"Teammates downfield for two scores. What I found entertaining as hell is he still said he had some beef with van Jefferson, but at least that late touchdown. Allowed them to bury the hatchet because van ghosted him on potential recruiting trip back in the day before Jefferson ended up in Florida when baker was trying to bring him to Oklahoma, but full credit to the rams for racing a 16 to three deficit, not just covering that number as nearly a touchdown underdog, but finding a way to win outright and most likely dashing any sliver of hope to raiders had of getting into the AFC playoff picture. Baker had a couple nice throws in the first half, but there wasn't any down to down consistency. Even in the third quarter when the rams were pushing for points, they came away with zip on that drive that could have set up a first and ten from inside the raider 15, but specifically to baker. He wasn't very good the first three quarters, 31% passing success rate. That was the second worst mark of the week, his completion percentage was 24% below expectation the first three quarters. But to your point, flip the switch in the fourth quarter. Positive .27 EPA per play, completion percentage 15% over expectation in that final stands. That's kind of his vibe. When there's like no pressure and he can go out and be the underdog when all the odds are stacked against him. He seems to play a little bit better. We heard baker talk about being in shock at some of the looks he was being given specifically that touchdown to van Jefferson. So maybe some coaching malpractice from the Raiders defense coordinator Patrick Graham there. But this just wasn't baker. The offensive line was really good, and that's a unit that regressed big time still not a 100% there. But you'll get baker, pressured on less than 22% of his drop backs. And then the holes that were created in the ground game for acres and kirin Williams. Rams ended with a 50% success rate on the ground. They could have had more points, had acres not fumbled in the first half. Had that ridiculous penalty not been called in the third quarter there on love tap 6 yards behind the actual play. No doubt, storybook ending for baker. That was fantastic. But the rams O line deserves some credit baker. And typical baker fashion, seen at the nightclub celebrating just hours after this performance. He got to try and reap the benefits for those 15 minutes of fame. We'll see how long he's able to keep a stranglehold on that job. I would say the remainder of the regular season is the rams will try and figure out if Matthew Stafford has his imminent return in 2023. One other good thing stood out from what you've seen so far this weekend a football. Well, let's go to the game that we broke down pretty extensively, lions, Jared Goff. That turnaround, mid season. Amazing. Just nothing short of fantastic. And you look at golf. The perception has changed a little bit on him. When you start to hear what's coming out of Detroit that he's their quarterback, they're not going to look for one early on in the draft and you start to think about the money making some sense will be outside the top ten in salary. It appears like Jared Goff is going to be the lion's quarterback for at least the near future. But we talked specifically about his splits indoors. At Ford field, they'd been really dramatic. And then you go out this week and it bears fruit. I mean, the lines passing offense best of the week positive 0.22 EPA per drop back. The lines were actually really aggressive at some key points there. I know we shot text back and forth when it felt like momentum was slipping a little bit, just Dan Campbell came out with the brass balls and had the fake punt and swung the vibe back. It was your season hanging in the balance, knowing the things it turned against you. And then defensively, the Lions at least shut down one aspect of the Vikings offense. Minnesota, 11% rushing success rate average negative 0.57 EPA per rush, both marks, the worst of week 14. So you had one element of the lion's defense shutting down the Vikings. I know Kirk Cousins look damn good. He actually played quite well. But the lion's offense carried the day. And ultimately, I thought at halftime, probably could have been a little bit larger of a lead than 7, but in the second half came out free focused and built that double digit lead. Minnesota didn't feel like they were close in that second half. You mentioned the defense for the Lions and specifically what they were able to do on the ground. Dalvin cook's one and a half yard per carry average was the

"They should just get me going from a I would be surprised if we're saying that as much as I'd like to. Josh McDaniels is a better coach. Patrick Graham is probably a better coach than Gus Bradley. I think they end up getting it right. And look, they're probably still gonna be that team that goes 98 minutes of the playoffs. It's weird though, right? I had this moment and everyone who is a regular reader of the MM QB knows my general take on John Gruden. And has known it since the day that he began coaching in the NFL again. But the more that I look back on the first like three games of last year versus the first two games of the Raiders this year, I'm like, okay, you know what? And I wrote this last year in fairness to John. But he did some cool stuff. He there was some neat things happening there. And it took him three years to figure that out. But now those are gone. And they could dial up some deep shots with some reliability. I think car felt a little bit emboldened by that point. And it almost feels like we're back to square one. I think he's attempted three passes of 20 yards or more. And it's completed one so far this season, and maybe if you're Josh, you're setting people up for it, but it's zero two. It's time to stop cultivating mass and to start turning this thing into a bodybuilder. I like that. I will say in their defense, I don't think they could. I think they assume they couldn't block the Chargers and they'd probably assumed correctly. I think that's a result there. And frankly, they had a big lead. I mean, it's tough to, you know, and look, I think the offense should have done more to close out that game. I think when you are facing Kyler Murray, it is up to the offense to do enough. And just put together a couple of drives where you get a couple of first downs and give your defense a little bit of a breather. But obviously two games is too early to make determinations about anything, but I am not I'm not losing sleep over it yet. But you are absolutely right. Jon Gruden, you know, I don't know how you rate them as far as sort of a leader of men of your entire organization type of rating. Obviously, he's off the field opinions. Are not something that you embrace, but schematically, yeah, I mean, and we wondered about that. Schematically, he was, he was pretty good. They were a modern offense that he ran in Vegas, and obviously he got the best out of Derek Carr to this point in Carr's career. So bring back Jon Gruden. Maybe that's what we'll be saying in November, December. Boy, who thought we'd, if the Conner of three years ago could hear me now. I don't think I'd be. I don't think I'd be very excited about that. I was more complimentary. The counter of three years ago would be like, Connor, say something. Say something. So yeah, for those reasons, and again, I don't think this is a 45 to nothing game, but I think if you have raiders Titans play, a hundred times, which would be awesome. I think the Raiders are going to win 80 of them.

"But where I'm going with this is on paper, the Raiders offense looks like the hottest girl on Planet Earth. We're going to find out if she has a heart because the Raiders offensive line freaks me out. And I think it's going to cause potential consistency issues and not allow car in those three elite weapons to reach its highest possible ceiling. Colton Miller made a massive leap last year played to an elite level graded out the third best tackle among those with a thousand snaps. The data that I have hinted at suggests, again, you can scheme around one good offensive lineman as a defense. The other four projected starters are John Simpson, Andre James Lester cotton and Alex we. And I can go right left to right here. If you're looking at John Simpson, you E graded out 72nd best guard out of 88 qualifiers last season. Andre James is an undrafted center from UCLA. And I will give him some credit. He's improved each of the last three seasons. But even with that improvement, he graded out the 21st best center last year. Lester cotton is an undrafted free agent from 2019. He's played 5 total snaps in the regular season through 437 preseason snaps, which is where Lester cotton does most of his work. He's graded out below average against guys likely finding other types of work. And then there's Alex leatherwood at right tackle, a position through four games as a rookie he proved he couldn't play, so he was moved to guard. Leatherwood played more than 900 snaps between garden tackle last season. Now I get it. He can certainly improve. We've seen maturation from young offensive linemen, sometimes they get a little bit overwhelmed. It would be difficult to be worse. But leatherwood allowed a 9% pressure rate. He was credited with 38 blown blocks forth most between all guards and tackles with at least 280 snaps leatherwood graded at a 169th of a 174 players. The crazy part about leatherwood two and we'll see exactly what the Raiders roster looks like when they meet league limits at 53. There was talk early on in camp that this guy was going to be one of the players that could potentially be cut because this current regime has no loyalty to a player that everyone thought was largely overdrafted going in the top 20 a season ago. So he's going to be an interesting name to keep tabs on if the Raiders happen to have a surprise there and leatherwood is out of the mix. I don't see it happening, but I know that was widely rumored locally early on in training camp. They haven't found anybody else. But it ultimately comes down to protecting Derek Carr. And that's going to be vital if Adams Waller and Renfro are going to play it peak. You look last year, car was pressured at the 11th highest rate among qualifying quarterbacks. The offensive line, again, is projecting to be worse. The schedule of passing defenses isn't projected to be daunting, but goes from 7th easiest to above average. And then last year, you look at car a great out 27th among 40 qualifying quarterbacks when pressured, his success rate dipped 21% completion rate 21%, EPA fell off a cliff. Again, when you project ahead, it wouldn't appear as though Derek Carr is going to have a complimentary ground game either. I mean, I like zamir white. But the run game isn't just going to dramatically improve here. The Raiders were 25th in schedule adjusted rush efficiency. The O line is worse and less leather would make that massive leap. I know Josh Jacobs has kind of been the scapegoat for a poor running offense. The raiders were 31st and run block win rate. So again, I like car, although high floor low ceiling, the three weapons are great. But what else is there here? The O line just makes me nervous. And I just think when you get and shoot outs and it's known you have to pass and you have that offensive line and you look at some of the defensive ends and just its own division I don't know. I don't necessarily see it. Yeah, I mean this is a team honestly and you think about this and of course you can't erase history, but how much different the narrative is coming into this year. Forget the Devante Adams trade, obviously. He plays a role, it has to be factored into the calculus here, but if it's a team that doesn't make the playoffs, happens to lose the Chargers and given how anemic they were offensively down the stretch, there are some major red flags and you did an eloquent job highlighting the primary concern, which is the building blocks of any offense along that offensive line. Now, unfortunately, for raiders fans, if the offense scuttle, I'm not sure that there is enough defensively to bail them out. Patrick Graham, the defensive coordinator tasked with trying to improve a defense. That is not finished in the top 15 and scoring defense since 2002, which was the last time they won their most recent playoff game. A season ago, they were 26 in points per game. They were 29th in takeaways. They were 32nd and red zone touchdown percentage allowed. You figure that number were regressed in a positive manner. But I mean, the numbers there for their red zone defense it was actually the worst efficiency mark of any team dating back to 2000, you look up and down this roster, yes, you bring in Chandler Jones to pair with max Crosby. You help out a little bit in the secondary with rocky sim, but you've also lost Yannick and gawk way Quentin Jefferson as well. Defensively, how do you even begin going about creating realistic expectations for what you're going to see from the silver and black? It's tough because I don't know what Patrick Graham is. He obviously comes from the Belichick floor as tree. So you like the pedigree for a defensive mind. Directionally his defensive principles are fine. He's going to mix some coverages, certainly more than Gus Bradley did. When Graham's operated at his own defenses, the pressure rates aren't very high and maybe that works with two elite defensive ends. To this point, though, Grimm has been a defensive coordinator in the last three seasons. One year in Miami two years for the Giants, 32nd, 19th and 18th and schedule adjusted defensive efficiency, not great. If I'm keeping things fair, there was a one year boost with the Giants last year going from 28th to 19th. And Graham certainly has far more premium talent than both those giant defenses.

"Is trending in the right direction. The last couple weeks, right? And Tom came out of the biweek? Looking like he spent his off time, memorizing all those difficult lines from that new hertz commercial he's in. Have you seen that? I have not the one where he's sitting in the chair where they're plugging him in. Is that the hertz commercial you're mentioning? The new one is he just says let's go 74 times in different settings. I don't think I've seen that one. I'm not gonna have to look for it. Yes. But obviously Brady was terrible last week, right? Completion percentage 7% below expectation wasn't pushing the ball downfield. Some of that can be explained when you're down AB and Scotty Miller and Chris Godwin's labor around with the foot injury, Gronk was also out. But off the bi against that caliber of defense that was dealing with injuries to sweat and young, not good. So you'd think a bounce back here, but what's interesting to me is Patrick Graham's giant's defense gave Brady and Tampa some trouble last season and it was also on a Monday night. It was back in week 8. Held the bucks to 5.2 yards per play. Only 9 points the first 39 minutes of that game and Graham's plan was basically to keep everything in front. And it worked pretty well until the final 15 or 20 minutes or so. Giants are coming off thereby. So they're going to have two weeks to repair, implement a couple new wrinkles and tweaks to that defense. If you look at how the Giants are trending defensively the last three games, it looks like they're getting some things figured out forth in EPA per play allowed third in EPA per passal out in mahomes and Derek Carr or in that sample. Now the Giants don't get pressure. 32nd dead last in the NFL in pass rush win rate 31st and actual pressure rate. That's mostly because the Giants ends and linebackers don't really do a good job getting after the quarterback. But when the Giants do get pressure, it's from two guys. It's Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence on the interior. We know that you want to get inside pressure to force Tom off his spot, re gather, set the feet again before throwing. Lawrence and Williams have 56 pressures between them Williams 7th among qualifying interior alignment and pressures. Lawrence is 14th. For the Giants to not get embarrassed here in a bounced off in a bounce back pissed off spot for Tampa. Interior pressure is key. Not letting the explosive beat you and based on Antonio Brown's cryptic Instagram post Wednesday night there's a chance he may be out there. And when the Buccaneers do get into the green and red zone, you can only get threes. You can't give up 7s, and that's where Tampa's been elite over 77% of their scoring plays have been touchdowns. The box offense has been a juggernaut at home over 40 points on average this season. But that's how you stay within this number is the defense does a lot of the things they did last year. A couple of tweaks to throw in there get some interior pressure with your two horses in the middle and then hope that rode Daniel Jones with a couple of his weapons returning to full health are able to score enough to keep this within the number. Now what's interesting is, you've had some change in the number. I think last year in New York, the line was 12 and a half. Now we're in Tampa and it's ten and a half 11. So it's interesting to see that that change in number and the Giants are playing a little bit better here over the last couple of weeks. I don't have anything on this game. My number is pretty close to this. The total we did see some value slightly, but really not enough to get involved. If it opened 51 and a half with 51 being show key, maybe we would have dabbled under, because we made it like 48.9 it might have been like a value, but at that point, but we didn't get that. We got 50 and 50 and a half. We're now down to 49 and a half. You have a Buccaneers offense that's just been lights out at home and pissed off and potentially getting some guys back offensively. If this does stay under, though, I think it translates more to the Giants in terms of that correlation. Should be an interesting football game. I mean, we've talked to great lengths about how good the Giants have been away from home, not the spot where you want to go into a hornets nest likely at least on the surface and try and tangle in beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, especially when you consider that the bucks were a ten point road favorite last week against the Washington football team now late ten and a half at home against the Giants should be an interesting game. "They can be anything much better than that. We're going to court. it's really interesting. What's your outlook on the giants. If not in this game a lot of people are taking embedding the giants to cover this three point line at home. But how do you feel if barclay plays. What do you make of the giants long-term this season in a game number one. What the look like yeah. I'm pretty high on the giant defense. I think patrick graham of there did a lot of interesting things last year. I i like their personnel They're secondary's deep they they have a lotta guys. They could drill in their but their offense is concerning it even with the guys they added at wide receiver. Kenny ghazi With dairies. Tony bringing a cow. Rudolph i think that often line is still one of the worst in the league entered. Thomas look didn't look great in the preseason and they're really banking on him coming and being one of their better all kinds of lyman having that second year jump and evac groups on steady and daniel jones behind them who we've seen struggle with pressure early in his career. I just don't think they're often can be all that explosive For them to really be all that interesting in the nfc bem up with this. The ravens have seen five players. Go down with. Injuries ended their season three of them being running backs leon. Bill murray looked like the backs on monday night. Along with lamar jackson. Obviously but what is going on in baltimore. And how significant is this marcus. Peters injury when you're gonna face a raiders team that wants to throw the football. Yeah you're mine on what's going on in baltimore. I think the the to aco back to back at just sort of one of his lewke Free things but the the peter's injury is substantial baltimore's better suited to to sort of rebound from it. Then then a lot of teams or just because they have some depth at cornerback. They have guys like jimmy. Smith who may or may not play in week one Nine he's coming back from an injury But anthony favorite as well so they have some guys who they can go out and doing for peter's but obviously they're not marcus. Peters they don't bring that same kind of playmaking ability. The good thing in this game against the raiders is the raiders. Receiving talent doesn't scare you all that much. Outside of darren waller at tight end. So i think they can get by week one. Even if smith isn't isn't ready to go But it is a concern for the season then. Good stuff and enjoy the game this weekend. Cam Newton Returns to New England Patriots From COVID Protocol
"Camp. Dude return to practice today. But it will Patriots did he return to a starting job? That's the question we gave nights went from pretty Coleman. I mean, but Simmons on ESPN Radio ESPN have serious examine Channel Etienne. And gave that is the ultimate question because you look at New York Giants reporters when the Patriots were going ones V ones. And Patrick Graham is a heck of a defensive coordinator for the new for the New York Giants. As a matter of fact, he should be getting looks in the next couple of years. As a head coach. He runs very complex defenses and By all accounts, Mac Jones. Let him up. I mean to lift them up two days ago. Today. Cam Newton returned to practice and they split time. We're the ones and getting their reps. But Mac Jones took a massive opportunity and ran with it. Your reaction Yeah, That's what you want to see. And that for you spent a first round pick on a quarterback when he gets that opportunity, and you didn't know when it was going to come. You don't know how it was going to come for him to take that opportunity and run with it. That's what you want to see. That being said. I still think Cam Newton is going to be starting September 12th. I just feel that he's going to start the season as the number one quarterback for Bill Belichick. I'm excited. Honestly, for Cam in Year two with the New England Patriots, I thought he was gonna be a little bit better a year ago. I still think that there is I mean, the M V P might not still be in there, but I think there's some really good football stealing Cam Newton. I think he's going to show that a little bit

"He basically hasn't had any kind of a work. This route Training camp and the preseason. So i think josh even with the calf injury he is still probably their best bet. And there's also. Sam bill maher is sambo that is that is a point to bring up in literally if if these injuries keep mounting in the secondary madre harper. He's somebody who was dinged up in the game. It doesn't seem as serious as somebody like. Quincy wilson who was put on the i r. at the two interceptions against the jets in the browns but as much as we got a crash on on deal podcast ago. I mean he might have to make this team if these injuries. Keep mounting the secondary. And we'll have to wait and see. What exactly is going on with dorie jackson before we come to that conclusion. Then we have kion cross onto. Who is more of a special teamer. I don't. I don't into his film extensively at the quarterback position. I watch a lot of this film as a special teamer. But he's another name just to kind of throw out there who's probably going to be a body that is healthy in the secondary that can play cornerback which almost kind of a That's an important. Trait is having a body and being healthy doesn't okay. It almost worked out perfectly though. The josh jackson trade in a way that the it for a week ago and i know he's not the most ideal player to put out there. They signed dory jackson for a reason because he's significantly more talented and was the one of the best available guys that they could get to play that second corner spot. But josh jackson has experienced he has. The talent hasn't necessarily lived up to that talent but he's probably their best bet right now i think i i don't know i can't really point to anybody else. The rest of those options that you guys brought up. They don't really sound that great. I wouldn't be too disappointed. If josh jackson is the guy that if hypothetically dorie jackson isn't available week one if they have to go out there with josh jackson again the experience for me as long as he has that. It's it's not a horrendous option. For me i think my go-to option would be julian love. I think there's another one if you get. Julian love on the field. 'cause you know. The giants like to to use a lot of big nickel dime lot of three safety sets. Borough peppers logan ryan xavier mckinney. Jillian love is kind of that lost piece that you can utilize sometimes in the in the safety room. But as a cornerback. He'd be out there much more often. Now that's what he played in college. It's not an ideal position in the nfl at least up to this point but he has shown the ability to do so. i think he's very versatile. I think he's an underrated player. I think he's a player that we don't really talk about enough as the giants fan base. Which just kind of guy. He's he's solid. He's okay but i do think he's a a good football player that if he's pigeonholed into the cornerback role. He can do that too. A solid level. Probably maybe even better than isaac guide at least down the stretch of the season. That's kind of what we saw now. It was against the browns. When james bradberry wasn't there was against the cowboys in week. Seventeen where he made a couple of really nice place and he is somebody who is really really good run support. And that's what this. Patrick graham vivement loves they love or cornerbacks with spill everything outside the cornerbacks who have to run support. Julian love is excellent in that in that regard yet and i would say the with. Julian love the number of different hats. That he can wear he can play in the slide. He can play out wide. He has had experience from college at notre dame. He has transitioned to the safety. He's played in the box. He's played that free safety position. That i think would work well with the types of coverage rotations. That patrick graham loves to do where maybe you have. It's a zone. Look on that side of the field where julian loved drops into deep zone. Darnay homes drops into more of a shallow zone from the slot position. And yet they're playing a nickel or dime look and they more or less just kind of patchwork a coverage shell together while they're waiting for door jackson to come back and like we said before we don't know as we're sitting here recording this the severity of the injury. We don't know if it's a low ankle sprain. We don't know if it's a high ankle sprain. Hopefully he does not need surgery. Hopefully there are no torn ligaments or anything like that in there. We're going to have to wait to find out about that one. I almost forget sometimes about julian love and his availability. So that's actually a really good point. I'm so used to thinking of him as a safety but that actually is really smart to point out that if they really needed to julian love available you could ask them to make that transition for a period of time until you get back dory jackson that is also not a horrible option and frankly i mean is against him. Last year was not very good. So it's not like you can go much further downhill from what we saw from yatta in a number of games last season for the giants coming up. Oh actually we got one more thing before the ad break that we need to quickly hit on here. Denver broncos announced the starting quarterback for one. You're going to be starting teddy bridgewater. The player that they traded for before the draft from the carolina panthers last season he was the panthers starting quarterback before they decided to move on and trade for sam darnold so this battle between him and drew lock. We have a decision. We now know that it is teddy. Bridgewater we'll probably spend a little bit more time in the week leading up to the giants first game against the broncos talking about the significance of this but just are quick thoughts on teddy bridgewater. Going out there is the starting quarterback. Would we think. I personally think i would have rather seen drew lock now. It's going to one of those floor. Ceiling type of debates. I think teddy bridgewater has a higher floor than drew lock but drew lock probably has a higher ceiling than teddy bridgewater. And when you think of a younger type of quarterback wasn't seen as many defenses was been prone to mistakes similar to daniel jones only feel like jones is a little bit of a better prospect. Unlock doesn't have the as lively of an arm as drew lock. But i would have liked to see him. Go against patrick grams. Unique defense i think graham scheme a lot of different trap. Pepe defenses kind of baited. Lock into a lot of different mistakes whereas teddy bridgewater he seen a little bit more. He's a little bit more He's a little bit better at just judging defenses and it better with his risk management is what i would say so. I don't know if there's going to be as many mistakes. teddy bridgewater. Probably keep pat shurmur offense on script whereas drew lock isn't a certainty to do that. So i would have rather seen lock even though he has that higher upside just because i think he would have been prone to more mistakes yet. I think it really comes down to what perspective you have from. Giants perspective drew. Lock can hurt you. He is a good athlete. He has that really big arm yet. He his peaks are higher than what you're going to get from teddy bridgewater however valleys are also a hell of a lot lower. Yeah he is not a or has not been terribly efficient quarterback he will make mistakes he will give your he will give your defense opportunities to create turnovers he will..

"A bit of a mixed bag in terms of who was on the field. We saw like a tiny. Bit of xavier mckinney. We saw a tiny bit of thorny homes and maybe that was just based on who was available and depth. They just needed to line. Those guys up for a little bit. That just wanted to get them to the younger guys on this defense. But if we're talking about some top performers some guys that really shine in some spots where they kind of needed to if they wanted to fight to make it and stay on this roster. I one oceans immunised made a lot of good plays. I don't necessarily you can say that. He earned himself roster spot in this game. But i think zimmerman is starting to prove that. Hey when this guy is healthy he can be disruptive and he can be a one of the better rotational pass rushers on this roster yet the keyword there is pass rusher and he definitely impressed yet. Five pressures in the game had that one sack on the first drive. Speaking of that i drive. Which is amazing by kevin's too fancy. That's how you really call plays off of each other and just absolutely manipulated. The second team giants defense. It seemed like but up on that same drive. Oceans administers was tasked to be the Contained defender on the outside. And he just kinda got washed. On line of scrimmage ended up on the grounds. That's still a concern for me or administers ability to hold up against the ron. Which is a vital part of what patrick graham wants to do so. I think he definitely did. Good things on tape terms of rushing the passer. We saw a couple of different times in this game but he still needs to be better against the run right now. I would almost look at oceans as maybe that nickel pass rusher guide giant. Bring on. when they're in a four to five type alignment just to me. He looked a bit more comfortable as a hand in dirt defensive end. He moved well enough as a standup pass. Rusher but I thought his just leverage quickness off the ball was a little bit better with his hand in the dirt or kind of fake dirt like substance. Whatever they use in cleveland and yet you talk about the contain and just the the way. The browns moved the ball especially on that first series are say the first two series and joan. I talked about it in our quick reaction podcast last night. The giants need to work on their tackling. This is been two games in a row where there have just been way. Too many tackles too. Many arm tackles too many attempts at a lunge where the defender just kinda whiffs and given up way too many yards after contact. I liked joe. Kelley coming out of tennessee. But damn these yeah. He was coming out of tennessee. The giants had seventeen tackles in this game. And that's not anything that we saw from the obviously first team but still the giants second team is going up against the brown team so you think that would somewhat balance out. But they're way too. Many missed tackles. Yeah devante down to sam beal. Who had are horrendous game. Had three missed tackles the also had given mola had to miss tackles accredited from pro football focus. I'd like to see those on tape. Trent harris had a couple so that is not something that i feel like it's consistent with patrick. Graham hasn't still been the first team. Giants defense still managed just 'undisciplined football and you saw on a couple of those long runs by the ernest. Johnson's why guys just falling over does not executing good technique. It was kind of a hard to watch. It really wasn't and i'm glad you brought up discipline because that was the word that kind of jumped out to me especially watching the giants defense. When the browns would execute some kind of misdirection Sending a receiver in motion or having play action yet. The giants defense would bite hard on that and that that would have them just completely out of position to make a play on the ball and what could have been a three or four yard. Gain turns into a ten or twelve yard gain. Those first two drive. It seemed like the only times the browns were getting ten yards. Pop was if they screw something up. It's what it seemed like. I mean ryan anderson like somebody who usually from my tape study from alabama and even a little bit in washington was disciplined run defender and he bit so many times he was added position. Loss contain. That was actually kinda surprised about how he wasn't a lot of those types of reps number forty six out there late. Thirty six total snaps. You know you have to get your are is with. Get our eyes on a lot of these edge defenders because once the giants actually have some quality edged defenders. I would say Might be one or two that get released. And you're gonna be like okay. That i probably get scooped up by another team. Women's said that in a while about the new york giants. I don't think ryan anderson did too. Well himself sam bill definitely to do to from somebody who deep giants secondary when you have guys at various williams. Who have i would say. Add up and down kind of game better than the jets game but Still up somebody who could crack the roster even in a deep group as a rookie. Just because he's been having such a camp sam bill ryan anderson. Both those guys are guys who did not impress me in alaw. Minimum offense is another one group in there so conversely in terms of talking guys didn't press you. I want to say i found it very interesting..

"He shows consistency and i would say some level of just minor improvement on a week to week basis. He's probably got a pretty good chance of making this roster because he's the guy who bust his ass he's probably not going to be good enough to start or even receive enough snaps to have much of an impact in this giants defense. But as long as you can show that if a situation where blake martinez goes down. And they need him to step in or somebody else goes down and they need him to step in and he can be really really good on special teams. He's gonna make this roster this performance a thing is a positive sign in the right direction for a guy like carter coughlan. Yeah yeah after the game. In his post-game thoughts. Ed suggested that carpet fat coughlin could be pushing. Take crowder for the starting job next to blake blake martinez and i honestly could see that. Especially if he keeps improving at the rate we have seen if he is able to build off of this first. Preseason game and continue to take steps going forward. I actually could see him winning a starting job now he might not be an every down player but if he keeps playing smart processing information while he moves well in space and he does have that pass rush of billy from his time as an edge. You know in college. That could be an intriguing piece. For patrick graham especially the way he likes to call defense since call these blitzes and scheming pressures you're ultimately what's going to make you more of an asset to a team and increase. Your chances of being able to make is being able to do multiple things. That background has an edge. Rusher is going to help him. They're not going to ask them to rush the passer in really any instance during the regular season but the fact that he can do it. If in a pinch you're down a guy on a short week and you don't have time to bring somebody up just having someone who can play. Multiple spots is really good. And he's played in this defense outside linebacker now. He's playing inside linebacker so he has familiarity at multiple positions. That is going to be really really key for a guy like carter coffin. I did he is going to be an increased chance. After what we saw from this one performance. We can really take away some positives for coughing and i would be super shocked. If he's not on this team. Come the start of the season. The one other thing to it just want hit on chris. We talked about in the post game stream areas williams continues to exceed my expectations. I think that that's super positive what we saw from him. He has the fumble recovery. He leads the team in tackles. He's not really plus athlete. He's not really a guy that is going to be super dynamic. He's probably not going to be a starter but he's really showing like hey. I was drafted for a reason. You gotta keep me around. I'm going to be a a key. Backup player in a really hard working special. Teamer that make sense to me now. Why they brought them on. I did get a little flack for for questioning that draft pick selection because it just didn't make any sense to me and as i always say i walk is to prove me wrong. I really like it when guys proved me wrong. Leonard williams has done it so far and here we are. Again with another williams dairies williams. Yeah this first game. I think it's a good starting point for him. He's got things he's got to tighten up I saw a few of his tackles. Were you know he was being targeted in coverage any touch to guy down but he was at least in good position. And that's a good starting point for him. That's how he wound up with that. He was in good position. That's how he wound up with that fumble recovery know. He didn't cause the fumble but he was right there when the ball came loose and he was able to return. I believe nineteen yards. So if he's able to maybe tighten up his coverage a little bit. Keep being in good position and keep busting his butt on special teams. I think that's a pretty solid path to the final roster for certainly going to help him maybe establish away onto this roster and to stick around. It's not a guarantee if you're a late round draft pick to make the team so having a hell of a first performance when the amount of snaps you're going to get through. The preseason are just gradually going to diminish. he's going to prove himself as a very talented guy or not talented but hard working guy rather that that deserves to remain with this giants team in twenty twenty one folks. That's gonna be it for us on today's episode. We're going to be coming your way with a preview of the giants next game against the cleveland. Browns second preseason game hopefully see a little bit more from the starters conceal a little bit more from this roster will probably have time.

"This all about. That was sunk on mac blade. Hey i'm back josue about bow jackass. The whole idea of it is that doesn't matter where you came from doesn't matter what you play your coming here clean slate if you get in the building again in the building when when they started that when they started it no but that is the mentality. You've always heard this. You said drafted second round second round new england. Bell check was asked in an interview and that was his answer. So if you have a problem. Let's go right to bill the phone unless you stop spending narrative that this is like earn your stripes. I think as i did. We see what we saw one other slot receiver i think was wearing like fifty eight fifty eight or something like that with some previous years though recent recent tricia all over. Yeah well matt. Patricia did have to okay. That friend of the show aperture it's right. Had to give the opening for him at all he was he didn't have the title d. c. My second year sevilla essien. So viteri like matt. Patricia started hallway at the bottom of their work. As i think he was at one point maybe this might be wrong but he was acquitted manager. That was almost earn assistant. That was assigned to like viteri almost and he was young. I think he stated vegetarians house for awhile and easy. It's real up the coaching. When he was young they moved the coach and things. Then it becomes a fucking head coach of interiors like goes like stay in my house wherever. What's up matt. Because he was a really cool. I think that's how high potential to know him. And he is an incredibly cool dude. What happened in detroit was not great. Obviously but i liked. He's coming back into hard to take that bill checks of the places. Joe judges doing right. Now let's talk about a in the giants organization kelvin. Benjamin and joe judge and dave gettleman got into it over an apparent weight disputes. He weighed in a to sixty one whenever he last year. Or something like that. They wanted him to get down to two fifty one. He showed up at two sixty eight. So this is classic. He said that he could play wide receiver at that weight. I don't know why it's a big deal for him. To play tight end. At that weight there was a lot of give and take adjust. Joe judge is a bill. Belichick disciple kelvin. Benjamin said after getting cut from the team after a verbal argument that was very public. I guess because media people are like calvin gioja start into it. I have a perspective on joe. Judge he's not a coach. I can ever won a super bowl because he sits there and cusses all day can tell us a one sided about everything. He's a know it all. That's not how it's supposed to work. As calvin benjamin and then every other giants player has come out and supported. Joe judge because they are currently on the giants and trying to buy there has been opened support for joe judd since he got there by the stars daniel and saquon saying hey we needed. This is where they were to what they want to get to. They need a little bit more of a hard edge mother. Fuck type coach. I think that is what joe judges taken in there. But to your point a lot of people in the check tree have not had a lot of success will be the next one musher he he could. He's been around some of these. I've been rehabilitated. He was in an alabama's world so he's around saving. Obviously you do things differently on a pro level. But if you got saquon in daniel jones by as big but i mean the biggest question. Mark dang jones. You know his his issues turning the ball over there. Make some moves in free agency obviously done some good things on defense. Patrick graham shot a patrick. Who's the dc there. He was there in new england with me as well So it could be good. But i i. It's gonna be good or not. That's that's the biggest them. Have you watched this film. A washes film athletic. He can literally make every thrown feel. But you can't take care of the ball like not not only turn the ball over with Interceptions but fumbling his fumble issues are probably one of the worst that i've seen so that those are his biggest issues. A great sneaky bet for the hammer down boys. Anybody that listens is daniel. Johns gonna run for the over. Whatever you said sneaky what allardice. I wou i wouldn't call them sneakier lucked. He's very athletic. He's very much like very similar to andrew luck. Andrew was so big games more. Yeah he's like a defensive end but the way he runs and views i think. He's very athletic. Dana john so a good bet for everybody. That's betting anytime you better giant's game. Daniel jones over rushing normally gonna hit probably in just one run to break one free there for the turning over of the ball. This happened was sam darnold as well is it because the team stinks you think that they feel like they have to do more or is that just naturally how they are as a quarterback in that team stinks potentially because that's what they're doing well like you're happy because you win or you win. 'cause you're happy type thing like do they turn over because they stink or is that teams stink because he turns out i mean i i think some darnold darnold issues was surrounding. But i mean yeah. It goes around is a usc in comparison to the guys who play when he was attorney machine there too. He just makes bad. You know bonehead type decisions. Daniel jones is so like careless like with the ball in his hands. Sometimes we've been pocket and someone would hit them. If you'll feel somebody in the hill still have the ball in one hand. Like he's about to like that you know you gotta have two hands on the ball protected. Sometimes you've got to be able to eat set in lineup and be able to play again and think about good thing about offenses you can. Punt shit goes wrong. you can put in. Every drive is with the kick an extra point or feel good Andrew he threw interception third along or whatever it was like a forty five yard interception or like that he threw a deep all. The guy got tackled immediately. I think it like the maybe the ten or something was out on the sideline. He ran over to me immediately afterwards. And said i am sorry for taking an inside. The that's why like it was like literally almost he was. He got very mad when he threw interceptions. Yeah that's why everybody that. That's why he made every tackle bed. Bad is our pearl. He would fuck it lead like every time. We do not wanna see as a teammate. Well as a team you want to see him to make a lot of different decisions as well but all of the all the things he does have good intentions. It was hard to get actually mad at him as hey need you to be more of a fucking asshole like. Hey if you don't like this guy on the team you get him out if you like this. He's on your team. Like that is something he was too nice of was too good of a like a player or team and now it's their job to coach. It's my job to play. Whatever it's like andrew no no hey i just saw peyton manning literally just pick his team based you wanna do most successful decade in the history of the nfl. If you like somebody you say now he was just such a nice guy. I think he was doing in an football like his style of play. He didn't wanna quit on a play. Because i think he thought he was disrespecting football like if he would just slide or fall or something he's like that's on football us played basically and then when he throw pick he was like well. I just let my team. I gotta go make the tackle and it's like okay. I understand why. You've i wish you a fucking prick a little bit more. You know what. I mean like or two nights. You're trying to get it football desert. You know what you're doing. You're going to carry the torch forever. You just just quit on a couple of plays football art. I respect everything you're saying. Here's so it's going to be hard to change. But when he would kill people. I mean that was just a game changer but danny johnston run a little bit. I just. I'm interested about the middle of the pack young quarterbacks so like sam darnold danny don's a perfect target names because their contracts. Are you know kind of questions on their nfl careers by the way are coming up. Are they going to be backed up. Guys anything be fizzle out or they're gonna fade out or they gonna go. There's a bunch of other situations around the nfl. The quarterback position and it's very fascinating as well Our computer just had a complete area in crashed over here while this play now of course not all right we gotta get to a break. You got music back there z. Opponent 'cause jimmer as calling in every.

"The field or will this be a straight up competition for one guy to start in the other to take a secondary backseat role at this position and working in with the secondary. So guys with darna homes and aaron robinson. How do you feel about this. Who do you think is going to be starting at this position in. Who do you think wins the battle. We i need to see an robinson. Get training camp but again. That could happen really any time. It's just a core muscle. He's i believe dealing with at all off season so hopefully that happens soon in say that it does. I honestly think it's not hot. Take to surmise that aaron robinson could by the end of the year earned more snaps. Darn homes but. I don't know if that's going to be based on slot coverage because i think darnay homes. You can move outside if you need to put them in the box a little bit more. He did that at. Ucf at star of player hybrid safety hybrid type of linebacker. He actually did that in college even though he's technically a cornerback doesn't necessarily have to build but real passing situations. Ab you can use him in that type of alignment which would lead to more snaps for him. Because i feel like darna. Homes is only going to play slot and that's kind of where he's designed play terms of skill sets. I mean they're both incredible. Athletes homes is a five star product out of california and robinson didn't have that kind of pedigree coming out of high school but he just bawled out last year for. Ucf cleaned up is tackling showed up better ability. I would say run support in even with shedding blocks diagnosing all the mental skills that you need to play defense which was really really imperative. Patrick rams defense as well. So i think it's going to be a good battle. Also bought are at the end of the day. I wouldn't be shocked if it is aaron robinson. Kind of getting a little bit more. I felt darning homes was fine last year but there were times where he was getting picked on a lot of the times. It was more schematic than just necessarily skill set but were extended plays specifically against seattle. Where i felt like our homes lost his coverage assignment and it was tyler lockett or something like that and he just gets tunnel vision. That's something that can be corrected with more reps but those mistakes persist. I could see coaching staff going and saying okay. Let's get robinson a little bit more of a shot in the slot. See how that looks. The nikki news homes when robinson and other roles i think just zoom out a little bit. How patrick graham deploys. All of these defensive backs is going to be really interesting because they just added a dory jackson. They've still got julian love. They've got logan ryan. They've got jarrow peppers. They've got mckinney back there. Then we've got donate homes in robinson and so many options and that i think just to talk about storylines we're gonna watch and to link to that aspect is going to be really interesting to me over the course of training camp and preseason preseason now with this battle in particular i think it might come down to again assuming robinson.

"Ross i don't think is played special teams at the nfl level. I know he played them in college. I don't believe he is played special teams at the nfl level. So i'm not so sure he makes the roster on defense. Let me think here for a second. I keep going oshii symbolism if he's going to have a role on this team he don't wanna give up on young talent and you also have to keep in mind that this is a kid who coming from old dominion had a little bit more of a learning curve. I think to the nfl that being said if there is a priority which there seems to be on the giants getting to the playoffs. Are they going to have the patience to continue to let him develop or does he may be get sent to the practice squad where i believe the wolves for the practice squad are going to be the same as they were last year. So that's what. I'm thinking in terms of moves that may be giant fans might not see coming But you know again. Let's see how they all do in camp. But i could see you know. Ross stop making the final fifty three. And i see maybe zimmerman as getting bumped from the fifty three down to the practice squad. Patty in terms of zimmerman. Is i have kind of made the same prediction. And let me ask you this. Having had a chance to talk to. Patrick graham a number of times last year and talk to the giants. Linebackers coach is beal. Mo before he left you take a college head. Coaching job and kevin sharer. Did you at times before before. O'shane got hurt. Did you at times get to feeling that that..

"Alright giants fans ed. Valentine back here on. Valentine's views podcast talking with patricia trainer. Giants country in the lock done giants podcast as we preview. You're twenty twenty one giants training camp which begins officially on tuesday. Patty we've been talking about offense. Let's talk a little bit about defense and really the one the one topic that i find really interesting. Entering training camp on defense is how the edge rusher situation is going to pan out. I think the giants have so. Many options are on the edge. Do you find that to be one of the most fascinating position groups entering camp. I do you know. There's an old saying you know quant. Quality is better than quantity. The giants have quantity but do they have quality. I think they do you know. I like z's larry i think he's gonna develop into a fine every down. You know edge. Rusher for them If lorenzo carter is fully healthy and it was a good sign that we saw him during the The spring he was on his way to becoming quite a force before that injury that he suffered. Now what about the rest of the gang there. What are they gonna get from. Ellison smith who was deaf. I believe they're fourth-rounder you know is ryan anderson. Done a play a role there What about o'shane zimmer. Says who seems to be the forgotten guy. What kind of role is he gonna play. And then you have some linebackers you know cam brown and carter coughlin. Did some some edge work last year. But you know. I think carter coughlin's going back towards the to being an inside linebacker more than at edge rusher is cam brown a situational guy so you have a bunch of guys there that you know the question is do. They have a guy who's going to be productive or tune. They really need a strong three man rotation i think at that position. I don't know that they have it yet. We have to see if they do but based on what they have on paper you can make the argument that they do but you know what they have on paper versus with they have on the field two very different things so definitely something to keep an eye on and you know the other thing on defense that i'm really interested in is how the how the secondary shakes out just in terms of how patrick graham uses all of the pieces that that they have have competition in the slot. You between darnay homes and rookie. Third round pick aaron robinson. Plus you have several other defensive backs capable of playing in the slot. You've got lots of competition for for backup spots in the defensive secondary. You've got xavier mckinney heading into his second year hopefully his first full season first healthy season. Is there any any position battle. Anything in this secondary that that really intrigues. You enter camp. Just how many different combinations can patrick graham. Come up with. i mean. This is kind of like a rubik's cube in a away except Instead of trying to solve get all the you know the colored squares to match on each side of the cube. There's so many different combinations that he can put together you know. Is he going to put a for. Example xavier mckinney in the slot on third downs whereas aaron robinson gonna fit in. Is he going to be the star linebacker. Is he gonna take over the slot. So there's a lot of questions but there's also a lot of different combinations that i think pacha gram. He's you know if i'm patrick graham. I'm probably sitting there. And i can't wait to run through some of these combinations and see what works what doesn't work and then figure out when i'm going to deploy them in certain game situations and there. There's a lot i mean. There's probably once that we probably haven't even thought of the patrick graham on his long list of you know personnel. Pack is probably has come up with a few new and creative ways to deploy those guys if we know grand patty. He'll he'll he'll come up with a few more of those tuesday morning. Sure he's probably know. Hey interesting things about the giants last season. Patty was that they struggled in some areas on special teams. Graham gano had a tremendous year as placekicker but the giants didn't get a whole lot from their return game canaries..

"Chris the first two names that the rams lost during the free agent period are not necessarily big star names however they are underrated key. Contributors who are now playing for different franchises. i'm referring to michael. Brokers who has been a robin to aaron donald and has been productive in that secondary role on the defensive line as well as samson obuke edge. Rusher who not necessarily a high productive sack guy. But somebody who gets to the quarterback who can pressure opposing quarterbacks and you lose him your only real notable player in that group that i can really point to is leonard. Floyd who's a good pass rusher very very good pass rusher but you lose anybody like samson that is going to be regression on your roster so those two guys underrated players losing. Both of them is going to hurt this rams roster yeah and i would say probably michael brokers in particular with aaron donald on the roster. You don't have to worry too too much about your pass. Rush a aaron. Donald is just built different from everyone else. He's he gets double teamed more than anyone else in the league mid even more than any two players in the league put together and he still has a ridiculously high win rate pressure rate. He racks of sack is just absolutely disruptive your brokers he is really good at holding the point of attack. He can't be disruptive. Behind the line of scrimmage. I think that is a big reason why they went in drafted bobby brown just to have that physical presence that that guy who can clog up the interior next aaron donald while he does his thing in the backfield the interesting loss. I think will be the defensive coordinator brandon staley just because they've got jalen ramsey. They've got aaron donald. So they're going to have guys on defense who offense is absolutely need to be aware of who really can scare offenses. But it's the other nine guys on the field. How how do they play What will the scheme look like Will they be able to get all the same matchups get put in the right positions. The way staley was able to do so your brandon. Staley is one of the most underrated defensive coordinators. And i don't know if his name was really being brought up enough until he took that chargers head coaching job. There's a ton of people out there including myself who think that the chargers this year are going to have a huge season. Now that staley is going to be taking over brandon. Staley is a very very good defensive coordinator and you can point to. Yes the success of that defense in reason why they were so successful being because they have to elite players at their position and jalen ramsey and aaron donald but i also point to the man who was maneuvering and pulling the strings behind the scenes. That made them so dominant now. I don't know if that's something that you can just easily transition out of any time that you lose a coordinator of eight top ranked unit. It is always going to be tough to replace that. I am not saying it is going to be a massive drop off but frankly there is going to be some bumps early in the season. It's going to take time to get things rolling with a new guy at the helm. Yeah absolutely like just imagine what the giants defense would look like. If a patrick graham took a head coaching job your we just don't know how ready the next guy up is to step in and continue what was built by that really good previous coordinator Granted the rams went from wade phillips to staley. And yeah. that's pretty good. So maybe sean mcveigh's is good at identifying ability and talent potential in his assistance as he is in designing offense. But we don't know for sure. And that i think is something it's going to have to people are going to have to be aware of when forecasting the rams. Yeah and we've seen success from this. Coaching tree under mcveigh. Now it's not always been consistent. And there's a reason why so many people hunt down these coordinators or even positional coaches like Like zack taylor. Who's the bengals head coach. You know there's a reason why people come after these guys and alex rollins from just a quick search is supposed to be the next guy stepping up. Hopefully he can take things over for the rams for the giants sakes sake when they play him in week. Six they're still struggling to figure some stuff out. But i'm sure that it'll be a somewhat seamless transition but there are definitely going to be some struggles in the first half of the year before they they really can figure themselves out and chris the last regression that is so notable that has to be talked about is the loss of running back cam anchor acres tore his achilles during the off season while training completely done for the year. We all know that that is an injury that is so hard to recover from one hundred percent and he was expected. Many believed would be dominant running back in the nfl for a team. That has run the ball so successfully in drafted him to be the successor in the replacement of todd gurley and he really started to come on towards the end of last year they lose acres. They also lost malcolm brown during the offseason who was essentially his secondary punch. Now they do. Have daryl henderson who has shown us some glimpses of what he is capable of. But i look at the rest of this group. After henderson xavier jones raymond colinas and then jake funk are the next names at that running back spot so there might be some troubles running the football with no camakers. Yes certainly an. You'd never want to hear about injuries at all. But especially when kaiser working out inbetween mini camp and training camp yet. They're working hard to come into camp in shape and up their game and it just sucks to seen injury like this especially something like a torn achilles which is a. It's a career changing injury especially for a position like running back where you.

"I think the linebacker position in the nfc east is in good hands. Right now with mike. Parsons engine in davis which sucks for the new york giants because the second level defenders who can drop into cupboard and can be effective as blitzer which i believe davis and mike parsons bolt will be. It's going to be annoying for the giants going to be annoying for our protection. Package that consists of an elder statesman. Being will hernandez was twenty. Five years old some manipulation. They're going up against incredible athletes. When it scheme to properly by guys like dan quinn and by guys like jack. Del rio solid defensive coordinators. And i mean. You can't get much worse than worse than what mike nolan was last year. So it's going to be annoying. Let's go onto the cornerbacks now though all right my number one cornerback in this division. Don't believe this is home. Arisen the secondary from the new york giants. Willy billy solid end. James bradbury has a shot. I would say to be considered as a top five cornerback in the national football league last year. now he didn't run too many men coverage assignments. I mean patrick. Ram was much more zone oriented. But you would see him on the backside of through by one sets lined up against true number one type receivers in meg coverage which is man everywhere he goes and he did solid doing and then when they were in zone the giants always roll their safeties tour towards the opposite side of where james bradbury was entrusting james bradberry with that covered so having that stable quarterback one is is very advantageous for defense playcallers. 'cause then you can roll your safety coverage and your other zone coverages towards a bigger liability which giants had last year. But this year. They don't and i'm going to go into who the third cornerback was right. Now since it's a new york giant. And that is a dory jackson okay and there are a couple different corners. You can go with here. So i've slept at four corners one's going to be a slot in the second boundary corner. We'll get into in a little bit but then we have a third guy. Who's a little bit more interchangeable. That's dorie jackson because dory jackson. Ken lineup in the slot. He did that for the tennessee. Titans plenty of times. And he's also a boundary cornerback. Who has the hips and athletic ability. To play. man cupboard has shown discipline. At the line of scrimmage and is solid at the catch point being physical and isn't a liability as a run defender despite the fact that he's a bit undersized now his issues have been due to injuries and things like that. It came back last year. Got torched by davante adams in the snow up in green bay. We can try the toss that season out. Okay we can but we need to see young player. Be healthy in a system that i feel. I can really unlock his skill. Set and with coaches like jerome henderson. Like patrick ram that can really maximize what he can do. And he's only twenty five years old right now. Like i considered william jackson the third who are longer cornerback. Maybe not a scheme versatile who was just signed by the wash him football team to make this list. He's a twenty eight year old player. But i think dorie jackson could be in for a really special season under the tutelage of this specific coaching staff. And you know what. The coaching staff and a team thinks as well because they invested a lot of money into him. So i brought dorie jackson and to be the second corner or the third cornerback of this group of the second. Cornerback is darius slay yet. He's thirty years old. But i don't believe he's falling off all that much right now. I really don't think it was a bad year for philadelphia. And now you're going to see him kinda restabilize or at least attempt to re stabilize himself on this philadelphia. Eagles team that you know what. There's not a lot of positive outlooks for philly right now but when you watch the film you could still see. That sleigh has has a good skill set to back to back up his play right now now. It's not as dominant as it was when he was on the detroit. Lions and he was manning up number one receivers. But i do believe it's still solid enough to be the number two cornerback that i would select from this division because it's kind of a drop off after daria slanting bradbury's a clear cut one like i thought blake martinez was clear-cut first linebacker mainly due to experience. Because you could make an argument. That mike parsons actually is or german. Davis possibly is because mike parsons is very very unique as an athlete and as a football player rookies. So you've got the experience. They prove in their productive now. Bradberry is that as well. He really took an the next step. And patrick graham system. Which is something. I really wanna hit home. Both blake martinez. James bradberry leonard williams are veteran players. Who played with multiple defensive coordinators yet. They have just unlocked their potential. They actualized what they can do on the football field. And let's not forget it. The reason why that's happening is because this coaching staff putting these players into the optimal positions. Because of patrick ram. It's because of joe judge. That is a great thing to recognize about this young coaching staff. And when joe judge got this team when he said we want teachers. We don't want coaches. We want to teach these guys and it seems like all. Three of those veteran players really took their game to the next level within patrick graham system. They're feeding off the. There's a confidence there and you can even group injured girl peppers internet groups four veteran players there. That's an awesome realization to come to. Let's hope it kind of carries into twenty twenty one. But that's what james bradberry did he really just came into his own and he was a solid above average player. A really solid number. Two i think is how i classified him coming out of carolina. You know that is a really solid number two cornerback. He might not be a number one. But under patrick graham and what he did last year he certainly was a number one. I mean he was always around. The football is quick. Closed was great. His vision and his route con is understanding of route concepts of winter. Break when to his spatial awareness. Just all those things kind of all came together and force a lot of turnovers whether it was him knocking the ball in the air for an interception for darn homes julian love or whatever or just him intercept the ball by himself he really came into his own twenty twenty and he could build on that darius slay i think he's in a war situation if i do say so i mean we'll we'll see what the defense does there for the philadelphia eagles. I'm not one hundred percent certain. How good that team is going to be under nick serianni by. I still think he is. That second corner went with the door jackson three. And then the slop. Romy would go down in washington kendall fuller. Somebody who was traded away from washington went to the chiefs came back to washington. He's twenty six years old. And i feel like. He's one of the more underrated players in the national football league as a cornerback because he man's that slot he's not that big but he really kind of shuts down the slot and does a good job tackling guys after the catch. I mean he's solid tackling cornerback. Despite the fact that he is sub two hundred pounds and he's also somebody who just is a bit more proven the darnay homes of the world bit more proven than the slot. Be jordan. Lewis is somebody. I thought of who can play outside. He can play in the slot. Somebody i realistically sought of. Anthony browne as well and then philadelphia. Their slot situation is kvant seymour. And sometimes they put them onto a maddox there. But he's more so when outside guys so what i was thinking about. Slot kendall fuller was the easy player to choose. Hopefully darnay homes or aaron robinson. Kinda take their game to the next level there..

"Hopefully for the new york football giants. But i wanted to do the defensive podcast on the all. Nfc east team. I assembled a week ago for big blue view. So when a dive into where i was thinking i kind of disagree with myself already even two weeks removed from writing this on some of these players because it is tightly contested the nfc east the division sucked last year. I don't believe it's going to suck again. And there's a lot of talented players somewhere injured last season specifically on the offense with guys like tyrants smith and lane johnson. We discussed that on the last podcast but there are also defensive players that it was hard to really kind of be strongly for them specifically at linebacker and edge. Because there's a lot of talented edge guys in this division and we're going to dive into that but i i wanna start with the interior defensive line. Look if we were breaking down last year. I think there's three giants that could be entertained for the three spots here but there are also a couple eagles a couple of washington football team players and the dallas cowboys not as much for the interior guys but they certainly have an edge. That was strongly considered for this list. So let's get into this. Oh my three defensive lineman leonard williams who would be my first selection. And then fletcher cox. Who's getting a little bit longer in the tooth. But he's still a very talented player. And then jonathan allen and i really debated giovane hargrave. I really debated doron. Pain and dexter lawrence and it's it's difficult to really like i said select one of these guys specifically with doron pain. I watched to all twenty two games of the washington football team last season. The two games that he played against new york giants. And i don't know what it was. But he was dominating the interior offense of wine or for new york football giants specifically negates. He was dominating we'll hernandez and he was just stacking and shedding these guys with such power in his hands. Such great lead bridge and just absolutely occupying the gap so. He's a player. That i feel like could just continue to a sandy thirty seven pressures last year in six acts. But he didn't make this list inevitably i think Lawrence is somebody who could definitely remember. I make these teams based on twenty twenty one. So i think excellent can take that step in easily. Be the player who earns a spot on this list. But i ended up going with fletcher cox. Still and fletcher cox. He's been one of the best interior defensive lineman in the league. He had forty three pressures last year. Which was a pretty solid. Drop off from sixty that he had in two thousand nine hundred but he played more snaps in two thousand. Nineteen you rush the passer more twenty nineteen and yet he actually had four more sacks in two thousand twenty than he did in twenty nine thima sacks they can be fluky fletcher cox similar to brandon. Graham who's also on this we're gonna go over incredibly smart players. Always in the right position could do so many different things with them. It's definitely not a player. That if i was an interior offensive lineman i would ever want to block one on one and there's a lot of guys like that within the nfc. East so fletcher cox ended up getting this overdrawn pain over dextra lawrence for the twenty twenty one season and like i said i believe if i went with those other two. I would not be knocking myself because it's a really really tight race for this. Theoretical fake team that i conjured up consisting of all nfc east players. But leonard williams. He was my defacto. One and leonard williams. I mean there's there's a lot you could say about him. Because member. Dave gettleman controversial trade. For leonard williams. When he was entering a contract year he ended up parting ways with a third round pick and a fourth or a fifth was contingent on the play that he was going to have for the franchise and if he was retained which he inevitably was so fourth round. Pick and twenty seven year old now and he had a half a sack in the half season. That he played with the giants. Which was the only half sack that he had that entire season. 'cause greg williams and the jets were kind of mismanaging him but watch leonard williams and patrick graham scheme you can align him anywhere you can put him on. The edge. Prevent one technique. You can put them at the three technique in the type front. They love to run to the weak side he does that solidly as well he. He's he's really good against run but he's goto is just the length that quickness and that ben for a guy who's over three hundred pounds guys just aren't built like leonard and he's twenty-seven-year-old so we ended up getting paid now in sixty two pressures last year eleven and a half sacks sixty two is the highest number that he's ever had. I believe that can only grow if he stays healthy with. Larry ellison smith. I video dental getting healthy. Lorenzo quarterback possibly a healthy oceans in minutes. So i really think. Leonard williams can just continue to just stack great seasons on top of each other while rushing the passer obviously getting those pressures finishing those sacks. That are schemed up. Sometimes monday trump eight and they send three. He's excellent stunt twist game because he can move so well laterally and band as well for a guy of his weight and size but he can also stop the run. So this is a complete defensive lineman and he is my first pick and then the other deep of lime and then made. This was jonathan allen and jonathan allen. Said it could have been drawn. Pain could have been dexter. Lawrence could have driven hargrave. But i want with jonathan allen. I mean he's coming off a fifty pressure season. He had thirty four stops which was actually three lesson. Doron pain and one more than dexter lawrence. But what. I like about. Jon allen is he's he's a bit more versatile than doron pan..

"That seemed to come up over and over with various players that we spoke to in with patrick graham when we spoke to him is the depth that the giants have in the secondary. There were a lot of questions about two different guys whether they're worried about how they were going to get on the field and questions to patrick graham about how he was going to utilize all of the the various pieces that he has and i was kinda shaking my head. Because i'm thinking you know having depth is a good thing like patrick graham said. I love having good players and to me. Having a lot of good players are having you know having players and trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together that that's a good thing and to me sometimes. I thought that the questions were like well. This is a problem. Because you've got more guys than you can use. And and i just see it that way. I see it as you will go through training camp in a couple of spots the you know the best guys will play and if somebody gets hurt. You have depth and patrick. Graham is a really really smart really creative defensive coordinator. I trust that. He'll find the the best way to use these these players that he's got. I don't see the the amount of players that they have in the secondary as a problem at all. I'm just curious if you see it that way as well no not at all. I mean goodness if you if you have injuries in your defensive secondary don't don't you wanna have extra guys back there i mean and then just look at what happened last year. You know the giants had numbers. You know. sometimes it's not about quality. Sorry about quantity it's about quality. I think this year the giants have both i think they have quantity and quality. And you know the other thing is the last thing you want to have happen if you were a offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator is you don't wanna put personnel package out there on the field and now everybody knows what you're going to run because hey they've done their homework and they know that player a can only do this player be can only do that and now it becomes pretty easy to figure out what what you're gonna do. They have not only do they have so many players in the defensive condemned but they're all versatile enough to do different things so you could conceivably see if they all stay healthy. Patrick graham will probably run new looks every week. Because he's their creative and and you know. Just i'm excited about it. I can just imagine what he must be feeling because it's a problem that every coach wishes he had to have all these guys and you know all these guys that can do different things. Now the question is are they going to be able to fit them. All on the roster. You came have Eleven or twelve defensive backs on your roster you have to laugh responsive to the other positions so who are they going to keep and then maybe are they gonna put on the practice squad because you know the practice squad rules. I think we're going to be the same as they were last year so it was a very interesting puzzle and i think it's going to be one of the most interesting battles of training camp and hey how nice to see that. The defensive backfield is nailed the strength of this team for years. It was the defensive line. Now the backfield has got it. It's interesting and and you know who's gonna win between logan ryan patrick. Graham logan ryan wants eleven visa on the field. Patrick graham wants eleven defensive tackles. i don't know i got. I got a kick out of that little back and forth the other day. Yeah well that just goes to show you about the camaraderie. They all have they all love Patrick graham and the you know he's a he's a very likable guy. I like patrick. Graham to i remember the first exchange. I had with him when he heard. My name was padding. He thought that they were they. Were calling him patty. Because i guess he. That was one of his nicknames at some point so i thought that was kind of cute but the patriots really. You know he's a good dude and you could see the players love him. They love playing for him. You know they just. They can't say enough good things about him. And what i like about graham and the coaching staff in general is that it's not a dictatorship they promote a sense of buy in for all the players even joe judged us is. It's like okay guys. We've got to go to west coast. You think we should leave at nine o'clock or should we leave at noon. Little details like that and he gets that feedback and he makes informed decisions based on that rather than what he thinks. The players wants patty last thing here as we roll through our our friday. Five reviewing giants mini camp. The off season program is basically over. Yes the giants. Have a couple of a couple of ota's on monday and tuesday that are closed to the media. But but basically the off season is over for the giants. It's over in terms of the media at least because we you know we won't see those practices The real question is as we as we look towards training camp as we look toward the twenty twenty one season. Is there a reason for optimism or or are you pessimistic and and for me. I'm optimistic and i'm optimistic about this giants team for you know partially because of one of the reasons you already mentioned i think the camaraderie that we see this is a team that that is pretty close together. This is a team that seems to fit well together personality wise. I do light this coaching staff. I liked the way that this coaching staff relates to players and works with players. And i think there's quality on this coaching staff. I liked the additions that the giants have made. That said when you look ahead. The washington football team got better. The dallas cowboys got better. So you can never tell what will happen but for me. I think a lot of what the off season has brought leaves me optimistic that the giants pointed in the right direction. And that's that's so easy to say at this time of the year and and so many things can go wrong once the season starts. But i think that it's been a good off season for the giants that should leave fans feeling pretty good about the upcoming season. Yeah i agree with you. I think unless injuries wife this team out knock on wood that that doesn't happen. They've got talent. I mean when. I go down the list of position units. There's really not a whole lot. That i sit there and say oh my god. What are they going to do you kind of get an idea to how this coaching staff works. You know from last year so you have an idea how they think and how they're going to work things and You know there's going to be plenty of competition everybody now in year. Two of the system except for the new guys. And and it's a lot easier to acclimate a handful new guys into a system as opposed to the whole team so the expectations rightfully so are sky high. When you consider all right six and ten is not an impressive record. I get that but the giants had at no point last year. Could you say all they gave up or oh they were overmatched. Them you know. They're not in the they're not in it. I mean they were in it right down to the end and i get it. The the nfc was bad last year. I get it but still somebody had a win. It and you know they didn't fall apart..

"To think you're right about that. Steve hey if you know. Obviously everybody's got their fingers crossed. You hope that things go. Well you hope that that daniel jones steps up it. You're absolutely right. I think that so much of how the giants season goes. It is in the hands of daniel jones but in in your mind thinking ahead. What happens if it doesn't go well. What happens if he doesn't make that step. What happens if the giants are six or seven win. Team are are the giants not only looking for another quarterback maybe another offensive coordinator. They also looking for a new gm at that point to absolutely. Yeah i believe they are. I believe this is a critical year for dave gettleman as well because he could is legacy on the line with daniel generals now. I didn't agree with the pig. At number six i was. I was couvert along when he was a rookie But versus the guy and this is the guy that everybody in the organization believes on but if daniel jones isn't the guy than i think you're gonna see their annual luck. David gilman ahead out to cape cod. He'll they'll steph down pedestrian negative I i don't think that's going to happen. I think daniel jones is going to restore fate in the quarterback position with the new york giants. I i love. I think daniel jones what it takes and i just i if if he feels shame on him because he's got all the weapons you need and and say return is just huge. But they've got to be right about the office of wide left the cake. That'd be right about the office of why and they believe they would. You know we'll see about that Remember also the defense with patrick graham. Keep the game close for daniel jones dewitt so daniel jones has to be at his best in the fourth. The way you. I manning always was over two years and i'm looking for a breakout year. I was looking for last year from lorenzo carter. What are you thinking.
