"To Frisco with L's for the galaxy. That is crazy. And it happened again, Jesus Ferreira two goals, Alan velasco, had a goal. Paul areola to assist pax and polymer cool, nice little slip ball through to Ferreira for going. That's how you draw it up. If your Nico estevez after a match day one where you really didn't show a ton of ability to create clear goal scoring chances, the flip side is just the galaxy are helping you create clear goal scoring chances by, I don't know, letting balls over the top fall. So that Paul Ariel can square it across the 6. Also that, you know, my fingers completely lost trying to mark the center forward in the box and just ball watching. I think that's more on casares that play. But there's a huge success is 30 yards up the field. So that's why I'm A-okay, then what about the third? What about the third goal then, where it's like, you know the run that Ferrero is going to make. You know the angle that packs the powerful House. Why is literally everyone sleeping? Yeah, there's a bad defensive team. So that's the answer to all of that. They didn't get better. And pooch didn't get a ton of touches in this game, which hurts them. Because if they're not going to score goals, they're not going to be able to win games. But China FC Dallas, baby. And when get it done. Surreal hive. All right, Atlanta one Toronto FC one. Doyle, I wrote in here that Toronto C are in trouble. It's the Federico bernadette show to me. You've got, well, first of all, do you demand it goes off with hamstring tightness? So on comes Io, then Io goes off with hamstring tightness. Lorenzo and senior is not available, might be next weekend, maybe, but they played a very, very defensive sort of you take the ball and we'll just defend posture. Mike Newell, I just saw this tweet out there, says the burning question for the Toronto till I die podcasts are taking your content, trying to tell I die. Would you be okay with Toronto, see grinding out wins and draws like they did on Saturday if it meant they had to play a more pragmatic style. I mean, if I was a fan, I think I would be okay with it. I don't think bob Bradley will be okay with it. He's clearly okay with it for now, but in the long term he wants his team to play like LAFC did in 2019. They just don't have the horses for it. Their ability to win the ball back and in central midfield is not great. They don't cover a ton of ground in terms of that frontline defense at bernardeschi does, but he's incredible, but the other two guys, even when they're fit, don't do a ton of lifting defensively. So they get pulled around really easily, which means they're kind of constantly retreating every time they don't have the ball, which is tough. They do have two good center backs, guys who can do work in the box.

"For them is more dynamism, more like just raw counting stats, man, more goals and assists from the guys in the middle of the park. It feels like legit brought that. I think you said that already of like, he was a late he kind of found the LA galaxy top form of like later I box goal scorer a bit. Also can help facilitate things the final third. A lot of it's gonna have to come from internal improvement from Alan velasco. He's their record signing, I believe. If not up there, I don't remember how much dental came for back. Velasco was more the last guy was more. That needs to come. And there's the gas theorem. Like it should, right? There's a young guy who came to this country for the first time. And already started, he should improve your hope that his Jesus for it can be a creator for Paul areola Sebastian legit and Alan velasco consistently and maybe hotter O'Brien can score a goal here or there with this team. So the odds have them 5th to get out of the Western Conference, as I said, they finished. Third last year, where do you fall on that? My gut says 5th is about right. But given that they were third last year, given that they probably do have a little bit more depth and we should see just individually a step forward from velasco. And they should write back should be an upgrade. Because they struggled at right back last year. I'm going to I'll say over. I'll say they finish better than 5th. Yeah, I'm going to say over two because over, I think means 5th also counts. I think they'll be fourth or 5th. Yeah. A lot hinges on and cozy to far right or Sebastian and Bianca. I like to fara. I think when you talk to people and I'm a less last year, he was the, he was one of the, if we had to go get a starter from another team, he's the next guy up. He's viewed by a lot of people. He played better two years ago than he did last year. I think there's belief there. There's also a weird thing here where Justin chase is going to come back in June. I doubt he wants to be in Dallas.

"What type of teams should be interested in a player like dig a line is? Similar to the Joseph combo, a team that doesn't have to rely on him. Like, there's two sides of this signing. The biggest one is marketing. Let's be real. Like this is a superstar. Coming out of Mexico. He is the Mexican Messi. He was the most talked about player around the Mexican national team roster when he didn't make it for the World Cup. The fact that we're talking about a guy who can't sub in for Braga right now tells you how much he means to people. And he's 22 and so he's still somewhat young and it could change, but like this is a guy who doesn't play and this is a conversation we're having because he's a massive deal and so that's like the big part of it is is there a team that can take the risk because there's worthwhile stuff going on and maybe there will be worthwhile stuff on the field. There's not a ton of teams in MLS who have that flexibility. That's not the nature of a salary cap league. I think FC Dallas makes a ton of sense because it's Texas because it's a big name and they could bring him in, he probably isn't a starter. Maybe you don't even want him to be a starter, right? Paul areola, Alan velasco, those are your starters on the wings. But he's going to make a buzz. He's going to be a big name, and if he hits, it's great. Like Diego line as the dream is, he's an elite one V one talent that he can beat guys one V one consistently and neither come inside and score get to the online and create goals. If he's that player like you're fine having him on the field, whatever. You can rotate Paul areola after he plays 6 January camp games in the 97 leagues cup games and gold cup and whatever else, right?

"I'm going to go ask the Dallas. I'm going to go FC Dallas here. And here's why. The old expression tells us, right? Defense wins championships. Out of everybody in the west, outside of LAFC. The team that gives up the fewest goals is FC Dallas, okay? So I think right there, they have a big edge. Not only are they good defensively, they are much better hook than Austin defensively, who shipped three this weekend, three last weekend, and two weeks before that ship four against the New York Red Bulls, right? You gotta be defensively sound herc when it comes to the playoffs. Plus, let's not pretend like FC Dallas doesn't have firepower, right? We got a riola, we got velasco, and we got Jesus Ferrero who had a brace over the weekend and I think is now up to 14 goals on the season. You don't give FC Dallas and he love you really think defenses is that little of a priority come playoff time. No, I just think there are two seasons. There's a regular season, and then there's playoffs. And I've seen FC Dallas in the playoffs throughout their history. It's not a team like trust. Nicolas de you may have changed things. Paul areola, this is feda, everything that Sebastian legit now, who, by the way, backed a couple assists. This weekend, it could be a different team. Sure, but a sale smells like Seattle sounders a bounce them in the playoffs. Okay. Okay, okay. Interesting that you mentioned that. I will note neither of us neither of us picked the LA galaxy as the biggest threat to LA. So let's get to the bad and it is in the Pacific Northwest, where the aforementioned

"Well, Paul the other guy I want to ask you about is head coach Gregg berhalter. I think it's fair to say that he had his fair share of doubters when he got this job a little over three years ago. And I think a lot of that criticism has followed him ever since. What have you made of his performance during this World Cup qualifying campaign? I think it's difficult to say that Greg berhalter has done a bad job with this U.S. team. For example, if you look at the choice he made in the summer to split the national team in two. To play the quote unquote a team in the nation's league and the B team in the gold cup. Mexico didn't do that. They brought their a team to both tournaments. And what happened? Well, the U.S. won both the nation's league and the gold cup beating Mexico in both finals. Even then, people were saying, Mexico made the better choice. And they're going to be in better shape going into World Cup qualifying. Well, look at where the Mexico team is now. They're in this similar position to the U.S., but the emotion around that team is completely different. Content martino might not coach this team at the World Cup. That's how disappointed the Mexican fans are. Conversely, let's take a look at Panama again. And let's talk about the players who weren't on the field for that 5 one win. Weston McKinney was out with a broken foot to junior death was out with the hamstring Brendan aaronson was out with a knee injury. So you're reaching deep, deep, deep into the deaf chart here to pull players out that not just to play in the game, but to play in a must win game on a big stage. That trust existed because Greg berhalter split those squads in the summer so that he could see every player from the pool and give them opportunities. He's not been afraid to trust young players. This is the youngest national team in the world in the qualification cycle. He put those players on the field, understanding that things aren't going to be perfect, that growth is not linear, that there were going to be down moments. And yet he understands that those down moments are important for this group to learn and to grow, not just for this cycle, and this World Cup, but for 2026, when the U.S. hosts the World Cup. So I look at it and I believe he's done a really good job of getting the results in the short term, provided they don't lose 6 nothing to Costa Rica, they're going to the World Cup. So that's the first and most important goal. And the second thing is to create an environment where this team has grown together and where he's created a real core of this team. So in my opinion, the criticisms of Greg burter have been unfounded. And that's not something that could have been proved a few weeks ago or a few months ago, but now over the course of qualification and the role that these players have played that have seen so much of the criticism Paul areola scored the other night. An MLS player that fans didn't want to see on the field scored a really nice goal. So that trust is there and I think now that it's been proven out that it's been effective and it's worked. It's overall record is now 34 7 and 8, which I believe is the highest winning percentage of any U.S. men's national team coach. Now, granted, he also has, at least in my opinion, by far the most talented U.S. team ever assembled. So beyond this decision to split the team up to get experience across a wider swath of players, what do you think he has done well for this team? And I guess I'm thinking in particular about kind of tactical decisions. Has he made the right choices about how to line up and how to play strategically in some of these big games? Well, great for halter had an interesting quote last week where he's talking about what he learned as the men's national team coach since he took over in 2019. And I think the most important thing he learned was in 2019 when they lost to Canada in the nation's league. They got beat in Canada. They were outmatched completely in that game. They were trying to build out of the back, play the way Greg berhalter's club teams and specifically the Columbus crew had played. And Greg berhalter decided to change things. When you're at a club, you know, it's a building type of thing. And when you're at a national team, I think it's a winning type of thing. My mindset had to change, you know, to be much more about winning every game. And basically what he did was he changed the formation to a four three three, and he integrated more pressing. System that fit this player pool a little bit better. And I think that was the most important moment in Greg berhalter's tenure. When you think about winning nations, we need gold cup. You know, it was important for the mentality of this group to understand that this is why we're playing this thing. And in the same time, building a strong culture. So it's a little bit of that club attitude with the mindset that we're here to win games. He showed that confidence to them saying, I'm not afraid to change if it's not working. And let's play this way that maybe works a little bit better. The path to that moment, trying things out, seeing what worked best and then finding the system that was going to be the most effective and embracing it fully is what I remember of kind of the journey of this national team as it pertains to Greg berhalter's coaching. And I think effectively has changed the way this U.S. team plays, but also the responsibility that the players on the field feel toward the results. And lastly, Paul, let's go out on a limb here and say that the U.S. does not lose by 6 goals on Wednesday night. They qualify for cotter. What problems does this team still need to address between now and November? And then conversely, how high is the ceiling for this team? Well, the biggest question is who starts at the number 9. So that to me is the problem that needs to be solved. The problem is it can't be solved through coaching. Somebody needs to step up, somebody needs to be that guy. Will it happen? We don't know. Maybe. Maybe peppy figures it out at Augsburg and starts playing and start scoring goals. Maybe Norwich goes down to the championship and Josh Sargent becomes the number 9 for them and plays every game as the number 9 and scores 25 goals and is in great form going into the World Cup. We don't know what's going to happen, but it's not an easy problem to solve. It's simply personnel. That's the biggest question. And that question dictates, I think, the ceiling of this team. But I also want to note, again, if Christian Pulisic is able to be what he was against Panama. And if we see the continued evolution of a player like Gio reyna, who we saw his potential against Mexico with that 18 yard box to 18 yard box individual run where he was dribbling past 6 Mexican defenders and finally ran out of gas, then yeah, I mean, you start to get a little bit excited about, you know, maybe they can manufacture goals in another way. And if you can't find the number 9, I think the question becomes, how can we maximize the two star wingers on this team? Christian Pulisic and G arena. And so those are the two questions. Is there a number 9? If so, maybe we don't have to change that much. Is there not a number 9? If so, how do we maximize Christian Pulisic and G arena? And that determines the ceiling of this U.S. men's national team. Paul, thanks so much for breaking all this down for us and May there be peace in your family on Wednesday night. Well, when both teams get to the World Cup, everyone will be happy and my family is having a little party for me on Thursday and I think I'll be able to enjoy it a bit more. All right, we'll enjoy the trip, man. Thanks again. Thanks. You can follow all of paulton Oreos coverage of the U.S. men's national team at the athletic dot com. From wondering the athletic,.

"In the game at azteca. In fact, four changes. Two of them were forced, right? By suspension, he's got to take out Tim way and Deandre. They're replaced by Paul areola and Shaq more Luca de la Torre for Kellen Acosta and his feder for Ricardo peppy are the other two changes. Casey, during the entire qualification process, I feel like one of the things where Greg for halter has been criticized the most is his starting 11s. He pretty much got it perfectly right against Panama, didn't he? Well, you got the result perfectly right and the result came because you can pick a team and you can we can all have a discussion on should maybe Josh Sargent been in the squad and started ahead of Jesus Ferreira. You could have a talk that Joe scally probably is in better form than Shaq Moore right now to slide into that emergency right back spot. But in the end, a manager makes decisions based on who he feels comfortable with. Who guys he's worked with or have done things at different times. Greg picked a squad that came together, had to make changes, like you said, some of them forced, but put guys in and they performed and they got the job done. And in the end, a manager is the whole part of it is just the results that he gets. Greg got a big, big result on a big, big day, and that lineup helped him do that. Yeah, let me tell you, Seth, it's not that he got this lineup right. It's that he got the window right. Could you imagine if he went with a lesser squad into that Mexico game in azteca and they didn't get the result? They didn't get the tie. Now you're going into Costa Rica San Jose looking for a result to be in direct process of that World Cup instead of pretty much already being secure. I mean, sign some catastrophe, some miracle, you're pretty much in. So he got that right, and this twinkled over and it's a result. You got the result after that. But I was incredibly shocked. With the mentality of the team, one, and what I didn't see from Panama, too, this was a must win game for Panama. I mean, there's no tomorrow if you don't win this game. And they didn't even show up. Paul areola with a goal and an assist. He's probably one of the guys that you most think of as a Greg burr halter pick for the 11. Well, there it was. That one certainly paid off for the American coach. Let's focus in on goalies, Casey, Zach Stephan, I thought he was pretty shaky last night. Might be in harsh? No, no, not at all. I think even if you looked at Zack's body language in the facial expressions, when he knew he made some mistakes and the expression was, wow, I got away with that one. And that.

"And ready to roll. That hurt, of course, before Thursday's reports broke, interesting this from Stephen gough, The Washington Post who was reporting that ariola had withdrawn interest in going to group America on Wednesday night and was specifically asking for an MLS destination only. Now, areola seemed to refute that in his response to God's tweet, which, as you can see right there, calls on the legend that is Nick young, saying what? So help me out here. What's going on here and why does it feel like Helen Acosta two? I does feel like funny money, right? Let me tell you what I do know. I was one of the guys reporting. I was one of the few reporting what was going on from the global America side. Glue America had it initially asked for a loan. That was shot down. Then the talk turned into, well, permanent transfer. But America, when they started, like, we need our winner ASAP. That was two weeks ago. That is not ASAP. They kept America lingering around one, two, three, four offers. It didn't get done. America then said, you know what, I'm sorry, we have to pull out America is now involved in another player transfer. And all of a sudden we're hearing from Goff that we're hearing from others that it's arreola who wanted out. The reality is it seems like D.C. United leveraged glue America to up the price on Charlotte and on Dallas. When you say they were never going to sell the club America. I mean, I wouldn't say never because there are no absolutes when it comes into sport. But we've covered this here. These clubs aren't incentivized to sell out a house. Not if you can have gam or Tam or this funny money going around and up the price. And this is a record price of $2 million for ariola. It's a situation where if you're asking me, I think they leveraged global America and that's what happened there. I think it's a bad look for D.C. United. I think it's a bad look for the league too 'cause this is now in the span of a week. The second player, not just any player, right? The second national team player to come out and basically say, I wanted to leave Major League Soccer and I couldn't do it. I wasn't allowed to do it. My wishes weren't respected. That's not a good look for the league. That's not the message. I think that the league wants to be sending to players who could be viewed at domestically as stars. Guys like Paul areola and Kalani kasa. I don't think it's good for MLS. That's kind of the off field. The part of it hurt. What about the on field questions here though? And those surround Paul ariola and what this means for him in a World Cup year, right? Not just what it means for his career in a World Cup year, but specifically if America was actually the better spot for him to be leading up to Qatar. What do you think? I don't know if any goes to better spot. I mean, on paper, it's good about America, so you don't think I'm ready because I better spot than FC Dallas. Well, hold on a second. On paper, it looks like a great.

"It the Molly pitcher? Rest stop because that's one of my go to is on the way from New York. No, it's in central New Jersey. That's a tough, that's a top I 95 rest stop. Weaves you into this? Just know, just know that if you call a text Tom boger at about news, he will stop everything he is doing. To make sure that he is on top of that scoop. So he will stop. So you assume, by the way, one of the incentives in the 800,000 is winning MLS cup. And if they win MLS cup, they won't care what it costs at that point. So that's always positive. It will be worth it. Here's some other news notes around MLS right now. Dylan Lewis from Nashville the Red Bulls to join his brother Sean nilus for a 125 kilograms could rise to 200 thousand baby. Let's go both needless is on one team you have a right back in the center back, put them together. He's the number three overall draft pick in that first super draft for inter Miami. It didn't work out from in Miami. Didn't work out for a lot of people in Miami, didn't work out for him in Nashville. They had options that they preferred at that right back position, but this seems like a good opportunity with Kyle Duncan moving on to fill a hole that the Red Bulls had. So I think that's a good trade. It's a solid trade for the Red Bulls. Paul areola linked with the galaxy. Originally, this was put out by roger Gonzalez at CBS and Michelle giannone. I don't know if I'm saying that right Michelle, but Michele. He's been one of the legend shout out. He's been one of the best Twitter followers that I've found in the last 6 months and he and Niko kantor do an awesome podcast. U.S. football pod, and by the way, Paul Ariel came on the U.S. football pod and said that LA galaxy has already approached his agent about a potential deal but at the moment there's not been any formal offer presented to D.C. United. We've talked about how maybe Paul areola is a guy that we have a ton of quality obviously and international chops and all this experience. That if you're D.C., maybe you would be willing to move on from because you have Julian grassle and he's on a DP deal. Maybe you clear that salary out and go somewhere else. What do you think Dave? Yeah. I think this would be a deal that made sense for all three parties involved. Paul IRL is obviously a Southern California guy. He was in the galaxy academy 5000 years ago for 7 seconds, but it's going home for him. We know Greg vanney loves wingers that he can get in isolated spots that will get to the endline and pull balls back for chicharito or whoever it is..

"Conrad can do the same to i. Some of these selections are very kind of i. I feel a bit frustrated by them to see what you're saying. I don't have as big problem with it. Just because i think that right. Now there's a lot of like we've talked about. There's there's depth fear. And i think there's a lot of competition at a lot of these spots like players have emerged in a way that maybe like when tim way first emerged. Ricardo peppy wasn't really on our radar. You know matthew hoppy guys like that right but like now. Those are players to that are also competing for spots so for me andrew. Sorry to cut across you again. But paul areola for me is like a decidedly. You know we have an nba team in this us. Men's national we've seen that. During the summer he would be decidedly team player for me. Yeah i would agree with you. But i think bear halter does value some measure of experience mixed in with all these youth players with all these not youth players young players on the team. Okay maybe that's a role that he can occupy. The i don't know i know that there's there's always gonna be some frustration with these teams that are selected and part of. That is what i just said that. I think there's a lot of the pool feels larger now than what it was even a year ago. So there's always going to. There's always going to be people who who they feel. Their guy was left out. And i get that. I was surprised about pete. Fox maybe not quite as much conrad just because in his limit granted limited appearances so far for the us. He's he's done anything that's really stood out. No but i wouldn't has either not particularly but i'm fine with working with like okay like now it's way turn. Let's see now you get a chance to prove it again. If he doesn't do anything in this in this cycle of of qualifying in these three qualifiers than he may not be included in the next one is. We'll see like i said they. They just have a large pool to choose from right now so bear halter kind of like take chances with certain guys and i don't know generally i was okay with it. Yeah i think it's interesting. Also in the midfield look dilatory from hurricane will Will be of the squad a wonder will he get a run where we get a run three caps already so i'm curious to see if he's going to feature what's that. I don't have a huge amount of problems. I'm just no. I'm trying to air voice for the people understand upset with the forwards. I got that Weston mckennie being included in the squad. I have no problem with it whatsoever. I don't think that what happened in the last. You know i. It's a mark against him. It's something that you remember. If he slips up again then we can have an even bigger conversation. But i don't think this is the thing that you know. You're looking at any permanent suspension or anything like that by the way. He's still a very good player. And where without christian pulisic and geo raina so. If the us was looking to send some kind of message to weston mckennie i think it was adequately sent. When he was sent home from the last cycle he was embarrassed. It was an embarrassing moment for him. It made news here and in europe So further compounding. That with ben not bringing him back for these three qualifiers. I think now is. You're going too far in doing it. So i have no problem with them deciding okay. We move on western. Still a part of this this structure and we're happy to have him here so no for me no issue whatsoever with him being back. I'm happy that he's back. Yeah jeff carolina tweeted. This is from the press conference yesterday. This is on weston mckennie bear halter talking the one thing. I didn't love in how this whole thing got. Spun is just the lack of tolerance to lack of understanding for a player situation for the fact that we have a young group and this group needs to learn. I think we're we're too quick to condemn people not really understand a player's perspective listen. His behavior was unacceptable. He took responsibility for it. And we move on. We really do move on but will he be held accountable in the future. Absolutely that's going to be a part of it and he understands that the group understands that so we move forward. What what way was this spawned. All wasn't spun by anyone and we still haven't had we still haven't had a full explanation as to exactly specifically what happened from from. Us soccer are from gregg berhalter. What's the on about spin from lack of tolerance. There shouldn't be tolerance for this kind of behavior. There wasn't tolerance so why who what spinning are spawning. Is johanna boat. I don't get it that the media didn't spin this. Yeah i don't really. I don't remember feeling that way really either. Maybe he's using the word spin when he kinda means overreacted I don't know. I thought the reaction honestly. I thought it was appropriate. I thought it was appropriate for how the us handled it. Although i don't know it seemed like maybe they could have revealed a little bit more information about it rather than allowing you know rumors to run But that's not necessarily their job to you know to tell us everything that we want to know. Just out of our own curiosities and i was kinda fine with the reaction from the fan base and the media as well you know. It was a dumb mistake that he made and he got hammered for it. So i think i don't know i've kind of thought it was fair all around and i think it's fair that berhalter's bring him back in now and they're trying to move on from it and you know i think it's i'm all good with all of it And then so. The last one that i have here a one. I'm also i'm very happy. That eunice mussa's in the squad.
