The Zach Wilson Era Is off to a Disastrous Start

"So let's talk about zack wilson. Because you mentioned him and watching him lose twenty five to six at home to the patriots and bill ballot check and bill. Bella check destroys rookie. Quarterback's he consumes them. He picks their bones. That's all stuff that we know already cleans. His teeth with the bones of rookie quarterback is what he does but we saw jets fans alex. You know throwing in the towel and it's week two. And i say that because they were literally throwing souvenir tales from the stands. And zach wilson. The four picks. I'm curious about climbing into your memory bank here because what do you. Alex smith remember about playing the colts back in two thousand and five pablo. I've definitely tried to forget this one all right but we're good. I do remember my first career. Start the number one defense at the time and like the colts were in their heyday. Payton was rolling. But that defenseman dwight free robert matt Bob sanders. i mean it was. It was a joke and yeah. It's all a terrible blur for me. Like four picks i think my rating was it like it was a disaster but i think that was a clear design i was i just turned twenty one. I mean i played only two years in college in a spread system now trying to plan their center. Probably this become this pro quarterback whatever that is and It was not good. I was definitely i. I felt unprepared. And it was a disaster and it showed. You've been a guy who had a four interception game really early after being a top. Pick your the number one overall pick of course. What do you counsel him. Hypothetically what do you stay to him after a game like this if you were to visit him. Alex smith kind of like a ghost of christmas future. What do you. What do you tell a kid who's very talented but also just had a day like this. I think exactly that. I mean i think you gotta go like for me. I just go to the third and fourth picks that he grew and pause before the snap and look look like jack. It's ten to three on this one. It's in the third quarter we got. There's a ton of football left. There's no reason to throw this ball up The way he did and then even the second one in the fourth grade. I mean i think it was thirteen to three. At that point. There is still time. Left like again I think going back to just doing your

New Orleans Saints to Use Interim Facility for First Month of Season

"The new orleans saints have picked their starting quarterback jameis winston. Jeff duncan covering the team new orleans times. Picayune sports columnist. Let me start with that season opener given the weather and we still have some time. Here is their contingency plans. If the saints can't host the packers that opening weekend jeff dan. They're working on that right now. I mean the situation is so fluid as you can imagine in new orleans. The power outages catastrophic. The entire city is still out of power. And so there's so many other priorities right now in the city beyond the football game and we stopped the sean payton this morning. Big look like the saints are going to set up shop in the dallas fort worth area. Absurd least the next month or so and he mentioned that they'd even looked into possibly playing their home games over in dallas and. At and t. stadium. I think that's one of the ideas they're not going around with. There's so many moving parts here other trying to make roster cuts today get players out of there and they got families members all in the hotel move hotel so it's a it's a crazy situation very unprecedent.

Detroit Pistons Sign Luka Garza

"Luke garza could actually become a real. Nba player that guy that one collegiate player of the year and yet nobody wanted and is drafted in the nba draft What ended up with twenty and fourteen or something. Last night he was. He was outstanding Again he has dow signed a two way deal. So luger's who does nobody been. It's he'll end up getting four The pistons but luca garza signed a two two way deal. He of course had a historic collegiate career at iowa. But he was you know by all accounts slow-footed big played near around the basket and so was of no use to people in the nba. And yet he made threes. He put up to huge double doubles and in their finale. Last night ends it with twenty one point and fifteen rebounds and got himself a two way contract so the luka garza dream is still alive after getting selected fifty second in the nba draft. He was good and he's fun. You know he's a real throwback but I i love the idea of becoming you know. Just the there's i went back and looked kevin. There's never been a guy like you by where this has happened work. I becomes the naismith player of the year in college basketball. Nobody wants him now. Not all of them have panned out. I e like the tyler hands boroughs but tolerance was like a lottery pick. I think frank mason might be the lowest and he was like at the beginning of the second round nobody. There's not even close to being selected. Fiftieth or fifty. Second whatever you've picked.

NFL Honors: Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson announced as 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year

"But it's also a weekend where some top NFL honors of the year have been announced for me. Abed Buffet of Coma Sports says there's a Seahawk player among these honors. Russell Wilson is the epitome of what you want from a franchise player. No, he's never won the M v P, But he's a great athlete and an even better person. At the NFL honors, the league recognized that Wilson's value stretches far beyond The white lines. Russell Wilson was named the Walter Payton, NFL Man of the year for his charitable acts and excellent on and off the field with the help of his wife, Sierra Wilson, and the Why not You foundation donated one million meals to feeding America's food lifeline. In October, Wilson announced their latest efforts of starting the Why not You Academy who will be a charter school set to open next fall for the award, Wilson will receive $290,000. Go towards the white, not you Foundation. 2020 was the most difficult times of history, losing a sports icon like Kobe in a movie star and Chadwick witnessing losing George Floyd. Right in front of her eyes. A modern Briana and so many others the loss of so many because of this monster of a pandemic called Covert 19. We've lost so many things, but, Dad, I wish you were here. The list of contributions include partnering with the United Way's United Last Mile campaign, which is delivered 860,000 miles across King County, along with wine that you foundation Wilson has also helped raise more than $9 million for pediatric cancer research to go along. Drew Brees, Saints rework contract to save almost $24M in cap space

"And Drew Brees agreed to a restructuring of his contract. You're probably thinking, Oh, man, he is coming back when they don't know they restructured his 24 plus million dollar contract down to the veteran's minimum of like a million and change. Why would they do that? Well because he's going to retire. And so that way it opens up that cap space and they've got that available and ready so that they sort of know where they're at. And so that, so that was just a sign an indication that Drew Brees. He's done there already, you know, going through the motions, and it's over. The case for Baylor at No. 1 over Gonzaga

"The only respectful way to begin. This episode is by recognizing that scott drew baylor bears formerly known. As bill henderson's baylor bears improved a seventeen on the season tuesday night with an eighty-three sixty nine victory at texas. They outscored the longhorns. By seven in the first half they outscored the longhorns. By seven in the second half as a result baylor otherwise known as terry eagles alma mater is now seventeen and fifteen. Double digit wins. The bears are number one at kim palm. Their number one in the net. they are awesome undeniably. Norlander your turn to talk about baylor. Are you going to spend the next few minutes showing proper respect for the first lady of baylor basketball or are you going to once again disrespect. Kelly drew got drew. Plus mackenzie payton brody. Not to mention homer and janet price and tara dana and her husband. Casey bryson anna isaiah caleb. In luke plus drew barrymore drew carey. Drew brees drew bledsoe. Dr drew drew. Gooden andrew mcintyre how are you gonna handle this moment. bryce doesn't care does care. He'd bryce doesn't care. I talk to about it. He doesn't care. How are you going to atone for the fact that you still have a number one. I mean. I think it's disrespectful at this point. Daily top twenty five and one. After what i saw last night. I got baylor number one. But you don't and you disrespect the entire through family. And every drew. She has to drew mcgarry as well. You're disrespecting them all you've got number two. I think you're the one who needs to explain himself. I actually can't explain myself. And i do get asked this every day. I saw strong joe last night trying to make the case that baylor should be number one and i let it be clear. I won't argue with anybody that says baylor should be number. One baylor at this moment has a better resume than gonzaga. Got six quarter on lindsay. Does eggs only have five. Baylor is got the best adjusted efficiency margin in the country and one of the best of all time at this point. If you wanna if you wanna put baylor number one it is fine with me. It's just. I think we've talked about this. Before i made a rule a longtime ago i will not drop number one team unless it loses the only time i made an exception i went and looked it. Up is two seasons ago. Kansas was number one in the top twenty five and one to open the season. Kentucky might have been to. Duke was in the top five somewhere and do zion williamson cameras and remember the other one started with our allies and it was. It was whatever it doesn't matter. It doesn't rj barrett and so they went out and they just throttled kentucky on opening night at bankers life. And i just. I was even conflicted. Then because keynes's is just one and it was one zero and number one and i was like i don't feel silly not to have that duke team. That just did that to kentucky ranked number one. So i made an exception to the rule. Then but i've been ranking college basketball teams for better or worse for like more than fifteen years now and i've only dropped a number one team without losing one time and that is the example.

How the Tampa Bay Buccaneers upset the New Orleans Saints to advance to the N.F.C. championship game.

"Drew brees tom. Brady eighty five years worth of quarterbacks second quarter at six three saints and then dan fish huge mistake by brief. Yeah first of all the internal pressure and second of all the physical. Play at the line of scrimmage by murphy bunting getting physical with the receiver michael thomas undercutting that outraged by drew brees. That throw was a huge tone. And that. I love the to mike evans big body in the red zone. Stay in between the quarterback and defensive back touchdown tampa bay for cash in ten six tampa ensuing drive seats trying to respond. This is james winstons. First career playoff past and dan take a look at the triggering. Yeah love the beautiful design and then trey smith leaking down the middle field. But this is really about everyone paying attention to alvin kamara. Watch the tailback in. How many blocks defenders run that way. They lead tricon smith on blocked out here. You big cat. Take great play designed by matt. Nagy that sean payton carries over to yesterday saints thirteen. Ten is the advantage there. Bucks get a field goal. So we're tied up at halftime first. Possession of the second breeze to smith again beautiful. Throw we've seen so much by drew. Brees that incites thought. Fade carry into the sideline touchdown new orleans but then later in the third dan. This play changed the entire game. It's incredible winco junior yet. Tampa new orleans wins. The right they get that slant because it's man coverage but just watch that right hand come in on that back side punch to finish that playoff for tampa bay's defense. That ball bounces right to their defender to huge turnover for them saints turnovers and the bucks cashing in. That was the story of the game. Here's brady that's leonard. Four bucks tied up at twenty cook knows. That mistake was critical. Comes another one dan. Although this one clearly seems to be miscommunication yeah really. It's really just trying to get a vertically route to evan chimera out of the backfield but what happens is never liked. Does a remarkable job of playing with vision onto drew brees patient and then no wasted movement snaps drives on that football before kamera ever turns around and drew knows that was a terrible decision. Saints third turnover leads to this brady takes it himself. Tom brady giving the bucks a thirty to twenty lead. Only the rap isn't excited about it and one last chance now. Desperation time for freeze. That is tipped in the air. And that is all she

Turnovers Doom Saints in 30-20 NFC Divisional Playoffs Loss to Bucs

"Bill. I just want to dive into it here. Because there's a lot to get to after watching the bucks. Beat the saints. Thirty to twenty so new orleans had been in tampa bay twice this season in week. One about four hundred years ago and then again in november. So what was the difference in this game vs those other two. I really simple pablo the saints. Just didn't protect the football. In the two regular season games between these teams the saints won the turnover battle. Both times there are plus three in the week one victory and then one up in the rematch. Tom brady threw five picks across those two games. Only seven in his other fourteen games. That really felt like the saints had his number and they were gonna have to flip that to win in new orleans. Well they flipped. It didn't turn the ball over the saints coughed up. Four times including three interceptions drew brees. The bucks turned the first few takeaways and two touchdowns and use the fourth to wrap up the game and kneel down. It's virtually impossible to win a playoff game. That sort of margin the saints will just sloppy in this game. Mean breeze could have thrown four or five picks. He threw an awful interception under pressure for the first one and on the same page with alvin kamara on a scene route for the second interception. The third bounced off jared cook. Who also fumbled away a completion on a drive where the saints were looking at. Go up to scores. They lost the ball and proceeded to give up seventeen unanswered points to end their season. So clearly the bucks had a formula of sorts for stopping breeze in it seemed like every aspect of this game. But it's not just that they stopped him instead. They made him look straight up terrible really often and i'm wondering how did they do that to that degree. Well i really think that todd bowles bucks defense. Look the tape from last week's game against the bears look how drew brees was playing. Look at how pal those receivers were moving and just didn't think there was anybody in that lineup who could reliably win against man coverage or beat them down field with their speed. This was especially true. After the saints lost deonte harris who had two long punt returns early in this game to a neck injury the saints did get a long touchdown but it was not with brees on the field. It was the lone snap for one jameis winston who came in and use the same trick. Play the bears ran against them last week. For a long touchdown coming across his sanders they handed to them. Refers goes to jameson mega man. Wide open trade smith at the twenty five fifteen ten five and a touchdown saints and jameis winston. What a touchdown pass against his former overall when breeze on the field it was pretty clear at the game plan was to dare him and his receivers to try and take shots towards the sidelines and get downfield and the game plan worked the bucks used heavy doses of twists and stunts upfront create pressure and then just smothered breezes receivers. I honestly it really felt the only reason. Sean payton didn't bench breeze for winston on the last drive. The game is because it was probably a last few snaps of drew brees his career.

He doesn't have the choice right now. You know what? I mean, like if he openly turned down the opening of the Dallas Cowboys head coaching job. Then I think that would be really fascinating. But you're right. Like, you said it. Well, like, what's he going to say? I mean, you know, like, the tattoo thing is really funny. And that's what kind of caught the headlines, but what is he supposed to say right now like, Sean, what are your thoughts on this job that isn't available right now. You know, I mean until until either. Jason Gerdes a contract extension or somebody else's the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. I think that rumors will exist that he wants that job. I mean they've existed for a long time for a reason. But even if at the live room or they don't comment on anyway. Right. So I don't know how prudent the, you know, the news is. But I think I think it's very entertaining. Think that he's got to fill the question about that. And this fact that he just needs to give the vote of confidence to the fans, I think that's a good way just to to to put the put this news out. Yeah. It's it's some water. And I think it's yeah. Let people run with what what the response also think, Sean. Let's let's get real here. He's saying I've got tattoos that can't be race. Rex Ryan had a tattoo of his wife. When a Mark Sanchez jersey. I mean, you know, he he got that fixed. I think still there all he got it changed. Okay. I thought in my on. Yeah. In the tattoo. She was wearing a Mark Sanchez jersey. And he got the color changed when he became the bills head coach. So the jersey was like Bill definitely changes. But like even then like the tattoos like I mean, I feel silly getting this deep on a tattoo. But I mean, do you can have that saints tattoo forever? You want the freaking Super Bowl? They're like, even if you went and coached a Jaguars at some point in your life. Like what you did in New Orleans is still amazing, and you should still remember it forever..

"We'll get his take on the all star selections. And if he thinks it's a bad thing to have the draft made public is going to draft guys. Eric Mangini continues to join us. What did you think of how Sean Payton coached in the NFC championship game? Some of the some of the play calling. Did you do you have any negative reaction to it? I thought overall he he did a good job. I thought Wade Phillips nice show of taking away some things that were problem in in the first game. And and he made some adjustments to what they're doing with with KOMO or out of the backfield. They started to push them out of the backfield. You know, the the call we we've all talked about the call over and over again, and I get it. And we've all been frustrated by calls that were either missed or made that affected our lives. But that's that's part of what happened and maybe they'll change the rule. The only concern I have is they had a chance to go win the game. They had kids play defense. Then they got the ball. I just like New England did and overtime. So they had a little bit higher percentage of an opportunity to win the game. And they didn't. And then they had a chance to play defense again. And the Rams kick a fifty seven yard field goal. So you just wonder if that call got everybody's so preoccupied with with that moment that they weren't able to move on to all the other moments that would have given given them opportunity to even have to worry about about the call. Look I've been critical, and I think other people have as well of not running the ball. First second third down to take away the chances for the Rams take away their timeouts. I know they checked out of a run. On first down and even the past which is a pass interference that boat. Wasn't that both onto the inside she'd been during the outside? He here's what I'll say about that is over and over again. We celebrate Coty takes chances. Remember in the Super Bowl kicked in onsite kid. He takes chances. So to criticize the guy for putting the ball in his best players head in drew Brees is hands any critical moment, I have a really hard time with and even if they'd run the ball three times, there's still would've met I think fifty seconds left in the first game. If they don't get a first down you are allowed to get a first down when you're on the football. You are and you're allowed to get stopped and you're allowed to get a penalty. And you're allowed a lot of bad things can happen. But in the first game there are twenty six seconds left in the first half. When the Rams got the ball back and they walked down and kick a field goal. So to say that they couldn't do that in fifty seconds. Well, that's not true. We we saw it happened in the first game. So I just I think it's very easy after the fact that say he should have done this. He should have done. That but he put the ball in his best players hands. He checked out of a bad play into a good play. And look they got a penalty. It should have been a penalty. So to criticize him for that. I I don't feel good about. I don't love the way things were handled after after eight moments fair. Breeze. Hasn't looked the same is have we reached that point with Brees? Or is it a year the attrition of a season? And that's what happens with older players. They wear down at the end of the year like it breathes was not nearly as dynamic end of the year as most people think breeze should be well, this this this offense was was shaped a little bit differently. They had two running backs that we're really effective. And it was it was almost run I approach, and I I didn't see breezes performance later in the year as as a as a decline, I think sometimes the the scheme dictates, you know, more running than than passing, and it may may look a little bit different than what we've expected from that offense. But I don't think it was different because his performance had declined substantially would you consider the Cowboys if you're Payton? Why I I don't know why you hit hit hit reset with a better younger roster..

"It was so many things that could have it in that moment. And it's the reason Rams are going to the Super Bowl team. Hang around. Yeah. Let them, hey. Because they let us hanging around. I mean, we. Went up playing great in the first half. They couldn't hear the office. Was you could tell it man, the offer them because you really couldn't hear in that statement. I say we had we went in thirteen ten and half. I said, oh, we don't win this game. I think it's going to try to we don't want to lose it. We don't wanna lose it. And that's exactly what happened. I think a point accurate member. Who said I think eagle plays a role in this all this hype around sham McVeigh, and Sean McVay as the next Sean Payton, I think some of that crap into Sean Payton, you're thinking in terms of there's a conservative way to go ahead and win this game. But you want to deliver the Dag try to bury them try to try to marry instead of just taking wasn't there and was given because when you look at it Now Sean McVay won the game with his fake punt early. He did undermine the whole. He is the next Sean Payton, and maybe the next Bill Belichick. I think ego played a role in. And I might you made the point. And I think it's indisputable. We disagreed on one thing when you said that we should have went for the touchdown the fourth and one you take the points. Tell you the point you take you take it away win. He would conservative. We did that and week nine. We didn't take the points and wind up losing because it that put us in a bad situation. We would have been up three. Instead, we're going down three and losing by ten. So you you'll stay off Willie. I love. I love. The why family welcome. How you Simone on Friday night. "This section of the podcast. I really liked to tell you a little bit about what the meeting was like between drew Brees and Sean Payton in which they go over the game plan, and it's like to John Nashes from Beautiful Mind talking to each other and talking a language that I certainly couldn't understand the same way. I would not have been able to understand John Nash and his mathematical formulas, but what I thought what I thought was was interesting overall and just a little bit of inside football here. During the course of the evening, obviously, there's some sensitive stuff that's being discussed and exactly what they're going to do in the game plan. I thought it was amazing. How free they were with their information. The saints coaches and players, and and I think that one of the reasons is that they're going through this football nomenclature so fast. And it just you know, and they go, and they go, and they go, and it's a language like, they're speaking Flemish, and I just can't understand a damn word. They're saying, but the interesting part of it. I think is and I think the reason why Peyton isn't worried about me leaking anything anybody. I mean is what what would I know when they say snug left Y fly P thirty five stab dog f rail. Everybody got that. And everybody says, yeah. And. And so, but I I don't know what any of those any of those words are symbols or herb reveal mean. So basically, I think there's no need to worry about it. I could hear that all day. But it's like if I was sitting in a room for the first day hearing, some different language, obviously, I'm not gonna have any idea what they're saying. So I found that to be really really interesting. The one thing that will tell you before I get into the breeze part. That was very interesting is that Peyton is. Just this crazy mad scientist when he's thinking of plays to this point. He started thinking he was said he was doodling Thursday night. And he started thinking why do we have to have a quarterback in a formation? Why can't we have a totally empty backfield? No quarterback, no running back. And obviously at some point. There's going to be somebody there to take snap. But why can't we have a totally empty? Backfield where we'll have five ofensive linemen. And what I'm gonna do is. We're gonna have a bunch formation on the right with two wide receivers and our backup quarterback tastes them hill who also plays sort of jack-of-all-trades role form on the left hand side. We're gonna have to wide receivers in drew Brees. And so we're gonna come up to the line of scrimmage and the play clock will be going down twelve eleven ten nine. And I asked him about it. And he said now my goal is for there to be eight Philadelphia Eagles all looking at their their defensive play collars, Malcolm Jenkins. My goal is to have them. All looking at Malcolm Jenkins saying what do we do? Because you know, if you don't have a quarterback are running back back there. What do you do? And so and I said, okay. Well, what do you do? And he goes, well, eventually, either tastes them hill or. Breeze is gonna come back. He's gonna take the snap. And do whatever the design was when that happened tastes them hill was gonna come back, and he was going to take the snap for max the center, and he was going to run around right end. And hopefully run at their target of the day. Sidney Jones a cornerback who they don't think tackles will. So anyway, I thought that was sort of the darndest thing I've ever seen in my life. I'm watching this play. And I am saying somebody forgot to play quarterback there. So that was that was pretty pretty interesting. So let's let me go to the the meeting now between breeze and Peyton that. I thought was so I thought one of the really really interesting parts of it is just the realisation that a coach are smart coach is now. Not an autocratic, man. A smart coach is a bit of a democrat. He's a bit of a collaborative person much more. So than you would think in the days of Lombardy, and and even in the days of Bill Walsh. I once was able to sit in on a week of the Green Bay Packers in it. And I do remember I in the Saturday meeting that Brit farve in Mike Holmgren had. Honglin said, here's the place..

"It really is amazing how fragile those moments were, and what a foundation you and drew Brees have been able to build and build upon at the time, Sean Payton. Here on the rich Eisen show knowing it's your first shot at being hce in this league like this, right. Knowing what system you wanted to bring in scheme you wanted to bring. What did you see in breeze that you thought this is my guy? Well, there were two or three traits that you just couldn't. You couldn't ignore smart, tough, accurate bedded, followed him, man all through college, and you knew. That he had the the grit, some of those other essential things that we're going to help him in in his re recovering his rehab. In other words, if he couldn't recover from the shoulder injury, then it's probably likely that no one would have been able to because it was something that there was no precedent relative to the injury he had. It wasn't like, well, he had an ACL. This is the here, the percentages, or he had an ankle or whatever. This was a fully torn rotator cuff shoulder injury for right handed passer, so all those intangibles, but but the athletes ISM, the intelligence and the accuracy. I think we're things that it stood out in. You know that the challenge for us was, you know, recruiting, you know, with the city that was still having you in Chambas. And it's interesting. We had Reggie Bush on yesterday coach where he said that he didn't. He wanted to get a trade to the to the jets and instructed his. And that you were having none of it and told his guy Oranje was as we all know legend in the NFL and the football world, you told him that's not happening. It's what he said. It wasn't quite that. That wasn't quite the language. But it was all happening within a month and we were able to secure drew and move move towards the drafts then with a little bit more freedom with that, pick at number two in hopefully take the best available player in. So as you start getting ready for that process and Reggie fell, that first night fell. I mean, you know, obviously Mario was taken by the Texans. Now we're on the phone with with him and they were making this election and orange his marketing guy. So it's rare that he gets even chance to get on the phone conversation. But if anyone doesn't know Mike Ornstein, he'll find a way to get on the conversation in any number, forget the condescending coach, you know, look, I know you're gonna do great job in this league, but the kid doesn't wanna come and play there. So you need to get this trade to the jets. Worked out. He went on for about five minutes. It's and then quickly we put that to bed..
