Rep. Zach Nunn: We Need a Strategy Against China Now

"Are we comparing apples to apples or are they just sort of making stuff up there because they know that there's a deficiency in our defense system under this president and this administration? Yeah, unfortunately, Jeff, this is kind of a repeat of history under the Biden administration. We'll recall back when he was vice president, Russia made incursions into then Ukrainian Crimea, nothing was done. When he became president, he said multiple times, there's nothing we can do if Russia is going to invade Ukraine. It's going to fall apart. Only now is he talking about doing something a year later sending defensive weapons like patriot Sam systems to defend against missile strikes from Russia. Here again, we see Democrats who are just kind of out to lunch on the security threat that's coming from very aggressive maneuvers out of China. And that's not just in, you know, the physical threat of balloons or a buildup of the People's Liberation Army. But in the financial sector, I now serve on the financial services committee, the amount of U.S. capital, our dollars flowing into China that are building their economy, paying for not just their war machine, but their oppression of Uyghurs paying for their extraction of rare earth material that is building batteries. And basically floating their economy at a cost of ours while our industries are pillaged from intellectual property theft from our ability to maneuver in the area and support our allies like Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. So here's one of the areas where I think we can have some bipartisan agreement. We need to have a plan now to address a threat from China and not wait for it like we did in Russia a year later to come up with a plan on how we're going to deal with a potential adversary in the region.

"Marquis is siney Professor of Chinese management at Cambridge judge business school and author of the new book Mao and markets, the communist roots of Chinese enterprise. Over the past decade, Chinese president Xi Jinping has initiated a series of hard line moves that hark back to PRC founder Mao Zedong. He justified China's zero COVID strategy with Mao's doctrine of the people's war, had his thoughts written into the Chinese constitution. Emphasized the absolute leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, CCP in all aspects of the society. Tightened control of the private sector, EG, cracking down on big tech firms. And even foreign firms and redoubled support of state owned enterprises. She himself imitates Mao on many occasions, including his gestures, dress and rhetoric. As she strengthens his grip on China in China's 20th party Congress starting October 16th, it is likely that he will redouble his Maoist focus. The depth of this connection between Xi and Mao has been hard to see as it runs counter to our assumptions about the trajectory of China's rise. For the last 40 years, we have assumed China was becoming more like us, abandoning the shackles of communism and adopting the free market. Thus, Xi's moves have been a surprise to many savvy observers of China, including top strategists in The White House. We need to drop these blinders and better understand the foundational Maoist principles that still guide China. Mao is the inventor of Chinese style communism and devised the unique socialist institutions that differ from both the Soviet Union and the west. She is following three key Maoist ideals in governing China and all indications are he will redouble these areas of focus following the 20th party Congress. One, the CCP at the center, two control of history and avoiding the Soviet path. Three. Rejuvenation of China. If we are to productively engage with China in the future, we need to understand the implications of these ideas on Chinese politics and daily life. CCP at the center. The Maoist slogan that she repeats frequently. East, west, north, south and the center. The CCP controls everything, may sound nonsensical. But the meaning is literally quite clear. The CCP unquestionably runs the state and also plays a heavy hand in the economy and other social affairs. The idea reflects Mao's belief that the party should be powerful in determining socioeconomic affairs and the long Chinese tradition of placing state forces above the economic ones, keeping the latter under control. Mao followed Lenin's ideas about one party communist rule and the CCP maintains leadership in agriculture, commerce, education, military and politics, which has been reiterated by Xi Jinping and written into the CCP constitution in 2017. The CCP even controls the gun or army. The People's Liberation Army does not report into the government, but the party.

"Where God knows how many marines lost their lives. At Guadalcanal and other places. We're migrate uncle fought. We're begging them please don't give the communist Chinese. A base. In the middle of the Pacific. We're begging them. So we have this slow motion, invasion of Taiwan going on now. That's what's taking place. Amphibious tanks and other amphibious weapons. Or machines doing practicing with them, they treat Taiwan's airspace like it's nonexistent. They treat Taiwan's waters like they're nonexistent. carrying them out as I speak near Taiwan. That's what they're doing. The Chinese defense ministry said that the lawmakers more lawmakers visited Taiwan good. Infringed on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. So there you go. They've already claimed Taiwan's sovereignty does not exist, nor does it territorial integrity. Slow motion war. Says the Chinese People's Liberation Army continues to train and prepare for war. Resolutely defense national sovereignty and territorial integrity and will resolutely crush any form of Taiwan independent separation in foreign interference. While Taiwan hasn't been excuse me, Taiwan hasn't done anything. But they will come up with this subterfuge that Taiwan has. Tyron premier said they would not be deterred by China's response to such visits by foreign friends. It's going to be tough because it's an island now surrounded, but they need to get as many arms as they possibly can. The people of Taiwan and turn all 23 and a half million people. Into militia. That's all they can do. So horrible, horrible thing. I'll be right back

"And U.S. House speaker Nancy Pelosi's moved on to South Korea, but the military action from China isn't easing up after that Taiwan visited Baxter's got more. It exactly Paul China's responding military activities are the largest and most far reaching since 1997. This is Nancy Pelosi has gone to South Korea. By the way, we're getting reports she is not expected to meet with the president. A Bloomberg Stephen engel says those military activities really stepped up though. Yes, Pelosi has moved on, but we're seeing the military exercises. Those are those 6 exclusion zones. Actually, Chinese state media has called them danger zones, where military exercises have been underway. Xinhua reporting the PLA, the People's Liberation Army has conducted joint navy air force and rocket force drills to the north to the southwest to the southeast of Taiwan. They've also quite alarmingly for the global supply chains. They've simulated strikes on major ship targets in the Taiwan strait and around Taiwan by land and sea based forces. China has warned air traffic to stay out of several what it calls danger zones around the island, Taiwan has protested. G 7 foreign ministers have issued a joint statement on the Pelosi visit saying they share a commitment to maintaining the rule based on international order and their concern by what they term threatening actions by the PRC, particularly the live fire exercises and what they call economic coercion. They say it causes unnecessary risk of escalation. And The White House has asked an apparently gotten a pause on a bill that the Senate was due to vote on tomorrow, which would make Taiwan a friend of NATO. A definite change in status of the relationship if that happened now Bloomberg's Eric Watson says shows a very sharp divide in the Democratic Party. There are people in Congress who are China hawks like Pelosi who believe that you need to stand up to Beijing, especially on human rights issues on Tibet and on Taiwan. And they have their own approach to this. So The White House is more cautious. They are going to the geopolitical strategy in place here where we're trying to get China's cooperation on Russia, Ukraine, on other geopolitical issues. The White House asked for the very least of the lay. I'm presumably wants it killed yet the bill was due for vote tomorrow. It has been pulled for now. Finland, Sweden have won U.S. Senate approval to join NATO. Kansas voters have defeated a bill that would have put limitations on abortions. "A reaction to Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan. The tayak is down for a third session. We are seeing weakness too in the Taiwan dollar. And some gains coming through in European futures while China's markets are fairly flat, so not really reacting too much there, but we have heard from Taiwan in the last few moments, also the military monitoring closely the situation in the Taiwan strait and Taiwan's defense ministry saying that China's drills in the area sabotaged the status quo. Let's bring back our chief north Asia correspondent Steve engel, who can fill us in a little more about what we've heard from Taiwan and also recapping what we heard from Nancy Pelosi about 30 minutes ago now, Steve. Yeah, I'm sure they've retired behind closed doors right now. Nancy Pelosi as well as Taiwan president Tsai ing Wen to have more put more meat on, of course, the bones of those pleasantries that they exchanged within the last hour at essentially Pelosi saying her visit was meant to show solidarity with Taiwan, as well as reaffirm Washington's commitment to Taiwan under the 1979 U.S. Taiwan relations act. And that her visit would show that confirmation that the U.S. will still back Taiwan despite what we've seen is rising pressure coming from Mainland China. Speaking of that rising pressure, China is out with fresh warnings while those two people were talking in Taipei in addition to already announced increase in military drills, the vice foreign minister in China says Tsai ing Wen is pushing Taiwan towards what he called a dangerous abyss China also now as we've been reporting warning global airlines to avoid flying through the so called danger zone. So those are its words. These are the 6 exclusion zones that Taiwan, China has announced that they will be encircling the island of Taiwan with 6 exclusion zones starting at midday tomorrow Thursday and that will go through midday on Sunday. So this will be after Pelosi is scheduled to leave, but they will conduct military exercises. They've also talked about live fire exercises coming through or across the Taiwan strait. A number of different moves of joint exercises between the PLA navy and the PLA air force as a show of disapproval, anger, if you will, of Pelosi's visit. But Steve, I mean, there's a body of thought in China some of the hawks and suggested that this reaction that we've had on a Beijing doesn't go far enough. Well, how far do you want them to go rich or I'm not saying you want them to go, but a fairly muted response if you want to call it that, at least the markets are taking a bit of a sigh of relief because you have to think about what the worst case scenario would have been. And of course, we heard in the run up to this visit or this rumored visit by Nancy Pelosi that the PLA would not, that's the People's Liberation Army of China, of course, would not sit idly by, but so far they have. There's not been any direct confrontation, and there was no direct confrontation with Nancy Pelosi flying in a late last night, arriving just after 10 p.m. under the cover of darkness. Yes, as well as a bit of a roundabout route from Kuala Lumpur. We do have a chart to show how Nancy Pelosi's plane avoided the 9 dash line that China claims to have sovereignty over that parts of the South China Sea, as well as of course the Taiwan strait. Her plane avoided those potential hotspots and went through an over Borneo and then up the eastern coast of the Philippines and arriving in Taiwan. Just in case, obviously. Steve John Lewis telling us earlier that this is, as we know, just very much exacerbating the U.S. China attention. Do you see what we saw in terms of some of the economic core moves that we've seen from China so far as being potentially a little bit more consequential than many might have expected. And I guess we were looking at what else could happen here. Well, I think there's likely to be more economic measures. So far, I actually think that some of the moves that they have announced have been fairly tame when if you look at the broader scheme of things that as well as the bit of rhetoric that has been coming out of Beijing, they're essentially banning Taiwanese exports to China of Taiwanese citrus fruit, as well as some forms of fish. They're also going to ban the export from China to Taiwan of natural sand, which is used in construction, used partly in semiconductors, but again as a guest we had on earlier saying, and just like China did back in 2007 when they banned the export of that sand to Taiwan. Taiwan goes to other suppliers. They went to the Philippines before. They will likely go to other areas as well. The bigger question is how long will these exclusion zones last around Taiwan? And the so called gray zone tactics that China will employ to further isolate Taiwan after this visit by Pelosi. They will go likely to greater extremes to diplomatically and economically isolate, try to isolate Taiwan after a result of this trip. Yeah, and the longer consequences, let's take a look at the medium term here, Steve with regards to this trip itself. I mean, at the same time, you've got perhaps the biggest geopolitical conflict going on in Eastern Europe right now with China, which really is being seen as a putative ally of Moscow, but could this turn China into a true

"There's a lot to unpack what's what's happening there, but the breaking news, Nancy Pelosi has just landed. She's a scientist that's right. Taiwan and I'm very torn on this Jack. So maybe you can help get me clarity and with it the audience, which is I'm no fan of the Chinese Communist Party. I think that our focus should be on the CCP, unlike how our focus is on Vladimir Putin in Russia. Some people say, well, Nancy Pelosi is showing this big show of strength by going to Taiwan. Other people say that, you know, we are unnecessarily agitating the Chinese Communist Party, which I'm torn and I'm torn for the following reasons. Not for political reasons. We know why Pelosi is going. I think she's just trying to get a midterm boost for the Democrat party. Let's also because it's a nice feather in her cap for the end of her career. And of her career and I also she's an asset of the Chinese Communist Party. A 100%. So I'm not even talking about the Pelosi thing. I'm torn in the sense of, is this a good geopolitical idea? Whether if it was Pelosi or whether it was Paul Ryan or whether it was Boehner or McCarthy or gingrich, is it a good idea to Pompeo to Taiwan or who? Pompeo talked about. I don't know if he went, but I know he tweeted that he would try to accompany Pelosi on this trip. So I don't know. You're the expert. So Jack, is this a good idea or a bad idea? Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan. Forget the politics of it. Let's pretend it's not Pelosi, which is obviously so nakedly partisan and political, of which I have no respect for her. Well, here's generally geopolitically. Well, no, here's the thing. If you're looking at geopolitically, if you want to help the people of Taiwan, you want to help the law by Jing the common man and women of China. Where's Pelosi on the tariffs? Where's Pelosi on understanding the economic leverage? Because that's the only real way that we're ever going to be able to achieve any movement beyond the status quo here because unless you stop the free flow of western capital to the CCP, nothing will ever change in China will absolutely the CCP controlled PLA. People's Liberation Army will absolutely clearly have a military advantage in the area. There's no question president Trump was very clear about this as well. That should kinetic conflict kick off. I mean, it would be bloody. It would be devastating. The entire island would be on fire.

"Look, it's a reality TV phenomenon. It's one of those things that I hear. I've never watched it. I have every year I hear so much about it, I feel like that I imbibe it through social media because it's absolutely everywhere, but ITV very cleverly using the end of a violent to announce the return of another reality TV staple, big brother is coming back to British TV from next year. This is as a format, which is continues other parts of the world, but actually stops in the UK in 2018. Yeah, look, it's an absolute juggernaut of British creativity so that yet I will roll my eyes. I am not a violent band. As I imagine you can understand, but I do get the idea that these formats, you know, global domination love it. Good for racing continue people watching over a long period of time, there's a good advertising model behind it as well. All right. Those are some of the stories that we've been looking at this morning, but let's go back to our top story on the program this morning, high speaker Nancy Pelosi expected to visit Taiwan, perhaps landing as soon as today. China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, is promised grave consequences. Joining us now is Bloomberg's global residents reporter Bruce einhorn, Bruce, thank you very much for being with us. Why is Nancy Pelosi going to Taiwan? Well, dancing Pelosi has a long history as a China hawk going back to the late 1980s. She's met with the Dalai Lama. Met with Joshua Wong of the pro democracy activists from Hong Kong. She's met with Uighurs from Xinjiang. So this is in keeping with your decades old position that Nancy Pelosi has advocating for human rights focusing on China's record, whether it's in Xinjiang, whether it's in Hong Kong, whether it's in Taiwan. So the other thing, of course, is I'm sorry, one last thing is politically, it's very important at this point for her to go because there's been so much talk about this visit that if she were to not go at the moment, then she would be subject to a lot of criticism at home from Republicans that she had backed down to Beijing. Yeah, so yeah, it looks perhaps like a kind of concession then. Okay, I can understand that, but what could she's retaliation look like these grave consequences? Well, there's been talking to Chinese media about the PLA, the People's Liberation Army, possibly doing something in response. Possibly sending warship airplanes warplanes right over the island. Which would then lead to the question of, well, what would Taiwan do in response to that? China has been fairly aggressive over the past few years. With its forays into Taiwanese airspace, but hasn't actually flown over Taiwan itself. So that could be something. The national security spokesman John Kirby from Biden administration talked about some of the things that the U.S. thinks that China might do. Such as launching military operations or making other legal claims about the Taiwan strait. One thing to keep in mind is that any sort of Chinese retaliation might not happen in the next day or two. It's important to think about this as a longer term issue. This is clearly going to be something that's a Chinese leaders are not going to forget and they're going to look for ways to retaliate in weeks, months ahead. We'll be watching the developments and all of that Bruce einhorn October business reporter. Thank you very much for that. This has Bloomberg

Pelosi Trip to Taiwan Tests China’s Appetite for Confrontation

"By far the most powerful country in the world in military terms. Without any doubt. But with a home court advantage off China's coast, China has put massive resources into anti fit missiles interceptors and submarines precisely in order to be able to kill an American fleet in proximity to their coast. Their land army is terrible, peel of people's liberation armies, maybe the worst land army in the world. But their missile corps is excellent. And the studies from the air force and the Rand corporation and the office of net assessment, which I used to do some work for a Pentagon. Say that those missiles are extremely good. Now, you can argue about whether you contract moving the ship 800 miles off the coast if it's maneuvering. Can you really hit it well? The Ukrainians managed to sink the Russian flagship, the Moscow, hundred kilometers off their coast and at the Ukrainians can do it the Chinese who, after all, did put a space landing craft on The Dark Side of the Moon, probably could be able to do it. So the risk of a kinetic engagement against Chinese missiles and the possible loss of a carrier with 8000 American sailors and all of our prestige, as you say, is not a risk that we want to take. W. Bush was the U.S. representative to China He then became vice presidents under the great president Ronald Reagan And while he was vice president his son the older brother Prescott Bush started doing deals in Beijing and he did deals with Chinese government officials He helped build golf courses He got involved in satellite companies And when Tiananmen Square hits George H. W. Bush was president and Prescott lobbied him aggressively not to impose sanctions on Beijing because he had some very big deals going And if you remember George H. W. Bush did not impose sanctions Flash forward through the 1990s Those relationships continue to grow then when George W. Bush became president Prescott Bush continued to strike deals but now a new generation of the family kneel bush that would be George W. Bush's younger brother started lining up deals with the Chinese government too He became a consultant to a Chinese computer company that was owned by the son of the Chinese premier They paid Neil Bush a $1 million a year while his brother was president of the United States There's no evidence that Neil Bush knows anything about the computer business And Neil Bush today is very apologetic for the Beijing regime He set up a bush center for the study of U.S. Chinese relationships that's partly funded by Chinese united front groups which are affiliated with the government Any complete apologists and we quote them in the book extensively making excuses for human rights uses the international conduct of China and in addition to that he's involved with 5 companies in Hong Kong or Mainland China that are all paying him very very well So they love those kinds of relationships because that's the way political power is expressed in China through families and through multiple generations It's really quite unbelievable You've also revealed a lot more new information about the Biden family One of the things you told me Sunday which is grabbed the headlines And shocked me Was the extent of this $31 million washed into the Biden family by the communist Chinese Can you explain that to us Yes So the Biden family has a series of deals involving 5 Chinese businessmen And what is troubling mark is not just the 31 million the fact that all 5 of the businessmen involved in those deals have ties to the highest levels of Chinese intelligence So we're not talking here so much anymore just about corruption We're talking about compromise We're talking about people who I would argue are under the sum or under the influence of China because of that relationship One of those is a deal valued around $20 million that is this private equity fund where he was put on the board of directors meaning Hunter Biden his valuation from that is $20 million That deal was put together by two businessmen one name Feng who at the time he arranged this for Hunter Biden was business partners with the vice minister of the ministry for state security in China This is the individual His name was ma Jian who was responsible for foreign intelligence recruitment why that didn't set off alarm bells who knows The other businessman involved in that deal he also transferred another $5 million to another one of hundreds businesses is a guy named mister zhao Mister zhao was business partners with the daughter of the former minister of state security This is the person in charge of the entire spy apparatus in China Then finally there's another 6 million that comes from a gentleman named Yi He sends Hunter Biden and James Biden Joe Biden's brother $6 million Yi is very interesting because his company called CEFC was housed at the time in a section of China that is controlled by the Chinese military and mister yee had been the head of a united front group that is funded by the People's Liberation Army of China before he started this company So very troubling relationships The other dad Mark real quick is that Joe Biden and Hunter Biden have blurred finances So even though it's Hunter Biden that takes this money in there's lots of evidence we present in the book that Joe Biden himself personally benefited because money flow to Joe Biden during this time too This is just an amazing and yet you see the multiple homes Joe Biden has he's got a very large home on the ocean in Delaware and yes Delaware does have some beach front I hope Bethany and so forth He's got a very large home in the Wilmington Delaware area he owns other properties and so forth And this is a man who went in the Senate without two nickels to rub together And he's been there his entire life The two years where he gave speeches and sofa but he acquires this well And I want to underscore with you when we come back Hunter Biden is making a lot of money.

"Mo Brooks Mo Brooks on Fox News Sunday cut 24 ago This is a bioweapon that was created in the Wuhan bioweapons lab of the communist Chinese party in conjunction with the People's Liberation Army It's going to be around for a long time and we have to learn to deal with it We can not shut ourselves up which is one of the policies that unfortunately has done so much damage to our economy at the instance of democratic governors mayors and to some degree president Joe Biden I didn't go to work I have to clarify one comment you made there that the coronavirus is a bioweapon We have not seen any proof of that Are there certainly been investigations into whether that's a possibility I have seen enough information Some of it classified some of it not Some of them consisting of private meeting with someone who worked in that program in communist China who was a part of their bio weapons program telling us what was transpiring It is a bioweapon It is man-made And it was man-made at the Wuhan bioweapons lab Now can I say that with a 100% certainty No But I can say that with a high high high high degree of confidence and that's my belief And ladies and gentlemen I've come to that

"Spreading internationally You mentioned Hong Kong two cases have been confirmed after genome sequencing analysis was done by the university of Hong Kong Now scientists in South Africa where this variant was first detected are saying this is clearly very different from previous incarnations Here's Bloomberg's Ian Fisher This is a highly contagious unclear if it's any more dangerous as I said this is very very new But contagious apparently Lots of different mutations not what we've seen before and worry that you know in the worst case scenario vaccine won't work again And now the World Health Organization will be holding a special meeting on Friday meantime the UK will temporarily ban flights from South Africa and 5 other African countries over worries about this variant These travel restrictions by the way go into effective noon on Friday This is basically a precautionary move to keep the spread in check and then on Monday South Korea will be announcing new steps to strengthen its quarantines Representatives from Beijing have told officials in Hong Kong the territory has fulfilled basic conditions for quarantine free travel with China Hong Kong chief secretary John Lee was saying the local government will be implementing further measures to prepare for a reopening and that would include a new health code and requesting more test for high risk groups Australia is sending soldiers and police to the Solomon Islands this in a move to help quell some violent protest Bloomberg's ainsley Chandler tells us what is significant about this move The switch from China from Taiwan to China is the main thing that's being cyclist They are calling for the prime minister to step down there because of that switch Very part of the country that is still loyal to Taiwan and that's what seems to be causing friction at the moment Now about 75 members of Australia's defense force in federal police along with the patrol boat will be deployed immediately China says there is no space for compromise on Taiwan The defense ministry saying that the People's Liberation Army is ready to crush any attempt to separate Taiwan from China at any time Meantime Beijing is warning the incoming government in Germany against meddling in China's internal affairs this has the potential to damage relations unless Berlin acknowledges China's claim on Taiwan under the so called one China policy earlier Germany's Chancellor in waiting Olaf shoals unveiled a program with surprisingly strong language on China It pledges to call out China on human rights and urges Beijing to loosen its grip on Hong Kong the plan also commits to backing Taiwan's participation in international organizations Global news 24 hours a day and on Bloomberg quick take I'm Doug Chris in New York Brian You know Doug Chinese regulators are now asking didi and its top executives to come up with a plan to delist from U.S. forces Now I don't have time to go into detail on this but this is a Bloomberg source story It's an unprecedented request and it's really unusual it's interesting in that just yesterday Bloomberg reported that the market watchdog in China had said that USD listings are bad for firms So we're trying to reconcile those two for you the time now is about 38 minutes past the hour It is time for global sports Well let's get to Dan Schwartzman Dan is PSG going after a Real Madrid youngster Yeah Brian L nacional says that if killing and bop does head to Madrid as expected.

"As we mentioned a new COVID variant first detected in South Africa has now been found in Hong Kong The prisoner has global news from the Bloomberg newsroom Doug Brian this variant is really stoking a lot of fear about it potentially severe fourth waves spreading internationally in Hong Kong two cases have been confirmed This is after genome sequencing analysis done by the university of Hong Kong Now scientists in South Africa where this variant was first detected say it is very clearly different from previous incarnations Here is Bloomberg's health reporter Michelle Cortez The question of course is whether or not we're going to see the severe cases the hospitalizations the ICUs and the deaths or if it's going to be a much milder kind of influenza type cold viruses So we have two pieces here We're worried about how transmissible it is and how dangerous it is once it gets into you Now the World Health Organization will hold a special meeting on Friday Meantime the UK will temporarily ban flights from South Africa and 5 other African countries that worry here obviously is this new variant The travel restrictions from the UK will go into effect at noon on Friday They are a precaution to keep the spread in check then on Monday next week South Korea will be announcing some new steps to strengthen its quarantine in China we have reports of three COVID infections in Shanghai and Hangzhou has reported to asymptomatic cases these outbreaks are raising questions about whether China's COVID zero approach will be sustainable in the long run Representatives from Beijing have told officials in Hong Kong the territory has now fulfilled basic conditions for quarantine free travel with China Hong Kong chief secretary John Lee says the local government will be implementing further measures to prepare for this reopening that would include rolling out a new health code and requesting more testing for those in high risk groups Australia will be sending soldiers and police to the Solomon Islands to help quell some violent protests these demonstrations are linked to the Pacific nation's challenge in ill or rather change in allegiances from Taipei to Beijing And on the subject of Taiwan China is saying there is no space for compromise defense ministry spokesperson You are while Wu qian said the People's Liberation Army is ready to crush any attempt to separate Taiwan from China at any time Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake I'm doctor Krishna in New York Brian All right Thanks very much Doug Our guest is ray Sharma un investment director of multi asset solutions for the Asia Pacific at Aberdeen So ray is just your luck to come on a program You're going to get asked about your outlook when all of a sudden we've got a breaking story a new coronavirus strain I know we don't know too much about it yet but it does look like it's going to be quite worrisome And we see people selling pretty aggressively now The nikkei down more than 2% On a day like today do you make any changes or do you sit tight and see what happens Yes thank you So I think it's a day where we would have to deal with some knowing unknowns and all of the unknowns out there We don't know how transmissible this is We don't know how severe the symptoms may be And we don't really know where existing vaccines are effective But if history is to be any guide that same reaction you saw happen when they don't have specific spread quite a bit And so we do think these markets will potentially look through rate for some evidence before taking a more aggressive and that's what we were likely to I think it's a bit too premature just to assume the worst case scenario are just based on a discovery of a new variant that has mutated So another big issue that everybody's been trying to discount and think about for next year is inflation What it will do And I suppose it depends a little bit too on how you see growth moving in various points around the world And you've got what you call a try speed look at growth for next year Let's explain Sure So we call it tri speed because we see pockets of the globe that we expect to accelerate and specifically we're looking at ASEAN which is Southeast Asia a solution is going to be driven from this year having low rate of vaccination to having a very significant increase in it As well as reopening and I'll explain to be opening in a bit later In terms of the regions that we think will mentee existing pace of growth it's Japan and India And then cases where we expect a motivation growth we expect that to come from north HS of a bit of markets Now despite the term moderation I don't think we are at the start of a down cycle The motivation is to bring growth slightly lower and we expect it to be above trend and why we do things so it's based on the reasons one fiscal support will still be at play There are improvements in the medical backdrop increase in vaccination following severe cases Improvement in treatment options such as antiviral fuel Reopenings will accelerate on the back of these as well as consumption during the process And what do you like as Ian more than those other two areas Yes certainly So Aussie and for the following reasons one we expect content to be one of the regions where economic growth will accelerate and while out of pockets will either moderate or maintain The increase in economic activity will drive a boost to corporate earnings as well as if you look at the valuations of archaea it's not a stretch Central banks in there are also slightly hawkish so they are looking to normalize and rethink our advantage Why do I say so Specifically if you look at countries such as Singapore and Indonesia they have high tilts and high exposure to financials and banks and that will benefit from a higher rate environment And the last piece is we are starting to see a growth of a digital economy emerging in RCM More and more digital companies have been included in index So it's not going to be just a traditional economic play on it We do see benefits for the growth in the digital space in RPM too I was musing earlier with a guest that it seemed like investors might want to see a more aggressive Central Bank to ensure that inflation does not become an overwhelming problem And thought why is it not working then that we're getting more aggressive central banks but equities are falling So I was asking the question is it perhaps just the valuations are too high And people are using this as an excuse to sell So valuations are definitely slightly on the higher side However here's our outlook on things One in terms of what Central Bank action entails we feel that it is the role of et cetera banks to provide guidance as well as provide proper communication The last thing I think that went fun to do is to shock the market as do something that markets did not anticipate It would.

"COVID outbreak since Wuhan And breaking news here now that we've had for about 15 minutes New Jersey governor Phil Murphy has been called his one another term he has now been declared the winter joining us live as Bloomberg's U.S. government executive editor and Washington bureau chief Craig Gordon Craig this vote was separated by just a few thousand most of the way Closer than people thought or was this as according to plan Oh much much closer than people thought All eyes last night were focused on Virginia We're obviously Glen junk in the Republican upset Democrat here in most of us myself included Our New Jersey team included thought Phil Murphy would probably skate to a pretty solid victory polls at him up anywhere from 8 to ten I think there were some size 12 And on a night like last night we kind of felt like all of our energy was going to go to Virginia and very little to New Jersey well lo and behold as we all learned in 2016 you can always be surprised on election night We started to see the numbers between chitrali and Phil Murphy tightening up quite a lot Went to bed last night with it literally a few thousand votes apart Woke up this morning with a few hundred votes apart and actually had a story today suggesting that some of the local elections commissioners thought we might be looking at an extended counting There was some confusion over the mail in ballots and some different issues and then loaned the whole AP shock the world a little bit with their call just a short time ago So Phil Murray Murphy will be the governor of Jersey for a second term It's a rarity for a Democrat No Democrat has done it since I believe it's the 1970s He ran a pretty good campaign against perhaps not the all time strongest opponent and gets a service second term down there in New Jersey Yes Tie this together now You mentioned Virginia I mean this is a jolting election for Democrats What are the messages coming out of New Jersey Yeah I mean Democrats can say this higher relief that they got their guy back into the state house there But they should take no solace from these results This really was a race that was really film Murphy to lose and he came darn close to losing it What we think happened there was Republicans were very very energized generally was an attractive enough candidate ran on some pretty solid Republican issues not overly sort of tying us off to Trump But did hit Phil Murphy very hard on the very high property taxes in New Jersey Phil Murphy was quoted saying look if taxes are your problem or New Jersey is probably not for you to really ran ad after Ed if you're at about that in the New York metro area and really hammering them on that And I think there were some voters I do feel the pain a little too much taxes in Jersey So while the Virginia race was highly nationalized I think the Jersey race was a little more localized but that said you had a lot of people that Joe Biden carried New Jersey by 16 points Phil Murphy wanted now by probably less than a percentage point maybe he'll get two percentage points out of it That's a 1413 or 14 or 15 point swing And that tells you that a lot of Democrats have voted for Joe Biden either didn't vote fulfill Murphy or stayed home and a lot of Republicans who maybe didn't vote for Donald Trump But Jackson earlier was a little more to their liking So it shows Republicans can turn out their voters Maybe when it's not Donald Trump on the ballot he does he's a polarizing figure He turns some people off He energizes others but I think Jack Jordan was able to run a race where he captured just enough of that Trump vote added a few independents probably that might have voted for Biden into his column and that made for a bit of an adventure for Phil Murray Murphy Craig real quickly The message here is and you hit it The GOP turned out voters They did and record numbers in in Virginia And the president today mister Biden said people want the Democrats to just get off the dime and start doing what the people want I mean this has got to be a wake-up call doesn't it Yeah I mean this election could not have been happening at a worse time for the Democratic Party Obviously we're all watching what's happening in Washington They can't seem to get stimulus bill done even though they control the house the Senate and The White House Endless squabbling Joe Manchin and Kirsten sinema the progressives the moderates they really I'm sorry they do look a little bit like the gang that can't shoot straight And I think the country said hey we put you folks in power because we wanted to get rid of Trump and some of the chaos around him and we feel like you're really not doing any better job than this So against that backdrop there's poor Phil Murphy and Terry mccaul I have to try to carry the democratic flag And I do think voters punish them for what is happening in Washington Big time wake-up call for Joe Biden and the Democrats I mean Frank they need to get their act together All right Craig thank you so much man You're so good We're really appreciate your help That is U.S. government executive editor Craig Gordon All right Brian go to you All right thanks very much It's time for the media review here Ed thank you Nikki today with a story that takara Bayou will mass produce mRNA vaccines from next year on a contract basis And this one from state media in China China has censored any mention of a star tennis players purported account of a decade long affair with a former vice premier John gore Lee Ugali The tennis star has pung schwabe it's a rare scandal involving a senior Communist Party member just a few days before a crucial meeting Also Chinese state media have sought to quiet online speculation of late that a conflict with Taiwan might be imminent Chinese social media have seen a flurry of chatter about a possible crisis with Taiwan countering that the economic daily urged the public not to overread a ministry of commerce statement that encouraged families to stock up on some daily necessities That was actually meant to address supply chain concerns And then the official People's Liberation Army daily newspaper denounced the mobilization rumors and the stories about Taiwan as a vile and malicious fabrication And a final note I'll do more on this next hour but the South China morning post has a piece It quotes researchers are saying it is the U.S. now that is stepping up operations in the South China Sea And as to look at the media Russia All right well let's get over to Vincent's cigarette and Bloomberg macro strategist discussing the market's news of the day I can put it in three letters fed right Oh yeah absolutely Every trader I spoke to this morning was expecting a more hawkish fed and I kind of was pushing back to them because I just didn't understand what the mentality was but that's where they were going They were seeing numbers They're seeing inflation numbers They were expecting the fed to get a little bit excited over it And as we saw today the market flipped from red to green because Powell stayed the course Data dependent And the big pushback when in Q&A was about the pricing for next year of two rate hikes and he basically said it's way premature to do that And essentially basically just said you guys are wrong on bright carry on Yes I think money market derivatives are pricing in 55 basis points right And we also heard from the chief that they wouldn't be overlapping so there's no chance of rates being hiked until after the Bon buying program is wound down so that gives us about 8 months for the fed to tinker with the communications policy So the question I put to a guest.

Under Fierce Republican Attack, U.S. General Milley Defends Calls With China

"Chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. Us general mark. Milley fended off. Perhaps the most personal and direct attacks of his career from lawmakers on tuesday as republicans blasted his coals with china and he's interviews for books critical of donald trump's presidency mainly was unshaken as republicans called for his resignation during an already contentious. Hearing that was meant to focus on the chaotic. Us withdrawal from afghanistan but repeatedly swerved into questions regarding the general himself when asked me acknowledged talking to washington post author bob woodward for a book that showcased mealey's role trying to avert a crisis over apparent chinese fears that trump might attack beijing in his final months in office the book detailed supposedly secret kohl's with general lease chang of the people's liberation army on the thirtieth of october twenty twenty and again on january eighth and said milley had promised to warn china. I if he were ordered to attack many confirmed the coles said they would not secret to us government officials and that he was acting on instructions from some of trump's top aides to de-escalate tensions. He acknowledged trying to send beijing a message that we are not going to attack you following. Us intelligence indicating china feared an attack. Milley said the colds fit within his mandate to ensure strategic stability. I know i am certain. "Now. Here's this article by Natalie Winters. Today. We've learned that a couple of weeks ago And apparently, there's a former Trump officials saying none of this is pretty much the par for the course. And I'm going to get into that one in a moment. But going back to this following this unique investigation into the origins of scientists scientific research papers, the whopping level of collaboration with the Chinese military will further concerns in the United States at the political class has surrendered to the Communist Party in China. Wow. Last week, it emerged that the ranking general in the United States armed forces agreed to tip off China in advance of a U. S led attack. Now we heard about that and again, my wow somewhat. Incredulous, right? I mean, it wasn't fake. I really I find this hard to believe, even though I know what's happening right in front of my face because I'm so disappointed. "That are true that he might just attack so take it from me. We'll be okay take it from me now. His counterpart in the people's liberation army is going to hang up that phone and you know he's going to report it to supervisors. It's not as if anyone in china in command of anything or anybody in china for that matter can just have a phone call with the united states and then that's the end of it. There's probably eighty five people listening in in china. And then there's going to be reports filed and there's gonna be lots of questions about what that means and what that means strategically for china. And when you think about that and now you see how we botched this withdrawal and if ghanistan the taliban has now in charge and what does the taliban that recently about china dave said china's their new best friend china's there besties they love china china taliban. They like this. they're buddies. Does that surprise you. Either because i would think that shaina thinks the united states right now is so incredibly weak and not only because that botch withdrawal. But because our own general's call china up to usurp the president united states of america and from china's perspective. We're they believe an absolute strength all the time. Nobody would ever dare undermine their president. Could you imagine somebody in china calling to undermine jesus ping and then living about it so the fact that the general would call them not once but twice to try to reassure them. Everything's gonna be okay. They hung up that phone at at at at least they thought man united states. What a bunch of wusses. What a bunch of weaklings may plays out in afghanistan and it confirms everything they thought which is why china's been engaging in a lot of propaganda lately against us a lot of propaganda. They told the people of taiwan. Hey look can count in america. They'll say they got your back but they won't have your back just look at what's happening in afghanistan right now. Oh china's been using all kinds of propaganda propaganda against us. China goes on their state run tv night after night and accuses. The united states of america of censorship of human rights abuses of creating corona virus in a lab. That you all these things general call them and the other reason why i think it's true today is because of the spin coming out of washington. Which is they're not denying it. They're trying to justify it they're trying to justify milley's call if you listen to what they're saying today. None of them are saying. Oh bob woodward had it wrong or bob. Woodward's crazy or bobbleheads is fake news or anything like that washington post fake news. Know what they're all saying is. Oh well i mean sure. He probably had a phone call with china. It's very routine very routine for them to do it. And they're all doubling down on that fact. Nothing in the report would raise concern. Kirby said today at the pentagon nothing. I've seen would raise any concern and over and over and over again today in washington you heard. Oh it's very routine. He might have just been trying to reassure china because China might have heard a rumor that the united states might attack them and and they were just nervous. All he wanted to do is just a just a calm them down. You know the way we can figure this out an immediate investigation. That's how an immediate investigation into general mark million. What he might have said the china and if as if what the pentagon today is true that these calls were staffed than i assume. There's a transcript. So let's see the transcript. Let's see it because if this really happened at the very least it means that generally should be fired and at worst it means he's a treasonous. Sob is trying to undermine. the president. United states of america because he believed like like the wackos on the view or msnbc or anybody else. That trump was unfit to be president. So what is it. How do we find out the truth. We do an investigation. That's how we do an immediate investigation on this because if it is true he cannot remain this position. there's no way he can despite president biden says of him. And that's the other thing too. What i can't understand here. The bob would robert a story. Nobody's denied it. Nobody's really rebutted it. All they've done a spin it trying to spin it to say that. Oh well listen. I mean he was just trying to do the right thing just to have a nice chat okay. Well then who was on the call who was on the call. And what did they say what was said. We need to have the transcript. We need to see it. Remember the transcript of the call. From the president and ukraine that transcript became the subject of impeachment investigation ultimately the impeachment of president. So i want to know what was said. Let's see the transfer the call. It was a routine thing of a general talking foreign military leader and his staff was in the room and if he was just having a routine conversation trying to lower tensions. It was nothing else to it great. Then where's that where's that for all of us to see. And if milly was acting on the instructions of then defense secretary mark asper will the match easy to prove as well if esperer had directed the general now to backchannel the chinese to reassure them that the us had no intention of seeking a confrontation. The question becomes what would make the secretary of defense believe that is that because asper also bought the bs line. That was being peddled by every day. Which is that trump was erratic. Trump was unhinged. Trump is gonna start. Were three just to stay and keep his job. It was s. Were believing that through remember masters another guy who completely on the way out. The door undermined the president and spoke to every single mediocrity possibly could so these back channel communications if they were routine should be very easy to prove but remember something. That's not how it spun. The bob woodward book in bob were book. It's spun in a way that here was the joint chiefs of staff chairman trying to save the world from an unhinged president who is going to start world war three either to keep his job or because he was just insane and millie was the only one who could possibly save it. So then ask yourself. Then who's lying here woodward's appro. I mean the guy's been reporting about washington for thirty forty years right up until now. He was hailed as a hero. So does he have it wrong. Who's got wrong here. The only way we can know is if there's an investigation immediately right now. Eight seven seven. Three eight one. Three eight one one. This is the mark levin show. The great one is off tonight. It's me rich. Zoli with you for marks hometown of philadelphia with a lot more question than answers today about millie and esber and the whole gang. How 'bout you eight seven seven..

WSJ Piece Teaches How to Read the Truth in Chinese Propaganda

"With this fantastic piece in the Wall Street Journal showing you how to dig through propaganda. How the Communists How Communist Now the Chinese Communist Party, CCP, How the communist Soviet Union how they work and manipulating the media where there's always an element of truth in his story. You know what it make stuff up out of thin air. You may say, Dan why they're Communists. They do whatever they want. If you don't like it, they kill you. Yeah. But they can't kill everybody at the same time. I mean, seriously, they do have to have some people alive like that's the whole point of having a country. Right. So once in a while you got to feed him a nugget a truth. Little small sliver nugget of truth, and you just manipulate the story. So if you read the story upside down, and you learn to read these propaganda pieces upside down, you will get to the truth. Eventually, they gave a great example. You know, Chinese propaganda say, you know, brave Chinese Communist People's Liberation Army saves eight miners and mining accident Then you find out later the Chinese government caused the accident do faulty safety standards and 150 miners died. Only eight were saying you're like, Well, there was a small nugget of truth in there, but the rest of the story was total bull. You get the rest.

"people liberation army" Discussed on The Glenn Beck Program

"This is the glenn beck program you know. We were Just having a conversation and it kind of hit me. Wow maybe maybe fao. She is being explored Because it gives the cover for the news agencies to not go after china but really make phao she and the united states the villain hair because we gave money. She gave money Against the law. I mean he did it right before the law was passed. But he knew it was coming and he knew he was giving it for gain of function. research And it gives them a way to not blame china which will keep all of their movie business and amusement park business cetera et cetera Going strong I mean i haven't seen too much of the anti couch -i vibes coming from the media even as they've turned on calling The lab week theory conspiracy. The there hasn't really been too much blame. I've noticed from the mainstream media on cheap. But maybe that's the next step of this. I mean it's possible. That's an interesting thought. It does seem like there has been this immediate jump to defend china at all costs on this and even when they're talking about the lab league theory it's almost always couched as well. This is a mistaker and it very well may have been a mistake. What was a mistake. Though was fighting it probably was correct. Correct correct this could have is really taking marching orders from from you know you gotta remember. Also why are we believing the chinese communist party about a lab run by the head the former head of china's communist party in the people's liberation army the bio weapons research. I mean that's also a little bad there. You know yeah no. There is a real reason to doubt the story that china tells us. And i think everyone you'd think the immediate would really understand us. I mean look at what look at the you know. The chinese communist party has done to the media in the country. They won't even allow you to search for historical news events in the country and somehow they get this defense from journalists who should be the most offended by what china does really. you know. there's no freedom there for press. there's nothing i mean. Think about this. They had the the tank guy Tank man with square anniversary. They can't search for it at all in china. They can't see it they don't know about it. It's completely deleted to the point that some of these other search engines in their effort to delete it for china deleted it in other regions to and people in other regions. Weren't able to see at least for a while. This is not this is not a a would not think this would be a country or a government that would find any defense from an open western media but they do constantly constantly. we're seen as the enemies. How many times have we have. We heard that actually. It's us with global warming and not it china china's at the cutting edge as al gore would say of environmentalism well as their imprisoning millions of people and pouring. I mean what what. What's the estimate. Something like ninety percent of all the plastic waste in the ocean comes from this is i just it. Doesn't it doesn't make much sense That we're always the victim We're always the villains and there are always the victims strange. That seems to make an awful lot of sense. When you look at why the left is trying to destroy us. They i think probably believe in this marxist claptrap but their employers believe china is the new model together. Those two things are deadly newsroom. See tonight at nine only on tv. The glenn beck program..

"Up dead. I want you to go to this piece. Everyone, please. You can check it out my newsletter or you can just go right to it. By my friend Kyle Becker and Becker News. Here. Is that the headline in the piece? China game Wuhan lab secret military activity. Led to a February 2020 covid vaccine, patent report finds Again. If you were going to make a bio weapon, you damn well better have a vaccine first. Here's the first quote from the peace and it's quoting some research by an Australian newspaper called the Weekend Australian. It says, quote there talking about this woman Zhao use N It, says Zhao, who conducted the research in conjunction with the Wuhan Institute, University of Minnesota and the New York Blood Center, was the first to file a patent for a covid neck Covid 19 vaccine on February 24th of last year. According to documents obtained by the weekend. Australian This was only five weeks after China admitted there was a human to human transmission of the virus. What were they doing? Building a vaccine and spending all this money on a virus that they had said Don't worry. There's no human to human transmission. Does that make any sense to you only if they were lying. The holder of the patent. The piece goes on his striking Zhao use end is listed as the lead inventor on the patent application lodged by the Institute of Military Medicine Academy of Military Sciences of the People's Liberation Army of China. Remembering the Tiananmen Square Crackdown

"Which came 32 years ago today, when hundreds possibly thousands, died when China's Communist Party had used the People's Liberation Army to put a bloody end to the student led pro democracy protests. 1989. The date is always a flashpoint and nowhere is this more sensitive than the restive region of Hong Kong. Already a prominent pro democracy activist, Xiao Hong Kong, has been arrested by police there for promoting unauthorized assembly. The authorities say this year's event has been banned due to covid social distancing restrictions. Hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong residents would normally packed Victoria Park in a late night vigil. The BBC's Danny Vincent has this report from Hong Kong. For more than three decades. Ivy lie has marked every anniversary of the June 4th crackdown. She keeps copies of newspaper articles from that day under her bed, she does not forget. Hong Kong is the only place on Chinese soil that officially commemorates those that died in 1989. When the Army opened fire on pro democracy protesters. It's murder. It's a bloody massacre of Tiananmen Square. This year, the police have banned an annual visual marking the day they threatened to imprison anyone who defies covid 19 restrictions. Ivy becomes emotional at the thought of not being able to attend. Activists believe the pandemic is being used as an excuse to silence dissent. That the which, over the years I think that not being able to go to Victoria Park, Hong Kong people will be very upset. Yeah.

China Sends 25 Warplanes Into Taiwan's Air Defense Zone, Taipei Says

"Is very far from unheard of for chinese military aircraft to buzzed the skies around the time on yesterday. However the people's liberation army air force stepped such provocations up a notch. Twenty-five chinese jets a record number into taiwan's air defense identification zone. This hefty squadron included eighteen of china's chengdu j ten fighters and four nuclear capable h six k bombers taiwan's air force scrambled their own planes to shoot the intruders off. But it seems reasonable to suppose that they will be back on. Joined with more on this by isabel hilton. Ceo at china dialogue isabelle twenty. Five aircraft is a fairly significant gesture by china. But this kind of stunt in itself isn't unusual is. How often do they do this. Well particularly this year. They'd been doing it a quite lot. They've been doing it. You know several times a week in recent times and its its military chest beating over fairly unpleasant kind I don't think it means that an invasion is imminent but it certainly it. It has a lot of advantages from the chinese perspective. It keeps the population on edge. It forces the china. The taiwanese air force to respond in some way they got so tired of scrambling a late last year that they decided that they would just monitor from the ground but again you know if you step the pressure up again then then scrambling has to happen. So it it. It's a long campaign of attrition and it's also testing the biden administration so there's a lot of probing testing and chest-beating beating happening at the moment.

War Games Suggest the U.S. Will Lose Fast If It Confronts China

"People's liberation army and the chinese communist party is clearly preparing for war with the united states. You never know that because we're too busy worrying about peppy. The pew and gina carano and the mandalorian we're not occupied anything like global thermonuclear war. God forbid we did something like that. So here's the first screenshot about what a were. I want to be clear on this. Given our current posture. Our current force alignment how we're prepared for global warfare. Now how these experts think it would go. Here's a quote from a military analysts. Talking about what would happen in are wargames now. It says at that point. The trend that are wargames was not just that we were losing but we were losing faster. We do these war games all time with china. Now we're losing quick. After the two thousand eighteen i distinctly remember one of our gurus of war gaming standing in front of the air force secretary and chief of staff and telling them that we shouldn't play this war game scenario chinese attack on taiwan again. Because we know what's going to happen. The definitive answer is if the us military doesn't change course with lose fast.

Don is both noisy and aggressive. Research by cisco's talos group suggests that gamero don is also a mercenary player in the criminal. Criminal market talos wrote in. It's worth noting that the operation the ns dc describes seems to be a software supply chain compromise as an s. d. c. tweeted. The attack belongs to the so-called supply chain attacks methods in means of carrying out this cyberattack allow to connect it with one of russia's hackers spy groups this is therefore a different matter entirely from the distributed denial of service attacks ukraine complained of at the beginning of the week the de dos attack targeted. China steps up threats to reclaim Taiwan

"China's rise as a great power it showing more and more attention towards reclaiming territory that long regarded as its own witness. Beijing's conduct in the south china sea. The east china sea hong kong the himalayan border with india. And of course. Taiwan fifteen chinese planes were detected flying into taiwan southwest air defense identification zone or on sunday taiwan's ministry of national defense said sunday's incursion involved twelve fighter jets to anti-submarine aircraft and reconnaissance plane. This comes less than twenty four hours. After the people's liberation army air force flew thirteen combat aircraft including chinese bomber planes capable of carrying nuclear weapons into the same region that was from the south korean english language. Every rung account of china's recent intimidation of the lovely liberal democracy of nearly twenty four million people. now one of my guest today has warned the australian defence department. Beijing is highly likely to attempt to take over taiwan using all means short of war as early as twenty. Twenty four ponder that a chinese takeover of taiwan by twenty twenty four. Linda jacobson is the specialist who delivered this assessment to the morrison government. A few months ago linder is founding director and deputy chair of china matters and she joins us from finland. Hello linda welcome back to between the lines. Thank you for having me again. Tom and joining us in sydney. Is natasha qassam. A research fellow at the low institute by the natasha. Thanks for having me tom now. Linda recently published. China matter explores policy brief. Summarize succinctly or faces tom. We've been talking for a long time. That taiwan is possibly explosive issue in our region. I'm saying it again now. Because the president xi jinping has made it clear that contrary to his predecessors he does not think we can leave the unresolved political status of taiwan to future generations. He wants to see movement towards what the chinese say reunification of the mainland and taiwan during his lifetime. That's the first point. The second one is that as of late. Probably because of some of the recent events which you alluded to among others the pfc's actions in hong kong. There's been a lot of talk of war of outright military conflict between taiwan and the pfc. I think these media reports have the problem into the wrong perspective. I think it is unlikely that we will see outright war over taiwan's future but we are very likely to see beijing making a move which is a protractive extensive intensive campaign of pressure using all means short of war to bring the taiwanese political leadership to its knees and agree to negotiate nothing more without preconditions taiwanese leadership has already said they will negotiate. But the pfc wants to negotiate on the basis that there is only one china in other words in negotiations have to end in some sort of agreement about unification so that's in a nutshell is what the policy brief argues. We should appear for this kind of extensive intensive pressure campaign using all means short of a case. i'm not. She heard linda's assessment. There of the chinese threat to taiwan china's military invasion of taiwan's unlikely. Highly unlikely so expect by gene to launch a step by step coercion of taiwan using all main short of war to force taiwan's latest into negotiations to etc unification natasha. What's your response. I'm inclined to agree with linda that this kind of phased coercion with many policy measures that china can easily scale up is the most likely scenario are and we can already see that happening. We can already see china attempting to launch multiple cyber attacks in taiwan to economically co west taiwan to try to put pressure intensive media coverage and even to infiltrate some of those local level groups to try to tan politics in a different way in taiwan. All these measures today have been relatively unsuccessful. China made it very clear that they wa against the current president citing win and that they were going to punish the taiwanese for her. These kinds of measures only encouraged the taiwanese people the vast majority of which do not want to be a part of china to turn out in support and fight to when last year. And at the same time we've also seen the country really come together during this covid nineteen pandemic and we've seen a really incredible of trust in institutions and in that democratic system of government. In a way that perhaps we haven't seen in other countries so i'm inclined to agree with these being the right measures but on the other hand i would say that the military option very much remains on the table not perhaps in the short term but from china's the incredible buildup of the people's liberation army that we've seen over the past decade has very much been directed at a potential taiwan
