Jarmo Kekalainen on the Dubois-Laine Deal

"Always good when a major newsmaker joins the podcast. He is yarmouk kick elaine general manager of the columbus. Blue jackets Jahmil thanks so much for doing this. And i'm always curious about how deals come together. And maybe more specifically when deals and you know we know that there are other teams out. There obviously interested in pierre. Luke dubois in your mind. When was this trade over. Like at what point did you say. Okay i'm done. He's going to winnipeg jets by you. Gotta do your due diligence around the league and see what the interest level is and what type of options we have available. And we did that. We recommend order and you might make have to make a couple rounds a call system. Make sure that everybody who's interested. Got their opportunity to give their best shot and we did that as well. So it took a little while but You know we came to the conclusion there. After the last game that dubois played that we wanna do this sooner rather than later so we were pretty busy on friday working on that than saturday morning. We we were ready. And and now. We have patrick line and ross lubbock here. One thing that became clear to us on the outside. Is that you and kevin chevrolet off had discussed this for awhile that you kind of both knew that if you wanted to do this there was going to be the opportunity to do it. I'm curious caramel. How'd you guys known that you were each other's potential trade partners. If you needed to be we we had a good dialogue for a while and this is probably the best match right from the start. But as i said we had to do our diligence. And make sure that we've done our homework on every opportunity that might be out there and after we'd done that we return to talks with winnipeg several times and and wanted to make sure that all parts of the trade work for us as far as cap goes cash involved there other parts of the deal that we had to iron out once. We actually does hurdles. We were ready to pull the trigger on both sides. You describe what. It was like thursday night for us. I know what a incredibly competitive person. You are a lot of things. What was it like watching that. And can you talk about your discussions after the game that night. Internally internal talks always internal talks for me and a very serious about that but you know there are certain values that We have within our organization within our team in our locker room and we have a very demanding head coach who never compromised. Those values would never want him to compromise those values and i support him honor percent when he he does his coach in enforcing those values and it came to a point. Where were that wasn't a level of commitment to those values that was given by fearless dubois and that's why he was bent and i support the coach hundred percent on on that decision. Like i said after that. I think there's a little more urgency on our part to get this done and we're happy to move on with the two players that we like even if the trade hadn't occurred on saturday morning to the organization had pure luke dubois played his last game with the blue jackets. And what. I'm sort of getting at was anyway that he would have played saturday afternoon. No no you wasn't gonna play saturday but after that. It's the coach's decision on on all. He wants to handle the player. And there's no need to get into that but There's always a second chances and opportunities to redeem yourself as a player if you make a mistake or don't live up to the values that we hold strong ear but you have to show through your hard work in practice and and how you conduct your business in the locker room and within the team and I'm sure then. Our coach will always give him every player a second chance or an opportunity to show that. He's ready to live

So yeah between Krug we think departing who knows what happens with Chara. I think the flu tone made a really great point that was sort of an obvious point that we've all been kind of sleeping on like it is possible that Chara reaches free agency and who knows if the Bruins have or anything with him maybe a team jumps in and they're like, hey, man, you're the missing piece like this is your what what we need and maybe yeah, maybe he just maybe he departs so possibilities are plentiful and I haven't even gotten to the Do they make like a real hockey trade? Do they trade Jake debrusk? They trade Brandon Carlo. My pie-in-the-sky thing that will never happen is like they find a way to make Carlos the centerpiece of a Patrick line a deal which financially and for other reasons just does not seem like something they would do but oh my God, I have been banging the table to get more scores on this team and if they found a way even if it's losing Carlo in an offseason where you also lose Krug, like imagine if I thought they had Patrick lyonnet David pastrnak and like imagine having three of the best goal scorers in the planet on your team

"In fact, if you really wantto throw throw some fuel on that fire was the discussion about bringing Patrick line in. From the Winnipeg Jets. What would it take to get a former number two overall pick and a bonafide score? One of the things you hear reported is that take one of the Jets would be asking for a Zack Gawronski aura. Seth Jones in return that is a steep Steep asking price. I'm not saying it's gonna happen, but that has reportedly been okay. The Jets are saying, Yeah. Okay, jackets you want You want our leading score you want Patrick Lina, Who's going to help your offense immediately. Great. We'll take Zack Gawronski. How do you feel about that jackets fans? No, wait. You can't do that. No, but this is part of the intrigue. The things that is going to start happening next week with the NHL draft and then free agency right on the heels of that, and then it's going to be the wild. Wild West is these teams all look to try and find a bonafide center to help their offensive production or A good winner like a Patrick lining. You hear about that? I've heard a lot of different proposals, including one where there would be four different hubs that the team would roll in and out of, which was kind of is not what it represented. Yes, you're right. I mean, it has not been decided upon and I don't think they're going to start here this December 1st date. I don't know They're going to start December. I did hear that as well. "Who seconds after? So a nice win for Montreal six two four and Washington. Again that struggle. They got off to a pretty decent star member. They beat up Boston on the first night. Made you think there wasn't going to be a Cup hangover, but the given up a lot of goals. Ovechkin been great, but very little happening right now for Washington as far as consistency is concerned. I wouldn't be too worried about it. It's a long season that just too much talent there. But it does look like it took a while for it to kick in. But the monk of month of October can be explained away by the fact that this team might have a bit of a Cup hangover go back to earlier in the afternoon with Winnipeg's four two win over the Panthers first game of that global series. And we talked about this with EJ Radic earlier in the week such difficult spot for Florida, right? The struggling this year so many expectations playing without Roberta Longo and then right in the middle of all of this. They gotta travel Finland and play a couple of games against one of the best teams in the NHL some speculation later this afternoon, and again, we're recording this now at about twelve. Thirty. So in about an hour and a half that games get underway. You may listen to it. And it's already over that looks like Roberta Longo make the start for Florida that Babu governor just wants to get a win Patrick line with the hat trick. That's a great story. The kid from Finland returns home and gets the hat trick. So real tough spot for the Panthers. Having to travel out to Europe take one on one of the best teams in the NHL other struggling to find themselves. No surprise, they lose four to two. But the game was tied at two going into the third period. And then Winnipeg took care of it with a couple of goals, including the line a hat trick. Toronto now Owen to since the loss of Austin, Matthew..

"And I've always to keep this in the back of my mind, like when I get a little too full of myself, and hipster all I always remember the try the tuna star Kist commercial. There's one of them where the big fish, and there's little fish, and the one fish is sitting there reading Shakespeare big fish comes by and says, what do you do is reading? Shakespeare, the why are you doing that? Oh, then people will think I'm smarter because I'm reading Shakespeare and the punchline is at the end of it, the one fish says look Charlie people don't want tuna with great taste. They want tuna the tastes great. That to me is the distinction on care, if you're smart enough, entertain them, tell them something. They didn't know give them some information. Make them laugh or make them think. If you can't make people laugh at least make them think and they will keep coming back. It's don't want tuna with great taste. They went to the taste greats. I was laugh at those Charlie the tuna stories though, because that's how Bill Parcells goes nicknamed tuna. Oh, is it when a player was trying to cheat some drill? And he goes, what do you think? I am Charlie. With you. I totally I totally believe. Okay. Back to the Winnipeg Jets and everything that we saw television yesterday. We saw a really good game. Saw some really good performances. I think if you're Winnipeg Jets fan you mentioned this post game you're more than a little bit disappointed. But nonetheless, we can park that this week and thirty one thoughts. Right a boat Patrick line. What's that deal? Going to look like for the Winnipeg Jets as much we make all oh, what's Matthews deal going to look like how Patrick line here. You know in Winnipeg and Toronto the differences. I think they got a lot of the same things they've got high expectations. They're really good team. They could win the Stanley Cup. I think the interesting thing is that. Winnipeg control that salary cabinet of bit more Toronto's got the most pressing story, and that's Neil Lander. But also because you know, there's so many of us here in the fight for competition is so much and we're in the media capital of Canada. Trump can't escape it. When a kinda can cause a smaller market. I think the biggest thing in and you saw it. If you watch the pre game interview the Kevin chivalry opted with David Bryan. And Doug is the he's the master deflector like throw him the question like he knocks the corn rejects into the thirty fifth roll like Akeem Elijah on. I think pretty clearly Jeff that they're in it to win it this year and everything they do is about winning the Stanley Cup this year, and they'll worry about all the other stuff later. I think the thing about lining is. If you look at his agents agents, Mike who played in the NHL mask, a great mask take a look at his most recent clients, they all signed late July. Well, dry subtle was August Tarasenko was in July first or second week of July first week the seventh and then wrist aligning was the day before the season began in two thousand sixteen so all of them played through their eels sees all of them expired, including into the next year's calendar. One was six days. One was forty seven days that was dry Seidel and one was ninety something days that was wrist aligning on the of the year. So he takes his guys after year three and he bets on them. And we're seeing that Colorado is going through the same thing with Rantanen another client of his and so as Winnipeg. So if these guys do what they're supposed to do these are going to be big numbers. And if they do what they're supposed to do and they are renting, especially from the wimp just point of view. Martin's game last night. And I'm like, many people. I just love Mark. Safely to me even going back to when I watched him. There was one year where he played with the very colts where he almost single handedly beat the London knights like in a in a playoff series. It was spectacular watching safely, but faithfully deal. And I say to myself if Winnipeg is successful is it going to be because Shaif lease deal is to Winnipeg. What Duncan Keith steel was to Chicago? It was that reasonable number for that level of superstar that opened up money for other complimentary pieces. Yes, it's going to work out that way, it's funny..

"You know, the guys that have come in that have been, do you know we welcome them, you know, with open arms. And I think we've had a lot of guys that fit really well with us like anything else. There's going to be, you know, instances where it just isn't a good fit, and I think that's that's true for any team, but more so than the not, you know, our team is is guys get along really, really well guys that are dedicated to to being good hockey players, a good hockey team. And I think we have a group that really pushes each other. So I think they're gonna do guys have really enjoyed kind of joining our group and the guys we've gotten have been newcomers who have made a big difference for us. You know, that's the thing like, I think that you guys have done the best is not only are you the jets a legitimate top team in the NHL. But when the team came back, there were questions. Would players want to stay and now you've signed long-term. Dustin, buffalo signed long-term. Connor. Hello book signed long-term March Shifu signed long-term. Brian Little signed. Long-term were expecting it. Some time that Patrick line is gonna sign long-term. You have, I think shown a lot of skeptics that good players would want to stay in Winnipeg that there is something there worth staying for. I think that that starts with social, the top, you know, I think I think our ownership is is followed as it gets. You know, March Inman is just such a such a great, a great person and he's around the guys, and I think the guy's really respect him and and the passion he brings for the city as well as our team and each individual guy. You know, he aggressive individual having a relationship with everyone goes a long way in our management's the same way and pull them reece's the same way. And then on top of, like I said, we will locker room full good guy. I don't think anyone signs on long-term here. You know, expecting it to be the warmest place the most luxurious place, but that without being said, you know, there's a ton of great people wanna pig. There's a lot of real positive to being a part of this community that way the cold weather in January. Elliot earlier on. Blake talked about the process. And you talked about it as well. I'm curious if there's one thing that's part of the process that you know you have to do, but you hate doing and you do it anyway. So one thing for you like that media. The hits a strong word, and I remember watching something about Niklas Lindstrom a long time ago. And you know, I think the biggest problem he got from from his coaching staff at the time was the little things the their team. I guess they called it. That's the thing that he was the best at. You know, he's doing the same things every single day and it's monotonous, and I'm telling you, like I said and threw game season is a marathon, and there's days where. It's no fun doing things in the gym or doing things to warm up or talking to the Bedia Elliott. But you know, seeing the scene, a guy like that who found a way to to love doing that stuff every single day and make himself greater doing every single day that that stuck with me. So of tried to trick myself on those days to to making it fun and enjoying it and putting smiling face, even though you know, inside your burning up, but I think carrying a positive attitude through things goes along. How many goals for line this year. It's hard to a number on it. You know there spurts that he has where he can't miss, you know? So obviously he's scored. Forty goals is here and everyone. You know, the natural thing is you wanna see him score fifty. He's more than capable of doing that. So I think that's that's a realistic number..

"Stick develops churning is connor on the right side bothered thereby yosi pass out the trueba his shot turned around and a big stop made by rene again this time on spastic book tipped over to connor almost taken away but conner regained and there's lots with this shot brenick and sliding over to meet him block that why from the left point what's it over to the right half wall morrissey for staffing aren't milan against daphne drew at the blue line down to the corner and scott hurting will fire that book that will stop them played down with a high stick so a break there for the predators stopping the clock two fifty seven remaining in the period of the face off will come outside the nashville line what emotion from the jets in and out and around and deactivating got a little lost in in their coverage the last guy you want open is patrick line and he gets a one time rebecca arena and king's cross to make that save before that stassen he found himself in front and battling with hartnell able to get a stick on hartnell and pit tech arena diving to make the saves fatialofa is chipped in viseu band ahead of ryan hartman and it goes out of play over the glass to the right side of the goaltender halibut palmer has been switching nikolai healers and kyle connor on rotate in both left just going bouncing around from wing to wing yes i think he he was saying that how connor may be a little more up and down north and south and nikolai healers can be a little more east west and lateral movement so you can complement whichever line he wants based off win back to yannick weber no ryan hartman pokes on.

"Yeah my favorite part about tyler stewart the vending machine guy is that he puts his a quick moment in his wife's car for every game just in case it's needed and i think he's probably just going to do that you know this scott foster situation is going to have all these guys like having a sugar plums and and pucks dancing in their heads like it maybe they weren't before yeah i mean it's it's he's now the career goals against average and save percentage leader of the nhl you know asterisk if you want or fourteen minutes like it should be the threatening and against you know the winnipeg jets who they played or at the top that they're near the top of the league right now and patrick line as one of the best goal scorers right now so i don't think it's a any it's it's an accomplishment for sure i wonder if the winnipeg jets altered their strategy enough to take advantage of the of the emergency go tender i mean is there anything they could have done to capitalize on the fact that an accountant was playing in in between the pipes on in i don't know at that point it was a kind of a blowout game and really in comparison to a lot of other sports i would say that hockey relies less on cassette plays as it does sort of kind of habits and things that you want to at least try to do so maybe they say like oh he's he has short legs and maybe he doesn't cover the bottom of the net as much as your regular six foot four nhl goal does so try to make him move laterally and they can try to elevate the puck over his pads or something but i still have to get the puck into this right their own goalie right you know and teams are so good at blocking shots nowadays you still have to get your shot off right it's probably more about what the defense does to to accommodate their.

"I don't really follow them that closely but i have to think with all the goals that he's been scoring since cain joined the team san jose has to be up there san jose's up there certainly kane has been tremendous contributor but the team that jumps to mind to me liam is columbus they went out and got low test do they went out and got vanik they went on got ian coal all those players have made an immediate impact on this big ten game winning streak than they had none of those deals even though van of big name were really needle movers when they were made but boy those guys have contributed and columbus is really caught fire to the point now where the way brodsky is playing columbus has to be in consideration as a very very dangerous team in the eastern conference now i understand the borowski has not necessarily been great in the postseason while it's friday and you know what that means it means top five for the week on the greg friday top five well number five is i've got a crying baby in the background let's go with the washington capitals very quietly marching up the standings very quietly on their way to winning another division title i think they will hold off pittsburgh and win it hold me back into the fold now ovechkin with forty four goals quietly might become the hart trophy winner when it's all said and done and they have really survived some of the problems they've had losing those two big defensemen during the course of the off season which was really disconcerting to the capitals for most of the season but now they have gotten red hot seven and three in their last ten two consecutive wins and with all the talk of pittsburgh with all the talk of columbus in prove new jersey it might end up being in a looks like it will be the washington capitals that will end up winning the metropolitan division number four number four i'm given to the winnipeg jets winners of three in a row seven two and one of the interesting how they respond without patrick line for the next couple of games he blocked shot but i'm sure they're breathing a sigh of relief that it's not.

"By the new voice of sunday night baseball matt bhaskar gershon sportscenter allnight baseball tonight with buster owning for baseball of course questioned same with jess in for alex for guy who is arguably one of the couple dozen or so greatest players of all time for him to actually be engaged in the game as he is still as a fan and and now as a member of the media's is is pretty unique because as you know buster many of the greatest players baseball really didn't have an interest in doing anything other than playing the game for understandable reasons but alex jump in here and it's pretty cool the baseball tonight podcast with buster only new episodes every weekday nhl to notes jets winger patrick line.
