US and allied naval commanders in Mideast transit Strait of Hormuz, in show of force against Iran
"The midi used to base commanders of three navies have taken part in a show of force against Iran. From the guided missile destroyer USS Paul Hamilton, DDT 60. There's nothing necessarily unusual about vice admiral Brad Cooper, the navy's top midi's commander, being on a warship in the Strait of Hormuz, but this part is incredibly rare. So what is that worth to you? And the free agent market is far and bring it back or Are you just going to clean to clear the slate and, um Excuse me that, uh To a point. And I said this, you know, before Larson and those guys, you know, it just comes to a point where losing is just so ingrained in you, and you just hate walking into that arena that arena Just means bad memories. And just, uh as you walk in the door, not this again. And then you know this year they're not even a month into the season and there are already Not this again. We're already eliminated and in type of thing, and they've gotten rid of a lot of those types of guys. But McCabe would fall in that category that he's done nothing but lose and lose badly. As things are around. So if you're trying to we those types of players and if you're making an icon Ryan our trade, you're getting two more of those guys out of there. And if you decide well, Jake McCabe, you know, maybe we're not going to make him an offer and let him become a free agent. And really you haven't heard anything at all about Jake McCabe that they're trying to resign him or Least you know that they're trying to resign all Mark. But, um You know, so yes, I probably would bring him back. But You know, they may just decide it's time to move on from players like that. If they don't bring him back, I thought Well, I think you would bring him back at the very least. And again. It doesn't. It's not like it's going to be a big contract might only be a one year deal two year deal. I don't know what kind of value McCabe would have on the market because, as you mentioned he's been dealing with injury issues, you can't make it through a full season. But I think his value here it well. It's more of a You got to have some veteran guys on defense, don't you? I mean, if he's gone, you have Darlene. He's not going anywhere. You have Yoki hard. You I don't think he's going anywhere. There is risk to lining. But you know, most Sabre fans are ready to close the chapter on him. Maybe he's traded. Colin Miller is Colin Miller. I mean, sometimes he has a tough time breaking the lineup. Then you're talking Borgen, Bryce and Samuelsson, um, lacks in and Fitzgerald. I mean, that's a really young group of defenseman and I thought McCabe To be around some of those younger D would still have value on a short term contract. I would do, uh, I definitely would look at that, and I just think the injury part and then on the injury part on the other side is how much value does he have on the open market right in a flat cap, right? You know where there's a flat cap and teams are watching you mean is he going to be able to get I mean, you know, he's coming off a contract. That was two years $5.7 million, so he, you know? Yeah, I could see maybe giving him a raise up to three million. You know, maybe two years at six set of two years and 5.7 But you know, I I I I wouldn't get real carried away with it to be quite honest. Goalies Lena, Sol Mark and Carter Hutton. Yes, I would try to bring back all Mark. No, I uh Yeah, I would have no interest in. You know, Carter Hutton is a great guy, but that only takes you so far. The the old Mark thing is interesting to you know, right? I think we're all wondering. Waiting, expecting whatever way you want to phrase it for for U P l And I know when we've When we've talked to Marty about this morning, Baron, uh, he talks about how you know, maybe you pl could be here as the number two guy next season, but he thinks would be a little too soon. To put the number one on the the number one job on him. He was thinking more are two years down the road. So the 22 23 season If that's the case, and again Upl is a projection. It's not a given. If that's the case, all mark as a short term guy, you'd think that would be a way for the Sabres to go again. Can you get all mark on a one year contract or one or a two year deal? What's his value on the open market in a year when there are a lot of U F A goal is out there. Well, I think what killed all Mark's value with what we've already talked about as a flat cap. But Thatcher Demko for signed a five. You know a $5 million deal. He's getting $5 million a year. Well, he's hard. He hasn't played anywhere as near as long as all Marquez and I think I don't even think he's close to being in the goaltender that all Mark is. I don't think all Mark is a $5 million goaltender but of his agent is not asking for that. He should be fired. I mean, I mean, you just say, Look at it if Canucks around and play damn cool. You know, five million a year. You guys got to be willing to pay all mark five million a year and I'm no, I don't know if that's the offer, but I would think it's probably in that area and maybe Kevin and Leah. "That transitioning to because now I'm thinking about video games and sports video games. I'm hoping that, um We bring back good college football video games as well with, uh, with the way that the N C double A's vision of amateurism is starting to crumble, uh, that we start to get more of those classic games that we like. But it's hard to chase nostalgia and video games. You don't really get that back. You don't get the sensation back like if we're trying to get like You know, N c double a to K to come back, and so we can play that and have fun again with all of our friends. It's not really what we do anymore, like we don't play sports to get. We don't play video games together in one space really anymore. That's not what we do. We play them online. We played them through twitch. God. We kind of talked a little bit about this with Sal carpaccio on Wednesday about how we consume sports differently now through YouTube highlights and how kids can just like, get stuff through osmosis. Very quickly and a lot of breath, but not a lot of depth. You know they're not watching the whole game. They're not studying a player and all their movements and everything they do the whole way. They're getting clips of that player. They're getting clips of specific plays. So You're but you're doing that remotely. That's how you're interacting with sports and video games. We are interacting remotely. Obviously we had for the past year and a half. But like When I was growing up and playing video games back in, you know, the two thousands in the late nineties, it was you cared to come together. The Internet wasn't able to support that level of multiplayer yet. So you were going to a friend's house, and they had smash brothers where they had golden eye and you would play slappers only, and that's what you did. And or you had N C double A and you went You played N C double A and you just burned through hole. So you want your friend's house to play Tech Mobile? Something like that, right? Or somebody had a cartridge copy of NBA Jam for Genesis, and you just That's it where we're going. But like that's not what we do anymore. We don't play video games that way anymore. So like when we are hoping for those games to return, like, man, I really hope they bring into your Are we asking for the game specifically or we asking for the vibe? Because if you're asking for the vibe, I think those vibes are gone. I don't think those kinds of communal coming together around doing something fun together like that. We might do other things together. We're obviously going to be social species. We're still going to do that. But I don't know if video games are going to be that I'm playing Wii music as I'm speaking and like that entire system was built around the idea of having four people doing the same game and having fun doing it. It was meant to be a party system. And the Nintendo switch kept a lot of that kind of a thing. It's not very good at online play. It's not very good at online multiplayer because Nintendo still thinks, Oh, everything ever since we put four remote control plugs on the front of the Nintendo 64. Everybody gets together in a physical, split space and plays video games, and that's just what we're going to do. No, no, we don't. We just don't do that. So Where we are just starting to come out of the shell of coming back together and doing stuff. Uh, Bulldog and Paul Hamilton talked about it today. You heard it in the last hour. Now What I saw in terms of evaluation of that game was that the third overtime it was really bad hockey because they also played the night before, writes back to back nights. So, you know in in watching him this year, whether it's the numbers through his own play through his own mood, it seems like everything got better. Ah, lot of the players started to get better results in Darlene is probably at the top of the list up there with middle stat and a couple others in terms of You could see it in their play. You could probably see it in their face in the way the cake. How Hockey team seemed like it was more fun for a lot of players and Darlene at the top of the list. Yeah, if you just go by points. I think some people would be surprised because under Kruger, he had 11 points in 27 games under Granada. We had 12 points in 26 games. Ah, and and I'm sorry 28 games with Kruger 27 with Granado on one with Adams. Esso in points. It was pretty even but I think you need to go further than that. I think you have to look at what was generated. When he was on the ice. He was generating offense. He was pushing offense. He was making teams account for him. Where is under Kruger. They didn't have to account for him because he stayed back or Didn't lead the rush. The That was the thing that really drove me crazy that you know he would bring the puck up ice. And as soon as you got the right on, he was looking to pass every time. I mean, every time And he totally ignored any talent he might have as far as carrying the puck under Granato, Granato. You know, realize that what is Darlene do best. He carries the puck well when it when he's coming up on the rush, so he would lead the attack into the zone. And if he didn't very often, he would join in as 1/4 guy late. And cause problems that way. So you know, it's not just points that you're talking about. It's what can be generated when he's out there and by doing all that I thought he was better defensively. You know he had to go out and Granado used him in situations where he's out against the best other team's best. Forwards, even if it didn't work out real well, he didn't give up on it. It's like, okay. It didn't work. This shift. Go out there. Here. This is why it didn't work now go out there and You know, do it again. You know, and stuck with him and him and Yoki Har U. S. O, You know where they were better defensively and they weren't up tight to go out and play against the Crosby line or somebody like that. And a lot of you know, I think a lot of what you saw with Darlene and he said it is, you know, He felt like he was trusted with Granado and you know he didn't feel that way with Kruger, and then he would be uptight and he would start making mistakes and the mistakes would build and the stakes would build and they'd keep building and they get worse and he'd get worse. And it was just a vicious cycle where It's funny how he talked about, you know, he had fun coming to the arena. You know, all of a sudden he liked coming to the arena wasn't drudgery. Um, he goes Granada Granada coaches the way he was taught to play when he grew up. And that's the thing with Coronado. He uses what you do well. And then brings that to the table instead of trying to force feed something to you that you don't do well and makes you play worse. And I think about Darlene and I mentioned this to Granato in our last conversation with him that when Darlene came here to Buffalo, he said that he liked playing defense. He started his career playing forward and wanted to play defense because Defense, he said. He felt like the game came through him. He got to control it, You know, quarterback the game from the back and That had disappeared from his game. Paul I really controlling and run the game through him, and I feel like that's ultimately where the sabers should want to get with him is is get to a spot where he is controlling a game for, you know, 25 minutes a night or what, it zloty in minutes, but it's about when he's on the ice kind of he's in charge from back there. But there were times he Woz You know, as he was, you know, getting better and and moving the puck and bringing it up ice and then getting it in the offenses own and not being afraid to. Get a cycle going and and not just be a statue back at the at the point. Moving a little bit, you know, making himself available. Sometimes you would see him down in the way left wing corner, you know, and it is, You know, they were rotating and moving and getting in on a four check in I'm trying to be a part of it or him trying to sneak in to make a backdoor play and make himself available that way. What should the identity of the club B has have those guys said anything about what they're trying to establish as the identity of the club? Well, I think it depends on who the coach is going to be. I mean, if it's going to be Granado, it's going to be a high paced, fast offensive type team. That, you know, try to spend a lot of time in the offensive zone and probably is going to give up more shots than maybe Ah, Ralph Krueger would like to have because you know, playing that way. Sometimes you're the other team's gonna Wind up comic transitioning and coming back at you so but everything with pace if it's done, Granado, that's what they'll be looking for. I don't think They're going to be like Lula. Morello is and it's like, well, you're going to coach this style. If you don't coach this style, you're not going to coach the New York Islanders type of thing. But so I think it's all going to depend on the coach. What kind of identity the team is going to have. Do You think it will be Granada? Would you put odds on this if you are ah, a betting man, And you don't make predictions. Paul, We don't ask you to pick games. But if you you know, just your feel for do you think that grotto has the inside track? Yes. I think he has the inside track on it. I think anybody being interviewed now, and they've done some interviews before the season ended. I mean, They're still doing interviews, and there might be some people they want interview. It's still playing right now. You know, in the Stanley Cup as an assistant coach, or or something like that, Um But, yeah, I think definitely Granados, the guy to beat and I think Adam's is pretty much indicated That and Karmanos is pretty much indicated that they want to go through the process. They want to make sure they have the best person for the job, No matter who it is. But you know, they both are very impressed with Don Coronado and it seems like he would have the inside track. Do you think Granted, this would not be something that would be, um You know the reason he gets the job, but it's Kevin Adams says they have toe. Reconnect with their fans. Do you think Toronto's ability to in the short time he was the coach? Connect. People reacted to him. People appreciated him and thought, at least you know the list. Dawson talkto us thought this is someone that I can understand the way he speaks. And you could. You could speak to this as well. And this is how we feel you're playing. This is why Maybe your minutes have been reduced and teach Thompson's case for a couple of games. And this is why And basically, he said, This is the way it's gonna be. You know the You know you're gonna practice hard. If you don't you could play. You're gonna play hard and you know you're those types of things, so I think he had a firm hand with them, and it's kind of the way he came off in interviews, too, you know is It was for your firm. I It seemed like it was honest when he talked, and that's all you can ask for, you know, And if he didn't want to tell you something he would just say so. I'm I'm not gonna talk about that. Home, You know, to your point about Granado and the pace when it comes to these guys deciding who the coaches to their point about culture and identity. What do you think in your opinion? Would be the most important criteria to consider. Is it philosophical the paint? You know how you play the game? More up tempo, more attacking North South. Okay, you're going to give up shots, but you're going to get shot. You're going to get generate chances, or is it more? I wanted a next Erian's guy who's been on He's been head coach in the league before plenty of times. He's coached in playoff games before he's got a winning record stuff like that. I think of all that stuff will go into the decision. You know what kind of what? Of What is your career Been like? What is your coaching career Been like? Um, even look into people who have been on teams that this person has coached on. And get some input that way. Uh, You know, just because Adam's talked about he's talking to a lot of people more than just the candidates. I think he's talking to a lot of people about the candidates. You know, what have you seen from this coach? In what he's done, You might talk to some scouts who is one who have watched teams that this particular coaches coached. And talk about how organized are they? You know what kind of what kind of system are they? How did they react in certain situations When things are going well, how did they react when things aren't going well? Um, can they adjust to what's going on during the game? It's you know that the adjustments probably aren't as many as you would have in a football game. But they're still adjustments that you have to be ready for. Teams can all of a sudden have a different for checking system on you. Then they what they have done before and then you've got to adjust to what things are so those of the conversations that are going on and it's not necessarily just with the coaching candidate. Well, Do you have a preference? Whether you whether there's ah specific guy out there that you think would be good or whether it's the older veteran coach was to say a Granato, who might be more better suited, I should say to coach young team, Maybe it's AH, successful collegiate coach like the guy Providence, Nate Lehman, do you have a particular preference for is what they should do. No. No right like no, No. You know, I think Adam's you know, did did. Okay. I don't think I would say more than that. Like I don't think he hit a home run. Which was important, like you know, I think he defended their position on The revolutionary surgery idea that Eichel seems to want effectively and defended their medical staff or the doctors. Um, without like, I think, really putting on brass knuckles and punching Jack in the face at all. Like I think he managed to definitely do that. But I still think there's a huge problem and I still buy. I think he's absolutely gone. Aziz Reinhardt, Um you know, at least if if they can't get a long term deal done with Ryan Hardy souls, a different situation. They have his rights, But I think if he won't sign a long term deal, they're gonna have to trade him. On ice. You know, I felt that way after Monday when Reinhardt and Michael both made their feelings public, and we talked a lot about yesterday, and I'm still in the same place. Um, you know, I think it's it's really convenient. And it's also correct. Um, you know to say that you know you're excited about the young guys. They want to be here and all that sort of stuff. They also have no real power in this In this scenario, guys that do seem like they want to get the hell out of here. And you know that that maybe because they're jerks or that maybe because they think the sabers are a clown show you can choose, you know, Um it's probably somewhere you know, I think the sabers definitely deserves some criticism. Clown troll might be strong. Um, but, you know, no, nothing changed to me like he and I didn't really expect anything to change. I guess there was always some chance he was gonna really come out firing. Um at Eichel, but I didn't think that was in his best interest of the organization's best interest or never seemed likely to me, But I mean, it could have happened, But I wasn't expecting. I guess a lot to change. Um, he also could have made it worse. And I don't think he did that. And that's why I mean like he did. He did Okay. Like he stayed out of me like escalating the situation with Michael. I think it's you know, but I don't know where you really escalate to if You think he's going to get traded like that? Seems like pretty much the buttons already been pushed. You really don't for the sake of a trade A potentially, and I think for your own roster and the fans, the fans would probably get a rush out of it. But is it overall a good idea? To talk like you're sort of accelerating toward a trade today, and he didn't. I thought I think this said it every time we've heard him, I I think he has a really good You know? Way about these like he's sharp. I think Adam's You have to be to talk, especially when it's challenging, like today would be no, I think maybe you yesterday said every time he's talked, it's been challenging for one reason or another. Like, yeah, I mean, that's right. But I thought today was a hard one. And Paul Hamilton just Hosted and then tweeted his article, which is very much a transcript of Adam's on Unicycle at first. That's how we started today and then on what they're going to do it. I guess it was Paul, who asked him as Paul wrote. About players who have been on saber teams that have lost for many years. Like I think there'd be a sense that a field a sentiment that You really just need to get rid of those guys. It was said about Larson a lot, you know, just all they've been around for so long on Adam's on that he was almost perfect on that. And it is short. He's basically like, I don't care about that. Really. I mean, I'm not sure he would put it in those words. But really, that's what comes across is not about Whether they have been around for a lot of losing its about whether their best for us now and then he added to that, which was really good. He added to that I have to understand, though, and it respect What has happened. And That's the point about Larson in the past, and these guys now is like When do you just say who can? I've said it. I have those times when, like, just like, who cares anymore? Just change him out. Whatever. And he sort of he recognizes that and then eventually says this is this is a great job, I think. If I may. I understand the fan base the frustration and it's real. It happened, But we can't wake up and dwell on that. And we can't look at players and say this player can stay in. This player can't stay because of how long they've been here. It's more about Are you a part of the solution? And do you want to be here? And do you want to be part of something Great. "Looking at making excuses. Kevin Adams went out and signed a monster. He went out and signed Taylor Hall and brought him to this team. Where I mean, it's I. There's just too many excuses. Or for you know a player like Taylor Hall to sit there and say, Well, now he's on Boston having success, but on in Buffalo killer who was playing with Top end players. He's pretty much alone when he was a lone wolf in Jersey. Hey, played most of the time with Jack Eichel. I mean, it wasn't like he was playing with Cody Eakin, or he was playing most of the time with Jack Eichel. And still couldn't produce And just like I remember every week would bother me so much to watch him go in on a four check and get it on the wrong side of the defenseman. It's like you've been in this league long enough. What do you What do you doing to give that defenseman and easy laying out Because you're you come in on the wrong side of him, and then I watched him now, and it's like well. You know he's back checking now, you know, getting complimented for how great he is on the back, Jack and you know he's playing a 200 ft game. And this that the other thing and It's like, why was that never part of your game here in Buffalo, and it's not like Yeah, You didn't lose the first two games to the Washington capitals, but Quite honestly, I was never all that enthralled with what I saw with him in most games here in Buffalo, and then he shows up in Boston and is a totally different player. Don't a lot of people that either a lot of people are screaming. It was Ralph Gruber's fault. And well, yeah. Ralph Krueger didn't have a system that fit the buffalo sabers. But I would still expect Taylor Hall when he had chances to score to be able to convert those chances to score. I mean, Ralph Krueger wasn't there standing there with wide open nets and missing them and shoot them out of the other side of the crease and put the puck over the top of the net. His coach here is coach Granado, your coach going forward. If we had to make a decision today, if I was the sabers and had to make a decision today, yes, Coach Granada would be my higher today. I still would like to see it play out for the to the end of the week and I still would like to see Kevin Adams interview people which I think he's been doing, you know and see what's out there and seeing you know what? What are the coaches have to say? And those types of things but I think Don Coronado definitely has earned an opportunity with what he's been able to accomplish with this team and how he's been able to feed confidence into these youngsters. And and get the most out of, you know, knowing how to play with certain players and what to do with certain players. I think you know, definitely. And now I've talked so long. I forgot what the other question was. Compactor. Luca? No. How's he? Bannon? How's he been? And how long until he is your and you weren't talking that long shows you how good my brain is. Um, yeah, it's Ah, I liked I. Yeah, he gave up four goals in that first game. But the first goal I mean, what you gonna do? You let a guy come right down the alley and it's in the net. I'm not gonna blame him on that one, and I was impressed with his mental toughness. First one in two minutes and 15 seconds into the game goes in the net. Now you've got to stand there almost eight more minutes before you get your first NHL save. You don't see another shot till Taylor Hall comes down the left wing eight minutes later, and that's your first save, So he keeps his head in the game with that. Made a real nice save on the power play late in the period only had to face five shots. But then you get to when it's 51. He's cruising along and Yeah, The 52 goal was a bit of a rebound, but overall, I didn't think he was popping rebounds all over the place. And, um, you know, I think with rookie goaltender sometimes that's a big problem, especially in your first game. You got a lot of big rebounds, and I didn't see this guy here next year. Paul is this guy here next year? He's played two games. And he's gonna probably play what? Four out of the next six. Maybe. In that sample size. Is that enough for this young man? If he plays well to be here full time with sabers. I think you have to have plan B. I don't think you can go into the summer. No matter how this goes in the last six games. Don't think you could go into this summer thinking. Okay. You know he's played six NHL games were ready to annoy him. Even if we lose lead us all. Mark. We're ready to annoy him and put him in the crease. I mean, E think he's shown a lot. But, you know, I would still be leery of that. I still think you need to have a plan B. My eyes still think they need to look for goaltending. But I think what we are is he away. No more than a year. Maybe not even a full season if you if you have a regular hockey season next year. And he gets a full half season and showing that he's doing well or you have some injuries. I think at least you know now you have a guy that you have what you thought you had. You have a guy as a real opportunity to be a real big, ultimate NHL prospect Goaltender? Absolutely. Yeah. You got a good goalie, Prospero. It looks like it looks like we have a number one. And for the future, right? I think so. And I think they felt that way all along, but I think this helps confirm it. Okay, So what do you do with Lena Sol mark them. I still would try to sign him, but unfortunately for the sabers, Lena's Hallmark holds all the cards. So in order to re sign him, you may have to overpaid him or over extend the years in the contract since he can just say all right, maybe I'll just go to free agency and maybe I'll get back to you. Maybe I won't I've heard all that before. Well, I'll get back to you with the offer and see what you like. And that's the last you ever hear from the guy as he signs with another team, so Yeah, it's gonna be very difficulty. I think there's re signed him to a contract. Because they'll look at it. We'll We'll go see what it's about. We can always circle back to Buffalo. All Buffalo could also have gone out and got their own goaltending. By then it may be circling back to Buffalo. Ask who now that worked out. He wanted over $2 billion and he was they were thinking they could circle back to Buffalo. Buffalo was willing to give him about half of that. A million and a half or so.
