"Back. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. I looked this up earlier because she freezes record at old miss is a little bit deceiving. And I say that for this reason, if you go to the official records, he freezes record, there is 12 and 25 and you go, hold on a second. That could not be true. What that includes are the 27 wins that the 27 games that you strike out there. So it's a little bit, yeah, those are vacated wins. He was overall 56 and 42 in ten. That's overall in his career. Now, on this, obviously, is a little different situation. I looked up his SEC record because I think that's really the only record that matters quite frankly. You can't pad the SEC. And this is including a game against Vanderbilt every year at Ole miss. He was 19 and 21, I think he had a losing record against SEC west teams, not that any of that matters, by the way. Legend is up next. Good afternoon. Hey, my brother. Legend. The paid. The paid laden saint program. No one got them a coach, Ethan. Whoo. I have the credit cards. Follow the one thing. Does he get a

"Something. This has been the most aggravating irritating underachieving football team that many people, many, including myself, were just shows how common I am, thought that they might replicate 2020 same on just run rock John through college football. Are you kidding me? That Quinn, you were not got hurt. They might have passed for 6 hundred yards on a UK Gibbs off the team. They lost four games period. I mean, why do you want to send them to getting their ass kicked by somebody in the playoffs? Oh, I don't want that. And all I was saying, the answer was that there is a mathematical possibility. I know exactly what you're saying. And I know you were being prothesis before when you said, well, maybe next saving a winner championship next year. Let me remind people, Bryce Jones is going to be gone. Gives us gone. Those two one defensive end that I think the kid that transferred to Arkansas is that produced both of them as far as facts go. I mean, who are they going to be next year? No, they got to read their schedule is not as difficult next year because they have Tennessee and LSU at home. Well, good. Who are they going to have for players? I'm sure let me sound like a fan here, okay? Coach Saban will find them. He'll go to the he'll go to the local mall and buy some new ones. "On Saturday and at that the only thing I saw only from the skies were volunteers, okay? There was nothing else and actually Palestinians to be thankful for that because if it was perfect weather, don't you want to put up 20 to 25 more points on them, right? So I have one last thing to say goodbye to rocky top. Rocky talk town. Is that young lady we had on the show Friday still singing, wearing Tennessee orange, she's done with that song. She was wearing red Saturday. Yeah. I don't know if I like that. I mean, I realized she went to Georgia, but she made a bunch of money off of Tennessee nation. And then she turned her back. Okay. I don't know when we've ever had, I think we need to take a break here. I don't know if we'd ever had more people trash one caller in the first hour of the show than today. We're heading to the break. Legend is next. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Late on a Monday afternoon, early evening. Legend is next. "So I never I didn't spend I didn't spend I hardly spent any time around where they were. Now, on the other hand, I will say I was walking out of my room the other night. I'm walking down the hallway getting on the elevator and some guy yells at me. And I didn't even know I just said, hey, you don't know, you figure there are sports fan. And then he gets on the elevator. He gets on the elevator with me and we have the most incredible 15 minute conversation about, I'm still having tried to figure out what it is. So the question I asked all the audience, what head coach was I talking to that after 15 minutes, I didn't know what the I didn't know what the subject of the conversation was. I've eliminated hypo, you want to take a swing at which one of the 13 coaches it was. I'm sure if it was Shane beamer, you would immediately recognize him. I'm trying to think, I know you know Eli drinks with you. I know it. Let me add one thing to the equation here. I knew who he was. I just didn't understand what we were talking about. How about that? Oh, you didn't know what you were talking about. Okay. Okay, I'm going to I am going to leave that one hanging. I'm not trying to play a trick question here. So once again, it wasn't hypo, I've already said that. It was an SEC head coach. And I want to add to the edge of this question. We had an absolutely wonderful conversation. It wasn't as if it was rude. We wrote down the elevator. We're talking, we get down to the lobby, and we continue talking. This is one reason I didn't get a chance to spend much time on that reception because I was on my way to the reception when I ran into this head coach. So we talked for ten to 15 minutes, it was an out of body experience. We go to the break and I asked the question, who was I talking to, which SEC coach wasn't? Anyway, we'll take a break. More of your phone calls at 855-242-7285. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We'll get a couple of guesses. "Never read the Bible. I'm sure he heard the name of Jesus because the name you would hear in any religious context. But I reflected, I said, but this man and somehow he knows Jesus. Through the work of the Christian community. And he was open to them to do something for him. That's a fake. That's faith. That's confidence. Absolutely. Absolutely. So how we have this relation will let God be the judge of that. I agree with that. You said I'm saying Jim. Yeah, I absolutely see what you're saying. So you reminded me of what you said though, remind me what you said about something good happened. You know, I love the story in the Bible about Peter when Peter, wherever he walked while he was after he had to Jesus and rose from the dead. They said, people were healed just where he walked. That's our struggle. The annoying was on him. And perhaps that was exactly what was going on with you. I know that happens. I know that in God that there are many ways that people can know the savior. And sometimes it's direct and sometimes indirect. That's my opinion. That's my opinion. I know this can be discussed how many levels by different many people. I'm just giving you my opinion. Well, I find nothing to argue about with that, and it's sure a pleasure to hear you today. "Are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Welcome back to our program. We are continuing with your phone calls at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 mic is up next. And Houston, hello, Mike. Hey, Paul. You know, a lot of folks are putting this narrative out there that the sky is falling at Clemson because davo has a bit of an old school view about how things should be conducted. And the reality is that the loyalty that he displays for his players. I mean, think about the phrase that he's used, not transfer portal is my locker room. Well, they're all going after these four and 5 star players to come in and play for them. And what does each form 5 star player want? They want play in time. Most of them know that they're never guaranteed playing time. They've got to come in and develop and earn that spot. Well, with dabo, you're going to have that opportunity to develop and earn that spot on the field and not get replaced via the transfer portal overnight by another athlete. I mean, imagine you're Trey Sanders at Alabama or one of these other guys that's been putting in a year or two or three in that program thinking this is going to be my year, never mind. We're going to bring in the ACC's leading rusher and now I've got to compete with this guy who's got four years, three, four years of experience on a division one shield. That's a tremendous amount of security for a high school kid who's trying to pick a program to go to and spend his time putting in that the blood sweat and tears that these guys put in. Yeah, that's really a fair point. Hey, thank you very, very much. I really appreciate that. Doctor Mel is up next. Hey, Paul, how are you today? We are doing great. Thank you. All right, yeah. I just want to thank you for the job. You and Mark and the rest of the guys doing it needs to be some kind of way, I don't know a lot about journalism where we can evoke for you to receive some kind of war as the young lady from hospital of Luther King on the earth today. The chance of me being honored by anyone is very low, but I have done something rather extraordinary throughout my career, I've managed to avoid being honored at almost every turn. Well, but you know, there comes a time, but the program is really enjoyable. My audience is saying what you just said means more to all of us here than some organization saying, giving us an award. So our obligation is to the people that listen and watch this show, not to some organization where you got a bunch of starchy, stodgy, old, bitter people who decide who gets the awards and who doesn't. Does that sound absolutely sounding Randy? Bitter at all. But let me assure you. What's the word? I'm being completely honest here. If asked, I would not accept. Yes. I have one proposal for you. As you know, Richard and both had other careers alone with his law practice and my medicine. So this is what I want to propose, Richard and I being from the sports council, we want to represent you in your new NIL. And we guarantee you. I guarantee you, we'll never give you a reason to want to enter into a transport portal, we will treat you right lambda would be well. And do you make our dough? Do you remember when Richard was a sports agent? Yes, sir, I do. Yes, sir, I do. I covered his first client and it was a big one too. I bet Richard, it's almost 40 years ago, Richard probably doesn't even remember it. He has a future hanging in his office. But that was one of my reasons, Paul for taking the law sabbatical from the healthcare for you was the ten law school where mid Richard and course I was a sports counselor for about 15 years and I didn't call myself an age and I was a counselor in my main motivation was to help the young people develop a career in teach them right from wrong and how to live a live of good morality on and off the field. You know what's funny, I remember and I'm not going to mention his name because he's dead. But I got to be friendly with a guy about 25, 30 years ago, who was the most among the two or three most notorious scumbags who ever was a sports agent. I think he went to jail. And I met him. After he had come out of federal prison and of course he had become a minister by then. My goodness. I think he's probably the only person that's ever done that before. But it was really interesting to hear his perspective on what led him down that path. My goodness, my goodness. Well, Paul, what do you think the NIL is going to end point do you think we'll see some kind of change or rules of regulation? I think it's fine for the players, but the institutions that seem to be such a war zone and then so much.

"About this, Paul journalism used to be about playing a chess game with the head coach. Or the players to get information out of them that they didn't want to share and then telling the world about that player, that team that coach's journey. Journalism is no longer about that. Journalism is about answering the questions that are created on social media by people who claim to be journalists but have no journalism skills whatsoever. I'm glad I don't have to live in that world. I, you know, I don't, I got to understand social media so I can help my children and my players because it's not going away and it's got to be it's part of their life. But I do not read social media to get myself locked in as to the good or the bad. I've got one person I need to speak with about my job and that's ray Tanner. And as long as ray Tanner and I are in a good place and we've been for ten years where we tell each other the truth, that's all I care about. Yeah, and I'm not to turn this into a lecture, but what you're talking about, you know, I'm old school, of course. It's not journalism. No. Journalism, at least, has a modicum of respectability. What you're talking about is just ironic. If I can interject. Paul finebaum, as a journalist, spends time with Frank and his team and he sees the good, the bad and the indifferent. Then he asked a difficult question because he seemed the journey of the team. That's journalism. When a guy shows up to a press conference and he asks a question because there's ten guys on social media commenting and he feels that he's got to ask a hard question because it appeases the social media interest. That's not journalism. And that's why I'm happy I'm not in journalism in today's day and age. Let's end the basketball court because that's what you've done well. So in your career and you've had a good year, you don't want nobody wants it to end at this point. What's left for this South Carolina team? I think we're a good team. I mean, I think the season either teaches you to win or teaches you to lose. And the way you handle all the adversity that comes at you through during the year determines who you become. This team believed in itself and during the difficult moments where we lost some games. They never.

"And go they wait. I'm a business owner and I'm a vet. I didn't go to college because I didn't choose to go to college, like the guy called in to see I had the same opportunity as the hebe. Yes, you are correct. I didn't have the same opportunity as you hear. But I choose to join the military and not go to college. I'm the only kid who you are. It's not everybody. And the other guy said, sound like I'm trying to play a race card. I might have been raised around people. That was racist. And probably a steel did in me. Parliament explained some to you. I will raise by my great grandparents on a peak storm in military. My great grandparents worked for the people that own the form. My great grandfather, they had all the animals. And this is also going back to sea. My great grandmother cleaned their house and cooked with them every meal. I have an income tax return that my mother had for my great grandmother. My great grandmother made a $120 a year to clean these people house and to cook for now. Notice how to say a week. She made a $120 for a year. I didn't call in. Seeking in a sympathy to play a race car, anything. I was calling you to tell you my life experiences, and this is where I clearly stated. This is coming from me. Not nobody else. So I know some people are going to say I'm trying to do this. I'm trying to do that. No, I'm not. I'm just clear this thing, things. I went through in my life. And the guy that called in and said, he hoped. He hoped that it's not affecting my life now. It's not. I love my life. I do more than every person do. I go more than a person go. I'm very happy. So my past experiences with our experience at all. If it would have affected me, I don't know where I would be today because sometimes you get sometimes you gotta be like a dope, you gotta listen to the rule of debate. You don't stop you from moving forward. So once again, we're about to listen. Listen twice more than you speak. I'm not seeking any kind of sympathy. I'm not playing the race card, and I wasn't raised to be racist or by interracial in my family. My great grandparents my great grandparents were sharecroppers. They weren't put a guy that on the phone. They was paid penny. And the one thing that they told me was, if I don't work hard for anything, I'm not going to get in this. So none of my experiences fall. The fact that my life today, I have a great life. Charles, I appreciate you calling back and clarifying that. Yeah. And I just wonder if someone knows that they own a change that kind of space, even though a solid player was getting a big money and gas it on the front lines every day, this provided him the ability to make that money, it shouldn't be somewhere tame, not equally, but maybe I'm with you a 100% except for this reason the NIL is designed for individuals. It's how it's how they're getting away with it, that it's an individual can make money off of his name image and likeness. If you make it a team event, it's going to be disqualified. "If you saw the game on saturday night between missouri and kentucky. You saw a lot of chris broderick against junior monster game. The co offensive player of the week in the sec and he joins us now from lexington. First of all chris congratulations. I know you're team. You wanna move ahead but man what a what a performance it was fun it a good one. Let's let's go back in and that was a huge game. Everyone knew how important it was for the cats to beat missouri Take us through the week of preparation. We head coach on thursday night. And it i'd say you guys were ready to play that that would be the understatement of the year sir so throughout the we just knew that we had abba chip on our shoulders because last year you know we felt we were prepared but our energy just wasn't there so we felt like we all wanna coaches told us like. Are you going to let them out play you. Are you going to let them out. Execute you and we knew we couldn't let that happen again so we went in with the mindset that we had to go in this game of wanna ask you about that because fans like like the folks that i talked to her every day we get. We get hung up on what happened last year and and and wonder often whether it carries over but coach stage said the exact same thing i mean. How do you eighty psychological here transfer. How do you transfer that bad feeling into you does it. Does it affect the way you practice. Prepare because you're you're supposed to be dealing with the techniques of it. I mean motion is part of football. But i'm really curious how that affects you as a player so one We had a video from last year where they showed beauvoir sidelines. I think kelvin. Joseph have made a good tap on the sideline and then they were getting Hype and they showed are sidelined. Dolphins was obvious on the bench or whatever and we were just sitting. There are cheering or nothing. You know he showed us that video in it. Obviously practice a lot harder throughout the week.

A lot of people think for a playoff spot this year because the schedule and then. Ucs tonight pot. You know gus malzahn. Well i spoke with him yesterday. As part of our coaches call. And it's no secret. Malzahn took this job because he was one a good fit for him but to hey knows that. Ucf is on the verge getting out of that group of five corridor and getting into power. Five football dan stand that the the winds are change. You're going to happen every year. We talked playoff expansion to twelve teams which would benefit. Ucf gus malzahn cincinnati. Luke fickle until. I'm not surprised in the least bit that. Ucf is coveted spot wide. Because it's the state of florida smack down to the central their orlando. There's a lot of talent this team who's is gonna feel tonight has a ton of talent. And so look it's it makes sense if you're in the big twelve and you just lost taxes and you just lost oklahoma. We're going to sit here and say that you're going to replace those brands with cincinnati. And i wanna get obviously to your campus in a minute. We talked to greg sankey earlier and you know so much conversation around the country today in relation to what happened yesterday. And i ask you because you spent a lot of time in the pac twelve early in your career and obviously as the athletic director at arizona. Could you give us your view of what we all watched yesterday with. the three commissioners form forming the alliance. Yeah listen i understand that. Collaboration is important. Part of anything that you do to have the healthiest environment that you can have and you know so. I understand where the conference is to try to work together Sec's always been good about that. And and so. When when i was watching that i understand the purpose of it and the thought of it at the same time to You know schools moving from one conference to another has happened in the. Sec's happening the acc. Big twelve the pac twelve and the big ten and so this is not i think i mentioned a pat forty yesterday when he called me about it. I said it's not a new phenomenon. That's taking place. This is something that is reality. Schools are going to look after their their own interests and because of making sure that they can do the right thing for their student athletes and their program and their university for the law all and their fans as well And you know i did. I did think that. Hey it's it's probably okay to talk a little bit about what we're doing

Called what i was talking about the nfl and all the i'll think of the big time boosters over the years seventy four years old beg your college is always put money to what is going to stop in now and then legal by put money into into the school but with there companies. Endorse that young player to urge him in a waco out water. They may call it to go through the major almost. Yeah i yeah. Thanks joe i i don't i don't know i mean i think you know it's one thing to be in favor of this. It's another thing to be concerned about some of the unintended consequences. But i'm not sure there's much you can do and and i think most people will be reasonable but you you don't know what kind of shifty characters you're going to have here and that that i think that has to be a concern where you get some shady businessmen and you know. He gets his hooks into some player. The worst thing that happens is it gets them to go to a school. That that i could probably live with that. But that's not my biggest concern. Hey thank you very much for the call. Let's continue and check in with ben. I'm sorry let me go to fuller. Who is up next. Hey full or go right ahead paul..

It's not like this new thing coming down the road and seems like they've already telling messed us up so I i'm concerned about violations. I know i know school. Alabama you of that stuff you have these other universities out there that have already shown they don't know how to they you know they're terrible with appliances like lsu. So i'm just concerned of what you think about that. And how i think that is probably if players make money. That's great i mean. I'm probably not Celebrating lake You know the the day. Like joe. That's my biggest concern. I mean you know especially for the first couple of years it goes on. It's gonna be really hard to tell you know how it's going and i'm just afraid some people who can get in trouble. You know maybe some honest kids. Just don't do the right thing because they don't pay their taxes for. But i feel like they're probably going to get in trouble You know or something like that. "Was the athletic director at vanderbilt candice story lee when she issued a public statement which we shared with you earlier which brought this to light for. The first time. Clinton had tweeted something. But there's a big difference between a reporter tweeting something in the athletic director of the university in question making a public statement so i. I don't know the answer to this. But i'm assuming is not a very very good thing. I have spoken to john cone of mississippi state and the statement that kansas issued is this. I am deeply troubled that some of our student athlete. Parents were subjected to racist slurs. During last night's game this is. This is absolutely unacceptable and disgraceful behavior and such hateful. Language has no place anywhere in our society to the family members who were impacted. Please know that you have my full support. So i was taught as a young journalist never to to make assumptions. Let me finish with john cone statement. We joined vanderbilt in declaring such behaviour unacceptable and indirect conflict with evaluating both institutions and our fan base. The college world series serves as a celebration of the entire sport of college. Baseball highly inappropriate advancements must neither be tolerated allowed to detract from the on the field accomplishments of the student athletes and their teams who have earned the right to participate on this national stage.

"Recruiting pool. That are willing to play for notre dame. It'd be good as long as brian. Kelly there that they could be in the playoff most years so they basically are saying. We're giving up the chance at that by every few years to get in. Let's say five years we get a by but now we're going to get in three or five years I think that's a deal. They're willing to make. And i think they look at the home gate of that. First round a good thing. It's a huge money maker and You know if you know. I think the home dates will be. Thanks so i don't think notre dame really got swindled on. That's what they had to give up yet this. I thought that was a pretty decent. The alfie notre dame's giant Conference anytime stoop dan. What's from yahoo. Dan hancock earlier. Today on the show said this. The championship games are going to be more consequential. And that's one that a lot of people are scratching their heads. Because if you have to top four teams playing for the big ten or the sec. Or whatever yes. The winner gets an advantage but the losers still getting in the playoffs. So can you addressed app part. I know you heard that yesterday. Yeah i i've been saying for years that they should They should go. They should eliminate the conference championships altogether. they should eliminate divisions that she'd go back. They're just running conferences. And have your cat and you're gonna have a twelve team playoff. Find a way to determine who. Your champion is without playing a conference championship game. Conference games are ridiculous in a competitive sense because they're basically geography based So if you're in a certain part of your you know you're in the sec. West and the ester c. e. is loaded or vice versa usually You get the big ten west. You just get seated in. It makes no sense. 'cause they always are talking about well. Every game must matter and everything must be competition and then they create these incredibly on justified ways to set up a copper shipment based on geography which has just. There's no point you know no points for geography of football game. So i would get rid of these things altogether now understandably people make money off it. They're gonna get rid of I don't think more consequential. I think don't continue to have problems. But if you really look at convert ship.

How Covid Will Affect Sports This Fall

"One of the things that's on everybody's mind is the travel outlook for this fall. And really what we're talking about. We could be facing as soon as the olympics but all the way in to the fall football season so we're going to get a little expertise on that in the in the form of matt trout. Who joins us from. Sports travel magazine. You could check out a great article. He's got out there on sports magazine dot com talking about the latest sports at cove. Nineteen and really what everybody's trying to do. When it comes to opening stadiums to full capacity and matt. This is an interesting conversation and appreciate your joining the show. Sarah and i on. Spain and fitz have talked a lot about the olympics and some of the challenges. They're facing now is even japan. They're they're not sure that the olympics are safe so as you look at what every single league is trying to do to put forth the effort to put fans in stands. How confident are you at this. Point that we're gonna face what feels like a normal fall. I'm fairly confident. I think An thanks jason. Of course obviously for beyond. But i am fairly confident that we're going to be seen full stadiums In college football pro football all the pro spa sports by the fall. Especially you know you look at major league baseball. And and opening day Obviously the attention on texas rangers having a capacity crowd but everybody did have some restricted level of capacity. And you look at it now. And there's gonna be i think it's close to twenty teams by the fourth of july. That will be having their standing there. Stadium open at one hundred percent capacity. And i think when you go into the fall of the olympics obviously is a totally different animal because of the situation in japan. But i really believe that in this in college football season whether you're watching an sec. Game or pat close game or a group of five game that you're going to be seeing Stands that there might be one or two sections that are socially distanced but for the most part. I think you're gonna see everybody back to what it was. Almost in in in many ways a pre pandemic. Oh set up
