"But also, it would be nice if they could just pony up for another hitter every now and then. You know, just like, of course anything can happen and it's two games and this is almost unfair to look at this small sample and say, oh, the rays didn't hit in these two games. I mean, neither did the guardians, but with either of these teams because offense was not their strong suit and they had holes in the lineup, like it's just the foundation is so good. They've developed such great players. I mean, the rays with their ridiculous farm system in recent years and the guardians with just such a young team winning that division title and so many homegrown guys and guys they've gotten through trades and have done well there too. Like if they could just either of them supplement, you know, just like spend a little more of like they would go from being the winner of a weak division that is fun and exciting but still has some flaws or a wild card team that you know is kind of there every year, but generally not a powerhouse, not this year at least. If they just did everything else they did and also added to the payroll and were able to bring in some free agents here or there or make some big trade at the deadline like you never know that could make the difference in a series like this. So again, it's like you compliment how they put these teams together year after year. It's really pretty impressive, but also you kind of wish that they could combine that like maybe if they were more free spending like, I don't know, they just wouldn't be as cutting edge in the front office stuff and maybe they would get complacent and they wouldn't be able to beat other teams to talent and the other ways that they beat them. That's possible too. But if they could keep doing what they're doing and then also just like you know shore up a few holes over the winter at the deadline by taking on some money and some talent, then maybe they would be in a bitter spot come October. So it's hard to quibble with the track records because there have been teams that have spent a lot more that have not had the histories of success that certainly the rays and also the guardians have, but still it's hard to get there and get there every year and then feel like if we just had this or we just had that and it would be bats for both of these teams. Yeah, I mean, I feel nervous I feel nervous for them as they advance these guardians. I feel quite nervous. But I mean, what do you do? You got to go with the guys you get, you know, and hope that the boppers, the various boppers on the Yankees are not able to bop. Yeah, and plenty of them did not pop for long stretches this season. So I'd feel pretty nervous as a Yankees fed too, but we could get to that next time, I guess. All right, so those are the AL series. Then we had Philly's cardinals. The other sweep, three sweeps here, two game suite pickets, we specified at one point that when it's a two game sweep you have to specify that it's a two game sweep. I think, because you have to win two, Ben. Just want to emphasize that. So this, again, I know that there were controversial managerial moves and everything, but ultimately it kind of came down to what we were saying last time, which is that the cardinals did not have the top two starters that scared you so much and the Phillies did, like the Cardinals, maybe a better all around team, but in this format, in this series, when you can line up Zach Wheeler and Aaron nola, and then they can both pitch the way that they are expected to, which they did. Yeah. It's hard you're already finding yourself in a hole there. I mean, yeah, we could point to specific lined up decisions and bullpen decisions and such and maybe we can mention those. But when you come into a series and it is a best of three, as we have mentioned a few times and you're throwing two of the best starters in the national league at the other team, now yeah, like the middle of the cardinal's order, just kind of didn't show up specifically Paul Goldschmidt. Yeah. Looked a little lost. Yeah, he did. Again, it's two games and the guy had a great year. And I know he tailed off a little down the stretch. But either here or not, probably going to be the NLM BP this year. And you combined their lines for the series, and it's not pretty. It's because it's a two game series, and they were facing exactly where they are. So I don't want to make too much of it, but that's what happens when one team throws its aces and they pitch like aces and then the other team, whether because those aces were pitching like aces or just because those batters were a bit distant populated that day. They didn't perform and then you have a two game sweep. So it's kind of about to. We could go a little deeper in the analysis, I suppose, but that's the top level and probably the most important in my mind. It's funny because that first game, I love how you are underselling the madness of that first game. That's true. Overshadowed by the Mariners come back. It's like there is a great Phillies come back too. Yeah, like they, they wild it out first. We shouldn't forget that. But before the disaster inning that doomed the cardinals to lose game one, you could construct an alternate narrative where it's like, yeah, you know, you can't do anything against these great starters and your big bats that you've relied on the whole year kind of go cold. But then you have one, right? You have the hero to hit a two run shot and it's going to be great and you're going to ride off into the sunset and then you're going to actually forget how to play defense for parts of an inning that was weird. Yeah. And you're going to issue some walks and you're going to have your best reliever just have one of the worst days at work he's ever had and the Phillies are going to manage to capitalize on that in large part because in this particular instance fielding was not a thing that they had to do. And so you had this weird literal freaky Friday where the Cardinals were a team that was built around defense in particular their infield defense, right? Where those guys have just been nails, all season long, and not all of what happened in that inning was defensive failing, but some of it was. And that's the thing that we associate with the other team in red.

Where where all that you need is if you even had kind of their their best year or or five to ten percent below that you're not even asking for all star type performances. Because you're probably gonna get that from our auto paul goldschmidt but if everybody in your lineup is is having a down year. That's where you want to stretch where you basically average about two runs a game and you lose series to the tigers to the pirates and to the the colorado rockies. I don't know i. I just i'm not high on jeff albert at all and it's for a couple reasons. One of them is before we even talk about the performance of the team. The last years he was brought over in part. Let's be real. Because he was part of this houston astros brain. Trust right and we've learned a lot about that since then. We've learned a lot about the banging on the trash can so whatever kind of Star he had on him because oh he's from houston look at what they're doing. All their numbers are great. How are they doing this. Well we've learned what and then okay. I'll even give him a pass on that. Because he wasn't he wasn't the architect of that and he's the assistant hitting coach coming in on the final year of all that were allegedly. It wasn't even going on. Which i don't believe but then we look at the last three years and i went through this on the radio the other day. This was about a week ago. So i'm sure. The numbers are similar. But if you look at nineteen twenty twenty one. They are bottom third in the national league in almost every important category. But also the guys that you know. You're you're pushing all in on those guys either are stagnant or even start to regress at one point. We've been waiting all this time. Maybe one of the key reasons you've been selected to join me in studio today Been selected hand selected. He's been drafted. So why don't we do this? Tony, I'm going to give you the floor to kind of explain yourself because we've had a lot of controversy now, Tony, you're anti Crawford stand. There is no controversy. Really? And I'm not anti Crawford. It started off when when you need like Giants music or anything, Do you need something in the background? You feel comfortable? I am perfectly fine and comfortable, as is we will go back to August 20th last season. Crawford. It is 1/100 home run, and, uh, Murph was very, very, very excited about it, and I texted him at the moment and said, All right, all right. Easy. Like, you know, it's it's a decent milestone. But, you know, averaging 10 home runs a year is average. Or how long have you How long have you dislike Brandon Crawford? See, here we go. And then it gets turned into that. And I've said that he is in. You Don't talk this way about any other guys like you've singled him out. No. And you're a baseball guy. Just eight. Brandon Crawford. Oh, That's me, saying, people say I hate Brandon Crawford. And I don't have a context. John Farrell. Exactly. You can state your case. I feel scorned. I feel scorn Shannon. Yeah, but I know seriously. I have always enjoyed Brandon Crawford. I think he's the best defensive shortstop they've ever had. And I think that he is one of the best giants they've ever in the history of the franchise, but he's having a power surge this year. But he doesn't stop you right there. Why do you keep saying power served Because he's having he's 17 home runs and has 51 R B I's this year, but will surge implies that it will retreat at some point like surgeon what he does. I hope it doesn't. But he averages 11 home runs a year and he has 17 already this year, hence the term power surge. Now he is a 2 50 career hitter That is average to below average, and that's all I've said about Crawford's, uh, from day one. You know what? You better balance that out with polar bears on icebergs. If we will get there, we're gonna get to that. Don't worry, I promise you. I wouldn't let this show in without more polar bears probably promised if I were murder if I'd be sitting here going, what What? I'm Michael know that Murphy Murphy. I would say that Murph represents all of the regular giant fans that love this. I love him. Oh, come on, now gets misconstrued. This is a bunch of as Arnold would say. That's a bunch of horses. I love him, too, You know, just saying that I'm recognizing he's having a power surge in. I'm enjoying it just like everybody else of wash business. Uh, yeah, He's got extra gusto when it comes from Arnold. Okay, I want to know so He's rolling into the All Star. He'll probably be an All star Sunday they will finish out and finished finalizing the release. Let's be honest, he deserves to be. He does. Yes, he does, even though he isn't hitting 2 50, which he has 17 home runs and 51. I realize that is all star worthy north of 2 50 by the end of tonight, though, that is, yeah, I don't fluctuate. It's still 2 50 is average to below average. That's all I'm saying, and that's all I said from the get Go. I've always have Crawford. I think again we talked role models for Archie. Children out their Children out there. Brandon Crawford is one of them. He conducts himself in a very professional manner. He doesn't get all wrapped up in any of the off field. Nonsense. These reasons are all these are positive. These are all the reasons we love this guy. No spider attack, You gotta say too seriously. He's become kind of our buddy on the air. Like over the years we've gotten kind of a little bit more and more connected with him. He's a good dude. He's a great He's recovering. Yes. Great family in the East end Liver mall, you're campaigning. I'm not campaigning much. In the street. No, I'm just being factual and real. So would you mean to go ahead? Shannon, I'm getting frustrated. I understand it. It's a frustrating topic with him in the.

"Sc was just mvp of the world series. East twenty six years. Old if you're gonna assign anyone to a term it's more justifiable to sign him than it is to sign. Mookie betts then to sign cody bellinger now. Did he have tommy john surgery. Yeah that was three years ago and that he come right back yeah would what he be wrong at his age for asking for what machado got ten years. Three hundred million or what. Mookie betts got twelve years three hundred and sixty five million. It's just hard to believe that they're gonna let him walk because they have lucks but you could happen and getting back to lend door with the mets i mean. There's there's literally zero chance. The mets traded for lender without the possibility of getting him inked up long-term that that is not something like that. I hope he signs no no no. He has decide and lindores recently when he was asked about. He said i've never been at against the an extension. I 'cause i'd never been against signing long term. So i mean he he could get a mookie betts type of deal a really good. If you think about a guy who needs an extension right now it would be him but it's not just young guys. You can look around and see like like guys like you know. Do you want to lock up a cabin. Oh in toronto. You wanna lock up a louise castio in cincinnati. I think the mariners would be very smart if they could get j. P crawford locked up as Their shortstop for the next five six years spirit thought for a guy who's been on the show had cold. It got really sick out better. Elsa loves cats. So i like that. But the mvp the national league freddie freeman. Did he do hit three forty one with thirteen home runs. He signed extension in february of two thousand fourteen for eight years. One hundred thirty five million and now. He's in that last year. Not many players get to sign to nine figure deals. It's hard to imagine the braves on in their blessed hitter. And their franchise icon. The made a resurgence chipper jones left. It's freddie freeman team. Even with great players like opinion others. But alex anthopoulos run things now and Freeman said. I think alex and everyone knows and the fans know. This is where i'd love to stay. It's his my home. This is all i've ever known. I know i only have one year left on my contract. We'll see how it goes that this team is built the win for a long time and i know that it's going to be a good ride. Hopefully that can be a part of it. Well how old is he. Ricky may ask. He's thirty one does not young by baseball standards but he's so immensely productive that it shouldn't cut into. I mean look at dj. Lemay dj lemay. He was a year older than him. It was the american league. Mvp the batting champ dj lemay. He just got ninety million for six years. So historically players with one year away from from free agency at that age don't usually get paid like that but if you think about the cardinals give them paul goldschmidt that five-year extension for one hundred and thirty million. What would freeman get to me. What i would do freeman if i was atlanta. I would just give him a even nice. Cool one hundred million dollar for your deal. Let them twenty five per and just add that in you get him until he's thirty six and then everybody's at right. I got it all figured out. All right i'm rick to the we'll take a quick break are still time to get in if you like at one..

I'm so glad that you were available to talk about this. I want to know. First of all, because I felt like over the last two off seasons The Cardinals have been chasing Nolan, a Renato and my my writing That assumption? Yes, well, Okay, Well, I don't know if they've been chasing him or if everybody has just been hoping they would go get him. But the two entities have been linked at least the last couple of years, maybe three. Go back three years. Everybody's always talking about Nolan era nado. What a perfect fit. He would be. They don't have a third baseman their infield prior toe acquiring Goldschmidt. Their infield production just wasn't there, so they got to do something. This guy's a perfect fit. He doesn't want to be in Colorado anymore. Um Yeah, Why not bring him He plays good defense because they had carpenter Matt Carpenter playing third and he struggles over. I mean, he's fine at 30 is just not. He's not great, and you can tell when he Makes the throw to first like there's this ark in the throw, and sometimes it just beats the runners. So now you got a guy who plays that position better than maybe anybody in the game with the exception of Matt Chapman. And now he's he fits perfectly into what they need. So I think the question that I've already been asked before you and I'm assuming you were gonna ask me. This is m I surprised they did it in the answer is yes, I'm I Two names have been linked. For a long time as I mentioned, but the Cardinals tend to The exception of the Goldsman acquisition. They made that happen, but they tend to fall short of it. You'll be a David price. They fell short on him, bringing him in or are you know, signing him? They fell short on bringing back Jason Heyward. They fell short on Giancarlo Stanton, even though they allegedly had a deal in place. To acquire him. He said. You know what? Miami? Um I'm not gonna let you have what you want. So I'm not gonna take that deal, so they fell short on him as well. So it just kind of felt like This Aaron auto situation was never going to materialize. So quite frankly, I'm a little surprised. They made it happen, but they did it and they should be commended for it. They should and you start looking at like O P s at their base. Over over the last decade or so. You could see why they would want an upgrade in that spot. It feels like with the Cardinals that they've been waiting a little bit for Rainmaker and Goldschmidt. I think fits that. Now, when you add the two of those guys, now that you've got your quarters together, this this Cardinals team looks really dangerous to me on a day in day out basis. Well, okay. I know the The concern is going to be and I don't think people should be worried about it. If you're a Cardinals fan, I really don't think you should worry about the ballpark factors too much. Because yes, he played in Colorado. The numbers could be inflated inflated in Colorado, but the Cardinals have had pretty good luck with guys who have played for the Rockies. And have come over to where they are and have done pretty well there to Larry Walker being one of them Matt Holliday another so there is precedent for them, acquiring players who have done well at Coors Field. Then also come to Busch Stadium, which which plays a. It's about 15th or 16th and baseball. In terms of of, you know, home runs and offense, so it doesn't play big. It doesn't play small. It's right there in the middle. Don't see any reason he can't be productive there. Maybe there's a little bit of a drop off in his production, but I still think he's going to be a pretty darn good, productive player for a while. So you've got him you got Paul Goldschmidt. Who is in his thirties, now well into his thirties and his 2019 full season first season for them was not great. At least it wasn't close to Goldschmidt standards, but it was pretty good. There was a little bit of a rebound last year. But again, that was only two months of the season. So I guess you could kind of keep an eye out for what kind of production they'll get from him. I would imagine it's still gonna be really good. It's still Paul Goldschmidt. He may not give you like a 9 50 or better O P s, but he should be productive. It feels like with the Cardinals that they've been waiting a little bit for Rainmaker and Goldschmidt, I think fits that Now, when you add the two of those guys, now that you've got your quarters together, this this Cardinals team looks really dangerous to me on a day in day out basis. Well, okay, for I know the The concern is going to be and I don't think people should be worried about it. If you're a Cardinals fan, I really don't think you should worry about the ballpark factors too much. Because yes, he played in Colorado. The numbers could be inflated inflated in Colorado, but the Cardinals have had pretty good luck with guys who have played for the Rockies. And have come over to where they are and have done pretty well there to Larry Walker being one of them, Matt Holliday another so there is precedent for them, acquiring players who have done well at Coors Field, but then also come to Busch Stadium, which which plays a. It's about 15th, or 16th and baseball in terms of Of, you know, home runs an offense so it doesn't play big. It doesn't play small. It's right there in the middle. I don't see any reason he can't be productive there. Maybe there's a little bit of a drop off in his production, but I still think he's going to be a pretty darn good, productive player for a while. So you've got him. You've got Paul Goldschmidt. So you've got two guys in the middle of the order. That should drive in a ton of runs for you. If you're the Cardinals, the question is..

"They went out to sign the whole story yesterday. Okay. Stuart is most famously known because there's picked 22 Times. Two picks after Chris Bryant in the 2013 number four overall high draft pick. Did I talkto One Scout yesterday, said this the problem with drafting high school pictures that the journey to get to the majors can could be winding and they may never get there in the way you want, so he was a high school pitcher back in 13 drafted Didn't work out with the twins. So the Cubs picked him up. That's not a big name, right? That's a project. They're probably just trying to war drum roll pre, please. They are interested in former Cy Young winner World Series champion two time no hitter. Guy Jake area. There is interest with Jake period and the Cubs area is throwing today for teams, so I don't want to say it's imminent that he's signing because of the throwing goes bad. You know that That's not gonna look good or some other if it goes really well and a contender wants to give a lot of money, So I'm not saying it's a done deal, but there is big time interest area and the Cubs. Probably start another guy chasing understand Trevor Williams. You know, it's just Barlow throw done. Yeah. Rodin's in the mix. No, he's there talking to him. Yeah. I heard Casey understand Trevor Williams most recently. But look their bodies right now. Right there. Just even area is kind of just a body coming back Now. I've actually texted with area in the last two weeks. And you know, he was a little coy about Ah lot of things. But one thing, he said, is I am healthy and I'm ready to rock and roll so If you're in the nostalgia, there could be a reunion, which a cure yet again. How much is he going to get if Lester was willing to take anything, So it is weird? Why they just said no to Lester, Despite his desire to play for basically anything in 21 now, maybe they said, no, We don't want to give you four million and 23. You know, maybe they didn't like the deferred money aspect of it. I don't know. But those are questions for Jet boy. Jesse. Any truth to them? The rumor that the Cubs are working Sean Dunstan out today. I mean, really. Came on, man. And here's here than go back to a Lester. I mean, the cardinals brought back Adam Wainwright, a one year deal member. I was talking about CC Sabathia. Ah, one year deal for Adam Wainwright. 39 years old, right here is probably gonna be in the force. What they He's a He's a cardinal. He's a cardinal, and they waited all off season. He waited all offseason. Why I was told a while ago, there was there was a wink and a nod that both Molina and Wainwright would return. But the Cardinals had to figure out their budget. Why wasn't there that weekend and nods to Jon Lester? On Bill figure things that will bring you back. He said on the air yesterday, he couldn't wait any longer for the Cubs. So a lot of strange things there a lot of strange things with these names that they're interested in. And yeah, I would be shocked if I don't know Mickey Morgan. He was on the list. Just okay. I'm just OK clarify for Cub fans. What are the Cubs doing? Like? We've talked already here in the hot stove that the Cubs as is with the moves that they make it still in the division, which is so strange, right? A team that can hit you get rid of some of the assets. So one of the Cubs doing Are they trying to win the division? Are they trying to compete or not? I thought this is a kind of a retooling. The day they traded Yu Darvish was the day they stopped competing in 21. That's that's the bottom line. But if you want a division with this, Jesse, that division sucks, But you could win, right? Yes. What starts about the Cardinals? Hold on a second done. They lost Kolten Wong. What have they done? They brought back Adam Wainwright, Who's 109 years old. He's okay. What have the Cardinals done to this two today? Nothing. They haven't subtracted alive. That's what you know, took a Gold glove second basement off their rosters didn't want to pay him right now. We'll see if they bring him back. He's still out there. Molina is gonna come back Ken Rosenthal reported last night during talks with the Rockies. Nolan Aron Adam, who had a had a really bad year. Okay. You don't want to don't know on there. You don't think they'll rebound? You don't think Paul Goldschmidt rebounded pretty well when he got traded to ST Louis, by the way, Jeff Passan just tweeted Peterson's deal. Seven million for the Cubs. Wait a minute. Where did you get the body? What everybody coming from. That's maybe a million or two more. The order would have gotten through through arbitration.

Bryce Harper sweepstakes could heat up at winter meetings
"Remember the days, right? It's out of Thursday morning. Friday morning is the rule five draft and that ends the proceedings there at the winter meetings. But when you get it. The winter as he got everybody in one place Arab Vegas, and they're going to be all packed into one hotel. And you know, every you have front offices up in a sweet, and they meet every day, basically live up there. You got the reporters walking the hallways. Really unique kind of set up something like MLB network will have their whole studio set up in the middle. Guess wouldn't be in the middle of the game floor there. But in one of the wings of the casinos. So it'll be. Rumer central and that job is everybody talks every little thing becomes a big rumor in typically, we talked about Jayson stark a little bit earlier tonight. You don't always have a whole lot of action at the winter meetings, especially early on and sometimes it will build up. But a lot of big moves already here as Paul Goldschmidt is traded for by the cardinals the Mets with their big move. In fact, they every single one of the teams in the NFL as except the Marlins is already had a big strike so far this off season. But where I am curious now is what happens with Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. The Yankees did not get Patrick Corbin. We have all this money to spend. I gotta take the Yankees are going to end up with one of those two and the Phillies you'd figure it'd be the landing spot for the other the national spend a lot of money on Corbin out. They get puts them out on Bryce Harper. But we just haven't seen them tied to. That many teams every fan base. I guess want Machado one Harper, but the actual teams and the rumor mill really has it started on them yet. And it's been the rest of the free agent market. It's been you know, kinda pick that to to this point Soviets Tennessee starting up on Sunday as to what the Mets still need to accomplish. Even after the deal this week had a chance to catch up.
