She's Baking Incredible Pies And Changing The World

"During this women's history month we've been highlighting amazing women owned businesses and the incredible women behind them today. We'd like to introduce you to justice of the pies. And its founder. Maya camille broussard. Celebrities like carrie. Washington and the obamas have bought pies from maya forbes even featured her bourbon pecan pie as one of the best order for thanksgiving. If my only goal was to make great pies that would be enough but the title of her bakery. Justice of the pies tells you that her business does so much more in fact like so. Many women owned businesses justice up. The pies has purpose at the center of its strategy. In her case it's a transform the lives of people in her chicago community. We talked to my about her mission with justice up the pies. Here's what she had to say. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you for happening. So justice at the pies is nationally famous for its incredible pies but you also have a social mission tells about that. Sure suggest is is is an l. Three seat what this means is we are social mission based company and our goal is a positive impact. The lives of will work with us. We consider ourselves to be stores for fairness and equality. So what inspired you to do this. So i actually created the bakery in two thousand and fourteen in memory of me. Authors the bussard. My dad was a criminal defense attorney in his robbie was making is in issues but as an attorney he could have very well it shows to go to any other specialty infield that is more lucrative such as contract law maybe even as a divorce attorney something where he could have made a a largest atler he but he really decided to a criminal defense attorney because he wanted to be able to help people who go up in the same of maitland. His that he grew up in a daegu up in a projects on the west side of chicago in office saw out the criminal. Justice system could sometimes be a little bit Unbalanced when it came to people of color when it came to men so he was very passionate about making sure that people had their fair chance in a fair day in court in that he be there to represent them. Now the issue is it didn't always pay as much you know. We had some financial difficulties when i was gone up as a kid when he was willing to be passionate about using his knowledge in his position to help others. In so justice at the pie not only celebrates his love pies the also honest belief that people deserve second chances so you achieve your mission by question. We went to be used wherever we see. You know. I want to have the flexibility to take up causes that i feel that i can contribute to that amenable to us. So one of our standing initiatives is doing are fighting food insecurities so we activate a workshop. i need love like kneading dough. I need love. Were shot in the workshop. The buys kids who with either lower incomes communities with culinary instruction and nutritional development and teaching them about creativity in the kitchen. The kids are in eight grade in. They are at that point in their lives when they could become a little bit more self sufficient in beating themselves the kiss live in neighborhoods that are typically affected by food apartheid. So that means that there is a fresh grocery store within two of where they live or they've never been to restore before so as part of the workshop. We will take the kids to grocery stores and give them a dollar gift certificate to buy ingredients that will be using in the class but to also teach them about budgeting this is all about. How do we embrace this life skill. How do we cultivate this slice. Feel that is needed in order to be more successful in other areas to be more successful in school so that you could be more successful in life you may be eating food but it's not the healthiest food. It could just be. You know have takis an pop band honey. Bahn's from the corner store or from the data is not something that can really sustain you and keep your energy up throughout the day especially when you're in class in. You're supposed to be very alert in ready to learn.

The Power of the Praline

"Let's get to question let us for all liens are pralines or pauline's or lines. This is the first question what are they. Oh heck well a as it turns out the word of prowling can refer to a number of types of candies. What the word means in the american south is a soft fudgy type of carmel. Lumped with pieces of pecan and like a melt in your mouth super sweet rich buttery creamy confection with the contrasting crunch and complementary sweet buttery flavor cons so good. Oh my heck it's typically made by cooking a sugar with butter milk or cream or condensed milk. Maybe a little bit of annella and then at chapter have cons. An easter this constantly until it is a thick syrup softball stage for y'all candy makers and then you pour the the mass out onto a tray or a slab cool either in a single sheet to be broken into pieces later or in individual mounds sort of the the size and shape of a cookies when they're done they're dry the touch not sticky until they start to melt which they can like skin temperature You can get variations in there that include like rum for flavoring chocolate pralines peanut butter pralines chewier caramel praline. Pralines encased in hard chocolate sometimes called turtles cetera You can make them with other nuts too. I guess that is something. I've never seen but researching this episode. I have learned. That is definitely a thing. Yeah yeah okay. So in europe we run into some kind of serious linguistic confusion. Because in france from what i understand the word Prowling means whole almonds or other nuts that are cooked in boiling sugar then cooled so that it creates like granulated coding that keeps the almond inside fresh and i think it can also mean That confection crushed into a powder for use in like other candy making or baking. Or what have you here in the states we do call nuts that have been encased in a crunchy dairy sugar coating praline nuts and praline. Pecans are a holiday delicacy in the south. Yes meanwhile back in france. There's a related term of a means groundnuts or possibly praline knots cooked into a soft paste with sugar and chocolate and then coated in a hard chocolate. Shell like a like a bon. Bon yelm right. Meanwhile in belgium the word probably means any confection consisting of a hard chocolate shell encasing a softer filling one of the traditional fillings or perhaps traditional filling being prawning. Y'all it takes me like a really silly amount of time to suss all of this out i. It was like cross-referencing i. There was a lot of translating pages from french with google translate blake. I got very confused for a very hot minutes. Yeah that's one of the funny things about when you do grow up in an area and you don't realize something as regional venture outside of it and you're like wait you call leads. What and way for us. 'cause you just kind of assume the word means this turn out not necessarily yeah Yes so so. That's fun when you're googling it is it is it adds an extra layer of challenge of fun difficulty. A wrinkle an air history perhaps mystery what brolly are really great. Are we talking about well lauren. What about the nutrition. Well there. they're treat. It's you know it's sugar in nuts and fat it treats are nice. Tweets are great Not circling tristesse would imagine. I did find I guess this is a good transition into numbers portion. Because there aren't any numbers on pralines. But i did find one. That really cracked me up. And it was hyper specific to how many germans or eating pralines and how many were having more than one a day. And i just loved that this exists and is obviously not a well. Maybe not obviously but not the feeling we're talking about so i didn't include it but it was very funny to me that like only twenty percent of germans have proud leans more than once a day like a lot to me still. I'm just paraphrasing. Don't don't quote me on that but it was okay. Gave me a chuckle. that study did. Yeah yeah i Right right sussing out the numbers for for what. We are focusing on in this episode. Which is the american. South's version of that. Melty kind of fudge. Like pecan praline situation. Sussing that out from everything else was was was tough numbers size but i will say that at shops in new orleans that still make pralines by hand. I'm just i'm not gonna say consistently. I'm so sorry for anyone who is already being driven completely up the wall by this yeah shops new orleans. Still make them by hand out like for example Lays pralines a batch of two hundred takes about forty minutes to make start to finish and dedicated. Three person team can turn out a thousand a day. Whoa right hoof at the new orleans school of cooking. which does cooking demos and classes. They make thousands a day in overlapping batches and one cook who who mostly does candy making for them By the name of our ruffin told the la times. If i had to keep account on how many i make. I think i'd probably quit

Which Matters More, a First or Last Impression?

"Emails from a listener named sam cohn who happens to be a nursing student and he wants to know this our first impressions or last impressions more impactful question or you're thinking about the colonoscopy study i mean honestly there's only one cold i'll give you study will. There are many colonoscopy studies in the medical literature but only one in the psychology literature that i'm aware of exactly that social scientists would know about and that's the famous economy and colleagues study about peak and end the peak and theory. So can you tell us. About the pecan therion. How colonoscopy works to illustrate that so danny katamon and his colleagues did a study where everybody in. The study is getting a colonoscopy. You are randomly assigned. These are people who are already going to be getting on us. Yes i think. It was a collaboration with physicians. If only there were experiments that we could sign up for four which we get a colonoscopy decide. The i would prefer the chemotherapy pleased survey. I'm going to prefer the high fat diet one. This study randomly signs patients who are already signed up for a colonoscopy to either get colonoscopy as usual which i am told and as they say in the article is a pretty unpleasant experience because of the mechanics of the whole thing and the experimental condition is where the exploratory equipment of they have to put into. You is held there for a little longer than would necessarily be the case and your instinct might say oh. That's the bad version of the experiment right because you get more pain but what was so clever about this experiment is that yet. It's more pain. But because you're just having the tip of the scope to sitting there in the rectum. It's more moderate level of pain than what it's moving around during the colonoscopy itself. I think they would probably just call it a mild discomfort compared to a greater discomfort. I mean i can't imagine what it's like to have. The tip of a colonoscopy will come back in a week or two and give us the details so the reason why is interesting. Is that patients who underwent the extended procedure with the additional. Moderate level of pain actually raided the overall experience as less unpleasant and the reason why this was so important is that congressman was at the time developing a theory. Where there is the remembering self and the experiencing self and he says the experiencing self is just experiencing moment by moment. How happy my house. Adami anxious in my hungry am i but the remembering self is consolidating all of that and collapsing it into a memory and he had the theory that when the remembering self processes information and collapses a whole string of moments into one impression. Two things are going to take additional weight. One is the peak of the experience of the high in the low points and the other is the end points and so this famous study affirmed the hypothesis that the end of an experience takes disproportionate weight when we evaluate the overall experience. Now knowing the colonoscopy study what will i ask for if i had the chance to ask my doctor you say gimme the katamon colonoscopy please exactly the katamon special so it's interesting. Is that even though. This finding is a sturdy finding. I don't want the extra pain although since you're inexperienced in colonoscopy so we'll have to see if maybe you'll change your mind after you have but let's say that we want to take it out of the realm of the colonoscopy which i probably should and let's say we want to steer this back toward what sam is asking about the first impression or the last impression imagine a family vacation but say you are apparent with kids and a spouse or whatnot and you go on a family holiday. What would you rather have of the to a great beginning or a great ending y. So oh gosh. I think i would like to have a great ending because i do think the peak end effect does hold true so my ambivalence at my colonoscopy if the vacation we're say four days i would rather have a terrible first day and a wonderful fourth day than the opposite that makes sense because as you were describing the lasting thing is the memory so of course you want that to the positive one. Yeah the whole memory is going to be colored by the last moments more than like the mid point or something. I have to say. Ever since i read that paper years ago and interviewed donald reddell meyer one of the co about it. I have tried to apply the peak in theory all the time in my life in interviews with my family and random encounters with strangers. The minute something good happens. I just stop so you just leave when i learned about this. It made me think first of all of so many rituals that are part of our lives that seem to capitalize on the peak in theory. So dessert why desert last. Why don't we eat it. i. I don't know how much yoga you're doing these days so much. Okay so shiva's nina. Do you know this corpse pose at the end. Of course it feels so good to be sitting there and completely relaxing. And there's a reason. I think that every yoga practice ends with shibata so the next time you think. Do i wanna do yoga. Your memory is least colored by that. But that's challenge this notion so i think you've done a pretty good job persuading everybody. The last impressions are really powerful. But let's talk about first impressions. I mean there's this whole mountain of cliches about that right. You never get a second chance to make a first impression and so on and let's go back to that vacation if you show up with your family to this place where your vacation for four days in your first impression is terrible. Doesn't that set a tone that will be impossible to recover from and from which no final impression is possible to save the experience yet to argue that last impressions take on disproportionate. Way does not say that first impressions. Don't matter disproportionately also for different reasons. First impressions can carry more weight than the mid point or some other point in experience. So one reason is that first impression. Has this kind of path dependency so say you have a really bad day of that. Four day vacation. Everybody's now on a sour mood now. You're all fighting on day two and then because you were fighting on day two day. Three is a total catastrophe. Even those comes out you get off on the wrong foot as it were. And then everything. Kind of goes downhill from there. You know when. I first read this question from sam our first impressions or less imprisons more impactful. My initial impulse was to try to answer it. Like we're trying to do now but my my second impulse and the deeper one was to view it as i do as a writer which is to say wool. Both i think for everything i've ever written whether to book an article Podcast script whatever. I'd probably spend three to ten times more effort on the beginning and the end than on anything else because as a writer was informed years and years and years ago by my experiences a reader which is at the beginning really really matters the ending really really matters and there's also a notion expressed in various places. I don't know where i got it from. Maybe the talmud or shakespeare that the best beginnings have a little bit of the end in them. If the writing is good so i do wonder if maybe sam is pursuing an either or choice when the answer in fact should be an end answer. Both end is usually the answer to checkoff and the great multiple choice of life. The way that this question was framed. It's like when we are meeting another person or when you open a book or you start an article or you start listening to a podcast or watching a movie. It's so clear to us when we just think about those experiences. How the very beginning. It does matter because you are very quickly coming to judgments. And there is this research on thin slicing by among others nominee embody. Maybe you did freakonomics episode on this note. I read about thin slicing in one of malcolm. Glows books blink. This is the idea that you can come to very quick impressions and they're not even necessarily verbally articulated ones but just got feelings of like good or bad in milliseconds and that these very quick impressions can be predictive of later judgements. That are much more deliberative and so forth. That's an argument in favor of a strong first impression because in some cases lake with a move your book or a person if the first impression is not a good one there will be no opportunity for a final impression where the final impression will be one second after the first impression right hopefully less with people and more with like net flicks. So imagine there a job interview and your first impression of candid. It is a positive one. Well danny ottoman would remind us that then confirmation bias is gonna kick in and then for the last fifty eight minutes of the hour long interview. You're just going to be confirming your own positive impression. And so there's a path dependency in judgment and not just the path dependency in life events.

Traveling To Snowdonia

"Let's start with a peak at the natural appeal of the largest national park. In wales snowdonia the highest peak and wales in fact the highest peak in england and wales is called snowden sits in the heart of the snowdonia region and in one of britain's first national parks these welsh islands offer outdoor adventures gorgeous backdrop and draw countless tourists each year. Well skied martin. The land of its is here to help us make the most of our time in snowdonia martin. Thanks for being here. Thank you for having me there. So i've been to your home. Snowden is right in the backyard you grew up there in northern wales snowden in snowdonia national park mean to you. It's a place. I tend to walk quite a lot. It's just a huge and beautiful area. When i say huge. It's massive eight hundred and twenty seven square miles but you don't see that many people in it feels massive because it's it's windy it stark. It's pristine yeah. Small road not allowed to crowds. How tall is mount snowden. It's the massive height of three thousand six hundred fifty feet above sea level at its peak but because it rises more or less out of the sea. Yeah it has the aspect of bigness about it. It's so interesting because here on the west coast of the united states. Three thousand five hundred feet. It's like this is sort of a medium mountain pass for britain. That's a big peak. That's you know. Ben davis is the highest one in britain and there are few mountains over four thousand of the snowdonia national park. You have all of wales peaks over three thousand feet high and on. I think there's only one pecan english over three thousand okay. And this is the north of wales in. I've traveled on wheels. A fair bid. I just if you got limited time. I would recommend north. The peaks only Less than four thousand feet but didn't The british Climbers have mount everest. Actually practice in the snowden area. They practiced in that. Nobody had ever used oxygen on a mountain before. And so they had a stroll round be had Two systems an open and closed. And they thought oh. The closed system is much better. But what they didn't realize goes onto everest the vows and clo- system froze so the luckily they had a couple of open systems with them but they had some rugged enough areas in north wales where thought they could have some practice there. And you do get to some mountain. they're not resorts alert. Sort of hiking centers or something there. There's some beautiful towns. There's town called. Beth goulart galaxy. Guess who described beth killer it's a mountainous area and therefore towns villages. They nestle in the valleys. They don't sit on tops of hills and bathe galax which means ballots grave is useful in a little bowl with rivers running through it stone building. Oh everything is built on. Everything is built stone bridges over the babbling drone bridges and of course slate roofs because wales used to be the slate production center of the world at one time that right so when we think about going to north wales as a visitor and we want to do some hikes. What advice would you give for enjoying the nature of snowden national park and bringing up some calories at the same time you can hike all levels. Mt snowden itself with acid in welsh is an attraction. And there's a railway that runs up if you don't wanna walk for three hours just take the train and this is kind of a cute little tourist steam train. Yeah it goes from some berries up to the top and that's a family out it is. It gets crowded. Some of what i was going to say is that snowden is like a magnet people have heard people know that so that eight hundred and twenty seven square. Miles will get away from snowden. You'll see fewer and fewer and people which is a lovely thing. It is very empty area. It is and if you wanted to have some rugged memory you could hike it without the steam train. Take what five hours or so three hundred. Well five hours up and down if you if you know. It's a nice day. It's a lovely day. Beware say this flat up. Beware of times of year like easter when it's considerably cooler the top dress. Well okay

The Game Awards Sees Huge Viewership Growth Once Again in 2020

"Right. So first some stats released by The Game Awards this morning on their viewership for the twenty-twenty show. They saw $83 million total live streams with a peek of 8.3 million concurrent viewers. That's an eighty four percent growth on the 2019 broadcast every year the show has been growing rapidly in 2017. The total viewership was eleven point five million. So the game awards has seen an increase of seventy one point five million unique viewers over the last three years, but we do have to qualify these numbers comparing live streaming numbers two numbers from TV broadcast. Is how we ended up with bad stats like League of Legends has more viewers than the Superbowl they don't and they still don't but you could find the CNBC article claiming that they do on Google. They haven't taken it down. I don't know why the problem is that it's an apples to oranges comparison. When you compare unique live streaming viewers to TV ratings, which require consistent viewing. That's why the major Esports developers have brought Nielsen's am a stat to quantify their viewership right against World son AMA of twenty-three million. That's great. The Superbowl is around a hundred million. It's not closed but it's still really impressive when we don't have a m a a better comparison to TV ratings are pecan currents. But even that number is going to be higher than a TV rating because that's based on an average audience not on the top total audience wage. So with those qualifications in place and I am not saying the game awards are bigger than any of the he got family. It feels like it's getting close the Emmys and the tone. He's presenting Awards and wage. TV and Broadway respectively are the two least watched award shows with 5.1 million viewers for the Emmys and five point five million viewers for the Tony's in 2019 the Grammys and the Oscars are on another level above music's Grammys saw viewership of 16.5 million and Hollywood's Oscars were at twenty three point six million in 2019. So how's the game awards have a way to go but this is a broadcast first created in 2014. The Oscars have been around since nineteen twenty-nine the Tonys Grammys and Emmys were all created for a 1960 as well. So it's safe to say they had a bit of a head start with the crazy increase in viewership year-over-year and the way the game awards has embraced KO streaming. It's the only one of these award shows on a growth trajectory. Now again until the game awards Embraces am a stats. We won't be able to directly compare but one comparison we can make is the total industry the two biggest dog. Shows my viewership are in music and film video games are a bigger total industry than music and film combined. It sounds crazy. But it's true. The game awards is quickly becoming to go to a commercial for this massive industry and big stars are beginning to appear at it. Always a good step forward give it another five years and we might have to add another letter to he got

Where was this during the Election we'll get to that coming up next hour probably but it's something i'm on a completely different sort of topic which is probably more relatable to your life as we're headed into You know christmas season. And i know my mom was sending out emails saying you know. What are the boys. Want for christmas this year. And sorta stuff like jesus at time for that already. It will absolutely is a snuck up on me with the election in the covert and everything. Oh yeah But i kind of thinking about like getting to the new world of video games and stuff like that. But i saw this headline that you can't. There's a ps five now and an xbox one hundred or something and you can't get them already and it's not even thanksgiving yet. Did you know about that. Well i know you were looking for one michael. Yeah we're looking for the xbox series x for a nephew and you can't find one the whole family search their sold out. We're finding some on ebay for like over a thousand dollars. It's one of those deals together so sold-out out that people who have them are trying to profit from like the early preorders just launched are just started getting received so i believe there is a bit of a A shortage of supply on that. But i don't think this will continue to be a thing as you get closer to chris. Would what would the move be since we just beginning into. It would be buying a ps four. Be a reasonable option instead of going. Ps five four resign now but not really not for your kids and your age. i think. The nintendo switch everything. You need okay. Good done Wash my hands of that upgrade soon. Enough yeah yeah and these things are not cheap. These are these are much closer to computers than like a nintendo machine. Sort of thing My my my personal. Ps for has become essentially my Portal to streaming devices. I use that to turn my tv into a smart tv. That's where i get like my netflix. And everything through that. I don't even really use it that much video games and then when we got into nintendo last year and then certainly games. It was amazing to me like you couldn't find a nintendo switch in the country. Courses is the mid in the middle of a pandemic but that was three years after two years after its launch or something ran out a little bit different of a launch day. Kind of it's a it's a unique thing. They they tend not to over supply. These things early on. I don't know. I don't know a kid that doesn't have one. It's like part of being a kid now. Apparently you can find a ball in a glove on the shelves. Jack yet again Hey sean when you say they're more expensive. How how expensive i was. I was looking for a Arrange on but i think starting at five hundred for like the basic model of it wolf. pius five. That's appreciate you remember in the old days when the hot item that was sold out would be something. That was like. Tickle me elmo. Well that cost dollars when you couldn't find in the country not sold out of. That's how difficulties economic times are. You can't find day one thousand dollar toy for your kid anywhere in the country because they're so loud that's interesting playstation starts around four hundred. The xbox seems to start around five hundred. Yeah that that that. I'd like to hear an economist talk about that when they sold out toy. You can't make them fast enough. To get into people's hands is a five hundred dollar item for your children. I also believe there's a lot of parents who are my age who grew up with always having the latest console using their kids as a reason to not. Oh no honey we gotta get the so the parents who are much more willing and digital natives kind of my age and younger this. This doesn't seem like that. Big of a deal beginning. They've always had a minute. If i could buy something for the kids. That was kind of expensive. But also i would really enjoy. It would make a big difference in my decision making once they go to bed. I can use it yeah. That'd be cool. I don't play the factors in and they do play. You don't need a five hundred dollar xbox to play the gallaghers just as good on your smartphone. i'm a generally. I'm out if i find out something. Sold out even back when they were little. And it was tickle me elmo sort of stuff just if that's the whole thing and you can't find it then i'm not gonna look it's fine. We'll get other stuff. I don't i don't have any distress. I would encourage patients and not jumping on the ebay craze nar on what the retail prices or whatever. They're still plenty of time before christmas now. I don't want to be conspiracy guy. But i'm pretty convinced that the such and such is sold out is an intentional marketing. Similar like zero the The supply where they have the sold so got taken to the hospital because of this movie was so scary companies. Epilepsy are being warned not to attend. Yeah very good at disguising. News is advertise. There is one of those today cardi. There's a new cardi b. video out and she's got a new line of shoes the commercial where she posed as a hindu. God or something right i. News is is is controversial right. I was on. The news is is driving in various groups are accusing her of cultural appropriation and hindu. Gods don't actually wear shoes and blah blah blah and. I thought okay nice job people again this into the newscast so that i now know. She's got a new shoe line supposed controversy leading us around like hogs with a ring. Us being the media. That'd be a smart thing to do though. If you've got enough tickle me almost for every kid in america why would you announced that. Look like they're going to be where you're gonna be walking me deepen tickled all right. You can pick one famer. No hurry or you know you dole them out diamond certain areas you create scarcity call us local state that doesn't know any better say all of them and have them put on the news. You can find one anywhere then. You unleash the warehouses two weeks before christmas and make it exactly. Then you're diving into piles of money like Scrooge scrooge mcduck close. that's a new. That's with the mcrib screwed. Duck preston it's congealed. "Yoyo to dimly that romana friday deep within the bowels of the armstrong and getty communications compound two weeks from black friday. Two weeks from Leftovers anyway today were under the tutelage of our general managers. Did you evolve people. just bring up. Black friday in the world is off. The rails are general manager. I'm gonna go with Tiger woods playing quite nicely in the masters golf tournament which is a golf. It's masters time of year. Well yes because they couldn't have it in the spring all figured how to you. Keep the nfl safe from the covert and they're having it right now are they're great people watching no no pain l. They're a handful of people like members of the club. People's dads but it's a very very small number. The answer is essentially no okay but a guy sink a pot and you'll hear like two people going like this wave to but if you're a golf fan into sports fan it's nice to have a little normalcy. It'll be interesting to see if he may watches. Us open had the lowest ratings ever had nba finals hockey world series. All had the lowest ratings they've ever had It'll be interesting to see my watch. I'm not exactly sure what's driving that phenomenon. But it's we i have Two or three segments prepared analyzing the way the course looks in november. Oh boy compared to april also turf conditions And and that's that's the broad strokes. I'm going to get pretty granular so nobody might watch. But you will have in-depth coverage yes. You have whole foods. Who t looks terrible whole foods. Who wants to save thanksgiving disasters with a new turkey. Insurance plan that that reminds me a good idea. I saw color picture of on my big. Tv of the arby's turkey pillow guffawed having already heard about it and seen a picture in a newspaper whatever it was somebody laying on the couch with that thing around. Doesn't it yeah. They're completely sold out. Though you gotta go on ebay and pay eight hundred dollars So overnight as arizona officially went for a biden so they finally made their announcement in arizona. Not that there was any doubt at this point. I don't think well there. There is doubt among the the pandering media and people who listened to that which includes a lot of the good folks listening to this show which i understand but yeah there are absolutely still outlets claiming a software switch hundred thousand votes people. Send it along a. Say what why are you idiots not talking about this and you know i feel kinda bad about it. The rules complicated enough without people. Try to you know jerk you. Yeah i'm getting more concerned about the incoming biden administration. That's funny me too. And i'm not sure how much it has to do with joe biden. I wonder if the narrative is gonna emerge that. He's you know he's kinda barely aware of what's going on. I don't know well no but even at his sharpest though he's not gonna put this because it's not necessarily a bad quality. He's the person at the party. Everyone likes but when the poo hits the fan. He's not the guy who's gonna take control. He's not going to take the helm and and guide the ship through the The stormy sea evidently. There's a fan on this ship that pu get thrown at my metaphors. Getting a little complicated but He he's not a. This is what i believe. This is what we're going to do guy. He's never been that really. For instance of political had an article read from a little bit later. About how kinda thought he would actually have a press conference and start answering questions. Once she was elected we understand what their strategy was during the election. okay. I think it's still crazy that the media led a candidate get away with that but they did but now as president is politico which is not a right-wing outlet is calling out saying. Oh you gonna ever answer any questions or toast. What's going on or whatever. Is this going to continue. And then yesterday jake. Tapper was pressing Biden's of biden's officials on the whole. He talked about locking down the whole country. And you just put this guy in charge of the corona viruses in favor of lockdowns. Is that what you're gonna do. And they would not answer the question. There are things that joe biden has put forward and that is what he's focused on. Well it doesn't answer my question. Jake tapper said what does that mean But they wouldn't say there's a whole bunch of stuff i just. I don't know where we're going on on these things. That's funny there's a great book into that and that's Kayleigh mcenany was on fox news. Yesterday and i think we actually have that tape In which she's asked a question she said well at that question would probably be better addressed the white house and she's the white house press secretary at what we were doing but i think she was. Oh you are. But i think she was on fox news as one of her titles or something. And that's what they're saying that that's what yeah. Yeah anyway yup to finish my thought. Because i kinda of trailed off i believe joe biden will be influenced not just by you know the aoc comma harris crowd but Lobbyists and staffers. And i just a combination of is nature as a human being in his age. I think he's really going to be a pushover. Now we will We'll watch as long as it lasts but one more thought is further muddy. The waters there's part of me that thinks okay. If the people around him think he needs to be completely shielded from the press and the rest of it for national security reasons. I'm thinking maybe go ahead and shield him no work itself out. I don't know more and all that later what politico said about hey ever gonna talk to us And a bunch of other things on a friday for crying out loud on now. There are turkey insurance plans about. We need to look into these. What's the what's the knuckles. And if i make a claim you're going to drop my insurance. My claim yeah probably because that's the way it's been working. Let's introduce everybody squad. There's our board operator. Michelangelo pressing buttons toggles pulling levers. Are this morning michael. Beg update a little light hearted here in my neighborhood anyway this year. It seems like everybody is decorating for christmas really early. I mean like star before november. First christmas lights are getting up. I see know just christmas decorations. I don't know if this just doesn't seem like christmas. Light time to me. No i was just wondering. Is this a common thing this year where people are just looking for something. This stuff is certainly in the store earlier in. I'm not. I think there was the concern that Halloween wasn't gonna be normal because the the kovin thank. They were hoping that everything. Be back to normal by christmas. It's looking like it's going the other direction. We might be. Shut down as we've been over christmas. Maybe people are looking for something joyful. I think you're absolutely right. Yeah something a little fawn a little spirit lifting something anything whether it comes out of a bottle or it's you know extra christmas lights the macy's thanksgiving parade and all your usual sort of things are a virtual this year remember that means virtual parade couldn't be any more boring than your regular parade. Here's our roker with the start of a new tv series. You've never heard of but they they can do that. Virtual i suppose there's a positive sean who smile lights up there. And how are you doing very well. It was on this day in history the thirteenth of friday the thirteenth. By the way everybody knew that trying to remember in.

U.S. sees record surge in coronavirus cases

"Today. We have had what is the largest number of new cove infections in this country on any single day? Since the pandemic hit, we just hit a new record. This is the screaming headline right now the Washington Post America hits highest daily number of coronavirus cases since pandemic began nation is poised to enter its worst stretch yet of the pandemic with hospitalizations rising in thirty eight states. Wanted. To show you those statements tonight from Caldo Doshi in the ICU nurse and emily caps the. In part because of where they're from. Mr Dotion is an ICU nurse working at what is now converted into a full Cova D- unit in Duluth. MINNESOTA. But Emily Cops, the CNA she's in, as I said, a town called Quinta Kansas. Quinta Kansas is population one thousand. That's Work Winter Kansas's. It's four hours, drive north west of Wichita. If you're trying to find it on the map, it is as rural as rural America gets. That's what's happening. Now, that's what's driving this in the country. The last time we had case numbers anywhere near this Hai literally, most of the cases in the country at that time were from a handful of large population states for Florida and California and Texas and Arizona now, it's a handful of states it's everywhere. And there's something else I want to point out about where we are right now. Can we can we? Put the national graph back up there for a second. Look at look at where we've been not just where we are right now. But where we've been that I peek that we got in early April of terrible right when up to like thirty thousand cases day just atrocious thousands of Americans died hundred thousand people dead by the end of May because of that peak in new cases that we saw in early April. But? Look. How we got to that peak, we got to that peak from here on the graph look at the baseline we built up from in that case, right? We got to that I we were starting at zero it was a new virus, the no, the novel coronavirus we started with basically zero cases in this country in January February, and we went in that first peak from zero cases up to thirty thousand cases today. But then after that I peak and we started to come back down we didn't come all the way back down. We didn't go all the way back down to zero. We never actually got below an average of about twenty thousand new cases every day so that we started to surge again, we were searching from a higher point. There was tons more virus circulating in the country at a baseline level, and so because we were building on a bigger base line. When we had a second surge while there was higher amounts of virus circulating out there every day our second peak ended up being that much higher. Our second peak ended up being twice as I in terms of the peak rate of new infections because our baseline started higher. Right and in that second peak. Tens of thousands of people died right that's when we hit that second peak in high summer. All those cases stacked up with a high summer. We ended up with two hundred thousand Americans dead by the third. Week of September. After we saw that huge pecan cases in the high summer. But now, here's our problem right now because after that second scary second peak in the high summer when we drop back down again, not only do we not go down to zero wouldn't even go back down to where we we're. We're our baseline had previously been. When we drop down after that second peak, our new baseline didn't spend much time low forty, thousand new cases a day. and. Now that huge high baseline number is where we are climbing up from. So how high are we going to get this time I? Mean our peak number of infections keeps getting higher with each subsequent surge because with each subsequent surge, we're building on an increasingly large baseline. An increasingly large baseline of virus circulating in the country and that is happening over time as time moves from left to right on this graph, you can see our country increasingly failing overtime. And getting worse and worse and worse at stopping the spread of the virus, which is why peaks keep going up. If we can't get our baseline down ever if each new baseline between these surges is higher than each. Peak is going to be higher to and that many more Americans are going to die with each search. So, right now, we never got low right right now, this new search that we've got right now is coming out of a baseline. Of Forty thousand cases a day with a ton of virus circulating in the country. And where we are right now heading back up to a new peak, who knows how high it's going to be we've got a forty percent rise on hospitalizations in this country in the past month. In. The past week at least fourteen states have set hospitalization records. And we're just getting worse and worse and worse than even trying to contain it in some places yesterday in one county in. Idaho. Regional Health Board meeting they heard from their regional epidemiologist that the hospitals in that region of northern. Idaho. We're hitting capacity that they're major local hospital had the previous day hit ninety nine percent capacity even after doubling up patients in rooms and buying more physical hospital beds to try to put patients in them the local health board responded to that news from their epidemiologist by voting at that meeting. To repeal the local mask. mandate. They got told their hospitals or at capacity there's nowhere to put patients anymore in their response was to get rid of the local mass mandate. That's northern Idaho. One County over from where president trump recently tweeted in support of a local anti mask rally. Yeah take off the masks open everything up. And now here's what you get. Soaring covid nineteen infection rates in. Kortelainen in the surrounding communities of Northern Idaho have pushed Kootenai Health Hospital to declare it has reached capacity for all medical and surgical

Pecan Log Rolls (MM #3455)

"The Maisonette with Kevin Nation if you grew up in the sixties in the seventies travel through the southeast Southwest even the Mid-West if you see a box shaped building painted with the teal blue roof, there's one thing that comes to mind. It's stuck. He's He's was sort of a convenience store sort of a gas station sort of a restaurant sort of a hold just a little bit of everything started out literally a place to sell pecans that then transformed into pecan log rolls, which they're famous for and there are still a few stuck. He's around the southeast. I know there's one in Indiana. I think it's an Interstate 74 when we used to travel from Ohio, Indiana. We'd see one I know there's also still technically a Stuckey's south of Nashville. It's either on Interstate 24 40 about an hour or two outside of Nashville Stuckey's used to be quite the place. It was kind of a little bit of everything. I guess really the precursor to what's now truck stops where you can stop in get a quick bite to eat. You can get your gas you get your little tchotchkes and you get those famous log rolls, even if you don't like the cons there truly was something special about them.

The Sober Lush

"Hi Everyone. Welcome to recovery our where we talk about life beyond the bottle and what happens after we stopped drinking. I'm your host, Tricia, and the only thing I regret about not drinking is the time I wasted figuring out if I wanted to stop. Thank you for joining me. Today's introduction ties right into our interview. We've got the two authors of the brand new book. The sober lush out today, and we're talking about creating and celebrating a big and beautiful sober life, and this has been the mission of the podcast since day one almost two years ago, talking about life beyond the bottle. What happens after you stop drinking? You know I don't like the. The discussion to camp out in our old lives when we were drinking. Because the thing that made you miserable can't be your focus for the rest of your life. Don't get me wrong. Those stories. They have a place. You know they do serve a purpose, and that's why do make sure that each guest each week tells their story and keeps in under five or ten minutes. But after. After you've quit drinking after you've unlearn that habit. After. You've created a life where not having alcohol around becomes normal. There's gotta be something more. We don't want to become martyrs who are wallowing in our lives of deprivation. Alcohol alcohol-free life full of pleasure and joy full of indulgences and things that wake up our senses full of adventure and freedom. And let me be very clear. This doesn't happen overnight. So for those of you. Who Email me asking? Hey, when does the good part start? I don't have a clear cut answer for you, but the closest thing I can say is not immediately and be patient, but learning your way through sobriety, and getting to that point eventually I hope you'll find a way to get to know yourself and learn what you like and what you don't like. Often you'll learn that. You don't like some things that you used to like when you were drinking. Amanda Talks about this exact phenomenon in the interview. Often you'll find that there's a part of yourself. That was numbed by alcohol. And maybe you'll learn that. Your personality is a little different than you originally labeled it as. An in the moments where you're bored and wondering okay, what do I do with my time? Now I hope you'll start to search for the simple pleasures that feel decadent, because they are easily accessible in sobriety things that were impossible to appreciate when you were drunk or hung over. I spent all day Saturday this weekend out in the country about an hour and a half outside of the city man Brandon I got up early and drove out there to a monthly swap meet, and then visited with some old family friends of his. We spent about five hours out in the hot sun, walking through booths of new furniture vintage junk in just about everything in between. We shared giant cups full of cold, fresh squeezed lemonade and lime made I dip in dots for the first time since nineteen ninety-two. We purchased dollar. Fly swatters and fancy paper straws in containers of flavored popcorn. When it got hot, we found pockets of shade and people watched. Later on we went to his friend's home. That's on a ton of acreage and drove his truck all around the property to see his buffalo donkeys, and try to in spot, the family of Fox's that are living underneath one of the buildings. I watched a turtle duck in the water. As we drove by the pond, we studied vines climbing up the giant ancient pecan trees, and we laughed as the dog tried so hard to her. The buffalo who were not having it. Later on we went to a winery to see more of the family and a glass of cold ice water, and she snacks from the car were all I. wanted while everyone else was drinking wine. And I stopped and I actually asked myself at one point. What is my body? Really want right now. And it was cold water all the way, and for a fleeting moment I remember that if I had been there when I was drinking I, would've wanted water, but I would have ordered wine instead because I had to. I would have compromised what I really wanted with what I thought. I needed because I didn't rule my own life alcohol did. Later on when we drove home, we listened to the new Jason Isabel Album Sing along and I cried a little bit, which is pretty typical and listening to his music, because crying feels good sometimes and I can feel my feelings now, clearly enough to know which ones need grief to be processed. And when we pulled into town back at home, we ate at

'Elder Scrolls 6' Details Still 'Years' Away, Says Bethesda VP Pete Hines

"The elder scrolls six next news will likely be years from now This is from Joe. Scowls at Aegean who writes? Don't expect details on the eligible six until years from now according to Bethesda senior vice president. Pete hines responding to a tweet asking for information about the next Gen. Game Hines was making clear. That news on the on the still fairly unknown star field is coming. Well before anything on elder scrolls have the tweet here right. Quitting Myers on at Kilowatt Q. Tweets at behind says all right check it out at which is behind his twitter. Let's cut the shit. When can we expect some info on Hashtag the girls six? We need this. Hashtag with the Hashtag elder schools. Hashtag behind responded to that saying it's after star. Fueled which you pretty much about. So we're coming to me coming at me for details now and not years from now. I'm failing to properly manage your expectations. We are in the article continues. We already know we already knew. Not to expect star field or eligible six news this year. So it'll likely be some time before we hear anything about either game but that's the won't be holding a digital replacement forty-three this year but it does plan to deliver news on death loop and go soir. Tokyo in some form. Tim Does this surprise you. it does not surprise me my favorite thing about it though is quitting. Myers the First Guy. The tweeted just straight up. Sam Cut this shit expects of Info. I love the brazing this of it. All but also hines our boy being transparent trying to come through and so the expectations right which. I think is a key element of the games industry over the last couple of years. I think has been this idea of. Hey they're people too and US people want to get to know those people and we want there to be a type of dialogue back and forth with what social media allows conversations. Like this to happen. I feel like there's no excuses to not transparent about this type of thing right when Especially when it comes to expectations and especially in a world that no longer has three and a lot. More questions are up in the air. Where every year would be like this week. What's everyone announcing? What's but they're going to do. But does this press conference because we know. But that's going to do a press conference now. We know they're not doing one. We don't know we know they're going to be parts of some of the various game festivals going on this summer. Where are they going to be? To what extent is that going to be focusing on games already know about New Games one game? It's definitely not going to be what we traditionally see from. Thanks to kind of like rolling out there. Update their entire catalog right. But I do think that this is a learning curve that everyone's going through and as we saw last week with xbox staying the I don't think anyone's ever going to nail it because people are always going to have their own expectations going into these different events. But I do think that the more you can get ahead with it. With facts of star field is next. Agusan important thing no girls six years away. That's an important thing to to get ahead of right. So people aren't even speculating. Yeah like especially for schools which is a title that you showed off or not showed up but you you literally showed off the title. I believe either last year the year before that I can remember times a flat circle at this point but you gave us the title. Our school six. I feel like I feel that might have been a mistake. I think that might have been too early. Understand why they did. It did it. Because announcing star fuel start you worried about what's happening with schools? We are very much looking forward to the next elder scrolls right because Room was. This was a breakout success. Like of course like people already knew. But that's the studios specifically from fob three and oblivion the previous elder scrolls games but sky room was a success on another level and with that being the case right like people are very much looking. Forward to elder scrolls six but when star field is your next project. And you're you're announcing that right. You WanNa you kind of. WanNa you WanNa let that happen with the lease like hate skepticism as possible. And the way you do that is by also confirming to people at yes. Oh Scroll six is still coming in the future what that what that does though is this right. It has people tweeting at behind being like. Yo like so When can we expect this knowing Dan? Wells not going to be like it's not imminent by any means old. School six is years and years and years away at this something that I've been talking about a lot with with you. Greg over the last couple months is. I like the idea of different games having different types of schedules. When it comes to to hype marketing I feel like the majority of games would benefit from the fallout four rollout plan which is kind of like announcement press tour and release within right. Yeah like that's great. That's fantastic but I do think that there's something special about games. That are kind of like the more Unicorn death stranding types. Where here's this game that's announced and we know it's coming we know it's going to be a huge game but it's GONNA be years down the line? I think that elder scrolls is that type of game where we know. There's going to be an oldest sex. Guess what there's going to be. An elder scrolls sadden like. That's how this works right. So I just announcing it and confirming that it's happening is to me kind of like a metric prime four situation where. I welcome it like to me. Knowing that a metric prime is coming is valuable information granted. That's a perfect example of how this can go wrong where it wasn't going well they had to restart. It's going to be even later than even plant but as a Nintendo Fan. I know a metro is coming before that it would have just been speculation of. Is it ever come back? What's going on now? It's like okay. At least it's happening and I really would elder scrolls. We know it's happening so it's like yes. People are going to be asking questions. But then I feel like now pecan actually give answers whereas before with this question he would necessarily be able to say After star field. Because it's not officially announced even though

Federal Reserve Expands Business Lending Program

"That in response to the economic impacts from the coronavirus the federal reserve is stepping up and stepping in in a big way supporting liquidity in the market not just buying treasuries but also going into the corporate bond market to get a sense of what that means for the credit markets welcome Bob Michael Bob the chief investment officer and head of global fixed income currency and commodities at JP Morgan asset management Bob thanks so much for joining us so as we take a look at what the fed is doing here in its support of the markets in liquidity the markets what do you make of their moves into the corporate credit markets good morning Paul but I think moves into the corporate market and also let's not forget into the municipal market and into parts of the non agency mortgage market where critical and necessary so I applaud it they try to keep those markets functioning they they could allow what was happening in those markets where they were effectively froze and with very little trading going on because they were perceived to be outside of any kind of central bank safety not to continue to operate that way so I I think it was a good first step Bob the fed has said that they're going to delve in the into the corporate debt market they have yet to actually do so and I think it's interesting that yesterday fed chair Jay Powell indicated they were willing to go further and yet they haven't even taken the first steps when it comes to actually implementing it in the credit markets do you think the market's gotten ahead of itself piling into junk bonds in particular with the expectation they'll be backstopped by the fed yeah I think so and when you think about what the fed is doing third they're going to buy fallen angels or companies that were rated investment grade towards the end of March that may drop into the high yield market I think that's smart because those are companies that were running basically investment grade financials before the crisis the crisis isn't their fault and you were putting too much pressure on the rating agencies you're effectively telling the rating agencies without being able to buy fallen angels that they could be leveling a death sentence on these companies so they they took that away but when we look at their support of the high yield market we estimate that it will be roughly ten percent of the high yield market it's not a lot it will keep the high yield market functioning but it also doesn't prevent high yield companies from defaulting I think you're going to see a rise in default rates for a prolonged period of time so but here's what I'm struggling to understand yesterday after fed chair Jay Powell's press conference about half a billion dollars flowed into H. Y. G. or at least that was the total amount of flows yesterday into the biggest U. S. high yield bond ETF which bought by the broad market not just fallen angels and you said that you do think the market's gotten a little ahead of itself so does that mean that you're selling high yield bonds here what does that mean in terms of your positioning well it means a lot of things I think well a lot of the market got confused when he said there would be a new platform sheet on the man's main street landing facility and most investors took that to mean that the leverage limit that was put in place might be relaxed or eliminated which we've been broadened out the coverage two more highly leveraged companies and a broader array of of the universe after all they they all are employers well I think people additionally winter that we step back and say hang on it in this market you've got to take every company and you've got to structure than we do multiple stress test trying to think you know how how how deep could the recession go for how long where does the pecan unemployment we do things like a shut down for nine months and unemployment peaking at over twenty percent and then see what a company's balance sheet could look like could it withstand it do they have access to capital and by the way when you run that kind of stress you find a lot of companies even though they may have access to capital at that point in time actually it doesn't make sense for them to do additional borrowing because they'll realize at the other end of this their ability to pay back all that that won't be there the market's got to start to realize that just because there's access to lending and borrowing doesn't mean companies will continue to take on another turn of leverage at some point they'll realize they can't service it sebab given you know the backdrop for your economic outlook at that JP Morgan investment management asset management how much risk are you guys willing to take right now a very moderate level of rescued in fixed income group the core of our portfolios are invested along the stream of contrast with the central banks what they're buying you buy that's a pretty good safety net at least for liquidity around you then roll up your sleeves and and look at what falls outside of that safety net in Yemen the the corporate space in the securitized based in the meeting space and see who can withstand an extended period of a shut down and high unemployment and then you find out that there are some companies out there there are some industries that can but there are awful lot that count I'm just wondering Bob what's your base case you said you're looking at potential stress cases of nine months just quickly here what's your base case for the economy well our base case is that that you don't return to normal for a while and that we will see unemployment peaked at over twenty percent and then as you start to get to the end of of twenty twenty one you're down to about nine percent now that may seem great relative to a peak of over twenty percent but let's not forget that during the financial crisis unemployment peaked at ten percent and we know what kind of pain that was to try to recover from that so there's a lot of hardship ahead this feels to me like the second quarter of two thousand and eight where the first quarter was horrible there were policy responses and and the market immediately became optimistic and then the horror of what had actually happened starts to hit into their data Michael with a pretty bleak assessment Bob even right many times it's always a pleasure speaking with you Bob Michel chief investment officer and head of global fixed income currency and commodities at JP Morgan asset management saying invest alongside the fed don't go into much riskier credit and really the idea that this reminds him a lot of the second quarter of two thousand and eight when people said Bear Stearns was anomaly and then of course in September

The Superfoods Episode: One on One with Joy Bauer

"It's something we've heard about a lot over. I don't know I probably started hearing about superfoods. Twenty or twenty five years ago and people are always saying what is a superfood so do superfoods really exist? And how would you define what a superfood is not a formal scientific definition for a superfood and I think we throw that word around so often all of the time for so many years but but to me? So my definition of a superfood is really any wholesome food that has one or more nutrient that can help to elevate our health and so that sort of opens up to hundreds and hundreds maybe even thousands of superfood end super beverages so again just something that is wholesome and it has goodness Senate that can help us to feel and look amazing. Wow so there probably are hundreds and if not thousands of superfoods but I bet you have favorites so like what would you say are your top five? Hate to put you on the spot top-five superfoods and what makes them so super sleuth. Yes so there. There are quite a few. I would say that on Wiki. Greens are definitely going to be up there. So I'm actually GonNa Group on Spinach and Kale publicly Swiss chard which is a little less known. But I'M GONNA I'm GonNa Group those together and that's because it these things. Basically are nature's multivitamin right they have A. Through Z. Everything under the sun loaded with antioxidants. They're very very versatile. And by the way whether it's fresh or frozen against Spinach Kale Collard Greens. All of these. Things are incredibly good for you so that even might be my number. One number two is definitely going to be colorful berries and again fresh or frozen because they're so filled with antioxidants and they're also on good for so many different directions right. You can add them into smoothies. You can put them on Oatmeal or yogurt. You can work them into pancake. Batters MUFFIN batters. You could pop them straight up and enjoy them snack. Another one would have to be lend bills. I really trying to help. People move more towards a plant based diet on a full disclosure. I love chicken. I love fish. I eat green red needs so I do eat all of those things but I think the war were able to sort of embrace. In incorporate lent build another plant based proteins into our diet. Better off we are for our bodies for the environment on and there's nothing like a lash S. vegetable action packed lentil still. Oh my God. Don't even get me. Started about half his threes beautifully as well. I could talk about food all day. So lentils yeah I feel like lentils are sort of a sleeper hit. People were first discovering. How amazing they are truly And then so those are three. Do you have two more nothing seeds? Again I'm clumping two different ones into one category. Those will always come out on top and when it comes to not really would ever. Not You love best. It could be almonds cashews pecanins macadamia peanuts each not rings different asset to the table like for example almonds. Happy all have heart healthy fat. They all have some protein fiber but almonds have calcium and Pecans have the most amount of antioxidants and peanuts have the most protein so every single not has a tremendous asset so I'd like to bury it up sprinkled on anything in anything and I think sunflower seeds. Don't really get enough love but Pumpkin seeds sunflower. Seeds are absolutely awesome and fantastic just like nuts and also she s seeds and flax seeds. So I think nuts and seeds would definitely earn a spot. I love those also. I mean you didn't mention cashew. Which is my favorite. Not But somehow I feel like it's the least nutritious I'm so glad you mentioned that. That was my bad cashews. Have the most zinc and zinc right now super important because zinc is an immune booster? Oh how much has shoes made my day. I love cashews. I by the great big Containers from the price club stores COSCO and BJ. Than I could be dangerous.

Who Put the Baby in King Cake?

"We Cubans Mark Our holidays with glee cheer and often mouth watering desserts. Entered the New Orleans King. Cake the frosted coffee cake like sweet roll typically eaten between January sixth and fat Tuesday. Which is the day before lent begins? It's a staple of the Mardi gras season for those unfamiliar with this festive dessert. The New Orleans version is often made of rich Danish style dough braided and shaped into a large ring in often with one or a variety of fillings. Think cinnamon sugar chocolate. Raspberry preserves chopped sugar cons or sweetened. Cream cheese it's usually covered in a suite glazer frosting and decorated with Gold Green and purple sugar or icing and of course hidden somewhere within the tender layers of this frosted treat is a small plastic baby which sounds real weird if you're unfamiliar so let's back up a little. Because the origins of King cake go way back and yes. There are kings involved. Kim Cake derives from the holiday. Three Kings Day also called tiffany which is a Christian Feast Day celebrated on January sixth with the day after the Twelfth Day Christmas this holiday celebrates the Biblical Tale of the Three Kings Aka. Three wise men or madge by visiting the baby. Jesus it kicks off the Mardi Gras or carnival season which lasts until the first day of lent which is a moving holiday that falls forty days before Easter. Anyway the three kings are. Why can cakes are a seasonal treats in the shape of a crown or a more or less circular band anyway? Those three colors decorated with our symbolic purple for justice. Green for faith and gold for power and tradition holds that the plastic baby in the cake represents Jesus just as Jesus showed himself to the three wise men he will show himself to those enjoying king cake. Whoever finds the baby in there slice is crowned King or Queen for a day or hosts the next Mardi gras celebration or at least buys the cake next year? It's a lucky. Token other Tokens Coins. Peas. Pecans beans were what was up in the past and may still show up hundreds of thousands of king cakes or sold at New Orleans Mardi gras season. I couldn't track down a firm total but the big commercial bakeries ramp up to producing three thousand five hundred king cakes per day. Their busiest the Danish style dough is the most popular. But it's not the only kind either flakier or fluffier dough can sometimes be found and New Orleans isn't the only place to serve king cakes by far in northern France. You can find glut their Roy a flaky. Puff Pastry was sweet almond. Filling Bulgaria and Greece have similar dishes traditionally served around the New Year but the New Orleans. Pancake is closer to the Toda. Roy from southern France made with Brioche and the Rosca de raise from Spain a ring of sweet bread topped with icing and candied fruit. Which makes sense given these Spanish and southern French settlers and colonists who got the city started in the seventeen hundreds but Mardi gras and other carnival celebrations have roots. That go way back. People have been celebrating the end of winter and the return of longer warmer days up forever. Since the first brave human dared to celebrate ancient Babylonia may have held first Carnival Circuit Two thousand six hundred BC E. This was a festival that celebrated Mirth and change through satire by making a show of role reversals. There would be a parade through the streets. A pair of peasants would be royalty for the day and royalty would act like fools pranks played. Folks would wear costumes depicting social classes other than their own and everyone partied. Sound a little familiar. These traditions were incorporated into and or disseminated through Grecian and Roman cultural traditions. The first king cakes make all the way back ancient Rome. As part of the celebration of Saturnalia. A Winter Solstice and harvest festival a pastry would be baked with the fava bean hidden inside and the finder would be named king for the day. The tradition became a part of epiphany celebrations in the Middle Ages. The fava bean was sometimes replaced by porcelain token of a crowned head to take some of the pagan out of it. When Spain France spread their outposts to the Americas the king tradition came with them and took on a life of Zone particularly in New Orleans. The baby trinket didn't come along until a bakery called Mackenzie's came up with the idea in the nineteen fifties. At first these figures were made out of porcelain and baked inside the cake. But we're eventually replaced with plastic which comes alongside the cake due to concerns about baking plastic. These early cakes were more brioche like or pedals they like and didn't have filling. That didn't come around until the nineteen eighties as acres began adding more eggs and sugar to the recipes or straight up switching to Danish pastry recipes. An anecdotal tail puts the first commercial. Filled can cakes in New Orleans tonight. Eighty-three according to Baker Jones semen that year baked four filled cakes? Her husband took one to work and they got twenty five calls about filled cakes within thirty minutes through the nineteen eighties and nineties. Cajun and creole food became national trends and shipping technology improved as well allowing for more or less affordable overnight shipping then in two thousand four the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina honed New Orleans sense of community history and pride and both local and national hunger for these traditional dishes which means that celebrates have a veritable glut of kinky options today. Miniature king cakes can kick doughnuts. Can Kate Vodka can take bourbon? Milk Punch can kick smoothies and of course in a city that loves the party. A whole can cake festival held in late. January

New Hampshire Primary Election Results 2020

"Let's return now to the results of the New Hampshire primary key win for Bernie Sanders terrible night for Joe Biden. The first one either while while sound is is so far at least winning the race for Democrats supporters can he convert that into the wider political appeal that he would need to defeat. Donald Trump in November. Joining me to discuss that and some of the day's other top stories are Vincent Vinny. UK correspondent for Euronews and political analyst and former BBC political correspondent. Kara okay. I'm carol normally. If you label anybody in American politics anything in American politics a socialist you might as well call them Communists Ernest. It's it's it's completely fatal and you can see candidate sanders going up against trump and socialists. Being about the only thing Donald Trump says for the next six months absolutely Leeann I think socialism socialist does have different connotations in the United States. It's still something where Donald Trump can successfully whip hop certainly a part part of the American electorate against him. I think what's interesting here is that yes last night was a good night for Bernie Saunders. But he was only a fraction ahead of Pete. Booty judge and we've seen Amy Klobuchar also showing very strongly. There's quite a long way to go in this race Bernie Sanders. This is in many ways. The Jeremy Corbyn of American politics. He's got this very powerful loyal. Fan Base significant pecan grassroots support activists who go out there and campaign for him but he's a very divisive figure. He's divisive even within the Democratic Party. And as I think you suggested that there are many even within the Democratic Movement who think that he is just too left-wing to socialist too radical to win over the number of votes the center ground to win votes back from Donald Trump. I mean Vincent. Those I had some voters being interviewed yesterday. Who Democrats who said? Look if it's if it's Bernie. We're not GONNA win. You might as well not even have the election because trump's in trump's GonNa win the election is there that sense and I suppose there is a parallel here to something we'll discuss later in the Labor Party in the UK. The sounders does very well with activists goes very well with committee diehard Democrats who are going to vote Democrat anyway but it's that question of whether he can win over those voters in the middle the ones who voted for a bomb but then voted not for trump as a two things on this. The first is yeah. There's obvious parallel with Jeremy copen hip. There's an obvious parallel with Donald Trump. Someone who wasn't a Republican came in as the fringe is candidate managed to get a strong movement behind him that really supports them then took over the party. And we're seeing the same thing with Bernie Saunders in. He has this movement that he carried forward Ford from the last election. He never ready suspended parts of his campaign the going through the last couple of years and now he is. He's still registered for the next senatorial race as an independent not even as a Democrat. And so he's coming. He's reregistered as Democrats run. He is running away with it. In these first two states and for the other candidates you know De de Joe Biden is basically what Bush was last time round. You Know Jeb. Bush even brought his. You know his brother former two-time president his dad on board the campaign and still couldn't make a breakthrough so we're seeing that same thing with Joe Biden. We'll see whether he he's GonNa Mention Obama even more in the build up to South Carolina but really now he is pretty much out of this this and if the Democrats want to get moderate candidate will clover shirt. You've got Warren. You've got pete. They and Bloomberg is well. Of course it's not forget they now need to pick one one of them and the others need to fall away. Otherwise they're going to be so split that Bernie Sanders is going to run away with this and the second thing to say is there is an ugly side to the Sanders Campaign Ryan as well. We saw it again. Last night. Cynthia Nixon the actress from sex in the city who try to become New Yorker Governor recently and is now a Bernie supporters. She had to shut down a crowd out who booed when Hillary Clinton's name was mentioned. And we're seeing there. Is this kind of vindictive side and Bernie's campaign the Bernie Bros.. Who are turning off mainstream even Democrats so it remains to be seen if Bernie can bring parties together because there are people unhappy with his conduct? The last election in Calvin mentioned some of the sort of people seen seen as the middle ground candidates. The aim Who did very well yesterday? But he's done well in in both the people around him seem to be trying to frame him now now as twenty twenty s version of Obama as the outside of that no one had heard of. Who's going to storm through the race? But I mean is he is he. Is he in Alabama a Buddha Jiji. You're talking about now. We'll look. He has clearly got charisma. He's young Buddy lacks experience I think it's very difficult to see how he could win over those saunders supporters. Just as. It's very difficult indeed to see. How Bernie Ernie Saunders can win over those that larger number of motors? I think what's interesting if you look at what happened last night Saunders was the victor there were about a third of the votes went to Saunders Elizabeth Warren on the more radical wing of the party more than half went to the others who more or less centrist. But as Vincent was pointing out They've got to make up their minds. Because if that memorial memorial vote is split between several different candidates Then there is a strong possibility that saunders come through the middle. I think we do have to watch out for Michael Bloomberg Berg who has fought this rather on docks campaign of skipping housed on all these primaries but his spending he spent since the beginning of the year more than three hundred million dollars on advertising and advertising campaign. That's getting through too much larger numbers than and these political events which perhaps only capture a small amount of the electorate now. He's a bit of an unknown quantity But he we'll certainly feel looking at the fact that there's no other really clear front runner at the moment that he still has to be in there with Jones. Obviously we will learn more. We we get to Super Tuesday at the beginning of March not may well be the death knell for Joe Biden. If he's not able to to to get anywhere but we never parallels British and American politics and in the general election in the UK. Back in December. You bumped into people said the choice I've been given is a hard right conservative government or hard left Labor government Vote is actually. Don't feel they sit in the middle in the end of the vote is did break left him right pretty much consistently if you go through that in America if it sounded Zondo's trump then what happens to those middle ground. American voters is the reason. No third party candidate has ever done anything other than screw up the mathematics the electoral college so presumably they all just going to have to pick a side. Yeah people always you know early on campaign people worried about Tulsi Gabbard splitting the Democrat. Vote but but I think just to go back on one part of your question. A we call Joe Biden now on one thing is that he polls extraordinary high with black voters and has ninety-nine percent name recognition in America. When we get to the next one which is South Carolina very You know African American state. He might surge ahead that it was interesting that he actually. He left New Hampshire last night before the result and he had a rally in South Carolina and then with Super Tuesday much more diverse state. So he could pull stuff back Because because you know Pete Bootleg does very poorly with black voters. Amy Club shells also good issues as a time as a lawyer in in terms of criminal issues that she prosecuted And so do you know. It's not absolutely so not yet but yeah it is for a lot of people. You Know Bernie. Democrats will have the same problem that Republicans had with trump. Is it. Do you just hold your nose and vote for him can burn. He put through a message of we have to get trump out which is what Joe Biden has been trying to do. You might not think I've got all these you know snazzy new policies but I'm just the take back the soul of America get trump out and what what the camp has to do behind Bernie is to really say say you know you have to hold your nose and vote for him just to get trump out but his policies and particularly an attack. I heard last night. The hadn't heard before with Bernie is you know. He took his honeymoon in the. US are before the Iron Curtain fell now in America that is going to play so bad and I think we're going to hear a lot more about that in the next couple couple of weeks

I, you know, when we come up with a different assortment of cheesecake, we'd like to add to listen, that's just something I had to because you know. I mean, I'm not gonna say I get bored with the natural flavors, but we always like to think outside the box. And I, you know, I never really did the pecan or anything like that with the, you know, the savory sweetness or the peanut butter. So I thought about that house, which I was gonna bring your bacon and peanut butter cheesecake. That's what I wanted to do. But I knew you was you know, where everything going on with you, not eating the bacon. And Matt we gotta make sure Sean gets one of the coupons. Yeah. There are many one it drags like a MO fo toward the second. It's very very slow moving. It's they said everything, and it is stretched all hell, but it's a classic. And I love it. And I love it in the midst of. The problems. I think it's better. But to dismiss it our to deny that there is a magical element to that move. I'm not dismissing that there's a magical elements of the movie I'm just saying that if it were between that and the original Grinch, the animated when I would choose that. That's fine. I actually think it's almost like a different things different. Yeah. Just not see I literally have only seen that movie. Jim Carey grant once again. Maybe. But the fact that you could earn a little magic. You know what I'm saying? The bridge. He's amazing. If it wasn't Jim Carey wouldn't give a shit, right? It wasn't Jim Carey wouldn't have been as if someone else did that in that the fact that Jim Carey definitely plays a role in. Yeah. "Cotton harvest costing some of the states farmers, tens of thousands of dollars joining us now via Skype from Atlanta with more on how they're coping, his Wall Street Journal reporter Cameron mcwhirter Cameron. Can you give us a sense of just how widespread the crop destruction in Georgia is and how does it compare to other storms assessments are still being done, but they think that this will far surpass anything any storm that has hit Georgia previously. The main reason for that is it arrived at a horrible time because his right as harvest was about to take place for cotton and pecans. They came at a terrible time. Also the strength of the storm. It came across the panhandle of Florida, and by the time it got to Georgia was still a hurricane force winds, which nobody in Georgia South Georgia remembers anything like that and it absolutely devastated the cotton crop, a large. Swath of the cotton crop at knocked over lots of pecan trees. It basically trashed what everyone ivory farmer thought was going to be spectacular harvest. It sounds like from what you're saying in the farmers you spoke to that this was an unprecedented event and something there was very little time to prepare for. That's correct. They, well, you know, there was there was a lot of warning that the storm is coming that it was going to be powerful people still sort of expected and hoped that by the time it got to Georgia, the winds would be powerful, but perhaps dropped down to a tropical storm force winds, which would be slightly less than a hurricane. But as the days went on, it became clear that they really had to move fast. So farmers were working well into the night. There crews were working well into the night beginning in the early part of the week until the rain started with cotton. You cannot take it once it's wet. It's it's, it's it's worthless. So they had to pick until the rain started, and then they had to stop. While the assessments are still being done, how about the farmers you spoke to anecdotally, how much in financial losses are they expecting? Let's the great anxiety in South Georgia because they all had crop insurance, but it was all varying levels varying degrees of crop insurance. The crop insurance is paid out based upon previous years yields. This was gonna be a great year, so they're not sure what they're going to get. Also, for example, the pecan growers that we were speaking with those pecan trees were knocked down. They're not insured. The pecans are insured in the cons are laying over the fields. So the trees which some of them were over hundred years old are just a loss, and they're just going to have to eat that loss in replan, but it'll take six to ten years for for contrary to start producing the nuts that needs to be worthwhile. That's a long time how our farmers coping. In the meantime, the general impression of the of the people we spoke with with sort of stuff. Sund a resilience. I guess. I would say they were just the couldn't believe that this said, hit as hard as it did as as deep inland as it did. And now they're just trying to pick up the pieces there frantically calling insurance agents to try to see what kind of money they're gonna get. They wanted Justice out as soon as possible. They're saying what harvests they can possibly salvage. Some of the cotton was able to be salvaged. Some of the pecans will be salvageable, but it's really just a a massive triage operation now to see what they can pull from what they again, what they thought was going to great, great year. What about those who signed contracts prior to the storm hitting? How are they going to meet those orders? That's another great question. I just don't that farmers just don't have the answers. They there. If you had a contract for a certain amount of product that you had deliver, you'd have to deliver that product. So you're going to have to find it somewhere else. You know, you're gonna have to go to Alabama or Tennessee and try to find cotton, or the cons, or whatever product you. Signed and you're gonna have to try to fulfill that contract. So it's gonna be stressful for everyone involved for a long time. And that goes for the farmers that goes for the cotton. Gin operators that goes for the people who process the pecans where they're going to sell them..
