What to know about COVID-19 variants' potential spread, impact on vaccines

"And I'm No well, King. Good morning. Ah, virus that spreads a lot has many chances to mutate and covert 19 is doing both in this country. Researchers in the U. S now say they have found at least seven new variants here now. Other countries, the U. K South Africa and Brazil. They've all reported variants to with some big questions like Are they more dangerous? Still outstanding. MPR's health correspondent Rob Stein has been following This one. Hi, Rob. Good morning. Well, what have you learned about the U. S variance? So the first of these various was spotted by researchers in Louisiana. But it turns out the same kind of mutation looks like it also emerged completely independently at least seven times in this country. No, That's it awful large because it suggests the virus is doing something called convergent evolution. That's when an organism evolved in a way that gives them some kind of superior power. Here's what Jeremy Camille of Louisiana State University says about what the virus is doing. He spotted the mutation. It's infected millions of humans around the world now and it's probably just, you know, getting Into a more intimate relationship with our species. The question is, What is that more intimate relationship mean? Exactly Does it make it spread more easily from one person to another doesn't make it more contagious. Do do. Researchers know the answers to that? Yeah, well, no one knows yet it looks like it's spreading quickly in the places where it's been spotted, but it's not at all clear. That's because of the mutation. No viruses mutate all the time. Sometimes there are big problems, but a lot of times not so much, and there are other mutants that had been previously spotted in this country. Like you know, one that took over in Southern California Scientists are still trying to figure out whether it's more contagious or, you know, just got lucky. Now this newly identified mutation occurred on a key protein that sticks out from the surface of the virus called the spike Protein. It's how the virus infects cells. That's also the target of drugs and vaccines. So any change could be really important. I talked about this with Andrew Peco Shit. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. We should keep an eye on it. I myself have already passed this on to the people in my laboratory, and we're looking to see if we can find viruses with this mutation because if we can, we're going to bring it into the laboratory and try to study it to see what's actually happening here. Now, you know to be clear. Pecos means he passed on the details about the new various Those colleagues Yes, so they can determine you know whether they're more contagious or not Now, no one thinks there's any reason to panic. You know, far from it, actually. And we already know that there are those other various circulating in this country that we know we should be worried about. And what about the non US variants, some of which were identified before ours. How are they evolve? It Yes. So you know, more than 1100 cases of the one first flag in the UK have been confirmed. At least 40 states and British scientists just released more data than makes them even more worried than ever that, in addition to spreading faster, it may also make people sicker. You know, and the first one spotted in South Africa has not been detected in at least eight states and the one originally seen in Brazil is in at least two states. But the reality is they're probably already way more common than that. The U. S just isn't sequencing the genetic code of the virus enough to really know how widespread they are. And the spot any new variants fast. I talked about this with saucy of pop sq at George Mason University. We're flying blind right now, when it comes to mutations, and how prevalent they might be on the community already, so we really need to ramp it up. The CDC says. It's trying to wrap it up. But the country still has a ways to go. And what about the vaccines that we currently have? Will they help against the new variants? Yes. So the vaccines maybe someone that's effective against some of these various, but so far they seem to work pretty well. But the most important thing is to keep these viruses from spreading as much as we can to prevent any more dangerous ones from occurring. You know, the virus is still spreading like crazy in this country, which makes the U. S essentially a giant Petri dish that could easily produce even

"Are developing at the time <hes> and does it very very quickly quickly so within half a minute it can give you a full scale of tight-race ins across a fairly broad spectrum and it's doing it in a very precise <hes> method when it was first announced back in in. Twenty Eleven <hes> they were talking about precision of around Twenty Pico leaders. Now peco is smaller than Nanno okay so a Nanno leader would be one billionth of a leader Pika leader is one one trillionth of a leader so when it was announced it was at a precision of Twenty Pika leaders now it is according to H._p.'s website on the subject. They've gotten it down to about thirteen Pika leaders so it's even even more precise now and it can do titrate ocean of between Thirteen Pika leaders up to ten micro liters in a micro leader is one millionth of a leader just think if we were trying to advance <hes> burrito technology how much inch more precise we get if we were going with more than just a pico to guy. Oh Oh I was a long way for that job. I was just waiting and waiting and like saw anyway so yeah the that that hurt the one of the this doesn't really look I would advise you if you're really interested in this state to take a look at this. They do have videos of this process going on. It doesn't look like what we think of as a desktop inkjet printer <hes> it's it's at these trays that uses are actually disposable to yes very important because you don't want any residue no no <hes> and it's it's Kinda cool because it's a very small tray and they dropped the trae into the printer and then they can add the the chemicals that they're using for the study whichever study they're working on <hes> as they go so <hes> it's it's really Kinda cool because they're not using the same print had that they would if they were say printing out <hes> their dissertations brighter brighter studies on paper and the kind of cool to watch because it's you can see it spray onto the paper using these trays right and it can also print into little like <hes> grids of containers in other words you're you're you're printing out the right compound that you've created into little containers so that then you can test each container and see what what affects that particular <hes> mixture will have and whether or not you know one in is better than another and which one you should really focus on this really streamlines <hes> the development of of <hes> pharmaceuticals and you know we're talking. Pharmaceuticals of course is a multibillion dollar industry. Oh yes and in theory by streamlining the process you could bring the cost of developing drugs down that again in theory could eventually pass on down the line so that those individual drugs are not as expensive as earlier drugs that took longer to develop right now of course that's all based upon the cost of production. It's not necessarily based upon the actual corporate behavior of pharmaceutical company which I cannot really talk about because it doesn't have anything to do with technology well that has to do with the economy as yeah as a corporate by that has responsibility aces shareholders its point is to maximize profits while doing it's business right but theoretically this this should also help them too because they could probably deliver medicines more effectively and cheaply and still increase its bottom line in the process process also would speed up development of new medications <hes> but there are also other benefits people have talked about the possibility that <hes> you know we've we've talked about sub dermal <hes> we haven't on this podcast but you know people in general have been discussing how the medical medical patches work <hes> the drug delivery patches that you put on your skin for different kinds of medications. <hes> there been discussions that H._p...

Oh, you're lucky man that the birds aren't taking those I, I know very lucky. But getting there getting there another couple of days early. Okay. Unsteady waiting till they're ripe, so, okay. "So you know, it comes with a remote. It's a little tiny PICO remote, which is exactly the same size as one of those switches, right? So let's say you have a three way switch where you have like a staircase. You have a switch at the bottom Switzer the top. Right. And you think well, how do I get that into the technology? So that I could operate from my Africans and the lights come on or off at night. But I don't wanna have to do all of this major wiring. You don't have to because what happens is that peco remote fits behind a normal. Switch plate, and it kind of fakes out the visually. It looks like a switch. Right. It's really just a remote control is battery operated. So it gives you a switch at the top of the Sierra and the bottom is there. But you're only wearing one. Not too. Yeah. So it's kinda cool trick of the trade. It's all possible. Now was smart lighting, right? We can do so interesting trick to do because you would think that was impossible before with any of these sort of smart lighting technology. Just because there's so many different ways to use that switch that gets worth ninety nine ninety five's going out to one caller drawn at random make that you the number again is one eight eight eight money pit well pantry or maybe a set of cabins that are stuck in a constant state of disarray. I know that my cabinets have concentrated disarray for about the last twenty years we've had kids with house. That's what the junk drawers four-time kid. Designated drawer that you can leave a total mess. Well, we kid, but we've got easy ways to help clear that color with some pantry designs that can give you spacious and orderly food storage in the first place to start is very simple, but effective tip. And that is keep a grocery list on or near the pantry door making a family rule that whenever someone notices something's almost gone. They must add it to the list. Oh, that is wonderful in theory. If only I could get my children just simply go along with that rule, then I would not end up in a chocolate chip, cookie situation. Here's a great trick of the trade. Get one of those over the door shoe sort of pocket storage things, you know, it's clear pockets, and you can use them for a ton of things not just shoes. And here's a great place that you can use that as well. You can cut it to fit the backside of your cabinet door, and then don't overstep those pockets, but you can put those small things in there and still be able to close the cabinet door. I mean, you should be utilizing every space and that includes the back of the door. Yup. Absolutely. Now, the other thing that you can do is to group things together. According to how they're going to be used. So for example, is that of keeping all the herbs and spices together? You wanna put the sweet spices with the other baking supplies us. Maybe a small basket hold. All your all. Spices cinnamon, close your ginger Mace nutmeg and stuff like that. And this way the next time you're making an apple pie or gingerbread. You could just grab a whole basket. And they'll you've got every spice you need. And it just put it back when you're done. And here's another good rule to use. When you're organizing the pantry the less often that you use. Something the harder it should be to reach. So you wanna see the prime pantry real estate for things that you're grabbing for every single day? And then, you know, make it a little bit more.

And I mentioned to you before, then I'm like, oh, man have been hard to get in touch with now. I know he's not your partnership which. That means and you also him a threesome rampage. And he's coming to collect, I need to work on that over under. October first two thousand nineteen. Yeah, that's the line, right? Yep. Arron peco's champion. Boy. At the rate he's going now there's not much between him in a title shot. So I'm gonna say under, I'm gonna say it happens before year, right? I mean, I how many more rungs you have to climb to get to the title. It's not many. There's not a whole lot of room between Leandro. You go and I'm wise. He hasn't been in the game for a long time, but men there. There's not enough real estate for him to make a slow climb to the title..

"Out peco's progress or will every once in a while updated for you. Yeah, just what I think is happening. He's swimming around because that's what sharks do. So, I mean, it's true. It's what they do, what they do, you know now they don't. I guess they don't normally travel forty one hundred miles from home, which he also did so that that part was. They called it unprecedented. Never happened. We'll maybe it happens all the time with the sharks. You haven't tagged. Shirks get tagged every year, be that many right? Can it. They don't tag every shark in the c- peco's got issues though. I think it's safe to say he at least has issues and that he can fly. Let's not forget or gloss over that he hits to ride. We don't know. It could have been some truck son hitchhiking on the side of the road, putting his fin out and guy stops, throws him in the back of the truck and takes him to the coast, the other coast where you go and you headed Shuki enough. These ghost. All right. I'll drop you at the landing. I'm heading that way. So we took him from the Gulf to the Atlantic hung up on? No, I'm hung up on you saying stuck his fin out. There's no thumb involved. So it's got to be the thin. Well said, thank you triple eight, nine hundred thirty three ninety. Three also. What? What is the x. hillside come on, man, you're on another bizarre animal kick here with good animal videos on the internet that are fun and funny, and I wanna share them with the audience, what's wrong with miss. Lou steals what she's a bet dog and she goes, you minor league team in Greensboro, North Carolina, believing she when the bat hits the ground, she's trained to go retrieve it and bring it back to the dugout. So it's okay. So it's like a bad boy dog or bet girl, I guess dogs and that kid whoever does the job. So miss Lou Gehrig is the name of the dog. Isn't that. Oh, man. That's a horrible. All right. "So you're going to grow up conservative than combined with, you know, family ties in Reagan was like, I didn't think anything was wrong with being right wing, and then I go to Phoenix. Obviously, I chose a place where you can can shoot my neighbor. He looks to me the wrong. You done that in just go put on. I'm not admitting to the top. Now now peco because I hate a guy who listened right wing, really a bizarre turn. I mean, Donald is not the right wing that I want right, win v and it's it's disheartening 'cause it's not fun to talk about politics. It's so unproductive. So I always hate myself when I do it because I really don't know much about politics. I just know how I feel about things in it feels like we're being conned in arguing with people when there's no argument to be had. We're being con- he doesn't care. He's not. He's very negligent person doesn't matter how smart or not smart as he's negligent. Let's businesses in his buildings and everything's about one thing. And that's, that's my only argument is like. It's the one job in the world. We don't want someone to be completely negligent. So that's my only argument. And anything else is just mean not liking him personally, use open target for that, but it's not not proud of myself have to make fun of the president. I mean, my career essentially took off when I when I saw the the power, the the niche communities that did she could have when it comes to social media. Right? I don't care what life form was in in to some degree into significant grease that same with you. So when you look at, are you happy with how socials evolved or do you think it's all people for the most part novels are there's a significant number of assholes would like to hear their voice sinner pretty loud, you think Tim burners Lee looks back and goes on damn it. I don't know. I love it. I wouldn't be where I am without it complain about it too. You know about community stocked, which is very proud of our ability to grow. Oh, with the in have are sick. It's about rules, right? Wing sector has some house rules kind of been than a few words the same since the day. One. Phil Pearlman I in Shaw mcglaughlin in Justin paternal, we descend down. So, hey, how do we want people to behave? What are we willing to kick people off? It's not that hard to do. No, you can. If you really got finding, we'll let you be me if you're not really funny, you're going to get kicked off because just we can't you gotta it's like velociraptor drastic park at some point. Crazy people in the animals are gonna get through the fence because smart, they figure it out in if you let them stay on the side of the fence for too long, it's over in community is about, you know, setting rules in can't have a set of rules for on people in the set for the other because just brakes things down. I think Twitter's stronger than ever because the products kind of just stayed the same. You know, people yelling at the block features, one. The great features of all time, thunder valley block in mute. Are, you know that's why Twitter worth thirty billion. Twenty billion, whatever. It's worth those two features in soon anonymous network. A really powerful. Unfortunately, people don't how to use them well enough. So you get great. You know it's dangerous. But I think that you know a constitution around how people behave is important, whether it's a small neighborhood or a large neighborhood. I think that the number one thing I'm proud about stock with his to grow to our size and still have really interesting discussions on the markets up and down and keep the penny stocks at bay, push people away that don't be belong. We still keep our integrity around, hey, if you like talking about stocks and talking about him all day, long stocked with us for you in kind of Fred came up with that Fred Wilson team up with loan in. It's like, I hated that idea at first. Now, Ian are CEO his inherited it leased the community, the that just knows the constitution of stock switches. Thanks for listening. "The reason we're talking about school sara gatien is because linda brown just passed away earlier this week and it seems like this reality that she and her father fought for in brown versus board of education for everything you're saying it never actually came to be in the days since linda brown died as ban a lot written about her she's been on the news again we have brought up again this woman who most of us haven't talked about in decades and we report on her as if her life stop once the supreme court ruled in brown you know but linda brown grew up she had her own children and she had her own children she was still living into pika and she was still battling school segregation it was no longer school segregation required by law but it looked just like the school segregation in nineteen fifty three and check she reopens brown and she argues that peco's not complying black kids are still attending segregated schools and she wins when you say that she reopened brown to meet she literally sued again as her father suit on her bath she did for her children yes her father was a plaintiff for her and she became the plaintiff for her own children you know to be at that point head required segregation at schools for twenty five years despite that she was able to prove that the segregation they're still unconstitutional that's what we need to talk about because that's the type of segregation the black children continue to face and one i think that we have largely accepted.
