"With magic speaking out. Right. And you heard all the anchors saying like right. The other thing, also, it's actually a historic moment because that's the Pat Riley origin story. Right? You trace it all back to that. And then Riley is basically involved in the next four decades of the NBA. Well, and then that they west and Riley are going to be co coaches. And then west and the press conference is like, wait a second, that's not how it's going to play out. It's the best. The other thing talked about old school journalism. It really made me nostalgic for the era when the press just was able to talk to players. You see like the players had so much availability for random local reporters. And just over and over again, there's this one interview where Kareem who's like legendarily the worst interview as a player of that era. Now he's really good writer. But back then, just had no time for anybody, and he's given this interview before the game and he's just he's just so annoyed, but trying to seem chipper and just giving no answers, but that's the thing you kind of had to play the game back then. But build my favorite part of that clip is that they show the live time in the screen and it's 6 36 p.m.. It's like less than an hour before tip off. Kareem's doing a live television interview. The other favorite things is so the origin of the story, you know, the Lakers, they win the championship in 80. They lose an 81. And then at the start of the 81 82 season, Paul west had the coaches installed this new slowdown offense and they're going into Kareem. As I'm watching this, I'm like, this is really coping Shaq all over again, right? Because Shaq's complaining that the run in the offense through Kareem and it's slowing it down and Shaq wants to play more up tempo, which of course Kareem does want to do. He's already in his 30. He's been in the league like a dozen years at that point, he was going to run up and down the court. And so, you know, 20 years before we had Shaq and Kobe, it's Jack and Kobe basically. Only this time, you know, Kobe won at the outset. But so magic Benson's frustration after the game invasive says, I need a trade. This isn't working for me. I'm in the wrong office. Yeah. All this stuff. So they fly back to LA the next day. All the media is at the airport. They're interviewing Magic Johnson and Paul Weston as they're walking through LAX, which of course you can't do now because of, you know, the 9 11 restrictions. And then the next day there's the famous press conference in which Jerry bus announces that Jerry Jerry Wes is going to coach offense, parole is going to go to defense or me co coaches and west gets up there and says, no, Pat Riley is going to be the guy here. And then they talk to Riley does individual interviews with all the local stations. And so does Jerry bus? And so does Jerry bus and then the next day they're at practice and they're filming practice. You know, they've got full access to practice. And then they talk to magic in west head shows up to clean out his office and they talk to West End. And then Jerry bust does a live shot with Jim hill before the game when they play their first game after Senate. Like, the owner is talking an hour and a half before the game after he just made this controversial move. You think anyone any owner in the NBA would be doing that right now? It was amazing. "Part of it is that the legacy, right? We're not currently we're not thinking of centers. Right. And so we're not thinking of any, like, who's the best center of this error? Does it even matter? Well, they might have been the best center of his era. Now centers are, I think it's a better, deeper position than maybe it was during when Dwight was there. He was kind of he represented like the last old school center. And we were moving to his new world. The real last old school center Shaq was always dumping on Dwight. But that's honestly that's why Dwight didn't make it. I think people just don't like them. You know, and this is we're so and I and house did a basketball book a basketball podcast about it. Last year, about this very point, his career was I think significantly better than people realized, but people didn't like them. And he was a jackass, and he did stuff like the Superman thing. And, you know, in the finals, against the Lakers where they had real chances to take control of that series and he couldn't make a free throw and he was just a really frustrating query. He felt like the kind of guy that had the world that his fingertips and a lot like how we feel about somebody like Ben Simmons now. But it's like, get your shit together, dude. You're one of the 6 best athletes in the league. So Ben, if we transition a little bit. So you sent me that awesome clip of I don't know if I can even call it a clip when it's 40 minutes of news reports from LA, local TV sports when the Lakers Paul west had. And, you know, all the speculation at the time was the Magic Johnson, go upstairs and have Paul west had fired. And I remember that's my second or third, really third year really being in the NBA fan. My invade fandom basically started with magic and the Lakers and the 1980 playoffs. And from then I just jumped all in and manages my favorite player ever. And all of a sudden he's vilified, right? He's the bad guy. He got booed that first game after west had got fired. And it was so hard to see my favorite player turn into the villain. And I was thinking one of the things that's hurting Ben Simmons is, is anyone really heartbroken by this? You know, did he have like this hardcore fan base anywhere that's like it feels disappointed in him? That's part of the problem. Like, nobody's heartbroken over this. You know, I get the sense you've got probably more Philly fans than I do in your friendship circle that they're just kind of just get rid of them. You know? There's no, there's no reckoning. There's no, you know, heart rending. No, this guy doesn't want to be here. Let's get rid of him. Whereas for me, it was so hard to see Magic Johnson vilified and he got over really quick and they won the championship and then they took off. But Ben Simmons doesn't have that. And I Yeah, he entered the fuck this guy zone, which is a really dangerous place to be very clear. The difference is, you know, magic, his rookie year, they won the title and he played one of the most legendary games of all time. And for that, it's like at least he had a pedigree and a track record whereas Ben Simmons is track record year after year has been but the reason I set that to you, there's this dude. So if people want to watch this, there's this YouTube guy. His name is non player zealot four. That's his YouTube handle. And he just basically has every single Laker clip from the 80s and 90s and 2000s. You would ever want to find and all the Chick Hearn calls, which are great. I actually watched the games game four in 1987 finals, which I went to the sky. I'd never heard the Chick Hearn call. It's great. It's really like, it's so, so good, but you heard it in the they always play the chick hurn call like on the MBA commercials or whatever. Yeah, but never like the whole actual play by play. Right. So this guy put together this 40 minute Montage of and it's I'm telling you when Brian Curtis sees this, he might have to, he might need medical attention. It's got Fred Rogan. The hill of course, of course Jim. Tim hell. And Bill just has an aged. Right. He's the exact same from 1981. And, you know, when you hear Jerry busts, answering one of the questions in San Roy, that's Roy firestone, right? And also there's one thing where they toss back to the anchors and CBS and Jim hill's there. And you hear Connie Chung in there, saying, can I say hi to magic? Connie Chung, who went on to be a national network anchor? Well, you looked at the best one. Roy firestone. Rocky rocky star, student a hand. You know, for the record movies. Yeah. At best times of Richmond high. Right. All those guys. But it was actually really good journalism. You know, watching it as a drilling professional. That's when local TV sports, you know, they had, first of all, they had multiple guys. Like you see guys in the studio throwing out to their reporters, you know, now you've got one person in sports staffs and local news. And I give credit to a lot of those guys because they've done some reporting. You know, you hear them giving informed opinions. And there was so much skepticism about what the Lakers were sending out that, oh, we'd already made the decision and we were gonna fire west head later and then magic just happened to speak out, you.

"More as talking about food shockingly more as talking about food. Shockingly when I watched the Nathan's hot dog eating contest yesterday and shoot, I've been watching this for decades. It's a New York event. And if you don't know me, Jodie Mack filling in for day I hear on CBS Sports radio. I'm an original New York guy and was on w f A. N are just the station in New York. The 1st 24 hour all sports radio station. Uh, that turned all sports back in the eighties in a matter of fact. And I was part of the original lineup the weekend overnight guy, but I used to fill in on Saturdays and or on holidays. As kind of like what I'm doing now, Um, and fourth of July was always a work day. As far as I was concerned, even when I was a full time regular guy. If the holiday pop to July port our work I know he's talking about don't need to be off on the port. Um, because I like taking holidays and using comp days later in the year for a veteran bigger reason, then Yeah, I'm going to cook hot dogs and hamburgers. I'm going to cook hot dogs and hamburgers at home any time so I would always work on the fourth and before it ever became a big enough event at ESPN decided to broadcast did I used to watch it on New York one, which is a local New York news station, and they would have live coverage from the hot dog eating contest. So I've been watching it on television longer than the nation has and Joey Chestnut stepped up and broke his own world record for 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes. That's just unfathomable. But, uh, Kelly Chestnut is is the all time great in that particular contest, more power to him And oh, by the way, did you see ESPN feed went down. During the broadcast. Not good. Sorry about that. You dropped the ball, ESPN. So I flipped over to YouTube and watch the end of it and saw Joey Chestnut celebrate after setting his world record. And I, of course, immediately thought of Morass because at some point East some kind of hot dog eating contest, probably dozens of them over the years. He's always got some kind of an eating extent going on here on the D a show so I hope more as is having a good July 5th as well. And yes, congrats to Joey cast night. And on the women's side. Uh, they've got a, uh, female competitor who is almost the level of Joey Chestnut. He won his 14th. Nathan's hot dog eating contest. Entity won eight in a row. Then he got beats. And he's now 16 and what row more on top of that, so he's won 14 out of the last 15. But on the women's side, Miki Sudo, the all time women's eating champion, had won seven in a row till yesterday. Well, she didn't get beat. He didn't compete. Because she's pregnant. We don't usually face that in the world of sports that we got, uh, inform everybody. They're not competing because they're pregnant. Well, congratulations to Mickey that she's going to have her firstborn child. Will that one grow up to be an eater? I'm not 100% sure, but he also, uh, watched her lengthy undefeated streak. Seven years in a row. Go by the wayside. So, Yeah, if you want to comment on that what you did on the fourth of July. I doubt you attempted to get anywhere near with Joey Chestnut did with his nation's hot dog eating championship. But I'll take your barbecue calls to and I do want to talk about the NBA final because it's a great matchup between these two teams. They both came into the NBA in the same year. I'm not sure, but he knows that But they were part of NBA expansion Back in 1968 69. That's right. When I started following the NBA, it's the wee lad and oh, by the way, Yes, the New York Knicks from my team and they won the championship in 69 70. So I can't say I remember. The 68 69 season. But I do remember 69 70 because the Knicks were that good and they ended up winning the championship. But both teams came into the NBA at the same time, and Milwaukee hit the ground running. Because they were able to draft a kid by the name of Lew Alcindor. Maybe you're more recognize His name is cream Abdul Jabbar. But when he came out of U C l A. He was Lew Alcindor knee with stone called dominant on the collegiate level, then in the pros as well. By their third season, they won an NBA championship. They acquired a player by name Oscar Robertson, the big old I one of the greatest all time NBA guards as a grizzled veteran to run the show with Kareem Abdul Jabbar. And sure enough, they won the championship and 1970 after not coming or 71 until not coming into the NBA. You're just a couple of years before so they they were a team that immediately. Jumped into the fray as a championship contender and they went to the finals A couple years later got beat and see. This just seems weird. Milwaukee was a Western Division team. It's been so long since that's the case. You don't even realize that at one point, Yes, they were in the West. They beat the bullets, The Baltimore bullets. A K A. Now the Washington Wizards. They became the first day with the Baltimore Bullets and they began to Washington. Bullets moved down. I 95 into the nation's capital. Then they changed their name to the Wizards. Understandably so, uh, and retired the name the bullets, but not to Milwaukee, beating the championship 51 years ago and then a couple years later, they made it to the championship round again and got Beaten by the Celtics. Milwaukee and Boston as an eastern western Ribery. I don't think so, but it was a different NBA back then. So in their early stages, the Milwaukee Bucks, mostly because of out cinder were a top flight NBA team competing for championships. They haven't been back since they have not made a final appearance since, uh, 48 years ago. So it's been a long time between drinks of water for Milwaukee. The Phoenix Suns came in that same year. Didn't make a championship run for a while, they finally did, and they were led by Paul West Wall at that time, he was their best player. And then several years later, with Charles Barkley being their key acquisition They made it to another NBA final. Their head coach was Paul Westfall, who? Unfortunately we just lost this past January, passed away at the age of 70 or 71 an all time great player. I actually thought he was a better coach than a player. Not everybody agreed with that, I think is because he was such a good coach that people forgot how great a player he was. But he was a phenomenal coach and a player in his probably the most popular NBA figure in the history of Phoenix. I don't know if it's a storyline out there that they're trying to win one for Paul Westfall this year, but The Suns have made it twice and came up short in the two NBA Finals in which they competed. Um I remember that loss with against the Boston Celtics. Gar heard making a 40 ft shot to force a game into overtime. Back then, game would have been over because they had no three point shots back to person when the Sun's made it to the NBA Finals for the first time, But these two franchises Successes and or shortcoming kind of parallel themselves, And now they find themselves against pitted against each other in the NBA Finals, and they both had really strong seasons. The sons a little bit more unexpected. Last year, they were invited to the bubble because they were mathematically still capable of getting a playoff spot. Remember, a bunch of teams didn't even get invited to the bubble the sun to one of them and had one of the worst records. Coming into the bubble when they did, and sure enough, they ripped off. Eight straight wins last year, so they foreshadowed the upcoming season a little bit in the bubble, and I bought a couple of Phoenix guys The last couple days just said Greg Moron, uh, coverage them for the Arizona Republican, he said. No. Jody, I said, is that when this one started was, can you say there's a carry over from last year, he said. I'll go further back that when they hired James Jones as their general manager, Um, NBA former player running mate with LeBron James was one of LeBron's favorite players played with him down in Miami. "One and only player who called me. I feel like Korean got it before people got it. I really do. I wish more athletes now got it. All these athletes who are being asked to play during COVID, all these college athletes. Like they're just using you. They come into your community, they make promises of a shiny locker room. They show you videotape of our big locker room in Texas. So each locker costs blah blah blah, then they bring you there. They don't give a shit about your education at all, and then they spit you out. And you leave without a degree half the time, and you're stocking challenge at Home Depot in a customer comes up to you and say, where are you that guy who played at Ohio State? It's such a corrupt system. And he understood it early on. The beauty of Kareem is he was just going to use it. Instead of letting them use him, he was going to use it to his advantage too. And he would make his money and he would continue to educate himself and he wasn't going to get caught up and not having a 7 up commercial, not being on TV. You know, he didn't need the celebrity. And I think magic, on the other hand, go right in. Celebrity, he loves celebrity. He loved being the center of attention. You know, you're going to pay me to play basketball. That's amazing. When asked if he would do anything differently, west hit his candid. If I'm being practical now, I should have stayed with the lesson plan. Jack McKinney left me. And let Pat Riley figure out his own list. So much for a lesson plans from former teachers are coaches. And that is precisely what Scott osler said to me who was then the beat writer for the LA times. He said to me, Paul, you had the best team in the world. You had the best owner in the world who would get you players, you lived in the best city in the world in Los Angeles. You were the highest paid coach in professional basketball. Why would you ever change? And I said, Scott, that's a good question. The irony of Paul west inspiring was that it was his system that Pat Riley would run and would become the hallmark of the showtime dynasty. At Riley did a very good job of running my fast break and he ran it. I wouldn't say he ran the system better, but he handled the players better. You know, he was a person who could maneuver the players and convince them that this is a good way. So who then is responsible for showtime? I think you could probably make the argument that it's argument that McKinney bagat west said in west said bayat Riley and they kind of morphed into each other. The birth of the showtime era and the influence it had on the game of professional basketball is immeasurable. First of all, every big point guard who handles the ball now. Every Kevin Durant type guy should write a letter, thank you to Magic Johnson for showing that this can be done and it's okay. Little guards aren't going to steal a bar every time you dribble and then it works well. Every team that doesn't slog the ball up the court slow and set up an offense. The running gun, the slashing and gunning the birth of that kind of basketball comes to no showtime teams. But for the writer Jeff probe, the era is most memorable, but something that happened off the basketball court. Whenever I think of showtime, the thing I think at first, I swear to God and I bring this up all the time. Is Magic Johnson arriving in LA for the first time, and he's being driven by a limousine to meet Jerry boss. And he has the car stop. Because he sees orange is growing on a tree. And he opens the door and he picks an arm, and he's just blown away by this idea. I've been orange growing on a tree. And I realize I always think of the NBA, the birth of the modern NBA, as Maggie Johnson, plucking orange off a tree. And just this magic of that moment and the sunshine and the forum and the palm trees, it was so Magic Johnson at, you know, as a team. He's just a teenager. He's just a kid. And he just wants a burger, and he wants to pick an orange off a tree and he wants to come to LA. It's kind of a beautiful merging of world. Oh, is he playing some ball? He really is. Rebound hit by Kareem mascot. Here they go again. It's showtime. Fate. Had brought the Lakers to Los Angeles. Will had brought them into the possession of Jerry buss. And though it was his ownership that redefined, reinvigorated, and reestablished the moribund NBA. It was the magic of chance that brought a kid all the way from east Lansing Michigan to Los Angeles. Just so that he could pick an orange before his Los Angeles Lakers would change the landscape of sports and culture. In America. Next time, on westward. In 1981, the same year that the showtime era was in the early stages of launching the entire league into the stratosphere of cultural and commercial relevance. Another basketball era was taking root a 120 miles south of LA down California's four O 5 freeway. We became a joke, you know, because we couldn't fill the arena. And I was always saying, dad, you don't understand what's going on. This whole thing is changing now. And I guess he got to a point where he thought this is not going to work here. And so he decided to sell. The buyer's name was Donald Sterling. At some point, my dad said he was coming down, you know, book us some time at Lubbock's, which was a big restaurant in San Diego, but on a morning, sky's a little weird. In the three years, they had been in San Diego. The clippers had posted a poor but bearable 114 132 record. But under a Donald Sterling ownership, that would come to be known as a golden age of clipper basketball. I felt the year that I was there in urban, the team didn't cut corners. They weren't telling us that, you know, cut the budget and, you know, watch spending on this or that and that that's what dramatically changed was certainly about the team. For the biggest problem was I think with a bit more spending the money. We need to do buy and stuff like that. The first year he owns a team and we also were told don't cash our paychecks because they won't, they're not any good. Just hold on to them and we'll tell you when you can put them in the bank. The absurdity of it all only reinforced the mounting failures of the Donald Sterling owned clippers. I'm comfortable here and I'm happy here and I just want to stay here in San Diego. Does this mean that the team will stay here indefinitely? Absolutely. Sterling, absolutely did not. And though he would remain in San Diego through the next two seasons. "Navigating the team's personalities prove difficult. But what troubled bald west head most was not whether the Lake a team was Magic Johnson's or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's. But that the liquor team wasn't his. Because for two years, coach Paul west head had kept a secret. It was a revolutionary offensive scheme that he had created while coaching during his off seasons at LaSalle. He called it the system. When I was at LaSalle in the summers that I would go down and coaching Puerto Rico. And the way they played. I mean, they played fast. They wanted to shoot fast and my eyes popped out. I said, oh my gosh, I was thinking about this. And one of the things I learned, you're going to be a fast break coach, don't have a lot of plays. In fact, don't have any place. The more plays you put in, the slower your team goes. So there's a kind of direct proportion to that. And fortunately, coaches think that the bigger their playbook, the better they are, the more competent they are. And that may be true, but if you want to run the system, you better have a one sheet of paper playbook. And that's what you do. Westhead had never fully implemented his system in college, because both established coaches and players were reluctant to embrace it. When I first tried to put it in, a coach at old dominion university sunny Allen, who was a fast break coach and he did say to me, and if you're going to do this, you got to be a little crazy because you're going to get left at. Nobody really wanted to run fast and play like this. They all wanted to follow the ritual of grinding it out. And to be honest with you, it was still going on today. But after the team's difficult second year, Paul west had made the decision that would define a brand of basketball that would become the most heralded in NBA history. The start of my third year, we had training camp in Palm Springs at COD, which is a college of the desert, and I made the decision, you know, established head coach and now into my third year, I said, I have to do something to give us a boost and move into the championship level again. So I put the break in and I do remember and I talk about this in my book, the speed game. At the end, I figured, well, let me really show them we're going to be a running team. So we ran lines at the end of practice up and down, up and down, up and down, which a lot of high score college teams do. So we did it a series on about a ten or 12. And the players are staggering to the locker room and in Korean comes over, puts his arm around me and he says, Paul. I don't do lines. He walked away. So I learned it a number of things from that a, he didn't call me coach. He called me Paul. Which, from what I hear, the only person he ever called coach was John Wooden. That's fair. Two, he was being honest enough with me to say, and if you continue to do this, we could have a problem. And I surely didn't want to have a problem with Kareem. So I went back and reflected and I said, well, I'm never going to run lines again. So we didn't. If you think that Magic Johnson and the Lakers may have taken to west heads fast brake system as a natural fit. You would be wrong. After a two or three or four days, there was resistance among the players. They didn't like it. They objected to kind of on their side to their credit. It was something that they were unfamiliar with. And it was hard. On my side, I was trying to convince them if you just work harder, it'll get easy. And it's like a lot of things. You have to push, push, push, push, and then you're on the other side of it, and then it flows. Unfortunately, while Paul west head was their coach, his liquor players would never get to see the flow. They only saw the heart, so we start to season and we didn't start out real well. Unfortunately, we lost our opener to Houston, the team that knocked us out the year before in the playoffs of all teams to lose to. And then, you know, I lasted whatever 15 games. Because more important than losing games, hold west head had lost his star point guard. Magic Johnson. It started out terrific, you know, I was there literally parts of three seasons with magic. And it didn't have a bunch of problems with him. I think people suspected that the way it went down, that it just was one more problem with Paul westhead and Magic Johnson. That would not have been accurate. He was all about winning. He was all about his team, especially but in his rookie year, he was really like a power forward. He was getting everybody's rebound. He was doing all the dirty work. And that's why the players liked him because he was giving himself up for his team. It didn't end well because I had an incident in Salt Lake City with him and my third season and I didn't like the way he was not paying attention at a time out. At the end of the game and we would have lost that game had the Utah Jazz player made the basket. So it wasn't like it was good defense. They just missed. So after the game, I brought him into another part of the locker room without the players around. I tried to give him the courtesy to not say anything in front of the players. And I said, this can not continue magic. You can not be distracted during these crucial times when I'm talking. And he just looked at me and walked away. The next day, Jerry bus put me in his office and fired me. So you could easily say, after the magic incident, I got fired. Therefore, magic was the problem. But I think it was deeper than that. The Lakers were almost looking for a reason to fire me. So magic was the tipping point. I don't think magic treated Weston very well. I think magic undermined him. I think he wasn't very direct with him. He was a kid. One thing that's really interesting. That's going to say is if you look at the NBA now, what happened then wouldn't be unusual now? Like that, that was the first time I can remember a player exercising power over a coach. That was a very new phenomenon at that point. Nowadays, if LeBron James wants Frank Vogel fire, he can do it in a second. You know, if Kawhi Leonard wants ty loo fired, he can do it in a second. Back then, that didn't happen. The coaches, the general managers, the owners and all the power. And Magic Johnson, I think you can make the argument was the first player to have more power than his coach and his general manager. I always saw Wesley got a raw deal with the Lakers. You know, I thought the guy freaking was a really good coach. It would be the first time in his professional career that coach Paul westhead would be fired. The day I got fired, I went home and I was kind of devastated because this is the first time I got fired and you really take it personal. Now I've been fired 14 times. So I don't take any of it personally. I'm a pro. Getting fired. And I'm home with my family and kids left school. They were crying and the whole 9 yards. But a call from the player he regarded as his number one. With managed to lift his spirits. About an hour after I'm home, I get a phone call from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And he says coach, I'm sorry to hear what happened. I want you to know I was not a part of this. And I want to thank you for the time that we were together. That was the

"Fans a marching band that they can hear. It's not just going to be piped in Oregon music. I'm going to give them personalities. Jerry buss would give fans even more. Laker games at the fabulous forum were equal parts Hollywood production, musical theater, and athletic competition. Jerry buss accomplished two incredible things, his first year as an owner. Number one, he won an NBA title, which is obviously an incredible feat in and of itself, but number two, he made the Lakers into LA's main attraction. He created a new synergy between sports and entertainment that thrust the NBA and its stars into the forefront of American culture. There is magic. 39, he's still perfect at the free throw line. He might be the favorite in LA for a few weeks. But he gets all dramatic of the world championship. They're going to have to widen the wall at the fabulous forum to handle another world championship banner. This showtime era is the precursor for what we now know as the NBA. Basketball players are celebrities not just as athletes. If you look at it at the time before magic came to LA and before bird came to Boston, asphalt players weren't celebrities. I grew up a kid in New York. I would never see the Denver Nuggets play basketball or the Atlanta Hawks. It just wasn't a thing. And showtime specifically comes along. And it just changes everything. One thing that hadn't changed was Paul west heads interim coaching status. Even after winning the championship his first year, Laker owner Jerry buss was torn as to whether he would keep west head. His problem was, Jack McKinney. The coach Paul westhead had stepped in for, had recovered from his accident, and bus didn't know what to do with it. To solve this problem, bus once again would turn to his old friend. Ira Goldberg. We had a coach. It was a problem. He liked to drink. So Carrie was having a problem at the time with his coach, got in an accident. And cherry wanted to get rid of him. The press was all over and how could you fire a guy when he was in a bicycle accident? I got to make this go away. Can you hire him? And said, absolutely. We've got a problem with team anyways. The pacers would then hire Jack McKinney, so the Jerry buss could hire Paul west head. Talk about a thankless situation. I mean, one of his closest friends in basketball, slams his head into the cement, going to play tennis with him. And then he takes over and basically, because of his success, his best friend, the previous coach, is no longer invited to coach a team. I mean, that's she experience times a thousand and heartbreaking. Because of the mitigating circumstances. Coach Paul wested was never able to fully celebrate either his success, nor his full-time status as the Laker coach. Because of an unfortunate accident suffered by Jack McKinney. He directs the Lakers to the world championship. But if I had to guess, I would say that both Jack McKinney and Paul west edge names will appear on the championship plaque. Yes, winning was terrific. It was one of the thrills of a coaching lifetime. But it was a mixed time in my life. If I was happy and sad, kind of back and forth. The back and forth will continue through Paul west head's second season, as both he and the Lakers would experience the hardships of defending their title along with the growing pains of a burgeoning dynasty. When you win a championship, whoever you play the next year, even if it's, you know, the team that's last in the league and you should win by 25 points. They have marked this game. They're gunning for you. This can make their season. If we can beat the Lakers, you know, we will have credibility. So every one of the 82 league games, it's the most important game for the opposition. It might not be for you. You know, you're in game 17 and you could care less kind of, but they care. The opponent. So that's a problem. But a bigger problem was that the Lakers would change it. Most notably within the power dynamic between its veteran star, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And the emerging supernova that was Magic Johnson. One thing that's really interesting is when magic came to the Lakers, he was extremely deferential to cream of bougie bar. It was cap this, have that. He's a legend. I'm a rookie, Kevin levon ball. But a year after deferring to the captain during his spectacular rookie year, Magic Johnson believed that the Lakers were his. You are listening to westward on the Dan Patrick podcast network. We'll be right back. I got stuck right in the middle of this scene. Kind of battle of who is number one. And I think I ran into some issues with that. I don't know necessarily with magic, but I think with the rest of the team. From my events, when I treated Kareem. As number one, there was no question. I couldn't take too much credit. I saw the Kareem was the man. I mean, if you wanted a basket, if you wanted somebody to win the game for you, it was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. However, as with magic's rookie year to a second year moving forward, magic takes over. I mean, that's pretty clear. While Kareem Abdul-Jabbar may have been seen as coach west heads number one. It was also clear to many that owner Jerry buss had his own number one. Magic and Jerry buss became buddies. And while that's great if your magic and great if you're busted, if you're another player, especially a star player, you start wondering if he's getting special treatment is just my imagination. Why is he always hanging out with the owner? And then we're in Magic Johnson gets this huge deal. You start saying, I've been here a lot longer than him. I have a lot more MVPs than this guy does. I'm the center I'm one of great players of all time. When magic signed his unheard at 25 year $25 million contract, which was would blow everybody's mind at that time in the early 80s, now would be like a one year deal. I think he never voiced any of this to me, but I think that Kareem was not pleased that management slash Jerry bus didn't treat him. With the same financial high regard that he did magic. So therein a separation or a rift began to take place. I don't think necessarily between Kareem and magic directly, but between how a Lakers were treating him the Lakers would take a step back in west head's second year. "Threw up everything and Jerry tarkanian all of a sudden wasn't really ready mentally or emotionally state of UNLV. Bus would then turn to the highly regarded assistant coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Jack McKinney. McKinney was a highly regarded basketball coach. He had been the head coach at saint Joe's and Philadelphia. It was a really, really good coach, had been around Bill Walton in Portland around Jack Ramsey, in Portland. Came to LA, was thrilled with what he had to work with. He loved Jack McKinney. And the Lakers get off to a great start. The Lakers would jump out to a 9 four record before misfortune would strike once again. Then they have an off day, and Jack McKinney decides to ask Paul Weston if he wants to play tennis. So he rides his bicycle and he stops short. He's not wearing a helmet and he flips over the handlebars and lands on his head on the concrete. This is how early in the end, I mean, it's actually crazy. He was a head coach at Los Angeles Lakers, and he shows up at the hospital as a John Doe. They do not know who he is. You know when he suffered major major damage. And that was the end. With McKinney's head injury, his assistant Paul west head would have to take the reins of coaching on an interim basis. West had learned the game of basketball on the streets of Philadelphia as a youth. And despite never having played in high school while at Philadelphia's west Catholic, he still managed to get a scholarship to saint Joe's, where he played for future Hall of Fame coach, Jack Ramsey. Jack Ramsey, who turned my whole life around as a person and as a coach, so I kind of modeled myself after coach Ramsey. I wouldn't say I always wanted to be a coach. My goal going through college as I was playing was that I was going to be a teacher. I like the classroom and after I graduated from saint Joe's, I spent two years getting my master's. But you know, deep down inside I always wanted to get involved with the basketball and I remember my first possible job interview I called Jack Ramsey and said, hey, can you help me? We said, I'll make a call for you. But you're really not a coach. You're destined to be a teacher. So I don't know if you're going to be a very good coach. And he made the call. Didn't get the job. Instead, it was Ramsay's successor at saint Joe's Jack McKinney, who would give Paul westhead his first big break as head coach at Philadelphia's LaSalle university. I worked for McKinney for two years, and he helped me get that LaSalle job. And it was kind of interesting. He helped me get the LaSalle job, and then he is the one who hired me as his assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers. So even though Ramsay was the one who kind of molded me, McKinney is the one who delivered me. With McKinney out, bald west hit would now have to deliver for the Los Angeles Lakers. I was their only choice by that I mean Jack was injured on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning we had a shoot around because he had a game that night and if I didn't show up, well, the trainer would have been in charge because back then there was the head coach and one assistant coach and they were kind of at least temporarily stuck with me. So I was like a substitute teacher who the lesson plan was left on the desk and I followed the lesson plan. Lakers owner Jerry buss would make very clear that Paul west hits substitute coaching duties would be on an interim basis. After the first game, I talked to Jerry buss and he said, okay, there's a couple more games coming up this weekend, we want you to stay on with us as our coach. And he said, we'll talk in a few days. And I think we won two or three of the first few games. So at least there was a little relaxation. Had we lost that opening game? I probably would have coached my last game. We were losing and with about ten seconds ago, Jamal Wilkes gave one of his classic jump shots that he just flings the ball. A 17 foot slingshot is good. David hit Goliath again. Timeout 78, 78. You'll never know how it would ever go in, but it did. But Paul west hits vigorously would be with the liquor players in particular, they're all star center and captain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Instinctively what I learned about Kareem is you don't want to overwhelm him with your ability and how smart you are or hey, if you would just drop your shoulder a little bit, it might go a little better. So I was at least smart enough to know leave perfection alone. Like, the guy, as his own style, and he is the best in the world. So anyway, that allowed Kareem to seism me up and from that time on, we were friends, you know, we talked about literature a little bit, a little poetry occasionally. But it was always on his terms. If he didn't want to talk to you, just leave him alone. That meant he didn't want to talk to you. So I wasn't pushing. I think that really helped our relationship. He had also won over the new rookie Magic Johnson. Before the two even met. I showed up for the first practice at englewood high. That's where the team practiced then. We had no facility and this was a high school gym that they rented out, you know, a couple days a week. I showed up and Magic Johnson was there. And after practice, I went back to talk to him, and he said, well, I talked to coach Daly. That was Chuck Daly. We knew from the Detroit area. And he said, coach Daley said you were a good guy. Because daily and I coached against each other in Philadelphia. So with Daly's endorsement, you know, magic, you know, welcomed me. More than a month after taking over, Paul west head had the Lakers winning, had Laker owner Jerry buss happy, and had Laker fans in a frenzy. But what he didn't have was an assistant coach. I actually had one of the players trying to help me. I was done Ford. I said, hey, could you check some things during the game? And he did it for a couple of games. He said, 'cause I don't want to do this anymore. While Paul west had had only coached at the collegiate level. The assistant he would ask for had never coached at any. In fact, he was working on his broadcasting career as chick hearns color man for Laker games. His name was Pat Riley. Pat the word incredible doesn't even cover it. This is some kind of a super year. Well, a chick based on the opinions of a lot of people back last April the 19th and throughout the summer, I think the players have really taken that criticism to heart. I asked your bus if we could hire Pat Riley, bus initially was not happy with that. He didn't want to rock the boat. You don't want to get chick bad at anything. Really the boss. I mean, Jerry buss brought the team, but I don't know if he realized he also bought Chick Hearn who ran the team. Eventually, chick said to Riley, yes, you can leave. And that's how that Riley became my assistant. While Paul west had Pat Riley and the Lakers would go on to change the way the game was played. New owner Jerry buss went about changing the way it was presented. Says Jeff pearlman. Jerry buss, he saw this as much more than just sports. He's the first women that ever be a head coach for any period of time left in the game in history, the MBA, But he's an NBA coach. That's what he is to me. And I know that I acknowledge that so the fact that she got to step up because pop got himself tossed I didn't think was that big a deal? Am I misreading? This whole thing Might just being a jerk. I would never say that, you know, you know, I think that I actually agree with you because When? When I saw that it happened. The first thing I thought was wait. Did that already happen before? You know it, didn't she wasn't there Another time that pop got tossed and she took over. I guess it hadn't happened before. Get out. Jeez. Okay, but, yeah, you know, I mean, I think it does say something for, um, You know the fact that there are women coaches in the league right now that you don't think that much of it, you know that That isn't necessarily a big deal. I think that's a good thing. It shouldn't be a big deal. It should be. You know? Is she a good coach and and and and she's obviously done? Really, really Excuse me a really good job there and they really liked her s o. You know, if that's what she's being judged on that she should be Then then, then that's what the big deal is. And I agree with you that that that that's a real turning point will be when a when a woman and I think it will happen, probably within the next 34, maybe five years at the most. That will have a woman as a head coach in the NBA getting a hearing legitimate chance. Certainly, the more you see women getting interviews getting those opportunities. You know, then that'll be more more commonplace, but, uh, yeah. You know, I I agree. I didn't think it was that big of a deal because I think you know that. I don't. I don't know that we necessarily need to celebrate that. I think we should celebrate when she gets a head coaching job, which you know by all, But by all measures she probably deserves it will get a shot at it. Eventually, Man. If I were a betting man, I'd bet she's the one who gets that job you're talking about within the next five years. Um and oh, by the way, it seems like to me almost every single night. There's a Female referee in an NBA game. We've got a handful of them now, and it seems like every time I turn on an NBA game, one of them is doing a job and doing a good job at that. All right. Last thing um we suffered a loss to uni N B. A. If you're any kind of an MBA, old school or old head fan like Yours truly is and you for a slightly lesser amount. Um, Paul, West Wall passed away. Um, I guy who I remember rooting for when I was just a kid. Uh, Celtic guy. Then he went to Phoenix had a tremendous run with the sons. Also a very successful coach in the NBA got him to the Hall of Fame. He passed away at the age of 70 year, and just because his in my timeline or somewhere close I didn't even know if he was 70 years old, and it's a tough laws and a tragic loss for the Sun's organization. His making The Hall of Fame is something that I think should play a role in every single sport. For a guy who like Westfall, with both a very good player and a very good coach. I don't know if he was a Hall of Fame player or a Hall of Fame coach Brian Combined the two it made him a Hall of Famer. I think that should happen more often in sports. Do you agree with my stance on West ball that he's a combo? All of Famer, and that's a good thing. Yeah, it's it's kind of Ah, contribution to the game sort of thing on, And there's no question that that Westfall with with both of talent as a player's talent as a coach and the success he had a zoo coach, you know, he'll always tell you that that that that he should have won a championship with that sudden team in the early nineties, going against the Going against Michael Jordan. But but, yeah, you know, he he had a very good running folk of those capacities. And so you look at the whole thing and you say, what was this guy's contribution? The game, you know is somebody who might have had a better 10 year playing career but never coached. I think you've got to give Westfall advantage because of what he did as a coach, what he did in that in that part of the arena. So yeah, you know, and one of the nicest guys, you know, I I I was really saddened to hear that as well. He was somebody who I always felt like I could call and and and eat, you know, let me know. And you know, he be the first tell you that, uh, some of the stuff in the league now he really saw it with what? When he was coaching to market cousins that just kind of lost You know, he kind of lost touch with where the game was today, But he always had thoughts on a delicate blossom on you know what was going on in the league and I could take this one of the nicest guys you could imagine. I was glad when he went from the Celtics to the sun because I couldn't room for him is the South because I was the next man growing up, So you gotta hate all the Celtics. I kind of liked his game that he went to the other conferences. All right now it could be applied all that great stuff. Let me get one more thing. I did mean to ask you this. Certainly the bubble at you. Did you go down and cover it at all? Or did you do your NBA work from afar? How did you handle the end of the season into the postseason in a bubble? Yeah, I stayed out of the bubble, You know, which was a tough decision, but something that felt they had to do and um and I credit the league. They made everybody very, very accessible. You know, we're all we're all able to get into the zooms on ask our questions and things like that, even if we weren't there, so I did not, but But I thought that we'd get a great job making accessible And and maybe they'll Bill Bill continue some of that here into this year. It's sort of been up and down so far as far as media access goes, But, um, I hope that they can learn something from From the way they handled the bubble and on and pass it on to this year. I'm curious about your thoughts on the importance of both diversification in risk tolerance when it comes to creating long term wealth. My audience are entrepreneurs. Small business owners. They really need to understand. Where diversification in risk tolerance are going to play in their world's good question. It's good concept. I yeah we deal with a lot of times with our clients you know. Sometimes you know when we have new clients or when we're talking to are trying to pitch the new people as well but He'll which really kind of interesting is a lot of people. Feel like you're not in the market meaning in by their terms of the market is just equities That is the only way you can make a return now. It's the only way of long hung to be successful if you do look at you know. Equities will perform better than obviously other asset classes. You know over the long haul. I we kind of showed our clients. And you'd look at you know the Portfolio just the s p. Five hundred since two thousand until now in menu look at the a diversified portfolio. Where it's sixty cord sixty percent Equities forty percent barnes. She may have some. Neil that as well may have some International stocks on the equity side but the sixty forty portfolio actually rob performance. Confide under which really interesting edgy. Do that taking less risk so what. I really say the people is look at times. We go up to seventy or eighty percent stocks. You know there's going to be other times when you make below sixty or sixty forty down to fifty fifty something of that nature. But you don't just believe that by taking risk your get returns for it. And that's something that's it's difficult concept for people to understand especially earlier but careers but it's something once you do understand it's gonna awards over the long haul and fire. Nation is critical. To think about is even when greg sharing this information and you know he might be talking about a one or two percents. You know of a higher return per year. My some people might kind of be like Well is that really that big of a deal and the answer is it's a huge deal as a massive deal over the course of a ten year portfolio. We're certainly seeing that ear and twenty twenty out so we had the market deterioration in Bartsch what happens every start selling because see other people selling and what had been happening since markets back quite nicely so if you did nothing to x. point in a better spot if you properly allocated to begin with The market's always done a wonderful job of making the majority of people and that's why having the right play together is a really good strategy and it's hard right because it's you see other people making money. You wanna make adjustments because no-one wants to feel like they're not the smartest person in the room so they wanna go chase returns. And that's why with you build out a plan and build out a target asset allocation curve. Sticking to it by greg. Bench is the most important thing they could do now. I just want to be very clear. Because over the last seventy eight plus years markets you know been nicely trending up but one thing i wanna talk about and let's stick with you here paul on this one is how can an investor enter and exit a position properly. Because i know that we don't wanna do this often times when you do want to actually get in or get out of a specific position. How do they do that properly. Given their specific time horizon there's probably several different pathways. You go down with this. John but i mean you're talking about specific positions. They usually mean. Someone's investing with money that i'm going to call. It is Disposable because they're now make it a calculated risk on when to get in and went to get out so there is certain timing things and what we see in especially for all your listeners. If they're working or they're busy during the day then they're not making trades during core hours. So it's easy to do sit at home at night. You're on your ipad it. You're looking up stuff. You're doing your own research. Like oh i really like this so you go enter in an order. Now you're dealing with after mark trading hours. So you need to be smart about when you're actually implementing your trade because a good traders know that People who don't do this frequently will push the buttons at odd times of day into especially if they don't understand the difference between what we call market orders versus limit orders. Where you actually name. Your price is people can be caught up guards. We wanted to be careful with that in like getting in and out is in. I always advise against it. Because you're just you're you're guessing. I'd almost rather say hey. Who do you like to bet on the football game. If you're probably just been chance to get that one right your point also about disposable income. I've always been a believer in having your core and then you're explore so you have your core. That's going to be that rightly diversified. Where you're in it for the long haul. This is the long term time horizon. But you know you can have that explore if you really want t know tesha waters in a few things but it should be within that disposable income
