"Of course, this year, it's moving online and will be released as three thirty minute video episodes through the catastrophic theatre temporary cooper. Welcome back, Houston, matters. Thanks for having me. So what did you have to change about this annual show? Once, he realized it had to be an online experience. Pretty. Much everything. figured. Our audience argues used to coming into a theater and being packed in together and seeing twenty musicians than actors. All closely together acting like lunatics in my show and So we had to re imagine how we could do this we as catastrophic general, our company didn't want to just sit back and wait out this crisis trying to move forward where this is less of a liability and more of an opportunity to get back to our roots and just sort. Sort of figure out how to make new work. When we started doing my show, it was done outside or on a bus, all kinds of inventive ways. So now we're filtering it through to the small screen my wonderful writing partner Patrick Reynolds because we had to rewrite everything with me we were able to to salvage I would say a good third of our original play concept and just tailor it to this this smaller viewing receptacle of your computers. Did, you have to change the subject matter itself over the course of production? Absolutely my shows are known for being reflective of current events, pop culture, and just the things that are flowing through my brain So certainly having a pandemic that we're all living through as a modern day, civil rights movement. These things certainly come into play at the same time I I. Felt like I didn't want the show to just be only focused on something like. Like covid nineteen it. It certainly is addressed i. certainly know from personal experience. My husband was sick for all of May and has now fully recovered, but it is an intense scary time and I didn't want this to be negative experience for viewers. So I feel this is still full of a lot of levity. Yes. A little lewdness is not a show for kids But that we can still address these things and issues that we all are going through right now of quarantine of isolation of the kids at home and find a way to see those and find the humor in things. At. The heart of this though, would you characterize this as occasionally if not, often reverend entertainment. That's kind of the goal here. Yes. I. Certainly, as I've gotten older, my show seemed to get more rapper at That's not one to have the kids gathered around. To Watch on the couch. We get the kids to bed. What motivates you to do this every year? What is it about the variety show musical format in particular? I grew up as a latchkey kid and had a very intense relationship with television and the old mgm movie musicals that you would see like the Friday late show movie So when this all happened pretty much march and I realized that we needed to reinvent says, I didn't want to let it. Go I didn't just wait I've had people that. That have lovingly come to see my shows for over twenty years now and I thought I have such a wonderful creative group of artists that work with me. We can figure this out So pulling on some of those things that I thought enduring from late night shows talk shows, but also from the Sonny and Cher show and variety shows That I.

"Harvey Weinstein Hotel Room scene. He F- God. How what was she doing there? I don't know Jay. I'll go back to your hotel room for the NIGHTCAP. And what is he not only does get naked in front of her then also to like light up that cigar in say draw something we did have that he had a very funny line that Lindsey played. Well SAM SAYS DON'T STAND THERE? Gawking draws something. Then Lindsey immediately gulps down her entire Whiskey. Because she's like Whoa. It's like I need a drink. Yes I'M GONNA look at a penis this long so melanie as glad that Sam is inspiring Lindsey. But it's curious to me why she just wouldn't tell Melanie that he's aggressively pursuing her. There's something missing in this story. Like all of a sudden it becomes like their secret but for no apparent reason right I get are. Are we supposed to believe that? Lindsay is like into it or something like that. And that's why this is what. I'm getting to my point in how I feel like the series then does a disservice to its lesbian characters. Like she's going through you know. She shows the portrait that she's done and the scene ends with her looking at it. And sort of like giggling. She's a little schoolgirl looking at this man that she drew weird. What are you I just I'm GONNA get frustrated. The more we talk about this particular storyline so listeners. I'm sorry but you're going to hear a lot of grunting for me. It's either in the next episode or one after that this becomes like one of the stories. So that's GonNa be a fun episode record okay. So we're changing a what we used to do which were hits and misses to tops and bottoms swim. At Matt's Catcher Bution so tops are good bottoms are bad. Wait a minute. Is there flaw? In logic here yes because we don't want the bottom friendly the positions as good and bad. So let's think of it as Metaphors it's like at the top of our list are the following points and at the bottom of our list. And it's just a double entendre. We have that listeners. Great tops I I've got to tops to easy. It's too easy gone. Top number one. I like the end credit signed. It was called attitude by swayed. I love that song and so it's easy top. Second top was Emmett's wardrobe was just amazing in every scene. He was wearing an amazing outfit and his closer beautiful. So hat tip to Patrick. Anti Bush is the costume designer costume perfectly in this episode where this came from all the sudden it was just like ms just like Bam on point out. We'd love it. What were your tops? I want to end just pulled one top from here And I would say that. It's worry finally start to see vulnerability in Brian through his diagnosis in surgery. We're seeing someone who is starting to acknowledge the good in his life and I think that's that moment with Justin when he says I missed you. We're starting to see that veneer starts to become you're able to mold it to where he can possibly accept this kind of love and I think that's really lovely. That's a good one. I I feel bad for picking too easy. Okay I have one bottom Michael getting so worked up over Ben. Throwing shade at this was an extra threat in an episode that was already like really richly woven with emotions and drama and Michael quote leaving. Ben Just didn't need to be a part of it especially because they get back together like in the same episode like not five minutes of screen time later and Ben's jealousy pretty much never surfaces again so it was kind of like a filler scene or filler content for me so. I didn't think that that really needed to be quite so heated and dramatic my bottom and it's GonNa be of autumn throughout the possibly the rest of the season. Is this idea that the series is trying to sell that. Lindsay is being charmed by SAM. He's such a Fini talked stocks. Yes she is being. She's being aggressively pursued by this person and I credit her with a lot more. I think she will be much more savvy to navigate. This like we think she is like like a step ahead of him in his game but we all know that fighting out later that is not the case. And so yeah. It's a huge bottom from me. What do you remember that Melanie had actually encouraged her to like us? Her woman nece. Yes am that is true but Lindsay Lindsay. He should have more brains than this. Yeah agreed this has been episode of season. Four two kinds of lies next time on still queer. As folk we cover episode nine and it's called ask some balls Polls have able that episode starts a great storyline for Emmett and a professional footballer looking forward to that one. Okay very excited. We could really use fresh reviews and ratings on apple podcasts. Or wherever you're listening to us so please take a moment and help us out. We really appreciate it. "Giving you the inside scoop on where to wine dine and spend your time. He's so transparent. There's no surprises with this. Boy. Okay. I mean, it's literally either a nice glass of sobbed blonde or a really really drink. So get ready. It's food for thought giving you something to to on good evening everybody and welcome to food for thought brought to you by the box enter this is Jenny Johnson. And my lovely other half. Billy Kosta is gallivanting on some island somewhere doing all sorts of exciting things, according to his text messages and his Instagram post, he and his girlfriend Michelle thinker at this point. It's public there in Saint Lucia. So they're. They're enjoying themselves. So I'm sitting down here for this hour for food for thought, and I'm very excited because I have a friend and a really wonderful person within the hospitality industry in studio with me right now, Patrick who's the interim CEO and CFO for wall burgers, Patrick, how you doing good Janika gut? I'm thrilled to have you here. I I've known you for a long time in various capacities throughout the hospitality industry. And of course, everybody has seen wall burgers pop up here there and everywhere not only here in New England, but across the globe on so how long have you been with all burgers about three and a half years. I got there at June two thousand fifteen right when lynnfield was opening up at market street, and that was our third unit. Wow. Okay. And where are you? Now, we are all over the country. We're also in Canada. We have two locations up in Toronto. But we go as far west as California we have three locations in California, Las Vegas. Down to Florida. We have a couple we're in the Carolinas. We have Pittsburgh Detroit. Cincinnati cleveland. So we're we're twenty nine units right now. But we're spread out across the country. Okay. That was impressive. And I imagine, you know, all these places very well. I do I do. But you know, we've had pollen the show a number of times, and he gives us, you know, great understanding from the culinary standpoint. From of course, he and his wonderful wild brothers and his wonderful mother alma. But we're interested in started the business background about how this all runs. And so this is that's your purview. That is that is that is your day to day. What does a day to day look like free Apache attack? So my day now with taken on additional responsibilities. You know, we're we're primarily a franchising company. So we run of the twenty nine units we run for them all in Massachusetts. So we have hang them which was the original that opened up in two thousand eleven lynnfield mass. Fenway down in Brooklyn avenue. We just open Dorchester. So we brought it home home for the brothers and the family. So finally have a Dorchester location at south bay. So my day right now since we're primarily franchising getting franchisees signed up with new leases selecting sites with them. And then getting them to open a restaurant shortly after that. So we have eleven franchisees that we deal with. Now, we have three other signed on. But the commitments that they've signed onto or in the hundreds of restaurants. So we're spending our days trying to find real estate trying to get these open. So we opened about ten locations this year, we'll do anywhere from ten to fifteen next year. And with our first entry into the UK will have a site in London Covent Garden that's under construction and about two heading over there in a couple of weeks with our Ireland franchisee, hopefully, find a site in Dublin. So people are sort of familiar with the franchise concept, but can you sort of walk us through? What exactly does that relationship? Look like, and what are the expectations from the franchisee and from you. Yeah. So the first thing is you're handing over your baby. So this is Paul's baby. And the brothers babies that were handing over to other people. So franchising is a nice way to grow fast. They call it asset light. So you're not using your own capital, you're using others others capital to expand your business, or what it does is allows you to grow faster with less capital. But the risk is you're putting the hands of your system and your restaurant in in the hands of other. So the most important thing is just finding the right franchise partner, making sure that they share your values, first and foremost, and then if you find a group that are sophisticated capitalized and share values, then you've found the right partner, and then you work on a deal for an area of the country. And a lot of the groups that were talking to our or signed up have existing operations. They have existing infrastructure. So they might have other. Concepts. Most people that franchise the franchise more than one concept. Okay. So our California guys that person, right? So I'm gonna they obviously have to have the capital, but what is their background what line of work started. You know, are these French restaurant tours their their restaurant towards their business? People are California franchisee was one of the largest Johnny rockets. Franchisees. Our group in Florida was big Burger King franchisee. So they've been around franchise in the understand what it means to be a franchisee, and what it means is you're taking on the system, and you're believing in the system that you're buying into. And your job is to execute it, and you're executing based on hospitality because you're in the business, you're actually couldn't based on your your business acumen. So it's a it's a it's an interesting way to grow. It's a little bit different. A lot of the big companies the big chains or primarily franchise so McDonald's Wendy's Burger King or in the ninety percent were mostly run by other people some of the challenges you run it. I mean, you you made the comment. Say that of course, everyone wants to have the same sort of vision as over your baby, what are some challenges? The. So some natural challenges is is the the groups that we're dealing with our business people. Right. And they they may have developed their own concerts at one point. So in some ways, they're entrepreneurs. So those entrepreneurs sometimes we'll their instinct is to put their own spin or their give their own take on what they believe should happen. Which is great because we're always taking feedback from franchisees. So we try to collaborate in that, but some of the challenges is make sure that you know, you put the guardrails in place in their following. So when we go visit the location in Texas, which will open next year. It's not, you know, they're not serving chicken soup, which we don't have. So you gotta make sure they're there. Within the boundaries to stay within the guard rails. But but the beauty is is you find the right partner. And there's some companies that do a great job of that Pinera, which is based here in Boston. You really have a great way to grow the concept. They really get the brand out there quicker than you would have if you had to build them yourself because it's capital intensive to build restaurant. You have a very interesting history that I want to chat a little bit more about in the next break. But I also wanna get some background about working with the brothers. The idea is that the brothers. Maybe just aren't really involved in the and in fact, it's the opposite. Everyone is very much very much family affair, so we're gonna take a quick break. We have more with Patrick Reynolds. Interim CEO and CFO of wall burgers here on food for thought brought to you by the BOK center coming up in just a minute. Still having some major problems south.
