"Program to bring you a special use bulletin, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor Hawaii by air rather than grows. Those has just announced the US government responded in part by lowering confidential census bureau data. Identifying individual Japanese Americans to be released to other federal agencies during World War Two census bureau. Also, providing information about where Japanese Americans lived that information was not confidential and was used to round up around one hundred twenty thousand people of Japanese descent mainly US, citizens they were wrongfully locked up at fairgrounds race tracks and eventually promote prison camps. I remember asking my mother why we were here. She simply said because we're Japanese. I remember thinking it was not good to be Japanese in. I carried that for a long time. It was a kind of experience that was also part of the childhood of former commerce Secretary Norman Mineta he remembers asking his older brother to explain posters. He saw in their neighborhood about what the government called the evacuation of all persons of Japanese ancestry, quote, both alien end non alien alien. He said, that's you. My own government. The government of the United States of America wouldn't call me. Susan the federal government has formally apologized for actions that it said were motivated by racial prejudice in wartime hysteria. The Mineta says, he and other survivors still worried that confidential sends information could be misused again. Eileen Okada and her two sisters. Join a friend of the court brief for the citizenship question lawsuits in New York. Trump administration insists the question was added to the twenty twenty cents is to better protect the voting rights of racial minorities. Mineta says he's concerned asking about citizenship on the census was intended to scare immigrants one of the things. It does intimidate people. All I could think of who is what it was like for evacuees to be facing. And whether or not that information NPR has reached out to the Commerce Department, which oversees the census bureau and to the Justice department, which is representing the administration and the citizenship question lawsuits, both declined to comment on the friend of the court brief, but during a recent speech commerce secretary Wilbur Ross addressed the confidentiality issue. He stressed there is longstanding federal law that prohibits the census bureau. From releasing information identifying individuals until seventy two years after the data are collected by law. The census is strictly confidential strictly confidential, but Sharon Sakamoto of I lean Okada sisters remembers. This has not always been the case psychomotor was born inside a prison camp in Idaho. FM government forced her family to leave Seattle. I keep wanting the words Justice for all to work after her family was released Sakamoto says her parents continue to raise her and her siblings to respect their country and their government just because. 'cause we say Justice for all I have to still look at how we're functioning and how we're acting. I think we have to be watchful Sakamoto's says she'll be watching to see what happens to the citizenship question. It's an issue. The supreme court is expected to take on in the new year. Luang NPR news. Back on election day last month. Washington Post reporter Chelsea Jane's had a big scoop. Now, if you're thinking election day must be politics think again jeans covers baseball for the post, and her scoop was that the Washington nationals had just offered right fielder. Bryce harper. The biggest free agent contract and US sports history. Jillions has been all over breaking news on the NATs for four years now, which is why it caught our eye when we spotted a press release announcing she is about to switch beats to cover the twenty twenty presidential campaign. Chelsea James joins us now in our studio. Welcome thanks for having me, so baseball to a presidential election. How did this come about? You know, every four or five years or so they try to rotate the baseball reporters off that beat. It's pretty grueling as I'm sure presidential campaign is to say, I'm sure it's going to be get easier. So I had a new my time was up that was my fourth year. As we started talking about what was next they kind of said, well, how about Iowa in two thousand nine hundred and I laughed it off and eventually it sort of started. Well, actually that would that'd be really neat. And they were open to it. They being the head editors, and I was open to just kind of felt like a no brainer had you closely track politics up until that moment. I would say I was one of the people. I think there are many who really followed, but really kind of got sucked in a couple of years ago when the whole country kind of got sucked in a little bit more, and it's been hard not to. Yeah. Exactly politics closely. Exactly. And I think being so close to every matab in Washington and being at the Washington Post is that was happening. It was like, wow, I'm feet away from sort of being in this period in history that I'm sure people will never forget. So I figured if journalism is the first draft of history. I want to write part of it. I want to be there for it. So it was an unbelievable opportunity that they were willing to even let me think about it part of what you'll bring to it that somebody who's been doing this for twenty thirty years. Can't is totally fresh. I mean, you weren't a work. Speed in two thousand sixteen hundred seventeen. Yeah. It's really interesting as they sort of presented this to me as an option. I think one of the things that very evident as I've talked to people as much they thought they knew entering twenty sixteen and how little they really knew. So, you know, a couple of people have said to me, we need someone who can ask the dumb questions. I was like I can do that. That's something. I am. But yeah, I think there's a sense that the rules have changed. And hopefully, maybe I'll notice something that someone who is kind of in the weeds with it all doesn't or I can supplement in that way. So I at least hope that'll be an advantage talk to me about some of the skills that you learned covering the baseball beat that will translate you mentioned Iowa. So I'm guessing a fondness for long bus rides motels. Yeah. I think the travel logistics is a big part of it that, you know, my stamina is very high. I've basically lived out of suitcases for five years. So I I'm used to it. And that's a big part of the campaign trail from what I've heard and having not been there. I I can't say, but there's a lot of sort of incremental updates. There's a lot of noticing small changes in what people say and figuring out why. And I think that's similar to baseball. It's like, you might you know, someone who's just kind of dropping in might not see why this day or change is important, but it is important and presenting that day to day. What will you miss about covering baseball? I love baseball. So even just kind of being at the park. It's something I grew up with a played softball in college. It's brought me a lot of my closest friends. I'll miss that part of it almost the people you spend, you know, as I'm sure you do in the politics a lot of time with people that you cover, and that you cover people with, but I won't miss rain delays, and I won't miss reading about little injuries. While the world is burning. You know, you kind of sit there and think what am I what am I writing about a hamstring for? It'll be awfully nice though to show up at one of those. I. Spring games and think I can just. File a single line copy about it. Exactly. It'll be nice to and leave when I want Chelsea James. We wish you luck. Thank you. I appreciate it. Let's Chelsea jeans. She wraps up four years covering baseball on the sports desk of the Washington Post in January.

"Our things. Hey, everything is great. It's a little bit cold here in Florida. Listening around the country are going to say what? Yeah, it's dipping down into the high thirties here. So we'll have a cold tonight. That is cool. Yeah. A little bit of a bug in my voice tonight. But I'll do my best. What happens to the oranges and things like that? When it gets that cold. Well, typically, the oranges are going to be okay. Unless we get what's called a deep freeze where it's as this cold for let's say twenty four hours or longer. So we can have the cold at night as long as it warms up. And as long as it's just in this level. It's not know down in the teens or anything like that for any extended period of time James this is always the time of year where people. Really get down. I think it just seems to be because of the holidays. They're lonely. Do you sense that too? Yeah. You know, I have to tell you. It's it's something that it's it's just with us during the holidays. It's the happiest time of the year for some people in for other people. It's the satisfy of the year, and there's probably a lot of reasons behind that. I think one of the reasons the book I'm reading right now is called loss connections. It's by buying author by the name of Johann Hari, and he talks about in this book loss connections. His belief is that the number one reason for depression is disconnected nece. Yeah. This is where people start to become loners. They stop having relationships and friendships they start becoming isolated. And that really is the beginning stages of of someone entering down that dark path of losing all hope and considering suicide and this is the time of the year. When either you're together with a bunch of people or you're by yourself, and I'll tell you what you can't be anything darker than being by yourself on Christmas Eve or or thanksgiving, those kinds of days when you. You see all those idyllic pictures on television of the perfect families with the Christmas tree and the thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and you're sitting by yourself. How much of a believer? Are you in miracles? Well, I'm I'm a huge believer in miracles. I I have so many miracle stories I wanted to share with you want tonight that I've never shared before. And it's the miracle of me actually, even still being here, which I know I talked about my plan to kill myself, which I had planned my own suicide out three times. But in my new book, which I'm writing right now, which is called after you pray for financial miracle. I shared this story of my own life, and how I wouldn't exist today if not for some articles that took place decades before I was even born on December the sixth nineteen forty one in Pearl Harbor Hawaii, my maternal grandmother, I I'm the six goes into the hospital expecting to have my uncle who was the oldest child. She was in the hospital during the Pearl Harbor attack. If she were not in the hospital, she would have been killed because she was living in a house on the. Base. And when she returned to the house it was riddled with bullet hole. Oh my God. I would never have been born because my grandmother would have never been like a paradox. Isn't it? And then and then we move forward about ten years, and my grandfather on my mother's side. Now at this point, my mother, I believe was about eight or nine years old, and they were living in a small tiny house just outside of Chicago in about two in the morning. My grandfather wakes up suddenly for no particular reason, it has this overwhelming feeling that something is wrong. He walks down the hallway into the room where the gas heater is he sees a being lit up being the color white completely lit up seven foot tall with their arms outstretched towards the gas heater. He was completely shocked to see an angel in his house. He is soon as he saw the angel the angel disappeared and he went to the gas heater the gas heater the pilot light had gone off. And it was pouring gas the house and the angel had held the gas from coming out. Out had the angel not appeared and stop the gas leak. He would have been killed everyone in the house would have been killed. My mother would have died. I would have never been born. And then we fast forward to me at the age of five I ran through a glass window and a shard of glass went down my throat. Oh, my God came within a hair of of cutting that main artery in your neck would have died. A big shard of glass down my throat, and I would have died had that shirt of Glasgow on even a hair further, and I would have died, and and so I I look back at these stories, and then I look at me planning my own suicide three times, and I'm still here. And I know you don't believe in coincidences, and I don't believe in coincidences. And you think about the odds of all of these things winding up that I'm still here, and I didn't kill myself. And that I wrote the letter to you several years ago about my book, and you've had me on all of the people. I've heard from who have said, I Jim I heard your story I was planning on killing myself. Can you imagine? I know he's on coast to coast. You talk about time machines and going back and changing things all of the things that would have happened. If these things along the way didn't take places they did. And they're all miracles, and the fact that I'm on the phone with you right now as a miracle GM when we responded to your letter got you on. The program. How did you feel about that at that point? You know, I had this feeling that I was supposed to write the letter. It was during a time. I was praying, and as they talk about in my book, there is there are these prayer sessions that I recommend in the book where you sit down for one to two hours with yellow pads. And it just came to me that I was to write this letter to you. And I was excited to hear from producer. Tommy about coming on the show. But I'll be honest. I wasn't. I wasn't surprised because I kind of expected it because I was following what I felt that God was telling me to do and writing that letter. They know that might sound arrogant to some people I was surprised and excited. But I I in a sense, I kind of expected it to happen because that's how these prayers have really evolved in my life. When I follow these instructions, I get from God things come together. Like that. For me. Do you have in angel helping you d think? I believe that. We all have guardian angels. I don't necessarily go so far as to like know, the name of my angel or talk to my angel those kinds of things, but I do believe that God has angels around us, in fact after that encounter with that angel on my grandfather retold that story for years and never embellished or change that story. I heard it dozens and dozens of times he became literally obsessed with studying angels, including one of his favorite books was the book angels by Billy Graham. But but I I absolutely believe that if not for that angel. I wouldn't even be here tonight. All there's no question. There's something there. I mean when we get phone calls at the half year. Jim we may get some incredible stories about angelic intervention. But I'll always remember one were a truck driver called the program years ago and was talking about how he was falling asleep at the wheel. That's a no, no. And he was on some. You know, V cliffs type canyon where the wrong turn and over the cliff. He goes and he fell asleep. And he said he woke up and could see over the cliff now the truck hadn't gone off the road yet. But was heading that way. And he said, I was gone. All of a sudden, I see a hand grab my steering wheel. And pulls me back onto the road before I went over. There was nobody else in the camp. It was just me. And I mean, it just sends chills up your spine. When you hear things like that. There was another one where a woman. Came into her garage and saw her son son had tried to hang himself. And he was hanging. He was dying. He was almost to the point where he was suffocated and she kept screaming to God or angels to help her give her the strength to lift him to release the tension on the rope. So wouldn't die and she couldn't lift him us two hundred pounds, and she was laying on ninety. But she said while I was holding him trying to lift him up to give it enough slack. So he could come to his senses and let himself off. I saw in angel pick him up with me. In hype held him up were released the slack on the rope. I mean, those stories are incredible. You can't make those up. Just amazing. Just absolutely amazing. And they happen to people time and time and time again when you were in this dark situation, and you say three times what was the time period. I mean was it like every every other day, you tried it? Or what was the time period? Well, I never actually went through or actually attempted suicide, but I did make the plan to commit suicide in one of the things that people maybe don't understand until they read my book is that I was in this depression for about a five year period. And I mean, this is over the financial situation. Right, right. My own brother who had embezzled all of my money. I was wiped out here. I was a financial experts going on all these TV and radio shows. And then I wake up one morning and I'm bankrupt. All my money's gone. And he couldn't be worse. The reason why that it was my own brother, who is my accountant would embezzled my money so over five year period, I was dealing with this depression, and people would say things to me, George. They would say you snap out of it. Just you know, look forward. Go go forward. I couldn't because I was in the middle of a complex bankruptcy. I still had all of these issues on winding the failure of my business. No less. I would have loved to have moved forward. During a lot of that. But I simply couldn't I was dealing with the ramifications of the business failing, and they put me on all kinds of different medications to the point that I was so Medicated I was like a walking zombie because that was the only way they could get me to calm down was through these different medications. And and you reach a point where you have no hope for the future. And and this is going to sound terrible. But you don't wanna die. It's just that. You don't wanna live. And and you've reached this point where you don't wanna wake up in the morning, and that's where there's a hopelessness and a darkness that unless you've been there. You can never understand what that's like. And it's the most horrible feeling to to not have any hope for the future. And I think that is the last step before people commit suicide just last week had a program on suicides. And we were getting calls from people who had. Attempted in. It was I mean, it was riveting absolutely riveting the things that so many people have contemplated or have gone through. Jim. In. It's it's all over the place. In fact, there was I listened to that show. And there was a caller who requested to be anonymous. I believe from Arizona. Mhm? That that caller just that's that caller stuck with me for for the last several days this that that that young man and his desperation, I believe he was going to medical school and all these things happened. And he's in pain as a matter of fact, I just sent him some supplements to help ease his situation, and I hope they help him. Yeah. I'm telling you, it was just heartbreaking to hear that. And it's one of those things that unless you've actually been there. You cannot understand it. I know people say that they understand it. They say to you. I know how you feel you don't know how someone feels in that situation because on the outside you look at it. And you say just get up brush yourself off and move forward. You can't because you're in this loop of darkness. You literally can't get out of bed. And this is where you've you've got to change something in and look at things in a different way. How did this miracle of prayer pull you out of that darkness? Well, what I found was this. And and again it was over a five year period. So a lot of times people think the book is I I lost all my money. And then the next day, I prayed and everything was fine. Maybe that's all of of the book, but that's not the real life version. So for a long time for maybe four or five years. I was praying that I wanted everything back that I lost. And I would pray that prayer over and over and over again, and I was making absolutely no progress, and my depression was getting deeper and darker until I changed the way that I was praying praying it was sort of like, okay? This is working. What else can I do? And I reached that point where I simply just said to God. What is it? You want me to do instead of asking him? What I wanted just asking him what he wanted. And that's when I started to hear God's voice, and that's where these prayer sessions that would last sometimes two hours would leave me with pages and pages. Ages of information that I would break down on yellow pads of what I believe God was telling me to do and what God did in this whole situation was not give me back what I had lost. But actually replaced it with a life today that is better than the life that I had before and you have to be open to that you have to be open to a different direction. And in the book, I talk about this maybe you'll have to change careers because the job at the factory has gone away. Maybe you'll have to move to a different city where maybe it's more affordable to live, and and maybe give up the house. You have maybe you'll have to consider starting a small part time business or an online business. There's so many things you can do today. Going back to school a friend of mine went back to school for eighteen months..

Dipping down into the high thirties here. So. Whoa. Cold tonight. It's not down into teams or anything like that for any extended period of time James this is always the time of year where people. Really get down. I think it just seems to be because of the holidays. They're lonely. Do you sense that too? Yeah. You know, I have to tell you. It's it's something that it's it's just with us during the holidays. It's the happiest time of the year for some people in for other people. It's the satisfaction of the year. And there's probably a lot of reasons behind that. I think one of the reasons the book I'm reading right now is called loss connections. It's buying author by the name of Johann Hari, and he talks about in this book loss connections. His belief is that the number one reason for depression is disconnected nece. You know, this is where people start to become loners, they stopped having relationships and friendships they start becoming isolated and that really is the beginning stages of of someone entering down that dark path of losing all hope and considering suicide and this is the time of the year. When either you're together with a bunch of people or you're by yourself, and I'll tell you what there can't be anything darker than being by yourself on Christmas Eve or or thanksgiving, those kinds of days when you. See all those idyllic pictures on television of the perfect families with the Christmas tree and the thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and you're sitting by yourself. How much of a believer? Are you in miracles? Well, I'm I'm a huge believer in miracles. I I have so many miracle stories I wanted to share with you one tonight that I've never shared before. And it's a miracle of me actually, even still being here, which I know I talked about my plan to kill myself, which I had planned my own suicide out three times. But in my new book, which I'm writing right now, which is called after you pray for a financial miracle. I share the story of my own life, and how I wouldn't exist today if not for some miracles that took place decades before I was even born on undescended, the six nineteen forty one in Pearl Harbor Hawaii, my maternal grandmother, I I'm the sip goes into the hospital expecting to have my uncle who is the oldest child. She was in the hospital during the Pearl Harbor attack. If she were not in the hospital, she would have been killed because she was living in a house on. The base and when she returned to the house it was riddled with bullet holes. Oh my God. I would never have been born because my grandmother would have never been like a paradox. Isn't it? And then and then we moved forward about ten years, and my grandfather on my mother's side. And it was pouring gas the house and the angel had held the gas from coming. Had the angel not appeared and stop the gas leak. He would have been killed everyone in the house would have been killed. My mother would have died. I would've never been born. And then we fast forward to me at the age of five I ran through a glass window and a shard of glass went down my throat. Oh, my God came within a hair of of cutting that main artery in your neck would have died. A big shot of glass down my throat, and I would have died had that shirt of Glasgow on even a hair further, and I would have died, and and so I I look back at these stories, and then I look at me planning my own suicide three times, and I'm still here. And I know you don't believe in coincidence is and I don't believe in coincidences. And and they're all miracles, and the fact that I'm on the phone with you right now is a miracle GM when we responded to your letter, then got you on the. The program. How did you feel about that at that point? You know, I had this feeling that I was supposed to write the letter. It was during a time. I was praying, and as they talk about in my book, there is there are these prayer sessions that I recommend in the book you sit down for one to two hours with yellow pads. And it just came to me that I was to write this letter to you. And I was excited to hear from producer. Tommy about coming on the show. But I'll be honest. I wasn't. I wasn't surprised because I kind of expected it because I was following what I felt that God was telling me to do in writing that letter. And I know that might sound arrogant to some people I was surprised and excited. But I in a sense, I kind of expected it to happen because that's how these prayers have really evolved in my life. When I follow these instructions, I get from God things come together. Like that. For me. Do you have in angel helping you think? I believe that. We all have guardian angels. I don't necessarily go so far as to like know, the name of my angel or talk to my angel those kinds of things, but I do believe that God has angels around us, in fact after that encounter with that angel on my grandfather retold that story for years and never embellished or changed that story. I heard it dozens and dozens of times he became literally obsessed with studying angels, including one of his favorite books was the book angels by Billy Graham. But but I I absolutely believe that if not for that angel. I wouldn't even beat her tonight. All there's no question. There's something there. I mean when we get phone calls at the half year. Jim we may get some incredible stories about Anjelica intervention. But I'll always remember one where a truck driver called the program years ago and was talking about how he was falling asleep at the wheel. That's a no, no. And he was on some. You know, curvy cliffs type canyon where the wrong turn it over the cliff. He goes and he fell asleep. And he said he woke up and could see over the cliff now the truck hadn't gone off the road yet. But was heading that way. And he said, I was gone. All of a sudden, I see a hand grab my steering wheel. And pulls me back onto the road before. I went over. Nobody else in the camp. It was just me and. I mean, it just sends chills up your spine. When you hear things like that. There was another one where a woman came into her garage and saw her son son had tried to hang himself. And he was hanging. He he was dying. I saw in angel. Pick him up with me. Well, I never actually went through or actually attempted suicide, but I did make the plan to commit suicide and one of the things that people maybe don't understand until they read my book is that I was in this depression for about a five year period. And I mean, this is over the financial situation. Right, right. My own brother who had embezzled all of my money. I was wiped out here. I was a financial experts going on all these TV and radio shows. And then I wake up one morning and I'm bankrupt. All my money's gone. And he couldn't be worse. The reason why that it was my own brother who is my accountant who had embezzled my money sober five year, period. I was dealing with this depression, and people would say things to me, George. They would say you snap out of it. Just you know, look forward. Go go forward. I couldn't because I was in the middle of a complex bankruptcy. I still had all of these issues on winding the failure of my business. No less. I would have loved to have moved forward. During a lot of that. But I simply couldn't I was the only what the ramifications of the business failing, and they put me on all kinds of different medications to the point that I was so Medicated I was like a walking zombie because that was the only way they could get me to calm down was through these different medications. And and you reach a point where you have no hope for the future. And and this is going to sound terrible. But you don't wanna die. It's just that. You don't wanna live and and reached this point where you don't want to wake up in the morning. And that's where there's a hopelessness and darkness that unless you've been there. Jim. I in. It's it's all over the place. You in fact, there was I listened to that show. And there was a caller who requested to be anonymous. I believe from Arizona. Mhm? That that caller just that's that caller stuck with me for for the last several days just that that that young man and his desperation, I believe he was going to medical school and all these things happened. So a lot of times people think the book is I lost all my money. And then the next day, I prayed and everything was fine. Maybe that's. Of of the book, but that's not the real life version. So for a long time for maybe four or five years. I was praying that I wanted everything back that I had lost. And that's when I started to hear God's voice, and that's where these prayer sessions that would last sometimes two hours would leave me with pages and pages of information that I would write down on yellow pads of what I believe God was telling me to do and what God did in this whole situation was not give me back what I had lost. But actually replaced. With a life today that is better than the life that I had before and you have to be open to that you have to be open to a different direction. And in the book. I talk about this maybe you'll have to change careers because the job at the factory has gone away. Maybe you'll have to move to a different city where maybe it's more affordable to live, and and maybe give up the house. You have maybe you'll have to consider starting a small part time business or an online business. There's so many things you can do today. Going back to school a friend of mine went back to school for eighteen months..
