And it's rare that I meet somebody who is really very good at what they do in one area, and then they have this little side thing They do that I had no idea about and that goes for our next guest in an Thomas Did you know? Did you? It seems to me when we talked about this. You were aware of the the photographic talents of Glenn Stevens has as he sent us pictures before. Did I miss it on Social media or what? I think you missed it on Social Media, Paul. He Is a fabulous photographer. I have been watching his work on Facebook and Instagram for a long time now, and I just cannot believe what a beautiful job he does. It's just wonderful it let me be of the many that congratulate you. Glenn Stevens Jr. Who to me? Has been a fine executive director of Mish Auto. You've heard us talk to him in that capacity, a number of times vice president automotive and mobility and that Glenn Stevens Jr. I had no idea you had this talent as well. Good morning, Glenn and congratulations on your new book Coffee table book called Michigan Street. Well, Good morning, Paul. And, yeah, I think it's pretty easy when you have such a beautiful world in a beautiful state around you to kind of capture it, So that's what I try to do, and You know, it's it's kind of a labor of love for me, so I I I've enjoyed it. Well, it is a labor of love, and I'll get into that in just a minute. But, yes, you're right in Michigan. We have some great to Some great scenery, but you have to have a very good I to capture it through the lens as you have, and it's and it's all from an inspiration that you had. From meeting a guy named Manny Dimes. Why don't you tell a little bit of that story? Well, sure, Paul, you know, I think like a lot of people when this tragedy of the pandemic hit, we had an opportunity and I took that opportunity. I'm not going to lie to you. It wasn't easy right out of the gate to grind to a halt with how busy of the lifestyle we live. Right, but I thought to myself, you know, what can I do? You know, how can I use this time and without the pandemic? I wouldn't have met Manny. I wouldn't have had this idea with some friends of mine to make this book and and Manny is battling ALS, and he's become a friend of mine. I met him about a year ago through church. And I said, You know what? I'm going to build this picture book and we're going to. We're going to donate all the proceeds of it. To raise money for a well wheelchair equipped minivan for Manny and his family, and that's what we've been working on. It's a lovely, lovely idea, and it's one of the one of the positives. We don't hear a lot of them, but there are some maybe even many positive stories. That we can draw from all of us having to I know Some people don't like to use the word because it's used a lot but pivot. Pivot to doing something else when we're not allowed to do the job that we love or the job we've been doing and and you certainly Glenn Stevens Jr have done that. With this book, but I I just had no idea that you had such talent. This is this isn't a book you buy because you want to help somebody out and raise money for Manny All that's fabulous. That's That's reason enough, But my point I want to make clearly is Uh, the Michigan Street. Volume one, which means they'll probably be others. This this This is a great coffee table book or even more so a great book to send a friends. Who might ask the question. Why do you live in Michigan? This would be the perfect answer for anyone who would have that kind of question. The beauty of these photographs, the breath of these photographs, just magnificent. Now with the thought in mind that we do want to help Manny and his his machine. Um is there a is that what's the best email address to go to? Would it be? They've been packaging the books and shipping them right. That's great. But please tell me, Glenn, I'm not the only person who's known you for years who had no idea you had this kind of talent behind the lens. Well, I mean, I You know, my dad taught me a lot of things. And I think the most important thing in this world is If you keep your eyes open and you look forward and you look around. It's amazing what you see. And yes, I mean, capturing things a certain way. I actually spent all day yesterday on Mac and island. I took the day off. Kind of, you know, you're never on Untethered all the way from the electronic device, But I spent the whole day.

And of course, I'm talking about Mark Levin and his latest book, American Marxism. Welcome Back to the Paul W. Smith Show, Mark. Paul. I always love talking to you. You You are terrific. He is as delightful at 81, as you could ever guess He is full of life. And full of great stories. Mark really, you know, it's not exactly what you do on your show, but you would love talking with him. There's no question about that. You know, no question. What has occurred to me? Honestly. You are the canary in the coal Mine for America. You. You know what I mean? When I say that Well, that's very kind of you. But we got to figure out how to get out of this coal mine. I'll tell you that, Uh, we got to get people to listen to what you say, because what you say, makes great sense. And I am certain though. I don't have a copy yet, but we'll get it. I am certain that American Marxism follows in the path that you've established that you've warned us about for years. Well, I'm sorry you should have gotten and I will tell you this. I started thinking about this. I started this book 16 months ago. And it's time to start calling it what it is and stop playing games. They are not democratic socialist. They're not progressives. They are not social activists. Uh, these movements whether it's critical race theory or the DeGross movement, they call themselves the green new deal, which is a war on capitalism. The open borders, which is being preached in our universities and colleges under something called black crit. The attack on binary sex is with the transgression transgender movement being taught in elementary schools. I looked at the core of this who started these things. Things don't just happen. It's not just a coincidence. And in every single case, he goes back to Marxism. You look at critical race theory. The founders have it bragged about being Marxist. They're trying to change the propaganda. Now you see. Joy Reid was a complete fraud on MSNBC, she sang. Now this isn't Marxism. In bringing these, these fabulously wealthy authors who have written on the shoulders of this movement while preaching Marxism. They claim they're not First of all, they didn't invent this theory. Secondly, it is. Thirdly. They are among the most wealthy capitalists authors in the country and they make a fortune preaching the overthrow of our system. So if we want to keep our country I thought to myself. What can I do? You know, we only have limited abilities. Paul. What can I do Have my radio platform I've got Fox has got 11 TV. I've got to write on this because that is the most comprehensive way to address this and to make it bulletproof from the radical left in the media. The corrupt media will attack it regardless. But to convey it to our listeners exactly who's behind this the scholarship behind it. Then I provide my commentary explaining what it is and bringing up to the last chapter. And I say, Now, let's do something about it. We choose liberty. So there's 10,000 words. It's a long chapter. There's only seven chapters in this book. It's the longest book I've ever written. Nonetheless, where I lay out specific strategies and tactics in these various areas, look, they're not exclusive. People may have their own ideas, but Literally scores and scores them for how we can fight back because if we don't fight back Uh, we're going to lose our country. I say we're not looking into the abyss. Where in the abyss. We're trying to claw our way out there brainwashing our Children, for God's sakes. Right in elementary school right in front of our faces, and the unions are thumbing their nose and they're saying too bad. What are you going to do about it? We own these schools. These people work for us. It's about time we do something about it. It is absolutely about time. And this is a great opportunity for people to fully understand where Mark Levin is coming from in his new book that's available now just released. Uh, this month, like within the last couple of days, I think American Marxism is his latest as soon to be bestseller. He's had six or seven of them, and that's from the New York Times, which doesn't like him. It doesn't like anyone like him, but they are corrupt. They they will try and knock it off, You know, but I'll tell you what century you go to Amazon. How I'm the number one book, followed by To trump hating books. Followed by Jesse Waters and after him another trump hating books. So three of the top five books at amazon dot com. Trump hating books that have promoted all over our television networks that are promoted on all these other channels. Um they are. They are obsessed with trump. They hate the people who voted for Trump and I'm saying It's even worse than this. I'm saying that they've devoured our institutions, including the media..

"The Paul W. Smith Show watching the news. Maybe it was yesterday. I don't know the days all run together. And and they're out there at the Michigan Central station plugging away and it never occurred to me that they'd be digging up. Artifacts really historic pieces. Some were poured in the concrete building the building. It's been pretty amazing. And and Ted Ryan happens to be archives and Heritage brand manager for Ford Motor Company. Um, and this has been very exciting. Hasn't it been Ted? It has been. It's been great. We've been documenting the things that workers from previous generations have left in the building, and, uh, there's three different categories of things that we found, Uh, like the one more special and we'll talk about in a second and then The artifacts that had been liberated will use that term loosely and have been returned to us by by fans who had taken him a novel Love seeing the station. Wait a minute. I love the way you guys at Ford do these sorts. The artifacts that had been How should we say liberated from the building that are now coming back to us? Oh, you're so nice. You always we didn't. We didn't. We didn't own the building when they left when we have a no questions asked policy if of anything had disappeared, And I just got an email just two minutes before I went on with you with somebody who saw the story yesterday and sent me a picture of an elevator grill. One of the grills over the elevators that he had wanted to know if we wanted it back. And the answer is yes, we do. Oh, isn't that great? Well, that's fabulous. First of all, who even knew. Ford Motor Company had an archives and Heritage brand manager. I mean, think about that. It's the best job in the world I get I take care. My job is to take care of the 16,000 cubic feet of documents and records and 1.5 million photographs and Selection of vehicles and a cool artifact collection. And we we use it to tell stories about Ford Motor Company So the the new Bronco has a goat driving mode, G O A. T. And that came directly out of the archives because early planning documents all had G O A. T at the top of them goes over any terrain. The only military term is that wild. How great is that now? When you heard of the company was going to be buying the Michigan Central Station and rehabbing it. You must have been giddy with joy thinking about all the things that might be found there. I've never even occurred to me. I was. It was great and very quickly After we announced that you may remember that somebody called us an anonymously left the big clock face that have been on the outside of the building in an abandoned parking lot for us to go pick up and We've got a bunch of stories out of that. It's just been wonderful to see all the materials and so let's been down in the building is a crazy collection. Women choose Children choose. Of pre 1934 baseball, uh, a bunch of beer bottles, and there was a very special one was recently found and had a note tucked inside. It reminds me of the old Jim Croce song time in a bottle because this really is Time in a bottle because of that old note in an old pre Prohibition era stroll. Beer bottle. Tell us about that note. Well, the two workers Lucas and Leo, who found it. I've got to commend them because if I found a message in the bottle, the first thing I'm doing is taking that message out and reading it. Uh and they didn't. But there's signs all over telling the workers don't pocket the past and I've got to just say the guys and men and women that had worked down there every time they found something. They're so excited to turn it over first of their management, and then they know it comes to the archives. So they found this bottle And if you will play, you imagination game and the cornice that goes between the ceiling and the wall, that decorative corner board that goes all the way around. In this particular case, the thing was about a foot tall, so there's a big gap behind it and to workers. 1913. They actually wrote a note. It was Dan Hogan and George Smith for the note, saying Dan Hogan and George Smith connected this ceiling, Um, 1913, and then they put at the very bottom of Chicago and did a lot of research. And I actually found that Daniel J. Hogan, who was a plaster who lived on Lafayette Street in Chicago. From like, 19. Oh, three until 1920. So we know that workers came from all over to build the station And these two particular gentlemen left us a note for us to find 100, plus years later. Wow. That's really something. And when you consider what these in this case bottles had to survive, mostly, most of them I think intact. Some of them were actually Coated with concrete in and embedded in some concrete that was that was poured. They were. There's a liquor bottle that whoever was working on the job site that day, and, uh, the workers all and the management all kind of laughed. It was like things that's been a little bit more laxity. He polished off the last of his liquor, and he put the bottle in the wall and he became concrete ng over it, so It's a little bit different, uh, talk about high destruction techniques. Talk about hiding the evidence they did while we were at the station yesterday, though, too we found a cache of over 4000 train tickets that had been tucked up in the ceiling. One of the one of the guys pulled down a ceiling because we're having to reduce so much of it and all these used expired train tickets came fluttering down so The ticket station master at some point in the twenties, right behind the ticket office. He got tired of keeping the old one, so he just choked him to event up into the ceiling in the room next door. Ted Ryan Archives and Heritage brand manager for Ford Motor Company. Will you open a small little museum inside the Michigan Central station so that when people come there to either do business or whatever it is that they will eventually be doing in this very active building. Well, you have, like a little museum with the things that were found along the way, right there on location. We actually already have one at the community center That's in the factory, which is just a couple blocks down from the Michigan Central. There have been discussions on potential small museum, but nothing is is. Nothing supporting concrete. Yeah, to, uh, sorry I had to go there, but I like it. Nothing is firm yet to to to know if that's going to happen, But we're also doing things like finding ways to preserve and protect selections of the graffiti. Because, you know, yes, we're documenting the early construction. But the graffiti became such a piece of the building as it was used for film and video that we wanted to find a way to document that era the building as well. Wow. That's fascinating. The best job in the world. I'm not kidding you. You know what You better keep that between us, Ted. They may not want to pay. If you have so much joy in going to work, and you'd probably do it without getting paid. Uh, that dog has crossed my mind as I find something really cool and send it off. And I'm so excited and giddy about it. None of my maybe tone it down a little bit, but no, I've got the best job in the world. And telling the board story is great and there and Ford's lucky to have you there to tell the story. Good for you. But thank you Much. Thank you. Pre Prohibition era beer bottle stroll Stroh's. We called it growing up. Bottle found during the restoration with a note inside and, uh God Bless 10. You know as bad as we all think we've had it and we've had it pretty bad with the flooding and all the annoyances that have come up from Mother Nature and our Seemingly inability to deal with a lot of rain. Be that as it may well, get to the bottom of that We're not going to let this go. But as bad as it's been for us, it's worse for others. Including the people who are out there, working. Including At least One DTE worker who we've not been able to get the name. I asked Dan and she's looking, but they may not have released it. But A D T worker working on our behalf. To get the power back. Died. You probably saw that or heard that by now. So as bad as it's been for everyone, it's not, thankfully, been that bad. The other people who are working hard. The people on the roadways. That's very dangerous, too. That is something that I have to remind us all about that When we come upon workers, they're working on our behalf to make things better. And in the past, when workers were out on the roads, people were swearing at him yelling at him. That's just crazy. Now, believe me, It's been a generally crazy time for the last year and a half. Whatever Covid excuse were using there is no excuse. Yell at the people who were Working on power. 50,000 people. T customers still without power about 50,000. And those workers that climb up and work on those wires. One died I know that Diane Cross worries about things like that. With her job as spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation and always being very helpful to us under the toughest of circumstances. And Diane Good morning. Thanks for coming back. I know how busy you are. Slowly but surely we're going to see some normalcy. Good morning, Paul W. And let me also add our deepest condolences to the DT families that were affected, and those people do truly risk their lives every day as you are road workers and that I can add to what they go through. People also throw things At the workers. Oh, my, Believe it or not, that the water? Yeah. Thanks from there, throwing things at the workers that are trying to help things get better. Don't I'm really at a loss. That kind of frustration that we we all feel it. But the idea that common decency just is very often lacking, But we do have some very good news that westbound did reopened last night about 4 20. Westbound 1994 between I 96 Michigan Avenue and Dearborn going from Detroit to Dearborn. We do have one small spot that's has still has the right lane closed near West Grand. Where we had to do some repairs, but we hope to have that reopened by tomorrow. So that will have all three lanes open eastbound. Unfortunately, another story, it turns out, he had quite a bit of damage about 300 ft across all four lanes. Of east from 94 near Warren. We have to dig up the roadway and, um, put down new gravel support because the water just eroded all of the earth kind of underneath that section, And so it's just kind of collapse. The roadway did. So we're having to rebuild that. So it could be at least a week week and a half before we can have eastbound that 94 open going from Dearborn into Detroit. If anyone ever questioned the strength, the damaging ability of water they.

"You're hearing the Paul W. Smith Show News Talk 7 60. Wjr. Well, everyone's been hit hard, but of course, we've said along the way small businesses have been among the hardest hit by this pandemic. And we have checked in with the president of the Small Business Association of Michigan, Brian Kelly a number of times and he has said from the beginning and always has believed that small business owners Are the ones who know best how to run their businesses. And it's time to reiterate that and so we welcome the president of the S B A. M. Brian Kelly. Good morning, Brian. Good morning, Paul W Great to be on the show. Thanks for having me. Well, it's our pleasure. Always. And now we're seeing that light at the end of the tunnel. It isn't a speeding train coming right at us. But It's also, uh, dependent on a lot of things for the people you represent to get their business back the way they want and need it to be That's right. Small businesses are literally the lifeblood of our economy at the the, uh, Foundation of our communities, and putting them back in charge of their businesses is so important. It's an important step toward this long road to recovery. And do you see, uh, any hurdles that are being put up by government action or inaction that Causes you concern representing the small businesses. As these last seven businesses sit down dining entertainment related that sort of business. Get going. They're having a extremely difficult time finding employees. In fact, we just completed a survey among our members and about half of them. Have listed the difficulty in finding employees as their number one concern right now. And of course we You know that That's a multifaceted problem. But at the top of the list, they report that the fact that they have to compete with their government. And finding employees is, uh, is so frustrating for businesses said now it's like kicking them when they're down. So it is long since time to return this unemployment system back to what it was pre pandemic levels. Yeah, it is what has to happen And they are feeling the brunt of the government mistake. I mean, it's the unintended consequences. It was a great idea initially. But it just went on and on and on and kept getting renewed and renewed and renewed, and we ended up as everyone well knows by now. Doing something that just isn't ever good, and that is paying people to do nothing. It's never good is not good for the economy. It's not good for business owners. It's not good for employees. And their families. You know that that survey that I was just telling you about that we work. We're actually going to publish it. Later. On this morning, It showed not only that employees that lack of employees was the top concern. By far no other issue even came close. Do you think about what that means about our prospects for recovery is is Coming out of this pandemic. I mean, people are hiring. That's great news. But what is really concerning is that Yeah, You know they if we don't rectify this and rectify it very quickly. Businesses are going to have to figure out a way to operate without as many employees and so I'm what I'm concerned about is that we'll get to this fall, The unemployment benefit will naturally expire September. 4th is the date when it will. When the federal unemployment the support will Will expire well, by that time these jobs might be gone. They might have given away to innovations or changes in practices or automation or some other thing that You know, these jobs aren't just going to wait for people. And so I think we might miss. There's a golden opportunity to get people back to work right now. Brian Kelly with this president of the Small Business Association of Michigan, and I'm wondering, I haven't asked the question yet. You're the best guy to ask right now. After all of this free money after all of these payments to people to not work Has this affected the wages being looked for, or even demanded now by people coming back to work for the small businesses. Well, we heard anecdotally that, um, that there there was a change in expectations up and down the the pay scale and really businesses have responded the same. Survey will that will publish a little bit later on today has has indicated that over half of of businesses that have lost significant revenue, significant income in the last year have still increased wages to their employees to try to attract More in, so I think that they're doing their part. But here's the thing, Paul, you can't. Uh, you can You can compete with wages, but you can't compete with 100% time off, and I think that's the purpose Getting lost in. This is that businesses are going out there with $20.22 dollars and 24 hour an hour offers for employees and still not able to keep and retain employees because the incremental benefit of working at $20 an hour is only three hours and 45 cents an hour because the the unemployment benefit as the equivalency of 16 55 an hour Wow. Well, I keep going back to what I have said, and I've said it since the jobs bank Um And I know that workers gave up a lot. There was a lot of sacrifice. They gave up benefits They gave up money. And that's how the jobs bank came along. But it just wasn't a good idea to have people sitting at home, have their kids seeing them sit at home and think that's how we make money. We sit at home and don't have to go work anywhere. And it wasn't good there. I had that argument with beloved Ron Gettelfinger, who fought so hard for his Members of the U. A. W But I think it all comes down to that again. And here. We've created a circumstance in a situation where you're talking about people getting more per hour, not working than working. And though this may have in your own words, Brian Kelly changed some things. And some of the small businesses have stepped up and offered more money. Not everyone can afford that. Whatever you said. It was $16.25 an hour or whatever the figure was. They can't afford to do that and still higher the same number of employees they had pre pandemic. Yeah. I mean that our survey that we're publishing today shows that 63% of our members head a decline in sales in 2020 is compared to 2019. And 34% of them had a decline in revenues of more than 25%. And so at the same time, they're getting hit with with inflation. And if you know small businesses are not They are not luxury. There are a necessity to our economy, our communities, our people, our families, and that's why this is so important. We get this right, sure and a ton of pent up demand. There's a ton of opportunity. We cannot afford to miss this economic recovery that the pent up demand that could push it economic recovery right now, and we can't just assume it's going to wait for this fall. Well and Brian The ugly truth is that interest rates are going to start going up, and that's not helpful to small businesses who depend on loans and other things just to keep their companies going. Uh, and over online and we kept our distance and try to keep safe. Best weekend. I thought And and I had to write a column for today's paper, and I had to write it Thursday. So imagine writing about the Super Bowl several days before it happened, But I got it plenty right eye guy said It was kind of a try effective that I thought that the game would be good in that Tom Brady would win. And I thought that the halftime show would be okay and a little eccentric, But people who people like the weekend love did on then, of course, the commercials. I thought we would do Okay, even though some of the big guys like Well, Budweiser didn't bring the Clydesdales, but I thought the commercials were pretty good. Did you think that commercials overall We're pretty good. Yeah, There were some ads that were pretty good as a whole as a group. Maybe a little below average because there were some bad adds, um, the Skechers. Ad with Tony Roma was kind of bad. The only CEO plane, you know the piano in the middle of a field. That was bad we weight was weird was it was just weird, but we had some great ads. I mean, the Eminem's ad was very popular. We loved the Toyota ad with the Olympic competitors. We, um we like the Jeep ad, and that was very emotional. A two minute spot. So that said $20 million check right there to run that spot. Um, but you know what? You know what one of the one of the keys of that commercial honestly. Is that Bruce Springsteen did it and he doesn't do commercials and one of the problems that they've had is some people complaining. The Bruce Springsteen was very political. During this last election cycle, so They're kind of saying, Well, why is he saying Let's let's meet in the middle if he didn't say that during the last administration, but that's that's what you expect. And that's not how you look at these ads. Nor do I frankly. Right. You look at it for what's in front of you. And it was a very poetic well, the cinematography um the good visuals that you know. In the end, though, they had a map of the United States and they cut off the upper peninsula so apparently opened in the in the U. P is gonna buy it cheap. Everybody's a critic. For goodness sakes. It's not the first time sadly. If the U. P was missing, But I think Olivia Francoise did a an incredible job V. This is the guy that brought us Eminem. This is the guy who brought us. Paul Harvey the farmer. Remember that one. I don't remember what the what? The gist of the Clint Eastwood. One was, but he's brought us classic commercials. And I think he did it begin. Well, The Springsteen ad is the iconic ad. Of the game. But there were other cute, funny Super Bowl, You know, humorous animal kinds of things. The Cheetos ad was pretty good with Ash Ashton Kutcher. And Mila Kunis. It was pretty funny, and you know, there were just the will Ferrell. General Motors spot was just cute. You know, you have to. There was a lot of promo up to it. And some of the pro mo's were not as good as the actual ad. And you saw the editor. Well, that's kind of funny. Yeah, it was kind of funny. I did see some of the teases and seeing the entire ad. Made it much easier to understand exactly what was going on. And I did. I did think it was clever. We have a new administration, a whole different philosophy and let's face it. There's changes in the tax code. Under the Biden administration, and it's my feeling that given everything I've heard so far that it won't just be people making $400,000 arm or that they're going to see kind of a tax increase. What's what's your professional thought? That's absolutely correct, Paul. We do expect there to be changes in the income tax code, especially with what happened on January 6th in Georgia and extensively control the Senate moving over to you. The Democrats. But the tax changes that we expect the low hanging fruit that we expect the administration go after is more centered the estate and gift side which is going to affect many of our business owners, Ondas well as their employees. You know, for instance, you had a piece about Blakes cider. Here was a company that was very, very small at one point, and now it's very large on but that's the type of tax code that's going to affect them dramatically and what they plan to do in the future and therefore effects everybody down the line. Everybody. And I contend that if you make $50,000 a year, you're going to see it or feel it. And frankly, there are other taxes out there that we don't necessarily automatically think of taxes. But they truly are the way they affect our Ability to spend or save any money and that is that there's inevitable that the gas prices are going to go up. We are going to be producing. We are going to be his energy. Efficient and not be able to stand on our own Once we stop. Drilling and getting natural resource is in certain areas that we've kind of got used to, which has helped keep the prices down. So those prices are gonna go up there. So this is not a thing that You know, you might have said, Well, it's gonna affect Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates and all these billionaires, so it's gonna affect all of us. And when do you think these, these changes will go into effect? Sure. Well, there's a bit of a political question. They're obviously we do expect that weaken, bracket it to some degree. So, for instance, we don't expect it to occur before the impeachment. Debate is over. On the other hand, that Biden administration has about a two year period of time and, frankly, ah lot less than that, in order to enact some of their larger pieces of legislation. And their tax piece is one of those they're going to face ardent opposition by the Republicans in the Senate as well as in the House. On. And so they're going to likely want to spend that political capital that they have sometime in 2021 begin proposing tax law changes and again. These aren't just legislative changes. There are certain things that we've seen from the by administration, as we saw from the Trump administration that could be changed with the just play piece of panna panna on a piece of paper. So they're also changes that you've alluded to that could affect a number of tax laws without having to ever go through Congress. Wow. It just means it's gonna be a bit more confusing and we really need to, uh, like I do depend on the professional, so I would never pretend to be able to In this day and age, do my own taxes. I need help. And you guys that you h Y help, and I appreciate that if we focus on this great state of ours on Michigan. How does what happens in Washington, D. C. Affect things here directly? Sure. Well as we saw from the state of the state address yesterday evening, Governor Whitner has substantial plans on what to do for the budget and, more importantly, for the covert response. Republicans have countered with their own plan that is somewhat approximately $2 billion less. But that money isn't conjured out of thin air. A lot of that money is coming from Washington, D. C right now his country We're spending a lot of money, which is appropriate when we're facing a pandemic. And again that money itself doesn't get conjured out of there, even though in the short term, sometimes it seems like it does what this means is that this bill is coming due. For the for the country and that and with the Biden administration in place, we expect to see substantial changes in the income tax, but also in the estate and gift because a lot of people don't focus their attention on that side of things. S O that effects Michigan Because every business that supports the automotive industry and manufacturing and all of those businesses, many of them are family owned, or they've been family owned, and that will have a direct impact on although so, what we see right now is for the business areas. The clock is ticking. And now is the time to start doing that planning before. Legislation gets changed in the planning is no longer Bible..

Really with all the we try to do the relentless, positive radio. There are those negative stories that are out there and have to be told and one of them again. Another Another store closing. And they have now debuted a new spicy grilled chicken sandwich because I said in the chicken wars The Popeye Chicken sandwich beat the chick fil A. Yeah, they opened actually, like a little restaurant there. So suppose I read just in passing and one of the magazines all they've got a great chicken sandwich like one of the best. So they seriously have one of the pest chicken sandwiches. It's a long drive for us, but we've seen on several occasions like on a Sunday afternoon have driven down there to get their chicken sandwich. All good chicken sandwich, the currency dairy store, currently farmed area and they have the store now open like you can get ice cream and so on there, uh again, they're gonna be opening. I think their restaurant now, with the restrictions being lifted to some extent, I'm sure they're gonna be opening. Sit down. Should you could do the carry out and their sandwiches are awesome. We can always depend on them for The information that we're looking for a straight shooter. That certainly sums up the U. S attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Matthew Schneider and attorney Matthew Snyder. Which always a pleasure having you on board even when it's to talk about that. Such good stuff like this one. Good morning to you, sir. Good morning, Paul W. It's always better to talk about good topic. But then again today we have to talk about a bad topic. Yes, we do, and that's unfortunate, but it is what it is. And in in this case, your involvement. In the investigation. The probing of whether in this case our Michigan residents engaged in some of the violence in Washington, D. C. What can you tell us up to the minute up to this Friday morning? Well, first and foremost, What's important to know is the public needs to know that we're looking for their assistance. So if you know of people who from came from Michigan to cross the state line to commit acts of violence, we're asking people to call the FBI at 1 800 call FBI. We'll go to tips that FBI dot doves and I'm not talking about peaceful protesters, people who went there to exercise their first Amendment runs. I'm talking off folks who engaged in acts of violence and we're currently working with our partners in the FBI, looking at the situation and identifying folks from across the country and it's a work in progress. You make a good point, Matthew. And that is there are a lot of people who went there with the best of intentions and are as appalled as the rest of us when they saw all of the video footage. The photographs of the people who went there with all of the worst intentions and it's good to realize that we're looking at at least Two different factions there. Some that went with this in mind and others who fell into it, and then the others who didn't participate in any of the violence or any of the bad thing. A lot of people in your own words travel to Washington, D. C to express their First Amendment rights. Versus those people who, as you put it in the legalese you had to use crossed state lines to engage in violence. And if somebody knows about someone who has done that Then, in fact, they need to call 1 800 Call FBI 1 800 Call FBI and they can remain anonymous. They can submit a tip online that tips that FBI dad Gove as well. Because you're looking for information information that I last heard that you had was that we were looking at, I guess about six people. At least six people from Michigan who were among those arrested in and around The U. S Capitol building. That's correct. There have been people arrested in D. C and it appears to us that those are crimes that were committed in D. C. But we're looking at something entirely different, and that's whether or not crimes were committed, but they were connected to Michigan. So that means that they're in case there was a conspiracy to commit an act of violence. Let's say a plot was hatched in Michigan for folks were deciding. Let's go out to D C and bust into the capital and that crossed the state lines. I mean, I'm working with my colleagues across the country to try to identify That as well. But to your point, there is a big difference between peaceful protests and protests with violence, and we saw that this summer. Lots of people came to the Detroit area and they engaged in peaceful protests. And that was just fine. But when we saw people go to Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles and torch police cars and light the federal courthouse on fire and assault federal officers, then you crossed the line. That's something entirely different. We're seeing in Washington, D C people, assaulting federal officials, police officers and causing great damage and that is the type of thing that is completely unacceptable it I found it personally disgusting to watch that footage and there's lots more footage to come. I mean, the U. S. Capitol has plenty of cameras. The FBI and the Capitol. Police will be taking their time to review all of that footage. Both they're all the traffic until justice is done in this case. It's and it's not pretty for the Capitol police we've already had resignations and people who would have been fired otherwise. But to hear this morning is at least for me. Catching up from Detroit news story from Late last night. That. In fact, two days before the pro President Donald Trump insurgents at the Capitol, the Pentagon actually asked the U. S Capitol police if they needed National Guard manpower. The FBI asked if they could help when things started looking bad, and both were turned down and e don't know how anyone's going to figure out that made any sense whatsoever. Even from the earliest footage when we didn't see any violence, we just saw ah lot of American flags and trump flags and we said all right, well, they're being very mindful and respectful. It's it's what was going on inside with a different group of people that Led to all of this mayhem, but And it's from your standpoint as a U. S attorney. You have to look at some of this, And as you said, you watched it in discussed, We all did. We went from the gambit. We ran the gamut of emotions from first disbelief to disgust to fear. Two. Anger to sadness. On the other hand, it ended up when the vice president stood tall and said, Let's get back to work. We understood That democracy, one democracy prevailed. And in America, we are better than this. We might have forgotten it for a little while, but we know it now. We are better than that. Paul W That's exactly right. And I think my prediction is that what you will see, just like after the September 11th attacks there was there was a 9 11 connection. After President Kennedy was assassinated, there was the Warren Commission and there was a thorough review of what happened and what went wrong. And that's exactly what needs to take place here in Washington, D C. With the capital. There needs to be a review of what did they know? And when did they know it and what actions were taken by the Capitol police and other folks to make sure that the building was secure because clearly that perimeter was breached and lives have been lost because of it. So I hope that our friends in Congress and elsewhere will be taking a close look so that this doesn't happen again. I mean, Inauguration day is not far away, and we need to make sure that that day on January 20th is also states. I'm certain that they'll be planning for that. But it's triple planning now. Well, and I hope they spend a lot more time on that than trying to impeach a president who's leaving anyway. Or do the 25th amendment or anything else. There's a lot more to be concerned about right now, rather than just being able to score your victory that you've been trying to score since this man became president, and that's aimed at Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and whole bunch of other Democrats. There's so much more to be concerned about. I need to ask a quick question for an update. Matthew Snyder, U. S attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. It was October, FBI investigators forded a plot to violently overthrow the Michigan government as well as kidnapped our our governor, Gretchen Whitmer. In all 14 people have been arrested, charged in state and federal courts. Where is that? That is in the process of going through the normal court system, just like any other case, And right now, some of those defendants wish to be let out on bond and the Justice Department's position is no. You're a flight risk. You're a danger to the community, and you didn't need to be held and detained without bond pending your trial. And so the defendants have been arraigned. They will go into the normal course of the trial, and then it's up to them. They have a constitutional right to have a jury trial..

We are still the standard bearer for capitalism. So the people who like us were appalled. The people who don't like us were probably thrilled. Seeing What was going on. But democracy has prevailed. Marie and in in a moment we will check in with Simon Owen live from London, a Fox News contributor in a W. J. R. Contributor. About the world reaction, but I don't think there were any major surprises in terms of people being appalled at what they were seeing. Maybe you've seen something. I mean, every everybody everybody was appalled, right? And I happen to have a family overseas and a two or three different places overseas, and all of them messaged me saying, you know, we're so sorry to see this. We're just so sorry to see this. Which is another reason Why not that Not that We need to always do things based on how we look or how the world reacts. I just think For the world reaction, But more importantly, for how all of us feel in this country pretty beaten up at this point, we don't need any more of the theatrics that Pelosi and Schumer calling for I think we get through this in a Mostly now quiet and as best as we can peaceful way, and we move on with the transition of power, and you're not going to do that. If, in fact, we continue to follow the idea that they are pushing for impeachment again, or for him to be removed from office, saying he's incompetent or mentally unstable or any of the other stuff. That In fact, they've been saying for a very long time anyway, and we already know the vice president is not going to step up and do what has to be done. And then and then you've got whatever cabinet level people remain. I don't think they're going to vote to do that, because mostly it's just not going to be good for the country. I don't think so. We'll see how they try to spin that today. But that's that's going to be one of the big stories on that is the push that continues by people to say they've got to get rid of the president when he's gonna be gone anyway. I just don't quite understand how it it Makes a lot of sense to do anything otherwise and then, in the coming months, there's the court of public opinion. They will really be the final judges of all this right, right. And in in history with some with some distance with in history that there will be certain things that this president did that were fabulous and some things that were not Um, Unfortunately, there's not a lot of fabulousness ever talked about him in the mainstream stream media. But people are aware and frankly, when the tax situation changes and Ah lot of other stuff that happens that will S o people might have a new appreciation for the things that he accomplished that have been Pretty much glossed over now and and also ruined by you. His said his personality I think I mentioned before that we're talking about. In many cases, personality over performance is what people see they see the personality. They may not see that performance in the performance in some of his areas in his interactions have been so Unfortunate and bad that that's what kind of stands out for people didn't like him in the first place. But I think that the idea of the 25th amendment being invoked is foolhardy at this time. And the idea of trying to go through the impeachment process with days left. Is foolhardy as well. And we don't need the country to go through that. For ourselves on for the rest of the world, and we don't need to waste the money. That's our money. We've wasted so much of it now looking for Russian collusion and the Ukraine phone call and Everything else. He could be good to get back to that money that we send Washington actually going to good purpose is for us. We don't get it all back anyway. But we'd like to get some of it back for things that we need. Here in Michigan. Yes. We still need our roads fixed. We also need our vaccination. Are vaccines distributed? Absolutely right. Exactly. No more excuses. We have The vaccines available. We don't have the vaccinations. Available, all right, and that's it. That's him. Embarrassing, though it may be, it needs to be dealt with, and there's really known There's no time for finger pointing on something like that. Let's just get it done. And, uh, Let's stop the blame game. Let's just get it done. That's what matters, not who we decide or feel or figure or put it off on. Let's just get it done. I e. Also talked about how tough it is on teachers. Um, you know, there's some people that take shots at him. I love Tucker Carlson. But he was taking a shot of the teacher and probably rightfully so who was off on vacation somewhere? Never wanting to go back into the classroom because they didn't wanna be. Infected and all of that stuff, But most teachers Care and are concerned and worried about their students, their kids. And taking that moment to remember the teachers. Remember the students remember mental health? And schools touched one of our regular listeners. Regular guests, Tom Watkins. Who on two counts here as former state school superintendent and former CEO of the Detroit Wayne County Mental Health Authority and an expert By the way on China. And you say from this from Dealing with your 2.5 year old grandson. You were helping out providing childcare for if you will, and it really opened your eyes gave you kind of a greater appreciation. For moms and teachers, A lot of people probably dealing with that and should take a moment to understand that as well, tell me about your experience time. Well, it was one of those things. That building's been tremendous memories with one of my Three grandson, But Dylan, a real character a joy to be with, But you know, God made childbirth for young people for a reason. And my agent being with 2.5 year old all day long. I was tired. I mean, just thinking about the experience makes me tired and butter rekindles the love and the special memories. We made a pact to really reinforcing how tough it is for. Our moms that are taking care of the Children and all some time taking care of the household and working a full time while certainly these were some great memories that were made I A t the end of the day, I'd longed for the nap. My grandson never wanted to take Grandpa Tom certainly needed by the end of the day. Lonely. Imagine, since we have you and you're an expert in these three areas, at least for us. And I suspect You are happy that there appears to be A better opportunity for a better relationship, although I suggest that the new administration tread lightly and in an intelligent way when they're dealing with China, but that I guess goes without saying, but I said it, but you do look forward to a better relationship with China or so it would seem Well, I think that we have to China makes up 1/5 of all humanity. Second largest world economy coming on strong, perhaps, of pass us. In the next five years. So what happens in China? As we've talked about many times? Paul doesn't stay in China s O. What we need to do is to build a relationship that takes care of America's national interest. Clearly focusing on that. And I expect Joe Biden will continue to put pressure on China to comply with the rules regulations that are set up for all countries and at the same time building alliances which Japan and me in Europe in the like so that we can really come together with our allies. Uh, to to assure the China's plan by the rules. This happens to be 1/100 anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party. On they've bought over 800 million people from abject poverty to the middle class on that has an impact one. What's happening to us here in Michigan in America, So I I hope that we can build a better relationship with China but wants to keep our national interests at the forefront. What we have to bear in mind is they are a different people with a different culture, different philosophy, different way of doing what they do compared to us In the example I gave yesterday that you probably didn't hear early on. Was of Mr Mas, the founder of whether said Alibaba, and he's a billionaire, and he he made the comment that they need to Kind of fix or update or change the way they look at business and some other things, and he disappeared after doing that. Hasn't been seen since October. And it's not the first time that anyone who shows any disagreement with the Chinese government their fate is generally not very good. Yeah, that there's questions about whether he's keeping a low profile for is what they say. In China. He's been taken in for tea, which is usually lose both having having tea with the Chinese Communist Party. But clearly there's a number of challenges we face with China. China, you know, had a century humiliation from 18 49 to 1949 the last 40 years they've come on, like gangbusters on dare feeling their oats today and so navigating this relationship with China is gonna impact the people of China the people of the United States, So that matter All of humanity, So we need smart strategic leadership. We also need part of you rather than just talking about what we're gonna do, uh, to thwart China's rise. Is to really talk about how we invest in the people of America. When we invest in education research development technology, we can out compete anybody around the world and so investing in the American people needs to be part of our strategy. To assure that China's rise doesn't come on America's demise. Absolutely correct. You've said it all along on, but that's something we do have to remember. What happens in China does not stay in China. We doubt know.

Because in Philadelphia the next day, they're honoring at Independence Hall, Abraham Lincoln's greatest hero. A man named George Washington on his birthday. Lincoln says. I'm not missing honoring George Washington, and he risked his life to go there. You'll see a longer on the team, but he gives a speech about uniting the country and says if you don't we don't stand together. You might as well assassinate me and what we know now, when you read the book. That he actually knew there was a plot to assassinate and when he said that, and it's one of the most amazing moments behind the scenes of Abraham Lincoln you've ever seen. I love the fact that even in the midst of all this, they honor George Washington then right after that again, this is where it all kicks in. They jump on this train. They put a disguise on Lincoln. The Pinkerton detective gave Abraham Lincoln's life. I won't I won't ruin how, but it's an amazing moment of their defeat in this secret society. What a great great story the.
