Golf's Biggest Winners of 2020

"All right. Sean it has been quite the year. it's not over. I'm not saying it's over. But i am saying we're here to get ahead of all those year end lists of winners losers best of we're tackling it midway through november where we winners this year. Did we win. I'm not confident that we were. There was a moment in the middle of september where you hung out with bryson into shambo after. He warned the. Us open lumberton potato. The me i'm gonna finish that offers a little bit pizza or game. We proceeded to miss a flight about six hours later. Yup and yet we were somehow still able to make it. Torrey pines south and talk to a bunch of the best golfers in the world in the next twenty four hours. Is the drop zone peaked. In twenty twenty. I think we had to peak. Then you the major winner. We go to play the next. Us open course at sunset. We have a great little afternoon at torrey pines. And then we hang out with zander and burger and morikawa and just korda the next day. And so yeah. That's where that's where we won. That's a really strong point. We didn't we didn't get to perform on the course as much as we like to in a typical year. But hey we're we're not really here to bring our golfed the people it's not about us you know who it's about it's about patrick. Reed patch agreed is by far one of the biggest winners of twenty twenty. All right start off years number one winner. Patrick reed defend yourself is one of the biggest losers of twenty nineteen. You'll remember that. He got stuck in some bunker fiasco in december of two thousand nineteen and we thought that it was gonna follow him alone for the entire year is is is swinging. You thought that people are gonna continue yelling at him while he was playing like. They did during his playoff in hawaii. David ferte call him. Captain oblivious which i thought was a great little nickname. Peter costas was telling people. I've seen patrick reed improve his lie in the rough numerous times and yet here we are twenty twenty. And we don't even do anything about this. We joke about it. We don't care about it. Patrick reed one in mexico. He contended i think you can say he contended at the. Us open he missed one cut after the restart. He's a winner this year. Because we don't care about what happened in past. This is where the phrase bigger fish to fry comes in our biggest problems. Man what a great time to be alive. Last december where our biggest worry was patrick. Reed kind of messing around in a waste. Bunker in the bahamas life was pretty good So yeah i mean. I think that that's a pretty fair one because look we just. Don't even talk that much about patrick reed right now. He's sneaky number eleven in the world. He's gonna be back on the us ryder cup team. If he if he keeps up you know his current run and play. He's been damn good.

"I I think. I think in Corona Times. You should be able to do it. Oh, now you're using the damage to your advantage to wow, but they'll. Do you want to throw. In terms of the video. We shot in November, so that one doesn't hold as much weight. Along different well, the only reason I said because I'm taking advantage of the corona rules big time with the lifting place. there's no rakes anymore. So I'm able to walk these balls in these bunkers and I just lifted up in I. Smooth at and I service. DROP DOWN! Someone looks like lifting plates. That's the rule you're. You're menace out there, yeah? I wrote an excavator today and I lifted up dirt and I swung it around and push the places. Yeah, how what was what was your little photo? OP? What? What was that? Come from today? Once I went to a nice three, AK rockville links the little dump area in the middle of their golf course where they hold all there so I guess they did a ton of renovations at Rockville links and the they bought all their equipment. Usually you'll rent it right, 'cause. It's like whatever you may have to stay out of bunker in. Rents company they do everything in house. So all their guys like super that I go out with the actually like builds bonkers stuff so. I was able to ride. These excavators I was really fucking one talk about fast and loose. Are you should? I have a video that will probably out tonight just to get people. Stop talking about the bunker thing. Although it actually on that online, literally scooping out sand in this video, so I may write something like. I miss rice something like my next conquer shot or something. All right well, it'll be, it's. It's going to be fun to witness and watch the evolution of your defense of Frankie's bunker. Gate Frankie read whatever we ended up calling it because like I, said you've had probably four different ones during the show. I'm already it'll. It'll be fun. Stance is that I know I did the wrong thing in the bunker against the rule, so I'll say that like an annoyed when against the rules there, but I also just didn't know that the rules apply at that moment. So. Again. We'll see what that's dancers like. If I was in project stance I'd be like I deserve the penalty, but in my defense didn't know at the time that I was gonNA. Say you deserve the Bentley but badge agreed been like if I was in a tournament I. Bet yes, give me that stroke. The two stroke bounty, but I want everyone to know that while I was doing it. I didn't know receive mouth..

"My personal as a freshman in their elective between whatever theology classic wanted. Theology Marriage and family, so I'm thirty years old. I'm married with three kids, and I'm in the theology of marriage class with a bunch of college. Kids so it's quite entertaining The. The priests who who is professor, he loves me He loves my wisdom that I bring loves my real life experience so that will that one school, because like I said. It's a bunch of college, kids and we're. Learning, basically my life. Air Catholic. The family like I'm doing what we're learning. Exactly so. That in school, and then my other one is a finance class. It's macaroni class kind of on the world economy. So that means a grind. Bounds a lot harder. So you gotTa start you start. Camp like in about a week or you're supposed to. Is that if golf, do you? Do you keep playing when you're in camp or no? No so usually the end of July when we reported journey GAM. That's that's on the club's get hung up and. Hopefully. I'm not picking up again until mid February when we go back down to south Florida so Maybe that's part of the reason why my golf game is so inconsistent. Take six off every year it's. Like yes, I could go and like hit balls for thirty minutes or an hour while the weather still decent Minnesota but Especially in training, camp and stuff you get a day a week or so and. The kids are so excited to see you spend time with you. It's hard for me to justify this going up hitting balls. Although my three year, olds love going to the range now so maybe I'll be able to get them out and go hit balls for a little while because they enjoy going it so. Who knows maybe I'll be able to get the called a few times this year and How is your is your training at all been different because everything that's going on like. Is there a certain level of uncertainty that seeps into everything that you do because you're just not sure how things are going to play out, or is it pretty much the same? Yeah Oh? There's definitely a level of uncertainty I tried to compare it to two thousand eleven. We had the lockout and You know there was no offseason. So you know for me I played my last name at Notre Dame than you do all the. Pre draft training then we're drafted in and there was no rookie minicamp. Ota's no vet minicamp. Just ended July. We got the phone call report attorney..

"We have not talked a ton about this on this very show but the Premier Premiere Golf League has been Been kind of whispered about for a month or so now. I think actually our boy geoff. Shackelford broke the original story. Shortly after he was on with us so I would like to credit US really for motivating him to sort of get out there and getting the game and bring it which he did because again he broke this good for him but now it's kind of like we broke. We'll right no. I know what you're saying like trace it back if you yeah if you had to go back and like why did he break the story? It's like because the guys you know kicked his ass on the show and then we're like oh I guess probably get out there and do something boo broke the news. Speaking to hydrate your those fucking fire trucks out there. In New York City baby cheese the never sleeps a dozen especially at that shook. Exact reason missile. Three ten PM. It is so it'd be you're sleeping unless you have kind of Night shift or something Premier Gothic So it's been it's it's picked up a lot of steam in that they've put a face to it this. I guess this some like British lawyer this guy. Andrew Gardner is the League CEO. They've kind of started to reveal some of the proposed formatting. What I really love about. It is that it's gotten Jay Monahan and the PGA tour have had to come out and make comments and make statements Like if you compete or a part of this tour that you are out for the PGA tour Anytime you see the with the establishment and the status quo has to have even the thought of something else coming in and like you know interrupting their monopoly. It's just exciting. It's exciting for everyone Especially because the tore you know they get. We've had issues with them and strictness in this it's just you just like to see other competitors potentially emerge it could make the PGA tour better even if nothing really happens at the golf league people just like that they like kind of the the renegade like it's a bunch of rebels coming up in creating a different league The proposal would be an eighteen event schedule. A fifty four hole tournaments with shotgun starts for the first two rounds ten tournaments in the US swings through Europe Asia. Australia one stop in the Middle East plus the majors This could commence as soon as January. Twenty twenty two teams of four players Simultaneously Compete for an individual and team prize with a captain deciding before each round which two players scores will count for the team One of the quotes says it's easier to become emotionally engaged with a team and it will generate dimensions of storylines and content. So I guess. Would you have like that would be like your squad for the year would be? Is it almost like NAS car? I if that's how I'm understanding team name. I like the I like that aspect Frankie said Ferguson on it just picked up one one sentence in the last five minutes that one. And he's like yeah. I do like that yeah my mind's in shambles. I shouldn't have gotten myself so worked up. The rangers destroyed check. I know this is crazy. I don't even know how can potentially as a rangers fan. I have no idea how to feel resigned. Kreider horrific accident trained as a fan yovany. Yeah I have plenty ideas real early this year. Such a loser true. Who knows I will say. We are on the run and now it doesn't feel like the runs going to continue and do you think that the Premier Golf League Do you think that Step on the toes of the Barstool classic. You know okay. You don't know I think it's too wildly different People want professional golfers behind the other. One is just kind of comic offers us But I do like I think that if more golf leisure starting a. It's better for the classic. Yeah I think you've proven that you can have success right. There's not only one way to do it but I do. You know I enjoy that question. Frankly I would like more professional golfers to play in the bars classic. That would be great. Awesome quite difficult because we don't have the backing. I mean. There are rumors that this tour that the premier league offered Tiger Woods two hundred and fifty million dollars. We we don't have that. Where's that money coming from? Saudi Arabia billion dollars backing right. So isn't that we've got man city. They got kicked out of the US primarily because of the Saudi Arabia. They were doing I think like Emirates with they're doing some real sketchy payment because I think you're supposed to have yet. There are certain caps and this that and they were actually funneling through something different but they got punit they got banished baton band. Juniors Champions League the Monaghan the PGA tour being like you. You can't play in this and abusive to the same time. That kind of takes the knees out from under like the whole thing but I think it could be like an xfl NFL situation where the NFL lease the first time around with the XFL years ago. You just sort of see what works for the for the new league he pick it up pick it for yourself implemented in nearly. I think you'll be something similar to that. Yeah the very interesting part about it is that you know. They trace their roots back like six years when Tiger Woods was not involved in the game when Tiger was like and they essentially were like. We're looking at the golf landscape and the professional game and it stinks. It's just not exciting week to week. It's not There's not much you know backing player to player. There's not much interest outside of the Hardcore Golf Fan. It doesn't transcend the game and so there like. There's gotta be a different way than this kind of monotonous. They go the same courses same every week. There's just a new event on four kind of feels like who cares who wins this week. Somebody wins every week. What's the difference? So they kind of started with these different ideas of like a teams and shotgun and you can really pair up. I mean one of the comments. He says that like as a fan He loves the idea of being able to put rory and Brooks kept against each other like every single around and like that kind of Shit where you can really just kind of manufacturer almost to a degree. The best drama that golf can possibly create And from that vantage point that's very different than the PGA towards protecting everyone. Everyone's a great guy. Everyone's Classy You know live under par all their kind of es stuff and like their lack of transparency. They don't disclose like disciplinary fines. And things like that This is the exact opposite almost like the NBA approach. Were like they like drama up the story. They love the fucking storylines. That's what drives off seasons almost more better than the amazing right. And so that's kind of the approach and the angle. It seems like that they're coming from. They have been very clear and stated that it just doesn't work without the players. Select Rory Rory came out and said he's out and wants to be on the right side of history on this. That's tough. That's a knee cutter when nick cutter kind of segment. We're not lying from the number one player in the World Roy Brooks that we put them together. Roy's like none out doing this thing brooks I'm GonNa keep finishing in the top five and making like six hundred thousand dollars a week. It's like okay It's GonNa be tough without the players. Yes it's impossible not the players. So that's one of the big hurdles. A lot of people are saying. Now if Rory's comment that basically it's over before it even started But it's interesting interesting to about. It could even be just a thought. You know provoker for future Counter options to kind of what the PGA tour is. I don't know how you get past something that's as established as the PGA tour. That's so prominent. That's been doing it. That has all the sponsorship money that has all the stops. That has all the history I just like. It's it seems like too big to kind of get around basically there's almost no way to do it But this has been floated as an idea in. It's interesting and I you know I wouldn't hate this guy to just keep poking around because they just have like infinite money no and like you said yeah like the more like competition is probably not the right word inspires change a tour to try to do something different like otherwise they can just keep clunker along and doing what they want. Because they're the only game in town bring somebody else in. They gotta be like all right. Let's let's let's brainstorm some new ideas. It's going to make this fresh and interesting. Tell you this premier. I'll play in your fucking tour. They foreplay diva play. And you're absolutely I'll sign up right now. Yep Eighteen to. I'm going to need two hundred and fifty million dollars. Of course I don't need that much for the four hundred we take for the former us. That'd be great. I'm willing to go as low as one would but I'm with you. I mean I think it like this new this new set of ideas is only GonNa change the PGA tour. I think from a Fan side. I love the way the PGA tour is set up because it only rewards the players that are playing that well like they're the only ones that get paid every other sport. The top stars are rewarded financially. And it's a set fee so I think that's where it has legs because if this tour treats the players better and is a more stable set of income than it could really inspire change Because if everything is backed by the players in that is kind of the safest way to make money that I do think that that will really change the way. Payment and players are awarded across the tour. The problem with that is like they're only focusing on a smaller number of people and like the best players in those best players are already making X. and having doors from deals on the PGA tour. So it's very hard like cell right as you can make them double the money there. I know but there's definitely a line there from where they are where the PGA Tories and again to like transplant. Poke around wherever the money is coming from. Because I think that's like stated but really not sure where the money's coming from and WHO's funding it. I think it does help like power chain. I'd love to see who the first player to flip is going to be if there is one like. I remember when I first watched the XFL A couple of weeks ago like the first day of the Games are starting up. And they're like Cardinal Jones face of the Lee and they're like all right who's going to be the face of this leaves argued..

"I mean there are lots of ten year olds with great golf so yes but to see Charlie Woods peering a golf ball in front of his father is really fun yeah. That's pretty much that there's something in golf that we have not seen ever from the most popular Gulf player in history so that was pretty much. My thought process and Saturday taking us is. It's taken at that. It's it's probably fine now. People online were mad. Because we don't want to have to put pressure of in eighteen major championships on Charlie Woods and any major championships of PGA tour Gulf of anything on Charlie Woods. He's ten years old. He needs to live you know. Let him do whatever he wants to do. Don't put expectations on him Which I think is fair at the drop zone? We'll say it's probably fine that we don't put expectations on top. Charlie yes but is it so wrong to discuss him. Is it Casey off limits if he won the tournament. We'd probably talk about that. Charlie Woods Wins Junior event. He's really good if you took last in the tournament. I think it's probably unfair to talk about it. If he hits shake on that driving range shot instead of appeared heard nine already hit. Yeah it's probably fair to make fun of him right definitely. There's a lot of things that can go either way here. Based off of what happened in the reality what is we. Were just taking the context from what we were given His Dad's caddying for him. The Greatest Golfer of all time is looping for his son his sons got a great swing can. Can we not comment on that. I think it's just harmless in it's fun and also we had just never seen it before you know. This is a curiosity. People got not really excited and for the most part the reaction was very positive but look I do understand. I understand the the backlash that you know. Tiger himself probably got a little bit screwed up by getting so much attention at such a young age and he's done a pretty intentional job of keeping his his own kids out of that same spotlight and he's done pretty well at it you know. He's not bringing Charlie on TV shows and I think one thing that we need to remember remember is that potentially this outrage the initial rejoice and then the original followed was probably okay like I think that will be a net positive. Is that anyone anyone who shared it. probably learned that you need to probably approach future situations lately like you need to add a moment of reflection myself myself like okay. Was this an okay thing to really be putting out into the world. Yeah and I think yes because it's the first swing we've seen. It's just a fun swing. It's it's were celebrating it you know look I do. I expect him to win at eighteen major championships. No I don't expect any major championship would have been different. If on a CA- SORENSTAM's youngest did this. That's the thing it's it's more like Jagger thing. It is a reflection arguing tiger in the world. We live in what it means to go viral. It's probably all a little bit unhealthy but that same environment also means that we're going to move on from this. Yes very very quick sure. We're not sending reporters to Charlie Woods Junior Golf Tournament You know we're not going to take Paparazzi photos. None of that. That would all be weird. I hope for his sake that he can just sorta do his thing quietly. Obviously there will be attention. Paid to you know whenever he tees it up but I hope that he can just play golf for a few years have fun with it. He's obviously got great game. He played the next day and shot even par In another nine hole of going to win a couple of majors I think he's GonNa win a couple. US Kids Stewart junior golf series majors probably down the road. Although it's competitive man yours can imagine you grew up in Massachusetts just banging against these kids in the country woods like you probably dominated junior golf. I didn't even play golf tournament. Tila aw fourteen never heard anybody. Can you imagine the competition in southern Florida competitively. You went up against Charlie Woods at age. Ten right now would have started. I I would say for every high school golf team in my county. How would that good all right? Let's move on to our final bit of the day It is a segment called underrated overrated properly rated. We did this couple months ago and every couple months. We're going to do it. Because what else are we going to do. We need to rate things. Give music my first one for you. Pete Dye passed away last week on for years old very very well known. Famous course designer is he as a course designer underrated overrated or properly rated. Look Pete. Dye is if anything underrated I would not have told you this. Sadly before he died because it took me looking back through his list of course credits to really see the impact. He's he's had and also looking back through like just the legacy he had on the PGA Tour T sawgrass certainly not my favorite course onto her But the The way he built it and the way he responded to pros hating it at first is pretty fun sir. Pretty awesome and it's a different look. It's a different style of golf course but in this era we see so much calling. PGA Tour players. From basically every stakeholder in the game but when guys told him that they didn't like his course he said good he said you know. These designs should challenge people that should make people think not everyone. Everyone should like it anyway. I had a ton of good experiences on Pete Dye golf courses. My favorite the honors course in Tennessee. I know he's become near and dear to your Wisconsin heart as well totally. I've played whistling two and a half times whistling straights He designed designed all four courses all four courses so they had this package. You sign up and you play all of them. It's called the diabolical package which is pretty cool. I've played black wolf run that that was the lynchpin of of creating Wisconsin as a public golf destination. Everything that has that has manifested vested in Wisconsin as far as public resort Gulf starts with P. died designing those golf course. And he's you get Aaron hills a number of years later you have sand valley alley now. There's the century courses. It's crazy like Wisconsin is a golf place in the same way. That South Carolina is now and Pete Dye making those those courses very tough very fun to watch on television. They're very expensive but they are very much an experience that you should have. If you're if you're an avid golfer that that's that's that's him like I will say this though I think he's properly rated because he's not gonna go down as one of the greatest Lake Make Obamacare made this point thirty years from now. Oh you will not be talking about P. Die Courses Like having staying power so to say interesting like the Kiawah course. The Ocean course is incredibly incredibly tough and you have to pay a lot of money to play it. Same with whistling straights. TEEPEE SAWGRASS cost a lot of money to play it like. He's made these experiences that are like kind of like one off experiences. Not Necessarily your home club that you WanNa play every single week. You KINDA. Don't like stumble upon Pete Dye courses. No You might stumble upon a seth raynor course in the northeast somewhere like. Wow he designed this. Yeah can't you know you don't you. It's Donald Ross. Yeah you don't you don't happen upon die courses a couple of quotes for you. I put this into her confidential but when TC SAWGRASS US Open in the early eighty S J C snead was a solid to replace at the time he said. The course was ninety percent horse manure and ten percent luck. That was pretty good. I thought Tom Weiskopf. It's like being an inside a great big pinball machine. That doesn't sound like an endorsement. Now those are not endorsements it was a fun golf course worse it continues to be a fun golf course to watch. It creates a phenomenal tournament. I will tell you that like every single year the players had like kind of regardless regardless of what the weather is. The champion is like twelve under to sixteen under rory. One at sixteen last year like Jim Furic was chasing him. The fact that Jim Furic in Rory mcilroy can duke it out and like you don't really know who's GonNa win on the back nine of of a tournament that kind of tells me that's a good championship golf course alright. Primetime golf off shown We've been seeing the Hawaiian golf swing. Here we've been. We've seen playoffs the last two weeks tournaments finishing like eleven. PM mm-hmm overrated underrated. Properly rated. It's going to be underrated because Right now we we appreciate it but it could be even have even more of it. NFL playoffs take away. A lot of the Gulf's viewers at during this time of year. They're going to do it this coming weekend. and definitely during the Super Bowl weekend we feel like golf is trying to fit in the cracks and this is the perfect time a year to just like fit in after football So it's it's underrated for sure all right. Would you like to see more West Coast tournaments. I mean like last night I was like this is awesome this morning. Battling my way onto the subway to come in in record the pod and just a few hours sleep. I think we have the perfect number of Primetime Golf tournaments however we should aim to have many more prime time major tournaments tournaments. Oh like if you think about the four majors. A lot of them take place on east of the Mississippi We had pebble last year. We had TPC harding writing park this year. We had chambers a couple years ago like once in a while Olympic club gets one. La Country Club is going to get one in a couple of years. But everything's happening really out here. Yeah you get the courses in Wisconsin of hosted majors. That's East Mississippi. You got you got you know. We're not gonNA talk about the players as a major but the players is a big time. Golf Tournament Everything in New York between wing foot and bethpage and Shinnecock and oakmont doc. Everything when it comes to major's done before five or six o'clock yeah. The Sony Open was a tasty little dessert after a day filled with NFL. I I didn't get the sense. There is a lot of juice to the tournament but it was still nice to have late. Were a pro Chambers Bay podcast so I think we're all rooting for another major. They're all right. John Taffer is he. overrated underrated properly rated as a golf course management consultant Sean. I'm so glad you asked Happened to do a long long long. You know you edited it Q.. And A. With John Taffer. WHO's Ahah what is it? He's a hospitality expert expert. He's a bar. Scientists is the host of bar rescue hired a lengthy phone. Call with John Taffer he. He gave some insights sites. He's probably overrated. Yes if we're being real I can say both of these things. I really enjoyed talking to him. I thought he had some fun ideas. Are They Gospel. Maybe not but it was. It was fun to talk to him because he's generally outside the golf world these days mhm. He started early in his career. And you know as as a golf guy but he his ideas were largely based around How you make more Revenue Avenue at a country club from each person every member every guest? Every single person has visiting the club that day. He wants to take more money from that monetize grant it. Should he be faulted for that like that type of generic job more money more money more money more money so you know I can see why he might be champion champion for that however if we if you remember if drop zone is members at winged foot And we show up there and John Tafer's running winged foot and John Taffer trying to get us to buy something before around something during our around something after a round. Have Dinner at the club John. I don't got that kind of money to always be giving it to you every time I come here. That's what he wants Well our I guess to push back a little bit on that though I think his point wait is that you are creating experience you know at the golf course you want people to go have a good time stay around I snack a beer or two the seltzer maybe hey John Taffer Seltzer which he effectively plugged a couple of times so I think that that mindset is a correct one and golf courses do need it to be thinking you know what other offered l. o. been more of a revenue mindset a lot of the time people want that they don't even know that they want he he was he was talking about offering a four pack of drinks. When you call for your teatime something like that people might have a good time with that and they just don't even know that they want wanted so I think some of his ideas were good but so you really reason golf more expensive John? The only reason I said it was over because people loved it so much People love John Taffer. That was one of my takeaways here. and I think he hit on some stuff but it was probably a little bit reductionist. Didn't have a super nitty gritty understanding of the modern Gulf world. The Country Club. You know like the six Martini Country Club Day is a little bit outdated playoff finishes. This is Sean. This is somewhat related to Primetime Golf. In that extends the Golf Tournament later into our night. But we've seen to play off finishes to start the year. There's a lot oughta mayhem around these tournaments. Do you think the playoffs themselves when you go to extra holes overrated underrated prop underrated. Every we single time that someone is coming up the eighteenth hole with the lead the seventy second hole of a tournament. I'm cheering against them to win Generally speaking I want what happened to Brennan Steel deal to happen because chaos is fun and you want Gulf to have one on one bunch of other sports have like these one on one scenario where someone on the bottom ninth has two runners on and it's either win or you blow the save and it's game over or a number of things in in basketball have one on one scenarios Gulf can have that all the time it can happen everywhere and I'm cheer for it constantly so it's underrated fun stuff happens you actually feel motions in those times..

"All right we are back. The drop zone is backed down to chair his back. Look Sean is back. You may have noticed that we haven't published a podcast yet. In Two thousand twenty and as disheartening is that was we're we're happy to be back. We have a bunch to get to. Today we have a lot of planned for twenty twenty first Dylan Clemson. LSU play tonight. Oh which school has has more major championships. WHOA I don't know I have not prepared for this clemson trick question? They are tied with one major championship. Each who won those majors killing me. Jonathan Byrd known funds and Golfer. I can think of right now. Lucas Glover won the two thousand nine. US soap sure. Did he went to Clemson David. Toms didn't win a major David. Toms did one of ages one. PGA Champion on blast already. Twenty twenty off to a rough start. The school has had a more recent individual national champion in golf in Golf. Unless you who who want enlighten me your boy John Peterson. Oh my goodness yeah yeah now amateur no longer playing pro golf do the word on his amateur status yet no no. It's kind of like forever gray area. John John Petersen's prone amateur status but big game tonight carrying on. We played some January golf. We did unseasonably warm temperatures as they say. Record good breaking. It was sixty nine degrees in central park. Yesterday was the first time I played January Gulf Nice temperature for some gall north of the Mason Dixon is that right. Yeah Never Klay January golf before well sign of the Times you played on Saturday. How the game feel the game I've never driven the ball better. I've never scored worse when driving the ball. Well so we're we're in the middle of something right now but George Jenkins gave me a tip in November. Hadn't really been able to do anything about it until now so we're working through some things while you're game though. Oh all right now if you insist Honestly it takes a little while to knock the rust off I did ADROVER UPSTATE NEW YORK. Yesterday to drop car came back down so I'd been sitting for a few hours and then got out at Split Rock. Old Public. Public course was jam packed. People were Jonesing to get out on the golf course. You could tell you asked me to go during the packers game. I know that was rude. Congratulations by the way. Oy Anyway. It was sunny windy difficult conditions. It took me like nine holes to really get warmed up and then it. It was dark. I had some minor like golf. Course Design Enlightenment this weekend. Oh yeah so. I've played at Sandwich number of times now in the past twelve months. NOT TO BRAG NOT TO BRAG It's it's a really really fun place and it's gotten easier over the years. I used to be like really really hard. One of the toughest clubs probably in the northeast. HAS IT changed change. Your it has changed. Yes the first hall used to be like trees lined everywhere and they took out a bunch of trees made it a lot easier. It's relatively and easy are four now now they also made a bunch of different changes on the green so basically in the last two years. It's been cool to see a club. Take what its members want aunts and put it into action Not require some gigantic. Like earth changing redesign they changed I think five Greens and they changed that I I whole two years ago. Little more playable. Now over the past year they took a number of run off areas and just kinda shallow them out a little bit some of them were like really tough and from what I heard. A number of members were like this is a little bit too tough which is great to see what members want like that's the essence of private Exclusive Country Club. Golf is like we are the members and we WANNA course to play this way or that way. Can you do something about it. And they're actually doing something about it. That was cool to see interesting. I I feel like with members. It cuts two different ways right. Some guys just WanNa make it hard hard hard. They want guys to come into their course speed up the Greens shoot a hundred sure her. But if you're actually playing day-to-day yet it seems like judging from how many people were there on Saturday. It seems like it's pretty dedicated. That's what I just have to trying to appease as many people as possible. Let's keep moving to the Sony Open. We talk about a lot of this because a lot of things happen yesterday. Cam Smith won in a playoff over over Brennan steal. This comes exactly six days after. I said it was impossible. That Cam Smith would become the top ranked ozzy. I feel a little bit worse about that prediction now. Now you think he like printed out to confidential this week and just like taped it to the inside of his locker where he was ranked fifty fourth in the world. Adam Scott played great golf. Alfred Fall He's now ranked thirteenth Cam. Smith is ranked thirty first so there's eighteen spots between the two and it's very plausible. That came Smith could be the top ranked ozzy at the end of this year. I I mean this is his first ever individual win yeah. He won the Zurich a few years ago with Jonas blixt as his partner. I mean this looked like it was going to be kind of a home. Finish mich- didn't look like we're GONNA have much to tune in for on Sunday Brendan Steele had a half plugged. Lie Yeah Stars back. Shot and chipped opted in yelled it out they were talking about. This could be a big swing. He could make four. Were San Hicks said that this would be on the highlight reel for the rest of Brennan's steals career. You basically said he's GonNa win this tournament. It's GonNa be because of this shot and he'll be thinking about this shot for the rest of his career. I think that might have been an overstatement. Well so that was a number eleven. Yeah he did not make pot as far as I could tell the rest of the way home made two bogeys bogeyed the first playoff hole but there was a lot of drama on number knbr eighteen. Yeah well why because guys were Webb. Simpson blocked his tee. Shot to the right. He can't can't make Birdie Ryan Palmer blocked his tee shot to the right. He's in the fairway bunker. Well full slowly move on from that. My favorite moment of the entire golf tournament was Webb Simpson. Simpson waiting for the green to clear from two hundred ninety seven yards away. Simpson's never hit a golf ball. Two hundred ninety seven yard. He was in the rough. The wet et rough was kinda getting cool. Rainy he he ends up topping three would and it skips on the fairway and then he leaves his Birdie Putt short get into a play. That's the easiest hole in the Gulf. Course guys were breaking down at the end. You love to see that I mean. He's averaging four point four for the day and that must gone way up in these last couple of totally one of the one of the people that sent it up Ryan Palmer Because he went full send using the fairway bunker right said Hey I gotta make Birdie to get involved in trying to win this tournament because at the time Brennan Steel was twelve under par. Two Strokes Better Ryan Palmer full send three would full whole full full. Send hits off the video board And we don't even know where it is right now now off the Gulf oil. Let's start at the beginning. You're caddying for me. Are you hitting this shot. One shot back. Do you let me pull three. Would out of that bunker. The scary thing is I don't feel a lot of confidence with your three iron from from that spot I would probably give you five iron. Say Try and hit this one hundred seventy yards and then have a full pitching wedge in when I mean for an absolute PGA tour pro. You'd think he could hit a shot. Two hundred yards And then have a wedge in Dan to eighteen And try to get up and down from a wedge distance. What is he actually going to do with the three would? Let's say he hits the perfect shot will he. Basically they did the perfect shot his second. Time around okay. Yeah and he was still sure so sure. Although we're into you got up and down but what are you trying to do with that three. Would you're trying to get unlike a fifty yard circle forty yards away. Maybe hindsight is on our side here because he fanned it lost his golf ball. Webb Simpson was is looking in someone's Swimming Pool area like the cursory. Like I'm going to help you out GonNa find this thing. Morikawa was over there to their. They're clearly just looking. Obviously the ball is not going to be there. There were no like bushes. It could be hiding in just a bunch of like trailers all right so to two more points on that hit Provisional Ryan Palmer hit provisions here in the second last group. You guys are already waiting. You've got guys squeegee. Being the Greens. Everyone is waiting. You hit the ball off a scoreboard or a video board. You have no idea where it's going. He hit another ball. You know who like very quickly captured optioned the essence of what was happening. There was no Lang Up. Chris Almond tweeted out. I think you're a little bit too dependent on people finding your golf ball. The grandstands taking care Europe things. If you don't hit provisional from that spot if you hit a ball off the freaking video scoreboard and you have no idea where it is. You're just depending on the the people surrounding the eighteenth hole. That someone's GonNa find it. Maybe that was sort of his dog. Marcus even hitting three would from there was. We've got this amphitheater. Exactly get to that though. Oh my last thought was just. Who's GonNa Find Ryan Palmer's ball right presumably at some point yeah and the cleanup process? This is going to end up somewhere talking about that last night. I wonder if is it in. Someone's yard is in the tent in the video board. It's gotta be those hedges. That Webb Simpson was kind of casually not not really giving too much attention to it was kind of like well. I've got another twenty minutes left in this golf tournament and need to act like I'm GonNA use those twenty minutes to help my play a partner right and credit credit to golf channel though for capturing on the His drive back which is the worst feeling in golf is driving back and then having to reload where you just hit the ball. Ob if to go hit that exact. Same scary shot and they showed the angle was from behind behind Cam Smith and Brendon Steel. And they're both just Kinda you know glaring at Palmer. Essentially there was they. He did a nice time like playoff golf. One thing that they kept replacing or said you know if he drops it in this bunker he's probably gonNA plug and and so he went up..

Patrick Reed 'blindsided' by not being paired with Jordan Spieth at Ryder Cup

"That's Patrick read our grapes following the Ryder Cup, and he goes for the trifecta here. Peeps. Not only does he tell the New York Times. He was blindsided. That's his word not mine. He was blindsided by the decision to split him up from Jordan Spieth after he and speed had performed. So well at previous Ryder cups, and they have made I'll give Patrick that. He and speeds were four one and two meaning four wins one loss and two matches that ended up all square they were four one and two in the Ryder Cup. They were eight one and three if you include the President's Cup, which has a different version of an international competition team competition, and so Reid and speed. They were kind of this this pairing that the US had counted on in recent years except that Jordan speed likes playing with Justin Thomas because they're really good friends, and they went three and one at the. The Ryder Cup. So you have retelling the New York Times he was blindsided by the decision to put him with a different partner. Which oh, by the way, happened to be Tiger Woods, read and woods were oh in two together. And did not play re didn't play at all on in the Friday or Saturday afternoon foursomes. And so he was left out of those to read then went on to describe the decision making process like the buddy system, so more like a popularity contest where he says that the input of much of the team was ignored in favor of a few select names now he didn't name those guys, but Tiger Woods. Phil mickelson. I don't know about fail that to me doesn't feel right 'cause Nichols. Didn't play at all on Friday. He had to watch on Friday. And then. The other idea would be that it's more of a popularity contest than it is about what might be the best for for the the US Ryder Cup team. And then finally read says, it's obviously that Jordan didn't wanna play with me. Ooh. That would makes me cringe the most. So singling out Jordan and saying it's obvious that Jordan didn't want to play with me. First of all, what are you five years old? Okay. Maybe you're maybe you're seven you're seven, and you're worried about whether or not Jordan speed likes you. Yeah. Just. Maybe if you'd waited a month and come out with these particular comments, they might have been taken more seriously. But part of the problem is you're making these comments in the hours after the US the US lost the Ryder Cup and really did. Not look good at all against Europe. So this was not a a rider Cup to write home about for for team USA, the pairings did look off. They didn't look like other than speed and Thomas. And I think who else. Looked good. I mean, there wasn't a team that looked as good as Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood. I mean, those guys were so good together. And the United States is always seemed to struggle with the team concept of golf,

All You Need To Know About The 2018 Ryder Cup

"All right. Let's transition over to the Gulf side of things here because I want to make sure that we've got some time to talk about the Ryder Cup on the twenty sixteen Ryder Cup at Hazeltine was probably the most invested. I've been in golf in a very, very long time. It was a great event to watch. Obviously, you had Patrick Reed and Rory mcilroy going back and forth. You know, I'm expecting a very high energy environment here over in France with the twenty eight team version at the golf national. This is also the site of the Olympics in twenty and twenty four. So we can do a little bit of handicapping on the course for that as we've got five rookies on team Europe, I believe three rookies on the US team. This is a match play format. Friday, you've got foursomes and fourballs four balls would be the alter. The better ball foursomes would be alternate-shot same thing on Saturday, twelve individual matches on Sunday. So that's how will break down the format here for the Ryder Cup and Ryan. Let's start with a look at the. Course because this is a situation here where the European team has a distinct advantage over the US team. Here angel. So the Europeans majority, of course, very, very well. Handful, the Americans played in that event of, I think on the course side of things, it's narrow. There's a lot of water, but it's match-play so. Just generally speaking. The difference here is there guys that can just don't win because they always say snowman somewhere over four days. They have also or two that shoots themselves out of a tournament. This is, you know, scratch it off, get onto the next hole. So the guys that can be be stars in this kind of format of the aren't necessarily the guys go out and win tournaments. Justin Rose is number one of the world's great. He's he manages golf courses. B doesn't take himself out of gulp Jim, but he's the number one player in the world.

"Lawrence on cbs sports radio what i did like was the dichotomy the complete difference between the way patrick reed was following the final round action in the way jordan was doing it wasn't doing it would be more accurate so in case you didn't know jordan i keep calling him jordan reed jordan speed celebrity couple jordan reed jordan spieth was nine back to start the day on sunday and made this incredible charge he was flirting with the course record which is the sixty three he ends up bogeying the last hole but again was nine strokes back and had a bunch of guys in front of them to begin sunday and so he swears i don't know if it's believable or not he swears the course of this incredible round that he had no clue what was happening in front of him behind him around him he didn't know where he was on the leaderboard the first time i saw the leaderboard was after i tapped in on eighteen honest to god didn't look wants today that was my plan going in nine back go out and just have fun don't worry about the the golf tournament itself worry about playing augusta national i heard roars i knew somebody was playing well with eight people ahead of me starting today to get that much help and shoot a fantastic round was nearly impossible almost pulled off the impossible i have no idea i didn't know when i finished and i looked at the board i could have been in the lead by two and i could have been down for and and neither one what a surprise me i mean it's hard to believe except that if that's the idea that's the plan if he's trying to avoid leaderboards i just think curiosity would kill this cat i don't think i'd be able to not know there are times playing basketball games where you're not watching the score every second that part i get but to not check the leaderboard even one time so you have no concept of what you might need or not need on that last hole and then he hits his tee shot on the.

"That was the other part of tiger woods is people love tiger woods and people hated him but you couldn't ignore him because of how he was and that's that we just read now we've got a group by committee filling the tiger void a young group by committee doing the things that only tiger did by himself the last time we saw it seventeen years ago and so if we're going to delegate all of this labor around everyone else we're going to let rory and jordan and all these guys handle the great side of this and the rat pack side and the lovable young group of guys that more and more young people might be able to relate to 'cause they're on snapchat and they're dating models and all these things that we all wanna see out of young stars could a guy like patrick read be the other side could he be that balance that we need someone on the tour that you just flat out don't like someone to go toe to toe with these guys in the way that patrick reed has made no bones about he sees that other people want these guys to win more he's brushed up with them before could that dynamic be something more of what we need to produce more sundays like we got this weekend because we were all entertained this weekend and now that we know that there's a little more bite to the relationship amongst all these players does that help us going forward does golf need a bigger villain and patrick re be that guy we know he's got the game now to back it up which is half the battle with all these guys is being great is one thing but we had the personality for so long and that extra bite with tiger woods that made a different can we manufacture that with a group now and is that even somehow better for golf get in touch with us.

"And we welcome you to augusta national golf club kevin kugler maureen macdill as the day comes to a close at augusta national it was indeed an eventful day we started the day with questions about the weather by the end of the day we looked at questions about who might take home the green jacket too strong contenders emerged patrick read the leader after round three at fourteen under par three shots back rory mcilroy one of three atop the leaderboard firing a sixty five today he's at eleven under par rickie fowler a sixty five nine under par for the tournament and jon rahm also a sixty five he is at eight under par for the tournament but maureen the story today the play of patrick reed and rory mcilroy and what a smorgasbord of delight sat walls kevin i mean really at times it was hard to know where to put your attention and i think the cost was beautifully setup weather conditions where challenging but the where some receptive home vocations and it gave these players the opportunity to showcase their skills and they were both playing what i would say was pretty much at the top of their games today great hughes roy third eagle the day.

"I don't know what that was margaret groups quickly and gets ready to go she'll be good whole location for him he likes to drop it in there to the right and that's what he's trying to do here but it's just a smidge too far left that was probably a step too far left it landed whole high left at about fifteen feet and it curls left and he's down there were patrick reid is to on the green though at sixteen bob they're sixteen you either hit it within ten or twelve feet of the hole you miss it to the right or you hit it down there where they are thirty five or forty feet that's your three options and how about the serenade for patrick is he walks in green at sixteen and charlie how dialed in is patrick reed we saw up close now monitor as he hit that tee shot at sixteen he was mouthing go in go in he had it right online just needed a half club more he is in the zone there's no doubt about that he does play well with emotion exactly like brian catering just described some people don't play well with all that emotion they try to ignore it get away from it but for patrick reed he really tends to thrive on it and if you could go back and look at his history he's always been a golfer that played with anger played with a chip on his shoulder played like he was trying to prove something and he has been proven in his career to this point with the five pga tour wins and this is the last piece of the puzzle breaking through one in that first major championship and i think his game is suited to the task charlie in any sport you know people say well so and so is not far enough for so and so is to emotional and all it is is being true to what you are you can't be what you're not a man you cannot hide on this stage you have to be who you are and that's a problem when people come out and they try to be somebody else or someone else if you look at you know quite a few of them members of the world golf all the fame the one thing they have in common is that they're all different they're all comfortable in their own skin whatever that.
