Chris Rodriguez Jr. Named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week

"If you saw the game on saturday night between missouri and kentucky. You saw a lot of chris broderick against junior monster game. The co offensive player of the week in the sec and he joins us now from lexington. First of all chris congratulations. I know you're team. You wanna move ahead but man what a what a performance it was fun it a good one. Let's let's go back in and that was a huge game. Everyone knew how important it was for the cats to beat missouri Take us through the week of preparation. We head coach on thursday night. And it i'd say you guys were ready to play that that would be the understatement of the year sir so throughout the we just knew that we had abba chip on our shoulders because last year you know we felt we were prepared but our energy just wasn't there so we felt like we all wanna coaches told us like. Are you going to let them out play you. Are you going to let them out. Execute you and we knew we couldn't let that happen again so we went in with the mindset that we had to go in this game of wanna ask you about that because fans like like the folks that i talked to her every day we get. We get hung up on what happened last year and and and wonder often whether it carries over but coach stage said the exact same thing i mean. How do you eighty psychological here transfer. How do you transfer that bad feeling into you does it. Does it affect the way you practice. Prepare because you're you're supposed to be dealing with the techniques of it. I mean motion is part of football. But i'm really curious how that affects you as a player so one We had a video from last year where they showed beauvoir sidelines. I think kelvin. Joseph have made a good tap on the sideline and then they were getting Hype and they showed are sidelined. Dolphins was obvious on the bench or whatever and we were just sitting. There are cheering or nothing. You know he showed us that video in it. Obviously practice a lot harder throughout the week.

"Comb to literally when the biggest entertainers world joins us now. Luke thank you for for making time a great to have you on the program. I i was going to ask how you how you are. But i i mean i would think you're doing pretty well based on everything i've read about you the last couple of years. Good afternoon all. Thanks for having me man. It's been been a good couple years for sure. Yeah before we get to the song. I hear you are guy that went to appalachian state you grew up in north carolina. And you followed your dream and to say you struck. Gold would be an understatement. And i know it's a great question to have to answer which is like to to be where you are with some of the biggest hits in recent national history. But how do you compartmentalize it. How does it. How do you process it. I don't know if i ever do. You know. I just tried to take it day by day and and you know be thankful as i can and try to give back as much as humanly possible you know. I didn't play guitar until ten years ago. I'm thirty one years old now. I was about a junior at appalachian state going into my senior year. When i picked the guitar up and had been singing. My whole life and just Man i got real lucky I got real real lucky man that that people liked what i was doing and Once i figured out what it was that i wanted to do man it was just. It was tunnel vision from there on out man. So i'm just super super super grateful and and just enjoying every minute of it you've had so many great moments in you know you hit two number ones and all times of awards What was the moment that you just excellent and man this. This is really getting to be pretty crazy. Yeah i think it was. You know obviously your first number one is is a huge deal bessant they say the hardest one get the second one you know And after that second one happened. You know When it rains it pours was a huge song for me. I think it changed the game for me a lot of ways

BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Houston Considered Top Candidates for Big 12 Expansion

"A report out this afternoon at Ucf could be headed to the big twelve. I know you're there to do the game. Let that potentially could really have a lot of the effects especially with texas and oklahoma. What what do you make out of that report. That has ucf byu let me. I'm trying to remember. Who else is in that. Cincinnati and houston in that. Yeah lucky me. You just rattled off one powerful independent byu a couple of group of five schools cincinnati. A lot of people think for a playoff spot this year because the schedule and then. Ucs tonight pot. You know gus malzahn. Well i spoke with him yesterday. As part of our coaches call. And it's no secret. Malzahn took this job because he was one a good fit for him but to hey knows that. Ucf is on the verge getting out of that group of five corridor and getting into power. Five football dan stand that the the winds are change. You're going to happen every year. We talked playoff expansion to twelve teams which would benefit. Ucf gus malzahn cincinnati. Luke fickle until. I'm not surprised in the least bit that. Ucf is coveted spot wide. Because it's the state of florida smack down to the central their orlando. There's a lot of talent this team who's is gonna feel tonight has a ton of talent. And so look it's it makes sense if you're in the big twelve and you just lost taxes and you just lost oklahoma. We're going to sit here and say that you're going to replace those brands with cincinnati. Ucf byu in houston but you do get a couple of teams that together can stop that bleeding just enough to still compete and steal it. Pretty competitive conference

There's just a another new item to put on your list and try to manage and You know so. There's i can tell you there's never boring day right now paul but You know but what takes place in college. Part of anything that you do to have the healthiest environment that you can have and you know so. I understand where the conference is to try to work together Sec's always been good about that. And and so. When when i was watching that i understand the purpose of it and the thought of it at the same time to You know schools moving from one conference to another has happened in the. "Was the athletic director at vanderbilt candice story lee when she issued a public statement which we shared with you earlier which brought this to light for. The first time. Clinton had tweeted something. But there's a big difference between a reporter tweeting something in the athletic director of the university in question making a public statement so i. I don't know the answer to this. But i'm assuming is not a very very good thing. I have spoken to john cone of mississippi state and the statement that kansas issued is this. I am deeply troubled that some of our student athlete. Parents were subjected to racist slurs. During last night's game this is. This is absolutely unacceptable and disgraceful behavior and such hateful. Language has no place anywhere in our society to the family members who were impacted. Please know that you have my full support. So i was taught as a young journalist never to to make assumptions. Let me finish with john cone statement. We joined vanderbilt in declaring such behaviour unacceptable and indirect conflict with evaluating both institutions and our fan base. How Covid Will Affect Sports This Fall

"One of the things that's on everybody's mind is the travel outlook for this fall. And really what we're talking about. We could be facing as soon as the olympics but all the way in to the fall football season so we're going to get a little expertise on that in the in the form of matt trout. Who joins us from. Sports travel magazine. You could check out a great article. He's got out there on sports magazine dot com talking about the latest sports at cove. Nineteen and really what everybody's trying to do. When it comes to opening stadiums to full capacity and matt. This is an interesting conversation and appreciate your joining the show. Sarah and i on. Spain and fitz have talked a lot about the olympics and some of the challenges. They're facing now is even japan. They're they're not sure that the olympics are safe so as you look at what every single league is trying to do to put forth the effort to put fans in stands. How confident are you at this. Point that we're gonna face what feels like a normal fall. I'm fairly confident. I think An thanks jason. Of course obviously for beyond. But i am fairly confident that we're going to be seen full stadiums In college football pro football all the pro spa sports by the fall. Especially you know you look at major league baseball. And and opening day Obviously the attention on texas rangers having a capacity crowd but everybody did have some restricted level of capacity. And you look at it now. And there's gonna be i think it's close to twenty teams by the fourth of july. That will be having their standing there. Stadium open at one hundred percent capacity. And i think when you go into the fall of the olympics obviously is a totally different animal because of the situation in japan. But i really believe that in this in college football season whether you're watching an sec. Game or pat close game or a group of five game that you're going to be seeing Stands that there might be one or two sections that are socially distanced but for the most part. I think you're gonna see everybody back to what it was. Almost in in in many ways a pre pandemic. Oh set up

I haven't called in a while, but I wanted to just get a couple of two cents in on your poll here for the really good. Tweeter. By the way. Yeah. Yeah. It's I haven't had time much to do much of it, but I have to say within a show almost every day for five years, the best caller without question to turn the radio on is to Jerome from Birmingham. He's good. I mean he just brings brings it every time he calls and the worst caller, I have to kind of say, like everybody else does just because he brags about himself is, is the guy Jim from Tuscaloosa. I mean that guy I don't know. Wait takes his meds. You could kind of tell when he's on the meds. He's okay with the call. And then there are other days, he didn't take the meds and, you know, he can hate on any money money right about everything off his game. You do not like him. I mean, I would put him Bianchi. "The Paul finebaum show podcast. We've been hearing the rhetoric coming from the sunshine state now what about the dogs Seth Emerson has covered Georgia for quite a while. Seth thank you, very very much. I hope you haven't been listening to the show because that means you are subjected to Mike Bianchi, good afternoon. I hope I will. Oh, how do I how do I answer comment on that one? I think I'll leave that alone. Paul. What would I do want to know is the comparisons between Kirby, smart and Mark richt? And and what do they really mean? Yeah. You know this. I think started to occur to people late last season. And then it especially came out after Georgia lost a Texas as kind of this counter to the narrative of Kirby smart building. This powerhouse national championship is is inevitable. Where people rightly pointed out hold on the first three years of Mark richt. And Kirby smart are like eerily similar like down to the records. They won eight in the first year thirteen in the second year eleven in the third year, both of them main differences Kirby was that close to winning national championship the counter to that is that Kirby's or Mark richt did not have any fourteen playoff his second year. So who knows if he gets in there that year? So I built into that. I said all right. These teams were very similar the first three years where are they comparatively? In year four. There was also a lot of into for Mark Rix fourth year at George. I know I was around for that. But you talk to people in just kind of comparing with my own eyes in my own field. But I did talk to David Pollock one of your colleagues there at SEC network in ESPN. I talked Lawrence Smith longtime UGA historian, and there's just a sense that they are a bunch of things that are different now. And that while there I three years kinda throws up the cautionary note about Kirby smart that they are a lot of things in place right now. A lot of them do things that curb smarts doing that make people think this will really be different. It is he is going to be able to do Mark richt. Couldn't quite do. Shit. It'd be before we get to deep. Can we clear something up because Bianchi Fain shock when talking about Mark Ricks dismissal Georgia, but it wasn't surprising. He he had run run. His course, and it was a tough decision. I don't think it was easy. Having won nine games. People always talk about ten win season. But he was fired believe after the ninth win, right? And what went into that decision? I mean, it wasn't a close. Call. I don't think it was if you go back to that two thousand fifteen season the decision was made for sure after they lost a Florida. If you remember they won their last four games to go to nine and three and people were wondering after they beat Georgia Tech to finish nine and three one four in a row as Margaret saved his job. He would quickly like go the next morning. So it was obvious that the powerbrokers kinda made the decision after the Florida game. And then in the lead up to that they that terrible month of October in two thousand fifteen started with that loss to Alabama where both teams run beaten or actually may have had one loss that point. I'm not sure. But there was a sense that Georgia had Alabama home Georgia this year, and then Alabama came in here and waxed them and that started at the floor game kind of finished it. Yeah there. There was a sense that things had just run. Its course that. I think the other thing was curvy smart was very much in the mix for the South Carolina job after Steve Spurrier stepped down and a lot of people around here did not want to let their guy Kirby..

I talked to coach wheel must jam when I was there. And he got it really involved in design of that issue hit his big thing was he wanted players to flow from one room to another room to another room, and they estimated in South Carolina with the way that thing is set up players save something like fifteen or twenty minutes a day and that adds up over time. It was a really a fascinating thing to watch. And look these facilities just about everybody's got one of them. Now, it's one stop shopping for academics. Weightlifting nutrition everything is under one roof and South Carolina. They were spread out all over the place. And now they've they've got a fifty million dollar facility that attached to their already very nice. "To the Paul finebaum show podcast male. Herald is up next in Lexington herald, welcome to the show. Good afternoon. Already. Paul. We were doing great. Thank you. Okay. My my thing is I like to get your comments on the game Saturday. I am a great UK fan for first and foremost, but this year's team gave me some some scares the beginning with the Alabama loss and everything and in the sea and other your alma mater. They're giving me some some reservations as well to to this team. So I hope we win of love to see us win. But just want to get your thoughts. Yeah. Listen, I think this game is entirely on Tennessee. I think Kentucky is played. So well lately that if they lose it's it's it's it's a disappointment. But they have a chance to see Tennessee again. And and they very likely will. So for Tennessee. I think it's all about momentum. And. And the psychological movement forward. And I think we heard from John Adams earlier that there's not there isn't negatively. But there's just uncertainty a little bit from team that was steam rolling down the track. So that's where I think this game is I think Tennessee, I still have a may of my mind yet because I was so sold on Tennessee two weeks ago going nuts. Not in not in the game at Lexington. I didn't think they'd win there. But I thought they would they would lose that and come back and win now. Now, I'm starting to to waiver. So I'm not concerned about Kentucky, though, is what I'm trying to tell you. Let's see. I'm just the opposite of you on your family. I'm not all with the consecutive. You know, I was scared that they would they would lose here in Lexington. And also losing a Knoxville. So, you know, I'm just I'm glad we won. But this game scares me. This game really does scare. Let's it should. I mean, you're playing you're playing in Knoxville against a team that's been number one the majority of the season. But all I'm saying is it's it's a great event. Can't wait to watch it. But it's not going to determine a dictate Kentucky season. It could help define Tennessee's though is my my ultimate point. Preston is up next in Tuscaloosa press in go right ahead. All I. Stone anything, but Johnny. Why yet if that abandoned it football? I don't and I'll tell you what. It you'd have to think it's some violation of a policy which could lead to anything when you when you factor in all the all the clauses in Johnny's contract about what he what he couldn't do the testing..

Do you celebrate that you go to the library and read about your favorite president it celebrated today by ordering a copy of on China's who wrote Hamilton the job. Biography. He's hitting Ulysses grant. And so copies today. I did read nothing it. This'll be a read some articles about the greatest presidential. No. Books, and it's it's quite a fascinating book. And sure no was on there, certainly. And and if you can make US grant Ulysses grant to be a fast, which he did good luck. Well, I look forward to reading it. Hamilton was an S damning. But outstanding book. Yeah. That's my pal Hamilton. Many many biographies of Lincoln. Yeah. But but that's a little bit more. You know, in some ways certainly had his flaws, but in an interesting character, I think his name's Robert Caro who's written like nineteen books on Lyndon Johnson. If you can if you have more than one book on Lyndon Johnson. I give you a lot of credit. He's written a three part series. Well it. Yeah. That the sixties or such a and and certainly, Linda. Yeah. Active in the Senate long before that it's just such a rich period. History could be mind now, see so this how many I know many have done books about Nick Sabin. You think you think they'll do like like five parts historical perspective? And if they were writing about Nick Sabin. What would they writing about right now? I think that they'd be probably about a coach in transition. I I don't think that they would be questioning his stature among coaches, but the the test of all great coaches like right or or John wooden or any Bill Belichick and of all great president are or how they handled the crisis. They face whether it's winkle or FDR Harry Truman how they handle as versus. And so in some ways do his own doing it can face that much versity certainly the perception after leaving to Clemson the way they did that this is. Either an adverse situation or transitional situation. So I think people would be watching the twenty nineteen these and very close. Yeah. Yeah. That's a really interesting analysis because you know, he's had a couple of. I think I wouldn't I wouldn't try to replicate. Nixon six crisis is here. But certainly after the kick six game, we saw energize Nick Sabin bring in lane kiffin. He was able to get the title get get to the playoffs get to the title the next year. And since then I mean, losing the Clemson two years three years ago or two years ago? Whatever it was that didn't really seem like a big deal because he got it back next year. But it it does seem like there are closer is or more care or more careful is on him now. And I want to get your thoughts on the coaching turnover. Because it's it's almost a complete wipeout from three years ago is it not. It is for three years ago. Let's she's unless you count it that south in theory was on staff came back, but yes, it's completely turned over from from three years ago. And from last season two things are fascinating to me. But the main thing is that he's gone from from younger coaches, maybe coaches that were that's known for being energetic on the recruiting trail to to really lean heavily on experience. I don't know exactly. The the reason for that. I can can surmise some of it is that maybe and I don't speak for Nick..

And I wanted to get your perspective on something just to see what you think. Now, do you think with Molin being now, let me preface this by saying I always thought that whenever Maya left? I thought eighty Foley should opened up the checkbook to Bobby stoops. But that never came to fruition. I never understood the bus champ hiring. I never understood the mcelwain hiring the Natta mullah's dare. And he understands the pulse in the vibe of Florida. Do you think with the next to recruiting classes he gets in there and get his own personnel and their player wise that balance of power will tilt more toward four other than Georgia to challenge Alabama from the east? Ryan, I think Dan Mullen will enhance an increase Florida's role and position. But to me, I think it's a tall order right now to overcome Georgia from a recruiting base. I mean, Jordan in the last three years has recruited almost equal to Alabama. If you if you average it out and Florida's nowhere near that. Right now. Okay. Yeah. 'cause I just always, you know, it's been a long ten years, you know, since the urban Meyer heydays, and I I always thought maybe. But, but I I mean, I don't think from a recruiting standpoint, the two schools are really that close at the moment. Okay. Do you think that maybe Molin can tap into southern Florida to take away players from the Miami area or tapping? Listen, I Oregon, but but I think I think it is a challenge because I need to see how this recruiting class ends, right? They are doing well. But they're coming from way back in the pack. Listen, I it doesn't you can change it. You can change your position pretty quickly with with a dynamic quarterback or or certain other positions. And I think he he is he is certainly increasing Florida's position. But I think two three yourself Florida could be at that at that level. But but but I in less something goes haywire in Georgia. So I require that lose my patience with all this speculation before anything happens. I'm a Georgia BULLDOGS fan, and I just won't your opinion. All the guys thinking, Georgia's go reload and be as good a better than they've been in the last couple of years, I've been looking at their personnel lost both the seniors graduating b juniors leaving class baked cat for the pros applying for of the pro draft and the transfers I played football Pascual junior college.
