What it's like inside a prisoner transport van

"Know, with like two seats on either side. It's like a Greyhound bus. And I mean, instead of a cushy ceased at the Greyhound bus is happy. They had these little part plastic siya and you have to deal with these CEOs and every guy we talked to about this had something to say about how the CEO's act when they're on those transport buses. And you Talk. I'll pull this bus over and kick you. And if you get up without asking to go to the restroom, you will get DP. So what is dp me? Disciplined, physically physically disciplined, And if they do hear some talking, they're going to stop the bus Pull you off the bus. Give you a little bit of what they call it. They used to call it. What was it wrote there? That's what they do. Religiousness, just a gang a threat to us and what's the longest right that you've been on? It was three days going from prison, a prison of prison prison prison collect and everybody that was going to the shu in other places, and we went all the way up north to Crescent City, which is like Eureka. Oh, you're almost in Oregon and I actually went through organ to get to Pelican Bank Indian stopped at one of the prisons and you'll stay there overnight. And sometimes they put you to say you've been a hallway just sitting on a bench all night waiting on them to come get me, But I say it is nice. Uh, I've had some hippie, right? I believe you, but not like Mambo Alley. My name's Elita Bora. I served 12 little over 12 years in the California Department of Corrections been home about four years now. Back and wanted to say was around 2008. I got transfer away from San Quentin because they needed the cells for hire custody, incarcerated people so They shipped me off to California Men's colony. Okay. But the thing that is really difficult for Ali is that he had been taking college classes at San Quentin, right, And they don't have a program like that at CMC. So when he got transferred All of that stopped. And so I Li started doing everything he could to get back to San Quentin. The executive director of college programs like Live Just Hang tight. We're going to try to get you back so you can finish your college degree. I was like, OK, cool. Pretty soon Ali got called to a classifications here, which is an administrative thing you have to do before your transfer. So they called me two classifications like Yeah, she did it. She's get me back to San Quentin. So I go up in the classifications hearing and they're like, Yeah, we'll put you up for transfer and I'm just sitting there. Got my arms folded a little bit, You know, thinking, Yeah, they did this. This is yeah. You go into an out of state facility. Out of state facility. Yeah, they used to do that do that. It was common when the federal courts told California tto Lord overcrowded and as was like you've got to be kidding me. I'm supposed to be going back to San Quit in the classification hearings. They don't even let you talk man. I tried to talk. They just like well about to bring that up with your counselor and went back to the dorm. I was devastated. So Ali, facing another long ride on the great ghouls. This time he's headed out of state and a world away from San Quentin in the college classes, and it's like when you move anywhere. It's like you're starting a new life on ly In this situation. You have no control over it. You have no idea what that life is going to be. You're taking away from everything that's familiar. And your life is totally in somebody else's hands.

One Strange NBA Lottery, and What We Learned and Laughed About

"Let's start with a little draft lottery reacts from your draft, lottery experts no dogs no. Timber Wolves won the number one pick in the twenty twenty NBA draft last night after winning the League's annual draft lottery many entered the night with a fourteen percent chance of moving up to number one the same odds as the warriors and the cavs for best in the League. Best chance at that. So here's the full lottery breakdown for you guys at Number One, the wolves to warriors three Hornets four, bulls trae. Hawk six. Seven Pistons Eight Knicks Hilarious. Nine. Wizards. Ten Sons, Eleven Spurs twelve kings thirteen Pelicans and the fourteenth pick in the lorry goes to the Celtics by way of the Grizzlies. So the big winners yeah. Besides the wolves were those two teams that made significant jumps, you had MJ's Hornets moving up to eighth and trays bowls moving up from the seventh position. All the way up to number four congratulations to you is that a win in your books you'll love to see it. Somehow the Bulls aren't drafting seven I don't even remember what that's like what a summer for the Bulls Boylan, his gone second place in horse and now the fourth. New Orleans Pelicans fire head coach Alvin Gentry

"Announce a firing of head coach Alvin Gentry Saturday. That was gonna happen. Who knew everyone could have seen that coming in five seasons with team. He had a 1 75 into 25 record and only made the playoffs once during that span, and during the bubble, many picked the pelicans to grab that final playoff spot out West. Team underwhelmed significantly and finished with a two and six record with an abundance of young talent. The pelicans job is one that most coaches would love. The snag. Some names being thrown around include Tai lieu. Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson and Lakers assistant former Bucks and that's head coach Jason

Pelicans' Zion Williamson looks every bit the superstar in NBA debut

"The As the NBA Gears Up for the Playoffs Zion Williamson and the PELICANS are preparing to head home. Pelicans were officially eliminated from playoff contention joining the Sacramento Kings also on the blast now. I'm very disappointed in his performance all across the board today, the Athletics Will Hillary joins US to look back on Zion's rollercoaster of rookie season to ask if it's time to adjust our expectations around the NBA's most hyped player in recent memory. That's a big question is just how is he gonNA handle it, and how is he going to respond? Think the great players we've seen in this league when the doubts happened the greats rise, and if he can do that, then we're gonNA, see him being one of the biggest stars in the League and I think one of the biggest stars and Sports.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard lead team to victory over Philadelphia Sixers

"About Damian Lillard? The All Star Guard, had 51 points and seven assists. Help Portland defeat Philly 1 24 to 1 21 Portland's now just 1/2 game back. Of the eighth seed in the Western Conference. And unless if your son's fan of the sons they got a victory today, they're still undefeated inside the bubble or unless if your grizzly span or you still give this the Spurs a puncher's chance. And you have the pelicans and the Kings now eliminated If you just like basketball and let's say you don't have a dog in that fight. You want to see Portland get to the embassy playoffs and meet up with the Lakers in the first round. I could understand why some wanted to seize Einen. But now a Zion and the pelicans are even coming close to get in that 89 playing game. The team that you want to see the team that could be most dangerous are the Portland Trail Blazers.

What are your early impressions of playing in the bubble? I was like, man, I don't know how it is. Don't work. Anthony Davis Has Room to Grow

"GonNa Focus on the Lakers, which as an editor is near and dear to my heart because sharks picked the biggest red meat team on on on the table here. But they've been really impressive with us are there to one and Anthony Davis looks like probably the best player in the bubble thus far chunks. Why don't you leaders us through some of the things that have been happening with Lakers why think for the record this is called the impossibly good-looking persons corner just clarify. For. Their how dare sir? Okay so we're looking at the Lakers thing to me that's jumped out in the first three games is how they're playing when Anthony Davis playing without Lebron on. So that was been their biggest problem. All season is those non Lebron ad minutes because he idea was. Okay. If you have a D- then Lebron can rest he can get. His breaking it as time off, and they'll still be fine. But before the restart when eighty was out of the Ron, he was minus three and five, hundred, six, hundred minutes as those are important minutes Lakers have to win in the restart I mean obviously is a very small sample size but who cares where we're doing podcasts in the restart their plus night. Eighties playing without Lebron. That's just a massive flip on their whole situation and to me watching those minutes was set out to me I think number one. Not Having region Rondo. I think that really kind of low key killed their team because when rondos playing he has to have the ball right like Rondo can't play off the ball Swiss hole in the ball he's not really a threat to score someone's really guarding him and then on defense that giving you much either so like Alex the numbers when ad and Rondo without Lebron it was minus five and without Rondo they're playing Caruso and waiters with a d the floor is spread and the thing. Anthony. Davis. You don't need a traditional point guard Anthony, Davis give eighty the ball in the mid postals kill people right? He gets the ball then it kicks shooter instead of the Rondo. So it's like ADP without Rondo back great and the other thing too is eighty at the five. So they're going eighty Kuzma than like Greener Casey Caruso waiters whatever. Eighty s numbers at the five the year are insane. They're absolutely ridiculous. So cab. Looking at that with no Devellano Dwight Eighty has a usage of twenty eight shooting of Sixty six point six. Now base that means in English as eighties in the ball, like he's hardener Jaanus and he's been the most efficient player in the league. So if looking at those two numbers, there's only been one player in NBA history that had to be that efficient at that. High usage not staff like five years ago. So basically, when eighties at the five, he does a established about shooting threes he's basically scoring at will every single time I think long story short eighty more room to grow I. Think we're seeing that right now like leading a d. plan space given him the ball he's got levels still the go to get into them right now. Yeah I. So the biggest thing off of that, which was great I just wonder if their margin for error is too thin right now obviously the Lakers have been incredible. So let's get that caveat out of the way I think probably favorite if not among the favorites for the title. People like to remind us on the group Chat specifically Chris Because I don't think sharks was. One I remember that yeah. Where we pretty much we troll the Lakers after their first loss of the season and. Venture like the succeed but clearly, they've they've far exceeded those expectations. Great. Please don't ask me. But I do wonder as bad as Rondo has been at times. As much as Bradley is the fifth most important guy on that starting lineup at times I do wonder if the margin for error is a little bit more thin and you are relying on the cruise of the world on the Casey Visa, the world more than you would like to my wrong rob now I mean I'm I'm pretty compelled by this whole situation that sharks laid out like the idea of shifting some of those pieces around and unlocking ad in a different way like makes logical sense to me given his skill set this is. The Guy, who can you know Kevin O'Connor talked in in the restart this week about how? Bam. Out of Bio Converts Defenses Ad in the mid post has a similar effect where if you clear out, you give him space and a straight line drive past almost any big in the league like that's such a powerful thing that there should be a way to orient pieces around that. Make Sense I. Think I get skeptical is in that margin for error and it's in, you know if you look at kind of the core of these lineups. AD and CAL Kuzma, and Alice Caruso or kind of the three man anchor of it and in around that, there's a revolving door of guards. You got some Danny Green minutes you get some dion waiters minutes he gets JR Smith gets in Casey ep you got whoever they cobbled together in that minute in the rotation at those guys scare the hell out of me a little bit and I think you know when you flashback to eighty as a Pelican and where he was some of where they fell apart without drew. Holiday on the floor without kind of more traditional point guards on the floor which just not having competent entry passers not having guys who could get a d. the ball in positions to score, which is it seems like such an easy thing. But the thing I don't trust dion waiters to do but it is a thing. Maybe I do trust Danny Green to do it. You know like some of these more professional veteran level guys like that distinction I think is an important one and probably the difference between bubble seating. Games bubble playoff games, right where you're getting Jr's and the demons at least lower in the pecking order if not out of the rotation on a regular basis entirely, and then you're looking at these minutes where it's you know, Danny Green Casey P. and those guys and cannot work I. Think I. Think there's a chance that it does but I do get a little bit suspect just in the sense that once playoff defenses are really keying in on what this lineup look like and how it works what does that? Mean deep because you know Jaanus has had that scrutiny in terms of a big who handles the ball who's creating for space lineups like we know what that looks like in defense is know what that looks like defensive kind of just been dealing with these Lakers lineups without Lebron floor all year haven't had a lot of trouble with them, but they haven't hammered them either in terms of the the mechanics of how they work. If this starts working, then you invite that level of

Orlando Magic's Jonathan Isaac explains why he didn't take knee or wear Black Lives Matter shirt Friday

"We had an incredible opening weekend of games name a star level player that player delivered at least once if not twice over the first three or four nights of the NBA's restart here in Orlando, we had crazy comeback wins. By the Houston Rockets, we had a dominant performance by. Jaanus over some little pesky pip squeak team from New England I forget who they might be. We got Marcus smart got fined for trying to work the officials. We've got storylines upon story lines. The clippers bounce back from their loss to the Lakers. Looking excellent and just throttling the New Orleans Pelicans. There's so many different directions that we can go Michael that I decided. Here's what we're GONNA do opening weekend heaters we're GONNA have just open ended questions are we're going to ping pong back and forth you give me your answers I'm going to give you my answers to these questions and try to cover as much ground as possible before we get there though I do want to double back quickly on the national anthem demonstrations that we touched on last episode, we got so many thoughtful emails from various members of the open floor globe on this subject, but I think there was a major development after we spoke on Friday. and. That involve Jonathan Isaac Meyers. Leonard Gregg Popovich Becky Hammon and one of the NBA referees all deciding to not kneel to not really participate in what had been in unified demonstration on Thursday. All of those people who chose to stand were obviously doing it on principle and they were doing it knowing there was going to be a lot of attention their direction. Now, if you look at Popovich amend the referee essentially, they were trying to just say, Hey, I support the the Social Justice Movement it's it's a private or personal decision for the referee said look I it's important to me to stand Meyers Leonard made a similar comment. Essentially. Saying that his brothers military service in the in the military service of close people in his life led him to WanNa stand to salute the flag. But within Isaac was a slightly different case and he actually used this entire demonstration opportunity to almost have a one man demonstration of his own. In his belief, the idea of the black lives matters movement quote unquote doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. He also said that you know we shouldn't be necessarily judging things solely based on skin color that we should be trying to live a life basically you know in God's mold and try to live up to his standard, and that Jesus Christ was his personal savior and and that he wanted everyone to focus on that. Aspect of of living rather than the particular issue that was being brought forward with the black lives matter movement by the players he didn't really get any major pushback. Within the NBA Community people respected his right to make a stand. He actually not only did he stand during the national anthem? He didn't wear a black lives matter t shirt which many people notice because he was essentially the only player not to do that his whole personal story Michael took a crazy twist over the weekend and sad twist when he wound up tearing his ACL injury that's going to end his time here in Orlando obviously but also could cost him all of next season. So now talk about a whirlwind seventy, two hours for player who generated millions of us with his comments about the protests. I'm curious. Let's start with Jonathan Isaac. What did you make of his decision? After we've seen things settle in the last couple of days You know maybe it doesn't seem quite as Eye Opening as it did at that moment, but I'll admit I was I was surprised to see given the buy in from everybody on opening night. Right, I mean I just WanNa Start and say that it it really really is a bummer to see anyone get injured but particularly is ICK who was already on restriction he was already playing with a humongous brace on his leg from a previous injury that cost him a majority of this regular season before it was suspended. So I just I feel for him greatly. I I think generally speaking. The coverage of who stands in who sits I mean we talked about this heading in anticipated it I. Think I think the coverage is generally besides the point and it doesn't really get the point I feel like people are using. This as an opportunity to shame those who are standing in a little bit I mean Meyers Leonard. said, he couldn't sleep before he made the decision to stand and that's just like not. The whole focus or the point here right like. You can obviously Support Black lives and also stand for the national anthem. It is a symbolic gesture that is what it is in the case of Isaac. I really had a difficult time understanding even what his message was until you interpreted it the way that you did I mean I watched the clip of Him Multiple Times survey there I'm GonNa just GonNa read what he said I and then we can use that as a jumping off point because I don't WanNa torture what he said earlier and I might have done that. So sorry for that. He says quote absolutely I believe that black lives matter kneeling while wearing a black lives matter t shirt doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. I. Don't think kneeling or putting on a T. shirt for me personally is the answer i. Feel like for me, black lives are supported through the Gospel. All lives are supported through the Gospel. We all have things that we do wrong. Sometimes, it gets into a place of pointing fingers. We all fall short of God's glory whoever will humble themselves and seek God and repent of their sins. We can see our mistakes and people's mistakes and evil in a different light. Racism isn't the only thing that flags our society, our nation and our world, and he basically said he wanted this conversation to get out of the realm of skin color because the answer to all of our problems in everything that goes on in our world is Jesus. So. when I watched the clip. I'll I'll be honest. I was a little confused where he was going to after typing it all out trying to marinate on what he was saying I think he essentially wanted to have a demonstration on behalf of his religious beliefs and that this was an opportunity for him to say look you know focusing only on one particular group I. Guess in his view, the black lives matter group and you know everybody wearing a t-shirt doesn't necessarily achieve the wider goal which would be presumably healthy living. You know honest living you know Living which to him as a higher priority I think that's where he was going with his statements.

Some NBA players sit out the season

"Okay, Let's talk about the MBA there beginning this week in Orlando in Florida, which is a co vivid nightmare at this point. Some players air sitting it out, or they just saying I'm not going to play because I'm afraid of getting covered. Yes, Some players were sitting out because of family members that are at risk. Some players were just sitting out because they're not going to do it. You got key members of Seems like the Clippers, you know mantra. Is Harold sitting out Patrick Beverley sitting it out. You know, these are key elements of members of a lot of teams are saying, Hey, I need to Protect my family and protect myself and that's responsible. But then you've got other members of the Clippers like Lou Williams, who actually went back to Atlanta for a funeral. And then was photographed at a strip club with a rapper. He posed the rap, proposed it to his instagram, and then he quickly deleted it. And then he came out and said, Hey, that was an old picture of me and Lou Williams. I love him so much. I want to do it. But in the picture Lou Williams was wearing an N B a sanctioned mask. You know the way people were Matt five years ago that the MBA sanctioned know that he got busted in this thing. So now the Williamses basically quarantined for 10 days. He can't play in the first couple of games back. He just can't play in the 1st 2 games, one of them against the Lakers. So it affects the team and what the N B A is saying, you know, they had a squeaky clean record. They just recently tested everyone and had zero positive tests inside the bubble, But some players have to leave the bubble stars Ion Williamson, who's the big stars Big rookie star from the New Orleans Pelicans. He had to leave for a family emergency. "I think because the players have a heightened confidence that they are a legitimate playoff team with Zion Williamson I think that their sense of urgency on the defensive end change I don't think it was I on defense that helped them I think Zion's offense and the confidence. It came with them. Help them defensively now by the numbers. Only two things really changed I thought were significant. They didn't send teams. That free throw line is much and I know for fact. That's something that says. Delic their assistant coach. Who does their defense had been pushing all year? Quick Fouling people and I. Don't this I couldn't figure out when I watched film on the court, but three point defense got a lot better. They didn't give up as many threes. Teams shot at poorly. That may be luck of the draw as much as anything. They still don't get back even with. They didn't get back over any stretch of the season they gave up transition points. Give up a ton of points in the paint They don't particularly force a lot of turnovers. But they did do a very good job of limiting the three and they quit Fowley, but we're. They really changed. Ziona was on the offensive end of the floor, so they always played at a fast pace. They were among the leaders top four team in. I think it fast. Break points all year long they shoot a lot of threes and make a lot of threes at didn't change pretty much the entire year, but they had no interior presence they were. You know well into the bottom half of the league points in the paint well into the bottom half of the League and get into the free. Throw Line now Zion comes and. And for the stretch they have him all of a sudden. They're third in the League points in the pain and seventh in the League and free throw attempts, and they're still shooting a lot of threes, making them, and so everything with them change because of that, and here's the other stretch, and you know the Zach from history when you're getting to the free, throw line more. And you're attacking the paint more you know which means you're shooting percentage. Go Up, just regular shooting percentage that means your defense can get set particularly going to the free throw line, and that helps your defense because you're not in transition as much where we know they're terrible. So coach I'm used to being the one on my podcast, like makes the big statistical reveal and like his done all the research like no, here's the actual thing that's happening and bring you on Eddie Lord. I don't have anything left to say. Let me say this a you just hit it. I think Zion's biggest contribution to their defense has been his offense and I think it's not just. When you score more when you get to ally more new score more, you get to set your defense and they're doing both of those things. Much more was I- on on the floor. They're also of rebounding at an absolutely colossal rate. Because I'll williamson apparently can jump four times in the span that takes normal basketball players to jump once, and is like some cross between Moses Malone and like Dominique, Wilkins or something on the offensive glass. In terms of why they're defense, I think that's actually the biggest reason. Why defended the two biggest reasons? Our defenses better to me with him on the floor is number one. Their offense number two luck because if you look at their shots. Their second to worst next to worst in opponent shots at the basket like you try to prevent opponents from shooting at the basket. The PELICANS do not do that and they do not do that any better or worse. Zion on the floor. They're still terrible at it. They're shot. Distribution allowed is the same the biggest differences teams are shooting thirty one percent from three woods I on the floor I find that I find it preposterous that he has anything to do with that other than. What I said about their offense I think so I think they're getting lucky. The free throw thing is very interesting to me because I don't know what's going on there. Their free throw rate doesn't just drop with him on the floor. It drops by like a Gargantuan. They become the bucks. Basically they become the best non fouling team, the entire NBA I don't know why that is I'd have to look at it a little bit more, but I think his offense is helping their defense more than anything else that he's doing in his offenses like I mean obviously spectacular. You can do anything you want with the guy. I, just think. You. Know I spent a lot of the early season. Some of the early season I a podcast watching Lonzo ball wondering. What exactly is Lonzo? Ball begin in the NBA like it's just like, is he? Is he like he's still not shooting at very well? He's not a traditional half court point guard by any means like. Is he just going to become like a flick is six man like what what is he going to be? And then enter Zaylon, and he has this immediate. Beautiful Chemistry was resigned. They play off of each other. They both want to run. I mean all Lonzo wants to do is throw seventy foot passes, and now he has a target to do it. they have a beautiful chemistry in the half court and more than that. Zion is. A playmaker full stop in the half court in the open court. He's another playmaker in so Lonzo's lift as a playmaker particularly in the half court shrinks, and if he's really a thirty percent, three point shooter, which that's what he's shooting from three this season. If that's real in a lot of that can be on catching shoots from somebody else then you have. Lonzo as like this, he's not really a traditional point guard anymore at all in the half court. He's sort of like a full court player who does a little bit of everything in the Half Court rebounds the hell out of it defends the hell out of it. You Have Ingram who I think a future primary playmaker. He's a little over taxed, but in a role where he's maybe your third playmaker, he he's perfect and has a really nice pick and roll chemistry already with Zion. And also likes to push the pace and everything sort of made sense and Zaylon. Alonzo as a basketball player just makes more sense with Zion and it just like he went from a guy that boy i. wonder what Pelicans are going to do with him and extension toxic. What does his future in the League to like? This is really interesting now and it just the combination of talent, I just clicked in a way that I'm not sure the Pelicans even expected to. Your look I mean everything you say about about. All those guys is right. To Me Lonzo Ball on when you're looking at his positive size. SMART. I. Think the guys very very smart player. And he's extremely unselfish. I, mean, he would much rather pass the ball. Than do anything else on the court, so you've got the start toward being a very effective. Basketball player as you mentioned shooting thirty percent from three and making two and a half threes game. He was watching like Oh. Yeah Jay. Twelve shots and the thing I will say is one of the things that I. Thought was a good step forward. For Lonzo Ball this year, is he had some games where he was like one for ten one for eleven from three and I saw that as a real positive. Because you know in the past what I've seen from him if he shoot those first three and they didn't go in, he was passing shots now I think Alvin Gentry ed convinced him like No. No, no, you're going to keep shooting the ball and if you're open, you shoot it. So, I think that they've got a good thing. In Lonzo Ball obviously is only twenty two where his development has gotta calm is. Shots off the dribble both APP the Rim Kenny find a way to finish. He hasn't really figured that out and. Can't shoot the jump shot or flow. It doesn't have any of that off the dribble right now, so if yes, to put the ball on the floor to the basket. He simply looking to pass the ball. You can see it with defensive teams. They really don't commit to him because he doesn't have great explosion going to the basket anyway, and he doesn't WanNa. Really shoot the ball in those situations that would be his place that developed, but man at six six with his ability to defend the passes the ball. He's making the three. You know I think sometimes we can get too focused on what guys can't do He's got a nice package. Package of skills, and as you mention, that got other ball handling parts pieces. He doesn't need to facilitate everything in the half court and I. Almost think what if everything goes right and you can run your half court offense through Zion Williamson Brandon Ingram, jrue holiday with some catching suit and movement for JJ rhetoric in the half court. What's the problem if Lonzo ball becomes mainly just a standstill shooter? You don't have. Decreased you'RE GONNA play. You'RE GONNA play twenty five possessions a game in transition anyway, which is where his bread and butter is yeah and again. I think that's what you do as a coach as you look to people's strengths, and you put it together like..

"On paper as upsets I think we're GONNA have a bunch of those early on. Because like I've got the new. New Orleans Utah game the very first game back. Like if Zaire back especially I'm taking New Orleans in that because that's a game, they need to win. Quin Snyder doesn't need to win that game like let's let's ease into this whole thing and I think what the contenders will do Zach as they get closer to that first round of the playoffs. That's when they're going to start amping up the minutes in getting people ready so I think those first few games are going to be absolutely crucial for Memphis and I think their schedules actually tough. Right there like if I were them, I'd WanNa be playing the clippers, the Lakers and dinner. Early, on because I think you're gonNA, see their main guys. Twenty four minutes something like that as as into it I would guess that they're faking it a little slower in practices and stuff right now. I don't know that for sure. That's just my guess. Well I. Don't I don't know how I feel about you coming on this podcast and using your coaching expertise in Acumen to undermined my point coach. You know it's it's not very now. It's very, it's I. You're probably right, and my point was probably stupid. In that case, watch out for the PELICANS because their first three Games are Utah Clippers and then the rest of their schedules teams that are under five hundred so they if if if his ion returns in time. By that logic which I actually kind of agree with now that you've said it. They have a real chance to go like seven, one six and two if they can pick up where they left off. Yeah, and I think here's the point, is that? I I think the bigger problem if I'M A MEMPHIS FAN. And I'm thinking that Memphis is being treated unfairly in this whole thing to me wouldn't be the schedule or anything else because you only got to play eight games, you're up three and a half games. You had a tough schedule coming up. Had you resume? I would feel good about that. The part that I wouldn't like if I were Memphis. Fan Is that we're probably going to have to play and play in probably not gonNA be able to finish up more than four games, and now that's. All I'm going to have to go out and win another game. I could be done two games into the the playoffs. You know not make it into the finally. That's where I feel a little bit. Did a guest and I'm not against what the NBA is doing in this because I think. Both economically and for the encore products. They needed these eight games leading in, and it wouldn't have been worth doing. If all you brought the sixteen playoff teams, it would have been a bunch of. That meant nothing. So I thought they made the best decision they could here. But if I were Memphis fan I'd probably be railing about it, yeah. That the time for self interest. I, just I I kind of lost it a couple of months ago, talking to I'd like. The NBA got a lot of credit for everyone came together and have the collective spirit in mind like actually think that there was a little more pernicious sort of self interest behind the scenes like I was talking to a lottery team that I won't name who was like well. You know I. Mean it kind of sucks for us because you know. We were set up to like one in fifteen in our last. Whatever games really move up the lottery odds? Our frozen, but if we have to come back and play, we might win together. They Stop Stop. Pandemic just make the best of it. Put All. Your stuff decided to make the best of the other team. We should mention here as Boston. which gets the grizzlies pick with top six protection, so if the grizzlies make the playoffs, Boston will get the seventeenth whatever it is if they missed the playoffs. And jump up in the lottery. Then the pick rose over and becomes unprotected. Next season. I would guess that Boston is rooting for that scenario because an unprotected grizzlies pick next season, even if they draft another good player in the Western. Conference your then you then give yourself to be like an injury to a grisly away from being in pole positions, and that's the other thing. Let's talk about. The New Orleans Pelicans, the other team at the edge of this discussion team that has been chasing Memphis since the return of Williamson and really you know they're twenty, eight and thirty six their tenth minus point eight points per game, whatever fifteenth and offense, which surprised me I thought they were better than that and certainly with a certain. Like Flying Boulder of a human being, they have been better than that twentieth and defense. That did not surprise me. They were a train wreck on defense. For most the season with Zion they are ten and nine, and with Zion on the court they are plus nine point five per one hundred possessions, so you really talking about two teams the Pelicans Without Zion and the Pelicans with Zion. The pelicans woods I on despite the fact that he was not in good shape and struggle horribly on defense looked very much like a playoff team and frankly. One of the most fun teams to watch the entire league, if not the single most fun team to watch. There are a lot of ways to tackle this, but the first is like. We need to know I on his coming back. We don't quite know that yet, but. Boy. This team is really really interesting and. His presence changed them in obvious ways right like he's a star. He's already a star. He walks in as star. You can give him the ball pretty much anywhere on the floor and let him go one on one. You can use them in lots of different ways on offense. You can post them. You can even run a little pick and roll with him. which is something we didn't see? You can. He can take it coast to coast and just run people over and tear the backboard down. But more than that. I just felt like something. More ephemeral something more intangible clicked into place for them. Just it just seemed like everybody was now in the appropriate spot in the hierarchy, there was all of a sudden, a little bit more playmaking on the floor, so that all the playmaking making responsibilities were more well distributed. offensively. They had a look of a team that was a having a lot of fun and be. was starting to settle into a groove in terms of like. We know how we want to play. We know what our strengths are defensively. They had a ways to go coach. What strikes you about design on version of the PELICANS? Well Zion, in particular I, mean you? You hit on all the things that you can do with him and I think you hit on the intangible part of it, I. Think just you know like we talk with John Moran. Zion there, there's a different level of confidence with the PELICANS team. I mean I think they're players believe. That, there are a playoff team, and even that they can make some noise in the play offs when they have him in all of their dies but I think what people missed. With the PELICANS is how rapidly this team was improving. Even before he came back, so they got off to the six and twenty two start where they were nineteenth in the League often simply and twenty eighth defensively I mean they were. Not even really competitive. Okay, I mean the transition defense was. Still is unbelievably bad. Yeah, terrible and give up a lot of points in the pain, and they turn the ball over, and this not much good to watch, then after that six and twenty to start 'em before Zion came back, they had a stretch for a month middle of December. Two Middle January. They go eleven and five before he comes back. And they were ninth offensively and twelve defensively, and then Zaylon comes back, and they actually were eleven offensively in those twenty games. I know he missed one of an eight defensively with Zion and so. This team continued to get better now. What Zion bring to them, okay. How did they get better defensively that one has? Stuck with me because US Cohen's not very good defend. I'm so happy. You brought this up because again. If you look at their numbers with Zion on the floor, they're giving up one hundred and three point five hundred possessions, which is like number, two in the League would be number two in the league among teams with him off the floor. They're giving up like dude. Just letting people score basically. And so I I did some research into this. I want to hear your answer to the question. Do you believe that he's? What is happening in? Do you believe it has anything actually to do as I Williamson I? Do think it has a little bit to do as I on Williamson. Williamson's I. Go back to the point I may..

Zion leaves NBA bubble for 'urgent' family matter

"All right one to turn to this story from inside the bubble, and it's a big one the Pelicans announcing yesterday the Williamson left the NBA bubble yesterday morning. Because of under undisclosed urgent family medical matter now Williamson intends to return at some point here's this coach Alvin Gentry. Don't know anything right now from the standpoint of. Coming back and you know obviously us. We've discussed supportive. Amina's family and their privacy doing this time right now, you know. We played forty four games without him and. You know we have top stretching, and we also had a stretch for. We won twelve out of sixteen. Without Him, so obviously, he's a great player that we'll miss, but the one thing that we've always talked about even when we went through times is that. Next Man. Marc Spears joins US live from inside the bubble at Disneyworld mark. Seems a little unclear as to why he left. What are you hearing about that about why he left at this point? Look the PELICANS are keeping it really really close to the vest, and they've been like that all all season. Way Him, you know this is still a teenager very very protective of their future star, and it's a family matter so I certainly understand that, but when it comes to him coming back, Ryan is really complicated. Absence of seven days or less, he s a quarantine. Four days upon return to the bubble with negative tests needed each day. Longer than a week. He has quarantine for four days. If he has a negative test the final day seven days he has gone. Without a required COA testing he will quarantine for ten days, so the Pelicans will debut. On July thirtieth they're one of four teams that play in the first day to resumption. It's not a lot of time between now, and then they have their first criminals, and just a few days, so yeah. The PELICANS certainly have a lot to worry about in their hopes of trying to get back to the playoffs, Yeah and we certainly wish Zion Williamson, and is it well with this family matter I mean that's first and foremost here hoping they're okay, but I look at this as well and I say without him. What are their chances of moving far into the playoffs structure? Like Alvin said you know. They played forty four games without him. Brandon Ingram the all star. He played most of those games at power forward. Without Zion, but once I came back. He only missed one game, and they have a stretch for by the name of Niccolo Meli. Not Not too hot says Zion has not the game design has I think the average is like seven games seven points a game. He would likely replace Zayn at power forward with Ingram staying in the small force spot, and I. Think drew holiday, said it best. He said you know. As much as it hurts to say, we've done it before in terms of playing without Zayn.

It's just such an important conversation to have I love what you're doing and I love how much educating people not only about your science, but also just about. Yeah, we are really hoping that this event will encourage discussion and dialogue that different cultures and races can really work together that we can understand each other's viewpoints, and even though we are underrepresented in the outdoors were still here. "Well we over obsessive everything. Lebron says also right so then you gotta look at the fact that Lebron's out here praising John Moran but didn't praise Diane so at some point is Lebron sort of fueling this and the way he's handling it he said a lot of Great Things About Zion. They were she's enough. They were putting off a clearly because he had like two quotes at shoot around that morning. Four quotes in the game that we're going back to the LAKER game in La. The video of him kind of thing. I don't know him never met him. Never met him before. Never had a conversation never met him before and it was the last question of like a six minute interview where he said he's going to be a great player is number special. We've all known that Super Explosive Super Intelligence on floor everyone kind of like recognizes his his Lebron abode as far as his dunst books all the compliments of Zion. You would expect somebody to do but because he said he never met him everybody was what does he have? Zayante fans and for everyone. That's the non look forward to seeing You know him at this level tree support in exile. I don't know man we just haven't crossed pass yet. It's okay it's okay that a nineteen year old a thirty five year old. Don't hang out together. Once the energy like in New Orleans right now resigned. Been as big as he isn't as great as he is and having this sort of success so early. It's unlike anything I saw when Anthony Davis was here full disclosure. I'm I was born in New Orleans. Got My start writing at times. Picayune in New Orleans covered. Lsu'S I've been down there pretty much my whole life and I remember when Anthony Davis when the PELICANS well. The Hornets won that lottery to get Davis. The excitement level for Zaylon was way beyond anything that ad brought and that's not a knock on a d. That's how fans have responded to John during the summer. When it's full New Orleans Saints Training Camp Time. You know. You're going to the store and you're seeing people in Pelicans gear in Pelican Tent in Zion shirts. And you'll go. Oh that's new. We didn't see that before so. There is a very high level of excitement around on this team right now in the city. He seemed to Duke to be sort of oblivious to whatever that extra pressure was or whatever that extra attention was how is he handling it New Orleans. It's kind of funny because I think he realizes where he is who he is at the same time when he doesn't remember him telling the story about how he met. President Obama at the All Star game in Chicago and he was floored that Obama knew his college stats and knew all these things about him. And he's like man he's like I. I expect this from like you know for like him. The notice about like superstars but like not like being trae. And it's like you and trey or superstars dude like you're you're getting there. You are a big thing so some of that you know. Being being nineteen year old kid has kind of playing into it. A little bit but He's figuring out what he means that the city I think at the same time you've given us the blueprint on how to Defense Ions specifically. That's work so far this This year yes I will take full credit for the blueprint. I will not say it was. Nba Coaches all me. You've all lanes of the blueprints for everybody and insignificant because tonight the Pelicans host the heat. They're trying to snap a three game losing streak but the heat have some of those things that you've mentioned so as you look forward to that matchup tonight. What do you expect? It's going to be fun because I mean you. You look at what he did to Jaanus the other night when they held him to thirteen point there the right type of team to be physical with him. They're the right type of team that's going to kind of knock him down. Push him around a little bit and try to get him off his game. One of two things are going to happen either. Any kind of depends on the refs and a game. You can be physical with him. And sometimes he won't get the call you can be physical with him and sometimes he will get it. There's been games where he shot. Nineteen free throws thirteen free throws fourteen free throws and then there's the game against Dallas on Wednesday where he shot five even though he was on the floor six times. So we'll see if it if it continues to work when they take on the heat tonight. I'M GONNA ask you to change my mind on something here because I have been everywhere that I've been at. Espn for the last. Several weeks. Championing John Moran is rookie of the year because the expectations were so low for the grizzlies. Coming in. And you're talking about ready. I I'll hit you with. This is my fun fact. I always go to according to Caesar sportsbook coming into the season. The over under win total from Memphis was twenty seven and a half so we'll call it twenty eight. They hit that number by the All star break because John Mirant so he has this huge body of work. Can't change my mind. Convince ME THE ZION. Williamson is actually going to be the rookie of the year. Because of the Games missed the only way I think you can give a design on is if he gets the Pelicans into the playoffs and they were you know what five games back or so which when he games to play. So THAT'S A. That's a tall task if he can get by that. Which would include two games against John Mirant left? If they can get by that then I would I lean towards I am but the only way I think he can get. It is of the Pelican. Make the Playoffs Zion. Doing what he's doing is is is insane and I think because of the the level that he is playing at when he's putting his name next to first rookie to do this since shack first rookie to do this. Tim Duncan I think it just carries a little bit more weight. He's going to continue to add south the his game. This is phase one. I'LL GO TO MARVEL TERMS SINCE ZION loves Thanos. He thinks then as did no wrong. He thinks Santos was the good guy in the in the avengers. So this is phase one of Zion. And he's just beginning and he's doing what he's doing right now he's GonNa learn other things to get him going his basketball. Iq Is so high a work on his handles his work on his shot once he starts to put everything together. He's GonNa be a a real force not that he isn't right now but he's just so strong let's quote Thanos Zion Inevitable yes. Zion is inevitable. And it's just if it's GonNa Happen Guys Andrew. We appreciate your time. Enjoy the process but most importantly we appreciate you giving us the online. No problem I'm going to enjoy this Great southern whether we have we are so not. "The bronze started all of this out. Go to like a wrestling analogy right. Like he was faced in the beginning it was a good guy and then he goes to Miami and he becomes a he'll Zion comes into the league and he's been so covered by so many people that there seems to be this level of animosity towards the coverage that makes it feel like he's starting out as a bad guy in some ways to the general public so when the General Public View Zion. Eventually does he being one of the beloved good guys in the NBA or the easy to root against villains of the NBA? He's definitely going to be a good guy he's a face he's built as a face he's pushed as a face but there's a certain section of Fan we're not gonNA take what's been you know being shoved down our throat and they they wanna hate him because of how popular he is when we go to road arenas when Zion comes out the tunnel. There's a hundred fans around there ninety minutes before the game when he comes out cheering for. There's a Duke Jerseys in every arena. We go to now. There's Pelicans gear in every arena. We go to now. I think he's got this kind of childlike lovable personality. That he's always got a smile on his face. I see him being the well like guy throughout his career. So what part of that love for Zion and coverage of Zion? Our obsession with his eye on plays into what is at least being perceived now as a budding rivalry of some sort between Lebron and Zion. I think we're always looking for like who to put. Lebron against but Lebron has been so dominant for so long that his contemporaries kind of they they fall off. So we're looking for are now. Who's the next Lebron? Now and I think Lebron real losses that because everytime he plays against some of these young dudes everything plays against Luca or trey or Zion or jaw. He just wants to remind everybody. Hey guys I'm still the Bron. I think he likes that challenge.

"WHO's the biggest threat to the Lakers? Winning it all Sammy in Missouri. Thanks for calling the show semi. What's your take? Here's the biggest threat to the Lakers. MARACAS is the biggest threat to the Lakers. Like come on man like James Harden the rockets have been so close to get into the NBA finals the last couple of years. I don't think you can count amount. They got Russell Westbrook Chris Paul Withhold. I mean he's a good player but Russ he's is GonNa Bring the energy that they need. I mean Lebron James. He's tired himself out. I mean what else can I say about it man. It's so just click appellate being gone help or hurt your cause for the rockets doc is being the one that can stop him. Yes Click Capello. Leaving is a good thing Mike. He's great during the regular season. I think two years ago he led the NBA field goal percentage but in the playoffs. They take them out the lineup and they put him on the bench like the whole game. Well it wasn't that you're right two years ago. Capello Pella was lights out. Two years ago we were saying Capello was the third piece of a dominant trio that the rockets could build on and contend for championships for years. I mean come on we were. We're you're giving Capella a Lotta love. I don't know that I feel like that's addition by subtraction. Getting rid of obviously. They're doing it because they're gonNA make other moves. Let's see what those other moves are but it's GonNa take a lot my mind for the rockets rockets to leapfrog the rest of the West as the team that can suddenly take down the Lakers. I want your thoughts triple eight say. ESPN eight seven to nine. Three seven seven six. WHO's the biggest threat to the Lakers? Winning all you can also tweet me at Jason Fitz just says the rest of the League. I think the line is fifteen percent chance of winning it all. Well just that's a very specific. The answer to a very general question I I realized the rest of the League would be the biggest threat to the Lakers. I think we're looking for more specificity. In that though the kids has celtics kin I liked. It is twitter. Handle says the kid and then it also says Celtics get okay. I'll keep getting your thoughts on it and I want you guys to keep chiming in AAA say. ESPN eight eight eight seven to nine. Three seven. Seven six in the meantime by the way when you're done watching this and you finished watching listening to our podcast. Hang out the show coming out three to six. Today I'll be hanging out for three three to six in for will cain with aerial Awani. I mentioned that because Ariel is our biggest MMA expert. He's the man the myth the legend when it comes to it and there's a lot of emanate MMA to talk about. Because John Boehner Jones is in action. And the guys Maxon. Stephen wanted to talk about the fight. That comes Saturday. Night versus the twelve Dominic Reyes for the lightweight championship. That by the way you can check it out ten. PM EASTERN ON ESPN plus pay per view. Don't forget to check it out. In the meantime this is what Steven A.. And Max had to say about John Boehner Jones and this fight. I'm interested in knowing how you feel about where you are now. And what is it that you feel. You have to prove Ivano you just alluded to it. But I'm only asking that question in this regard particularly with the conor. McGregor is of the world in mega meadow so the world and others not only. Did you know Conor McGregor won his last fight but not only are they winners their box office and people look at you and that's okay and he is clearly one of the greatest ever. I WANNA. Yeah no do you feel any kind of pressure to be box office to win in spectacular fashion because of the direction the UFC seems to be going in. or You just walk out there with a w no matter what I look at. It could be even connor and I see How internationally known they are and inspires me for sure to try to work on my branding? A little bit more outside of fighting but at the end of the day for me the it's not about making the most money it's not about being the most famous is about being the guy that people are going to talk about fifty one hundred years from now that that's that's really they were gets me out of the bed in the morning and at the end of the day no disrespect to connor because I I love what he's doing for our sport. I don't think he's going to be in conversation. And when people are sitting around at a barbershop talking about the greatest martial artists in the world and so I'm very aware that and so I think I think the the box office came come. Eventually I'm only thirty two You know but for the most part Those records you know. Those records are very hard to get. And that's what really gets me on in the morning as as a fight fan. I love hearing you say that. But you mentioned connor if someone asked me John Up Straight up. WHO's the best pound for pound mark mixed martial arts? You ever seen at this moment and I know it's still early. I'd say near Mogomedov based on what I've seen so far for I think you and Anderson Silva you Anderson Silva Nurmatias Metal Malia bring up I think eventually he got to that level though the Matt Hughes fighter earlier but but what do you think of Khabib Right. Now you know I I. I think it'd be an amazing fighter. I think he's done a great job representing the UFC's a great ambassador for our sport But if if you were to ask some experts about about myself and could be. I think most people would be able to tell. Resumes are completely different. There's a deeper. I've thought so so many world champions under my bill that have to feed it could be a lot of his. Victories are against a lot of people that are relatively unknown and where I've been fighting legends since I was a young man. There's no there's no question that your resume is deeper i. I don't mean who's WHO's accomplished more I'm talking about just the eyeball test. What do you mean by that test? Ner Mogomedov in a sport where it seemed early on the one whose base is the ground game usually has an advantage manage versus. The Guy who's best known for striking is the best example. I can think of the guy who's ground game ridiculous and then can also stand up right. Yeah his game is really is really not much to write home about. I really don't want to insult my fellow martial artist in the. I don't want to insult these guys you know I'm happy for everyone. Like I said some guys are more popular. Some some guys make money. It's always going to be kind of an opinion thing but by the time I leave the sport you know. I don't think there's going to be much argument. You live up as John. John Assuming you live up to what you say. You're going to do who this weekend and I have no reason to doubt you. There has been a lot of noise about you fighting it the heavyweight level. I want to know how much credence should we give to that and more importantly why do you want to do that if indeed that is what you WanNa do though some big boys up at the heavyweight division. Why do you want to do that? There are some really big guys at the heavyweight division. You know I'm very aware that you know fighting heavyweights as a lot more dangerous. You get hit a lot harder. I think concussions nations are a lot more common and I really liked to protect my brain as best as I can but I also yeah absolutely voted. What about I also know that in order to be to put a lot of this pound for pound or who's degraded conversation a risk to rest? I'm going to have to maybe obtain a second bill in a different way class. I think that really set me apart from a lot of the guys so I'm only getting better as a professional. I think I'm I'm at a place. I got the team around me now. That could get me to that way class in a safe and healthy way and I'm excited for when it does happen. Oh I see nothing but good things. I've been being against my brothers and my whole life. Where both bigger than me both super bowl champions and and I feel like I'm ready for that land? So aw it'll happen sooner or later right now. Just feel like so much. The things are happening in the light heavyweight division and they say if it's not broke don't fix it so I'm just GonNa take it one day timeline way of saying this Saturday night. Don't forget Jones fight Saturday night versus twelve dominic graves for the lightweight championship ten pm on. ESPN plus pay per view and again from and three to six PM. Today I'll be with will cain. We'll be on the show with Aerial Hawaii. We'll get his thoughts on the fight coming up to. I don't need to correct any callers because you guys do at twitter is relentless Ryan says wait. Did that last caller just say the Houston Rockets or the biggest threat to the Lakers. Please has terrible. It's the clippers or bucks. That's it nobody else has a chance. Joseph says that call says the Houston Rockets. The biggest threat to the Lakers needs to be drug tested. The moves they are making in. My opinion makes him worse. Not Better I love it. Everyone is being relentless to each other on social media once you guys keep chiming. I'm an triple eight say. ESPN eight seven nine. Three seven seven six. WHO's the biggest threat to the Lakers? Winning it all also you can tweet me at Jason Fitz Hashtag. I take all of this happens. Because there's questions about Lebron whether or not he can keep the style of play up Guinea. Keep doing what he's doing. So the Lakers can keep winning here with the panel. Had to say next I take your take on. ESPN.

"Winning it all home will get more of your thoughts but in the meantime there was other. NBA News yesterday that the Committee the Committee I keep on him calling the playoff that the panel got to react to maximum Stephen. There's plenty to say about the mega trade yesterday. That sent clink Cappella away from the rockets. The question is what does it mean for. Houston Mike Dan Tony specifically possibly. I'm not sure. But possibly Daryl Morey ah both on the clock they gotta get done. I'm GonNa say this again. I've spoken to Mr Fatigue and a while the only for the rock is he obviously has been on the show. Obviously I've spoken to him on many any many occasions. This man is not playing. I don't know how serious how much more serious I can be about that. He's not playing. There is a standard that he believes Faira. Unfair needs to be met and he's watching all of this. He purchased a team a few years ago. He spent the first couple of years watching and observing and learning according to him. Those were his words. He believes he has arrived to the point. Point where he can at least judge what his personnel is doing. So let's analyze maxwell second what's transpiring the other night Houston Rockets win a game. They Ghost Mall. They don't play a player over six feet. Six that's the first time that's happened in the NBA. Since nineteen sixty three with the New York Knicks. Okay they win this game but let me tell you what appeals from it. I saw the quotes from Dan. Tony you have to keep up with us right because those people were speculating. You're sacrificing rebounding. You're sacrificing defense not on perimeter because Robert Covington was a plan for the sixers before getting traded to Minnesota. And he's a damn good perimeter defender and he buffers your perimeter defense and obviously with a lot of teams in the league. You know predicated success for perimeter. Play to improve your perimeter defense. There's nothing wrong with that. The flip side to it. Is that the rim protection rebounding down low and stuff like that. It's being sacrificed. Leist Dantonio unapologetic about that. Why is that relevant? Because yet again here we all would houston. Try Something Major Ager props to Daryl Morey for doing something. He doesn't stand still. He doesn't stand pat he's constantly going for it. All of those things are true and he should be applauded with. I'll just I'm just saying you work if one that he ain't applauded your aspirin he's applauding result. Good friend and at some point Tom. They're going to have to produce good for Titas for having that standard. I will remind people though what was the. What were the Houston Rockets? Really before Daryl Morey like there are two ways you could wind up on second round treadmill. You could be a forty eight win team fifty one team that winds up on a second round treadmill. Because you're just going to keep banging your head against the wall. Your system isn't good enough really because you don't have Lebron James or Leonard someone quite on that level then glues James Harden in the playoffs or you can try something new. You'll be on the same second round treadmill. Maybe but maybe with fifty eight wins. And maybe at least you have it. You're you're giving yourself a chance right Daryl. Morey was with took over a team without Lebron on James. Anthony Davis someone like that and he built this up he identify James Harden. That dude can be much more than people realize stuff like that when when you go small ball. It's not about hype has really has nothing to do with it. Because basketball select out for the percentage of seven footers in the world in the NBA NBA is high of six. footers is low. It's an advantage to be tall but to play the kind of basketball. Daryl Morey wants you to play or Mike d'antoni only in this case. It's easier to find that among shorter player so he's not saying heights not important he's saying I'm GONNA put a heavier emphasis on what we need these guys to do even even if we have to sacrifice him he's just dealing with reality and that's what more is done. The whole time he's dealt with the reality of his situation and taken enrolled all the dice on trying to make the most of it and he's doing the same thing where I disagree with you and I think that you're being very very unfair because of the position that we're in Max Kellerman. We ain't competing. We win if we were competing it would be a problem. You know all say. Let's have it comes in what we I mean. Is that what we WANNA do now. I'm saying it could at the time we go with what I'm saying to you. Is this the point. I'm trying to make. Is that at some point in time. It's not raw for Fatih to look God we competitors. We're GONNA be in the playoffs. We're going to get to the second round trying to tell me with the money that I spent that I don't have a right at some point in time to want more. I mean at some point in time. Will you knocking on a door knocking on the door knocking on a door step so I gotta roll and they better paint. I believe I don't believe that. Come playoff time you win where you can't stop people now again. They're better defended their better. Defensively on a perimeter. Yeah get it done but you're sacrificing the interior your sacrifice and we've got. I don't know but I'm telling you this. Stay here with me. If Mike did Tony gets himself bounced out in the second round of the playoffs. Dystopia new coach in Houston. But then hug it within about seventy right and good four for Tito for having that standard but I want. I don't mess with Morrie. I wonder if the more I want already this. Let's keep in mind. And I'm like look at David Tepper. And what what he's done right at the panthers making change came in to basically successful franchise okay and he said no not good enough. Okay having a winning record was it's not good enough. We need need to do better. And I think we're at a dead end. We need to change something right good for him but same thing with data that I said about now. Let's pay very close attention. If he does get rid. Would've Dan Tony Maury. Let's say for a second. Let's pay very close attention to what comes next the next five years the next several show. Because there's really fifty I five plus shows a year and making playoffs. But what I'm saying to you is if you smell a number one coming from the basement you been win and you've been top four top for like fun at some point Tom. You gotta kick the door in. And I don't think I don't want Dantonio. I liked that Tony Okay and I think he's brilliant offensively. But here's the question. The thing about it is James Harden loves this man what he has done for James Harden career is undeniable undeniable. But it's GonNa win you the chaff. You know what I'll say. Is that GonNa win you channel. What I'll say to that? If he loves Dan Tony so much. Jay Talk US needs to sink shots when it matters most okay and then this won't be an issue. All or the coach can buffer his defense to such a degree. Yeah that thing. I don't say that you can buffer your deep into such a degree that even when a cat is missing shots you hold people shutting them down you gotTa Stop Somebody Audie. They considering the pace considering how many threes they take it how efficient and expenses their defense last point. PJ Tucker be careful about him out. Every night toughest Asami give the brother break the rockets become almost an afterthought in this conversation I take your take on. ESPN ESPN radio. What we want from you your take? Who is the biggest threat to the Lakers? Winning it all triple eight say. ESPN eight seven to nine. Three seven. Seven six. That's how you you get in on the conversation at Jason Fitz Hashtag. I take you can also get in that way. We have a bunch of tweets. A bunch of guys on hold right now triple eight say. ESPN eight eight eight. Seven two nine nine three seven seven six. WHO's the biggest threat to the Lakers? Winning it all. We'll get some of your take but I it's time for some straight talk. "Are you running a team that, you know, going to the next summer, you're having to completely re retool, again, that's been one of the Lakers. Big issues is a complete lack of continuity, you know throughout the organization and the roster. So are they going to be able to get some guys who they know can be part of their future, for at least this run with LeBron in a d, you know, presumably, at least? At least three years. And so I you can get a couple of guys on, on multi year deals to kind of, really start to see what this is gonna look like, you know, for, for several years, I, I don't you know, I was joking earlier that, you see certain relationships nNcholas cage, and Elvis, Presley's daughter. And you're like that's not gonna last forever. That's, that's not going to be Paul Newman and Joanna Woodward. And then, you know, I look at Lonzo in the pelicans, and I'm like, yeah. That's not that's not lasting forever. You know, loud, dad can't stay healthy. Darius garland could be the best player available at the number four pick. And I think in the NBA you just take best player available so they'll have another guard. Lonzo pelicans doesn't feel like a twelve year marriage to me Ingram. I concede Zion, I can see what say you on the Lonzo pelican fit. Yeah. I think Lonzo pretty critical juncture in his career he's going into year three played fifty games. I two years. You know, the dad. Had kind of disappeared for a while. But now he's obviously back back in the mix with you know Lonzo being on the move. And, and I think you know, this is a chance for Lonzo. Really last year. I thought he really kind of established himself, as, you know, more independent figure, and even even before he distanced himself from big baller brand. And obviously had the financial issue with with his family's financial manager. But the fact that, you know, he became a father, I really thought he stepped out of his dad shadow a little bit last year. And I think, you know, going back and when he was drafted I thought a situation like New Orleans, Milwaukee, something like that would have been much better for him get away from home did away from that, that spotlight. But it does seem like I, I think I think you have a good point that he's getting into a situation where he just is maybe going to be the odd man out. But I do think the chance for him to go play basketball out of the spotlight without the huge expectations of Los Angeles in a small market with a good young bath core around him. I think he pairs well with through holiday. That's a pretty good. Defensive backcourt, maybe the best defensive backcourt in the league, I would I, I'm curious to see how it can work out. But it does he does have to deliver on the hype and all the extracurricular stuff that has has always come with him. Well, first of all, thank you for coming off attorney leave, and congratulations to you and your family Bill. Hey, thanks very much calling. All right. Bill Orem, great writer, the athletic. We love having him on the show covers the Lakers, and he's going to go back and join his family, which is amazing. They have a noodle person in their life. And I got a bunch of older people in my life. Veteran newsman John Goulet. I heard on the news. This is the heard line news. So after the Anthony Davis Lakers trade was announced it only took about ten seconds for someone to find lavar ball and put a microphone in front of him. Boy, to get his thoughts on the deal. Shockingly, he did not think the Lakers may be decision. Guaranteed. In maybe the worst move make us evidently life. Now never win another championship guaranteed. Clearly a little upset that his son is now in New Orleans, the Lakers, which was always what he wanted. Do you think there's a chance the Lakers regret, including Lonzo in this deal long term? I think they would have rather kept him. I think it was. I would've I don't mind giving up the draft picks..

"Don't know if he left the building. No, that's then then he left the building. I'm happy for the guys that you know that played the game. And we want to tell you the truth. You know, this whole thing has been a dumpster fire. Did the gel? From North Carolina. These sites of NBA also retail. We have all kinds of the gas coming by today. Then Simmons is gonna hang soup bird will be here mantras zero miles bridges, but we're starting right here on set with our NBA insider Adrian merge announced he two thousand three NBA camp. Stephen Jackson, two thousand four NBA champ Rushie Wallace, the people Noah time, it is a hundred percent, right. You guys all heard at the top of the show Alvin gentry called the whole situation with the pelicans and Anthony Davis a quote dumpster fire. Not what you want from your coach that was after Anthony Davis suffered a shoulder injury during last night's game. Which was fortunately, not found to be serious. But he was ruled out for the rest of the game eighty then left the arena with his agent Rich Paul while the game was still going on that caused a lot of confusion. I actually just spoke to rich. He's here in the building with us. And he said a was leaving to get an MRI. Why since they don't have an MRI machine in the building. And this was under the direction of the team physician, but nobody on the medical staff told Alvin gentry I don't know of anyone told del devs because this morning, you sent shockwaves through the NBA with the news that the pelicans have indeed fired general manager del Dem's, the pelicans one one playoff series and Dem's entire nine year term with the team. So we've had discussions about his job security for a few seasons. Now what made it happen today? Well, the his dismissal was inevitable in this off season. It was coming and they had already started to get a sense of possible candidates names. My sense was this was going to wait until after the all star break. I do think the events of last night sped it up. But this was coming and their goal of this organization now is to this. Anthony Davis trade will be the most important decision going for this team. It's going to impact them for a decade to come. What do they get back for him? Then who gonna get back? Draft picks and who's going to select those players and who's going to set a new course for this organization. And so they're out in the marketplace or the first team in the league who's out in the marketplace looking for a new GM, and I'm told they're going to be willing to spend and they're going to be aggressive to try to bring in a high profile or whether it's a high profile or certainly a high performing GM candidate. I mean, this is a team that is owned by the Benson family. Gale Benson is running the team. Now this saints are their main opposition. And there's been a feeling in the NBA the pelicans in minute a little bit of a step child. Are you saying that they're going to take a more active approach when you say they're willing to spend hire an experienced GM? Also, I do think they've spent on salary there. They've Alvin gentry makes a competitive in base salary and a smaller market. I don't think it's been spending. I think they've been the decisions that Dell has has made to try and surround Anthony Davis with a supporting cast that was sustainable long-term. Listen, they've missed on a lot of draft picks free agent signings. Go back to MIR Arctic Solomon hill. They've overpaid for players who haven't performed and then go back to the DeMarcus cousins trade they have really nothing to show for it. And they traded a young player in buddy healed who if you put him on this team right now, you know, he'd he'd help solve a lot of their problems. So I think structurally and how the roster's been built how they've drafted develop players. These have all been issues, and it all came to a head here almost a decade with an organization into only Vance in the playoffs..

"Hello. This guy is the center of all the highly questionable things we do around here is he what do you like on the show today? Well football might be done. But love VAR ball as back wjm. No, oh, valid puppy. Those still in every double that doing Brown will end up on the Lakers were you trying to say Yuna Brown because I have no idea. What you just said there? I feel like you guys asked us exactly this same question four or five days ago. And at that time, I didn't think it was inevitable. The Lakers don't have that much to offer. The pelicans are only going to take the best offer and their petty clearly about everything the Lakers done on what they believe is collusion that is ended up an Anthony Davis fine for fifty thousand dollars and them after wasting one of the great players we've seen no longer being able to keep him around. No matter how much money they can offer more than everyone else. This can't feel inevitable until two thousand twenty because I don't think the pelicans are going to trade it through these players unless they can get a third team involved certainly doesn't feel inevitable. And I'm with you and believing that but check wolf is account and see what this supposed offer is from the Lakers. And then see what the pelicans counteroffer is. They want four I. Randers and second rounders essentially everybody on that roster not named LeBron James. And a lot of people are saying, whoa. That's too much. Well, that's the initial offer from the pelicans, and they will probably take a little bit less back. But the note on the pelicans, it makes me think they're really considering this is they want a young player with all NBA potential look around the landscape of the sport. And see how many of those are available to you even this off season. Maybe Jason Tatum with the Celtics. But will Boston do that. If they're afraid Kyrie is gonna leave this off season. And Anthony would then lead in twenty twenty go look at Brandon Ingram last few games. And see, hey, maybe you convince yourself again that he is that type of talent. And you take back a long Zo ball flip him for somebody else. There you go. You have a deal. It's more to your life. You have to absolutely get someone here who's going to help LeBron James age. He's been the most indestructible athlete in the sport this year. He's hurt. You see how bad that team looks without him. If you're the Lakers, you turn everything over to the team and say, take whatever you want except for LeBron. Because you need a superstar near and none of those guys on that roster gonna become that, you know, if the Lakers don't get this guy, you know. Well, they grind it's going to say, oh, my really. Really? It is the way to go. What the Barbosa saying that look don't give loan so lucid mentality. It has been awhile since we heard from lavar ball, his son has not been very good. And that tends to mute lavar ball. But if you put microphones around him, he'll say, we prefer to go to the sons, then New Orleans, and he'll say things like this that Luke Walton gave Lonzo losing mentality. I do believe that everyone in the Laker organization because lavar ball is had to back off because of things that have happened in the past..

"Players usually don't choose to play for three teams and three years talked about that multiple times Paul George state for why may leave. We'll see what happens what if a deal doesn't get done. And we're. Pass the trade deadline and he plays at my neck pelicans. My back my neck, and my lays out the season with the pelicans would any age the Celtics put together a package with all those young players and assets that could help really help them to rent anti Davis for one year. You're not ridding me in for one year. You bring them in getting them for million with the culture hope that convinces him the state. With the understanding that it could be a rental. And so you then challenges the u the challenge the player at his word. I just brought you into Toronto. We're number one. See we're good. You say you wanna be okay, Tinder, we are contending. So now if you leave it to a bad team. Oh, he's just trying to get paid. Just wanna be. He he what he was saying it really what he's about that exposes the player as well. Based on what his words Jalen rose, always talking about his Anthony Davis all day long friends one talking about his Anthony Davis, but quietly the warriors have come out in play. They now have won eleven straight games after beating the Victor Ola depot list Pacers last night. It will seem that they've really turned the corner and Steph curry gives a little bit of insight into what's going on that locker room. Let's. Fifty bitter. Quitting that kinda guess springs on. From also. Some thirty games playoff playoff time. Further evidence starting playoff mentality starting to ramp. It up started early. They've got thirty two games left in the season. Jalen rose. They currently have fourteen losses. How many losses? Do you think they will end the season with they currently have thirteen fourteen or team with thirty two games left? Approximately. I say they lose about six more. I think so those numbers in my head is well they're going to end up like sixty two twenty year. They're gonna get to sixty and the probably lose one at the end because they're just resting people. Absolutely. This this feels to me again, like the warriors are going to go on another run. Their cousins has been these. He's been involved. They've folded him in the warriors. Looked so good that it's almost like I prefer to talk about Anthony Davis because the championship is over. I'm going to think this over might as well get the playoffs saved this clip. Saved this clip January twenty nine it's going to be broken news. When it happens. They're going to be speed bumps for the Golden State Warriors. I disagree on a way to win in the western I disagree. I think it's gonna be like it was a couple years ago when when they breezed through the plano if they have to play against Houston and o'casey two teams that both have all star level players in the back court. The just so happen to have two guys on both of those teams that have won MVP's the past two seasons in another guy. Paul George who started in this year's all star game. Okay. See has a lot of Lynn do a lot of switching on a perimeter. That's a great recipe for going against the Golden State Warriors. They have a big Stephen Adams to play great make boogie work and or frustrate him and or drama and as a wildcard Roberson. Russell. And what he's the wildcard remember katie's to play with them clearly doesn't anymore. And also, we think be guard him. Steph instead of being at the three point line. He will be in the post. Oh, they're run their office. Angle be no hot. So of course, I love the warriors. Love the splash brothers love Steph curry, I feel like everybody else. They're the untouchables of the NBA true story. But this idea that they're about the breeze through the play offs like two eighty nine pistons and lose one game. Or like they did last year about two that ain't happened. There about two they are about to..

"He said he's not signing with the pelicans, quote, unquote, requested a trade. And now the pelicans they've released a statement. Let's take a look at what the pelicans had to say about all this. I love the wording in this relative to specific talks of trade. We will do this on our time line one that makes sense for our team, and it will not be dictated by those outside of our organization. We have also requested the league to strictly enforce the tampering rules associated with this transaction, Jalen rose. We all know what that says on the surface. But what are the pelicans really saying? With that statement, this is about to be ugly, nasty messy divorce. Oh, what makes you feel that way? Because the pelicans already feel like LeBron James has been tampering with Anthony Davis. They already understand that if the flavors called them and they look down at their phone area, code three one. Oh, three two three two one three on their fall, y'all better be talking about giving us five players or I'm sending yada voicemail, well, finishing about this was the time line stuff because the Lakers package their offer isn't necessarily going to change in the next week. And in the next eight months, so if you're the pelicans, aren't so this is what you have to offer me fine. Thank you very much. I'll take Anthony Davis and well play the Davis until the off season. And then I'll decide whether I want to take this offer from and you know, what else it does for New Orleans. It ruins it Rex this season. Oh, yeah. I mean, this isn't didn't look great to begin with especially with Anthony Davis being with this finger injury. So here's another question for you. Mr. rose, let's said they don't trade him by the trade deadline, which is very much a possibility based on everything. That will just reporting based on everything that we've read in this statement does Anthony Davis injuries linger a little longer does he play a little less. Does he try to stay fresh? How's it work? This is where things get awkward because now we were at first we were unified front we were pulling in the same direction, and we had the same goal when you say you don't wanna be here anymore. Now. There's a fork in a row, you're looking out for you. I'm looking out for me. So for the organization air for the fans, they're going to be monitoring what you just said really close. And if they think if they feel the he's not playing and he's healthy. That's really going to be an issue for his for his reputation will that's we saw this with Leonard last year. And Anthony Davis is of injury prone. Right. Like, he's you know, he's he's bit hurt. And he's got this finger issue. Now, could you say all went to go see the finger specialist? I got a second opinion. And they say that maybe I shouldn't play. And he makes sure that he doesn't get injured for the rest of the seats. Well, you'll have an entire state and legion of pelican fans also giving you the finger. No way, shape or form. Now, are you representing our best interest? When you tell us you wanna leave. 'cause you know, what this is a point that people never made. When when your best player says that like LeBron did in Cleveland, Katie did and o'casey, and he eventually tweeted sub tweeted Furner account tweeted what I'm about to say, you basically saying this coaching staff and these guys that I play with..

"That includes Lonzo ball Kyle Kuzma visas zoo, Botts any first round pick, so Shannon. If you're the pelicans, would you take that offer? No. Republicans really don't have any incentive to do this deal, especially now because guess what this same deal will be there for the Lakers. I mean, if they want to do this deal with the Laker. It'd be there in July for me skip is that the pelicans it to themselves to look around and see if there's a better off on the table. I don't know if there's a better offer. I don't know who who all interested in Anthony Davis because one of the wrist see not to get to five tracks. Gil, I believe to Ronald Toronto will regret giving what they gave up to get Kawai. If I don't believe who is gonna stay in. This is the risk that you run if you give up assets and draft and future assets for Anthony Davis because you're hoping that avair similar situation happens to you. What happened? Okay. See they traded for Paul George. We know he wanted to go to LA, but he got there after year being they're playing alongside Ross the fans embraced a Russ invade embraced him willing to share. The stardom in. Okay. See with it. And he said man, I love it. I'm not going to LA. I'm most a right here. You're hoping that happens with Anthony Davis. If he gives the wherever he's going Boston have tremendous assets. A Boston understand they know this get any deal for Anthony Davis is going to require Jason Tatum. So if you think you're going to be able to throw a will give you Rozier, and we'll give you this draft pick, and we'll give you Jalen Brown. No. There's not a deal. That's not going to start with Jason Tatum coming from Celtic. I just don't think skip they have the assets right now because. What if I mean you here? Okay. It's going to start with Kouzmin zoo box. And maybe Lonzo, okay? For me. I gotta store skip. And you know, I get as much as you want in the timeframe you need I open up the doors, take whatever you need other than LeBron James. You can have it all if you will Ingram, you won't Kuwait. You won't Josh heart you Alonzo, you won't zoo. Man. I of all the guys as mentioned the one guy that I really hate to see. But if you way scam sometimes you gotta let the hair go into high in this. What is going to take the close the deal? I'm sorry box. We really enjoyed you. We think you're going to be a nice nice young salmon this lead. But you got to go. I just don't know. I just don't see the incentive skill. If you leave me what incentive? Do I have to do? Right by you. Now, some people say, well, you know, cooler heads have been strands, and he's going to do right by this person. But you know, emotions are involved, and it's reported that the pelicans tried to steer Anthony Davis away from Rich Paul because they know what would this was going to entail because when it came down to it Anthony Davis supermax player, he really needs major everyday was gonna get the max five years two hundred forty million if he stayed in New Orleans. So does he need agent for that? What he goes? I'll know happy. We might get you ten percent less than the MAC. He's getting the max he signed Rich Paul for one reason to get him out of New Orleans into getting where..

"Kneeling in front of the them seems to have that kind of fact even give beyond the effect also though, right? So question what the effect is going to be. Here's the thing this has been done. We've been doing it for a while. Right. So with this having been been done for two years, it seems more like it's probably time to come up with something else like it's probably think of the new way to advance this. What I think happened in a lot of ways with the kneeling that was somewhat problematic is that that became the standard of what you do. So it almost became if you're not doing this exact thing, that's right. If people came back and looked at you, what are you doing? The expectation was y'all need to go out there and Neil. That's not the only way to go about doing this. And I do wonder what the next level of is going to be for the people who most invested because this is probably gone as far as it's going to go in terms of having an effect for the first year and a half. I think it absolutely had a positive effect even if there was some rocky road along the way. I don't know if you're gonna go it in years to end. The positive effect of also was you tracked it attention to this conversation that never really got paid attention to the hardest part about any protest. And now we're here, what are we doing? The harder part is that now what right? Next name is markets cousins. Cousins was introduced as a member of the warriors today. Thanks to video. We got from upcoming Showtime, sports documentary project, each cousins, we have an inside. Look at the moment, found out he was going to be on the warriors. He starts off the tailings, the level of interest he was getting from other teams. Let's listen. Resold teams. Pelicans was no offer understand. They big union wanna ruin it taking a chance on damage player. Cool. We reach out this other teams. We got answers light. We don't believe is a good fit or got to see what we're doing. When I rise the writing, that light, this kind of just boo during my talk to Katie talked to Steph and they were like, hey, oh, yeah. Do you know this is this is my suspect. This is this is my nuclear bone. I'm I'm a a warrior. warrior. Probably got a contract a decent contract from a bad team, but how does that help? Amari fighting Carini. Do you feel about soft music, DeMarcus cousins there? I feel like this obviously was DeMarcus cousins been, but I also get why he did this. I mean when he says herbs like this is my nuclear Bob at all that I think that obscure as the other stuff that was just as telling which was what else was he really gonna do. I mean, those other teams very clearly had a different perception of this man, DeMarcus cousins. Then the fans who responded to this certainly on social media did bow. The biggest fans of the warriors are the people who hate the warriors so much. I feel like these fans have more faith in this team and in this man, then this man might have in that team. I have in themselves. I mean. You don't know what they'd be saying about you. You don't like whether they're right or wrong or whatever it is like, it's not a good fit, whatever people think he's crazy. Like there's no way around if people think that he has talked to that he could ruin what it is that you have is seemed to go okay for him when he wasn't waters, but now they weren't going to be so many people putting up such a heavy investment onto coming off that sort of injury there. And I think look for a guy that's already made a lot of money. I get it. I'm willing to take five point three to go play for this team where I might be able to become champion guy. You know, by the way, I'm not playing till February anyway. Bright, right. No, he can be slid and us. If you can becoming off the bench, she can be honestly playing a game that's not so different from the game. He knows it's just that the warriors will use insulate scenarios where calls for a big man like this. Yeah, also we had this year with the haters..

"The i think i'd say just to add another layer of darkness to it i mean book use a free agent you know this guy was according to mark stein of the new york times was on track to get a five year one hundred seventy five million dollar contract this summer now they are going to have to come to terms on that contract presumably before he's one hundred percent healthy because they have essentially five months or so intil you know they're going to how you know july one free agency opened so you're gonna have some information on cousins is progress but not total information and i you know if if you're the pelicans amine on one side this sort of works as an excuse you know if you do if you're worried about paying cousins in any way if you had any holdups or whatever uh you know this gives you a little bit of an out from a pr standpoint but at the same time you had so much trouble getting talent down there in the first place you might be tied to him and he just paid holiday an awful lot of money can you pay cousins less than holiday even if he's coming off an injury i don't think so so this couture to to a situation where davis is now being surrounded by holiday who might be the most overpay point guard in the league and causing sue depending on his health could wind up being one of the most overpay paid centers in the league as well that twelve months fastforward from where we are today it could actually be darker at that point in terms of davis's chances to do anything meaningful on his current contract in terms of playoff success and so forth than it is right now and that's a scary thought yemen it'll be interesting to see what direction they go because on the one hand it like you mentioned there's now built at excuse for gentry four dealt dance like ever went down there can point to this bogey injury rightfully so by the way and say that this is uh this is where the season unravel like watching the pelicans on sunday it was just it was har like you could see.
