalty. Not was the red sox train. mookie Betts to the padres and they said No. No you gotta make amends and trading with the dodgers all right shoulder dodger you owe the dodgers at Aj Aj hinch clearly is in that mode all of us do this in our lives. Whenever something bad happens did the interview though he could he could run and hide for year and not be heard from? I think it's better when you get out in front of it. But is he getting out in front of my saying. I don't know what kind of impact this had. Clearly when you're batters know what's it's coming. It's a lot easier when you go to that length of we're putting in electronic sign stealing system and you play the. I'm only the manager card. I couldn't stop this. No one believes please. You know either. The point where he's at the point in his life and all of us do this right when something happens in our lives. It's bad that we're responsible for. What do we try to do at some point? We try rationalize why it happened. And it's not really our fault. Aj hinch is at this point where who knows what he's GonNa do in baseball again. He's going to manage again. Maybe a couple years somewhere where. I'm not quite sure that he's at that point. where I need to reconcile with myself because I am a world series champion and I'm not going to walk around every day going it was tainted? So I'm I'm GonNa convince myself that I don't know what kind of impact this had altuve as still had to hit the baseball even though he knew what was the old PD argument. So He's in that point of denial. where I'm going is still WANNA walk around and not just feel crappy every day that we won and we won by cheating? So I'm GonNa convince myself that I don't know what we we did. Any act on the game only problem is I get it if you told me that one every game at home then win every game at home even with the cheating scandal. Whoa with knowing what's coming? So that's the part that makes it hard that's why you can't go automatically and say well we should just turn championship over to the dodgers not that the dodgers. aww their fans would want it that way but they didn't win every game using that cheating system so okay so they won three quarters of their. But I'm just saying when eighty percent of they're games that that's the only reason and this could have It doesn't mean that Wa. The team couldn't have beaten them at some point. All I'm saying is I get it cheating. Cheating it helps them. I'm not denying that but it's a reason why you can't take the championship and I don't think that that will work for majorly based on you can easily take like the championship. And you can not awarded to anybody. Say No year but Rob Manfred and look rob Manfred and Adam. Silver are two of the new age commissioners which they they WANNA do nothing they want to do nothing but in grow the game and have great reputations right Adam silver wants to do a little bit less than Rob Manfred but rob Manfred I guarantee aren t you. He thought I'm taking care of this. Here's a suspension for hinch. Here's bench for Jeff Luna. I'm taking care of it and instead what happened. Was it mushroomed out of control to the point. Where an hour an hour after this broke? What was the biggest topic online? Put Pete Rose in the hall of fame. 'cause you're not taking care cheaters enough. This got completely out of control because Manfred doesn't WanNa be the guy where the first line of his wikipedia pages rob Manfred who presided over. MLB taking a world series away from a team for the first time Blah Blah Blah. Aw that would be his legacy. He wasn't going to do it he wasn't going to be the guy to say you're going to look back at my my rain and it's GonNa be pace of play but mainly it's going to be. He took look world series away. He presided over a dark time in major league baseball. He wasn't going to be that guy. I'm not gonNA wear it so I'm GonNa have this suspension and then whatever happens after it gets out of my control and I don't care that's why he didn't do anything. Yeah I I just I never been into it. Even college used to do it and the Olympics and taken away medals and stuff that we watched watched to tell me that Reggie Bush wasn't the heisman trophy winner. You know you could tell me that all you want but I watched that season. Do you know what I mean. So I'm not fully the Internet. I don't think that changes anything. That doesn't take their memory away from me. I think you've just got a penalize the organization but I I'm not into taking championships
"pete rose" Discussed on The Steve Warne Project - Sports
"Rb Computing Web bowl for today at Jimmy? Jam Should Pete Rose be reinstated. Now Pete Rose is filed for reinstatement statement to Major League baseball because of the handling of the Astros signed stealing scandal is that opened the door pete rose to be reinstated and thus be considered for the hall of fame. Does it change anything at all. Basically Pete Rose's stepping up today and saying to Major League Baseball. Hey Hey you're not banning them for life. Why am I banned for life right right so you know? Maybe the guy doesn't have a point I guess. But here's the thing with Pete rose it has been so long now and so much in the news about this every year it comes up every year at some point in the year it comes up about Pete Rose Somehow someway a you know someone breaks a record or his base stealing deal or whatever and it always comes up and everyone says the same thing. No No. You're not getting in if they put him in. Now though. Steve if you were Pete rose would you really want to be put in there now and and so he gets put in this year and and then everyone who walks through the hall of fame. Everyone's GonNa Walk to but let me tell you about. PM Rolls Okay. His He needs an open heroes. Okay so I say if I don't WanNa go in there. I think the reason it won't happen. Is that think about it for a SEC. Pete rose is asking for. Reinstatement the Major League Baseball. And he's basically saying that because of Major League Baseball's dumb decision to not ban all the Houston Houston Astros for life. The way they did. Pete rose therefore I should not be banned for life. Or you're asking Major League baseball to do. There is admit that the astro punishment I was dumb. Major League. Baseball is GONNA do that like if Pete Rose has any hope of this. Don't deal with Major League Baseball. The only way he can get this done I think a court of law. Yeah well maybe on the other hand you know the guy has a point guys appoint. I just don't think Major League Baseball is gonNA listen to it. Well there's certainly going to do it right away. That's for sure. But someone's GonNa come in you know what we've got an issue here. I will say this I think Pete rose. I'm definitely understanding why he's doing doing this. I just don't think you'll have any legs stand on with Major League Baseball. Yeah and and Pete. Rose's infraction was betting on sports betting on baseball. All and to me that leaves open a whole massive can of worms. That's that to me is worse than cheating. I think so too. cheaters are trying to win. That's right that's the that's the deal I've always had with Pete. Rose it goes. Well I bet I only bet on our team did you really. Did you really. Who knows right and it doesn't matter either? The only way that that would have any legs is if he bet on his team every single game of his managerial career. Otherwise what are you telling the betting community dirty on the days. You don't bet on your team even if you're betting on your own team to win by twenty runs I every single time it's still the optics are horrible. And you can't have it. And and every major sport has to clamp down on it and throw the book at Major League Baseball did regardless of what happened with the Houston Astros and regardless of what. The decision was in the punishment. I don't blame baseball for keeping their heels dug in So some of the feedback we got on this poll meltdown. Radio Radio Meltdowns. CKC You Charlie. Hustle is eight dollar haircut. They belong in Cooperstown set. Says it's a bad haircut Well it's not hair. Jim Set writes yes. Do you want to elaborate on that at all Jim bus driver Bruce Russillo one writes yeah. It's been long enough but do it with an asterisk just like the steroid guys put them all in be done with it. Aroma bean rights rose should be in the hall with a big asterisk beside his name for why he's banned from baseball the MLB screwed up the chance to send a message to all the cheaters. Their punishment of the Astros rose is a joke. Their championship should be voided and have asterisks everywhere. He likes the asterisks. You can't do that if you start doing that. Steve is like Jim Jerome in the hall of fame although he was four hundred home run home run shy and a bunch of wins short of it. So we'll put a little star beside him but we're GONNA put them in villains. Just put it in a house of villains at the hall and then just be like should we go in there. Oh kids away from come away from there while he probably the most popular popular place at Cooperstown if you had a hall of villains or how civilians whatever hockey lobster rights put them in the hall already snipe and Chirp if the Astros can keep their championships ships. I don't see how they cannot reinstate him and Sean Blackburn writes he needs to be in the hall. Rose is a great story in the Major League Baseball history straight. Thank you for all your feedback today. Ladies and gentlemen but will the Astros get to keep their championship. We don't know yet. Thank roses thing is have been no players who've been banned for life out of this whole thing even though they've been some really really guilty party us again. I really do you want to go in now. And everyone's going to fucking cheater. The Web Paul is presented by RB computing..
National signing day tracker: Updates, news
"That today's national signing day but it's kind of the second national signing day there's an early signing period and for a bigger power five type schools most of the work gets done during the early signing period but one player who does sign with Wisconsin date J. one burger he has a running back out of it New Jersey he is considered a four star recruit and consider the fact that Jonathan Taylor left the badgers don't be surprised if this guy does something for a Wisconsin sooner than later Bucks basketball yesterday they were able to pick up a win against the pelicans one twenty one await yada says his fourth straight game with at least thirty points and fifteen rebounds yet thirty four and seventeen it yesterday tomorrow the host the Philadelphia seventy Sixers why have the game a rematch of that Christmas day game or the box got beat up pretty good and in baseball a huge trade the Dodgers get Mookie Betts Aaron David price from Boston Red Sox Dodgers very much look like the favorite in the National League one other baseball note John Pete rose is once again asking commissioner rob Manfred to take him off the ineligible list the argument is trying to make is the players who were involved in the Astros cheating scandal were not punished so therefore kind of retro actively he should be punished for what he did and he should be eligible for the
Former Wells Fargo CEO banned from banking industry for life
"Duggar like Pete rose the former CEO of Wells Fargo is been banned for life but from the banking industry the office of the comptroller of the currency find John Stumpf seventeen and a half million dollars in civil penalties and is seeking other penalties against other former executives to it's all fallout from that scandal that saw workers pressure to open phony accounts to meet
"pete rose" Discussed on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
"ESPN radio interesting. Back and forth between Durell Rivas and and Richard Sherman. I don't know why anyone would ever go after Richard Sherman on anything because he's going to scorch you. There isn't going to be a lot. aww retort so Durell. Rivas is basically saying the only criticism that anyone can file with Richard Sherman which is that he often is a scheme corner as opposed to playing man to man that he doesn't Trail number one receiver all over the place that he plays on on his side and Durrell Rivas showed him getting beat by Davante Adams in the game on Sunday and Durrell Rivas basically criticized Richard Sherman as a scheme guy. Richard Sherman's respond on top of correcting Durell. Revisit spelling he was saying you didn't look just like me in your ninth year. Your ninth. Year didn't look like my ninth year and also enjoy the game from from your couch and Durrell Rivas. The most surprising thing about it to me was as one of the great sports mercenaries of our time his Sunday television set up is pretty weak into it. Looks like a dorm room from a college college student. That doesn't have any money GONNA say it looks like my living room and I just moved into my house. Maybe going for that though. I mean he's going for college. Broke College dorm student. Yeah just like you know hanging around all the guys these coughing right my mouth. And I mean Greg Cody has been caught. You know both go to therapy. Just go to the therapy couch. Both of you. I mean cody is. He Cost Twenty seven times. It's Ryan stifle it. And then STU gods stugatz turns around and blames him. Blames Cody in fact that is two dollars. Planes Cody for the I. Four the phlegm in his throat. When you mean it's a fact that Greg Cody coughing caused you to have flim and Gurgle it into into the microphone directly in my mouth? Both of you get Outta here. Take your time fellas like this is punishment it over there waving Mike. How much did you enjoy the reverse and Sherman back and forth? Well I loved it because they both made amazing points. I think Reba is absolutely right in. Maybe you look. There's a reason why everybody does it. And historically Pete Carroll's add grape production from quarterbacks that whenever they leave that system they hadn't really done well up until until now what Richard Sherman doing thirty one years old often Achilles injury which is usually a death sentence for athletes and other scientists starting to get better there but at a thirty thirty one at an age of thirty one off an Achilles injury to lead another team defensively to a super bowl. It's really great and you don't really have a good comeback occur. Yeah my year nine look a lot better than yours. It's a hater criticism. Though to take the one time he gets beaten the game that they're willing winning by a million points and two point doubt from your couch while you're not playing in your out of the League You know it just. It's it's reeks of petty. There's no reason to do it. It's super petty and I'm not really sure if there's more to that argument than that. I'm not sure if they get along because they were always the guys that were compared to each other. But I do think that there's room room for some of these discussions. How much scheme helps inflate certain players numbers? That doesn't take away. Well I guess it Kinda does but look Mostert Mozart played a brilliant game. He's clearly the best option backfield that when map rita was healthy. He was running for eighty yards money. But the Shanahan's will get that out of just about anybody somehow yeah the Shanahan's and Kubiak the world whenever there's zone blocking scheme takes over for a running back their numbers just inflate and it's something specific traffic to them. There are plenty of other teams are like. We'd love to do zone blocking scheme for a running game and it doesn't end up working some really talented backs and putting stinky years like Darren McFadden but if Salvin young can perform this if Elaine is gary can perform in this Rueben drones can perform on this. I think there's a conversation to be had there. I really do. Oh Billy you're down on curb. Yeah I watched the first episode where I didn't I I don't know I felt like the first like five or six minutes. A lot of it was look really forced. I mean I'm assuming it will get better throughout the season. It was just like some of the stuff was outrageous and there was no real. Well wait a minute. That's the entire career. That's that Larry. Every David has built two industries after out of no point to what it is that they're doing just a minor grievances that he makes major by being a bleep pool. That's the whole. That's that's the whole construct. I mean I've seen curb before I know how the show works I'm just saying usually it's around a storyline when you're walking around just breaking right instead holding each other. Well it's ridiculous that we're here. I mean Dan as usual continues. The banishes for no reason whatsoever when he's the one doing all the wrong stuff on the show but did you hear what he said earlier. You said early. We started the show. Hopefully they bleeped it because because that's the kind of thing that gets you know. So you know you break a selfie stick you go you push down some of the scooters or whatever. There is fine line. While they're things are going on. But it was just Kinda like -rageous thing -rageous thing outrages thing and then filing I took it I liked I liked that he is tortured. Always always thinking that he's going to run out of ideas on what petty grievance he's GonNa Complain About and I very much for sitting on this caught it would be a little bit A little a bit cumbersome yeah I mean did you hear how he started the show that I did you hear. He started the show whether one spending all the time he's in reruns already. So the episode so is not unlike other episodes that they've done throughout their history where he's cramming more and more ridiculous Silly nonsense into it but you the first five or six minutes seems pointless to you. I was laughing out loud in front of my television. It was just Kinda like I was waiting to see where we were kinda going because it was just him and Leeann walking around and just you know causing some trouble but Leon being funny while they were they were funny. But you know. And he's look it's Billy Gill what the hell do I know. What am I to tell? Larry David what to do. So it's just hard. It's hard to be funny every week. I'm surprised either very comfortable. I would cuddle with you again. I say it's great. It's like a pillow. Hello here this is fantastic. We should we should intensely do some wrong on the air. So the Dan sends us in little cuddling. Your father sounds terrible again Chris. I'm a little worried about him again. Like he's spent the whole show coughing again we. He's been sick for like six months like almost two years now and he every time it's just like I'm just battling adults something he just never dude. I'm worried get better and comes in here. And he's wheezing the whole lumberjack. Thing I mean he makes a joke of it. But you know back in the late seventies in the Yukon. I was a lumberjack for about six or eight months you real yeah I was. I was in North West Manitoba. We're cutting Don Hundred Foot Pines and cedars and You know that's what I did so You know March two that were mackinac. Every once in a while I'll have to wear it in Miami though. Yeah well yeah but it was this. Is this the bit that worked so much better on television than it does on radio. Because you're sitting here watching Stu gods and to cody actually cuddling next week uncomfortably. And I'm afraid that whatever your father. It was too cold I loved working. The chainsaw ain't saw you know those are the big eighteen inches it was. You know there's something when you have an eighteen inch saw on your hand off feels h eating. It feels like steroids to me. I think I'd prefer to cut down a tree and the one time I have cut down. I did it with an ax. Well I mean you're a man's man You know mnuchin obviously use only in acts but billy. I don't believe there are a whole lot of people out here. Criticizing the season opener of curb. Your enthusiasm you're so you're really staking your own clan mean. I'm not normally like in the majority on stuff so used this. You generally like the show. I love the show. It's one of my favorite shows. I just you often tastic. I think even after the commercial break when he calls us back we should just stay here. Because it's it's nice. I'm thinking about leaving my wife review appalling bunions onions interesting. Because when he snatched the Gopro Larry David from that ladies and just casually walking pious over his knee Larry until we didn't like apply it seemed like they were just leaning on things that annoy Larry. There wasn't really but usually there's a story around that DOC. I don't understand why you guys are sitting. You're saying of curb your enthusiasm. It seems like they lean on things that annoy Larry and billy saying to me then. I don't need you to explain the show to me. But that's the whole show. The whole show is things that annoy. Larry I'm excited about the Sheryl angle like the rekindling shingle. Damn Damn right I would. He had everything you want in a in a big bad baseball batter. Had the big stick knew how to swing. It can make his own bats. alrighty chop down the tree and make his own bath Jack is your heart beating my it s.

"The opinion pages of the Wall Street Journal. This is Potomac Watch. Welcome back on Paul Zhigo with Kim Strassel and bill mcgurn and related to our conversation. Asian about Elizabeth Warren and Medicare fallbrook Obama for two-term president of the United States easily. The most popular Democrat in the country still Ah after he has left office is came out on a late last week on Friday and said that Democrats have to be careful with offering too much change in the presidential election because he said that voters are American. Voters do want some forward looking agenda but they are wary of blowing up. The whole system and I thought that that was an implicit rebuke. Bill of the warn agenda and of the Sanders Agenda and and the idea that You want to take away for example. We didn't mention it but one hundred seventy million private health insurance insurance policies and he said you know you need to be able to propose something that is incremental So obamacare was one thing build on that. Don't go in terms of big blowing up the whole system and a government takeover voters won't buy it or they'll be reluctant to buy it. A striking intervention wasn't a endorsement of Joe Biden his former vice president but but it was about as close as you're going to get from Brock Obama. Yeah I'm a little more cynical had it because I think what he's saying is absolutely correct. Don't sell this huge huge transformational thing and remember he campaigned. There's no blue America. There's Red America. I think what he's really saying. Campaign in these modest moderate tones and then once you get in there do whatever the hell you want and throw it all out and up and all these rules and so forth but that is the smart way to do it right tonight. Your healthcare plan your healthcare plan. You can keep it. Oh that's mean that famous That famous plan Kim it. I think the advice is is is I think he's I think. Elizabeth Warren is going to be asked about this and should be asked about this if the moderators the debate have their wits about them. It's a central element of how you're going to defeat whether night which way you go to defeat Donald trump well let's see if the moderators moderators. Actually go there. I don't hold a lot of hope in that regard ple but but just in terms of Barack Obama's comments look at the subject. We were just discussing which which was Medicare for all you know back. When Barack Obama was instituting this sweeping new agenda for healthcare which really was the most radical thing? The the American public had ever seen His administration made a conscious decision not to even go for the public option because they felt that that would be a bridge too. So far with voters We're not that far along from that date And and yet we now have candidates every single Democratic candidate. There is already already out in favor of the public option. And then you have. Several more. That are advocating getting rid of healthcare for everyone private healthcare for everyone in the country that is a radical Michael Agenda and just his pointing it out it. It is very sound advice. But it's notable to me that the most progressive president that we've ever had in this country Felt the need to tell US party to slow down. Yeah it's fascinating to me. Let's talk about The peed booed edge edge experience as James James Freeman. Our colleague. Put it in his Rather Woodley in his column headline Pete Is Mayor. Pete Mayor South Bend gaining Rather markedly in Iowa Woah. He is Now the leader in the register poll of highly credible poll. It's been quite accurate in the past and about The Iowa caucuses and now he is The front runner he has surpassed Biden and Bernie and Elizabeth Warren and So there's gotta be some than going out there also his fundraising has been a really really good Nationally he's running about eight percent but he's now the clear clear front runner in the Des Moines poll and I think has to be considered as a serious player bill for the nomination. We're still a long way out but I still still think he is Somebody who's Certainly certainly could win your. I'm looking at the real clear politics averages and you made a point in our editorial meeting earlier Bouche still fourth in the national polls eight point three percent but in Iowa he's number one in twenty one percent right so that can change you win. I will all of a sudden you are a real candidate and it changes a lot of the and it will affect the other national polls down the road and the and the succeeding succeeding contests and New Hampshire Nevada South Carolina. He's basically taken the place of Kamala Harris who was trailing at four and so forth as a serious candidate. He has a couple of pluses he has military background. I'm he speaks well on stage I don't I don't agree with most of what he says. He's articulate. Think his record. It's terrible but he speaks well on presents himself well on stage. I think he's enjoyed something of a honeymoon because when they think he really might get the brass ring. I think the attacks are GONNA come out. You already see some of it. You know amy. Klobuchar said that no woman with experience as thin as his would be on on that stage. I think there's a lot of resentment up there. Some of it may be over his fundraising prowess where he's very good. And it'll be interesting at this debate to see see when you when you rise as Elizabeth one out you get attacked well and Amy Klobuchar. Intervention is is Important because Kim. She has always always thought of herself. As a Minnesota senator as having a real chance in Iowa to make breakthrough she has a certain Midwest. Sensibility that would work. You would think in and I and Iowa. She's trying to operate in the same lane which is more centrist lane within the party. Not Off in the Warren and Sanders Land and and Yet as an alternative to Joe Biden so by Compete Mayor Pete with his rise is really taking some of the support report that she had hoped to get to rise at the last in the last couple of months in Iowa so I would expect to see Koba Char may be go after Pete Pete In the days ahead yeah. I would almost count on that because he is crowding her out. She made a determination early on her campaign pain that she was going to follow the Iowa strategy and really try to capitalize on her greater name. Id there And use it to catapult her Into a better position nationally. I think where she has struggled. And where mayor. Pete is outshining her as he has received so much national attention and that it has really allowed him to fundraise like crazy and then he has taken that money and in the same way she had the same intention. He's been pouring during it into Iowa buying more than two million dollars worth of TV spots zipped since September. I think he's had nearly four thousand spots on the air. That is clearly translating translating into something and the state The one caveat I would offer here in it's not just the national polls but if we had another poll out just recently about out South Carolina which is the third in the country And it's Quinnipiac poll Biden there gets twenty two percent of the white boat and Buddha judge gets eleven percent but then listen to this number biting gets forty four percent of the black vote and Buddha judge gets zero and I'm not missing a number there he he has got a track down a few individuals. I'm sure somewhere in the state who are for peace somewhere but he does have a big issue with minorities minorities which do make up a significant portion of the democratic electorate. There was a Telemundo poll from October Nationwide showing he got two percent of the Hispanic Spanish. Vote nationwide. So you know you can do well in Iowa but at a certain point you also have to translate back. That's that's got translate to other states and right now he has some big issues. Well Excellent point but Peter saying look if I can go to the front in I will that will galvanize media attention and Perhaps catapult me into a serious Person in New Hampshire. If you win New Hampshire and then Nevada before you go to south China can go in there with a with a real head of steam now. A- people who've won I wa have faltered before her Howard Dean comes to mind as one But on the other hand all of the recent democratic presidents who've or the the people who won the nomination have done very well in Iowa Al Gore won Iowa for example Barack Obama won Iowa and Hillary Sorry Clinton or the last time. If I'm not mistaken one Iowa so you have I was not a and John Kerry Now how did he win Iowa or not yes he did he did win Iowa so In two thousand four so that called catapulted them to them nation so I wouldn't under estimate the did the importance of Mayor Pete Win in Iowa. I think you're right palm. That's clearly his strategy. But again I do think that. He's benefited from people. People not taking a hard look at his record yet because he hasn't really been quite is threatening until very recently and Kim points out he has zero African African American support and not only that he has a black lives matter problem back in his in his home. City shootings are up and so forth and so forth heated up in the summer and then it receded but I think if he becomes serious serious. That people think you'll get it. This is going to Activate a lot of those people with protests. There'd be people they'll be reporters New York Times reporters in South Bend and so forth To look at his actual record to see if that's really where this country he wants to go and finally one other development in the Democratic presidential race Mike Bloomberg not formally in yet but nonetheless marching towards visit took the time to register to File his papers and Arkansas. Last week to some media attention. He's aiming at Super Tuesday. Tuesday so-called in the first week of March which will be after all of the early contests. We've been talking about but many many states on that day I believe including Texas and California. They'll be big A big number of delegates at stake so looks like Bloomberg is getting in. The best sign may be that he is going to get in Kim that he backtracked now and issued his regrets for his policy during twelve years of mayor. Rest stop and Frisk which was The policy of approaching people police approaching people who they suspected may have a have a reasonable suspicion. Bishen of having a firearm. You could check to see if they in fact did highly controversial on the political left and always defended by Mike Bloomberg in offers but now he says he actually should have ended it much sooner than he did. This is discouraging to me. I mean I agree with you that this is probably probably a a reason to believe that he is going to jump into the race when you start apologizing to the democratic electorate for things you have done in the past. It usually usually as a sign that you are preparing your pathway but you know one of the things..

"On and the next debate among the candidates. Is this week. Meanwhile he'd booed edge rises in Iowa Elizabeth with Warren Backtracks on Medicare for all sorts of and Barack Obama warned Democrats against promoting too radical. An agenda in in a presidential election. Welcome Paul Zhigo with the Wall Street Journal. And I'm here with my running mates bill. mcgurn how are you bill. Hey Paul and Kim Strassel. Hello Kim. We're GONNA take a break from impeachment for today No doubt we will be dragged back in just like Michael Corleone Godfather three but in In this conversation let's talk about the Democratic presidential race and the latest debate. Going going on lots been going on behind the scenes even if it's not getting much attention a in public and Let's talk about a couple of those things one is is the The backtracking by Elizabeth Warren on Medicare for all remember a couple of weeks ago. Kim She made a She made a detailed proposal of how she would finance Medicare for all included many tax increases and including La more detail Bernie Sanders has ever provided for his Medicare for all plan but it was roundly criticized. Not just on the right but also on the left for it's political vulnerability and its implausibility and now Last Friday she has come back and said well. I won't introduce Medicare for all right away. I'll do it in my third year as President United States and then the first year we will pass something on on Medicare including a public option But she will wait. I Medicare for all in my own view of her statement. Kim Is this is a mission. It's never going to happen on her term because no president president says. I'm going to wait for the third year to and and really does accomplish it. Rarely do you get anything done in in in that year specially something that at-large as Medicare for all it's also in a mission that she made a big mistake here and you have to look at how we got to this point. I don't remember this is the candidate who's been running on an agenda of bragging. She has a plan for everything and while ago some people noticed that one one glaring omission too. That was that she had no plan for what to do with healthcare and under enormous amounts of pressure. She suddenly comes out with this sweeping sweeping agenda of a Medicare for all. It's far more detailed as you said that. Even Bernie Sanders and also amazingly eye-popping -ly expensive expensive and she brought out a whole bunch of experts who attested to the soundness of the plan but a lot of other experts immediately jumped on even from the left and pointed out that it was really based on truly rosy expectations at the cost was just prohibitive. And you'd seen seen that reflected a little bit in the polls. She seems to have stalled out there as a lot of folks in a Democratic Party wondered if this just made her way to vulnerable that even if she won on the the primary If this would just load her with too much baggage Jamaica too big of a target for Donald Trump so she was losing little elevation now suddenly she comes back out with this shift again We will see if it does or any good because I it's it's a little bit late in it. It's not Very Elizabeth Warren E in that she's now looks to be changing our minds and our plans based on political calculations. Yeah I agree with that Paul. You know Generally the consensus is when you enter a job as as executive of your state of of the United States. You try to do everything as quickly as you can use your capital title Mitch. Daniels once explained that as governor of Indiana he said that the wisdom's contained in a country song called. If I shot you when I should have I'd be out of jail by now. Elizabeth Warren is going in the exact opposite direction. And Look. She's under it actually to me quite surprising attack attack. Not only you expect the other candidates to attack right and and you expect Joe Biden to say this is too expensive. I have the more moderate path but I think it is alarming in for Democrats. Some some of the some of the billionaire some of the people that they might expect otherwise to fund their campaigns have not only opposed her but opposed her so publicly. So I think I don't know whether it'll sinker. But clearly in the next debate It's going to be an issue and whether she can answer persuasively in confidently confidently Is a big question. One of her selling points is Ben. I'm not a fainthearted like these other people and unless you make the argument and fight for for it you're not GonNa get it. This walk back relatively modest as it is strikes me as off message on that point also suggests. He doesn't have the plan right that it's not she didn't expect this because again. And to your point if you compare this to Bernie he's always said all along. Okay we're going to have this and your taxes are going to go up for everyone but you're going to be better off. He doesn't shy away from the hard tradeoffs. Which is why? He's largely escaped the criticism and that she's been getting she looks like she wants to have it both ways. That's my point and that's why I wonder if in fact in the debate Bernie could simply say well. Well I'm not backing away from this. This is the core of my agenda. And maybe erode some of that allure. You're that that Warren has had. Because she says I have a plan for everything and I'm going to fight for it and on the other hand. I don't think they're the modifications. She's making here in. The timing of this is going to at all appease Pete booted edge and a Shar and others who are gonNA say. Well you're still proposing medicare for all you're still proposing the takeaway private health insurance from one hundred and seventy million Americans so this strikes me as a continuation of the problems that she has gotten herself into by. I think probably rather thoughtlessly adopting adopting the Bernie Agenda on medicare for all without really knowing what the implications would be politically. Yeah her problem. Came all the way back at that first debate debate when she just threw her hand up in the air. And said I'm with Bernie on Medicare for all and if you'd looked at what she had done up until then she'd been very careful and I think it was the reason that Elizabeth Warren didn't put out a plan on this for so long and it was because she kept saying. WELL WE WANNA get to Medicare for all but there are many different impasse forgetting there and she always left it open that maybe it would be a transition. Maybe something calm and the reason she did this is because she didn't WanNa get smacked around like Bernie on the tax question right so she didn't want to have to say I'm going to implement this plan. It means taxes on on middle class. Americans are GONNA go up. It's the only way to pay for it now. Has Built mentioned Bernie's been honest about that but since she's running more of the populace campaigns. She just refused. She kept getting asked and the debate. Isn't it the case that middle class taxes are GONNA go up. She refused to say that. Refuse to say this and then she was so proud when she finally put out her plan and saying look. I don't raise taxes on middle class Americans. The problem was that the the math that she had to do in the taxes that she had no impose on everything else was so wild that it really opened her up to a lot of legitimate criticism and attacks and she's still trying to have it all ways. Here we're talking about the Democratic presidential the campaign and the upcoming debate and you're listening to.

He wanted Hallinan to tighten the ship so to speak regarding everything under the security umbrella that included access to the players clubhouse before Jalan took over there is almost no control over who is coming and going from the clubhouse logistically speaking. This lack of control represented a security threat if someone wanted to hurt one of the players it was almost too easy to get access is to them. One of the first things Hallinan did upon becoming head of security was to make sure there was someone standing guard at the clubhouse entrances to sign people all in out by random chance as Jalan toward stadiums throughout the season he frequently ended up being in town the same day the Cincinnati Reds in his efforts to curtail access to the players clubhouse Pete's entourage was particularly egregious in terms of how they seem to have free rein over the stadium as a former. NYPD Lieutenant Helena new and underground betting operation when he saw one he also heard about Pete's recent memorabilia sales and Helen's experience people like Pete Rose only needed that kind of cash for one reason to cover debts so he decided to dig a little deeper into peach activities with commissioner Ueberroth Permission Helen in had Joe Daley an ex FBI colleague who operated out of Cincinnati put out some feelers raise through daily. Helen was able to find out about the shady operations going on in the Gold's gym heat frequented although although he wasn't able to get any concrete proof daily heard a lot of whispers that Pete was betting on Baseball Helen and decided the best course of action would be to conduct a quiet investigation into Pete's gambling practices the whole time Helen's investigation was ongoing Pete had no idea he was under any sort of scrutiny he continued to bet on baseball including games games involving the reds. We never bet for them to lose but that didn't change the fact that he was completely violating rule twenty one won once the nineteen eighty six season ended. He decided he was finally ready to stop playing baseball. After collecting a grand total of four four thousand two hundred and fifty six hits he felt like it was time for him to transition into working solely as the reds manager but even though Oh he was no longer playing for the team that didn't mean Pete was in the clear rule twenty-one clearly prohibited any team employees from betting on on Baseball Games and that included the manager over the next two seasons while Pete managed the reds Helen daily continued their investigation while they were still short on proof they had heard enough rumors to suspect Pete violating rule twenty one in February wary of nineteen eighty nine about a month before the season was set to begin Pete was summoned to the MLB headquarters in New York. He had no idea idea he was walking into an ambush as he entered commissioner. Peter Ueberroth Office Pete was greeted did by the grim faces of Uber Off Incoming Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti and his deputy Fay Vincent they asked him point blank. Thank you bet on Baseball Pete admitted that he bet on other sports but categorically denied that he had ever wagered on a baseball game game he insisted he would never be that stupid. The three men had every reason to not push the matter any further although Hallinan had had heard rumors that Pete had bet on baseball he didn't have any real proof and that was good enough for you broth and GM Mati in addition to being being a steward of the game the Commissioner of baseball also answered to the owners and that meant taking the bottom line in the consideration Pete was one of the greatest players of all time is relentless drive and passion for the game made him one of the sport's most popular stars financially it made sense to cast him out of the League but Deputy Commissioner Fay Vincent was a man of unbending principle. He felt that their responsibility he was to make sure the integrity of baseball superseded any financial obligations. You've Pete was betting on Baseball Games that meant he was spitting in the face of one of America's noblest institutions. They couldn't go easy on him. Just because of his status Vincent's passionate case of integrity over money honey one over Ueberroth Giamatti they resolved open an independent investigation into Pete's gambling habits Vincent's recommendation attorney. John Dowd was chosen to conduct the inquiry as a no nonsense attorney so you with an aptitude for big cases dowd was the perfect choice he'd leave no stone unturned in his pursuit of the Truth Investigation Gatien officially began on March Sixth Nineteen Eighty nine upon arriving in Cincinnati Dowd was certain he had a long road ahead of him and not only was a local hero but getting his associates to reveal their own roles in the enterprise was a big ask underground around rings ran on loyalty and trust if these men were willing to betray Pete rose of all people for the rest of their clients might leave leave them however nearly the moment dowd set foot in the city. The men involved in Pete's betting circles ratted him out during Kevin Evan Helen's more discreet questioning. Nobody had turned on Pete but by March one thousand nine hundred nine he owed too much money to too many people. Oh if they weren't going to get their money back they were willing to get payback in a different way. The first one to betray Pete was Paul Paul Janssen a steroid dealer Gold's gym would place bats on Pete's behalf in the spring of Nineteen eighty-seven Jansen was so eager to help make wagers with a bookie Ron Peters that he even paid around forty thousand dollars out of his own pocket to do it. The expectation was that Pete would pay him back later but peed had racked up another thirty four thousand dollars in gambling debts with Ron Peters at the end of the summer of eighty seven and Peter's refuse to pay out forty thousand dollars Pete had one claiming it as payment with interest for the money Pete still owed him that refusal had an unintended ripple effect on Paul Johnson who was still in the whole for the money he had used on behalf but pete reportedly refused to fully repay him this betrayal Stung Jansen to his core Janssen heard about John Dowd's investigation when he was all too happy to turn on his friend in addition to his own notebook in which he meticulously tracked every wager he placed Janssen provided what he claimed repeats own records of the bets dowd had them analyzed by a handwriting writing expert who concluded the Janssen was telling the truth after Janson came forward the bookie Ron Peters also decided to help with dowd's house investigation at the time of the investigation peters was awaiting sentencing on cocaine trafficking and falsifying tax returns. Even though the doubt investigation was independent of the Justice Department. Perhaps he thought he might get a lighter sentence for cooperating in addition to providing the copy of the thirty four thousand dollar check Pete had given him Peter's turned over his own betting records these records confirm the bets that Pete had placed laced via Johnson and that many of these wagers were on baseball games as news from the investigation leaked to the press pete vehemently humanly denied he had ever bet on baseball games even with over a dozen witnesses saying otherwise and the evidence to back them up Pete refuse to admit what he had done. When the nineteen eighty nine season began in early April Pete Rose had gone from beloved hero to despise villain with the exception of Pete's loyal home fans everywhere the reds went pete found himself relentlessly booed? It didn't matter how many records he had he had betrayed the game itself wants dowd had gathered his evidence. He called Pete in for a deposition in late April nineteen eighty nine with so much publicity surrounding the investigation allegation they had to find a quiet discreet place to meet away from the scrutiny of the press instead of meeting in Pete's office or at the New York Doc. MLB Headquarters Pete Rose and John Dowd sat down across from each other in the school cafeteria. The Small Catholic school in Cincinnati natty over the course of two days of questioning Pete steadfastly denied that he had ever bet on a major league baseball game even when Dowd showed Pete the betting slips journal entries in phone records that served as evidence against him even when he he played a phone call Paul Johnson had recorded with another one of Pete's associates about the debt zeroed Pete still refused to yield but dowd dowd didn't need Pete to admit.

Although he had kept up his illegal sports betting after leaving leaving the reds in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine the bookies in Cincy knew him he was Pete Freak and rose an icon a legend what's more he was one of them. Pete may have been a celebrity but he didn't act like some stuck up millionaire take away the baseball ball uniform and he was just another guy from Anderson ferry if he wanted to make a bet all he had to do was ask and Pete Pete certainly wanted to bet in the fall of nineteen eighty four he found out from a friend that the real action was taking place out of a local Gold's Gold's gym but Pete was too recognizable to stroll through the doors and start placing bets himself as we discussed last week betting on any sports sports other than horse racing was illegal. If it was too obvious that Pete was breaking the law he could risk getting arrested however that didn't didn't keep him from gambling he just had intermediaries place wagers forum with a bookie named Ron Peters by December he was using using Peter's to place two thousand dollar bets on up to ten football games every weekend and as the bookie would later confess pete eventually started betting on baseball to his bold play on the field to his extramarital affairs pete had had always been reckless but betting on baseball was taking it to another level betting on baseball had been a stain on the MLB MLB legacy since the so called black socks nineteen nineteen scandal in which members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of purposely throwing throwing the world series the black SOx scandal violated one of the most sacred tenants of the sport that the most deserving team would emerge emerged victorious to restore the public's faith in the League rule twenty one section D was created in nineteen twenty seven according to this stipulation if any employees of a major league baseball team was caught betting on baseball games they would be placed on the permanent imminent in eligible list that meant they would be barred from participating in any official. MLB events for the rest of their life. If repeat got caught betting on baseball he wouldn't be able to continue his quest to break ty Cobb's record. You'd be forced to step down from his position and as the reds manager he wouldn't even be able to enter a stadium unless he bought a ticket like everyone else but for Pete to be found in in violation of rule twenty one he would have to get caught betting on baseball and there were few factors making such a thing extremely unlikely first the very nature of underground bedding made it hard to trace any wagers back to pete in addition to relying on cash Asha exchanges bookies also made sure to refer to people using codenames for instance Pete's Moniker was the number fourteen gene. It wasn't particularly subtle it word on his back and every time he took to the field but it's still kept his name from being uttered allowed second unless a police officer went undercover exposed a bookmaker and convinced them to out their clients. There was no real way to catch Pete Red handed ended and even then with so little in the way of physical evidence it would be hard to actually prove Pete had made the bets especially Louis if he used someone as an intermediary to place bets for him but all these roadblocks were useless. If Pete didn't keep his mouth shut talk about what he was doing all it would take to bring him down was pete trusting his secret with the wrong person as it turned out that person was his own mother Laverne apparently Pete Disgust discussed his gambling with laverne however he neglected to mention that she should keep it a secret unbeknownst to Laverne she was sitting on a powder keg that could destroy her son's career and when a Cincinnati Inquirer journalist named John Iraqi came calling she inadvertently Lee let it blow up ahead of the nineteen eighty five season Iraqi visited Laverne to do some background research for his upcoming book chronicling Glinka Pete's attempt to break ty COBB's hit record as they chatted Laverne. Let slip that Pete had lost a lot of money when he bet on the San the ACL padres to win in the eighty four world series against the Detroit Tigers although a rarity had just moved to the sports division from Metro he was pretty sure that it was against the MLB's rules for Pete to bet on baseball. If he decided to dig any deeper he could probably find out not enough to get P placed on the ineligible list but Iraqi stayed quiet betting on baseball was considered a high crime against the sport court at the same time. Pete was only ninety four hits away from passing COBB. If Iraqi exposed the hometown hero when he he was so close to breaking the record the journalists would probably get run out of town for the moment pete secret was safe as the nineteen eighty five season dawned all anybody in Cincinnati could talk about was when Pete would break the record. It didn't matter that the man known as Charlie Hustle was old and slow the reds faithful knew he deliver come hell or high water. He always delivered even at forty four years old Pete certainly seemed up to the task even though his body couldn't take the grind of playing almost every day he got into the lineup enough to consistently rack up heads throughout the spring and summer by the time the calendar hits September he was within striking range of COBB's record by September eighth. Pete was at four thousand one hundred hundred eighty nine hits only two hits away from COBB. It was the last of a six game road trip and much to the delight of Reds Fans Hands Back in Cincinnati. The Chicago cubs were planning on playing a left handed pitcher one of Pete's rules when he returned to the reds was that he would never never play against lefties even as a switch hitter they gave him too much trouble. Despite the fact that the record was in his sights he planned to honor honor that rule he wouldn't bat again until the reds came home. It was all but assured that Pete rose would become the new hit king in front of the Cincinnati Cincinnati faithful however fate had other plans the morning of the Game Pete found out that the pitcher the cubs were planning on playing got injured instead the right handed pitcher Reggie Patterson would be taking the mound when Pete heard the news he practically we started salivating. He had scored a single off Patterson only two days earlier although he had hoped to break Cobb's record while at home he couldn't risk not not playing at his age every game counted so he put himself into the lineup in his first. I Bat Pete hammered another single off of Patterson he was one.

"Another day another ballpark Kevin Harlan and loved his job but the newly minted head of security from Major League Baseball had to admit it was getting a bit monotonous on the surface. So many of these stadiums have their own mystique from Green Monster Monster at Boston's Fenway Park to the Ivy covered brick outfield wall at Chicago's Wrigley Field each place had its own quirks its own personality but underground they were all the same the long concrete tunnels the bustle of activity everyone doing his or her part to make sure the game going on above them went off without a hitch but there was another side to what was happening a darker side when he first I started touring the Ballpark's Helen was surprised at how easy it was to gain entry into players club houses they were packed with all sorts of characters none of whom had any form of security clearance that included the vast entourage of slime balls that accompanied Pete Rose rose everywhere he went they were big guys with bulging muscles slicked back hair and pagers clip to their belts Helen a new type right from his days in the nypd he could spot bookies from a mile away. Hallinan had heard the rumors that Pete Rose was a profligate gambler earlier and once he saw the kind of people pete surrounded himself with he began to suspect the whisperers were true however this wasn't some scrub Auber journeyman outfielder this was pete rose the hit king it was only a matter of time until he was enshrined into the Hall of Fame But if HAL ammon suspicions proved to be correct it didn't matter how influential Pete was if it turned out Pete's gambling habits had spread to baseball he would be in violation of one of the MLB as most iron clad rules. Anyone who bad on a major league baseball game would be banned from the sport forever..

"Another thirty five hits. He'd have that season season in only twenty six games. Pete's returned to Cincinnati hadn't only reenergize the fan base it had reenergized him as well all all of a sudden he was only ninety four hits behind ty COBB. The all time hits record was within reach and it looked like he'd break it it as a read the nineteen eighty five season dawn with a sense of palpable excitement the press warm the city like never her before eclipsing anything. Pete had seen in his heyday. Everyone wanted a piece of Pete rose and he was happy to oblige them. Before the season started pete made an agreement with the sporting news to make daily journal entries throughout the season they'd be compiled piled into a paperback called countdown to Cobb. He also made a deal with the Cincinnati Inquirer to allow a young journalist named John or Artie already too closely cover. Pete and the team throughout the season as part of his background research Iraqi interviewed Pete's mother Laverne Burn. He had no idea it would lead to one of the most stunning revelations in the history of sports parts while they got to know each other laverne brought up the previous season's world series between the San Diego padres and the Detroit Troy Tigers. She told Iraqi that Pete had lost a bundle of money by betting on the underdog padres. Gherardi ready did a double take. He wasn't a season sports writer but he knew that if what Laverne said was true it would be grounds for Pete to be banned from baseball for life..

"Pete wasn't putting any money down on baseball games or if he was nobody ever found out about it and no one thought to look too deeply as he continued to play top tier baseball into the next decade eh one of his most iconic moments and one of the most iconic moments in baseball history came during the nineteen seventy all star game name held in the Reds Own Stadium while the game was just an exhibition and didn't count for for anything other than pride those involved took it extremely seriously for the past seven editions. The National League all stars had bested rested their opponents from the American league with the game being held on the reds home. Turf Pete was desperate to keep that streak going it was one of the most exciting all star. Games in recent memory going into the bottom of the ninth. Pete's National League team was down for one they managed to mount a comeback and although the inning ended with Pete striking out he didn't care by then the team had nodded up the game at four to four they were going into extra innings. The tenth inning passed without a score for either team same with the eleventh by the time. Pete got back up to bat during the bottom of the twelfth there were two outs and no men on base a thirteenth inning seemed inevitable but not to Pete Rose First Pitch Ball one second pitch ball to up to go with a hitters. This count rose took a cut of third pitch and punched a soft single into the outfield. The next batter up hit a single as well moving beat up to second the crowd buzzed with anticipation has another batter. Jim Hickman of the Chicago cubs stepped up to the plate. Hickman took a cut and slap a soft line drive out to center field. Pete took off like a bat out of hell he never even considered stopping at third base playing it safe just wasn't NPR's DNA as he turned the corner towards home plate. The crowd roared all fifty fifty one thousand eight hundred thirty eight of the people in attendance rising to their feet at once there was still one thing standing between Pete and a Glorious Victory American League Catcher Ray Fosse he stood sentinel over home plate glove outstretched ratched the center fielder hurled the ball towards Fossey as Pete barrel down the third base line. It was going to be close to close for arose gritting. His teeth Pete lowered his shoulder. He charged into Fossey at the same moment. The ball came into the catcher's. Mitt the force of the the collision knocked Fosse to the ground in a heap the ball flying from his glove as Fossey lay on the ground writhing in pain. Pete scrambled to touch home base. Although it was a physical play the umpire ruled fair. Pete had won the game but it came at a cost Ray Fosse at separated and fractured his shoulder rose was explain it away by simply saying there was no place to slide the collision play went down as one of the most memorable in the history of the the All Star game also unofficially sanctioned the home base collision play as a part of baseball runners continued to use the play. Hey to breakthrough. Catchers standing in the base path until catchers were outlawed from blocking the plate in two thousand fourteen four safety reasons following. Pete's triumphant moment in the nineteen seventy all star game he helped lead the reds to their first appearance in the world series is in nine years although they lost to the Pittsburgh pirates in five games this season as a whole had been a triumph for Pete individually he finished seventh in MVP voting and won. Another golden glove a few days after the season ended. Pete brought his father hairy a with him to a charity basketball game at a local Cincinnati high school as the capacity crowd filed in to get a look at their hometown hero hairy noticed. There were markings on the floor for a forty yard dash. A mischievous glint appeared in the elder roses is he strolled over over to where Pete was shooting some warm baskets and challenged him to a race had I P laughed him off. He may not have been the fleetest afoot afoot but he was twenty nine years old and at the peak of his athletic powers but Harry kept egging him on Pete caved and agree to the race. This Harry wanted to get embarrassed in front of a crowd of high-schoolers was his decision. After a quick sprint. It was all over as the crowd cheered. Pete shook his head in Disbelief Harry had won the kids packed into the stands aided up a fifty nine year old bank teller had beaten Charlie Hustle himself in a foot race in it hadn't even been close close a week later. Pete was at the barbershop when the telephone rang as the barber listened to the voice. We saw the other side. His face went white handshaking. He hung up and turn to Pete. He had terrible news. Hairy was dead. Pete couldn't believe it. He must have misheard he. He asked if the barber meant his mother hairy couldn't be dead. He was invincible but it was true that day in December nineteen seventy seventy Harry rose died from a blood clot in his heart. Pete wept for three days on end. His father was his hero. Oh his guiding light while Pete hadn't quite lived up to Harry strict moral code he had still learned to be honest to admit his mistakes but with Harry Gone Pete loss that voice in his ear keeping him on the straight and narrow and as his star continued continued to rise. There was nobody around to keep him in check not his wife not his mother not his teammates. Nobody could tell him no and that was just fine by him. Coming Up Pete becomes truly on shackled and now back to the story when Pete Rose lost his his father Harry in December nineteen seventy the twenty nine year old all star was beset with Grief Harry had meant everything to him but pete refused to let his father's death destroy him by the time the first pitch was thrown for the nineteen seventy one season. Pete Pete was ready to play and he had a hell of a team behind him to do it with the big red machine was the nickname of the nineteen seventies. Cincinnati natty reds the core of the team dominated the National League for the majority of the decade some still consider them to be one of the greatest teams teams ever assembled they trotted out future hall of famers Johnny Bench Joe Morgan and Tony Perez with a supporting cast that included Ken Griffey Senior and George Foster and of course Pete Rose Pete was one of baseball's most fearsome players throughout the nineteen seventies he won. MVP In nineteen seventy three and captain the reds to another world series appearance in nineteen seventy five this time they were facing off against the Boston Red Sox after Pete led the team to an incredible comeback in game six. The reds headed into game seven with a championship on the line. The team came out of the gates sluggish luggage and slow by the time the sixth inning came around Boston was up three to nothing with one out and all seemed lost then. Pete rose came up to bat like most of the twenty five hundred plus hits peed racked up to that point. The ball didn't have a ton of power behind it but there was enough to get him to first base when the next batter came up. Pete bounced up and down in anticipation nation as long as the batter hit a decent ball nothing could stop eat from getting to the next base or beyond nothing except for or a ground ball to the shortstop poorly hit grounder like that often lead to double plays in fact Boston had already racked up two two of them so far. If they got another one it would be three outs and another inning wasted. Pete prepared to run as the pitcher wound up through the batter swung and sent the ball straight to the shortstop from there. All the shortstop had to do was make an easy eight foot toss to the second baseman and P would be out there was almost no point in running but this was the world series and Pete was determined to try he charged down the baseline and launched into a feet first slide. Has the shortstop tossed the ball to the second basement. He was too late. The baseman caught.

He's he's also on Major League Baseball's in eligible list for gambling on baseball games including his own that means he's barred hard from any professional association with the MLB can't be inducted into the baseball hall of fame this week we'll dive into. Pete Rose's rise from unheralded cross backed the hometown hero also examined the beginnings of his entry into the dark world of underground beddings thanks and how it impacted his personal and professional life next week we'll follow. Pete's continued obsession with gambling and find out about how it landed him on the M. L. Bees in eligible list as far as athletes go every once in a while there comes along star that has no real discernible talent that is they do not excel in any clear way. They aren't the fastest don't display incredible smarts or instinct for the game. They're relatively under sized in often overlooked by professional all scouts but they have something about them. The swagger unabashed confidence and infectious and motivating drive. Have that pushes them past the competition. Pete Rose was the poster boy for this type of athlete at five eleven two hundred pounds stocky but not incredibly strong he swung the bat with a tight quick swing almost as though he was trying to slap the ball more than slug it it was known for his unceasing motor his relentless bass running his charging sacrificial style every sport has these players players these so-called Hustle guys they remind children and aspirational amateurs alike. You don't need the special ingredients of genetic lottery. Sometimes success is very much just hard work but rarely do. We count these type of players as the best. I ever play their game. Pete Rose was an exception to this rule. He rode the wave of his dedication to one one of the greatest individual careers baseball has ever seen raking seemingly unbreakable records winning multiple championships and MVP and making an incredible seventeen all star appearances with such a track record. It seemed inevitable that he would make baseball's hall of fame but Pete Rose wasn't just reckless in bullheaded on the field he had a hidden side to his personality body that would forever prevent him from getting baseball's greatest award. Peter Edward Rose Rose was born on April fourteenth nineteen forty one in Cincinnati. He's working class. Anderson Ferry neighborhood. His Father Harry was was a skilled semi pro football player and his mother Laverne had been talented high school softball player as well. Pete and Harry's relationship ship was special and informed much of who he later became Harry was an emblem of discipline every day in full work attire fire for his job as a bank teller leather shoes starched button-down shirt and uncomfortable slacks hairy would sprint up the hill leading adding to his house. If his football team lost over the weekend he would do it twice. Pete Watch this dedication and learned from a young age that desire heart and commitment could propel you forward in unexpected ways as a teenager rose was lightweight and undersized is but what he lacked in physical abilities he made up for with endless desire and boundless hustle rose was a star athlete late at Western hills high school playing both varsity football and baseball. He was known for his hard charging relentless style but those weren't the only qualities Harry hit instilled in his son even though he taught his son to never drink a drop of alcohol into I always get a good night's sleep. The elder rose was an avid gambler on the weekends. Harry liked to bet on horses is at the river downs race track. It wasn't unusual for Pete even when he was a young child to be. Intel that was life from the Anderson Ferry neighborhood. Pete loved going to the races with his dad he was fascinated by the analytical side of betting sure or luck played a big part but he also saw how when Harry took the time to really comb through the form guide he could emerge victorious more more often than not. There was nothing quite like watching the Horse Harry had picked crossed the line in first place the thrill of victory it was sweet indeed but not as sweet as the thrill of payout whenever Harry one big he would treat his son to an extravagant meal at their favorite restaurant. Pete loved the satisfaction of knowing Harry's careful strategy had helped them come out on top just like his athletic career. Pete saw how putting in the extra work at the race track could lead to significant reward that hard work translated slated to Pete's performances on the baseball field. He wasn't the strongest. He wasn't the fastest but he was relentless. It wasn't sexy but he thrived as the man to push his limits. He was also a natural leader. Pete's relentless intensity rubbed off on his his teammates inspired them to work harder run faster care a little more he truly embodied the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote that served as Western turnhill highs slogan. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Unfortunately enthusiasm awesome alone wasn't enough to get someone into the big leagues when Nineteen Year Old Pete graduated from High School in Nineteen sixty pro scouts didn't. I didn't think he had the physical tools to make it in the majors. College Ball wasn't in the cards. Either Pete wasn't exactly a gifted student. Luckily he had another option. The minor leagues at the time. Pete's Uncle Buddy was doing some scouting for Cincinnati's major league baseball team the reds after Pete went undrafted buddy convinced Cincinnati's upper management to give his nephew a minor minor league contract. It was a low risk high reward move. If Pete's physical development took the next step he could become a valuable player as well as a box office draw. Nothing resonated with fans more than a local kid making good after all and if Pete failed it was no big deal he was a no name prospect from Anderson Ferry not a high profile rookie who was expected to become the face of the franchise pete sign the contract with no hesitation even though he was getting sent to the Geneva red legs in the Class D New York Penn League. Although it was pro ball it was just about as far from the major leagues as a player Cadet. It's hard to know exactly how much he was making but chances are pete was barely early making a living in the minors today. A Minor League baseball players average starting salary is twelve hundred dollars per month in his his day. Pete was making tiny fraction of that and while there was a pot of gold waiting at the end of the proverbial rainbow. There was no guarantee not pete would make it. They're on generally only ten percent of all minor leaguers. Make it to the major league but the long hard hard road ahead of Pete didn't bother him. Keep your head down and surged forward. It was what his father taught him. It was the code that would bring him. Mm to the Big Leagues Pete's bet on himself paid off after three seasons in the minors. He got the call he had been dreaming of. Since he was a kid. The reds wanted him to join them for spring training ahead of the nineteen sixty three season but being part of spring training leaning wasn't the same as making the final twenty eight man roster although Pete had come a long way some of the reds coaches still had their doubts he was still slow and he had a hitch in his swing is pete was going to make the cut he'd have to prove his worth in the only way he knew how with unrelenting hustle the. May Have only been meaningless preseason games in February and March but p treated spring training training Mike it was the world series after one particularly memorable performance against the New York Yankees Superstars Whitey Ford in Mickey Mantle. We're discussing how pete had caught their eye. They called him Charlie.
When you think of Ichiro's career you think hits and steals, but don't forget about his incredible arm
"You've heard Ichiro reported his he's going to retire after this game today that they're playing this morning in Japan. Now, he has three thousand hits I did some research. Thirty two players have three thousand hits twenty-seven have five hundred home runs. If you're a player, which which feet would you rather achieve five hundred home runs or three thousand hits in today's game. Five hundred home runs. Three thousand hits is nice. But I don't know if people really look at that is that's an incredible it is an incredible feat. I don't know of today's baseball generation looks at that and says boy he had ten consecutive seasons of two hundred hits or more along with Pete Rose. You also stole five hundred basis. I don't think that we look at though, they're not glamour numbers anymore stolen, bases hits. And it used to be. But now, I think it would be home runs. If I could have five hundred home runs as opposed to three thousand hits today twenty years ago. I'm taking the three thousand hits factor in sabermetrics with that opinion because obviously on base percentage has become in some people's mind more important than batting average. You remind me of sabermetrics, I never think of sabermetrics the game. I mean, I don't know if it changed it in a good way. I think there's so many stance with baseball that you're you're you're drunk with stats. You drowned in those stats homerun, very simple. There's nothing to factor in with that. It's just you hit a home run. What if back in the day, they decided to walk counts for a hit which would have been very reasonable. Measure, in fact, probably more reasonable than not counting for. I don't know why they decided not if they did that then you would look at Adam Dunn is I'm sorry. The former White Sox slugger as as valuables in each row. It was just a random decision statistically, not to count walks. Yeah. I mean, you count points for free throws on base percentage. I know that that's a big deal. But it makes you well you keep saying Adam Dunn. One of the great players because I look at on base percentage. I just think a guy who strikes out one hundred eighty times to two hundred times in a season. You're not even putting the ball into play. How can that guy? Be that valuable. Okay. He walks hits home runs or strikes out. That's not somebody. I wanted my lineup. Yeah. Paulie? He didn't really have a great base percentage. No. He did. He did not walk a lot. We do. We ran the numbers a little bit each came into the league at twenty seven. And he was he won MVP as a rookie and rookie of the year. If he would come in just two seasons earlier at twenty-five with how good he was you could tack on another almost five hundred hits he'd be sixth all-time he'd be over thirty five hundred hits. If he just came in at age twenty five twenty seven. Yeah. Now, he's a great player didn't win. Anything was baseball. You can be selfish in a team sport. Because it's you at the plate. Now, there are other mitigating factors in there. But still you go to the plate. It's just you. And he's playing in right field. He was very good outfielder. Great arm. I don't know how many Gold Gloves, but he won a few Gold Gloves out there, but three thousand hits five hundred stolen bases in first. Ballot hall of Famer he came into the league with the Seattle. Mariners magin if he would've came into the league with the New York Yankees with how he came out of the gate. Oh, one through nine. He was through two thousand ten all star every year top twenty MVP every year. Imagine if you did all that with the Yankees where he'd be looked at

You get to watch what's brewing. PA with the Joe six pack of me talking beer. Oh, okay. So to beer show is on tonight. From northern kitchen. Equipment have very fine. WIP sponsor. Okay. We talked beer we sit around drink beer. Ray? You guys you guys had a good slot. You guys were on NBC sports Philadelphia right before the eagles game last Sunday. Yeah. That wasn't bad. Now that was good. Able drank enough beer that they basically cruise through the eagles. We were. We were in the studio getting our stuff together. I looked up at the monitor. And and they're you and Don Russell were on camera. You were all decked out in your eagles green. Yep. They run every Sunday night every six every Saturday night eleven then they repeated a few times during the week so good. All right. Let's get Russell in here. Russell you're on ninety four WIP. Yes. I thought a great acquisition was Pete Rose. Anybody? During the season though. Wasn't it? With bill. Great opposition. No question. Yeah. Excellent excellent acquisition. But now the the premise is it has to be an in season acquisition. Right. Pete was a winner signing some other people put this on social media. He was in hockey season. But that isn't what we're talking about. Because we're talking about in the baseball season. Now, I remember that was the one where the amount of money they gave him which by today's standards is nothing. It was like one point eight mill for four year three years something like that. With so much that Phillies ownership went to their broadcast partner, which was channel twenty which at the time was Taft broadcasting. That's correct. And said you gotta help us pay for this guy. And they did. Which was a good move all around, but has nothing to do with the topic. We're discussing today, right? So there you have it that was that was really something. I remember that they had had a press conference the Phillies at a press conference like a week or a couple of weeks earlier where they basically came out and said, we can't do it. We we'd love Pete. And we would love to have done it. But we're talking to his agent, and it's just not gonna work out. And they they basically folded folded up their cards and walked away from the table and. It's really funny. I I wrote a column where I ride just ripped them. And I just said I love the old dingy rip combs, man. Once in a while, I'll find whether you you had a good good nasty edge when you want it you could show your teeth every once in a while. Well, what was really funny about it was I mean, it was all the all the other writers were there at the press conference when Giles got up and spoke, and and and I think Rulli carpenters there too, and they all made their case and just can't afford it. And and all of the other writers Conlon, STAN, I mean, all the all the other writers in town Dawson with nobody we weren't talking to each other about how we felt about it. But I I had my own feelings about it. And I went back, and I wrote this column where I just I just ripped the Phillies and just said, you know, this is why you guys are never going to win because you're you're afraid to be bold enough to do the things that has to take to win. And I figured everybody else would say the same thing. And I picked up the paper the next day and everybody else kind of stuck on the Phillies. Side everybody else kind of wrote that well, you know, that's it really is an awful lot. And probably is more than what he's asking for is probably more than the, and I thought what I'm sort of out there on my own as the one guy that really took him to task. And then two weeks two weeks later, they they make this deal and they sign him. Yeah. And I remember Philadelphia magazine wrote a piece saying that I was the reason that the Philly's got Pete Rose how good work, right? Well, I don't think that was the case. But I remember that was one time when I I really broke from the pack, and and offered an opinion that was purely my own and lo and behold, a wound up coming true. And I still to this day believe that the Phillies hadn't signed Pete Rose. I don't think that team would have won the World Series. I think he was that important that nineteen eighty season. So compare and contrast that now, and again, I think that was less than two mill that they signed him for. I think it probably was with you have two free agents out there who are going to draw contracts. Let's just say ten. Years three hundred million dollars. Right. Oh, yeah. It'll be every every bit of that. So set that as as the the bar, the low bar, and you have Phillies owner John Middleton coming out the other day, saying we're gonna spend stupid. And maybe go after both of them. And certainly if the Phillies don't sign either of them, he is setting himself up to be remember when the Sixers like, you know, we're going star hunting, and they didn't right and people thought for like five minutes, they were gonna get LeBron. Yeah. I still don't understand why. But that's what they thought they get Kawhi Leonard. Well, the Sixers managed to do something now. But Middleton is is I hope to hell he succeeds in this as a Phillies fan. Because he's going out there. Basically, he's like a drunk sailor throwing money. Ran a red light district sank come on here. I am. And I'm not sure it's the best strategy in terms of negotiating. But I wish him success. Yeah. This sailor finds his Dayton. Yeah. How he sees certainly painted. The bulls eye on himself by saying this, and look is all you have to. It's just money. All you have to do. All you have to do is pay him. Yeah. It's not like you have to make trade. Now. They're they're all you have enough cigars. All you have to do is go the agents say, what's it cost? Okay. Here you go. And guess what? It's done. I hope it happens. I mean, there are some people out. There are some people think they can do both. I can't imagine that you could do both. But I think the put themselves in a position where the kind of have to do one or the other. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Eight eight eight seven to nine ninety four ninety four when you bought your new place your new new house. Yes. Did you is that how you negotiated? What's that? Hey, I'm here to spend stupid. What do you want? Well, the part I got covered the stupid part. I can handle you just didn't announce it ahead of time. No, no, no. That say the partnership that I worked out with my wife is she doesn't negotiating. I do the stupid all the stuff all the stuff that really really has to be done and done correctly. Yeah. Like, the reading the contracts understanding the language, right? Negotiating talking of the realtors gone to the bankers mortgage people. My wife does that. I'm just stupid now. There you go..

Major league baseball someone. Who's not, in the hall of fame. And Pete, Rose said. Recently that he's not very happy When I watch. Baseball not happy. With the game I'll give you a quote he says that I I I'm going. To argue with baseball until the day I die that baseball's juiced I don't care what anyone says He goes on to say that I saw the ball bounce behind the dugout the. Other day Anaheim and. It bounced into the second deck now. There's, something going, on there he said he saw price Harper break his bat and half and hit. At four hundred twenty foot home run in New York that just doesn't happen he thinks that the ball's juiced, Jordan well I mean there's there's a lot of tells here where Pete Rose coming from. For what guys, they hit king and at a guy who. Embrace, put the, ball in play and usually lead. To a hit hit making, its way, the base pass, where the game is right now it's it's home router bust is is, the league we live in right now. Unfortunately where guys strikeout rates at. An all time high guys are missing balls miss rates skyrocketed egg guys like. Price Harper, are more than happy to strike it out of. Time but, putting that ball into the stands that's, where their head is at. So I could see that. Drawing some displeasure with, a, guy like Pete Rose but again this is truly a get. Off my lawn. Guy you know we talk about Joe Simpson Joe Simpson. Didn't do, anything as a dodger he had no lawn for. People to, get off the No.

"To say nothing of utterly and totally disgusting but pete rose won't be punished for this thatcher limitations is run out there is literally no real punishment in the legal system that will happen whether this young person this jane doe was 16 116 i have a daughter makes me sick to my stomach sixteen years old as pete rose claims whether she was younger as the person pete rose is suing for saying things like this were true claims and that means the only punishment left that actually matters the only place that can serve up justice the only thing to really take away from pete rose is his job in baseball and fox board being the judge and jury and rose being thrust out and away from the only connection to the game he still has and that is through fox sports and i love the people there and i actually know to varying degrees the powerful people who'd have to make that decision and i can speak with some real confidence might say those people are great human beings and they are good people but you have to put that above whatever pressure you feel to protect this guy and i get it pete rose's charming and likable and funding our rask civil a touchstone to a different time.
