"Around the team felt like it was too much too soon tarot wasn't really ready for that and it actually became a problem for him Pete. Alonso. On the other hand seems absolutely equipped to deal with stardom in. New York with the expectations. With the the pressure coming from fans he tells his great story about how he was walking out on the street last year and and some fan recognize Ed paid Alonso and he gave the wave and the big smile in the hello and the Fan said stop swinging at pitches off the outside corner. That's awesome. We'll buster I know your time is precious I know you need to go back to go and Paul? O'Neil on those tree branches with your chainsaw so get back to that. I appreciate it Baba. "You make the most of the stop you need to make see full terms and conditions at fuelrewards dot com in engines that continuously use Gel power, nitro, plus premium gasoline. All right buster. So after a few years in the minors getting his defense, right Alonzo gets called up to the big leagues. Twenty. Nineteen. When did he realize winded others start to realize that he had a chance to be really really special. I think for the mets organization, they were forced into it. His sense because of the beginning of spring training two, thousand, nineteen is they say he wasn't really on the front burner for the mets, but he just had an incredible spring training. One on impede people Lonzo will come up. Trust what deep to her over the head of It's out of here. Is Oh on the first pitcher season spring training displays the power that met fans have been salivating for. His cousin Derek Morgan who pitch to them in the home run. Derby. told us this amazing story about how people as on opening day in Washington DC? He goes hitless against Max Scherzer and they're out dinner that night and impede asks him hey, how's your batting practice these days in other words how he throwing batting practice and Derek Morgan is like what? What are you talking about? Why? Why do you need to know that? Oh, I think I have a chance to be in the home run Derby. and. Then in early June, his cousin is going to a bachelor. Party and the phone rings and it's calling to tell him Yup. We just got the invite get ready. You're GonNa Pitch them you the home run Derby and Cleveland. The. Home Run Derby. Champion twenty two. That's how much confidence. In himself and you know this is someone who is envisioning himself as a little kid that he was going to play in the major leagues and he was going to be part of the home run. Derby. And then just over two months after he became home run Derby Champ at the end of September Alonzo steps to the plate with a chance to break. Aaron judge is rookie homerun record. Pita Lonzo now he's even with Aaron judge. Pitch. It's at high air right center. Field Hamilton looks back. He's a wall. It's Wrong. Three. Breed along. So stands alone. Major League Baseball's Homerun King. What was all of that like for him? It was classic beadle on. So where you know he hits the home run that breaks Aaron, Judge's record, and as he's rounding the bases, the response from the New York crowds in city fields and the way he responded to them takes his helmet off he raises adds to the airy leans back. A Sigh of relief. At a pump of Fist and celebration as he dips into the mets dugout. Goes to the DUGOUT and he's embracing the moment. He's embracing teammates, and then he goes back out on the field and he starts to week. Slight Polish I did it. That's it. It's like I can't believe it is euphoric. It felt like I was. Rhonda surfboard on Rainbow. Talked to Todd Frazier and talk to Robinson Canal and others and they're like, Yep. That's Pete. He wears every emotion on his sleep at all times and he seems to be one of those people who can appreciate the experiences that he has as he goes through them, which is a pretty rare quality in people. Let's fast forward to the present day twenty twenty now because the polar bears season has kind of been the polar opposite. So to speak of his rookie year in the early going and buster I'm not sure if the former top baseball reporter for the New York Times is aware of this but New York City can be a tough place to fall short of expectations. How do you think Peter Lonzo is going to respond to this slow start. So P reminds me a lot of Paul O'Neil who I covered with the Yankees when I was working at the New York Times and Paula Neo is the person who would break up the water cooler Heathrow his bad. He'd get incredibly frustrated jean-michel the general manager the Yankees acquired him told me you know the one thing I knew was Paul Neal was going to be much harder on himself. Then New York fans would ever be the biggest point of pressure for Paul was internally and I think Pete is very much the same way. So when Pete struggles he tends to. Build up some anxiety and expands the strike zone. In fact, he told me a story from the days of last year when he was chasing down Aaron Judge's record and he was struggling and Jacob degrom walked up to him and said, Hey, you're a little nervous and Pete Alonso responded. Well, why would you ask me that the Graham's response was well, you started swing before the pitchers releasing the ball i. think that's a little bit of what we're seeing Pete early this season with the mets off to a poor start there's a lot more focus on each game and I'm sure he's feeling that anxiety. So Pita Lonzo clearly wants to succeed as badly as anybody that we know of in baseball. But when you talk to people around the League buster and I'm talking about players and coaches and scouts and executives. Now, what did they say when they talk about Pete Lonzo when they scout him today That he is a far more advanced hitter than they thought. That he's has someone who makes adjustments from pitch to pitch. He'll take the ball is a right handed hitter right field at times. He's not simply just the swing as hard as you can slugger who's GONNA strike out two hundred and fifty times. He is surprised people with his defense. He's become very adept at digging balls Outta the dirt he's moving. Well, he definitely opened up a lot is around baseball last year because really in the fall of two thousand, eighteen I think when Brodie van wagon and took over as general manager of the mets. If some other team had called the mets and said, look, we'll give you. A good offer for PD Lonso I think the mets would have been very open minded about things because he wasn't really in their plans for two thousand and one, thousand, nine, hundred. And now here we are and the other huge star in The New York baseball market obviously is Aaron Judge and the Yankees outfielder has been to his own incredibly hot start to the season. But last year, he had some conspicuously complimentary things to say, about Pete, as pete sat on the edge of breaking this rookie homerun record is eventually going to break it I know that for sure and. No better, no individual represent you're not going to mess with the city of New York. What would it mean for baseball buster to have both pita Lonzo and Aaron Judge Be V. Stars Astride the Big Apple at the same time. We'd take us. Back to. The fifties right. When had Willie mays and Mickey Mantle? Duke Snider that sorta rivalry would be pretty cool and I think there's a chance is going to happen not only because the greatness of those teams. But as you know, the mets are in the process of being sold right now you would expect that the next owners whether it's the Kohner with not it's Alex Rodriguez's group. They're going to probably spend a lot more money than the current mets ownership is spent and I, that'll give pete a better chance to be. Surrounded by great players in the way that Aaron Judge's but it'd be great look you know the the mets probably the first big young star that they promoted that everyone remembers was Darrell Strawberry but folks back down.

"That was the moment mets first Baseman Pete Alonzo made baseball history hitting his fifty third home run of the two thousand nineteen season the most ever by rookie. While Peter Lonzo made his rookie season. His past there was anything plot. Today ESPN's Buster Olney joins us with new details about how Lonzo overcame years of bullying to make it in the big leagues. And how the man they call polar bear proved his doubters wrong. By never doubting himself. I'm Pablo Torre it's Friday August seventh. This is ESPN daily. Hey Buster thanks for joining us man I. Know there have been some truly crazy storms this week in the northeast. Thanks for having me I wasn't sure as we get ready for the taping what we're GONNA do no power. I am Buster Olney is in ESPN senior writer and the host of the baseball tonight podcast. That is if he ever gets his power restored, I spent three hours today clearing out brush and trees and chainsaw and doing all that and no one I'm done with you. I'm going to go back out for a couple more hours. So fingers crossed. Chain Song with Buster Olney is the name of an amazing podcast by the way I. Hope You don't let this week go to waste from a content perspective. But speaking of some startling crazy power surges. Brought, you hear buster to talk to you about Pete Alonzo the mets first baseman. Who won rookie of the year last season and set the all time rookie record for home runs and this season so far in the early going, there's been a bit of an outage with him at the plate struggling to get going. On the outside corner strike three call thirteen Alonzo's been struck out today. Buster the man nicknamed polar bear has been kind of ice cold but we are still just thirteen games into this season and I think most people still believe he will still turn it around. And you spent a lot of time with Alonzo this off season for east sixty profile and found out some really surprising details from his journey to the majors. What did you learn? You know what really jumped out at me when I was preparing for the interview I read something that he had done about him speaking at his old middle school. And he spoke to the students repeatedly about, Hey, don't worry about if you feel different and that's one of those things as a writer, you like how what stat about and I gotTa tell you it was like sticking a finger on the ground and having an oil gusher come out. Everyone kind of goes through they're kind of like. Stage in life like awkward stage if you will. I. Mean I was I was bigger. I was picked on for it but I mean. That kind of stuff really stuck with me and it hurt on the inside it was remarkable the depth of the stories and the pain that he felt, and he remembered every bit of the bullying that he got when he was a young kid and so it was just it was amazing. How much hurt he feels how much he sort of hangs on that and how much he he works often how much that motivates So. In talking with Pete Buster. Did he or anyone else who spoke with fury as to why this guy? Who is now? So successful atop the baseball world why he was such a target growing up. Well first off, he's just different. He just moves differently than most baseball players. He's bigger. You know he's not live like Aaron judge he's built like a coke machine. In how sticky is the way that he runs his unusual and as I went back and looked at pictures of him as a kid I mean he was he was a kid and according to his friends Michael pay when they were children growing up, he would hear all the time you know, hey, Fatso Hey, fat boy he was the biggest kid in the room and he was the funniest the kindest and Always goofy. But he was made fun of throughout his childhood for his size. And Michael told me that he really hurt for Pete and he didn't understand it because Pete was such a nice person. But in retrospect when Pete looks back at that time. He feels like the part of the thing was he didn't fight back internalize a lot of things they didn't really. Fightback. Punched or kicked or something like that before. But it didn't hurt like physically hurt like mentally people would say things to him. That were really hurtful peers when he was a little kid and he would just absorbing move on because is such a nice person and it's more of him just simply not understanding why someone would say something like that to him. So Buster pitas dealing with being bullied as a kid what role did baseball play in coping with that It was his outlet baseball was my safe place. Someone can make fun of me in the classroom or Aaron P. Ear or whatever. But no one will make fun of me in between the lines you know as he said, he felt safe on the baseball field and it was a way for him to respond. So if he would hear the taunts from opposing players about his weight, that's when I got my pay back. You're making fun of me like I'll. I'll just head home off you suck on that. That's how I think he. He used baseball easy. He was growing up. He was never going to be one as a little kid to confront anyone who was saying anything and in fact, I thought about this in some ways, Pete would have been like the perfect target for a bully because he's so earnest you can see the emotions on his face and the response and you knew that as a little kid, he wasn't going to be someone who's going to punch back despite the fact he was always the biggest kid in these class photos that he was in. So coming out of high school Pete's attracts attention, but he decides to stay home close to home and attend the University of Florida, and at this point, he is this big aspiring prospect with all of these sensitivities that you mentioned. So what happened when he got to college? I had no idea about any of the story when we sat down he, he brought this up himself. And he talked about how he met his girlfriend Haley Walsh when he was playing the Cape Cod League, and then he returned to Florida for his junior year and Haley was attending school in Michigan State Pizza in Florida it's a long distance relationship and so they talked on the phone a lot and according to Pete. He got a lot of a lot of flack from his teammates slash roommates about that and they were on them all the time and there were instances in which they're sending him porno on social media and it really bothered him and finally he got to a point where he confronted this person who had. sent him this stuff on his phone and he said this needs to stop right now and so here you have big lovable Pete Alonso six, foot, three, two, hundred, forty, five pounds, and according to Pete this is the first time that he really stood up for himself and he yanked his teammate off a scooter like this grabbed grabbed him. You don't ever do that. He said, meet me at the clubhouse and he didn't show up. That's the best part about it. That's when he felt like you know what I stood up for myself and that was so empowering now it didn't end there. You know he told us a story. About Kevin Sullivan. His coach at Florida confronting him in the Dugout my head coach, my back. Either my roommate's Kinda went behind my back and told him that I needed to break up with her, and then he used that against me the game it's like Oh. You're just focused on her. You're not focused about team. You don't care and I told him to go himself in the DUGOUT. And you don't ever say that to a college coach but I did and he said it was important because he felt like look. I didn't understand why this was an issue I cared about this person. And I cared about this relationship and this is someone who is now is fiance and he felt like he needed to take a stand and he kept on using that same word empowering when he talked about standing up for himself..

Dan <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> responded immediately. <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> Stop just freaking <Speech_Music_Male> stop and it didn't <Speech_Music_Male> end there. I'm telling <Speech_Music_Male> you right now. Marcus <Speech_Music_Male> said my mind is not changing. <Speech_Music_Male> Bro. I <Speech_Music_Male> think we're not. Dan <Speech_Music_Male> Texted back. You're <Speech_Music_Male> too smart for this <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> and I'm telling you right now. <Speech_Music_Male> It goes on <Speech_Music_Male> not I could sell this <Speech_Music_Male> year. I just posted <Speech_Male> that were sent <Speech_Male> across. Snap <Speech_Male> the screen shot of <Speech_Male> that many but it went <Speech_Male> on for a very long. <Speech_Male> That'd be like a scroll <Speech_Male> if it were to go on <Speech_Male> forever and Marcus. <Speech_Male> Here's what I have been <Speech_Male> wanting to respond <Speech_Male> to you that were sent <Speech_Male> across. Snap <Speech_Male> the screen shot of <Speech_Male> that many but it went <Speech_Male> on for a very long. <Speech_Male> That'd be like a scroll <Speech_Male> if it were to go on <Speech_Male> forever and Marcus. <Speech_Male> Here's what I have been <Speech_Male> wanting to respond <Speech_Male> to you basically <Speech_Male> for an hour and <Silence> I never got a word edgewise. <Speech_Male> You <Speech_Male> said earlier <Speech_Male> that what you <Speech_Male> liked about Lebron <Speech_Male> James leadership style <Speech_Male> is the way he lifts <Speech_Male> everyone up and <Speech_Male> your sense of it if <Speech_Male> I may paraphrase was <Speech_Male> that when Michael Jordan was doing <Speech_Male> it in the way he did it it might <Speech_Male> not have been a whole lot of fun <Speech_Male> right. Does that sort of <Speech_Male> seem like an appropriate <Speech_Male> way of looking <Speech_Male> at what you were saying. <Speech_Male> What is <Speech_Male> it they say in the National <Speech_Male> Football League <Speech_Male> playing <Speech_Male> for the Patriots <Speech_Male> playing <Speech_Male> for Bill Belichick <Silence> and playing with Tom <Silence> Brady <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> now right <Speech_Male> so the point I'm making <Speech_Male> is winning <Speech_Male> is not fun. <Speech_Male> So if your primary <Speech_Male> focus is <Speech_Male> winning than your <Speech_Male> primary focus is not <Speech_Male> fun. It's not <Speech_Male> who's feeling good. <Speech_Male> Today is not <Speech_Male> whose feelings might <Speech_Male> be hurt by what I'm about <Speech_Male> to do it's <Speech_Male> either do. I'm telling <Speech_Male> you to do in practice <Speech_Male> or I'm going to punch you <Speech_Male> in the face which he <Speech_Male> literally <Speech_Male> did to a <Speech_Male> teammate. In practice <Speech_Male> who now by the way is <Speech_Male> the coach of the Golden State <Speech_Male> Warriors? So Marcus <Speech_Male> what. I'm trying to tell you. Is <Speech_Male> I get what you're saying? <Speech_Male> But Michael <Speech_Male> Jordan at the end of the day was about <Speech_Male> results and <Speech_Male> no one has ever had <Speech_Male> in. The modern era <Speech_Male> has had the results that <Silence> he had <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> G. We <Speech_Male> continue to have <Speech_Male> this conversation. <Speech_Male> And we'll continue <Speech_Male> to go in circles. <Speech_Male> And you know how <Speech_Male> much I love you <Speech_Male> and Dan but <Speech_Male> there are so many <Speech_Male> arguments to be <Speech_Male> made with <Speech_Male> this whole leadership <Speech_Male> conversation. <Speech_Music_Male> So

"Stuff. He's become one of our favorites obviously not just with his play last year and rookie of the year. But now with the way he's handling this downtime and that's of course mets first baseman Peter Lonzo. Who JOINS US? He's part of the all in challenge. And so let's get right into this. What is the experience that you are offering to folks here to raise money to help feed people who need it so desperately during this time so basically the all in challenge I mean it's basically fanatics is putting on the event and it's basically everyone is going to be all the proceeds are going to be going to people who need meals served just basically anyone who is affected negatively by Kovin nineteen so the all the proceeds are going to be donated towards that? Because this this pandemic has really affected a lot of people. And I'm just trying to help out and I'm going to be donating a fishing experience with me. My Buddy Trading Rodriguez who's who's a captain And Tampa Bay and it's GonNa be you and And two buddies and we're GONNA go out there and ripped some lips and slice and fish and then after after the triple. We'll have dinner and all have some smarter. Graph stop so you can bid on that experience on fanatics website. And I'm I'm pumped up about it I I'm really pumped up about it. It's a wonderful gesture on your part and there's no doubt that will bring in a lot of money because people love fishing so much now. I would tell you very quickly. I've done very little fishing in my life and I've actually never caught a fish which has been a source of enormous frustration for me. What kind of fish are we? There catching giving us into what it is. We're going after on this trip. So basically it'd be redfish trout that those are like the the basic main target species in Tampa Bay of the Tampa Bay. Fishery is absolutely fantastic but obviously like if If you want to go after something different like it's it's going to be your charter like if you WanNa go after like snapper or if you want to catch a shark or something then obviously Me and my body will will make it happen so but I think it's It's it's it's GonNa be awesome so I I mean whatever it's whatever the whoever whoever the winner is it's you guys show or just going to be out there having a good time so wonderful. I'll leave my fishing jokes another attack. This is serious business here. You're donating this experience to raise lots of money for such an important cause while I have you been quickly. There's been a lot of talk about baseball trying to come back. Which obviously we all want so desperately and you wrote that really nice letter there to the fans. We hear this talk about the possibility of a bubble city. If you will in Arizona or everyone might be what kinds of conversations you've been having with other players about that. And what are your thoughts on it wolf for me. I would like it because you'd have all of us in the same area you'd cut down on travel which would limit Women outside exposure. And for me I I. I was lucky enough to play in the Arizona folly and I it would just be like a a big league version of the Arizona folly and for me I would be out of the fan of it in. There's plenty of complexes plenty of room and I mean this is just my personal idea. And then if you have every team out there at the complexes sharing complexes let's say you have sixteen per complex than you have. You're allowed to have eleven o'clock game. A three o'clock game in a seven o'clock game all the same complex like you'd have teams rotating in and out guys would And then obviously like things would be able to be wiped down between games and stuff like that but I. I think that'd be a good that the good option like if if things don't get like turned into an extremely positive way because ideally we'd like to play in our home stadiums like for me. I love playing in New York and I love playing at city field and but I mean who who knows what can happen. I mean I I think that if playing Arizona is like is one of the only options. I don't think that's a bad idea. I think it's a good idea. Let's all root for it and again you've done so much here you do so much with your own charity homers for heroes and now being part of this all in challenge. We appreciate it very much. Peter have to run. Thank you very much. We'll check in with you again soon. Thank you for doing this. And maybe someday we'll go fishing together. You and I. In the meantime you can go fishing with Pita Lonzo. There were so many athletes across the.

"As all time greatness within five in like a twelve years. Go Hey Lebron has played what seventeen years he's three. Here's what the Brian James in that conversation. I'm going to give everybody to bully. Here's the bullet. If Lebron would've went to Miami and they would actually did not five not six not seven that would have been his chance to me to catapult those people. Go ahead Stephen who that didn't happen. They actually raised his hand. Which I think it was a remarkable moment. You wanted to be respect. I WANNA be respectful to my brother but here. But here's the deal. I don't even say you have to go not five. Not Six not seven. If Lebron James have won four straight in Miami it might be a different discussion if Lebron James had not lost to Dallas in the fashion that he lost. And we don't have to revisit that it might have been a different discussion but when I talk about Lebron James. Here's and certainly. It's not a criticism it's just a but the bottom line is great player. Mount Rushmore as far as I'm concerned what you hold against him is what. Jalen just alluded to what Magic Johnson came into the league with what Jordan came into the league with others Moolah Abroad James had to mature to that point. Remember All Star. Game Jalen alike. Forget whether it was two thousand and eleven two thousand twelve. It's an exhibition game. Greedy Jalen Exhibition All Star Game. Kobe is guarding Lebron and Lebron. Instead of taking it throws the ball into the corner trying to get the past a mellow turns the ball over. And then you saw Kobe de weight and mellow all descend on the Bron- like woody. You do it because if you recall. That was his hickup his unwillingness to take the bull horns say. Move the hell out the way. I'm that dude. He had to mature to that point. They didn't they came into the League. Having it. If there is an indictment of you WanNa call that an indictment against Lebron James in terms of the Mount Rushmore Discussion Jalen. I believe that would be the best argument in terms of mentality not an ability but the mentality. This is my world. All of y'all squirrels trying to get you know what mood the hell out the way. I'll take you to check beginning. Go ahead John. I got ten seconds final word. And we'll get Omar Arnold horseback here so remember Lebron James Three championships in seventeen years. Magic Johnson has like five championships and like thirteen years. Lebron James One yes separate. Three Petes six eight years Bill Russell. Eleven and thirteen years like a level of greatness out. That people aren't going to be. Those are the high scores on video games guys. And nobody's probably gonNA ever taken down. Here's the good news. We have five more weeks to continue. Having these conversations and Stephen An companies will be doing it in twenty minutes when I take comes your way here on. "Of the bottom line? Is he put everything together? Outside of Michael Jordan for that Chicago Bulls team and for him to be so exceptional as an executive yet to be in a position where you win five championships and you're about to win six. You get rid of the start of the season and went six and you tell me Fox. Tom Championship coach. Somebody you hired. You could go eighty two and oh you're not coming back. It seems to make no sense so even though there was the Michael Jordan element and some of the things that motivated him which was great for all of us to see and of course in episode. Two you looked at Scottie. Pippen and his foolishness was signing a seven year deal making two point eight hundred dollars in his last year. What stood out to me most? Was Jerry Krause acting the way that he did and willing to disband this group and more importantly an owner Jerry Reinsdorf who allowed him to do it and also in the process you have one of the greatest plays we've ever seen in our lifetimes in Scotty pippin year. He messed up. He signed a long term deal but to not budge at all not to do anything for the guy. It just appeared to be so heartless and when I look at the Chicago Bulls now in this struggles. It almost seems like it's a welcome to come up. It's because of how they will willing to conduct business back in those days. Yeah Scottie Pippen touched on last night but it was a big factor in that he had had back surgery back injuries and I think he was very concerned about his career being cut short and he wanted to make sure he got money that he would be able to take care of everything and then it turns out to be one of the worst contracts. Anyone has ever signed in recent sports memory. If not longer than that so jail let me come back to you because the conversation here in Stephen a you may have heard it. You know what happens you? Can't I post something on twitter yesterday? Innocent and harmlessly saying you're going to get to see the greatest of all time tonight Michael Jordan. You'RE GONNA love the film and Jalen immediately. People Start Yelling at me about Lebron James. Why is there this that you can't mention this without a turning into that debate and I understand and they're gonNA be a generational a lot of times when it happens during your air. You feel like it's debates. You see it in movies. You see it in music when people start to do list and you see it in sports so there will be people of this generation they call. Lebron James the greatest basketball player that they've seen and for this generation Greenie. He is but for those of us that know more than just a Lebron James era and have a wealth of knowledge about the history of the game. There are some people that played in the league that we're able to achieve a level of greatness that Lebron has not been able to achieve. That's why we call it a Mount Rushmore. Michael Jordan. We know is there. And they're going to be people that WANNA debate but for me in no particular order you can three-car Monte. These people fall are here. Magic Johnson Kareem abdul-jabbar and Bill Russell achieve the level of greatness. That put them ahead of Lebron James on that all time grey list so to me. This argument never has any married Stephen. How about the Michael Browsing? You must hear it well. First of all I view view it slightly differently. Jalen and on the same page when it comes to Michael Jordan. There is no debate. And you know one of the things that annoys me about this generation and and I would say the greedy. I don't know why you give a damn about what people take. They can kick rocks. I mean adoptive mom mentality. I think I think the good Lord every day to my family my Momma blessed to be with that attitude I could give less than a damn what people have to say about my opinions. If I firmly believe what I firmly believe I believe Michael Jordan to beat the goat. I do believe Lebron. James is on the Mount Rushmore but to speak to what Jalen.

We have left <Speech_Music_Male> with Tom Brady on <Speech_Music_Male> his way to Tampa Bay. <Speech_Music_Male> Bruce Arians suggesting <Speech_Music_Male> that anyone <Speech_Music_Male> who thinks he can't feel <Speech_Music_Male> the deep ball anymore is flat <Speech_Music_Male> out wrong. And <Speech_Music_Male> I haven't had Louis <Speech_Music_Male> Riddick on this show <Speech_Music_Male> since this happened <Speech_Music_Male> absolutely. <Speech_Music_Male> I just want to get a quick moment <Speech_Music_Male> from you <Speech_Male> know what I <Speech_Male> mean by this happening. <Speech_Male> Is Tom Brady going to <Speech_Male> Tampa in the first place? <Speech_Male> I've not yet heard. <Speech_Male> How good will they be? <Speech_Male> How good in your mind do <Speech_Male> you think Tom and <Speech_Male> Tampa will be this coming <Silence> season? <Silence> <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> Look I have a lot of <Speech_Male> faith in <Speech_Male> Bruce Arians and the staff <Speech_Male> is put together. I <Speech_Male> know a lot of those guys personally. <Speech_Male> Both on the coaching <Speech_Male> staff <Speech_Male> and in <Speech_Male> the front office and look <Speech_Male> Tom. Brady's the consummate <Speech_Male> pro he someone who <Speech_Male> set the standard for <Speech_Male> this league. <Speech_Music_Male> You know from a very very <Speech_Music_Male> young age and <Speech_Music_Male> he's someone who will continue <Speech_Music_Male> to set. The standard is a tremendous <Speech_Music_Male> amount of risk involved <Speech_Music_Male> with <Speech_Music_Male> him going down there <Speech_Music_Male> because of the fact that he's <Speech_Music_Male> not gonna be able to meet his <Speech_Music_Male> teammates probably until <Speech_Music_Male> training camp starts <Speech_Music_Male> or when training camp starts. <Speech_Music_Male> And <Speech_Music_Male> he's someone who's been used to <Speech_Music_Male> doing something one way <Speech_Music_Male> for a long time and <Speech_Male> I've been involved in these <Speech_Male> kinds of situations I've <Speech_Music_Male> been involved <Speech_Music_Male> in the two thousand eleven <Speech_Music_Male> lockout when <Speech_Male> in Philadelphia. We signed <Speech_Music_Male> multiple multiple <Speech_Music_Male> free agents and <Speech_Music_Male> tried to put them all together <Speech_Music_Male> and training camp. <Speech_Music_Male> And it just doesn't work <Speech_Male> so <Speech_Music_Male> but I think Tampa <Speech_Male> on you know on <Speech_Male> paper. We'll have the opportunity <Speech_Male> and had the ability <Speech_Male> to be very <Speech_Male> very formidable <Speech_Male> team but I know how <Speech_Male> challenging this can be <Speech_Male> and this is going to be no different <Speech_Male> for Tom. In the buccaneers <Speech_Male> overall. <Speech_Male> But it's GonNa be fun <Speech_Male> to watch. I know that <Speech_Male> they're going to give us content <Speech_Male> for days man. We're going to <Speech_Male> take taking this team <Speech_Male> and not picking it <Speech_Male> apart and putting it back together. <Speech_Male> But they've <Speech_Male> got a long road ahead <Speech_Male> of them because I know how challenging <Speech_Male> this kind of thing can <Speech_Male> be. It's <Speech_Male> an interesting thing. <Speech_Male> We talk a lot about <Speech_Male> how the rookies <Speech_Male> will have to adapt <Speech_Male> to having much <Speech_Male> less time to work with <Speech_Male> everybody. Under <Speech_Male> these unusual circumstances <Speech_Male> that Brady <Speech_Male> is the furthest thing it can <Speech_Male> be from a rookie? But it'll affect <Silence> him to <Silence> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> most Everley G. <Speech_Male> and you think about <Speech_Male> Brady's career. He <Speech_Male> likes to bring his receivers <Speech_Male> in. <Speech_Male> He likes to get report <Speech_Male> with these guys even <Speech_Male> before. Gm <Speech_Music_Male> tippety

"Remains to this day. The highest rated basketball game ever played in the United States College or Pro. Over forty million people watched magic and Larry Begin what we now know as March madness in earnest. And we are delighted. That Magic Johnson has a few minutes to join us this morning and remember it magic good morning and thank you and I would just ask you as you think back now all these years later. What are the things that come to your mind when you look back on that game? We'll Greenie. I think you know the first thing is that Larry. Bird led his team to a thirty three in season. And we we struggled in the beginning of the big ten but we came on strong at the end and we won. I think ten straight games and we really started playing. Well we played our best ball doing the NCAA tournament lead into the tournament. I should say and all you along you know it. It looked like this guy named Larry. Bird was from special at Indiana state. You know you because both teams from the Midwest we. I'd heard about Labor Iraq. And what he was doing it in the end the state because most time at that time it was more regional covers the west national covers so We felt like while we were watching this this team and this player named Larry Bird play and then we got hot and all of a sudden they were upsetting and beating everybody in the Ncaa Tournament and we were doing the same thing and not too many times greeting as the two best teams in College Ba College basketball meat for the championship and the two best players at the same time so there was a bill that want to intake tournament. started that. I pay TV NBC and all of them were hoping that Indiana State and Michigan State would meet for the championship game. And that's exactly what happened and we were scared to death because the semi finals we blew out pin. But Larry Bird went off on the Paul and I think he only missed like four shots in that game and then scored thirty six points. Thirty eight point. Something like that and we were like. Oh this dude it for real. What are we gonNA have to do to stop them? And we tried to contain them. The best we could and then we end up winning the game but we saw that too stars were better than when we had a guy. Gray Kesse was incredible college basketball player and we felt that was going to be the difference and data. Was I remember it? I can't believe it's forty one years. I remember like it was yesterday and so many people talk about how important that game turns out to be the magnitude of it. March madness as we know it now really can be traced back to that day. Did you have any idea how big a deal this game was beyond yourselves as you were preparing to play it and playing it? No no no. We didn't have no idea it was going to be that big We felt we knew and I knew it was big because again. That bird was college player of the year right and I came in second so you again you got the two best players playing and the two best teams at that time because they beat everybody that was in front of them and we did the same thing and Notre Dame was a big Team at that time and and we beat them and they thought that Notre Dame had a chance to win a championship because people forget they had like five or six pros on that team led by Kelly Puka and bill laimbeer but we took care of business but I think we understood how big it got because they always feature you know bird versus magic service with magic and And neither one of us I think let the college basketball fans down Because we both had great years that year and at the end of the day I've been leaked to this guy for where ever ever since that game I've been linked to labor but I gotTa tell a story right. Quick greeting people don't realize one thing labor and I had never sat on the bench ever in our lives so do on that year we played for the will imitation. We played in the World Invitational Tournament for the United States and Jobe Hall. The coach of the Kentucky wildcats was the coach to start and he's decided to start all his most of his Kentucky guys as well as feel for so Larry Bird. I sat on the bench. Can you believe that we sat on the bench? That was the first time in history. That both Larry and I found a bit but when we got into the Game Greenie we turned it out and the fans went crazy right. We will only be obtained when we were sitting on the bench when we came in. We went up thirty and we were throwing behind. The back passes no look passes to each other. That's when I knew how special Larry Bird West and I went back and told everybody I just saw the greatest player. I don't care black or white this due to play some basketball you know magic you and I've had many conversations about how your relationship with Larry evolved over the years because again it began that day and then in the NBA. You met so many times and I know how close a relationship you have today. Will you call him today and buses chops about the fact? That forty-one today you guys know you know how man Larry we get to know. We're Bo- steel competitive. People say no. I won't rub it into him. He you know Larry. He knows how special we needed each other right. He brought out the best in me. I brought out the best in him. We shaved March madness and then we changed the NBA as well because at that time my first championship we on tape delay and thank God for the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers we changed the NBA finals. The way it looks today it was. We were responsible for that. Both Larry Bird and myself. I don't think that anyone who knows the history of it would argue against that in any way I was. GonNa ask you about the Lakers here but but in just a moment that I have left I feel moved as we sit here during this unique time in American history. Just to ask your thoughts on how you're doing how you're feeling in the role that sports plays and everything you again. You began march madness as we know it. You're you're rivalry with Larry. Bird revolutionized American sports as we know what to this day it's made the NBA. What it is to this day and I just wonder as we all sit here and we missed sports together just the thoughts that go through your mind today as you reminisce about all of that well first of all I wanNA thank you and get up. I WanNa thank you know. Espn for giving us something to hang on to in these tough times. I WANNA tell people. Please practice social distance thing. Stay at home because that's the only way that we're going to defeat this virus. I WanNa think oh the nurses and doctors in around the country. I want to thank all the grocery store workers who are still going to work each and every day and making sure that we have food and you know when you think about first responders all. We want to thank them. I think you know we have to stay together. We have to pray. We have to make sure that everybody in our family is safe. And we're all doing the right thing and Sports is so important to world so so normally everybody looks forward to sports to get away from the everyday life right to get away from everything. That's really the you know the mortgage and their their job and on and on and on and right now we don't have that so we need to really just stay together and keep our families safe watch movies at home or whatever you want to do at home until the virus until we defeat it and This has probably been the toughest thing that we the world has ever had to go through because right now we don't have sports to help us through our every day life and I hope that soon we can defeat this virus or work contain it so we can get back to watching you know golf the NBA and I I have enjoyed your show talking about so bob learn more about football swagger out guys dominique. All of them Dan. So thank you for having your show and and help us get through our everyday lives because it's been great that Espn you guys are still working and I just prayed it. Everybody's stay safe magic. I speak for everybody when I say it makes us feel better to hear your voice the best to you and your family you stay safe and we will see you as soon as we possibly can thank you so much thank you. I'm coming on the show I I will forward to it. Thank you very much. Thank you for doing this. Great Magic Johnson with US forty one years ago today. He played the most famous basketball game. And still to this day. The most watched basketball game in American history. We will be here for you all day long. Espn coming up.

"The NFL season. Forget week one Louis Riddick. Soccer about week eight middle of the season. Who will be the raiders starting quarterback? Yeah look I still think it's going to be Derek Carr your conventional wisdom. Says Maybe Marcus Mariota has a Ryan Tannehill type of scenario play itself out but I still believe Derek Carr is going to be one of those people who's going to rise to the challenge here. There's a lot of speculation surrounding misspent. Marcus is signing but there is a great quarterback. I think someone who's GonNa rise to the challenge. Someone who John. Maybe looking for a replacement in long term but I still think he's going to be a guy who who last the twenty twenty season as a starter in Oakland. Have About Las Vegas new with right. Get used to that New England. Who's The quarterback in the wing? Still think it's going to be Jerry instead of what? This is a guy who I believe Josh mcdaniels and Bill Belichick really do believe in. He's someone who put a lot of time into someone who they believe at this point in his career. He's right where Jimmy Garoppolo was comparable developmental state. I think they will still look to add a veteran. Look to add some more competition you know to go along with Brian Work but I think he'll be the starter. We'll talk more about him later. Meanwhile Marcus how about the chargers the La Charges? Who's their quarterback? Tyrod Taylor was still a starting quarterback and I I believe Anthony. Lynn has a lot of confidence in tyrod Taylor. Obviously he was in Cleveland play. Well suffered the injury. Baker Mayfield came in this type office that they want to run this quarterback. That's very athletic. Tyrod Taylor it'd be the starter I and that means Cam. Newton won't be He's one of the one of the places we've talked about him possibly going. We all understand all that he accomplished in Carolina. But now he's a free agent yesterday. "It he knows that Dallas Right now is between a rock and a hard place as far as trying to get this done. Because as ed laid out looking for them under if they just have to keep carrying him on the franchise tag that absolutely just hamstrings them as far as they're planning both this year and in subsequent years as far signing players. So really it's going to be about. How much money are they willing to boost up? Maybe his average hourly his average yearly salary willing to boost the signing bonus and then and then he will go ahead and add on another year to give them some salary cap relief in the short term. It's all going to be about give and take and right now. It doesn't sound like deck because of the fact that he knows that he has leveraged his timing on his side in. The situation is such that they need in there. It doesn't sound like he's willing to do that right now. So I mean the contract. Negotiations ultimately are always about both sides giving in and not necessarily getting everything that they want. So somebody walks away not getting everything but right now. It doesn't seem like he's willing to do so. And that's why we are where we are. Markets here there in Dallas here former cowboy. You live there day in day out of a second here because I want to get to other things in your mind. Is there any way? This doesn't get worked out. That he winds up playing this season on the franchise. Tag there to me. There's no way this doesn't get worked out because first of all to lose point like for for future terms. What are you GonNa do with that? Plays a franchise tag this year and decides to walk or decided not to sign this franchise tag with a new head coach. I think the drivers for Frederick Retirement puts even more pressure on his organization to get it done as well having that back there and obviously getting them in the camp so Mike McCarthy and and they can get this.

"I it's it's like goosebumps type stuff. It really is especially remember that year. You're too didn't it didn't work out for the mets but you know they went on that wrong there. In September and of course they ran into Brian Jordan and the braves and it was just heartbreaking the way that that it ended and heartbreaking for the Yankees as well the way that it ended that year against the diamondbacks but we always talk about sports especial nature how sometimes sometimes it transcends just the game on the field and it just it's in your lives you know and last night was just one of those days where it was more than baseball. Game was more than the mets and the diamondbacks. It's playing a game at Citi field. Just it just had that that different feel about it from the second that you turned it on and watch them do what they did. So that was great. It was great and I just I just hope that this continues and the rest of September. We're talking about a team. That's in a race and I can't imagine how they're not going to be with the way that they're playing in their two games back man just I I walk past Harris out there. You know when they got swept by the cubs in the braves when we came in here and they Austat you know the game in the ninth inning to the nationals you know harasses really down and he's like Oh. It's over. It's over. I'm like harassed. Don't give up man show some spine here yeah. I know you're out talking to these people in the bullpen here. Show some spine. Let's let's stay with it. Got A lot of baseball left to play and I think at that time even the fan and graphs percentage to make the playoffs thing the mets were still double digit percentage favorites to get there like you know eighteen percent or nineteen percent and that was even with those seven even losses they had between the cubs the braves and that one loss at the nationals and now here they are there to outmanned if they would've won three and four in that but I don't WanNa play games. We tried tried to play that game yesterday. I was gonNA drive you crazy but I don't know man is not what special and and Steven Matt's worked through that that awful second inning I know it was hot and steamy and he was sweating right and all that other stuff but give him credit for fighting through it. He showed US something now. Marcus stroman has to show us something today yeah absolutely and it's it's it's really a repeat every time he takes the mound were saying the same stuff leading in and then the same stuff at the end still waiting for like a dominating perform. I know I know well this is he's got the opportunity a tuna today to change the narrative. He's got an opportunity to make everybody feel great about him being on the team. It's another opportunity for him and hopefully this time tomorrow. We'll be talking about how he finally showed up for them in the biggest spots..

Jalen Ramsey to shadow Tyreek Hill in Week 1, nearly a year after calling him a 'return specialist'

"Jalen ramsey ramsey <hes> the jaguars defensive coordinator jalen ramsey will shadow tyreek hill in week one okay <hes> one of the reasons why we all know that that's significant is because because <hes> ramsey called hilly return specialist last year was g q magazine a return <hes> i think he did and then he i think he then basically success. He's a return specialist member. It is somebody just laid into return specialist because that's how he made the proble as a return specialist right right and then he would lean into the microphone and say the name return specialist which is by the way a one of the one of the worst c._b._s.
