"Com. PJ tell us what some of your experiences and opening for kiss because obviously that was kind of a dream gig for everybody I would say. Yeah, I mean, definitely for Steve and myself. That was like the, you know, that was the dream. You know, opening for kiss. I mean, I don't know, anybody I know had that dream that it's a circle I keep. So I remember the day getting that call that we were going to tour with kiss. We were in LA about to mix our second record and our manager called and said we got the kiss tour and again going back to the Meadowlands arena playing all these arenas that we did the year before and but this time, I mean, we love to scorpions growing up scorpions. It was amazing, but kiss was that was it for us, you know? So that was a moment. And forget walking into the arena that first day and just seeing all the kiss road cases, like, we're here. And you know, you fall right back into that little kid, a little 7 year old 7 or 8 year old kid, you know, and you're drawn on your face and drawn on your notebook and right in the kiss logo and everything you owned and didn't own, and it's just amazing, you know, hanging out with those guys. Some not so much. Some of them. Hey. But yeah, it was great. The extent of his experiences with Paul Stanley backstage. Yeah, I think I think I got a hate twice. Three months. So I'm happy with that.

"Songwriter. One of the best okay and it seems to come to him very easy. Go ahead, Mike. Before you say Mike, today's set was a great set. You played one new song divider. This is one of the rare bands where I was like, pretty more new stuff. When my new stuff, right? So rare. We're going to play a few more songs. But that's a good place to be. Yeah, it is. And the thing about Joey, your question, it's important. I think a lot of times bans lose the passion. And a lot of times I heard it interview, I read an interview, excuse me, with Paul Stanley, where he actually said, and I'm not quoting, but it's something to the degree of, he said, it's not worth making new records anymore. It's not worth it because people don't buy it. They don't want to hear it. And I played with Boston briefly, and I'm not name dropping. It was great. I played with him in a way. And I'll never forget it. When we would go, we would play rock and roll band and peace of mind. You know, with their beers up in the air. Yeah. I know this one. Yeah. And then we'd go into corporate America, you know? And you would literally see everyone empty out to go pee. Wow. The venue with empty out. And I just thought to myself, that's the first time I realized, like, wow, people don't care. The majority of the new they don't care about the new songs. Unless you make it as good as the old songs. That's the key, right. Here's a thought. Why not write songs that are as good as that? Yeah. Or try to. And I think a lot of binge just kind of give up. We'll striper is it being that whether we hit or miss, we really try to write songs that are comparable to the past that are as good. And it's a tough line because you've got to merge the old with the new. The old sound with the new sound. How do you do that? I have no idea. We're trying to figure it out. But I think some of our new songs are just as good as some of the old songs. And we throw them into the set and people seem to like them. So far, we haven't seen anyone going to pee..

"In this kiss camp. They were inspired by the new york dolls. Which was this band that wore makeup and so they tried a few different versions and styles of putting on makeup in their signature. Look they were playing smaller clubs and a member of their crew started filming their performances. And this is something. Where i say podcasters should i like to do is go in. Listen to an episode. From like four months ago. That i did because i can kinda listen to it with fresh ears. I can listen to. It is close as i can as a listener. And so when paul stanley saw video of himself n even though he was kind of dance around a little bit on stage he realized. Wait a minute when you're on a stage and this is a small club he goes. This is not gonna work on. Bigger clubs again was focused. He's like i'm going to have to be much much more animated and between you and me. I know everybody says david lee roth was one of the best Front man of all time. And i would agree but paul stanley was better because that man was doing it in cinch six inch heels and not only was he singing and he could actually sing but he was also playing guitar. I've seen him. It was amazing. So what what did we learn from that will number one again honing your craft none of these guys who are famous right out of the gate they had to go through and tweak things so again. Your podcast is not a statue. It's a recipe. And when you first start out there probably going to be some things when you start out and then you get feedback from your audience that you're going to change the other thing. Was the beatles made it hard to copy. Because what would happen you have to realize. This is like in the the late fifties early sixties. And what happened back then is somebody would buy an album from so and so and then you would go and learn those songs and then the may be a a competition Another band would buy another album and they would do that. And there were only so many songs because not everybody could afford to go out and buy all these albums and so the in an attempt to maintain their sanity because they're playing the same songs over and over and over. The beatles started playing around with the songs they were playing. They started tweaking them and letting their creativity come in and then they did something that couldn't be copied. What did they do. They started writing their own songs. Why because they were bored. They're bored out of their gourd and for any kind of performer. I don't care if you're a singer if you're a podcast or if you're an actor if you're bored it is going to show up in your performance. So they started writing their own songs so they weren't bored on stage and the other cool thing about that is.

"Because you saw you remained a fan you took our own rankings. And did you know sort of side by side and and compared them. And and i like one album. Maybe more than you did. But we're sort of lined up in our in the way in which it all sort of washed out and what surprised me through those records in the eighties was how much paul stanley saved that band. Because there are a lot of really good songs on those non makeup albums during the eighties. That i sort of gave up on and went into sort of alternative rock ville. That was my thing at that point throughout the eighties. So i pretty much abandoned kiss so until you sorta brought me back because you might want to listen to these now because they're not as bad as you think there lexie some great songs on you make a great point. Paul stanley is sometimes an underrated songwriter and producer for all of his stage antics and his kind of c. Plus guitar playing. He doesn't get the credit that i think he deserves for. Not only keeping the band together as you point out but actually writing some pretty good decent hard rock songs between nineteen eighty two and nineteen. Ninety-two right let's dive into this last time we got together with this top five craziness. You turned to me and said so. Do you have an honorable. Mention caught me quite flat. "You're holding up the cobb he but it's a it's a beautiful thing we've never sung about anything except celebrating life about going against the odds about self empowerment things that to some people over the years seemed trite. But they're timeless and that's why some of the bands that we grew up listening to or were out when we first came out our dinosaurs in the sense that what they were either doing musically or lyrically is just gated dam. We may sing about things that some people think of corny but there the cornerstones of a great life well to to finish up all. I have a few standard questions. That are part of the supporting cast. They relate to la We are known for our movies our food and our climate so a few gets no you questions. What is paul. Stanley's favorite movie. I would have to say using years ago. I loved zorba the greek coins. But i would say that my all time favorite movies would probably be forced gum or shawshank redemption right once. Yeah good good movies with a lot of soul and a lot of hard life affirming. Yeah i remember going years ago with an actress of mine to to a movie and when it was overrun. That's it and she went. Yeah you know. It's a slice of life. And i go by live life. I wanna live life. I don't i don't wanna see some guy. Smoking a cigarette and cheated on his wife away. Entertain me blow something up war. Show me how great life is. But i just a you went to the grocery store and then he came home and not for me. Thanks so i would say those films. On different days i would. I would mention one or the other. But they're both just terrific. What's your favorite meal in. La it can be at a restaurant it could be something You and aaron make home. My kids my four kids. They'll laugh laughing. And sodas erin. Because i'll make something and sit down and go if i had this in a restaurant i'd order it again. They think about everything. I make but it's not true but there's a joy in making something and sitting down and eating going. Wow this is great. So i have to say that a couple of nights ago but i made a rigatoni i can give it to you in in As far as the ingredients. But this is not a matter of just slopping it into a pod of adding things into the pan and what have you over time so was mushrooms and olive oil and fresh basil and rosemary and oregano masala wine vegetables stock plob- and chilly some fresh tomatoes butter and a little bit of cream and parmigiano reggiano. It was crazy it was. It sounds amazing. It was so good. And i had to send photos to all my chef friends from food network and that kind of thing just to get their assessment. I enjoy cooking. And that's not to say that i'm a. I'm a chef. Cook big difference. Yeah yennin great chefs from me to sam chef. I tend to say a couple of them. I probably cook as well as you play guitar. What's your favorite place in. La could be part of or a specific location..

"We we were. Oh yeah the thing. We loved from the beginning about those british bands. Even before those the ones i mentioned was if you saw the beatles you knew they were all beatles. You couldn't put one of the rolling stones the beatles. They just look different over here. You had people walking on stage looking like they just rolled out of bed and they depended on light shows all these flashing lights and things behind him frankly because they were born to look at so we were. We were never taken with that. We were much more about presentation and about entertainment. And that's really what it was born out of. so it was that you were individually. Because you're a star child right you. Each had your individual look but that there is cohesion with the face makeup and the the outfits that made you uniquely i. It wasn't it wasn't a matter of wearing the costume. It was about embodying part of who each one of us was It would've come across false. What you liked it or not. He'd came across real. It wasn't halloween. I saw some other bands. Try it and they just they nest the point it it. It didn't make any sense because it was paint on the outside as opposed to taking something from the inside and what about star child took from you from the inside. I think i wanted to exemplify this. Golden era of stardom of Yeah larger than life. Glamorous flamboyant. i've always been totally comfortable in myself in terms of sexuality so wearing red lipstick or anything like that didn't never never cross my mind that if it represented anything more than comfort comfort in yahoo i am and If you can appeal to everyone as opposed to just the opposite sex why not you know. it yeah. It's just that simple so it was To kind of exaggerate flamboyance old time movie stars star was always a stars are cool and You know My look wasn't scary. It was perhaps androgynous. Nobody would ever confuse me or take me for a mine or a ballet dancer. I'm a big guy nolan. The if you don't like the way. Look i could kick your butt. And so who comes to kiss shows in twenty twenty or now twenty twenty one is it still fans from the seventies their kids at there. We're we're we're so blessed. Yeah we are three generations or more into this at this point and While it so much more than a rock audience. It's almost a try. Because most bands are very sensitive to the demographic and who they appeal to somebody in in an audience it a certain rock bands show would feel very uncomfortable that their little brother was there or god. Forbid them dad when not that yeah. We're this huge secret society of people who all believe in the same thing everybody rebels in that camaraderie and it's thumbs up from everybody in the audience and you see people bringing their youngest children so that their children can experience the magic that they felt. You know it's like the lion king you're holding..

"We made each other better in so many ways in sometimes difficult we. It's crazy when people sometimes erroneously simplified to. Oh well jeans. The business guy in paul's the creative guy and it's it's it's far from the truth. Yeah the to really intermingle and have over the years. And i'm more geared towards the aesthetics of things than he is. Yeah yeah but it's not it's really not a yin and yang. I'm speaking of aesthetics. That's a good segue. We're all wearing masks now as part of this pandemic you've worn a mask on your face so to speak for decades as part of kiss. How did it come about that. You guys decided to paint your faces. Gene and i in particular were huge anglophiles and loved british music. Every week i would take the bus in the subway dumped greenwich village to international news. Stand and by melody maker sounds and new musical express which were the three contemporary music papers in england and just read about all these bands many of them never made it here but they had showmanship and flair the some of them obviously made it to these shores but that was our inspiration seeing all these bands. We just wanted to take what was being done over there. The next step over years. I i've come to to think of it in in terms of commonality the fact that if you do something that satisfies you or fulfils a wish or need and you. You will do the same for other people because we're also similar so if we could be the band we never saw we would also be the band. You never saw And if we gave ourselves the kind of show we wished someone else would do all then a. It's only logical that other people would feel saying so yeah How we put on the makeup gene. I would just talking days ago and we can't really pin bowling. Who did it or who started it. We had a a room aloft on ten third street in new york and one day we went downstairs to a five and dime ten cent store some makeup and a couple of mirrors cheap mirrors went back upstairs and started painting our faces so who started no idea it really was. Let's take what's been done a step further. We've we've we always ourselves much more aligned with jimmy. Handwritten the who a lot of these english bands. We never thought are of ourselves as contemporaries of jefferson airplane or or or any of the the west coast hippie kind of bands..

"You know a bowl or it was Painting and picasso was great and that he said. If i had to describe myself and my art i'd say i'm an artist without a style. I think that's great. He went through so many different periods. And maybe that's what life's about going through different periods as time has gone on. I believe that Bucket lists the antithesis of of what we should strive for. Because if you fulfill everything on your bucket list then you're not living because every time you cross something off you should see a new horizon. You should see something new so That's really been my whole. Life has just been following. Inspirations musical. Inspirations art inspirations and i don't want to a never have lived within the boundaries or limitations that other people either have or are threatened in. Want me to live within when you were dealing with that as a kid and feeling different and where they're folks in your life for supporting you through that or Encouraging you or was it you kind of looking out to these either artists or other musicians and going you know if i can use this inspiration to get out of the circumstances i can sort of rise above it really more that Yeah i don't really believe in for the most part tough love. I don't think that the idea of telling somebody who's not like everybody else. You just like everybody else. Well that's shuts them down immediately. Because hey my that. I'm not like everybody else. Okay now what do we do about it. Yeah so that unfortunately wasn't something that i got it home and it made me all the more determined that i'll show everybody you know. They'll wish they had been nicer to me or fame. And success is going to bring me happiness and i was fortunate to find fame and success because at that point rather than being disappointed. I kind of went. Okay well now. I have that. I'm still not happy so it can be an eye opener at that point. Some people put needles in their arms or guns in their mouth. I just rolled up my sleeves and said what's it gonna take. You know what. What is it that that's missing or what. What is going to make me happy. And so let's get sort of your teenage years or early twenties when you're starting to play music and you meet chain simmons through this band. Wicked lester wasn't that the original plan mind you. Gene simmons was. I am bits then became gene klein because his uncle's last name was cli- but gene was high in bits and we met through a mutual friend or a somebody. We will both playing with a Musically although not together he introduced us in..

"Eisen and from a nice jewish boy from new york. I don't know about nice of you. Know what a jewish boy from new york and my mom was. She came here during the war during world. War two they fled the german. My mom was born in berlin and Since then i've gotten records and accounts from historians over there who did research. What they went through was not only mind boggling but would make a film my My grandfather got a call at night. That family was going to be arrested in the morning and they literally packed all the old clothes. Nothing new took their car which was a new car or fairly new car. Drove it to the train station left it. They're separated went into different cars of the train and traveled little by little and made their way to amsterdam and then ultimately fled from there but That's my mom story. My dad was a first generation. Here's parents were from poland and As far as my name. I always hated my name which was really funny and I used to say to my parents when i was little. I don't like my name and they would say. Oh when you get old. Change it if you want why. I don't think that they. I reminded you take it literally. Remind them you said. I think it's very interesting because people say well. What's your real name. And it's an interesting when Somebody was say that. Because your real name is what you choose. Your given name is somebody else's idea. So if the to correlate. I mean if the name that somebody gave you name that you like then as we say mazal tov. I don't think i've ever said that before but now a good time to say but in my case it never felt right. And i've been paul stanley far far far longer than i was ever. Stanley is and of course. "I think that there's no substitute for time and Time builds trust and time also allows you to see what is possible. And what's not possible for somebody so if over time you don't expect something unrealistic. You're not disappointed but In jeans and my case we've been together since we lived at home with our parents Which i to get to. Yeah and we've made amazing lives for each other. And i think we're more thankful now than ever but The bond we both had was see since that hard work is integral to think succeeding and There are no shortcuts and you deserve to be paid. What you're worth for the work you do. And we're hard. Workers were survivors in many senses and time only seen us grow closer. But i've never thought for a minute that we wouldn't be together and the band to me has always been at the core of Certainly my life shares a space with things that ultimately are probably more important or should be more important family and friends. But it's availed me a lot of great opportunities. And i think that if you don't realize how fortunate you are then you don't deserve that good fortune and i think everybody in the band shares that eric. Our drummer has been inhabited. The band primarily in. He's been here twenty five years. At least and tommy's been in the band for about seventeen or eighteen. So yeah there's a real strong work ethic in real strong pride in what we do. We've built something on a foundation of entertaining and giving people their money's worth and Respecting our audience and the band i think resonates and carries at ford now probably more than ever. We have a lot more to live up to Whatever legend there is of us in the is what we carry onto the stage and when people see us they they have a big anticipation With going to see and we're we're proud to live up to that. Yeah and you carry a lot me. Look five hundred people to build build a stage. You have a lot of folks who you bring with you on the road. who who. i'm sure are working very hard and I'm sure that work ethic permeates the entire tour and the entire show. I do think so. I think as hard as people work around us they invariably come back over the years. And i think it probably has to do with. I don't ask any thing of anybody or a quality of work from anybody that they don't see i expect for myself and It's one thing to push other people to work. But i think you lead by example and when people see how much dedication there is by the band and how much it matters to us. Then it matters to them. Well i wanna get to kind of your foundation and So you grew up in new york. I did that right. I did that. And you were not born paul stanley though. I wasn't as what your birth name. "Show for jennifer and karen for you i tell you my my my fan base and knows that i don't like kiss never had gene simmons is an interesting character but the music has never done anything for me other than this this time when you think about it can you name any other song besides because i can't anyway the reason we're playing i wanna rock and roll all night is that the gene simmons has settled a lawsuit alleging sexual battery gender violence assault against a female radio and tv broadcaster simmons and the players identified as jane doe i've seen her involved in lots of cases though she gets around that jane doe anyway they announced today in the la county supreme court their case has been settled da da da terms a settlement not known never will be they'll walk it up and throw away the key so you'll never know originally simmons was sued for allegedly groping this reporter and making quote unwanted unwarranted sexual advances that's certainly imaginable in my mind his personality yes just every bit of whatever i've seen he's married to a fabulously good looking very open woman apparently shannon is her name i always thought she was really quite a catch for him because he's ugly and she's really good looking well they had that what was that show the family jewels neighbor went along their life is actually really interesting and their their kids seem pretty normal the white seemed pretty normal sees beautiful and then he's just crazy data's mine anyway for a really long time and then he finally married her yet they were children came out of wedlock as they say johnny way he did whatever he does there's an interview apparently with his bandmate paul stanley at their rock and brews restaurant in san manuel casino in highland california and this is when that all happened apparently according to lawsuit simmons grabbed the plaintiffs hand and forcefully placed in on his knee held on his name he's been doing that for as long as anybody can remember doesn't make it right but most people thought as part of his act and to a point i think it was so anyway but he may have gone too far in this circumstance the allegations included that he forcibly flicker struck her throat providing an incoherent explanation for his behavior when he was asked so the suit also said that while posing for promotional photograph together after the interview simmons grabbed her butt perfectly imaginable as well it was a dentist the document says a longtime on air personality for local rock station big drinker i don't know i don't think so i do not think or a drinker seems like he kind of has like drunken antics i think he's just a goofball frankly or i think he's very smart businessman i think he's very smart guys made a lot of money merchandising genius he very smart the band is a really marginally talented band yeah the band music and also one of the vets move along here i wanted the other people i think it's in people some will violently disagree with me or vehemently disagree tom petty his next step musically because his a gibson es g electric guitar and it was a may nineteen sixty five jimmy auction along with one of his top hats famous heritage auctions announced that the curve on the twentyfirst of this month a couple of weeks from now says guitar was played by petty during his eighty six tour with bob dylan portion of the proceeds from the sale of the tar will benefit to southern california charities the midnight mission that helps the homeless and the animal rescue fund guitar the top had been sold by petty's friend norm harris runs a rare guitar shop in la heritage says harris solely guitar petty he returned to terrace years later after a friend gave him another rare instrument so tom petty's didn't say how much it's got word what do you think it'll go for a lot there's you know he tom petty is revered so i can't imagine he was also very charitable and lots.
