Tennessee Issues Statement on Termination of Nine Employees and Jeremy Pruitt
"Tarrant tennessee. No parting of the ways. No resignation fired. Jeremy pruitt after an internal investigation the chancellor of the university chancellor plowman earlier today the personnel actions. We are announcing. Today are an indication of the gravity of what we've discovered today. Athletic director fomer and i issued termination letters to the following assistant. Football coaches brian. Nita meyer and shelton felt also four members of our on campus football recruiting staff additionally our director and assistant director of football player personnel and finally a football analyst quality control coach. So what are what are Council has told us is it. We're looking at level one and level two violations. I don't know yet yet. Exactly how many or exactly the specifics of it the chancellor earlier today and we have the live coverage here blake top. Mayer has covered the story from the beginning and he joins us early evening from knoxville blake. Good evening thanks for being with us and before we get to specific just describe. What this day has been like in knoxville. Well obviously the big news that we've been waiting for call for a probably at least a month now and in the the question for at least the lack last week or more has been. Is jeremy Going to get outright fired for cause or is he going to get fired with a settlement for reduced by out. I mean i. It felt like inevitable that a coaching change was coming. And we've got the answer today. That pruitt's being fired for cause. Tennessee does not intend to pay him. One cent of his twelve point six million dollar buyout also included in the four. 'cause firings Were systems. Brian eater myron shelton felton in the termination letter to jeremy pruitt tennessee chancellor plowman outlined six four. 'cause provision of jeremy pruitt's contract University believe he violated and of course all stems to be ongoing investigation into sweeping recruiting if violations That have occurred or are believed to have occurred within tennessee's program during pruitt's watch like so many things unpack the chancellor said. She threw her own program under the bus. And i understand the tendency to pile on but having covered many of these before as you have. That was really unprecedented address. That if you don't mind it's obvious that the chancellor is frustrated beyond frustrated with the the amount of malfeasance that i think she sees within the football program. I mean these. I think it's fair to call these sweeping violations. And what she believes they're going to be major violations. stemming from the football program She she mentioned that she was stunned. By both the number of interactions and the number of people involved in the infractions. And so you know. It doesn't leave tennessee in a great position to come out on the other side of this and say you know hey. Nca take it on us there. There really wasn't that much bad going on here. You know you've seen a lot of athletic departments kind. Play that card with the ncaa play hardball with the ncaa and say that they weren't breaking rules. I think tennessee is is quite clearly taking me approach of Of admitting its its mistakes. upfront here Firing the people that believes are responsible for the mistakes and then going forward is going to have to pivot and try to likely self imposed penalties and hope that that can fend off Some of the harshest punishment from from the ncaa but it does leave it in a difficult scenario here as it goes forward not only with the ncaa but as it tries to hire and athletic director and it tries to attract a football coach.
Vols firing Pruitt with cause after investigation
"Butch jones suddenly looking better. Jeremy pruitt gone today. John joining us. These senior sports editor at aol dot com and john. It is great to have you with us. We've talked about the possibility that pruitt would be gone. He is now gone. Fulmer out as well. Your reaction another stunning day on rocky. Top back on again paul. You know. I think that the part that i guess is maybe the most surprising to me is the phil fulmer component Because as you know we talked about the past you know there's obviously been you know. Rumors swirling about tennessee. Possibly moving on from jeremy pruitt for a while. I think a lot of people in the industry thought when that first report came out that tennessee was looking into Potential recruiting violations under pruitt that was signaling that they would like to fire pruitt with 'cause a four forecast which you know they've made very clear that is what they are doing. The former component is a little different because he is such legendary person with that blake department From his time as a football coach and you saw today in that press conference just the these university leaders really going out of their way to praise him and talk about how he's at tennessee. Ledge all those different things. So i think you know fomer kind of getting pushed aside Calling it a retirement. But i think there's a little more to that is probably the most interesting component of this to me because now it means you not only have to fire new. Find a new football coach but you also have to find a new ad. Do you think john. It was the contract extension. That former gave jeremy pruitt attorney was the final tipping point for him. I would imagine it's probably a lot of different you components to it because you know hey we have to remember this. Was you know fomer higher to begin with you know as that whole crazy. Coaching search point out and former becomes. Ad then hires jeremy pruitt. I also think. I mean if you were watching that press conference today paul. You know felt like you know so. It's still in some ways defending pruitt. They're asking him about how pruitt would be remembered and he talks about how you know recruiting had been good Which is obviously ironic considering that they fired him in part because of recruiting violations and fired nine people in total also tied the recruiting department But also just the way that he was talking about how pro had rebuilt relationships and all these different things it felt like to me at least that former was not out on pruitt as a higher to that point. So you know part of it could have been simply that you feel wasn't ready to move on from pruitt and it s part became what we're gonna make just wholesale changes here and i think if you remember paul you know one of the reasons why earlier in the year before we knew about all these recruiting violations. I was always a little skeptical. Pruitt getting fired in part because it would reflect poorly on former. And i didn't think four would want to move on from his higher Like you said he just gave an extension to after only three seasons as the head coach
Georgia names Josh Brooks athletic director
"Josh brooks who just recently took over for greg mcgarity as a new athletic director at the university of georgia where he had previously. Been the top assistant josh. First of all congratulations and thanks so much for coming good afternoon. Any thanks for having me fall. It's great to have you and you know. This is one of those jobs that all aspiring administrators want to have the especially working having. You got your masters there after going to lsu and working under greg. I'm interested in what it was like to be his opposition and ultimately to to move in as he retired well thankfully greg's been a great mentor from me especially these last few years. He's really giving me a peek behind the rope as a services number to give me a chance to be a part of those big decisions really see you know what he goes day basis how he makes those decisions. He's letting me sit in for him and eighty meetings Whether it be on campus or in the sec. So i really am thankful to greg for the opportunities. He's giving me these last couple of years. That have prepped. Me for this day. And i think combined with that with my knowledge of institution haven't been here. Ten plus years has really served me well and made me comfortable to sit in this chair on day. One genesis has been quite a year to be an administration that there was a time many many years ago when a lot of a lot of former football coaches would move into that position. I'm not saying it was ceremonial but there was usually someone underneath. Who did the heavy lifting those days are over. These are tough jobs especially coming off of a a difficult and challenging twenty season. What does it look like just short term to try to for all of us to get out of where we been from this pandemic and to start seeing some sunshine again. Yeah hopefully you know. We're all tracking the numbers. And we're hoping that that we're at that peak point right now coming out of new year's and knowing that the vaccines are starting to be distributed but you brought them interesting point about former football coaches or former coaches moving into the role and now primarily most or came up through administration. There's not a lot of eighties have actually coached There's a lot these who played but not who've actually coached so. I think that gives me interesting. Take that. I've been on that coaching side. Being football off-spinner assistant coach for number years. It's given me another perspective. Combine that with the ministry of experience. That's really helped me as well in this role but you talk about moving out of covid. We've got remain optimistic. We've got a hope for the best and the worst. You're already planning four g. day. We've got the limited seats ready in case but obviously like i said hope for the best keep progressing but we've got to prepare and plan for every scenario moving forward josh. I realize you're you're you're barely ended the job you start questioning you on on things that We'll take some time to sort out but with every athletic director and georgia probably better equipped at the most because of the success of the program. How do you deal with the loss of revenue. We're does it affect or how does it affect the program. The most well thankfully paul. We have a phenomenal team here. From our development staff and our ticket staff we put in a really great plan in august. We knew that we'd have limited capacity and it was a fan. I concept put forward. We offered every donor the opportunity to get a full refund on their tickets and that was without any caveat so if they got a full refund they would lose their seats for next year and that that was something that we really that was going to be tough because we knew a lot of people will take that refund put back into that our development ticket office went to those donors and said hey. Listen if you let us keep a portion or or the what we refund of your ticket portion donation portion and converted to a cova relief fund. We'll give you triple points towards your priority for seat back for seating so that effort and that was very meticulous and they put in a lot of hard work and we have the best fans in the nation we were. We were able to recoup twenty two million dollars of that that big number that we always strive for so that help put a big dent in what our financial situation was along with the fact that our business office has done a phenomenal job of being focusing on essential. Expense mission critical. And everybody's bought in and we are one of the few departments in the country. I would say that have not had to lay people off now. That fuller employs. And that's important to me. Because i'm a people person. People come first so a combination of what our development office and take it off so done and the business office were sitting in you know. We obviously still have challenges to go. And we're we're going through that but we're in. We're gonna come out of this. I think in pretty good shape when it's all said and done
Notre Dame Lands Marcus Freeman At Defensive Coordinator
"Just ended the last hour talking about the reports. That bo pollini is going to get four. Four million dollar lump sum payoff to to after being fired as the defensive coordinator and there's been a lot of speculation and even some reports that the That lsu was on the verge of hiring. Marcus freeman from the university of cincinnati. But pizza animal has just reported that he is going to notre dame instead of always breaking stories literally as he's coming on the air here pete great to have you on. This was a much watched battle between a number of schools for marcus freeman. Good afternoon and tell us what happened. Well i this is what one of the more public and hotly contested coordinator Tussles that i can recall in In in recent seasons anyway there's been a few a few of them over the years and You know we'll we'll we'll never know only only the only the folks in the grotto will really know How much notre dame has a market because their private but you know. Lsu lsu is ready to pay him Both leaning plus money and You know he went to both places this week. And i think at the end for For marcus freeman. Who is cincinnati. Thirty three might be thirty four year. Old defensive coordinator and the architect of that That great cincinnati defensive wanted this year one the afc and then Loss to george on a last second field goal in the in the peach bowl. I think for for marcus. There was geography and You know there will be some stability right. You got notre dame brian. Kelly is just steady ship there and You know there was a lot attractive. I think about. Lsu they were. I think on for twenty four until defense or some some number that would be easily improved upon with some new blood in better schemes. And obviously they probably have more raw talent down there so i mean really a really a compelling decision for a bright young coach. Call that we're going to be hearing a lot about in the In the next couple of the next couple of years course the next guy will probably not be thrilled to because all the attention was on freeman. But where does she go next. That's a that's a really good question really. Good question You know they they. They made hard shortages at At freeman and he was he was clearly be The target and the guy they wanted. And i i don't know From ahead who. Who were they go next. You know there's a lot of people have preserved our net at mississippi state right now Chain being made around adam this week. There's been rumblings if texas is going to go after in the chris ash Won a national title As buyers defensive coordinator at ohio state six seven years ago. It was the head coach at rutgers in the news at texas last year. And she's got a lot better on defense under wraps. I think that's that's another name right. Now let's That's brewing through the The the defensive coordinator mill show there will There will be options. And if we know and scott woodward they will be addressed.
College football: Georgia beats Cincinnati in Peach Bowl
"Tim. Brando has returned and we are always excited to welcome. Tim brando back to our show and tim. Thank you for the time. Happy new year and man. Is there a lot to talk about. Yeah and even some of it is in sports too. You know a little bit of it has to do with sports up. And i've never been happier to be involved in sports right now. I can tell you that this is a this is a good day to cure about a college football game because otherwise you might need. You might shift drink. But let's keep it on college football before we get to monday night because certainly there's plenty of analysis. I couldn't help but think of you. On on friday as cincinnati was holding on dearly and ultimately lost to georgia in the peach bowl just You had been way out front arguing for others to be included in the party and they certainly acquitted themselves quite well. Yeah unfortunately you know this. Perception is reality. But sometimes the realities are when you wind up. Paul with A magnificent championship match up. And i will concede that that's what we have. I mean let's face it. We're talking about the two premier programs with the two largest brands from the two cities that get the highest ratings in sports television columbus. Ohio being second in birmingham alabama. Being one we're talking about the the the cfp really getting very fortunate. I mean really really fortunate. Because you know i certainly didn't believe in ohio state To be clemson the way they did. And i saw enough of ohio state during the regular season to know that they did not perform anywhere. Close to that Until that game was played. Which i think gives you know you have to give a lot of credit ryan day for having his staff and really his own gain planning so schematically superior to davos sweeney and clubs. That's you know brent. Venables is an outstanding defensive coordinator arguably considered maybe with dave aranda. Now is the head coach the best in the country and they were absolutely woodshed. It by ohio state and they did it. Schematically with two tight ends what they call twelve personnel football speak and utilizing the tied in and other receivers in a way that they have not done all season long. certainly they didn't do any of that against northwestern football team that defensively had the their team in a position to possibly beat ohio state in the big ten championship. I mean if it weren't for trae sermons Who had an unbelievable record breaking performance rushing the football. You know ohio state. Does it win that game against pets. It's gerald steam. So i think it was a legitimate by most of that cover football on a regular basis that simpson. Just add way. Too much ammunition and from a defensive standpoint would be able to handle what Been a relatively Understandable offense to defend. You know if you take care of justin feels and you double alava at wide receiver. You should be able to handle them well. That certainly was not the case in this game. So the cfp gets break with this matchup but that doesn't stop the thought process that that cincinnati gave everyone a reason to understand my point of view on this and so many others feel similarly that this is a team deserves to be playing for something a lot more than they were against georgia. They were two yards away all on third into and really didn't have to convert the third to if all they had done is just run the football as opposed to pass it Georgia would have had twenty five thirty thirty five fewer seconds to work with to get the ball to field goal range for fifty three yarder to win it. So i would contend that cincinnati's not just not getting the two yards but just deciding to throw the football rather than run. It was the difference in winning and losing. And and i think if that had happened the narrative wouldn't just be all my god. How great a matchup we have. We know how state alabama the narrative would also be. God did you see cincinnati. You know i mean did you. And they put iowa state with two losses above them. They they they dropped them to spots. I mean cincinnati's case would have been so much different. Had they been able to pull that off against georgia. But but i think people that are smart enough. That really understand the grander landscape of college. Football get the point and that is teams like cincinnati belong the ratings. Prove it too by the way. The highest rated new year's six game on your employers air by far was the cincinnati georgia game that means the game against north carolina and by the way eight. Mp team's gonna wind up at the top four right but you know it was that was a glorified exhibition. It did not rate the way cincinnati's game rating with georgia. It just didn't so imagine if that game was cincinnati were game. That mattered. That really matter. i dare say it would make a huge difference in the mindset of so many people as it relates to expansion of college football. Football's player
Texas A&M HC Jimbo Fisher Says He Hurt Hamstring Running from Gatorade Bath
"Grace. You welcome our friend. Lucia program from texas eggs. And billy. thank you for being here. It's always good to see the most important question. I have and i think every aggie fan in america wants to know this. How is jimbo. Fisher's hamstring tonight. Man all i know is this. I would've i would've probably blown thing. And jimbo's got a few years on me and he said he had run into sprint like that for a while so he probably had to put that thing on ice or he. Whatever you do you know. He probably had that he was moving. I mean that was. He was probably a close second to divine chain on saturday. Night for fastest guy on that field.
"paul finebaum" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show
"Dot com. We'll talk about the big news of yesterday in a few minutes. John has written quite skillfully about but john. I want to start with a couple of items that you mentioned in your column from earlier in the week and i'm going to get to auburn in a minute where things are always cooking. But you talked about lsu another tumultuous week for the tigers and you know they go to gainesville and then the university Announces the try to get through this with a straight face helped me please That is self imposing a bowl ban on school on a team. That very likely will. We'll do no better than five hundred and could do worse. You almost have to respect. How brazen is paul. I mean it's such a laughable move to enforce the ban win a. I mean as you pointed out record isn't very good and given all the challenges have had between opt-outs claire issues. It's hard for me. Imagine that what you wanna play a full anyway. So you had an opportunity earlier in the year to enforce a bowl ban on. They're kind back and forth. But the ncaa didn't wanna do it. Dan so we do it now. Everybody can just see now. They're trying to do so. Maybe it works but not believe the. Ncaa is incapable of critical thinking. I will seek out of see through that move there but certainly there their challenges employees in lsu right now on the other day a great story looking at that situation. The challenge is already really one of the teams that you look back on. It's harder. Mac tarts really remember a team struggling as much as lsu has with all the issues that come with that coming off a national championship the year. Before i was reading your column the other day. John and you talk about people within the industry insiders people that you talk to every day and you know talking about the future of that. Does ron and i did a double take. And i'm not naive. I feel like you know me and you pretty well but it's still struck me that a year ago. This man was the toast of the college football industry. The national coach of the year the national champion. And how could he be in trouble. And i asked that tongue in cheek because i did read your column. It just shows how quickly things can change. I think you know as well as anybody. I mean jean auburn situation. I think is probably the perfect example Esther how fastens can change. And you know if you're a certainly don't want to be compared to jean who is a very nice man but things didn't work out the end for auburn there and i think the challenge that faces that was similar to chisholm. Is that when things started going. Bad with And again it started going after. Gus malzahn left. What happened as you remember is that people basically gave malzahn credit for the national team. Of course if cam newton as well you started seeing just not really getting the credit for winning. That i'm already seeing some of that. Lsu in which people were pointing to joe burrow. Joe brady dave aranda as roy. The reasons for that national championship game and stuff starts to happen. I flicked the cases. Almost starring to be made as to. Why is ron doesn't deserve all the credit for the national championship. And why maybe he isn't the guy for the long-term future air. So i can just tell you. Within the industry there was a lot of interest around that job. No one expects it to come open this year but there are certainly some high level coaches would love a shot at it if it were to ever come open and they're not picking a decade down the line and they're thinking that the next year or two that job to come open especially next year continued to really struggle you see more opt-outs more transfers all of a sudden you start to cultural problems with some of the other issues that are going on there and it starts getting a little easier easier to imagine a move john not with us. You know you talk about the future in terms of ed- on what about the president for gus malzahn familiar late season conversation but this year the seems to be loud. Yeah i mean. I think back to one of my favorite bands talking heads. You know once in a lifetime and the situation is same as it ever was. You know it feels like every year we get to the end and you know it looks like is on the hot seat. You've got you know some powerful boosters trying to work behind the scenes to to see if they're move can be made and gushes kind of battle to hang on. We've seen it in the past when just kind of was on the ropes and then he beats georgia alabama and gets a massive extension so everything is kind of feels like on the table for auburn and like we said in the past ball. You should never make a decision purely just off of one game. But i do think this is important weekend for because a lost mississippi state given all the challenge. They've had this year Certainly would not pretend to a lot of positive momentum going into next year and no matter how much he says he thinks it's going to be a special year and i think you can never discount the emotion that comes with high level irs so a bad loss to mississippi state and you might see some people can to really make run at pushing gus out so i think this is certainly of a movie night. The most exciting slate of games this weekend. The game on paying close attention to is mississippi state. Let me close with another line. You had from this article a year ago. You talked about how as this deal was closing. This was in december of twenty nine thousand nine. This was really the first big moment for greg. Sankey since taking over i thought about that john and then think about where greg sankey is today with literally the weight of college football on his shoulders. He's gone from the commissioner of the sec. I don't mean to put words in your mouth. But i know how you feel to literally the most powerful and successful person in this in this place and in this platform. What does this deal on. Top of what he has done since covid. Where does this put him. Yeah i mean he's had a tremendous year. And i always think you know me. Well enough paul that. You don't wanna be the sec guy who just only beaten up You know how great the sec is but he deserves a lot of credit for everything eat did over. The last year avocado football season. This year i mean you know how tenuous it was embarrassed. Points this year in the sec. Staying resolved in working behind the scenes to try to keep the acc big twelve yawn or his well..
Sacrifice and stress: How players handled season of COVID-19
"And we welcome all of you back great to have you here in great to have ralph russo with us He's covered college. Football for the ap for not as long as it seems still about fifteen years. He's seen it all especially during this season of covert and he's written about that today at a piece entitled sacrifice shrek how players handled the season of covert nineteen row. Thank you so great to have you on. Hope you had a good holiday. And i know you'll be a while before you get to the next holiday thank you. Thanks so much hope. You're you've had a good holiday season. Well it's it's. It's a season that a lot of us wondered about and talked about and during the days of spring and summer and we are really pretty close to seeing it end as somebody who has reported on it every step of the way including today your thoughts. Well you know i. I'm not gonna say. I'm i'm surprised. We had a season. Because i think even. I'm sure i think i was even on with you. And i always kind of felt like gosh even even win the big ten and pac twelve or canceling their season. I always sort of felt like build leagues that. We're just going to try to plow through it and see what happens and and it would always come down to sort of tolerance or disruption. We knew they will be gains cancelled and youth players would miss games. how much disruption would there be. How much would we tolerate. When we say we like fans coaches players university presidents. everybody how much would how much disruption would be tolerated and at the end. Would there be so much that you would sort of look at the season and go is a real season and i think the credit of the players first and foremost and and and coaches and people who had some foresights I you know. I'm not sure this was a success on every level because a lot of players got covid. And i don't want to make light of that but that sort of was the goal to keep them from doing that however they got most of the games in and we had a season that has some structural integrity. And that will be able to crown. Its champion so i'll leave success or not success to others to judge but we definitely got through with the season that kind of looks like a real football season.
How much has Notre Dame closed the gap? We're about to find out against Alabama
"Let's move on college football. Alabama notre dame set the plate for the first time since the two thousand twelve. Bcs national championship game the crimson tide. One by twenty eight points now. That's just one of several high profile losses. Notre dame has suffered over the last twenty years. Take a look at this and take it. And since nineteen ninety eight notre dame has lost all six of its bcs and nuhere six bowl games most recently to clemson and the two thousand eighteen cotton bowl now the fighting irish been outscored by one hundred and forty four points during that span yet. Here is brian kelly. What they have the proof. We're knocking at the door every year playing really good teams great opponents and there's a league football team You know i i. I don't know why this narrative continues to pop up when we're always in the games. No we haven't won a national championship. That's correct I'm not changing the record but we are there every single year and we are grinding it out just like everybody else. Twelve paul finebaum and joey galloway. Paul what is your reaction to brian. kelly's comments well. He not only has notre dame not won a national championship. They haven't even competed in these games. And i think that's really the issue here ryan but brian. Kelly is trying to lower the expectations even lower than they already are. Most people think alabama is going to completely viscera them friday afternoon. And i don't know how you could argue at that point. He's trying to bake into the cake. Listen we're we're a great program we're notre dame we're in the playoffs every year or two. We just can't win the big one. So don't blame me. Don't blame my players. It's a crazy approach. But he's just trying to keep his team calm before they walk into the slaughter friday afternoon it's astounding to me. If he's actually thinking that way the idea of don't worry guys. Were still good no matter what so joey. It makes me think to brian. Kelly point do we hold notre dame to an unfair standard on the other side of that. I don't think it's unfair. Standard people just want to see the four best teams in the country and they wanna see good gains when it gets into college football playoff and if they're not good games than the question always arises. Did you deserve to be there now. I do believe that. Notre dame's four best teams in the country. And i believe they have been You know in recent years when when they get into the playoff and so i don't look at the end result and say well. They didn't deserve to be there absolutely earned their right to be their way. They've played this season. I think this is a better football team that we've seen in recent years unfortunately for notre dame going against a ridiculously good offense in alabama. So it's gonna be tough
Louisiana State University parts ways with Bo Pelini after one season as Tigers overhaul defensive coaching staff
"There are multiple reports out there right now. That bo pollini is gone from. Lsu that Experiment did not work very well. So several media outlets reporting this hour. That bo pollini is not coming back on twenty one. That was certainly the most controversial decision that it owes. You're on made let's Welcome in stewart. Mandel to the program. Stuart thank you very much Before we even get to the ball situation. I'd like to get your thoughts on that Well paul i gue-. I guess i would say that. That's something that we've all expected. Since about the second game of the season it just a bad higher and you know it's interesting that a year ago Does ron was getting all the praise in the world for an inspired Higher joe brady the passing game coordinator. Who kinda helps And it was instrumental in joe burrow's rise and that national championship. And then you had some staff changes to make this after this past season and we hire both lean. He's a big name and he's had success before and i get that but it just seemed like it was just such a terrible fit. He tried to revamp their scheme entirely. And this was a program. That had success under dave randall. On defense it wasn't broken. Tried to completely revamp the scheme regardless of the personnel. They lost so many guys to the draft last year and then and then even more before the season. And i just wasn't a good fit and just just a historically bad defensively shoot this year.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey
"It's important to provide clarity and that altered my thinking so that i can help. Young people understand where we're heading football players volleyball soccer players. Were asking the same question. Cross country student athletes. Those were really important and when our football player said is going to be meaningful in paul you have to go back to the uncertainty of july and try to figure out. Well how do you answer that question. I i hope it meant something when i presented the trophy to vanderbilt soccer team. I said thank you to them and they said thank you back you know. We provide an opportunity. Next thing you know. Sarah fuller becomes story and her jersey and helmet from really unique circumstances in the college football hall of fame right down the street. That doesn't happen if we don't try. I said in september last year was was. Lsu's time and joe burrow's time not knowing who's time it might be this year but it's not as if time passes and you get it again and that's why i thought it was important was because it's about them not about tickets and tv and money and there's plenty of rhetoric about that and you know what we sell. Tickets put things on tv. But i was asked to try to provide an opportunity. And i asked my staff to work to provide that opportunity. I worked with our presidents and chancellors to provide the opportunity We're still working on that or athletic. Directors are coaches and it has been difficult but it is a reward in itself and we want everybody to be healthy. we never waver from that reality. We disrupted games where we still tried to fulfill what i was asked during the summertime and I take that is a great sense of accomplishment For all of us. Georgia Bulldogs announce no make-up game for Vanderbilt Commodores cancellation
"Always great to Welcome back mike griffith to the program and mike. Let's start with the georgia bulldogs. After a spectacular saturday. They were hoping for one more game. It had already been postponed and now it has been canceled in what has been the reaction there and can anything be done about well. We're not gonna probably ever have anything like this in the future but really curious about your thoughts. Yeah a lot of fury. A lotta anger at georgie. No i it's twofold one georgia's playing great football. Jt daniels i mean before jt. They convert forty two percent of the third downs with jt. They convert sixty six right. Jt daniel six touchdown passes on on third down throws three incompletions. I mean the guys night and day. It's been amazing. Some people maybe. It's the schedule actually know if you look at the third down defense is the last. Three teams actually ranked better than the first six on average. What georgia's played. This guy has made all the difference in the world. It makes a difference in recruiting. Suddenly you have players. That are migrating to georgia that. Want to be a part of the georgia offense again so this transformation is happening in the shadows. Now that's georgia's fault. They didn't take care of business when they needed to jacksonville or in tuscaloosa and so they're sitting out this week so you don't get to see it but it's been happening on saturdays in athens and this georgia outgoing class. All these guys had an opportunity to be the winningest class in georgia football history. That's quite a legacy. But because vanderbilt canceled out all they can do is tie that mark now and so the a piece of their legacy is gone understand. Covid nineteen is not controllable but in the case of vanderbilt its players that are quitting the team and in the case of vanderbilt they cancelled on december fifth rally the troops for their senior day on december twelve and then canceled on georgia again. After the fact so georgia couldn't even get an alternative game that was acceptable for the senior day. So there's a lot of of anger and frustration and disappointment and all george can do now is hope that they get a good bowl draw. I think they need notre dame to upset clemson. I think if that happens. And if chalk holds and ohio state beat the bad northwestern and alabama roles florida. You could see georgia clemson in the orange bowl and i think that could excite the georgia fan but as things currently project. You're looking maybe. Cincinnati georgia in which case. Maybe some georgia guys opt out and say you know what it's cincinnati. It's it's not a real game.
Vanderbilt hires Clark Lea as head coach
"Vanderbilt announced it has a new football coach. And we're going to talk a lot about that this afternoon. He is clark lee. that's right. He played football at vanderbilt lately. He's been coaching at notre dame linebacker coach and seventeen the dc since eighteen fullback. At vanderbilt about eighteen years ago he's kosher wake syracuse bowling green and ucla and he comes highly regarded according to most experts.
Chris Doering talks Florida and Georgia
"We welcome in chris during Who gives us her. Quite a look ahead to tomorrow's game. Chris in most years florida hosting lsu of the sec this week. It's been pretty quiet. I am curious as you know those two teams so well especially from florida side What what are they thinking as they get one of their bitter rivals in a bitter rival that they are a prohibitive favorite. It is weird. Isn't it paula. Me and thinking back to win. This game was originally scheduled. I thought most lsu people felt like we're gonna get a chance to play later in the year we'll get healthier. We'll get miles brennan back. We'll be in better position. And i would argue that. They're actually in a worse position now than when they were originally scheduled in october. So i it's kind of a weird dynamic with a lotta florida. Fans looking forward to sec. Championship game next weekend for me. This is all about. Florida has nothing to do with their opponent. Lsu it's about getting right offensively full full-fledged dress rehearsal right costumes everything. Let's go for what we're gonna do next week. I i honestly been kind of disappointed with florida's offensive performance. The last three weeks dating back to the vanderbilt came. Because they just look inconsistent. They look like they walk through a haze periods of time. They look like they're not executing and part of it's their own fault for looking so good against arkansas in the second half and missouri against georgia. We set the bar pretty high for them but focused level has not been there for a full sixty minutes. I want to see all fence. Get back to executing at the level. They were early in the year defensively. Let's get some things shored up. Let's figure out how to keep from giving up these long passing plays. Let's get generate some more pressure on the quarterback. Let's be able to to penetrate and stop the run something. I thought they did. Well against tennessee last week but The thing i'm gonna keep my paul. What are the numbers for. Kyle trask because obviously this is a game as you said against a A bitter rival one. That beat florida by fourteen. Last year florida's got a chance to return the favor but they also have a chance to outduel in back to back weeks what mack jones get did against the very same defense. And don't think that winning the heisman trophy is not something that dan mullen really wants. For contrast and something that will help his program significantly going forward in on that subject. How do you compare. Kyle trash to meg jones. And that's really his main competition now and that we know we know what had next two weeks especially next week but what what what what separates college trask. If anything well first of all. I love both of these guys you know as a former receiver. I love the the accuracy. I love the the the way they re defenses and get the ball to the right guy. On what the defense is dictating But i would go back and say kyle. Traffic is probably had a tougher. Time than what mack jones at and. That's not taking anything away. From mac ios but look at how. Good this offense of line is for alabama. Look at how well they've run the football over the last six games or so look at what. Najji harris has done. Devante smith the reason why iraq jones's numbers look so good on the deep passes over twenty yards and no disrespect. Mac has been really accurate. But when you're throwing a guy that's five yards behind the nearest defender. It makes it a little bit easier. So again i think without the run game florida certainly not able to run the football very well. I don't think they're offensive. Line is the most consistent So i think the load that kyle. Trask bears a little bit harder to to carry them. What jones does now with that being said. Look at the weapons of florida has i. I don't think i've ever been able to say at least in recent years. That florida has more receiving weapons around their quarterback than what alabama does. They've been absolutely loaded but Looking at the way that that not only kind of is utilized trayvon. Grimes justin shorter. All those receivers. Jacob copeland has come on as well Forgetting about tony. Who might be one of the biggest Factor mismatch guys in the sec. Right now but the way. They use the running backs as well. That was something that we saw against georgia so a lot of different guys. That are helping. Kyle trask out. But i think with the advantage that alabama has on the offensive line and that run game to complement the throws down the field. I think kyle may have a little bit more of a impressive Season just because of how much he's had to do himself chris. Couple of games. I want to ask you about one. Particular auburn at mississippi state mississippi state has been up and down we. We've been through that conversation. But i'm really curious about auburn. Because they've had some really good moments this year and then some clunkers especially lately. I know what you're doing here paul. You love it. When i go off on auburn and it's been up and down year with them right early in the season. I was really down on him. I was starting to get A little bit more positive with the way they were able to run the run the football figuring out who they were with take bixby and that offensive line and then they got hit with a bunch of injuries up front Bixby was was banged up.
Matt Stinchcomb previews Vanderbilt/Tennessee and talks about Sarah Fuller
"Seems like we've talked about tennessee a few times this year and i'm really interested in your view of them and Especially you know trying to shalva season with vanderbilt tomorrow. Am the next week. The schedules obviously been rearranged a little bit. Where are they right now. Bad spot Lots of season in a game vs vanderbilt non place you want to be. If you're tennessee. Football program your rewind all the way to the beginning of the season writing that winning streak and then getting a victory vs south carolina and then going on the road and putting it on missouri. I mean running the football right down their throat to the point where i think it changed. Who missouri was defensively. Going forward made him a better football team kind of steeled their resolve not to have that happen again because tennessee almost two hundred forty seven rushing yards on them in that football game. It's been the same sense. I will have to say that most people. I think observing the program even outside of the quarterback position and the circumstances that all teams have found themselves in this year. This has been really disappointing year for tennessee football. They've got two more shots at. It is a very short handed vanderbilt. Football program could get on the field georgia. It'll be interesting to see if tennessee can put together a convincing performance versus their in state conference member i. i wouldn't even call it. A rival per se for tennessee's perspective although Tennessee vanderbilt had some success versus the balls in recent years. Easy man on talk shows to blame coaches but there is obviously more to it. But as you look at jeremy pruitt and his staff. I'm curious how you would evaluate or analyze some of the decisions especially at quarterback because a lot of people feel like jeremy was was really slow to make a change. Yeah quarterbacks been an interesting adventure for tennessee to say. The least. I mean even last time out versus the florida gators harrison bailey. Obviously getting out there and then comes out of the game briefly. Brian our goes in but then. Jt shrout finishes finishes the game. We haven't seen a lot of either one of those guys. Jt shroud got in earlier. In the season jarod guarantee no Start out rough to say the least versus kentucky and what ended up being a blowout loss at the hands of the wildcats at home. Jt shrout through pass for an interception in that one football game and then to see him late last week and had some success in two series versus the florida gators. But it's it's been kind of all over the place at the quarterback position and largely been that way for two seasons. Really paul when you think about the way. They had to manage the quarterback position last year. And i would argue masterfully. Really given where. Jerry guarantee no been mentally after the gulf called. Qb sneak versus alabama. When tennessee was still very much in that football game ends up going the other direction the idea that they were able to still salvage the back. End of that season was was really impressive from a coaching standpoint. This season the quarterback position has remained an issue to say the least and the lack of consistency and even in the past couple of weeks in harrisonburg getting his first start versus florida a week ago. It's still not a known commodity. We'll talk to tennessee later on today. We've not visited with him yet to find out what exactly can expect to get their quarterback tomorrow versus the commodores one program with a six game losing streak the other with a nine game. I mean i guess there is only. There is some light at the end of the tunnel. That one team has to win. But i mean this. This is a mess. Matt i realize this late in the year and it's a stranger at that but on the other side of vanderbilt. We all know the story pretty well. The coaching change the future unknown. Give us give us your assessment of of where they are right now with with a chance to at least be tennessee. That would that would be big. It'd be huge And it's still going to be an uphill climb. I mean you look at their roster. There's no way they've got fifty scholarship players available in this football game. They're choosing to play the game. It's admirable because vanderbilt different. I think it's well documented that they're different from any of the other member institutions southeastern eastern conference but none more so than in the area of roster roster management in a year where everyone is incredibly lean. This point in time memorable would be lean anyway. Even in regular circumstances they don't have a ton of walk on. There's not a lot of kids lining up to pay that tuition to pay full freight and have that academic rigor. Oh and by the way all week you get a practice. Football games probably never see the field and likely watch. Your teammates get beat down. It's just something that a lot of people are signing up for. They don't have a lot of bodies they don't have a lot of kids to even be able to practice. So it's admirable the vanderbilt's even able to take the field tomorrow. I'll little bit hesitant to say the least. We had them last week in a would be game vs. Georgia got cancelled at noon on friday. It does appear that this game's going to get. Its admirable just enough that the commodores are going to be able to take. The field. Looked like they were turning a corner. Looked like they were going to play better. Football down the stretch. Mississippi state had an opportunity to win. Were undone by turnovers. Still a young quarterback and true freshman kin seals but there last time out versus missouri was a discouraging performance to say the least in. It'll be interesting to see what they're able to cobble together with the personnel. They have available. And what could be their final game of the season if they're not able to get back out there versus georgia we from them. What is the sarah fuller situation for. Tomorrow's best you know as we understand it She will be kicking in football game. We think extra points. is probably the likelihood of win. We will expect to see her in the contest tomorrow but she is available for place kicking duties and it seems as if the point after attempt is the most likelihood most area of likelihood that we could see on the field of play tomorrow. You know there's so much conversation about that. And and i think most reasonable people smiled and we're happy and and celebrated it but you know we both grew up in the south and there are certainly narrow views of what happened. I'm curious just to somebody who played this game at the highest level is also reasonable your thoughts on when it happened. And what you'll see you tomorrow. Yeah you know as a father of daughters the whole thing. The more opportunities The better in that regard. I will say that circumstances in many ways. I don't wanna say forced but created the opportunity for this to have happened in credit sarah fuller for wanting to take advantage of that. I do think that you know the attention that it still garnering. The fact that things have seemingly settled down around the fact that there's a female kicker in a power five game is only help not only her ability to contribute with that football team but the team in general because as we know it is unique and can be a distinct distraction in some ways. A positive distraction but distraction nonetheless and from what we gather and it makes sense that because some time has passed. And maybe perhaps because vanderbilt didn't take the field last week vs georgia. The things have kind of settled down and interestingly and rather quickly surf or has assimilated into that football team and program not an easy thing to do late in the year But i think that speaks to some of the positive elements of this as much as anything else squib make a field goal point after was the fact that she is seemingly a member of the football team and not a novelty. I think that's really where the progress would ultimately be made the fact that so much attention has been garnered around it. That's fine for the first time but if progress is actually being made and if we're opening up our eyes and broadening our rises and just playing the best potential players in these capacities then at some point in time it shouldn't be a novelty to just be something that should be expected. We're not there yet. That's not the case but we're closer this week than we were two weeks ago when she first took the field versus missouri
College Football Playoff contenders waiting to see if Big Ten gives Ohio State title game break
"I wanna talk to you about the big picture. You mentioned ohio state. And i mean. They're they're the topic of conversation right now. We don't know whether the the game this weekend is on. No michigan is attempting to practice. But there's no guarantee that game goes on. so how does this committee Look at look at ohio state and what is the big ten due to try to help their their prize bull because it's all about ohio state in the big ten this year. Yeah i think what we're going to see is no matter what the circumstance is. The big ten is going to find a way to make sure ohio state one gets in that title game and that you know assuming that they're going to win that because i personally think that you know ohio state is headed shoulders. Better than everybody else. I think he could have. Probably honestly you take. Justin feels off that team and they would still be much much much better than the second best team. Whoever you want to pick their whether it's our indiana who else And it's kind of funny right. Ohio say always ends up finding itself in this position. Where if they're not already in it's like hey like j. Should be the fourteen in or maybe they shouldn't be the four team in But i think no matter what here. They should feel pretty confident about their circumstances. You know whether or not they actually play on saturday or not. Because there's just no way that the big ten is going to send any other representative to play off other than ohio state this
The Latest: Las Vegas Bowl canceled because of COVID-19
"The. Sec was now in had become involved with the las vegas bowl being one of the one of the teams. I think they were playing a pack twelve game. That game has now been scrub for this year. According to espn which runs the ball out of its events division so one less bowl game as i expect there will be a few more go by the wayside as the bowl season once in large to slimming
Nick Saban tests positive for COVID-19 again
"Saban has tested positive and is showing mild. Covid symptoms shaven earlier today. I informed the team this morning at ten on zoom call. And i'm a i'm the only person in the whole organization and tested positive on this round so I'm still gonna do everything possible. Relative to our team for saturday's game with auburn. You know sarko kind of you know things in the in the
Stephen .M. Smith and the Iron Bowl
"Stephen smith welcome back from touchdown. Alabama stephen amit always good to see you and great to have you on the program. So it's the week of the iron bowl you've been high on the tide. Since the first time we talked during the summer. let's start with mag jones because you told us. He was different than that was before the public. In the heisman voters fell in love with him. Absolutely i mean. The young man has been battle tested poise and career. I remember him in the us. Freshmen in two thousand seventeen with the scout team out there throwing bombs and of course coach saban told him stop throwing the ball deep all the time. King looks at cope sabres coach. Tell your defense a check me there so you got a guy with that type about and that type of confidence even check his own coach. Nick sabin that you got yourself a quarterback that can really do some special things. So i knew from mack. Jones the freshman that he was poised to this moment but also seeing the growth that he's made targeted stephen m. smith who stephen m. seems like every every aspect of alabama has gotten better the one that has surprised when people is the is the defense. Because after the ole miss game i i wasn't sure that p golden should be buying green bananas. But what's happened on that side of the ball. The main thing is coke. Sabin and pete goading have done a great job. Simplifying things on times player stink too much. You think about my job and is my teammate. Doing his job. It's the guy in front of me. The guy behind me the guy next to me doing their job. And when you're thinking about so many things of your job is and training your is to be district where confusion comes in so nick. Saban has always been one to say. Do your job and the rest will take care of itself. So she and goading been a great june above of simplifying. The game plan players have done their job. You're seeing more pressure on defense guys stopping the run better. More turnovers created a the big thing here. Paul is essentially omits game. You've looked eleven. Shutout quarters football alabama including a complete game shutout of mississippi state and the team is getting off the theater on third down so a better job of simplifying the game plan and players. You know being concerned about doing their job correctly. It's interesting. we haven't really heard much in the aftermath of jason water when he went down some of the pundits. I remember somebody. Espn said alabama was done. They had no chance of winning the national championship. How has that been dealt with on the team. Because it doesn't seem like and i realized alabama has played a top five team Yet they will seem like they've done quite well without him. I remember a conversation. I had with john. Michie paul about you know. How do you feel. Avoid behind by waddell. He's a one type player. Barry explosive guy would. He got hurt against the volunteers. You heard coach. Sabe say you know. I hurt for college football. Not the fact that saving hearts for alabama. I'm sure he pretty much does but he hurts for college. Football due to people enjoy seeing james waddell on the field. He's fast he's a bottle he's gone. He's energetic he's explosive. He's highly entertaining. Obama has found ways to work. Around this. you've seen slade. Boden return be on kickoffs. Of course he got a twisted ankle against kentucky alabama monitoring jam all week and practice. He should be able to go this week. But we'll see what happens We have seen devante. Smith retiring ponts against kentucky patrick satanic. A second has also field in that role a little bit so save has put he and different guys and that special teams role to try to you know. Fill that void but it's worked out for the most part. It is difficult trying to find that guy that can do know what j. waddell does

Of next week was SMU and Tcu they are. Going to postpone it because they discovered Kovin. Some stat personnel had it. So I mean we've seen that in baseball, but remember three or four weeks ago it looks like baseball was going to get shut down and. Now it's running along fairly well. I don't know but nobody expects it to be perfect but I will say Pat Forty, made this point about. Three hours ago The difference between today and four weeks ago is is stark. I mean we went into the weekend four weeks from a go. Tomorrow and it looked bleak everyone was saying football is done and you know It was done for for two conferences but everyone else has has has marched on. Thank you for the call. Appreciate it very much Brian. Up Next. Hey Brian good afternoon. High Oboe. Hey, there. Hello Yeah go ahead Ryan. I know I. Know Koreatown Town November? Oh well. We'll tell him to call us. An injustice to those who are. Sacrificing and risking whatever they are risking right now to play football. And I'm. Not. Trying. To sound. Petty about this. "Sports radio on twitter. You can write us at Finebaum. I'm joined by my one of my co host and a good friend and somebody who is always enjoys doing this. Finebaum show with me drew Franklin drew how are you. I'm wonderful. I'm like you. I love doing this love the callers I do not now let me I want to give you all a little behind the scenes because a lot of people probably think drew the Paul Finebaum Finebaum show is glamour like its Glamour because they see it on television and Paul sitting there and there's nothing better than when you turn on the S._E._C. Network you see Paul's beautiful face right in front of you because that's what you want you just want him. You want to look at him so they probably think hey when you also finebaum show that's gotta be amazing. Are you on television. We'll know when Drouin Eireann on the Finebaum show it's not on T._v.. It's radio only and we're not wearing suits. We are not as handsome as Paul Finebaum we both are we're not able to be on television but when I get dropped into this show there's a part of me that says okay. I'm going to a different world because Drouin are used to doing Kentucky Bay shows and then I host the E._S._p._N.. A national N._F._l.. pregame show and I'm used to those and then you get dropped into finebaum world and this usually happens to us about three or four times a year and I it takes me a minute to get up to find bomb speed because I don't know what you all have been talking talking about like on my show. Today we talked extensively about the fact that they found a hamburger on the street in Queens. I have a feeling that was not a big topic on Finebaum yesterday. Don't expect to come up probably not we can't talk about if you want but I suspect you don't so one of the things I like to do is I like to sort of ask. What have they been talking about so yesterday? Brad Edwards was was the host I try. I got my car and I tried to turn it on to hear what everyone was talking talking about and I turned it on twice and both times they were talking about the L._S._U.. Locker Room and believe me. What a locker room? I mean of all the locker rooms I've ever seen it is locker room tastic. They've got air pods and beds and like air people. You can charge your phone. Oh my goodness people are acting as if if you walk into the L._S._U.. Locker Room you immediately get into the year twenty three forty five and I love it but I can only talk so much about locker rooms. There's only so so much locker room talk. I can talk and at five fifteen. I have someone coming on the show to talk about the locker room. I'm going to save it for them. So what I did. Is You get assigned. A producer and these producers are wonderful young man we have Spencer Spencer and Alan and you hope drew when you get producers. They will welcome you to the show. Yeah that's their job. That's their job so the first thing that happens is Allen who seems like a nice young man. Allen says is what's the name of the host are no the call or one of the callers. I think this was Lynn is on hold or not laying. Excuse me Matt is on hold and Matt said WHO's hosting the show and would you like to know what Allen said yes. Mike Jones who Mike Jones now. The last name right got so immediately. I feel welcome. It's good to have Mike Jones Alan glad to be here with you my Jones so then I asked Spencer Spencer. Let me ask you a question..

"This is the Paul finebaum show. Best of podcast. And we say Hello to you on a Tuesday lot going on today. Some really good gas a lot of interesting phone calls. Maybe even more than we had yesterday. But one thing that's caught my eye is coaching. Oh, talking about layers sitting out bowl games. Once again, this has become somewhat of an epidemic. Well, maybe not an epidemic, but it certainly widespread. Ed ores Ron does not like it. He's old fashioned. He says the team should come first. Fashioned thinking to team comes first. But you know, I definitely understand that you guys a possible top ten pick. Everybody situation's different. You know, gritties follow ready that those a family decision that he made. So not to go against a decision. Here's here's what I think has got to be in your heart. You gotta wanna be practicing for fifteen practice. You won't be detained. If you don't want to be here. Don't won't you around about bad at it. They'll do a do agree with it, not necessarily, but everybody's different understood a situation. So this has become a big topic of conversation in in college football. When you think about it? Do you think it's a good idea or do you think like coach, Ron, you know, it'd be a team, I sport. I don't know how very many of us can relate to the opportunity to make a lot of money and perhaps. Get ready for that versus hanging out with your team won last time. Or does it say something about some of these bowl games? Anyway, one of the topics that will discuss the show begins now..

"If when Alabama was bad before Sabin got there, did they feel worse about themselves than they do today? Actually not. Here's Alabama football. I mean, there's Bryant and then they're saving in the interim was terrible. I mean, Alabama. How to coach, Alabama, a coach, Mike, do bows wanna championship, but got fired because he was having a relationship. Dennis Francioni came next and he was replaced by a Mike price who never got to his first game because he got into a scandal and then they had more more failure. But at every juncture, Alabama fans either would live off the past or look to the future. They are not. They're not a group that ever doubts who they are and what they are going to be. But but I think your overall point is a good one, but I will tell you one story, Harvey Updike back to him. I got to know him. Not that I really wanted to, but I did. He came to visit me once or twice. I actually visited him in jail and he, I asked him one time. It may have been in jail. I mean, he's in an orange jumpsuit and I said, Harvey, why didn't you do this? Why did you go to a store by pesticide and poison tree? He said, because I had to, I said, you had to. He said, yeah, he said Auburn, cheated to get Cam Newton. We were head of them twenty four to nothing, and and he called him scam. Newton scam Newton brought them back. And then they had the nerve to desecrate the bear Bryant statute at Bryant. Any stadium he said, and I had to do it. I said, you had to do it for whom I did it for Nick Saban. He said, because he couldn't do it himself. And I mean my, he was dead serious. He felt like he had done this. I mean, I'm sure a great defense lawyer could have gotten them off. I think in the end it was some type of insanity plea. I don't know what it was because the guy the guy was off his rockers to a certain degree, but a lot of Alabama fans liked him. They felt like he was standing up for them. Now the elites. The the, the elite alums who sit in the boxers, they wanted nothing to do with this guy. Remember rand, Joe Scarborough's become friends with this guy. This guy should be banned. So of course, he's banned. I mean, this guy back on campus, Joe, but that. That's the economy of a fan base. You always have the the upper crust. Then you got, and I relate. I mean, don't ask me why. I mean, I, we were not wealthy. We were middle class people, and I'm not running for public office on on some socialist campaign, but but I relate to the the average fan who who, who is scorned by by those wealthy people. And they say that this is a part of another part of what we do is they say the those who didn't go to the school have no right to cheer. That's ridiculous. I mean, this is pro football where everybody's a family if you want to cheer for Alabama because you live in Alabama, you you live in Kansas City. That's great. You're still the same fan as the guy who pays fifty thousand one hundred thousand for the box. We will continue in a moment with more of my conversation with Paul finebaum. But I, I want to tell you about linked in, you know, the right hire can make a huge impact on your business, and that's why it is so important to find the right person, but where do you find that into. Visual. You could try posting on the job boards, but can you.

"And so I regret, I wrote a column that gained some notoriety I, my first column was in the aftermath of bear Bryant's death and new era, and eventually I moved into radio, and that took a very long time as well. So. So I most people had not heard of me until I got to, yes, Pnn right before that. But so the career I'm loving every minute of this people say it must be arduous. I know. I mean, I'm in, I'm sitting in New York City. This is where I always wanted to be my family's from here. So I don't care what anyone else says. I mean, I I am at at turns sixty a couple years. I'm having the time my life at a time when most of my friends are long gone from the industry. So how how what were you doing before I knew of you? What were you doing on that? Tuesday before I woke up on Wednesday and said, Paul finebaum is someone I need to know and need to get involved. We were doing a radio show in Alabama greeny and it had expanded to a regional basis. And probably the most significant thing that had happened was Nick Sabin came to Alabama, two thousand and seven. I changed. Radio stations are ratings quadrupled. It was the saving affect that still going on in two thousand and ten Sirius XM picked up our show and it. It gave me an audience and voice to two people that had never heard it before they liked it. They thought it was crazy. It was a caller driven show. We, I say this with all the respect toward you, we were not Mike and Mike where we could grab the A-List guests. I mean, we were in Birmingham, Alabama. So we turned the show into a caller driven show and became an insane asylum. And all of a sudden he's normal people that had never had a voice or celebrities, and I am brace that, and I think that's really what happened. So the show goes national and things that you're on national series. XM is a great medium, but there's a lot of stations. Something happened in two thousand eleven that that probably was the biggest change. We had a guy call our show. He talked. He didn't really believe what he was saying he was. He was rambling on. And then finally, he admitted on the air that he had poisoned the iconic tumors oak trees at Auburn university here our that the iron bowl. Okay. And I thought where they put a scam, New Jersey owned, bear Bryant's statue. Well, let me tell you what I did. I went to Auburn, Alabama, Khalil, thirty miles away. You're not poisoned the to tumors traits that they, they're not dead yet, but they, they definitely will roll damn tied. Nothing happened for couple about two weeks later, the story blew up. The guy's name was Harvey Updike. It became one of the biggest stories in college football, and if you're not an Auburn fan and he'll follow the south, these trees are the are their religious experience for Auburn fans after every win. They roll them with toilet paper. There were tears and that that became part of a thirty for thirty by ESPN. Roll tide war eagle, which gain me some more notoriety. But the biggest moment of my career interestingly was because of a print article went right back to the beginning in two thousand and at the end of two thousand twelve, the New Yorker magazine had not done a piece on a college football person in about ten years. David remnant highly respected editor..

"Welcome back to I'm interested. I'm Mike Greenberg and my guest this week absolutely fascinates me by the way I have had people tell me that I use the word interested too much podcast. I'm going to do my best not to people telling me to drinking game. Now, people are listening to the podcast and they're taking drink every single time I used the word interested and just as quick side, I have a terrible personal association with that because when I was in college, I remember going to the Wrigley field bleachers to watch a cubs game and we were, we used to do a beer and inning. And then we decided one game we were going to do a beer run, and the cubs gave up eight runs in the first inning, and I don't remember much of the rest of that day, so I must be careful with those things anyway. I digress the the idea here for those of you who are new to our podcast is that I just find interesting people and talk to them about the things that make them interesting to me. And my guest this week is someone who is a phenomenon that I don't know that I fully understand. But over the course of the next forty, five minutes or so, hopefully we will figure it out. He is the mouth of the south. He had hosts and incredibly not just successful, but I think important from a sports perspective, radio program, hosted TV show on the SEC network is part of college game day, which I think at this point is ESPN's most successful show most significant show and has become an incredibly important part of it. He's Paul finebaum and here's the way Paul I will start. Why are you looking at me like then I just can't believe I'm here, but anyway, keep going where where were you otherwise expecting to be? No, I'm just I'm loving this introduction. Okay. Well, that's good. Thank you. I pride myself on those. Here's how I would describe you. My knowledge of you. I've been SPN a longtime. I've worked in the media, a longtime, and I feel like on a Tuesday, I had never heard your name in my life. And on Wednesday, you are one of the three or four most important voices in the sports conversation. Paul finebaum. How did that happen? I, I would love to give you a dissertation that that sounded intelligent and well-thought out in even maybe a Ted intellectual, but but I don't think there's an easy answer. What I did greenie is I was a newspaper guy. I loved it. I never thought anything would be better than that. I felt like if I hadn't gotten to the New York Times by age thirty, my life was going to be over and it didn't work out. I got involved in some things, especially lawsuit that circumvented my career from progressing and I was devastated. So then I became a columnist knocked around Alabama, and it just kept moving down the road a little bit. And a couple years ago, it finally happened where people outside of a very small region began to to hear my name. So I don't. I know you talked a lot of people that that sometimes. Pinch themselves and they're not really sure where they are. I'm one of those because I've seen it from all sides in. I don't. I still don't believe that even though I love hearing what you said. I'm not sure I quite buy in to that description. Is the the loss that you refer to? Is that public knowledge about? I don't know at what happened. In another lifetime I was newspaper reporter. I was an investigative sports reporter. And we broke a story. I won all these awards that usually get you the next level. And I had a job at the Philadelphia Inquirer that I was about to go except the job on Monday, and they called me Sunday afternoon and said, we don't need you. We've just found out you were in a lawsuit, and it was one of the most devastating moments of my life that this whole career that I'd built from college came to an end and in some ways, I'm not sure I still have recovered from that because that's what I wanted to do. I'm glad now and see the state of the newspaper business. What year was this is in the early eighties also interviewed and Chicago. I thought that was going to get a job there..
