"Reynolds he was banned from baseball for gambling cheating is the reason he's making a case to be let back in Pete rose asking commissioner rob Manfred Wednesday to remove his name from the ineligible list in his petition obtained by ESPN rose and his lawyers arguing that rob Manfred recently opted not to punish Astros players who were involved in major game changing rules infractions and as a result you should let roses three decade ban for gambling on baseball while he was a manager of the Cincinnati Reds be overturned is gambling and decades of the Niles was something that rose discussed recently with our don van Natta on backstory if you want to look back which you can I should admitted to in the first time he called me in the office in January of eighty nine but I didn't I had advice from lawyers and things like that so I'm in my late forties I got two young kids and always said I'm gonna be ousted from baseball one how do I raise my kids all I knew my whole life is baseball and that's why you do things that you do you regret that now looking back he was your budget yeah I regret a lot of things look back you know and and it I regret you right now Haitian out eight nineteen eighty nine that's old news everybody forgot about that look to the future don't look at the past if you look at the past all day and all night there's not going to change that I bet on baseball I'm my own team the wind got suspended like a lifetime suspension I've been suspended thirty years not ten fifteen so our best as I can pay the penalty thirty years Major League Baseball is yet to wrap up the red Sox part of its investigation for sign stealing but in its decision regarding the Astros Major League Baseball opted to discipline non players manager general manager front office we clear the Astros organization and the team owner of any knowledge so should be road be reinstated to the guy's a PTI to laugh you know you will go crazy at times you say Carmelo Anthony again today we get you to the Carmel start how long we've been doing Pete rose stories on while one beginning no I don't know I don't think they do is they make my eyes glaze over the years of good argument or not I don't argue what's a good argument for Pete now what's what's a good argument in this case is the Houston Astros and they didn't get this thing to get that love their players are banned for life so why should be reinstated to baseball so that I can go into the hall of fame I I I I I sort of had been convinced by you to put the plaque in as a PDF of baths for this you have worn down over the years on the rolls is the head kick what she wears on the collar of the yeah I think he should be in the hall of fame there should be something on the plaque that indicates why he was kept out for a long period of time in terms of you have a good argument al is no argument he bet on baseball games feel lied about even though you want to have a little bit of space between our years we grew up on P. roles race he's call US steel walls one yeah he know his lover's the New York number he well like the no is no argument but he should be in the whole thing so to see a sample that once that's it we're done back to you lawyers for Pete rose arguing that the lifetime ban is quote vastly disproportionate when compared to baseball's punishment of players who took performance enhancing drugs and the players involved in the science dealing schemes by the Astros in the twenty seventeen seasons the petition saying quote there can't be one set of rules for Mr rose and another for everybody else it all a twenty page petition for reinstatement from Pete rose rose with a minimum like a meeting with commissioner rob Manfred a source from Major League Baseball telling ESPN the league has received roses petition and is reviewing it for background back in nineteen eighty nine rose was permanently banned from baseball by then commissioner Bargy Ahmadi after the investigation led by John dialed the special counsel to Major League Baseball the Dowd report showed that rose had illegally gambled with bookmakers on Major League Baseball games including the Reds wild rose managed Cincinnati and in nineteen eighty nine rose signed an agreement accepting an indefinite suspension from Major League Baseball that was over thirty years ago now for general night ESPN radio "Price signing and I mean the the moves that Dave Dombrowski made that threat sex decided that they probably don't WanNa make anymore those moves were really go for it when now type trades that the dodgers have sort of have held off from until now for the most part. But that's because no one was pushing the dodgers the way that the red sox the division rivals were pushing them. And that's just the the fact of the matter. The dodgers without making that he would splash have won the division for for several years in a row. And you know except for what one time didn't really come close to not doing that so it's just a different reality there that they haven't really had the same competitive pressure right. Yeah well we've covered it a sorry. Sorry we've neglected the twins angle and the angel go here you know. Sheriff twins I guess you know that's that's that's fine It's a it's a win win now. Kind of move from the twin. So I guess you know when you're assessing the wind now adminis- of traded too bad. That's not satisfying 'cause one that's not trying to win. Israeli woman us out but Yeah like Now that that rotation is fortified somewhat And we'll get reinforcements later on in the season when Panetta comes back from his suspension and on rituals fully back from his elbow surgery. And so that's good but now the rotation there will be Ascent Torrisi and my Ada and Bailey the and probably Randy's neck I guess So that that's nice good to have you know good to have in there and good the job to all the dodgers prospects just continue to live in Los Angeles. Yeah shocking truly that you're all still there and Yeah you know. mookie would look good padres uniform to I think the thing about it is that movie just has good. He just has a good baseball player way about him so he's GonNa look compelling in baseball uniforms. 'cause he's fun to watch. Yeah look dodger. Blue though mass beginning of lineups that are pretty good top to bottom the angels lineup. His It's a pretty good unit. Let me just the I don't know if this is Exactly how the batting order will be but on the fan graphs rest resource I depth chart. It Goes Jack Petersen Mike Trout Anthony Ren Don Shohei ohtani Justin Upton Albert Potholes Thomas Stella Andrew Simmons Jayson Castro. That's That's pretty good. It's not bad at all and I think there is Something of a logjam in the angels outfield potentially eventually at some point this season. But I don't think that this move like blocks. Joe Adele nel serious way because adults knocking on the door. But he's it's not knocking loudly like is twenty years old and he just got AAA towards the end of last season and didn't hit. Well they're in in and played in the fall league and did okay but it's not like he is demanding to be on this roster on opening day Doc Petersen's a good player in this gives them the opportunity not to rush Adele and you know updates coming off a a down year to and Peterson's just there for one year so I oh I think he he fits in fine. It's just that the pitching that rotations still headlined by Julio Teheran so that's not ideal I I still. It's headlined by Otani but tiny may not people to pitch many innings. So they'll have to be with him. Yeah I I like that move for Out For the other L. A. for Anaheim. They get mad about that. 'cause yeah it doesn't you know Peterson will be a free agent after the end of the season and so you're right. He doesn't Hasim Flock Adele. He doesn't get in the way of Brandon Marsh whenever marshes ready. He's his timeline. Is presumably a little bit longer. But he's looked really good so Yeah I think that's a that's a good move one. When I heard that when we heard that it might be a four team trade and that Los Angeles might be involved psycho maybe the LA will the other La will get David price somehow and that'd be so nifty and I didn't know what happened Ray? At first I the stripling part of the trade was not reported. It just seemed to be Peterson for Renzo and it was like well. You'd think right in deal. Where pitching his changing teams orange? Observe sort of involved. Hope that they may be what offended eight to get one of those features but they did get wrestling. Who's pretty good pitcher in fact I said that the bills rotation was headlined by Julio Teheran to think stripling his probably better than tyrod so I don't know Ross stripling angels ace. Funny he was sort of swing man with the dodgers could always keep rotation spot with the angels. I think that will be considerably easier. Is that's what he wants to do. So they can better runs it runs. I can try to score more runs than the other team. Even if they're giving up a lot of runsen yet when he was A young utility type player and yeah I don't know where he fits with the dodgers because they have a million guys but he didn't fit that well with the angels after the Renton signing either. Because they've got run. Don't they've gutless Stella. And they've got Fletcher and I. He Simmons obviously so. That's a pretty crowded field too so he he had a A hand or wrist injury think last year that was not unserious. I think he did time on the sixty day injured list. I say all this because awesome. He has the the great honor of having once been a mariners prospect and also a very late similarly draft guideline in the one thing that I am on Simile Gum. I'm doing I want to talk about it ever again because no one cares But I I don't think they'll figure it out because he might just need more time to be fully healthy anyhow. Take all right. Well I guess we've covered it. We could keep talking but people are probably hungry to get this in their ears in curious about about mookie Betts so we will not delay longer than we have to just Scanning to see if there's any new news since we started talking Pete Rose rose asks. MLB for reinstatement gravy. No we're GONNA pass our way through that one. I I have one final thing in would would it have made any difference in terms of the PR response to this. And I think my answer is no but I'm curious frears. Would it have made any difference if they had just dropped this in the middle of the Super Bowl. Would they all got some cover for a day or two Boston Austin. It would not have made a difference for us but I mean I would have very annoyed. Yes that was a nightmare scenario that was discussed internally at the ringer but the they spared us that at least yeah I I mean I hit I guess so I guess the fact that that is typically the biggest sports story of the year and the game had a big ending come from behind and all that that they could only crowd out any other sports related news. But it's not like Boston. Fans would've felt any differently or complained in less so off. I think it's good. I think it's good that you just have to. You just have to endure being you know pilloried by baseball types regardless when new trade a recent MVP except for those two executives in the American league who are for flexibility. If they're red sox success I assume Kenwood not quote. Red sox executive levels Lena okay. He clarified in subsequent subsequent to that it's rival executives. Not Red SOX executive. Let me ask you another question about the the PR perception. What if this had just happened without the months of buildup without them kind of trying to condition us to expect us? What if we had woken up to news that a rookie bets traded to the dodgers? Now what would that have been the reaction. I don't think that it would have changed things all that much because I think it's just too obvious. The motivations is our two transparent and I think those motivations rightly bother us and so I think that it's it's just one of those trades that it's pretty hard to pr your way out of and I think that's probably a good thing 'cause they would be concerning turning if if you could I guess but no. I don't think building up to it. I don't think building up to it. Changes it dramatically because the the motivation to get below the competitive balance tax was an obvious one. I mean like their choice of general manager. Whatever booms Stylus? It's not that it's a it's an IRO. It's title inflation officer. Yeah Yeah Baseball's very funny. I'm not making fun of him. I making tidal title inflation. To be clear he didn't pick that I would imagine I think that when that's your choice your path through the winter is those sort of general contours of. It are pretty obvious so no. I don't think that would have changed things to dramatically. Yeah it's someone asked you in your chat yesterday about like at this point was that situation unsalvageable anyway. After months and months of rumors and the red SOx making it clear that pets was on the block could they even have kept him at that point or would the feelings be so afraid that it it just wouldn't work and I think you rightly responded that no could keep you can just always keep McKee back once you have a mookie. Betts you can just always hold Hold onto him and again tight. You know as long as he's a hugging person. I don't like You can always do that and it will always be okay. Let's to say the right offer was there because he is the second best player baseball essentially a I think everyone would have accepted that. I mean he might still have feelings hurt by the exact rack but I I think it would have been okay. So yeah I if this had broken out of nowhere with no warning it would have been more more shocking in a concentrated. It's entreated way like our our shock with sort of distributed over a longer time period but if this was one of those situations where you make something public. I don't know if they made their feeling so public I think they probably regretted John Henry saying that he just wanted to save money because he he later tried to walk that back but he had already said it. So Oh man yeah so that was not the best messaging but if this was one of those cases where it's like well we'll will float this publicly to see what the reaction is. The reaction was pretty negative so they they knew what what they were going to get when they made the steel and they still made it so yep they knew they knew and if they didn't then that's that's pretty goofy but I think they knew and then And then they went and did it anyway and so for the first time in a long time I feel genuine sympathy for Red Sox fans who've just had it real good and now have it worse in a way that was preventable. And that's a bummer. Yeah Yeah but again. We're happy for Kenta. Yes sure theft and yet for bloom like I assume he knew that at this would be one of his duties when he took off..

"On the west side Blackhawks are playing very well there three points out of the final playoff spot but the real story is the mustache is back in the building your call one of our favorites and one of the true Titans in the history of Chicago sports there's Papa bear there's coach there's Phil caught shares Q. and I'm not sure the order maybe we could debate that on a different day I don't know maybe will even do it today but what Joel Quenneville in the Blackhawks accomplished in this last decade was phenomenal and it's something nobody thought whatever happened with the way that franchise was run for so many years and they were perennially not only the worst team in the NHL the worst franchise in the NHL but the worst arguably the worst amongst all the franchises across all leagues on the continent of North America and then the script is flipped in you get tapes and you get Kane and keep his awesome in Seabrook is great in rocky says we're gonna do it different hosts a government health problems and you hire Joel Quenneville and the rest is history so a tip of the cap to Joel Quenneville tonight I hope that they do wear it on TV I'd like to see the video tribute I'm hoping for that to be a big night the hawks are going on Patrick Kane picked up as one thousand point with a a secondary helper and the I think that was the fourth call the night on Sunday so they're gonna celebrate Patrick Kane becoming one of I think only like ninety or ninety one players in NHL history with that many points ninety players in NHL history with that many points and they're gonna under Joel Quenneville who is back with the Florida Panthers short in the playoffs in the east and one of their first moves a did they brought Brian Campbell in yes and they brought in a goal tender and that goaltender was horrible if you weigh and what they do with him they said the Golden Russia and leave us alone then we went to the cage also that money would come off the books in my right or wrong I think that is he was terrible yes crystal ball you a was terrible but between hosa Campbell sharpie who is already here and everything that they had going on board they were hitting on all cylinders then yeah role players like Adam birch and that this thing started heading in the right direction you felt it was happening against Detroit the previous year and then it clicked on all cylinders ninety and there it was choose a great coach he's proving that again at this latest stop in Florida he's one of the winningest coaches in the history of the league and he knows how to work his magic perhaps it was time for Q. to move on a couple of years a when the hawks this Mister fourteen months ago when the Blackhawks dismissed them I get it sometimes the voice has to change ten years is a long time to be together right I'm sure is the battle should be on the ice sometimes the balance between being a head coach in the gel man absolutely and when that starts becoming not so much a priority but boy that becomes the side show and not all the production is there toward the ice then its problem little bit of a fight today I guess doesn't matter whose fault is learner something's gotta change jobs you is the one that had to go a little bit of a fight we understand a practice today sounds like tapes was given Duncan keep the business had his Jersey couple for seven minutes sounds like more than your average of pushing and shoving but I'm gonna happen you know yeah that's a long time to be together don't know what the genesis of that whole thing was but we're gonna try to find out as the show goes along a little scrap today a practice that's good get the blood going nineteen a morning skate greater than two that's what I like to say as a player yeah I would agree although yeah I would I would agree he finished slightly higher in our rankings of the all time Blackhawks Duncan Keith has been sensational them and nobody is crying about incredible I told you that we should have got rid of one which well we got up for something so good you know for good what could happen if the morning skate this is Ted Davis is that that that setting a practice you know what happened one guy in a joking mood the other guy's not a joking you know how like you and I'll send you Neil a guy you need to look at you the only guy that guy gets checked because you keep the lawn on there it's all over the morning skate era is the equivalent of for though the uninitiated asked what was wrong it's like it's Saturday walkthrough in the NFL it's it's true around on game day above the NBA you know like you just kind of get in yes what may be a little bit you're walking around there enough to take a shower and get yourself belonging to blend so you got a good times happening fighting during the morning skate that I got to say that's a that's an odd one that's what happens when the presence again there's always going up into the city the mustache shield one comes back into the city thank your rights maybe they know that the mustache and one was in the building already and he might have been check out the checking out the early action I'm like stunned to hear that I really you're fighting and at the morning skate but I've been in this yeah any bar you know what I would sign it's election day for Major League Baseball hall of fame we're gonna find out who is in we were just talking about this with cap will Derek Jeter beat the second player only the second player ever it will he follow his teammate from year ago Mariana Rivera as a one of the only guys to ever get one hundred percent of the vote that's always been kind of a silly thing and nobody deserves it or I'm gonna use my vote to get other guys and because you know the argument for a lot of years was walking of you juniors going to get a and I'm not gonna vote for him I'm gonna use it to clean up some old at that stupid right yeah you vote if you're a baseball writer can clean up all the old business you want with her and bowed and if your baseball writer did you watch your covered baseball during Ken Griffey junior's marvelous spectacular career there is no rationale or justification good enough for saying that I'm gonna leave them off it's stupid it's always been stupid but for some reason for the first like seventy years they were doing well but well what what I'm saying baseball writers are Patty yeah alright yeah you're right well that's what you're gonna try to rationalize it's silly some heated Babe Ruth it still right you know what our fire you know Babe Ruth was an anatomist I can't make Reggie Jackson and it's it's stupid however you try to slice it or rationalize it it's dumb and they finally got it in every one of them that's entrusted with this took it seriously enough last year say yeah it's pretty good yeah yeah you can't leave him off your ballot I'm sorry but you have to you have to be a key to get a hundred percent don't show is it because you're gonna be the two isn't a mandatory you have to like you and that wasn't the only other guy that was close Seaver he was and at first I want to kind of maybe to New York thing I don't know if it was like ninety yeah I think I think I've been on a record I can't pass the question of Derek Jeter in play for the Yankees if you play for the brewers when you go you know would be loved I mean it wasn't counting stat three at thirty four hundred and it is your to your writing you know me I'm the first to put those normally but thirty four hundred hits speaks to a level like a certain level of longevity and production that has to be noted I I do agree with that you're not only did he have those thirty four hundred hits it it that's just an accumulation static comics that I get it the guy's career slash line is three ten three seventy seven for forty Derek Jeter was good for over seventy wins above replacement in his career I mean I don't care if you played for the San Andres or the brewers say that's accounting staff to war well you calculated tried it also yeah but it only three and a half yeah if you look at it the average street after years early on where he was pretty good six six seven yeah right like the prime of his career you know I mean he was a great player I don't care where you play Derek Jeter was exceptional at this game probably over loved as a defensive player that's okay that always happens when guys right of way negative war player not shocked in then defense negative defensive war and I get that a lot of what he did a lot of his legacy is made on those are great October moments in being a Yankee afford him that opportunity the reputation yeah you know your your their year end nonstop to force feed it down your throat Derek Jeter along with two other players one is not in the hall one is in the hall are the only three players to do this I Sholl feet further three thousandth hit run yes there's two grand slams a homeowner yes hold on okay all right I'll say Wade Boggs is one of a very good and he's off and he's with yeah he did it with Tampa Tampa and then the other guy had three thousand it's but it's not the hall he's not a hall Roberto Clemente no he's in the fall you know it's got to be then well okay we got to think of a few guys like Pete rose rose incorrect Rafael Palmeiro incorrect is it is it somebody that will bonds no somebody that will be all in favor say three thousand all right probably doesn't actually is is a steroid guy yes he's also very in the media these days Hey rob yes good trivia question mark so a rod Boggs and Jeter all had their three summer house okay come on over and they'll play for the Yankees how bout that's true yeah and I believe Wade Boggs was a reason why the whole thing took away the players right to decide what Jersey got you going with people are gonna deals with Tampa he went in with Tampa yeah the hat is in there yeah yeah do they have Chris is right he was making a half motion behind merc and yet I could see it so I was at all so happy there's a great line member before the red Sox finally broke the curse HBO did I have ever doing another god who knows why doing another documentary about the curse of the Bambino it Dennis Leary whose life long red Sox fan in New England or had the great line he said if you would've told my father that Wade Boggs would run it would be on the back of a horse being paraded around Yankee Stadium is a World Series champions for gonna have would have exploded I didn't really like in his Boston accent it's a letter is that was the norm say that and I bet that didn't sit well with red Sox fans for a very long time but now it doesn't really matter because the red Sox have had a one oh forty seven and one.

"Another day another ballpark Kevin Harlan and loved his job but the newly minted head of security from Major League Baseball had to admit it was getting a bit monotonous on the surface. So many of these stadiums have their own mystique from Green Monster Monster at Boston's Fenway Park to the Ivy covered brick outfield wall at Chicago's Wrigley Field each place had its own quirks its own personality but underground they were all the same the long concrete tunnels the bustle of activity everyone doing his or her part to make sure the game going on above them went off without a hitch but there was another side to what was happening a darker side when he first I started touring the Ballpark's Helen was surprised at how easy it was to gain entry into players club houses they were packed with all sorts of characters none of whom had any form of security clearance that included the vast entourage of slime balls that accompanied Pete Rose rose everywhere he went they were big guys with bulging muscles slicked back hair and pagers clip to their belts Helen a new type right from his days in the nypd he could spot bookies from a mile away. Hallinan had heard the rumors that Pete Rose was a profligate gambler earlier and once he saw the kind of people pete surrounded himself with he began to suspect the whisperers were true however this wasn't some scrub Auber journeyman outfielder this was pete rose the hit king it was only a matter of time until he was enshrined into the Hall of Fame But if HAL ammon suspicions proved to be correct it didn't matter how influential Pete was if it turned out Pete's gambling habits had spread to baseball he would be in violation of one of the MLB as most iron clad rules. Anyone who bad on a major league baseball game would be banned from the sport forever..

Pete Rose's rise from unheralded cross backed the hometown hero also examined the beginnings of his entry into the dark world of underground beddings thanks and how it impacted his personal and professional life next week we'll follow. Pete's continued obsession with gambling and find out about how it landed him on the M. L. Bees in eligible list as far as athletes go every once in a while there comes along star that has no real discernible talent that is they do not excel in any clear way. They aren't the fastest don't display incredible smarts or instinct for the game. They're relatively under sized in often overlooked by professional all scouts but they have something about them. The swagger unabashed confidence and infectious and motivating drive. Have that pushes them past the competition. Pete Rose was the poster boy for this type of athlete at five eleven two hundred pounds stocky but not incredibly strong he swung the bat with a tight quick swing almost as though he was trying to slap the ball more than slug it it was known for his unceasing motor his relentless bass running his charging sacrificial style every sport has these players players these so-called Hustle guys they remind children and aspirational amateurs alike. You don't need the special ingredients of genetic lottery. Sometimes success is very much just hard work but rarely do. We count these type of players as the best. I ever play their game. Pete Rose was an exception to this rule. He rode the wave of his dedication to one one of the greatest individual careers baseball has ever seen raking seemingly unbreakable records winning multiple championships and MVP and making an incredible seventeen all star appearances with such a track record. It seemed inevitable that he would make baseball's hall of fame but Pete Rose wasn't just reckless in bullheaded on the field he had a hidden side to his personality body that would forever prevent him from getting baseball's greatest award. Peter Edward Rose Rose was born on April fourteenth nineteen forty one in Cincinnati. He's working class. Anderson Ferry neighborhood. His Father Harry was was a skilled semi pro football player and his mother Laverne had been talented high school softball player as well. Pete and Harry's relationship ship was special and informed much of who he later became Harry was an emblem of discipline every day in full work attire fire for his job as a bank teller leather shoes starched button-down shirt and uncomfortable slacks hairy would sprint up the hill leading adding to his house. If his football team lost over the weekend he would do it twice. Pete Watch this dedication and learned from a young age that desire heart and commitment could propel you forward in unexpected ways as a teenager rose was lightweight and undersized is but what he lacked in physical abilities he made up for with endless desire and boundless hustle rose was a star athlete late at Western hills high school playing both varsity football and baseball. He was known for his hard charging relentless style but those weren't the only qualities Harry hit instilled in his son even though he taught his son to never drink a drop of alcohol into I always get a good night's sleep. The elder rose was an avid gambler on the weekends. Harry liked to bet on horses is at the river downs race track. It wasn't unusual for Pete even when he was a young child to be. Intel that was life from the Anderson Ferry neighborhood. Pete loved going to the races with his dad he was fascinated by the analytical side of betting sure or luck played a big part but he also saw how when Harry took the time to really comb through the form guide he could emerge victorious more more often than not. There was nothing quite like watching the Horse Harry had picked crossed the line in first place the thrill of victory it was sweet indeed but not as sweet as the thrill of payout whenever Harry one big he would treat his son to an extravagant meal at their favorite restaurant. Pete loved the satisfaction of knowing Harry's careful strategy had helped them come out on top just like his athletic career. Pete saw how putting in the extra work at the race track could lead to significant reward that hard work translated slated to Pete's performances on the baseball field. He wasn't the strongest. He wasn't the fastest but he was relentless. It wasn't sexy but he thrived as the man to push his limits. He was also a natural leader. Pete's relentless intensity rubbed off on his his teammates inspired them to work harder run faster care a little more he truly embodied the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote that served as Western turnhill highs slogan. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Unfortunately enthusiasm awesome alone wasn't enough to get someone into the big leagues when Nineteen Year Old Pete graduated from High School in Nineteen sixty pro scouts didn't. I didn't think he had the physical tools to make it in the majors. College Ball wasn't in the cards. Either Pete wasn't exactly a gifted student. Luckily he had another option. The minor leagues at the time. Pete's Uncle Buddy was doing some scouting for Cincinnati's major league baseball team the reds after Pete went undrafted buddy convinced Cincinnati's upper management to give his nephew a minor minor league contract. It was a low risk high reward move. If Pete's physical development took the next step he could become a valuable player as well as a box office draw. Nothing resonated with fans more than a local kid making good after all and if Pete failed it was no big deal he was a no name prospect from Anderson Ferry not a high profile rookie who was expected to become the face of the franchise pete sign the contract with no hesitation even though he was getting sent to the Geneva red legs in the Class D New York Penn League. Although it was pro ball it was just about as far from the major leagues as a player Cadet. It's hard to know exactly how much he was making but chances are pete was barely early making a living in the minors today. A Minor League baseball players average starting salary is twelve hundred dollars per month in his his day. Pete was making tiny fraction of that and while there was a pot of gold waiting at the end of the proverbial rainbow. There was no guarantee not pete would make it. They're on generally only ten percent of all minor leaguers. Make it to the major league but the long hard hard road ahead of Pete didn't bother him. Keep your head down and surged forward. It was what his father taught him. It was the code that would bring him. Mm to the Big Leagues Pete's bet on himself paid off after three seasons in the minors. He got the call he had been dreaming of. Since he was a kid. The reds wanted him to join them for spring training ahead of the nineteen sixty three season but being part of spring training leaning wasn't the same as making the final twenty eight man roster although Pete had come a long way some of the reds coaches still had their doubts he was still slow and he had a hitch in his swing is pete was going to make the cut he'd have to prove his worth in the only way he knew how with unrelenting hustle the. May Have only been meaningless preseason games in February and March but p treated spring training training Mike it was the world series after one particularly memorable performance against the New York Yankees Superstars Whitey Ford in Mickey Mantle. We're discussing how pete had caught their eye. They called him Charlie.

"The beginning of the day if you got up Ron based in Vegas or the Pacific time zone and watch the open championship we used to call the British open now the FCC fines you if you don't say the open championship that started earlier than expected because of torrential rain either coming in so that was a big deal and then a lot of people locked in to one of the largest crowds of second largest crowd ever at Cooperstown the Major League Baseball hall of fame induction ceremony which I thought was fantastic had a really cool class a little bit of a controversial class which we'll get to that was a huge day that a big night Major League Baseball late into the night were a couple of teams of shoring back from the dead the National League wild card race is amazing and a big topic here by the trade deadline here at the end of the month July thirty first one which teams are gonna be selling and which teams are gonna buys the giants are so hot they might keep Bumgarner Cleveland still in the wild card race they might keep Trevor Bauer said a lot of big decisions to come up with baseball but today with baseball and I'm gonna get the three big storylines here as we open it up a baseball today is all about the hall of fame and as I begin I think there's only two or three days a year that's it that you should be talking about Pete rose on the radio and this is one of them I am an expert on the Pete rose topic four of our variety reasons I co hosted the P. Rochelle years ago I live in the same town as Pete I see I have on my radio show and I'm trying to get into the hall of fame I'm trying to do my part but I'm very careful not to do a lot of people shells his people say it's lazy Hey no it's a dead zone it's the summer people want to get the phones go on with Pete rose on the opposite of that I bring in the Pete rose topic with a sledge hammer on days like today nights like tonight hall of fame induction ceremony day one day two would be the vote for the hall of fame which Pete is in a part of and that's a big day we find out is getting into the hall of fame or not how can you not talk about Pete rose when they come up with the ballots and then thirdly would be if Pete makes news if you would make news by doing something saying something gets in the news something happens in his life then you could talk about it but that's it because Pete rose now was that the topic that we use today so tonight we're gonna talk about Pete rose in the hall of fame in bonds and Clemens because Major League Baseball now is at a crossroads after today as they are running out a hall of Famers after today with Harold Baines getting in Edgar Martinez least met Mike Mussina all debatable hall of Famers who had to wait they got in I think it's fantastic Roy Halladay got in I'm thrilled by that hello they only had two hundred and three wins only twenty one hundred and seventeen case typically not a hall of Famer he got in no problem with that but going forward you got to make up your mind on who's going in or not and get the hell off the fence because people are on the fence should be involved in this conversation you have to have strong really strong opinions I can get on the radio at a five five two one two four two two seven what's it gonna take to get certain guys in your heroes who obviously were involved with performance enhancing drugs no debate they were involved with it from balco having to go up to the federal building Capitol Hill the Rayburn building and defend themselves playing in the steroid era of baseball nothing wrong playing in the steroid era of baseball if your Derek Jeter and you didn't take steroids but if you were guys who took steroids got caught well the Mitchell report we're connected to dirty club houses and dirty steroid dealers it was obvious we're gonna keep down the hall of fame what is the hall of fame writers get older and unfortunately retire or pass on younger hall of fame voters are gonna come in who were millennials and bloggers they didn't go see the great players of the game in the sixties and seventies and all they know about baseball is the nineties and two thousands and they're going to be voting coming up so it's a tough topic what I like to keep Pete rose involved in this topic because I want to see him get into the hall of fame and the only way you can let Pete rose in the hall of fame is one word forgiveness you have to forgive him for gambling on baseball when he was a manager not a player for the Cincinnati Reds we know the rules you're not allowed to gamble on baseball he did he broke the rules to make matters worse he lied about it he lied about it to me he told me on the radio yeah I didn't do it okay he said it for years and then he finally came clean and he wrote a book I needed to make money or not wrote a book and came clean on that and then finally clear the air on gambling as a manager little too late I think we all agree but the greatest hitter of all time also has another stack to no one ever has he's won the most games of any one who's ever lived and put on a baseball uniform so I believe that Pete rose while he's alive should gain induction into the baseball hall of fame I don't expect everybody to agree with me but those who do agree with me have to form an army and help Pete out before he dies who is the worst thing would be a peak that's in the hall of fame ten years after he died I was fortunate enough to MC Cann Stabler's hall of fame banquet in canton Ohio and he was dead and he wasn't there well as kids wore in his teammates wore and for whatever reason the pro football hall of fame didn't think the snake was a hall of fame money obviously was until after he was dead so that's the worst thing you can do with a hall of Famer is make them wait until after they die because that is the ultimate price to pay for any baseball player or any athlete so my tie that in later throughout the show with bonds and Clemens who I believe should not be in the hall of fame because they knowingly took performance enhancing drugs to gain more fame and to build bigger stats to make them a mortal in the hall of fame Barry Bonds never would have more than four hundred home runs if you didn't take steroids he started taking performance enhancing drugs and he was able to get over seven hundred he probably what I got to five hundred for those who say he would've been a lot to be a hall of Famer Barry Bonds would've been a great player in the hall of fame but he would be in no where near Babe Ruth Henry Aaron Willie Mays no where near he didn't have that power no where near him to be that type of player and he became better than all of them as a power hitter and Roger Clemens was stacking up saw young after cy young after saw young and playing with the Yankees lateness career at though where everybody thought he was on performance enhancing drugs well you can connect the dots the credit to Clemens is at least have the balls to go up in front of Capitol Hill in Congress in clear his name and he did so there are some differences here so certain McGuire obvious cheaters do they get in well look if you want to make it hard you don't let a man if you want to forgive him but make it clear on that plaque that they cheated you can do that but I mean it's twenty nineteen everybody's got to get up to speed with this the game is changing to the point now where guys are getting into the hall of fame with less than four hundred home runs Harold Baines at three hundred eighty four and eighty nine three thousand hits very good had a very good player played a long time Mike Mussina didn't get three hundred wins yet to seventy he did not three thousand strikeouts the most very good pitcher we're lowering the bar on the hall of fame I'm gonna have to continue to lower it because now even though home runs are flying out baseball every five freaking minutes of every game we're seeing more strikeouts than ever and batting averages are plummeting so you're really gonna let guys in with career to forty nine batting averages just because they had a bunch of home runs but didn't get the five hundred and how could you have a hall of fame going forward if Alex Rodriguez Barry Bonds Roger Clemens and Pete rose Arnett you could say that those are ten of the best baseball players of all time definitely in the top twenty ever again Hey rod bonds Plemons and Pete rose rose to be on the mount Rushmore most hits most wins and everything that he's done so today is a day to think about it and it's good way to tie in baseball in general and the Jews Paul and everything that's happening there the other thing that is driving me nuts is Tyree kill I believe that tie we kill of the Kansas City Chiefs as a fog I love the word thug I use a five times a day I don't tie it to race color religion or anything else if you intimidate a woman or if you commit crimes in you intimidate other humans you're a burglar you're a guy goes out of beach women you're a bully your thought sure Kansas City Chiefs have the biggest fog in the league right now in Tyree killed was not suspended by the NFL after a thorough investigation which I believe was thorough because they didn't have enough evidence to kick him out of the lake in regards to the conduct policy the personal conduct policy but I know the history of Tyree kill I know all about his past behavior with the same woman who he's had a past with which is really ugly dating back to when she was pregnant when they're in college Oklahoma state university dismiss hill days after a domestic violence arrest in December of twenty fourteen the incident involved this woman who is the mother of his child the police report in Oklahoma allege that hill quote throw around like a rag doll I'm sure in the face shallow water repeatedly punched her in her pregnant stomach and choked her she was pregnant with the child in question the one whose arm was recently broken at the age of three that is the big one hill in college pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation was sentenced to three years probation now what I hosted a four hour radio show today another platform in a couple of attorneys called in just callers I said how in god's name can you punch in beat up a pregnant woman and get probation and guys called in and told me we don't have any priors this and that she doesn't want to come and testify a lot of things could happen here even though he was arrested and charged but he got probation because in this country celebrities politicians athletes get probation as other people go to jail on first offenses because I don't have high profile attorneys they don't have any money they don't have the ability to buy themselves out of this to get probation right we'll agree on that right to go right to jail but Tyree kill did not he was able to continue to play football and John Dorsey the GM of the chief drafted him in the fifth round he should have been a second round pick or a late first round pick but because of his inferior size most people out in the second or third round he dropped to the fifth because the league most of the league looked around and said this guy's a fog we don't want to be involved in our organization but the.

I'm around it off Clemens in two thousand fourteen and thirty five percent in two thousand nineteen Fifty-nine bonds in open fourteen thirty four nineteen you went to fifty nine. Teams at sixty doubles. When you had fifty two is the most the had and Martinez in big Papi comp- com. Comparing playing the field and de aging anger Martinez. Fourteen hundred and three games as a D H. Big Papi two thousand twenty nine. Martinez. Play five sixty four games at third and twenty eight games at first big Papi, play two hundred and seventy eight games at first base. And those the only time we played on the field a couple of times, you know, in the postseason, but that's it. So he was. The Email back to Minnesota. Maybe maybe play the outfield one point. Now, you know, it's too much lumber. Let's go to Nikki, Rockville centre. Nikki you're on the fan. Telling me, my man, hey, how you doing brother? All right. I'm all right. I'm lifelong Yankee fan. I'm on nineteen years old. I yeah. And I don't know how Martinez guy in the hall of fame, and it'd be explained to me how Babe Ruth kind the hall of fame too. And I grew how did that guy get on? And what the hell's he talking about? First of all Edgar Martinez defined designated hip and look at his numbers the guy deserved to go on the hall of fame. He crossed the ball. He was dominant. All he's years looked at his staff is average, and I love that. How guy telling you? He's a like one Yankee fan, but he can't tell you that Roger Clemens went up for the hall of fame. If Barry Bonds is on the ballot is I love guys like that guys. I live in their mom's basement, they know everything from a keyboard. I love those guys. Unbelievable Martinez, do desserts. Hall of fame has nothing to do with Pete Rose rose freaking bet on baseball. You don't get in negative things that approve it. You'll get in when he's dead. That's the deal could have fixed it, he didn't fix it. So that's it. But but I gotta come on in question. Edgar Martinez after telling as a lifelong baseball fans yesterday you see him and is questionable. But you gotta look at his numbers for how dominant he was for the five years. He during us steroid take his five best seasons. And they're in the peak of the steroid era. I mean, that's that's like you gotta take that into account. I mean, my problem's not what you I love you. But I think the call is that come on in a like a lifelong fan, and this and that can you tell me about baseball. I mean, there's like someone looking at a number yourself before you are you know, it is. But everybody is you know, everybody goes in got an argument except Mariana. Yeah. I didn't think what team that was going to get in. Because it's either so long I wonder if he got in because a lot of people went, oh this is last year. Let me voter meant. I didn't think it was gonna make it doesn't bother me. The guys. I didn't think it was gonna make it Pete Rose. Like, I said he when he dies he might put him in and asked about how did they roof being funny, but Babe Ruth right crew? Said. But.

"Yep. Really hoping that John knows on this trip you and invite him to sing. Filed that he goes. And nobody knows that he's there. And then he pops out like on day, four only thing better would be as if eve Frank goes on this trip. That would be great from the Bronx. They're all more, welcome. They're all welcome to go the money. Yeah. So no, we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna have a good time. I I'll decide we should have a contest on the side. We'll see I'll let you go. Now. See now, the two choices you're running so much trouble. Their choices are Carol waltz or Frank. Copy. That. Wins Amelia, a multi family. Take Joe, listen, my kids are all schools like he take the young kids, and I don't wanna take the take Michael too. But, but I'm taking Libya within California, February you wanna go which is great and eleven days is rough to take you can't you can't not that when they start starting a new school year, so Joey, but you always always working around the world. God bless and doing so good would be perfect for you. Yeah. He's the best. So we'll see. We'll stay listen. That's the least of our problems. We're just we're gonna have a blast. And now the way it looks now Frank. We're doing. Yes. So you, and I gotta get you different guys. Only come on. Meal now in Italy that won't be a problem. One of us would probably get arrested. I mean, three of us one would probably be in lockup St. Perla mentioned it yesterday that the the hotel that you stay in Rome is right across from the embassy of the United States. There's a problem of us. Yes. We're going. Oh my gosh. It'll be some international incident would occur. Stupid. Like, I would like there would be like a faux pas in an Italian restaurant or something. I'd be ushered out. Valid because problem we'd be asked to leave the country. Last thing that I would do is get mad in a foreign country. That's the dumbest movement of what were they can take your passport or that second. And then you're screwed. This former I guess it was a former marine in honor. It was not honorably discharged the Marie lesson Russian. Now, he's in Russia now this guy and he began to get taken offense that the Russians are keeping this guy. This is a the KGB ploy because we have one of their the Russian gal that's here for five boroughs, you know, and she's here. And so I think this is a key ploy. But they're putting this guy on trial in Russia. The news. Waylon? Interesting interesting situation here, I'm not sure what to believe, quite frankly. But according to according to a lawyer who I believe he hits his state-appointed lawyer. So I'm not necessarily Paul Whelan's best interests at heart over there. He was found carrying Russian state secrets on a thumb drive. So he was arrested. A couple of before New Year's Eve and was charged with carrying out an act of espionage. So who knows what to believe when it comes to the Russian criminal Justice system. Their idea of due process is not necessarily what we would consider due process. And so scared to see what happened say the big news locally. And we'll follow that story for you. As well Marian Rivera it one of the greatest baseball players of all time and just a sweetheart gentlemen of a guy Yankees reliever five world championships, unanimous the first ever player to be unanimously elected to the the hall of fame. And this is great. And we're not surprised, but how about that? It's just great because you never know the baseball writers alley gets snarky sometimes. There was one who was saying he wasn't going. Era, and I maybe he withheld his ballot or he did vote from whatever. But if anybody is deserving of a unanimous Volya, he's the guy I mean, this is a dumb, and the the interesting thing, and I didn't realize this last night until I was reading a couple of tweets from Joel Sherman. The great baseball columnist for the New York Post Marian Rivera was discovered by accident by the Yankees. He grew up in an area in Panama, which is not exactly a hotbed for baseball players. The Yankees kind of stumbled on him they drafted him. And he was originally drafted as a shortstop. Yeah. You know, what then converted to a pitcher think about an idea think had made him the shortstop, do, you know, the, you know, the the scout that found I don't know that think about this. If they find him in Panama again. Pitcher a position player. They bring them into camp. He makes the team which is a miracle ended up itself, and then becomes the most dominant closer in major league baseball history and unanimously elected all just to understand how that's never happened before. Babe Ruth was not unanimously elected to the hall of fame. Okay. Thank area now known as the first ever elected to the the and you have to remember that the baseball writers in all of these things would hall of fame. Whether it's football baseball all of them. They all have their own agendas. These baseball writers, they wield a power that very few have. And so they feel they need to dictate who should be in. And who shouldn't and whatever it should be based on what you did on the baseball field. But very often we find in baseball and in football. They wait the stuff that these guys do off the field in their voting which should not be now. Obviously Marian Rivera clean as a whistle. Never heard anything bad about the guy guys a class act from top to bottom the guy in his final season. Joe would go to different stadiums where he was finishing his career at remember that like in the Oakland A's case there was awarded we've been working there for twenty something years. He went in and visited her, bro. Hug during talked with her for fifteen minutes, or whatever he wanted to do things differently. This guy is awesome. Of course, it should be unanimously. The interesting thing will be next year because Derek. Geeta will be on the ballot next year. Does he go in with a unanimous vote? Will he be the only one to go in because the class is really not that great in terms of getting seventy five percent of the vote. So it'll be interesting to see what happens next year for Derek jeeter. I got a feeling he may be the only guy in the hall of fame next year. He mean with everybody else has gone with only jeeter we'll be jeeter will get the seventy seventy five percent of the vote to get in. Because Curt Schilling was on the bubble. Again. You got about sixty percent of the vote. In baseball. Speaking the Yankees have a beautiful poster I have to send a note to Donny Mattingly, his Mattingly charities in Evansville, Indiana where it was a couple of weeks ago. Donny baseball Yankee forever and Joe thanks for making this event. Great Don Mattingly, I would love to see. And I know statistically and you talk injuries. But love the Don Mattingly as well. Just you know, if you put anybody in for courage in class, you know. Well, the players would have to do that now because he's not on the ballot anymore, and to be honest Mattingly was a great Yankee. But his injuries really hampered his his ability to get into the hall of fame. He just doesn't have the numbers for other first baseman that are comparable. So and then win a championship. Only made it to what the playoffs once twice. Wasn't that wasn't his fault of? No. Of course. Not. But a great player. But I just don't think he's he's a hall of Famer as sounds like it'd be sports announcer doesn't he throw that in there? But for the heart put him in there. That's where you get into that argument. Leaving Pete Rose rose to begin one hundred percent. And here's why because he's one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He's the hits leader all of a sudden stuff. But again, the gambling thing is what's gonna keep him out house. You cannot gamble on the game any better on the game while he was playing. That's why he's not I, you know. You said, but if you said if you're going to do for statistics only, right? The Frankie can do statistics only. Impeach PL should be. Four thousand hits only baseball player ever to over four thousand. But you know, I I know he's also borderline, but the person I'd really like to see in the hall of fame, and obviously somewhat biased as a met fan is Gil Hodges. There's a good good. Good. Good. The people that are in the hall of fame and their record. You'll Hodges is superior. And then you look at Gill Hodges contributions as a manager Gil Hodges absolutely belongs Adler as a player or a man. You want to flip it to the other sports like football Lawrence Taylor was was obviously a hall of Famer he wasn't an absolute locked into the hall of fame. There are a lot of people in that room when the voting was taking place. Peter King the great writer, formerly from Sports Illustrated. I talked about this because he has a vote about how guys did not want to vote Lawrence Taylor into the hall of fame because of all of his off the field that yeah, we should have nothing to do with gerrad. And that's what that's what Peter King was the one who had to present the argument for Lawrence to be in the hall of fame. You can't base him on anything that he did off the field. You have to do what he did on the field. Got you got. Royds? For instance. Do you see that's the bigger issue now Pepsi game? Barry bonds. What about in the hall of fame? But no question, but so habit drug use drug use in your wall. No, I don't think because. Okay. To take off forget for years until it was outlawed not too long ago about ten years ago. And Fettah means we ran rampant through baseball. People took Greenies all the time. They put a coffee to get extra energy. So there was a competitive advantage there. The problem is is the steroid thing. I think what the what the baseball writers are doing. Now are saying if I let one in that I gotta let them all in. And so what we're gonna do is. We're not gonna let any of them in the one is deserving of it even before he started thinking it was Mary bonds. You're listening. It's about a lot more than sports. It's about the culture. It's what you can't contributions beyond what's measurable on a piece of paper at what point does character matter at what point does fair play matter at what point does cheating matter. So none of it when it comes to politics Franken. So that's the question. Right. So if someone's doing a great job as mayor or president or governor should they be reelected if they're doing drugs getting drunk or just just personal life is is questionable. Yeah. Yes. But also the steroids things to get back to the real quick steroids. Does not make you stronger. It helps you recover from your work. That's that's the reason why those guys took it because they wanna work out longer and harder and they wanted to be able to recover quicker. That's why they took those things I said when I was working at doing stories, I'll be so afraid to put steroids in my body. I never I never taste never tried cocaine. You got be nuts to try any of that. Joe? If you're doing steroids in the eighties. Fair would not be here right now. Look at all the people who did steroids at that time. They're not around here. I mean, you know to your point, and we'll move on the people also Donald Trump, never drank. Right. Look at him at seventy two guys got more energy than anybody else in the world, and Bruce Springsteen and politics aside and both count. Please Bruce beastie never was a drug. I looked at him on stage. He's he's a couple of years older than me. And the guy could smoke. Anybody on stage at three reports that Donald Trump trick sixteen diet cokes a day. Site. We should start doing a seven twenty one with you on the radio. Dr.

On Cincinnati's own hit king Pete Rose rose holding court yesterday signing autographs. Which of course I'm sorry I bet on baseball Pete Rose Right that's what he would sign for certain price USA today, Bob, Nightingale talked to him in rose said that. In his opinion the game, that he loves, has a, whole lot of problems, right now He talked about the baseball being juiced, he's convinced that they're doing something to up the number. Of home runs he's frustrated by the number, of? Strikeouts that he sees watching the game and he says. That at this point in his life, he finds it difficult to, sit down and watch baseball he says the way it's played these days Is not the game that he grew up loving gain that he says he gave his life to seventy seven years old. Now and talked about some, of the problems with the game yesterday said he doesn't understand the fascination with the super long home runs and says that at. Some point if they let you get two runs off. Of a blast that goes four hundred. And fifty feet or or more than maybe care about how. Long guys are hitting it but until then he says he's going, to sit back and not watch as much baseball. As for the prospects of ever getting into the hall of fame he's sounds like. He's pretty much given up. On that like most of the other fans, have he understands that athletes to get. Bigger and stronger over time it doesn't matter if it's Michael swelled Phelps. In a swimming pool or you would think that he would understand that. But baseball for years and years is insist that there's, nothing different with the baseball they're not doing anything different.
