"The airplane are alive in pretty good condition. There were some minor injuries, but not life threatening injuries. Do you think that plane will be flyable again, Jeff? I don't know what you can see there. It looks pretty. It looks pretty total to me. I don't know, maybe somebody out there that has more experience with that kind of thing can let us know whether they believe that this thing is going to be fixable and flyable again, but it looks pretty bad shape to me. I think the whole engine was ripped off from the firewall on the airplane there. That's not good. But you can't really see in these pictures. No. And then let's play a little bit of the 9-1-1 call that the pilot. What's his name again? Patrick Merkel made to Montgomery county 9-1-1. What's the address of the emergency? I've flown into a tower to the northwest of Jesus bird airport. It's one of the electrical towers and believe it or not, the aircraft is pinned in the tower. And I don't know how long we're going to be able to stay here and I don't know. Yeah, I'm the pilot. Okay. Stay on the line with me. Okay. And you said it's the northwest part of the airport? That's correct. We're northwest of geckos Kurt. And you said that your ten, we are in the tower. We are still in the plane. And we are in a now we've got a light that's coming at us. And if they can get a ladder truck up here, I don't know if it can reach this high. I don't know. I'm very concerned about my passengers. He was hurt. How many people are on board? We have two people on board. I've got I think we got head injuries from being banged around in the cockpit. Okay. The other person awakened breathing? Yes. I'm just going to stay on the line with you in the meantime, okay? Well, that's fine. I'm just concerned about our articulation and the possibility that we could slip out of this tower and go tell first to the ground and that would not be a survivable business. And you do see the fire trucks in the police department, they're correct? Yes. They're working on everything and getting up to you guys, okay? I have a bloody nose and I have a I also have a little scrape on the left side of my head. Here's what I'm worried about. We're getting some serious wind. Are they doing anything yet? They're working on getting up to you guys. I know I keep on telling you that.

"Desk. His wired by IBW local 26, where electrical contractors come to grow. Good morning, I'm Deborah Feinstein. And I'm more Lewis. My cicadas is our producer. The top story we're following for you today, a preliminary report, is out on that small plane crash into a power transmission tower in Montgomery county more than a week ago. The national transportation safety board finds that the pilot did not follow guidance from air traffic controllers. The report says the pilot Patrick Merkel preferred a different approach to the Montgomery air park than what the air traffic controllers were advising. In addition, the plane was flying too low with rainy foggy conditions and limited visibility. WTO's Dan Ronan is a transportation expert who also holds a commercial pilot's license. He says weather conditions that night required pilots to fly exclusively with the use of instruments. In an instrument conditions, as challenging as they were the other night, there's just no room for air. You've got to be at the altitude that the FAA wants you at. You don't have any other choice. Well, after that plane crashed into the tower, the pilot and passenger were trapped 100 feet above the ground and dangled there in that plane for nearly 7 hours until they were rescued. When you take a ride on metro rail, the train is driven by a rail operator. But the transit agency is hoping to bring back its automated system. Since the red line crash at fort Todd and in 2009 that killed 9 people, metro's train operators have manually stopped and started trains. If the Washington metro rail safety commission approves, metro would return to an automated system for train operation and the opening and closing of doors. Metro says it has addressed the safety concerns following that 2009 crash and automation would make things safer now. If approved metro plans to begin testing of the automated system on the red line, next fall. It is election day yet again in Georgia today in a runoff between incumbent democratic senator Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker. Here's

"1 22 in the morning TLP welcome in. A miracle, that is what a D.C. pilot is now saying about his survival after being rescued recently from his plane that crashed into an electric transmission tower locally in Gaithersburg. He's unlike barilla was able to talk with at Merkel about the harrowing experience he went through. This pilot 65 year old Patrick Merkel, he was at the end of a day trip to New York with a friend, so he's heading back home as friend Jan Williams in the passenger seat. They were not far from Montgomery county air park. The airport there in Gaithersburg, when he says, while coming in using instrument landing, system on the plane, they're going through clouds, and they wound up flying too low. And then they first hit a set of transmission lines. They hit those and then became lodged in another tower holding another set of wires, Merkel telling me that when he was stuck up there, you remember the pictures when he was stuck up there. He remembers thinking. For the first couple hours, I wasn't sure that came on that tower was going to work very concerned that we might be sliding off the tower and to our deaths, actually. But with every passing hour, my confidence in the miraculous placement of the airplane in the tower was increased to the point that I no longer worried about whether we were going to come off the tower. Now, we heard him talking to 9-1-1 operators during now. We got those tapes the other day that you heard here on WTO. But more of what was going on in the cockpit at the time. He says they kicked out the front window of the plane, removed part of the dashboard. So if that plane started moving and going backwards, they could try to get out onto that transmission tower. He also said that he was reaching his hand out. If you remember the pictures, he had his hand out of one of the windows. He was touching the tower. So he could feel any movement so he could say, let's try to get out of here. This, of course, going on while an amazing rescue mission was unfolding below them. Mike at the time we learned that both the pilot and his passenger were seriously injured. How are they? Both had head injuries, Merkel, had a gash on his forehead lost about two pints of blood while up there. But he's okay. He's out of the hospital, and so is Williams. She had similar injuries, some broken ribs in addition to all that. But miraculous is how he describes that they both survive this and that he was able to talk to me about surviving this. "News. We're also hearing from the pilot this week. Clouds and bam. We hit a tower. Early on after the crash 65 year old Patrick Merkel tells WTO he was concerned. We might be sliding off the tower and to our deaths. He says it's a miracle how they hit the tower. If we had touched live wires with the wings, we would have short circuited 40,000 volts and had an explosive eruption of the fuel tanks that never happened and in a precision operation that lasted several hours they were rescued. I'm very grateful that we were safe. Both he and his passenger Jane Williams had injuries to their head. She also had broken ribs, they were both out of the hospital and very thankful to all those who helped including. A huge swath of Montgomery county. Which went without power during their rescue, Mike Murillo WTO news. Double DT will be used time at 1223. There is a potential breakthrough this week for the millions of Americans affected by Alzheimer's disease, and experimental antibody treatment developed by Biogen and its Japanese partner has barely been shown to slow down the progression of cognitive decline in a study of nearly 1800 different people this morning. CBS News medical contributor doctor David Akers joins us with more on the findings and what they actually mean. It was a lot of hope placed on this drug because it is such a devastating disease. And so in this trial, half got placebo and half got an antibody infused every two weeks. And what it showed is that nobody improved, but the rate of decline slightly decreased in the people who got the antibody treatment, but a cost of significant side effects, including brain bleed and brain swelling in the individuals who got the treatment. And so minor benefit, so small that most of the doctors and the patients were the founders couldn't really tell that the rate of decline had changed. But there was that real benefit there. So a glimmer of hope, but certainly not going to change the course of this disease in a big schema. So ultimately, people hearing this, they want to know would this help my family member do the benefits outweigh the risks or is this the first step toward the next thing where the benefits may be greater than this one? You hit the key question in the beginning of January, the FDA will review this. My gut is, is that the benefits do not outweigh the risk, but this is a step toward trying to show that if you remove these plaques, which this drug clearly did and did well, that there may be some benefit if we could do it safer and better. So I do think it's a step, but it's not something that's going to dramatically change the course of the disease, unfortunately. Why is Alzheimer's such a difficult disease, much like cancer to come back? Why is it elusive for scientists? Well, we don't even know how the brain works, right? I can't tell you how your thoughts work, how your emotions work. And so to develop treatments for a system that we don't understand is very difficult. And then you couple that is that it's a very slow disease. And by the time people are symptomatic, many times there's a lot of pathology in the brain. So we're not hitting it early. And so, you know, and slow diseases, trials are hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars and require thousands of patients. So is there the reason for capital risk for companies to put a lot of the Alzheimer's? Historically, they've shied away from it because of the resources required. I think we as the federal government and the United States need to take a step here just like we have a cancer moonshot. I do think we're going to need to do an Alzheimer's moonshot to team up with researchers, investigators, companies around the country together to make an impact on this disease. We need it

"Investigators are looking into why a small plane crashed in Maryland on Sunday.
