U.S. Economy Added 559,000 Jobs in May

"It has been a week of jobs here on this program because their jobs. And that's basically the whole smash right now as you know. The economy added five hundred fifty nine thousand of them in may and that as i'm sure you'll be shocked to here is where we will begin the next six and a half minutes of our day katherine pels at the washington post k davidson wall street journal. Hey do okay so let me start with you And what i said in the open. Their expectations chm expectations. Even though i probably said that wrong Here's the deal all right fine. Five hundred fifty. Nine thousand jobs is a lot of but a lot of the coverage this morning and through the day has been ono we missed. It's not as many as we thought. And i just want to push back on that for a minute because let's be honest. This is a lot of jobs. It's a lot of jobs and look the forecasts. Were all over the place. There's a lot of uncertainty right now. Some people were expecting a million jobs. Some people were expecting three hundred thousand jobs. Right smack in the middle. Was this six hundred. Seventy thousand number that get cited as the consensus but consensus implies a lot more unanimity Than there actually was so there was a lot of uncertainty year right. I will say that it wasn't that long ago. That economists were forecasting in the neighborhood. More or economists. I should say we're forecasting the neighborhood of a million jobs and like last month last month and expectations have been ratcheted down and so in that sense. I guess it is a little disappointing. But look where. We are clearly recovering. And it's gonna take a while before we get back to where we were.

Many Americans are hesitant to get the covert 19 vaccine. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, spoke with ABC is George Stephanopoulos about what it will take to convince them to get their shots. I think we need to listen to what the concerns are of people who are still on the fence. And those concerns ought to be addressed carefully. And we shouldn't slip into this zone of somehow blaming people who haven't signed up yet to roll up their sleeves. We need to answer those questions on one of the things I would encourage people to go and look at Is this new covert 19 community core. If you just Google on the phrase we can do this, you can look and see the information's there. 400 more organizations have joined most of them community organizations, organizations of doctors. That ought to give you a lot of confidence, and it's not just government. People like me that are advocating for this. It is, in fact, the whole country that needs this. We're in this together. We Americans are pretty good at doing things together. Once we get that kind of calling. So have a look at that. And then consider if you're one of those people waiting, Maybe it's time. Don't look at the evidence and decide whether it's time to just go forward and be part of the solution. And that's what the president is calling us to do to get 70% of Americans without least one dose by July, 4th. We could do that Looks like we're heading toward approval for administering the vaccine to adolescents. 12 to 15 years old. How big a difference will that make? And what do you say to the parents of those 12 to 15 year olds who asked if their kids should get vaccinated? Well, One of them is my granddaughter. And I could tell you there's a lot of excitement in Michigan about the idea that the fifth of my five grandchildren will now be eligible. If FDA goes ahead with this emergency use authorization. Obviously this is going to be really important for the fall. High school kids in particular are known to be just about a susceptible and just about as good as passing along this virus as other young adults. It will be really great to be able then to be get that immunization schedule going well in advance of September, So I'm certainly hopeful FDA when they look at all the data will judge this to be safe and effective and will give a green light and as you heard from the president The U. S is ready to go in terms of making those available and again look at the data that's been out there now and other situations and will be released. In this case. It's remarkable how safe and effective these messenger RNA vaccines have turned out to be. And that's what the Fizer vaccine is. So I think parents yet get informed. Look at the information make a decision. Probably your teenager wants to be part of that decision, and I think the evidence will lead you in the direction of saying Yeah, Let's get immunization out there. Let's get this behind us. Redick: Pels, Griffin didn't honor word with trade

"Jj redick longtime veteran fifteen years in the leak. Good player not great good. Though he requested a trade from new orleans pelicans in november and asked them to send them somewhere one he was up. You know not upset but hey drew's gone through holiday. That was a big part of why i came here. And you know. I would like to be close to my family in brooklyn close enough where i can go see him on off days things like that. They told him. Bet you got it. And of course they trade him to dallas so he's upset because he says they didn't keep their word. Here's jj reading on his own podcast. My understanding all along was that. I was going to get a buy out. And if i was going to be traded it was going to be to a team in the northeast where i was closer to home and i'd be able to see my family for the last two or three months of the season obvious that didn't happen. I don't think you're gonna get honesty from that front office. Just objectively speaking. I don't that's not an opinion. i just don't think you're going to get that. But i think i was a little naive in thinking that because i was in year fifteen and you know i had at least attempt to do things right throughout my career and i honored my end of the bargain but in terms of this front office. Yeah i mean. It's it's not something where i would expect. Certainly the agents that that worked on this with me to ever to ever trust that front office again.

They said that. Wanda is basically the kind of like the conductor of chaos magic and we'll we'll jump into chaos magic here in a little bit. But what were you saying. Steven i was gonna say. I took the confirmation that that they are heading there without officially giving her the label of the next being like giving their own cute different name. Which is the chaos which or whatever it was using chaos magic but chaos. Magic is something completely different than the next being chaos magic but it's basically chaos. Magic is basically create a had it written down what agatha said She says to the this. Chaos magic wanda that makes you the scarlet witch And then it says. I don't know it's from somewhere else. But is chaos. Magic is the name of magic so powerful that it was thought to be nonexistent. Even by the source where supreme this magic can be manipulated warp and reconstruct the very fabric of existence and reality for the user and it brings total destruction to the cosmos. Yeah rebecca slow. Isn't that i think that's the thing that's not from this episode though that is from like you know like marvel wicky fandom which i mean trip definitely could be something that she's able to do but in this episode the way that agatha described it was basically you can with your yet. She's capable of creating spontaneous creation. She says you have no idea how dangerous you are. You're supposed to be a myth. A being capable of spontaneous creation. That is filled with motivating stories of people from around the world and their respective challenges and triumphs. "I do believe the 29th of January. It is always to have you along. Everybody we have had I think you can fairly say a little bit of everything. This week. We had us some Jay Powell. We had us some video game. Social media stock market. Something that is still going on. Today. We had a some Janet Yellen. And right now we've got linen Lopez. She's a business insider. And Catherine Rampell. She is at the Washington Post that you too. Okay, call. So Katherine, let me start with you and we'll start. I think with economic relief, the $1.9 trillion stimulus plan that the president wants. And Jay Powell, the Fed chair, saying this week I'm gonna do whatever it takes to keep this economy going. In fact, he said. I don't care about inflation. I don't care about anything. The question is, Is anybody listening? Who's anybody here? I mean, it's it's pretty clear. It's pretty clear that the Biden administration wants this thing through Democrats wanted through. The real question is whether they try to cobble together some Republican votes s so that they could pass this legislation or some version of it through the usual process. Or if they throw their hands up and say, Never mind. Republicans don't want to play ball. We're going to do it through a process called reconciliation. Which on Lee really requires a straight party line vote at this point, but it limits some of their ambition because you can't do all of the things on the wish List on violence wish list. Through reconciliation. So you know, we'll see what happens. If Republicans don't want to cooperate with us, That's their problem. We're going to do it the way we're gonna do it with just the Democrats. So, Linna, Jenny Yellen in the Oval Office, said today at a briefing with with president vice president a couple of other people, she in essence said in her very Ellen, Ask way, she said, Go bigger. Go home. We need 1.9 trillion now. You make it less bad later on, Gwen does have to wonder whether or not the body administration's gonna have to settle for something piecemeal. You know, it's not just Janet Yellen, that same man. Honesty. I am asked. The entire world is depending on the U. S economy getting back on its feet. What if we Parents, basically saying is when we open up on day one. We want to be ready to go as we get these vaccines rolling that we want the economy to be as helpful, healthiest possible so that the entire world can get back on the feet and You know, it's it's not just us. China's waiting for this. Everybody's waiting for us to get this, right. All right. So, Catherine, let me ask you this, though we get the vaccine right and fingers crossed. You know, it's all coming together and kids and go back to school in August. And what have you I do wonder, though, whether a slowdown in getting relief out in whatever dimension 1.9 trillion or what? Does not risk something like 2009, where we in essence lost a decade of economic recovery because we went to small. That's really the risk here that even when there is widespread distribution of the vaccine if there is permanent damage to what's known as the country's productive capacity, meaning things like people are no longer attached to the labor force. Otherwise viable. Small businesses are permanently closed. You know, a generation of Children is behind on their their usual milestones, and then we grew up to become Less productive little workers. You know, all of that will weigh on the economy in the long run, so the real goal is to limit the amount of that damage so that we can just kind of More or less flip a switch. I mean, it won't be quite that easy, obviously. But right now, you know, it's about providing relief to people and again limiting this scarring. Okay, So Lynette, let me turn to you and the stock market. Social media. Holy cow, You kind of can't look away from its story of the week. Gamestop and read it and the volatility and the Push and pull between what he called retail investors and some of the big hedge funds on Wall Street. The first thing I want to say to you when I want to get your take on this is compared with all the other problems in this economy. This game stop thing is not really that big a deal discuss But it's more a question of regulations. This is the FCC's first challenge on one of the problems that we're witnessing here is that Robin Hood, the app in a lot of these traitors and using to trade really let people do all kinds of crazy things that That other pretty platforms wouldn't allow them to do it aloud, really novice traders to take on all sorts of leverage. And it's clear that experienced traders were in the rob Visa credit Tattler telling the novice traders what to do so that their trade out even more power. So it's like, you know, one of the questions here is When is the financial system going to catch up with the technology that people are using? So it's a Silicon Valley? This is Wall Street. Uh, story in that way on and we have not yet come firms very temper. Who is going to be the head of the SEC? He was the head of the SEC, gin and a global, which was a big catastrophe when a broker dealer ran out of money. That is that is also a broker dealer on last week. Uh, he er r Yes. The other day. Um The other day. It seems like it ran out of money. That's what it was like they had to draw him. Credit. Dentler works for the Obama administration after the financial crisis and help cobble together regulation, so hopefully he can deal with this problem. Um and I don't know. Yeah, it look, it's a big deal in in market regulatory turns with Katherine. I want to ask you this so much. What's going on with this with this game stop story and now has spread to other stocks and all of that, But the Subtext. Here is regular people being able to do on Wall Street what hedge fund people and gazillionaires have been able to do on Wall Street forever. You know, I feel like people are trying to read into these recent events, some sort of like morality tale or terrible that it's David takes on Goliath. That's the narrative here, but the sum of the Goliaths are not doing so well. It's not clear. David's going to come out so great in the end either Write that right now, the stocks the stock values airway up in these several, um For the several companies Gamestop just being one of them, but there are pretty far away from their fundamentals. Right At some point, these guys, we got these David's, You know, the underdogs are probably some some of them anyway, We're gonna lose their shirts, and it's not even clear that there isn't another Goliath behind the scenes who stands to clean up after it. Right. So I think that people have read into this this. You know this Like heartfelt populist, you know, morality tale, but it's not really clear it's going to turn out so well for the populist, So I think we need to be careful about imposing that narrative on what's going on, at least, if you know because you don't want to. We want to encourage people to like gamble away their life savings just because they think it's gonna you know, get back at some hedge fund. Be careful on Wall Street. Always people be careful in the Wall Street Always linnet Lopez it business inside. Katherine Pel. She's at the Washington Post. Thanks you too. Thanks, guy. Gamestop shares on this Friday. "I don't condone what she said. Okay, but but I also and you said yesterday you said, you know, I believe that people who threaten the president or already hangover or, you know, she made some pretty nasty comments. Okay to me. I think that it's a national security risk. And that's what I was asking you yesterday. Yes, I think she should. She should be arrested. You should be the brief for 48 hours without any sleep. Okay? And I compared that to the squad with some of the things she with some of the things that they said, because it insulted me. Not only do I think it's a national security risk, and that's all the questions I was going to ask you. So let's go with that for a second. Hold on, run, Let's go with that. 1st 2nd hear me out on this. So keep in mind that Marjorie Taylor Greene endorsed the killing of a former president endorsed the killing of FBI agents said that some of these school shootings didn't even happen. Can you explain to me a statement that any member of the squad made now hear what I say here that even comes close? The dangerous level of some of the statements that Marjorie Taylor Greene has said, And if there is a quote out there that you think is Justus batter dangerous? I would love to hear it right now. Okay. You've got me there. But is it anti Semitism taking a whole group? I believe. Okay, So let me respond to that. Let me respond to that. Okay, Ron, I've made it very clear that I believe Ilhan Omar is an anti Semite. Okay, now I'm Jewish. Okay, I don't like that. She's not the only one there. There's steps. There's these three Democratic politicians are the same seconds. He's find out what he needs. Because I'm going to go again. Like I learned from you. I'm trying to run I'm trying to solve start over again. Um, I'm Jewish. Ilhan. Omar, In my estimation, has made some anti Semitic comments in the past. Now now. Well, I don't know if to leave is risen to the level of Ilhan Omar and I don't. I don't know if I feel that I don't like to leave. I don't like her. I wouldn't vote for her. But there's a difference between not liking somebody. And some I'm making anti Semitic comments, which, by the way, Ilhan Omar has apologized for major Marjorie Taylor. Greene has never apologized for any other comments. That's number one number two Ilhan Omar made a statement about all about the Benjamins and she's made some comments about Israel that I completely disagree with that you can construe is anti Semitic comments. However, nothing that Ilhan Omar has said, and I mean nothing that anyone in the squatter Ilhan Omar has said rises to the level of endorsing of killing people and coming up with conspiracy theories that serious mass shootings in this country did not happen. There are different levels that rise to two different consequences. And I don't believe anything. Okay, so I don't believe anything. I don't believe anything that Ilhan Omar has said would rise to the level of throw her out of office. She's a danger to this country. You don't think Johan Omar saying, Burn everything down? If something again you're misquoting what she said I'm not actually you're misquoting. What's she said? I've absolutely okay. Maybe the exactly. You know, JD. I do. I do agree with him because he does correct me and so do you, But I'm man enough. To receive the correction, But what I'm trying to say to you on the other end, Brian is lately I've been disagreeing with you. And you've been cutting my time and JD has mentioned to you On both ways because he likes to interrupt you a lot. So I see that both of you guys are right. What I'm trying to say is I do respect you. I don't attack you. I'd appreciate a little bit more time there like you're giving me think I think I always give you ample time. But when we when we have a full board of calls, we have to get to other calls Run and 72257. Ron. Thanks. 7022575396 is the number to call. Of course we're talking About Marjorie Taylor Greene. And the fact that Dina Titus He's joining the call for expelling Taylor Greene. And now we have the parents of Ah lot of these Children who are sadly killed and murdered in some of these school shootings that are intensifying the push. For the removal of grain, and by the way I am on board with them, and I can't even imagine I'm already fired up and angry at this horrific human being. In Marjorie Telegram. She's a disgusting person than I think Most people would agree with me on that. And most people are man enough to admit that Republican or Democrat but Absolutely. Feel horrible for Victims. Anybody involved in these shootings when you hear somebody like green, speak it. It's just so disgusting to 575396. I believe we have Angelo. Next on the line. Angelo, what's on your mind? Hey, what's up, Angela? 2575396 go to Carl. We haven't talked to Carl in a while. Hi, Carl. What's on your mind, man? Clear, Gentlemen, Listen, Forest, the screen goes she I find her to be extremely not grounded Psychologically, there's something wrong there, and I think she's hitting a point where she's gonna completely crack up one of these days, and she's gonna live in a room with padded walls. That's what's gonna happen to her. I hope something very sick Woman. Very sick girl. Do you agree with me? I agree with you, Carl. Do you agree with me that there are two different types of people. There are the people that are willing to call out Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican or Democrat. There are human beings out there. They're willing to say this woman is despicable Woman. The things she has said hurt people, They're dangerous. She's despicable there. Are there any one thing real quick? I don't think it's her fault. I e. I don't think she's capable of actually. Having a thought as to should I say this or should I say this? It's her mental condition makes her say it. Do you think there's a possibility that she could have just been radicalized? That's possible too. And one of the point for you, Brian, You're like this. I heard somebody said that for last year, there was no induct tees and said Baseball Hall of Fame. I know if you heard that Look there. Woz. That's a lie. I know this trumps being inducted because the biggest Pel ball of the year, so I just want to let you know that was that was really great to across Like that one. Carl, I have a feeling if it was about Locascio, Cortez James G might have found it funny. I appreciate the call. Thank you. There's there's not a chance. I would've found that 45 sevens about anybody to five cents too cheesy for me. Brian 2575396 is the number to call. Let's go toe. Larry, Larry's next on the Vegas Take. Hi, Larry. What's on your Mind? What's going on there? All right. Just get Jenny from support here on. You know, you're always thinking. What about it, But I and I agree with you to get your wrongs don't make a right, but I think the fact that he's merely trying to point out hypocrisy is a good thing. Now on on the other. No, you're saying that Nobody said anything about it. Don't get me wrong. I I will not condone what Marjorie said. She didn't say that they are They sitting Congress doesn't matter. So there's that doesn't matter. I can kind of be on that. But does more than why did you bring it up? You're not not think they'll see. Is, uh, equally as dangerous. Nope. Here's why Here's like or no, Larry. Sorry for before you say. Well, the answer is known. What? I'm telling you why I think she is. Okay, So you asked me a question. Do you want me to answer it? Or do you want to just keep going to finish my question? Brian, You're cutting people off like you didn't. You didn't finish your question. Okay. Finish your question. You said Do you know I think that her accusing a sitting senator of trying to have her killed is equally as dangerous. Okay. Can I answer now? Or are you still you still go with your question? Okay, so I knew what your question was. The answer is no. And here's why I believe people like Ted Cruz. Who helped enable the president of the United States to spread a false line. Now, if these people didn't do that, if the president of the United States didn't call widespread voter fraud, didn't say that Joe Biden cheated in the Democrats cheated and he wasn't a legitimate president. There is no way that the insurrection would have taken place knowing JD JD, Please let me finish. So J d I don't care if you think I'm off base, Let me finish. Please don't address there was no one saw rejection. J D I don't care if you think I'm off base yourself. You're saying that take J D Please let me finish my answer. Please don't interrupt. Larry. "Who was a cyclist and I had a background as you know of teaching cycling for so long, and I was a master instructor for Schwinn, and I'd traveled through the United States and Brazil teaching teachers. How to teach and I thought, And with my racing background, I thought, I think I have a lot to offer you and they said OK, Yeah, The rest is history here. I have to tell me about your first pellet on class. And how that went for you Just tell us that story. The first class was this staged class that I was like my audition class. I actually brought people who had been taking my class is over previous years I brought them With me and filled the studio. Funny. I played this song. You heard me play 1000 times in class of those Japanese Kodo drums. Yes. And it was during that song. I think I don't know Early two thousands, where I played those Kodo drums and spontaneously as the finisher to the class, I had said. Now I want you to turn that resistance up until you think you can't handle it and tell yourself Am, I can I will I do. Go the first time that happened, which was a completely spontaneous thing. The room just erupted. And after class and days after class and weeks after class, people will continue to come up to me and stop me and say those words. I can't get that out of my head. That is changing how I'm thinking And that is your mantra. You know, I know that many people have Montrose and you know other instructors have mantra is this became your calling card to some extent, right? Absolutely this class at Pel Aton was very, very planned and I put that song in there, and I used my sort of theatrically staged. Q. It was one of those classes where it was planned. And yet it was spontaneous. It was organic and authentic. It felt a little bit magical where you know when the music swells and the effort swells with the music and the words right when you think you can't The words come out, and you do it was that kind of class for may. "You're back. It's Jill on money. And this hour we are talking to a really inspirational guest. Her name is Christine Dare call She is an instructor at hell. Aton, the awesome bike company where I have a pallet on. I mean, the I'm in the tank for pellet on love Palestine but also have a Schwinn bicycle. Mark knows I have one of each Okay, So Christine has had a fascinating journey in her career. And that's why I love having these kinds of stories and guess who we can really Get down and dirty with, like, what were the decisions you made? How did you find yourself in a certain place? And not always. Is it so planned out? I know my career hasn't been planned out. So here is more of our interview with Christine Dare call So you're in New York City. Your bike messenger. Are you still pursuing acting? Yes. I got an agent right away. I was very, very proud of that That I immediately had an agent and s O. I'm auditioning but in auditioning between runs As a messenger, So I'm wearing a skirt or a dress folded up under my jacket over my bike shorts on and I would lock up my bike. I would hop into an audition. And sadly, though you had to wait a lot, and I ended up being very, very late with a lot of packages. It was always quote on burning a flat. But where are you? I got a flat when I was actually at a Shakespeare audition, so I'd run up like try to get a grease out from under my nails. Put on some lipstick in an elevator. Take off my helmet. Shut it in the bag. Go without some Lady Macbeth. Look back on the bike and finished delivering the package. I was trying to find a way to make it work, but I couldn't get cast. I don't know about that audition. Er, I didn't look the part. Here's the thing. I never played my age. I always played it like the Lady Macbeth or the Ring of Scare. The older character, the ground, Damar, the diva, and at 23, You're the angio. And if you look up the ingenue that You're not gonna get cast, so I went back to my agent and I said, I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong, And they said you might not get cast for 10 years. But you just you keep at it What I have things to do like and at the same time I have become very close with a bunch of messengers, some of whom were cyclist who raised And you know, at the end of many of these days of Miss injuring, we would ride home a bunch of us through Central Park and somebody would say Sprint and we would go and I want a lot of the sprints and He said. You know, you really should think about racing. And one of them rode a fixed gear bike, which is what we race on the village room and he let me try it. And I like something completely changed inside of me. The first time I got on that kind of bike. It's a completely different experience because you cannot coast. It's fixed to the wheel. So you are completely committed to the momentum of the spike and you have to control it with the pressure. In your legs by either pushing to make it go faster or floating the pedals to maintain speed or resisting that momentum. To slow yourself down. So fixed you bicycle sounds pretty dangerous. Any fear When you hopped on that fixed gear, I will tell you that I am a lot afraid, often. And I can't Tolerate. Sitting in fear facing that fear conquering that fear is the only antidote and every single time a new season comes around. Then I get on that track again. I always have this moment. Whoa! How did I get here? How? Who am I like I like doing this is nuts. And I love it. It's like an ish if you scratch it and get over it. Okay, let's fast forward. When did you start your life? At Pellet on? I came to Pel Aton after having teaching. Oh, God, I don't even know the math anymore. How many years have been teaching at that point and several different places in 2014 in the fall. I think I was the no courtly 8 9/10 instructor Politan had just opened the studio on 23rd Street in Chelsea In May of 2014. You were an extremely successful spin instructor in New York City. What made you take the leap to pallet on? Well, I actually needed a change from where I had been working Previously. It was a little bit of Ah, a first fit, and I just knew I needed something different. And I was looking around. Two years earlier, while in Montana walking the dog on the beach, I met this woman walking her dog. She used to take my class where I used to teach them and She's setting the Facebook message, saying that her son was working on a new cycling studio and that I should go audition and at the time in 2012. I was like I'm not moving anywhere. I'm good. I'm said 2014 comes and like I need to change. Let me to revisit that conversation, and they reached out. And I researched and I had friends who had the paella Thanh very early on the first thing. I thought I took Gen. Sherman's class, and I said, This is really interesting, but I don't know if I want my classes recorded. Like what did I say something wrong And I don't want my butt in the mirror. Yeah, like those first, But then I look past that and I got some conversations and I got to talk to John Farley. And I really advocated for myself. I saw that there was such a range of teaching styles that Palestine was not trying to create one style of instructor and make like McDonald's like there's one thing. You know what you're getting, and everybody does the same thing. They allowed all of these differ. Voices and all of these different personalities and ways of inspiring because everybody's affected by something different. They allowed all of these different voices to co exist, and I thought, I think there's room for me here..

Oh, man, I was so excited to know that you watch that pel of a film I would love to hear from Leo's out there. To tell me what the most realistic portrayal of their job is because I can't see. Any cop movie. Being as authentic as Jake Gyllenhaal's end of Watch. What Ah, film well, and you know, it's it's I think that the police officers in L a have a little more unique situation and maybe some others, and I think you could really say for for you know, people that have been a part of the LAPD. That probably really paints a picture. Even more so than other police from around the country. I don't know what it's like to be a cop. But I can only imagine that especially in L. A It's very similar to what Jake Gyllenhaal and I don't know the name of the actor who played his partner. He is so good. He's good in everything that he does. I'm a unabashedly Gyllenhaal fan. I love just about everything that he's done. Other than Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain. I don't know that Jake Gyllenhaal has been as good in anything as he was an end of watch. What film Michael pain? Yeah, And he actually does a lot of just lie, stupid comedy stuff and weird stuff. He's had some serious roles, but that might be his most serious role. Yeah, he did. Dow Jones Futures Surge As Pfizer/BioNTech Coronavirus Vaccine Effective

"Stocks are hitting record highs this morning. This follows Pfizer's announcement that has had a big success with a Koven 19 vaccine. The Dow rose more than 1500 points right after the market opened, and the other major indexes are Oppa's. Well, We have NPR's Jim's really with us, Jim. Good morning. Good morning, did it So what do you see Ng and what's driving the market so high? Well, this is really good news for the economy. I mean, it's a potential sea change. You know, the as you know, the pandemic led to a global shutdown in the economy, with lots of businesses closing Lots of millions of people. Tens of millions people laid off really all over the world. The economy just ground to a halt, especially in a travel companies. Airlines cruise ships they were, they were just devastated. If this vaccine proves to be a successful as it appears right now, you know, maybe we will start to see a return to normal at some point, which is why we're seeing stocks just up across the board this morning. What kinds of starts in particular scenes seem to be benefiting. Well, we're seeing airline stocks really surging United was up 25% right after the market opened. Delta was up more than 20% companies like Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Lines, which you know nobody takes crew took cruises. You know, once the lockdowns took effect There they are up. Also, big banks tend to do better when the economy is in good shape. So you're seeing Goldman Sachs and Citigroup up and and also energy companies. Exxon, for instance, they benefit from an economy that's growing. There are much higher this morning. But really all almost all stocks are up across the board. Are there exceptions? Maybe there's some some stocks that might go down if it looks like a pandemic could at some point soon be coming to an end. Yeah, that And this is kind of funny. The ones that air down or not up his much our companies like Netflix and Pel Aton eBay. These are companies that have actually benefited from the locked down, so you know When there's a lock down. People watch a lot of Netflix because they can't go out. So you know they can't go to the gym, so they used Saletan. So if this vaccine is his promising as it looks, people are going to do that as much and so you're seeing. Netflix stock down pellet on eBay is down to I mean, the other thing. Obviously, we saw over the weekend, which was pretty significant news is the election called and Joe Biden gives a victory speech and we're now calling him president elect. It has that had a factor in what we're saying this morning as well. Yeah, I think so. The market really soared last week, and it was up later in the week when it became pretty clear that Biden was going to be the winner the Democrats didn't do as well as they hoped, and and and it looks like the Senate is going to remain in Republican control, depending on the outcome of those to run off elections in Georgia. Unless the den's Democrats convene those races, we're going to be headed for a period of divided government. You know, a Democratic White house in a Republican controlled Senate, and it's kind of conventional wisdom on Wall Street, the market has has usually done pretty well under divided government. And I guess the other big question. I mean, when we've talked about stocks and the markets we've we've talked about a stimulus bill and whether we might see one coming from Congress is do you feel like there's any clarity and we've seen the market's respond? Yeah, there's I think there's a broad consensus among economists that we need another stimulus bill. The economy was really weakened by the by the pandemic. As we said, You know, this vaccine news today is still preliminary, and it could be months before we know what the impact is going to be. So you know, way need. We need a stimulus bill and the hope is President Biden and Congress will be able to get one NPR's Jim's early, Jim. Thanks as always, you're welcome.

Russia says West trying to victimize Moscow over Navalny

"Russia is continuing to deny any suggestions that it was complicity in the poisoning. Last month, the Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny, as pressure mounts for the country to be sanctioned. Mr Navalny is still being treated in a hospital in Germany, where scientists say it's beyond doubt that he was poisoned with the Nova Chuck nerve agent he fellow on an internal flight in Russia. Seafarers driven tensions between Russia and the west to new heights, with some Western governments believing Mr Navalny was poisoned by Russian agents with top level backing the US secretary of state Mike Pompeo has now set a CZ much that there was a substantial chance His poisoning was ordered by senior Russian officials, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Called the accusation unacceptable. So is that also the view of Vitaly Mill enough, a member of Parliament of the United Russia Party, we cannot accept or decline. This statement by Mr Compel, because all the research is that have been made since he left Russia. They've been performed not in the presence ofthe Russian official doctors. Or specialist. So now we can guess the presence ofthe navy. Chuck is in his trousers were somewhere we can't prove this information. Unfortunately, no, we can guess that that the statement off from Pel is just a play with the political games in case they would find appropriate that, uh, appropriate that Navalny should be victim ofthe so called Russian regime. OK, He cannot be this victim even without any poison in his blood because they can write on the paper. Whatever they weren't

CBO: 9.5% Unemployment by the End of 2021

"The Congressional Budget Office weighed in on this corona virus economy today and without putting too terribly fine a point on it. It ain't great news. The deficit is going to explode. We kind of knew that but unemployment. This quarter is going to average fourteen percent and the economy is going to shrink twelve percent April through June. So that is where we are going to start Catherine Rim pels at the Washington Post. He Brady is at politico. Hey you can let me start with you and something else that was in this. Cbo report This line that said We anticipate unemployment in this economy will come down to nine and a half percent by the end of twenty twenty one which is by my calendar like eighteen plus months from now that is astounding it is astounding and those kinds of estimates implying that the duration of this jewel public health crisis economic crisis could last a lot longer than people are anticipating right now suggests to me anyway. That politicians in the media need to be doing a much better job at preparing the public for the fact that that this could last a while and in my view better managed. Expectations could lead to potentially more proactive policies but also potentially better outcomes. You know maybe if we realize we're in this for the long haul we won't be agitating to prematurely engage in economic activities that could actually extended duration of the crisis

"And Lopez covers the New Orleans Pelicans for ESPN Andrew. From the moment. That the Pelicans won the lottery landing the first overall Pick Zion Williamson was almost universally expected to walk in and be the face of the franchise really the face of basketball in the city of New Orleans. What did you think as you're watching the draft? Yes so I'll go back to the lottery with just two weeks. Prior to this the the newspaper I was working for got bought out. I was really in a state of flux personally. And then I remember when that Memphis logo came out of the number to envelop. The second pick will be made by the Memphis Grizzlies number one mic and the two thousand nineteen and it goes to the New Orleans. Pelicans and I realized Oh wait to turn to a buddy of mine who was sitting next to grabbed his arm and I was like Bro. I got a job like somebody. Who's going to hire me for this guy so it all kind of worked out? Because that night I I kind of started started the ball rolling with ESPN and ESPN hired me in August two covers ion and and do all this. It really change a lot in the city. I mean in the city itself. What the day after the they like three thousand or thirty five hundred season ticket packages? It was it was insane. You saw people walking around. It was June and July in New Orleans and you saw people walking around in Pelicans gear. That's saints time that we don't we don't do that down here. Really has changed a lot for Zion. Well not covering him on the court. He's practicing. He's been injured all year. What's his outlook like? Today is actually a very big day for Zaylon because the PELICANS still want to get him a a lot of five on five work. That's a big step in his recovery right now. The problem with that has been. They haven't had a lot of practice time to get there once. He was cleared the five on five work last week. He did it but then the pels had a stretch of five games in eight days where they didn't really get much practice time. You don't get a lot of practice time on the road so today's actually a big day where he's going to get a chance to get back out there and get some five on five work done. We don't know if it's going to be one more if it's going to be two. Who More practices? But we're we're getting close to the end game now. We don't have a date circled but we're getting close to win you. Know he'll finally make his his regular season debut debut. How many times have you said endgame since this is all begun a lot? Maybe we can get this checked out and they thought it was just a regular routine gene thing they go get the MRI done and they're like. Oh we have an issue here. There was no swelling. He didn't really feel that much pain. It was more like something doesn't feel right in the knee and that's how it kind of started. He was clean when they got him in. preseason they think it happened in preseason. It's also not anything anything that goes back to his time at Duke. There's no lingering things there or or in some and they think it happened in the preseason. They just don't know exactly when so so the news comes out. Everybody's a little bit confused. What happens next before they go to that? Last preseason game in New York the the knicks the PELICANS announce hey he's outright knee soreness and it takes a couple of days before we figure out what is exactly going on and in part of the reason for that was they wanted to get different opinions from different doctors. It took a weekend and then they announce. Hey Hey he's having surgery. He had the surgery this morning. Everything is good. We're looking at a six to eight week

Will an impeachment inquiry impact US-China trade talks, stocks or the economy?

"Impeachment. Of course we will give that a nod but we do business and economics. You know so. Let's get to it. Catherine pels at the Washington Post City Brady is at politico everybody all right. Catherine you get at first bite at the apple and it goes like this. My operating premise here is that Washington and Capitol Hill and Congress were already stuck. There was no major federal legislation moving so what is the economic big deal of impeachment I think that there are a few ways at this could play out that could affect the economy one of choruses that we have these trade negotiations looming with China as well as with other economies and there were presumably a number of reasons why China for example might have been wary about making a deal with this administration having seen how previous dealmaking has been handled trump threatening tariff on Mexico for example after a new Nafta was signed but now if they're worried about whether this guy is even going to stick around you could imagine that makes it even harder to convince them to come to the table and beyond that you could also imagine that trump might decide to do more drastic stuff you know. He wants to look tough He's reportedly threatening some sort of capital controls on investment in well. I guess we'll get to that but you could imagine that that it just there are additional wildcards that could be thrown into the mix as well as even greater uncertainty about whether we'll ever get get to yes on any of these trade deals. Should you take the flip side of that for me would Ya and it goes like this. The president now in some political trouble because of impeachment wants to do what he can in his election campaign and thus strives to make a deal with China. Yeah A. B. would be wonderful to bring a sense of of clarity to all of this with with with normal logic but that's not really how these things work. We've lurched from week to week with totally different storylines in the world around around us the the conventional wisdom is impeachment is GonNa take three to six months consume everything else and the president who obviously has some some and challenges staying focused is going to be focused on on the noise and the political drama because that's part of what got him into this mess with Ukraine as a political drama around Joe Joe Biden the alternative though is that other things happen in the world other things happen with Iran with the stock market with with the other risks to the presidency and the president is going to to try to find some way to look strong and so the the key tall of this to the key to being a good negotiator the key to the art of the deal. If you will strengthen he's GonNa look. He's GonNa have to find some way to look strong in the face of weakness Kness with all the chatter of impeachment around him. I see what you did there. Okay so Catherine on that topic of of looking strong you alluded to at the president now being reported by Bloomberg. I saw this morning. is is talking about some kind of capital controls on investment in China and also perhaps limiting Chinese access to the American stock markets that is could be if through a big deal. That is a very big deal. I mean these are the kinds of actions that we normally associated with developing countries to be clear as well as some other things that this administration has done. You know all protectionist policy industrial policy so in that sense. I guess it's not entirely out of character but look this is a very bizarre line of attack. It's not exactly clear how this is going to pressure China to do anything whatever it is that the trump administration wants China Chinese population has a lot of savings that they can themselves invest and beyond that you know it could put at risk the dollar supremacy if in fact it looks like there are no restrictions on your ability to get money out of the US and and and where you can invest your dollars so it's a peculiar tack. We don't really really know where they're headed if they're headed in this direction but there are a number of reasons to be suspicious about whether this would be a wise strategy for any the at the administration's objectives are layer all of that with this which is the macroeconomic reality which is that the global economy is slowing. We learned this week that gross domestic. Mr Product in this country is lower than we thought. Consumer spending is slowing. It was all not very promising. It is not very promising you have the combination combination of factors that fall into the big bucket called uncertainty. The very idea of uncertainty is hard to pin down its business uncertainty. It's consumer uncertainty. It's trade uncertainty. you don't ever really know what precisely is causing it but you have a lot of people looking at this picture and thinking is this where I really want to step in and make make my bets and take a risk and that is all against the backdrop of a rising risk of recession and all of that comes together to get people people to to close up and get a little scared and fear of some trigger that that tends to lead to bad outcomes. I don't think I've actually done this with you too. I do with with the some of the other folks who come on on Fridays but Katherine you get to go. I give me a quick gut. Gut Check on the economy. How you feeling you know. We have a lot of mixed signals right now so it's I. I don't think the sky's falling. I think that there are a number of things to be nervous about including the decline in business investment including worries from consumers who have been the edge engine of this economy recently so they're number thanks to be worried about but. I don't think we're about to go off a cliff. If in fact the administration could could get its ducks in a row and remove some of this uncertainty reduce reduce this trade uncertainty in particular. I I would be much more optimistic very big if they could do deep fifteen seconds same question in the last decade we've seen so many scares remember remember one around twenty eleven twenty twelve another one around twenty four to twenty sixteen and you know we got through those we we might have thought it's all going to fall apart now. We got through though so do you have to be cautious if you're a pessimist moment but there aren't a whole lot of reasons for extreme optimism in this moment either and that I should be a a concern and a caution for the optimists as well and Kinda lead you to a shrug Emoji at the end I it's it's a it's a cautious moment that we're crawling through. I'm shrugging right now. City Brady politico. He's in Washington and Catherine Bell to Washington Post. She is in New York. Thanks you too.

U.S. economic growth slowed as consumer rebound was offset by rising trade gap

"In Los Angeles resulted his Friday. The twenty six of Geragos always have along. Everybody's so so much to talk about this week so little time so in we dig Catherine pels at the Washington Post. K. Davidson is at the Wall Street Journal. Hey everybody hey Kaiga so catherine. Let me start with you and I suppose reverse chronological as the way we're going to do this <hes> the G._D._p.. Report this morning two point one percents <hes> Nice you know solid ish but basically all consumers right yeah. Consumers are running a show here <hes> which is a little bit unfortunate particularly since the mechanism by which these tax cuts that we got and laying seventeen were supposed to supercharge the economy was through <hes> incentivizing greater business investment and in fact business investment fell in the second quarter of this year which suggests rests either some cop well. Some combination of the tax cuts aren't doing what we were told they would do and or if they are having an effect. It's being canceled out by whatever uncertainty businesses are feeling due to trade policy so to those businesses <hes> Okay Davidson <hes>. What are they doing with their money? I mean granted. There is trade policy uncertainty but they had a while where taxes were in their favor and yet here we are. That's right guy I mean I think you've talked a lot about it. We've heard a lot about this idea of share buybacks <hes> <hes> that's really the main thing that we've seen last year. Companies set a record for share buybacks <hes> that dipped a little bit at the beginning of this year but it's still very robust <hes> there is some business investment <hes> as Catherine pointed out at it fell in the second quarter order <hes> but there has been some we saw a bunch of last year but <hes> I I do think that it's becoming more and more clear as the months of its trade disputes go on that companies are they're holding off there waiting to see how these trade disputes. We're going to shake out and I think that the longer drags on <hes> where we don't know what's going to happen with China. We don't know if the president's going to announce some new kinds of tariffs as he did with Mexico early this year <hes> we we hadn't anticipated <hes> companies are are going to I think beholding back on new investments so here we are now Catherine <hes> the president has talked <hes> long and hard as have all his advisors about <hes> three percent economic growth Howard definitely going to get it and that'll take care of everything and it's going to be fine and now here we are oh by the way at two point one percent which is firmly in the Obama growth profile after a huge recession yes and look the numbers can be noisy quartered a quarter so it's not like we should complete stock in one <hes> quarters numbers but the numbers from last year are now below three percent which was again this target that was supposed to be this magic number that trump was going to deliver not only a one year but in perpetuity something along those lines and we haven't seen that happen and what's disturbing of course is that a lot of economists expected that the the biggest bang for your buck that we would get from the tax cuts might be in the first year <hes> because there was this you know sudden rush of of newly available capital etc and if even that first year we couldn't meet that magical number of three percent which for some reason we have decided <hes> is the goal or or the promise at the very least what happens going forward you know the the the issue. Oh is that the United States economy faces these much longer term structural problems particularly demographic problems that you know just a a simple sugar high of a fiscal stimulus which is ultimately what we got through the tax cut and through spending increases cannot cannot solve all right so kate. Let's turn to the long-term picture here and I WanNa talk about something you wrote about this week. The debt deficit there was of course the budget deal. It's going to add more money to the deficit over the next couple of years. It does seem first of all that nobody in Washington. <hes> whether they are hawks are dubs on the deficit no matter what they say they just don't vote in a way that would make you think they care about how much money we oh. I think that's right guy. That's something that we've seen for a couple of years now. <hes> I we we had the <hes> the giant tax cut which of course is expected to add about a trillion dollars to deficits over a decade then shortly after that there was a very large budget deal last year <hes> <hes> nearly three hundred billion dollars above spending levels that were set in these earlier. We are spending caps that were negotiated. Remember the tea party wave and everyone was concerned about deficits two thousand eleven <hes> basically we've just reach these Congress's released two year agreements every couple years since then to lift spending now <hes> I'm with this latest deal fiscal hawks who were outside of Congress looking in or saying. What are you guys doing? You're basically <hes> you know. Trillion dollar deficits are now enshrined in the law they become permanent and oh by the way in a couple of years those spending caps that everyone worked toward back in two thousand eleven going to expire so there's really nothing that's going to be <hes>. No sort of automatic cuts that are holding things down on the flip side folks who are supporting <hes> you know supporting these deals are saying discretionary spending on nondefense programs things like health and education and infrastructure is his historical lows <hes> and it's really if you look at the numbers it's basically level <hes> where it was in two thousand eleven there haven't in in reality been been these actual increases says so <hes> in furthermore they're pointing to the fact that yields borrowing costs are still extremely low. So why should they worry about deficits right now. So it's an interesting argument that's happening in getting some backup from economists mainstream economists to who are coming around this this idea that we might not have to worry so much about deficits if the economy keeps growing <hes> so I think you're right. There's very little incentive for politicians to to vote that way. I'm also voters. Don't seem to care that much either so it's kind kind of perfect storm for our deficit hawks. There's always that Catherine. Let me wrap it up with you. In the last thirty seconds left the reason the growth matters that the trump administration has been promising is not only was that going to pay for the tax cuts which by the way it was never gonNa work but also <hes> debt debt becomes more of an issue the slower year economy grows right that we were going to grow our way out of not only the deficits that the tax cuts created for us but the all of the debt that we have accumulated remember at one point trump even promise. Imus that he was GONNA pay down all of our debt <hes> and if in fact we have to be more realistic about what our growth trajectory is going to be. It's going to be something more like two percent growth or maybe just a little bit below that then maybe we we need to rethink all of these other ancillary <hes> policy problems that we have including what that means for debt-to-gdp levels and deficit to G._D._p.. Levels Catherine Pell at the Washington Post Gay Davidson at the Wall Street Journal. Thanks you too. Thanks guy.

One Month After Australia's Un-Losable Election: Dissecting What Happened

"It's been a month since the federal election and the live apart. And the commentaries they remained in a state of disbelief and despair. This was, we will told the unlivable election. So just how did the pundits get my so badly? Roan is it fair to just blind? The polls will the coalition scare campaign as if scape campaigns never happened in politics. What do you think was this election reminder that many commentators, especially in the camera? Chris gallery. They really do. Leave in a bubble. Well, one veteran columnist consistently believed that the coalition had a pathway to victory and he's my guest today. Jared Henderson, now you've no doubt seen him as a regular guest on the inside, as you can read these call them every Saturday in the Weekend Australian, and he publishes a Wally read blog called media watch dog. Now, jeff. Rod is one of the leading historians of the liberal party. He's books include Menzies child, liberal party of Australia and Santa Maria. A most unusual man as published by immu p the Papp's Jared's. Mine work is executive director of the Sydney institute. Jared, it's great to have you on between the lines. Thanks for the invitation to them. Now, what are the punditry get the election so badly? Wrong, what I think you've got to look at brief contemporary history here. We know that the polls go to wrong with Trump's victory. The polls got it wrong with bricks and the penetration Australia should have been aware that Paul's aunt, who is reliable. But in a in a sense, I think must of the commentators in most of the journalist wanted the coalition defeated, and there was a sort of projection onto the electric of their own views. They didn't believe that the coalition was worthy of government. They didn't believe modem timbale should have been overthrown. They wanted the. Coalition replaced, and I think they projected onto the electric debuts day held without checking out what the views the electric hill, and I think biolog-, many of them are out of touch some common title is on the lift such as professor Judith Brit, from Latrobe university shoot. She took to the cover story in the monthly magazine leading up to the my I election. And she said that this was the headline laced self interest groups, the liberal party has little lift, but appeals to the hypocrisy on her lawn was that the liberals must be hoping that enough of it supporters. These are woods hours, morally bankrupt as it has become happy to try the planets, and they children's future for pocketful of Silva. Judas breath is very often wrong on these matters. It's twenty five years ago. She predicted the end of the liberal party that didn't work out too well, and then I saw her piece in the monthly, but it's rather superficial. Peace and innocent Sasol fractious pace because what she's saying is that Australian shouldn't be primarily consumer their economic interests. Now, I always sought before the campaign during the campaign that essentially Australians would those on their economic interest, because that was the only thing that can really determine about others thought that they should vote on perceptions of climate change who perceptions about the liberal party. But that's not how have worked in the past and, and make sense. If, if you'll someone on on modest to listen, modest means you're gonna look look after self. And, and I think it's wise that you do that. It's not simply self. It's also you family. I think there was a tendency of many of the commentariat heated look down on other astray ins they thought privately I thought they wouldn't express it they thought they went as. Well educated today with I wanted us in a sense that as morals with wanting, the real big issues. I mean in, in a meeting, I did very few discussions before the vixen vetted, one, one business Madiun, David Maron, Jennifer Hewett, and David Meyer. Showed me, the whole election was going to be decided on climate change and suggested David that he might drive out to the suburbs. So into some of the regional towns to find out what people really talking about about. He didn't do this and I didn't finish to the MAs of the will that they, they are get out clause now is that, well that would just following the polls and the polls consistently said that the coalition would not win the election and raises the question. And we saw the same phenomenon happen both with Brexit and Trump. And we've talked about the shy Trump factor that people feed and meeting, I'd vote for the Republican nomination, because he was socially unacceptable during the twenty sixteen Brexit referendum Paul's pointed to remind. Find victory millions of. Scheib residencies unite crypt into the Pauling booze. I voted leave you'll saying the same phenomenon heath. Well, we are saying the same here, but there's another factor. It's wrong to blame the Pels in in this insulin, usually, the Pels arrived, this time, the weren't right? But in any event, the magin was fifty one and a half to forty eight and a half. And that's still within the magic mirror. So very unwise for any journalist to say, well, look, the coalition's behind by that, much, of course, look at ninety ninety three when Paul Keating won a come from behind election victory Johnson. That was a classic wasn't it. Well, it was in 'cause pull ditties victory speech out in the western suburbs. And he come into the second eleven of journalists being sent. All the I live in was hanging around waiting for Joan his victory speech, which he, which he never delivered. So in a column, I did the Australian before in the period of the election said, Labour's, he went from a position on three occasions, not seventy two with Gulf with him. He was not a popular figure, but a huge figure then with Bob Hawke, who was both very popular figure, and a huge figure. And with Kevin rod who wasn't a huge figure, but a very popular figure. Now, when you look at it that way, Bill, shorten wasn't at that level. And then there was this fixation among sections of the press. Go raise it, the review among sections, the prescription some other commentators, that's okay for the liberal party to have a later who might win provided his name, Malcolm Turnbull, preps. Julie bishop. They didn't believe that the term should have been replaced, and therefore, they didn't believe that Morrison could win because they predicted they've you of turn belong to the electorate. But the electric didn't have that view of timber all guest is Jared Hinson is a columnist with the. Australia now on election, not the vanquish Tony Abbott. He talked about a political realignment in this country. Let's heave from the former prime minister. There is something of a rail lineman poets going on rolling around this country. It's clear that in what might be described as working seats. We are doing so much better. It's also clear in, at least some of what described as wealthy Sates way undoing it tough. And the Green Left is doing better. They will be gripe deal of analysis of the pot that climate China deal did not ply in the ring outcome. And let me just say these says, my first word if not necessarily my last word on this subject. Climate change is
