Is This The NFL's #MeToo Moment?
"Can you give us a sense of the build up to the publication of this report? So there's been a lot of drama swirling around the Washington football team, but suddenly started to get all of these dots that you could start connecting. There's a lot going on within the front office. That really doesn't add up firings in retirement in July in the NFL. Rarely happening tonight. We're! And we're too high level personnel executives who were abruptly fired and Alex Santos in Richard. Man were fire. No reason was given as to why they were fired. Then today, longtime radio announcer for the Washington football club Larry Michael announcing his retirement, he spent sixteen years with the team, the man who had been there the radio voice, he abruptly retired without any sort of official comment from the team, and he started to hear this buzz rumors flying about a potential bombshell report on Washington's football team and owner Dan Snyder. This is absolutely taken over social media with speculation running rampant then by Thursday afternoon. The Washington Post dropped the story. There fifteen women who went on the record, alleging widespread sexual harassment within the Washington football organization that spanned just about Daniel Snyder entire time that he is owned the team, so these were women who works across the organization in marketing and ticketing and finance in there were also two female reporters, one who formerly covered the team for the Washington Times and Rianne and Walker our colleague from the athletic, who also went on the record to accuse one of the men who had? had been fired of sexual harassment as well. It was the sprawling account as you mentioned fifteen women accusing sexual harassment in Washington. Can you summarize some of those accusations? Yes, so it was a lot of the very classic cases of sexual harassment things from making lewd comments about women's bodies about their breasts about their rear ends about the the clothes they were wearing to very overt sexual comments, propositioning requests to go on dates, just a lot of overall inappropriate workplace behavior. Behavior from superiors directed at female employees, and it did not seem to be a secret. Some of these women who went on the record with the Washington, post talked about how the other people who worked in the organization knew about it. They talked about it amongst themselves. There were places in the building where women were advised not to go. Specifically, there was a stairwell that had basically transparent stairs and women were told. Do not go there because there were men who. Who would stand underneath that and look up? Their female colleagues skirts all of these things that are blatantly inappropriate and wrong and workplace environment, but had been persisting for more than a decade, all fifteen of these women went on the record, but one of the few who allowed her name to be published is a woman named Emily applegate. What was her experience like working inside the Washington Organization? It was miserable it really most people know times a comment on my appearin. Screaming at you for something that you, it's not your fault. And then somebody makes a comment to you about what you're wearing and it just snowballs from there. she cried at work regularly, she felt belittled, imagined us being called stupid on a daily basis, and then also almost in the same breath being hit on for your appearance. It's a miserable work experience. Experience to the point where she no longer wanted to work there anymore and no longer even wanted to work in sports, and we should note that Emily applegate's former boss Mitch Gershman who was the team CEO at the time both denied and said he didn't recall conversations referenced by Applegate, telling The Washington Post quote I can't comment on something I can't remember. But Lindsay what actions has the team taken in response to these accusations from emily applegate, and the many other women, well many of the men who were accused in this story, all ready been fired, and we're kind of fired in the process of the Washington Post. Reporting this story, the team can say that has taken measures to address this because some of these accusations date back to the early to mid two thousands, so some of these people no longer actually work with the team and then some of the people. People that had new allegations have immediately been fired or left the team. They've started their own investigation. They hired an attorney Beth Wilkinson. The name might sound familiar over the last several years. Wilkinson took part in notable cases involving Hillary. Clinton Brett Cavenaugh and Michael Flynn and she told us we can confirm that our firm was retained by the team to do an independent review of the team's culture policies and allegations of workplace, misconduct and Daniel. Snyder and his wife sent an internal email to everybody who works organization to. To apologize for the culture, the statement saying in part, the behavior described in yesterday's Washington Post. Article has no place in our franchise or society. The story has strengthened my commitment to setting a new culture and standard for our team, but without specific apologies to any of the employees into these women, and there have also not been any public apologies to the two female reporters who were not team employees. The team has not publicly addressed them as well

"You buy books whether it's bookstore, whether it's Amazon Barnes and noble, you go there. It's it's it's out today. And and Zach this is the first book you ever wrote. And hopefully, not the last. I'll see how sales go, right? It's ought to work though. Isn't it? Yes. And and you know, it's it's funny. When I when I always thought about writing books, I am I imagine it would be like like a Friday night life where you take a year reporting something and because of of the Super Bowl it obviously had to be done much quicker. So big undertaking this off season, but I had six years of notes from covering the team, and I'm real proud of the product. All right, Zach let let's talk about a couple of things this book that I didn't know one is Jeff Lurie the owner of the team bedside has a checklist. Yeah. So in his top drawer next to his bed. He keeps a checklist for for basically what he thinks that he strong successful franchisees to half. And it started off with with with four things and it was a first class facility. Okay. Both practice and stadium. And that happened early on in his tenure a a strong head coach and coaching staff a creative personnel executive and a franchise quarterback. And he kind of felt throughout the first two decades of his franchise. He had a few of those things I different times, but they never really came together. And interestingly after shit Kelly was fired. He added a fifth into that list and that collaboration and chemistry in both locker room. And you're building at large and and that was a big emphasis during the past two years. And he thinks that was. Part of what contributed to the Super Bowl run diet is fascinating. So Kelly who is number two on the list, a strong head coach so screwed it up that he added a fifth thing. To neutralize the second thing. Right. Because really that was the thing about Kelly. Nobody ever said, he didn't know football. He didn't know people. And and then the other part of of chips ten years they didn't have that franchise quarterback. And that's really win when they fired shit. Everything was was about going after Carson Wentz. And I have a whole chapter in the book detailing their pursuit of Carson Wentz. From the time really that they went to the senior bowl in mobile Alabama to the time. Carson Wentz arrived in in Philadelphia. After getting picked why I wanna I wanna talk a bit about that. Because I started the show saying the best hope the birds have this year is that winces just gonna get better and better one ten passer rating so far this year Zach the day, no right away. That were they sure he was going to be great. They were very intrigued from the beginning. Okay. So so down in mobile, Alabama. Not just in terms of the way, he was playing quite the the the personality that they started to see in the interview process Jeffrey Loria was at the senior bowl there. Howie Roseman told Jeffrey Loria personality reminded him Brent sell who obviously the Mary popular eagle. But then as as the process went on and in particular when they took that trip to Fargo to meet with Carson Wentz, they were blown away. And and they had over eighty pages of notes at the end. Detailing everything from physical health, psychological, really going deep on on why they wanted Carson. And then the the big complication there was they realized early on in the process they had to get up to the number one or number two pick. Maybe at the beginning of the process. They didn't think that, but they certainly realized that as as as it went on to the trade to number eight with the dolphins. And then the trade up to number two with Cleveland, those were critical you find it odd at all the timing that your books coming out one day after you Jackson got fired since he was the quarterback guru who did not think that highly of went. And now, he's on employed. That's kind of ironic, and I have it in the book to that that Cleveland didn't think he was going to be a franchise quarterback. Didn't think he was going to be a top twenty quarterback in the NFL. And and like you said if the eagles make a run this year, their their hope is number eleven and it's not necessarily getting one of those top two seeds. You saw when Aaron Rodgers did when the Packers won the SuperBowl came in here to Philly and just got hot during the playoffs and Wentz has that capability. Exac one of the things you have in this book. Is you go to a lot of the places? We're these ego players grow up. Right. Can you give me the best background story? You learn when you went to the hometown of Fletcher Cox or somebody like that and found out. Wow. This is this is where it started for these guys. What was that? Like, yeah. So that was interesting. I I went there in two thousand twelve Fletcher Cox is just rookie year together city, Mississippi, which is considerably different than Philadelphia crawfish at his favorite restaurant. I was in. In his in his childhood home. And I was driving with with his high school coach and his high school coach pointed to a corner by bridge in in a in a questionable part of town and said that there's a guy there named Tutu. And to two was was more talented, whereas talented as Fletcher was something like six seven three hundred pounds. But just didn't have his head on straight in Yaser city. And the thing that everyone I talked to in Yaser shitty kept mentioning about Fletcher Cox was how determined she was to get out of there. And they used examples of of just just different people from the town who never made it out, and what made Fletcher different and is not the most vocal guy. He's he's getting better at that. But where everyone said from his guidance counselor to coach is that he just always listen, you know, he he listened to much more than they talk. And even as a captain with the eagles now that kind of lecherous personalities..

"The job done right let's get what you need getting ozone autozone if it summertime it feels like we must be talking about a legal issue connected alabama football with the preface and arrest is not a conviction and if we're talking about a connection between college football to the nfl think about dak prescott getting arrested on suspicion of dui charges in the runup to the draft that was one of the primary factors wall the body of work was being evaluated that led to him falling to the fourth round and dallas got a tremendous value people don't mention enough dak was acquitted of that charge now i understand player personnel executive saying how can you put your self in that situation on there were a couple incidents on campus in florida but legally he was in the clear still perception is reality but let me give you the update from alabama defensive lineman to sean hand arrested charged with driving under the influence early saturday morning let me be the old guy now nothing good apposite two o'clock in the morning go home take the party with you yes young people sometimes make challenging decisions so the question is how to sieben react when we get more legal information because you know what's on the horizon it's going to sound like pure drivel and high for me but or deeply depending on where the pre season rankings land bama florida state going be the most anticipated off game of the last what quartercentury can be a titanic tilt and that's why couch football's great because we're seeing more of these matchups early now in the era of the college football playoff my she was better yes call me a homer for west coast football as a pac 12 alum pac 12 does it right because you've got the nine conference games as you think about how things are slotted between say the sec in the big ten we don't have uniformity across the power five so we was encouraging to see unless he just felt like staking out.
