"The American family farmer program. I'm Doug Stephan. We're introducing you the shayna Amsterdam along with her husband is set up a wonderful bakery. Call talking bridge. He's given us her history. We're talking a little bit about the things that are important when you are doing this sort of thing is baking so is your husband of farmer, you're on your at farmers markets. I know that we're talking about the west coast to east coast. You're located actually where we're in Pennsylvania where Sherman deal. Perry County whereabout. Northwest of Harrisburg. That's great farm. Yeah. That's a great area. But anyway, you learned you learned how to do this on the west coast and it brought it back here. So tell us about your farm, and then the introduction of the bread and the other baked goods to your guess, assuming 'cause you have a commercial kitchen on the farm that you're selling other things you have sort of a farm store. Do you? Not right now. Let's look me on that. So basically. Yeah, we together when I met him. He was working on a meat farm. Pastured pigs and poultry together, we kind of want it to learn to figure out how we can incorporate to our passions of a baking get I wanna ask you a personal question. 'cause this comes up all the time in my circle of friends. How do you meet other? How'd you meet people of like interest? Like in your case, your you. And your husband are interested in the same sort of thing. And then they'll say, well, you know, they're all of these dating sites that are for people of like interests. And so what I hear people tell the story like you. I wonder whether it's working together. How did you Heidi? Because this is a very specialized area. It's not like people like this on every corner. Well, it I just say that's all you're locked it. Really? I didn't I didn't even think that I would ever meet meet my partner, but he actually was working out of farm a mile down the road from me and. The people that worked with him. There are the girl living with me who was dating the guy another. For dinner one night. Okay. Well, together, and it. Yeah. A good journey. All right. So what else? When we bring ourselves to your farm, the farm Surrey, one of the reasons there are several reasons I want to tell stories like this the fact that younger people are getting into farming or staying into farming. When we hear the stories, you may have heard me talking before you went on the air about the problems, the older, farms and farmers are having just paying their bills. So it doesn't look at tractive to a lot of younger people. Why did it look attractive to you? It's it's refreshing. It's good to have you bring the new blood in. But how did you figure you could make a goal of it? Oh, I don't know. I think I I've always been driven always going to be. If you love what you do then you figure out a way to do it. And it's you know. Has always been important to us. Arrest? Needed to be creative and figure out how it could be excessive warm, and that doesn't mean death growing wheat and telling the berries, you have to hurt until value added product. Dacre? So we figured out how to make it all work together. Yeah. So what else do you have on? What else? Do you have on your farm? You got forty five acres in this county in Pennsylvania. What else do you have on the farm? My husband's in charge of raising the meat chicken. Pastor chickens. Raise laying hens for eggs, and we weren't doing pigs until this last year, we took a break from them because we had a baby. So. The goal is that we are the chickens through pastures, and then fertilizes the land. And then in the fall we plant, and then we harvest the wheat put a cover crop on through the chicken. We're trying to make it a full circle full circle. Right. Hold on a second. Spends more time making that circle shayna Amsterdam on with Doug Stephan on the American family farmer. United States navy veteran Jack holder talks about the attack on Pearl Harbor, and what was going through his mind as he laid in a ditch avoiding Japanese aircraft. I'm not sure how our in the ditch. But a shut their been.

"Miraculously investigators were able to find an intact piece of the Ryder truck that had the vehicle identification number on it, and axle of the truck had been blown to blocks away from the explosion investigators traced vehicle identification. Number two, the writer facility where McVeigh had rented the truck when the owner of the rental agency was able to help the FBI make a sketch of McVay. And at this point on force -ment realized that they were not dealing with a Middle Eastern suspect. McVeigh had used his real name to sign for the rental truck and at the motel in Kansas, which the FBI quickly traced him to. He'd also signed his own name on the charge sheet at the Perry police station where he was taken after his arrest unlawful possession of a firearm. A misdemeanor under normal circumstances. McVeigh would have had a court date said, and then be. Released. However, on that particular day, the judge's sign to McVeigh's case was booked with other cases. McVeigh was conveniently held in jail for two days until April twenty. First nineteen ninety-five on the day. McVeigh was scheduled to be released from the Perry County jail federal agents track down his name from his misdemeanor charges arrived at the jail and took him into custody. This was a very big break for law enforcement who knows how long the manhunt would have gone on for if McVeigh had been allowed to just leave, knowing what we know about McVeigh it would only have led to more death. McVeigh's driver's license was confiscated when he was arrested. His listed address was the ranch of Terry Nichols brother. James. Remember on the day of the bombing Nichols was safe at home with his family in Kansas. It's unclear why he didn't take steps to avoid arrest when he heard of the bombing, regardless of his re. Reasons. Nichols learned. He was being sought for arrest in turn himself in on April twenty. I finally, Michael Fortier and his wife Lori who knew about McVeigh's plans but didn't participate. A report him were both arrested as accomplices at this point, law enforcement had in custody. Everyone that would ever be confirmed to have had a part in the Oklahoma City bombing. McVeigh's trial began on April twenty fourth nineteen ninety seven just over two years after the bombing, the task force that investigated. The bombing for the trial was the largest US criminal task force since the assassination of president Kennedy jed Richard Matsch believed that McVeigh would not have an impartial jury if he was tried in Oklahoma City. So he ordered the case to be tried in Denver, Colorado because it was a federal prosecution. The judge had the ability to try McVeigh anywhere. In the country for his trial McVay wanted his defense team to argue that the bombing was an act of self defense from an oppressive government. They didn't go with that defense regardless of what McVeigh believed to be true. There was no way that any lawyer was gonna prove that the government was actively out to kill McVeigh, which is what they would have had to do to win with that argument. McVeigh wouldn't deny that he had been the man behind the bombing, but he did continually express that his actions were that of a soldier, not a murderer. Clearly that argument didn't work in a rational courtroom after over twenty hours of deliberation, the jury reached its verdict on June second nineteen ninety seven Timothy. James McVeigh was found guilty on eleven counts, eight for murder and three for the use of and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. He was sentenced to death, although McVeigh. Killed when hundred and sixty eight people. He was only tried for eight murders. This was because his federal prosecution only charged him with the deaths of the eight federal agents who had died in the bombing. It would have been up to the state of Oklahoma to hold a second criminal trial for the one hundred sixty additional deaths given that McVeigh was found guilty of all counts and sentenced to death. The additional trial was deemed unnecessary alongside McVeigh. Terry Nichols was sentenced to one hundred and sixty one consecutive life sentences with no possibility of parole. Michael Fortier agreed to testify against Nichols and McVeigh in exchange for immunity for his wife. He was sentenced to twelve years, but was released ten years later and placed in the witness protection program. Is it odd and a man who is indirectly responsible for the deaths of one hundred sixty eight people receive government assist. Distance and starting a new life. Perhaps he feared retaliation from the victims families or from fringe extremist groups that supported McVeigh's worldview on June eleventh, two thousand one less than ten.
