A Look at Jennie Livingston's 1990 documentary Paris is Burning

"Hello and welcome to Queer as fiction we talk about Queer historical media I'm Jason and I may lie and today we're talking about Jenny. Livingston's nineteen ninety. Documentary. Paris's Bang. Before we start, we have a few called him warnings to this episode. This episode contains mentions of Racism Transphobia Homophobia the AIDS epidemic murder and family rejection. It also contains the use of outdated language surefooted by Queer people on people, call it in courts. If any of that sounds like something, you don't want to listen to please feel free to check out one of. Our other episodes. So I wanted to stop this episode by explaining what is Paris's banning because I feel like a lot of listeners probably a pretty good understanding of this documentary. Some very young listeners may not have seen it. I said Hanson had you seen it before we researched this ups lot no but I had a pirated version of a hard drive for decades. I love with things and have adhd. reasonable. So I was aware of it but I hadn't actually seen it. Yeah. I think I heard the name but didn't know what it was. So Paris is burning is a documentary about the bowl culture scene of New York in the nineteen eighties prominently featuring the African American and Latin American members of that community many among gay and or trans. It documents how they lives intersect with the Bulls the form, the Bulls tight and contains several interviews, participants, explaining concepts, such shade, realness reading, and legendary woods that may be familiar to a modern audience given how by propagated in popular drag culture. Yeah on TIKTOK. The documentary features no narration and very little dialogue from the interview wide lesbian filmmaker. Jenny. Livingston prominent members of several houses in the scene featured including pepple of Asia during Corey Angie Extravaganza and Willi? Ninja. I'll make a nerd here on pronounce while several of the performance featured in Paris boning. Ambiguously Trans Women and so I'm GonNa to share pronounced where I don't have specific evidence I. Do want to note that pepple of Asia describes himself in the documentary is not being woman not understanding the experience of womanhood and being on In a sex change however, her two thousand and three obituary in the new. York. Times describes her as preferring in pronounce ongoing with that as the more recent source compared to this documentary which was filmed in the eighties. So having talked about what Paris has been is I want to I going to kind of how was made so as described by Academic Lucas, Hildebrand in his twenty thirteen book quit film classics Piracy's Boning, which was a major source when I was researching this episode Livingston was taking a film production class at NEOCON. INVESTI windshield observed three young men voguish in Washington. Square Park after asking what they were doing she was invited to an upcoming bowl and soon thereafter began documenting the scene via black and white photographs and audio interviews which were kind of the mediums in which she worked at the time. She was really documentary filmmaker. This was her first data and she since gone on to make several more films which obviously less notable. Because I don't know what they. Yeah. That's pretty wild. Are they on like queer things. Yeah I, believe her I think there's like Queer Antenna. Seems to many of her films. So yeah, it was only the light of that. She began filming the balls and coming up with the idea of turning these into a documentary. Film took seven years to make in no small pod Judah. The struggles Livingston had funding its production. She initially intended it to be appealing observational documentary just kind of following the lives of the Queen's involved in the same but lacked the funding to shoot the endless hours of footage that would be required for such a production. I'm not really an expert on how documentary films of made. Films something like seventy or eighty hours of footage as it is. So like, wow, that must have been. Lot of what is required for something without the kind of caught away stained. Interesting to think about funding a project like this in like post the iphone world. Because there's like a very like obviously a useless modern. Just, film it like whistle the money going yeah. It's like it's interesting. She talks about the various ways in which the film was funded was funded by a bunch of different organization. Thirteen. Different organizations contributed funding including the baby say. And she stalked interviews about how? It's the late eighties you conscious show someone from the BBC your footage you have to fly someone out from. England oh. Wow. Yeah. My Gosh and show them a physical film real. So is that indicative of a certain level of like promises project was seen to have if she was able to show it to someone like that or did this happen quite routinely it was just logistically difficult Y-. Oh. Yeah. So instead of a purely observational documentary, the earlier interviews that she'd recorded were bought back and more interviews were conducted. Most notably interviews conducted in one thousand, nine, hundred, nine broad sense of narrative to the film by depicting the commercial success of Willi Ninja, as well as the tragic murder of Vance Extravaganza young star in the bowl seen who features prominently throughout the Documentary Livingston has self describes the film making process as followers. Suddenly, the people I filmed worked with me in pop because I represented a chance to speak out to be in front of a camera to show off I, consider Paris burning collaboration on the deepest level, the people who. Are Articulate funny poised while the editor and I made coherent full that we saw the documentary was truly written by the bowl people themselves I use that quite because questions of narrative agency consent and understanding of the nature of the documentaries production became deeply controversial upon the film's release and will form a pot about lighter discussion. But before we get into that, I wanted to do a bit

"I know when I was able to improve my volleyball skills as I practice and played more over the years. It made me feel really good to make a goal to learn a skill and and then finally able to do it during a game like playing the ball as bounced off the net or doing an overhand sir. So keep practicing using what you're practicing piano spelling or reading soccer yoga writing poems multiplication tables or whatever you may be working on right now change and improvement or maybe just having to be patient with other people like like younger brothers or sisters may feel impossible but it might just take time if a bumpy. "This month today. Governor, Jay Inslee was randomly selected to appear on the first night, and not on the second night, which will include Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Come Charlie Harker spoke to Republic. Strategist, Randy Pepple and democratic strategist Kathy Allen. I think it was a lucky break for governor Jay, I think that having Elizabeth Warren on who has yet to be very vocal about anything to do with the environment is probably good for her to, and what do you think Randy? I think that James Lee lucked out on this job because what he really has the opportunity to do is go after beta Aurora for stealing his ideas on climate that will give him a confrontation moment that the moderators audience may respond well to, and he doesn't really have to compete with the top tier folks on this issue, or really beyond Warren, any of the top tier folks. Mean booker's Cory booker's star has been fading since he got into the race award stars been fading in the last month. And so. Inslee got gotta break on this. But Warren, did not because she's going to be expected to dominate the debate and given a debate format like this, that's almost impossible Kathy Randy touched on this, and maybe you can expand coming from the democratic side. Let's talk about strategy here. You've got a really Pierce through if you're one of these lower ranked, candidates, and we are talking about a confrontation moment. What would you recommend if you had a client there? What would you recommend? They do command that they go after Biden. I think that's the only game in town. Right now. I also think that even though the second night has a lot of interesting ideas on the table, it's gonna be too confusing with ten in most of the debate forms. Remember, even in terms of that we saw two thousand sixty oh my goodness. The problem is, is that when you have so many people with so many different ideas. The problem becomes one where you sit back and wonder wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. What do I remember about anyone, I think Biden, and I think that, frankly, it all of this. Kamala has a shot at it. I think that a lot of the others are going to sit there and literally have one minute of fame, and I don't think it's going to be the most memorable and Randy, your Republicans. I'm having you reach here, but you've managed to candidate who went up against Jay Inslee ended debate. What, what is something that Inslee does that strong in that type of format? What would you advise somebody opposing him to be where of I think that opposing Jay Inslee in a debate is trying to nail jello to a wall. He will not answer questions directly. So if you are opposing him and you wanna have that confrontation, I think you just keep pushing him on of questions. And once you get him out of talking specifically about climate. He gets into shallow water. Very quickly. The reality is, I don't know that any other candidate in that debate with Inslee is going to see him as to one they need to engage with Aurora. And the Ensley will have a fight over there climate plants, but beyond that, a works can wanna pivot to going after Warren because really he has to get through that progressive lane. If he's going to advance beyond beyond two thousand nineteen Randy, Pepple and Kathy Allen. Joining us the democratic presidential debates come June twenty six and twenty seven. I'm Charlie harder. Pat Bowlen, Denver Broncos' owner, has died at 75

"Some sad news from the NFL world that happened overnight, Pat bolan longtime owner of the Denver Broncos his past the seventy five. He bought the team way back in nineteen eighty four seven Super Bowl appearances. And only seven losing seasons. In thirty four years as the owner of the team three championships, thirteen division championships. Eighteen playoff appearances. He'll be inducted into the hall of fame in August. That was decided back in February. He's been battling Alzheimer's disease for years in two thousand fourteen he stepped away from the. Day to day management of the team, a three person trust has been running the team for the past five years, and eventually one of his children. Will take over. Brittany bolan who's in her late twenties, and who's coming back to work for the team, full-time soon. But the goal is to keep it in the family. But Pat bolan decided before he stepped away that he wants to be sure that the right person is running team. You have to put it in one person's hands for NFL purposes, there has to be one person who runs a team one person who controls the team day to day, one person who shows up at the meetings and cast votes on behalf of the team. And automatically if they just can't find any of the children. Who are suited to take over then, then the inferior the team could be sold. But I think the goal is Pat bowlen's goal was to keep. In Kirkland, where police say an older woman was making your way through the parking lot and hit the three year old. Boy, they say it appears she wasn't speeding nor was she drunk nor high at the time just that she says she heard something and felt something and then stop, but investigators aren't ready to say yet if it was an accident or the woman's fault. I asked Kirkman police Lieutenant rob Sologne where the boy's parents were parents were nearby. We don't know what circumstance that they were unloading or loading. There's other children there. There is a language barrier. So we're working with one of our officers. That speaks Portuguese Sloan says medics arrived and tried to save the boy, but then he was too badly hurt. "Because I'm the only candidate you make to feeding climate change for nations number one priority. We could do this. We have to local political strategist to to toss this around a little bit. I Republican Randy Pepple. Good morning, Randi. Good morning. What do you think? Does. Jay Inslee have a chance. Reading occur. The democrat wins the next election. The reality is among Democrats primary voters the police already in politico and gently polling zero percent when he was included. Adult couple percent among democratic voters. This point Donald Trump is more popular than democrat leaders democratic consultant, Kathy Allen is also with us this morning, Kathy. How do you view the Jay Inslee candidacy breath of fresh air, and no pun intended. I think that in taking a look at that. It's important when you're running a campaign in the field of the cast of thousands. Your message has got to be unique you have to have a solid base and more importantly, you gotta have somebody. Who's likable fact is is that this guy is among the most likeable and somebody who actually loves the challenge of what this is all about he relishes the fact that he's starting at zero percent. Are you kidding me? We've had some comments from some other consultants or observers who say they don't think the climate change is the top priority among democratic voters in that that this is not going to help Inslee. That's this much Kathy. What do you think about that? Well, that all depends if he's going after among other things young voters and. Yeah. A young voters under thirty five years of age. Those voters are very tuned into all things that are climate change. And the other part is that we can't forget this guy's a governor the stint he had is president of the democratic governors association has made him somebody who actually has a presence in terms of all of the other governors who literally have been taking a look at. "Seven sixteen. It's Friday morning March. I I've Gregg Hersholt MandA is off this morning. Frank Lenzi is at the editor's desk. Our top story is that governor Jay Inslee made it official this morning. Jay inslee. And I'm running for president because I'm the only candidate you make defeating climate change our nation's number one priority. We could do this. Join our movement. Czar moment that's from his announcement this morning, and we have to local political strategists to two toss this around a little bit. I Republican Randy Pepple. Good morning, Randi. Good morning. What do you think? This. Jay Inslee have a chance. Jane, reading vision and hopes democrat wins the next election. The reality is among Democrats. Primary voters the poll you've already in Athletico zero when he was included Donald Trump couple percent among democratic voters. This point Donald Trump is more popular than democrat. Democratic consultant Kathy Allen is also with us this morning, Kathy. How do you feel the Jay Inslee candidacy, I think it's a breath of fresh air, and no pun intended. I think that taking a look at that. It's important when you're running a campaign in the field of the cast of thousands. Your message has gotta be unique. You have to have a solid base and more importantly, you gotta have somebody. Who's likable fact is is that this guy is among the most likeable and somebody who actually loves the challenge of what this is all about he relishes the fact that he's starting at zero percent. Are you kidding me? We've had some comments this morning from some other consultants are observers who say they don't think the climate change is the top priority among democratic voters in that that this is not going to help Inslee. That's this much Kathy. What do you think about that? Well, that all depends. And if he's going after among other things young voters and yeah, young voters under thirty. Five years of age. Those voters are very tuned into all things that are climate change. And the other part is is that we can't forget this guy's a governor the stint he had is president of the democratic governors association has made him somebody who actually has a presence in terms of all of the other governors who literally have been taking a look at. Why is it? We're not getting crap from Washington DC. The fact is is that he does now highlight what it's like to be running at a governor at the same time. "We're going to be let down if he doesn't win a major where are you at tiger right now. The win it easily. I represented a fast. Guy that you know, that is what is off as he has to get back and do that again giving you know, and we're number comeback. This isn't the first woman with back this fused together. So I think that was a monstrous checkmark in his own eye to know. All right. Good enough against the best in the world and playing with Willie that day. And you know, he was he was better demonstrably better. And that that that arrays maybe the memory of having the lead on the back guide at Carter's and not not wanting. So I get what you're asking. And this is an and you know, this from watching the scored his horn to rent. I mean, you look at how many times particularly majors a guy has a league or the lifestyle. And he's not even a matter of melting. It's just hard to sneak to stay up on. And so, you know, you got so many, Dustin Johnson, Thomas and. An order on much less molinar, even beating the British last year. Where kept seems to always plays the majors. You just you gotta be so many people now who believe they can do because they have so the weight of expectation he's dealt with at his entire career. I'd say that this'll be the best shot. He he probably had simply because a gust of Pepple talk places where he's one. And that's where three of the four majors the open is it for Russia. Everybody knows anything about that. As far as major played played it there. So you got three of the four chances are he's already won. So does that give him expectation in his own mind? I think he already knows what it feels like through it. So I guess it's kind of a long meandering it. I just I think his expectations now are way different than there were in your just because he won an east lake against that field because two majors. He was right there in the mix. And he knows if our you know, I might get one kind of by default. So I I really believe that he can win another major. I don't think he can catch Jack this point winning another major in some ways almost being nothing. I said that would gain the way we count now one equal five anyway. If you wanted that one will be like, our whatever. Right now. It's kinda like Brady I say any any Super Bowl. He wins past the age of forty. She has too. I mean. Fuse back after all the garbage through admittedly, a lot of it's still. I mean, you know, aren't counting is gonna be is gonna be favorable him. All right. So I want to ask you some quick questions. Give me the I'm not gonna I'm gonna ask you dream force them in a second. So you have time to think about it. But give me because you're you know, your big time celebrity. I mean, you're Scott fan pal over the masters. I mean sports center at night, everything give me the best foursome you've ever played it. It's just buddies. I I'm sorry. This is incredibly disappointing. I it's not golf is more fun with the buddies. It is and now I'm not this appointed at all. I'm happy. You're just like me. Like, I prefer playing myself to be honest with you, right? 'cause it's it's right 'cause it solitude evident, actually, I I mean, I enjoyed for my irritant before here like my favorite goal, of course in the wrong. And this is my favorite place in the world to play golf is the par-three Coors in Lewis, Delaware. The midway parts get off their acts. It's me and my buddies plays there every summer, and it is like if you told me tomorrow and just over your done, you never could play gone. Forget it or the end. You're you're checking out you more undergoing I'd say meet me, midway and play all day. That's that's a hundred percent true. Komo's Jeff Pohjola spoke about it with democratic strategist, Kathy Allen and Republican strategist Randy Pepple. It seems to me that Mr. Mueller is not following anybody else's timeline other than is own. And he is conducting the investigation as a professional that. I think most people realize that he is. And he's going to provide a roadmap for the investigations to continue. I would suspect and the Democrats will take up his report in the house of representatives and follow the leads that he's uncovered and keep pursuing him. So while his part of the investigation may be coming to an end in the next week or so you can rest assured that the investigation still has a couple more years. I don't know. I look at this. And I say, well, the best news about this is that we won't have to read about all of the things he's supposed to do anytime soon. The fact is that. We've been sort of all the loaded with whole the whole Mueller action. And even though I tend to think I do appreciate the fact that he is handling things by the book straight up being very honest about what's going on. I just think that it's not among the top atrocities. I see in this president. And no matter how the American people look at it. It's still not going to be what I think is the big issue. They take to the polls and that brings us to Roger stone who was indicted by the special counsel for lying to congress. He had a gag order slapped on them, and then got smacked even harder by the federal judge after he posted on Instagram what could be perceived as a threat. Well, he, and I have much in common when it comes to the ability to get constant press based upon stupid things that we all think we're stupid. And I think in his case he just wanted love and craves kind of attention. He used to get when he was a bigger shot. I think it's unfortunate that the judge to revoke bail and put him in jail right now. I mean, the the fact is that he broke the gag order that she'd imposed on him. And it was a colossally stupid thing to do as he himself admitted. And when you see that type of violation it should be punished right away. Not just re re-instituting order on essences.
