The dangerous use of off label prescribing in times of a pandemic
"FDA requires prescription drugs to go through rigorous testing for both safety and efficacy as a result only a small number of drugs that are developed are ever approved for use and then only for narrow indications so take for example. A drug called Gabba Penton. It was approved in the early nineteen nineties as an anti seizure medicine but it didn't work very well. So experts began to promote it for use to treat all sorts of other conditions including pain bipolar disorder attention deficit disorder restless leg syndrome and Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome. It has not been approved for any of these reasons but doctors prescribe the drug heavily and Gabba. Penton is not the only example even if there is no proof and the FDA has not approved drug for a specific condition doctors can still prescribe it because here in the United States doctors are allowed to prescribe drugs off label in other words for reasons completely different than what they were intended for or for what. They were tested to treat. It stands to reason that Dr should only prescribe pills to treat conditions for which there is good evidence of effectiveness but that is not the case in the United States. These off label prescriptions account for one out of every five prescriptions. That means that twenty percent of all drug prescriptions are for conditions for which the drug was not approved so when the president tells us that despite warnings from the FDA. He's taking the Anti Malaria. Drug Hydroxy cleric win as prevention for COVID nineteen. It raises all kinds of red flags. Currently there is no. Fda approved drug to treat or prevent covid moreover several studies. Most recently in Jama have shown that hydroxy chloroquine has been shown to be in effective intriguing covid in effective. So how wide why? The president's doctor prescribed this drug went. Experts advise against taking the drug will because it was being prescribed off label for a non approved condition and the same is true for thousands of doctors who prescribed this drug for themselves for their families or for patients on the advice of a real estate developer. Who HAPPENS TO BE THE PRESIDENT? I suspect the public thought that the president knew something that the rest of us didn't inside information. Well IT TURNS OUT. He didn't the rest of US. Were reading the medical research and new. The drug was a very little use to those with. Covert the use of off label. Drugs drives up the cost of healthcare and exposes patients to unnecessary risks. Uncertain outcomes. Hydroxy chloroquine can cause abnormal heart rhythms and dangerous rapid heart rates. So doctors who've written these prescriptions without any scientific basis. Now have a moral duty to reach out and inform patients about the risk of medical treatment with hydroxy chloroquine and the lack of any benefit. And we need to rethink the policy of allowing doctors to write prescriptions for drugs that lack any proof of benefit at a very minimum. We should require doctors to inform their patients that they are being prescribed drug that has not been proven effective for their

Kentucky Derby 2019 Post Positions: Complete Listing for Every Horse
"Can see the post positions for the one hundred forty fifth Kentucky Derby. So it was very exciting. I still isn't it? The the number nineteen holders never been a horse went out of the nineteen whole it seems right? And I was looking to see who that is. That's spin off thirty two one. You're dead. Spinoff. It's over for you. I don't think that's ever happened. It seems like that's what we talked about last year at this time. Thirty two one for spinoff. No, no. Thank you. Roadster? Everybody loves roads to not everybody. When I say everybody. I mean, a lot of people it's gotten a lot of notice many people like roadsters six to one not everybody loves game of thrones. But lots of people do ratings big on that one. We'll get into that a little bit later on broadcast. I'm trying to watch my words carefully. But I liked the name win win win. I just do it. Just sounds like somebody who's just they're just so confident it's just bursting from the seems win win win is fifteen one. But all the way out in the number fourteen post position. What's it's very unreal. As war of will. Twenty two one. And that's always the toughest spot because all those other nine hundred horses immediately start moving over to crush you. So unless you just come out of there like a cannon shot you don't have much of a chance. Anyway, don't he's going to be along a little bit later today here in my boy, blue puff say is thirty two one out of the nine the whole I like that right next to superstar Tacitus tend to one. So anyway, I love that French that French name on that horse that everybody says, well, we're going to we're going to Kentucky size it and just say, plus q Parfait. So I guess that's what we're going to say. This reminds me of the Paul Penton days, and he was governor and he couldn't pronounce fousiya Chee Pegasus the horse that went on to win. And the governor was that the new chief fish? Yeah. Anyway. None of that problem. We do have a Japanese horse in this race. That's always exciting because it makes the global interest in the Kentucky Derby that much stronger when we get them from other parts of the world, so good on everybody for the twenty that made it, and of course, the listing of the horses for the Kentucky oaks on Friday. Their post positions were drawing yesterday. I have friends who are connected to chocolate kisses. "One capsule twice a day or a half a capsule three times a day. And then you do that for a week or two, and then I would say two weeks and then the following week. He cut it in half. Again, you keep on dosage in half you cut in half. He co two quarter quarter two third and then you get off the drug. Manny drugs. You can't just stop. There were complications with that there were consequences. So she was taking Gaba Penton. I should you know, that doesn't work, and that's why you're on so much, and she goes, well, can I stop and go. Well, you really have to discuss that with your doctor. But the truth of the matter is while it doesn't make you feel like you're zombie. And she goes, yeah, you're right. It's not helping to pay. It has very very minor affect if anything and I'm walking around half asleep deal. So I told her start using two supplements and to work with the doctor to wean off the drug because she was on way too many drugs. She was on many many he was like, oh a recipe of drugs like twelve different drugs. And I told her to take Alkmaar with L A, which is one of the shining stars of nutritional supplements and nerve X, which is a fatty will be one who stare terrific for nerve pain day, really work exceptionally. Well, I'll tell you study I read about three years ago. Doctors were reviewing the effects of Gaba Penton, which is also called Neurontin Moronta trademark name Gaba. Penton is chemical generic name. Doctors were testing to see if Iran was accused me of Gabba Penton. It was generic was helping their patients with nerve pain, and it didn't. So they added out car the supplement would out car, and what they said, well, all the sudden guy Penton is working. Well, no, that's not accurate. It wasn't Paktika pinton was working. It was that the alcohol was working. So we have a supplement called Alker with a L A that I take daily, and if you wanted in your nerves, and in your brain, you have to take it away from food because when you eat food, insulin is released an insulin will block Al car from getting into your nerves and getting into your brain. It'll still help your heart. It'll still help your muscles. It'll still help your body, but it's not gonna help your brain as much they'll be less of it reaching to bring those two pathways that out car uses to get into the brain. And one of them would be blocked by insulin. So I tell people if you're going to take the alcohol with Ayla ticket generally an hour before a meal or two hours after when he insulin dies down. Now before we go any further, Dr Z's as another health professional that's joined the invite scientific department. So that's one you should talk to your about. And we. We have another medication called Trasimeno, which I would want you to mention to your veterinarian, and that's another kind of sedative medication, but it's not the same as the ones you may be used to historically with your pets were just awesome right on there. It's super super safe. So do you mind just talking about the dosing difference for rightous versus sedation, and how often pet owners would have to give this medication before they go to the veterinarian? Yeah. That's a really great question. And I want to make it really clear. Thank you for bringing that up that we need to get the Gabba pen in kitties ended dogs. There's a part of you that knows you could die every day, and there's a part of you at accepts it if it wasn't gonna pension would have been something else. So I'm interested Carmen. What we know about how people are getting the drug and why it's so hard for law enforcement to track and control. So with the person I featured in my PC era Smith, she actually managed to get the drug through a prescriber. She went to several doctors, I managed to get a prescription. And then from then on, she ultimately started misusing the drug. I also spoke with some other women in the recovery center where Sierra was that as well. And they also. Said that they received it from prescribers, or they are received it from other folks that were using other medications and abusing them, and and they took it in order to stave off their withdraws, kind of make them stables between hits of their preferred drug and in asan's according to the Ohio board of pharmacy of three hundred milligram pill of Gaba Penton can be sold for as little as seventy five cents. So even if you don't have a connection with the prescriber or with someone who has the drug, you can easily get it from a dealer with very little money. And what do we know about the long term effects of of abuse of this drug? Do tell us a little bit about that. That's still something that's a question for for doctors in in terms of trying to get a hold of what's really going on. So one of the big questions is exactly how it enhances the high that's created. By an opioid. And although we haven't seen a any deaths that we know of related to Gabon Penton and specifically Gaba Penton overdose because it is very hard to overdose on it. We have seen a large proportion of overdose deaths in some states that reported the have Gabar Penton in their system alongside another substance. Well, that's Carmen. Harada Rodriguez. "It's great to have you for having me Anthony. So tell us a little bit about Gabba Penton what it's normally prescribed for. Give us a little bit of a understanding about this truck. Sure. So got a pension at the medication that's approved to treat epilepsy and pain related to nerve damage, which happens in folks with certain conditions, like diabetes and fibromyalgia. It also been used by a lot of doctors to address other health issues like mood stabilization technique and for folks that are actually in recovery from alcohol dependence. Alright, right. So how are people misusing it? So people are misusing it by pairing it with opioids, in order to enhance the high of the opioid, they're also using it in order to kinda stave off the effects of withdraw or just kind of have a euphoric effective taken enough of it when they don't have their drug of choice. Now you wrote about the growing problem of Gabba Penton abuse, Athens, Ohio. How did you come across the story and and what did you see when you went out to investigate? So I came across a story by looking at the counties that the CDC identified as being at risk of having both an opioid addiction outbreak and an HIV outbreak. And from there on, I spoke to. Different people and did some research and happened to find Athens, Ohio, and Athens is in terms of the Gaba Penton misuse problem really beginning to understand what's going on bond force. Mint officials are still trying to grapple with how to handle it, especially because it's not a drug that's scheduled by the federal government or in their state health counselors. There are trying to make sure that people that they're carrying for recovery are actually adhering to their recovery, especially when Gaby Penton isn't a drug that they particularly, I'm sorry that they are that they regularly test for when screening for any drug you. So it's something that's still very much on the cusp of the democ that we're seeing across the nation. Listen to a little bit of sound here. Here's Doug Crowley.
