"The driver ended auctions and you don't know it two thousand people like until you're there and you're just shocking aw of what this event is and what this event means and to sit there and to have a race like we did racing tony out of the pits or or avoiding that massive incident towards the end of the race and coming home in seventh place. I mean it felt like a win for us those yeah here's the thing i want to know and paul tracy mentioned the cars you've pass and just your style is so cool. I mean you come over here and you find ways to pass and people will people won't go ways to pass. Maybe sometimes sometimes finding a path that wasn't there. I mean this come naturally chew or is this something that you got an indycar noble and said you know what what else is going there. I'll go there now to be honest with you. It's it's instinct is and i. I feel like i'm very good at finding those guests finding those holes in working around a pack and to be honest with you over racing's new to me so i think as you said earlier when we're talking here rookie. Just you just don't know sometimes you benefit from a and you know. You have passes like you see on t._v. No you racing these guys hard position that was for the lead at gateway and trust me inches definitely know slashed get around and <hes> not clean even raw seeing goes guys like that you know i have high respect to them in racing them so much fun racing with sebastian board a it. How do you guys get along really bad. Ah we we get along great. You know funny enough. We're both european drivers in in a sense because you know he grew up racing there. I grew up sort of racing there era as more of a fly in and we can worry. I would say and <hes> to be honest. We have a lot of respect for each other what he did he he made it into formula one and that that was always my goals a kid and funny enough ever since racing indy-car and coming in last year in working with him i i've had such a huge respect and appreciation for him. I mean he's been literally my mentor throughout the whole season. I can't thank him enough and i can't give give them enough credit. What's been the single biggest thing that stuck out to you so far. Indy-car is it the speed beat at a place like indy. Is you know just the racine how close it is and what's the thing that's really caught your eye this. You're coming into cars or working and it's like one of those things in your kid. You grew up. You always wanna be racing against those guys that you see on t._v. For me it was funny enough. I seeing people like will power scott dixon <unk> banke and growing up in outracing erasing them historic car feeling indycar gives you mean it's not like a formula one car. It's completely different. Drives different feels different. It's not quite as fast but slot more playful in a sense that you cited around and you get to be the boss of the car and that that's that's the joy of it and and the experience of the paddock.

"So I mean, yeah, I had a group of friends that I love an ode always find owed always find groups of friends at Booz usually, the kind of the costs a little bit. You know, and the kids would hang onto the trestle smoking base. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Right. So we were cool. But that's what you were. Yes. And then and you were sad, a lot of the time because of your parents in life. And being twelve and yeah, just just a little angsty kid. You know like a went through my my my all my phases. All my EMA faces and gothi phases and will not not gifted athlete at that time, heavens, no heavens. No amazing. Not I'm not I'm not a gifted at least at all. I've, I've worked at. Being athletic and, and stuff like that. But just no natural scale whatsoever. Probably in anything, maybe to talk. Can say to talk that's that you were born with that then, then work that it's okay. So what happened? And so then, so then my brother's is online, and he's looking at these wrestling schools in England. And I remember I remember even the Email that he rose to Andrew Baker, who's the person who wrote who run blue you k- hammerlock, and he was saying, like, I'm not a dream, or whatever I genuinely understand the amount of work that goes into this. I just want to give it a try and what an Andre writes back, and he's like, okay awesome. But they're also opening a school in, in Ireland impre worn by Fergal Devitt and Paul Tracy for debit, who people might know us in balloting. Sure willia-. And so I'm like, okay, well, I wasn't going to be allowed to go over to England bought I go down to Bray that's only an hour half away. Mabuza whether you have to be sixteen. I'm fifteen at the time. Like I can just lie force. Listen that's the game. You've trying to enter anyway. So I mean if you can't I mean, it should be a test. Right. If you can't talk your way into wrestling school hours, it good to talk people into the arena. Good point. You gotta be good on the stick for fuck, sake point, of course, then to them, I'm strategizing things haven't changed. So I'm like, oh, if I say, I'm sixteen they might ask me for I d. So let me say up seventeen and then they won't write this ward. So that was the plot. So anyway, so I go down. I go down. I'm so we had just come off of tough-enough. Maybe it was the festival. I was gonna ask you, so you knew what wrestling school was tough enough. Yes, I loved them watch. I watch all the episodes of that. I cry when the guy that's got cut and stuff. Yeah. Yeah. And, and like beyond the Motte was, was out, then round movie. Yeah. That movies incredible to until you just expected this this hard ass lifestyle. Right. And you were ready for it. You wanted like you wanted to be put through the ringer bright like daddy for taking bumps you ready to. And you thought, oh this, you knew it was going to be paying like there'd be paying involved. Yes. And you wanted like you wanted to prove your mouth because like you would look at that and you would look at the people that quays, and you will want to be like that, I won't be on twelve phone be. I want to put be put through my paces. And so I'm expected to go down to this warehouse probably a sign on the freaking big ring yet with, of course, a wrestling ring at a wrestling, or you're going to only natural to assume that there would be one. And so I walk into Saint Andrew's school hall, and there's a bunch of just skinny lots just with, with. With their hair half grown. Oh trying to look like the hardy boys and they six blue patterned mats on the ground, and then there's Fergal twenty years old skinny as a whippet the Harry Al ads, and that was my introduction to, to rest. No big ring. No big ring..

"You know? Like, I said, it's tough transition. So, you know, I know that I think it an any Carla about the, you know, I'm not kidding myself. But I know that I you know, I can do pretty good job in sports car, and and I would like to do some more racist. But I'm not I'm not out there actively looking. Yeah. Understood. Sure. Yeah. Comes along, and it's gonna be fun. And like this deal is a bucket list thing to do that race. Awesome track. Awesome ountry crazy fans. So it's gonna be a lot of fun. You know? And and Paul let's let's not forget, the simple fact that why you're such a standout TV racing commentator is the fact that you're you've been in combat before and you're still competing, and you're still out there. I mean that that's obvious to anyone that listens to you and watches to you that you know, you've been to the dance you've done this stuff. You know, you know, when you're doing your IndyCar stuff you've been out there, you know, with the with these guys, and this just kind of reinforces that other end of it, doesn't it that you're getting out there, and you're still you're not done, you're still competing. And I think that you'd have to agree makes you a better TV commentator, doesn't it? A lot of the drivers that talked to pit and stuff like that. Tell me a story about I said, listen every single trick in the book. Whether good or bad trick what you're thinking before you even do about doing three three stuff happening on screen at before. You can see it come on before it even happened. That's a good. I for for that. I really didn't think I would be good. As a me. I don't know. I just try to explain things in simple way. Yeah. Didn't work. Yeah. No. That's that's kind of the Yang and Yang between towns in an I get very technical. And and I try to keep things simple strategy stand kinda works. Good for for both of us for for the fans. It's a it's a it's a good. It's a good chunk of teamwork peachy, and as I say you've been a friend of ours. An awful long time, and we were there at the beginning. And we're still on the air here with race line twenty seven years after we started. And it's a great story as I say you've been a good friend of the program and a good friend of ours. And we're thrilled to see you're getting back in you don't putting the helmet back on getting other compete and a lot of fans very happy about that to solicit. Thank you very much for these few minutes. And I'm best of luck with men, and we'll be watching once you get back into the TV move. All right. And then I get out of there in li- straight from Orlando to LA LA to Australia and arrive in Australia on Tuesday. And then we're on track Thursday so via the crazy week. But I'm looking forward to the challenges. And I think with the guy driving them with an Australia. I think we ever really good shot at winning our class as long as we don't make any mistakes. "Last year the deal came together to run a couple of transam raises. And then I was just traveling down to Daytona. And I was texting back and forth with Lee dippy from. He said, hey, you wanna run backer said tell me more about it all Morris as a car and Aborisade was going to drive with them and force just crashed his motorcycle there by. Yeah. Firm self so he's backing out. If you wanna do it give them a call. He said come on down. Tickets and can't really pay anything. Dr. No, you can come down and the bucket list race. It's the night. You know? Oh, yeah. Aren't straight to the year. Biggest event of the year off, you know for racing in Australia so ninety one car entered for the race. It's crazy technical hard track. Yeah. I'm excited drive it and Paul the great great guy gnome. He's been doing stunts some self with Robby Gordon the last couple years got a little bit. But he's won the race there in every single class. He's every driven. And so he's you know, he's a kind of an icon down there. And. Kind of beats to zone drums a lot like. We're going to go down there. And and right after the twenty four hour and go see we can win win our class. Well, there will be be excellent. If you could do that, Paul. We Paul Tracy unreachable and radio in case you for some unknown ridiculous reasoning recognize the voice, we've been following you, and and have been stringently on Facebook, and other social media outlets that we know that mentioned in the intro here that you've been training lake crazy. We knew that, you know, you were always, you know, you're always a stocky guy, and you always try to stay fit, and you did a lot of cycling, and what have you? But what's what's been the toughest part getting back to that? Gym, you know, at at dawn's early light in really whipping yourself back into shape. It looks like it might be a bit of attachment has it been really tough to get your cardiovascular endurance backup. Coming back quick. But I mean, obviously, I'm not as light as I used to be in. You know, go to the gym every day. But I just don't really watch my diet that carefully you. Putting on a put on a lot of muscle over the years. So you know, the hardest. The hardest thing for me is always been the diet. It's not about going getting me to the gym or. Yeah. Going on her bike ride is actually enjoy that. But I do I do like I'll do like my food too. And I like to eat, and I don't like to like, you know, Keith really is is been to watch my diet for the last couple of weeks. I haven't done a ton of park cardio. Okay. Over the last five or six years and just get thrown light back over my bike in the I ride I had I hadn't written the bikes since last year before the trains Amre says I did right, right? You know, your first couple of ride is just in agony long burn your lights Vernon but got three or four rides. Everything starts cone back in just good. The riot get longer push a little harder and feel you know, feel better. So uh. It's so it's overdue. You know, how much have you missed that competition of, you know, strapping in and getting out there, and you know, and and maybe bumping and banging with guys. I mean, have you have you really missed that PD? Certainly did over the first couple years when I stopped driving missed it mentally. But of course, that kind of goes away after time, but you know, it's a it's a hard. Transition for. Anybody in any type of career, whether you're a businessman or your sportsman whether you play professional hockey or basketball football when you all you like for me. All I did since I was five years old was live racing. That's it. What it could be a racing driver. I don't really have any outside business interests that are time consuming. You know? So my whole life has been about. Throwing rating and then one day when that that all stops Subroto. If if it's a hard transition to what do I now? So a lot of people whether they're in business. Okay. You get used to running business or your business manner. You're involved in stock market. And that's what you thrive on. And that's what you're passionate. And then one day stop over it..

"Ability to to run multiple championships. And so. Denigrate job, making sure there's no schedule conflicts. This is near the second year that they've been able to make that happen. So it it's good for someone like me to be able to run both championships and and ultimately compete for a championship in both. Conversely, you know, is there any challenge at all in going back and forth between them because the you know, the rules are similar the cars. I think maybe jinx myself a little bit last year running. Fulltime in in. Both of 'em says championships, I was I was literally, you know, hand in two helmets in hand all weekend running the Ford and Alexis, but anyways, it it's it's far more difficult. Running two cars in the same weekend than it is to run two separate shave. It's a good point this way, you're focused on you know, one car one program on the weekend. It would seem to me, you know, that me up and tell me if I'm wrong sports car racing in North America seems to really have caught a nice wave here. I mean, it's always been popular. But you know, it's kind of taken a back seat to some. But just seems the last little while sports car racing has really started to hit a spark here. Would you agree with that? Yeah. I agree completely. And it's taking of course, taking a few years to get here. We've seen this. You know, the the sport sort of in flow a bit. But right now, both, you know, both of sports cars championships United as we've already touched on the both got full grids that's true in every category. Type. Category. GT category, you know, massive grit, than so it's it's great to see a lot of manufacturer participation, and you kinda got global homologation as you touched on earlier with TD three cars or cart teams can in run them everywhere in the same cars, and conversely, you've got topped we mentioned for the Mike one on top teams like Penske Ganassi definitely have very serious input and entries into the sports car realm. And there's going to be more. Yeah. So I think you're gonna see more and more involvement in the prototype category in coming years with some some new manufacturers. And I think the three and the four platforms just think they'll be strong for a while. Yeah. I think you're right. You're right. Listen kyle. We've run out of time here darn it. And and listen good. "That'll the worst. And. On. That was the most one day when type dick, and I'm I'm glad it's all over L Tober RJ. Thanks for doing this, buddy. We'll talk to you next year. Good talking to you that you got an RJ Anderson. Again, you champion Lucas oil off road racing series for two thousand eighteen four class. And it's still you here with a shelter creek. Jimmy Johnson that guy who benefit and statman use these zeroes in on these drivers when they do move into another series outside of road, how they can read certain lines on the tarmac or on road courses that maybe other drivers couldn't they can the way the way off road series pilots short-course or desert way, they can feel the road the advantage that they have when they happened to a stock car IndyCar from what they tell us statman. It's an advantage that they have over a number of other drivers. I've heard it said that guys that race in the dirt and have success like RJ has had they have more feline in the inner ear that could feel balanced quicker than the normal driver does. And I signed terrific reports have said that, but I don't know if the case with RJ, I just love it that when he first came into the freak nation. We know who he was didn't know what he wanted to race was just trying to win a race. And now the guy's a champion in categories that he never dreamed of before. I just love it that he's having that kind of success. Yes. Success and fun, and let's face it. He sounded really good in that interview. Go down, may give them a better idea if something needs. To go down with the vertebrae but yes a broken arm and. Two broken ankles are definite, we've got about four minutes to talk about the catch fence step may curious on your take you saw the catch. Fence when we went up there and then it took two hours. To put some kind of I'm being a little facetious chicken wire up there and it spot it just did not look like they should be racing on that track with that repair the fits given. That that's a very popular corner at Pocono raceway for the Indy cars to to launch it you think they. Did the right thing? By resuming that race I'd like to believe they. Did and, whether they did or not I'm just going to choose to believe that they did but it's very telling that Sebastian board as been. Around this, stuff for a long time he won four straight. Championships in champ car he was very hesitant to get back in. The car and I don't, know what was said to him on the phone but he he did make his mind to get back in the. Car and even talked about it after the race when he was. Questioned about it they never took any tight shots to show what was done so yeah I you know I just choose to believe because we know some of these people and we believe in all. Of them I choose to believe that it was done safely Yeah it does look like a tinker toy kind of job. But what's the phrase I'm I'm, looking for here that I'm not getting right it just it. Looked like, a, shoddy job, to the catch fence but at the same time not every track is as well equipped as Indianapolis in. Daytona are to make these massive changes super fast I don't know if it would have even been better replacing part of that catch fence if they had delayed, the race to Monday. Then again fans would complain so. It's you're damned if you do your damned if you. Don't, it was interesting though to see that Sebastian board day, was very upset with? What? He called subpar repair do we know who who he was on the phone with internet shot of him thought it, was a crew member maybe, his crew chief I'm not sure one hundred percent this is a guy that damn near lost his life It in an episode. Motor Speedway statman so needless to say sure there's jitters Yeah, without, question and To think of what they did as fast as they did it in less than two hours with all the people. Working just, the confusion I mean some people listening have been in committees that of four or five people sitting in a room trying to decide on what a letter should sound like and. Nothing got done now imagine the looked like maybe ten people trying to fix a fence. And, do it safely Like I, said I just choose to believe that it was done safely because I don't want to believe that IndyCar would put any of their drivers at risk right but they didn't take. Any pictures of the repairs and generally when you don't want to put it on TV That generally means that You're hiding something but you just don't want to deal with what it looks like Freak nation coming up Kathryn leg Ran her, butt off, at, VR this, weekend sports car race Got her top three crasher third she's on the podium, she'll be joining us here coming up next.
