"Up three bucks and weekly parking will be $53 more than new rates begin on June 1st, the airport says the increases are to support garage maintenance and keep up with inflation. And that's come of forest Michelle Esteban. Not everybody has your kids best interest in mind when they're online, but it's not just hackers and child traffickers. Big tech firms are actively funding and advocacy group that opposes laws meant to protect the privacy of children. Cristiano Lima is covering it for The Washington Post and spoke with northwest news radios Taylor van seiss. Cristiano, what is this group known as net choice? And what's their mission? So no choice is a trade group that counts a number of major tech companies as members and receives funding from them so that includes meta, Google, Amazon, and they're one of several groups that receive funding from these companies that have been lobbying pretty aggressively at various states around the country against proposals that are seeking to require companies to build safety by design features into some of their products. And these are largely modeled after a law that was just recently signed in California that now a number of state lawmakers around the country are trying to replicate. Child safety is one of those things that's really easy to get behind if you're a politician. But who's funding this? Why are businesses opposed to these kinds of rules? That's right. So these groups are funded by a number of major tech companies. And they have raised concerns that the proposals would actually not set out to do what they say and that they could force companies to end up collecting more data on users and undermine some of their existing child protection efforts. And so this is an argument that they have been taking to the states, but they have been extremely active in a lot of these sessions. It is the state lawmakers, some children's privacy advocates, and then a bunch of groups that do receive funding from these companies trying to hash out their differences, but a number have been very active in trying to basically just kill these efforts. They've been active, but are they successful? So there have been a number of states already this year that were considering proposals, but that did not make it through. So Maryland just recently their legislative session closed. They had been considering a bill that made it through its assembly, but it died in the Senate. And one of the key lawmakers that's been leading the push said that the industry lobbying was one of the driving factors for why it did not advance. Finally, christiano, I wonder how this jives with the public perception or public messaging around these companies. Amazon, Facebook for some people, they're a trusted source for all kinds of information. Yeah, that's right. And these companies have taken a number of steps to boost protections for kids on their sites and provide parents with more controls, and some of them have engaged with policymakers at the state level. Google in discussions with Maryland policymakers said that with some amendments that they saw their own legislation as potentially workable. And so they've been trying to engage directly in addition to some of the lobbying from groups they fund. Because I think they're well aware that trying to neutralize efforts that ultimately are aimed at protecting kids online is not going to play out politically well for them. The group we've been talking about is net choice, one of a number of different groups that are trying to put an end to different child safety bills and various states around the nation.
