"Here's schlereth and Evans. Here we go, good win for the nuggets on the road playing without Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray does not matter. They put 7 players into double figures, good team win for Michael Malone who also got a strong performance from a newcomer Thomas Bryant. Yeah, I mean, for his first real game with us, you know, he goes four or 5 from the field ten points in 14 minutes. That's pretty good production. The challenge I'm going to have for him is, you know, he only had one defensive rebound as our back of 5, we need him to be a guy that's clearing the glass and igniting our break with his outlet passes, but I think overall for his has been a whirlwind for that young man to go out there and help us the way he did tonight I thought it was tremendous knowing there's only going to get better the more comfortable that he gets. Reggie Jackson also who they signed as a buyout player. He also did not play. So you're without three rotation guys. Two starters, another rotation guy, and you still go on the road and get a win over a decent Miami team that you know had this game circle because the nuggets beat him earlier, not that long ago in the season here. And yet the nuggets get the win. 40 and 18. It's incredible. Good for them. And good for them for, you know, bouncing back, what was it that the magic they lost? Yeah, and then they bounced back right away, beat Charlotte, and then this stuff went. Go to Miami. That's a good, that's a good professional win because you're shorthanded. You're in Miami, you had an off day before the game. I saw some photos of Nikola Jokić had his young family with him, a nice dinner he was at, and you know how it is. It's only one game left, it was the last road game before the all star. It would be real easy just to say right, let it go. You know, we got a 5 game lead in the Western Conference for best record. But no excuses, they go out, they submit a professional effort, get the win. Very likeable team. They are very likeable team. The Joe grass, his family, let's go to dinner. You know what he says? Let's ride. That's right. Next round. Phone's highland. Man. But I'm trying to stick up for your bones. I understand you're young and you're immature and I think the nugget should have just buried you for the rest of the year and then come back and revisit this next year and try to make it work instead of just dumping you for two second round picks, but man, he first he gets the flight out to LA he's on a private plane and he's like, ah, he's posting video like this is this is the way you should treat people. Okay, what the nuggets didn't treat you well. Then yesterday took a clearly thinly veiled shot at Jamal Murray. They had definitely different talents. Joker is more of a passer and, you know, he does everything, but I feel like, you know, PG and I'm doing the same thing, but it's definitely different type of styles, you know, PG and M or, you know, feel like they more scorn in the Joker is like a passing and then if he has to score he has to, you know, but uh, it's gonna be your great experience, you know, over here, but also it was a great experience playing with Joker as well too. You know, it's two guys over here. It was a phenomenal talent and, you know, there was one guy who was a phenomenal talent as well. When did they play the clippers again? Wasn't it Murray that came out? Basically said, hey man, we don't need no wine in a crime. We need everybody to be kind of doing the same deal, right? Now, if bones could get back on defense as quickly as he backpedaled from the statements yesterday, he quickly took to social media and said, ha, me and Jamal were good, posting pictures of he and Jamal. God damage is done. Do they play the clippers again? 'cause if you can tell me there's a healthy Jamal Murray for that game. He might put up a 50 burger. Clippers, clippers, clippers, no more clipper games. No more clipper names? No more clipper games. Don't even hold on. Yeah, yeah, hold on, hold on. I was looking at the clippers. I was looking at the sorry, I was looking at the clippers schedule. Yeah, they play here. They play here, here. February 26th. Circle it baby. All right, all right. Healthy scratch. Yeah, right, DMP. Load management. Load management. Next on the morning brew. The banged up avalanche with a rematch tonight against Tampa. Boy, the abs are banged up, so this is the update. Cal a car, Eric Johnson, Pavel Franco, Josh Manson, Gabe lander skog, all out. They're all out. I knew EJ took a puck to the shin, right? No timeline for my car, Johnson, francos, and Landis goggles. Concussion. He took that shot from Jeff Carter in Pittsburgh, first game after the all star break. It looked like a cheap shot to me, was not called a penalty at the time. The archaic NHL disciplinary board that there is still an element within that discipline board that still feels no, we must cling to the tradition of hockey. When men were men, and toughness. Oh, brother. It really is. It's a dinosaur way of thinking in a time where more and more leagues go out of their way to protect their best players. And in this case, some fourth line guy like Jeff Carter could take a run at Kim a car and nothing happens. Nothing happens. You can say all you want about the NFL and how they treat their quarterbacks and I know it annoys people at times, but they understand their moneymakers and they're going to protect them and kale McCarthy is one of your 5 best players in the league. You got to protect these guys. Well, that's where the frontier justice comes in, right? Shouldn't you go after their best player? You should. You should, but even then that doesn't really exist today either.

MacKinnon lifts Avalanche past Kraken 2-1 in SO

"Colorado completed a three and O road trip by taking a shootout from Seattle two one, mikko ranton was asked to grade the trip on a scale of one to ten. Probably ten, you know, three wins, three wins, so can go much better than that. So we rest two days and kind of finish finish the homestead before the break. In the shootout, Pavel Franco's brushed aside all three shots he saw and Nathan McKinnon scored the only goal. The abs have won 5 in a row, while the kraken have dropped three of four. "To make martial art with happy. So that's what we're doing this morning. Listen up. I'm up already. Yeah, you'd be up anyway. You'd be up anyway, right? So might as well be in here talking about all things Denver sports, all things, Broncos coaching search, Jim Harbaugh, staying in Michigan. Broncos meet with Sean Payton today. Having missed out on Harbaugh, do the Broncos, Greg penner, George Payton, Condoleezza Rice, do they have to close the deal? With Sean Payton or are you and I say you you Orlando and all you out there listening? Are you warming to the idea of somebody else? I don't think it's necessarily a situation where you have to call the deal. You have to identify that the best coach for the Democrats moving forward for at least the next half a decade. I truly believe that Mexico comes in here. The first two years, some people say argue against him and say, just one year. But I believe that the next two years are going to be dedicated to Russell Wilson. The next year will be dedicated to George Payton. So you have a decision immediately after the first 365 days that you're in the building or are you keeping George Payton around or you moving on for a different direction with GM and then after your second 365 days, are you keeping Russell Wilson? And if you decide to go in a completely different direction from Russell Wilson, now I believe that any head coach that gets a job should get three years. So it's a 5 year deal for this next head coach, just like Russell Wilson got that brand new contract last summer. That was a 5 year deal. This next head coach is going to get 5 years from now. So they get one up. Hey, Russell Wilson got all these guarantees. I'm the head coach that you're telling. It has to come here. I know that it comes with scrutiny this job because you have to win you have to win right now. The city, the state, national. Expects this football team to do a lot better than it just did. So with that being said, I don't think it's a situation where you get Sean Payton on the phone and you got to get a deal done immediately. You have to make sure that you're not in this situation a year from now or two years from now, Mike. And that's why making sure that you do all the interview process. You cross all your teas you got all your eyes. If you, if you identify Sean Payton as your head coach, it doesn't matter whether you do it today or two weeks from now. If you do it two weeks from now, at least you interview all these other head coaches and you know for a fact without a doubt, then neither one of these guys you trust in and you're not just saying, hey, you know what? We're doing this out of reaction right now. That's my big fear. It's about reacting. And my goodness, gracious, one of the chess pieces that's got taken off the board and Jim Harbaugh. Now, this is the only piece left. We have to make sure that we get this deal done. So one of the ideas that a, you know, we love Sean Payton, but you got to give up a lot in a trade with the saints, maybe not, as Payne himself told Colin cowherd yesterday. I think each team would be a little different. Mickey Loomis and I've talked already about it. I think ultimately the compensation for the saints would be later first round pick. Okay. But each team's got different ammo or different pick selections and it could be a future one maybe where you have to throw in something. I say this because I know Mickey well and I heard him talk the other day and he was right on and I think I am too. He's got a job to do as a general manager with the saints in he'll get the right compensation and I'm sure the team if it gets that far will arrive at it and it's probably this year it would probably be a mid to late first round pick. I would say. Mid to late first round, that's exactly what the Broncos have after the deal with Miami and Bradley Chubb and getting the San Francisco pick. That's going to be a late first round pick. But it's going to be a first round pick and so the idea that you're going to have to give up multiple ones or a first a second and a third for Sean Payton. It doesn't sound like it's going to be that crippling of a deal anyway. So if I had told you back in right before the trade deadline, hey, would you trade Bradley Chubb for Sean Payton? Of course everybody would say yes. So if this is what the asking price is, then that take that off. Take that off the board as an obstacle. Now it's just a matter of, is it a fit here? Is it a fit with the Broncos and Payton? Is it a fit for Peyton? Does he look at the Broncos as a fit? That's all it is. I think we can now remove the draft compensation as a hold up. Yeah, and that's a great thing for the Denver Broncos, right? When you start hearing Sean Payton out of his mouth itself where obviously he trusts that organization and what the relationships he's developed for being in that building for a decade and a half. Out there with the saints, but when you're able to get this information behind the scenes, if you're Greg penner, you should have a nice smile on your face because now I truly believe in my statement even more. Then you don't have to overreact. You don't have to go up there and say, oh my goodness gracious, you blew us away in the interview process today. We have to move forward with this. No, you still have to ability now to continue to listen to all your candidates. Listen to all options when it comes on Russell Wilson, because yes, Sean Payton could be the guy that you identified, but somebody else could have a better plan. As far as how to turn this thing around. And when you're here on late first round pig, I'll sweeten the deal for you because this is what I like about this situation. Now you can really go into it and say, hey, we still need a week or two. Okay, we come back somebody else is in the race. We'll give you our late first round pick, but next year we'll give you a conditional pick. If the Broncos win 8 to 9 games, we'll give you our third round pick in next year's draft in the 2023 draft as well. Or sorry to 2024 draft, right? We win double digit games and there are playoff teams. I'll give you a second round pick. Because now the compensation is nowhere near what we thought it once was going to be because remember Gruden, two first round picks, two second round picks, $8 million cash, and you're thinking that that's going to be some of the deal with shopping. So this is actually good news for the DevOps. I never thought that the asking price would be that it would be Gruden esque. I thought it would definitely be probably a first round pick plus. Maybe a mid round pick, but I never thought we'd be getting into the idea of multiple first round picks. Because what you heard from Peyton is, yeah, Mickey Loomis has to make a deal. But it is kind of dependent on where Sean Payton wants to go. Because if you say, well, hey, Sean, I know you don't want to go to Carolina, but Carolina is offering the best deal. Then Payton just says, see ya. I'll go back to the TV book for another group. So it really is dependent on who and where Payton is interested in going, then work out the deal with that team. And I think it's a coincidence that he was talking about a mid to late first round pick when that is indeed the pick that the Broncos have. Morning brew is coming up next. Avalanche beat the red wings. You know there was a time when everything stopped when the abs in red wings played. Is this still a rivalry? We'll tackle that next. It's time for your morning brew, grab a cup of Joe and get caught up on everything you need to know. Here's schlereth and Evans. Hey, that team meetings seem to have worked as the avalanche have responded with a couple of really strong winds. As they beat Detroit yesterday 6 to three, Jared Ben are turning to Frankie Pavel Franco's between the pipes. I thought he was really good. You're probably would like to have the point shot that beat him from the blue line back, but he probably made three or four big saves before that nagin that could have easily been goals against. So I thought he was great, but I just played him because he had, you know, he was so sharp the other 90s get back into the swing of things. He seems to be getting better and better and like I said, now we should have two goals that we can play an

"So Jeremy, when the pandemic hits in 2020, how did that affect the whole emergency backup goaltender economy? What it meant was that you had suddenly all these situations in which, you know, it wasn't about injuries. It wasn't about goalies getting injured during games, but it was about teams not having the goalies able to play because they were in COVID protocols, which was happening quite a lot. And if you're getting tested all the time, and if you test positive, then you're out for a certain number of days. Typically what you do is if you have a goalie, one of your two goalies, you know, on your NHL team, when are the protocols, then you're calling up goalies from your minor league teams. But that wasn't always an option because they might not be nearby, or they might be in protocols too. There were periods of time where the top four goalies in an organization were in protocols or three out of four and so suddenly emergency backup goalies were in much greater demand than they had ever been before. And so as rosters everywhere are in just utter disarray, chaos is raining throughout sports and the NHL in particular is seeing all of these new strange faces at all these positions. You find one of these faces to follow. This guy, Dustin Smith, Dustin bones Smith, excuse me. And what is Dustin bones smith's deal, Jeremy? So Dustin bohn Smith is a longtime E bug in Nashville for the predators whose day job is working as a baggage handler at the airport in Nashville. That was all me. I've been working for southwest for a little over ten years. Now, the great thing about it, it really has this flexibility that allows me to live this hockey lifestyle. This past December, Colorado starter, the avalanche starter, Darcy Kemper, he enters into the protocol, which means their backup, Pavel Franco's becomes the presumptive starter, which means they need a backup now in Dustin Boone Smith. Gets the call. I got word. We need you to come down to the rink and get dressed for Colorado and, you know, obviously right away, there's a lot of nerves. So that night, the avalanche in town, and Dustin Smith goes from his job as a baggage handler at the airport to dressing and warming up for the Colorado avalanche. That night in Nashville. How is he feeling at this moment? He's experiencing this the way that you or I might. As an out of body experience, you know? Things were kind of moving so fast that, you know, in the moment, they're just, they're just hockey players, and then after the moment's over and looking back and reflecting on it's like, man, there was Nathan McKinnon, there was kale mccart. I imagine it's sort of like, you know, did I just get dosed with something? What am I hallucinating right now? Yeah, that's it. The shift can't be more drastic, can't be more sudden. It's like, go get your gear, put it on, and now you're warming up with some of the best players in the league. Now, look, Smith didn't get into the game, but that's one of the stories of the E bug in the pandemic era. You are actually part of the team for a day or a couple of days because all the guys were paying to do this job are in the protocols. The emergency aspect of this has become far more global, but you mentioned a word there, Jeremy. The guys who are getting paid. And so I have an important and arguably very overdue question at this point, which is, what is an E bug make when they get called into action like this? I don't know how often you guys use yiddish on this show, but when I hear when I hear the question posted, now I can't think of anything but bupkis. Nada. Zilch. Nothing. They get tickets. Now, I can't speak. I didn't survey every team in the league. I admit, but the guys we spoke to said typically, they get two tickets to the game. So you can bring a buddy. You can bring a date, there are some rules. What, by the way, what a date that would be. It's like, sorry, honey. Yeah. I gotta go take care of something. And then you reemerge, right? On the edge. Yeah, and then after the game, yeah, I just had to play a few minutes in the third period. So you get to go to the game and that's really the big draw and being associated with the organization. It's typically an organization, you know, that you are a fan of that you grew up cheering for. And you get meal money, at least in the case of Kyle Shapiro, one of the E bugs we spoke to works with the Devils, you get the option of eating the media meal. She was quite impressed with. I have to say, I've not had the same experience with most Kyle meals. My sweet sweet pile. You have so much to learn. Four Kyle. But there is a rule though. You're not allowed to drink. It's the opposite of a drink ticket. It's an anti drink ticket. Right. You're not supposed to be drinking. But Jeremy, it does occur to me here. The ebug clearly has all of the leverage in this equation. Yeah, and I mentioned Kyle Shapiro and I spent some time with him down in Jersey talking about the situation and when his name was called. When the Devils needed him and by definition, they had no other options, I asked him about his negotiating position. In terms of negotiation, you kind of had them over the barrel. And they needed, did you make any demands? I did not. I think I was in such, you know, looking back on a 2020 hindsight, right? You had them at wit's end. They needed somebody. I probably should have asked for a little bit more than nothing, basically. So Kyle Shapiro is one of these guys like Dustin bone Smith, who is needed. He's needed the day before in practice because guys are in protocol, so he spends an afternoon practicing with the team and the guys are still in protocols. So now they need him to actually go on a road trip. Now, this is a strange situation for e-bike because it's supposed to be each arena has one ready to play for either team, but he's no longer really the E bug. He has to be the backup goalie. He's just the bug. He's just a bug for a game. So he's going on a road trip with the Devils to Long Island. Literally

"Here's schlereth and Evans. Feels great. Yes, I mean, you know, sometimes you just win in different ways. It didn't look like we had a lot of energy tonight, didn't look like we had our best stuff. We weren't skating as well as we cared. We weren't executing the way we could, but I will say our guys continued to grind in a lot of different areas that takes a belief that you can still win the hockey game because that was a really tough and difficult game for us to play. That's what championship teams do. They find a way to win when they're not at their best. Yeah. Great pictures. Find a way. I was just thinking the same thing. Find a way to win when they don't have their best stuff. And the avalanche last night, you just heard it from the coach, got outplayed by a wide margin. Got outshot 48 to 15. 48 to 15, but Pavel Franco Frankie stolen for the abs as they beat Carolina again a team that was looking at these two matchups with the abs in the last ten days as a measuring stick for them and he has beat him twice. It's amazing. I mean, that is exactly what it takes when you don't play. You know you're a good team. You know you're an exceptional team. When you don't have your best stuff when you, I mean, because you can't play whether it's hockey, you can't play 82 games or baseball one 62 or football 17. You can't play 17 games on adrenaline. On a motion, it doesn't work that way. You know, you're going to have those games where you just got to you just got to rely on grit and toughness and that's one where they, I mean, first off, Frankie. I'm a Frank. Well, the thing about Frankie, here's how lucky the abs are to have this guy, because he's a backup goalie that completely understands and is comfortable in his role, and he's, he's the perfect guy to rely upon when you want to give Georgia a break, you put Frankie in there, you know what he's capable of? Heck, you know what he's capable of if you have to turn in a pinch in the playoffs. He was outstanding for them. As there are so lucky to have that guy and he proved again last night why. Huge. Next, on the morning broke. Yeah, I mean, I think that's one of those deals where, you know, most coaches that come into the profession aspire to do to achieve that and it's definitely very flattering to great honor, but at the end of the day, I'm not worried about that, you know. My feet's in the ground. I'm worried about trying to beat the Raiders. Ejiro? Eva ro. Jerry varro. We're trying to get this right. I'm going to talk to him today. And I want to nail it. Well, why don't you ask him? Well, I already got it from the website, but yeah, I'll talk to him about it, but I just want to be. Yeah, I don't want to come in there and butcher it. I just want to I'll probably just say, what's up, brother? Yeah, do whatever you do when we're on the road together. When you see somebody and they come up to you. And they say, they say, hey, stink, how you doing? And you have no idea who they are. How long have you been? Mark does the same thing. He does the same thing all over again, where he reaches out, he grasps the guy with his right arm. And then kind of reaches around some on the left arm. Hey. Dude, dude. How you doing? You good? You help me? That's always the same. You're good, you're healthy. And then he uses me. This is my part of Mike Evans. And then you're gay. Mike Evans. What's your name? How do you catch your name? Yeah. And he gives his name and then I watch. All right, Mike. Good to see good. It's a game we play. It is a game. It's just we've got it down. Yeah. We've got it down. So each era, junior ever. Very easy. The gero river. If you like a gyro, I'm getting caught in The Rain. If you're not into health food, you are in two champagne. Yeah. I don't think that I think you just missed it right there. I'll meet you at the valiant tomorrow, noon. Stop it. All right, sorry. Anyway. That was close. Kim responding to head coaching rumors. Is it just me on this? Is it just me Friday? Is it just me or if this guy is in demand? As a head coach and you already have him here and you have serious doubts about whether or not Hackett's gonna be here. Why wait on elevating this guy? Because I've heard it suggested that you don't want to take the one part of your team that's good and mess it up by having him have to focus on being a head coach. Sorry, if you want this guy to be the head coach, if you think this guy could be the head coach here. Get him reps now. Get him a half season worth of reps now 'cause the last thing I want going into next year, if they do make a coaching change, is yet another first time head coach. He's got a point. Get the reps now. And who cares? If it hurts the defense a little bit. Well, I don't care. I will say this. It's like putting in your backup quarterback for two games left in the season. What are you really going to find out? Because number one, you stink. Well, no, that's why you got to do it now. That's what I'm saying. Until there's two games left, you're not really going to learn that much. So if you're going to do it, you got to do it. And again, I've said this a million times. Now you have to go over there, you know? How's it going, you know? I don't want anybody to get fired. I don't. I want hacker to have success. I want it to turn around. I want it to flip around. I believe that he's a good coach. I mean, I think there's some things that get overwhelming when you take a new position and you're not quite ready to understand all those things. But if you're going to do it though, you got to do it. You got to do it sooner than later. Next on the morning brew. He's overthinking things to be completely honest. We talked about the inside the 20 punch and he knows that he can't go catch the ball on the 5 yard line four yard line. I think that played a factor in some of his decisions on Sunday. He was awful, by the way. Duane Stewart's talking about Montreal, Washington. Yeah. When he took that first fair catch and he faked the staircase at the 19 yard line and let it hit, I don't know. 12 or 15 and then bounced to the four and the very first part of the game, I think. Dude, businesses, and it used to be, it used to be when I first came in the league, it was at set yourself at the ten, if it goes over, let it go. But now you can't. You're going to set yourself at the 5. These guys are so good at spinning the ball. They're like, I mean, they're like big time professional golfers. They're so good at getting it to stop. Now it's one of those things where you only you only if it's beyond the right of the 5, that's when you let it go. Beyond that, you got to catch a damn thing. Next on morning brew. Yeah, I mean, there's got to be an urgency and I challenged everybody in the locker room, including myself and the coaches. Every individual has something to work on and get better at. Again, just extremely disappointed right now. Cram it up your cram who the floor. Wow. We thought the packers had their breakthrough aha moment when they beat the cowboys the other day, but instead they turn around and lose at home to the Titans, Titans look great, packers look awful, Aaron Rodgers looks washed. Who once again last night showed their championship medal, went into an environment, New York City, Madison Square Garden, gets a rangers team that has aspirations themselves are going to the Stanley Cup. Crowd was into it, crowd was ready to go, Alexander Georgia, the former backup ranger goalie, going up against his old team. Did he get a video tribute? He did get a video trivia. He did. Yes. I made a note. I made a note of that, by the way. I've got a video tribute. How soft are the people in New York? And by all accounts, Andre burakovsky got a very nice video tribute when he came back on Friday. With the kraken, so you cold hearted SOB. You need to get over these video tributes. And embrace them. I'll tell you what. I mean, this is the issue that we got going on in our country. That's the problem right there. Video here. The fall of the American empire. The other thing is, is lack of consequences. Right. Okay. Yeah, there we go. No, seriously, when you were growing up, if you walked into a group of people, right? And you started talking smack about somebody, you had to be prepared to get your ass kicked. Correct. I've been worked that way anymore. You can say whatever you want. There are no consequences anymore, right? Because we've got to be kind and gentle and everybody I mean, the you want to go down this road. Just telling you. This is just part and parcel of what's going on right now. Now it's a video treatment. If you had a cup of coffee and took a dump at the team facility, you get a video tribute nowadays. They did. I don't understand. I don't understand that. When you go back to call Washington a backup, he was a backup. Gorgi was a backup goaltender. Yeah? A backup goaltender. Yeah? But he won games for the New York rangers. He was a doctor. He was a backup goalie, which means he was very popular. It was one of the goalie is always very popular. One on 5? Oh jeez. I mean, you just seriously. Can you just allow a little bit of joy into your life? I just don't. What is wrong with you? Do the bills come in this year so we can put a video attribute up for case Keenum, I mean seriously, seriously, genome. We are softer than butter. It's now. It's harmless. No, it's not normal. It's harmless. No, it's not our video trips. It's not hard. It's harmless. It is deteriorating the fabric of America. God. Video tribute for backup golden dramatic. Goaltender. My God. So if Pavel Franco, when somewhere else, Frankie, Frankie, good old Frankie. And came back with that team and was starting that night against the avalanche of ballerina. A nice little video tribute to Frankie wouldn't be well received. Of course it would be. Bob, you can get a little Frankie chant going. The lord has some help us. Help us. Really? You would think. You're going to lose. I haven't even looked at the text line. You're going to lose on this one, my friend. Listen, I hope I do. I hope that if I lose, that's fine. But it just goes to show you how soft we are. All right. If you have heightened your heart, I do have hate in my heart. Where were we? I don't know, but the video tribute thing has got to, okay, I can die show what they're made of once again. They are clearly the model franchise in town. What can the other teams? What lessons can the other teams learn from them? And this texture pushing back on you. Stink, I call BS. You say players want the truth. I guarantee you Melvin Gordon and Jerry Judy don't want to hear the truth about their play and attitudes. Am I wrong? That's an interesting question by the texture. Players folks, that's code for he's right. No, no, that's not, I mean, he's right, I don't know if those are the right if those guys want the truth, but that's why you don't want those guys on your team. They have players want players honestly, players want to know. And you know how much better how much better you are as a football team, or as a team in general, when it is transparent, I'm not saying you go out in the general public and you land based your players as a coach, you can't do that. But when you have meaning, honesty is an Aussie is important. This ain't good this effort from you is not good enough. And that's not the standard we're going to have here. And therefore, there are going to be consequences. To that lack of production, there are players players want that. Honestly, they do. How many times have you watched how many times have you watched what's that hard knocks? You ever surprised when guys get fired and cut and they go, thank you for the opportunity. Yeah, I understand. They understand. Guys get that. But if your culture is, again, video tribute culture and wipe your little high knees and it's going to be okay and we're so close with just a player to away and if that's the culture you've created, then you've created a soft, I can't handle the truth. I'm a victim mentality culture. You got a victim culture. And you've had it for a long time. And nothing is. Nothing is our fault, I went out here, good thing I got my conditioning in. I don't throw a block. So, the Broncos have had a culture all right. The last 6 years. It's a victim culture. It's a victim culture. And do I think that do I think that it would serve them well and ultimately would serve Gordon well? Because Gordon knows exactly why he's not playing. For Nathaniel Hackett, the way you handled that we had a great talk and we're on the same page now. And everything is okay. And he will start. Bologna. Hey, we had to talk. It was an honest talk, and he knows exactly where he stands. And I'm not going to answer any other questions about it. Done. He knows where he stands. Is it likely that the conversation that Hackett had with Gordon was a lot different, the tone of it was a lot different than what Hackett shared with us. I don't think so. I really don't. No, that's bad. Because

"McKenna for the left circle rifling one in on goal and marassa was square to the shot took it off his chest and let it drop into his catching glove and held it. Face off will be in the circle to his right with one O 7 left on the app. And the car two right handed players out there with three left handers. The left handers are all the guys that are down low around the front of the net. McKinnon and the car working out high in the power play area. You're looking for that back door pass all the time. Draw one by the abs. And here's black and in the right wing corner hawk's own moving it back to the right point for car law Rick shot. They score. Another power play goal for Colorado. They're now four for 6 on the power play in this hockey game and lead at 5 to two with two 57 left in regulation. I think this goal is going to go to the choose get and again just put the big body to choose gets 6 four standing in front of the net and he's got a guy screening the goaltender right in front of Brazil. He can't see what's going on and then a little redirect there by nachos from the shot from a car coming in. Shooting lane was there Blackhawks kind of lost their structure out high shots on goal with traffic. That little redirect that you see has got two in this game like an ins got to the abs have four power play goals. And they pretty much put on a clinic here in special teams you know and I'm not saying that the penalty killing has been bad for the Blackhawk out. I understand power play in the abs is just that good. Here's domi now into the abs out to the left point passes one through the air intended for Athens to see who was breaking to the nets. The puck bounces over at the sea is second into the catching glove of georgi of who will hold on. A major pickup for the abs after losing Darcy Kemper Kemper saint of the Washington capitals. Came in here. They've got shirk and is their number one guy and he was available. In my mind, sister can is a great goaltender. The Jersey of held his owner in New York when he was playing. And it didn't get the real of the opportunities. He's going to get the opportunity here to be number one with Franco as the one beagle tender. And Pavel Franco has an undefeated record against the Blackhawks at four zero and O with a shutout. So strengthens the goaltending position, obviously that's what a general manager like your friend Joe sackett was looking to do. Inside the hawk zone, the puck taken on the near corner by Logan O'Connor who spins it back to the left point for Bowen Byron, but it's over sticking back in behind the avalanche net. Georgia will scrape it around at the right wing side Alex newhook at center ice. Hit by Tyler Johnson as he enters the hot zone, lost the putt, but the abs will take it back. Josh Manson for the right point. Tosses a lazy one in from Mohawk now that it deflects wide to the corner. New hook then coughed it up

"Nathan McKinnon, their superstar player. He just inked an 8 year contract extension that's worth 12.6 million annually making it the richest contract against the salary cap in NHL history. They've locked up star defenseman kale Macarthur for a long time. They've still got a lot of the players that made up the depth of this team. They're in very good shape. Now the bad news. They had some significant roster changes. They lost experienced players like nazem kadri and Andre barakovic forward and goaltender Darcy Kemper. Now, I think they've got the depth to a place where koski on the wing and young Alex newhook can replace kadri's scoring, but not necessarily his intangibles. The real question is, what is this goal tend to look like? They had Pavel Franco's back. He was Kemper's backup and they traded for New York rangers back up. Alexander georgiev, they're going to split time. They basically want to see if they can make your give kind of like a Philip group hour was for them a couple of years ago. Get a backup from somebody else, make them into a starter and they're pretty optimistic they told me that they're going to be able to work out this goaltending tandem to great success. So Frankie versus georgiev. Two of the great names in the sport, battling for time. Indeed, I am much like Columbia and Rocky Horror picture show, a regular Frankie fan, he won 6 of 7 playoff appearances during the abs run of the Stanley Cup. I think he's a goalie that's always seemed like he needed his shot, sometimes health has been a consideration. Georgia is going to be interesting. He was the goalie with the rangers. Obviously lost his gig to eager to chuck and the best in the trophy winner. And a lot of people had said, if you get them out of New York and put them in the situation, he's going to thrive. But again, this is a huge pressure deal. This is a team that clearly has designs on winning back to back cups, much like the lightning did right. Like the penguins did and now he's going to have to in the words of GM Chris McFarland as he told me carry the ball a little bit himself. But you mentioned the lightning. I mean, the lightning, look, there's a hole larger story here, Greg that we need to address up top here because this is a team that has won two Stanley cups in the last 5 seasons. They have made the playoffs all 5 of those years, but the story that we need to get to is the fact that Ian Cole, their defenseman, has been suspended, right? There was this investigation into allegations that were made on social media that he sexually abused the woman when she was a minor. And so what do we know about this situation beyond the hockey analysis side of it? Well, Ian Cole was signed in the summer as a free agent by the lightning. He was expected to be in their starting lineup when the season opens against the rangers. But he was suspended over the weekend when an anonymous Twitter user put out a statement that said that Cole groomed her for four years, quote, starting when I was a minor in high school and noted that Cole was quote well aware of my age at the time of the alleged sexual abuse. The Twitter post didn't specify when or where this alleged encounter happened. The lightning subsequently released a statement saying that they had suspended Ian Cole quote pending the results of an investigation. They didn't specify if that was a police investigation and NHL investigation, their own investigation. And then Cole put out a statement through his agent later that night, saying, I completely deny these allegations and will fully cooperate with the NHL and the Tampa Bay lightning their officials, legal departments in the forthcoming investigation. I look forward to clearing my name and demonstrating to the NHL and the Tampa Bay lightning that these allegations are unfounded. So suspended for now as this investigation plays out, but obviously a bit of a bombshell in the NHL over the weekend. So as a lightning try and figure out a serious story and Ian Cole is held out of the lineup as they face the rangers to open the season as you just said, I do want to stick around in the Eastern Conference because the thing that's happening in Pittsburgh right now with a group of players group of veterans that I do recognize here. Sidney Crosby, evgeni malkin and Chris le Tang, who have been with this team forever, who won the cup together in 2017, I do find all of that intriguing, right? I mean, this team has been eliminated in the first round of each of these last four postseasons. And so the window that they have right now for championship contention, are they actual contenders still? Yeah, and the band is back together. There was some thought that they were going to blow up the roster based on the fact that they haven't had any success in the playoffs in the last few seasons, but they re signed up getting malkin. They re signed Chris la Tang, they bought back Brian rust. I asked Sidney Crosby if he was nervous this summer about the band potentially not coming back together and he said, you know, just I'm happy, relieved. And then immediately thinking, okay, we've got an opportunity. These guys are staying and now we've got to do something with it. So disturbingly good Crosby. Thank you very much. So Sid is happy. He's happy the band is back together. And if you that's happy. That's happy. That's as happy as we're getting from Crosby. The thing about the penguins that's interesting is this. They are convinced, and this was the selling point to ownership to bring back these veteran players that the last two postseasons were kind of they were a victim of circumstances. Their goal a Tristan jarry play horribly against the islanders in the first round. That's why they lost that series. Last year, if you remember Pablo, they had that situation where they were down to their third string goalie, Crosby gets hurt during the series against the rangers. They lose in 7 games. So their proof of concept is we had some weird stuff happened to us in the playoffs with this group together, bring the group back, maybe things go differently for us this time. And their window of opportunity is probably there for the next couple of seasons. They have a great coach in Mike Sullivan. They've got a pretty deep roster I expect them to make the playoffs again, but it is very rare in not only hockey, but professional sports to see a team run back a bunch of 35 plus stars after not having had success in the playoffs for the last four seasons. Yeah, and so I turn now to Alexander Ovechkin, as we often do when you mention the name Sydney Crosby, because what's happening with him in Washington, Greg, it's also interesting, right? This team won the cup in 2018. That was the year after the penguins did it. But ever since there has been something of like this downward spiral, right? I mean, so how likely is it actually that we might get a playoffs that we might get a postseason with that Ovechkin who himself is, yeah, 37 and without the caps possibly. Well, I have the cap's missing. It might be by a couple points, but I'm a little bit suspicious of the aging curve for them. Father time is undefeated as they say, Pablo and you look at TJ oshi, he's 36. He posted his worst offensive numbers in 7 seasons. Nick Baxter was 35. He's going to start the season on injured reserve after a major hip surgery. They're not sure when he's back. John Carlson, Lars Eller, both 33. And like you said, Ovechkin is 37, but Russian machine never break. Remember he's still chasing Wayne Gretzky's NHL mark of 894 goals. Ovechkin sits third all time with 780 has a chance to pass Gordie Howe this season at 8 O one. So his record chase will at least be a reason to keep watching the capitals, no matter what happens in the standings. The reason to believe if you're a caps fan is this, they posted an 8 98 team save percentage the lowest for any playoff team last season for their goaltending. They went out and signed Darcy Kemper from the Colorado avalanche to a 5 year contract. If he is the solution to their goaltending woes and their older players can still produce that reasonable levels, they may still be able to make the playoffs, but I have them out on the outside looking in. So if they remain on the outside looking in and they miss the Eastern Conference playoffs entirely, who is the team that didn't make those playoffs last season that you think could be in this one? It's the devil's the devil. Speaking of references that people under 37 probably won't get. Thank you. Thank you for making that. Shout out to my New York born gen xers. Listen, three things have to happen for the New Jersey Devils to make the playoffs. They need to get some saves for two consecutive off seasons. They've tried to improve their goaltending and into consecutive off seasons. It did not work. Now they went out and they acquired capitals goalie VTEC than a check to pair with Mackenzie blackwood. If those two can stay healthy and improve the goaltending, that's a good thing for the Devils. There's the health aspect. Dougie Hamilton, Jack Hughes, impact players. They were both banged up last season. Jack Hughes was limited to 49 games last year. If both of those guys are healthy, play at least 70 games, I think that's going to help them. Finally, they're power play stunt last year, Pablo. And if they can improve that with their new associate coach Andrew brunette, then

"You gotta be sharp, man. That ball's there. You selling it? If you catch that thing, are you taking the two smell or whatever, or are you giving it back to Aaron judge, who gave it to his mom, postgame, did he not? Gave the ball to his mind, I think everybody's honestly, I think everybody's circumstance is different. Okay. So you're not answering the question. No, but I'm just saying, so what would I say? What I like to do? I'm selling it. I'm retiring. I'm done. Yeah, I would say there's probably some people that wouldn't. They want to collectible. They'd want to keep it. I didn't collect anything from my own career. What the hell do I want another baseball around here for? I would sell it for sure. You keeping it? You're talking to a guy who works in the gambling industry. What do you think I'm doing? That thing's going, that thing is going to the highest bidder. Listen, I could get a nice photo op with Aaron judge a Jersey and a couple of bats, but that's like, you know, when people throw out thoughts and prayers with bad things happen. That's not actionable. Give me the money 100%. That's a 150 trips to Vegas for you. All right, we'll get to the NFL pick of the week. The game of the week. I know you want to do this on weekly basis here on the podcast. But we are a hockey podcast. So let's project some NHL possibilities, right? We're looking way down the line here. Stanley Cup favorite, heart trophy favorite, who should we be looking for? Man, it's so funny because you guys probably feel this way too. You know, we're just going along with summer and then what do you mean the regular season starts next week? We got to shift focus and looking at the odds board Colorado with plus four 25 to win the Stanley Cup. They're the favorites right now. Usually you see a few teams a little bit closer, more kind of clustered in the 600, 700, the top three or four. Colorado is kind of the runaway favorite to win. Then you've got the leafs and Panthers sitting at ten to one each. You know, it's funny because, a, that division is going to be really hard to get out of any way, I think. I think it's going to be a much better division than it's been for the last few years. And you know, depending on who you ask, they may think those teams are not as good as they were last year. So I don't know if I'm buying on that. I'm looking further down the list. I've been saying for three years now, it's almost the rangers time to get there. They're 23 to one. The oilers have some unfinished business at 15 to one. I don't know. I don't have a personal favorite. I think there's some decent value out there. What do you guys think? I think that I can see why Colorado would be favored. I mean, I don't know how anybody would think that Alexander georgi Evan Pavel Franco say Stanley Cup winning goaltending, but maybe they just have to not screw up the plot. And it might be enough for them. But I don't see any teams that jump ahead after that. I see a bunch of teams that are all in the same pot. And the teams you mentioned, I'm with you. I don't have a feel. Look, I did all literally all of the ranger playoff games last year.

Tonight, la Quinta, tomorrow, you triumph. Book direct at LQ dot com. So Jeremy, when the pandemic hits in 2020, how did that affect the whole emergency backup goaltender economy? What it meant was that you had suddenly all these situations in which, you know, it wasn't about injuries. It wasn't about goalies getting injured during games, but it was about teams not having the goalies able to play because they were in COVID protocols, which was happening quite a lot. And if you're getting tested all the time, and if you test positive, then you're out for a certain number of days. Typically what you do is if you have a goalie, one of your two goalies, you know, on your NHL team, when you're the protocols, then you're calling up goalies from your minor league teams. This past December, Colorado starter, the avalanches starter, Darcy Kemper, he enters into the protocol, which means their backup, Pavel Franco's becomes the presumptive starter, which means they need a backup now in Dustin Boone Smith. Gets the call. I got word. We need you to come down to the rink and get dressed for Colorado and you know, obviously right away there's a lot of nerves. So that night, the avalanche are in town. And Dustin Smith goes from his job as a baggage handler at the airport to dressing and warming up for the Colorado avalanche. That night in Nashville. How is he feeling at this moment? He's experiencing this the way that you or I might as an out of body experience. Things were kind of moving so fast that, you know, in the moment they're just, they're just hockey players and then after the moment's over and looking back and reflecting on it's like, man, there was Nathan McKinnon. There was kale mccart. You're actually part of the team for a day or a couple of days because all the guys were paying to do this job or in the protocols. The emergency aspect of this has become far more global, but you mentioned a word there, Jeremy. The guys who are getting paid. And so I have an important and arguably very overdue question at this point, which is, what is an E bug make when they get called into action like this? I don't know how often you guys use yiddish on this show, but when I hear when I hear the question posted, now I can't think of anything but guess not a zilch. Yeah, and then after the game, yeah, I just had to play a few minutes of the third period. I have to say, I have not had the same experience as Kyle meals. My sweet sweet Kyle. You have so much to learn. Poor Kyle. But there is a rule though. You're not allowed to drink. It's the opposite of a drink ticket. It's an anti drink ticket. Right, you're not supposed to be drinking. But Jeremy, it does occur to me here. The E bug clearly has all of the leverage in this equation. I probably should have asked for a little bit more.

"Now there's Nico ranton and taking a pass and backhanding it into the top shelf he scores Nico ranton the leading goal scorer for the Colorado ambulance just scored his 22nd of the season So his 22nd on the year in his 6th goal over his last 7 games land to Scott picks up his 24th assist on the year so does devonte And those would be the only two goals tonight a two nothing win for the Colorado avalanche It is the third shutout of Pavel Francis career It's the black hawks third time being shut out this year They suffer their fourth straight game without a win This comes after a four game winning streak the hawks fall to 1520 and 7 with the loss Colorado and blue improves to 29 8 and three with the victory against Franco with back to back shutouts for the Colorado avalanche It's his second shutout of the year overall in his first against the black hawks Let's face it there was there has been there may still continue to be speculation of Marc Andre fleury possibly being moved with just this year left on his contract Obviously the black hawks having a very tall mountain to climb for a playoff situation so Marc Andre fleury is pretty much the first name I have now one of the first names brought up in terms of trade talk when you talk about the Chicago Blackhawks in Colorado's team has been brought up as well because what Darcy Kemper and Pavel Franco are doing right now is probably a little bit more than what they expected So right now what they've been able to do is a big reason why Colorado has been able to string together all these wins But again Jared bednar the head coach of Colorado still thinks that the avalanche team can do a little bit better That's just how solid Colorado is right now Okay we're going to take one more break and when we come back we'll take a look around the NHL as this was one out of just 7 games in the NHL.

"The Blackhawks fall victim to a Pavel Rancho's second straight shutout Colorado gold tender put up 23 saves tonight make that 58 straight saves for Franco again He is not allowed a goal in 127 minutes and 43 seconds He also has a 6 game winning streak his only loss this year was his very first game of the season against the Nashville predators back on December 16th through That's the only loss for this Colorado avalanche team since December 2nd That's how solid they've been as of late I'm Joe brand You're listening to the Bitcoin of America Chicago Blackhawks postgame show on 7 20 WGN The hawks fall to Colorado tonight two to nothing Colorado is now two Sorry three and O against the black hawks this year the hawks are oh two and one against Colorado This season they will wrap up the season series Friday evening at the united center You can always find tickets at black clocks dot com slash tickets Also mentioned earlier today that the black hawks are having a watch party for the Team USA Olympics for the women's team over at 5th third arena that will be on Sunday February 6th so feel free to check out the Blackhawks website for more information on that but that should be a very fun time If you go to that watch party you also get a free black hawks ticket for a game later on in March should be a really fun time over at 5th third arena Let's get to the scrolling recap of this one And again the first period was probably the best period played by the hawks They didn't commit Well they did commit a penalty but very late in the period They had their only power play of the game And their power play looked okay They didn't generate many shots or any actually But definitely had some decent attempts And again the Blackhawks outshot Colorado in that first period ten to 8 but at least put the most pressure on Pavel Franco all night long Unfortunately none were able to get through because Franco was in the zone especially on this save against Jonathan tays Dave takes a bump There's a center racers lafford in the Avalon For the first two speedy puts the puck into the left wing corner wins the battle for it fed it in front daisy shoes But the glove save what a chance for Jonathan tays So again the Blackhawks without a goal in that first period Colorado is well though I like Henrik borgstrom today even though again the Blackhawks had no goals but borgstrom coming off his two goal game against Minnesota on Saturday Made a couple of nice plays in the first period including one where he muscled the puck against or away from Devon taves and bringing it down the ice for a shot attempt and borgstrom also doing a nice job of waving off icing later on in the game Saw a little extra pep in his step tonight Sam lafferty too his second straight game being on that second line with dominik kubelik and Jonathan taves You like to see everything that he's really brought since joining this Blackhawks team after the trade with the Pittsburgh penguins for Alex nylander He just really liked Sam lafferty's two way game just a real fierce competitor strong guy big hustler you see him both on both ends of the puck offensively and defensively just if not making things happen trying to make things happen And I think the black hawks definitely have to be pleased with Sam lafferty I think Derek king is often talked about pleased he is with his play So as we moved into the second period the Blackhawks still had a minute 41 of a man advantage for Colorado to kill off after Brandon Hagel was charged with a tripping penalty That's when lafferty had a good check from behind in the abs net that began the second period So again the hawks didn't really allow Colorado to get off to a great start with that power play but this was still the period that I thought Colorado was able to turn the tables in terms of overall momentum of the game Later on Seth Jones was charged with an interference penalty That brought him to the box and it put Colorado with a man advantage Here's land of Scott with 38.
