We're grateful for you our listeners you allow us to do it. We love let us know how we're doing reach out on facebook and Instagram Damn at podcast and twitter at podcast network this is our second episode on Pete Rose Major League Baseball's all time leader in hits as well as one of only three living people currently on the MLB's ineligible list last week we traced Pete's incredible career career as he went from unheralded prospect to legendary superstar we also examined his obsession with gambling and how this lifestyle became more problematic Blah matic as his success group this week we'll continue to follow peace quest to pass ty COBB's all time record of four thousand one hundred within ninety one hits but as his gambling habits catch the eye of the most powerful men in baseball pizza place amongst the greats becomes uh-huh jeopardized ninety four hits. That's all forty four year old Pete rose needed to pass ty hi cobs all time hits record and is the nineteen eighty five season approached. The newly minted Cincinnati Reds player manager was all but guaranteed to shatter a record once considered unbreakable that is if his gambling problems didn't catch up with him first Pete's returned to Cincinnati also meant a return to his old gambling circles. Although he had kept up his illegal sports betting after leaving leaving the reds in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine the bookies in Cincy knew him he was Pete Freak and rose an icon a legend what's more he was one of them. Pete may have been a celebrity but he didn't act like some stuck up millionaire take away the baseball ball uniform and he was just another guy from Anderson ferry if he wanted to make a bet all he had to do was ask and Pete Pete certainly wanted to bet in the fall of nineteen eighty four he found out from a friend that the real action was taking place out of a local Gold's Gold's gym but Pete was too recognizable to stroll through the doors and start placing bets himself as we discussed last week betting on any sports sports other than horse racing was illegal. If it was too obvious that Pete was breaking the law he could risk getting arrested however that didn't didn't keep him from gambling he just had intermediaries place wagers forum with a bookie named Ron Peters by December he was using using Peter's to place two thousand dollar bets on up to ten football games every weekend and as the bookie would later confess pete eventually started betting on baseball to his bold play on the field to his extramarital affairs pete had had always been reckless but betting on baseball was taking it to another level betting on baseball had been a stain on the MLB MLB legacy since the so called black socks nineteen nineteen scandal in which members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of purposely throwing throwing the world series the black SOx scandal violated one of the most sacred tenants of the sport that the most deserving team would emerge emerged victorious to restore the public's faith in the League rule twenty one section D was created in nineteen twenty seven according to this stipulation if any employees of a major league baseball team was caught betting on baseball games they would be placed on the permanent imminent in eligible list that meant they would be barred from participating in any official. MLB events for the rest of their life. If repeat got caught betting on baseball he wouldn't be able to continue his quest to break ty Cobb's record. You'd be forced to step down from his position and as the reds manager he wouldn't even be able to enter a stadium unless he bought a ticket like everyone else but for Pete to be found in in violation of rule twenty one he would have to get caught betting on baseball and there were few factors making such a thing extremely unlikely first the very nature of underground bedding made it hard to trace any wagers back to pete in addition to relying on cash Asha exchanges bookies also made sure to refer to people using codenames for instance Pete's Moniker was the number fourteen gene. It wasn't particularly subtle it word on his back and every time he took to the field but it's still kept his name from being uttered allowed second unless a police officer went undercover exposed a bookmaker and convinced them to out their clients. There was no real way to catch Pete Red handed ended and even then with so little in the way of physical evidence it would be hard to actually prove Pete had made the bets especially Louis if he used someone as an intermediary to place bets for him but all these roadblocks were useless. If Pete didn't keep his mouth shut talk about what he was doing all it would take to bring him down was pete trusting his secret with the wrong person as it turned out that person was his own mother Laverne apparently Pete Disgust discussed his gambling with laverne however he neglected to mention that she should keep it a secret unbeknownst to Laverne she was sitting on a powder keg that could destroy her son's career and when a Cincinnati Inquirer journalist named John Iraqi came calling she inadvertently Lee let it blow up ahead of the nineteen eighty five season Iraqi visited Laverne to do some background research for his upcoming book chronicling Glinka Pete's attempt to break ty COBB's hit record as they chatted Laverne. Let slip that Pete had lost a lot of money when he bet on the San the ACL padres to win in the eighty four world series against the Detroit Tigers although a rarity had just moved to the sports division from Metro he was pretty sure that it was against the MLB's rules for Pete to bet on baseball. If he decided to dig any deeper he could probably find out not enough to get P placed on the ineligible list but Iraqi stayed quiet betting on baseball was considered a high crime against the sport court at the same time. Pete was only ninety four hits away from passing COBB. If Iraqi exposed the hometown hero when he he was so close to breaking the record the journalists would probably get run out of town for the moment pete secret was safe as the nineteen eighty five season dawned all anybody in Cincinnati could talk about was when Pete would break the record. It didn't matter that the man known as Charlie Hustle was old and slow the reds faithful knew he deliver come hell or high water. He always delivered even at forty four years old Pete certainly seemed up to the task even though his body couldn't take the grind of playing almost every day he got into the lineup enough to consistently rack up heads throughout the spring and summer by the time the calendar hits September he was within striking range of COBB's record by September eighth. Pete was at four thousand one hundred hundred eighty nine hits only two hits away from COBB. It was the last of a six game road trip and much to the delight of Reds Fans Hands Back in Cincinnati. The Chicago cubs were planning on playing a left handed pitcher one of Pete's rules when he returned to the reds was that he would never never play against lefties even as a switch hitter they gave him too much trouble. Despite the fact that the record was in his sights he planned to honor honor that rule he wouldn't bat again until the reds came home. It was all but assured that Pete rose would become the new hit king in front of the Cincinnati Cincinnati faithful however fate had other plans the morning of the Game Pete found out that the pitcher the cubs were planning on playing got injured instead the right handed pitcher Reggie Patterson would be taking the mound when Pete heard the news he practically we started salivating. He had scored a single off Patterson only two days earlier although he had hoped to break Cobb's record while at home he couldn't risk not not playing at his age every game counted so he put himself into the lineup in his first. I Bat Pete hammered another single off of Patterson he was one.

"Doing very well. The question is, how are you doing? We'll be getting since you've been off last three shows beginning, a lot of calls about how you're feeling. So here's your opportunity to update. So I'm coming along and I appreciate that. And I will tell you a lot of people reached out to me, people listen to the show, people who we know a lot of people in social media, actually got well wishes from Brandon Brooks, which was nice and Bennie. Logan reached out and wish me. Well. Yeah. We do that show together. And it is very nice. So I had partial knee replacement, whatever it was ten eleven days ago. And thanks to the great work of doctors booth and Bartolozzi. It was a success. You see my leg here with the fifty four Staples in it, which come out this week. You know, a lot of rehab. That's, that's what you do, when you have this. But it's it's common. I will say a couple of things. I'm i'm. My voice is a little weak just because I haven't used it a lot. And I think I'm a little stupider than usual, because even though I weaned myself off the medication that medication. Man. That's it's, it's powerful stuff. Yes. And I think it sticks with you for a while. So if I'm if I'm stupider than usual, rain, a little slow on the uptake your you'll cover for what you're doing. Fine so far. Well, we're minute fifty two in no tragedies yet, but I do I thank everybody for for reaching out. I certainly thank rob Ellison. John Johnson who filled in more than capably over the last couple of shows, and hopefully, this is all good. So Ray because I haven't seen you for a while. I haven't got to talk to you, and there's so many things to talk about how we how about we go back to our tried and true. Oh and. Yeah. Oh. Clamoring for that. I'm sure they have well, not really, but let's try it anyway. Here you go right question. Number one. How are the Phillies winning? And here's what here's why we'll tell you. Here's why will ask you this. They've been they've been playing very well. Or they've been winning a lot of games ten games above five hundred there in first place in division, two and a half ahead of the Braves by the way, ten head of the national. Exactly, it's kind of nice nationals are close to being buried on Memorial Day. Sure are. And they are doing it with a defense that isn't really very good. They're doing it. They're middle of the road, offensive production, their eighth and Opie. S twelve and home runs in the league at a fifteen teams they have no speed. They've stolen fourteen bases all year. There are a is this. It's fifth in the National League. It's a four zero five, which isn't great. But it's okay the being out, homered, seventy one to fifty six. But they're winning games. So Ray I come to you and ask you how the Phillies win. I don't know. I was wondering the same thing myself. The only thing I can say is they. They seem to be making big plays in key moments. Unlike well, last year's team was guilty of this, but they weren't nearly as good. I don't know what their mental black men left on base stat is. But it doesn't seem like if that much like there when they get guys on base, they get them around now which certainly wasn't the case last year. Right. So when it gets scoring opportunities, they, capitalize you make the point that they haven't played stellar defense. They're defensive stats are average. But they've made big defensive placement of head to. I mean the throw the Harper throat to real Muto gun on the guy down at the plate in really key spot is a big, big play, by the way, one of the great surprises of the year is that Harper's offense is disappointing but his defense has been. Glove gun way better than really who do. So that common. But he has been. You know, I think they have they have made, it's, it's a funny thing about not just baseball, but all sports a lot depends on what you do. In key situations. You have an opportunity to take advantage of it. You can pile up a lot of stats but not necessarily do it in the clutch still lose. Or you can be out stat it, but in a big moment you come up with a big offensive defensive play that seems to be what it is. They're there when they have an opportunity to win they win. And that's and that seems to be where it is right now, the numbers, you're right. The numbers are not overwhelming other than the fact that ten games over five hundred Memorial Day. That's pretty good. Well, we'll examine that deeper. And I, I asked the guy who does some step stuff to take a look at it and see if he can give us a good reason or two why they are winning. And we love to hear from the people on that question. Number two, raid, didn't jer. Name a retired Philadelphia athlete who deserves to be in his sports hall of fame. And I bring this up, of course because Donovan McNabb proclaimed this week, rather loudly that he deserves to be in the pro football hall of fame. Yes. Haired himself to a couple other players one who's in and one who I don't, I don't know that he is ever going to get in. Which I thought was just a thoroughly bad. Look for Donovan, not the first time he's done that knows. He's done a couple times now. Yeah. Man. He's just my theory on him, and we'll get back to the other question, because I'm sure we'll cover him over time. I think that because he lost those TV gigs. He had he is clamoring to make himself relevant and newsworthy. And so never misses the opportunity to, to offer a hot take mostly on himself. More recently on Wentz? And I think the Donovan is trying so, so hard to get himself back into the business that he's ends up looking like a fool. That's my take on him. But that wasn't the question I asked you. Okay. I can't think of any. You're talking about the sports hall, not team hall of fame. No. Not the team hoping. Okay. You're talking about the down is in the eagles hall of fame. And I mean that's a no-brainer SRI is I can't think of a flyer. I would put in that category. Now, I recognized in ready to me, wreck he was always the answer to that question. Then he got in. Yeah. Yeah. I can't think of sixer cheeks, and he got in mogayon. The phillies. I guess the one that comes, I guess, the one that comes the closest Jimmy Rollins, you say Rawlins more than not Louis. Yeah. Okay. I think I think as numbers are really good. When you look at okay? But I would I would go, I would go first football I can think of at least three Philadelphia Eagles that I think should be in. I think you and I probably discussed this before. Because there, there's exactly three names that come to my mind on this let you say, but just to see if we're on the same page two on defense and on offense. Yeah. Okay. I think we are. I think Harold Carmichael, absolutely would be. I don't defense. Eric, Allan should be. I'm amazed that he's not I've a Macy's, what's more amazing is he's never been a final when I go back and look at it, and he played sixteen years, and most of them as, as a terrific player was part of some great defenses here went to New Orleans and Oakland it was a really good player. Yeah. There was never a was never a guy that played a longtime in headed terrible drop off at the end. I mean he was playing well. And starting right to the last game of his career. Yeah. I don't understand how he's not a name that comes up all the time a separate, you and I discuss it. I don't know that either, but I think he belongs and. I would tell you, I, I would I would say, Seth Joyner, the guy that I work with on Comcast sports net pre imposed I mean, I think Seth does I mean if this isn't always the standard, but it's a decent standard to use as you look at other guys that are in the hall of fame that were their contemporaries, and say, well, if he's in the hall of fame, how is this guy, not? And I thought the Seth had a really good case all along. But I mean couple years ago. Rickey Jackson went in. Jackson was a real good player with the saints had a better nickname on a good on a real on a good team. What was his nickname, Rickey Jackson? Yeah. I don't know that he was tombstone now that was rich Jackson. The all Denver Bronco. All right. Well, then I'm wrong. No, you didn't have a good Nick. No Rickey Jackson, Ricky, Jack not rich Jack. Okay. But yeah, you're right, tombstone Jackson was a great nickname, but it didn't happen to apply to this guy. But I mean he was a really good linebacker wants. Very good. Saints teams Jim Mora teams but. I mean I saw Joyner Rickey Jackson, both play and free. Jackson's a hall of Famer there's no doubt in my mind set Joyner should be. And I, I would I would toss in a four th guy who's a little bit more back in the day. But I think deserves it as Pete Retzlaff I think Pete reds to okay. But I definitely I can't speak to Retzlaff never saw him play. But I watched Eric Allen's entire career and thought that's a hall of Famer and, and don't get it. I know that when Harold Carmichael retired, we'll get back to this later, his numbers were elite, you know, in hindsight in this league. Maybe they're not. But for his error, they certainly were right? And Seth Joyner was just by my I a great player. So. Okay. I agree with you, and we'll get into that more. And we'll get into the Donovan thing a little bit. I'm sure you covered that, yes, you've worked with rob yesterday. Sean tonight, and, yeah, the better part of the three hours was taken, well, with a lot of talk will will will limit. But we'll do some question on three rate. Didn't jer. Who is the most annoying celebrity fan ever. I would I would probably still say Spike Lee. I would probably still go. Spike lee. He was. He was the first that I can remember he was the first real celebrity superfan. Who just always seem to inject himself into the games. I haven't seen. I guess I haven't I, I know where you're going. You know where I'm going. I'm going timely is the guy now last night. But if I if I had pick one see Nicholson, always amused me. I, I kind of I kind of thought Nicholson was fun. But he stayed in his seat for did. I mean Jack Nicholson didn't do a whole lot more than smile wear, sunglasses, and get the camera on him. Right. Where Spike Lee was up in the front, row heckling, Reggie Miller, correct. Often in a way, the back on the court for God's sake. Yes. Yes. So that's a fine one. I'm definitely going Drake. The Toronto raptor, who's got a reputation as a bandwagon fan. If at one time was rooting for Kentucky men's basketball at one time was wearing Alabama football gear he is from Toronto. It's his hometown. And last night, I'm not sure if you missed it toward the end of the game when he gave raptors head coach Nick nurse a quick shoulder rub during the game. Miss that. Yeah. Miss that now that's annoying. Yeah. They love him up there. Kind of Kevin Hart..

"Too. Bacon. I'm just as bad because when I leave here when I leave the radio factory. I am going up to Piedmont smoke house because I have already put in my order for a full rack of ribs. And I ordered wings. He he's d do wings. He goes if people order, amac and bring them in. So that's what I've got going on there. And then I will probably put on a couple of pounds myself tomorrow. It's going to be bad. It's it's it's a given given we're going to be hitting the gym on Monday, though hobby. I'm hitting the gym today. Son, got it. I don't know. What's next? I don't know how he's going to torture me worse than I already am I stopped to work it out on Saturdays. When my college track career ended you were on I threw shot put this. I was on the field team not the track team track and field. I was on the field team. That's cool though. So I threw shot put discus, but I still had to get up and run with the distance runners on Saturday mornings. Did you javelin? I wanted to start. I I didn't I never learned how to throw it. Or will? I tried to. But I wasn't very good. I was better at discus and shot the my that's what my dad, I I always wanted to do pole. Vaulting pole vaulting is cool. But you gotta have a lot of. Shoulder and arm strength to what my school did not offer it so I never got to do it. And what's funny is the only sport I do watch on the regulars ninja warrior. Yeah. I think those people are just there is close to Batman as you can get very true. And do you know, what athlete makes the absolute best ninja warriors pole vaulters? Yeah. There's something about them as it is totally. You know, what we're gonna have plenty of food. If you wanna come hang up. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Sounds good to me. I mean were there. So anyway, people have asked me because every year I've done it. Here's what I do. If you wanna make chicken wings at home. All right, which I read an article yesterday, we're going to consume over a billion with a B chicken wings. During the Super Bowl. And I don't know why people order them. It's the easiest thing in the world to make it home. Now, I will admit I have a deep fat fryer. I don't use it very often. It sits on a shelf. Three hundred and sixty four days a year or something like that? I almost never use my defer you can use an oven. It's just as good friars probably a little bit crispier. But. What I would encourage you to do is make sure one have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen. Know how to use it because most people don't. And if you don't just take your fire extinguisher, go down to your fire department. They will show you how to do it tomorrow. I'm probably just going to do it in a Skillet. I'm gonna use a good oil that can get really really hot. Check your smoke points. You want something with a smoke point about four hundred degrees. I'm not heating mine over three fifty. I'm going to seize on my wings tonight. And they are going to sit in my my fridge overnight. And I'm using Tony's I share a charter Cajun seasoning. Okay. That's it. Tomorrow get the oven. I mean, get the the oil nice and hot. Fram until crispy. And this is the it's so simple. It's the dumbest thing in the world. But it's Uber. Uber. Simple. You take your hot sauce which most people use red hot? Pete's red hot or I can't remember the name of the red hot sauce. And Franks Franks. Thank you Franks red hot sauce. But what people don't realize is your pour a bottle of that into a your your bowl. And then an entire stick of melted butter. That's what they do. That's what they do at the restaurant that makes them so good. It's butter not hard. So by your wings tonight season, you'll be good for tomorrow. And yeah, we're gonna have pizza and ribs, and I'm going to gain like five pounds. It's going to be absolutely awful. And yes, I'm gonna cheer for the Rams because one simple reason I cheer for the underdog. I'm an underdog. I've always felt like an underdog. And that's who I'm going to go for will the patriots win. It'll be a fun game. Who knows but names, Richard McCann this home show? Newsradio w RV..

"Say, Christmas episodes like honeymooner Christmas. Yeah. Ozzie and Harriet, but they need a whole show of Ozzy putting up his Chris, it's a classic Ricky sings a song, and then you know, merry Christmas day, I know prone. Life was so much simpler back then. Yeah. And it was happier. Because people were saying merry Christmas. Exactly. Exactly. Hey daddy to before. Did you catch Paul and Ringo together? Sunday, rain surprise, Paul on stage, man. No. Is it on YouTube? Yeah. Google they came out for the encore him and Ronnie would they came out to play get back with Paul right? It and it was Ringo's birthday. And Paul came out of Ringo came out for Paul bringing a Paul's on tour. Oh, bring a shoot up Ringo sit after he said, I was throwing my show. Yeah. You can great. It's great Ringo seventy eight now employs six. Yeah. Yeah. Looks great. College age, but reindeer looks great polls. Got that that strawberry blonde thing going on? It's gotta go. I know that. The. What I I wanna thank you for that book. That was great. I hope I hope you're enjoying the book. I just started a book. George more. Yeah. Want to be in the room? There's the book that put you in the book as the book that put you in the room. It's great stuff. You know, what I agree about false. You know, they even have a stop you a false ready. Steve. I mean, he's an icon. You want to put yourself through the revision of golden someplace else, you could stay here and be the legend. Exactly you he goes to Jacksonville Jacksonville. I mean, if he stays here eagles gonna work it out financially foles is okay. Crater soothing relief pitcher, why not why not five more years. Stay here fill in. When once gets her whatever he's already alleging much better team. You do. I'm with you. I totally agree. I would do that again. You know, you just stay here. And that's right beaver legend be the guy look at my statue. And you know, what is even though he doesn't do it. He won't do anything. It will always be the hero. Exactly. The one thing I noticed belt falls playing hours. He throws the ball downfield a lot more than Lynch. Does. He sit up there. Jeffrey. You know, the the grab it tries to stretch to field a little bit teams. Wenches got his habit of checking down to earth. One hundred Kathy this year. But I don't think you know. Yes. At times receivers don't get separated. But you know, you at least started tries sometimes to go over the top. Let's see what happens when the brace comes off a wins. Yeah. Later Phillies, real quick. Yeah. Well, you know, what I'm happy with what the Phillies have done so far with the score. I have to be honest, Steve is don't get the child or Harper. We'll be disappointed especially after mail to come. Machado. The Yankees want him as badly as the Phillies do and I don't think he would take less money to go in the pool of superstars we could be here and be the guy. Well, you know, he'd already apparently I've read Salisbury. He's telling French in Miami already said if money's equal to the Yankees. It's his dream Yankee spot to reporters deactivate. Only willing to give him seventy years to ten years. So let's see if he takes on he. Let's see if he goes whereas parties to play for the Yankees. But I agree. What scares me? Steve now is have dodger trade tonight. Well, they did that to give Bryce Harper. Exactly. They're clearing away to get Harper. Yeah. Clear salary cap with a camp and outfield for our parade from what they're saying. He's not crazy about coming to Phillies. I mean, apparently the Phillies Dunedin puts him out in Las Vegas. So they met with Boris. But they didn't meet with Harper. And so about the place that Ellie gets though, right? They get they get Bryce Harper. Right. Then you look at the LeBron means like everybody's going to LA now. Magic Johnson, Johnny. Yeah. All that glitz. Glamour, but you know. I was a little disappointed cheated and get Andrew or I think he would cardinals. Yeah. He went to the cardinals. And with the Freeman. Good hitters. Ian Miller would have been cool. But you know, what they can get that Britain. Great. I love for them to get this catcher for Miami. You know, I'll Sarah straight now too much. He's lacking taking pole trade for multi-annual. Miami w great by. I am happy with what the Phillies you're doing. But again. Land Machado Harper. I think most will be I mean last summer Steve tilles place for a lot of summer last year. People still want Dutton. I mean other than Nola, and and Hoskins, you know, too, much cut. I fans they need to have a star somebody who's gonna put them over the top. Because the other team is going to bring people to the park. I mean you need. Well, you want Machado Machado is going to bring people to the park. And that's the biggest the biggest problem that all baseball has become who you come in to see play. Look at the Phillies are doing all that winning and nobody was showing up. Yeah. Baseball, steve. All this stuff. He got to give fans a reason to go over Harper. That's a good step a couple of years, maybe travel up. We'll see. But for now. You gotta get fans reasoning park. Right. Steve Harrison merry Christmas. Do you and your family? Oh, my friend merry Christmas. Greg. He's got here and his notes, right? Greg says Johnny Carson once remarked. Plus, you there really is only one fruitcake in the world and people keep sending it to each other joke. Johny your fruitcake is right. Fruitcake is the head cheese of dessert. It's awful. Yeah. I call it the head cheese of desserts and Carson by re gifting you re gift of you every gifted I'm thinking about regret regretting something. I have now. I have no problem, we gifting. I would have no problem if somebody re gifted something and gave it to me because there may be something that you got your all I I would love I was a kid believe it or not I was like twelve years old. And then a sleepover party. And one of my friends, and what he got for his birthday was this. This knows days used to have these little plastic football helmets. These to sell those little plastic football helmets and Gumbo machines and you put a quarter in the Gumbo machine. Turn and I remember like stealing. Well, my father's corners and going and my father put those quotas at the end of the day into a giant helmet Bank. And I would call from school and take the take my butter knife and go up the helmet bag and try to get the quotas out. So that I could go to take a bus to we hawking. So I could go that his one Gumbo machine that had the helmets and tournament tournament. That's right. And you get a lot of doubles and stuff, but my friend for his birthday got a goalpost with the entire American football league of the helmets. Right. And I was like, wow. And I wanted to bite off. I was like lit up, and then he gave it to me. And he didn't camp I loved it. So what's the problem with we gifting if it's something that, you know, you really like or something, I guess, I you know, what this don't fit me. I don't like it. Maybe you'd like it. What's the problem paid for? Absolutely. I had forward. That's it. But that was that thing with the head cheese. Let's let's see what squeeze in Bob, the builder. Bob, the builder from balder what's up Bob warning? Steve, how are you? Good. How you doing bell? You were wound up tonight buddy is the coffee. Just a across. Friday night and Saturday morning show. Because highly entertaining, you know, your stuff, thanks day. You're rocking tonight. Couple of quick things handed with the football helmets that you were you trained six by when you were a kid Coca Cola. You remember? The Coca Cola bottle caps achieve with the football. Oh, yeah. Any ski pop them off the bottle. Court and underneath they had players from all the teams. We were mad about the eagles and Pete reds slapped. Maxi born sunny. And we used to go to the great lengths at you. Did we need to get in the bus to get we lock? Right. New every coke machine. Between Manno hawk and wanted missing, Pennsylvania. And you get. To get her parents to drive. Cokes. But anyway, one quick comment about the giants the rate they're going to find a new quarterback keeps going to take him. Forever. Giants considering you know, the fact that the only quarterbacks to them is not an alien concept. So if you remember Charlie Connerly. Well, you know, what the difference with with that era? Was they brought in Waie tiddle. And that was my next. Right. Right. How old was when he retired like sixty to remember we looked like he was ninety three. He died last year at ninety. Yeah. Yeah. He he knew it was time to quit. He said when Gary would the backup quarterback? Cornell? He knew Tito said he knew it was time to retire. When Gary would asked him if he could Dave's daughter. I gotta get out. Now. But you know, what I think the thing with the giants is this they seriously believe the Eli manning is still got it. And it's going to be the quarterback. No. He's going to be he's going to be at least forty eight. You know, what that thing that SIMS where he could be there beyond. I think what happens is if the giants did dig your quarterback in this draft. I don't see them taking a quarterback in the next draft. But I do see maybe when it comes out the year after then they go and find somebody in packages together, we're just whatever and try to get that guy because. Is going to be like a lot of people before they get the next guy. Look what happened. Last rents. That's for sure. But you know, one thing I your, you know, your football history your NFL history. And when you look at the good backup quarterbacks over the last forty fifty years in the NFL you had all moral behind United behind, Bob. Zeke Bratkowski be time barred start even more bra on this. We came to Philly was fields back. So microwave subarea behind John brody's? Exactly. My question to you is where would you place Nick foles as a backup quarterback to Conrad? Wins compare history. Yeah. That's a good question. I gotta say, well, I mean if the goal backup quarterback, I gotta say the best because I can't think of another backup quarterback that took his team to the SuperBowl. And won the MVP and one. Yeah. Now, only one it won the MVP. I mean, not only did he go. If he comes off the bench. He takes the team to the Super Bowl. And then he's the most valuable player in the Super Bowl. I mean than foles the only guy think of Israel, Morrow and moral. Let me see moral loses the jet game. And he comes back and. Is wins demar. He loses the jet game. And then United win Super Bowl five. Right. And then moral went down to Miami. And back greasy after before after he. Seventy two and greasy comes back and wins the Super Bowl, right? So. Yeah. I gotta say falls probably the best backup quarterback in history. Counterbalance to that. There was he has put up the body of work that say moral were Bratkowski or someone over the long term has because his record as a starter is somewhat spotty. His. He's a heck of a relief pitcher you look at Marl moral starts with Pittsburgh. Right. My plate everywhere. Morrow went to Pittsburgh. He went he went to the giants. In fact, what happened in nineteen sixty five moral goes to the giants in the seven and seven in one thousand nine hundred sixty six moral gets hurt on a handoff in training camp. He breaks his wrist. The giants go one twelve and one moral. They they make the deal for Fran tarkenton moral ends up going to the colts where he then takes them to the Super Bowl the following year and loses too Nemeth. And then after that will goes with Shula to Miami. I think in one thousand nine hundred seventy and then 'cause moral I forget where he ended up. I hope he does he tire in Miami. Does he go someplace else? Why don't you think you're right? But I can't I'm not placing. I'll pull them up now. But he played on. He played everywhere. He's like Johnny cash. I've been everywhere, man. That's pretty much Earl moral that was thanks now. That was no thanks now. In cash did the song snow wrote it and made it famous. Oh, I didn't know that. Okay. Funny because in the song he mentioned Rigby at my entire family is from silly goes back generation, but my dad moved out west, and he ended up dying in a old folks home in Rigby either. And I didn't know where the heck it was all I knew it was from the Hank snow. Here we go Earl Marl plays for he starts off with San Francisco. Then he goes to Pittsburgh in fifty seven fifty six San Francisco fifty seventy goes to Pittsburgh fifty eight he goes to Detroit. Stays there until about nine hundred sixty five backed up Milt klom, right? God was sixteen. Then he goes in sixty five he goes to the giants stays Daniel sixty eight he goes to Baltimore in sixty eight.

"And I'll tell you with basal cell carcinoma has been popping up a lot literally. It's a form of skin cancer. And of all the types to treat the basal cell. Really? They're saying dermatologists are saying now that it's the most frequently seen about a million Americans. Are diagnosed with the disease each year. In addition to being quite common. The basal cell carcinoma is also one of the easiest types of skin cancer as well. So where to find it? Well, of course, the basal cell can pop up anywhere on the skin, but most likely be found in the areas that you see the most sun with. So of course, it just depends, but it can be certain areas. The American Cancer Society said that while doing your monthly skin exam. Here's what to look for on the spot signs of basal cell carcinoma. So scaly skin look for a flat spot. That might be skin tone or Brown. That's also a little bit scaly in texture look at open wounds as well. So any open wound on the skin that won't heal? If it's bleeding or has some fluid coming out that could be an issue bumps as well, any smooth, shiny or waxy looking bump that is Pete red or white in color, maybe darker on people that have darker skin, but these bumps off and turn into crusty and dip down in the middle. And they may bleed and have tiny blood vessels in them. You want to be cautious of those a white patch on the skin looks like a scar. Is another one it's rare. But it's less noticeable in the other signs and then a peak spot any raised pink. Patch of skin maybe crusty or depressed in the middle could possibly be a form of basil. So carcinoma so keeping an eye on the skin and getting regular checkups with your dermatologist, you're gonna make a big difference as well. So a lot of the risk factors for the basal cell. Too much exposure to the sun, although anyone really can develop it and don't forget. With with the basal cell. You always want to look at the inside out. So whatever's going on inside the digestive system is going to make an impact on the skin. The reason is is that the skin is the largest organ that we have an understanding that it's not just what the sun does to us. But we have to look at our environment. We also have to look at what we put inside of our body every single day the foods that we use every single day in the nutrition that we put inside Rabbani all of that makes an enormous impact on the cells of our skin. If you don't have the right things going in. Then you can't make the right kind of cells. Right. Pretty simple just like for anything else. So one of the things we know about the risk factors number one exposure to the signs we've got to look at the hours, you spend the sun and that will determine a lot of your risk factor. Light scans for fair skinned you're likely to burn and freckle. So you're in an elevated risk and already the male gender men are greater risk than women of getting basal cell. And of course, the family history. If you have a close, relative that has basil cell than your risk goes up compromised, immunity to so for immune system is weakened from a chronic health condition or medications you risk go up as well. So the bottom line is on basal cell skin cancer is that knowing the risk factors and warning signs of basal cell skin cancer makes it possible for you to catch the condition that early stage, which is easier to treat and the serious complications that can develop. So of course, you want to check your skin often at least once a month and point out any warning signs or concerns to your doctor. The really the bottom line is that you've taken care of your skin shielded from the sun. Then you're going to protect yourself in a great way from the basal cell carcinoma. And I always wanted to do that use sunscreen something I did early on as a young person. And it was just almost one sunscreen wasn't that unit that prevalent had family members that had skin cancer. And I saw what happened and just some of the some of the challenges they face, and it kind of got freaked me out as a kid, really. I just you know, I didn't know anything about health, and I definitely wasn't a physician that point. But I just knew that I didn't want that. I didn't want people cutting places off my skin, and even it's not that big of a deal. But when you're younger, you see it in your slight. Well, it's kind of a big deal. So. Anyway, the focus on that take care of your skin. It's so vital. And from the inside out make sure you're always using some type of protection, I think that's usually very helpful along the way triple eight two eight three seven two seven two that's triple eight two eight three seventy two seventy two whatever you're struggling with realize if the body can get sick. It can also get well. So our choices matter every single day Nathan in Birmingham. He says how important is vitamin c to a daily diet. And what's the best way to get vitamin c is actually critical? It's it's one of those vitamins, which we get in a lot of our foods. But you find vitamin c in just about every cell in the body. And when it leaves the cells depletes from the cells, we know it because so much can.

"And weather first on talk radio six eighty WCBS UW see the Weather Channel forecast. We're keeping an eye on hurricane Florence right now about seven hundred miles the other side of Bermuda heading towards the US mainland somewhere between the Carolinas and Virginia we're told perhaps by Thursday of this week. So keep an eye on that. And what kind of impact that might have for the mid Atlantic area. Today, we're expecting showers and a high of eighty two degrees. More thundershowers tonight, low of sixty eight the current temperatures Joel right now in fell's point at sixty three degrees. And it's sixty one in Alex city coming up on the news at six o'clock. A western Maryland man, charged with attacking his wife with a baseball bat the red tide. Plaguing the Florida coastline for months now. Reach the Tampa area killing hundreds of thousands of fish along the shoreline twenty mile stretch from Clearwater to Saint Pete red tide is apparently made up of reddish colored algae would usually the ocean quantities so small it's nearly invisible. But when it blooms which it has the bloom kills fish can cause us unusually mild throat irritation in humans. Authorities are calling this red tide the worst red tide since Chuck Whitaker left a trail of debt in the state about ten years ago. That's nice. What do you mean? Let the trail trail still there. It was called the first red tide. It was that was a second trail of tears. I cried all the way from Tampa. Yes. You did a lot of people hold the tab. That's for sure. There's nothing wrong with that. You have to divide the wealth. Yes, you do. Yeah. This stuff is nasty. I understand it's actually playing out into the Florida. Gubernatorial race. Yes. Yes. That's folks are all trying to figure out what to do with the red tide. There's you know, it's a common occurrence, unfortunately, it's been going on since like they said long before there was any development in Florida, right? It's a natural occurrence, and it's just a sad when it happens. But again, so I guess there's lots of Fisher being killed or whatever the case, maybe I was in ocean city in in southern Delaware Fenwick island over the last week or so and everybody was warning about the sea lice. I didn't see any see lies. I got the ocean. Water was great was about eighty degrees. And it just was delightful and no problems whatsoever. So. Maybe they head over delivers place. Who knows maybe he put out some sea, lice straps or something guy? Let's say the least to say the least. I five forty eight twelve minutes now before the hour of six o'clock. So again, we're gonna watch this case very carefully about this. Dallas police officer who has now been charged with manslaughter in this in this particular case. But the thank, you know, the the mothers upset she says if this was a white guy that answered the door the cops wouldn't have shot him. You can't say that. I know she is distraught. She's grieving she's stressed out. She's lost her son who is doing nothing more than sitting at home, and he answered the door. And then now he's gone. Man. That's just devastating on so many different levels. But you know to lash out now make it a racial thing and make it a political. I it seems like this is where we are today. Everything a one of two things happens either it gets politicized, which this has now become because of Benjamin Crump is again, if you have a phone you have a lawyer, especially one that is a race-hustling lawyer and two you have the the racial ization of the whole incident because it happens to be a white female police officer and a black victim. I I just think that based on what this police officer has said if this was a white man answered the door. I think the same thing we'll probably would have happened because she assumed it was her apartment, and she thought whoever was answering that door was an intruder whatever the case may be she's absolutely one hundred percent in the wrong. And now she's going to have to meet due process. You're in go through the system. Very sad thought certainly welcome fourteen WCBS six eighty one eight hundred six eighty coming up next. Of course, we'll take a look at the top of the hour. There's more fallout from the New York Times op-ed anonymous people keep asking me who do I think it is. I will tell you this. The New York slimes has a history of taking very low level people in an administration and somehow bestowing them with higher ranks. Okay. It's happened before. So I'm not quite sure it's anybody. Any really senior senior official. I don't people think do you think the New York slimes made it up? The possible because let's face it member. Jason Blair member. Janet cork the Washington compost. They were nominated for Pulitzer for a fabricated story. So anything is possible. So we'll get into the president's got the says the list down to four or five names anything's that it could be I think he could just be bluffing and trying to flush the personnel. We'll say like five fifty ten before the hour. You listen to Sean and Frank Maryland's wakeup call. I have a confession. I'm one of the eighty million people in the US that suffer from vein disease. Instead of seeing a doctor years, I covered up my legs and live with the embarrassment and pain of ugly, bulging, varicose inspired veins. What a mistake, thankfully, I heard about vein clinics of America. Hi, I'm Dr Robert.

"Welcome back if you like season ticket be sure to subscribe to us on apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts subscribing is the best way to make sure you get the latest episode as soon as it's available back now with peter abraham so pete red sox are probably out on stan unless something shocking happens they're out on otani whose narrowed his list down i don't think any of this is a big shock so my question is why has it taken the red sox so long to actually do anything i i think the i think they knew they weren't getting either these guys that it was a slim chance at best so i don't know if they're moving on to plan b what they should be moving onto still is what was their plan a in the first place so what what's with the what's with the delay here yeah i i think klay is still in place and i'm sure they've nebraska yes things that he wants to do that he hasn't been able to do because in some cases at least in in certainly with our cars were scott boras this is aged boris is a guy who likes to take his time and feel at the market in not necessarily make a quick move and i and i think in terms of perhaps uh whether it's jose bray when the trade market or other players they're waiting to see if other teams want to enter those markets once they don't get stand so to some degree i think the red sox have become victims as the word but they become victims of the market and that they can't necessarily do what they want to do until these things clear up in again i think that's something that's going to change the law only get orlando for the order meetings next week but for now it's kind of in a holding pattern and it's been that case for a lotta team we haven't really seen that many moves other than become narrowing down of otani in in the narrowing dallas them.
