Are Dog Owners' Expectations for Training Unrealistic?
"Is the owner's expectations when they go get dog training? What do you think their expectations are? I think that a lot of owners drop off dogs to do a board and train and expect the dog to be fixed by the end of the board. Just hand me back a big, juicy hamburger that I can now eat, you know, pretty much no effort whatsoever. They watch some video or some other thing that, oh, it's a different dog, so much better. It just doesn't always work that way. Or it is a different dog. It's just not a complete process. Right. Yes. Yeah, I agree. I think most people think, oh, especially if it's a board and train because it's more an immersive training, more intense, I think they think they're one and done. Like I dropped my dog off two, three weeks later, I come back and I get a perfect dog no more behavior issues, no more leech point, no more this, no more that. I mean, done. We're done. Day train, you know, it's hard to know what other people's expectations would be. We, I think, do a really good job of trying to set the right expectation from training. So we're pretty blunt about day and train. And for those of you who don't know what a day and train is, that would be where you would drop your dog off during the day, in the morning, pick them up at the afternoon and you do that one day or two days a week and then you do homework in between. We're very brutal. If you are not going to be consistent three times a day, homework minimum, you are wasting your money and you are wasting your dog's time and your time because it will not work because there's not enough repetitions going on. So I think with day and train, we've managed the, we personally anyway, manage the expectations really well. I think where people get screwed up is they go to like a group class training or maybe a Petco or a board and train. And I think they, people still have the wrong expectations with whatever one they're going to. You know, anything that's like Petco, you know, four or six or even eight 45 -minute sessions with six dogs in a 10 -foot by 12 -foot area, not a lot of training going on. Mostly that's socialization and an introduction to structure and obedience. And there will probably be at least one dog that barks most of the time. And most of the Petco trainers are, of course there's a few that are, but most of them are not actually trainers. If you handed them your dog that's pulling a leash and said, could you please work on this? They, we've hired a couple, they can't even hold the leash. They don't know how to hold a leash correctly. So they sure aren't going to be able to fix a dog with behavioral problems. They are reading a book or winging it. Personal experience. That's it. So let's dig into board and trains first. I think you both hit it on the head. People are kind of thinking a one and done. What's a reasonable expectation that people should have? Well, I mean, even that's a pretty like wide question to ask. Let's go with a normal regular. So let's establish a ground rule. We're talking about pretty no behavioral issues, no emotional issues, just a dog that doesn't know what they're supposed to do. I think what would, what should be expected is the dog is going to be able to do the core commands. Whatever core commands companies are saying for us, for example. We talk about heels, sits, place, stays or implied stays, recalls, things like that. I think by the time that, and down. So by the time like your dog, your dog is done, especially if they're doing a three week board and train or something like that, they should at least know all of those things. If they don't, then I don't know, the trainer gypped you or something and they should do them with a reasonable amount of distractions, whatever the company went over with distance duration. So what do you mean by distance? So five, 10 feet away, depends on what program you did. Like a two week, obviously it's not going to be as good as a three or four week, but you should really set those boundary, well ground rules of what you expect when you first meet them and they should, the dog trainer, you mean? Yeah, they should exceed those in a perfect world because basic core commands aren't really that. So I think the easiest way for owners to have a reasonable expectation is to ask the trainer, what expectations should I have when my dog completes your training?

"Did raise its full year forecast citing strong results over the Thanksgiving week and progress on its strategic growth plan so the retailer now expects a full year comparable sales decline of about eight and a half percent to nine percent that does compare with a prior forecast for decrease of as much as ten percent so those comparable store sales which we know is a key retail metric did fall eight percent for the prior quarter but that was better than Wall Street was anticipating so looking at that stock it had been down 37 percent through close but looking at that jump today of course another retailer reporting Dollar Tree DLTR slipping nearly one percent it did report comparable sales for the third quarter that did miss the consensus estimate due to weaker than expected performance at its family dollar unit Dollar Tree also did cut its annual comparable sales forecast for family dollar and slightly lowered the division's net sales guidance of course discount store a guy who was a first -order mathematician pack john i don't even know what the british experience maybe imperial college in london you would know but this guy it was the real deal academically and yet he did not think much dynamics and mathematics of security analysis he sort of walked ratio game yes i think i think that was another critical part of the virtue of success was that they uh at heart they still had what was basically a ben graham opinion so throughout i weren't interested in the dynamics of the market they were asked interested in how much is this worth can i buy it for less than it's worth uh and that really ultimately underpinned everything they did it was a much more common sensical approach and it makes much more sense going if you're to do what they did which is avoid you know the big diversification that goes with mathematical techniques and just back themselves with a concentrated portfolio and john you know i guess what i'm learning i think a lot of people are probably learning today's as they read more and more about uh charlie monger is you know he really was influential on mr buffett in terms of its and here's the quote from in buffett's words own it's far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price boy how important was that over the years for percher hathaway i think that's what turns warren buffett from a really great value investor in the tradition he actually went to columbia business school he was taught by ben graham himself the father of uh value investing that it turns him from a great value investor to a great if not of the greatest ever investor by taking those principles and applying them broadly if you've got a company that is really good then just paying a fair price for it can still be thoroughly worked at you you see the uh expansion into looking at um rather than uh the graham idea of seeing if you've got a margin of safety the idea became to look for an economic moat is this a protected company are these earnings going to carry on into the future and that adaptation in buffett's approach seems to have come more from monger than from buffett himself and your wonderful palace folks i'll get this out on twitter you talk about the home run investments coca -cola and apple do they have a home run investment right now other than apple did charlie monger leave "Quick takes Tim stenotic from Bloomberg radio. Shares of petco sold off following earnings this week after the company cut its adjusted earnings per share and net revenue guidance for the full year. An analyst of Baird called the pet health and wellness giants forecast reset quote much needed. So to find out more about the company's miss and where it goes from here amid persistent inflation and a tight labor market, Bloomberg surveillance co host Paul Sweeney and I spoke with petco chairman and CEO, Ron Coughlin. Great companies bro, even in tough economies. So we had a 4% comp, which is a good number. We did not have the inventory issues that other companies are talking about most retailers are talking about inventory, excess inventory and having to discount. We didn't have that situation. We continue to see a positive mix shift towards premium and super premium brands. So a lot of good news, but at the same time, there is some pressure from the inflation on discretionary items like toys, tennis balls, leashes. And that pressure is our highest profit area, so that puts some pressure on the P and L. So in your P and L on your P and L, talk to us about inflation in terms of your cost of goods sold. Where do you guys see it in your P and L? Yeah, so freight would be a big one. Labor would be another one labor. We pretty much have in our model, but I don't think anybody had the freight freight inflation that we saw in their model because the gas really popped in March April type time period. Coming down is it helping you? It's starting to come down, but the freight gets tied to the inventory, so it doesn't show up in the P and L till later in Q three and into Q four. I actually have been in a store on second avenue bought a bunch of toys. I want to do shout out to Cheddar Lee, who was really lovely because I have a dog, a puppy that shoes through things in 30 seconds. So I came up with an armful of toys, and I said, help me help me, what's gonna, you know, last, and she was really wonderful. I have to say though, I noticed a lot of empty shelves. And I was curious in the dog toy area. Is it supply chain problems? What was it, or is it just people, I don't know, it looked like you were sold out. You know, there's not a single vendor that said, I think there's gonna be a million new pets in 2020 and other million new pets in 21 and elevated pets this year. So all of the vendors have been scaling their manufacturing. The bad news is that the supply lag, the demand, the good news is that supply and capacity is coming up now. I was in a brand new plant in Dallas for honest kitchen. Hills just announced major investments in their manufacturing. So that capacity really takes about two years to get new capacity up and that capacity is coming up now. We're seeing improving supply week after week. Talk to us about the demand side of this business, the pet business. It seemed like during the pandemic, a lot of folks went out and got themselves a pet a cat, a dog, something like that. I'm not sure where those owners are today where those pets are today, but how did that impact your business and how you're dealing with it today? Well, if you look at our business, we're up 34% on a three year basis. Our E comm business is up a 140%. Services business up 60%. So we have scaled tremendously on the back of that. But make no mistake about it. Today, 2022, the predictions are for it to still be elevated in terms of petted options versus 2019 pre-pandemic. And those stories about there being more relinquishments are really just stories. Relinquishments are below pre-pandemic. So the supply of pet and the pet universe is only growing. And we tend to do better in terms of capturing more than our fair share of new pets. So why don't you guys pull in your guidance? It's really that pressure on disposable income. That's it. And supplies. If you look at our food, our food's up double digits. Yeah. You look at our growth or sales. You look at our services, up double digits. It's really that segment of supplies, toys, balls, leashes, collars, that kind of thing. The rest of the business is highly, highly recession resistant. And as I said, we continue to trade up whether that's in food, to premium kibble or fresh frozen, or even our ready fashion brand. That was up double digit, which is kind of a higher end supplies brand. Do you talk recession at all? Of course we do. We have to plan for every eventuality. Do you expect it? A story the other day, 70% prediction of recessions. We need to be planned for that. So we're doing two things. One is making sure that our cost structure is prepared to navigate through that. And the second thing is what does that mean? There's hiring components. There's location components. There's travel components. You cut back and all the areas that aren't revenue generating, direct revenue generating, to make sure that if your revenue is impacted, your cost structure is not in line with not out of line with your revenue profile. The second piece, though, is making sure you're more attractive to customers who are going through a recession, right? So things like bundles, right? Bundle tennis balls, things like federal care program, which is a membership program that gets discounts across our portfolio. People can save $300 with that program. Mega packs. So you change your offering or you adjust your offering for the consumer mindset as they navigate through a recession. "To them. And I would try a bigger size box. So have two different sizes of box. And try using less litter. I know it seems kind of weird. Putting less litter in there as well, and experimenting with the amount of litter you put in. Do you use the scented or unscented? Uncensored. Okay, good. That's what we recommend. The unscented kiss cats have a really strong sense of smell. And talking about the smells that is like dirt. What is the brand name of that? Are you allowed to? You know, you know what? And I can't remember, I can see it. It'll be if you just go to a pet store in your area, they will have it. It's relatively new. But like I said, it mimics more like what they would use in the world because that's my feeling is she's been doing it since she was four months old. That's what she was used to because they get trained with the litter very early on when their kittens between four and 8 weeks actually start using the litter box. Right, so she was used to going outside probably. We don't know what her life story is. Right. Don't you wish they could tell you? I just look at my cats and go, I wish you guys could just talk, right? Yes. The two that we have are both strays. And we feed them halo. That's a great diet. It's a very good one. Because the oldest one, if we give her anything cheap vomits, okay, so she's sensitive. Just wonder how much in the wild she was before we got her because her little stomach is so sensitive. But I've tried all kinds of different letters. I will go back up to petco and see what they have. And tell them, tell them that you talked with me and that I was recommending the one that's more like dirt substance than the litter because she just probably doesn't like the feel of it. It sounds like right. She's just not using it to cover up her feces and you guys should not have to go do that for her. So you can take a hold of her polls to show her how you've done it. Yeah, no, that won't work. That won't work. Right. And it's funny because it's interesting because the other kitten is doing what most cats would do. But it's something with her psychologically that she doesn't like. And then what you could do is, if she does do it, you could positively reinforce her when she does do the behavior that you want, like if you have any treats once she jumps out of the box. And it is a mistake. I mean, we praise her. We do everything, but it certainly hasn't worked. Well, yeah, I do think I've treated, I've been a vet for 23 years, and I have seen this before. And it's because they don't like the substrate that's in the litter box. And sometimes they're using people using too much. So you gotta try varying the amount that you put in there, try a different size box as well. And try this, I'm sorry, I wish I could think of the name

"From Bloomberg radio Shares a petco Rowling this past week after the company revealed earnings beats on both the top and bottom line for the fourth quarter and it upped its full year outlook for adjusted earnings and revenues Okay we all know this Pets all the rage during the pandemic I know somebody sitting close to me right now who got a new doggie Got a new puppy You did How was your puppy done Really good Okay good Well it seems very well Really well yeah Well probably good and well If it's being trained well right Yes Well it does seem that the trend is continuing even as the threat of COVID wanes With more on how the business achieved a 7th consecutive quarter of double digit comp store sales growth We spoke with petco chairman and CEO of petco Ron Coughlin We made a big bet that we were going to develop an ecosystem of the full offering that pet parents won So we have our own vets We have grooming We have training We have supplies We have food and we do it in stores We also do it digitally And that was a big bet versus trying to be expert at one part of the thing which is what basically everyone else does In 54% of pet parents say that's what they want They want to partner to manage their pet lives I'm sure it's not easy for you I used to go to one place for a bit One place for a grooming one place for food My hunch is you probably do that right now Kind of still do Yeah But I do a lot online in terms of products And that simplifies my world Yeah but if you could do it all in one place and then that company knows you and knows your data and the groomer knows the same thing that the vet knows we take better care of you And so that strategy is working The second thing that's working is our omnichannel strategy 80% of our online orders get fulfilled through our pet care centers We call them micro distribution centers That means there's faster to the customer and lower cost Does that mean they walk into or no It's separate distribution centers So there's three Your local petco right It had three different versions One we might ship from that store to you if you ordered online Two you could same day delivery which you can't do online or three you might go in and pick it up if you're short on order Oh I need to get food on my way home and bopa is just like you order a head on your Starbucks as an example So that's really working for us And then our vet business is working And we had a big announcement last week We had a joint venture with a vet partner and we bought them out last week We announced it And so we're bringing 800 veterinary professionals into our system And one of the biggest questions I get from investors is can you hire enough vets You might have hired my vet who we loved and adored and who became part of a bigger practice and then is gone Our investors seeing the story though are the hearing this story because the stock is doing well today but it did hit a record low in late February It's down 30% from its highs of last year What are investors missing here Yeah I mean we got caught in some of the market downturn that happened And we just need to prove it over time And that's why I'm so proud of the 7 quarters of double digit growth with the margin expansion And also our bullishness was evidenced by our guide which was above consensus There were people who questioned whether we could grow in the second half of the year We did so at double digit rate there were people who questioned whether we can lap next year And we showed a big a nice guide going forward that people appreciate And I think that's why the stock is responding In addition to the fact that I think that there is a premium for companies that can execute in these times Whether it's the labor issues whether it's the different economic issues people who can execute or getting a premium right now What segment of your business sees the biggest growth Because she talked about a couple of different things And there's omnichannel There's digital There's in the store There's the vet services They're selling pets What is it What is it that really juices the top and bottom line and profitability I love all my kids But some I love a little bit more The truth is they're all growing But if you look at our digital business we grew a 143% on a two year basis We more than doubled our digital business in the last two years I mean that's astounding How often do you more than double a business that already had scale in two years We did a 25 last quarter So how much of revenues is digital Purely digital Yeah digital is between 15 and 20% And how much of somebody who is digital then walks in the store What are you looking for when you're omnichannel I was just talking to chipotle They're omnichannel right They have chipotle and your digital only and go to the store You can use the app There's all these different things How many how many people are going to the stores buying online You want somebody who's all in That's the way the world is going So if I go through the recent sequence 2000 happened and everyone went online right Even my father who loves going to stores all of a sudden became an online customer for the first time Then in 21 people thought maybe they won't come back They came back to our stores in droves And more and more it is this omnichannel customer We call it retail three where you really bring this promise on any channel that we've all been talking about for years together Not only for that experience but also as fulfillment centers You hear target talking about using their targets as fulfillment centers It's killer the strategy got me to go to a Target Store in a long time And we truly believe we're one of the retail three leaders in defining that.

"We saw a few different stories play out especially with target and Walmart this week sort of absorbing those costs rather than passing them on to consumers How are you thinking about it right now Yeah so we have a highly inelastic category We have the highest spending pet parents in our portfolio So the way we see it is we have offerings for every consumer So if you want a high end fresh frozen we have it If you want a premium you want a value We have a great value in our own brand wholehearted So we make sure we have an offering for everybody But at the same time we are able to pass through a lot of that pricing Hey what about getting workers To be your man your stories How tough is that Yeah well in the last year we had double digit increases in wages We are bonus we just paid out 40% above target because the mantra is as the company does better employees do better And we've done a lot of things and in return what we're seeing is our retention amongst our pet care center our store employees full-time employees is above 19 in terms of retention and actually believe this or not we had a 40% increase in applications versus the beginning of the year So we feel good about how we're heading into the holiday Save all the workers you want We feel good about how many of the holiday It's a tight market But as I said our applications are up 40% so All right We got to run Thank you so much We appreciate it Yeah always great to have you on Coughlin of course he is the chairman and CEO of petco joining us here in our interactive broker studio You are listening to Bloomberg business wet I was going to say wolf wolf All right it is a great ticker Come on All right let's get to where the national news Everybody.

Southern California Real Estate Report
The battle to develop the Sports Arena - burst 2
"Today on the southern california real estate report we give an update on a sports arena center and it's becoming quite a battle state. good morning. Welcome to southern california real estate report. This is bob mcguire. Daniel wise coming from san diego california so back in the news. Pechanga arena chain sports arena. Whatever you wanna call it. It's it's kind of the. It's kind of like watching a sporting match like you're like who's going to take the lead. Yeah who's going to win out what's plan from. Different parts of the crowd right exactly. What what ooh. Who has the best ideas and plans. You know who's gonna accommodate. The city's needs fast. So for those of you. That are new to this. The sports arena. Property was last year thrown up basically as a request for proposal to redevelop it. But what happened was was that that was premature because the land actually has to be used for an affordable component of housing. That wasn't considered in the first proposal. So it's kind of interesting so so what happened was it was basically put out as as basically like most real estate. Proposals or requests for proposals are put out. It was put out as basically a best and final and they said. Hey you know you. Mr developer come out and give us your best and final on how you would redevelop this. The surplus land that we have around our sports arena facility. Which by the way. The sports arena in this town if anyone is local for our local listeners. I should say those of us. That are familiar with the sports arena. I mean it's it's really dated so this is long overdue to get this done for a city. That's our size and for a city that now is gonna have what we're going to have in mission valley with the new. Sds you the football stadium and what we already have in. Petco pet khoza class aid stadium. That's rivals any baseball park in the country and the sports has like this really. It's just as really old decrepit building but people love it and they love going to the goals games because they can say close to the ice and things like that so it has some kind of some neat things about it but the building itself is like one thousand nine hundred seventy s the developer. That came out was brookefield. Who has quite a few properties. Here in san diego so there are known developer there known quantity and out of all the best in finals. That's who the city chose now. They made a huge mistake right because in the summer when it went up to the state to get approval of the state turn around said. Now you can't do it because there's no affordable on this property so you have to literally stop and now turn around and go find not only. Somebody's redevelop the sports arena. But also you need to find an affordable developer and then you need to have so do market rate units so brookefield has come back around and now they're saying hey. We understand that. This was a mistake. We're ready to do it again. So originally the units that the total coverage was going to be approximately twenty two hundred residential units but now they're actually increasing that up to like four thousand residential units if you stay under a certain square footage right around six to eight hundred sixty eight hundred square feet. So obviously you can do a large affordable you know component of studio units or you know micro units things like that. That are pretty popular as affordable housing options. You know for single people and people that fit into the average area meaning category. Which they're saying is going to be obviously found by hud and it's like thirty to sixty percent thirty two eighty some eight. I mean you have to remember that. Like six hundred to eight hundred feet. You can of one better in that. Like dont necessarily studios of yeah. Yeah yeah that's true. They could be nice. One bedrooms one in twos in six to eight hundred square feet but but to get the density that they're talking about. I think there's going to be a lot. I guess i should say i should. You're right a one hundred percent and it's there's going to be a smaller. There's going to be smaller. Units so the original plan had a lot of residential houses like sf are and townhomes and things like that so that is probably going to go away to get this additional density that they need so it's going to be interesting. They're going to have to escape park. They're going to have office and retail. They're going to have restaurants so for those of you. That don't know this area. The site is huge. So insight and brookefield is in the running but that toll brothers is trying to trying staged a comeback. Well so toll. Brothers is trying to stage a comeback. But what's really interesting too. Is it so this is now an open bid so they put out basically the so so. The city got the state's approval and now they have basically put out that. Hey this land is available surplus. Here's what you need to do. So there's going to be like you know. Basically on sunday there's going to be a presentation so also condamne who is a local real estate investment firm here that owns apartments nationwide. They're one of the largest apartment owners in the country. Owner and operator i should say so they. They have a big management platform. They're also going to throw their hat in to be the developer on this project as well. They've already it. Sounds like

Ancient Dogs Had Complex Genetic Histories
"Dogs were the first animals to be domesticated stuck with us as we changed lifestyles from hunting gathering to farming to city living. The dog is a species that is intimately linked to hyun history. Anders bergstrom a post. Doc at the francis crick institute in london. He and his colleagues studied the genomes of twenty seven. Ancient dog bones dug up around the world. They found by eleven thousand years ago. We see the dog to start to diversify united kalihi so we find evidence of at least five major lineages of dogs already at this time. Dog remains have been found in europe asia in the americas in a pattern similar to help. Humans moved mixed to a large degree. The history of dogs dog seems have been shaped by human history. So like the reflecting. How what you must moved. They would have brought her dogs with them. Ancient humans clearly found dogs to be very useful in the arctic. Evidence at sled. Dogs actually emerged very early on people. Use them for the purpose of leading perhaps as early as ten thousand years ago. A few modern breeds like the african basenji new guinea singing dog or australian dingo are similar to one of the five ancient lineages most other modern breeds derived at least in part from european dogs which came to dominate dog genomes. Back for five thousand years ago. There's a great diversity of dogs in europe but at some point there was probably a single population that expanded in basically replaced other populations in europe. So this was something that we did not predict sunday. You couldn't really see just from studying. Archaeology look the dna with all this diversity. In the past that is not represented in present-day dogs. The study is in the journal. Science where you'll find maps of dog migrations over time one odd finding about eleven thousand years ago it looks like dogs. Spread more widely than humans did does actually opposes. We don't understand. So how could the dogs spread so quickly widely. We're we're not aware of any human migrations. At this time that could have facilitated this spread of the dog but some of it spreads very quickly to two human groups all across the world perhaps because he was a very useful thing for his early human together. The groups humans were also useful to dogs prehistoric. Petco didn't exist so dogs. Probably humans did and is human started to form oath species quickly adapted to digest more grains. The number of copies of a starch digesting gene in both humans and dogs increased in the generation following the invention of agriculture. Yes oh that. That's a very striking example of convergent evolution between humans. And dogs. way it's gonna be interesting to think of the dog. Despite reactions, California says virus vaccine can be used
"News for l A and other counties in California that have been scrambling to get enough doses of the Corona virus vaccines to inoculate everyone who's eligible. State health officials have given the green line to restart using a batch of modern, a vaccine that was put on the shelf after a handful of people experienced allergic reactions. KCRW's Darryl Saxman has the latest The state's top epidemiologist, says a safety review found no scientific basis to continue the pause and that vaccinations with the Moderna doses should resume immediately. That decision frees up more than 300,000 doses to county cities in hospitals struggling to obtain supplies. Earlier this week, the state Department of Health recommended not using that batch of modern a vaccine after what was described as fewer than 10. People inoculated at San Diego's Petco Park developed severe reactions. Those problems were not reported in any other county that received vaccines from the same batch. Doctor. Erica Pan, the state's top infectious disease specialist, said in the statement that the safety review that involved Mo Derna and health agencies found no cause for concern. She said the findings quote should continue to give Californians confidence that vaccines are safe and effective.

S so what you just established. Is that the right now there are two systems in San Diego. At least one was UCSD And the other one was Sharpe. Grossmont. Right? Exactly. Yeah, well, I went to register. It either gave me to go to instructions for Sharpe Grossmont or gave me instructions to go to Petco. So I originally scheduled at Petco and then I thought I wanted it sooner, so I tried to reschedule through Sharp in that was hard to Cal backstop ord was very complicated. Everybody had complaints that we filled it out three or four times trying to get the appointment and we never got it and you had to enter in all the data before we let you see the appointment. Now, Petco. I was able to get all the appointment after some pre screening on by on by once I scheduled the appointment and sent me the email with my log in information. And that I created the account with U C F D and then from there, everything was flying. It gave me a place notifications and to fill out my chart, and then that's where I scheduled. My next injection. It comes up in your email, like right away like a couple hours after your appointment. So UCSD system in your opinion, far superior to the Sharpe Grossmont one. Yeah, with Sharps using Cal Vax daughter work and that one was hard to maneuver. So the one that I went through to you see if D and Petco was was streamlined and Everybody. I know that went through. Petco was able to get an appointment. There was four of us that had appointments yesterday, and we all had Successful vaccinations. I don't tell me about this. What? What's your occupation? How did you get onto the preferred less? I'm building manager for position, So I have direct patient contact with patients. So where I'm in private practice, so She had to write me a letter saying that I am a tiered employees and that I have direct patient contact and I work in a physician's office. I had to use the letter. I had to use my name badge and I had to use my idee when I went yesterday, and that's all I needed to present once I got there so that you went you went you. Where do you live On a Sunday you went from Where? To? Where? To peck. Oh, yeah, I live in the mesa. That's why I was trying to get the shark breath. Okay, And that's where I was able to get my vaccine. And you know, my girlfriend lives in a bowl and she also went to Petco and she would find I send her the link and she was able to sign up right away. And she actually I send her the link on Saturday and she got an appointment yesterday. So I know you know, with all the vehicles that were there yesterday it was boom, boom boom. They have it's well. Well machine down there. They did a great job. You said 40 minutes was at 40 minutes from your home and back. Where was it? 40 minutes. Once you got to Petco I left here, probably about 6 45 and I was home by like 7 40. All you know, In a nutshell, from leaving here, getting the vaccine and coming home. That's pretty quick. Is your reading in the compute Their exactly I know some of the appointments might be a little more congested during the daytime Only because you have downtown traffic and people that are still working down there. It might be a little more complex. That's why I chose first thing in the morning. Because it's seen more streamlined and then weekends were they had all kinds of appointments on the weekend, so I think it's easier to do because there's less traffic downtown as well. So you he would give it probably in a or B plus. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I would have given a name. They did a great job, You know, no complaints. Well, that's good, Good, good that you're able to do that through UCSD. Uh, where we hear it? We're hearing as of as of last week that sharp hospitals were not given access to the vaccine. So at least so as of this weekend, if you are at least able Tonto to sign up Yeah. Yeah, you were and then also to I heard bonds. Pharmacies are starting the vaccines and you can sign up. I think I've gone and then my doctor told me today that script she's going to be in his eyes immunizing for Script Hospital this week for the 65 older. And she said the patients had to go on increasing account with scripts. I would imagine if any of your listeners out there are in the script organization for their health care, and they're over 65. They should be able to schedule an appointment on their Web site somewhere. She didn't give me the direct link, but she just said that Patients that she's going to be injecting are the 65 plus. What? That that's good. That's good. That's good, firsthand knowledge. I'm glad to see that at least for one person. It zee going well Appreciate you calling in 806 100 Kogo 806 105 646 at crawled bio. They're supposed to do 15,000 day. It is incredibly frustrating. Don't tell me that we're not able to open up. Vaccination program on a weekend or on holiday. All right, this is wartime. Get it done coming up more your calls, Plus that batch of bad Well, not bad. "Gonna go switch gears. We got to talk about some of the market activity that we're already seeing this new year, including once again, an active market to take companies public. Amazing. Just a couple weeks in right, Tim the 2021 I po market, often runny. We cut up With Bloomberg News deals. Reporter crystals see to hear about the activity. We we really are saying the yet with very, very sizable on high profile IPO's just this week, we have seen at least six companies when public in New York on that includes Petco, and that includes a firm posh Mar. A lot of them are consumer facing companies. We have seen a bunch of technology companies went public. Laid in the quarter. But let it be consumer attack. 2021 is going to be a year of another record year, potentially for IPO's. We already have seen, you know, certain companies come out and say that they have either confidentially found or engaging advisors on listings, so not only that we are potentially going to Seymour directly saying given there now. Able to raise cos I would raise a proceeds from from these transactions. So all in all, it's gonna be a big year for E. C. M. For capital markets on bit's The best is one of the best start in the year. That was seen s Oh, yeah. Petco and Theodore options really help them in terms of growth, And it's not just a short term, um, actual term boost in revenue or in business that they're gonna see. People who adopt during the pandemic are going to have the pet for the next decade or so, And that really helped him and it's the same train that they see in the suburbs and in cities. Um so in terms of extension, um millennials, getting pets and covert definitely have been a driver. Echo a name that's going public for a second time and with a great ticker. We're talking about Petco Health and Wellness, which follows the pop prints of chewy, which went public last year and bark expected This year via SPAC. Let's not forget that Julie was a cover story at Bloomberg Business Week. I mean, it's all about everybody's pets. I do want to say, though, that the owner of the animal supply chain store Petco Man, they raised 864 million in that I po. Yeah, a lot right, and it returned the retailer to the public market 15 years after it was taken private. The company, which is changing its name to Petco Health and wellness Company, in conjunction with the listing sold 48 million shares for $18 each No. After the I P. A Petco will continue to be controlled by its current owners that includes CVC Capital Partners and Canada Pension Plan Investment board. They acquired Petco for 4.6 billion from TPG and Letter Green and 2016. A decade after those two firms took Peco private. It's one of those Harvard Business School's case, but it is I got to say yes, absolutely is. It also speaks to the cycle of this stuff, right public private, private public right, which we see a lot and in the process. Everybody's making a lot of money along the way we could. Up with Petco CEO Ron Coughlin and of that ticker, by the way, Let's get back to that. It's w 00 F wolf. Let me start with what hasn't changed. That hasn't changed is the mission of the company to really improve the lives of pets? Pet parent has always been in the hearts. Of the folks who work at Petco. But what's changed is we really retooled the business. Instead of being a big bag of dog food in a cart type company. We really become a complete partner for the health and wellness of a pet parrot, and we're really the only ones that can do that. Because we're the only ones who have a veterinary hospitals. Training, grooming that they online and the mass players don't have we have the highest and food with on Lee, retailers said. We're getting rid of artificial ingredients getting rid of shock collars. And then we have strong e commerce and our stores, which are now called pet care centers that Maura um or are working together. So here's an amazing fact for you 80% or e commerce orders are getting fulfilled. Who are pet care centers, which just gives us faster to the customer and lower costs versus competition, Right? You don't have to have these huge what massive distribution centers. We call that right? We call these micro distribution centers. Yes, and it really gives us a competitive edge. We talked about it as forward deployed inventory. Ron, I gotta say, I love dogs got my dog scout. She's quite the spoiled little critter. But what's interesting is that I've talked with the CEO of two. We follow this sector because it has really exploded. We have definitely seen it take off. Where's the most growth? Is it the healthcare side of it and the pet care centers? Is that it? Is it merchandise? What is it? So you're seeing explosive growth and services. So that's where we're putting a lot of effort. We're building out the fastest. That network build out in history really focused on The affordable vet care. 70% of pests don't get the care they need because of affordability. So we're rolling out 70 that hospitals a year, so that's a big growth area. And the other growth area is around digital. And that's where you know we were growing 20 to 30% before Cove it and we're growing 90% last quarter in our digital offering, So you're seeing that competitive it Competitive advantage Come through. Listen, we know the pandemic. I'm sure you've asked been asked this question A million times have forgive me. The pandemic led to people Adopting a lot of pets I know is I walked my dog over the last year. The streets were kind of littered with you could see the various, you know, pet retailer's e tailers boxes. Everybody was buying things for their pets argue at all concerned that as we all eventually get back to work that maybe that focus on our pets changes. Yeah, So, So first we have 3.3 million new pets in America today. Based upon what happened in covert and people needing a little more joy in their lives and those adoptions, and those need to be said they need to be groomed. They need to be trained and they're going to be vaccinated so that provide the lift the entire category in terms of change of behavior. The good news is more and more companies and plays or talking about working from home, so that should be good and more more employers are becoming dog friendly, so we don't anticipate and his history says There's not a lot of, you know returns if you will with live pets, so and if if you know where we actively try Tol, make sure that pets are put in homes. Peco Foundation Save 401,000 lives a year from euthanasia, and we're dedicated, trying eliminate euthanasia, so We're gonna be a catalyst for making sure that nothing bad happens. Excited, responsible pet ownership. That's the thing that I think you know, everybody needs to know about because that is going to help you in your cause there. Hey, brick and mortar. How important is that? Like I do you guys think about That you need to have to some extent, some saturation almost like a Starbucks where people if they're moving around, they need something for the pets that they see Pepco's everywhere. How important is that to the business story for you guys? You know, we're comfortable with our footprint will. What I will tell you is our brick and mortar pet care centers are absolutely sources of competitive vantage. You think about it right? They are the salons for pets. They're the hospital for pets and even the schools for peds s O R services make you know we get much more utilization than your traditional retailer..

I ran for president because that's how the economy was not working for everyday Americans. Let's crap in I mean, we had unemployment rates for just about everybody. Every minority every, you know. Lower than any time in history. So what kind of nonsense is that? No. He's the one who wanted to give basic income universal income 1000 bucks a month to everybody in America. He want to carry that same thing in the New York City. So let me get this right. They give you $12,000, right? The wealthy are moving out of New York City at alarming rate. I didn't wanna pay the extra taxes now that the governor and the mayor are trying to put on Yang will continue that. Only that, but it's come up with $12,000 a month a year rather for every person in the city. So what's gonna happen is always well, people moving out. All the poor people are moving in. Except problem is Rates are going to plummet in New York City for ransom purchases. Because, you know, wait a minute. Give me $12,000 a year. But you want me to pay 3000 month for a one bedroom apartment and no, I'm not Do I can't do that. What's gonna happen in real estate in New York City? "19 regime that's very similar to Gavin Newsom. On, Remember? Don't forget, uh, Andrew Cuomo, you know, really screwed up with the nursing homes in New York, forcing covert patients to be housed there. For capacity reasons, and it led to a lot of old folks dying in those homes. Um Cuomo, who has used draconian orders and, you know very, uh, heavy handed regulations in his state. Lock everything down. Cuomo is getting his rear end handed one just like Gavin Newsom is having his rear end and into him. And in his state of the state address yesterday, Cuomo said, quote ready for this. You ready? This is Andrew Cuomo, New York governor. Quote. We simply cannot stay closed until the vaccine hits critical mass. The cost is too high. We must reopen the economy. But we must do it smartly and safely. Holy cow knocked me over with a feather. This is Andrew Cuomo saying exactly what those of us in the reopened community have been saying. Now don't hold your breath. Just because he's paying lip service to the fact that his approaches failed doesn't mean that he's going to Reversed himself and come up with a better approach. No, that's not gonna happen. But now he is saying exactly what we're saying. We cannot wait until her herd immunity. We gotta reopen the economy have to do it in a balanced way in a strategic way now. Democrats like Gavin Newsom and Nathan Fletcher to Gloria, You all want to go criticize your buddy Andrew Cuomo in New York. Of course not. He's a Democrat. Can't say anything bad about a Democrat cannot now we're not gonna go after our own. But you call people like me and Jim Desmond County supervisors. It's been fighting for reopening. You call us terrorists and we've got blood on our hands. No. We just are pointing out your failures and saying there's a better way to do it. And we've been right consistently have been right about the data, the science etcetera. Here is Andrew Cuomo. Supporting The notion that the lockdowns Have not worked. It also hasn't worked is Thedetroitbureau shin of the vaccine. They started out with 25 million doses on Lee 35% of those doses have been given out so far. 65% of the doses are sitting on the shelves. And remember the covert vaccine has a shelf life. 30 days has to be kept under very stringent conditions, Temperature really low. It could go bad. And we are seeing a lot of health care workers decline the vaccine. But not because it's bad. I just think that they've decided for their own reasons to decline. The vaccine. Police officers in L. A county 40% of them said they weren't going toe sign up at this time for the vaccine, and they're at the front lines. Okay. They deal with people with covert all the time they need the vaccine. Is a priority first responder. And so The government which start out saying We're gonna give it to people based on race, and if you cut in line we're going to prosecute. You were going to go after you and your little dog too. Now that they haven't been able to get people to take the vaccine. Now they're scrambling. It has now been a month since California and San Diego have had their vaccines delivered. And now and now on Lee this week, are we seeing them scrambled? Why did you guys not have this set up ahead of time? Because you actually thought government is the power. People will only show up when we tell them to show up. It will be so overwhelming people will want the vaccine and they will have to comply with when we tell them to show up. No. Go where the market is. They're not going to be universal, um, compliance and acceptance of the vaccine. So let's for the time being vaccinated as many people as quickly as possible. Yes. Give priority to first responders and healthcare workers Give priority that those that are older, but go ahead and open up. As you know, you know, on call line. You know, show up, and as soon as we get all the priority people taking care of will take some of you people in the line. We have technology today, right so we can schedule people to show up just with a simple app. But most people don't know what is it my time, and I've talked to people in the health care industry there. They're completely confused. As to how when? Where, Why? How? How and where and when to get the vaccine. Finally They set up. I think at Petco Park wasn't at Petco Park. I think it was at Petco Park. The vaccine station Petco tailgate lot at Petco Park this week. Vaccination hub. So at least now we know one place to go. It's open 7 a.m. to 7 P.m.. They did 2500 shots on their first day of operation on Monday. Yesterday. They need to do far more than that, 2500. Is a drop in the bucket compared to what we need to be able to do so 2500 and one day times 30 days. 75,000 for, um A a full month. We have 3.5 million people divided by 75,000. And that's gonna take 46 months is a long time to get San Diego County done So again, it's a drop in the bucket. That should have been open a month ago. That should have been ready to go a month ago. But guess what? The Democrats were surprised. People don't want to take the vaccine. People aren't listening to us. We told them to take the vaccine and are not listening to us. What do we do with their although that vaccines are going bad? Well, because you told people not to show up. A lot of people didn't show up. You told people they cut in line, and they don't even know what the damn line is because you haven't been very clear about that either..

Interview With Carla Hassan
"Welcome Carla to the CMO podcast and congratulations the new city CMO. So happy to have you on his, you're just promote it and you were promoted about the time city named its first woman CEO. Jane Fraser did you to celebrate in any interesting or unusual way during Cova? We didn't well, we we We did celebrate over over a phone call. I am a huge fan of Jane's ever since I met her a couple of years ago. I just and I'm so thrilled for her I really really enthralled for her and I'm I'm honored to be working for her and alongside her and. And Look I think. This is just one of those times when you just really proud to to work at the company that you work at bright because the the the. The fact that we are putting our values to action by you know by by appointing Jane the CEO of the company is just such a huge huge nod to the wonderful leader that she is the greatest compliments that she's had and then also values we have as a company around diversity inclusion. I couldn't be more thrilled. I. Couldn't be more thrilled. We're going to get into that later but did you do any celebration with your family or friends? Yeah. Well, you know it's funny I actually. Back to your first question about whether I celebrated with Jane. So my announcement came out a believe it was on publicly on Wednesday and then hers was on Thursday and I wanted to email her and say, you couldn't give me twenty four hours to like celebrating. I. I thought that would be the right thing to do. But anyway she would have she would have gotten a kick out of if I'd actually said that you know we did celebrate at home we have a thirteen year old and I think for her it was a moment of pride in fact, I'll tell you. The week before that, we were driving in the car I was with her and I? And I saw the note that came out the president that came out to to the company about promotion and I. I kind of choked up a little bit and I handed her the phone. She said, Mama. What's wrong and I said nothing's wrong north and sometimes you know your life you know things happen in your life in a good way after you've worked so hard and I had her the phone and she read it and she said she just kind of looked at me. She said, you know Mama I am really proud of you and that was. Honestly, enough celebration for I mean. Obviously, we've got another marketer in the household who was also a very, very happy for me. So we just kind of had it real a quiet. Celebration at home. Sweet story what what? What was it about the letter that moved you? You know I think we all worked so hard right I mean we all just worked so hard and some days we we slug it out and leadership is hard and marketing his hard and. You know I've. I've had ups and downs my career I mean I started off at Kellogg's it at Pepsico and I took very traditional consumer packaged goods, marketing routes, and I kinda knew really where I was headed and then I decided to the one time in my life that I actually made a took a risk in my career. It was such a public failure right and so for me it. Took a long time for me to get when you went to toys R. us. That's when I went to are. Yeah and you know I would not change it for the world. It has opened up so many doors for me and it has taught me so much about the kind of leader I want to be the kind of team I want to be around and the kind of. The way I want to I, want to sort of lead teams in and Dr Visions but. Say was hard right I. Mean it was hard and you know in in the at the risk of being vulnerable, that was not a not a not an easy time for me personally for my daughter to see that and for my my parents who live in Lebanon to see that you know for me it was it just it wasn't a fun moment in my life, and so I've worked really hard to kind of come back from that and so I think it wasn't necessarily the. The words, per se but it really was kind of the moment for me. That was just like all right. You know what a few years after that happened. I worked hard and you know and here I am and so I think that that's more what it was from than than than specific words. Yeah. We're in a very big role now internally externally but that decision of Toys R. US to me is one of the more interesting decisions you made in your life so I wanna come back to that. The podcast. So I've got a lot to say about that. Super before we get too much further into this, this podcast is a first. You're the second member of your family to be interviewed by me. We released their husband Tareq podcast in July. Of course is a CMO at PETCO and our viewers or listeners can hear this but you have a beautiful dog taking a nap behind you on this new. So it's a dog starts to make some noise just bring him in. No, forgive me if he does I, guess. So, did you listen to your husband's podcast? I did I thought he did a really nice job. You know it's funny Jim. I. Don't know if you well, you did you did have conversation about this. You know we tend not. We have in our entire career tended not to talk about. The fact that we're married and in fact, I would tell you that there are so many people in. That will will hear me you mentioned my husband's name not saying who he is and and will will say wait a minute what that Tareq is your husband hold on a second. So we been pretty deliberate about. You know not. Not, sort of mean public about it but I do you know we follow each other? We do. We do love to hear what each other stay and and so I thought that was actually a really thought. He did a really nice

Padres take two wins against Giants in doubleheader
"What an afternoon on. Sunday. For the padres they sweep a doubleheader from the giants and extend their winning streak to seven consecutive games. The padres will finish twenty twenty over five hundred for the first time. Since twenty ten s San, Diego moved to thirty one and seventeen with a couple of very impressive wins on Sunday afternoon six nothing in game one by my cleven jer three, one in game two behind some clutch hitting three relievers. Behind Garrett Richards and the padres absolutely rolling into their huge series this upcoming week against the La Dodgers. This is the wrap up show with John for and Jim. Russell. If you're not following us on social media, please do that at twitter at John Shaffer at Jim Russell. St. Over the next hour, we're gonNA hear from the manager Jay's Tingler we'll hear from my clovinger as well LS scores and we'll get you set for the massive. At PETCO Park against La the begins on Monday and six ten. But what a weekend Jim, we didn't know if the momentum would be halted as the padres didn't play Friday and Saturday, because of a false positive in the giants organization but the Padres pick up right where they were and they've won seven consecutive games. Yeah. A couple days off may have actually helped team to be honest with you and they got to sweep today. Kinda like. Easy I to me it did it to me. It felt like there's no doubt in my mind that not only the Padres, the better team, but they're going to win these games. They're gonNA to find a way to win in the second game there, and then the first game I tweet this out after the third inning, I'll like this feels like clovinger I'm just GonNa go seven complete this game type outing for him and which he did he went seven. Felt Kinda effortless almost when you look at the box score complete game seven strikeouts only one walk only giving up two hits like that's the Mike Levin show that this team traded for and who they hope they get in the postseason is a guy that's going to give you seven innings going to not allow any runs couple couple hits given up. strikeout seven plus only walk one it was it was his best as a padre so far and couldn't have come at a better time. And then game to like it was you know giant scored I there but to me I was like, all right. You know I felt that they were gonNA come back and win that game somehow, and it wasn't pretty will myers at a home run. But other than that the other ones they scored wasn't pretty how they did it but still they got the job done and their bullpen. John, this is a strength of the team. Now it's incredible because it's been nine days. So the first twenty, three games of the year, the padres bullpen was six point four, eight, the last twenty, three games coming into today two, point, seven five and the bullpen today two and two third innings of one hit no run baseball Tim Hills now three. Now he was the winning pitcher in game two drew pomeranz not allowed to run JIM this year and fifteen scoreless innings and Trevor Rosenthal was able to work around two out error committed by Fernando Totti's junior. To Work School. seventh-inning for his tenth save and third with the chargers. If there's one thing we saw over the course of these two games and maybe over the seven game winning streak is that Fernando Totti's junior is a human. You know he wasn't GonNa hit three fifty all year. He wasn't GonNa hit thirty five home runs and sixty games you know he For the first time, maybe as a professional at the big league level actually slumping, he's one for fifteen. Now, in his last five games, the Patriots won all of those games. So that's the good news.
