Good Morning This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to accomplish tasks. Don't just work on them. Because I write about productivity, I've seen many people's to do lists. Creating A to do list is wise, but I've noticed a common flaw. The lists will often contain items such as work on proposal or work on lesson, plan or work on novel. It matters how frame tasks. These goals to work on things are nebulous. Mean what exactly does it mean to work on your taxes or to work on a blog post? This uncertainty is the enemy of productivity. We're better off framing our plans in terms of accomplishments, not what projects we plan to work on without specific benchmarks. You can picture how this fuzziness plays out in the course of a day. When you plan to spend the time before your next appointment, working on your blog will, what does that mean? You may do some reading on the topic. You're planning to write about her. You may write and rewrite the headline in the opening paragraph until they're perfect, and then your time is up. You. Don't have much to show for yourself. But suppose you sit down at your computer with the specific intention of drafting two blog posts before your next appointment. You have a discrete achievable goal. With that clear goal. You Pace yourself to get the work done on schedule. When? It's time for that appointment. You'll know whether you've achieved this goal or not. If you have great. If, you haven't written both posts well. You'll need to figure out a time to finish them later. And maybe that's not optimal, but you will remain aware of your progress and can make adjustments to stay on schedule. So. How do you shift your perspective and attend to what you plan to accomplish rather than what you plan to work on? First and most importantly build a smarter to do list with clear deliverables. To do lists with nebulous items like closet or new program recruiting rarely lead to progress. That's rapid and significant. Aimed for to do list entries like this. Right to blog posts. Box Up winter clothes and put them in the attic. Identify five organizations that can help recruit people for our new program. Our tasks that you either did or didn't do. You know when you're finished. And if you don't finish, you know how much is left. Of course, even clear deliverables can be problematic if they're not realistic. Right to chapters in my book is clear, but if you've only got two hours allocated for this, you'll still feel overwhelmed. However the news is that clear deliverables can help you see quickly if you're being realistic or not. Try Listing all the specific steps involved in cleaning out your garage, and you'll see what I mean. Nebulous tasks. Just let us lie to ourselves. If you've been guilty of making nebulous to do lists it be hard to change your habits. But I do think it's possible to change your mindset over time. Try using this language of clearer doable tasks. Rather than what you're working on when you're narrating your actions to yourself or anyone else. If someone asks over lunch what you did that morning you can say I posted the listing of a new house for sale or I wrote the agenda effort. June staffer retreat. If you have no idea what you did. Well, it happens to all of us. But let that be a nudge to set clear doable intentions in the future. Don't just plan to work on things because that's sneaky, little phrase and just tank our productivity. In the meantime this is Laura. Thanks for listening and here's to making the most of our time. Happy Tuesday everybody it's QNA day. It's going to be a little bit different though. I do have four emails from people. Normally I pull questions that y'all email to four things with Amy Brown. Jim Dot Com. But I have four emails that touch on things that I think we all need to hear. At least I want to elaborate on so not necessarily questions but just things I want to share and then I'm also gonNA share quote because I'm starting Tuesday's Cuna episodes off with a quote these days. But I wanted to talk about how there's highs and lows in everybody's Day and we will get through this and you're not alone because today in the same our I cried. I was really frustrated and screamed and through the wall. It happens but I also laughed in that our too. So there's good and bad moments in this crazy time that we're in but whichever one of those you're landing on whether it's the crying or screaming or the laughing be in those moments. Don't push them down like I recognized when I got really frustrated and through Pentothal and then screams. I knew I needed to step back and maybe do a breathing exercise which this is one that Mary has put up on Instagram. That her chiropractor gave her and breathe in for four seconds. Then you hold it for six then you breathe out for eight okay. So let's do it together right here. We're just GONNA as you're listening to this podcast. I know this is going to be silly but please do it with me. Let's bring him before. Hold for six. Was that six zero. Let's go out for eight. Okay I mean I guess. I'm not very good at counting because I was like wait. How long but repeat that three to five times whenever you find yourself in a situation when I did that. It really helped me. But I didn't ignore that I was frustrated. I just tried to work through it and I gave myself grace. Because especially if you're a parent you're trying to still work fulltime and do a lot of the things with their schooling or just even entertaining them or having them around when you're trying to get work done or if they have a bad attitude like for example is trying to work with Stevenson on something my son and he had a bad attitude and it just sent me the over the edge but probably because earlier in that our I also broke down crying. Because I don't know I was feeling scared for my dad. He's in an assisted living home. I can't see him right now. He has a lot of anxiety he is scared. I WANNA somehow figure out a way to take the news off of his TV. Because I feel like if you would watch less news he would be less anxious about the whole thing because I think when he turns on the news just like what sent me into a little emotional meltdown was I turn on the news. And there was a nursing home where they were evacuating people because sixty of the residents tested positive for cove in nineteen and I thought okay. Well that's not good and I just think with my dad's health condition. I don't know how he can handle it if he got it. But I do see amazing stories of like one hundred and one year old that survived Cova and whenever I see that I try to focus on that and say okay so there is hope this is amazing but then you have someone sixty one years old Joe Jiffy right here in Nashville who passed away on Sunday from cove in nineteen. I still am having a hard time processing that when it just doesn't seem real so I had my emotional moment because I'm scared for my dad but I I don't need to stay in that fear but I think it's okay that I recognize it then. I had my frustrated moment with Stevenson and then I also had laughter with Sta Sheera because you know well actually as a family we had a funniest videos on TV. They have these funny videos. And it's like America's home videos but just different and so funny like we were all laughing but then later I had track practice with Sushi era and we laughed and had a great time so I think let's all recognize that there's so many highs and lows in a day given these circumstances and you're just GonNa have to roll with them in. It's okay but in any of them if you ever just need to stop and do some breathing. I recommend that also what what time is it will when I'm recording this. It's like three thirty. I'm like also wind. Can I have a cocktail? I was texting Mary earlier today and I was like Oh. I don't know how some parents are doing it if they have more than two kids. Or you know 'cause Stevenson's teacher. She has three children of her own and then she's also trying to teach distance learning to her class students but then her children are home from school and she's having to help teach them too and I was like. Oh my gosh. I didn't even so teachers hats off to you. I didn't even think about that part however China's still do your teaching job for your students in your classroom but then all at their houses but then you have your kids at home too so big. Hugs Big. Hugs to everybody. We're all going to get through this and we're GONNA come out on the other side stronger than ever so the quote. I'm going to share with you today before I get into. The emails is something. It's not really something super inspirational. That you would probably expect an a quote right about now. But I saw Charlemagne the God put it up which he works for. My company lives in new. York is on like the hip hop station and I saw this thing that he put on instagram. And it said having trouble forcing yourself to stay home shave your eyebrows off safety. I people I just am. My mind is blown away at some of the people that I'm still seeing out about gathered in groups and going to places. Obviously you're going to need to leave your home for a central things or if you have a job and essential work place in you need to go but I know that those type of people are taking proper percussion. I'm still seeing some people on the news and online that are not taking this whole social distancing things. Stay at home thing seriously and so. I thought that was a funny way to maybe get yourself to stay home like shave your eyebrows off. And then you're not gonNA want to go anywhere okay. Let's get into the emails. This first one is from Cindy. Hey Amy I work in a busy emergency room in Fayetteville North Carolina as you can imagine. This time is particularly. Trying scary stressful. When things get crazy over anything from a new standpoint I tend to sort of just stick my head in the sand when I get oversaturated sometimes in an unhealthy way clearly. I can't do this with Kobe. Nineteen because I literally have to know all that I can about it that being said I'm starting to try to limit my different sources of hearing about it when I saw the title of your podcast paused. Do I want to listen to it? Is it going to be different in a useful way? I don't know what finally made me press play but I'm so happy and grateful that I did. It was exactly what I needed at that exact moment. I not only listen to it but I listened to it twice and actually took notes the second time I've been feeling increasingly anxious and that my feelings and thoughts are crazier unrealistic or too realistic then. I'm not taking it seriously enough or too seriously and on and on I shared this podcast on my facebook page and I have plans to post some of points on it for discussion. Thank you so much. Keep doing what you do love. Yeah so cindy yeah. I totally understand wanting to limit consumption of Kobe. And I think that that's what we all should do. You have to do what is best for you sometimes you. You need to be informed but you also need to shut off the news similar to what I need to do with my dad. I I know that he wants information. But he's getting too much information. So Cindy you're in the field so I understand. You need to be as informed as possible but for anyone else listening. Make sure you have a healthy balance of what you're taking in so that way you don't make yourself crazy with it and also cindy thank you so much for what you do. We appreciate you so much anybody in healthcare. That's working at a doctor's office or a hospital anybody. I have another email that addresses something like that. So I'll save my thoughts on that for that email but I just appreciated the Cindy and if anybody else avoided last week's episode that was on Copay nineteen where I had a therapist on at three chords therapy on instagram. Catherine DEFATTA. She was on and she really helped. Walk through this Corentin situation that. We're in like things that we can do to help us get through this crazy time so if you avoided it not knowing what it was going to be like maybe go back and give it a go and see if you like it but if you need to still avoid it that's totally fine too. I get it but there was a lot of helpful information like Cindy said. She listened to it twice and she took notes. So thank you for sharing that email next one is from Heather Haney. A friend of mine suggested that we should start journaling. What is happening during the corona virus as a way to remember history? I normally don't like to journal but thought this was a great idea and wanted to share this with you and your listeners. It'll be pretty amazing to look back at our journal. Twenty plus years from now and share the firsthand experience with our family especially kids as it will be a part of their history bucks. I'm also taking photos and saving all of the funny memes. So she's taking notes on the serious side of things but yeah collecting. Some of these memes is pretty cool too. Because they're pretty awesome right now. I gotTa high five the creativity that is coming out of this lockdown situation because people are bringing the content and bringing us a laugh and a smile when we need it. And that's kind of why I shared Charlemagne's post as my quote earlier because when I saw that this morning it just made me laugh out loud. Also Bobby's girlfriend. Caitlin put up a picture of the Tiger King Guy which if y'all have not watch tiger Kenya you should. But she put up a picture of him and he's got like these blonde bangs in this mullet and the back and she's like girls after Corentin life for however long. What ARE WE IN AFTER? We've been staying home for three or four or five or six weeks now without getting our hair done in our nails done. We're all GONNA come out looking like tiger king. Heather thank you for that tip. I think that that's great and I know I don't like to journal that much. I've been doing my four things gratitude journal and I do think it will be interesting to look back on that a so. Maybe that's a way that you can do it and also get in your gratitude at the same time. You can be journaling things that are happening and express things that you're thankful for the challenges. Still going on actually. Today's March thirty first. So it's the last day the gratitude challenge but guess what giving these Crazy Times. We're keeping it going. We're going to try to journal gratitude as many days in a row as as we can. I mean don't put pressure on yourself to do it every day once. The challenge is up but I think as much as possible and hopefully formed some sort of a habit the last month and you want to keep going and maybe you realize you finally want a journal that we have then you can grab one of those two guys. I don't know about you but with my family's busy schedule. We do not have time to be sick. That is why all about elderberry supplements from norms farms. Starting with elderberry. I love and was so impressed and supportive of your adoption journey. Thank you Martha. I know you always have the best intentions but every time you talk about the medical crisis where suffering currently all y'all talk about is the doctors nurses. I'm sure you know from your father's recent health crisis. There are many healthcare workers that work one. On one with patients physical therapists occupational Therapist Respiratory Therapists. Lab Techs who take blood. X-ray C. T. tax excetera the number one test to help diagnose corona nineteen is bloodwork chest x ray NC tea-chest. Please give credit to all the amazing healthcare workers. We are just here to help. Y'All so Martha thank you so much for this email and the reminder and yes we need to be aware and grateful and thankful for anyone and everyone that is in healthcare right now and I mean that's helped me rephrased how I'm talking about things and I even put up a post after I did a live with the doctor the other night and I think I said something about donating things to local hospitals and some people left comments in there saying well not only just the hospital but local doctors offices need stuff and nursing homes and so really if you have things that you can help distributor or hand out than see in your area where it needs to be. It doesn't just have to be a hospital and also are four things totes and t shirts that we made those up and they are for healthcare heroes and they say scrubs on caffeinate wash hands repeat and we went back and forth and back and forth on what those four things should be and I know it doesn't fit every healthcare worker because not every health care worker wear scrubs and not every health care worker caffeinate but it just overall was the best four things but what's amazing about our totes is if you want it to say something different we have a customizable option and you can put whatever four things you want on there but our healthcare hero shirt and toads are going to support medical needs here in the US and in Haiti now a SPA are four things. Line is under our S- pauline which typically supports Haiti always has. That's just what that's what we set it up for but we are definitely changing course and putting the help where it needs to be right now which is right here in America so just know that were involved in trying to find different ways that we can help out with what's going on and it's for all health care workers so if you happen to be one you're buying it for yourself. You can use the code hero to get ten percent off. And that's just something we wanted to do for the health care workers or if you know a healthcare worker and you want to buy one and gifted to them then that would be super amazing too so all that's up. Four things dot com or radio DOT COM. You can find it there and then last email is from Hannah. Good morning amy about the four things gratitude journal in December and I've been using it daily since the beginning of the year. It's my New Year's resolution to practice gratitude of always had a difficult time journaling in the past and the Journal makes it so easy. I enjoy finding small things. Throughout the day to be grateful for this has been essential and hell practice do during this current pandemic. I remember a few months ago on your podcast. You had mentioned there would be another journal released in the future. The new gratitude journal would be similar format with a new cover. New quotes and new stickers. Since I've been using this daily I only have about thirty pages left. Is there a chance you would release the Journal soon? Okay good question. I know this is more. This is actually a question that was sitting in not just want to talk about that. Mary and I were just talking about this. Hannah and we don't have one ready to release so we just weren't anticipating people using it so quickly because we're not every day journalist except for the month of March we have been during the challenge and we never wanted people to feel pressured or Journal. Every day. So either we're going to encourage people to maybe by another tied. I one and just keep it as two point zero or we're GONNA get to work on that. We're not saying that it's not happening. It is but there's a production issue right now. We don't know the people that could print it and get it done. They're all over the world. The company were working with out of Chicago is based in different parts of the world too. And there's people in England that work on it and then in Turkey and then like I said in Chicago and so it's kind of a crazy time to try to get a journal made and then produced and shipped and then we get it into your hands. So we'll start working on that but I don't know how long it's going to take so I applaud you and think it's amazing that you have been journaling diligently that's so so cool but we won't have one soon and that's just it's it hurts me to say that to you because. I know it may not be fun to buy another tie-dye one but it could be fine. I mean that's fine. You could have to tide I once and then your third one could be the new one if we can get that one done in time but you're journaling like a like a mad woman which is amazing so that's an update on that and again if you WANNA keep journaling with us. You don't have to have our journal to do it. Four things dot com if you do want the journal but if not you just jot down four things in your phone or in any old journal that you have around the house at work. It's and then that way. Hopefully it can help get you through this and then like the other email from earlier. It'll be something where you can look back and remember these crazy times which ev- even without the pandemic that's something. Mary and I thought the Journal would be cool for is to keep it. We wanted to make cute something. You would want to keep and you could reflect like the other day. I sat on the floor and reflected back on all the things. I've been thankful for this year so it was cool to do that. And it's only been a few months so imagine in five ten years to look back on reflect on things you were grateful for. I hope everyone has a great day. We will have a new episode up on Thursday and then don't forget that on Saturday outweigh episode. One goes up. If you haven't heard the trailer that is also up in the four things feed that loaded last Saturday and then this coming. Saturday will be episode. One and I'm doing outweigh with Lisa from at the wellness activities and we are breaking the stigma and exposing the gray area of eating disorders and disordered eating stuff. That typically isn't getting talked about or that people feel embarrassed or shamed about. Beware solutions seeking problems

Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to beware solutions seeking problems. Not every so-called solution. We'll make your life better. Some, just add to your to do list and waste your time. Now, don't get me wrong. I love strategies and tactics for solving problems and making the most of our time. When we streamline tasks that are not important to us. We have more time for what is. But sometimes what's presented as the solution? Isn't actually solving a problem at all. Some life hacks are just silly. Take one I saw recently that advised keeping dishwasher pods the windowsill to save the time. It would take to get them out of the cabinet. I am not sure that the five seconds it takes to retrieve a pod from the cabinet. Right by the dishwasher is such a huge problem that it justifies a solution requiring ugly windowsill clutter. Or another hat. Stretching drying your hair. Now stretching while you're just waiting for something such as when you've got food. Heating up in the microwave is one thing. But if I've got time to dry, my hair, I'm pretty sure. I've got time to stretch to. And if I try both simultaneously, I'm pretty sure that I. tip over and lands on the floor. As for the advice to never leave a room empty-handed. Well, this makes sense in theory, but never leaving the room empty handed means you're thinking about cleaning up every time you're in the room, which seems like it's adding trouble rather than taking it away. No one is ever going to achieve a state of cluttered perfection. Whatever object you carve out, will soon be replaced by another one. If the room is still usable. Then rules like this may be solutions chasing after problems that don't exist. Then there are solutions that are helpful for some people, but maybe not for you because you don't have the problem they're intended to solve. For example, lots of magazines will tell you that wise home managers, meal, plan and shop in bulk. But if in normal non social distancing times you enjoy stopping by specialty grocery store and your way home from work and deciding what to Cook for dinner based on what looks good. Then, meal, planning and bulk shopping would amount to turning pleasure into a chore. How is that a win? Essentially. You want to avoid devoting time to solving a problem that you don't have. In considering whether to try purported solution. Compare, the time invested, and the outcomes generated now. With what you would expect with the solution. If the so-called solution doesn't require less time. Produce better outcomes, or both it's probably not worth it for you. What are the most ridiculous life hacks you've ever heard? Have you ever fallen for solution seeking a problem? You can write me about it at before. Breakfast podcast at IHEARTMEDIA DOT COM. In the meantime. This is Laura. Celebrate milestones along the way

Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to celebrate milestones along the way. You don't have to wait for that lifetime. Achievement Award tavist sense of accomplishment. You can identify and celebrate small wins on your way there. This tip comes from chip and Dan. Heath book the power of moments. The heath brothers built on work by Steve Camp to out. How Video Games do a great job of giving players feelings of progress an accomplishment when they get to a new level? You enjoy playing and want to keep playing because you've experienced success. And I'm not much of a Gamer myself, but I know that when my kids have reached new levels and their favorite games, there has been widespread rejoicing in our house. And more game playing because progress is motivating. When you've a new milestone, you feel fired up and excited to see what you can accomplish next. The heat's point out that the couch to five K. APP and the boy scouts, but their badges do something similar. My favorite example is fitbit's India badge awarded to those who walk one thousand, nine, hundred ninety seven miles, which is the length of India. Never mind where those steps were taken over. What period of time you have a sense of triumph and realizing that you've walked as far as India is long. No matter the occasion you can celebrate. I've heard about a pacesetter for folks aiming to run a marathon in three hours and forty five minutes, who led his runners in a dance break at every mile marker. I love this idea of adding a little fun and Levity by celebrating each completed mile. Ensure Finishing Mile Twenty six as more momentous than finishing mile fourteen. But if you don't make it past mile fourteen, there's not it'd be any celebrating at Mile Twenty six. Marking accomplishments along the way renews runners motivation to work toward their big goal. So! How do we recognize and celebrate incremental milestones in our own lives? I find, it helps to dream up rewards that are related to your big goal. For instance. If you're trying to save up for a down payment on your first house every time, the designated savings account crosses say ten, thousand dollar, threshold ten, thousand, twenty, thousand or thirty thousand. You could celebrate by buying yourself a decorating magazine to get ideas for your new house or by driving or walking with your partner around the neighborhood you hope to live in. Consider the opportunity cost

Everyone else can go get their own stack, so remember to save something for yourself with Pepperidge Farm Milano. Welcome, to before breakfast, a production of iheartradio. Good Morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to consider the opportunity cost. When you're deciding whether to take on a new responsibility or accept an invitation. Don't evaluate this option in isolation. Instead consider how the option compares to the next best opportunity that you have to give up to say yes. In a recent episode of the NPR show podcast planet money economists were asked about the most useful ideas from economics. Michigan State, economist, Lisa Cook named Opportunity Cost, and she's got my vote on this one. As. You may remember from your econ one. Oh, one days, opportunity cost is the principle that the true cost of something is what you have to give up in order to get it. In other words that new car you're considering doesn't just cost thirty thousand dollars. It's opportunity. Cost might be the kitchen renovation that you don't have thirty thousand dollars for if you buy the car. Or maybe you're in a job. Where in times you can pick up extra shifts, the opportunity cost. The car might be the extra day every other week. You'll need to work until the car is paid off. or You could invest thirty thousand dollars, and in twenty years with compound interest have enough saved to retire a year earlier. You get the idea. As is often the case, money and time turn out to be similar. Our choices about time turn out to have an opportunity cost to. When you choose to do one thing you are choosing not to do something else. Such as life, there are no freebies, but you WANNA. Make sure that your choice is both conscious and is. The key realization here is that when you choose to fill your time with something, the alternative is not nothing. It's doing whatever else you could have done in the same amount of time. So if it takes you three hours to make the elaborate desert, you saw on pinterest. The opportunity cost might be reading most of that new novel that you keep meaning to pick up. Both could occupy the same block of leisure time. Or, maybe your team has set up a recurring meeting at nine. Am On, Tuesdays. The opportunity cost might be the other work. People could have done at that time. Such as powering through big projects without interruption when people's minds tend to be fresh. Or in normal times meeting clients for breakfast. So is the desert or the recurring meeting worth it. It's entirely possible that the answer is yes, but the issue is that people often decide to take on activities based on whether they're free. Not whether these activities are the best use of time. When someone asks to meet on Tuesday at nine. Am You look at your calendar? See that it's open and say yes. You don't consider that. Maybe come Tuesday your biggest client. We'll be asking for a proposal by noon or that. At eight fifty five am on Tuesday. Your cousin will want to facetime because after a month of quarantining with his significant other, they've decided to get engaged and want to share the celebratory news with you. Know, of course, neither of these new developments may be likely, but you don't know that. When we take on commitments or lukewarm about we may have to turn down things we really want to do. Or throw our whole schedules into flux and create bad feelings in order to make the good stuff happen. Better to be more strategic. When you say yes to something that's only a five or six on a ten point scale. You crowd out space for the eights and nines. That's the real opportunity cost. Don't assume your time will only be filled with zero. So today as you're considering taking things on, ask yourself what else you could do with an equivalent quantity of time. Consider how you'd feel if an opportunity to take on something that was an eight or nine wafted into your life. And consider that you can often create opportunities for eights and nines if you're smart and keep your eyes open. Hopefully this will empower you to turn down the mediocre with more confidence. Everyone else can go get their own stack, so remember to save something for yourself with Pepperidge Farm Milano. Welcome to before breakfast a production of iheartradio. Good Morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to write fast and edit slip. When you're working on a project that requires making something new. Aim to create I without questioning yourself. Then once you've gotten your ideas down. You can be more disciplined about turning the something. Into something better. This council to write fast and at slow will be familiar to writers who are often encouraged to treat writing and editing as separate processes. They require different kinds of thinking. Just as we can't really multitask by checking email while running a conference call, we're better off writing and editing successively. Rather than. Between them in one sitting. In her classic Book Bird By Bird, some instructions on writing and vice author, an Lamont urges would be writers to pen crummy first drafts. Well crummy isn't the word she uses, but it's will use for this family friendly show. A not very good. First draft paves the way she says for good second drafts and terrific their drafts. Lamont discourages perfectionism which she writes means that you try desperately not to leave so much mess to clean up. But avoiding mess may not be advisable according to Lamont. Clutter is wonderfully fertile ground. tidiness she writes suggests something is as good as it's going to get. tidiness makes me think of health, breath or suspended animation. While writing needs to breathe and move. I love that description. When we write fast in free. We give our writing breathing room and space for movement. We don't stifle it with premature criticism. Only after we've gotten our ideas on paper, are we ready to shift to slow painstaking editing? Right, fast at it slow could be the mantra for national novel, Writing Month or Nino Ramo the month-long challenge in which hundreds of thousands of people try to write a fifty thousand word manuscript during the month of November. That works out to an average of sixteen hundred sixty seven words per day across the thirty days of the month. You can't write sixteen hundred sixty seven words per day and do everything else you do. If you stop to critique yourself every time you've written ten words, you have to keep going. And Save the editing for December, and beyond. I wrote the first draft of my time management fable. Juliet School of possibilities during no rhyme 2017. Yep I wrote in an entire draft of a book during November. But the book wasn't published until March of two thousand nineteen. My editors than I spent big chunks of that time more than a year improving the novel. Honestly I think that was about the right pace. The underlying principle of right fast at it's slow works for other endeavors besides writing. And many contacts, generating ideas freely allows you and your team to have a lot of content to work with. Then, you can refine the ideas with rigor and discipline. You're better off generating a ton of ideas for how to market your new product and then analyzing what will work. Verse analyzing each idea as you come up with it. That's a great way to get bogged down. Being with lots of crummy stuff allows us to sort through the rocks to find the gems. And get those gyms polished to share with the world. In the meantime. Imagine a change jar
"Hey listeners look sometimes along then. Yoga class isn't in the cards, so maybe a cookie is. Pepperidge Farm Milano believes you should make some time for yourself once in a while. I like to go hide in my Home Office with the snack occasionally, and while people find me eventually. At least it's good for a few minutes. Milano cookies are truly a treat worthy of your. Everyone else can go get their own stack, so remember to save something for yourself with Pepperidge Farm Milano. Welcome to before breakfast a production of iheartradio. Good Morning! This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to use the image of a change jar to inspire you to stick with good habits. We'd all like to make good choices. The trouble is that there's often no immediate benefit. Sure Choosing Broccoli over potato chips at lunch might have long term health benefits. But when you're a GROWNUP, no one is praising you for this choice. But you can come up with ways to praise yourself. or at least picture, this individual choice as a meaningful part of a larger journey. That's what before breakfast listener Monica does. She writes that she has created a mental image of a change jar. The change jar she says is the person I want to be. Every time I choose a glass of water over a piece of candy or do some inbox maintenance instead of opening instagram. I'm contributing to that. Change, Jar. Investment into a newer better smarter me. She writes that it's been a powerful metaphor and I can see why. Research has found that a sense of progress is one of the most powerful factors in motivation and engagement. People can be working in chaotic organizations, but as long as they sense steady forward motion, and that they are cheating small regular wins. They can be quite content. So wise managers naturally structure work to allow for these small victories. Each celebrated and you build toward the next. A metaphorical change jar creates the same sense of progress. You eat an apple with breakfast and another coin goes in. You walk on your lunch break and you hear the Clinton the jar. If. You'd like to stretch this metaphor a little farther. You could actually make it literal. Get a jar and put it on your desk or your dresser. When you think about little good choices you've made. You can put in a coin as the jar fills up, you can see your progress. And of course, if you really put change at a jar, you can use it for something fun to reward yourself for all these hundreds of good choices. Not a round of drinks or pizza dinner these days, but maybe some new books or puzzles the Sun Great. Ultimately good choices have their own intrinsic rewards. But in the meantime, some external ones can help whether metaphorical or literal. It's always good to see progress. Do you have a strategy that helps you stay motivated toward your goals. No no happy to everybody it's V thing day. QNA Day and chases here with me. You know who I my son. My latest follows on on instagram are all the cheer people. Yeah and I'm following Jerry. which is do know his real name is Jeremiah? I did not know that show. Oh He's Jerry but on instagram. He's Jeremiah Harris. and Oh my gosh look how cute. He is in this last picture he posted. If y'all are not watching cheer then get on it Also this last weekend the Taylor. Swift documentary came out to Miss Americana. Definitely Watch that I. I've been a big Taylor swift fan for a really really really long time. I've seen my obsession is almost fizzled. It used to be really big. Used to be a lot like it was bat like I took art classes to learn how to paint so that when I met her back in early bobby bones show career days. There was a meet meet-and-greet with her before a concert. She had an Austin and you know the radio REP was like cabinet. Get y'all in. You can go and you can give her this painting that you made eight her and so I waited in line and I'm carrying this huge painting in its of Taylor. Space kind of she had a big blonde long curly hair and I I gave it to her and it was awkward because she was like. Wow I think she said I want. The video was on Youtube. I couldn't video Because you weren't allowed to have cameras risen there but what I did was I hit record and I had my phone in my or my flip cam or something in my bag so it was recording. There's no visual but you could hear the audio audio and Taylor was like. I'm pretty sure it went like this. Oh my gosh. You're so talented and videos on Youtube and then are you to page got like a bunch of stuff got deleted and taken down from the early days and I'm so bummed. I didn't pull that one but also needless to say this documentary very maybe reignited my love for Taylor and I you know bobby recently asked us if we were on an island. What like two albums we would take with us and my first awesome was George Strait album and my next one was Taylor swift and her? Og One I was GONNA say okay the very first one self titled. Oh Wow Tim Democrats in the two thousand six. Og Because teardrop on my guitar yeah. There's some good stuff. Our Song forgot about all y'all yeah there's still. It was just very proud of her and she was. You know this when she's get visit where she started speaking out about how she ever had an eating disorder and it's just just a reminder to of you never know what people are going through because I would have never thought Taylor's on top of the world. She has everything going for very talented like so busy. The I just Kinda thought when she got skinny. It's like well. She probably has a trainers probably eats right. She's you know busy sunk tour. She's dancing but no I mean it was a real L. thing. She took comments that people said to her and then she was then starving herself because she didn't feel like her body was good enough and I just thought wow even when you have all that thing still get to you so it just validated the series. That Lisa from the well necessities necessities and I are working on and when I say the wall necessities. That's her instagram handle. And then we had met her in New York a couple of weeks ago and we had a meeting about it then. We had a facetime chat the other day for a couple of hours to plan out more of the series. And it's GonNa be it's GonNa live in the four things podcast we're going to release lease it Over a series of four Saturdays. I'm there will be a trailer technically five. The trailer was set it up and have a little disclaimer Mer and and then we're really building the foundation of what's going to be in each episode we're going to have on therapists and doctors and experts but then real stories from real. Oh people not not Taylor Swift's although she's a real person and she went through that but not like somebody. That doesn't seem real to some of us. But just yeah your everyday everyday people and then Lisa and I will be sharing our stories so I'm really looking forward to it. We still don't know for sure what we're calling it but it will be not a very special series that will live within this podcast and I hope that if you have any thoughts on this advice you can email me. Four things the with Amy Brown at Jamal Dot com going to be about disordered eating kind of the gray area. Not If you legit legit are clinically anorexic or clinically lead that. You need help it like you need help. And Lisa and I are not saying we're equipped for that but there is that gray area people that struggle goal with food and maybe dabble with starving themselves. Dabble with throwing up or but there is a realize they're doing or they they. Their brain is consumed with thoughts of food. That's not healthy either. Or they over exercise. That in itself is a way of purging. Your food without how throwing up. It's a I read this book Brain over binge and it. She was technically bullying but she never threw up but she would go to the gym for hours and hours hour to burn off anything that she ate well so it was like a non pershing king blaming anyway we'll have definitions of each thing anyway. Doubt Taylor's have documentaries great. I'm like how do we get on this and then also on net flicks. Alex Cheer is Great and I'm following all of cheer on Instagram and to like Jerry is the most positive a person and he is just and you know he's been through a lot in his life and he just does not let anything get him down. I guess not going to happen. He's just like okay. All Right Yup. I mean look how happy he looks right here in just a reminder that we can all better matt talk one another you know lift each other up encourage folks people that are listening right now. They're not watching cheer. They don't know what Matt Talk Means. But it's walked for people that have make the Matt and then when you're on the sidelines cheer on. We should all be cheering each other. They're on a jury. Is the king the ultimate so good so There's some wrecks okay. Let's get into the questions. I'm bound and determined to make today's episode so like actually fifteen minutes. I know I say that every time but then I'm GonNa cut you off and let's do it. Okay all right. The first one's from emily. Hey Amy a regular listener to your podcast and the bobby bones show. I was wondering if you have any helpful tips for dry skin and the winter I get really bad dry hands and ripe patches on my face around my eyes just didn't know if you had any suggestions. ooh I mean everybody's skin is so different. I feel like I'm not the biggest expert when it comes to skin care. I had different people on but I will say that. I'm GonNa just say one thing. I know you need probably as more water. Consumption drink water drink water drink water. If you think you're drinking enough especially in the winter you probably need to drink more. I have realized how I've been drinking my adequate amount now. Finally and I'm really trying to stick to it. 'cause you know water was my word for twenty twenty my word of the year for many reasons but but one because I needed a drink more and I've seen a difference in the texture my skin in like how it feels and how I feel well and then maybe a gentle or cleanser. I have no idea what you're using to wash your face but if it is dry don't continue to dry it out with a harsh cleanser. Maybe you need need to specifically target cleanser that says gentle cleanser and that might help a little bit and then I would just use warm cool to warm water not hot water. That's a tip that any of my face facial friends have have given me is that we often wash are are faced with too hot water and that can dry it out I like to apply my moisturizer. Sometimes fairly like to damp skin because has something about your skin will soak it better if it's got the water in there too. Don't ask me the science behind that. Then maybe what are what are you sleeping on a ever like or what do you like. If you're I don't know how you sleep. Sometimes you may sleep on your face and that may be causing you break out like but sleep on fabrics. That are kind to your skin like I sleep on a silk pillowcase. 'cause it's good for my hair and my skin but make sure it's silk or cotton silk pillowcases. Also help with keeping your hair ready ready to go like not messing it up too much. 'cause some people wonder how do you go to bed with your hair ready and then you wake up and it's basically ready and I really feel like myself myself. Pillowcases helps me out with that and then there are people that say it helps prevent wrinkles again wishful thinking sci-fi inspire that has something to do with. How your face if you sleep on your face in your pillow like the silk is better but again may not being an expert and? I hope you'll know when y'all come come to me with questions like this that you know I'm not I can't say like well. Here's a legit thing. Plus everybody skin is so different. I don't know those are some tips that I would give you and then something else I just I wanNA throw in about facial care and what I've been doing and I it's water is my word for twenty twenty but I'll should be neck care because I never used to bring everything down my neck like down my neck and my chest area but now I am new me because because my neck is aging and I don't like it and I do I take care my face and I think about that and I'm like why am I not putting these same same products down my neck and Kerry you know the national beauty girl. She always tells me. Bring it down your neck and I feel like for a couple of years. And they're like yeah. Yeah Yeah and now I'm like yeah. Yeah do do it and I just want to encourage. y'All take your skin care through your neck down near chess. Kerry likes to say I don't say this okay this this is not what I say. I don't actually say it when I'm leaving. She's like amy. I'm telling you from your forehead to your tits so forehead career forehead all the way down your chest which I really have just been made making my way to my neck so I still have some work to do. But that's my tip and then low MOISTURIZER MOISTURIZER entire body. People like just do it. I don't know how old y'all are those of you listening to me right now but I am almost thirty nine and I wish I been worst rising my entire body forever and I haven't been so but I doubt I am now to Remember the Food Pyramid and an apple. My Best Friend Lost Her dad to his fight with cancer last night. We've already been on rocky terms in regards to our friendships at a loss at how to support her any advice. This suggests I show support her when she's hardly speaking to me and all of our friends and Co workers are looking for me looking to me for answers allow I mean I would say just do it. Just reach out and I have no idea what Puyol I'm rocky terms again. That's between Y'all and it may be supersensitive but I would not the whole back. I mean you can't do that for fear that whatever y'all had going on before this could be something where you could step in and maybe that could repair that. This is so much bigger than that. When you lose a parent a lot of stuff kind of goes to the side and you're only in charge of your actions you you cannot control how they're going to respond but they're gonNA have people? I mean when my mom passed away I had people that I barely knew like reaching out expressing sympathy sending emails again literally people I was like. Wow that's kind of crazy. They sent me a note but very thoughtful and it meant a lot to me so if she's is going to have people like that reaching out you better believe that you should be reaching out if you were once close to her. Forget the rockiness. I I don't again. It doesn't matter that doesn't matter I would just say just do it. And then judge their reaction. See how far you should lean into that if you kind of feel like it was received but that's about where it should end the new park if you feel like that opened the door and then maybe lean in and see how you can be be there and express your love and your sympathy in other ways like do they need you know. I don't know if they've kids so they need childcare to. They need a meal all deliver. Did they need to be taken to the spot to get a massage. Do they need something else. Like that. Where you can go in and be that friend that you know maybe you you want spoarer be ready to listen in case that's what they need and there's just so much going on but I think that man right right that's great advice had a rocky breath patch like who cares go for it and then again? It's up to your friend on how they respond. But I don't think you'll be happy with yourself knowing that and if other coworkers and stuff are coming to you for advice you could just say Oh man I think would would be good is making meal or sending a card or maybe all get together and send flowers or by her a massage as a group and send that that was Super Burke lunch to me and my sister because you are super stressed out. You don't do it right away. But then there's the planning the funeral and then after that there's the finances and all the paperwork for work in everything you have to go through and it's a long drawn out thing depending on who's in charge and for me and my sister. It was us so we were gifted several massages from people. Well and we would go together and that was something for us to do very relaxing. So yeah that's my advice on. That one was right. Next one's from tiffany. Hey Amy thinking thinking about trying the tinkle razors and starting to shave. My question is do us any shaving cream or cleanser or something while you do it okay. tinkle razors are amazing. Being there all my Amazon page radio DOT COM to find it and no. I don't use shaving cream but I do. Use My facial cleanser so I'll get cool to warm not hot water and I'll put my cleanser in there and I'll lather it up around my face and then I just kinda take tinkle razor and I just did. There's a video videos on Youtube. I think a long time ago Kelly and I.. From velvets edge made a youtube video about it or put it on the Bobby Bono Pager. Something about if you just googled. Hey Amy I'm loving all of the talk around disordered eating and how to focus on our overall health with that being said I used to juice cleanse once a month and was obsessive. Sessa about my food choices. Now I'm struggling with changing my limited mindset with food and being more relaxed. I know this is something you've talked about. Do you have any advice on how to still. They'll be getting in the benefits of juicing without being so restrictive I mean you can still have juice and not be restrictive and I understand that and I. I don't think juicing his bad I don't think juice cleanses are bad but if you have a disordered eating pastor needing disorder pass that's when juicing can get tricky because it can seem restrictive and then let's send you into a a binge restrictive cycle which is never good. But that's something that each individual has to be self aware of and and I think you can still like. juicing does have powerful benefits of getting nutrients right to your body but also it depends on. How is it being juice like? There's a lot out of research that can go into that. What kind of juice are you having? Cold pressed. Obviously cold pressed organic is going to be the best thing for you but not every juice juice place offers that there is certain juicers. Where if you do say you want to the maximum nutrients you need to drink it? You know as quickly early as possible because you're because you're asking about getting the nutrients that's why I'm sharing that other. There's plenty of great juices out there. But you could complement implement juicing to your meals like you could still have a green juice and instill have a meal and have meals all day long and that'll give you some of that nutrients that you want to get. You can do smoothies. That's an easy way to get some nutrients but pack in a lot You can can like not overcook some of your foods. I mean I feel like sometimes if you're concerned about nutrients you I know. I have a tendency to view this like not paid ten Janabi cooking vegetables. Overcook them. Big Time the more you cook them. Some of the nutrients goes out. But you're still eating vegetables. I mean it's better to the have it overcooked. A little than to not have any vegetables at all Still try to incorporate lots of fresh fruits and stuff into your diet hidden plant based things for new nutrients I mean I guess I guess my simple way of saying this is you don't have to eliminate juices juice from your life if that's how you like to get some nutrients but you can. How about you just add food in? And don't be scared of that but I know oh that it's hard especially if you're coming from place where you were restrictive but that's why I'm super excited about this series with Lisa because we'll hopefully give some tools that people can use to keep in their back pocket to kind of fight. The crazy thoughts thoughts that we have that they. Oh maybe I should just have juice all day long and I can't have any food. There are plenty of people if they have have a healthy relationship that they can do a proper cleanse. But what I've learned is that there's some people that can't that will send them into disordered eating and it's not worth it but that doesn't mean that juice is bad you can still have juice right. Does that make sense. What I'm saying like got a lot of sense? I I like juice like I liked juicing but I also have to know when I'm in a place where I can. Maybe just have juice use for a meal to give my digestion break but I have to be in a good place mentally to do that. Otherwise it may send me into eating too much my next meal and and I don't WanNa do that so I have to know my body no my brain. Nowhere Matt But I think it's good to be concerned about nutrients and caring about what you're putting into your body. But I think we complicate things. Sometimes we over complicate it set true. Yeah it's good advice do you. Do you have a degree juice and smoothies. You don't do it as a replacement but I do it just for like you said like it's way for me to get those nutrients because I'm sometimes times really bad and getting my Greens and some of that stuff that that's in there. That's a benefit. And so I just add it with a meal or like afternoon in between meals also little pick me up okay awesome. We'll hope that helped and I'll just before we leave. Say That we have our love line up up for the four things. Love shirts for my life speaks but we have officially added a pimp and joy to that so if you can go to radio DOT com. Every Tuesday fitting episode with a quote chases also here with me tonight and recording this on Monday night. This goes up well at midnight so the quote is actually for Mister Rogers and it says to love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is right here. And now Jason. We're talking about this. I'm like Yep I mean because you've been dealing with me recording this like at first you're GonNa meet probably an hour and forty minutes ago and then it shifted to like an hour after that and then I called you and I'm like I'm stuck at the storm trying to find stuff. Sheera this specific kind of marker and then while I was at the checkout line they had the Rhesus Easter eggs at the store and I thought you know what new new me unlike normally I'd be like oh can have that but now I'm like actually if I want that I can so I bought it and we just shared it and it's in. It's so good. There's something about the races egg. The Christmas tree the egg all of the shapes are different than the regular Reece's cups. I have a theory. What is it I think that it's how they drizzle the chocolate on versus the cups? Have the ridges? Yeah it's there will it's thicker but it's also like a smoother bite in. Yeah something about it. There's more of the filling. It's so good so we just enjoyed that right before we hopped on here and the back to the quote is. I've been all over the place today. Trying to find ways to get it all done and you know sometimes people that work with me like chase at times. Have they have to love me for WHO I am? Do we do hundred percent so the goal today is to still have the QNA under fifteen minutes? We better get going. Do it all right the first ones from Brittany. Hey Amy Confessions time. I'm a bit of a control freak. Actually I'm a lot of a control freak. I don't want to be this way and I always catch myself. When it's just a little too late. Do you have any tips for help? Let go of control so I'm actually kind of a little bit. I'm not a control freak in certain areas of my life but at home I am. Do you think of in control hear the. Do you think about me knowing me from the outside I think in certain moments there are moments when your hands are up. And you know there's some stuff I'm want to be in control of staff. I do not care like that's not a consistent control it just really depends. I but I do want things done a certain way at times and especially around the house and I feel like you know I should just maybe do it or if my husband's doing it he's doing it all wrong and I just need to do it because this is al. It needs to get done and I can get particular so I actually googled three tips for letting go of control. And this came from the blissful mind dot com and the first thing out of the three was to make a list of things. You can control that way you know you know the difference like this is an exercise to help you realize what you do have power over in your life for example healthwise you can. Maybe try to incorporate more fruits and veggies. Drink MORE WATER. Get more sleep. Choose when you work out or if you don't work out and then you break it down into smaller actions and choices that you actually do have and that takes the stress off like look at all these choices you have. And you've made like look at all this control then number two is break your reaction pattern so win. Were feeling like we don't have control over something or likely to experience anxiety Mood swings and frustration. See for me. I can't tell right now with all my hormones and stuff that I have going on with me if I'm just hormonal or Euro K. It's just life you haven't seen my frustration. My mood swings like when I went to throw milk across the kitchen suffering seen that I've seen it seen a few things so anyway minds definitely not from lack of control but some people. If you're struggling with that you could experience that and all of this comes from thoughts. We have about the situation that we're in so you've got to be aware of the trigger. Breathe that when you start to feel your body get tents practice self compassion when your thoughts begin to turn negative Recognize that your thoughts and feelings are nothing more than thoughts and feelings avoid over identifying with your thoughts and then the third thing they recommend is right down or recite affirmations which on Thursday's episode super excited. I have my friend Allie coming on. And she's Gonna. We do a whole thing on affirmations. She's really into them Our first thing that we talk about is writing for therapy and how it can be really therapeutic for you. And then she does. The second thing with me on affirmations so Thursday is going to be a good episode. I hope you'll download and listen to that but If you WANNA hear some affirmations help with control freaks I'm one hundred percent in control of my own life. I go with the flow and accept what comes my way I focus my energy on what is most beneficial for me. I am safe and secure in myself. So there's a four different affirmations you can choose which one right down but I personally like I am safe. Insecure and myself filleted that it could apply to a lot of us that we've got something going on just knowing that you're safe. You are secure in yourself. I go with the flow and acceptable comes my way. That's my problem at home sometimes. I'm not very go with the flow. I try to act go with the flow and bins. Like you're not being very good with. Flo you're kind of in and out of it some days. Your which is funny because I I have to go with the flow with my own self but I'm just really is about home stuff. It's really not about. You're just one of the kind like work stuff and way more laid-back. We'll figure it out. We'll get it done. It's a matter of what you're tuning into and what you're not tuning into Ben. I can have a full blown conversation about you right in front of you and a bridge dister and fine. You can totally talk about me. I'll never know okay. Next question is from Abigail. Abby wants to know just real quickly. What kind of blue light blocking glasses do you have? You mentioned him. Recently on the PODCAST DID. Did you just give her the nickname abbey or does it say? I know the questions I email to you. So I know they're Abigail. Abby also known as the particular blue light blocking glasses I have their clear the in the what is this called the room. The frames clear and they're worby Parker and I love them but we have a worby. Parker store here in Nashville. Are Those pretty much everywhere but the whole thing by more re- parker is you order online and they mail 'em to you so no matter where you live. You should be able to get them. But why did you make that face when I said they were Parker? I just feel like that's something I hear a lot of. Yeah I know that Amazon has some that are way cheaper on Amazon for ten bucks and they're clear frame perfect great or you can do that sorry I did. I guess worry parkers a little bit fancy but but they're nice. I mean I really like them and if you get in I would encourage if you try a pair and you're actually using them frequently like invest in a nicer pair. Yeah so maybe order the Amazon ones. This next one is from Kayla. Hey Amy I know you have expressed how Ben Dislikes you shaving your face. But does he ever mentioned if your upper lip areas fills prickly when he kisses you. I've been wanting to do it but I'm going to have to do it secretly and wanted to make sure my husband wouldn't notice so I don't know it's now it doesn't grow back any thicker or prickly or anything if you already have a prickly upper lip and that's how it's going to be but it's not just because you shave it is not going to grow back thicker. That is a myth and you should be fine. Yeah get rid of the peach fuzz go for it tinkle razor all the way speaking row quickly of tinkle. Razor Sherry wants to know. She's flying in a few weeks and was wondering if you can take the tinkle razor in your carry on. I have many times like every time. I was bobby flying somewhere and we were in the TSA line and I might. Hairdresser gave me a switchblade. I don't know I. I think I had mentioned that I wanted one. And she got me a real one and it was so nice thoughtful but I had it with me in my purse and I forgot about it and I thought I didn't want to take an up so then I went at the airport and I. May they hold it for you? You can either mail it back to yourself or there's a desk at least at the National Airport where they will hold it for you until you return so I had to pay for them to put it in a locker for me in office and then when I returned I went and got my switchblade black back. That's awesome do that either. But this bonus bonus tip also if you're into the tinkle razors available at radio dot com very true and also not affiliated with last ones from April. Hey Girl my husband and I are starting the adoption process locally here in Little Rock through foster care. I remember you mentioning on a podcast about a book that you really liked when going through the adoption process. Do you have any other book recommendations? I really appreciate it. The book was called adopted for life. And Yeah I mean my husband was not really feeling adoption at all and that was a struggle and not that he didn't think we wouldn't adopt one day but his first choice for us would be to get pregnant and which by the way. I was at the pharmacy at the store. Like I was having a by the marker when I was getting the I was over checking out something at the pharmacy and the smell weird. This is because I was like how awkward they now have at least at this grocery store. They had pregnancy tests tampons. I'm not tamas conscience pregnancy in condoms right by the pharmacy. Like where the the prescription drop off and pick up. Where you can with. The line is right. It's right there. And they have them in cases. So maybe this particular store has issue with that of those items. Yes they need to lock them up but it was like. Could you put them in a more? Because I was over there looking for some the Nelson. I felt this like guy. They're looking at them. And I thought that's Awkward Awkward. This guy is like in front of everybody looking at Newburgh. New Does or funny or feel awkward for him and I wanted to tell the store. Why are you doing this to people? I would feel awkward if I had to buy something right there. I wouldn't have left or I would wait until there was no line which could have been lying was six people deep sorrow to wander around the store and that way everywhere okay. Well because they talked up yeah because they. It's a five back back in the day when I was trying to get pregnant and I was taking test like every other day. They were not locked up. I can't speak to that piece of it but it's like it's a common like theft item. Well I agree but I never have me personally. Bought anything like that. It has not been locked up. Really pro tip right. It was Prime Amazon paying us. Say That but anyway my husband always thought we would have the baby bile like ourselves like I would get pregnant and I never got pregnant and so he wasn't. We still thought we might get pregnant so he wasn't really open to adoption when we were having to make the choice of adopting or maybe doing. Ivf like where did we want to spend our money? And I was my heart was saying adoption and his saying ivf and then he read adopted for life which is by Russell more. And it's a great book and I lurk minute like chapter one. He is like okay. I meant I mean it moved him. He was moved to tears and he was like okay. Any finish the book and he said that we can do this. Adoption is for us and now we have two beautiful. Haitian kids and fifteen minutes and fifteen seconds and that was the last question. Let's look at you and you got to tell my my pregnancy tests condom lockup stories. Not Poor Guy. I'm GonNa tell the grocery store it's fine. If you need a lock them in cases it would stop behind a glass case. They were individual cases. And then you know what I mean. So it's like you could put those anywhere in the store but they can walk out. They couldn't steal them. I mean why. Put it right by the line where people have anyway okay. I hope everyone has a great Tuesday. Don't forget our Mr Rogers quote love them. Love says they have others love yourself. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to maintain a list of online content. You'd like to enjoy. Because especially in these anxious times we can all benefit from less click, bait and more curation, and our electric reading and viewing. When you need a break, it can be fun to read an article or look at other content online. But it's easy to get lost in the black hole, mindless scrolling. You start by reading an article that interests you and then you follow one link after another. Much time can pass before you realize that you didn't plan to spend your whole morning. Looking at running skirts or catching up on every detail of the British royal family's life. These days in particular, you are definitely not planning to wallow in the details of how many face masks hospital in rural. Kansas has this sort of thing that's scary, but that you personally can do nothing about. It somehow. That's exactly what you've been doing. So. How do we avoid taking the Click Bait? In recent newsletter from character lab psychologist Dan. Willingham suggested creating a list of links to content. You really would like to enjoy on the Internet including webpages youtube channels and podcasts. I think this is a great idea. I'd recommend getting a little more granular and including links to specific articles, specific videos, specific podcast episodes and so on. Just create a simple word document on your hard drive or Google doc where you can store the links. Another option is to use the newt's APP on your phone. Maybe you can call the document worth reading or something more cheeky like avoiding the rabbit hole. Then anytime a friend sends a link to an article thinks you'd like, or you see a recipe. You WanNa check out or you hear about a Ted Talk WanNa Watch. Just pop the link into your document. When you want some light entertainment, you have a ready supply of content that you actually want to peruse. You can steer clear of Click Bait and aim for content. That's truly engaging. You don't need to let algorithms dictate your Internet consumption. You can create your own viewing in a thoughtful way. And once you've used the links. Just delete them, so your list is always fresh. Right now my list includes Yomas songs for Comfort Project Poems by Tracy K Smith on a transition website. Emily oster Ted talk about things. Parents should consider before going back to work and a New York Times article with writers descriptions of that bring them comfort, and yes, there are some cute photos of royal children. This doesn't all have to be highbrow. But if you're aiming to spend less time scrolling mindlessly, you might WanNa try this to. Carry your Internet use by creating document of links. You really do want to explore. You'll probably be less anxious and more informed, too. And maybe save money from not doing so much online shopping. In the meantime, this is Laura. Bag It's a great way to save time and money and to avoid finding yourself hungry or eating too much junk food. We've all been there when a meeting ran long unexpected traffic slowed us down or an awkward schedule left. No time to grab lunch then. There are the times when despite dining on schedule. We're just craving snack. It can be tempting to go to the coffee shop around the corner. But by the time me put on your coat walkover wait for your order. Then walk back and regain your focus if probably spent at least twenty minutes and five dollars or more on that quick coffee and Muffin and break that time and money better spent unintentional coffee break with a colleague rather than a desperate food. Run because you need a snack of course if you avoid the coffee shop it's easy to fall into a not much better alternative going to a vending machine or rating the Candy Bowl on a colleague's desk that may require less time and money but your choices probably won't be healthy. A better approach is to pack a snack bag. Ideally containing haning foods with some protein. And not too much sugar. You WanNa avoid the crash after the sugar high wears off some options for your snack bag or almonds or other nuts A protein bar celery sticks and on the go peanut butter and apple raisins beef Jerky or anything reasonably portable not too messy and a million preschoolers can't be wrong. Sometimes goldfish or Graham crackers can hit the spot to in a recent. NPR Life podcast. Judas Matt's was interviewed about intuitive twitter. That makes a lot of sense carrying carrot sticks sticks and sunflower seeds. May seem like a great idea until you're craving something sweet or smooth and nothing in your snack bag hits spot so said depending on your general cravings you might have a routine of carrying something salty. Something sweet something crunchy and something smooth to satisfy whatever taste east and texture. You happen to be in the mood for when you get hungry. One day. If you subscribe to before breakfast, you'll be getting an extra helping me for the next two weeks I just launched a new podcast, called the new corner office and be sharing a few episodes in your feed starting today, so look for that and be sure to subscribe. See never miss a tip that will take your day from great to awesome. Good Morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to reduce your chores. Don't reschedule. I read a lot of time management literature, and over the years. I've noticed something. A lot of tips that purport to save time are really just about moving work to some other time. Now granted sometimes the day can be more frenetic than others, and maybe it's helpful to spread the work around. The so called calmer mornings or evenings that these tips promise come at a high cost of recreation or rest. For instance meal prepping all afternoon on Sundays may make your weeknights lighter, maybe but at the cost of a big chunk of your weekend. Selecting your own and your kids closed for the week on Sunday still takes time even if it's not during the weekday morning rush, it may actually take more time on the weekend since he might be quicker about it in the mornings when you have to look presentable by a m. Many! Kids are home from school these days, but when they go back. Would you rather pack lunches after your kids go to bed or curl up in front of the fire with your spouse era? Good Book. When you rescheduled tours. You wind up pushing them into. What could be leisure time? or You decide to still have your leisure time after doing the chores and you go to bed too late. grumpy mornings are never call mornings. Even if you laid out, outfits made lunches and otherwise followed all that questionable advice. Rescheduling chores also creates another problem. You might move chores to times when other family members don't see them. You might also ended up doing work that other people could do. I'm particularly thinking about children here. If kids can't see your hard work well, it's like the lunch varies created the sandwiches with faces on them and decorated the homemade. Cookies magically show up in their lunchboxes and well. It would be nice if there were lunch varies, there aren't. Nor. Are there ferries who magically cleaned the kitchen and pick up the toys every night? Let's hope kids don't learn this for the first time when they're running their own households. Also to be honest sometimes. In the household persist in believing in these ferries to. It you do all the meal prep on Sundays this implies that feeding your household is your job and your job alone. Unless your family has a specific agreement on chores with other parties fully responsible for equally time consuming work. Here why this would be the case? Better to reduce chores rather than rescheduled them. Consider, whether all household tasks are worth doing. Rather than doing meal prep on weekends, you can just make simpler meals during the week you can order in wants to to lower the burden. Rather than making lunches when kids are back in school, you can have them. Start buying lunch or making their own lunches. You can streamline your clothes and let kids where what they want. You can recognize those toys scattered all over the living room are just going to come out again the next morning, so there is zero benefit and losing leisure time in order to pick them up. Rescheduling chores doesn't save time. Reducing them does so whenever. That's an option probably better to go with that. Have you found ways to reduce your chores rather than rescheduling them. Make time for delight
They're delicate and Krispy with luxuriously rich chocolate in the middle. You really want to keep these just for you. Everyone else can go get their own stack, so remember to save something for yourself with Pepperidge Farm Milano. Welcome to before breakfast a production of IHEART radio. Good Morning! This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to make time for liked. The point of time management is to build a meaningful fulfilling light. And part of that occasionally, pausing to savor the delightful moments that life offers up. Yes you have time. Indeed these moments of delight can make you feel like time is more abundant. I was thinking of this a few months ago during the predinner bustle when my twelve year old son suddenly said, hey, check out that sunset. I looked out the window and how it was indeed spectacular. It was still winter then and grey bare trees framed the pink and orange hues of waning light. We paused and stared for a while through the kitchen window, and then out on our cold back porch. This moment of reverence didn't take long just a minute or two. But it was a reminder of this planet's rhythms and the extravagant beauty. That is there if you pay attention. We can find a light in all sorts of places if we're open to it. Maybe it's an unusual flower an a neighbor's yard. A bright red cardinal stopping by a bird feeder. The sound of bells or wind chime. When in doubt lean in close. Even trees passed. A Hundred Times might offer up an interesting mottled pattern on its trunk. Or if you're looking for man-made, delight thinks small. Lots of people find tiny things. Delightful, newborn close dollhouse furniture supplies for building model airplanes. Look for photos of these things online or pull up the tiny onesies that are still in your attic. For other delightful ideas look through photo books. You haven't paged through in a while or through photos of previous vacations on your phone. Engage all your senses. Really enjoy that I bitter sip of strong coffee. Take a deep with of the vanilla extract. Use Baking. Listen to a recording of an opera. or The stirring orchestration of a movie soundtrack. And of course, put yourself in places or delight might happen. There are many reasons to build little adventures into life even in these days of social distancing. Whether it's a lunchtime, walk or a trip to an international grocery store. But the opportunity for delight is a big one. In any case the next time you noticed something, beautiful or unexpected. Pause! Savor it. Don't rush past and your determination to get from one thing to the next. Instead realize that you weren't going to do much profound in those extra thirty seconds anyway. You have time to linger. Indeed slowing down naturally stretches out our enjoyment of things. And, we feel like more of our time is spent joyfully. We feel like we have more time. What delights you I'd love to hear about your experiences taking time for delight. You can reach me at before breakfast podcast. At IHEARTMEDIA DOT com. In the meantime. This is Laura. Seven W M Z Q in Washington DC or wherever the rotates you on the iheartradio APP. What up you guys so today. I'm talking about corona virus amid weak mom chat because it is literally all everyone is talking about. I've had to stop watching good morning. America and the news because freaks me out. I literally have never been afraid of viruses or the flu or anything like this now. Just like the world is shutting down. I still don't really know. The difference between chronic buyers in flu. I know this is serious. I know that this is Clearly what are they calling a pandemic or it's affecting the entire world. I do not remember ever living through something like this. It's making me feel like the Zombie. Apocalypse is going to happen like all of a sudden. You know when you watch walking dead you get. The virus turned into Zombie and then the world starts to come to an end. That's how I feel and I'm not making light of this. I know this is a big deal. I'm just trying to and I'm not a doctor. This is just me talking about crony virus talking to you guys about it. Because it's all anybody's talking about I just want to know what goes feelings are about it and how you are staying positive how you're not letting this affect you in like such a negative way that you can't live your life Personally my husband and I. We travel a lot for our jobs. Michael is going to Europe right now to play. Cd which is a country music festival which hasn't been shut down Another shutting excel by South West. A postponed stagecoach all sorts of festivals are getting postponed or cancelled. And I mean Michael just got on a plane and go to Europe today when the world of shutting down and I might what do you do? Can you just stop living your life? Because you're scaring get corona virus. I mean you could literally get anywhere so even if you're hiding out at your house what if you're getting food delivered and the person who delivered your food. Hey Corona virus. I mean I don't know I just don't know how you can hide from it and I don't know how you can stop your life especially when your life is one that involves you should travel unless they call like in the United States unless they do like forced shutdown like they have done in other places where you have to like. Stay in your house like lockdown. It's just crazy this is crazy and I just don't know what the difference between the flu is because so many people have the flu every year. And we just go on living our lives right okay. So I'M GONNA run through some of your responses on how you're staying positive win. The world is being swept with so much fear. Okay Wash your hands and sneeze into your elbow totally about washing your hands. My question is when you sneeze into your elbow. Don't you get all the germs and your elbow and then do the germ stay live or when everyone seizes into their elbows. And you've got to hug someone. Are you passing the germs? That way I always wonder that I don't know so y'all let me know after this. I next person says I'm seeing positive because I know it's over hyped. More people have died of influenza. This year I agree like so. Many died of the flu had the flu but yet were not really scared of the flu are we. Are we here to the flu? And now we're just more safe. Current IVARS are we. I don't know Only listening to the sea to the C. C. and doctors not the median hearsay. That's smart lots of good smelling hand. Soap So and also knowing that h one n one previous pandemic. Oh yes okay was at the bird flu. H One one previous pandemic. I never knew anyone personally affected by them. Try so no says trying to nor the news. Faith over fear wash hands. Don't pay attention to the media hype says just making sure my immune system is supported taking silver D. three garlic and on guard The flu when all says the flu is killing way. More people someone else says keeping mental health in check. Happy Grateful Harper. What is good and I am healthy. Someone else said I think to myself. Children and babies are rarely affected and have the most mild cases that is a blessing that children babies are really affected but baby children. Babies are affected by the flu. I mean I have a couple of friends who their babies got the flu and RSV and I mean that's terrifying Someone else says not watching the news. They make it scarier that it needs to be someone else says more people die from obesity and we keep coming out with Dorito flavors and soda flavors. I mean that is true. We keep filling our body with fake food and fake drinks. That are killing ourselves intentionally. Like you know like preservatives and all sorts of stuff that we eat in our foods and put it on our products and that's a good point Thankful I have insurance job with time off and can afford co pays no other illnesses. It's hard to stay positive with having little ones please share dacians okay. I think we're almost saying like I'm trying to share your thoughts because I don't know how to navigate it honestly and especially like the jobs that I do are around people. I'm starting to do a lot more. Live podcast which involve audiences. What do you do? Do you just stop doing your job and your life. I mean I. I don't know it's happening. Across the world. People are shutting. Down tons of people are working from home. But what if you have one of those jobs? That doesn't I mean a lot of my job allows them to work from home but then another big part of my job doesn't allow me to work from home and very like very social when it comes to doing live podcasts. So and then. My husband's job. He's in a band doing concert. So it's like. I don't know how to handle it. Like what do we do? I don't feel like anyone's just paying. You'd have time off if you're staying home. Because of the fear of the corona virus. So it's like how do you keep your income coming in? I mean okay washing your hands sing. Happy Birthday twice. I guess that's how long you wash your hands. Not Touching your face. I just realized I bit off every single in my earlier because I was dressed with flu and krona great good job but I do wash my hands all the time The media hypes up the negative and not the positive. But why don't we have toilet paper? Sit good point. I mean people are stocking up like it's the world's GonNa shut down. I mean I'm not GonNa say I didn't get a few extra supplies from the store that don't that are nonperishable. Just in case the main worth the what if the store shuts down you know I mean truly who knows So and says I'm a pharmacist. Regardless of what happens I know my patients will need me. That is true. And you are the one who's probably coming in contact with people who are the sickest so bless you thank you not watching the media washing my hands staying healthy in ways. I can control. Don't buy into the hype. It only causes panic and fear Just trying not to engage in all the media frenzy but also being realistic. I can get behind that. I feel like that's where I'm sitting right now is I'm trying not to engage in all the media frenzy. I actually like I said earlier in this broadcast. I'm actually not watching the news right now. Just because every second on the news there is a new case of. There's a new. Sorry my phone's beeping. There's a new case of frigging corona virus in like Michael. Just had to go to Boston For a quick trip to Boston and he flew to Boston and back and then of course they say oh Nashville now has its first case of krona came from Boston. The Guy who has krona was traveling from Boston Nashville. Michael jested that flight. Like a few days before or after. I can't remember that new headline news and I'm like Oh my gosh. So and someone else says ignore them ignore the media news and only follow the CDC website. Focus on facts over fear. Tonal says drowning myself in pure L. These are. I mean I with you guys on all this stuff because it's all like guessing I mean we don't know how to hide from it. You can't hide from this like this is how I this is how I feel like right now. My Wife told my sister the other day. It's like I'm either GONNA have a nervous breakdown arm and have total freedom. Experience like me. They're gonNA like free myself from fear or I'm GONNA have a nervous breakdown because the corona virus is freaking me out can't go anywhere can't touch anything. Don't WanNa be around people you if anyone's sick and then it takes a little while to show up so even if you are around. People seem healthy. Maybe they just haven't shown symptoms. Yeah I mean you can just worry yourself into a state of pure panic and I have done that and then of course like with sunny. I'm trying to protect her from everything and trying to set up our lives so she safe and do the best you can. And then you're sitting in your bed asleep and you hear a Tornado Siren. Go off at twenty five at night and a tornado. Hits your neighborhood one street over so I'm like what do we do? How do we live? How do you just have to have some faith? Hey Alkaline Hobby here. Where was I I was talking about how you can just try to protect your kids so much and then all these things that you're doing to be safe trying to protect yourself Trying to wash your hands trying to avoid germs trying to do. I don't know be a good person trying to serve your community all these things that we're trying to trying to do trying to do wanting to help I'm rambling. I'm going off. But like and then all of a sudden you're sleeping you're taught forty five at night and a frigging tornado comes through your neighborhood. One street over. And it's like part of me in this is just me? This is just my opinion and this is definitely not telling any of you guys to adopt this opinion. Pardon me though is at this place where I was saying either. Oh Yeah I remember. I was GONNA have a breakdown or a breakthrough or like total freedom. I can't worry about stuff anymore. Like I have been worrying so much and I have the best husband ever. He was so great. Who's like Carolyn? You're always trying in a loving way. He was telling me this. Usually you're always like trying to overcome some anxiety that you're going through and he was like. I want to help you with that. Because look at your life and you have so much to be thankful and grateful for and instead of focusing on things that you're just so fearful about really focus on what you're blessed with and a really really took that to heart because I have so many blessings. I have a child that I prayed for and she's healthy and I have a husband who I love. We both are able to pursue careers that were passionate about My family's healthy Michael's family is healthy. I have friends that I love that love me. I'm going to community of people in Nashville. That are amazing. I'm like literally house a roof over my head. My House didn't get blown away from the tornado. I literally have to be ingratitude. And because all sit around and I think about every single thing that is going wrong in the world that is sad in the world of suffering in the world everything that can happen in the world. Everyone who is without in the world everyone who I'll create stories for all the pain and the world and I will just live in them and that's not helpful it. What is helpful is for me to actually help where I can where I feel drawn to help help where I my heart beats like whatever I feel like. My heart is like crawling crying out for. That's where I need help. I can't help every single person in this world. Neither can you. None of us can. We are not equipped to save the world. We are not God. We're not Jesus but we are equipped to do is serve our community and serve where we called and said that is what I keep tying God. I literally keep singing this to God every day when I'm holding sunny on like Lord Sorry amnestying for you guys. I'm just GONNA try to not even think about the fact that I'm seeing. I don't really see that much more public but I just think Llegado Day Lord The Way Lord Guy. The Way Lord Guy Look good the way look guy look the way Lord Guy. The Way Guy. Do we look the way? Lord God a Lewd Guy. I just seen that over and over and over and over again till sunny bald asleep and I mean it from the bottom of my heart. I cannot stress out anymore. I have to close the chapter on having constant anxiety and I'm ready to get myself. Grace having a new baby anyone who's walked through that with me. I mean some people don't have anxiety but a lot of women especially struggle with postpartum anxiety. I know I have had so much anxiety. And I'm at this place where I am surrendering my life. Sonny's life Michael's life everyone's life over to the higher good higher force. I am going to trust my gut instincts. I am going to follow my intuition. I'm going to try to stay as in constant contact and communication with God as I can in constant prayer and by doing that. That means listening to my gut listening to my intuition listening to the Five Fif- like that nauseous. Feeling inside of me. Don't move for don't do it if I feel like it's the wrong move doesn't feel good. It feels wrong. I'm not going to do it. I am just going to trust my gut. And that's how I'M GONNA. That's how I personally. This is for me not for anyone else. Y'All do what you WANNA do. Because someone has once said. Don't take her she's not a medical professional. I am not a medical professional. I am not even close to medical professional professional. I would never claim to be that. This is me and my honest. Honestly my spiritual walk that I'm sharing with all but I am trusting my intuition and I am literally praying to God all the time to guide the way and I'm just going to follow the path. That feels easy and calm and right. That doesn't mean when I say easy. I don't mean it's not going to be hard work and I don't have a task to like things to do. It's not like oh I'm just GONNA kick back on a lounge share. That's not what I mean by. Easy does mean by the Rhode fills easy like if heels joyful fills light. It feels good and that also doesn't mean there's not going to be ways for me to serve on that road. There's not going to be hardship and pain but it's going to flow into my life and that is how I know what is meant for me and where I'm supposed to serve and we're I'm supposed to walk because if I'm sitting here listening in the media listening to the news listening to instagram listening to facebook listening to all of the sources out there that are just feeding me. Fear fear fear. Fear fear fear fear. The world is on fire everything. Exploding people are dying. Don't travel don't leave your house. Babies are sick Everyone's endanger literally paralyzes me and I'm not gonNA live that life. I have today. I'm living in the present moment and today is a good day for me. I am blessed today tomorrow. I will deal with what tomorrow brings but today I'm willing to enjoy the blessings of my life. I'M NOT GONNA in make believe I'm not GonNa make up stories. That aren't real that are based on fear. I am going to live in this moment. And that is how I am going to navigate corona virus. If I get a weird feeling about going to some event I'm not GonNa go if I don't get a weird feeling about going to. I'm going to go if I all of a sudden feel like. I just don't want to meet someone for lunch because I just feel like it's not just feels like the wrong thing to do for me at that moment I'm GonNa Cancel. I'm just going to do what I feel like. I need to do unapologetically as talking to my friend the other day. She's a pharmacist. And she's around all the sick patients and all the people all the time and she said she has really learned how to stand in her self and like for what she feels is right for her and like sometimes someone will WanNa come in for a hug or be more like touchy than she wants to be and she'll just be like. I'm sorry I'm not comfortable with that just into sentence. This is the full complete sentence right there. I'm sorry I'm not comfortable with that. I don't have to explain myself. I can just say I'm not comfortable with that. I have this need to please where it's like. I feel like I have to make sure everyone's happy and like I need to make sure you're happy in your feelings aren't hurt. But she said if you somebody is GonNa get abandoned and it's either going to be. You're going to abandon that person a stranger and what they're what you're assuming they want or you're going to abandon yourself and what you feel like yourself needs and I was like wow one way or the other. You're abandoning someone and honestly. I don't even know that story. That other person Yes am. I made me feel awkward to say like no and I have to do that. Was Sunny too late. Sometimes people like want to hold sunny and touch sunny and I'll just sort of let them. I'm not comfortable with that so I just need to be like. I'm sorry I'm she's not. I'm not when people hold right now. It's flu season and we're just. We're just not doing that right now. In the sentence in a story done I don't have to explain myself but I feel like I have to make sure that other person's happy and I just don't and I really was inspired by what she said that if she didn't feel comfortable that she said I don't feel comfortable with it and she's like yes. It's awkward in the beginning and yes you feel awkward but then used to it and I'm like down for that I'm down for that. I'm that is what I'm working on in. This season is trusting my instincts learning in the Sam not comfortable with things saying no and then if I get a feeling that that unveil right don't do that. I'm just not going to do it so that time dealing with krona virus personally and then. Obviously I'M GOING TO WASH MY HANDS. I mean but here's the thing I mean I. I had to go on an airplane to do stuff the life that I live the jobs that we live like I told you michaels on an airplane right now so I would say be smart and be saved which to me. Being safe is going and public huge places in airplanes but like. I don't know if I can promise I won't be able to do that so I'm just going to have to do the best I can and I think that's all we can do. Okay so people were telling me the difference between the flu and Corona. Someone's someone's that. It seems that the flu is much more serious for babies. That's how I feel. I thought the flu very serious in babies actually catch the flu where they don't seem to be catching corona Had the differences respiratory issues corona is like the flu with the Monja Someone told me I think you're great. Obviously since I follow you but stop this is this is spreading misinformation. Well okay too late. Sorry I did have said this over and over again. I'm not a doctor. I'm not trying to spread misinformation. I'm trying to get some clarity and talk about it So don't take any of this for facts you guys. I'm not trying to present the suspects. I hope you'll know that I'm just trying to have a conversation. About how our saying positive to stay above the fear and the frenzy of the Krona Virus Now this second filling all weird see I now feel weird that I'm talking about the krona virus so I just want to know I'm not trying to be a doctor or give information the actual point of this conversation that I'm having all is to try not to be so fear based with everything happening in the world because it's a really hard place to live when we're just plagued by fear Okay so maybe I'll stop asking stop talking about the difference in the flu and the Krona and Yoga figured that out on your own now because Brooke has made me feel second guessing myself about all this hope. This conversation has enlightened you guys I'M GONNA say it one more time because I like to beat it at horse. I'm not trying to be a doctor. I'm not trying to spread misinformation. I just want us to figure out how to live a joyful life in the midst of a pandemic that is happening in the world because I think we need a little hope. We need a little joy. I think we need to be safe. I think we need to try the best we can. It's hard to be perfectly safe because these I mean. How do you hide from something that you can't see and it's everywhere I mean? Truly it could be anywhere so wash your hands try to stay out of crowds but then again if you can't then just try to just do your best fresher intuition. Try to shake hands and not be near people who sneeze on you but then also try to live your life and enjoy your life and don't live in constant fear because I do think the fear makes everything worse and I do think fear. I think. Fear just fuels just fuels this fuels pandemic in a way. That's just not healthy and I just don't. I think we need to figure out how to enjoy our lives in the midst of disease to because we still have a lot to be thankful for so I would encourage you all to take a minute and just have some gratitude go through some things in your life that you're really thankful for Gr- go through through a mental list of what brings you joy. Get outside if you can breathe. Some fresh air. Make a phone call to a friend who haven't talked to in a while and catch up now. Let's just try to spread some love and get some good love? Second Cup: Plan your weeks on Fridays
"Hey listeners look sometimes along then. Yoga class isn't in the cards, so maybe a cookie is. Pepperidge Farm Milano believes you should make some time for yourself once in a while. I like to go hide in my home. Office with the snack occasionally, and while people find me eventually. At least it's good for a few minutes. Milano cookies are truly a treat worthy of your. They're delicate and Krispy with luxuriously rich chocolate in the middle. You really want to keep these just for you. Everyone else can go get their own stack, so remember to save something for yourself with Pepperidge Farm Lonzo. Good morning this is Laura. Today's tip is to plan your weeks on Fridays. So this will probably not surprise you, but I like to plan. Okay Fine I love to plan. There is nothing more than sitting down to plan what I'm going to do with myself. What my family members are going to do with themselves. Shockingly, my family members don't always go along with these plans. Imagine that must be fun to be married to parented by me. Anyway just because you're planning doesn't mean you're doing it in the most effective way. A few years ago, I made a change in how I plan. That has really made a difference in my life and might be helpful for you as well. So to start my story a long long time ago, I read the late Stephen Covey's book. The seven habits of highly effective people. It's really great book if you haven't read it. He talks about planning your life in weeks and I think this is really smart. Weeks are the cycle of life as we actually live it. Not Days I mean what's a typical day for you? Is it Tuesday or is it Saturday? They. Both occurred just as often and they both have the same number of hours, but I'm guessing they look pretty different for you. Weeks give you an accurate picture. So after reading seven habits, I started sitting down on Sunday evenings and planning the upcoming week. Then a few years after that I got the chance to interview David Allen. A lot of listeners of this podcast probably know him as the author of getting things done. That's also a great book. I mentioned my Sunday planning to him. And he told me that a lot of his clients reviewed and planned their weeks on Fridays. So I decided to try Fridays and specifically Friday afternoons. I'm a big fan of the. Sunday planning is great, but Friday. Afternoon is even better. Here's why. I I. Don't know about you, but Friday afternoon is not exactly my peak productivity time. I'm usually doing nothing of consequence by Friday afternoon. I am sliding into the weekend. I'm not answering my phone I'm hiding out, so no one can find me. It is really hard. Start anything new on Friday afternoon. But I can usually summon the energy to think about what future me should be doing, and by taking a few minutes on Friday afternoon to plan the week ahead I turn. What would have been wasted time into some of my most productive minutes of the week? Friday planning also gives me better weekends in two wits. I even if you love your job, you can always feel a little bit of day trepidation. You know what this is. There's like an avalanche of work waiting for you on Monday, but you don't know exactly what our know how you're gonNA deal with it? If you make a plan on Sunday night. Will you've spent much of the weekend cohabitating with that sense of unease? If you plan Monday morning on Friday though well. You've got a plan, so you don't have to spend your weekend worrying about it. And just as a side note if this plan involves meeting with people making your plan on Friday means that you can call or email them. They're probably still at their desks, so they'll respond. which might not be the case if you try and get in touch with them on Sunday night? Second. Haven't thought about your weekend, Friday. Planning gives you a chance to call friends. Make reservations buy tickets whatever you need to do. This vastly increases the chances that your weekends are awesome rather than forgettable. So, if you plan on Fridays and I hope you will just take a few minutes to think about the week ahead. Make yourself a short. Three category priority list. Career. Relationships self. Making a three category list reminds us that you should put something in all three categories is pretty hard to make a three category list and then leave one of the categories blank. So that right, there is GonNa to have a more balanced life, but anyway just a short list two to three items in each. Look at the next week. See where they can go. In. Just like that, you're putting first things first in your life. I think Stephen. Covey would approve of that. This is Laura. Thanks for listening and here's to making the most of our time. Second Cup: Create a List of 100 Dreams
"Hey listeners look sometimes along then. Yoga class isn't in the cards, so maybe a cookie is. Pepperidge Farm Milano believes you should make some time for yourself once in a while. Everyone else can go get their own stack, so remember to save something for yourself with Pepperidge Farm Lonzo. Good morning, this is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to make a list of one hundred dreams. When it comes to time management, a lot of people think it's all about saving bits of time here and there, and so the Internet is full of these kinds of tips I will confess that I read these tips like everybody else hoping going to find hours in the day that I didn't know existed. But then it's always stuff like clean the shower while you're in it. Or One of my favorites, which somebody said all seriousness is that if you send a lot of emails for the Answers O. K.? Type K. instead of okay. Because I. Know The only thing keeping me from greatness as typing the letter all my emails, right? If you think about it, it's kind of silly. We don't build the lives we want by saving time. We build the lives we want, and then time saves itself. I think it's so much more effective to think about what we want to spend more time doing. What great things would we like to put into our lives? The best way to answer that question. is to make a list. Many years ago, career coach Caroline's Levin Sheridan exercise with me that she calls the list of one hundred dreams. This is a completely unedited list of anything. You WanNa do or have in life it can be travel, goals or hobbies or things. You'd like to do with your family, maybe professional goals to. You can think of it as like a bucket list, but most people's bucket lists don't have one hundred items on there. It's actually really hard to get to one hundred. The first third is pretty easy, because most people want to travel more, so they put the thirty three countries. They WANNA visit. After that. It gets more complicated. RANDOM ITEMS I've put on my list over the years have included visiting the Greek islands, seeing Perth, Australia building and furnishing a doll house with my daughter, reading a collection of Sonnets, getting a good rain, jacket and singing performance of Bach's B minor mass. You'll probably have to come back to this list several times don't second. Guess your answers. You not actually holding yourself to any of this and you don't have to show it to anyone, either though you can if you want, it's just fun to think about things you want to spend more time doing. You'll learn more about yourself. And about what makes you feel excited and energized? Because here's the thing I. Promise Pretty Much. Everybody has some discretionary time in their lives. Unfortunately if you're building a career and raising a family, this free time seldom comes gift-wrapped and obvious. It doesn't always look like a day at the SPA. Instead it appears as an hour after the kids go to bed. Or when you're waiting for the Carpool to bring them home from soccer practice. Or maybe it's a half day on the weekend. When the groceries are bought and swim, meet is done. because. We think we don't have free time. We don't ask what we'd like to do with it. So, in free time does appear. We spend it in the most effortless ways possible. scrolling, around, online. Watching TV or puttering around the house, doing housework doesn't really need to be done. With a list of one hundred dreams though you get ideas. If! I've got an open our. I can write a draft of sonnet. On a weekend afternoon I could find a doll furniture store and go visit. Then, this time will feel more rejuvenating. Then if I lose it to stuff I, don't care about. So at some point today start making your list of one hundred dreams. Maybe, you can get to twenty five over your lunch break. Maybe you can add fifteen more tonight. Or maybe he'll surprise me and get all the way to one hundred. Love to hear how far you get. Love to hear what you put on there to. Feel, free to send me your lists at before breakfast podcast at iheartmedia dot com. In the meantime this is Laura. Thanks for listening and here's to making the most of our time. Hey everybody I'd love to hear from you. You can send me your tips your questions or anything else. Everybody I hope y'all are having a great week. I definitely changed my attitude this week. I feel like last week with my first week of working and home schooling. The kids in different things and I was a little Debbie Downer about it not GonNa lie because I just felt a little overwhelmed and I thought this is Nutso. What is happening? I can't handle this. This is crazy and then you know my husband. I took his advice and I stopped looking at it. As how am I going to survive this? Or we're surviving not thriving which I still love that saying by the way. But he's like no. Let's not survive list. Let's live this. This is our new normal right now. This is our life. How are we gonNA live it and be the best version of ourselves for us and for our kids? So my attitude. This week has been a lot better and I must say it's really really helped Before we get into the four things that we're going to talk about in today's episode. I want to share with Y'all Marian. I decided we're GonNa do something cool for four things totes. The customized ones for Mother's Day. So when it comes to our health care heroes for things items. The shirt and the toad say a scrubs on caffeinate wash hands repeats for an the donations are going. We still are supporting Haiti. We always have with anything for things. Because that's under our S- Pauline but for the first time ever or supporting Medical efforts here in the United States were working with director relief. An organization that's delivering p. p. e. two hospitals. That need it big time so first of all super happy that we're able to do that and come alongside some of these groups that are helping out. It's amazing and still send support to Haiti but we have a code for healthcare. Heroes if you happen to be in the healthcare world and you want to buy one of those you can use the code hero. And that's a little discount code for you when you purchase it and we decided let's do the same thing for MOMS for mother's Day for a week so starting today. Which is Thursday April ninth? When you're listening to this until Thursday April sixteenth. We'll have a discount code for four things coats for Mother's Day. The customized ones so. That's what the code will be good for in. The code is going to be mom so we thought yeah. If we're doing a hero code seems pretty easy. We should be able to do a mom code. And it'll be for this week only so if you want a discount on that. And you want to customize a tote for your mom for mother's Day then start thinking of her four things and put them on a tote you can order it safely from Your House online and then we will deliver it to her. Because odds are I don't know if a lot of us will be seeing family members for Mother's Day. I guess it just depends on what the dynamic of your family is but Yeah you can still get your mom something and I get. A lot of people may not be shopping right now. Given the current state of the world but the odds are you probably. We're GONNA get your Mama Mother's Day gift so we thought this might help out a little bit. And if you don't want to customize a toe we have other items that still give back we've got our star necklace which a lot of moms like or four things gratitude journal or Zip Pouches. We have cool mom we just Restocked a bunch of cool MOMS stuff and adding cool mom tie-dye t so super pumped about that in any of this stuff you can always find it by just going to Radio. Dot Com. And it'll take you to anything a spa four things pimp and joy all of that stuff because I get emails. All is that's exaggerating but I do get emails saying I can't remember the website. Go to to shop. But if you know you're listening to me and I'm amy and then I'm Radio. Amy On social media than just remember Radio. Dot Com and. It should get you there and. I'm pretty sure that Lincoln my bio on my instagram takes you to radio DOT COM as well so if you're not following me on Instagram. My handle is at Radio. Amy and something. I put up On instagram this week was my old silent film. Video called Bacon where I gave birth to a baby pig. So if you're looking for something to watch a little entertainment I pulled that out of the vault. It came up because my daughter's Ashira. She wants a pick and for her birthday. It's like in a couple of weeks and I would love nothing more than for us to have a pig. I wanted a pig. Ever since I made that video and I went to a pig farm to borrow a baby little teacup piglet to put my movies so I could give birth to it and then B. It's mom for a little bit and which the you'll have to watch silent films understand. Why did it but it was first silent film festival and by the way I won first place. It was a bobby bones. Show Silent Film Festival. The whole show competed and we have listeners. Compete we had judges brought in like outside judges and my film one but anyway back to the pigs to share a once it and then it made me think of this video so I thought I would throw it up on instagram. And I started thinking of other videos in the vault. I might need to bust out especially during this corona virus time because people are looking for content to distract them from life. Like I really think I should put up our hunger games trailer. There was a time after I read the books. I got obsessed and I made the whole show and my whole family. Everybody reenact the hunger games trailer line for line by scene and we shot the whole thing and put it up as a trailer and I got to play cavernous ever dean. Of course so maybe. I'll put that up in the coming days. So yeah make sure you're following me radio me and then. I also run the shop as SPA ACCOUNT WITH WHICH IS S. H. O. P. E. S. P. W. A. And that's where you'll find all the four things stuff in any of our other shopping spa items and up there. I'll be loading up commercial that my family did recently for Mother's Day totes. We did our own little. You know funny totally cheesy. I don't know that it's funny but it's definitely cheesy because we made it at home and it's nothing awesome but it is our own little commercial and my kids are in it. My husband and me and Mary so hopefully that will release soon. And y'all that'll be something they all can enjoy okay so just wanted to make sure you all knew about the mom discount code for Mother's Day but that's again it's just from this Thursday to next Thursday for the discount so make sure if you WanNa Order Your Mama. Four things tote that you go ahead and do that. Mother's Day is a four weeks away or something. I think this Sunday. It'll be four weeks and that's nothing because by the time you get this made and we get it printed and shipped. I mean you'll just have an entire. You'll feel good about it. Something you can check off your list which. I'm loving checking things off my list lately. Like that's help helping to keep me sane so when it comes to lists. I will give you are speaking of less. I guess I should say I'll give you a list of the things we're GONNA cover today. The first thing is going to be healthcare hero. Shout out that's something I'm GonNa Start doing in every episode for the near future So if y'all know a well just listening you'll you'll hear what I decided. I'm going to do in that. The second thing is how Easter can still happen. Even if you're stuck at home the third thing is I've got some coffee thoughts for you. That you know is a text that my sister and I Text exchange that I had with my sister and I thought I would share some of these coffee thoughts with you next time. You sipped coffee. You can think about what she shared with me. And then the fourth thing is. Are you a helicopter cleaner? If you don't know what that is You'll hear about it in the fourth thing and at the end that I share a Dolly parton quote. That's definitely good to have during these crazy times. And then of course at the end of the episode. I'll do an email shoutout always and if you'll have emails for me thoughts questions whatever make sure you send those into four things with Amy Brown at g mail dot Com all right. Here's the first thing for this first thing today. I want to feature a front line worker and this happens to be Stephanie. You may be remember me telling you about her on pimp enjoy episode back in December the episode that we had an honor of my mom's birthday. She's a nurse and her husband has brain cancer and because she's a nurse. She actually had to move her husband and her kids in with her inlaws until this passes due to her potentially being exposed and she wasn't even able to be with her son at his birthday. Which you know. This is heavy stuff to take in. But it just shows the inspiring commitment that healthcare workers have on the front line. And I just want to share with. Y'All some of the posts that I saw she put on facebook just to honor Stephanie. And a lot of you out there. That are like Stephanie. We are with you. We are thinking of you. We are praying for you. We are so so grateful for you but I want y'all to hear these words from Stephanie. So that way you can keep health workers in your thoughts and prayers and you can maybe even reach out to some if you know of any and make sure that you're you're there for them and their family. So this is what Stephanie put up not too long ago. Doing the right thing is not always easy and fact tonight. It was much harder than I anticipated. We made the decision to send Jeff in the kids to my inlaws for hopefully a brief period of time the risk that I potentially posted. Jeff is a lot to carry and it's heavy. We're already in a fight for his life and it wouldn't be fair to risk adding another brick to some. It may seem like an easy solution to just step back from my duties as a nurse but this is what we were called to do as a nurse or healthcare provider. We show up and let me tell you the nurses and staff that I am so incredibly blessed to work with. They show up every day without hesitation. We're used to things changing but since this virus showed up things are changing by the minute and we continue to work through the challenges for our patients and for each other and I would want someone to do the same for my husband so they gave me goosebumps to read. T all because yeah. That's why she is showing up because she knows if her family were to need it she would want the people that were called to help and studied to help. And that have the wisdom and the knowledge to help get us through this and the compassion and I mean I don't know there's like so many ways to describe healthcare providers but all of the amazing qualities that they have we need them to show up and we are so thankful that they have and then here is another post that Stephanie put up about her son's birthday and I shared this post with. You just said that you can keep in mind just the number of sacrifices that different people are making. She put up happy seventh birthday to this sweet boy of mine. He makes us proud every single day. He's determined kind sensitive and loving his. He's his sister's protector. And one of the silliest kids I know and he's still got his love for Ku. My heart is broken that I can't spend the stay with you or hug you tight. I know that you will be loved and spoiled beyond measure as a Mama. These are the sacrifices you make for your loved ones. I hope you look back on this day with joy and magical memories and know just how loved you are happy birthday and so that was to her son and Yeah just wanted to highlight Stephanie. And maybe that'll be a thing that I can start adding into each four things episode. Is I take a moment to highlight a healthcare worker out there. If y'all know of any please send them to me. Four things with Amy Brown at G MAIL DOT COM and. I'd love to start featuring some people that are out there on the front lines. Thank you Stephanie. And thank you all healthcare providers. Oh I guess I should say healthcare heroes especially to go along with our four things line that is supporting them and then. I think that's what we'll do for each person that I get to feature I will marry an. I'll send a tote or a t shirt to that healthcare hero so Stephanie. You gotta package coming your way. Easter can happen even with social distancing and being quarantined digger. House with your family. So I thought I'd share with Y'all what my family is going to be doing. In case you needed any ideas or just motivation to still make the day special so first of all we're going to be streaming Easter Service from our church there's broadcasts from all over the country that you can likely tune in to but you could also check with your church that you go to and if they're doing that or a local community church in your area to see if they have plans to streaming service if not. I'll share with y'all my church you can go to youtube DOT COM and search out. C O T C. Franklin live again. Just go into Youtube and search that out see OTC Franklin live and my church will pop up and they will have a Easter morning service. I think it's at ten A. M. Central is when it goes up so That's what we'll be doing in the morning. Then we plan to cook a meal as a family I mean what brings people together more than food mean not much else so get everybody together and get them involved in the kitchen. I know my husband and I plan on getting the kids outside. I think the weather is going to be good. And we're going to grill out. The kids want steak and chicken and some corn on the COB. So we're going to have them learning how to grill and doing that with us. And then I'm gonNA bake some sweet potatoes and make a salad and then I wanNA put out like a blanket outside in our backyard and then just have a little outdoor barbecue with the family so whatever that looks like for you. We'll probably even get my dad on our little Amazon show so that he can enjoy lunchtime with ass but we do also plan on doing an Easter egg hunt with the kids. So I'm GONNA hide some eggs inside and outside but also get the grandparents involved in that virtually so fun fact. Facetime can accommodate up to thirty two guests on a call. So you can get your family together on a facetime and how I envisioned. A Virtual Easter egg hunt is the grandparents just on with our kids as they're walking around with the phone and they're helping guide them where to go like maybe look behind that plant or look under the couch or oh you should go over there and check behind that bookshelf or something. I don't know yet. It's all in my head but I do want my family to be involved will probably face time with my sister and her kids on Easter as well and make sure that we get in a lot of good quality family time because that's normally when a lot of people would try to be together but you may not and if you happen to be alone on Easter like you're alone during this corentin than definitely find a way to make some facetime appointments with. I don't even want to call it appointment. But some dates some face time or zoom dates or whatever that looks like for you with your family and friends and cook that meal with just you. Maybe have them cook a meal? Open a nice bottle of wine and enjoy that with someone virtually in. If you're a family that knows of someone that might be alone then reach out to them. And say hey. Would you like to face time with US or think of a game you can play? Virtually like if you both have the same board Gamer. The same cards or the same like everybody can still do. Different things virtually. Let's be intentional about reaching out to people that might be alone. Or if you're alone don't be scared to reach out to some of your friends or family and say hey you WanNa make some Easter plans to hang out. I know that we also plan on baking something for us. It'll be cookies for you. It might a cake or whatever it is that you like to bake but my family is going to be doing cookies. And then we're going to have some vanilla ice cream with cookies because my kids and Ben are obsessed with the ice cream and that's our plan for the day So we just got to be a little bit extra intentional but holidays can still happen. Special memories can still be made. And we'll look back on Roy that time in twenty twenty corona virus we had to do a virtual Easter egg hunt or we had to face time to have Camille or Easter Brunch or lunch or whatever with our family crazy times crazy times. I mean church even for that matter. I'm super thankful for all the churches out there. That are putting stuff up for us to Still feel connected at home. I just think that that's huge especially on Easter. That may be the one of the year or maybe twice. If you go Christmas that you actually go to church which no judgment here on that whatsoever but you probably look forward to those holidays when you get out of your house and you get to get dressed up maybe even get dressed up may not have nowhere to go but you can still put on your Easter best. We probably won't. That's not what we're GONNA roll at my house at all. We'll probably be in. Like sweats the whole day. But who cares? You're GONNA do the day. How you you need to do the day. Also you could check out Keaton clause. That's her instagram. Handle my friend Keaton. That's come on before she specializes in Christmasy stuff but she does all holiday things. So you've got a few more days till Easter if you're listening to this on Thursday and She has some really good Easter tips especially for the family and kids up on her instagram. So she's at K. E. A. T. Y. N. C. L. A. U. S. E. Okay so definitely give her a follow and I just hope that y'all have an amazing Easter however you spent it and I hope me sharing our plans of what we WANNA do on Easter Sunday. We'll help encourage you. And if y'all have ideas for me please. Hip Radio me on instagram. Or four things with Amy Brown at gmail.com guys. I don't know about you but with my family's busy schedule. A three of their roasts online and one of their roasts is called base camp and that happens to be their favourite blend and she was she was sipping her coffee and sending me thoughts as she was thinking about her base camp coffee and what she shared was that base camp in. Camping is where you rest where you re fuel where you organize you nourish you plan and you get ready so right now. She feels as though a lot of us are at home. Where Base Camp? And you have a choice on how you want to spend this time at Your Base Camp. You can rest. Refuel Organiz Nourish Plan and get ready for when we get out on the other side of this. And I'll just shout out some of the other flavors of coffee that my sister has. I just wanted to share that little note from her because I thought that that was an inspiring little text that she sent me that. I thought I would pass along to y'all but each coffee bag that they sell has a little user's guide for inspiration on each bag so campfire user's guide is ignite your dreams and then basecamp though when I was just telling you about the user's guide on that is find your outside which for my sister and her family is not just outside in the woods but maybe outside your everyday comfort zone and maybe the risks that we take to grow again another reason why base camp coffee might be good for you to drink during this time or maybe if you don't even want to order some or drinking you can reflect on these words that I'm giving you because maybe it's time you step outside of your comfort zone and you gotta take some risks and we do have to grow and then backwards which is the third roast user's guide on that is fuel your adventure. Which again is an outdoor adventure or the adventure of starting a business or a family or anything new and exciting and just a quick. No on the beans that my sister cells. They're grown organically but they don't say organic because against the growers are. Usda approved because that is really expensive for growers to get. But if that's a concern of yours that I just you know that to bid of Information Brute House Co is her website and its route house. Co Dot Com and. I'm just super proud of her and her sweet little business and I just it warms my heart the actually buying her coffee. But even if you're not I thought that this was some stuff to share with you for you to just keep with you at this time. Maybe you keep drinking the coffee that you buy or you support a local coffee shop in your neighborhood and you think about what she shared When it comes to base camp where you can rest. Refuel organized nourish plan and get ready. Okay this thing is going to be super quick. But I'm GONNA leave you with an inspiring quote at the end of it because I just don't really feel like this is something that substantial but my mind was definitely blown when I saw. It is an article that was in the Wall Street Journal talking. About how if you'RE A helicopter cleaner? Which if you don't know what that is like when it comes to your dishwasher if you are pre cleaning your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. That's a helicopter cleaner like you're hovering over things to make sure that they're good before you put them in the dishwasher like a helicopter parent you hover over your kids to make sure that they're doing good while when we helicopter clean before we put them in our dishwasher. We're actually not going to get a really substantial wash from our machine now. Most modern dishwashers have these sensors on them. That help them detect how long the cycle should run. And how clean that? The machine should get everything and if you pre wash everything except for maybe one Bulla oatmeal to gets thrown in there or one casserole dish. That randomly gets in there but everything else is clean. What's not going to run a very thorough cycle. And then that will have oatmeal or that casserole. Dish is still going to have oatmeal or cheese. Or whatever stuck on it because the machine didn't know it had a major job to do so really they say the best thing to do is to just dump whatever from the plate into the trash instead of giving your plate's a full rents just scrape large food particles into the garbage disposal or the trash can and then let the dishwasher. Do the work. That's why we have dishwashers. And then the best part of skipping out on helicopter cleaning is you can not only save time and money but you save up to twenty gallons of water per each load of dishes. So there's my dishwasher tip of the day and again I told you all. This wasn't super substantial. I was going to leave you with an inspiring quote but I mean hey. The dishwasher article was in the Wall Street Journal. So something that I feel like somebody that was interesting and I certainly my helicopter cleaner. So I'm going to have to change my ways and test it out like not rinsing things off thoroughly. Just throwing them in there. I feel like I'm going to save a lot of time. Okay now. Here's my quote from Dolly Parton. We cannot direct the wind but we can adjust the sales. That's a good one to sit with for a little bit. Maybe with all your extra time from not pre cleaning your dishes you can think about that quote from Dolly. Just definitely a good quote to have in your pocket during these crazy times okay. Others thought it was a fantasy, but what really happened that September night in rural New Hampshire join me toby ball for the inaugural season of stranger rivals a co production of iheartradio in Griffin mild from Aaron Monkey listen to strange arrivals on the iheartradio APP on Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Anne and Samantha and welcome to death on never told you production of iheartradio's how stuff works. Today. We're talking about banned girls girls. Yes, actually really excited to talk I know forever ago. We did a video on Fan. Girls and I have been meaning to return to it ever since and the timing feels right, because as you record this Disney plus has just come out who and frozen to is coming out next week. My phone has already been bombarded with advice articles on how to avoid getting ear wormed with the new song. Even though same phone is the one that keeps playing that song in Google shuffled. This is why I don't listen to Google, shuffle. It's giving me. Mixed messages is a yeah. It has one message which is pretty much listen, go watch as obsessed by. and it's got me thinking all of the how we talk about fan girls, and how we talk about the things that they like yeah, and also I recently went to Disney and seeing all the little girls in costumes, I I have a particular soft spot for Ray from Star Wars. In those costumes all? Causing US good. Girl of anything Samantha I actually fan girl, Dover few young boys in my time Jonathan. Brandon was my heart throb r.i.p when I was younger, but then I would also get really obsessed with like Buffy, and save by the Bell, which I would watch religiously. I could probably still tell you all about all the episodes for each one of those things and of course I was really obsessed with like different music, groups and new kids on the block. With people who was better. Was Joey girl, okay in sync, Alexey fought with my sister was better in sync or backstreet boys and you're in. sinker. Also had a really big. Yeah, love for boys to men because I just wanted them to Croon to me about how they loved me. Oh, that's. That's great that you said that. Because we're going to be returning to that kind of idea very into the episodes, so it's selling to look forward to, but what about you? Got A lot. But give me a rundown. A was fingerling all in all kinds of things. I was huge in America nationally. Young Hercules charmed supernatural green days. Probably my greatest example of if you're going to do a classic, this is a fan girl I would check all the boxes for green. Bay. That was probably the big one. Harry Potter and Star Wars. Stargate as she won, and I also had an have some fan girl tendencies around about one hundred other things these days, but I suppose we should step back a bit and define band girl. From Dictionary Dot. Com Fan girl is a female fan. Especially one who is obsessive about comics, movies, music or science fiction, the Merriam Webster definition is a bit different. A girl or woman is extremely are overly enthusiastic fan of someone or something. An extension of girls is fingerling, which is basically the verb form. And then we have this from urban dictionary the art of sesing over Phantoms the characters in the phantoms, the actress who played a character, if the Phantom of film, Our show, etc, just saying something to do with a fan, Girl Phantom will usually lead them frantically crashing into the room. You're making a high pitch sounds that to you might sound meaningless, but two other girls. We'll make total sense example lately. Do you want do this? As a back and forth okay I'll be the obvious person. Okay, so this is the example that urban dictionary gave me. Dean Winchester G. Just, tobacco so the Mayor Berry. Fan Grueling again. And then she passes out. Clap. I. have to ask was the was the actual example supernatural? Yes, that's hilarious. Yeah, 'cause, it does fit right because I feel like I gotten into supernatural because of you. Girl Yeah. or They, you were so the The sexiest man alive was announced from magazine John Legend who who can also seemed to me all day long. This and there were several several people who were really upset and some because they wanted the other people are better because people always have opinions or sure and one of the names that kept coming up was dean, winchester or Ginseng apples, so he's been thrown up as being should've been. Man Alive, he's a far I'm looking specimen thing. We're GONNA talk about this, too is a lot of the reason. If that dictionary dictionary definition wasn't clear. That we dismiss. Things fan girls like is because we assume it's very superficial. And I would counter. You can appreciate some good looks and other things you know you love someone who just you know, somber and brooding I do specifically as. I was saying that for myself. Definitely the character Dean Winchester Anyway this. Whole thing right now. There is another urban dictionary definition I wanted to include which is the reaction of anger has to any mention her sighting of the object of her affection. These reactions include shortness of breath fainting high pitched noises, shaking fears head shaking as if in the midst of a seizure wet panties, endless blog post, etc, well, this is actually indicative of something. We want to dig into into this episode. The condescending attitude have towards fan girls and the things that they love. The stereotypical rendering of a finger involves a teenage girl hype screaming and Obsessive Behavior Rate. The word fan girl was first used as a noun with its current meaning nineteen, thirty four, it was I used as a verb, and two thousand five teenyboppers was coined in the nineteen sixties with the definition of quote, an early adolescent girl, but with a connotation of animalistic tendencies similar to the modern fan girl definition. And side note, one thing I personally love about girls is the language. They've created to communicate. I could devote an entire episode to the ACRONYMS I traffic on in on fan fiction dot net It's creative and so specific to things. We all know like us. T. unresolved sexual tension. Also I discovered. Stand Him. Sebastian Stan fandom. Which explains some questions I've gotten when dressed as the winter soldier. Look good as the winter soldier any way. that's all. Fishing. Fan Boy is the male version of fan girl, not surprising, and if you're curious, the dictionary definition of a fan is a person who was a strong interest in or admiration for a particular person or a thing, the thing that then separates the fan from the fan girl is the girl and the view that van girls are extreme that they're out there rabidly devouring all the interviews collecting rare photos writing blog posts and that they're paying phenom consumes their identity. Yeah, in rabid a word that comes up a lot when you're talking about fan girls, if you go online and find any XYZ's signed your fan girl. Most of them are not complementary. Some of them are. But most of them are not so we have a lot to to dig into here but I. We have a quick break for word from our sponsor. Here's the thing saving money with Geico is almost better than playing pickup basketball 'cause. There's always that guy who joins your game. He never passes the rock. He constantly bricks threes, and who completely hack you, and then put his hands up and say no foul, no foul with gyco. It's easy to switch and save on car. No need to fake an ankle sprain because you're absolutely exhausted so switch and save with Gyco. It's almost better than sports. Guys, it's bobby bones I host the bobby bones show, and I'm pretty much obviously, because a wake up at three o'clock in the morning a couple of hours later I, get all my friends together, so we get into a room and we do a radio show. I. Ninety Eight Point Seven W W. MC Q in Washington, DC or wherever the rotates you on the iheartradio APP. Back, thank you sponsor. So if you look at our history throughout our history, there have been infamous examples of girls. Perhaps the most well known is Beatle Mania. More modern Lee we have things like Justin Bieber the believers bt, wonder, action which like we mentioned in our fan fiction episodes because there was a bart, one and two. And the those are great primers for this one one direction fan fiction makes up most of the fan fiction on the APP what to pass really Yep I will say phantoms their powerful. Oh Yeah, just as we're learning like there's a whole controversy with Taylor Swift Oh. Yea! And she's reached out to her and group. It's giant is getting a lot of traction. Yeah, so from a Nineteen forty-six New Yorker article. Most of his fans are playing lonely girls from lower middle class homes. They are dazzled by the life Sinatra lease and wish they could share in it. They insist that they love him, but they do not use the verb in its ordinary sense as they apply it to him. It is synonymous with worship or idealize. Yes, so that was a whole. Sort of before Sinatra got big I believe with that was written, and it was like these babies right and I think that was part of the reason he wasn't taken seriously because they just assume as an actor. He was thinking seriously as an actor because he was like Oh. You're just performing for the ladies right and we're GONNA. Talk about that more in depth leader fan. Girls actually get a lot of credit though for cement. Of what are now with distance and mail? Legitimising critically acclaimed musicians artists? They don't get the credit, but they should their dedication and willingness to spend money right and spread. The word was the basis for artists to continue making music, or you can even think of actors like James Dean Leonardo Di Caprio, which was the reason I still haven't seen. Titanic is because I was so afraid of being called like a fan girl. and we'll talk about that. Also A bit. Or Michael J. Fox who actually allegedly changed his middle initial from a so that magazines would quit calling him a Fox News thing. Ainhoa also phantoms. This is not necessarily fan. Girls have brought back canceled shows. Yeah, so they have done. These groups are powerful. Yep Oh. Yeah, and something else. We did WANNA touch on here. we mentioned in our fan. Fiction episodes as well as a book by Rainbow Ralph Fan Girl. This story falls Cath. He was a fan girl of Simon Snow, which is a Harry Potter analog? She's spends a lot of her time writing Simon Snow Fan fiction of fan fiction that is peppered throughout the book, and there's a sequel that is the complete fan fiction, and it's called. Carry on, have both of these working on the first one right now? Really enjoying it okay. Recently, the Belvoir and Brisbane Festival, co-production and association with the Australian Theatre for young people put out a play called. Girls Eve. Blake wrote the Book Music and lyrics in Page rattray directed it if Blake got the idea for the play. After meeting a thirteen year old girl who told her absolute seriousness, she was going to marry Harry Styles Amber League. And this led her to examine that reaction in delve into every aspect of fandom and fan girls. She later said all my assumptions about fan. Girls were built on Society Wide Prejudices Towards Young Women when they expressed passion, and what I realized is that the world looks very differently at a group of young boys, screaming their lungs out at a football match than it does at a group of young fan girl screaming their lungs out at a bieber concert. So obviously, she's not alone in her assumption. Finishes is always a negative terms as a phantom has become more mainstream, so too has a backlash against fan girls when Peter Cappelli was announced as the new doctor. The Internet was full of delighted comments about how this would finally rid the Phantom of the fan, girls the Hashtag. Started trending. Yeah for those. If you don't know the doctor being doctor, who and so in that in that kind of mythos. The doctor generates, and it's a way for the store to continue. What also did production to cast a new actor right, and so that actor previous to this one Smith was young and attractive and a lot of now on the crown, or was on the Yes. Yeah! but anyway yeah. There was this backlash. Against what was seen as? Superficial fan girls. You're just fans because they thought he was attract. And that has lasted so long. Oh, yeah show. BBC usually doesn't keep a show. Any will sleep well. You know the interesting thing about that. We talked about our fan fiction episode. Nine hundred sixty seven I think it was one of the original. Way when we talk about fan fiction. The. First waves of. Official I guess Fan, Fan Club Fan, organizations and magazines, and here it is to this day star. Trek was the other one still still yours From Pamela voice cultural lives of doctor who doctor who fandom. Favor the dismissal of Fan. Girls is familiar to those of us who steady pop culture as stereotypical denigration of feminist mass culture in opposition to masculine quote art, it assumes that female fans are an ad on derivative and lesser than male Phantom which is assumed to be motivated by more serious interest. The vagaries of time, travel versus the appeal of TV stars. And something. Personal I wa! I was thinking about this. I remember my brother and his friends making fun of my love of Star Wars which they also love. And making me feel like not only was I not welcome. And this was something I was going to have to keep to myself that something was wrong with me that I should be embarrassed about it. And I it got to the point that I kind of hit my phantom. And I went to my mom about it asked her if something was wrong with. And then yeah, I avoided things. I associated with girls like boy, bands and titanic I never saw it because all my friends thought Leonardo DiCaprio was hot and I was like I. Don't to be a part of that. I didn't likely I was a fan, just win against the grain about who I was a fan of. Who Did you can titanic I didn't like anyone Jay. Scrawny okay. Strong winds so several boy bands were formed specifically with targeting straight fingers in mine, which is actually something that happened with both backstreet boys, and in sync, the manager Lou. Pearlman made a lot of money, and then had a lot of political battles with that as well because he created these bands in knowing the he could monetize off of fan girls, and dammit he surely did he do until instinct fought. The volume got the rise back, yeah. SMART. And Yeah. There is a lot going on here involves several things we've talked about in past episodes. One of them is gate. Keeping keeping is typically done by men who feel entitled to dictate the Right Way to be a fan, and who is allowed to be in the club. These right ways to be a fan are typically quoted as male fantasy activities that are typically coated as feminine like 'cause play or making costumes fan, fiction fan art are derided it and seen as quote, not true or acceptable fandom. and think of how comfortable we feel making fun of and demeaning things associated with fan girls twilight. Twilight! It was a very easy. Read I. You know what I've come around to doing. The research for this fingernails are onto something. Maybe they're onto is a great piece of art, but there's a reason why it's popular right? They're not. A. Lot of sexual frustration You. Know, but we are going to talk about some of that later. Some creators recently come out and said hey, stop policing my phantom because fan girl money is just as good as your money again though men have capitalized on fan, girls as we talk about Lou. they created in knowing that they can make a lot of money. Yeah, including Barbie, dolls more or Whatever dolls doll instinct dolls. You got into sink dolls. Don't you don't thousand one thing I never well I didn't buy anything much. I didn't even go to concerts either really. Expensive sure they were I remember I had a friend who went to actually boys concert. Yeah elementary school or something and she. I mean I feel so happy for just thinking about it because she was so excited static. I definitely watched everything on TV. On. Board it whatever anyway so women also distance themselves from fan girls, and maybe void being made fun of as you were talking about or to be deemed legitimate, maybe because of the whole girl, which implies immaturity, which is yeah, very demeaning and manipulative. Yeah, and you can also see your toxic Phantom episode for on `gate-keeping now the history of being a nerd and the hierarchies and expertise that came with it led to this misogynistic `gate-keeping. In that episode we also went into the fig geek girl, which is different, but related to fan girls. Fate Geek girl is something is someone who is just a faker, and knows nothing about any given phantom that she is pretending to like in the mind of Dude Geeks, anyway, she she really isn't fakey girl. Really thing and something else. That's happening as the dismissal and demonizing of. Of Things, women and girls like and specifically things, young women like it goes beyond the message, you don't belong not doing it right, but to outright mocking and disgust and their Internet spaces fingers have carved out and created for themselves that are havens for them to express themselves, but by large these spaces are far and few between wrapped up in this is the weaponize word hysteria which has. Come on Y'all frequently levelled at Bangles along with others like emotional, which apparently is a week, thing, and things we don't see when it comes to fan boys yeah. and. We've talked before about brownies on the show and how we met when men into a fandom that has classically been derided as feminine which is terrible, but it's just seen as this like silly thing. Women like right that Phantom is legitimised. Something similar happened with the Beatles when it was women who were the fans they reviewed as hysterical and the Beatles themselves not worth the time then dues relate. This is good stuff, and then fandom is legitimised. They're making great music that we still listen to to this day. and of course sports fan, which is similar levels of expression, but is coded as masculine and therefore. That means you wear jerseys now, hey. Say Love them fantasy football say things like I'm not. Yeah, which is. Which is yeah and sports? Are you're? Totally cool that. We shouldn't be judging other phantoms, because they're feminine on different standards, and you know they. That's the `gate-keeping do that. The expectation is that women are not like sports as much as they do. Yes, and we had several listeners right in. About that when we did our actually are fan fiction episode. About how it was just assumed they were there because. Their husbands significant other. Whoever dragged them? They're right or they were. Attracted to one of the parade and I. Know The whole Social Media. Stuff people are making fun of the girls who are doing selfies. Saying that's the only reason they're. They're there to take selfish. And that's what if they're just enjoying their time? What if Fun beat them. Let them beat them. And we have some some more some more stuff about fan girls for you, but first we have a walmart great break for word from our sponsor. Hey guys. It's Jack O'Brien Co founder of crack dot. Pop culture experts have examined girl for just about as long as it has existed, and why our culture has such anxiety around it and one thing experts believe is a part of this is. How girls go through adolescence, and are feeling sexual desires, expressing that via celebrity are fictional character that that's something that is safe. Right now in our society, girls grow up with the message that their existence in life is wrapped in finding a husband, the hunter and richer, the better. Luckily, this is changing. celebrities check those boxes, and despite ardent release that will one day meet the object of our affection. We haven't which gives us artistic license to imagine how great our lives will be without the reality of what it would really be like, and the lyrics like you're saying earlier, they tell these lyrics are telling young women. Angles I WANNA. Love you forever. No matter what you were perfect, you are beautiful. The you don't need to change a damn thing and who wouldn't want. To be seen all of a sudden and we've said before we'll say it again. We are terrified female sexuality, particularly Young Women's sexuality, a live Geeky white dues criticized fan girl for being interested in hot lead actors, and this is not true fandom when look at the of one nation is generally assumed that all their fans are fan girls so therefore. Duration automatically means you are only there for their looks. You weren't very intelligent. Everything you like a suspect that your thoughts and opinions are invalid and that not like in one direction. Make the person better. Yep this is gross and sexist. The fact that women especially young women light something does not give people the right to put all these assumptions on them, and even our news coverage reflects our derision when. I broke up a lot of news coverage. Outright ridicule, the fans and their distress, but one of their favorite bands broke up. A really sucks. It does I hate it when the show gets cancelled. Yeah, it makes you really sad, yeah! Harry styles has been asked whether he believes that one's actions. Largely female fan base has held him back from being seen as a serious musician kind of like what you mentioned earlier. His response, who's to say that young girls who like pop music short for popular right have worse musical tastes than a thirty year old hipster guy. That's not up to you to say. Music is something that's always changing. There's no goalpost. Young Girls Lake the Beatles. You'RE GONNA. Tell me they're not serious. How can you say young girls don't get it. They're our future future. Doctors Lawyers Mothers Presidents. They kind of keep the world going teenage girl fans. They don't lie day like you. They're they're they don't act to cool. They like you and they tell you which is sick. Meeting off in a good way. And from two thousand, fourteen, rolling Stone Nicole about Harry Styles There was this quote. He knows he serves at the pleasure of a girl. Audience absolutely cannot be bought. Scammed condescended to or taken for granted. It's been tried if you're a girl pop fan, you're the only power player in the music business. Everybody else is scared stiff of you. It's true it's true. I've also read arguments. That fan girl is a decentralized form of Groupie that makes sense. Yeah, because we're so afraid of women sexual agency in this dichotomy, women are either superficial unintelligent fans in the derogatory understanding. What a fan girl is or a woman who is only in a fandom to? Have Sex both dismissed that women might actually like the music or whatever it is that they're fanning over a likely have to sexualize them in order to. Validate why they might like something. And all this language and derision around fan girl sort of creates a cage for women were the only acceptable way to express their emotions around something they love is very measured, and we can also see this gestion. Speak Yeah because if you think about the all of the articles around up talk or vocal fry. Yeah Yeah Yeah. A part of it feels like an acceptable way to express sexist thoughts, pointing at something we so far have allowed and supported making fun of and taking pleasure and young women. Against the patriarchy fail it kind of Weirds me out. The more I think about how comfortable you are, which is being like look how stupid and silly! These young girls are because they like this thing so unnecessary. Why take the joy from someone? Yeah, come on. Adolescents is a messy time for I always say all of us. A time when we're trying to figure out who we are all these pieces of our identity trying to stay alive. Yeah, fandom is a way of finding a tribe and pieces of phantom are ways to find parts of yourself to figure out what you want, which can change with age It's a tool to learn about yourself ice. Then the fan fiction episode I learned all about sex. From Band vixen and what? I liked what I did it. One study conducted on young. Adult Fan Culture concluded. Idolization popstars has unique characteristics for adolescents. It provides a basis for self expression, the construction of self identity and the achievement of independence. And Yeah. This is also a time when. You are going through your budding sexuality and sexual desires, and you're feeling these things. Right Lance Bass figured out he was gay or actually came out after instinct, but was told not to come because that would ruin the fans fandom. Oh, wow, that sounds and pretend to like girls. which happens a lot, but yeah thing is definitely a time that people start figure out people girls, anyone who is a fan. Start figure out of your sexuality. You were talking about previously about X. files. Very tries to to both the. Says A lot. And I was also thinking about how since the message we get it? or at least I can say personally that I got was that. You need to get married and it's GonNa. Be The greatest best thing of your whole life. Then you're going to fantasize about finding that right person. We've been conditioned to believe true. Love is the ultimate thing right and so. Here's this for me. Was Ryan Gosling? He was the one I told my mom I would marry and bless her heart. She did not laugh at me, They're. TOLD PEOPLE GONNA. Marry anyone specifics. Album did. I really yeah, I felt it and. I do WANNA say of course there are unhealthy expressions, of Phantom, in all aspects of Fandom, including girls and fan, girl communities, Fan, girls can and definitely do engage in their own form of `gate-keeping like flaming, which is way to shut up voices. They don't like especially devastating when entire fan club turns on you, I had an experience of very tiny experienced with Arianna Grandes fan club and No, thank you. I Apologize I'm sorry. I'm a little afraid of the bay highs. As the swifty but I enjoy both these artists, so yeah, I have nothing to say, but yeah, they're fears. Yeah, we'll like you've been saying the powerful power full one thing that does differentiate fan girls, though is the stream, obsessive qualities of it or troubling beliefs, a lot of these things can be phases right like adolescents is fees that's not to diminish fingernails or what they like at all or to say that everything that fails phase, but there are parts of it. That can't be and it's like totally natural and health. Right and not being said Fan Labor is often replaced with derogatory words like stalking or creepy when it comes to fan girls, but fan, labor is just a part of fandom finding out all the details, just dissecting the memorizing them intelligence to the fan community that's the same level of knowledge among male fans or sports fans, which is not looked upon as negative, is seen as expertise Iraq music critic Jessica Hopper tweeted a awhile back. Replace the World Fan girl with expert and see what happens and. And psychologists do caution about celebrity unrealistic body image standards that girls may internalize and manifest as an eating disorder and we've talked about that previously, and is definitely something that we have to be careful of yes, and that's something that. When I was researching this this article came up of pretty much reassuring parents. Yes, your fan girl, your daughter. She might. It's fine. You might be obsessive, but here the things you should actually be looking for right I and a lot of the things were your. Body image standards the celebrity in question. Tutoring Salat or smokes? Or if there's an underlying issue. Like depression. That has sort of become wrapped up in the fandom or whatever it is, but it's not the fandom are expressing the love for that. It's different thing right right right And Yeah I just last night. Was Amazed at. Green Day was my I think. Most right best example of all of this and somebody asked me a random trivia question, and damned, if I still don't have it rally here. You. Do you learn all of these things? And you contribute and collaborate These shows like I'll go back and look at their I M, DB stuff and just see like who's with what and where they're from Louis Yeah and this is what that was. Oh, they were born in this time. That's cute. Yeah, so in conclusion I suppose the thing is. There are different levels of fandom. Right and you get to decide what kind of fan you are. No one else can only as much as they are going to try. Phantom is a diverse space and by policing it. We're not allowing it to grow and be as robust and creative and welcoming as it can and should be. Fan Girls are not a monolithic. We come in a variety of ages. Some of us are there for the hot celebrity others, or it might be a Combo booth or it might differ depending on the fandom. L. Say the whole different ages. It's hard to be a fan girl when all the new stuff has really young kids and they don't like or as dirty. Uh. That's something. Different topic. So yeah I really left this feeling of warmth in my heart for the fan girl. And I still am in many ways, a fan girl, but Just again, don't I? Respect the fan old. Yeah, because they're onto something there experts and they're making you money. Yes, for someone, not me I don't know what. Any of this show on right in. Fiction with me at once, and it was the best day of my entire life. That I don't actually because I'm scared. What would that would be? "If me time is focused for you in two thousand twenty then have the perfect little scenario for you. Make some tea. Get a cosy blanket. Cuddle up with some pepperidge farm milano cookies because Pepperidge Farm Milano believe that you should make some time for yourself every once in a while and so do I am Milano cookies or the perfect treat to savor. During me time they have just the right amount of cookie and luxuriously rich chocolate visit type of treats that you WANNA share although my kids are obsessed with them too so I share with them. But don't forget to take some for your me time. Remember to save something for yourself with pepperidge farm a lot now. Okay so Achtung things. We're going to really try to make this a fifteen minute. Qna also still has never happened. But also I've got a idea for the Tuesday episodes. I needed to remind me that I want to start doing this right here with me but I wanNA start the Tuesday Cuna episodes off with a quote. Great ideas quote ready for today. Or what is it's from Mother Teresa. And it's kind. Words can be short and easy to speak but they're echoes are truly endless so it's just a reminder like if you're kind to somebody whether it's a stranger somebody you know and you say something like it could be the one thing that turns their day around. It could be the one thing they needed to hear. It could be the thing that they're gonna hear over and over that echo in their head of like. Oh so and so that person said this to me and that might be something that just echoes for them. So in its really simple. Main like trees much short and easy to speak. Okay so first. Question is from swims for Molly. She wants to know. Have you read Jessica Simpson's book? If not you totally. Should I think you would like it? Okay well I didn't read it but I listened to the Audio version. Does that count as days. I was so obsessed with finishing it that I was listening to it while I was getting ready while I was working out while I was driving. I got through that pretty quickly and I was very impressed. I learned all kinds of things about her that I had no idea. I think sometimes we assume because some people can be so public and there was a time growing up. Well I mean you know not not sure it was like a childhood star to me but like in some of my formative years like I was watching her and I thought I knew everything about her. Because you know. They invited us into their home on newlyweds and her nick reading and divorce and I was devastated. And you know it was like all the things but I just thought I always knew what was going on with her and the crazy things that happened her and really it just was a reminder that you have no idea you have no idea what people are going through famous or not famous so I was reminded of the word grace to keep that in mind for people that something I I try to remind myself a lot about and we bring it up. Here on the PODCAST. Because I think it's important you never know like. I think there was even times recently where I was seeing how she was she would act in by recently. I mean maybe in the last five years or so. I don't know when that interview was from her when she was on Ellen where she was totally out of it but she addresses that in the book and I remember watching that mean like what is wrong with her like she's crazy but she's not I mean yes she had some stuff going on but you know we all do at some point and when you take all the way back to some of the stuff that she had deal with in her childhood and then how. She learned to cope with things and deal with things with alcohol and pills and whatnot. It all make sense and you just have. It's like Oh and then hearing it from her perspective. I just kept thinking Grace Grace Grace and she is so good. You need this even as a guy like. I think that you would like it. Probably intrigued just a little bit because I remember the newlyweds right the MTV show. And I was like I mean when you were mentioning that it was so in depth. I'm like now I mean she gets into the data John Mayer and what her divorce was really like. I think we thought we knew but we had no idea kind of like. Isn't that the tagline for real world or it was when that show was on. It's like you think you know but you have no idea. And that's that yeah. I feel like that tagline. It could have been called Jessica Simpson Open Book even know but you have no idea and I feel like. That's you learn a lot about people when they put out a book like that where they go all the way back and share with you. The INS and outs of their life in their story and What what made them who they are and I thought she has been through a lot but I found to be interesting. She's like I wouldn't change anything. I wouldn't change any of it and because she's grown from it and let her on the path to where she is today and yeah it's a pretty successful business. Her Jessica Simpson Line is billion dollar companies. Yeah which I would have never. She's extremely honest in this book and she talks about that in checks when she dated. Tony Romo their stuff that she brought up about him where I was like all the Dallas fans were haters. Remember the husband is a big Dallas Cowboys Fan and I remember people treating her so poorly and you know she didn't. They didn't want her games. And I didn't realize at time she addresses how Tony never stick up for her and I was like. Oh Dang Lame. But she has the story about him and his house in like checks if too. I don't WanNa ruin it if you want to listen to it and then I cried at the end just yeah. Mary just finished it too. I saw her. I know that she was listening to it as well but I just saw that. She posted on Instagram like earlier today that she finished it so I haven't message yet if she cried but I did at the end but I was not expecting and it made me cry so really. There's good that's good. Okay I like it a follow up with you on this all right. Let's keep this move in the next one's from page. Hey Amy I love your podcast. I listen first thing when it comes out. I was wondering how you wake up so early and still seem to have so much energy throughout the day. I never seem to feel well rested and struggle to wake up early if you take any vitamins or supplements to help you sleep or give you energy full first of all. I think you start with the sleep like let's look at. How much sleep are you getting? Are you getting the seven to nine hours? I know nine seems crazy. Because we've just I know eight seems like that's what you're supposed to get but that seems impossible so you maybe get six or seven but really people say our goal should be eight or nine. And that's I'm trying to make sleep such a priority which waking up super early that means I go to bed super early and we and I always have because of the morning show but you know even on the weekends if I don't have to be up late is still my husband and I are trying to get in bed early. Just that we don't break that routine and that rhythm So start with sleep. Let's look at. How much water are you drinking? I think Water intake can be huge on energy levels. And then are you eating regularly and adequately for your body or giving it the fuel that it needs food fuel and I think sometimes as a society we can run off caffeine. I know I have been guilty of this but once I started to shift into not being like scared of eating and food I you know instead of just drinking coffee all day or Macho Taser t to kind of curb my appetite. I I had more energy so make sure you're not turning to caffeine if you feel a slob like maybe it's really that you need an apple because that can energize you just as much as a cup of coffee and then also the supplements. I take like. I've told you before I take a probiotic every day. Occasionally take food enzymes. I take magnesium before I sleep and then I take Oshawa Gonda during the day and the brand that I like. I have brands up on my Amazon page for all those radio DOT COM. If you want to find those things in the Austral Gonda I like Himalayas. It's a organic supplement that you can take the boost. Your energy in reduces stress. So it's something that I've been into are used to powder form and throw it in my smoothies but I wasn't always having a smoothie every day so now I just take it in the pill form so Himalayas is the company and Shogun gone. You may even here. I do commercials here on the podcast. There was one point. I think they had like a code. Maybe the code was amy. A try and like you got a free bottle but I don't know if they there was only a limited number of bottles of that so those are the only supplements that I take Besides I guess is back. Proteins considered a supplement Which I've started try ancient nutrition. It's another brand that makes Collagen and I also just started some of their probiotics too. Because I ran out of my Kimberly Snyder ones. So but I don't know just another bran free to check out if you see it at the store I actually like it because I do not like all Collagen powders. Some of them taste nasty. Even though they say unflavored they're not heads up again. Remember the Food Pyramid and Apple. A day keeps the doctor away. And when you everything you wanted and needed just from one gem that mentality is super old school. There's a whole new world of fitness and wellness out there. I'm looking to see if you have any great goto recipes for protein shakes smoothies. I'm getting a little burnout on my chocolate spinach and Avocado Combo every day. Oh Yeah I mean you got to mix it up. I can see you getting burnt out for sure but I guess if you already have chocolate protein powder. I would recommend throwing in some fresh mint and make a mint chocolate chip shake. But if you're really burnout then you might need to get some vanilla protein powder and I like garden of life. They make a good one. The Garden of life actually makes a good one that my kids love and what I make their protein pancakes out of and it's vanilla sky. That is a good one and you could maybe do that with some almond milk and frozen blueberries or frozen banana and a little bit spinach or Greens in there. So be well by Kelly. She has a lot of good smoothie recipes up on her blog. If you want to go check those out but I mean I just kind of try not to think about it to play around play around with different things. Don't be scared. The only thing I say with smoothies and I try to watch it. I don't think anything is bad but even if you go to be well. Kelly's you'll see a lot of hers. Don't have fruit. But she's trying to watch you spiking your insulin level. And so that's why she's not throwing a bunch of fruit and her smoothies and when you buy smoothie owl you kind of need to watch out for that because they'll load 'em up with fruit and fruit is great for you but it can be high in sugar so depending on if you don't want to like crash after but everybody's different but doesn't mean you can't have fruit in there but just play around with the ingredients that do you have a good smoothie you like a pretty simple. I do a banana strawberries. A lot of spinach and then like protein. A protein shake separate where young kids like. 'cause I'm bad at getting this load spinach in there. That's mart Mango is another good. One with Vanilla. Like if you have a plain Vanilla Protein powder and then you do like some frozen mango and maybe like a chunk of frozen pineapple or something it tastes like a Pina Colada. So try that good ones. Maybe add some rum just getting last ones from Tracy. Hey what is the snack? You said you're addicted to on the bobby bones show the other day hip something else. Hippies H. I. P. P. E. A. S. LIKE HIP PEAS. And they're like these almost like cheetos but a healthier version. I I'm learning myself and this is new for me. And you'll learn on the disordered eating podcasts that we have coming up like trying not to categorize foods as bad and good even just now talking about putting fruit in the SMOOTHIES. Like I was trying to be careful with my language because I'm learning and I want to shift the way I speak to you and I speak to myself about food and you know what is your body asking for. And what is going to be nourishing to your body and so I don't want to call it like a healthier cheeto because then that's me implying. That cheetos are bad but Lisa. Who is the well necessities instagram handle at the wall necessities? And she's going to be doing the disordered eating series with me and I am so excited about it but she will help us understand. Why not? Why avoiding that type of language is important mentally for you if you if you have a weird relationship with food if you don't then ignore me but Hippies is the name and they're really good and my favorite flavor is Vegan White Cheddar. They have them at target and wherever. But that's what the snack addicted to like there for my kids but then I end up eating them all and my kids. Don't have snacks other snacks. That I'm really into right now. Which isn't what we brought up on the bobby bones child book Bobby Buncha but I will say purely Elizabeth Chocolate Sea salt granola. Oh it's so good. It's my jam rice cakes with almond butter and honey so good like sea salt popcorn. I like either boom checkup or skinny pop by them in a little single. Snacks is good. Nice Day that single snack size packs which are good and my kids also like those two and then I am obsessed with endangered species almond and sea salt. Dark chocolate right now. It's I just tried it here. And it's so good normally with the endangered species. I e the eighty eight percent dark but I was at the store and the Allman Sea salt spoke to me and I was like I guess I better buy it. I know it's only seventy two percent but that's okay I will live and oh it's so good so that perfect mix of like salty chocolate and definitely try that out if you got at the turnip truck but I know whole foods has it target. I think oh actually the bar we ate I got at target so boom I thought turnip truck but target has it. We fourteen minutes and sixteen seconds. And that's all the questions so like Bush. Should we rampal about for adults? You try to buy yourself twenty seconds and wrap it up okay. So it's awesome. Yeah if anybody knows Jessica Simpson trying to get her on the podcast amazing after listening to her book. I want to sit down with her and one time I saw her at a restaurant and I did not say hi to her. It was probably two thousand eight two thousand nine maybe could have been two thousand ten but she was chewing Austin at the. Og Chewing on Barton Springs the original and she was sitting in a booth with some people. And I was there with my friend Jill and we were sitting at the bar eating and I was like. Oh my Gosh there's Jessica Simpson and I literally had on Jessica Simpson shoes. But I mean I couldn't I didn't I like the rule you don't talk to people when they're eating or their with their family you realize you're going to ramble about fifteen minutes fifteen seconds so. I hope you'll have an amazing Tuesday. Don't forget that Mother Teresa quote that I told you about be kind to people say kind words because they're easy to speak but they're echoes are truly endless. Welcome to before breakfast a production of iheartradio. Good Morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to schedule the next step. When there's something you need to do, but can't do it right now. Put It on the calendar, so you won't forget it. The right time does roll around. To the extent I can I like to get things done while they're on my mind. Sometimes though we can know what the next step is, but we can't take that step until later. This happens with all kinds of things. Physician visits are frustratingly common example. The provider recommends that you come back in A. But then his or her office system only accepts appointments six months out. You don't WanNa. Find yourself next March, realizing that you need to visit and then not being able to get convenient appointment. So best to put a reminder on your calendar for September seen can make the appointment you want. You schedule the next, step. I've done something similar when making reservations for dinner at special restaurants or meals with characters at Disneyworld which book out exactly one hundred eighty days in advance and Philip fast. I've even made a note of when appointments for parent. Teacher conferences at my kids. Elementary School opened up. I have a lot of kids. It is a massive time savings to get the appointments back to back. And I'm not going to get them back to back unless I'm there on the system soon after it opens. And I'm not gonNA magically. Wake Up Tuesday morning remembering that the system is open. So? The note goes on the calendar to take the next step. As do notes to cancel things. If I sign up for a free trial that I'm not intending to keep long-term well best to cancel before I'm locked in. This is easy to forget. But not if I schedule the next step on the calendar. Scheduling the next step is also important when you're next. Step can't happen until someone else has done their part. If there's a form you need to admit that is being mailed to you. For example, it can be helpful to write a note in your calendar for win. The forms should arrive. That way, you're reminded to follow up if it hasn't arrived. If. It hasn't after you request the form again. You'll want to create a new calendar. Reminder further date your now expecting. I find that scheduling the next step can be helpful, even for vague aspirations or things without time. My husband and I gave our oldest child tickets to a musical for Christmas. Well actually we gave him a note saying he could pick the musical and we'd buy the tickets. We plan to go and late spring or summer, so I picked a random weaken late winter to check on his musical choice and to figure out a more concrete plan. This next step doesn't happen that particular week. It's okay. But the point is to nudge that promise backup to the front of my brain. Of. Course for calendar reminder to be helpful. You have to actually look at your calendar. I make sure to study upcoming weeks during my weekly. Friday planning session. I know that electronic calendars can send you a reminder automatically without you studying the whole calendar. But this doesn't always work. If the reminder is to call a restaurant at ten am on May first, and you don't actively plan that into your model of the week you might find yourself at that time on May first in a place where you can't easily make a phone call. But if you do build these calendar surveys into your life regularly. Then notes on the calendar can make you seem like the kind of person who has his or her act together. or at least you'll be the person eating at Cinderella's royal table at Disneyworld because you requested those reservations right on time. How do you keep track of your next steps? You can let me know if before breakfast podcast at IHEARTMEDIA DOT com. In the meantime. This is Laura.
