"You know, and ever since then, that that's caused me to revise my thinking on reincarnation. The idea that you die and you start as a baby, and then live your life again, it goes right into what we were talking about. That may be data, you know, the shit I saw in nitrous 'cause I don't feel dumb that my epiphanies are related to drugs, but not all of them are a lot of them. But this notion of like, oh, is it that we're. Imprinting into the medium of time space? Every thing we do. And that that is a permanent imprint, a frame that upon death can be accessed in the same way we can pull up pictures on our phone or computers and not only access, but experienced. As though, in other words, you could just jump in, you're still going to have your memories. It's going to give you the illusion of having been a kid and got into that frame. But no, you just decided to go back there. Nostalgia, whatever. And yeah, you can jump around freely in space and time. Yeah. Yeah, you can go in and out of time space. But when the problem is, when you go into time space, it's time. So it's going to feel sticky. It's going to feel like you've been here forever because you've dropped back onto the track that Nietzsche's talking about. And I guess one of the qualities of dropping into that frame is that you forget your higher dimensional identity. What happened to the cow with the lantern? Was that goodbye? He writes me letters sometimes. Never saw it again. Never. Never saw it again, but I put it in, we put it in the midnight gospel. Pendleton was such a genius, and he was a drew it for me and then it just ended up as a part of the show. But by the way, I have to admit that is a big fan of yours. I haven't watched them in that gospel, 'cause I've been waiting to do these stupid things, but ever since you talked to maybe two years ago with Joe about it, I've been waiting to watch it with a special person on mushrooms. That's been in my to do. Of course you don't have to be on mushrooms to enjoy it. But for some reason I put it into my head that this is something I want to do with somebody else like experience it and get in the wild. Because visually, I mean, I watched a bunch of just a little bit here and there. But it's just visually such an interesting experience. Thank you. Combined with everything else, obviously the ideas, the voices, and so on. But just visually, it's like, it's like a super psychedelic version of Rick and Morty or something like that. Like farther out while they're out there. So. Yeah, man. That's Pendleton. You know, these people, I was part of that. In the sense that Pendleton gave one of the reasons he's such a genius and great at making stuff is like he's like he really does a good job of just like de hierarchical potential like hierarchies that can appear. You know, someone has to be driving the bus and that was Pendleton, but he lets he's so inclusive.

"They can Pendleton marine base turns 80 years old later this year at a new book is now out about the many thousands of marines who lived in train there The book is entitled heroes live here filled with photos and stories about U.S. Marines The author of the book is Amy Forsyth the veteran and U.S. Marine Corps combat correspondent this week she talked to a.m. 7 60s in coco's Mark Larson Well you know after 9 11 marines from camp Pendleton specifically were called to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan And so the bulk of the troops rotated at any given time at constant rotation from camp Pendleton So the rounding community is rallying around the troops for 20 years study And when I returned to the area now work on camp Pendleton as a federal employee I noticed that all these memorials have been erected And so I thought you know for the gold star families who haven't seen it who don't know And for the marines who were ever stationed there and family members they may not know what memorials have been established in their honor over the 20 years And so I thought let me put all this together and it's really like a love letter to camp Pendleton and the surrounding communities just honoring the service and sacrifice of so many the tens of thousands of marines that have flowed through the base and this region over the past 20 years And when you think about the American military and specifically the Marine Corps and thinking about those deployments since 9 11 I think it's really a good time to have this book out right now Well thank you You know with Memorial Day just around the corner we can take pause and honor those who have served But San Diego is second to none for its patriotism and support of our troops And so we just want everyone to know around the county and in the region and California that can't Pendleton You can be proud of the marines and sailors that serve there And this year marks the 80th anniversary of the base and it's just a great way to learn some history I've got in the first chapter a little bit of California history history of the base and the important role that compounding is played through the years The book is heroes live here You can go to heroes live here dot com Amy Forsyth is the author and inspiring all of this and I think there's going to be a lot of good things that come out of this You mentioned going back to 9 11 and off to Iraq and Afghanistan where I remember initially the casualty counts while they were not as high as a lot of people said oh it's going to be tens of thousands of dead and they think oh that didn't happen But there were a lot of casualties and I would hear those people probably remember you hear those counts The injuries there were deaths It was disproportionate from camp Pendleton Many times It was And in my research I learned that more marines and sailors from camp Pendleton right here in our backyard were killed and injured in Iraq and Afghanistan than any other concentrated base or station in America It's because they can't Pendleton troops the operational forces or geographically aligned to the Pacific and the Middle East And so for that constant rotation at any given time throughout the 20 years there were just a higher number from any other base or station So the community is rallied around those troops and their families and something that we can all be proud of What was the most one of the most difficult things when you think about this Because obviously this can get very emotional You think about what's going on in Ukraine now with all of that just understanding that war on the ground which for years we were told oh it's not going to be like that It's all going to be like high-tech computers and drones and okay to an extent that's part of it But all of a sudden we're back to World War II style So when you think about that in the pure emotional toll how did that hit you sometime Well you know myself I served two tours in Iraq and three tours in Afghanistan and I've deployed all over the world covering military operations and exercises in partnering with militaries and Sri Lanka Poland Palau Malaysia Singapore just all over the world And the one common theme is that if we're proud of our country we want to serve It's a calling for us we will you know we're ready to make that ultimate sacrifice but we train so that we can survive and win And that's what we have to carve out space in our country in places like camp Pendleton for 18 miles of coastline to practice our amphibious assaults and residents in the county might hear the booms and the aircraft flying over That's all good That sound of freedom is really fair The sound of freedom but people may not know well what is the training going on What are the sacrifices that people are being asked to make at any given time So while we may not be at war technically there's always people who are training to fight and win That's Amy Forsyth author of the new book about Kim The Spirit to Soar: Lt Col Barry Bridger's Story of Hope
"A book's been written called the spirit to soar. And it's about the true story of former orphan and POW lieutenant colonel Barry bridger, U.S. Air Force, retired, colonel brazier, I am also a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force as well. Finished it got 20 years and so we'll see if I make it that way. Then you got Jim, Peterson. Jim is with us, and he is on that other blue, a little bit darker below the navy side, which I actually started in. But I spent more of my time with the green guys down at camp Pendleton when I was there as a chaplain, but folks, guys, it's good to have you all with us. This has been an exciting I got to look over the book. And let me just tell you, Jim for riding it, but Barry for sir for you and what you've been through. Thank you both for service and I'm looking forward to some discussion here. So am I let it rip? Here we are too. I love it. Well, let's start off jam almost start off with you on the riding of the book. You ride in the book about why you started it, but you chose it to be a biography, but also a lifeless and explain that a little bit. Well, you know, Malcolm gladwell wrote a book called outliers. And he talks about people who do extraordinary things. So started out, I've observed very known very over 30 years now. And I've observed him in the things that he does, I knew a story, but I didn't know it all that well. And once I learned his story, I told him, one day I met a writer biography in that process. I opened up the discussion of this biography saying that berry's been an inspiration in my life. I've learned so much and so a publicist said, it's a life lesson book. So we put out 17 life lessons that I've learned from Barry's life. And he's had a tremendous impact on my life.

But all of a sudden, both of us were just weren't feeling it and just decided to just be Friends. Not fun with that, actually. That's probably the best way that it can end. Yeah. How did you meet up first and then? Well, when I told this to my mate that Pendleton, it was kind of confusing because we first met on SnapChat. However, he founded my SnapChat named first. He saw one of my videos on social media. Hey, I like your videos weather and yada yada yada. And we had a monthly discussion and it was asking about relationships and was like, you know what? Yeah. We do have a point. You know, let's go with the flow and get the boat moving, you know? And that's how we use our toy con man really after me. Well, actually, yes. Yeah, at first it was quick, but then we actually really took it slow. Well, yeah, me and Jake, you know, a bit bored, surveillance, aren't we? Me new boring. Yeah. You're not going that bad. I.

Get your groceries and get out the door and everything. That's what people have to understand. That veterans deal that kind of stuff every day and so that's why treatment is the best off because i will tell you. The grocery store was one of my. It was a deliberate operation from me to go to the grocery store. Even with my wife and being in therapy and i've been in therapy now going on three years. It's helped me to be able to walk in air. Do some breathing techniques and everything in understand and i would even ask you a question. Then you've been out for a little bit you when you go into a restaurant. Do you make sure you know where the entry in exits are those restaurants. I am not always observing of that. But i'm definitely cognizant of what's going on around me as far as watching the different conversations where like where the crowds like there. It and i didn't even see combat. That component of training is still inside me but this is a normal reaction to the abnormal circumstances. We've ever we either trained for or we've experienced in combat and that's it we have to say that's okay. There's nothing wrong with you if you're in our any restaurant don't get me. You know there are. There are people that come into restaurants and you know shaq place up and stuff but you have a ninety nine point nine percent chance that if you go to restaurant with family it's not gonna be a violent event. It's going to be but still when we go in there. We want to hear that. We're cognizant of the people are sitting around us like my wife and i went to a restaurant yesterday. We had a party of six people win to boot behind us. And i was very cognizant one. Because i couldn't see them but i wanted to hear while they were saying. Did i think these six people were going to you know. Do some kind of terrorist attack mill but through are training experiences. The radar goes up in. We are hyper vigilant. When we come to that kind of stuff you know. And that's okay and that's what people have to learn but in veterans have to learn. That's what going to therapy what. Ptsd is all about. It's normal reactions to the app. Normal shit we've been through or that we've trained for and going to see a therapist is a way of dealing with this kind of stuff and it's okay. That's the message that has to be. I'll give an opposite kind of a story but it's a similar kind of moment so it's up in camp pendleton in infantry training. Descend every marine too. And it's the very first time we are doing a he up. He sees me. I'm down exercise with live ammo. So it's very time like you're moving your firing down range at the same time versus all the safety mechanisms of being stationary with ammo. And i messed it up to the point where like i wasn't paying attention muzzle and i remember getting my ass shoot in that moment and i remember thinking like i haven't even been in marine for a few months now and i already almost killed someone as they said to me that moment of always gonna fuck it up that plague longtime even so i mean there are so many moments where was like kind of fricken marine. Are you going to be if you can't even do this..

Yes they are on the missile ladas louder stuff on that app zero dennison's that's on there also That has been my news. Next up is reading as book club. Which i've been reading an anthony. Oh yawn or volume. Say quick you. how do you feel about sakes. What do you think it's go is that is that is resume and what happens to resume resume so first of all keep us. Keep us of the free but i just wanna hear your thoughts. I wrote notes. Because you know. We've talked about chainsaw before i don't know how many times i have to say it but chainsaw man is all place all right. That's a that's a very high pace manga. Thank you we'll all. That's my smart chainsaw. Man sticking out. But i am volume six and every time i finish man volume always hear you in the back of my mind san just go online to finish do it and i and i think do it. I think i'm gonna do it. I think i'm gonna do it But there's a manga then. I'm currently reading right now. That kinda fucked up my rotation. So and i'll talk about that absolutely i'll talk about what it is and then we'll talk about next week. I'll say what it is and talk about it next week. 'cause i wanna talk about chainsaw man but Yeah i think I think i'm doing. I think i'm gonna do. I think i'm just gonna finish chainsaw man online in jest finish and then just preorder the rest cups. I think I haven't. I haven't checked preorder lately but the chainsaw ma'am preorder is are starting to get like well before in the past They would release like the chainsaw. Ma'am volumes like a week early. But i think due to the popularity that's causing a pushback and the early release. So i think i'm just gonna go on in read it online however i will support and give the pre orders the coins but it's a volume six was a little crazy that's when Volume five is where we meet a character named resume in their volume. Six is where you know you get to know resume a little bit more just a little bit more the bitch psycho but So who isn't a chance on everybody psycho and chainsaw mad so the action. The fighting and action scenes alma volume. Six are like really amazing really liked will drawn like is really been a many. I love chainsaw man. i'm i believe in chainsaw. Mansa premacy An eighty my god. The fight scenes in volume six. I was literally reading of volume six of my work desk. And i was like this like this. Ship was like seoul close to my face. Because i was just like so into it. The action really pulls you in in chapter forty six and forty seven. That's the continuation of the fight between a resume and chainsaw manage. Just the way it's drawn out in you really gotta read it. I don't y'all y'all really have to and chainsaw man because like the visuals the way wage. Drawn-out ish just so good. And it's like the way the fight the fight scenes in a volume six Just like engulf you any. It's really lie. It's like how anime watchers feel when they. I watch a good fight. That translated manga Fuji a- fujimara's really good ads. That's one of boring to this one in a best fighting scenes. I've seen a manga piano. He's directly. He has two or three references directly to blading immoral who summer is like one of his major influences. I think now. Let's get on that. Because i was saying the same thing I realize they're reading volume six. That came from this girl who wasn't supposed to be here but here. I am helping organizations and individuals Raise their game so that they can appear to be doing the work and then they're not and so i feel like it's these every day black women and girls that people just don't recognize have done this loan and the rest of of the women that we are referring to are incredibly important. We want to support them. But you know. I just tell people. Don't don't get messed stop. There's people that came long before because even for me. I stand on the shoulders of giants. And i can assure you that there are some people standing on my shoulders. Some didn't get permission. But i'm allowing it. I understand you know okay. Well let's let some people get by but for the most part just like let's not forget the kelly's of the world right without the voice of kelly without this specific space and then even without the the space that you're creating being here with us Two black women. It's about you know coming together and making sure that we're changing the narrative in a helpful and effective way in making sure that we're listening better to those were serving. I mean i think that's all directly on point we're talking about the condition that lead to the disparate rates and of continuing on this threat. I was wondering if you if you had any thoughts about what communities are doing to stop gun that maybe we don't see in the mainstream media and what it looks like when communities are working every single day to sort of intervene to build up to create peace and how people may not get to see that. Okay kelly. i'm trying to remain shows that known. No me ho well. I'm trying to keep my my thoughts and my mouth in order. So because i respect you too so much. I'm a stay focused. But i really you can be. You can be free with your statements. No i don't want this. I know no not today. But i will say is that you know what people are doing in the community at the ground level. That people don't see every day it's like the most. I think the most painful thing that is series here most recently is that we all know about where orange day and how important that day is right idea pendleton and what that story has done to change gun violence conversations and what we do and how we do things and so you know one thing that i can say for certain. That probably is not public or people didn't really realize that serve. Everybody gets ready for for where orange every single year. It's been changed from where the family has it to a weekend. So that they're more activities can happen and and more awareness. I'm thinking that awareness visibility in education should be what the goal is right however what people do on the ground is is that they still have to live in these conditions and with the consequences of beyond the bullet so here recently Hi d- pendleton family had to go to court For the last thing of the individual that was charged with her death. And i went out to be with family. And to my surprise. I've been working with brady Here for a year and a half specifically With sustain equity group and building out the this relationship that we have that especially with Chris brown has just been phenomenal. And here i show up and the only people that are there is Myself and and and brady and go with go with me where i sat and and so. That was very hard for me to see that. No one has usually taken time to see where. It's hi dee as family. Now are they okay. What are they doing right now..

Where have you know built these friendships and things of that nature and you know and and being friends with these people's kids and going to different cities and having breakfast with a kid who used to be eleven now the twenty five and getting married like it's crazy so so that was the biggest takeaway just being you know just knowing that people are different and you can't just go by what you see and what you've kind of taught in your neighborhood on tv and things like that. So it was a great experience for me in that respect now and what i love about you know hearing your story. I was pleasantly surprised because everyone goes into situations preconceived notions and place. Were you know in the two percent. But you're able to bridge that gap the power of connecting our stories. Absolutely that was rudy. Rush to see photos of rudy and his rodeo buddies..

So my dad being in the military could not stay because they would have killed him and our entire family. In fact, he was prepared to kill himself. He had a gun and ready to commit suicide if he was going to get caught. So my father instructed us to travel to the harbor. Wait for him, and we never met up with him, So we were not together for the entire journey. And did you ever reunite with your dad? Families of Negro Leaguers rejoice in MLB's decision to recognize league
"On wednesday. Mlb announced that it was quote unquote elevating negro leaguers. Two major league status within its official historical record which helps explain why google searches for the name. Josh gibson suddenly started spiking. Baseball says it's figuring out how to include negro leagues statistics into its canon of sacred numbers. And there is no resume quite as legendary or as mythical as that of the late josh gibson. The catcher that satchel page once unambiguously deemed the greatest hitter. Who ever lived. So i called up shawn gibson. Josh's great grandson and the executive director of the josh gibson foundation to understand what mlb's decision to elevate his great grandfather means to him. Well first of all. I don't like the word elevating. I think it should be more of a merger because niggly baseball player or major league players as well. So that's first and foremost this. And i want to bid tuesday night as josh gibson's greg grants and i woke up as josh jacobs. His grandson asher to cerebral calls questions about this happened. Literally when people say happen literally overnight it literally happened overnight and to wake up and see that in lobby made the announcement and josh gibson. Now what we consider not just one greatest league baseball players he. He'll be considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time and so for us in our family. It's a great honor. Ona understand josh. What you heard growing up from family from friends about how your great grandfather considered his own career compared to those who had the opportunity who were afforded that opportunity to play in the majors for jars. You know and the other great negro baseball players you know. They knew they were great players. They didn't even know by to tell him that it was just a decision At that time it was in that era. that kennesaw mountain land is denied the opportunity to play in the majors but did not stop him. They barnstorm against a lot of white baseball players. And you know as well as we know. I know is that a lotta times. They beat the white ball players in. So that's something right there. And so when i totally stories just in our family. There's we call josh gibson big josh. 'cause josh gibson junior of course is the sense that you can't say jockey get confused. I wanted to ask you about one of big joshes more famous nicknames. He was called very famously. The black babe. When you hear that sean about your great grandfather how does that make you feel you know. Let's say this bridge. Stevens bakers great grandson. He's one of my good friends. We go back and forth back and forth on this all the time. I didn't know that okay. Tell me about your relationship with him. And what you guys talk about on this regard. That's great so burn. Stevens is bait roof. Great grandson and so we always talked about. You know josh gibson's compared to my grandfather. And i'm like well that's what you but if you ask me about. Bay roof is a white josh gibson. So we go back and forth. Is we always say our people always say Yankee stadium was called the house. Ruth bill in ice t's brent are okay but who hit the furthest home running stadio i give them on that one. Well i mean. I want to even push that. Story further sean. Because i grew up going yankee stadium. He's the only human being to ever hit a fair ball out of the park out of the house. That babe ruth ledley built. I don't want to rub it in his face to. I don't go that far. I just say the furthest rebel. We all know he headed out. The ballpark. we know is over near babe. Ruth kane close no all seriously. I've heard several stories two different stories. I heard it. It's out of the ballpark. Been a heard from some players that hit like the top tier of moammar. So you wrote a piece of the undefeated in august about your grandfather's name being on the mvp trophy. And that may have been unthinkable at one point but now it does feel like there could be momentum towards that. Why is this important to you and your family. Then the peak kinda fell on our lap on. This happened to read an article about terry pendleton barry. Larkin and mike schmidt. Making a case to remove kennesaw Mountains landers name off the mvp award and it gets to okay. Well here at a names that they're considering replacing the name with in his frank robinson branch rickey and go shoot josh gifts literally again on the phone with my board directors. I said listen. We just found herself in a race. Let's see how we can win it so for us. I'm hoping that the vwa taking consideration of this and really think twice when they make a decision to rename this after josh gibson but this mvp war if this may not. The jaw is just about josh gibson. This will carry on the legacy of all the other great players as well. Who were denied the opportunity. So josh gibson is carrying several thousand players on his shoulders but his vp award the page. Family the buck leonard. Cool up a bail family. Turkey stars fan oscar charleston. Family all great players will all celebrate. It'll be named after josh. But every time i speak about this i'll make sure represent all the family members who were denied the opportunity

Therapy advocate, a waterman, a good friend of Joe and be good friend of mine, because we're all part of the one more way, family, Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the show Rob Garnett Rob. How're you doing? Then fantastic thanks for having me am. Champ and Danny Danny met you before but SHEP. We've talked a couple of times on the phone, so it's cool to be some of the zoom. At least on Zoom. Danny is our producer, and so he's going to be helping out doing the editing and mixing the episode down and things like that Joe is going to be joining the podcast just a minute. He was transitioning from from pork. Chop actually up to his apartment. He's coming back doing some surf therapy sessions. My guess would be out of Pendleton or something like that. As usual on Wednesdays, Joe is on the road living the mission so rob. Before. We get too deep into asking you. Questions I just have to ask when it came time to transition out of your career in the military, did you? When did you know that you wanted to get into surf therapies specifically? And when did you know that like this was going to be a special moment? I. Think when I was so I retired from the navy and two thousand fifteen and so that was kind of win Wave, actually becoming nonprofit, and so I had a couple of buddies Alex and Kyle. We can talk about later. That were trying to get going. They've been doing it kind of. guerrilla-style for before getting official, and so I kind of knew about it before retiring. And then it kind of kicked off. For ME I. I was volunteering here and there with more ways. I had some other gigs so right when I retired I started doing government contracting jobs I did that for a couple years before spending a lot more time volunteering than later coming on. As employees. So, Joe I just ask some general questions. Trying to do is cut those questions and stuff at the back, so feel free to take the lead, and you have the floor sounds it sounds like you talked a bit about something about diving for the navy and then sports. Now we're talking about why I came the navy. Sorry to repeat it, but. I came in hoping to be Navy diver. I've been a commercial diver for about six months in Galveston. Texas after drop Nettie. Collagen thought that'd be a good transition and When I tried to join the navy, they said the Dow closed and that they dove at butts that I should go try that. Sounds like a good idea and so. They had me take a job. That would allow me to go to buds. became a parachute rigger, so I went to school i. By Mos got my. Parachute rigger on. And then off to buds I, not really no one else doing. My parents were hippies so military people. No one wants to be joined. The Navy so really did not get into. So I imagine was a little bit of a surprise to show to buds. Learn what that school was or. Just just the suffer faster not quite ready for nicely. I imagine imagine that's quite interesting. SUFFER FEST! I also can imagine that doing the work that you did. Know you and I kind of a little bit of your background. I've imagine that really helps. Set you up for the mission at one more wave and getting on top of things and getting things moving. You maybe talk a little bit about that. Of maybe some things you learn from the Navy that you apply now at one more. Share just. Learned a lot towards the last couple of years at Miami my time in the service. How can help people in much really from? I've been injured several times while on active duty at spent time at the. At Naiko which I know, you're not talking about for jokes. The National Intrepid Center of Excellence Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic says Maryland runs, and so I started my treatment probably. This is probably two thousand ten zero five years before I retired, and so I have a lot of time to spend time with other folks that had had you know whether it was PGA s or All the kind of things that were happening to people are not super physical, but burying paxil sleep issues, and so I got exposed to lots of different therapies, and I just knew man. This is can't wait to spend more time doing this. And, so I was really excited because I learned all these things in the navy, but how can help other people at learned a lot about the va have across his work for compensation took care people how some days are better than others. Some states are Oracle, and and what? I didn't realize. Your percentage rate affects how you get treated to I was treated well, but I'm on a different ratings on people's. It's tough so I definitely learned a lot, you know. Early on about how to help other people do this and it really as you've seen Joe out. Watch people's faces. When you get to give him some equipment whether it's a board or a boogie board or people that have had nothing. He's got a wet suit like our friends in. Santa Cruz just the amazing transformation that happens. Not only from equipment, but from the community that step we all share the Melcher that we love. Not Picking up cigarette, butts or cleaning off the flight deck, but you know going out von and be talking a little trash, each other encouraging each other and just share. That shared experiences is powerful so. Yeah I definitely can attest that shared experience than to be fair. No ship Naidoo usually pick up cigarette butts, but easily on the beach and they drive us nuts, so that's why. It's quite funny. Were you a surfer before you've got out of the military and got with one more way? Has. Started at middle, school on off and then did it alter the teens long morning. And then took several years off and then kind of into it later on, so yes. We're always at the beaches, kids. We're always bodysurfing. Trying to collect fins like my friend Joe Against.
