Are Movie Theaters Screwed?
"I'm Sean. Fantasy and Amanda Events, and this is the big picture. A conversation show about movies. There is a lot of news about movies in the world right now, but not so many movies, it is officially August which means three things one, it is hot as hell outside. To its Amandus, birthday happy, birthday Amanda. Thank you shot three a very bad time for movies and this year. Of course, it's unusually bad. Thanks to covid nineteen. So man, we have a lot to talk about today's episode a lot about the state of the movie business and more specifically about where you didn't spend your birthday, which is in a movie theater. Because movie theaters are not open and it's sort of feels like movie theaters are screwed. We're going to talk a little bit about some of the decisions that Mc made last week and the ramifications of that, and maybe some of the financial decisions that AMC made earlier today, and what that means for the future of movies. It's a very complicated time. Can you help us understand just a little bit of what transpired last week between? AMC and Universal Studios. Yes. So we got the ultimate resolution of the great trolls world tour fight of twenty twenty, which is that after much public negotiating and wild statements made on both sides, AMC theaters and universal came to an agreement and universal movies. Now will be shown in AMC theaters with a new theatrical window of seventeen days, which is notably shorter than the previous window that most that all studios and movies operated under in the United States. That window used to be in the neighborhood of between two and three months, and that meant films has a plan theaters for nearly a quarter of the year and sometimes more than that before you could find them at home and that's changing I sort of I. You know it's clearly changing for the purposes of universal movies. No other studio has come to this agreement and universal. Universal has only come to this agreement with one theater chain. Am See. So this is not a cataclysmic event, but it certainly seems presidential. It certainly seems as if it's something that is going to send shockwaves throughout the industry for the future. You know. Obviously, we spent so much time on this show talking about the slow atrophying of the theatrical experience. This feels as significant. A story has happened in that respect I was just doing some doing some Napkin math last night about box office receipts, and so over the past ten years, the annual domestic box office has averaged about eleven eleven, billion dollars in the United, states, and right now, it sits at about one point, eight, billion dollars with just about two plus months of true box office. So. These are really desperate times for movie theaters and so am see I. I'm trying to understand what specifically is motivating AMC's whiplash decision making because as you said, Adam Erin who is the CEO of AMC had some very strong words for universal's decision about trolls world tour about four or five months ago, and now they've made nice and in fact it it sort of feels like AMC took a hit here in this negotiation, what do you think is animating their their decision making deep financial desperation just this absolute total. What else can we do to keep the lights on? which I am not a do not have an MBA. Okay, and I'm not an economist, but there has a lot has been written. You know in deadline and in the Wall Street, Journal and the trades about the extremely precarious financial situation of AMC in particular, and obviously all of this is heightened by the fact that movie theaters have not been open for months now and they don't have a business model because of covid nineteen but I think you know covid nineteen has really exacerbated. What was. A A tricky situation for all movie theaters. But especially, it seems AMC just because of how it's business it structured and you mentioned today there assume news about AMC's restructuring in order to. Reallocate some of its debt, but it just all seems under the guise of we have to keep the lights on because we do not have cash on hand and movie theaters aren't open and we don't know when they're going to be able to be open most places, and if we don't have cash coming in, then our business no longer exists. So AMC it even it seems within the realm of the theater chains who are all obviously impacted by covid nineteen seems to be really motivated to figure out any income stream that it can right now. That's. That's at least my reading I. Don't know what you think. No I. think that's exactly right and I think it's notable that in this deal with universal in addition to clearing new cash flow from that debt restructuring the you mentioned there, the AMC is going to get money from universal when it takes its films to peavy od after that seventeen day window, and that's that's a highly unusual arrangement for streaming revenue to filter back into a theatrical a theatrical. I don't what, what would you call it? A tithing basket I'm not sure what does that. What does that represent to Hansie's business I? Don't I'm not sure I understand

This interview was recorded several weeks ago. This is with a woman named Rachel. Peavy who owns a company called blissful budget. You might remember me mentioning Rachel back in November if you've been listening for a while back in November of Twenty Nineteen. We did our abundance series and is part of my own personal abundance work. I hired Rachel to help me create a mindful money plan for my life and I thought That I really wanted to share it with you guys because it's been incredibly profound for me over the course of these last three or four months and so we recorded this interview and then moments later it seems we find ourselves in this world wide cove in nineteen pandemic and some of us are impacted health wise and some of. Us are impacted financially. Many of us I think are impacted. Financially Are My yoga. Studio has been closed for two weeks and Certainly I am feeling the fear that every small business person is feeling right now and so. I think that this interview is hopefully more timely than ever. I hope you enjoy it. In general what we talk about is bringing a sense of mindfulness to our money how we might work with Creating a a wise and mindful budget that actually feels good versus fuels restrictive. But really what I think maybe as most important as that Rachel has just published a What to do in a financial emergency post on her website. And it's a really resourceful guide of steps you can take. I called her immediately when we close the studio to ask her what I needed to do for our personal budget. She gave me some really clear of things to focus on and taking that sense of control really does help alleviate some not a whole but some of the anxiety around money you know. It's been interesting because my own as you'll hear me saying this interview actually my own personal method to date of dealing with money as sort of to ignore it which. I think a lot of us do and this moment in time has demanded that we not ignore it right like so much else in our lives. This time is demanding that we wake up and attention and this is just one small way so if you check the show notes a link to that Financial Emergency Guy that Rachel has shared. I really hope you enjoy today's episode. Enjoy the bliss lowest meditation at the end it was so powerful for me and even though you know thinking about bliss lists things in this moment might feel out of reach. It is a lovely little mental vacation to take so. Give yourself that moment of. I HOPE. Joy and lightheartedness and send me some feedback. Let me know if you enjoyed this interview. I have two other interviews scheduled that I'm so excited to share with you guys and I'd love to I think. Offer one maybe every quarter every month or so depending on if you enjoy them so let me know. You can hit me up on my website. Merrill are net dot com. Let's jump into the interview. Hi Rachel I'm so glad to get to do this interview with you To will you start just by telling us a little bit about yourself and the work that you do how you came to it? Yes definitely so. He has become a relief pitcher. And so this best season in the upper levels of the minors through forty and two thirds innings any twelve walks and forty five strikeouts. Didn't allow too many runs or homers or any of that stuff? So I think air Johnson is back on the healthy path and he has converted from the rotation into the bullpen. He's not too old. So this seems like about the time he could he's been in the majors before and he's been quite terrible at it. But I think this could be as opportunity to be not quite cer- terrible at it by by working out of the bullpen. I feel like wasn't Eric Johnson. A big trade at some point. I feel like I know Eric Johnson named from a big trade. I will. Exactly what I want to say. It was a Jake Peavy trade was at a Jake Peavy trade James fields. He was traded by the White Sox with Fernando peace junior for Dame's shields and cash. Yeah. That's it was I believe if I'm not mistaken. He was the guy the Padres actually works. I did about getting at the time. And no. It was a it was like the Jake Peavy trade like eight years later. I remember I authorize the White Sox 'cause there's someone very similar in that deal. Right. Someone like really interesting between property was just always hurt. And he was coming from the White Sox who the enter of who that was is will be revealed me shortly as I as I look it up that was Aaron Parada. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's funny as you skin this list of free agents. There are the guys who you just can't believe are still playing, and it's fun to see those names again. And and guys like Mike haute is on this list and Allen Craig is on this list and Craig actually conceited really well in AAA. But it's funny. How you almost you just know the major leaguers on the list somehow, like even though very few of them played prominent roles, I'll just like no name. And I think that guy's a big leaguer. I couldn't tell you when or where or for how long and I'll look. Up and it's like he had fifty plate appearances somewhere didn't do anything. But somehow he just has like his name has the aura of major leagues in my mind. So I must have just seen it. And remembered at some point question for the panel because I was looking at that old JP trade also involved Clayton, Richard which I was surprised by how many innings do you think Clinton Richard is thrown in his career for the Padres for the Padres have you ever played anywhere else? Yes. He's been with the Padres for like eight years or something. I would guess that. He is thrown eleven hundred in eighteen innings for the Padres. Okay. Well, now this game is less interesting because you actually overshot. So what was the point you were gonna make when I interrupted you..

Protect your body. Seaman. His words so much. And I've been so blessed and fortunate to spin a lot of time with Jake and. We've had a lot of fun times together. We've helped each other some really hard times and difficult times whether that was personal loss, whether that was adversity. You know, the adversity that we discussed at the beginning of this podcast, that kind of thing. And I've never met anyone more selfless to his friends than Jake Peavy if you need it, he will do it, and I just appreciate him so much. Hope you guys enjoyed that and I'm serious by the way, there's going to be a second half of that because I have never in my life, met anyone that was more passionate about music about the evolution of music about writing music about producing music and the visceral in internal impact the music can have on shaping your life. I've never met anyone that was more passionate about it than me if there was someone who was in that sentence, Jake PV's in that sentence and so much so that he now has his own recording studio in mobile, Alabama. And some of the greatest in the world record there, and he plays music. He puts on a benefit every year where he plays music. I have an amazing story that I will save until part to where my buddy Justin Moore who's a country. Music singer calls me out of the blue one day and says, hey, man, I'm Fenway park. I'd love to see the team and I'm like, hold on. So I- techs, Jake right there right before the game. I man Justin's in town. He loved to see if he could. "When Rick Sutcliffe starts getting my ear about halfway and I'll tell him, I said, I'm coming after you've found winning the Cy Young thing, man, you know, and this is going to be fun. And he would just tell me just between me and him and I really hadn't told honestly too many people if anybody did say it don't mean a thing. If it's not unanimous pal. And so there was a laugh and I think about you talking about that 'cause not many people ever mentioned that, but that was certainly a side note that in just a deeper connection for me. So it's truly taught me who taught Greg Maddux who end up winning. It threw me. So there was a deep deep connection there. I love, especially here. It's just so Jake Peavy because you have such great reverence and we'll get into music in a little while, but you just have such great reverence for what came before you always have. And that's one thing that you and I have connected so deeply about is you're willing to take that ego and that pride and stifle it because you were told you listen to what somebody that came before you knows because they know more than you do it shut up open years. And when you think about the most dominant season you ever had and one of the. Most dominant pitching seasons the games ever seen. You go straight to Greg Maddox and Rick Sutcliffe, and that's, that's just you. It's you. Injuries real quick. I know I know that you don't have a ton of time, so I want to try to run through somebody know what I actually I actually have much harm as you would ever need. But let me I mean. I say something on that, and this is the only thing I, I, I will say this. I love the game of baseball. I will never ever. You'll never hear me as one of those guys talking bad about the game of baseball or what's going on baseball. I do think when I think about losing Kevin towers and I just don't want to lose this, this train of thought before moving onto injury, is that experience thing you talking about and what it did for me in my career. And then when I think about winning a World Series and what happened in the experience that took to get that done. I think the one place in baseball, if you look that, I just wish the game would kinda get back to a little bit is taking some cow and putting the value as as there is on everything. You know, everything is some calculated number now and into that I have no problems. That's the way people want to calculate the game. But we got to recognize and understand the fact. Act. That experience is a huge component of what makes team successful individuals successful no quoting. And I just don't think that's valued and looked at in a way that I can show you. It's been ever present in any great season that any individual had and certainly any of these World Series. If you wanna start from last year's World Series and look at and go, oh, this great group of young players incredibly talented. I hadn't seen a group of young players. Talented is that granted Houston, but who's on the bench and how did they win these World Series games by knowing Hugh Darby, just pitches who the best pitch.

Have a chance to go play in ought not to how many over said you got in the, you didn't take just a handful. I honestly, I say three offers over the last several years and you know, as far as it's not interest or calling, you know, and they're ever there never was a time where I ever pushed any other phone call other than look if this is serious. I'm thinking about getting here, but you know, when things are unknown at the end of the day, I'm not blaming anything on, you know, life's situations when you're up in the air on so many things, and you need to be certain places. You can't make other decisions. And that's just how baseball's been for me and you know, less midsummer I had about an opportunity to go. And then if I had an opportunity this year, but it's just been, you know, the right people who knew me relationship wise and says, hey, what do you got? And it's a be a relationship where they can trust me. And at the end of the day, I would never anything guaranteed or or anything like that. I would want go pitch, go by ever was to sign and during the season you go. Triple eight pitching AA until you either figure out you can do it or you can't do it and call it what it is. At that point in time we'll discuss the injuries in a minute because people need to understand what you came back from. But let's talk two thousand seven. First y'all in two thousand seven. Jake Peavy won the pitching triple crown. Aren't he led the National League with nineteen wins two hundred forty strikeouts two point five, four ERA uttered dominance. It's only happened eight times since divisional play began in nineteen sixty nine. Then your name the unanimous in Elsa young award winner. Just the tenth NFL player in history to win the Cy Young unanimously son. When you hear the left. I love. I love to hear the laugh. You know, people need to understand how dominant you were when you were on that year. What do you think about? Well, look at more is I do laugh laugh and for a couple reasons because it is when you do look back on on something that's now happened ten years ago and you go guy Lee, that was, you know, spun you, you maybe have that perspective of why it happened and can put the pieces together a little bit better. And I do laugh because you know, I think interview with Jake PB at that point in time I probably would have given you, you know, a humble answer, but I don't know if necessarily I would have been it because I thought I had it together and and and and what was happening. And we certainly did with what was the numbers, but but I tell you how that holding happened Kevin towers once again, who we just lost another great baseball man in one who I so much to in in drafted me. I was saying. Paul's who gave me a chance who set would being in the stands throughout the minor leagues, and at the end of the day called me up to pitch against the New York Yankees and and told me he believed in me just as my grandpa and my dad. The biggest gift I think they ever gave me is they told me I could do it and they and I knew when they were there, they looked at me and said, come on, we got this Kevin towers from the time I was in the Padres organization gave me that I believe in you do and you know, so that me get off on that tangent, but we all know it's beautiful..

I, I want to pick your brain on this thing. Well, good, we can do it. Let's just get started on on kind of where you sit and right now, it's been a hell of a tough couple. Two years for you. You actually stated, I saw that you feel like you need a miracle every day, and I will say that seeing that sentence hit it, it made me feel like I wasn't as engaged as should be like, I should have known these kinds of things. But let's start right there. How would you describe your life after baseball? These past couple years? Well, it's been a beautiful mess. I guess is the best way to describe it. Marty, I've had some of the worst things. I guess that that you could imagine really short of losing loved ones and and people close to just about, you know, as close people like my loved ones, you know, when you get done wrong and you, you have a ton of questions why you're in a bad place, but you know that being said and those last few years of even the darkest times, I've had some of the best times of my life to being off the road, not being Jake Peavy the professional baseball player just being Jake Peavy and being a daddy being a friend in. Just being around. So you know, the the the last two years have certainly been different than anything I've ever known as an adult they have. There's been so much work in my life that I had never known that that I now have somewhat of a grasp on that being said, I'm enjoying the journey as much as ever I'm as blessed as ever when I go back and speak on when I did say that our good buddy that I got a chance to spend some time with anybody. Listen, don't know who John Perry Barlow is goes. You'll look at just Google John Perry Barlow and look this man's life and just a man who just constantly lived on the frontier. You're going to find out he's lyricist and essayist which you know at the end of the day that may have been paid for his words entire life pretty good enough about it, right. But anyway, he was going through a tough time has since passed on, but he wrote a song with Bob where that the says, there's just one more thing. I, I gotta say. Need a miracle every day. In those dark times when we go visit kids through the foundation, there's kids in there right now right down the street from where you're at, where on that needing miracles, everyday. There's people in distress all over. You know, certainly felt some of that, my foundation, my loved ones, people all around me like yourself, knowing that your loved is the only way to get their stuff like that. And that's just how we've done it. Just so people know those of you guys listening who don't know Jake story these past couple years to be Frank. He was stolen from twenty million dollars stolen from his former financial advisor made some really bad decisions. And I wonder now that you're sort of making your way through the back side of it, and I feel like probably the acute shock of it has waned bit. What did you learn from all of that? And how did you learn that he had done this to you?.

"Yeah so the rn on getting getting loot this expansion a blizzard is trying to fix that so they're reintroducing the conquest points which will be a deterministic method to receive peavy p oriented gear every week you will be requested to earn a certain amount of conquest points win doing so you'll receive a piece gear when you're finished with a set you can move onto acquiring a higher tier of armor which is great for us wonderful people i liked to collect trans log also great for those people that like to with the gear blizzard also noted that there will be ways to skip ahead so if you're a gladiator type player to shoot for top gear and they were saying that like over watched there there will be no max procedures level but you'll just keep recruiting an account level which is a pretty cool change oh and they're also going to retool the on our talents a little bit they're going to be unlocked by level and no longer by procedure levels which means you will have all talents vailable once you get one twenty which was a little weird leveling up the first time with the honor on her talents that you didn't really have half of them acceptable to you if you're wanting to do p p especially if you came late to the game and the like the battlegrounds were out at the towers wherever you wanted to do it you can still be extremely behind people because you hadn't been working on your honor and here's somebody who's just has everything looked ready to kick your butt.

"Popularity that peavy pie has and the fact that this isn't the first headline worst dreamers gotten in trouble for letting fly a racial slur like this it's definitely something that you need to be cognizant of when you're sitting in front of the cameras there's no type of apology or reasoning for this and in in in in the actual clip the dead that we nearly had to hear she will and say oh i don't mean that in an offensive wait i don't mean it in a negative way where do you mean it in exactly but this most of the people who come and defend this are the ones who are saying you know what it was a moment a we as you as a moment of frustration out where he's really impassioned during game now here's the thing i was playing battlegrounds the other night and i had alerted the mostly frustrating moment where i just got a sweet weapon and i got run over by a teammate i was not happy and i yelled the f word and i yelled at very loud and you know what it's interesting that that's the word that came to mind first for me the right while i am i think it says something about you that it was in a different word it was in a more disparaging word and i think if we're all on us we have some of those words we have you know maybe they exist from childhood that we used to call one another there's another f word they used to be used a lot on on the playground the ninety and online lee lee and and that's one that is that is come across commonly that i've even found myself in moments of frustration and weakness uttering that word and having to correct myself and go man that's a really messed up thing to say and i think that unless you have that moment of reflection and unless you're really honest and transparent about while i don't i i don't know what that says about myself like i don't i i think everything ends up coming off his disingenuous in this in this specific case but here's the thing about pd pie is as i understand even i understand that you know when people are angry in its a moment of frustration or a moment.
