"Conversation continues at LARs Larson dot com. Welcome back to the LARs Larson show. It's a pleasure to be with y'all get to calls and emails a bit later. Daniel j Flynn is my guest, he is the author most recently of cult city, although I recommend his other books, and he writes, great column. He's join me to talk about Jim Jones of Guyana, not fame, but infamy Harvey milk who was murdered in San Francisco city. Supervisor man, of course, the the intersection between these two men I want you to talk a bit about the media. And what you think has happened to this story, and then we'll talk about Harvey milk. If you don't mind because the book goes into all of this, the background is San Francisco following the summer of love, and the fact that these two men were political allies, although as you point out in in historical reviews, when people mention Harvey milk when they name things after him today because of his status in the gay community and his his murder in San Francisco. They. Virtually never I I tried doing a search to find mentions where Jim Jones and Harvey milk tournament the same stories and other than your book. It simply doesn't happen for the most part. Yeah. We'll they certainly were were more than just acquaintances. They were friends, and you get that from the many letters that milk wrote to Jim Jones, you get that from his appearances at people's temple where he spoke from the pulpit, you get it from looking at the people's temple newspaper where their name checking milk and saying how great he was and also for milk newspaper column where he's he's singing the praises of Jim Jones. And so this was beneficial to Harvey milk because he says he's like a gay house gas, and he's sort of running for office every year in San Francisco, and it's really not until it links up with Jim Jones, and he has any success, and he wins election to the board of supervisors does is because he gets thousands of volunteers hundreds of volunteers from Jimmy Johns, thousands of leaflets on milk's behalf. He gets a printing press and Jim Jones, he gets all sorts of benefits from Jim Jones. But really in this kind of transactional relationship. Jim Jones got the better end of the deal because when things. Went south for Jim Johnson. San Francisco Harvey milk and Willie Brown and a few other people really came to to Jones's aid. Jane Fonda, would certainly be one of the people that came to a call Avery who is played by Robert Downey junior in the movie zodiac local newspaper, man, he came to his aid hurricane Harvey milk was one of the main people that did not have been Jim Johnson was promoting him until the very end. And at least credit words, do Daniel Flynn. I'm talking Daniel Flinders street written called city there were at least some journalists who tried to sound the alarm about Jones. What happened? So Ken solving who recently died he he wrote a series for the San Francisco Examiner and the early seventies. Basically, outlining all the things we know about Jim Jones now but doing it about five or six years before Guyana and saying that there were saints. That he had you know, that there was a four year old kid who didn't want to eat food on a on a temple outing Jones forced him to eat the food and then the kid vomited he forced into his own throw up vomiting again kept going on. And and you know, you get the picture what kind of a man forces a four year old to it plummet was violence that they were taking advantage of people financially that there were all these fake claims that they had risen from the dead at the time the temple and numerous people intimidated examiner, and they told half of the series and shortly thereafter, Lester, consulting was basically run out of San Francisco and nothing came of the series as far as again temples reputation got instead the guy who wrote the series was marked in the media by a m Rosenthal from from the. From the New York Times by by by. Paul Avery from the from local San Francisco press, you know, various people were were mocking this guy. And he he got out of the city. Where's Jim Jones is essentially giving the Keita's city Hugh years later, he's he made the chairman of the housing authority in the city. They give him the Martin Luther King junior humanitarian award in San Francisco. There's a paper in Los Angeles at names the man of the year. And so Jim Jones becomes a big shot. San Francisco in the guy that exposed him gets run out of town. And by the way, even after he'd left town, you know, with all these people taking them off to Guyana, and even when things were really on the verge of going south in Guyana to the point where congressman Leo Ryan who who was murdered there in Guyana that when when he went down to investigate there were clearly concerns and yet you site. There was. Fundraiser plan never held that was supposed to happen. Just about the same time that the the peoples temple ended up with all these people committing suicide effectively the murder of all these people by Jim Jones, tell me about that. Well, there was a scheduled for the highest ballroom in San Francisco on the first week of December. This is two weeks after Jones out, and you have you know, on on the mass. You have Harvey milk in Willie Brown and all of the local big wigs. We're going to be there. Dick, Gregory, the comedian was going to be masters of ceremony master ceremony. And I think the big kicker is that this was to benefit people's temple medical program. And that of course, the group of people who engineered the deaths of over nine hundred people by Sinai, and so all of these, you know, famous people celebrities in in San Francisco, they were essentially going to be gathering to raise money for the same group that that, you know, murdered over nine hundred people there's something very sick about that. I think it was something very sick at the time because Jim Johns was sort of mouthing Marxist platitudes because he was supporting all the right causes. Gay rights. Law which was forcing the women in the temple to get abortion that they were so committed the idea of abortion, the because they were for all these liberal causes. You had someone like Jane Fonda, for instance, coming out writing Jim Jones a letter saying that you wanted to be full and active participant and people's temple. And that you wanted to do so for the sake of her two kids, and then when things get bad for for Jim Jones, Jane Fonda joins up with Harvey milk, put out a public letter along with a number of other people saying what a great guy Jim Jones was the thing that gets me. There's you know, there's been no real reckoning here for all these people that vouched for a mass murderer and in the case of milk where he's writing the president of the United States Carter after Jim Jones had kidnapped the kid from San Francisco, and in slamming the kids parents calling the kids momma blackmailer and the father a liar insane. Jim jones. Man of the highest character while the parents are back in the United States and the little kid is kidnapped with John's the jungle Jimmy Carter doesn't intervene that little boy dies. And so you just the fact that you had Harvey Milton all these other people saying what a great guy Jim Jones was it had consequences it had life and death consequences, and there's been no rocketing. There's been no attempt to make sense of all this. I'm talking to the great columnist. Daniel Flynn, who's written a book called city. That is a must read them in the middle of it myself right now, and I guess the the bottom line to all of that. Do you think the Jim Jones could have gotten away with what he did if he hadn't had the political cover from all of these Democrats who loved the fact that he back their policies would he have been able to get away with this to the extent that he did. No mean, he would have been thrown in jail years earlier. Let me give you one example of what I'm talking about in nineteen seventy-five, George miscounted was made. So just for context seventy five three years before the people's temple suicide. Correct that Jones buses in people from out of the city to vote for Mosconi, the ES styles of on tears from Estonia inside the city and most people credit Jones with getting Mosconi elected. Now after he's elected. There's so much pressure on the mayor. They're forced to launch an investigation into his own election to see if there was voter fraud because of the suspicions which were corrupted the Jones had Boston people from outside of San Francisco vote now who don't win Mosconi goes to the DA to investigate people's temple, the DA assigns the case to guy named Tim stone. And that was Jim Jones deputy also happened to be the district attorney deputy and stone who's one of the most powerful members of temple at the time. He finds out that the temple did nothing wrong. The book is called called city, its author is Daniel Flynn will be back in just a moment to talk more with him. And you're listening to the LARs Larson show..

The world of beer, which is in Tampa on in SoHo and now just learned from him that there's sixty seven of them, which is pretty incredible. It used to be CEO of outback and is involved in something mighty big now. And that's the faira energy ball and Paul tell us about that. Well, thanks for having me here this morning, Jack. I sure appreciate as always good to see you Friedrich's attacks is a rare disease that affects children typically between five and fifteen is the onset it's a neurological dysfunction. That is is started from two defective genes from mom and dad who were carriers, but don't know in aren't symptomatic about the disease. So it's fix a one in one hundred people are carriers of this disease has about six thousand in North America who have this disease, and we're raising money on Saturday night. This is actually our tenth fan. Energy ball. That's Friedrich Friedrich sa- taxi a research alliance. Our tenth energy ball to create funds to find a cure for this disease, which were just hell bent to make happen where they along the way as far as the research process over the years, what kind of steps are they making well. They made a considerable steps and Farah is highly highly recommend recognized as the exemplary rare disease to group-group in in the world by the NIH, FDA and other groups, so we have just a very capable competent and affective group and board of directors science advisory board we have just the finest team you could ask for and as a result. We've got some real advanced clinical trials, we have five drugs right now that are in various stages of clinical development, and they approached a disease mechanisms various way, so it's not like we have just one shot towards the you're the cure or treatment. So those are replacement gene therapy is going to be some amazing things as I'm sure, you know, in the next ten years going to be some real profound cures. I'm sure so got a lot of a lot of progress. We got new new drug compounds coming into our pipeline ongoingly. We've got the attention of large for. As well. Because this disease is expected to have some significant insights into other larger diseases that people know like Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, a OS any other. So therefore, we've gotten some considerable attention. Well, it's a great cause. And again the tenth year, and it's in a great location. The Tampa Marriott waterside, which is a fantastic facility is anybody who's ever been their nose? And where can they get information on it? So they can get tickets you could just Google up Farah energy ball and you'll see that. Otherwise website is WWW duck your FA dot org. And we also have on Thursday night. There's a science symposium Judy Genshaft and friends at USF have been incredible supporters over the years, and we have a science symposium camel's on Thursday night. So we have three researchers kind of our. Three of the leading researchers coming in. And there's a download for about three hours of just what they're working on the approach, and and it's open to the public, and it's also going to be webcast. So if anyone is interested in a little more deeper dive on Thursday, you can get that. And then actually on Friday, we have a large group of biomarker researchers coming in to camels as well. From around the world to to share insights and challenges on biomarkers on Friday. So that's one thing we do is get together different groups of researchers to opine and learn from each other and it really moves insights forward by years. So this is going to be a thing that actually begins on Thursday in Ghana culminates on Saturday night at the Farah energy ball. Yeah. Yeah. It's really the energy ball experience. Saturday night is just an absolute wonderful time. It's starts at six o'clock at the at the waterside as you mentioned. And again, you can. Just Google faira energy ball F A R.

"Of the ways he planned to torture his slaves in paradise God. So he writes his own opera lyrics and rights that litter. And then he signs it with like a gigantic exaggerated, cross circles, zodiac symbol. And then at the bottom he writes, PS the mount Diablo code concerns, radiance plus inches along the radiance, and he had like drawn this creepy map of like the top of this mound called mount Diablo with like these lines and like degrees, and they were like, we don't know his bullshit or what. But so when he said that kind of clue, they went and looked at it and they found out that the radiant angle when placed over the map per his instructions pointed to the locations of two of his attacks, my gosh. So he had act like they were like always foolish shit, like he's just drawn creepy stuff and trying to make is making his own like maps factually. Been able to like to the degree on a map, like create puzzles. At which really freak them out, I think because they were like, oh, he's full of shit. Like he's just amping himself up to be like a celebrity, but like he's just full of it. But it turns out like when he sent that clue, they did it in. They were like, oh, no, it literally points to the exact latitude longitude of where he liked it. Two of them are so very creepy. And kind of made them take it a little more seriously, right, right, right. So on October seventh nineteen seventy the chronicle received a three by five inch cards signed by the with the symbol drawn in blood this time. Okay. Yeah. And the stolen know who's blooded is or where he got it. So that's good. The cards message was formed by pacing words and letters from an edition of the chronicle itself, and thirteen holes were punched across the top of the card detectives agreed. It was highly probable that it came from the soda. So now he's going like beyond fucking crazy and like cutting out letter, so extra just so like us if we were doing a murder mystery party, right? Like if we're partying, but he's like raging, like we're, we're doing it for fun drinking game doing it for a way. We're doing it for a podcast. We do everything for guys, right? Listen, that's. That's all we do. Okay. October twenty seven. Nine hundred seventy chronicle reporter Paul. Avery who had been covering this case receives a Halloween card saying what it's sign with the letter z, and the symbol of zodiac and handwritten on the card was the no. Peek, a boo who you are doomed. Oh, no. Worst fucking thing. You could ever receive my God, horror movie status. Oh my God in real life for this card real yes. In real life, not in movie life. The threat was taken seriously and received a front page story on the chronicle. And soon after saving the letter abor received another anonymous letter alerting him to the similarities between zodiacs activities and the unsolved murder of a woman named Sherry. Joe Bates which had occurred four years earlier in riverside in Los Angeles more than four hundred miles south of San Francisco. So there was like this anonymous letter that he received right after that saying like, hey, why don't you look into the similarities between all these murders and like in this random one, four hundred miles south. So he reports his findings, November sixteenth, nineteen seventy. And here is the story of Sherry. Joe Bates who was the victim of this story that was sent to? Okay. October. Thirtieth nineteen sixty six. Remember we're in nineteen seventy when he receives slurs so named sixty six eighteen year old. Sherry. Joe Bates a student of riverside, community college nerve aside California greater Los Angeles, spends the evening at the campus library annex until it closes at nine pm neighbors report hearing a scream around ten thirty and betas found the next morning..
