"The whole idea behind these conversations is to learn from people who have committed their life efforts towards mastery in what we WANNA do is we want to understand? What are they searching for? How did they organize their life? What are the mental skills they use to build and refine their abilities to adjust and pivot to the unfolding unpredictable unknown, and that's really what this is about is to learn, and then to organize it in such a way that you can apply those insights to your own life. And this conversation, it's a little different. It's with sage, Steele and Pete Carroll and myself and P Carroll's the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, and he's my business partner at compete to create. In this conversation, we decided to do something different. We flip the model a bit, and it's really fun. Reason I. AM incredibly excited to show that my first book. "Pete is is well established enough well respected enough and smart enough to know that the minute he spoke on this capper. Nick situation the climate that we're. Currently sitting in right now, it was going to become a headline. It's going to be on. Speak for yourself today in numerous other TV shows where they're going to dissect and and really break down what it is that P. Carroll may have been saying or may not have been saying so I think by him knowing that and being clear on that, there is a level of genuineness and sincerity. Sincerity and the words that he said but I agree I think the rabbit hole definitely goes a little deeper and I think there's probably other agendas or reasons for him doing it, but the one that I settled on was I just want to separate myself from any ill feelings in terms of how this man was treated based upon a change of failings that people have three years later. I would say this. How many different organizations they call capper nic even gets go in and work out for E. Girl is one of those organizations, and you know most. The timing were answering questions former players in. We're answering questions. We is the question the way we want to answer the question, not necessarily what the reporters digging for, but the way you want to shape the narrow right and and your very. Very first in that as a head coach, whereas a player based upon the narrative that you want to be out there and I think there's always more to the story. You don't when it's come to a head goes. There's a lot of decisions in a lot of things that have to think about when you're managing your football team and I think that's what Pete Carroll said. Is Hey listen man? We brought him. Him In. We're one of the teams one of few teams that brought him in. We worked out. We really liked him, but there was an a spot because we looked at him. As like a we don't want you to compete with our starting. quarterback are starting. QUARTERBACK is established. He doesn't Miss Games whatever the case may be, and ultimately will give you an opportunity to go out there and find your starting. Starting job or at least give you a chance to compete for your starting job. Thing is there is noise. There are things that people are going to have to answer and talk about I. Don't WanNa bring that into my organization, and that's eight that that is perfectly acceptable like when you're managing football team. It's like the Tim. TVOS scenario like there's a lot of teams that didn't want 'em Tibo in they. They do I. Don't think he's a quarterback, but I think. Are A lot of teams that say I WANNA. Have you know a a press conference for my backup quarterback? That's a distraction and you know as well as I do teams really worrying about the distraction during the course of the season, and that's part of the decision making process that goes into being an organization a head coach. You don't have all the ball team so I. I don't Fault Carol. I look at peak, Carol and. I. Got A ton of respect for peak. Carol but. I never had Seattle as intended target in terms of all of the strap, no, and and all of the consequences that have come from Kapernick. Being unemployed blackballed. I thought Seattle actually was one of the teams that really put forth effort until I, heard yesterday, and then I was like. Wait a minute. You have now talked yourself into the crossfire and the cover up sounds worse than the crime like we're starting to really untangle peak Carro, saying he's basically saying I love the Guy He's a starter and we. Russell Wilson so we bought him in. If you brought them in, your gotta starter. Would you bring them in for a backup? Okay, where's the offer? If you could get Colin Kaepernick to even bite at any offer. You've done something there because who doesn't want to stack the deck and turns the backups in terms of talent on the roster, but no, we rather go forward Gino Smith. What's what did he say right here? So that makes no sense in the football perspective and I went p Carol Look. I'M GONNA. Keep it one hundred. Pete Carroll's the white coach and we're asking them right now. In this moment. How he felt about Colin Kaepernick back then and right now. Like a miniature person, they have a change in tune, and that's okay. It's fine, but you have to either know how to dance with this conversation with.

"pete carroll" Discussed on First Things First

"Agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick Seattle. Seattle, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll came out yesterday and admitted he regrets not signing cats back in twenty seventeen, he went on to deny that a second meeting with a quarterback was canceled in twenty eighteen over issues over capped, potentially kneeling during the anthem. Carol dig on to say that an unnamed team did reach out to the seahawks yesterday showing interest in cabinet. Gasoline for team brings him in after all of this net. There's a lot to digest here. Would you make of everything that went on yesterday? Or listen at the end of the day. Kaepernick still black hole. The reasoning has just. And I think it's instructive and I think it's important for the audience to understand over the last three and a half years the different layers of reasoning. We've gone through instead of just admitting the obvious, which is Colin. KAEPERNICK's blackballed from the NFL in twenty seventeen. That's what I would call the of plausible deniability. It's started with in the summer of two thousand seventeen O, his definitely GonNa get signed. We just have to wait for an injury that was. Was the general consensus among folks that didn't want to admit what was clearly going on that reasoning then shifted to well okay, he can be a backup somewhere, but there's only a few teams were that would be a system fit? You want your backup to have the same style as your starter and we always knew. At least some of us knew that was nonsense. It was proven out to be nonsense. The next season win Lamar Jackson took over. Over for Joe FLACCO for a team that was dead in the water, totally different stylistically and let them to the playoffs, and that reasoning then went onto all right well, they the problem is. Would he have enough time if you brought him in even if there wasn't injury, wouldn't you be better with your backup? Because he hasn't been in the offense, he hasn't been in the system and that was shown to be laughable on its face. When Jacoby. Jacoby perset started a football game for the Colts fifteen days after they traded for him. So that's what twenty seventeen was about two thousand eighteen. The plausible deniability gave way to just outright lies. It started with well. You know what I only his teammates like him think he was a bit of a cancer ignoring the fact that he won. The most prestigious award voted on by the forty niners teammates Lynch Mont Award then it was you know what? He's actually terrible. You know what he's a bad football player, ignoring the fact that he's top six in the history of the NFL and interception percentage touchdown interception ratio folks even recreated history saying he got benched for Blaine Gabbert, which never actually happened, and then the outright lie of He wants twenty five million dollars that was made out made up out of whole cloth, as an excuse for gap, not to be in the League and then twenty nineteen. Nineteen, the lies gave way to the undefinable. Does he actually want to play? Even though he'd made clear at every step, he does well, you know. We know it's unfair and we know it's a blackballing, but the NFL's a business and fans hate him totally ignoring the whatever percentage of fans it is that he was one of their favorite or most popular players, and then in two thousand, nine hundred and became well. Can you even still plays? Plays in shape, and then we saw the workout this past November where he's clearly in shape, and he clearly can still play, so the only thing left was as a distraction. It's such a hot button topics such a polarizing issue, and now that the majority of Americans understand he was right now that the NFL has admitted without saying his name, he was right. We've given way I. List listed nine excuses there to the tenth and final one. One which is damn. It's a shame that blackballing that happened just took too long for us to realize, and now it's been too long. Which of course is also nonsense? Chad Henny, the backup quarterback for Mike. Kansas City chiefs since twenty sixteen, when capitalism starter has thrown five passes in the same time, bring caps grown three hundred and thirty Alden Smith has been out of football a year longer than that. He's on the Dallas cowboys right now. Folks for the better part of four years, wilds have done their best to deny what is patently obvious Colin Kaepernick his career taken away from him because he made a stance, he made a stand. And now the country is realizing he happened to be right about that stand and he's still not going to be able to play football again. I'm a little bit more optimistic than you nick. I think that we've seen a sea-change year from goodell from the League and from Pete Pete Carroll, said, and I know Pete Carroll has always. Talk is an optimistic guy, but I don't think there was a reason for him to volunteer. The fact that teams are caller. A singular team called him to ask about him. That makes me think that we're headed in the right direction that cap. Cap is going to get a shot in that caps perseverance that he shown throughout these last three and a half years. He's been on. Instagram with his day. Count of how long he's been out in constantly showing that he is ready, he was ready in the trial. I. I have more maybe I hope it's not naive. Optimism but I'm optimistic that he will be on an NFL field or with an NFL team this year, Bouchard. Look I do feel like for the NFL to make good on its apology Roger. Goodell issued capper. Nick needs to be on a team. He needs to at least have the opportunity to play. If otherwise you just speaking words that really don't have any meaning and a lot of people are doing that right now and I think Pete Carroll was talking out of both sides of his mouth. Okay, he's. We regret not signing back in twenty seventeen. We should have done it well as you regret it do it now. Nothing has changed Russell Wilson is still embedded as your starter, so there won't be a controversy. It's not like if Russell has a bad gay people going to say put Kapernick in, so you don't have to worry about that. In fact, you know what one thing has changed the one excuse their Pete, Carroll gave for not signing cap. He's a starter. He really is. He's good enough to start. He's too good to be a backup. We can't sign him for that reason now. He is a backup now. He become a starter in the future, but no one. One in their right mind would say after three years off. He's ready to step into the NFL right now and start so that excuse gone Canada Knicks point so now. What's the excuse Gino Smith? You signed him to a one year one point two million dollar deal..

"You gotta push shift yeah yeah yeah. The point is to be uncomfortable yeah so anyway okay so i was so pete is like he is the person that gives that to other humans all day long right. It's cool. I really wish he had seen last chance you a love last this last see the current season is phenomenal in that coach who i like. I think he's got this. Is these amazing qualities. These white from south central negro around all black folks. We really knows how to communicate with kids that have come from a really rough area anybody the elza la and he uses a lot of these techniques that just you don't think forget everything else it come to see. It becomes that torture debate. You know yeah which which you know i feel differently about torture if it worked but there's so much evidence that it actually doesn't work yes that you don't get the truth from it discuss series of lies. They think you want to hear similarly. I don't i don't think that that screaming at everyone and shit yields resort certainly they wanted from me. I know i it's just different personality types like i bet some people do really thrive off of that. It's kind of like a sick almost like masochistic asa kiss stick thing. I feel like if they had like a dad that like yelled at him and pushed him but then gave him as his approval. There's some that feels familiar in nice but if if you didn't for me it's so foreign to have a fucking man. Just scream at you now. It's enough for me. I mean i guess yeah. I guess there is something sort of exciting writing about someone's approval. That's hard to have <hes> and then so that's sort of what they're displaying like guy hate you and then eventually elite. They turn feels really good well. That's the did you watch the <hes> the lake placid olympics documentary about the hockey team there and then it was made into the movie miracle. Oh i didn't see either and famously like at that time. Still we only college athletes playing the olympics. There was no professionals rational now now tall professional but then it was still a collective of college athletes that beat russia which was impossible and those were professional players mhm in that coach was kind of celebrated for his whole plan was always to unite them against him so he was willing to be the asshole that everyone hated to unite them so i guess there's that version where it seems like it worked. Digging need poly technical approach where it's like. You're adjusting for everyone's personality finale. Which sounds like what pete does maybe. He gives the guys who need that. Yeah tough love shit that yeah and supports others thrive off that yeah i do. The best thing you can do is engenders some sort of feeling that the team mm-hmm is one right and what however you do that. That's the real keys is rule number. One always protect the ti- yeah yeah that's right. That's an important factor because it doesn't really matter what the coach is pushing you to do. You'll push yourself. If you feel like these. Other people need me to do that. Depend on you yeah. I miss it yeah. You should find your way back into some kind of competitive something. I'm gonna. We're gonna have to think on that this week. With what options are there for you crosswords. I'm not going to be good enough at at though no. I need to be good at it too late in the game to come competitive across words i i. I want to start learning piano <hes>. I don't think i should get competitive. 'cause i'm just about to start learning a little early needed at the same time oh and then we'll get competitive which the other that sounds like. It's a good plan for okay so some tax. There are actually aren't that many facts oh well. This just reminded me because he said that he worked his football coaches. He'd coach those pop warner kids and stuff and i ended that we were forced forced to do that in in high school we had to coach the reckless kids saw in cheering alvarez signed a grade. There was a horrible incident that happened injury. You know the sexually assault now but i mean pretty much worse this girl it's so owned one so really been extorted kid. I punch shoot. I knocked the wind out. You know these are like a eight year. Olds probably let it out. She feels like <hes> handmaid's tale. When you're in the center chair yes guilt sin sin sin so this girl was eight eight ish and me me and my friend my other cheerleader friend were their coach and she was in rec league and i think her mom drove the school bus and and and she had a huge you know huge huge huge mole okay on her leg. Maybe i don't remember where it was but it was exposed okay and it was huge distraction a lot of hair yup well. Even at a it was a real site. Uh-huh there was an eyesore yes and she was obviously not cool and these were young cheerleader so ever a lot. The people were cool popular yeah. You're i have a mix. I think of supporting you and tell me and then and then just thanks feeling really sad already. Just the mom's a school bus driver. That's that's a tough road a ho. I wonder if i made that up. I if i did ed i really hope i did. I don't think i did i think her mom was the bus driver and she had not cute mole well and you know she just didn't fit in and stunt and see if the kind of i think people had to touch her mole. No one wanted to anyway me and my friend were talking about it okay in a not favorable favorable way and she her we didn't know okay came up like our coach is told us oh boy hey. There's this situation. We weren't like it was kind of. It was extra back because we weren't getting in trouble. Just like be more private about this happened and what happened and we were like did you do i think at first we were like no no that wasn't us or we were like no we were saying it's viewed of and use it as a knob the it's a great opportunity to really get a hold on her when she's flying what you wanna do this'll be muscle memory. You feel that knob to grab obama and you're never going to be in use it as an anyway and then we had. We talked with her mom the bus driver you had to talk to mav. Oh it was it it was. I only have ever told anyone that was awful. It really was yeah. I think i can't imagine any of us. Don't have those memories memories because i was inclined to go like oh. I was big and i was fighting a lot so maybe it's just me that i hurt. Someone and i feel terrible about it but i think everyone has gotten ensnared in and some shadiness to someone else. It's almost impossible to make it to your life without shit happen again. That's how you learn. You probably felt terrible. Uh-huh yes also i felt so many things i felt terrible also felt so scared. I was like all my god. I did something really bad. I feel guilty and also i feel like oh. My life is ruined. I'm probably going to get kicked off this cheerleading squad. Your whole life was ending and the mom was nice to own are both prone to feel like our whole life is indeed. I wonder again if that's like broadly universal or and <hes> people think like these little indiscretions are going to take the whole thing down yeah. That's a really good question. I don't think everyone one does feel that it presumes that like you have something you want to keep to begin with which may be unique unique now yeah <hes> you guys apologize to the girl. I think maybe i mean. We put us to the mom i can't. I don't know i think we did. I'm sure we had to nope. This is one of those you know real murky kind of topics which are you don't want to perpetuate something in yet it short so you know i always bring up. The fighting thing like i would if your kid is getting picked on. Would you say punch them. It's clearly wrong but what's wrong. Her army wants to go. I i oh i wish she could have just got the mole removed because you're asking a lot of eight-year-olds to not care about a mole. I now it's yes. We ideal deal if eight-year-olds didn't care but then you also have to be realistic about the world we live in so excited you get this more removed. You know i certainly would but i don't if that's the evolve moving in the right direction like oh. That's just their crossed bear and it'll build character. I don't know it's complicated. I just know my my heart would snap in half. Lincoln came home and everyone's talking about a mole on her like i mean i it would hurt me so much more even leaking with these stitches. You know you've seen me with injuries. I could give a fuck. I don't care if i got a slang or i'm getting operated. I don't care at all stitches her stitches in her finger. When she touches up my stomach turns. I'm like oh. I'm so nervous about her hurting herself thinking about someone <hes>. I feel really bad about that girl new. It's okay. That's it's all dead now or something. No she's probably the governor of georgia okay again. It could be like dyslexia probably like to find her. She if she found her confidence fuck this world this superpower i oh she just got it remove. It wasn't really a mole. I mean it was but it was like more humor. It was kind of like a tumor that had a pigment hype hyperplasia with some malignant tumor s qualities. Oh oh man you know what's funny. Is you gotta just kind of like for you. I feel guilty. You feel mad at yourself that you're so shallow right. That's how i feel when i'm like judgmental of someone's got like <hes> tons of flakes all of their eyebrows or so mag become aware of it and then a mad at myself right but i do imagine there has to be some evolutionary thing where it's like. We're we we have a biological response to be afraid of someone. That seems to be carrying a disease or infectious. I really think that's what it stems from. That's why throw up smells so much much closer than anything else because there's poison in the throat and that's why they threw up so if you want to be repelled by so you know to me or or even like lameness right. I don't even know if that's the word you can use anymore but like if kids born with a bomb leg or arm. I think evolutionary you're like oh. That's a liability all of our safety interesting yeah any to beat yourself up. You have those feelings that you have to overcome them and you need to shame yourself of me so mad and disappointed with yourself that you just that your knee jerk reaction of these things. I think it's kind of hard wired in us. Yeah it's like it's but you can be judgmental. Judge mental of your action after the thought for sure yeah you know what really makes me sad about the story is like i think we were just talking about it because it was was like fun to talk about somebody else in the same way the same thing everyone does all the time or they wanna talk uh other people to make themselves feel better and it was like we were on the cool team right. We didn't have a huge mole yes and yeah. I probably felt like oh thank god. I don't have that because of all these other things. I don't like your whole skin color yeah well. This is the thing that's recommended in the broken ladder which down comparing means basically what you're doing all but that's i don't. I wouldn't recommend that. I don't think it's good to do that. It also is like so stupid like just interesting no well well. Hold on down compare not in a mean way but it is like. I'm always <music> saint on here that i'm a six or i don't like how i look and then so when i think about oh yeah i could like how i looked less and i should be grateful and so it could lead me to having gratitude wall to mentally yeah. That's because it's a shame our brains work that way. You need to find something some of the worst plight than ears to enjoy your station okay so how many people have e- cots said like five people have them fifteen people have them oh fifteen yes but more than forty performers are just one away including richard rogers rita peter marino audrey hepburn well. These are some of the people anyhow so there might be a big influx of guts. Yeah sin could get even less exclusive fifteen. That's higher than i would have thought hafer very much but i just how do people win a grammy. You're an actor. Sometimes you can win them and kind of dicey way. Oh yeah like zach braff. One one i think for yes for the the soundtrack of of garden state garden state soundtrack a great soundtrack which is when i think of grammy winners i think people who write amazing music not people who cure a yeah sometimes you can win them for like audio or like audio. 'cause i'm just about to start learning a little early on at the same time oh and then we'll get competitive which the other that sounds like. You know the sexually assault but i mean pretty much worse this girl it's so owned one so really been extorted kid. I punch shoot. I knocked the wind out bad yeah so these are like eight year. That's that's a tough row to hoe. I wonder if i made that up. I if i did ed i really hope i did. I don't think i did i think her mom was the bus driver and she had not cute. Mole will and you know she. Just didn't fit in and stunt and see if the kind of i think people had to touch her mole. Ooh it was it it was. I was like oh my god. We ideal deal. If eight-year-olds didn't care but then you also have to be realistic about the world we live in so it's sad you get this more removed. That's why throw up smells so much much closer than anything else because there's poison in the throat and that's why they threw up so if you want to be repelled by so you know to me or or even like lameness right don't even know if that's the word you can use anymore but like if kids born with a bomb leg or arm. It also is like so stupid like just interesting no well. Well hold on down compare in a mean way but it is like. She's won't be able to get it but mel brooks share kate winslet let viola davis common helen mirren lin manuel miranda dick van dyke julie andrews lily tomlin tomlin. These are some of the people anyhow so there might be a big influx of guts. Yeah sin could get even less exclusive fifteen. That's higher than i would have thought hafer very much but i just how do people win a grammy. You're an actor. Sometimes you can win them in dicey way. Oh yeah like zach braff one one i think for yes for the the soundtrack of of garden state garden state soundtrack a great soundtrack which is when i think of grammy winners i think people who write amazing music not people who cure a yeah sometimes you can win them for like audio or like audio so we might win..

"This is kind of intimidating here. Is it a couple of things right out of the gates. You're incredibly fit. Can i say that. Can we acknowledge that you say you want. Are you on a specific. You expect let me start by. I think the most important thing for me to say in admit i know so little about football. It's it's ridiculous. The reason i was attracted to having you on is simply because i think of your many philosophies that again i learned and mostly from michael my interest in you is more like an organizational psychologist than per se the game itself which is they don't like the game this okay yeah. I don't have a ton of knowledge the giants so what i watch is hard knocks on h._b._o. Last chance you on netflix in a lot of these coaches are past their prime. Let's just say that physically physically. There are a little heavier. They don't seem to be doing drills but you are in incredible shape. That's all. I wanted to do specific way mind boy yeah i do do. I'm wife and i were influenced to go plant based awhile back years ago. Oh no kidding yeah so. We've done that in really recognize. It's made a difference you know just in feeling well and getting rid where the <hes> aches and pains and the arthritis type of feelings that you have you know from information all that i don't have those anymore. I used to have a lot. I've got all kinds of stuff that i've done to my body. That warrant aren't that response but i don't feel that stuff anymore. So are you off animal protein entirely or sometimes you splurge or no. I figured out a pattern of it you know so. I still eat eggs and okay. I don't eat meat rarely really yeah so and then are you getting enough exercise just being out on that field walking back and forth all that stuff or do you have to actually really set aside now. I know i have a little routine that i do before i go out every day and go out on the field couple times. I've do something before that's enough to keep me going with the running around that i do. I make a point of trying had to run places and just keep moving and throw the ball at the time and so i'm active. I'm going to further embarrass you monica. Would you agree your skin looks so healthy. Does it looks like you're on a plant based. Diet looks radiant and healthy. Did you know there's mostly a cosmetic. Show so oh you just you look like you're really doing well you. You were born in nineteen fifty one in the same year. My mother was and so i'm just looking at how you guys have both run your thing and it looks great. Okay now you grew up in san francisco. I was born in san francisco marin mom and dad do my dad was in the wholesale liquor business for the forty years in san francisco and have really a great gig. That's a job that demands some charisma yeah. He was a sales manager for the most part and became a v._p. Later on we had a really interesting setup they had to serve all of san francisco and in that he had sales people that had to call on all the different accounts so he had every background background you could ever imagine represented throughout the whole culture of san francisco and in christmas time. He used to take me in the office one day. You know i was just such a mixed bag. Hey good people you know. Eppie epstein people ride. It was amazing crowd that we messed with. It was a good upbringing unified only in a huge appetite for liquor exactly in such a supporter. She supports that so oh that's great as i was reading about you. There's so many themes teams that are interesting about you that interest me in particular. I mean one of them just to announce my thesis statement on you is what find example of failure.

"This season? Do you think penny can overtake Carson this year, so overnight Carson if they both stay healthy? So if they're both healthy. I don't believe so and that's not because of respond pennies talent Pete Carroll is a players coach Pete Carroll loves his guys supports as guys. And he believes in Chris, Carson. In fact, he literally just this was hours ago was on records. And Chris, Carson is in the best shape of anybody on the team. He is a Chris, Carson believer now that he's still injured me still dealing with a knee injury. Can't play football right now. But pekair loves the guy. And, and I think what you could see happen. Realistically is a true one a one b where you've got to solid fantasy. Producers this season. And you can't do that, in many offenses. No. Definitely can in Seattle. You have a hundred and fifty touches for Mike Davis out of the way you've got a lot that's a lot. You've got a fishing see coming from Rashad penny that you saw last year. Rashad penny is cut. Wait. He is down. He's getting all the first team reps right now while Chris Carson is away, and you could really have a team that's rushing, the ball five hundred times breaking down. I mean you could have two players approaching two hundred carries one probably well over now that being said now at ADP right now Carson is the value. They're both. So then it's do you take Carson at, at his value or penny at his value right now. Well, if I had to pick it right now, today, I would rather go with Rashad Penney. Carson's a four zero nine penny is seven three. That's why as well as look you've got a guy saying he's going to be ready by the beginning of the season. But you. Would you be to have both on your team that would that would not be fun because you're you're, you're not gonna want to start both players at the same time? Yeah. And you don't want to spend a seventh round pick on a handcuff..
