"Welcome back to the coastal. Athlete. Program I'm your host. Shep today. We are joined by very special guests. We are joined by the record surf operations a US Navy veteran. Therapy advocate, a waterman, a good friend of Joe and be good friend of mine, because we're all part of the one more way, family, Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the show Rob Garnett Rob. How're you doing? Then fantastic thanks for having me am. Champ and Danny Danny met you before but SHEP. We've talked a couple of times on the phone, so it's cool to be some of the zoom. At least on Zoom. Danny is our producer, and so he's going to be helping out doing the editing and mixing the episode down and things like that Joe is going to be joining the podcast just a minute. He was transitioning from from pork. Chop actually up to his apartment. He's coming back doing some surf therapy sessions. My guess would be out of Pendleton or something like that. As usual on Wednesdays, Joe is on the road living the mission so rob. Before. We get too deep into asking you. Questions I just have to ask when it came time to transition out of your career in the military, did you? When did you know that you wanted to get into surf therapies specifically? And when did you know that like this was going to be a special moment? I. Think when I was so I retired from the navy and two thousand fifteen and so that was kind of win Wave, actually becoming nonprofit, and so I had a couple of buddies Alex and Kyle. We can talk about later. That were trying to get going. They've been doing it kind of. guerrilla-style for before getting official, and so I kind of knew about it before retiring. And then it kind of kicked off. For ME I. I was volunteering here and there with more ways. I had some other gigs so right when I retired I started doing government contracting jobs I did that for a couple years before spending a lot more time volunteering than later coming on. As employees. So, Joe I just ask some general questions. Trying to do is cut those questions and stuff at the back, so feel free to take the lead, and you have the floor sounds it sounds like you talked a bit about something about diving for the navy and then sports. Now we're talking about why I came the navy. Sorry to repeat it, but. I came in hoping to be Navy diver. I've been a commercial diver for about six months in Galveston. Texas after drop Nettie. Collagen thought that'd be a good transition and When I tried to join the navy, they said the Dow closed and that they dove at butts that I should go try that. Sounds like a good idea and so. They had me take a job. That would allow me to go to buds. became a parachute rigger, so I went to school i. By Mos got my. Parachute rigger on. And then off to buds I, not really no one else doing. My parents were hippies so military people. No one wants to be joined. The Navy so really did not get into. So I imagine was a little bit of a surprise to show to buds. Learn what that school was or. Just just the suffer faster not quite ready for nicely. I imagine imagine that's quite interesting. SUFFER FEST! I also can imagine that doing the work that you did. Know you and I kind of a little bit of your background. I've imagine that really helps. Set you up for the mission at one more wave and getting on top of things and getting things moving. You maybe talk a little bit about that. Of maybe some things you learn from the Navy that you apply now at one more. Share just. Learned a lot towards the last couple of years at Miami my time in the service. How can help people in much really from? I've been injured several times while on active duty at spent time at the. At Naiko which I know, you're not talking about for jokes. The National Intrepid Center of Excellence Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic says Maryland runs, and so I started my treatment probably. This is probably two thousand ten zero five years before I retired, and so I have a lot of time to spend time with other folks that had had you know whether it was PGA s or All the kind of things that were happening to people are not super physical, but burying paxil sleep issues, and so I got exposed to lots of different therapies, and I just knew man. This is can't wait to spend more time doing this. And, so I was really excited because I learned all these things in the navy, but how can help other people at learned a lot about the va have across his work for compensation took care people how some days are better than others. Some states are Oracle, and and what? I didn't realize. Your percentage rate affects how you get treated to I was treated well, but I'm on a different ratings on people's. It's tough so I definitely learned a lot, you know. Early on about how to help other people do this and it really as you've seen Joe out. Watch people's faces. When you get to give him some equipment whether it's a board or a boogie board or people that have had nothing. He's got a wet suit like our friends in. 16 Marines arrested in human smuggling investigation

"He did you see the story about the sixteen marines that were actually arrested in this human smuggling deal I was stunned to learn about all that maybe I should have been done but it was an interesting story I have to say and I wondered if any more Deets on it if you know what I mean I did read that story I mean their stores all over the place about it happens during they were the marines were arrested during what was a typical morning formation at camp Pendleton for alleged involvement in a couple of different things a lot of it had to do with human smuggling and then the wrist drug related things as well according to what the press release from the marine corps said they that's what they do when they find you know when they're investigating this eight other marines were question about their involvement with with drugs and the arrests were somehow related to something that happened this month where two marines from camp Pendleton were charged with transporting undocumented immigrants for financial game yeah like so that's not good and that's the US Mexico border that we're talking about and so once they nailed them they started to look into this what happened was supposedly they were offered someone they were off to pick someone up four thousand Bucks and drive them away from the border and then that would be you know smuggling out of the border that that's what they were question for and that's where the money exchange hands and we'll see if it's any deeper than that but sixteen is a pretty big number so maybe some of them aren't directly involved maybe they are like I said there's a reason why you use the word alleged because we have to see how that plays out but it it it doesn't look good let's put it that way and it was kind of eye

"Southbound Camp Pendleton area, it is. Massive and I'm talking to massive backup. Like now on the southbound five, let's get a free way. Check in with Tom TRAN. That's a live shot of. The literal parking lot at this point on the southbound side of the five traffic stopped about a mile before the the standoff situation, which is right near the Las Palmas road through the Camp Pendleton area and traffic quite literally not moving at all. I'm looking at a mile and a half to two mile delay of just traffic not moving in as you heard from the officer. There's no good option around this. If you're trying to get down to the ocean side, San Diego area traffic is not moving and it's a waiting game at this point. They don't know how long the suspect is going to be in his vehicle. They don't know how long this is gonna take. There are no great options to get into San Diego at this point other than taking the seventy four the Ortega highway all the way over towards the fifteen and then trying to get the San Diego that way even that has its own problems because there's a crash on the fifteenth southbound into Mexico South of Rancho California road that has traffic backed up the fifteen to fifteen split. So at this point, it's just a huge mess. Trying to get down in oceanside or San Diego until they get this standoff situation to control that five is not moving too. Dangerous situation. They don't know what state. The suspect is in police are keeping their distance. And now the northbound side of the five starting to see slowing. I see traffic jamming up unless post. So I don't know if this is looking loose situation going on or if they're stopping traffic on the northbound side of the five, but a huge mess on the five southbound heading down in Camp Pendleton, we have problems that are not this five situation. The northbound side of the one ten at Vernon we had a crash here. That's clear out of the left lane. And the northbound side of the one ten th six a multi car crash moving off to the right shoulder backing up the drive from the one zero five northbound side of the five at San Diego stadium web semi crash reported in lanes. That's got traffic. Busy from the ten over on the east bound to ten at fair who've a stall blocking the truck lanes backing up the drive from Lincoln avenue and overdone -tario. Well, I don't know nearly as much as I should. And that is your background. I was watching a documentary on you. Something along the lines of being Austin Pendleton something along those lines. And the impact you've had on the world of theater is is remarkable. I mean, it almost seems like I've had many wonderful actors on my show. I don't know that anyone has been like you as far as the love, and you can't draw the line between, you know, theater and something else, you are all about being an actor being in the theaters that is partially correct. "He is a legend of theater of the big and the small screen, and I'm almost positively. Sure, anybody that's come across his path has absolutely fallen in love with who this man is. And what kind of sweet soul there is behind the man. I do want to say a few things before I get into the interview with Austin. I'm very proud not to Pat myself on the back, but I'm very proud that I've gotten to this point. In a time. When there's so many podcasts in there's so many people that just have a podcast simply say, they have it and they do so without pride and effort in in just in passion. It's a sad way to not only go through podcasting. But to go through life. I don't know. I always felt that if nothing else I've brought forth. Unbelievably awesome, guests that have the most phenomenal journeys to tell you. And that's the one thing. I will always be proud of that. And the fact that I'm very passionate about this. And I've done it through just not people that are popular or people that stand out. I just got people throughout my life. That have moved me their workers inspired me every single guest. I have is a result of that. I have not paid one guest. I have not paid people to give me reviews. I have not paid people to inflate my podcast a true good podcast stands on the final. Quality product. It does not stand on fake and bogus numbers that you paid people to put their all that being said, I'm very proud to get to this point one hundred wonderful people that have come into my life and giving passion behind this passion, making podcast behind putting things like this together. I just I'm so very grateful. And I know it's so generic because everybody over uses that word I sincerely like so humbled by everybody. That's come on my show. Believe me there's been it's been very difficult because to get people that you love it admire. It's not always easy. So I want to thank all those people. I want to thank the wonderful Austin Pendleton the in shows a little bit long. I want you to hear Austin and Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind. What a wonderful setup seen to this wonderful interview. I thank you for downloading. I think you for streaming. I thank you for coming back. I have. So much more ahead. You have no idea. And I just I have guests booked through this spring. There are going to knock your socks off before. I let you go. I did want to say a quick story Austin's going to tell this better than I can you know, we assume we and I'll say accurate because Austin is an actor is also a director. We assume we watch these movies so Austin's in many movies, one of which is my cousin Vinny, which is everybody's favorite. But I have to tell you. What I never knew. And what part of the blessing of getting to meet somebody, right? Because that's what you're doing. You're the equivalent of of having a beer or a Cup of coffee and just talking with this person. I never knew how much Austin early on in his life struggled with a stammer struggled with a speech a deficit. And that's the exact part that he he they wanted him to play in my cousin Vinny. And I can't I can't even imagine how I mean to eat you're asking somebody who's gotten not got over. But continuously struggles with that issue to now go back into what they've spend most of their life trying to overcome. I had no idea. So now, I kind of I don't feel guilty watching the sea by any means. But I guess I have much much more appreciation for Austin as a human being in more. So as a professional to do that. And he goes on to tell with much more detail had do the rest of that. But I don't know. I just it just one of the things that fascinates me. When you get people that you love on this show, and they tell you things in my guess, I would say for the most part. No what I think of them. It's not fraudulent. It's not you know, forced on them. They could see and that and that really strikes beautiful chord within me. So I won't waste anymore. Your time. Thank you for everything is I'm to leave you with a scene from youthful mind, and the awesome Austin Pendleton after that talks who. So now that I know the.

"So where Pendleton where fake Pendleton university and it's actually, I guess, like we play it off like we're telling us that urban legend to a bunch of people or something like that university. Yeah, fake university urban legend, but it's a weird like are we? Are they talking about the thing that just happened? Or is it like, are we just so happening? I think we're just telling the same. Everyone's telling urban legends all of the time. You know, it's weird. It's not unlike the opening drew Barrymore the being a screaming and they start talking about it right in the first scene school. It's weird that it's like that it's a little strange, but at least in scream it makes logical sense that they'd be talking about it. Unlike this, nobody knows that women's dead yet it's an, it's Michael Rosenbaum of smallville fame and lex Luthor lex Luthor, and he played the flash on the Justice league. Did the voice did a really good job. Everybody if. Oh, in the animated show, he could bed t shirts and people talking to you. Now here I am here. I come. Of, yeah, it's been a movie. Yes. Stay tuned for worst of twenty eighteen. So yes, he's telling it's Alicia Witt and the killer herself or Becca, gay hurt, and Jared Leto. Oh, that's right. They're all just like sitting in like a campus, like commun- chatting about it should be urban legends you, yes, you know what I mean? Like much like the tiny toons go to acme Luna versity where your concentration is in cartoon gags. It's like if David fincher directed an episode of friends. Yes, you're absolutely right there on the couch, drinking coffee, huge friends as coffee mugs by the way you see the size of these fucking fit a fucking pig. They're getting. So I married an expert or you'll fall in that lot around. Hello. So, but yes, he, it's like Jerry does playing Parker, I wanna say or something, whatever shit. Leto piece of shit, I think was Paul hall. Oh, oh yes. Something like that. Or is it that's he played Paul Allen in, oh, maybe. Or something. But he's like, oh, he's a blowing up. Michael Rosenbaum spot is like, oh, I think the way I heard it was like this, that and the other thing you fucking dick? Yes, it's who is the bigger fan of urban legends, what. Colossal losers. Oh my Lord. What a rural legend. Some scarecrows that come to life. Actually, I got a few. I got. I remember growing up in the countryside now one is great. It was like, hey, you know, Dan, by the soaps creek there. One time may get this big city mafia guys, buried some money over their second or. Better out near digging. Exactly. Second rule legend. Yeah, that's the it's a field. You landed there. We in a rural legend Kevin. Did you ever hear this tale? There was a thing. I forget what the name of the dude was, but it was a thing where it was like, and this might be just a universal urban legend. And I, I didn't major in urban legend ING. So I don't know for sure that wasn't one of your electives and now, but there was a thing. Do you recall the story? It was the thing where there was a guy. He was walking down like a role rural road at night with his wife. His wife was hit and killed by a drunk driver bet away and dude. So every night at the same time, this guy walks the the road back and forth with an axe looking for the car now is that was and I forget what they called this dude, but it was like, yeah, let's go out to that road Ziv. We could find Mr. TIs Dale or whatever. And kids would like, I don't know if kids actually would like hop in the car, but it was always always should go out there. Man, we should totally go out there. Find Mr.. TIs Dale, they're drunk and hit them. There's k. herb real good. There is a guy around where I used to smoke weed in the Bronx who would just come up to you and push his fingers against his lips asked for a cigarette, all urban legend. "All right let's talk first. Of all crtv. Right, now is a cover the Pendleton, murder trial live, switches Markle really remarkable Illinois did not want cameras in the courtroom. For well for obvious reasons 'cause, it's Dylan oh and there's a, lot of, hijinks but you know they finally have allowed the man and it's at the judge's discretion very few judges of okayed this but in this very high profile gang case I advocate for this because I think an advocate for greater transparency in terms of how we in our business in the local. Media cover gang involved shootings because it's just too easy to throw. Every gang shooting or the violence in. The? City into a basket that makes. Us all feel better like it doesn't affect as it. Has, nothing, to do. With us it's those people do shooting. Those people right and it's not as a penalty Was this kid right in your old girl who was who was just with a group of her friends after school in a park have nothing to do with this right and so this is the kind of thing that can happen and that's why this is such an important portrayal obviously. The prosecution here says that this shooter was attempting to shoot another. A rival gang member which was known. To? Hang out at that particular park And so this was a king or you know you hear back and forth all the time and I think police tend to pretty quickly put out information about, whether or not a victim has. Gang? Affiliations somehow in an effort to suggest oh well you know, the this isn't as though it's totally random you. Know, this is there was motive here these aren't totally innocent people who are getting shot but yeah you're right it does tend to kind of create This kind of overall view of. Shootings in violence certainly an idea Pendleton case this was a bright young girl who was doing nothing more than hanging out with friends at an. Unseen, seasonably, warm day inner, local park and into your point row. I think, you only have to watch a. Couple of minutes of this trial is we're in. The first, day here. You can watch it live on crtv The prosecution's. I witness was young woman Calin Jones was a classmate of ideas who was who was in that park at the. Time of the shooting and she just Yeah it was gut wrenching to hear, her describe these friends just, spending time together and all of a sudden you know pop pop pop pop, everyone's running. And she turns around and she sees idea running but slowing down in originally she thought she thought idea was. Was joking around. Or something should come on come on we don't get time to, play, around, and she told jurors. Today that. That's one idea, said, I've been. Shot, I've been shot I think. I got shot and she thought she was joking says no no you're gonna be okay come, on and she, said no I seriously I I think I got shot it is heartbreaking to think that this. Girl who ended her life ahead of her and just you know this this this great kid who. Just had just in the wrong place and look at what happened and. I think we as. Reporters have all been in those those courtrooms at twenty six in California we've all heard that gut wrenching testimony any of hundreds of murder cases it. Is different though When there's a TV camera. In there and and Chicago as a whole can can see how a split second moment a split-second. Decision by a shooter a moment enjoying friends with the park can turn. Instantly become something awful The other. Interesting thing in the, Jason Van Dyke trial he's the officer accused of murdering Liqun McDonald a cameras are also going to be allowed in that case in a limited. Fashion there's very tight restrictions and what can be shown it, can't be shown but I think that's another opportunity for people who can't get down to the. Courthouse to see how how the Justice system works right for themselves and that's going to be an important one because you know murder, conviction that, is highly unlikely based on, the facts of that case as we know them, now as we've seen them do regardless of how how people feel about seeing that video and seeing that officer empty his service weapon sixteen shots most of them hitting him most of them, hitting while, he's on the ground it's as as dramatic as that is To get a murder conviction requires, a lot of things that you just Based on the fact that we know Yeah right well you wonder if the idea Pendleton thing will will also seeing, this trial as you point out Ben we'll make people want to come. Forward more in crimes and help police and I know why there are so many reasons. To distrust police eighty fear. Of retribution getting shot your? Own family you know, what I mean those are serious stoppers but maybe just maybe when you see how lives are ruined and families torn. Apart and you see it like this I just hope that there will be some more cooperation because there's less than a twenty. Percent conviction rate in murders right now and there's an anonymous tip line their ways to do it that would help police because people in, those neighborhoods do know they often no Conviction rate you mean clearance clearance rate I'm sorry I'm sorry Clearance rate of the HAMAs was. Down at the park named for idea Pendleton last week photographer and I went down there on the, day, that they started picking a jury just because we thought boy it's. Taken five and a half years to, get to this point they've named this beautiful park after her which. "Our brandy rolled her eyes looking at her phone but to the idea of being able to be rid of him and settling. This was enough. Brandon got in her car and started to make the thirty minute drive from town to his farm. She walked up to the front door and held her hand up for a moment pausing wondering if she should just turn back now. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Mr Pendleton opened it. He looked quite and thin sickly as though he had not been feeding or taking care of himself what she asked him curtly his face furrowed. I he was going to cry. This what you did to me. Mr Pendleton reached for something behind. The door brandy screamed and started tobacco away but just as quickly. Mr Pendleton pleased. Both barrels of his home shot gun in his mouth. And explosion was founded most of Mr Pendleton head sprayed all over the front hallway as his body fell to the ground in the wet thud. Ma'am the sheriff's gruff voice. Stopped the story. Are you over. Apparently my mother looked either sick to her stomach or about to pass out. You're seeing heated that more or less where you're standing. The man was in severe pain. It takes a man who feels he truly has nothing left to live for. Saberi his forces alive like that and wait to kill himself in front of last person. He thought he cared for his twisted as it moves. He left this house to that woman in his will and she's been trying to get rid of it since it's a small town so everyone here new you can imagine they have trouble sometime selling it once. It was finally off the market people round here. Figured it could all be let go and forgotten will thank you officer for your time and for letting me know. Of course we've gotten all the bones off your property so you don't need to think about it anymore. Thank you officer. My mother closed the front door and called my dad into their bedroom when the bedroom door closed. That was my chance to slip away unseen. I'd heard everything. The Sheriff said to say that my mother was living is an understatement. The sellers neglected to disclose the history of the house. Because we were tenants not honors. They had hoped after a year of living in the house. Without knowing the past it wouldn't matter oppressed ear to the arrogant connecting the rooms. My Mom laid into my dad. Not Listening to her. About all the bad feelings we've had over the last so many months exasperated. I could picture my dad. Throwing his hands up in the air by John..
