"We actually went to Walmart the other day. And we just Austin ran into China, walk without a mess and I'm like, what do you need doing? Just do it just where the? The stop them at the door give him a mass. Just where your mass to. Say. About that process. But my point, I'm trying to say some timeout the NFL. The NFL has pushed the opt out period to Thursday at four PM. Now, it was obvious. It was actually a pushed up to Tuesday or Wednesday. And then according from, Patriots, came out and said. Privilege called the NFL rushing us to do this. This is the thing. The NFL is a business. Okay. The NFL is just trying to figure out who is it? WHO's not? And I'm less and I get when this first came out I'm thinking myself. What the heck is the NFL doing they are making these guys decide. Obviously there's been so many players show fight about deller forty, three, forty, five players have opted out of the season so far eight from the New England patriots. So I, understand what according to saying, why forcing us to do this Today. This is business. A have guidelines in place at the facilities at the buildings that were at the compounds to make sure. To try Insures excuse me. That, we are minimizing positive tests that if everyone does their part. We should not have any more tests. Positive cases but some players still do do or do not feel safe Patrick Mahomes came out and said, he feels a lot better with what the NFL is put in place. Obviously his name, his opinion can carry a lot of weight. For other players. But there are still plays out there saying forget it. I'm not GONNA do it. And now with the deadline? At four PM. Is Actually what I'm very curious about. What. Happens if someone does after the this deadline do they face? Permits. Do they actually just say we're not GONNA pay your one fifty. Is that what happens? As of right now, I'm not seeing anything on there.

"And thank you so much for joining us seven am on the east coast this. Get up I'm Ryan Smith in for my Greenberg, and we will be with you for the next two hours with a lot to cover from the weekend, especially from the world of the NFL, because believe it or not, we're just fifty two days away from the Super Bowl champion chiefs, and the Houston Texans opening the NFL regular season as rookies from both of those teams will be the first players to report to training camps today, but a big development yesterday of NFL players took to twitter. Twitter yesterday to voice their concerns about the safety protocols put in place or lack thereof chiefs quarterback Patrick mahomes. Said this getting ready to report this week hoping the NFL will come to agreement with the safe and right protocols, so we can feel protected playing the sport. We Love Hashtag. We WanNA play. The saints drew brees. We need football. We need sports. We need hope, but the NFL's unwillingness to follow the recommendations of their own medical experts will prevent that if the NFL doesn't do their part to keep players healthy, there is no football in twenty twenty. It's that simple. Get it done NFL and seahawks. Russell. Wilson I am concerned. My wife is pregnant. NFL training camp is about to start, and there is still no clear plan on player, health and family safety. We want to play but football, but we also want to protect our loved ones again Hashtag, we wanNA play over the weekend NFL PA Vice President Sam. Acho gave this recommendation. If safety plans are not in place. The recommendations for some of the rookies, and also some of the players is to report right now we have a week until all the other ninety gas or supposed to report, and so as of now we're telling players get ready and stay ready, but if the NFL doesn't come up with these plans, you cannot show up.

Where did you take the leak to become an investor in a successful investor along the way with so many things were going on your life. Well, I've always I've always loved numbers. Um Matt has always been a favorite of my math and science for my two favorite subjects. I've always loved numbers and then back and actually back in 1985 when I got hurt. Um, actually, 1984 when I signed what was at that time, one of the biggest contracts in football, it was love this I was, I think, the fourth highest a player in the National Football League in $1984 million a year. Now put that into context. Patrick Mahomes just bought a piece of the Kansas City Royals something that facility in dollars contract and I think it's great. I'm throat for the kids. Don't get whatever you could get. But when? When I sat down with Mr Cook, and I asked about Mr Cook, now that you've given me an opportunity to make this money No. What do I do with this? She said. Joe don't ever be afraid to take a profit, no matter how big or small it is, but you always want to finish on the upside of the percent. And I've sort of taken that in mind. And this is the thing that I've come to learn about investing is, if you want to be successful at anything, talk to people that are successful, I read What Warren Buffett has to say. I read different. I studied different stocks. I study different companies. Why? Why is this company doing something? Why's that company's doing something? What could be the next trend going forward? "You guys care about Madden. We talked about it earlier. That Harrison Smith is the number. One ranked safety this year in Madden, but he was a ninety, five, ninety five I believe Madden's released almost all of the rankings. Now I think they've gone through almost everybody. Adam Schefter tweeted out the ninety nine clubs so far. Here are year ninety nine, which is the highest scored madden. For Twenty twenty. Wide Receiver Michael Thomas. Of The Orleans. Saints Chiefs quarterback Patrick. Mahomes K.. Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey. Rams Defensive Tackle Donald his fourth straight. Yeah of ninety nine. Cowboys' Prescott doesn't get deal to replace franchise tag
"Not Deal for. Prescott and the cowboys could not agree to terms on a deal that would have the quarterback between thirty three and thirty five million dollars annually with a hundred and ten million of that guaranteed. So Daf will now play this season on the thirty one point four million dollar franchise tag. He will once again on himself this season if there were reports that the two sides were close, they clearly were not close enough. WHO's more likely to regret? Not Getting a deal done deaf Prescott or the Dallas Cowboys. I'm going to say. Despite the fact that I believe is going to end up the highest paid player than Patrick Mahomes in NFL, history I Dak is going to get the money that he ultimately wanted I think he's going to be franchise tag this year franchise tag next year and then hit open free agency. But here for deck that in the in the pursuit of that money, he's going to become an athlete that I. Don't think any athlete wants to be which is your name is not your name anymore? It's not Dak. Prescott is having a Joe Johnson Joe. Johnson stopped being Joe Johnson. He started being Joe Contract because no matter how good he was, he was never going to be able to live up to that contract. And I think Jack is setting himself up to be a little bit richer than he otherwise would be. Be a guy who can never live up to that contract, and the reason I think Dallas is not gonNA regret this, even if they back on the quarterback treadmill is because the the worst thing you can have in this league. Wild does not have a quarterback. The worst thing you can have is a vastly overpaid quarterback. If you don't have a quarterback and find a new one, you can go try to find one if you have a vastly overpaid quarterback. You're just stuck and so I think Jack is going to get what he thinks he wants in this the most money in. Have ever gotten aside from Mahomes I. Think he will end up regretting it because you have a great organization, you have great skill, position guys, and if he would've just signed for Carson, Wentz plus ten percent, no one would've held it against him, and instead this contract and the negotiations around at wild. You're going to be the narrative surrounding him for years to come. See I disagree. You think that it's it's. I think the worst thing to have is a mediocre quarterback. Any shot at the super. Bowl and I'm GONNA throw to a clip of Darren Woodson in a second, but I think in our minds if it's been glossed over that, it was troy and then Tony, but there was a the drew bledsoe Weirdo error there that they were in a bad spot. If we can take a listen a Darren Woodson please hubs. In, the world when you have quarterback purgatory. Where you can. You're not good at that position. That position is holding you back from winning games, and there was a time before Tony Romo era. Where there were four years, we went five and eleven. In a week, totally struggled at that one position in in today's game that one position is means a ton means wins and losses gotta get you over the Hump in when you don't have that Clare in that position. It's a huge struggle. I'm. So. Bryan. I think this eventually gets done I. Don't know if he gets franchise again. I think that we just moved the goalposts and a long-term deals going to get done. They like each other. Dak wanted for the cowboys wanted five I. Don't think the answer is. Let's get divorced just because we can't agree. I think this eventually get works gets worked out and I. Don't think anyone has any regrets long-term. The cowboys ended up regretted. Just a bit because I think that goes out and has a very good year. This season with Mike McCarthy Mike McCarthy comes back in after winning a playoff game or two, and says we need to have Dak back now. The cowboys have to pay him that long term contract, which is going to be a little bit more than they would have had to pay him this year. Here's the question that I've always had. If if the cowboys don't love, why would they ever want to sign him to a five year deal versus the forty deal if you don't love them then? On to a four year deal, you can get rid of him quicker. Why would you want WanNa longer contract if you don't love him, and you don't know exactly what he is for your football team to me I think they know who back is they just don't WanNa, pay him because they see him as a fourth round pick. A guy that has played well in this career hasn't quite got over the Hump. I don't think they want to pay him if I'm back Prescott I, feel like I'm in a great position to meet the floor. The absolute four is thirty three to thirty five million dollar contract that you can get from some other team after the season. If things don't work out for you here in Dallas, I think a team like Jacksonville. Teams that would need a quarterback was still need a quarterback next year and would be that open market possibly if he doesn't give franchise in the floor to his contract would be that deal that he turned down this season from the cowboys.
Kansas City Chiefs, Pro Bowler Chris Jones agree to four-year extension ahead of franchise-tag deadline

Patrick Mahomes agrees 10-year deal with Chiefs worth $503m
"One of the huge headlines this week was the decade long contract that Patrick Mahomes lands in Kansas City. Will we see a ripple effect from that? Will that affect a deal for Dak Prescott? ESPN is Jeff Darlington. Will you know what? In some circumstances, I could have seen Mahomes getting a contract and maybe influencing the Doc Prescott deal, But the way it worked out, it actually won't know. I had spoken to some people before the homes got his deal done, And they implied that it Patrick Mahomes is in a little bit of a different air, No matter what. Um, Any quarterback that was coming up on his contract was not going to be able to demand that kind of money. The other situation here is that The home's ended up doing a 10 year deal. The contention between Dak Prescott the Cowboys the deck once less years, then the Cowboys willing TTO. Do they want to get five years? Dad wants to get four years. As a result, I think that the better calm pier is not Patrick Mahomes, but it's still Kirk cousins from a few years ago. Prescott now basically threatening to plan to the franchise tag and saying, If you don't pay me now, my price is only going to go higher. So this week will be very interesting. I still contend they going to get something done by July 15th. We'll have to wait and see those relationships take time, though. Nobody is patients in the NFL's. So what are you hearing about the relationship between deck and his new head coach Mike McCarthy. Look, everybody sees this as being really an ideal relationship. Personality wise, they really do meld quite nicely together, Doc, one of the most likeable one of the most enjoyable people to be around Like McCarthy, also the type of guy you can come in there and really work with Jack to a degree. Actually, I know the Cowboys fans don't want to hear this. But the relationship that Jason Garrett had with Jack I don't think it'll be that much different between these guys. And that actually is a good thing despite the outcome of Jason Garrett success, so Ah, lot of people expect this to be a really good relationship. I could, by the way, seeing This relationship prosper this year to the point where Doc next year winds up if he doesn't sign the deal now signs it later so that he can keep that marriage with McCarthy going
"patrick mahomes" Discussed on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
"Mr Bill Barnwell himself and Bill I wanted to have you on today. Because I thought no one, did a better job breaking down Patrick mahomes making half a billy, at least that was the headline, but when you started diving into this deal with him and the chiefs that was record-breaking. What ultimately does this? Deal. Look like and how's it going to change the league? Yeah I mean you know it's GonNa be a lot of money like that. Let's let's leave that part of. He's going to get rich one way or another. I think he's GonNa make. A million dollars over the next twelve years. Just don't think it's going to be totally under this deal. It's really kind of two separate six year contracts six year, one hundred eighty million dollar deal in that range, and then six years for the rest, which is about three hundred twenty million dollars, or so so I think because of the structure of the deal. Deal because of the way that the money is guaranteed I think it's likely, but after six years the two sides go back to the table and say hey, you know. He might be a bargain at that point, even though he's making fifty million dollars a year, so I think they're going to go back and restructure maybe a year or two. You know just. Just, Kinda make it a different sort of contract so I don't think he's going to be sitting here for twelve years on this contract, but he's GonNa make a ton of money whether it's five hundred, fifty, six, hundred was going to be making more than a half billion dollars over the next twelve years. If he stays healthy and I think I don't know. Know what you guys think boy I write about this contract. I started thinking okay well. Is there anybody else in the NFL? Who could justify this sort of contract? And my answer was? No, I don't think there's anybody else who could sit here and ask the sort of deal who I'd feel good about handing the same sort of contract which speaks to. How little it might change in some ways, but also just how uniquely Special Patrick Mahomes is now. What about Lamar Jackson? If Lamar Jackson has the season like Patrick Mahomes Patrick Mahomes had a great year. They ended up not winning the super. Bowl comes back. He wins it if Lamar. Jackson takes the Ravens. The Super Bowl in wins it. Could we not see Lamar cash in on a deal? I mean if you want to, you know. I think if that happens any wants it i. don't see how the Ravens would say no I couldn't fault them for giving him an contract. He's an incredible player. I think he's so smart with how he uses his body to keep himself healthy. He gets out of balance doesn't take necessary hits, but he's still running quarterback. He's still gonNA take. Its than you know, Patrick mahomes would or to Shawn Watson would or You know I any of the guys who really you know are not running as frequently. Ask Lamar does and I. think that's you know I think he's a great pocket passer I think he can be that guy. You know being effective guy if he's not running much, he does, but I think the offense. He's in calls for him to do that, so you know. Would I be uncomfortable with the Ravens giving Lamar Jackson the same amount of money on a yearly basis, not a lot. I think yes I totally fine, but. Would I want guarantee him money ten years now I'd be a little nervous and I think nothing against Lamar Jackson. It's just the nature of being a running quarterback in the. NFL is different than being back from homes. Who is a guy who occasionally runs? But it's really more of a you know a passer. Mentioned to Shawn Watson. Take this up further. How does mahomes his contract impact Dak Prescott and Watson moving forward? I don't think it does that much. Because those guys both lunch shorter contracts really want a three year extension Maybe a four year deal you know. Maybe we'll get a five year deal. It's hard to say they want. They don't want a ten year contract or a twelve year contract. So you look at the money. Patrick Mahomes is making over the first five years of this deal. It's about a hundred forty million dollars somewhere in the twenty eight million dollar a year range which. Dak Prescott is going to get more than that that. I got was already expecting against somewhere around thirty, four or thirty five million dollars a year so. You know I don't think it's really gonNA end up being comparable because you know, I don't think the cowboys will sit here and say hey, let's pay less money. Because Patrick Mahomes took less money front because he's getting so much guaranteed down the line and from dockside. He doesn't really have that desire to get the same sort of length contracts so You know I think if anything it's sort of help. Those teams because patch roles are taking a three year deal for a massive amount of money that would have been a much more direct comparable than the deal. He actually ended up getting sir. So how does this affect Chris Jones and what? He wants to accomplish in his deal. Yeah this actually a really good thing for the chiefs, because they did not change the cap situation at all by signing this extension for the next two years Patrick. mahomes has pretty much identical cap. That's what he would have had if they had not signed him to an extension and twenty twenty and twenty twenty one so now, if the Chiefs Twenty Gay Chris Jones deal done, they can do it they. They can't afford it on their cap over the next couple years. Depending on how they structure it if they wanNA resigned Travis Kelsey WHO's coming out for free agency. They can do that and get that without having to worry about impacting their cap so because they were willing to guarantee so much money down the line, they were able to get pretty friendly terms over the next three years really..
Chiefs lock up Patrick Mahomes through 2031 with massive extension
"For Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl MVP and now locked up under contract with the Chiefs for years and years to come. He's only 24 years old, and he's already won a Super Bowl and is considered an elite. NFL quarterback thoughts on the big deal from the man himself. Obviously, I want security to take care of my family and my and my future generations of family. I also wanted to keep really good football players around me. I mean, I'm not gonna sit here and lie and say that I have a great football team around me. Doesn't help help me when I'm on the field on. So I wanted to find the best way that I could do that. And I feel like as we talk to me and as crazy Chris and and all these guy, Chris Meijin and all these guys talked that they came to me with this. This idea in this concept of Of obviously making me financially secure. But having the ability to go out sign these recent all these guys and like we were returning 20 or 21 of 22 starters, I knew that this was the way that was going to the right way to do it where we can accomplish boats, those things that are so important to me. And, of course, having Patrick Mahomes locked up under a nice contract is also a good deal for his head coach of the chief's Andy Reid. I'm so happy for for Pat for the Can study chief's organization on daily for the city of Kansas City for having this opportunity to have Ah True franchise quarterback here in Kansas City, one that was drafted here, which hasn't happened for almost the duration of the chief's organization. It's stuff homes under contract with the Chiefs. Now from 2031 keep healthy, keeping healthy. That's the you
Mahomes' big bet on football pays off with $503 million deal
"Start off the show with the conversation that really dominated the Monday edition of the Zack Help show on CBS Sports Radio. And that was the breaking news of Patrick Mahomes inking a 10 year deal. $503 million contract What it is worth up to, and that's the news that has really rocked the sports world and hit the sports world since the week did commands only two days into the week, and when I look back at this Mahomes deal And I think he's 100% worth it. I know some are going to be even with this talent, skeptical of giving any player a 10 year deal truly a 12 year deal because of the two years that are still currently on his contract. I look at Patrick Mahomes, though, And this was evident to May after his first full season in the National Football League that not only was he the best quarterback in all of football, but he was the best player in all of football and even look at last year. All the adversity that was thrown in front of him. You had a knee injury. Then you're down 24 points in the divisional round. You're down 10 points in the FC championship game, and you're down 10 points in a Super Bowl with only 7.5 to go. Think about that for a second. Look out how much was working against them? Look how much were working against the team a lot of it their own fault. Because they were the team that went down 24 then 10 and 10 as well. And even with all that it shows you how great Mahomes is because Mahomes was able to dig himself into a deep hole, and he was able to find the way against all odds because of his talent to back himself out of it. Now It's not only him. You need playmakers around you. You need a good coach. And you need a defense that in the second half of the season, that defense really did step up. The game where my home's got hurt. I think they were playing the Broncos. I could be wrong on that. But whoever they were playing that night, I remember talking to Steve Spagnola after they won the Super Bowl inspect set on the show. It was that night where Mahomes got hurt. That was the turning point for the defense this year with the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Front office just came in. and asked for bottles of Dom and said there was a signing to celebrate, and she said I think it's Patrick Mahomes on twitter. She said that. Scoop, schefter. Awesome. If. You're Kansas City you don't feel some type of way. You do all those steps again. Because the patch. Mahal is going to a deal with a no trade clause for ten years. You Hurry up the SINUS. Celebrate as much as you. As a matter of fact, give her season tickets. Animal Homes Jersey because she was a part of the good luck, because she didn't do anything within two hours. That could have ruined it of blew up the deal. I also want to say this. We've said this times dozens of times. We said this on this show. Champions overrated. Hiccup Burn. Can't drink. That much gets you. It gives you a headache. Campaigns overrated I'll be like. Let's just give me give me some of that Coral Tequila that we got. A smooth I'll take a nice. On the rocks over a couple of glasses of champagne. Symbolism. If there's a symbolism to raise a glass of Champagne I. Get midnight on New Year's. You take a SIP champagne, the put back down and get back to your cocktails. But, still no, thank you I'll pass them champagne. You can ask them only reason. It makes sense why they wanNA championship like Champagne. That's why you you actually. Series against the Pacers again against. Them Champagne. You saw me out. They're shooting.

"Enemy what happens with him knicks. Year deal at Andy Reid Age. Dues does he turn over the team him in three seasons? If I'm the enemy I, stay right there so i. want to be the person to put this on wax. Not only do. They have their head coach. They have their next head coach along with the quarterback. All of those weapons you just put up on the screen, and by the way the guaranteed money Jacobin Patrick Mahomes. NBA. If. He's if he eight. Average per year. All of a sudden the quarterback position this becomes a game changer because above, average, forty, five, the biggest number, five hundred and the lengthy number ten years. Dole's are the things that make it game changing as we move forward to see, high affects other quarterbacks employers moving forward. And he deserves this. He absolutely deserves this. He is the most exciting young quarterback arguably Lamar Jackson, but one of the things about this is you get this kind of ten year deal when you just won the Super Bowl, because if you remember this was a close Super Bowl Patrick. Mahomes got ball, told his teammates. Here and then did exactly that this is a fourth and fifteenth. If this is not a completion. This win the Super Bowl. He doesn't get this kind of money. So after you perform like that in the super bowl on that stage, a kiss, Lombardi trophy. That's when you go to the negotiating table and say ten years over four hundred million dollars, and they're say fine, you go. Here's the deal. What an amazing amazing job that they have! An individual player. Also. While forty plus million people have filed for unemployment. We're dealing in a pandemic with the corona. Various in companies are laying off people and furloughing people. You Tobacco land back you trying to go in and get a deal. You know what the company's telling you oh. We don't have the money. We're trying to figure it out. And then all of a session. Patrick mahomes comes in China. Say Him you find a way to figure it out just. Built everybody out. Half a billion. Here's another question. This doesn't just benefit the mahomes family. WHO's going to be set for quite some time? This also benefits some others waiting to get their contracts. People like Dak Prescott. You'd like to Shawn Watson in a couple of years Lamar Jackson. What do you think they're on the phone telling their? Right now. They like good looking. That day on the phone with their agents, they patch mahomes. That's what they're doing because in theory. He set the bar at three different ways Jacoby. That's what I mean. You could be one of those guys and be Dacca's and say, or you can be Lamar. For the years you know morning to three or four years or they? Could be like I wanna go for average. You know you could be a guy like the Shawn Watson. His situation is like y'all got to give me the years. Average. Or mouth because I normal franchise quarterback, so it's GonNa. Be Interesting to see how it progresses moving forward, but you will be seeing players as this deal age actually at some point, make more than he's making. That's just how this works. We will see. There has been about four or five other contracts in the history of the NFL that have been this length of all of those most have been quarterbacks. If not all none of those finish their career on that team, we will see if Patrick. Mahomes is different. Well one player that's not going to finish his season on his team's a gentleman by the name of Bradley Beal has announced that he will not be going to Orlando to play the bubble. He said at a shoulder injury. Jalen, one thing I've noticed. Is that players on teams that don't have legitimate chances going? Much more likely to have little injuries that keep them out of the bubble. What do you think? When you in essential worker, you need to pay all your bills. You take more chances going to work. If you have a nest egg into money in the bank and you still get unemployment. You consider whether you want to go to work enough. In Bradley beal averaged almost thirty this year dealing with a shoulder issue, they won't have John Wall is just not in his long term. Best interest of being Orlando Plan basketball in the. Well another player that would not be joining. The bubble will join a lot of his teammates. Not Coming to the bubble netted Spencer, Dinwiddie who was on the fence earlier. He is now announced that he is not going to Orlando. The Nets have committed as a franchise to field a team in Orlando. Is it at this point as I? Said earlier the maybe they shouldn't.

A Turning Point: Race Relations In Sports
"It has now been more than four weeks in George. Floyd was murdered nearly a month since we all watched him. Take his last breaths. It feels like so much is different, but real actionable change that takes time. Many who took to the streets in protests have now resumed their daily lives, so now seems appropriate to discuss how sport will handle affairs moving forward. As North American teams and Leagues Continue Their Return to play processes. It is vital that the conversations and promises made when the racial issue was hottest that they do not go away. In a few moments, we will welcome in our panel to discuss how that should happen, but first a look at how we got here in the first place. He will have color have been argued about beliefs, and that's not right. That's not right by any was standards. The point he was making gut twisted from the start. The beginning when Colin Kaepernick I made is public protests peacefully heap I sat on the bench during the national anthem to bring awareness. There's a lot of things that need to change once one specifically police brutality. There's people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable. It was the summer of two thousand sixteen, when he bursts truly used his platform as an NFL quarterback to speak out against systemic racism by police in the weeks leading into that preseason payment. San Francisco capper Nick had watched. We all had. To white officers pinning down Alton Sterling. And pumping. into his chest and back. He saw the traffic stop in Minnesota when Philander Casteel was killed in front of his girlfriend in charge. And captured it could not understand how mental health therapist Charles Kinsey could be shot by police when he was lying on the ground with his arms up in the air, people of color have been targeted by police. Cops are getting paid leave. For killing people. That's not right. That's not right by anyone's standards. And yet from the beginning law in. pre-game gesture was misrepresented and downright manipulated. The Christ came that he was disrespecting the flag that it was a slap in the face to military personnel. But when active soldiers pointed out, they serve to provide their citizens with the freedom of speech that capture nick was exercising. That narrative quickly was quashed when army veterans who had been in battle, echoed that very sentiment out of national football league buildings team needs I would be disappointed if any of our players didn't stand up for the national anthem personally. I, look at that as a salute to the people who have paved the way for us. Our Organization believes that. You should. Respect the flag and so you'll save those individual decisions to expression show. On individual form. And that became the prevalent message. Don't do it here. Stick to sports. The underlying tone. How dare you protest without our approval we're. Do you get off? Colin Kaepernick criticizing anyone in another uniform. Right the men and women lead for this, I- scenic. First hand. For. Somebody do that to get paid millions of dollars. It's ridiculous. Cabinet remained undeterred. United States Army Bet. Nate! Boyer who did tours of duty in Iraq, and Afghanistan encouraged him to kneel and not sit. By, taking a knee voyeur told him you show your respect for fallen brothers that way. So capture nick did. And then more NFL players followed. And yet the public and political conversation in the US would not steer toward police brutality. No matter how much star athletes peacefully attempted to. And the leader in America's biggest chair. Amy Shirley Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners? When somebody disrespects our flag to say, get that son of a job appealed right now out each fire. I! Capture Nick became a source of division for standing up against injustice. He hasn't taken a snap since that twenty sixteen season. And at this year Super Bowl USA. Today's jared bell minced no words on why that is I. Think it's pretty obvious. He's been blackballed for Colin Kaepernick not to have a job is just. It's the worst look for the NFL. No conversation was more dominant inside NFL. Locker rooms that season than the Kapernick one teams are made up of players of all ages of all backgrounds of so many ethnicities. If you actually want to listen to different perspectives. If you're an athlete who would want to hear what your peers had to say, there would be no shortage of takes to soak in. But fundamentally the want would be to understand capper knicks fundamental point. After George Floyd one of the League's biggest stars reminded us that many still didn't I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country. Maybe that was the crossroads moment because the reaction to. It felt like something had changed almost as. That won't cut. It anymore drew. brees in the rest of the NFL were told right away, the new. Orleans quarterback came under fire. The players in the league had just about enough of the establishment silence. They had captured message. They were not gonNA. Let owners and Roger Goodell get away with it this time. Would have other Jewish Knowledge George if I was. I was George Void. Jewish. And say hi in. Regard. To me right. Breezes all pro receiver found Dallas's bruising runner and Houston's electrifying quarterback, and Kansas City Super Bowl Mvp. And Obi. And they all let you know. We. Condemn Racism and assistant. Matic oppression of black people. National League, admit wrong and silence our players from protesting. Also. Black lives matter black lives matter. Like loves. To Have Patrick Mahomes the next superstar the NFL. Front and center. That was massive. And the very next night the commissioner uttered the words you never imagined would happen. We the National Football League Immune. We were wrong for not listening NFL players earlier. And encourage all speak out in peacefully protests. Read the National Football League believe black lives matter. Progress. Probably a step forward. You want to believe so. The day after the commissioner changed his tune, breeze went to social media again. He'd already made his hollow apologies without actually saying sorry, and he finally seemed to be listening to what some teammates had to say, and after all of that even drew brees somewhat stood up to the president. It won't Change Donald Trump of course, but maybe it will make others think. Perhaps it will create more uncomfortable conversations to allow for a greater understanding among all of us. And at the very least it has given others throughout sport. To have the freedom to finally say their piece open believing they may at last be heard. Or country is in, trouble. Basic reason is race. You're seeing an example of future. That's fighting for you for you. Right now a fine for you got a grandfather that march legs. Dr King in the sixties. And he was amazing. You'll be proud to see us all. Got Pushing? Forward Doing Casey marched with his family. Members of Detroit's organization. An NBA coach using his voice. Over in Jacksonville Jaguars personnel were among the demonstrators. North Philly's finest. He walked. Kyle Lowery's we can. Priorities were set. This though. This is just the start. To silence of countless elites spoken loud. Until you see action from an, don't forget by the leaks themselves. We wonder what the real commitment to progress actually is. What capper protests was about from. The beginning can no longer be debated. And it is now crystal clear to all of us that no athlete should just shut up and dribble. Nelson Mandela famously said. Sport has the power to change the world. Since George, Floyd perhaps we have learned that change can come more from our sporting icons using their voice platform in pursuit for justice than any jumper were swing. Or goal or touched them. Stick to sports. Sure let's stick to sports bettering the world in a new way. Let's start hearing the real message now. And most of all, let's not get the words and actions like Hafer. Knicks twisted. When he tried to begin the real conversation. Before US AGO!

"We Win Stadium you will be at home. I can promise you will feel you support. Stay safe. We are still with you and. You'll never walk alone. That was liberal F. C manager Jergen KLOPP in a message released yesterday. That will bring a tear, not just the eyes of his supporters. The dare I say anyone who cares about the most popular sports league in the world. That's right folks. After a three-month hiatus. The English Premier League is back today. Roger Bennett from men in blazers fills us in on these frantic few remaining weeks. So grab a pint and US as sub optimal tour of English soccer. I'm sorry, English football. I mean it comes. It's Wednesday. June seventeenth. This is ESPN daily. Presented by marathon. Roger! Kim's. Are you relieved? Roger Bennett is suffering bears fan. He's also the CO host of men in Blazers on the NBC. Sports Network and the men in Blazers podcast by just braced for him to end up with the green. Bay Packers, leading them on a fourth quarter drive two feet, my beloved Chicago Bears, and I can't wait for that movement. They'll probably deserve it. And we're not talking about bears football today. The wait is over the English premier league. The most Popular Sports League in the world is back after a one hundred day hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic Roger I'm sure you've been getting your fix from Bundesliga but I have to imagine the return of English. Soccer is hitting a little different for you. One hundred days feels like one hundred years to be candid. I've been staring at squirrels running up trees in the park, and feeling the adrenaline burst of a run through midfield, watching raindrops charge down my window and feeling just an incredible wing-play into play of missed from the primarily, but yes, it's back today with its global ratings I mean in Britain for much of Europe for much of the rest of the world outside of the United States, it's kind of a seismic as the NFL and the NBA rolled into with the Pantheon of heroes and villains to moments of glorious ecstasy, searing dispath fuse with dodgy haircuts snack tattoos. One hundred days off. When are going to have ninety two games scattered almost daily over the next couple of weeks. It's coming back because we love it because we miss it. It's coming back for. Hard news commercial reasons ultimately to an economic decision. It's going to come back and ghost game situation where it's fabulous. It's going to be different. The lack of an audience will have an impact on the football. We watched, but most importantly it is going to be good enough. It's GonNa. Be Great enough to connect us to a ruling global conversation and that's ultimately I think. Think we will miss about sports as our calling them. Ghost Games I hadn't heard that got left the Germans. They have a name for everything. Lay. They Call Them Guy Bela. And that is what they will be. Sam Darnold knows a thing or two about those back to English premier league, so we hit positive with most of the season done with exception of Liverpool they're. They're still to be decided. The top half of the table. Seven teams vying for five spots determine who will qualify for Champions League and Europa League which for those who don't know are the midseason European tournaments to be held next year. Roger Liverpool have clinched Champions League. Spot Manchester City has of course been banned from Champions League for Breaking Financial Fair play rules so that. That spot remains open despite city being second in the League. Right now. Arsenal wolves Chelsea Menu Lester Tottenham Sheffield all in the mix. What are you expecting to see from the top of the table? When the race for Champions League qualification, which is a bit like football's march madness, it's big tournament in which the best teams in the world. You're rail, Madrid, your boss Alana's. Para Sanjay Man's by Munich's compete all. Big English teams won't be in that for brand reasons for competitive reasons for commercial reasons and is. And completely wide open at the bottom of the table. All say English football has some Incorr- ellegation, which is if you watch game of thrones? It's a bit like the moon door. Teams get flung through that in baseball, the worst teams every year like the Orioles in the mall in which is flung out of the major leagues, the mooted, and in that place. We had the Tulsa drillers around rook. Rook Express and that is, it's a searing. It is a haunting. It is a savage palm of the global football tradition, and you have six teams at the bottom who are fighting to avoid what can be economically devastating their revenue roughly hauls flung out. The Premier League is savage for the fan base. One Minute. You are watching your team. Take to the glamorous fields, Manchester United and Arsenal the next. Round Brentford Luton Barnsley barring a miracle the Jewish using Norwich canaries will disappear, but there's five teams Aston. Villa Bouma th what furred and West Ham amongst them, two of which will go with them for the big story line. Meena is Liverpool Football Club. American owned little football. Club owned by the Boston Red SOx owners, F S J and their yearning. They're dreaming of a return to greatness that was once titletown by when I was a kid growing up in Liverpool. Just six points away from lending the title that they have dreamed of then. That is the great storyline of the season. On that note. This Sunday. The team that you root for I'm sorry. I'm getting a producer this side you support. Everton, we'll be squaring off against Liverpool. They are twenty five points clear off the other teams in the League, and there's possibility they can clinch the title at Goodison Park Against Your beloved Everton on Sunday

"Be in Kansas City. Kansas City was came out definitely showed the most interest On New that I WANNA DO Co. Tree until you get the best out of me every every single day but I. I knew that you never know what happens on draft night and so for me I was trying to enjoy the moment. Enjoy the Tyler family just enjoying join the draft as a win by obviously I worked out perfectly cassidy trading up to number ten in getting me and entrusted me to go out there and show them that. That was the right decision vision and it was a long drought process started off as a third round grade. I was getting by the at the Advisory Board and ended up getting drafted tiptoe girl you know. I will always think also as fortunate as you were to get drafted in Kansas City. And have Andy Reid there. I can't imagine go into a better situation. Shen than playing with Alex Smith for year and Andy told me after the championship game that that Alex Smith had texted him after the game. He said the kid played phenomenal. You know it's amazing. Think about it you know you basically and you chased aced Alex Smith out of town and he's still a fan of yours. It's it's a very very interesting scenario. Where a guy I kind of helped you take his job? Yeah I don't even know if you if you even have to a phrase like that I think to me and for it was that we have so much respect for each other. I saw him work as or gets day in and day out and if it wasn't him trying to help me take his job or anything anything like that but it was just m being who he was and at one the best seasons that quarterback in a long time of the NFL Passer Rating Led the team to the play US and do a lot of great things and for for him he was just being who he was and I was learning from him doing that and He's a he's a great human being. I still use a lot of the saying tips. Insane blueprint on how schedule my week. Based off what he did and what he does and it really has helped me build a blueprint for myself and and I mean he was someone that was truly impact.

"Entire conversation about twenty eight twenty nine minutes worth with Patrick. Mahomes the Super Bowl. Mvp I wrote about him in my column this week a week after the super bowl and I recorded our conversation to play on this podcast odd cast and you'll hear that coming up a couple of observations on Mahomes I think is you will hear in his you seen with him so far. He's twenty four years old. He's very careful and his he's not going to be a real colorful interview interview or anything like that. He's going to answer the questions as best he can without being Very controversial but I you'll learn a lot about his approach to this game and about how he was able to come back in the second half after a basically in the fourth quarter after really having a Lotta shaky moments in his first fifty minutes. So you'll learn Matt and I'll I'll also also just say that in advance of you listening to this. I think you will enjoy -joy how to me. Patrick mahomes raised because I think he had a dad who was very very a AH in tune with making sure that everything about his upbringing. If he was ever GonNa play sports he was going to understand. Understand what it took and what kind of person and competitor you need to be to really succeed in professional sports. So you'll hear about that. Helier some stories about the Sioux Falls canaries and and about Alex Rodriguez and things like that. So I hope you enjoy that conversation and we'll get to that in a minute but first I wanted to talk just for a few minutes about the XFL bill and what happened in the first weekend of the XFL. A little bit of history. I I was at the first game ever in XFL XFL history nineteen years ago. Obviously this is the second iteration of the XFL the first one which opened a much pomp and circumstance. At Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas in two thousand one. I was there covering the game for sports illustrated along with Leigh. Montville the legendary writer from Boston. And what I what I remember about that game and I'm going to tell. Oh you just a little bit about that just so that you understand and have a little bit of perspective about what we saw this past weekend. First of all that game at a college stadium in Las Vegas. There's thirty thousand people who came the late-arriving in crowd. A lot of people just got excited the last few minutes or the last few days leading up to the game and the the the Line Ryan of cars leading to Sam Boyd Stadium just before kick-off reminded me of the line of cars in field of dreams. Remember that you know where if you build it. They will come. And the line of cars leading to that field in Dyer's Ville Iowa Toward the end of that movie. That's what it was like that night in Vegas. Yo Vince. McMahon the wrestling IMPRESARIO and. NBC's Dick Ebersol were there Because this was going to be a Combo platter between the XFL and NBC. And that's really what this was to this. This was a this is a made for made for TV football league and that first weekend was really pretty amazing the XFL NFL had a crowd of thirty thousand in Vegas. They have thirty five thousand in Birmingham Alabama. They had thirty. Eight Thousand Rosen at then PAC bell park in San Francisco to see San Francisco and Los Angeles. Play a sell out in San Francisco Oh nfl city. And I I said wow this is this really has got a chance. The ratings were phenomenal. They did a ten point three rating seventeen seventeen share in the United States on the first night of the XFL. What's so amazing about that? I think is is that think about it that basically is the rating of a good regional Game in the NFL today so they they had got a lot of is on that first game and so let's fast forward to today and you know they had four games in this new iteration of the XFL. They all drew in the seventeen thousand range. None of them drew as many as twenty thousand Some of the stadiums. You know it's I think it's ridiculous for the New York franchise to be playing at metlife stadium in New Jersey. Just look like they didn't sell any tickets in the upper deck in the lower bowl it almost looked like just confetti being thrown it. Just it just didn't didn't look good. They'd be much better off playing their games at the Red Bulls Stadium in Harrison New Jersey. or or at a you know or at a say at rutgers or something like that because it just looks awful when you play a game at a giant stadium no pun intended attended here with this is obviously where the New York giants play so The crowds were modest but I thought the crowd at the Washington game. They played at Audi already stadium where the Washington. MLS team plays the soccer team and it looked great. It looked enthusiastic. It was eighty five percent. Full was a big excited crowd and look like a a cool atmosphere for a game But I just think that one of the things that really kind of hurts the TV product is when you're playing in a giant huge stadium radium and it looks like there's nobody there. That was my first observation. I think the second observation is that you have to ballistic. I actually think it's good that this integration of the of the XFL didn't have the TV crowds that they had nineteen years ago of the ESPN Rating of this game basically was that the crowd watching the the first game this weekend. Basically peaked at four million and averaged about three point. Three million. That's a nice ice crowd very nice. TV crowd to To have and I also think that certainty enthusiasm. The League on social. Media is good social media really didn't exist in two thousand one obviously so there was no twitter no instagram to share all this stuff enough And also they have a benefit of being able to talk about and promote gambling right now where they used to not be able to do do that but severi big but I tell you this little history lesson for very simple reason in two thousand thousand one the XFL lasted one year and although they were convinced at the start of it they were going to give it a real shot a three year trial and they had a major network. NBC and Vince McMahon man with very deep pockets. And you hear everything right now about the XFL saying we're in this for three years. We're going to give this a real legitimate zhitnik shot and I don't doubt that that's what they believe right now and for all of those people who love football for all those his players who want to give a football another chance in their lives great. I think it's fantastic. The only thing I would say he is. They're going to have to battle against what everybody battles when they try to start a spring football league and the only one that it had a remote amount of success was the USFL which died thirty five years ago. So I think before everybody. Everybody gets way too excited about this. Just realize that the only way that this league will work the only only way is evinced McMahon Oliver Luck in those who are at the head of this project if they mentally say to themselves we are in this and will be willing to lose two or three hundred million dollars because the only way that you're going to have a chance is with staying power is with telling people. Hey listen we're going to show up here next week. It if we ever crowd of six thousand one week we don't care we will be back next weekend. You're not going to get rid of us. That's the only way because these leagues fail when you start to get into the dog days of the first year it's why the AF failed you get into the dog days and and the money is it's a money pit. You're throwing money money away the only way the XFL will work is if they are willing in essence to be a loss leader her for a good solid two to three years and not even think of getting rid of the product until you've played two to three years and understand that staying power is what makes a good league. So let's go. You want to our conversation with Patrick Mahomes. I recorded it while he was on his way home from the gym. Last Friday which was five days after the Super Bowl? And you'll hear Patrick mahomes right here here. We Patrick Mahomes Patrick. It's we're as we record this on Friday morning four or five days after the Super Bowl. Has Your Life changed. What's your life been and like this week?.

"Yeah I mean God forbid man you hope that we get another decade of this and we we get to see this kind of football for the next ten fifteen years. I mean my home said in during one of the post game interviews that I thought I was going to be a baseball player. His father was a major league pitcher right so for him him. Football wasn't even a given when he was in high school. They said he played basketball too. that he was like a really good point guard. So yeah man I mean it is all the stuff that we talk Cabana terms of life just trying different sports not winnowing. Your windows very early. I really loved these dudes who did not just because a quote identity politics but because of their roots to the game and how they were resilient and Kinda stuck to their own little particular paths. It just shows that there's so many different kinds of ways to play football. They don't all have to look Matt Barkley guys. While moms has a little bit of ways to go a few wants to catch Jimmy. Garoppolo in terms of Super Bowl rings dropping scoreboard Dan but Mahanta on his way so everybody talks about. We're going to see them again. I mean Payton. Manning has to one of them when he was like a deeply compromise. Do Air Rogers. One one. John John Elway went to Dan Marino. Never won any like we can't take these things for granted it may never happen again and so we really should appreciate it because like if you just cannot take for granted especially in football that had mahomes is going to be here again on top of the NFL. So Kudos to him. Andy Reid that they got it done this year. Because you just never know Joel. had to run but Stefan we must press on and what better way to press on than on the tennis court. On Sunday and Melbourne Novak Djokovic fell behind two sides to Wanda Dominic team and the final of the Australian Open. He looked mentally out of it. He looked physically compromised and then suddenly finally he was neither of those things. Jovic won the last two sets six three and six four to win his eighth Ozzy Oban in eight finals. Seventeenth Grand Slam lamb overall. That's two behind Nidal and three behind Federer. Jovic beat veteran. The Semis for the all time Grand Slam title lead joining us. Now is Louisa Thomas of the New Yorker Louisa. Hey and your piece. After the men's fine all you wrote referring to Jovic. Is there any modern athlete. who better reflects and in in some strange way seems to understand the connection between the mind and the body As I noted that connection was a little bit on the Fritz in the middle of the match against team then he got it back again. It's sort of amazing. He had what was pretty clearly a mental lapse after he was called for two-time violations in one game and in which he hit a double fault and sort of went off the rails a bit and suddenly it was like this little mental blip was in his feet he was in his arm and then it was. Maybe he wasn't feeling well and then maybe he was dehydrated and he was sort of frantically on the sidelines eating different things in recalibrating sodium levels. Or who knows what you know. He does to sort of get the machine back in order but it was pretty clear that whatever had momentarily momentarily affected him mentally with suddenly kind of having a physical effect and I think that that's something that he throughout his kind of searching for some sort of way wave like being in the world who does a lot of yoga he's like very intimate very kind of peace love but at the same time. He's someone who's very kind of driven to perfectly recalibrate everything he eats. Everything breeze drinks. How many times he chooses? Who all of this kind of obsessive gain an edge and? I think that he does see this kind of really profound connection between how. He's feeling mentally how he's moving and and in sort of weirdly works for him did his mental breakdown over the time violations allegations. Did they feel justified to now. It was weird. It was really weird especially because this is not something that is. There is some indiscretion about win. The umpires starts the clock but there is now a like o'clock this posted so he could have very easily looked over and seen how much time he had to serve. This is not something that he has to guess. That is something that like. He was getting mad at the umpire for doing his job in the most basic way he's getting mad at time exactly he was mad at times. In fact unpire showed tremendous restraint in not giving him some sort of penalty for actually touching him which is not allowed Jovic went over to him very oddly tapped his shoe later. He said he didn't know about the role that you're not allowed to touch appears that seems pretty seasick to me and he also said he thought it was a very friendly tap but it was a very very odd gesture and the umpire. I think did exercise a lot of restraint and certainly discretion in letting battle by I have not and I think it would have been very easy for that. I'm part to do something I mean. Not only did he defend sorry Damien demand has the name. I I mean not only would he have been completely justified just on the foot tap alone but then Jovovich sits down and he gets all sarcastic with them. which if my recollection is not incorrect back? Other players have been penalized for this. This is the way that empires should actually act. He did a good job in not overreacting. So just because other empires have have have overreacted. And the past. That doesn't mean the Damian should have in this case Lewis. I found that it's often. I'm really hard to understand or know where see when players are physically compromised like in the Federal Sandra match and the quarterfinals federal kind of started to lose it in the second set before he went off the court for the medical time out and then he comes back and he's clearly moving slowly but there was a period of time in that match when Federer just started losing and it's like really hard to tell why she's like a quarter step slow slow and maybe just as the point belts. He's not able to get as much power on his shots. And it just starts to kind of accumulate as a a rally goes on on and it's interesting that even within the same match with the same player in the same opponent. It can be hard to tell exactly what's going on whether it's Meno whether it's physical whether it's Greiner a back or a leg and it's kind of humbling as an observer tonight even to not be able to understand that as a little uncertain athletes will go out of their our way to not let you know what's going on you know they'll keep the poker face they will not want to portray any weakness. They don't WanNa give up any blood in the water but I the joke of it is not like that. I think joke someone who does express himself a little bit more freely. Some people you know do bridal at that are. That's unprofessional some people. I think that that's very cute. You know this is how he's feeling. And why does everyone need to be like middle. Who doesn't want to betray any hint of human failing so I think that that's part of it? I also think that you know that also speaks to how find these margins are I mean if you do have some sort of element that makes you slow down half stop. That's the difference between a rally shot in the winner so I think sometimes there are certain tells Something that a lot of people talk about is like serve speed will drop in and you can see how much they're able to push their legs. Certain things will hinder them in certain specific ways and you can sort of look at those movements in those actions and see how they're affected affected but this is actually a case in which even Jovic was pretty open about God. He didn't really know what was going on. It was just this weird short-circuiting this system that that he was sort of was able to sort of like recover from in this in this kind of superhuman way but was very oddly affecting him and you said recovered in an effective way. I mean it was sort sort of like tried everything I mean. It was an energy GEL. Pack were dates. There was a banana there were how many different drinks like three. This is one of my favorite parts of the sort of like frantic. And he wasn't just like drinking them he was frantically guzzling a medical timeout. So the trainer came out. The doctor came out so he was clearly aware that the system is not functioning properly and the instant recovery was kind of remarkable. I mean I don't know whether that's is that the energy gels or was it the extra few minutes to try to recalibrate what was going on in his mind but the match turned completely. I mean team was good. We'll team wasn't bad. Even when Jovic level was kind of moving up and down more than teams was right. Let's talk about team. Australian twenty six years old has now lost in three major finals. All of which are kind of facing insane playing Rafael Nidal in the French Open. Final twice something Jovovich and the Australian Open final. None of those guys have ever lost in any of those contacts wrath has never lost a French final joke which is never lost just nausea and final Louisa after this match was over the like. ESPN ticker announcement of what had happened. Made me laugh. It said Golden Age of men's tennis continues and then the type under was no man born in the ninety S. That's I don't know if that's what golden age it's I think the point they're trying to make there is that and united and no new Grand Slam winners among the men since the two thousand fourteen. US Open the big three of Jovovich veteran. It all just keeps winning. All of these titles team is very very close to being on on their level. And I don't know if you would. You agree that like in terms of just pure physical skills and talent. You'd probably want teams shots and game right now over any of those guys absolutely. I mean there are couple of young players who have really exciting interesting games. I would put team at the top of the list but you know someone like to know method eh in the. US Open showed how kind of very unusual end uncomfortable game could be really effective and interesting to watch but yet teams game. I think is incredible. He's such heavy ball. He is so fast. And that's not something I'd really appreciate. It actually Intel watching him in this tournament in particular but he has his hands. Handsome actually was very effective at. I mean he is very good court coverage you know you could use a little bit of improvement on serve. But now I'm really being picky. The things that blacks are just the ability to win those handful of points in those certain moments the other guys seem to really have a stranglehold on. I mean it will go back to one thing this. This is really the first time that Jovic his appeared to be totally out of the match and come back in one he actually did this in the twenty fifteen Australian Open final against any Murray in any moves really Bothered by it. He talked about how distracting to him in the third set to watch joke. It's really kind of seem to stumble and almost come you punch drunk and then suddenly come back in and play Nintendo tennis basically and I think that you can fault for you know playing pasta or you can say that..

"The fewer points that you need to score to win later and by the the Garoppolo risk aversion because on that very same drive Dr. They did wind up throwing the ball long and taking a chance and George kiddle got called for offensive pass interference otherwise they have the ball down inside the fifteen yard hardline yet but that was a huge. I mean that was a surprise when it happened. It was like Oh God they actually took a shot with Garoppolo. Downfield almost paid off. I don't I just. I tend to think think that Shanahan was hamstrung by quarterback and maybe I'm being the reductive in the way that I don't want others to be but I do think that the chiefs make you scared and you like I. I don't WanNa do anything that's going to give them an opportunity. I'm not I don't WanNa give them more opportunity to talk about. I just want to hold the ball and try to ride it out. The other piece of this though is that they had every reason to believe that well you know what off pass rushes dominating the offensive line. Maybe we'll be able to keep that up in staffing. You mentioned earlier that we're going go back and figure out what happened with the chiefs offense in the first three quarters of the game. I guess I'm GonNa put this out here. Is it possible to pet. Mahomes was concussed or something was wrong with him that his that he had cobwebs because he got hit really hard a couple of times in that game and he didn't look right. You're right and we. Sometimes we just caught up. Forget like these guys is out there. Having to play with injuries playthrough injuries I remember after one of those hits near the goal line with the ball went out of bounds. I think Jimmy Ward that hit him in the ball flew out of bounds and I was like man it could have been worse but it was still hard. Hit any looked weird after it so I don't know man. It could have been something like that to that. They got him under control. We've got shook we. You don't have to do anything outside of what we normally do to win this game and I would doubt have been dumb if they thought there was a moment and the I think it was in the first half when Garoppolo got hit and threw an interception and the replay seem to indicate that he had his eyes closed so maybe that was an issue that he was just closing his vice and instead of having them them open. That's something to consider. I did look up quarterbacks throwing with their eyes closed and I found a story by Lee Jenkins and and the New York Times in two thousand five that explain the drew brees did drills with his eyes closed. A GAROPPOLO is taking it to the next level. I've actually bring to live of action intriguing. Approach Andy Reid the outpouring for him throughout the playoffs and then after the Super Bowl seems totally appropriate. And this is a guy who this is two hundred and twenty second when an as an NFL head coach she had a reputation earlier in his career. That was well earned for have his teams lose playoff games and frustrating fashion. A Lot of times after puzzling coaching decisions. Yeah but in this game Stephan. And whether it's because Andy Rita's changed his philosophy or whether because whether it's that personnel you know it's not like you know you had Michael Michael Vick and Donovan mcnabb before they're not bad or whether it's because the NFL in general is more aggressive on fourth down. The chiefs went for it on fourth down a couple a couple of times in the first half and it wasn't even considered like unusual or particularly aggressive. I mean that's where we are in the league now now and One of those plays that the chiefs ran was inspired by the nineteen forty eight rose bowl. The guys pure wedding and the backfield the direct snap to running back both aggressive and find and the chiefs. I feel like you know. Leaned in more to who they are and what they do and the forty niners went away from it. I mean that's kind of narrative talk but it's true. Yeah no I think it's totally true. There was a little bit of well actually about the nineteen forty eight rose Baldo. The Eric did say that they they were looking at these tapes and then on twitter there was a lot of well actually Notre Dame brand the similar fence in the nineteen twenties knute rockne eh but still like think I mean that's what I loved about. It was less like what the actual genesis of that formation was and more that there are coaches in the NFL that are looking at video from nineteen forty eight to come up with innovative. Klay ideas in twenty twenty. It's crazy and it's fun an and yes exactly Josh. The chiefs seemed to have more fun when they are playing even the period and need to do the pirouetting right they could have just slid over. which is what the nineteen eighteen? Forty eight clip play pure. Wet Little Distraction distraction so I knew admire that in with Andy Reid. I mean part of the outpouring of affection. Gene is what Andy Reid is always had this big Wilford Brindley dude right. And he's he's really sweet and players love him and he's not an asshole screaming being quizzing players about the history of the franchise kind of guy and setting crazy dumb rules. He is a much more genial thoughtful intellectual participatory coach and players like that. And when you deliver that approach the players they respond in a particular way that empowers them and they feel empowered. Whether are there actually empowered or not. or they're just executing plays is irrelevant. They feel like hey this is more fun and we have more freedom and it's more creative. I am curious. UJJAL would rather play for though. Because because for the chiefs the running game. Little more vestigial they'd Damian Williams had a a great game so it's like the the running game was her laughter thought the the forty niners maybe not as as genial and fun head coach but that guy can make anybody a thousand yard running back. The running game is king young coach. Oh how Shanahan. A young coach could relate to the goals of the world players of his generation. I wouldn't want to be is expendable as a running back appears to be the forty forty nine Matt Brita was the guy early start the next day or a Brita right. Yeah you could be just forgotten. Yeah I'd much rather there'd be in that Andy Reid offense where you are the guy and you get the U. K.. And you're also a part of the passing offense. It's a pretty all encompassing effort. If you're running back in Andy Andy Reid off once you get to do a little bit of everything. Didn't he have Masan McCoy at some point as well am I gonNA make it right. Yeah right sobbing. He's got experience has been like a guy I wouldn't WANNA be in writing Rahim. Most we might not hear him in like two years he may be gone to be honest. Same with Matt Brita Kevin Coleman who miraculously recovered from shoulder shoulder. I mean I thought he was done when he got hurt when he left in the NFC championship game. I thought season was over and he started in the Super Bowl. But I think the thing with Andy Reid for me is that him. Winning is like a triumph over a bad narrative. It's like stupidly enough his resume contribution to the game. Now it's unassailable like he's easily into the hall of fame and I don't know do it probably would have happened without this. There would have been the thing right but with now. You can't take that away from him. I imagine this is what it would have been like Tony. Romo had won on a super bowl. I'd be like Oh yeah. I'm glad that dump people don't get to be right about this guy anymore. I do think the Donna that mcnabb super bowl like final drive thing is is a little bit overblown. Obviously it was bizarre at the time that they were there was like the world's slowest possible mcnabb was hurt. Art like it was the end of a long and and taxing game. There are extenuating circumstances there. But when I was looking back and writing this thing on Sunday night this game in two thousand eleven where they're losing to the packers by eleven points at the beginning of the fourth quarter they have fourth in one on the packers sixteen yard line and they kick a field goal. They even they like missed a field goal. But it's like thirty four phil go but it would have gotten them with with an eight points in the fourth quarter. And you're giving the ball back to Aaron Rodgers. It's like that is really stupid like no matter. What we say about Andy Reid? If he's taken too much crap for this or it's been overstated and the long record shouldn't be overshadowed by a couple of bad playoff games but that is just like so bizarre to me that a coach would make that decision and again whether you're it's he's changed whether it's NFL. I think it's probably the NFL. Well he's helped change the NFL to yeah. If you look at the numbers just going for it. On fourth and short short is the thing that has dramatically shirt and the last few years like on the broadcast. You heard Troy Aikman when the chiefs We're downtown saying oh they can just feel goal here. It's fine there within two possessions. They need to feel go anyway. Just like that is like monstrously idiotic. Thinking like the broadcast booth is now like well behind coaches on the field. Which I guess? It's better than the alternative. But I think we can talk about what at Fox and other broadcasters think that the quote unquote casual fan wants during the super bowl like they want the images of players looking like superheroes or whatever whatever the hell that was but like all of the broadcasters have clearly made a decision that like if fans want like a Rafeh analyst or whatever they're still like nobody in the booth explaining like all right mathematically mathematically. This is what I make sense to do. Like this is a percentage you know you know when probability like it doesn't even it doesn't even need to be like that fancy or make it. It's just like yeah no troy. That's like really stupid. You just like want to score a touchdown that score another touchdown you win the game. You don't need to go to overtime by kicking a field. I mean it's just like I don't understand that is not evolved. Can I make one final point about this season in conclusion Joel. ESPN's the undefeated talked about the year. The black quarterback ran a ton of stories about the black quarterback. We end the year with Lamar Jackson as the most valuable player. mahomes winning the Super Bowl and name name the Super Bowl Most Valuable player Patrick mahomes and Lamar Jackson for the next decade health permitting and personnel permitting this could be a really terrific run for the NFL on an affirmation of who should be playing these positions when they're given the opportunity to play them. Yeah I mean I really interesting about those two guys non-traditional national paths right like. It's not like they were going to quarterback coaches and learning dropbacks from the time they were eight years old. dudes that Plato. The sports and kind kind of came into the position in learn how to play it in quote nontraditional way right. Maybe there's some sort of a lesson in that and also just sort of the idea that quarterbacks don't necessarily surly come into package you expect as Patrick Mahomes playing college because I'm a big twelve guy played against Tcu. And I say this all the time now thought Patrick Mahomes was terrible in college. It's like when they said he was going to be a first round. Pick not leave this but obviously you know the thing is that. There's something there that Andy Reid in all these other guys got a chance to Zien just kind of hope that that sort of open mindedness about what a quarterback looks like will hold through..

"What a super bowl? Let's recap trump talked to Hannity. Johnny Cash Song was exploited. OJ made an appearance during a top one hundred players montage. The Rock screamed time to unleash. Hell chiefs fans did their racist chant military color guard to USA songs. World War Two veterans as as David Roth wrote on unnamed temporary sports blog dot com after two decades of leveraging and re leveraging the actual thing that has value here a game that that people really do want to watch together. This is the celebration. We're left with at least in the end. We could celebrate the actual game which turned out to be pretty the exciting mahomes. Mahomes the chiefs offense to three touchdowns in the final six minutes and seventeen seconds while forty niners coach and offensive play caller Kyle Vile Shanahan decided to stop doing what had worked so far in the Game Final Score Kansas City Missouri Chiefs Thirty One San Francisco California Forty niners honors twenty chiefs coach. Andy Reid finally wins the Big One and the Shanahan Families Super Bowl head coaching record drops to end one. This was actually kind of slog slog in which you were lulled into believing that the forty niners defense had figured out how to stop Mahomes they were up by ten and then with seven minutes left mahomes throws throws fifty-seven yards in the air to tyreek Hill for a forty four yard game and then suddenly I was like. Oh Shit this is not over. Joel were you lulled old up until that point I think so because I think I even tweeted something in like in the end of the third quarter I was like oh it. Looks like the forty niners gaining strength. I can't remember a time. Oh Cat mahomes. In the chiefs. Offense has looked like that it was like an effort. You can see everything that they did required so much of themselves to just you know stay above water and I just like you normally played so much more fluid looking offense they're hitting big plays downfield and none of that happened. And you'd like to think well I mean they're going to figure this out or not. And that's Kinda the thing with the chiefs chiefs that no matter how bad they look no matter what point in the game they looked overwhelmed. The underperforming did never really out of it. And that's the thing about the chiefs. Offense is so good that gives them a huge margin for error that they kinda piddle around all game long and then they can eventually figure it out by hitting a couple of big plays overhead. Then you come down. The chiefs are down ten. The seven thirteen left in the game. They're facing a third and fifteen a lot of teams. That seems like that's kind at the end of the road. You don't think they have a chance. But with the chiefs that is a regular play for them like they're never out of it and of course they hit Tyreek Hill. Forty four yards down the field and that kind of sparked that comeback. You can never rest with cheese if you're the opposing defense. You can never assume the game is enhanced because all it takes is a couple of plays turn things around Mahomes look like Eli Manning getting there late on a super bowl throwing a deep soaping him. Okay up until that point. He looked at all points in the game. That was a third and fifteen play. Mahomes had asked for that play on that drive moment. I was called to three jet chippewas HIP WASP to three jet chip wasp and the key to that throw was his being able to have time to drop as far back as he did and unleash early. Along threat of tyreek Hill. Because hill was thirteen yards scrimmage and hell was certainly wide open but mahomes had to get him the ball and the reason. I think that the chiefs offense had had trouble earlier in the game was the forty niners pass. Rush mahomes had some uncharacteristic bad throws through behind hill. A couple times actually for interceptions but Nick Bosa whatever you want to say about his tweets and his political beliefs as a very good football player and was getting a lot of pressure on mahomes. uh-huh knocked the ball away from him once. The rest of the forty niners defensive line is excellent but on this play when they needed a pocket for homes when he needed several seconds to L. to drop back and throw the ball he did actually have the time and space to launch the ball deep. And that's how the chiefs able to come back. I will be curious to see if there is Some more to learn about what was going wrong for the chiefs up until that point the statistics where I mean during the game. I'm like reading the stats on twitter. And you're sort of like dumbfounded. Football perspectives that. It was the thirty seventh game of Mahomes this career only once had he picked up a first down on less than twenty six percent of his passing in plays and up to that point he was at like two through three quarters yards per. Play the forty niners at eight the chiefs at four and a half off the chiefs only had possessions sections seven times up until like nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter. I mean that's Kinda why the game folic slogged me just boring ring game where not much was going on. You know. The teams didn't really have the ball much and that is the kind of game that the forty niners can win Joel and they had those eight yards per play. You know a bet with Jimmy Garoppolo through there but a lot of it was on the ground and you know with Deebo Samuel running on end around plays and the kind of. I don't know if it's innovative. That might have innovative. And like nineteen fifty and innovative again and two thousand twenty but like Kyle Shanahan's running game has offense was allowing allowing the forty niners not only to get big chunks of yardage on offense but keep the chiefs offense off the field. Yeah I think that's kind of the thing right. The running game had been I an effective pretty much all night long. They were averaging something like six dollars. Play going into the fourth quarter. People want to blame this on. Kyle Shanahan if you're a falcons fan if you're forty niners fan you WANNA point to cow Shanahan getting conservative. Kyle Shanahan the offensive coordinator. When the Falcons Blue Twenty eight to three lead in the Super Bowl you might recall yes all right so you either want to blame him for being conservative or you want to blame him for not trusting his quarterback? Whatever it is? There's a narrative around cal Shanahan. Did he doesn't know how to manage late late. Game situations taking the crown from Andy Reid after last night but the thing about it is that I come back to. We talked about third downplay. The mahomes hit in in the fourth quarter. Well let's go a drive later. Jimmy Garoppolo misses a pallet. I mean it was it was laughable. How much he overthrew Emmanuel Sanders says like like a step behind the defense? You hit that play. That's touchdown that's game but Jimmy Garoppolo couldn't do and grapple had been the best quarterback on deep throws all year. I mean it's not like Garoppolo is a total amateur back there but Shanahan also events a huge amount of trust in him at various points throughout the game and throughout the playoffs. off-spinner right Joel on that. Throw that D pass to sanders. He overthrew him by a couple of steps the to me. That wasn't even the decisive play of the game. The decisive play of the game for me was would what a benefit had been a touchdown. Well no no. No I just mean in terms of a play call with was like six zero six left in the game. They run the ball on first down. I'm with Rahima Sturt. And then they pass on second down incomplete two kids and they pass on third down. He misses deebo Samuel on screen as the Real Sports Guy Stephen White former. NFL defensive. Ed pointed out after watching the all twenty two all night. Apparently deebo Samuel is wide open on that third flex. But it's why are you passing on second down when you were trying to a burn the clock and be your running backs are dominant. This made no sense in the Super Bowl. You have a quarterback. You think that you can trust your quarterback to complete something second and five. You know what I mean like. I know that the alternative is to say we'll call. Shanahan wasn't being aggressive when he was playing like he had a lead that he really didn't have against the chiefs right. Because if you're only up by like a couple of scores that's like being tied with the chiefs and so you could say well. He was trying to be aggressive. Put the game in the hands of his quarterback quarterback simply wasn't up to the challenge. You know what I mean. It's tough to blame. Kyle Shanahan for the failures of Jimmy. Regret blow. And I'm not saying Jimmy Garoppolo. I don't WanNA reduce it all to this. Jimmy Garoppolo patent homes as the hero. But if you look at like would they ask their quarterbacks to do the achieves asked Pat Mahomes. Hey Man we need you to make a play right now carry US home. He could do it. Jimmy Garoppolo that's just not something he can do. Yeah I don't know man. They didn't need Jimmy Garoppolo to make a playwright. They're they're winning. Their running game is dominant. They need to get five yards on two plays. They've been averaging five yards a carry. I don't know all of this is contextual right so in last year super bowl when the rams scored three points if Jimmy Garoppolo was the quarterback of his old New England patriots the Badri probably would have won by more uh-huh in this year's super bowl mahomes throws two interceptions if the forty niners had taken advantage of more opportunities earlier in the game. Then you know even these amazing Comeback Kansas City chiefs. There might not have been enough time on the clock for them to be able to execute him as you pointed out in your piece that posted on slate overnight. Josh Josh One of the crucial times when that happened was at the end of the first half when Kyle Shanahan decided not to use a time out they had three timeouts with over a minute and in La Baule. That was a mistake. That was obvious to everybody in retail watching the game and real time and yet sort of towards the end of the game. The forty niners are holding onto this. Lead you kind of tend to forget that the reason that they have a lead by this precise amount of points is is that there are opportunities earlier on that were forsaken and Shanahan said after the game I liked where we're at well. How do you like where you're at when you're tied right at ten against a team that has always scoring like but loads of points and you're essentially saying I don't want to score more right now now I'm good? Doesn't that sound like a guy who's afraid of his quarterback though you'd have me like Jimmy sound like what you know what he hasn't screwed up he hasn't thrown an interception we've controlled fill position Russian. It could be worse. That's the thing about the chiefs. I guess is that they make you think they could always be worse. But the forty niners had so many time outs at that point that they could just run the ball down on the field and at least get into to feel range. It was yes I think there was Aversion to have Garoppolo try to do something they're running down the field and such big big chunks that it was I think less about Garoppolo there and more about. We're getting the ball to start the second hand. Yeah it was like what less miles used to do as no less you coach. He didn't understand that the score as it was right then with like not actually be the score for the entire rest of the game and then the more points that you scored in the beginning at an early stage of the game..

"Efficient. Now remember <Speech_Male> when Jimmy Cheese not <Speech_Male> playing with the San Francisco <Speech_Male> Forty niners team. <Speech_Male> They are bad at football <Speech_Male> bad <Speech_Male> at football <Speech_Male> he got hurt. <Speech_Male> They want down <Speech_Male> number two. Pick this this <Speech_Male> year now. He's <Speech_Male> back in the lineup. <Speech_Male> All they do is win <Speech_Male> win win no <Speech_Male> matter what Jimmy <Speech_Male> G. is a guy <Speech_Male> that I absolutely <Speech_Male> trust. What the ball in his <Speech_Male> hand? Yeah you're dead to me <Speech_Male> but <Speech_Male> you know the challenge <Speech_Male> for this is what the chief <Speech_Male> of a little bit more <Speech_Male> than those tapes. <Speech_Male> That's a lot of zone. <Speech_Male> Defense chiefs <Speech_Male> will play on a ton <Speech_Male> of man coverage <Speech_Male> so then defenders <Speech_Male> is on on <Speech_Male> their people rather <Speech_Male> than just the run game <Speech_Male> in Berlin. <Speech_Male> Where have been really <Speech_Male> good this year playing <Speech_Male> man coverage <Speech_Male> the big deal? Is this <Speech_Male> if you're going to go <Speech_Male> towards that run <Speech_Male> you've gotta know what <Speech_Male> cow wants to get <Speech_Male> to out of that <Speech_Male> run if it's <Speech_Male> going to be the <Speech_Male> deep crosser or <Speech_Male> the breaker <Speech_Male> in the return <Speech_Male> you've got to get. The <Speech_Male> some of the formation <Speech_Male> tells says <Speech_Male> a defense <Speech_Male> the challenge for the chiefs <Speech_Male> is going to be this. Can <Speech_Male> you do <Speech_Male> to Jimmy. Garoppolo <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> did the Jared Goff <Speech_Male> that pets <Speech_Male> me. Jared Goff <Speech_Male> played drop back quarterback back. <Speech_Male> And that's not <Speech_Male> the strength of him or <Speech_Male> that offense and <Speech_Male> so can they get Jimmy <Speech_Male> G. to play dropback. <Speech_Male> Jimmy Jeez the best <Speech_Male> quarterback in the <Speech_Male> NFL right now say <Speech_Male> with me. Did <Speech_Male> Jimmy the best quarterback back <Speech_Male> in the NFL and the play <Speech_Male> action and a drop back <Speech_Male> game. He's not the same <Speech_Male> guy and that's <SpeakerChange> going to be the <Speech_Male> difficulty of the issue <Speech_Male> with that. Is You talked <Speech_Male> about getting the then. <Speech_Male> If you're a defensive <Speech_Male> player and you're sitting <Speech_Male> there and looking at this nice pretty pretty <Speech_Male> picture you can <Speech_Male> get it all. You know what he does. <Speech_Male> It throws <Speech_Male> motion in the shifts <Speech_Male> in there. And so <Speech_Male> you think you have the tell <Speech_Male> and then you notice the <Speech_Male> man in your cobbling <Speech_Male> and man and you're trying <Speech_Male> to figure all that stuff about <Speech_Male> cloud <Speech_Male> your mind. Then <Speech_Male> they hit you with his own play <Speech_Male> action next <SpeakerChange> thing you know <Speech_Male> you're spending <Speech_Male> is Jimmy. G. Doesn't <Speech_Music_Male> play the niners <Speech_Music_Male> stink <Speech_Music_Male> when he plays <Speech_Male> there. <SpeakerChange> That's <Speech_Male> all you have to do. You <Speech_Female> guys stink. <Speech_Female> So let's continue <Speech_Music_Female> on get up <Speech_Music_Male> this morning and we're <Speech_Music_Female> GonNa get back to everything <Speech_Music_Female> related to Patrick <Speech_Music_Female> Mahomes. If you'd think <Speech_Music_Female> the forty niners are <Speech_Music_Female> going to change the way they <Speech_Music_Female> defend because they're <Speech_Music_Female> facing the home think <Speech_Music_Female> again why that <Speech_Music_Female> decision <SpeakerChange> could be a <Speech_Music_Female> very bad one and <Laughter> speaking <Laughter> of bad decisions <Speech_Music_Female> just getting <Speech_Music_Female> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Female> We <Speech_Music_Female> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> are <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> those guys <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> as <Speech_Music_Male> those guys in <Speech_Music_Male> <Laughter> Iraq. <Speech_Music_Male>

"So so so. Let's let's do this rex. You are one of the great defensive coaches of all time and no one understands and cares about defense more than you. You coached against some of the all time. Greatest offenses dances during your time as defensive coach. How Do you if you're coaching this weekend? For San Francisco attack this Kansas City. I made first first off. There's no way I'm going to put Richard locking down the Cheetah that ain't GonNa Happen Man. He'll lose foot race one hundred percent of the time so anytime time that Richard Sherman is is if he's going to be in man coverage on he's going to have help on top promise you that but the one thing I would. Do you have to hit. These guys is at the line of scrimmage if you give free access you've got no chance so that's what I expect them to do. The the forty niners. So it's interesting. They're not a team name. That is game plan specific. They haven't been the entire season. They play more straight zone coverage than anybody in the national football league. So are they. We're GONNA change now that you've had two weeks of preparation either. I don't think they're going to and here's the thing I think if they try to do something they're not they're not accustomed. Listen to give up fifty points they may give up fifty running their deep pits. Buddy doing what you say in defense or to put somebody over top go man. You'RE GONNA have to go man at some point put somebody over top whoever's covering he'll understand that that'll be fine. That's a good way to play defense. If it wasn't affected they got me Cole. Apartment Intrepid Kelsey. Somebody if you play man defense someone will be in Man Coverage Amoco harmonised just as fast as sorry Kayleigh is so. That is a problem for anybody. The Travis County. He's GONNA kill any safer linebacker.

"From Miami Beach this Tuesday evening Super Bowl Week Recording this late in the evening I've got three guests for you this this week get breadth each Kansas City chiefs general manager. He's the man who did the most other than Andy Reid. Obviously who made the draft draft pick. But he's the man who did the most to bring Patrick Mahomes to the Kansas City chiefs. And I'll explain why he'll explain. Why in this podcast? We'll also have Matt Maiocco. Covers the San Francisco. Forty niners for NBC. Sports Bay area and I added this after listening. The Kyle Shanahan speak on Monday night media. Night I. It's about what the New England Patriots and San Francisco. Forty niners did did when the transaction of Jimmy Garoppolo of the quarterback from New England going to San Francisco for a second round draft choice. We're GONNA delve into that a little bit with Mayo an curren because I just found it a very very interesting story when Kyle Shanahan started talking about at this on Monday night at Marlins Park where they're holding media night but before we get into it I'm GonNa make my super bowl pick. I'm picking the chiefs to win thirty eighty to twenty eight when Mike Florio told me this week that the line was one and a half. I said okay. Kansas City twenty nine and a half San Francisco Twenty eight I think it's going to be a fairly high scoring game. I think that this is easily one of the toughest super bowls That there has been to pick in recent years and maybe ever because I think either team could win this game by fourteen points or more. I just think that especially if Jimmy Garoppolo which none of us know if Jimmy Garoppolo can rebound and be a big factor in this game. I think that San inference iskoe easily could score in the high twenties or thirties against Kansas City. Just a few reasons for For My pick now I do expect the Jimmy Garoppolo whose only thrown fourteen passes in the last six quarters. While basically they've run the forty niners have run seventy seven percent of the time in the last six quarters and that I'm not saying I I don't think that Kyle Shanahan is GonNa lean on Garoppolo here. It's just that I don't know what to expect Jimmy Garoppolo in this game. I don't know that anyone one could know what to expect that Jimmy Garoppolo because he's been invisible for the last game and a half essentially. I don't blame the San Francisco Forty niners over the last six quarters. They rushed for six point two yards per carry and like I said my columnist week in football morning in America. If you you can rush for six point two yards per carry. Wouldn't you keep running it and I think where I land on this for. Everybody says Amana petrified about Garoppolo. I would be concerned about it but I will also remember this or I'll remind you this the team that had the toughest three game stretch in the NFL. This year was the San Francisco Forty niners when they had green bay at home and then at Baltimore and at New Orleans and I just thought that far and away this was going to be the toughest three-game stretch anybody had so Garoppolo quarterback the niners in those three games. He won two of them mm-hmm. He completed seventy two percent of his throws in those three games. Seven touchdowns one interception ten point one yards per tempt that is an excellent stat in an excellent Thing for Kyle Shanahan to come back to if if anybody he any point You know in his in his fan base or even in his locker room would question. Now Jimmy Garoppolo I think Kyle Shanahan has all the evidence he needs to say. This guy is going to throw the ball early and often on Sunday and we think he'll be fine so at the end end of the day. You probably say okay. Well then why didn't you pick the forty niners and I didn't pick the forty niners because I believe that Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in football all at throwing the ball when pressured and obviously he's GonNa face the defensive front with the best ability to pressure the quarterback of any team even football however since Patrick mahomes entered the National Football League incense is let's let's take it since the beginning of the two two thousand eighteen season Patrick Mahomes when he has to throw the ball in two point. Five seconds or less he has the best most passer rating in football. He's the most efficient quarterback in football. Why do I say two point? Five seconds or less that essentially is the line line of demarcation. It's not an official stat. But basically if you get to the quarterback in two point five seconds you're doing a great great job in the San Francisco Forty niners in these playoffs. Incredibly EV- averaged getting to the quarterback getting to pardon me kirk cousins and Aaron Rogers. They they've gotten to to to those quarterbacks very very efficiently and often and the average time to throw in the first two playoff games those guys two point five seconds so they've done a very good job and they'll do a good job against Patrick Mahomes. The question is will mahomes is be able to make the plays off his regular Throwing schedule off platform so to speak. Will he be able to make enough of those plays. I believe that he will. So I like the chiefs narrowly but please I beg. You do not take that to the bank. I am. Perhaps the worst predictor in all of the news media when it comes to trying to pick big games. So Oh let's get to our conversations this week we're going to start with Brett. Vh the Kansas City chiefs. General Manager who I think has has done an excellent job in short short time you know either atop personnel or being the GM. He replaced John. Dorsey after Dorsey was dismissed. A couple a couple of years ago so I think that Brett V. has very good institutional knowledge of where exactly Patrick Mahomes came from with.

"Hear directly from your Kansas City chiefs and I'll provide a little bit of color along the way my name Ms Pete Sweeney. I'm the editor in chief over at Arrowhead Pride. Dot Com and the three and chiefs have turned their attention to the Detroit lions are set to play noon Arrowhead time at Ford Field in Detroit great and this'll be a quick episode of from the podium because only Andy Reid and Patrick mahomes spoke from the podium on Wednesday so we'll start with the chiefs head coach. Here's Andy Reid read from the podium. The guys won't practice today or fish and tyreek. Damian Williams also be the practice before the challenge of playing Detroit. We know their football team. They're undefeated right now doing in a two and a half of my Matt Patricia these joint changed and their personnel players coaches playing hard aggressive football. Sorry guys are starting to get back in and make sure we study him and go go through a phase. We need to go through before we collect money that line for football. What about what what they're doing is really incredible. They play they've got a good scheme and then they play hard and tackle well. They've been living off turnovers on defense and now says of festively. They're scoring points so you gotTa make sure you stay on top of that. You've got you've got quarterback that has been around awhile and goes the game. They've got some guys that can also put the special teams who do took a job. Two turnovers are turnovers count but there's maybe a little difference between did go get it and then someone making a mistake making a living my actually take it away and things they're doing forcing them to tackle the ball and the ball ball comes out and and so yeah fumbles have been one thing about a couple of interceptions then there so that's all so far mentioned engined malnutrition obsolete kick from those though check and talking about big. That's your guy. How how long does it take for you to find who you are. You're always going to be influenced by came up with but what did you like reading reading to. Not You know Oh baby. I'm a smart elegant and so yeah I mean you. Develop your own thing. You put your name on it and you go you do it. As a player you doing as a coach in any profession where so normally starts aren't right way. You can't help but if you're copying somebody then the players re through that particular when player comes it was somewhere or else and then you've got problems so you've got to be yourself but he's done that. He's not nice job. He had a big responsibility with New England being coordinator for a number of years and he was so and I think he's kind of put his own mark movies. Those three released between Steve's Today. We sort of rotating was eight guys in these. I just how you feel it. The ideal yeah yeah you try to keep fresh throw fastballs in there. I think it's good to get some as young experience in there. Too pays off free down the down the road but I think are playing fast and aggressive. They seem to have a good grasp of the concepts mm skinny and we're trying to do so when the shop became available. You noted that he still showed a bear stocktake added for a few weeks different now than last yeah. He's got gray hair but he still has the vision in the shifty. He's never the fastest guy in the Orley fast enough but not that's not his game is gave him a great vision and an ability to move they still has he's got a burst. I catch pretty. We're not asking him to go. Every downed probably did that more in Philadelphia than what we're doing now so I I can't answer that part because he's he's in a rotation so But the vision and the feeder a the rookie receiver you've had with more through three games and go hardin Sean Jackson. UC makeup wise you know whether it's physical or mental that's kind of comparable to those took is our all legs little short torso long legs which is interesting unique and they don't. They don't now way at time. You put them on a scale. They're not going to be like one of our legs so it's but they could run and run fast and they both have a good feel for the game. Both of them are smart guys. Johnsboro smart kid wants typical Williams taking his opportunity yeah now so he played for us last year kind of the same type role and he's just kind of Mr consistent instant tough again. He's a smart kid so he knows everything protection wise. It's gone on patient runner. He goes he's GonNa. He's GonNa hit you. Bring a lot of hardaway behind him so he can shoulder down and get you a couple of extra hours there any the You seem to be pretty impressed today with coys ability to self right he played last week. He'd do anything above and beyond. was there something about what compared himself last week. I think it's just a willingness to spend time here. You know just stained and worked as well those injuries in the morning work at the better given it takes a lot of time and effort you got to kind of push through some things there that and he did he worked it and as a result he is able to play but I think it's a good example a certain injuries. You can't do that with this one that you can't and you're not going to hurt your career career. Your or your future to be able to walk is not just the time over the years is just one of those guys can push through some stuff. That's a tough position place. You'RE GONNA take a few hits now. He's quick enough and vision comes in handy so he knows is when you get down and then when to drop his shoulder and try and get extra yards but he's been pretty good with that you know from even when radio's young limit some of the unnecessary hit suggest to take on defense. Some of your stats are already better the last year but I'm from coach said the other day. He thanked the turnoff to come from coaches. Be What do you see. It tells you that this tanking get down. We're so oh close. I mean you see or were right there. We'll get our hands on the ball or were hesitant in some some areas to go. Get the ball and I mean there's small things and so I look at that and I go. Hey you give that a little time. You Trust those exchange and you've been league. I've seen it before so you know that's gotTa Company. That's earth Kerr things like warp speed out there so it's happening right now in real time and one of those things where you have to do it you gotta keep. I'm doing it and then it just becomes second nature so the improvement. The expectancy is mostly other things well no but that was so yeah. Turn turn so I'm saying that turnover is you'll see improvement in that area. If we have opportunities like the ones we've had or created opportunities like the ones we have so by putting yourself in the right position and but I think overall you're gonNA more. They planted planet. You better get who you mentioned making more coming from his days with the Patriots where some of the challenges I'm just for you as a play caller and also the game clinger knowing that you working when it gets guy who does like the scheme he's very good at it and and so you can say well they played man coverage here but they might come on Blake over to the next game so you don't know and so you make sure that you cover all the bases with you guys and he's got like I said the scheme that they've got is their base game is tremendous and then they can go different directions but I can tell by disciplined as guys are and I know that defense well enough what they're asking them to do you and and they're doing those things sound looks like the players trust and believe in color coded from a company standpoint. How big of a big frank ticket that I I mean it was good. It was good sack. I mean as much as he's doubled in keeps fighting through it. I think that's where I look at it. I mean I'm not into all the staff stuff at how many actually gets but being around the quarterback and then having him finally an opportunity to tackle. That's a good thing just a couple of good running backs up. This is another workload back. Have you worked lives. How critical tone early lower yours to carry. That's what you do. I mean the players want to do that. Way And the coaches want to do it that way so they work on it. I I just always give credit also to the team for a reason if they're good and tell you they're good the number one offense the number two defense is not like they're. GonNa win a lot of games and so good football team news emotional times fired up times baby chat and Chambas leaves teammates thing or something that he needs to get more more confident offer. Maybe a little bit more animated. He's he's been that way. I mean he's he's competitive and he's a leader Combat Punch and he's the one that's on the field and so he wants certain things out of the play as a player you got to get those those things done and so and that's were my trust in him and the other coaches trusted him comes in the these you make sure you demand the right things. Obviously you're in the game and he's very good with that. I mean that's one of his strengths so he's got that natural leadership ability and and he doesn't get job with. I think it weighs it. Well you do every every play. Just GonNa turn you but I think he's got a good show. For of course you can throw the ball tied into the first happened. must the second half run the ball. Pounds is their philosophical thing on every plane with the lead. Is there a certain waiting start trying to maybe get a little more conservative play calling situation. I probably tell you situation difference with that. In mind off feel so that's chiefs head coach. Andy Ndi read from the podium and you could tell he he's in a good mood. He's really excited that the chiefs for three and enrolling here but he's also focused on the Detroit Lions Matt Apper Tricia Really defensive-minded head coach from that Bill Belichick tree they really liked to run the football and he made some good comments about the defensive line rotation and how well that's been working out for the chiefs as far as defense. The defense is coming along. I found the compliments on the running backs interesting really highly complimentary of Shawn McCoy and Daryl Williams and what I found particularly interesting about it. This week is that read is going going above and beyond to commend Leshan McCoy for pushing through that ankle injury and that could just be a compliment for him but I wonder if there's more to it because Damian Williams has now been out for two weeks running. I'm talking to you right now. On Wednesday night he missed practice today. That's the fourth straight practice missed and read really said he was proud of McCoy. The thirty one on your old who sounded like did extra treatment to get back on the field. You wonder if there's an extra message that he's sending to perhaps another player on on the team the player at the same position it does make you wonder all right after the break. We're GONNA keep from the podium rolling with cheese quarterback. Patrick mahomes will be right back. Check out the American Ninja Warrior podcast for a behind the scenes. Andy reid from his press availability on tuesday. He welcomes jeff allen and the anthony thomas back to the team and you could hear it in his voice. He really doesn't think there's going to be too much of a transition for these these guys who know the offense to dive right back in and get up to speed in the twenty nineteen version including patrick mahomes mccoll hartman and some of the other different things that now exists exist. I found two points interesting in this press conference. Cam irving had been working as a starting left guard on tuesday. I thought it was interesting. That read said eh. He's just trying to mix him. With andrew. Wylie andrew wylie had been the starting left guard all training camp so this was a little bit odd but reid said he just wants to get the two players experience at both positions so the way. I look at it as this. If one of the tackles eric fisher or mitch schwartz goes down does it make more sense for the chiefs used to put andrew wylie at tackle and slide cam irving in than it does to just put cam irving and tackle is he better as a guard than a tackle. I tend tend to think that wiley is still a starter but the chiefs are just trying some things out and that makes sense to do at this time of the season. I also thought it was interesting and you heard my question to read about trauma smith that she's reworking shimon smith as a wide receiver now a member. He came as a cornerback transition to a running back. He was working as a wide receiver on on tuesday and it's just a chief trying to see what they have. In smith. I think with thomas now added to the roster smith making the team becomes more difficult because he served the chiefs chiefs as a backup returner where we've seen anthony thomas run as a backup returner before he was actually a starting returner on this team over the past few years so that certainly hurts the chances of tremont smith are we're gonna keep it moving here with the quarterback of your chiefs. Here's patrick mahomes from the podium. Media got a new face out there kind of during back danny..

"Again. Everybody's new favorite team in the league, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, joy Taylor is joining me. How are you joy? I'm Greg morning. This'll be fun tonight. It is we both love the NFL. And this is one of those games over the last month. We've been waiting for. Let's now review Patrick Mahomes two. Biggest games this year New England, man, he was nasty flying all over the place and making throws all over the place and had. To really bad picks in lost. All right. All right. Let's go to his next big game against the Rams news thrown ball all over the place and make him plays. What he had three picks two fumbles and lost. Two games two. Biggest games seven turnovers lost. And I hear nothing but hype affection and love. I know he throws no look passes. Call me nutty highlight my quarterbacks to look where they throw. In both those games, by the way against Tom Brady and Gough he had more yards. He had more highlights. He had more touchdown passes. Yet. Nobody seemed to mention it was a big part of why they lost its seven turnovers. It's interesting that Andrew luck who had a GM so bad. He was fired and a coat so bad. He was fired and had to pro bowlers and went eleven and five eleven five eleven and five and got to the AFC championship game where he was overwhelmed in Foxborough. Of course, he was New England had the better team. And all I heard was hey throws to many interceptions. It's the worst team that's ever gotten to a conference championship that eleven and five colts team, Patrick Mahomes, who I'm not sure is going to get to the AFC championship has Andy Reid who. Yes is gonna get probably one Super Bowl voted to the hall of fame an absolutely ridiculously gifted offensive roster. Eric berry, by the way, one of the top five athlete. From the lead. The gronk stopper will be coming back from Kansas City tonight. Why is that? Why is Andrew luck with no support a badge? EM a terrible coach get heat despite amazing win loss records and accomplishment in Patrick Mahomes. It's crickets why. Because one guy is a head band and another guy is a neck beard. One guy is fun and flashy on guys got a flip phone. One guy's got a little nightclub. One guy has a book club. One guy's cool. One guy's not one guys know look Andrew Lux, always look that's what we keep doing fallen for the flashy. I'm not saying Patrick Mahomes isn't really good. He's not Andrew log. He's not Andrew lock about the way. Andrew luck entered the league replacing somebody we all loved Peyton Manning. We didn't want like him to begin with. And he went to Stanford Stanford Stanford where rich kids Stanford. Yeah. Replacing Peyton Manning y'all Peyton Manning each Oreos, and sub sub sandwiches and drives a Buick and Patrick Mahomes, replace the likable but incredibly boring Alex Smith who could never throw for two touchdown passes in a single game. This is what we do in the big games versus good teams this year. New England the Rams and Baltimore last week. Patrick Mahomes is at eight turnovers. Not a word. Andrew luck took a team with two pro bowlers one of them a kicker. Bad GM bad coach running for his life. Really no help in the running game or defense to the AFC championship. And we just kept crushing him. Because he threw interceptions. Let me just ask you if Mahomes tonight loses and he shouldn't Eric berry is back in. Oh. By the way. The chargers don't have their top two running backs available. So they're going to be completely one dimensional Kansas City should win there at home. Biggest game in Kansas City in twenty years. What are we going to say tomorrow on the show? Well, I mean, he is amazing. And he didn't look multiple times any let's just try to hold everybody to the same level. Andrew luck with far less to this point had done far more. Far more. I do like Kansas City in this game. Because Kansas City comes in at home. Eric berry biggest game in a long time a ton to play for and the chargers don't have a home are seemingly playing every game on the road. And don't have one of the great running backs in the NFL available or his backup. Let me move to this story. This is interesting everybody today's talking about that team baby..

"And so often their timing isn't quite as good or you know, they are used to being able to do things based on raw ability that. Quarterbacks who think or react quicker? Are able to do with a lesser arm. I mean, I think Patrick is a pretty quick thinker. You know, he hasn't even started sixteen games. He hasn't been exposed to expose to too much yet. And you know, he reads defenses phenomenally well for where he is in his career. But he still hasn't even played a year yet. How do you think though, as we what we see in? What we experience how do you think though in even with the lead eleven, you know, going back to high school, how can an arm like that sort of be kept under wraps like in this in this world where you know, when basketball and in football like there are publications out there Seth that. Like here are the top seventh graders. I mean, this is crazy like it seems that having someone be a hidden gem. Like that is with what we're talking about. Like that sort of skill set. It seems almost impossible it does. But you know, football just cannot it cannot get out of its own way with. Comes to evaluate in quarterbacks. I mean, it just can't and the NFL was still a developmental league. I mean Aaron Rodgers Tom Brady drew Brees. Those guys are not the same player that they were when they entered the league. And so, you know, it's the biggest mystery is like why did the bears? Think Trubisky was the superior prospect into Patrick Mahomes. Why John Elway who's sitting there watching Patrick Mahomes? Throw kind of like a younger version of Elway himself. Not realize what was there in pick him? An and try to make a move to get himself. It's one of those things that I just don't think will ever be explained. But I think like. You know at the end of the day. It's like we do what we can to try to break down quarterbacks. Like a technician would break down and engine. When in fact, the sort of human spirit is much bigger deal than we ever make it out to be your one admit, and we can't predict for it right to the point that it seems that if you are willing to run the circuit and put your brand out there in in today's day and age where everything's a brand every person's brand, it seems that the people who are willing to brand themselves. The most like, oh, I'll go on your show and your show, and I'll talk this, and I'll be real personable about it. It seems that actually in that period of time. Everyone's making decisions means more than what someone can actually physically do totally. And I mean again, but with Patrick it's weird because he could physically do so many things, and I think that maybe Pat people just saw him as nothing more than having this. Great arm and didn't want trust, Texas. Techs often production, but he landed in a perfect situation because you look at some of these players who, you know, Alex Smith comes to mind, but he had I think five coordinators in his first five years. You know, you need stability. You just you look at Baker Mayfield. He's already going to be year behind because next year hub whole new offense coordinator, he'll be learning. Whole new things a whole new language and Patrick went to a safe destination. Yet, you know, he got to sit a year, and he's working with one of the most innovative coaches the past twenty years who's not going anywhere that we're aware of. And you mention Matt Ryan how Matt Ryan's career seems to have been flow with the consistency of his coordinators. Yeah. Without a doubt. I mean, you look at what Kyle Shanahan is doing in San Francisco, and you look at what Kyle Shanahan didn't Matt Ryan with Matt Ryan what they were able to do together. It's just obvious that coaching matters. Yes. Well, like you say we'll see if this. He already has a Patrick Mahomes has some of his uniforms and his young career in canton. And we'll see if he can keep going and end up with a jacket of his own up there. All right, man. Seth thank you again. Thank you. "All right. We're back for our third and final segment of the show this time. I'm gonna tell you why Patrick Mahomes is the NFL's best young quarterback. We're gonna put two minutes on the clock. We're going to open up the rap air horn app, and we're going to go right now. So all hyperbole aside, we haven't seen another quarterback enter the NFL with the physical traits of Patrick Mahomes in recent memory, we've seen guys who can throw the ball. We've seen guys who understood the game. We haven't seen this level of the two of them put together. His upside is in just the best under twenty five quarterback in the league. Stuff like that is just a pit stop on the way to Pat Mahomes establishing themselves as one of the best quarterbacks. Overall in the National Football League, I feel. That's a feat I believe he'll accomplish within the next twenty eight months. Andy Reid and the chiefs were aggressive in their draft. They pursued within the homes a couple years ago and inland again and doing so they created one of the most ideal situations for quarterback to grow and evolve within the National Football League. First of all, getting to sit back and learn from Alex Smith last year was invaluable. We live in this era were quarterbacks are expected to come in and play immediately seems like regardless of where your pick third round picks are starting games as rookies in the NFL. It's crazy being thrust into the lineup too quickly and having their growth stunted as a result Mahomes received low pressure. And he had this masterclass in quarterback play from Alex Smith last year, a guy who is largely considered to be one of the smartest quarterbacks in the NFL. He got a chance to play in a game that wasn't so important. Last year he got his feet wet, and now he's being handed the keys to an explosive chiefs offense that is take. Tailored directly for his strengths. Greg's going to talk about a lot of quarterbacks. Some of whom are admittedly very, very talented, but none of whom who possessed the combination of football intelligence and pure physical tools that Mahomes has his arm. Strength is once in a generation and it's make up for the quarterback position isn't far behind. So I'm going to, I'm going to give you the fact that. Mahomes certainly certainly got the benefit of being able to sit out for an entire year and really learn. But then I'm going to say, this is one game. This is one game with against one team like the chargers that doesn't exactly scream defense at you, and I understand he has a ton of weapons. Tyreek hill is basically a video game when you watch him play. But I need a bigger sample size to say that he's the best QB under twenty five. And there's two guys who I really kind of focused in on. One has mall ish sample size, but the other has a much bigger one. The first one that I'm going to talk about is the Shawn Watson, the Texans quarterback coming off an injury didn't look great yesterday. But when you talk about the highlight reel that he put together in the games that he played before going down with that unfortunate injury, he was a fantasy owner's dream. He was a dynamic mobile quarterback who could hit deep balls and do anything that you had to do to get his team into the end zone. Now, obviously, coming off the tough thing to recover from, and it obviously gives him a little bit of a hindrance. But the Shawn Watson is only twenty two years old. He's come back from knee injuries before in his collegiate career high school, all that stuff. He's the guy that knows how to rehab it and knows that he what he has to do to get himself back to that elite level that we saw in those games and knows record wasn't great, but that's not all on him. A lot of that is on the Texans. The guy knows how to put up points. The second that I'm going to talk about is a guy in Jared Goff at twenty three years old. The number one overall pick from just a few years ago ended up leading the Los Angeles Rams to a division title as year a first round playoff exit. But let's be real first time in the postseason. It's a much different much different game in the playoffs. The pressures all there, but it's a really good entry into a situation for him where he's loaded around him..
