CBS news update. I'm Jim shanavie KCBS news time, twelve thirty two. This portion of the news, watch is sponsored by ringcentral the global leader in cloud communications and collaboration solutions. It's time now for our daily tech and business report with KCBS contributor, Bloomberg technology anchor, and executive producer, Emily Chang. Shares of work messaging platform. Slack started trading today on the new York Stock Exchange under the ticker work. Emily joins us now live. So Emily tell us more about this. So slack is a messaging platform has become beloved certainly by many Silicon Valley tech companies, but now has a global following and they opened high today. Shares peaked at about forty two dollars early today. They're now backing around forty which gives them a valuation in the twenty billion dollar range. They were targeting something closer to sixteen. So this is good news for them. They took a non traditional route to going public. They had what's called direct listing which is what Spotify did a year ago, which means not having the traditional roadshow, not actually raising money, but this means that their employees in early. Investors can sell shares immediately. Okay, so so, but they are making a profit don't they, they don't make a profit as of now they are unprofitable. So they did get a good reception. Even though they're still not making money. They did bring in about four hundred million dollars in revenue last year but they also lost one hundred forty million dollars in revenue. So, you know, just like many tech companies go public without being profitable. They have a lot to prove in the future, they did just get their first blessing from an analyst on Wall Street Atlantic equities saying that this is worth buying. You know, slack has about ten million daily users now the projection is that could be fifty million by twenty twenty-five, but they've got a lot of competitors and big competitors, like Facebook and Microsoft that have billions and billions of dollars and billions of users, so, you know, slack is going to have to prove it's more than just this cute fund chat app, and certainly you can do more than that on slack. But. It certainly has a lot of room to grow. Remind us how people at work use slack, so you can use it to chat internally with team members. So, for example, within your organization, you might have a certain team that uses it within their team, you might use it across the entire organization. I had a teacher used it for my kids preschool. So parents could sign up and see photos of their kids posted on slack. So there are all different kinds of use cases. What's great about slack is that it is very user friendly. It's not this wonky sort of enterprise software that you might get with a more traditional enterprise service provider, but the question is will it translate to corporate America and beyond? You know, we use a computer system here at work called news, boss and what I want to chat with somebody on the team. I just opened up the quick message box instead it that way. So why would we buy slack? Instead, right. So a lot of. Nations already have their own internal systems. They might use Microsoft Office. And so one of the risk factors is in a downturn when businesses are cutting, why wouldn't they cut slack, which sort of feels like a nice to have, and they're going to have to prove that it's not just a nice to have, you know, some employees use slack, because they just like it better than the internal chat system that their company uses its very user friendly. You know you can be connected all the time, but it is not intrusive necessarily so that is, you know, wanna slacks. Interesting challenges is sort of proving why you need this, why this needs to be an essential part of your life or your work life. And ultimately, why you should pay for it. All right. Thanks for talking to us KCBS contributor. Bloomberg technology.
